Computer screen stays blank

Question: Computer screen stays blank

I recently bought a used computer from my work (a gateway). I'm sure they remove a lot of stuff before reselling them. When I hooked it up, it makes the music likes it's coming on, but the computer screen stays blank. It's like it's putting itself in sleep mode or something. I can't get to the control panel or anything. Does anyone know what is causing this? My place of business sold several of these, and I haven't heard of anyone else experiencing problems. Is it possible I need to run some kind of disc if they removed something vital? Thanks for any help.

Preferred Solution: Computer screen stays blank

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was browsing the web when suddenly my pc froze. There were some discolored pixels and few weird lines. Then the os crashed.
After it crashed I tried restating but the screen just stayed blank.
I noticed that cpu fan seems to be spinning slower than usual.

I tested the monitor and psu on my other pc, both checks out. I tried with my old gpu and still no luck.

Not sure what to do next.

I recently moved my computer from 1 room to another and after i set it up and turned it on, a few seconds later it sounded like it turned off then on again then off again and on again. All this time the monitor stays blank and I've tried to plug the monitor into both the onboard graphics and the nvidia graphics card. Any help on the case would be greatly appreciated.

Question: Screen Stays Blank

I recieved 1024MBs of DDR2 ram I ordered from Tigerdirect today. I unplugged everything from my computer and opened it up. My computer was running on 2 sticks of 256mb and 1 stick of 512mb DDR ram. When i took them out i saw this but figured I would try a 512mb DDR2 stick and see if I could at least use that before my new motherboard arrived. I removed all the DDR ram I had and put in 1 stick of 512mb DDR2 ram. i plugged the computer back to everything and tried to boot it up. The monitor remained black.

I unplugged everything from the computer again and removed the DDR ram. I put the old ram back in and tried to boot with the computer just connected to the monitor. Both the computer and the monitor have power and both have lights turning on. When I try to boot the computer the screen remains blank still, even with the old ram in the computer.

At this point i thought one of the ram sticks might be bad so I took 2 sticks out and tried to boot. No change. I put a different stick in and took the first stick of ram out and tried booting. Nothing on the screen. I tried the last stick and nothing changed. I've tried the last stick of ram in all 3 ram slots my MB has and nothing shows up on screen.

The monitor worked fine when i plugged it into another computer.

When i start my computer everything sounds normal. The fan runs, the hard drive is working but nothing comes up on screen. I know the monitor is working but I cannot get it to work with my computer for some reas... Read more

Answer:Screen Stays Blank

What are the specs of your Motherboard? Are you sure your motherboard supports DDR2? If your motherboard doesnt support DDR2 Memory you probably just killed your ram slots.

I have had a recurring problem for months on my HP desktop. Often when I walk away from my computer (and occasionally while i'm sitting there using the darn thing!), I'll come back a while later and my monitor will have gone black and does not come back when I move my mouse or anything else i've tried. I end up having to shut down using the button on my CPU in order to restart and get my screen image back. Is this a Vista problem, a hardware (video card?) problem or an old-duffer-with-his-head-where-the-sun-don't-shine problem? Is there an easy way to prevent this and/or an easy way to get my screen image back without shutting down the whole kit and kaboodle? thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:Screen goes/stays blank

I think this is Vista, though it may just be for laptops. Anyway try looking at "Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\Change when the compuer sleeps." Incidentally will a wake up button on your keyboard do anything in this situation?

Answer:Laptop screen stays blank

check power saving settings - right click on an empty section of the screen and look in screen saver. Some laptops have an auto feature that when on batteries they shut down half the power to the screen and it makes them virtually black and appears to be off.

When I boot-up my computer, it takes about 2 seconds longer for the monitor to turn on then usual, and right before the log-in screen the display will disappear, and stay off. The PC continues working normally, as far as I can tell.

What precluded this issue? Why, I haven't the foggiest. Windows update isn't set to automatic, and I hadn't updated any programs/software etc. in two weeks.

Timeline of Events
3.24, morning: PC booted up fine.
3.24, evening: 6 hour car ride with PC in box, cushioned by clothing, buckled in.
3.24, later in evening: Upon boot-up, issue was first discovered

Here's what I've been doing to try to rectify the issue;
-Did a clean install of the newest graphics driver, twiceBoth times, upon restart after installation, PC booted up normally, but I got constant 'The display driver has stopped responding and recovered' notifications.
As well, upon shutting down the computer, the next time it booted the original issue returned, and I had to boot into safe mode to use it.

-Restore the system to it's 3-21 statusWhen viewing the prompt to let me do this, I was there had been no changes between that restore point and present day. The system restore was unsuccessful.
-Tested the original cables with an older CRT monitorSame result, the monitor blanked before the log-in screen.

-Updated and ran malwarebytes and MSEThey didn't find any issues

-Went into msconfig, disabled all startup processes, and restarted the PCAgain, monitor went blank before ... Read more

When did this problem start? Did you do any updates or install any new hardware or software?

Is this the built in graphics or is it a graphics card? If so the type of graphics card installed?

the pc boots but the power light doesn't come on and nor does the screen ive had this problem before because i installed two incompatible ram sticks, however there is only the original ram stick signal is being recieved by the monitor but doesn't show the NO SIGNAL message and it acts as though the pc is turned off.

Answer:pc boots but screen stays blank

The monitor is either not turn onor you have lost the connection[bent pin?]The non Signal is generated in the monitor when it does not get a signal - so no 'No Signal' suggests the monitor is powered off.

I have my system setup to to turn off my monitors after an hour. I also have it set to ask for a password when it's time to log back in. When I move the mouse or touch the keyboard the screens come on and ask for a password. Once I enter my password; the password screen goes away and the screens stay blank. This happens about 8 out of 10 times. It doesn't happen on boot, only after the system has been runiingAnyone know whats going on? My guess would be a video driver issue. Please advise.

IE 6 screen will show, and the globe icon spins in the corner, but nothing will load. I can leave it like this for 10 minutes (the longest I have tried) and I do not even get an error message. I use Verizon DSL, and msn works fine. I also loaded Firefox 2.0 and it works just fine. Since it does, I would just ignore the disfuctional IE, except that several programs are internally set to connect through IE and they are locked out by this problem. I am run Windows 2000. Any suggestions would be appreciated if you have run across this issue.

Computer seems to be on, but the laptop screen stays blank.

Ok so right now the power light is on and HD and the back fan is not on, and when I press the power button, the HD and the back fan comes on and then the power light just flashes, but nothing is on the screen, and the the keyboard lights (capslock/numlock etc) do not flash like they would on a boot up. That leads me to assume that the laptop is hibernating or something, but it should come out of hibernation (if it was) on a press on the power button, but nothing happens when I do that.

also connected an external monitor to the back of the laptop, got nothing on the screen as well.

any ideas?

Answer:Satellite Pro P100 - Screen stays blank

Hm, it could be a mainboard issue or something else. I doubt that it?s a problem of the internal display because tested an external display and there you can notice the same issue.

What you can do is this following workaround: Remove the battery and AC/DC adaptor and then wait one hour. Connect the AC/DC adaptor and battery again. Now you can try to start the notebook again.

If it doesn?t work I would ask a notebook technician from an authorized service provider. Maybe it?s a hardware malfunction and the ASP can test your notebook.

You may please try connecting it to external display, tapping F2 to enter bios
Load set up defaults, save and restart
You may also try using Fn + F7 button to toggle display

I mainly use an external screen, the LCD is rarely turned on.Today I turned it on and just found out that it stays blank, no matter what I do.Unplugged it, turned it back on, nothing except one time, the desktop was visible for like 1 second. A year ago, I forgotten my password and had it completely 'secured' so TPM, fingerprint at boot, plus warranty was gone.So I did the procedure which consists of opening the laptop, dumping the chip to reveal that **bleep** password and putting it all back, incl. thermal paste ... needless to say this was a tough job but it was that or a wonderful doorstop :-))) (temperatures are mostly the same as before the operation) ThinkPad T61p (6460-D8G)T9300(2.5GHz), 2GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm HD, 15.4in 1920x1200 LCD, 256MB nVIDIA Quadro FX 570M, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ether, UltraNav, Sec Chip, FPR, Turbo Mem, 6c Li-Ion, WinVista Ultimate 32 (this is the original config however, I added an HDD and 2Gb of memory) I have Win7 64 with latest drivers So is my GPU dying ? After shutting it down normally last night, when I turned it on today the display stays blank. I hooked it up to external montior and that works fine, I checked in device manager and theres no conflicts showing up. The screen isnt black, its like the backlight is working it more grey once the comp is turned on. Also when I try to change the resolution using the external monitor the screen flickers like its trying to change but it always goes back to grey.

Any ideas? Laptop is only 18 months old with minimal usage.

Answer:Satellite L500 - Screen stays blank

Hi Outkast_IRE,

> I hooked it up to external montior and that works fine
This was very good that you have done this because so you have checked if the problem is related to internal monitor or graphic card.

Now it?s something with internal monitor and it could be the cable, LCD panel itself or something else. More exact diagnostic is not possible and can only be done from an authorized service provider so you should get in contact with the notebook technicians.

On Toshiba website there is a list with all ASPs. Give them a call or write an email and they will tell you what to do now.

I have a HP ZE1210 notebook which is about 3 years old now. I replaced the motherboard and cpu.

Before replacement, the computer would not charge a battery, and when the power button was pressed, it would turn on for about 1 second, then immediately shut off.

When I first booted up the laptop after replacing the parts, it booted fine and started to load XP Pro. The computer froze on the "Loading Windows XP" part of boot, and I had to restart it.

Now, when I turn on the laptop, the CPU fan comes on, the hard drive indicator blinks, and the power stays on, but the CPU fan stops within 5 seconds, and the screen never turns on. Also, the hard drive access indicator does not light again after the first 2 seconds. It appears to do absolutely nothing, but stays on. The battery charges fine, and all the regular indicator lights seem to be working.

I am wondering what the problem may be, since the first time I booted with the new parts it seemed to work?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

So my Qosmio X770 turns on but the screen stays blank, it was randomly turning on every so often but now it just stays blank.

The hd is working fine still, I've tried plugging it into a TV to see if it works but no signal is found. I've been told by a friend that it could be a problem with the graphics card, I'm wondering if it can be simply swapped if I buy a new one or is it integrated and I would have to replace the whole motherboard?

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Qosmio X770 turns on but screen stays blank

Even if the HDD would be faulty, the notebook should power ON and you should see the Toshiba splash screen on the internal display.
So its definitely NOT HDD problem.

You said you have connected the notebook to the TV. Can you see the Toshiba splash screen on the external monitor (TV)? Are you able to access the BIOS pressing F2?

If not, there is definitely an hardware problem.
It could be an fault of memory modules, graphic card or even motherboard malfunction might be possible.

In case of GPU or motherboard problems, the whole motherboard has to be replaced and this is expensive fix since mobo is most expensive notebook part.

When i try to turn on my laptop it powers on but the screen stays blank

Answer:When i turn on Satellite L350D-131 the screen stays blank

I read a lot about similar notebook symptoms and in most cases the users were abele to solve this by following this short and simply workaround;

- disconnect AC adaptor, remove battery
- leave the notebook disconnected for a longer period of time (wait 3-4 hours)
- then connect both parts and power up the unit.

I think this should help if there is no serious hardware problem?

Without any complaints toward how my laptop has been performing lately, I closed it today (something I don't usually do) and it went to sleep I assume. I came back later and the screen was blank. I held the power button to turn it off and tried restarting. The quickbar lights did their usual routine of cascading blue lights, but the screen remained unchanged, as in 'off'. Start up is accompanied by the usual humming of I guess the hard drive, but after a couple seconds the humming gets much quieter and remains at that low level. All the while nothing happens on screen.

Anyway, any suggestions? I looked around the internet briefly but could not find any solutions that seemed to be applicable to me. Maybe the laptop monitor somehow became disconnected?

Also, I'm not sure whether this is the correct sub-forum, the laptop was purchased with Vista x32 and I eventually upgraded to w7 x64

Answer:Satellite C660/C6600 stays on a blank black screen

>My Satellite C660/C6600 is unable to load up and once it is turned on it goes directly to a blank black screen after the Toshiba screen.

Does this means that you can see the Toshiba Splash screen at the beginning at then the display becomes blank?
Can you see something on the external monitor? If you didn?t test this, please do that?

I don?t think that display is affected, since you can see the Toshiba splash screen?
Not sure about the GPU issue but I think if GPU would be affected, then the Toshiba splash screen would not be visible too. In your case it is?

Well, try also this workaround:
- Remove AC adaptor and battery
- Press power button 30 sec long
- Connect both parts and try to power up the unit.

You could also check if one of the memory modules might cause this?
In such case you need to remove one module and should test the notebook using one module in each slot?

Answer:Satellite P500 - Screen stays blank after BIOS update 2.90

And on external monitor can you see a picture or not?

In my opinion something goes wrong during BIOS update and so the whole computer doesn?t start anymore. All updates are pretested by Toshiba so I doubt that only the screen isn?t working anymore.

You should try to remove the battery and disconnect AC/DC adapter for one hour. Then install battery and connect AC/DC adapter. Make sure the battery is fully charged and then try to start your notebook.

This issue has been driving me nuts and I was wondering if anyone has been able to resolve this successfully.
The laptop is not docked (at home) but connected to AC power. I close the lid and reopen the lid after a few minutes. But the screen has gone blank and the laptop does not respond to any keystrokes. So I pretty much have to resort to rebooting. Note that this does not happen always but happens once every 3-4 times.
I have searched the internet and tried everything - disable Intel display drivers, disabling hibernate, enabling "Do nothing", "Do not sleep", etc. from Power Options, Updated BIOS, drivers,  - but nothing seems to help.
My old Lenovo running Windows 10 never had this issue. So I am not sure if this has anything to do with Windows 10 or something specific to Dell.
Appreciate any pointers!

I have a Libretto 50ct and it won't start anymore. I hear the harddisk, but the screen stays blank. But if I push the powerbutton in combination with F12, then it comes in the Flash mode. And if I push the BIOS disk in, then it reads and the notebook doesn't respond anymore. I can only acces that part of the notebook... Nothing else.

I've tried the startup disk in that flash mode, but that doesn't work. And I can't come in the BIOS setup. The F1, ESC, space and the other important keys doesn't help neither.

Does the computer have a reset jumper or something on the mainboard?

Any help is welcome! Thank you!

Answer:Libretto 50ct doesn't start anymore - screen stays blank

First of all it would be very nice to know what you have done on the Libretto.
Did you try to update the BIOS before the issue has happened?

It sounds like BIOS update procedure goes wrong and now the notebook doesn?t work properly.
Did you check the BIOS update document before starting the procedure?
You should known that the wrong BOS or/and wrong BIOS upgrade procedure can damage the motherboard. In such cases there is no much to do and the service partner in your country should be contacted.

Whenever my laptop wakes up from sleep and shows the lock screen, I click and type in my PIN as normal. But on the lock screen at the top right, there's a Cortana box usually giving an example of what I can do, like 'tap and say remind me to water the plants when I get home'.

The problem is this box stays on the screen after the computer is unlocked, and displays semi-transparently in the top left over all other windows, with the only way to remove it is to double click, have a Cortana window display full screen and then close it.

I'd like to find a way of either fixing this or disabling Cortana from the lock screen altogether as I never use this feature. Any tips would be appreciated.

I have an Asus Eee PC that I got last year for my birthday. It has Windows 7 as the operating system. When I turn to computer on it seems to be working normal. When it comes time to log into a user profile and I click on the administrator profile (which is the one I use) and type in the password. The computer logs onto the profile but the screen stays completely black. I can still hear the computer running but the screen doesn't change. This has happened before but the toolbar was always visible at the bottom of the screen and now it's not. The only thing I can do with the screen black is type in Ctrl Alt and Delete to get the menu. Nothing on the menu seems to be helping with the issue.
I decided that I better see if the same thing was happening with my guest profile too. When I logged into my guest profile everything is working fine and that's what I'm on right now. However, the administrator profile has all my documents that I need for school and work so factory resetting or the possibly of wiping the computer isn't really an option.
Thank you for your time.

I got a new graphics card today (GTS 450) and I slotted it in, when I start it up the screen stays black, however, if I leave it for 20 seconds or so I can hear the windows start up sound.. I know my screen isnt gone because I've connected it to my laptop and it works fine. I have the Blue and White cable plugged in my monitor and my computer and still nothing, thanks.

Answer:Computer screen stays black

Do you get any signs of "life" (like the BIOS Info screen etc)
If so it's probably a driver issue (did you remove the old drivers before the switch) ?

If not, there are IMHO only 5 possibilities:
#1 The card wasn't seated properly -- reseat it
#2 The card draws more power than your PSU can handle -- get a better PSU
#3 you forgot to connect the extra power cable --connect it
#4 you bend one or more pins in the video cable -- replace
#5 The card is defective -- RMA

When I go to turn my computer on it can't get to the windows loading screen it just stops on a blank black screen. I have/will upload a video of it happening to illustrate what is happening since I might not have described it well.

I can't post videos due to my post count but if you want to see it just PM me.

The last thing I remember my computer doing before it turned off was a virus scan then a few minutes later a blue screen with some white writing coming up so I rebooted and this happened. I have tried using my Windows CD to repair it but it hasn't worked. I can't get into safe-mode because it just stops on the black screen with white writing (Sorry for all these un-techincal names xD).

I was wondering if anyone knew what was happening? Ideally i'm looking for a fix for this so I can back-up some of my files onto an external harddrive then I want to reformat.

Thanks, Ash

What happens is the screen goes black and I get a "no signal" for a split second then it just goes back to black. When this happens the fan gets loud. The computer doesn't turn off or anything, it just stays loud with a black display.
When it happens, I turn it off and turn it back on and it'll work for a while.

This happened about 3 times

1st time: Looking at steam sales
2nd time: Looking at steam sales (15 min after the 1st time)

then a 3rd time about an hour later after watching some videos (without steam opened because up to this point it only happened with it opened so i didn't open it). this time I had a video opened while I opened a game and it happened instantly as I double clicked the game.

I turned it back on and opened the game to test it, and it didn't happen like it did before.

The temperatures seem to be nowhere near high.
I'm assuming it's a video card problem?

Could it be anything else?

Answer:Screen blacks out randomly but computer stays on

I would certainly start with the video card. Check to see if it is working properly. You could check for updates for your driver and there is a possibility that it just may need replaced but start there and remember to write back as to what happened.

Got the computer from a family member, I tried fixing it for them first and I thought it was the video card so I tried a different one and still nothing. So it was unplugged and stored for months then they just gave it to me. Well I took it home and started messing with it turned it on a cple of times nothing. Moved wires around put different psu in nothing, put it back to normal it started right up powered screen up I got into windows but it had a lot of lag so I went to restart it so I could do a fresh install and screen shut off... note when it wasn't working before this point the cpu fan ran at full rpm when turned on but slowed down when it worked this first time. I turned it on and off cple times nothing unplugged psuand back in it worked enough to reinstall windows and went to restart nothing. When plugged my speakers in to see if it beeps it started up! Its toying with me, restarted it again nothing so next try I pushed on the cpu thinking the mobo was bad it started up and woked for a cple restarts and quit... I tightened. The mobo screws down to the case and worked for awhile and then started acting up on restart. It will turn on once after it sits awhile unplugged with the bios battery out. I'm confused... bad bios or the mobo? I have unplugged all things that aren't needed for start up different hd with same effect. Only thing I haven't tried yet is the ram. I'm at work and will mess with it more later. Its a compaq presario or w.e amd 3800+ 2.4 ght proc two 512m... Read more

Answer:computer turns on but screen stays black

The PSU was probably bad, replacing it should have fixed it. There may be bad caps on the motherboard or something is grounding on the MOBO to the case and causing it to not boot. Take everything apart. Take Heat Sync off of processor and apply Thermal Paste. Take MOBO out of case and check to see if there are any burn marks, bad caps, or if there are any risers missing off the case keeping the MOBO from touching the case.

If I let the computer sit unused, the screen goes black, as most monitors would; however, the screen stays dark when I move the mouse or hit buttons or something. Similarly, if I close the lid of my laptop when its turned on, and then open the lid, the screen stays black. Not only that, but when I closed the lid of the laptop, the computer never turned off. It was still running.

I reset the power options to default as well, so there is nothing wrong there.

Perhaps I should also mention that the screen successfully turns off and on in safe mode? The computer, however, does remain on instead of going into hibernation.

I had another problem where safe mode worked but a normal boot did not, just yesterday. and the people on techguy helped me then too; I'm not sure if it's related, but here is the link to that solved thread:

I've been having this problem for a couple of weeks now. When I turn on my computer it loads up to the black screen with the windows logo and the loading bar with the scroll across green thing. It will just stay on that screen until i turn it off. If i turn it off and turn it on again it will bring me to the screen that allows you to choose safe mode and other options. It will load on safe mode but if i try to turn it on again without safe mode it gets stuck on the screen. So I do a system restore and choose a few days back and the system restores and i can startup my computer just fine. However everytime i shutdown my computer it has the same problem of not getting past that screen. What can i do?? Thanks for your help.

Answer:During Startup Computer Stays On Windows Loading Screen

Hi and welcome to Bleepingcomputer.
Try running chkdsk while in Safe Mode.
Go Start > Run and type CHKDSK /F /R
you might need to reboot. If that doesn't work go to My Computer, Right click on C drive, Find the tools tab and click it then click check now.

I am attempting to remove a virus from a friend's toshiba a505-s69803 laptop.. in the transportation process i spilt a bit of water on the laptop but i do not think it effected the computer, because i was able to use the computer for days afterwards.. while trying to remove the virus in safe mode the computer would not let me run any anti-malware programs, and then subsequently shut down... now, when i try to start up the computer the keyboard lights turn on and the disc drives and fans begin working, but the screen remains blank... there are no signal beeps to indicate a hardware malfunction, and the three of the five lights on the front of the laptop (3 on the left side) are on... ive tried all the troubleshooting techniques on the forums, i.e. removing the battery and running on ac power, and vice versa, holding down the power button for 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, and 2 mins, all to no avail.. another computer savvy friend of mine said that some of these new viruses are smart enough to write itself to the bios which would prevent the computer from starting up... he recommended flashing the bios, but i do not know how to do so on a black screen, or if it might have been the water damage that may be causing a hardware problem (im thinking motherboad or video card if so)... any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

Answer:Laptop will start up but screen stays black, not a computer amateur but need help!

These new viruses are truly evil... and wide spread. We have had over 30 cases since Wednesday... all doing what you describe.

But the Toshiba is also infamous for having the screen inverter go bad... cheap to replace but darn difficult to get at quickly.

Can you connect an external monitor to the VGA port on the back of the Toshiba to see what you get there?

Answer:Monitor displays a white screen when starting my computer and it stays that way

Does the computer seem like there is any activity at boot...Hard drive activity etc? Might be a blown video card if the system seems like it is booting up and all you see if white screen with no splash screen that says the manufacturers name like HP etc. If this system doesnt have a video card if it is integrated, you can install a video card and see if you get different results.

So i just bought a new Gigabyte GTX 770, had a 650 before and everything worked. I have the Gigabyte GA-970a-ud3 mainboard with 2 PCI-E Slots, both 16x but one runs with 4x. If i put the graphics card in the top slot (16x) LEDs light up and fans start running , i hear the windows 7 welcome screen sound through the speakers but the screen stays black, but if i put the card in the bottom slot (4x) everything works, besides the fact that the graphics card is slow as hell.
Both PCI power cables plugged into it, i tried removing all drivers, resetting cmos.
I dont know what could possibly be wrong but maybe you do, so thanks in advance

Been having a few issues with my Flex 3 that I got 3 days ago. On Friday night, I got an automatic Windows update (that I accidentally interrupted and had to restart), which did not complete until the next morning. Even though it said it completed, when I checked the update settings it said "There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:" However, the computer has been running stable since and it hasn't asked to update again. Another problem (which I'm not sure if the botched update described above influenced) is that while the computer worked fine all Saturday, today it started doing something weird. Occasionally, the screen goes black (backlight is still on) and the internals seem to shut off while I'm using the computer, as the hard drive stops whirring and the computer itself seems to go to sleep. However, the power button nor the keyboard can seem to wake it up and I end up having to do a hard reset to power it back on. Oddly, the power and battery lights are still on and I can still switch on the keyboard backlight. This happens even when the battery is above 50% full. I have it on the charger now and it doesn't do it, but it seems to happen when the computer is unplugged. Help please?

It had sat unconnected for about a year, now we've set it up and I downloaded Outpost firewall, CW Shredder, CCleaner, A-squared, Spybot, AdAware, and Super Anti Spyware Professional trial version. It all ready had AVG free in it. Ran all the scans, cleaned it right out, and now when I click on a link on a web page or e-mail that opens a new window, the new window remains blank, it just says at the top "internet explorer provided by (my internet provider)", it's not making the connection to the web site I try to go to. However if I type in an address the new window goes to it no problem. This was working properly (but very slowly) prior to running all the scans. Can anyone help?
Thank you!

Answer:New window opens but stays blank
Try this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ It's a little program called IEfix and it will repair Internet Explorer by reloading the original files. You'll need the Windows XP CD. When you run the program, it'll come up saying that it cannot find a file. When that happens, point it to the 'I386' folder on the CD. It will run fine from there. If this doesn't work, post back, and we'll go to step 2.

My Sylvania monitor all of a sudden won't come on. If I turn it on it is very dim and stays of for 2 seconds. I can turn it off and then turn it on, same thing happens.
Is what happens when monitor goes bad?

Answer:monitor stays on for 2 seconds and goes blank

There are a thousand or so components in the average monitor, so there is no defined list of "what happens when a monitor goes bad".

Depending on exactly what fails, the outcome will entirely depend on the nature of the failure.

So the answer can only be "it could be".

But knowing it is a "Sylvania monitor" does not convey anything about the type or age of monitor. We do not know if it is a CRT or an LCD monitor as an example, the possibilities therefore differ again.

I am going to preface this by saying that this has *nothing* to do with restoring from sleep or hibernate modes. In searching for an answer to this issue, I found way too much related to that.

My problem is simple. Occasionally (~50% of the time) when I turn the monitor back on after shutting it off, it will stay blank and not really turn back on. It makes no difference how long the monitor has been off. After turning it back on, the power light is green, indicating there is a signal, but the screen is black. Again, the computer has not slept or hibernated. I simply shut off the monitor and later come back to turn it on. The same thing will happen occasionally if Windows shuts the monitor off after the configured time. (I did that last part as a test; I typically do not automatically shut it off.)

OS: Windows 7 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i7 860
MB: Asus P7P55D
Memory: 8GB - Corsair CMX6GX3M2A1600C9 (2 x 2 x 2GB)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
Monitor: Chimei CMV 221D
NVIDIA Drivers: (11/20/2009)

I originally thought it was the OS that was hung. However, I was able to go into the start menu and restart ("Start" -> "Right" -> "Right" -> "R"), so I know the OS was there responding to my commands.

Attempts to fix:
- Restart the computer. This worked.
- Shut off the power to the monitor and turn it back on. This works most of the time.
- Lock and unlock Windows. This works after a few tries.
- Hit C... Read more

Answer:Monitor stays blank when turning it back on

Hello, Welcome!
Your problem seems unrelated to Windows 7. Sounds to me like it is a monitor issue, not a driver or software issue. Do you have any other monitors you could try?

I unplugged everything on my computer to check out the inside. Then when I put everything back, the monitor got messed up. So here's what happens:

I turn on my computer and I hear the fan and everything working inside, but the monitor stays blank. I unplugged the monitor cord from the computer and "No signal" showed up on the screen and when I put it back it disappeared, but stayed black. I waited 30 min and nothing changed. I pressed Alt+f4 on the keyboard then Enter to see if it was working and sure enough it shut down. It seems like everything is working, but it doesn't show up on the monitor. I'm afraid I messed something up when I oped the case, but I didn't really do anything. The next thing I'm going to do is pug a different monitor into my computer or my monitor into a different computer. Any help would be great. Thanks

I have a Gateway GM5664 with windows vista premium. I'm not sure of any service packs. Lately my monitors have been blinking on and off four or five times and then they stay off and the fan starts running really fast. The only way I've been able to stop this is to press and hold the power button then restart the computer. No error message is shown. I have not had any recent crashes and have not installed any new software. Sometimes my computer will be fine all day and sometimes this happens after only a couple of minutes. I have scanned with an updated version of AVG and Spybot. Neither program found anything. Does anybody have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated and let me know if more information is needed. Thanks - Brian

I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 after using RC 64 since this summer. Everything is working well, except instead of turning off when entering power saving mode, my monitor goes blank but stays backlit and the power light remains on. When the computer does then eventually enter full sleep mode, the monitor does turn off. Obviously not the end of the world, but an annoyance. Any ideas? My video card is the 5850 with the catalyst 10.1 drivers

I think the answer is that Win7 is checking or building your Hybernation file before it goes to sleep and the monitor/video card must think it is still running which it is.
When the Hybernation file is checked or whatever it dos itfinally goes to sleep.

Did I make any sense?
I personally turned my Hybernation mode off on my desktop. In my case it is just a waste of time and space.

Let me know what you think?

I have turned mine totally off which speeded up my computer especially when I shut it down. I still can put it to sleep without an issue.
Here is the DOS command to turn it off.

Access CMD prompt using Run as Admin
powercfg -h off
Just cut and paste what I wrote above with the spaces

To turn it back on powercfg -h on

I was watching a movie and my computer froze. It's a Toshiba Satellite a135 that's about 3 years old. It wouldn't let me restart, so I force shut down with power button. When I tried restarting it, it did it's initial powering up, but the monitored stayed blank. I've tried leaving it on (because it does not shut down) to see if anything changes, but does not. I've unplugged the power cord and waited a few minutes, as with removing the battery and nothing changes. I've also tried inserting the system recovery disks while holding down the "c" key, like it's instructed and nothing happens. It does recognize that a disk is in, however. The power light stays on and doesn't even go into standby when left alone for awhile. Also, the only other change is the wifi doesn't light up.

Answer:satellite a135 powering on but monitor stays blank

Also, I contacted customer support and found out that the hard drive is not responding. Is there some way to trigger it?

I have a refurbished, out-of-warranty Gateway Profile 5 desktop. The screen is totally blank. I contacted Gateway. They are pretty confident the built-in display is defective. I was able to attach a second display which would also go blank just after the Windows XP Pro splash screen appeared. Using the 2nd display, I was able to access the bios. When I looked at the display setup, it was set to LCD & CRT. Not thinking, I changed the setting to LCD since I wasn't using a CRT. That disconnected my 2nd display, so I now have two totally blank screens. How can I re-access the 2nd display and then also avoid a blank screen when Windows XP boots up?

Dell vostro 220

My computer was lagging and wasn't connecting to the internet properly, and then it froze so I shut it down. When I started it back up, the BIOS loaded but then went to a blank black screen with a mouse. I can move the mouse around. It won't load any further. I've tried all the safe modes and it does the same thing. And I tried cleaning all the dust off the computer. I've tried waiting at that screen for longer than 3 hours. It just stays there.

It's possible that it's a virus but I don't know. How can I solve this problem? Because I can't get into the computer to do a system restore. Please help, thank you!

I have an Acer laptop which is about two years old. It started to run slowly and not very efficiently - then the screen started to go blank. Sometimes it goes blank when i am using it or when i am not. . I can see the computer is actually still processing so the whole computer does not shut down. I would be able to reboot and then the computer would be fine again. It started to do this more and more frequently until it was happening every couple of minutes and then my computer stopped booting up and loading software. I took my laptop to a recommended pc repair shot who reinstalled windows (unfortunately). It definitely was running much better and the screen stopped going blank. about 10 days later and the computer is running well still but the screen is starting to go blank again regularly - every 10-20 minutes! is this a virus/software/hardware??? thanks in advance for any help you are able to give me!

Answer:My computer screen keeps going blank even thought the computer is still running.

When the system is operating properly, set a System Restore point.

Then start out by updating all drivers and programs to the latest avalilable version.
Get all drivers from the PC Manufacturer's website, and get the updated programs from the program manufacturer's website. If you cannot find an update for a program older than 2 years, uninstall it.

Then visit Windows Update and get all updates
Then visit Windows Update and get Service Pack 1 (usually under Important Updates). Read these notes for installing SP1: Steps to follow before you install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 from the Microsoft Download Center
Then visit Windows Update and get any other available updates

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

I have read that the K-series have RAM that can become loose or were not properly seated into the slot at the factory..  Maybe your son hit it loose.  Good luck.

My computer screen goes blank like it was going to sleep but I do not have it set to hibernate, I have it set to stay on all the time. When it goes blank I am not able to bring the screen back up, I have to hold the reset button (start button) for about
15 seconds and then the computer shuts off. After it is off I am able to press the start button once again and when it does it ask me what mode I want to start in (safe mode or regular mode).

What could be wrong?

I have a sony RZ402P from approx 5 years ago. Now it was playing up lately so i decided to format it so i did. so after finish formatting put all the backup files and folders and updated to SP3 and install all the updates. Then it was working well after a few restarts and shutdowns.

3 hours later my mum decide to use it but it didn't come up the screen still on standby (blinking) and the keyboard lock keys come on then goes off again. So i diced to investigate the problem. I even tried removing the cleaning CPU Fan(whcih caused the problem the last time), RAM. As am deaf, my parent saids it not sounding right. and the DVD drives wouldn't open fully it will just peek out then back in, nothing is responding. So i took the HDD out to use on my current working PC to backup all the files.

I think its dead? Any ideas which i can try?

hi need help i have a packard bell computer it stopped working on thursday switched it on and all i get is a blank screen the monitor goes to green then amber and stays blank as in black with nothing at all on the screen as i am new to computers and started up my own business i have a lot of software that i bought from the internet which is saved to the computer at a few thousand pounds so could any kind person out there help me with the problem as i do not have a lot of money as putting it into the business and also the guarentee has run out i have only hadthe computer for 14 months thank you don

Answer:blank computer screen

Any beeps when you switch it on? Any changes to the PC lately, crashes (or more frequent crashes), blue screens? Any strange noises from the unit when it's on? Possibilites include overheating (and subsequent damage to the CPU) or failing power supply. If the guarantee has run out you can take the side off the machine and see if loads of dust and fluff has collected inside and around the fans, that would point to overheating, but it sounds as if the damage has already been done on that front.

I have a Vaio Laptop. When I turn it on, it shows the logo and then it goes to a blank screen. I don't know how to get into safe mode (the f8 key does not go to safe mode). When I turn off the comp and turn it back on again, it still goes to the blank screen. I can get to the setup menu but that's about it. Any help would be appreciated.P.S. I only say blank screen because the color is off and I can't see part of the left side of the screen. So any advice regarding a blinking cursor or blue screen is appreciated as well. Thank you.

I am a newbie on the site and I am in need of help. First time I responded to an old thread, so I hope I am doing this correctly this time.
We have a computer
AMD athlon 3000+ w/heatsink and fan
1 gig 2700 ddr333 ram with heatsinks over ram sticks
fx5200 128 mb
aopen mobo ak79d400vn
520 watt atx power supply

Problem: Tried to upgrade video card to 6600. Installed it and drivers and the computer starts up, fan is running, but nothing else a blank screen. Purchased off ebay mainly for processor and mobo to upgrade son's computer. Thought this would solve son's gaming problems ( BF2 should be hung for its greediness in cpu and video power) Now I am stuck.
Brought it to the repair shop and the guy said mobo fried and continued to tell me how bad the AMD cpu's are and tried to make me one for $$$$. Is the guy right?
Question: Is there a way to tell if the mobo is indeed blown and /or the cpu and can I change out the processor into another computer? I hate to think nothing can be salvaged on it.
I hope I haven't forgotten to say anything- Please forgive !

Answer:Computer screen blank

Brought it to the repair shop and the guy said mobo fried and continued to tell me how bad the AMD cpu's are and tried to make me one for $$$$. Is the guy right?Click to expand...

The guy is not right. Amd cpus are very good. For gaming they're tops, and for normal tasks they're no slouch either. My guess is he'd rather make the $$$$(big bucks), than make just a few $$(bucks) helping you fix your current one.

So, are you saying your system works with the 5200, but when you install the 6600, it doesn't work? If so, what sysptoms does it give? Lights, noises, fans, etc.

You could put the cpu into another pc with the same socket type(it also has to support the same cpu bus speed), to test it. Or you could swap the motherboard in your current pc and see if it works then, but both tasks are somewhat of a pain(the cpu will need thermal grease applied, and motherboards take a while to remove). You probably have a "socket A" amd cpu, since you say athlon, and not athlon64.

Also, your new card may be stressing your psu, if it's underpowered/faulty. You might want to list the brand and specs(amps per voltage rail), if you know the info.

Hello everyone I am new here but so far reading all the topics it seems pretty helpful! Anyway I'm pretty good at repairing puters but I went all new style on my new one and I have nothing to test my equipment with. Im building a higher end gaming system so I went with SLI setup, now everything is new and is all made for SLI, yet at boot up all I get is a blank screen and one long beep followed by two short. Easy enough the booklet on the video card says that it means the video card or motherboard is bad, well without the video card in the same beeps happen, also the north bridge cooler gets pretty warm, normal?   Note: At first start-up it ran fine, installed xp and ran NFS Most Wanted smooth, then started a defrag and bam black screen of death. reseated the card, reset bios, and check RAM presto it worked for about 5min then froze.550w PS w/ SLIEVGA 6800 PCI-eAsus A8N-SLI mb w/ AMD3500512mb pc3200Coolermaster water coolerAnybody expericence the same problem? I cant tell if its a mb, video card or some other problem. I checked the BEEP POST and I know its a video code but is there any way it would be a mb issue?
