Complete lock-ups every time PC is turned on

Question: Complete lock-ups every time PC is turned on

Hi there,

Since I got my current PC I've had an issue where it would occassionally completely lock-up, i.e. completely still image on screen, mouse wouldn't move, and it also put out a buzzing sound through the speakers/headphones. The only option was to force shutdown and start it up again. But it didn't happen that often so I wasn't bothered by it much.

However since updating to Windows 8 it is now happening about 15 minutes into use every time I turn the PC on (but after rebooting doesn't happen again until the next time I turn it on), so I'm looking for a solution now.

Has anyone seen something like this, or got any advise?

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Complete lock-ups every time PC is turned on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

WOW!! Exactly what I'm seeing!!!

Usually occurs within 15 minutes of booting. Once a day only. I've had the computer off over 8 hours one day and when turned on it didn't happen... only the FIRST boot of the day. Works fine on any reboots after?

I have gotten random different BSOD's too.

I've also had days at a time when this didn't happen? I did nothing at all to change anything either. Then it starts happening again?

Things I have tried though:

Removed ANY unnecessary programs I had. This computer started with Vista, upgraded to W7, then W8 (when it started happening) and now W8.1, so I did collect a lot of 'junk'.
Stopped AutoStarting anything I didn't really need or could manually start later.
Changed Video card as old ATI was not support in any way but Legacy (i.e., no new drivers) with a newer ATI card that was supported.
Suspecting a hard drive C: error, I replaced my SSD with another one that had failed before (when on W8) and was returned to vendor and replaced. Problem continued, not the disk.
Discovered a 'sort' of possible bug in Windows not creating a dump. Turns out my 'system' setting for the swapfile was too small and I moved it to another hard drive. Reset it to the C: drive and set the initial swap size to more than my 8GB's of RAM. Today I got a BSOD with an SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION (CI.DLL), but I think this is bogus and the first time I've seen this one.
All indications it is a S/W driver, but which one, and one that only runs ONCE A DAY?

My services were offered by my father to a guy to install a dual boot on his system. I have done this procedure before so I felt fairly comfortable doing it on a system belonging to a business. However, mid dual boot procedure I start recieving BootMGR Missing Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to reboot. Immediatly I hit google; however, all given solutions prove to be negative in fixing.
The gentalman was supposed to have backed up his system for me, the words out of his mouth are "I'm doing as we speak". Vista came preinstalled so I have no Vista Home Premium x64 disks. So, I call up the guy and he says somethings came up and he couldn't make them but what ever I do make sure I get vista working again, don't lose his stuff.
Now it's forget the dual boot just get vista back, but this damn BootMGR won't stop popping up. I'm at a loss of things to do.

Hello Aaon, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might see if running a Startup Repair on the drive Vista is on to see if it can repair the boot MBR file for it.

Hope this helps,

Hello all, I have a G500 laptop.  When it boots up, I would like the Num Lock to automatically be turned on.  I can't see anything in the BIOS that would do that.  Any other places I should be looking?  Any other way to keep it turned on? Thanks! Dan JablonsRetail Smart Guyswww.retailsmartguys.com

Answer:Boot with Num Lock turned on

Hi Dan, welcome,

I don't know if this will work on your specific machine or OS.  It did work (actually caused some problems) on a somewhat older machine.

Bring up the on-screen keyboard: in Win 7 start->search-> "on-screen keyboard".  Click the Options button and tick the "turn on numeric keyboard" check box.  That should add a NumLock key to the on-screen keyboard.  Click that.

On a U160 that caused NumLock to persist on reboot.

Question: Complete Lock up

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/3/img0764d.jpg/sr=1First I am more than adequate when dealing with computer issues. I was a computer science major. Yes, was... Anyway my problem is this. I am running XP 32 bit, all service pack updates, all other windows updates, and updated every driver manually. I am the same issue on two different hard drives I tried. I also bought a cheap however new video card to see if that was the issue, it wasn't. My problem is my computer will COMPLETELY freeze up at times. No CTRL ALT DEL does nothing. It is a complete lock up. This problem occurs EVERYTIME I stream a video offline, flash is the worst, but all streaming videos freeze the computer. It happens anywhere from right away to sometimes 3-4 minutes in. I can play .mpeg movies or video that isn't streaming a lot better. However the crash usually will occur eventually sometimes not for 1 hour into the .mpeg movie. The freez does come with some warning when watching a streaming video, usually chrome or firefox will crash first then when I go to watch it again, the main freeze occurs. Also it seems like graphically intense websites like ESPN or IGN also cause the freeze sometime right away, sometime 10-15 minutes into surfing. The computer also will often freeze on startup as soon as the start button and tray icons start loading. This is less occasionaly but still frequent. The computer will also sometimes restart itself with freezing then restart again mid startup. I don't kno... Read more

Question: Complete lock up

Bought a GF4 Ti 4400 from OCSystem running at 304/673. Computer locks up completely playing Unreal Tournament. Could this be a problem with the on board sound not keeping up with the faster frame rate? When it freezes the sound reverberates the last few notes of the music continuously. The same thing happened when I overclocked a stock 4200.

Much Thanks

Answer:Complete lock up

my first port of call would be, update ALL drivers. Start with the graphics card but do not stop there.... mobo drivers, even sound card, etc. Install all upgrades for the OS as in a good few visits to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and put on any available service packs, etc. Set your BIOS to default settings. Ensure case is well ventilated and cooled. Look out for other programs running at the same time.

Hi

My neighbors computer is completely virus ridden. An IT person came out and wanted to charge $400 for a clean reinstall so i said i would do it

She has windows xp and i recommended that she purchase windows 7. After purchasing the upgrade pack i put it in and selected custom (the clean reinstall option of the two).

It gets to the "expanding windows files" part and then locks up at 42% every time. I cannot move the mouse.

Any ideas on how to get through this? could it be a problem with the disk?

Cheers

Phil

Question: Complete Lock up

Hey, its been some time since i last posted. Unfortunately i have yet another problem, well two actually, but one is media.

Anyways, my desktop (specs off the top of my head below) randomly locks up, whether it be typing, burning, surfing, chatting, etc. And by locks up, i mean total lock up. I have to compare the clock on my desktop to my laptop's clock. this whole thing started about a week ago, was fine for a day or so, but has begun to get worse. I've already done some software maintenance and am about ready to do a scan disc check and possibly a defrag, but other than that, along with a complete system restore, i'm at a loss.

(side note: i have to pull the plug for it to work again, system metrix shows little to no CPU usage, and only about half RAM usage when it locks up.)

OS: Windows XP SP2
Intel pentium 4 processor HT
Stock 200 GB Seagate SATA HD
Seagate barracuta 320 GB SATA HD
1536 MB dual channel RAM (has original dual channel of 512, and 1 GB dual channel) PC3200 400 Mhz.
Has two TSST four way optical combo drives

um.. i think a 300watt power source.

Now, before i started having problems, all of this was working fine. I had recently gotten a 500 GB external harddrive and that worked fine with everything prior to the lock ups. All software that i installed during and after the lock ups i've pretty much uninstalled. If you need any more info, let me know. I really need to get this resolved because its really starting to become a hass... Read more

A few months ago, I purchased a brand new Sony Viao laptop (Windows 7 Home). This thing has an i7 processor, dedicated graphics, a 7200 RPM hard drive, etc... it's very powerful by laptop standards.

Despite this hardware, I've been experiencing some really bizarre behavior. For some reason, I'll experience frequent, intermittent lockups. I experience them at least once a minute, and each lockup lasts about 10-15 seconds.

Here are some examples:

- I go to load a page in Firefox, and while the page is loading, the entire browser locks up and "stops responding". It always recovers from this, but this is VERY common.

- I try to simply move a (Windows, not Internet) explorer window, and the entire system becomes unresponsive. After a 10 second delay, the window now moves to where I dragged it.

- I click on the start menu, explorer hangs completely for 15 seconds, and then the start menu finally opens.

Anytime this occurs, all interactive / UI events completely stop. For instance, in any Windows program, if you hover over the top menu bar, the background color of "File", "Edit" (...etc...) change as you hover over them. When this unresponsive stuff occurs, ALL of those subtle things completely cease to function. Basically, it's like the entire computer has frozen. Most of the time I can still move my mouse, but sometimes the mouse stops responding to user input as well. This sort of stuff is very frequent, but also sporadic and so... Read more

Seemingly randomly, everything freezes on my computer. Although I haven't been able to completely narrow it down, it's almost always when I'm just using the internet (firefox), without games or anything running (I've seen it a few times in Supreme Commander, but I *think*, not sure, that that's different), and, more annoyingly, often seems to happen when I'm out of the room.

Sometimes when I'm using the computer, everything will freeze up, I will move the mouse around on the pad, and suddenly a minute or so later the cursor will have jumped position and the system will begin working again. That's the "partial" lock-up. Other times, generally when I'm out of the room, I will come back and find the everything frozen, but it never moves again until I reset the machine.

Nothing is logged in the event log after either of these freezes, in fact the last time I saw a complete freeze I restarted and saw nothing had been logged at all for 30 minutes before the freeze.

I also remember this being a problem a while ago, and at the time I persevered and eventually just asked windows to install over itself. That seemed to fix it, but just in the last week or so (I think), I've noticed it again.

Can anyone help?

Been having an issue lately that I can't quite seem to nail down, so I turn to the community for help.

Recently swapped out my MSI P6N Diamond Mobo for a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P because I was having all kinds of memory issues. I've had it running fine for the past few weeks. 2 days ago I added my third 1TB WD Caviar Black drive and another 2 GB of memory when the computer started hanging, screens stay active but the system is dead and have to do a hard reboot. Disconnected the SATA cable only from the drive and removed the new RAM same issue. Memory passes memtest. Boot into safe mode, don't have any issues, so I figured it was a software issue. Backed up my files and reinstalled windows. Upon booting back up the problem was still present. Comfortable with my RAM being fine I disconnected the power from 2 hard drives (the new one and the smaller one that I don't use too often) and the issues went away. Reconnected these drives on a different rail and the problems were still gone, but after a day they've started to reemerge, but not as bad as they were.

Would 3 SATA drives really tax the rail that much that I'm freezing the system? It doesn't make sense to me.

All of my drivers are up to date to my knowledge.

edit - added a file

Answer:No BSOD just a complete lock up

Another detail of note since this issue is back to craptastic, 3 lock ups in the past half hour, is that when the screens lock I can still hear the hard drive working for a few seconds, but the indicator light remains out.

This has been frustrating me for a while. Occasionally, and now more often, my computer just freezes. I mean, mouse won't move, Task Manager won't open—completely frozen. The first few times it happened was while running McAfee Virus Scan. Now, I just hope I can finish this thread before I lock up. I tried running Spybot and, it went so quickly, it popped up an entry with one of those white, upsidedown yield signs with the exclamation point saying something about a serious Windows error, and then the machine just shut down. Not frozen, shut down. Power off. Had to unplug it and wait a few seconds because it wouldn't turn back on. As for relevant software on my computer, my main defense is McAfee Security Center. I also have CCleaner which I run everytime I log offline (and, by the way, it locked up on me last when trying to download the latest version of CCleaner) newly installed Spybot, try-out versions (which have expired; considering buying one or both) of True Sword (which Spybot did find as malware with 65 entries including two registry keys) and Registry Booster. Following is a HijackThis log of my machine. If there are any "hijackers" out there with some help or advice, I would sure appreciate it. Thanks!

Alright, so a couple of weeks ago I started to experience some issues with Windows 7 doing a complete lock-up out of no-where. This is a brand new computer that I built roughly 2 months ago. The problems started probably 2 -3 weeks after I built this machine.

How the issue came about, I was doing some beta-testing of software for a company I work for. One of the programs I had installed (which at the time I didnt think much of it) made some changes to my network drivers (suppose to be a privatized VPN connection). After realizing that the VPN connection it had made was actually bogus, I removed the software & the all the connections it had made.

Roughly 2 days afterwards I started having BSODs out of no-where all related to memory management. So I started running diags, tested all the memory in this machine, physically pulled each piece out and tested it in a seperate machine, and couldn't identify the issue. So, I decided that it was probably a virus that was causing the issue. Avast, Avg, SuperAntiSpyware, Microsoft Malware, and several others all come back with "nothing found" (which of course I didnt install & run them all at the same time).

Getting annoyed with the BSODs, I ran a couple of registry cleaners to see if the issue was related to some piece of software that didnt get removed all the way. After running the registry cleaner, several issues were found and "fixed". Which, from that point forward, I have no longer had any BSODs.

The CBS log shows corruption of graphical portions of Windows. They may have been caused by the removal of the VPN software you speak of.

Have you tried re-installing Windows?

For future reference: avoid registry cleaners. They do more harm than good.

Hi all,

Occasionally I am getting a complete freeze on my machine with no error message or BSOD. During the freeze I've noticed the following:

Sometimes the circle 'thinking/working' curser is still animated, whereas nothing else on the screen is (flash adverts, typing curser, etc)

Caps lock, scroll lock and number lock all stop working, but F-LOCK still turns its light on and off when pressed. No other keys or buttons on he keyboard work.

The machine has to be manually restarted and is fine again once it boots (I do, however, get 'windows did not shut down properly...do you want to start in safemode' message on boot)

At the moment, I can't find anything which can recreate the problem. It doesn't appear to be a particular piece of software that causes the crash.

I have recently upgraded motherboard, RAM and video card, but the instabilities were before these updates (I have carried out a RAM test and it appears fine)

I reinstalled windows yesterday, but I am still getting the freeze...as far as I can tell, it normally happens if I click on a link or a button or something. What I mean is, I don't think I've ever wiggled the mouse and it's been frozen...it's when I, for example, open a new tab or click the back button in my browser (but not always browser related)

Is there any crash log that would be created? I highly doubt it, as the whole machine seems to die, making it unlikely it still has any way of processing ... Read more

Hi, I'm having several issues with my Sony Vaio Windows 7 64bit Home Premium Laptop. A few days ago upon start-up, I received an error message when trying to login to my Admin account. My caps were not on and I was entering the correct password...Error message - "User Profile Failed Logon". I am able to log on to a secondary user account that does not have admin authority; so I'm basically stuck. To make matters worse, I did a bunch of shutdowns/restarts to see if it would fix itself and now I get "password incorrect" error message on Admin acct. I do not have any cd's for the pc due to Hurricane Sandy and I don't have another laptop. I went to Youtube and found a Safe Mode Registry Fix that was super easy and was going to try it...but now that I am no longer receiving the "User Profile Failed Logon" and have subsequently locked myself out...I'm not sure this fix applies. I've read tons of blogs and have visited countless forums and I'm afraid to cause any more damage, lose access to the secondary user account or the ability to connect to the net. I definitely cannot afford to have it serviced and am hoping that I can resolve these issues with your help.

Hi,

I'm experiencing a problem where when transferring files to or from a USB device when plugged into my laptop I get a complete lock up. What will happen is I will copy+paste a file in the usual manor to my laptop from a memory stick, other storage etc. and at some point during the transfer, the animation of the file moving will freeze and the whole computer is locked up and completely non responsive to keyboard or mouse resulting in holding down the power button to switch it off. This happens without error, or strange noises from the laptop it just happens with no warning. It happens with all USB ports (USB ports seem to be fine, although i'm not sure if it's a system where if one breaks, non work) and all usb devices (they work fine on other computers).

The problem doesn't occur unless transferring files (ie: it's fine when viewing the files when you plug it in) and the problem seems to occur when transferring all files (although it is very unlikely to occur when transferring small files such as word documents or images. Very likely to occur with bib .exe files, video files etc).

The problem has been happening for a while. I tried it when creating a new user account but still the same problem.

Any help greatly appreciated with finding out where the problem lays and possible solutions,

Thanks a lot guys,
LJ

Hello there, I was hoping that somebody here in the forum could help me with an issue that keeps occurring for me.

Basically what happens is the computer suddenly stops all functions. The display goes off, the speakers make a buzzing sound, the mouse is unresponsive, the keyboard doesn't work and the disc drive stops also. I cannot shut the computer down by pressing the power button and waiting, however I can shut it down by pressing and holding the power button to shut it down.

This only seems to occur when I am playing Total War: Shogun II currently and not as a result of me clicking anything etc. ( The game can be idle and this can still develop ). I can play any other game without this arising. Also, in the past I could play this game for as long as I wanted and nothing would happen like this, but now it happen indefinitely between 30 minutes and 60 minutes into gameplay.

Here are my computer specifications:

Windows 7 (64-bit)
Intel i5-2500K @ 3.30GHz
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2
ASUS 1155 P8P67 REV 3.0
8GB Ripjaws DDR3 1600MHz
Nvidia Geforce 460GTX
Samsung 1TB Hard Drive
Onboard Audio
Powercool Modular 550W

Any help would be much appreciated, thank you!
P.S. I went about taking some HWMonitor screenies before and during/just after closing the game of my system if it helps?

Hi Darkbound1. Download HWInfo64 and check the CPU temperature.2. If the temperature is high (e.g. Idle at 60+C) or higher, contact Tech Support. (Thermal Paste may have dried up or not applied). Usually, when the temperature is low, the fan would either be off or on low speed.

Hi,

My old topic was 'Am I Infected???' where I posted all the results asked for. The white flag notification shows sometimes that my AV (Avira) is turned off. Am not sure why this is happening. And even when I click on Turn on, it takes time for the cross to go from the white flag. However, my AV application is loaded. Is this an error?

Secondly, I can't seem to save Word docs or other docs in C drive. It says its either write protected, or corrupted or full. I then have to save it in My Documents and then copy and paste into C drive.

Thirdly, I have Glasswire and WhoisonmyWifi apps and I have followed all the steps of staying safe on the net like the mac filtering etc. My computer is working pretty fast and even the internet.

Please do check if my computer is clean and whether my AV is the best one. I'm using the free software of Avira and so far other than the notification saying that it is turned off, I haven't faced any issues. Sometimes, it says that windows defender is turned off. Please review the logs posted in my previous thread too.

Hello. I have a major PC problem...probably ought to shoot it! I have an HP pavilion 533w, running Windows XP, with 256 mb ram, 2.0 intel celeron processor, 60 gb hard drive. A few days ago, when I tried to boot the computer up in the morning, it would cut off after just a little while...the first day twice, then it worked ok. The next day it did that over and over, all day. I tried to do a recovery. It stayed on for the recovery, then while doing the "new" computer startup, it shut off again. I never could get it to finish the start up...now it just hangs on "please wait" on the xp splash screen, then cuts off. I tried changing out some of the parts (I had an old computer that I took parts off of). When I changed the hard drive, BINGO...the computer works with the new hard drive....so I guess I found out the problem. The old hard drive is 20 gb, and runs windows 98. The problem with that is, it won't recognize the cdrom, the video driver (only shows 16 colors), etc. I can't connect to the internet to see if I can download the drivers, because I have to use the cdrom to set up my cable modem. SOMEBODY, please advise me of what to do about this problem!!! If anybody has any suggestions on fixing the computer with the original hard drive, it would be TERRIFIC! If not, what can I do to fix the old one I replaced it with! I very much would appreciate your help! Thank you!

Answer:Computer cuts off every time it's turned on

Hello and Welcome to TSF

You can try a repair install. It may solve your problems if the hard drive is not on its way out.
You may want to check the integrity of the drive before proceeding. Run the hard drives manufactures Diagnostic Utility.
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

If the drive comes back with now errors proceed with the Repair
Follow these instructions.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...ps/doug92.mspx

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

If you have xp sp2 installed it needs to be incorporated into your xp disk or it will not offer the repair option only the clean install.

I am having this same problem with the same computer build and have followed all steps. it's still shutting down after a minute or two.

Answer:Re: Computer turns off on its own after little time of being turned on

Please do not Hijack someone else's thread. I have moved you to your own thread. The OP in the original thread had a laptop and not a build, so what works for them will not work for you.
As for your problem, Shutting down is usually caused by Power Supply Unit failing or overheating. Open the case and blow out all fans with a can of compressed air. Take a look at the PSU label (Desktop not Laptop) and report the make, model and Wattage. If it continues to shut down, then replace the PSU

My Dell Inspiron N4030 on Windows 7 64bits started crashing and shutting off completely on its own this morning. No blue screen, no error messages, just turns off. I tried starting in safe mode, and it still turns off after about a minute. I did the initialization repair process twice, no deal. I can`t even get to the "restore to original state" page, it shuts off before. I don't know what else to do, I'm desperate. I'd LOVE to save about 20 pictures about my family that I have and will not be able to retrieve from anywhere else, but I don't know how to keep the computer on for enough time to back them to a flashdrive. Pleeeease help me!!

Answer:Computer turns off on its own after little time of being turned on

Your documents are fine, so don't worry about that. You could always pull the hard drive and copy the files to another machine.

Can you try booting the PC and go into either the BIOS or the boot menu and leave it there to see if still powers off? BIOS is usually F2 and Boot Menu may be F11 or F12 when you first power on the system.

Just bought a Gateway MX6453. I have DSL at home, with a wireless modem. In order to get online, each time the laptop has been closed, I need to start Wireless Zero Configuration. Under properties, it is set for startup type=automatic.

Then I have to go to Open Network Connections, Properties, Wireless Networks, and check "use windows to configure my wireless settings". It is always unchecked when the computer is restarted.

How do I set this up so it really is automatic? On the old laptop, it connects automatically when the card is in and you turn the laptop on.

Tried one office yesterday that has a secure network, you need to type in a key each day. Even after going through all of the above, my laptop couldn't even see the network, although the laptop 2 feet away was online fine.

Is there some firewall or something resetting these settings? I thought I uninstalled all the McAffee stuff that came with the laptop, just using Windows firewall and AVGfree antivirus.

New laptop also has bluetooth, is that what is causing this issue?

Thanks!

Answer:New laptop, wireless needs to be turned on each time?

Probably your wireless adapter's utility is also running. Please see this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/networking/507204-solved-strange-wireless-network-problem.html

This ThinkPad worked fine prior to getting tucked away in a closet.  After 1.5 years the battery was as expected -- dead.  I recharged the computer and the Thinkpad holds the charge fine.  It will initiate the boot sequence, the blue screen comes up and it goes through bios check.  Then I get a black screen with a lock symbol...which I am guessing is in need of a password entry....the problem is I did not have a boot password set on this machine and never entered one prior to the battery going completely dead. Now I can not get the computer to finish booting and loading Windows 98 and hence giving me access to the hard drive.  I tried booting from the CD drive but that didn't work either. I have a 3.5" drive but no boot floppy  Is there a solution to my problem if I have no idea what password this machine thinks it needs?

Answer:A20m battery dead, recharged, holds charge, won't complete boot- get lock symbol after bios chk

Welcome to the forum! You're not going to like what I'm about to say...Tucking the machine away obviously drained the CMOS (BIOS) battery along with the main one. When this happens, if the Supervisor password was set in the past - likely before you even got the machine - you'll be prompted to enter it with the lock symbol that you've seen. There's no way around that maze, since password cracking techniques are not to be discussed on this forum.Replacement motherboard is the way out, or getting a new laptop altogether.Good luck.

Hello, I have a problem with my system. When I wake up in the morning and the computer has been off all night long I will get a bluescrean after like 5min or so... After that the OS reboot and same thing again untill I shut down the system and wait 1-5min then start it. The it will work just fine untill I shut it down again and have if turned off for a long time. Next morning I got the same issue....

? Windows 7
? x64
? No, it's a home-build system
? I got the OS from my MSDNAA...
? From 3 years to 3 months (the oldest thing is HDD the rest is new.)
? Last time I installed the os was like 3 weeks ago (it has been reinstalled alot)
? 930 i7 @ 2.8Ghz
? Gainward 460 1GB GLH

Don't know if it's diffrent all the time or if it's the same. Have only looked for it once...

Sorry for my bad english, hope it won't be a issue for any readers.

Edit: Might add that I have runned memtest on my memories and also send em back where I got them from but they diden't find anything.
Has also tried with 4 diffrent motherboards (same model) and 2 diffrent graphiccards (Not the same model).

Please help for the last month every time i turn on my laptop Satellite pro A120 with vista business pre-installed it configures which takes about an hour.

After it finally turns on it repairs itself and then when on the McAfee warns it needs updating.

I have tried installing updates, I have tried turning off the automatic updates, only thing i haven't tried is throwing it out of the bedroom window.

If you can help please keep your language simple as i don't have much technical knowledge.

Thanks in anticipation.

Answer:Satellite Pro A120 goes through configuration every time turned on

Can you explain how it 'repairs itself' ?

To rule out a software/Windows problem, you can reinstall Windows back to its factory state by running "Recovery".
But you need to backup your data (documents, music, emails, etc..) before running Recovery. It will wipe/delete C: Drive.

To run Recovery, hold down the Zero (0) Key when you power-on the laptop.

I have a fairly substantial library of pictures that I have built up over some years. These are either digital camera pix or scanned images, all of them having been through Photoshop and saved as JPEGS. I have recently discovered that without exception, they have all now turned into "Quick Time" pictures. Firstly, what are Quick Time pictures, secondly, why has this happened, and finally, how can I convert them back into JPEGS? I'm totally baffled!

Answer:JPEGS have turned into 'Quick Time' pictures!

Try right-clicking on one of the pics and then choose Open With ... and you should be able to open them with whatever program you normally use to view the pics - also set it as the default open program.

Hi. My computer was perfectly fine until this Wednesday morning when I turned on the computer chkdsk utility started. I thought it was the random check but when i turned on the computer again the next day (Thursday), chkdsk ran again and this morning (Friday) also. This is the first time that happened to my computer. I was trying to update Ad-aware but it is saying ERROR. I used ccleaner and when the cleaner was done a balloon popped up and it says "The file or directory C: is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility.

ccleaner.exe - Corrupt File"

Is there a problem in my computer? I'm just worried with the virus that's out right now. Hope to hear from anyone. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
I always have problem turning my desktop on specially if it was unplugged from the power source or the ups was turned off.
The desktop actually powers on but there is no display whatsoever. I have to restart it several times until it finally shows the display. I sometimes let it run without the display for 30 minutes before restarting. The display usually comes up when I let it warm up for 30 minutes.
But if I didn't unplug the pc or didnt turn off the ups, it usually powers on with display without any problem.
The longer the pc has been unplugged, the harder it is for me to turn it on.
Can somebody pls. tell me what I need to replace to fix this problem.

Answer:PC doesn't have display when turned on if it was unplugged for a long time

It's a guess, but I think that the phrase " Warm Up " may be relevant it sounds like somewhere there's a bad contact that is fixed for want of a better word when the metal heats up and expands. Pinning it down may be difficult, check that all cables are plugged in firmly and where applicable screwed in place. Then assuming the output is from a graphics card and not the MOBO make sure it's seated in the slot properly. If the graphics is from an onboard chip on the MOBO I'm not sure what to do to fix it, other than suggest fitting a dedicated graphics card.

Every time I reboot the computer, the action center tells me to turn the automatic updates on. I do that, and it turns off again. I've run malwarebyes and my virus scan and cleaned up anything it found, but that doesn't make any difference. I've also run the scannow, and it's not found any problems.

Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this? I don't want to turn the notification off.

Thanks!

Answer:Install updates automatically gets turned off every time I reboot

What other software is installed? this sound to me like you have a system 'optimiser' running at boot, such as Advanced System Care, or any Wise product.
All such product should be used with extreme caution - or preferably uninstalled completely.

Have a real stumper for the Windows 8.1 experts out there.
THE ISSUE:
Noticed shortly after upgrading the Asus VivoTab Smart to Windows 8.1 (from Windows 8) -- that sometimes the system's date and time will be incorrect after a shut-down, turn on cycle. Sometimes the clock is as fast as three hours, but others much longer. Interestingly, if you go into PC Settings > Time & Settings and then toggle off the "Set time automatically" option, and then toggle it back on, the time and date are immediately corrected. However, the time would again be wrong after a shutdown. If the tablet is restarted, though, the time is correct again.

THE SYSTEM:
Windows 8.1 (upgraded from Windows Store). Intel Atom processor.

WHAT'S BEEN TRIED:
Following the other advice and threads on this forum and Microsoft Answers, I:

1. Stopped the Windows Time service, registered it again and restated it. The issue remained. I entered the desktop and clicked on the time in the lower right-hand corner of the screen. From here I confirmed the time zone was correct and changed the date and time. That fixes the problem during the current session, but the time/date are again wrong on reboot.

2. Tried Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, the time is correct and stays correct.

3. Tried Clean Boot. In Clean Boot, with all non-Microsoft services disables, the issue returns and the time is wrong again.

THE BREAKTHROUGH THAT BEGS FOR AN ANSWER:

Maybe this fix will work for you, found it on the net.

4. By default my ?Server? that was selected was ?time.microsoft.gov?. I changed the server to ?time.nist.gov? which is an alternative Internet Time Service (ITS).

After I made this change my clock time showed correctly and continued to work upon restarting the computer. I am unsure if there is a short term issue with the Microsoft service, but that one seems to be configured on GMT rather than PST for my computer.
For those of you that experienced this same issue, I hope this helps you!

It always happens,After the wireless connection is turned off, I can not find any signal again. I have to restart the machine to find the signal. I have tried to remove the Acess Connection (The lenovo Tec support suggested), install a new edition of Acess Connection, update the wireless driver, but it still happens. Anyone who has the same problem before?BTW my OS is Win Vista Home Basic

Answer:HELP! The wireless connection of my new X61s is turned off automaticlly for some time

Try pressing Fn+F5, and then see if the wireless radio is turned off (which it sounds like it is), just turn it back on and wait a few seconds then see if it can find wireless networks again.

Why do the apps cortana and store use cpu and network time even though they are not used or are turned off? (Windows 10) In task manager I cleared app history, then even though every cortana setting I can get to is OFF, cortana is the largest cpu time user. store shows up 2nd and I have yet to use the Microsoft store.
This same question applies to other apps also: Twitter for example is listed as greatest network user in spite of me avoiding any and everything twitter related.
What controls how these things get to use resources? Any thoughts welcomed.

Answer:Why do Cortana & Store apps use CPU & Network time even when they are turned off?

I am guessing it is because even in the background they are carrying out some activities.
To completely and fully close Windows Store apps you have to drag it towards the bottom and hold it for a few seconds, till it flips to display its icon.

Hi, I have a T400 (purchased Nov. 2008, not on warranty anymore) whose screen stops working some time after the laptop is turned on. By "stops working", I mean the screen fades to a weird whitish color over a 30-60 second period. After restarting, it works fine again. I have an ATI GPU. So far it's only happened when I have my 1920x1200 external monitor connected via the DVI port on my mini dock, and the external monitor continues to work even after the laptop screen stops. There was one instance in which my external monitor had noise on it (it works fine with other computers, so it's not malfunctioning), but after disconnecting/reconnecting the DVI cable to the dock, it worked again. Someone told me that this is because there is a loose connection between the GPU and the motherboard, and as the laptop heats up, the GPU/motherboard expand and the connection comes loose. He said that I can use a blow dryer to reflow the connection. Since a new motherboard would cost ~$500, I am seriously considering this option. Anyone know what would be the best course of action? Thanks!

Never mind, it seems it was indeed my videocard dying, it happens all the time now or works for like 5 minutes before freezing or forcing a reboot (or the described problem). Either I got a bogus one (I have this one for barely a month), or the drivers caused the videocard to fry (read about this happening to some others). I'll see if I can find information about the warranty (but either way, a videocard should either not die so soon or get fried by the correct drivers). Now using my previous one, glad I still had it.

---

Today I had to replace the second HD multiple times as I had to transfer some files from multiple to this HD but there are only 2 HD slots. I always did this carefully, yet apparantly not careful enough, as the last time I replaced (and had to replace, fortunately) a HD, the PC's screen and keyboard and mouse didn't show any signs of life anymore. No num lock light (it briefly turned on when the PC was turned on, but for no more than 0,1 sec I'd say), no optical mouse light, screen stuck in standby mode with the screen's menu not working. Everything else (any lights in and out of the PC that should light up, including the light of my PC sound controller. PC made its regular sound as well) still worked, though.

I tried nearly everything: checked wether everything's connected properly, removed that HD, etcetera. Eventually, I tried disconnecting my videocard and see what it'd do. The same thing. I then reconnected my videocard an... Read more

since i know germanone will probably respond to this he might know the code better but anyways what i want to do is to make a batch on my flash drive ask me if i want to delete a pre-existing folder of my desktop and completly replace it or just copy the new files into it heres what i have so far

@echo off &setlocal

if exist "%userprofile%\Desktop\crossfire" rd /s /q "%userprofile%\Desktop\crossfire review and guide"

What does "%~d0" represent? The flash drive? If you are running this from the flash drive, you only need to specify the relative path, so "crossfire review and guide" is fine, if both are stored in the root directory.

Other than that, so far you check for one folder, but delete another. Why?

I think that the below code does what you want:

Code:

@echo off &setlocal

REM Prompt user for choice
set /p "answer=Do you want to copy? [y/n] "

REM if answer is not equal to "y" or "Y", go to "end of file" (END)
if /i "%answer%" neq "y" goto :eof

:choice
REM check for full rewrite, or just update
set /p "answer=Do you want to Rewrite all files, or just Update files? [r/u] "
if /i "%answer%" == "r" goto :rewrite
if /i "%answer%" == "u" goto :update
echo You have selected an invalid option.
goto :choice

:rewrite
REM remove existing directory and copy all files fresh from source
REM if "Desktop\crossfire" exists, remove "Desktop\crossfire review and guide" completely and quietly
if exist "%userprofile%\Desktop\crossfire review and guide" rd /s /q "%userprofile%\Desktop\crossfire review and... Read more

I owodified Y410p which started malfunctioning roughly about 2 months ago. First it took progressively longer time for Lenovo logo to show up. First 3 minutes, then 5, yesterday 15, and today 40 minutes have passed and the screen remains black. Once it gets to Lenovo, everything is okay. When the power button is pushed, everything starts bormally. Keyboard light on , fan on, the laptop deels warm, and even the CD unit can be opened and closed - but the screen won't immediately load.

Answer:Y410P screen stays black for a long time after turned on

(So hard to use the forums for smartphone **bleep**) Continuation of above: I have tried some simple solutions like power button 20 seconds or Shift-F8 and none works. Some say that Windows 10 might be the problem but I've installed mine for 2 yrars and no problem has arised about it. I hope someone could suggest me something before ai have to bring it to the service centre (if I must). Thanks.

Ive got a wireless router.
Into that router I have 2 normal LAN cables connected.
1.- LAN-cable goes to a printer
2.- LAN-cable goes to a stationary PC
In addition I have a laptop that connects "wirelessly" to the same router mentioned above.

Every time I turn the stationary PC or/and printer ON the laptop "looses" temporarily the connection to the internet.
So in short words the wireless connection interrupts each time a system connected by cable is turned ON.

The wireless interruption lasts some seconds, and then the laptop re-establishes the wireless connection automatically.
I'm wondering if it's possible to avoid these interruptions, cause their really annoying. Is this hardware related? Is there a setting that can to be changed in order fix this issue?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Wireless connection interrupts each time LAN-connected system is turned ON

Sounds like a faulty router to me. That is not normal behavior. If it has error logs you might want to review it/them.

I have a Windows 10 Pro, up-to-date now, full drivers, but it has an annoying problem. Each time I don't touch the computer (dont move mouse or type) after 2 minutes, the screen is turned off (yes, I set 2 minutes for automatically turning off the screen), but when the screen is turned off, the disk is loading a lot (I know by seeing the HDD LED on my laptop).

Through Task manager opened, I see the disk gets 100% disk usage (I open Task manager first, then wait for the screen turning off, then when it happened, I move the mouse and see). After about 10-20 seconds for the screen to turn on again, the disk backs to normal.

It doesn't happen when I turn off display by pressing Fn+F7 (my hotkey function to do that), but after about 2 minutes, it appears.
I hope to hear your advice to solve this problem. Thank you!

Answer:Windows 10 gets full disk usage every time the screen is turned off

Please post a screenshot of your task manager's Processes tab, organising any column of interest, high to low, by clicking on the appropriate tab showing when the high usage is happening.

You may be able to do this with PrtSc (and paste that into e.g. Paint) else take a photo and post that.

Similarly for the Performance, Disk tab, choosing the disk in question.

Repeat when you have used your mouse and activity is low.

To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon above your post to the left of the video icon. Thanks.

Hello, can anybody help me with this one?

This normally happens whilst internet browsing and may be related to the graphics card - i am not sure if it is the card itself or maybe browser features activex and the like or possibly malware.

The computer just crashes right down to restart.

A brief history of the PC over the last 6 months.

1. Graphics freeze and crash due to graphics driver - fixed with new x300 catalyst driver.
2. Computer fine until hit by virus - norton, mcafee unable to fix so reformat.
3. Internet explorer crashing due to activex controls? so downloaded mozilla.
4. Computer fine for a while but now complete crashdown whilst on interent.

The crash has no pattern (i.e not specific to flash animation, java, etc)

Anyways i have a hijack log here to see if it is related to some malware.

Answer:What is the time required to complete a Windows 10 installation?

That sounds too long. There was a bug in a recent update that could cause it to be stuck. I would reboot and see what happens. Leave it at least an hour if stuck on gears again. Otherwise you may have to use DRT to roll back to a working OS.

Question: Lock DOWN time...

have 40 to 50 systems running 2K prof. I'd like to lock them out from being able to surf the net. I figure it can be done several different ways. I'm new with this company, and am just now learning their enviroment.

There are 3 different locations. Each site, has it's own 2K small biz server running.

They have no group policies in effect as well.

Where would you begin, or what would be the easiest solution, all the while providing some scaleability?

Thanks for the help

In ?Windows Update? I have selected the recommended option of ?install updates automatically? and left the timing at the default of ?Every day at 3:AM.? I typically shut down my computer every night, so it is not running at 3AM. After my computer is turned on will I still get the Windows Update downloads? Will they install automatically at some point?
I am running Vista Home Premium 64bit on a Dell XPS 435MT.

Answer:Must computer be turned on at scheduled time for Windows Update to download updates?

Yes your computer needs to be turned on. If it's not, and you don't update manually, it will simply wait until you are powered on at 3am. And, if you are never powered on at 3am, you will never update.

My computer is to be having some problems booting when it has been asleep/hibernating/turned off. At first it seemed to be just when it had been asleep or hibernating, but recently it wont boot after being turned off for a short while (an hour or so).

What happens, is that after turning it on, I get a "No signal" message on my monitor, and nothing shows up on it. The computer turns on, it makes the usual noises, but no signal comes through to the monitor.

The only way I can seem to get it started after this is if I leave it unplugged for a while, usually at least an hour and a half or so, then it will either boot from scratch or resume Windows from sleep/hibernation.

I never have the problem turning it on at the beginning of the day when it's been off all night, so it's as if it needs to be off for a long while for some reason.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on an AMD A10-5800K and Gigabyte F2A85X-D3H, with 8GB RAM.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

Answer:Windows wont wake up from sleep, hibernation or turned off for a short time

Before going too deeply into this, if the light on the monitor is lit, try a different cable.

Answer:Completly Hijacked. I cant open IE and Macafee Real time scanning is turned off

Hello, and welcome to TSF.

I don't see a log from GMER rootkit scanner, was there a problem with that? If you've already run it and have the log, please attach it in reply.

Otherwise, I would like to get a scan in.

Let's try this version of gmer.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked IAT/EAT
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

If you still have troubles, try running the scan in Safe Mode.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

Answer:Complete Freeze Short Time After Turning On Computer

Supereuropa, hello and welcome to the forums. You had only 1 dump file. Please make sure your computer is configured for Small Memory Dumps. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5...dows-10-a.html

Also, Please go to your last post and in the bottom left corner click 'My System Specs'. there is a link there to update your system specs, click it and fill them all out in as much detail as possible. Please list Manufacturer and Model, and list Desktop or Laptop. If it is an OEM, please list the Manufacturer and Model number. Please be sure to list your PSU and CPU cooler. If you would like to know what we would like, please click 'My System Specs' at the bottom left of this post and see mine.

This is what your dump file says

I am trying to complete DISM on my Windows 8.1 installation to get it into tiptop shape before upgrading to Win 10.
But despite trying countless times I haven't succeeded.
My questions are:

How long is the sort of upper limit of waiting for DISM to complete? It's been at 40% all night.... Previous attempts from my USB stick and another person's CD have at least cut out after 1 hour or so and said that it can't find the files (even though the file it wants is in the source!). Any info that anyone has on this would be helpful.

Does the source need to be from the exact same CD that Windows was installed from, or something like that? Or is it ok to simply use another Windows Pro disc. I would have thought it was the same?

Answer:Time to complete DISM and matching installation source

I am trying to complete DISM on my Windows 8.1 installation to get it into tiptop shape before upgrading to Win 10.

Windows 10 is going to DUMP / TRASH the complete windows 8.1 OS anyway.... So a rather useless endeavor

in the arse? I tried to plug in a USB flash drive. XP found it and off I went. With Vista, I'm screwing around for the past 20 minutes because it can't find the driver? What driver? It's PlugNPlay right?

Answer:Besides being a complete waste of time and money, why is Vista such a pain

Well, that's Microsoft and a new OS, right? Remember what a nightmare XP was when it first came out? and then all the problems with service pack 2?

Is there any way to keep the lock screen from shutting me down if I don't do anything on the keyboard for a minute or 2 minutes, or whatever it is? I followed some instructions that I found on the internet that involve adding ".bak" or ".backup" to the lock screen file in "SystemApps" but it didn't have any effect. Then I clicked on "Settings" in the Start menu and got totally lost in all that stuff.

Hello, I like seeing AM/PM on any time value. I already know if it's AM or PM, but it looks more Proper to see the AM or the PM with whatever time it is.

What Registry modification/Program can help me achieve this?

Thanks

Answer:AM/PM For The Time At The Lock Screen

You can change the time format, how time is shown on Windows notification area freely but AM / PM is regardless of your settings never shown in Windows Clock and lock screen if 24 hour clock has been selected.

To change how time is shown on Windows desktop, select Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Region, click Additional settings:

Now change time formats manually typing any of the following values for short time. Add :ss for long time for seconds:

h:mm
12 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

h:mm tt
12 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

hh:mm
12 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

hh:mm tt
12 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

H:mm
24 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

H:mm tt
24 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

HH:mm
24 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

HH:mm tt
24 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

Here I have selected 24 hour clock with AM / PM, but it's only shown in notification area. Opening clock does not show AM / PM, nor does lock screen, whatever settings I have chosen as long as I am using 24 hour clock:

Using 12 hour clock AM / PM is always shown in Clock and lock screen if selected.

That is a setting in the screen saver properties. You can set time and require a password.

Hello, I used to use a reg file for Windows 8.1 to customize the time until the screen turns off during the Lock Screen Time Out. I want to know if that command still applies for Windows 10.

The reg file command is:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen]
"SlideshowDuration"=dword:000493e0
(where the screen turns off after 5 minutes).

I have the formula to figure out what you need to calculate to insert after "dword" for the amount of time until the screen times out (goes black). Ask me for the formula... as long as the above works.

Thanks

Answer:Lock Screen Slideshow Time Out

Never mind. I went into the Registry and checked it out.

Yes, the same exact rules apply here like in Windows 8.1

I have a similar problem with Outlook 365, but it only happens when I try to respond or create an email. Most times I just have to close outlook and restart it and do not do anything except to create that email otherwise it will freeze up again, and become non-responsive.Any suggestions?I have done the uninstall and reinstall a couple of times, actually had Office 365 tech do it remotely, it works for a day or 2 and then starts acting up again.message edited by gbkane40

"I have a similar problem with Outlook 365"Similar problem to what or who? Best bet is to spell out your own problem exactly because it is yours that wants fixing, not something similar.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Well, I'm not very good at time management so I need a program that can lock me out of my computer for a specified amount of time, that way I don't get distracted and turn my computer on again. (Is there a way this is possible?) Please help!!!

Answer:Please help, I need a software that can lock me out of my computer for specified time

Re: Please help, I need a software that can lock me out of my computer for specified

this sounds like a horrible prank to play on a sibling/friend :/ but uhh im not sure thier is such a program, i mean it sounds very ..... dangerous potentialy if someone needed comp access sudenly for something ultimately etc on top of other issues.... you will need to go outside to do your homework etc perhaps... or find a way to keep your comp busy, maye if you used your comp for seti or dna or water or whatever they are doing with spare pc power while you do your work, pehraps play music from a net station while doing your homework as well from the pc that way its being used produtively and you get to focus on your work etc ?
just a possibilty
