Preferred Solution: [SOLVED] update fails... and fails... and fails

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi -

Windows Update error 800B0100 = TRUST_E_NOSIGNATURE = A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider.

There may be a root security check issue. Try re-registering Wintrust.dll -
START | type cmd.exe | RIGHT-click on cmd.exe | "Run as Administrator" | paste -

Code:

regsvr32 Wintrust.dll /s

Check Windows Updates again = www.update.microsoft.com

Good evening, it has been a while. I got a custom built computer about a year ago so that I can play FSX and P3D reasonably well. Everything seemed to go ok, not great, just ok. This are my specs:
Intel i7 [email protected] - Nvidia EVGA GTX 970 4gb - Asus Z97 Maximus Hero VII - WD black series 1TB HD - Corsair RM series RM850 - Samsung 840 EVO MZ-7TE500BW 500gb SSD.
About a month ago I started to notice that my wifi connection would be lost, then come back on its own. It got worse about two weeks ago, so I tried running the troubleshooter, it failed saying an error prevented it from running. Odd I thought.
I tried running windows updater, it downloaded a number of files to update, but continuosly failed to install 3 of them, apparently related to Microsoft Net Framework.
This morning I decided to uninstall P3D, and install a clean updated version, and the setup failed, never happened before. In the forums it adviced to make sure Direct X9 is installed, tried doing that and it failed as well.
This is very stressful, and affects my immune system, which is not good for me. Can someone here please be kind enough to take some time to help me solev this mess, thanks very much.
This are some logs from what happened today.

Answer:Windows update fails, Direct X fails, troubleshooter fails

im sorry to hear that you are having health issues sir. may i ask what OS yo are running

I'm simply attempting to run update on my Windows 7 machine. Update will not run, downloading and running the SP1 update fails, downloading and running the Update Readiness Tool fails, trying to launch a troubleshooter fails. I ran sfc and have attached the log along with all the error codes screenshots. I have no idea how to proceed from here other than to drop this machine off at the nearest recycling center.

Answer:update fails, SP1 install fails, troubleshooter fails

Looks to me like you're having problems accessing the COMONENTS registry hive - although I would have thought that would also make a SFC scan fail.

I suspect I know what the problem is - let's see if a different tool can expose it...
I need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.x

Not cause by virus .. this just started today. I tried a restore point of yesterday .. nothing. I have tried several suggestions from the web but nothing seems to do it? I know it would be better if i could name them but can't remember the exact commands .. will look for the page again. One dealt with sfc /newscan (or such).

Really need to get this working again .. any ideas or pointers?

Answer:Windows 10 start button fails, search fails restart fails

Yes, left click on start button and right click on task bar icons does nothing?
Tried flhthemi's suggestion "Open powershell with admin privileges Copy and paste this line at the PS prompt:
Get‐AppXPackage ‐AllUsers | Foreach {Add‐AppxPackage ‐DisableDevelopmentMode ‐Register

"$﴾$_.InstallLocation﴿\AppXManifest.xml"}

Worked once but problem came back and wouldn't work the second time?

Tried the .bat file from AveYo's suggestion, lost my wifi connection and couldn't restart it, had to revert to a previous restore point.

Anyone know a fix for this?

Thanks

So, earlier today, everything was fine. My computer was working normally nothing was acting up. While unplugging my laptop from the wall I dropped it, but nothing appeared to be wrong. A little while later I restarted my computer and it worked fine for about a minute and then everything froze in windows explorer, nothing would work, folders wont open task manager never appears start menu wont come up, nothing.
I booted into safe mode and everything works fine through there, so I looked around online and one suggestion was to update my BIOS so I tried to update from Dells Inspiron 1420 A08 to the newer A10 BIOS version, trying that in safe mode failed so I tried to boot normally and quickly do whatever it told me, when I tried it wouldnt restart (and still refuses too, I have to shut it down manually outside of safe mode) it said it couldnt update the BIOS version because it couldnt locate the image, but I downloaded it directly from Dells own website.
So then I tried to do a system restore, and I got the message:

The disk Vista (c:) has errors
Windows detected file system corruption on Vista (c:)
You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored.

So I clicked scan and fix, and nothing happens. (this is back in safe mode by the way) so I opened a command promp and typed sfc /scannow
and it scanned and found some errors but were unable to fix them. Details are located in the CBS.log
So I opened the log and I found the following:

Answer:Vista - Explorer Freezes on reboot, system restore fails, BIOS update fails. Help.

Hi, the first rule if you ever drop a laptop (and it appears OK) is to take the battery out, boot from the mains if all is OK turn off add battery and reboot. Now you may have damaged the MB and or the RAM seating or HDD cable connection as well as the monitor connect cable.. etc ...etc. You can see where this is heading to the shop would be my advice.

About a week ago update keep saying an update failed due to lack of drive space so I fixed the issue. After that the update went through but keep failing and the pc would boot and remove the update. The pc was working normally otherwise. I have been extremely busy with work so ignored the issue hoping to resolve it this weekend however yesterday I came home to the pc endlessly rebooting. Just before the reboot the windows logo appears and then a message pops up saying restoring your previous version of windows. I have read many threads about the issues people are having but didn't find any that offered up a fix for mine. Spoke with MS Support and the best they could do with tell me to reinstall the OS.

Win10 64bit
I5 CPU
Gigabyte mobo

System Restore fails
Startup repair fails
Go back to previous build fails
No option to get into safe mode that I can find

I can boot from Ubuntu CD and pc is working properly.

Can anyone offer any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Answer:Boot loop after update no safe mode option-repair fails- restore fails

Please boot your computer with Windows Setup Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.
Please execute below command and reboot your computer to see issue resolves.

Code:
DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions

Please replace partition letter C: with Windows installed partition letter. When computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1 and 10 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assign any other drive letter usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit /enum | find "osdevice" command can be use to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

Here is the list of the problems in order of which I noticed things going awry:

1. My Firefox browser will re-direct my google searches to a new Firefox window pop-up with "google-analytics" in its address bar, but would never finish loading the new popped-up window. Firefox would also re-direct and never finish loading my google searches by opening a new tab with a "directdlr.com/....." in its address bar.

2. Microsoft Office 2010 applications don't open, instead a "DW20.exe" and a "DWWin.exe" replicates itself an infinite number of times in my processes, maxing out my CPU.

3. My anti-virus applications (Spyware Doctor, Microsoft Security Essentials, avast!, malwarebytes) won't update, and therefore won't run or scan. Firefox also won't load various anti-virus sites, such as this message board.

4. Other applications crash directly upon opening them (VLC Media Player)

Solutions that I've tried:

1. Resetting my router. I'd read somewhere online that doing this would solve the problem. It did not.

2. Trying to restore from a restore point. I opened System Restore, but the restore points were all very recent and within the timeframe of infection.

3. Un-installing Microsoft Office 2010 and re-installing. System won't let me un-install.

Here are my scan reports:

Hi guys!
Haven't received the W10 pop up notification yet, although I have reserved (UK) so out of curiosity I was checking win update for any recent updates for my 8.1 machine and after various successful security updates and a restart I was then surprised to see 'Downloading Windows 10' when I checked again. However, for over an hour now an update- which is only 3.9mb fails not allowing me to update anything else.. according to the update info this small update is an 'anti malware' update from March of this year- KB3025417 and is listed as 'important'... the update install list even has 'update to Windows 10 Pro' listed as failed, reflecting my multiple attempts..
I've just restarted the same 'Windows 10 download' via Win update and its saying 'Getting set up files..' and seems to be taking considerably longer than it had in the past attempts.. could this be it finally, regardless of the failed Win defender update??
15 minutes gone so far...

Answer:Win10 update fails- 3.9mb file 'KB3025417' fails every time... help!

can someone please help me here pleeeeease? no Win10 luck at all... now im getting error '80244019' and cant check for updates... the original anti-malware update from march still wont install. i have run a malwar scan and its 'clean' no W10 popup yet. its failed about 20 times now. help!

Not long ago (a week and a half or so) I was playing Payday 2 and my computer froze, I turned off my computer to restart it and could not load my computer past a pre-loading windows black screen where the mouse was not showing. I then tried booting my computer in various ways (safe, with and without networking etc) and they worked, however I believe one of my drivers failing to load was the reason for my "Windows Normal" startup to fail. I eventually decided through, I then looked at using the system restore point function in order to hope for some success. The system restore function when I restored to; a week ago, two weeks ago, did not seem too alleviate my issue much, it did however allow me to load windows but almost immediately after using the machine for 2-5 minutes I would have a frozen screen again. I then eventually decided to just factory reset the machine out of desperation, the factory reset eventually happened successfully and I was able to load windows and login into my new user successfully, as I learnt that I had to reinstall my graphical drivers I then attempted to put in various CD's in in order to install these drivers, eventually when I figured out the order of CD's that I needed to install for my games to load properly, I then resumed my activities on my pc (such as gaming, browsing etc).

Flash forward to the second factory reset, this one happened due to a very similar freezing problem yet again, and again I decided to turn off my computer ... Read more

140 Updates available - and they fail within 30seconds with an errorcode800700C1 Looking into this error I ran the SFC \scannow and it failed unable to repair files

I then looked that up and talked on chat to MS and was suggested to run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

which also failed with Error: 0x800f0906

The source files could not be downloaded.
Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required t
o restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see

So i looked that up and found this article
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/repair-corrupt-windows-image-error-0x800f0906

which I have also ran
the CMD commands
and the re-ran DISM again
which resulted in the same error

any suggestions please

I have attached the SFC /scannow log for just (SR)
and the DISM log

Answer:Windows update not working - SFC fails and DISM fails

Edit:

Please run chkdsk /r, or chkdsk /f if you are using a SSD.

To run chkdsk /r in Windows 8/8.1 you will need to open the Elevated Command Prompt.  The easiest way to do this is to press the Windows key and the X key.   A menu will open with the option Command Prompt (Admin), click on this.

You will see a window similar to the one below.

When the Elevated Command Prompt opens copy and paste chkdsk /f in the Command Prompt, if this is a SSD you do not want to run the /r switch, you will want to use chkdsk /f then press Enter.

You will receieve the message "CHKDSK cannot be run because it is in use by another process.  Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?  <Y/N>".

Type in Y and press Enter.

This will take a while to run, please be patient and allow it to complete the scan.  Do not stop this scan as this can damage your operating system.

When the scan is finished please download and run ListChkdskResult.

This will open Notepad with the results of the chkdsk scan.  Please copy and then paste this log in your topic.

System info: Win XP Home SP3, 2 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB

I installed IL-2 Sturmovik Demo v. 2.0 via Install Shield.
I first tried uninstalling it (stupidly wnough, I know, don't need any extra comments on that) by removing all the files from the folder in question, AND all the registry keys I could find with Ubi Soft or Il-2 in them.

Now; The IL-2 Sturmovik Demo is NOT any longer in the Add/Remove program list in the Control Panel. When I try uninstalling (using Uninstall Shield) it claims that the file in original folder is not there (Uninst.isu). Agreed. Common practice dictates I re-install the program and try un-installing it again. Thing is, when trying to re-install, I get the message that the game is already there.

Finally, the Question:
How do I remove the program If I cannot re-install the program (see above)? Catch 22?

Answer:Solved: uninstall fails, re-install fails - what to do?

Never Mind - I had missed a registry entry. Sorry for that.

So you try to run the 'rate my computer' and it fails showing this error message:

You are then advised to run a command prompt (old dos screen) as administrator and key in and run
winsat formal.

This fails and gives the following error messages:
error. failed to load XML
An invalid character was found in text content

unable to process xml file. winsat\main.cpp(4742)

Error: cannot process assessment results cannot load xml data from string
an invalid character was found in text content from interface msxm16.dll:Ixmldomdocument2

You start searching for these invalid characters after reading the various help threads out there such as this one: Windows Expierience Index could not be computed

You learn that not only does your computer have a bios but also something called a smbios, you may find it in registry thus:

Note the odd square OO's after version.
You might confirm this using HWiNFO, HWiNFO32 & HWiNFO64 - Hardware Information and Analysis Tools utility as seen here:

Editing the registry value will not work! Updating the bios probably won't work. The answer to this most frustrating problem is as follows:

Get onto your computer supplier, mine is Novatech here in the UK and I'll now paste his explanation here for you all.

The Problem

When the manufacture flashes the SMBIOS, it is basically adding simple and basic information, to allow the main BIOS to function, as well as hold data about the machine or component. Sometimes though the... Read more

Hi,

I had the exact same problem today with my HP after installing the latest Microsoft Updates. Luckily I found an other version of the ahcix64s file on my hard-drive.

If you can somehow boot into command prompt or use the Windows Recovery Console - rename the current ahcix64s.sys file to something else and copy the other ahcix64s.sys in it's place.

Computer boots perfectly now.

Answer:Hotmail login fails DNS error when using IE, MSN Messenger fails no service found?

Greetings, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Hi All,

I have the above computer (or should I say my wife) & it has been nothing but a right pain since the first day we got it.
I have had it about 2 years & must have had to reformat the HD at least 6-8 times using the Product Recovery Disc as laptop wouldn't boot.
The laptop runs Vista.

Anyway problem I have now is that once again laptop fails to boot but for some reason Product Recovery disc also fails to work.....
What can I do...

I have read on various forums that it might work if I reformat the HD first using some s/w on a bootable CD but how/ what S/W do I use.....?
The laptop has a 160Gb SATA HD installed. How can I check this is all working.
I have no idea if current problem is S/W or hardware related..

Does Toshiba have a utility I can use...?

Many thanks for any help....

John

Answer:Satellite U300-13U fails to boot and Recovery disc fails to work too

Hi

What happened exactly?
Do you get some error messages using recover disk?

Please check if the HDD is OK! You can check this in BIOS.
If the HDD is listed in BIOS then the BIOS found the HDD and the HDD is not dead.

Usually you could boot the notebook using an Live disk? for example Bart PE
It?s a bootable live windows CD/DVD

http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

This can helps to format the HDD and then to use the recovery disk!

Hello, After a few months of operating well, my T500 started failling to enter stand by when I shut the lid (that is, the screen). On the other hand, using the OS (windows XP) menu dialogs  to enter stand by, that works fine. After a few more months, when I'm already in the habit of entering stand by manually through the dialogs, this started failing too, with error messages saying the modem driver is at fault.- I recently updated the BIOS and screen drivers hoping the stand by situation will improve- No updated are available for the modem driver. The  Lenovo installed vesrion is still the latest one.- I haven't found any relevant logs in the Event Viewer Any suggestions?  Thanks, aharel

oh me guys I need somebody really crafty!
i have a HP Pavilion laptop [dv5117ci] with factory load XP Pro SP2and factory restore discs. the system became corrupted by a failed Win update.
it had multiple files showing bad, so rather than chase them one at a time for an unknowable number of days, I decided to create a new directory and install fresh copy of WinXP Pro

That looked like it was going to work but after being up on the initial boot, wobbly, for about 45 minutes, something caused a freeze, and I was toasted after that. Same routine again: bootup, get error "Windows failed to start because the following file is missing or corrupt". so back into chasing one after another ad infinitum.

All day I have tried to get something to work so I could get the data off the system then nuke it. I can't get anything up and running so I can remove files.

Anyone have a suggestion? is there an "xp light" or something that maybe just does the MINIMUM kind of load, just enough to get win explorer running so I can copy files?

Running Windows 8.1 and File History was working OK for my computer, actually on two different computers worked just fine. (I never could get File History to work with Windows 8). Then suddenly this feature just up an quit. Got a little "red" flag in the Action Center. Using the control panel an "setting" up File History my system says that file history is turned off. I never did turn it off, it seems it just up an turned itself off. But here is the thing, I select my external drive to use for file history and the system says the service can not be started because its disabled or no enabled devices are associated. It "sees" the drive but will not enabled this drive. I have used various windows programs, such as system services..to "turn" on file history. But there seems not to be anything that will fix file history. Been reading here on the forum for help...but it seems all the help is non specific to file history not working. AN also very technical, for a non technical user, on how to fix file history. I have yet to see a simple fix to "make" Windows 8.1 to again run file history.
Why is this SO DIFFICULT to use? It almost takes a computer expert with knowledge on programing to fix weird things like this. I would just like to point and click to backup the computer...but windows is now becoming NON-USER friendly to manage these types of things. Very frustrating.

Answer:File History fails to work and fails to see external drive

Well it has been some time since I posted this issue. So I see NO responses STILL. AN I still have not been able to use File History EVER. It just does not work....period. Widows 8.1.1 install did not even come close of fixing "file History" working again. All I get is: file history and the system says the service can not be started because its disabled or no enabled devices are associated. There is NO user answer anywhere to fix this. I click enable file history. An the above answer pops up every time. File History is crap as far as I am concerned.

I took on a basket case for a friend. Machine hadnt booted for months. I got it running in normal mode after it churned for 2 hours and found outdated Norton Internet security and AVG running. Unable to uninstall them using uninstall, so got in registry and deleted all mentions of AVG, Norton and Symantec. Managed to download and install Windows updates and SP 3 for XP as well as IE 8. Tried to install Microsoft security essentials but it won't install. Ran Malware bytes which found about 15 threats which I let it delete. I then installed while online Avast! and it seems to run.Tried to install Word viewer, got error message, then ran Malwarebytes again, one more threat found. Now only boots in safe mode with networking, so tried installingword viewer again, same error (install failed). IE now won't start.

I think I must have accidentally deleted something I need while going through registry deleting Norton stuff. I tried System File Checker but it wanted original install CD to proceed and I don't have it.

I have tried running Combofix in safe mode without letting it fix anything just for info, but Combofix won't get past the opening autoscan screen. I tried letting it run for two hours, but no scanning takes place.

Any hope other than complete system restore and loss of owner's data?

Answer:Boots only in safe mode, windows installer fails, IE fails

Sounds to me as if a clean install is a good idea...after moving valued data files to safety.

I would move files simply by connecting the drive as a slave to a different system...and moving the files considered valuable.

When friends bring me their infected systems, that's usually the quickest/surest method that I use to ensure that they have a working system that is free of malware.

Hello.

I have been assigned to fix this computer at my work. It is a new computer we are making that will contain 4 OSs; Red Hat 5 Enterprise Linux, Windows Vista Business, Windows XP and Windows 2000. The OS to boot up is selected by using Grub. The hard drive is partitioned into 6 partitions. Xp is located on the 0 partition, Vista on 1, Win2000 on 2, Red hat on 4. IT installed all the software but now there is a problem so they threw it at me, the new intern...

Red Hat, Vista and Xp all worked fine and boot up correctly. But once Windows 2000 was installed XP no longer works. Now all the OSs installed work except for Windows Xp. Through my two day online research I discovered that you should install Window OS in order of oldest to newest (2000 then XP then Vista). It seems IT did not know about this which is why we now have this problem.

Grub reports an invalid device when it tries to boot up Widows XP (the grub commands are correct). We figure the boot sector or the MBR was overwritten by Window2000's. So I need to fix this. But the biggest problem is the Windows XP CD fails to boot from the BIOS. This CD has been used on other systems and successfully boots from BIOS and opens the recovery console. Also other boot CDs work on this system, only the Windows XP boot CD fails. On this system the BIOS sees the CD and starts it. I get the message ?Checking hardware integrity? or something similar. After a few seconds this message disappears and the computer just sits... Read more

Hi mate, i feel for you when you are trying to 'impress' the new boss. By the way, welcome to TSF! I think what you will find is that the installation order was incorrect. Basically (as you probably already know) you need to install the older os before the new os. I think by installing 2000 on the machine you have conflicting boot files. Is there a way you can connect this drive to another machine, backup the critical stuff, reinstall in the right order?

The laptop was running fine, but left unattended for several days. It came unplugged and the battery drained. When rebooting it, it went to the Recovery options. I went to a command prompt and it went to X:\. Chkdsk would not complete, recovery would not complete, restore to factory settings would not complete ... as if the hard drive is damaged. I do not see any option on HP.com to buy a recovery kit for this model. What should I do? Thank you, Tony

Hello more knowledgeable person than myself. I've been having trouble trying to get my computer to boot; I'd noticed a drop in performance (still unsure why) so decided to boot up in safe mode and poke around - it was not my original intention to install Advanced SystemCare 5.3.0 but somehow it happened. I ran the 'deep-care' utility and everything was working fine, my computer rebooted and performed a disk check: there weren't any errors that I can remember apart from [something along the lines of] 60 reparse files. Following this my computer restarted and Windows failed to load, restarting to show my startup repair - this isn't the first time this has happened, a similar thing occurred following previous attempts at boosting speed, though before I was able to get Windows up and running using an Ubuntu installation disk, although I still don't understand why - no need to say that it didn't work this time.
Startup repair refuses to work and my system restore points have vanished; I would try doing a repair install if I had a copy of the disk. Hi everyone!

First time poster, long time listener...

I work IT for a moderately-sized business and I just did a clean install on one of the user laptops that isn't in rotation at the moment.

I clean installed Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit. Nothing has been installed on this PC (besides CCleaner, which I ran a few times and then uninstalled). It is currently updated to Service Pack 1.
The computer is an HP ProBook 4525s.

Now, onto the meat of the issue.

I attempted to run the Windows 7 Convenience Roll-up to save time on updates, but I'm having quite a few issues and some catch-22s.

-The .net framework that comes in the roll-up installs fine, no issues.
-The actual updates- "june_rollup", "servicestack" and "wmf5" all pull up the "Windows Standalone Installer" dialogue box, but that's it. Once it reaches that box, it just looks like it's "installing updates" forever. I had it sit overnight last night and when I came into the office today, nothing. Still in the same exact place.

Troubleshooting attempted/Questions answered:

- No AV is on the system. I just did a clean install.
- I am the administrator on the device.
- I attempted to update Internet Explorer (some support articles mentioned that), but I run into the catch-22 of "update it through Windows Update!" (which isn't working, just searches forever) or to run the download straight from Microsoft's site, which then tells me to u... Read more

2. 1TB Toshiba 5400rpm (for Programs and Games)
3. 1TB Toshiba 5400rpm (for Movies, songs etc)

This laptop had Windows 7 installed in it with Intel Rapid Storage technology enabled. Few months ago, I changed the SATA mode to AHCI and installed windows 7 on 32GB mSATA drive. I kept the C drive only for windows and didn't install anything else on it. I created an MKLINK for some folders such as Common Files/Adobe and Appdata/Adobe so that heavy applications won't eat space on the little drive.
It was working fine for about 4-5 months, till one day the Windows 7 simply failed to boot. It was stuck on the Starting Windows screen forever. I searched on the sevenforums website and tried a lot of things such as cleaning the RAM, disabling startup programs and services etc. But it didn't help. neither did sfc /scannow nor windows repair using installation disc.
I could boot in safe mode but not normal mode.

So, I decided to reinstall Win7 from DVD that came with dell.
But the installation was stuck at final step of install after first reboot.
Again i tried several tricks described in forums, like checking for Legacy Boot in BIOS, making sure SATA is in AHCI, unplugging all USB drives as well... Read more

Answer:Windows Fails To Boot, Fails to Install

Your post is quite interesting but too much for me to absorb at one sitting. With that said I will voice a single concern and then ask a follow-up question:

My concern is this:

I changed the SATA mode to AHCI and installed windows 7 on 32GB mSATA drive

Above seems too small for extended growth.

Now, are you trying to do a clean install or reinstall? If that latter, could there be an issue related to the above (eg, not enough room)? I apologize for not try to absorb everything you stated; however, I made it all the way through high school using Cliff's Notes and I never had to read a single book! Guess I'm just lazy...

A security update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903) has been failing for months now. The error message is : #WARNING: Install failed, error= 0x80070643. All attempts to search Microsoft have been of no help. Can anyone tell me what I must do to get the update to work. We get the message that an update is waiting each and every time we shutdown the computer. The computer is running Professional XP. We have started shutting down and skipping the update which is a bad habit to have. We are on SP2. Any suggestions? We are running The Shield Firewall. Is that a problem?

I would try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and remove any parts of the .net Framework on your computer and try the update again. Read the description of the utility before you use it. There is a link to download the utility on the Microsoft description page.

I found the following, or pieced it together from a couple of posts I found.
These are technically for Vista, I couldn't find anything for Win7.
Bits isn't running to be stopped, half the items in the list are either not present or access is denied.
I went as far as to disabled UAC and shut down all antivirus and malware applications before running the fix.
The only thing I can find for Win7 is to give up and completely scrub my computer.

Somebody please tell me there is a better option.

Hi guys

i need to pick your brains about this problem i having. I have just finished building my 6th custom built pc and have installed windows 7 pro-64 bit on. When i go to update the OS using the windows update utility about 80% of the updates will fail and give me an error code that is unknown to microsoft. I also cant install programs such as service pack 1 or IE9, adobe reader and even an antivirus, infact pretty much anything downloaded on the computer. I have tried playing with the Cryptographical service in the services.msc tool and found that when i stop this service more updates do install, but not all of them including service pack 1 and IE9. I have also tried using tools from microsoft such as their windows update readiness tool. Basically i have followed every step on this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

and its still not working. I tried using the OS instalattion media on a secondary computer and confirm that its not the media, and now i am starting to think it could be hardware related. I have also tried windows pro 32-bit and windows premium and i still get the same result. here are my specs for pc:

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
MSI 880GM-E41 880G Socket AM3 onboard graphics 8 channel HD audio mATX Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X3 450 3.2GHz Socket AM3 95w 1.5MB L2 Cache Retail Boxed Processor
4GB DDR3 1333MHz Memory Module
1TB WD Cavier green 7200RPM Hard drive

Any help i would much appreciate it

Thanks

Ok, here is the deal, I was having problems with my router and was receiving help from this site on another thread when I suddenly couldn't get online. I did some research and found out that I had malware that prevented me from getting an IP address and caused me many many headaches to fix. After almost 10days without being able to get online, I finally found a fix that resolved my issue, a complete repair install of XP. After that, I was finally able to get online, but one of my drivers was causing a BSOD error (I think that's how you say it), and I remember when my computer completely crashed back in February and I did a complete XP re-installation, I had the same problem. I remember that the fix was to download the XP updates. So, I go to Microsoft Windows update site and try to download the program that lets you use the site for XP updates and keep getting an error message: "The following updates were not installed: Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)
Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1." When I go to Windows Update History, instead of saying that it failed and allowing me to see why it failed, it says that it was cancelled and I can't find out why. I have tried six times to download this update to no avail, and am ready to get out the hammer. I plan on getting a new computer within the next month, but I need this one to work until then. I bought a new laptop recently and I have windows vista home premium on it. First time vista user so I'm not fully familiar yet. I haven't done much yet except remove some bloatware and installed a couple programs. But my windows update keep failing now, it installed some updates sucessfully but now I got 8 more left and everytime I run it it says they were installed sucessfully and then i have to restart. When I restart it opens windows and says configuring before I get to the login screen and it sits at 0% for a long time then says it wasn't configured correctly and reverts changes. When I look in the update history it says the error code is 800719E4 for all of the failed updates. What is happening why won't they succeed? Anyone know how to fix this?

BTW I have tried installing the oldest update alone and it still failed. Also I disabled norton internet security that came free with the comp and it still failed (I kinda regret ever installing that but thats neither here nor there).

Clean installing W7 x86 is no problem. But
1) upgrading Vista x86 to W7 x86 fails and automatically rolls back to Vista, and
2) attempt to clean install W7 x64 results in BSOD when rebooting to finalize the process.
Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Answer:Two issues: Upgrade install of W7x86 fails and W7x64 fails to clean install

Hi churin and welcome to Se7en Forums

I would actually never contemplate on upgrading one OS to another - a clean install is by far the best way to go. True, installing the upgrade version of Vista as a clean install means that you actually install Vista twice, once on an empty drive/partition and then as an upgrade over itself, but it is the same OS. I would expect that the same (or similar) procedure would be true for W7. This could explain your first problem.
As for your second problem, it is possible that your download is corrupted for some reason or other. You could try downloading it again to see if that is the problem.

My windows 7 system had .Net Framework v. 4.5.1 installed and windows update notified me of a security update. Every time I try to install it, it fails with an error code 643. I did some googling and found a couple of things, including a Microsoft Fix-It (that didn't work) and a .NET Repair tool (that didn't work). So I went and uninstalled it completely. Then windows update shows an update available of course, the .NET 4.5.1 so I re-installed and it failed the install. When I re-boot I get an error saying I need to install .NET 4.0.30319.

what's going on? Why does it keep failing the install?

I'm using Windows XP, SP3. My computer is a Dell Optiplex GX270 (full tower, not the smaller horizontal things), 3.20 GHz processor with 1GB RAM.

I tried to use Windows Update today after finding out that I 11 critical updates. They all downloaded, but when it goes to install, it just fails. I've turned off my anti-virus, and my firewall. I've restarted, and nothing is working. I'm stumped.

Try this:

1. Re-register the Windows Update DLL with the commands below

Click Start, click Run. or Windows key + R (faster)

Copy and paste each of the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

The iTunes application on my computer notified me that an update to version 11.2.2 was available. Clicking the "Install" button and entering the administrator password led to downloading and installation of the update...except at the end of the process I receive a notice that there were errors in the installation of the updates and to try downloading the file and installing manually. When I follow this procedure, I receive the following error message:

I have tried uninstalling iTunes so I can re-install it but the uninstaller returns the same error. I have tried deleting the problem file manually but get a message that I "need permission from SYSTEM" to do so. (Apparently administrator access isn't sufficient.)

At this point I can neither uninstall nor install iTunes and have not found any help at the Apple website. Any suggestions for dealing with this situation will be much appreciated.

Hi,I recently fixed some trouble with my computer with your help - and I think my drive might be failing - seatools does not detect it, but it boots into windows and I am not having any trouble with it.Here's what I did to fix a critical error I was receiving, upon Patio's recommendation I think - Used the Windows CD to repair Windows to fix a critical error with the Login services. So: 1. Repaired Windows with the Windows CD.2. Windows Update now fails to update anything. When I tried a manual update of one of them, Windows Installer 3.1, I get an "Access Denied Error"Any suggestions on fixing windows update?I've been trying suggestions from this thread - http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/700401-cannot-install-windows-updates.html

Hello and thanks for reading. Let me begin by saying I've been trying to figure this problem out for hours and hours now, and every solution I find that looks promising, just leads me in circles.

I'm trying my best to avoid a clean install.

The problem started while playing a game, causing a BSOD. After a restart, I noticed some of my programs just didn't boot up, for example Core Temp. I attempted to manually start Core Temp and received the following error: "The system could not find the environment option that was entered."

That problem lead me here: The system could not find the environment option that was entered. - Microsoft Answers

Which, obviously, did nothing for me. I tried to create a new user, but when I click the link in the control panel to do so, nothing happens.

I then tried to repair my windows installation using my disc, and it said it could not find any problems. After searching some more, I found another solution would be to perform an upgrade to my Windows installation to fix the problems.

I put the disc in, nothing happened so I went to the setup.exe directly and got the same error as above. So I then booted in safe mode, and it loaded. I got excited until it said something like "an error prevented a compliance check from completing"

And just to be very clear, my windows 7 is valid, I'd be more than happy to share an image of my newegg receipt or even my box to get that out of the way, as I've seen a lot of fla... Read more

Work through these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7.

I would also restore my default program association to solve the SFC problem, which I believe should be associated with .exe file: Default File Type Associations - Restore - Windows 7 Forums. If not the tutorial's author will know for sure.

If not a Repair Install should be able to sort this after getting clean of any infection.

I would also not dread a Clean Reinstall which almost always is better than getting a new PC given the load of crapware and useless utilities larded onto new consumer PC's. Problem:
Last Tuesday's (Critical Update) Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)
"A security issue has been identified that could allow a remote attacker to misrepresent a system action or behavior unbeknownst to users on Microsoft Windows systems. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft."

Will initialize installation but...WILL NOT INSTALL.

I have rebooted, run Spybot/Ad-aware and other Security scans just to rule out any Malware or other intrusionary cause but, with the same result (failed to install).

*Note that two other Updates along with this one installed with no problem.

Over the years I think I've only had one or two Updates which failed to install and these turned out to be caused by a problem at MS's end and new Updates were re-issued and installed successfully.

I've searched around to see if this is a universal problem but as far as I can tell it seems I may be the only one who has had difficulty trying to install this Update. Otherwise I'm not having any problems with my system.

Any suggestions?

I have seen this problem on other forums. None had a satisfactory answer (besides the usual reinstall). Windows now fails to boot, after Win update automatically installed the update and insisting I restart. The update was Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.97.1113.0). Startup repair finds no problems. The BIOS recognizes the system drive and reports no errors.

I had done (before the update installed itself): repaired the "windows can't find the DVD drive" problem using the Microsoft "Fixit" for that problem it was successful). Also the external storage drive on a USB 3.0 controlled was dropped by the system at some point (hence my anxiety; all my backups, including a rather stale system drive image, are on that drive). I can access the Win 7 system drive with another OS on the machine (XP SP3).

Can I remove this update without starting Windows (win 7 64 bit)? Or even better get Win 7 working again so I can remove it? I did nothing else to the system before it restarted, since I wasn't even awake yet (this apparently happened at 4:30 AM according to the log). Here's the windows update log:

Hi there!

I just installed Vista Home Premium 64-bit and initiated a search for updates in Windows Update. The Windows Update itself needed to be updated first. But then it found 110 important updates, between 430,3 MB and 519,8 MB in size. But none of these is the Service Pack.

Is it necessary to install Service Pack 1 before installing Service Pack 2? Or are the SP1 updates included in the SP2?
Do I have to install these 110 updates, before installing any Service Pack? Or are these included in the Service Pack?
How do you know what updates are included in a given Service Pack? Is there some kind of list you can refer to?
I'm just trying to figure out how to get this straight, what to install, when, in what order, etc. I want a smooth operating system, I'm sick and tired of problems related to software application and Windows updates. This is my first reinstallation of Vista in a little bit over 1 year. It lasted long enough, before it broke down. So I had to reinstall it.

Thanks!

On the gaming PC that I'm fixing for my son's friend, the WEI fails to complete, and fails the "video" portion... could the old 9800 GTX 512MB video card be failing? Answer:WEI fails to complete, fails the "video" portion...

Flog it with FurMark, maybe?

That's an OpenGL test, so it may not expose DirectX issues, but I hope that it would cause a crash if the graphics card was beginning to fail.

I had that issue when I installed my new GPU. No fixes ever solved the issue until I performed a clean install and it got detected by WEI again.

But I wouldn't trust the WEI to guide performance. I mean, an old GT430 scores 7.9 randomly. Why.. because it's NVIDIA? =p

I get the message “Checking hardware integrity” or something similar. After a few seconds this message disappears and the computer just sit... Read more

Question: Update fails

I have updated all my computers to Win10 except one, I will keep it running 7.
I read about a 'convenience rollup package" that basically has all updates through April 2016.
I wanted to update my system and then create a system backup in case anything every happened.
However, when I started installing the update, it starts by saying "preparing update", but then errors out with "failure configuring windows updates. reverting changes. do not turn off your computer"
it eventually locks up, and I have to boot F8 and choose last working boot.

How can I figure out what is failing? Can I fix it so it will boot?

I have 4 updates for install (Win 7x64), when I install them and reboot the update hangs at 54%, then it rebooted and reverted changes and then stuck at Welcome screen for 30 plus minutes. I've done an SFC, tried to go back to a system restore prior to the updates and that fails.

I don't want to wait 30 minutes for my system to come up again.

I am having an issue installing KB3140743 on my Windows 10 computer. At the suggestion of another user I am starting a new thread in the hopes that I can get this issue resolved. (Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 KB3140743)

For reference here was the post I made:Hello Everyone,

I cannot seem to update my computer via KB3140743. I have tried doing this from Windows Update and the standalone installer. It appears that it is working but when I restart the computer it eventually says that the update failed to install and undoes whatever changes it has made. I am not sure where to look to get more information. The other update that came today did install (KB3139907).

I am running windows 10 Pro - 64-bit. If you want other system specs let me know. I never have had an issue with an update not installing since I upgraded.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
Things I have tried per recommendations:

sfc /scannow - issues were detected and repaired however this did not resolve the issueDism - Did the ScanHealth and RestoreHealth commands. They ran ok with no indications of issues but unfortunately did not solve the issue.

Thanks in advance for other suggestions or ways to solve this issue.

I'm helping a friend with her Toshiba laptop. It came with Windows 7 and she had updated it to windows 10 but could not update to the anniversary version.

The anniversary update repeatedly failed for me too. So I did a sfc/scannow which found errors and fixed them. I rebooted, turned off the windows firewall, and tried the anniversary update again. This time it started installing, warning me it will restart several times. But after a while it just shutdown and stayed shutdown. So after a long wait I restarted manually. It booted up with a message saying it was restoring the "previous version" which turned out to be windows 10.
How should I proceed?
Thanks.

I'm currently experiencing a slight windows update malfunction.
Actually, it's totally broken. Tells me there are new updates,
then i click instal, it starts and then,

Error
Code 80246008
An unknown error has ocurred bla bla bla

Windows help gives me some info about changing settings for
Background Intelligent Transfer Service in services.msc,
however, no such service exists on my pc.
Also Windows Event Log is mentioned but those settings are as recommended by microsoft.
Microsoft support offers no solution. I have not been able to find a manual install for these updates KB2418240 and KB951847
But anyways i think the underlying issue here is the BITS problem.

I'm running windows vista 32bit home basic and have recently had a zeroacces rootkit infection wich i succesfully removed, with help from this forum, though i'm not sure this has anything to do with it.

Any suggestions appreciated!

I have a valid copy of Windows 7 family pack. I have used for a while. Worked just fine until I recently had a HD failure, replaced HD and cloned it and had to reload Windows 7 from my valid Windows 7 install disk. I have a "confirmed" Genuine logo on my System page and have confirmed with Windows online that the product key is valid.

Issues: ~Windows update will not work. No update come in and updates errors out, saying the service is not running, when I check with the Windows Servcies, Windows update IS running
~Windows homegroup networking will not work, even though Windows "sees" the network..it will not join the homegroup with my password
~Today Windows online validation is saying my Product ID has expired? Why...my System page says I have a valid copy with a Windows Logo.
~ Again I have a valid "Family Pack" used on only 2 computers, even though I could have a thrid I do not. I reload from the valid install disk. Thats when my problems statred. I use Mcfee firewall. Turning off the firewall seemed NOT to help either.

I have no idea what to do. Asking if anyone has some help.

Thanks....

Some time ago I had a failure of Net Framework to install such that Microsoft Security Essentials no longer worked. I was unable resolve this and just let it go.
Now, I have updates failing at shutdown and boot time that delay the start by a couple of minutes and it's getting old.
Does anyone have suggestions?

I am having issues updating Mircrosoft .net Framework 1.1. This is happening on two machines. One is a laptop running Windows Vista Ultimate and the other is a desktop running Widows XP. I tried to uninstall it, but i just get an error saying: the installation source for this product is not available . . . I downloaded the .net Framework install from Microsoft's website and tried to install it. That did not work either.

Any ideas what needs to be done at this point?

Thank You

I've tried numerous times to install the windows 7 update:
KB3088195 (Security update for windows7)
It fails every time with error code: 80073701
I have windows update set to inform me of updates, but not install.
My computer is running win7 home preimum 64 bit

I tried running the windows update readiness tool (about a week ago)
It did not fix the problem.
I tried running the windows update troubleshooter(at least twice)
It tells me: error code 0x80070490 and service registration is missing or corrupt
and then claims all is fixed and repaired. But the intallation still fails.
p.s. Cant post the cbs.log file-its 940 meg!

I had a virus about a month ago, but
I am running kaspersky total security now and it claims I am clean.
Is it incompatible with this update?
Or is there some damage from the virus that kaspersky couldnt repair?
Any ideas?
