External Hard drive goes to sleep and doesn't wake up

Question: External Hard drive goes to sleep and doesn't wake up

I have a External Seagate 2 Tb hard drive that after a while, will disconnect and I can't wake it by trying to access the drive in Explorer. I tried rebooting my computer but it doesn't show up anymore. The only solution it seems is to disconnect the drive and plug it back in.

Any advices?

I am on Windows 10

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If I'm running utorrent when I put my W7 pc to sleep, after it wakes my external hardrive will become completely unresponsive. Usb hardrive at this point will not eject properly so I have to either unplug it unsafely or reboot PC to regain control of drive. If I remember to shut off Utorrent before I put PC to sleep, PC will wake fine with ex. hardrive working fine. Anyone know a fix for this so I can avoid having to turn Utorrent off first before I put my PC to sleep?

If you put your machine to sleep, then all programs are suspended, so there is absolutely no point in leaving them "running". Most especially not if this causes errors on waking.

Ever since I've installed a second hard drive in my T410, a Hitachi 250GB drive, my machine fails to wake from sleep (sometimes)... Then I have to do a hard reset. I had the same problem without the 2nd drive when I tried to use the HD Password in the BIOS and found out that it was something to do with the Crucial M4 drive I'm using. But this same problem is now happening ever since using the 2nd drive slot. Any ideas? I really like the extra storage space and don't want to remove it based on this problem.

Answer:T410 fails to wake from sleep with 2nd Hard drive installed?

Quick update. It wakes up eventually if you leave the machine for about 40 seconds.

When I restart my computer after it has been hibernating (usually overnight as it's left on 24/7), it goes to the welcome screen and just hangs. The HD light is inactive making me believe that the HD is not waking up and causing this problem.

Any ideas anyone ?

I set the hard drive to stop spinning after 4 hours of idle activity but it doesn't ever go to sleep. If I set the time interval to < 1 hour like 45 min then it will go to sleep.

I'm not talking about the computer going to sleep/hibernating, I mean the spinning of the hard drive.

I'm using a Seagate model ST3300601U2RK external hard drive with Windows XP.  All in all the thing works pretty well except that after about thirty seconds after turning on, it goes to sleep on me.  The light stays on, but the hardware's internal activity stops.  Even if I'm looking at a folder or working on a file located on the drive, it will go to sleep after a while.I can get it turn turn back on again by opening a folder or file I hadn't yet accessed, but I have to wait about 10 seconds for it to start running again.  Since I'm moving back and forth a lot between programs and source files, it really starts to make things drag on.  Is there any way of turning this sleep feature off?Just for your information, I've looked at Seagate's website and looked through all their supplemental info on the hard drive in question and nothing goes into specifics beyond increasing "efficiency".  Most of what they have are basically just pamphlets.  I've also thoroughly searched this site for the last couple of days trying to find anything regarding the subject, but I've come up with nothing.  I've also tried exploring the disk manager in the Computer Management utility, but I can't find any options or tools to change on the device except changing its associated drive letter or formatting it altogether.Any ideas?

Did you install SP1? Have you checked for driver updates for chipset and video? What else is supposed to wake the computer? Mouse? Keyboard? Check Power Management settings for those devices in Device Manager.

Hello,         I have been using this new machine for last 2 months and am experiencing this issue from time to time. When I don't work on the laptop, I just close the lid. After some time, I see that the red led light on the lid goes blinking on slow pace - that tells me the machine has gone into sleep mode. Now, when I come back to the machine later, usually I see either the red led is still blinking or completely gone off. I open the lid, the machine wakes up and I can start working on.       However, at times, when I come back, I see that the red led on the lid is constantly on. In those occasions, when I open the lid, the machine doesn't "wake up". I see that the greed led on the power button is constantly on - so that kind of indicates that the machine IS probably awake. But, the screen is black/empty as if its still sleeping. In these situations, I normally end up with force restarting the machine - making me to reopen all the  applications once again, if not loosing some work/data.        Is there anywya I can tweak any setting or follow any best practice - that can prevent this issue from re-ocurring?         Thank you very much in advance for your suggestions.

I got a new T440s about 2 weeks ago and sometimes it doesn't wake up after it goes into sleep mode. It gets stuck on a black screen and the mouse cursor is visible, but moving the mouse or pressing keys on the keyboard fails to wake it up. When this happens, I have to restart the computer by holding down the power button for 10 seconds. I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and hybrid sleep is off. I'm just really confused because sometimes it wakes up perfectly and sometimes it doesn't. Thanks!

Answer:T440s doesn't wake up from sleep

hi treeck - are you using an external display through the mini display port? I have this issue as well on my T440p. Even wtih max power performance power settings and hybernate disabled, almost every time the displays turn off, they do not turn back on.. it's almost as if the system still goes into hibernate anyway, and it does not wake up. When I hit a key or move the mouse it seems like it tries to turn on, and the backlight (only) on my laptop comes on (black screen) with my external monitor staying completely off.  the system does not respond, and I have to do a hard power down, then back on to get the system back. I've about had it with this. I've tried all the latest drivers, switching USB ports, nothing has worked. Interested to hear about your details.

I have a T400 with Windows Vista 32bit SP1 (now SP2) and sometimes my ThinkPad won't wake up from sleep. I have hybrid sleep disabled and I have Hibernation disabled aswell as the Hibernation Idle timer set to 60000 minutes.  If I put the laptop into sleep mode right now with Fn+F4, it goes into sleep fine and if I hit Fn+F4 a few seconds later it will wake up just fine. But, if I put it into sleep, then put the laptop in the laptop bag, open it up at work and hit Fn+F4 nothing happens. The cresent moon light is still on along with the battery light but it does not come out of sleep.  Any ideas? Is this a hardware issue or could putting in a bag have something to do with it not coming back from sleep (maybe the heat it gives off while sleeping is too much to be in a closed environment?). thanks

I've been having this problem for awhille -- approximately 30-50% of the time, when I put my computer in sleep mode and try waking it up, it simply doesn't wake up. I hear it turn on (fan starts running, etc.) but the screen is black (forced to hold down power button to reboot)...or it goes to the startup screen (but won't finish starting up -- have to hold down power button to reboot).

I have an HP Compaq 8710w laptop with Windows 7 Professional (32-bit).

Here is what I have done already to try to fix it:

-Updated drivers
-Tried turning off wireless before putting to sleep
-Changed power plan from "High Performance" to "Balanced".

No dice. Any other ideas?

Please help!! Thank you

Answer:Monitor goes to sleep and doesn't wake up

Usually if the monitor goes to sleep in means that there is not a video signal.  However, if holding the power button down on the monitor? will wake it then the issue is the monitor.  If you are holding down the power button on the PC then you have another issue.  Which power button are you holding down? What model PC and operating system are you using?

Hi, I've recently been running into a problem -- I put my computer into sleep mode, and then when I press the power button to wake the computer, either the screen stays black and I have to do a forced reboot (holding down the power button), or it simply does a forced reboot automatically. This doesn't happen all the time, but I'd say probably 60% of the time that I want to wake my computer from sleep...and I haven't noticed a certain pattern of when it does and doesn't work. It has only been happening the last month or so, and has happened more often recently. I got a new battery for my laptop about a month ago, so that may have corresponded to when this problem started, I can't 100% remember.

I have an HP Compaq 8710w laptop with Windows 7 Professional (32-bit). I have updated all the drivers already (literally went through every device in Device Manager and tried finding updates for each), and the issue is still happening. What's the next step I should take? Thanks in advance!

Hi All, I have a 1 month old T440 that is exhibiting some strange sleep behaviour. The issue is when the unit is on battery and goes into a deep sleep mode after about 2-3 hours; it is not able to be woken up. Opening the lid, pressing the power button, holding the power button, etc. does nothing.I am only able to ge the unit to resume from Deep Sleep by plugging in the AC Adaptor. The moment it is attached and press the power button, it fires right up and resumes from deep sleep. No, the battery isn't dead as when it restarts, I see anywhere from 90% to 50% on the main and internal batteries remaining. Anyone experienced this issue? Thanks.

Answer:T440 Doesn't Wake from Deep Sleep

I haven't heard of this issue before.  Is this something that has started happening recently, or has this happened since day 1?

Hi all,

When I click the sleep button my computer seems to go into sleep mode successfully however when I hit a keyboard key or wiggle the mouse to wake it the tower fans & motherboard lights switch on but there is no picture or sound from my monitor. I have to hit the reset button which does a dirty reboot before I can get back to the desktop.

I'm fed up of having to do a full shutdown/restart of my computer everytime I go away to do something!

My Yoga 500 ISK would sometimes not wake up from sleep.I mean, I can see the computer is working, I can hear it, but the screen is black and unresponsive. What happens is that I either leave it on and it goes to sleep on its own within 15 mins, or put it to sleep via start>power>sleep - it doesn't matter. Sometimes I press the power button and it wakes up fine, but sometime I get the black screen. My computer is up to date on the latest BIOS update (from today), Both Intel and nVidia graphics drivers are up to date, and in my power settings, my hard drive is set to not turn off ever. Does anyone know a solution to this problem??

Answer:Yoga 500 ISK Doesn't wake up from sleep properly -...

Hi there, I own the same model and I believe I have the same issue. Also I find booting up to be painfully slow. It gives me so much Apple Mac envy. I am almost certain the issue is with regard to the HDD itself, the WDC WD10S21X-24R1BT0-SSHD-8GB. It is used in many of the new-ish lenovo laptops including the Y50 touchscreen gaming computer. Many customers have complained about the SSHD, google that long model and you'll see loads of complaints on forums. I intend to open up my Yoga 500 ISK and replace the SSHD with what should be in there - an SSD. I shall let you know how I get on! Harry

Hi, I recently purchased a Thinkpad X1 Yoga, shipped on May 16, 2016.  I have an issue:     When I use the left side USB port (the one on the side of the power charging port) to charge my old Ipod and the laptop goes to sleep. The laptop does not wake up when opening the lid or pressing on the power button. However, as soon as I disconnect my Ipod from the USB port. The laptop immediately wakes up but unable to login using the fingerprint reader. Specific steps to reproduce: 1) Plug x1 yoga power cord to the laptop 2) Plug Ipod to the left side USB port. Make sure Ipod has no earphones plugged in. 3) Put the laptop in sleep mode 4) Close the lid of the laptop 5) Wait until iPod is no longer being charged by the laptop (a few seconds after the laptop goes to sleep) 6) Wait until iPod automically turns off on its own (it takes 15 to 30 mins, not sure exactly how much time.) 7) Open the laptop lid and notice that the laptop is not waking up. 8) Press on the "power" button on the right side of the X1 Yoga. Notice that the laptop does not wake up. 9) Remove the iPod from the USB port on the left side of the X1 Yoga.        Notice that the laptop is now able to wake up.        Also notice that the finger print reader is not responding. Cannot login using the fingerprint reader. Seems like a driver issue. Lenovo please confirm! ThanksWilly

Came across my first major problem. When I try to go into sleep mode (either through the Start menu or pressing the power button), the hard drive light blinks for a second then the screen goes black. BUT... my power light stays on (should be blinking) and pressing it again, the mouse button... nor any key press on the keyboard will wake it up. I had to hard shutdown (holding the power key down for like 5 seconds) for the light go off and had to keep rebooting from scratch.

That's a major pain since waking up out of sleep mode is normally much faster and convenient. To make things worse.... it seems like 10 takes longer to boot up from scratch than 8.1 did. I've yet to see if SHUTDOWN works properly or not. Not a happy camper on the sleep mode issue. It worked under 8.1 just fine. Anybody else?!?

EDIT: Shutdown goes through a longer process, but ends the same as sleep does...... The power light stays on.

I'm using an HP Envy w/ i7-4510u CPU / 8GB RAM / 4GB Nvidia GTX 850M / 1TB drive

EDIT#2: Now SLEEP and SHUTDOWN appear to be working properly and Windows 10's boot up times are as fast or faster than 8.1 now. It's like a car and trying to clear out the lines of bad fuel before it runs right. Just some weird hiccups.

EDIT#3.... Now it's doing it again!

Answer:Sleep Mode doesn't work right nor does it wake up.

Identical issues here. Also an HP Envy. Also sleep/hibernate works sometimes and not others.

This will be a deal breaker for me if I can't turn off my computer and turn it back on with my status still intact. I'll (gulp) be forced to return to 8.1

Will post here if I figure out a solution

Hello, I'm the owner of an EliteBook 8560p running under Windows 7 Professional 64 bits Edition. I started the installation from scratch with a driver-empty Windows. I've downloaded the drivers separately on the HP Support Website. Everything is running fine but when I put my computer to sleep (normal stand-by mode) I am unable to wake it up from the keyboard keys or trackpad buttons. The only way I can wake it up is by pressing the Power Button. Then it wakes up normally and I go back to the Windows 7 login screen. Is it possible to wake up this computer by pressing a key instead of the power button ? I don't want to press it too often. For example on my old Acer Aspire 5315, pressing a key wakes up the computer instantly. Also, I have no "Allow this device to wake up computer" option in my Device Manager.I can't find this option in the BIOS neither. Can you wake your HP Notebook computer by pressing the keyboard ? Is there a way to do that on EliteBooks ? Thanks and sorry for my mistakes, English is not my mother language.

Answer:Keyboard doesn't wake up computer from sleep

If you have an external display, it will stop the computer from waking. Disconnect display port cable and try again. Also, check your drivers so that Power Mgmt. allows mouse or keyboard to wake system. I have found these issues effect my HP 8460P as well as HP 2540P. Also, make sure that the BIOS allows USB to wake system.

Welcome to the forum! You might want to take a look into the Thinkpads.com forum here,  there some people encountered similar problems. Maybe trying to disable the named "optical drive power off" feature, as someone stated there might fix your problem.  Otherwise take a look at Lenovos website for possible power manager updates.

I have a Windows 10 laptop with a couple external hard drives connected to it. I disconnect the hard drive and put it to sleep and take it to work. After coming home I reconnect them. I can hear the sound effects of connecting and disconnecting, but they never show up in my computer, not even in disk management.

I can see them in device manager. Universal Serial Bus controllers -> USB mass storage device, with a yellow exclamation mark. I checked and the error message is :

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)

This can be fixed by restarting the computer and I googled for a solution to no avail. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.

So if anyone knows how to fix this, please tell me so I don't have to restart computer all the time, thank you.

Right, I have a Seagate 250GB external hard drive that runs through a USB port on my Windows XP laptop.

The Hard drive Runs a auto 'Sleep' Mode after about 10 - 15 mins of not being accessed manually through the OS Folders. It then has to 'Wake-up' again which is affecting the way programs, music etc are run off of it.

Ive contacted Seagate and they say there isn't a way to disable this function, but there has to be something that can keep it 'awake' all the time.

So i thought I'd ask you guys, Hope you can help me.

Thanks

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and have kept up with all Updates and latest drivers. I am having a problem with a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus External Hard Drive connected to the USB port of my Asus Sabertooth motherboard. After waking up the system after sleep, the external drive vanishes from the PC. Web searching has shown me a fix in 2009 that was supposed to be incorporated into Windows 7. It either was never done, or it was not pertinent to my situation, since it made no reference to USB connection. The problem described then was that due to the large size of this drive, it did not respond soon enough to the awakening process, and thus was never seen.

Is there a more current fix for this, especially with USB connection?

Answer:Problem recognizing external hard drive after sleep awakening

Hello and welcome sherwin Mate does the problem still exist if the drive is plugged into a different usb slot.

Also does this still happen with other devices other than a drive? To check just reduce the sleep time down to speed up the process of checking.

Plus mate good on you for using some specs but they need to be a little more specific ie chipset on th e motherboard or the mobo version / model.

Use Speccy to find this out Speccy - System Information - Free Download

its free and a very useful tool to keep.

Answer:External hard drive not showing up after sleep and disconnect (Code 38

You could try enabling automount and rebooting, which will bring this volume online and keep it online through subsequent reboots. Enabling automount can be done by opening a Command Prompt window and invoking DISKPART -> automount enable -> exit

I have a HP Notebook Laptop connected to an external display with a unifying wireless device - the Logitech K400 Plus Keyboard. I put the laptop to sleep to save battery power. Now here's the problem; I'll have to physically open the screen door just to get it to wake and its something I do not want to do every time. HP parts are expensive. -_- Its a new laptop but still...they do NOT last. I have the same issue when the batteries goes dead and it goes into hibernation mode. I'd have to open the screen door to press the power switch. Thanks.

I have a U450p that I use with an external monitor and keyboard and mouse. Since the laptop's lid is usually closed, I'd like to be able to wake it from sleep using the external keyboard and/or mouse. However, it seems the only wake to wake it from sleep is to open the lid and hit one of the keys on the laptop's keyboard. I have enabled "allow wake from sleep" on the devices in device manager, as well as disabling power down of the USB root hubs in device manager, but nothing seems to work. Unfortunately, there are no settings in BIOS that are relevant. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I am using a brand new Lenovo P51 with 64-bit Windows 10 with a NVIDIA Quadro M1200 video card along with an external monitor (ASUS VS228H-P) connected through HDMI. When my computer goes to sleep, my second monitor turns off. When I wake up the laptop, but 2nd monitor is no longer recognized by the machine and I am unable to use the display. I have tried a number of solutions already:1) I have tried selecting "extend display" under F72) I have tried using the detect display button in System/Display Settings3) I have updated my drivers for both display adapaters (intel graphics 630, and NVIDIA Quadro M1200)4) I have turned the monitor on and off,5) I have cycled through the input options on the monitor while it is on6) I have plugged and unplugged the HDMI cable The only solution to reconnect the monitor I have found is to reboot the computer which is impractical for me while I am using the machine (I am running programs over multiple days and rebooting is not impossible). It is also impractical to turn off sleep mode on the machine - the whole point of having sleep mode is to save my screen and reduce power usage. I also use sleep mode for security - I want my laptop to lock so that someone can't just pick it up any time and use it. I also read somewhere that someone was able to turn off and then turn on the display adapters to reconnect - but this is a ridiculous fix I won't repeat over and over again. Outside of these solutions, has anyone found a way to make Win... Hello,

I have an old Maxtor OneTouch external hard drive. 120gb. It's a FAT32 file system and was installed on my old Windows98SE PC.

The problem is that the external hard drive isn't read by any other computers. I've tried it on multiple laptops, and other PCs to no avail. I'm not sure if this has to do with the operating system?

It works perfectly fine on the old Windows98SE. I want to get the data off of it, but none of my new external hard drives are read by my old Win98SE system either without problems/CDs/etc.

Was just wondering if anyone could help?

Thanks much!

Hello guys,

I have a problem. Whenever i plug in my external hard drive (1TB Maxtor) in my pc, it doesn't show up. It has always been working, but since i've installed Windows 7 yesterday it doesn't work anymore. So it HAS to be something to do with Windows 7.

Anyone knows any solution? Please help me, because all my documents are stored on this external hard drive and i need them on this pc.

Thanks,
Pim

EDIT:
It does show up in disk manager (don't know how it's called in english, i use dutch windows 7) and it even shows the model and brand name of the drive. So i am wondering why it won't show up in explorer?

I don't know if this is the right forum for my problem.
I had a new desktop pc built about six months ago and it seemed fine except for one thing. The Seagate external hard drive had stopped backing up despite being set to continuous. It had worked perfectly on my laptop which the desktop pc replaced. Not knowing what I was doing I not only uninstalled Seagate but formatted it too resulting in the loss of everything.
So I bought a Western Digital My Passport external drive, plugged it in and it backed up. Since then, though set to continuous back up, it just doesn't do it. Nor does Dropbox. Data files are just not being updated though WD and Dropbox say they are up to date. Manual updating works. I feel sure the problem is not with the external drives but with the Microsoft system, that there is a box somewhere that needs changing. Can anybody give me any clues please? If I'd wanted to do a manual update every day I'd have stuck with a USB stick.
My system is a 64 bit Win7 and I have plenty of memory. I run Firefox, Bit Defender (I recently changed from AVG) and Malware Bytes.
Any help would be appreciated.

I've got a problem that I just can't seem to wrap my head around. I've got a custom-built PC with an Asus K8N-VM motherboard, and it doesn't want to read my Hitachi external hard disk. I got it to work for a few shining moments a couple weeks ago, but couldn't quite get it to function afterwards. I have no idea what I did to get it working, as I was running the Traditional Chinese version of Windows XP at the time. As this OS had been giving me no small amount of trouble ( and also, I can't read Chinese), I bought and installed the English version this week, assuming that the non-twitchy English version would solve the problem.

It didn't. When I plug the device into the two front USB ports, I get that USB Device Not Recognized message in the lower right corner, and it shows up as an Unknown Device in the Device Manager. When I try it in the four ports in the back, I get no message whatsoever and nothing shows up in the Device Manager. In neither case does the extra memory show up in the Disk Management menu. It's not a problem with the USB ports; they work just fine when I plug in my memory stick or my digital camera card ( in fact, they work even better than they did when I had the Chinese OS). The external HD works fine when I use it on my laptop ( also running XP). I'm at a loss. Anyone out there have any idea what could be causing this?

Answer:PC doesn't recognize external hard drive

this is what I found
My external drive is not detected in Windows XP/2000 (and displays a yellow ! icon next to it in the Device Manager)
If your external drive is not detected in Windows XP/2000, it is always a good idea to check the Disk Management and Device Manager.

Right-click on My Computer.

Click on Manage.

Choose Disk Management from the left column.

Try to find the external drive in the lower window. It should be "Disk 1" or some other number (but not Disk 0).

Then choose Device Manager from the left column.

Choose Disk drives.

If the drive is not seen there, check under Universal Serial Bus Controllers (if the drive is connected via USB). The drive should appear as a USB Mass Storage Device.

If a yellow ! icon is displayed next to it, double-click on the drive.

A Properties window will appear and will probably say "This device is not working properly" and will give either (Code 28) or (Code 10).

If Code 10 appears, the drive has most probably failed. Verify by trying the drive with another USB cable or port, or on another computer. You can begin a drive replacement order online.

If Code 28 appears, you will need to test the drive on another computer. If the drive works fine on another computer, there are a few steps to follow:

Open a Windows Explorer window (right-click on Start > Explore).

In the address bar, type c:\windows\inf and press Enter.

Right-click on the file INFCACHE.1.

Is there a specific key or sets of key strokes required?
I end up pressing the power button which tells me it did not shut down properly.

I have disabled the sleep and hibernate functions in the meantime.
thanks

Answer:Satellite L350 - Doesn't wake up from sleep mode

Hi

You should check if your BIOS is up to date.

Usually there is no special procedure to wake up the unit from sleep or hibernation mode? You have to press the power button (very short) and this will wake up the unit from sleep mode.

Been going on for a couple of weeks now.

First, I had to add this: because I have a display port connected monitor, I this program (Turn off your notebook LCD with one-click | Redmond Pie) to put my monitors to sleep instead of switching them off. 2 monitors, 1 hdmi, the other on DP.

Unlike hdmi/dvi/vga connections, display port monitors seem to be treated as a total disconnect when it gets switched off, which means it keeps causing windows to refresh the screen and readjust the desktop primary/secondary desktop and rearrange the icons, which is extremely annoying.

About 1-2 weeks back, my computer would automatically force the monitors to go to sleep.

The system itself is still active. Whatever programs are playing sounds will continue. I can turn on and off the caps button, etc. However, I don't seem to have control. Ctrl-alt-del is unresponsive, and blind clicks to browser windows playing videos doesn't seem to work.

It could be a hardware issue.

Sometimes when it triggers, there will be a split second buzz, where the sound the pc is playing hangs for a second, then it continues, but the monitors go to sleep.

Almost always, just before the monitor sleeps, the monitor goes black, a console cursor appears at the top left, then they sleep.

It looks very similar to what the program I downloaded does. I've changed the file name, but it still happens, so I doubt it's that program that's triggering.

I must always do a hard power off to restart.

Does so randomly.

My laptop (Windows Vista 32 bit) is unable to wake up from sleep or hibernate.
Laptop is set to the Balanced Power Scheme.

However, once the display has turned off (after 10 minutes), I am unable to wake it up.
Unable to open Task Manager, Shut Down, nothing works, all I see is a black screen, the disk access light blinking and the fan running.

I end up holding the power button to switch off.
This is a recent development, it might have started when I installed Office 2010 on the laptop.

Answer:Satellite P300-13J doesn't wake up from Sleep or Hibernate

Hi

Since when did you notice this issue?
Was this issue present after clean system installation?

How about the BIOS? Is it up to date?
I read in some threads that BIOS update could helps to sort out such similar problems.
So BIOS update is definitely worth a try.

Also the display driver update would be recommended. Of course just in case you are not using the latest version.

By the way: is Win 7 an option for you? The Win 7 is much better and lot of different issues which appeared in Vista system, have been foxed in Win 7

Hey everyone,

I've got a self-built PC that has been running great since 2010 without issue. However, I recently found that the sleep function no longer performs as expected. The computer sleeps on command but wakes just 3-4 seconds later. Worse, the system is totally unresponsive after waking, with no video to the monitor. I own a backlit USB keyboard (Corsair K90) and the keys weirdly flicker when I try to type in this state. The only way to exit the state is by a hard shutdown. I can't seem to pinpoint the issue since "powercfg lastwake" returns an empty wake history by next boot. I also haven't installed any new hardware since having the problem. I found a troubleshooting guide for sleep issues and followed that, and the only device that is able to wake my computer is the keyboard, according to windows. I'm wondering what to do since I'd love to have my computer always available but leaving it on wastes a ton of power. Thanks for reading my question.

PS. I think this could be related to RAM. Under normal operation (after a fresh boot), the ram status led's are all green, meaning that there are no issues. However, when in the above unresponsive state, I fond that the same status led's are orange, a warning indicator. I am using S3 sleep, so the session is always saved to RAM. Just what I know, hopefully it's a clue to the solution. Thanks again.

Hello,

I have a lenovo y700 on Windows 10 and when I put my laptop to sleep, I am able to turn it back on. But sometimes the screen stays black and the keyboard lights are on. Such that the computer did start up but the screen doesn't want to.

The only way I am able to fix this is buy putting the computer to sleep multiple times and then wake it up back again and after once or twice it starts to work. The solution (fool-proof) is to hold the power button to shut it down and then start it up again.

I bought this laptop a week ago and (yes) I updated all my drivers(including NVIDA GPU) and windows updates. I also don't have that many background apps running.

Hello, I would like to ask a question about my desktop here. After upgrading to Windows 8.1, I noticed that there has been a problem with my display. It doesn't happen everytime, but randomly, when the computer is idle for 10 minutes and the screen is automatically turned off, it won't turn back on anymore. Normally, I will just move the mouse and the display will turn back on again. However, when the problem happens, no matter what I do, moving the mouse, typing in the keyboard, it won't turn back on. I even tried to press the shutdown button, thinking that the computer is just sleeping and it will wake up again, however it doesn't do anything. The only thing that works is the restart button... I've tried every way to try and stop the problem: uninstalling the graphic drivers and reinstall the latest beta drivers, uninstall the drivers again and install the WHQL drivers, installing monitor drivers, checking out the power options and making sure that the computer isn't set to sleep after a timeout period... Nothing works, the problem will still randomly happen again after the desktop turns off the display monitor. My graphic card is Sapphire Radeon R9 270.. does anyone have any solution to this problem of mine? Help is greatly appreciated, I'm very tired of this happening suddenly, I do not want to lose my data from restarting the computer...

Answer:Lenovo y700 screen doesn't wake up from sleep

Hi bouga ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Checking on the support site for   Notebook IP Y700-15ISK I7 , seems no BIOS update needed for this model.
Typically even on Win Vista and Windows 7 that issue with sleep has been related to hybrid features.

Method 1 : You may try to disable it using the cmd elevated for the command  powercfg -h off .
Check on this video link for the guide steps

Method 2 : Setting Power option to High Performance instead of conservation mode . then manualy setting sleep on the start icon

Continue to apply neccessary updates that may correct this issue but for the time being , you can use Method 2 as alternate solution if method 1 fail to correct it.

Hope this helps.

Upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.When laptop lid is closed, after about an hour or more the power light is steady on.Laptop will not wake from Sleep Mode.  Keypad, or any other key does not wake this up.Hard shutdown/reboot via holding power key does force a reboot and system works after that.Have put this manually into Sleep Mode and power light blinks and wakes up on keyboard select.  Long term sleep causes problem to recur when manually placed into sleep mode I have updated all drivers including the MEI driver.I have checked power options and all are correct re Sleep Mode.Hibernate Mode is not selected for any Power Profile. I see some reference to installing a backlevel MEI driver version 9.xxxxxxx.  I don't understand how to do that or if that is compatible with my laptop.  I have downloaded in from the Intel website, but have not unzipped it.  Also have seen suggestions to turn off the MEI driver. Any guidance on how to proceed next would be appreciated.  If install of the driver is required, what specifically must I do to accomplish that?

After returning from sleep, the external monitor does not seem to 'wake up'.
In order for it to receive input I need to unplug the HDMI cable and plug it in again.
I have updated all latest drivers, except the BIOS which is on A06 since I do not want to upgrade it (yet) since the higher versions currently cause the screen's brightness to flicker. Unless this BIOS is known to address these issues (not listed in the details) I do not see a reason to upgrade it (again).

This system is a upgrade from a x201. My x201 would wake when moving the mouse or pressing a key on the external keyboard. My X220 is setup the same way in a dock with an external keyboard and mouse. However on this one I have to press the power button to wake it up. I have checked device manage and the power management settings are set to allow this device to wake the computer. But I have to press the power button. A call to Lenovo support did not help. He told me that the hardware was fine and it was a windows configuration issue and he did not support windows I should call Microsoft. After arguing with him because Lenovo sold me windows he escalated thee ticket for me but does anyone know the answer for this. I am sure it is just a setting somewhere and it not a big issue. But it is one I want to fix. Thanks

Greetings:
I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with a Vista Home Basic Operating System. The laptop works great and I have no problems surfing the web with it while on a wireless network. However, I have an external hard drive (1 Terabyte) plugged into my laptop, USB powered. This external hard disk is increasingly giving me problems. Every time, I visit the folders on this external hard disk, everything on my laptop freezes even my downloads. I am forced to wait until my OS catches up with my commands and carries them out. I start getting responses like "Expansion Drive F: (my external hard drive) (not responding)" and "Mozilla Firefox (not responding). Even a MSWord document I am working on will be become "frozen" during this time. This OS "freeze-up" is very frustrating. Can I do anything to rectify this situation? Some factors have been wondering about are the following:
a) In terms of memory, the external hard disk has far more than my laptop. Could this be the source of the stoppages?
b) When I visit my external hard drive, files are being actively being downloaded to it. Could this be the source of the stoppages?
In the past, I have used this same external hard drive attached to a desktop with XP (SP3) and didn't have any problems what-so-ever with the OS or the hard drive. Any advice given is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Why doesn't my laptop OS work with my external hard drive?

Most commonly, USB external drives over 500GB are not USB powered, but have their own external power supply. It may be that your Laptop's USB port is unable to deliver the power required to run the drive. Does it have the option of plugging in its own power supply?

I have a 250G Maxtor external hard-drive which I took from the shelf and plugged in last night for the first time in several months. At first I noticed the light blinking erratically and also heard a constant clicking sound, the same sound over and over. I disconnected and then reconnected it, and this time the unit worked okay. I was able to access the contents. Later I disconnected and reconnected it several more times, only to find that it no longer works. All I get now is the unending clicking sound.

As far as I know it has been setting on my shelf for three months or so. To my knowledge it hasn't been moved, much less dropped. Assuming that it is irretrievably broken, are all external hard-drives this fragile? I thought I had been storing my stuff relatively safely -- as long as I didn't drop the unit. Maybe I was wrong. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help.

I have a brand new T530. I have applied all of the updates from Lenovo and Microsoft. I have an ordinary Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1TB external hard drive. The T530 detects that it is a FreeAgent GoFlex but does not assign a drive letter. In "Disk Management", I can see the drive but when I try to assign a drive letter I get this error message: "The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date". I tried refreshing but the message occurs again. This drive works fine on my 3 cheap laptops and my employers T520 so I am going to assume there is nothing with it. I also have an older 640GB external hard drive and that works fine on the T530. I am confused. Any ideas?

Answer:T530 doesn't mount External Hard Drive

Hey albert1234,

Could you try below:

I can suggest a work around using Diskpart tool in elevated command prompt. You have already enabled the required USB options in your BIOS setup, connected the ext HDD directly to a USB-2 port of this PC, checked Device Manger > Disk Drives to make sure your Ext HDD ( make and model?) is seen without problems etc.

Click Start
Type in CMD toward the top of Start Menu under Programs (N) N=number
Right click CMD > Run as administartor
Type in and press ENTER the command DISKPAT at the Prompt (>) > DISKPART [ENTER]
Type in and press ENTER the command LIST DISK at the Prompt > LIST DISK [ENTER]
Type in and press ENTER the command SELECT DISK N (N=your disk number) >SELECT DISK N [ENTER]

For other options like partition etc in Diskpart type Help or ? at the command prompt Ex: DISKPART>HELP [ENTER]

If this doesn't help others have had luck with uninstalling the driver for the device, I then Force Installed a different generic driver and it seemed to work fine. If it works or you have any other questions please post back.

Best Regards,

Hiro

Greetings,
I've really gotten on this.
From my computer I can access my external hard disk, but when I go to create a recovery image the computer doesn't see the external drive.

Is there a setting somewhere I can change?
All my searches tell me about reading the backup from a non detected drive not saving onto a semi detected drive.

Cheers

Answer:Location backup doesn't see my external hard drive

Hello windam and welcome to Seven Forums.

It might help to diagnose the problem if you could post a screenshot of your maximized Disk Managment window. It's possible the external drive doesn't have a drive letter assigned, or some other issue.

It would also help to know which imaging utility you're using; the native Windows 7, Macrium, etc.

Hey there, I just bought  WD external hard drive (link is below)http://support.wdc.com/product/kb.asp?modelno=WD3200H1U-00&x=13&y=14aanndd, I'm runnin Vista 64 bit.I'm having trouble installing the hard drive. when I double click setup.exe, a window pops up and says,"To run this program, version 8 or greater of Flash ActiveX Control is needed. You can download it at etc. etc. etc..."Well, I have version 9 or 10 or whichever new version there is. Also, while this window is up, another window is up in the top left corner, and it is green?I hit cancel, because I DO have flash and then it says this:When I went to "Solutions Online" it just told me the problem was caused by Flash and I'd have to install it. Well I uninstalled it, reinstalled it and I still have the same problem. Has anyone else encountered this?? It's really weird.

Hey,

I have a Philips 320gb external hard drive with three partitions. Two are true-crypted and one is normal, formatted with Fat 32 I believe.

I recently got two laptops reformatted and had XP SP3 installed on them in a shop because they came with Vista and wouldn't boot directly from my standard XP disk.

When I plug my hard drive into them, the first (encrypted) partition registers and I can mount it as normal with TC, but the other two partitions don't show up at all. But it works fine on every other computer, and other USB drives work fine on the newly formatted ones.

All partitions show up in Disk Manager and it says they are 'Healthy'.

I have tried several things, including:
- trying all the USB ports
- making sure Windows is updated
- 'Scan for hardware changes' and 'update driver' in Disk Management
- changing the drive letter in Disk Manager
- using TweakUI to check all drives were enabled
- disabling the 1394 connection and rebooting (as some forums suggested)
- taking it back to the shop (they had no idea what the problem was)

Any ideas?

Thanks

Answer:External hard drive doesn't register properly

I forgot something: In once computer, a Toshiba Satellite, in Device Manager, if I select 'Show hidden devices' there appears 'Unknown device' under PCI Bus. I cannot install it because the computer can't find any software for it.

In the second, a Compaq, the same process reveals Non-Plug and Play Drivers>Other devices>Keyboard_Filter_01, and Non-P and P Drivers>Serial which is 'not present, not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)'

I don't know if either of these are related to the other issues.

Cheers,
d.

System: Win 7 Home, SP1 with latest update.
Hard Drive: Seagate 3 TB external hard drive. Automatically turns on, no power switch.

Here's the problem. My external hard drive no longer wants to play nicely with my laptop, or vice versa. Now, I have my mouse plugged into one of the USBs, (doesn't matter which one, I move it around) and it works fine. Flash drives, same thing, no problem. Same with both of my game controllers. Never a problem.

I go to plug in my external hard drive, and either it will come on for like 60 seconds and then go away, or it doesn't come on at all. However, if my husband plugs in my external hard drive to his computer, which, by the way is the exact same as my computer, both laptops of the same brand and model, it comes on within 10 seconds and stays on.

My external hard drive USED to work on my laptop just fine. And, my smaller (1 tb Iomega) external hard drive works great on this laptop.

So, what did I inadvertently change to make my laptop no longer wish to speak to my external hard drive? I'll bet it's something really simple.

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated, and not argued with in the least!! I promise! (my husband is making me say that. LOL)

Thank you!!

Lynn

I have a Toshiba EHD 300GB.. When I first connected it, it had its own unique icon.. I decided to format it and now it's icon is a plain white sheet with little squares .. I've tried doing the procedure in this link (Drive Icon Change - Vista Forums) but it still didn't work. I'd love to show you what it looks like, but I don't know how to paste the image I captured.

I've tried renaming it, but that doesn't help. It doesn't even want to be renamed.

I was thinking if there's any other way we could return that unique icon it had and rename it other than the link I followed above.

My EHD works perfectly. I'm just bothered as to why I can't change the icon and its name. Thanks in advance for your advices..

Answer:External Hard Drive name and icon doesn't change

Hello Paxnominus,

For Windows 7, you might use these tutorials instead.Drive Icon - Change

and

Drive - Rename
Double check the item in the yellow TIP box at the top of the tutorial to see if you may have a autorun.inf file on the root of the external drive that needs to be deleted.

If Option One did not work, then be sure to also try Option Two as well.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi, I've just bought a Formac 250gb usb 2.0 external hard drive from ebuyer but when i plug it into my machine it's not recognised in any way other than under 'safely remove hardware'.

It's not shown under my computer or in disc management. I've tried plugging it in different usb slots (all of which work fine with other devices) but no luck.

When i first hooked it up the little bubble came up in the bottom right corner sayin 'found new hardware' followed by 'your new hardware is now installed and ready to use'.

I tried plugging into a slightly newer computer and it works fine so the problem must be somewhere on my machine.

I'm running XP SP2 but i heard somewhere that older (slower) machines can't register large external hard drives. I'm only running an AMD 1.21GHz processor with 384Mb RAM. Is this too slow or is there something else that it could be? There are no mimim system requirements on the box / instructions etc.

Any help would be very much apreciated!

I"ve had a Simpletech external hard drive for a few years now, and it's worked great on every computer that's had Windows XP (it's a plug and play). However, I just bought a new laptop with Windows 7, and when I tried to plug it in to the USB port on it, it just told me "USB device not recognized." The power light comes on, too. This is a brand new computer, so I'm not taking it apart to reassemble anything, and the external HD still works fine on my XP computers, so I know it has to be something about Windows 7 it doesn't like.

I had my WD external hard drive for more than a year now, and it worked fine until today.

My laptop suddenly won't recognize my external hard drive.

I have two USB ports and they seem to be working just fine; I've tried with different devices.

I plugged my external hard drive to my friend's laptop, and that worked fine...so I have no idea what's wrong.

The LED light on the hard drive stays lit (very few or no blinking) and there's no spinning or ventilating sound at all.

Seems like only the light is on without the device actually working.

Could anyone help please?

Thanks.

So did you complete all of the advice in this thread HERE and is exactly what you mention above in letting you have access or not allowing you access.

When I do the steps above it says that its working properly, but it does let me have access to it.Click to expand...

Is your Windows 7 fully upto date with all updates and hotfixes?

What is the make and model of External HDD?
Have you tried the drive in another PC and did it work ok?
Has the drive been working ok for a while and this is a new occurance of has this gone on since you have had the drive?
Was the external HDD formatted in a Windows XP PC originally at all and what File Format is being used (FAT, FAT32 or NTFS)?

What I would try is to delete the driver for the mass storage device in Device Manager (also while in device manager are there any devices with yellow ! marks and if so what) and to do this on the correct drive, dont have the USB drive pluged in, then in Device Manager open the Universal Serial Bus Controllers branch, then plug in the drive and a new hardware item will appear, likely a mass storage device, once this appears right click it and choose uninstall, then unplug the external HDD and reboot, then plug in the external drive and Windows will re-install* the driver

Hello all,
Hopefully I've posted this in the right place.  I have an Asus G60VX gaming PC. I'm using 64 bit Windows Vista. I had my hard drive replaced a few months ago and am now just using it a lot. Over the past week I seem to have been having this issue but now it's really coming now. It's happened twice yesterday. When I close the lid it goes into sleep mode, then when I open it, the lights on the center part of the outside of the lid (Republic of Gaming logo) come on as do a couple of lights near the power button but the screen remains black and I have to hold down the power button to restart it. I don't like doing this because I was told it fries the motherboard and harddrive. After it reboots Windows Error Recovery comes up and prompts me to go to safe mode or start windows normally. I'm pretty sure my drivers are updated although I'm not 100% sure about BIOS. I've tried enabling/disabling hibernate but according to the command prompt I don't have permission. I'm all out of ideas.  Also, when I took my PC in to get the hard drive upgraded, the guy said there was a bug in some Asus models that cause a black screen whenever you restart them.  Has anyone heard of this or did he mess something up and just told me this?  Thanks.

EDIT: Actually according to System Information it's a G60VX.

My wireless HP keyboard Sleep function used to work perfectly before Windows 10 install. Simply used to hit the Sleep button to close down, and then again to reactivate the computer. Since installing Windows 10 it works to shut down, but does not reawaken the system. Very annoying - I don't want to have to open my laptop and hit the Power button every time, please advise how to resolve.

Answer:Why doesn't the wake from Sleep function work after Windows 10 update?

At this time, the best thing I can suggest is to report the issue via Windows Feedback to make sure that Microsoft is aware of the issue. There are others reporting this issue on the Surface Pro 3, so this is not an isolated incident.
Also see, http://forums.windowscentral.com/ask...ter-sleep.html
There are more threads as well, but just to let you know you aren't alone. It's not a solution, but reporting to Microsoft will help lead to a solution faster.

When I put my laptop to sleep and then attempt to wake it up, it will power on (going through the boot up screens) instead of just waking up, thus causing me to lose any information open on the computer.

I have tried a few things to try to wake it up to no avail:
sfc /scannow in cmd
unplug all usb devices before going to sleep/waking up
rollback graphics drivers
resetting power plan settings and power button settings back to default state

Is there some memory dump file I could send to help fix this?

Just got my T510 yesterday.  I turned it on and it booted up with no problems.  I started running windows updates and other "new pc" kind of things.  I got busy with other things, and had to leave the machine for a while.  Came back, and noticed it was sleeping or hibernating or something.  The green power light was glowing off and on like it was asleep, but I could not wake it up.  I tried the power button, the track pad, the keys, cntl alt del...but nothing work.  The only thing that worked was holding the power down until it forced off. Turned it back on and it booted up like normal.  Went to the power saving settings and turned off the sleep settings, then found the manual sleep settings and put it to sleep.  Had the same trouble getting it out of sleep so had to force it off again, but again, it booted back up with no problems. This morning, I go to turn the laptop on and it won't turn on reliably.  I press the on button several different ways....holding it down for a long time, giving it a quick press, giving it 3 or 4 quick presses, press while standing on my head, etc.  However, nothing seems to work.  Then, I'll just give it a random press after I've just about given up and it will start up like normal.  It is plugged into the wall, so it doesn't seem to be a battery issue, and I have tried unplugging it from the wall and trying that as well.  I see it is getting power.  When it... I usually lower the laptop lid when i want to put it into sleep mode; after the windows 10 update, this stopped working. I tried putting it into sleep mode from the start menue. This causes the screen to become black, but power to remain on ( I can see this from a steady light from the power button whereas sleep would have a flashing power button). The laptop's fan also increases in speed. When I try to wake the laptop, nothing happenes; I have tried to use ctrl+alt+delete, however this also does not work. I am ususally forced to resort to a manual shut down via holding the power button for a few second and restarting the laptop. I have tried updating the display adapters, restarted the laptop, and still no result. Does anyone know why this is happenning and how I can fix it?

Answer:Laptop doesn't wake after sleep mode after Windows 10 update

I was having the Exact Same Issue. The reason I decided to go back to windows 8 was because since upgrading to Windows 10, when my computer goes into sleep mode, I cannot wake it up. I have to press and hold the power button to shut it done and restart. Even if I close my laptop, and reopen the lid, it wont start back up and I have to press and hold the power button and shut it down and restart.  After trying to restore my HP Envy Laptop from Windows 10 to Windows 8, it got stuck in a Repair PC Loop and I could not even access the desktop, I tried the restore option to an earlier date and that failed and all the repair options also failed. The last option I had was to do a full PC Refresh, and that one worked. It took about an hour but no data was lost, and only a few of my downloaded apps were removed. An html url was left on the desktop that showed a list of all the apps that were removed. So all I did was download those back and now im back up and running Windows 8.

Hi,
I have a Lenovo t61 laptop with Windows Vista. I have a western digital mybook essential edition 250GB which I previously used with my old laptop which ran XP. When I safely remove the hard drive, the computer gives me the message that the hard drive has been succesfully disconnected, however the ring light on the external hard drive remains on. Ideally, this light should go off once I have disconnected the hard drive.
I have have tried using the Western Digital Spindown program, but the light still remains on. My only option is to manually turn the hard drive off, which the manufacturer says not to do.
What can I do so that the external hard drive disconnects properly?
Thanks

Answer:Vista doesn't properly disconnect external hard drive

Does your hard drive have a separate power source/cord? I don't know about the 250G drives, but the 500G MyBookI have is powered by a cord (rather than the USB port). And even if I disconnect the drive from the PC, the light on mine stays on until the power itself is cut off.

I have a Seagate GoFlex Desk 3TB external hard drive. I got it about.. 6 months ago and I've never had a problem with it up until last week.
I plugged it in and it started making a normal fan sound like is usually does, then after a few seconds it stopped which made it seem like it was shut off.
It's been doing this constantly since last week and I don't know what the problem is, or how to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Seagate External Hard drive, starts up but doesn't finish.

Just a thought (or 2):
Try using a different USB port.
Try jiggling the USB in the socket (gently).
Try a different USB cable.
Be sure that you test with the laptop on power supply, not just battery.
Obviously I'm thinking that the connection is faulty somehow, which would disconnect and power down the external - even if it has it's own power supply.
