Display screen locked out by software issue

Question: Display screen locked out by software issue

While uninstalling some (what I believed to be) unnecessary programs, I noticed upon a restart that I had lost the NVIDIA audio control center icon from among my startup program icons on the taskbar. Not really knowing what I was doing, I inadvertently and carelessly installed an NVIDIA driver that turned out to be apparently a video driver because my display resolution deteriorated considerably.

In an attempt to correct that error I did a system restore, but that didn't work, so I tried to reset my screen resolution via the control panel/display/settings. I started by selecting the max resolution and planned on working backwards to get the optimum setting, but after I hit the apply button I got a blank screen except for a small window in the center of the screen which had a top line saying, Self Diagnostics. The middle line of text said, "Nonsupport mode, and the last line reads, "Check signal cable".

Here's the problem.......I'm frozen with that screen and can't escape from it. I tried both normal and safe mode restarts, but both resulted with this same screen (after the display showed the Windows logo and loading process indicator that it normally does). I then borrowed another monitor from a neighbor and got essentially the same result except that the message this time said, "Analog (signal) input....."Cannot display this mode.".......analog signal?....where did that come from and how do you change it?

My first question is.....am I going to be able to do anything to correct this problem since I don't have a usable display screen (to operate the GUI based Windows software)?
Or, secondly, is this a technician resolvable problem only?

Preferred Solution: Display screen locked out by software issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Display screen locked out by software issue

Is the text oversized due to vision issues?

In the Safe Mode screen, try both the "Use Last Known Good Configuation" and "Enable VGA Mode". If that fails, boot to some kind of Windows disk (it doesn't have to be XP, and enter Recovery Console so that you can run the following:

"chkdsk c: /r"

which will run an exhaustive check of the hard drive. It might take 20 minutes to 4 hours, depending.

Is the video card onboard, or add-on?
Post specs of the power supply (make, model & rated wattage output).
Can you boot to BIOS and view the monitor normally (white text on blue/black background)? Enter BIOS by tapping either the "del" or "F8" key immediately after power-on. (The key may vary depending on the computer.)

I have Dell Inspiron 5547 laptop (Touch Screen, 15 inches, 16 GB RAM and i7 4th Gen processor, Out of Warranty). Some days back, suddenly the display went dim and anything is hardly visible. After some initial investigation, the display chip (may be VGA or LED display chip) on the motherboard appears to be burnt out (may be due to voltage surge). Even the numbers printed on the chip is not readable because of which it is difficult for the local repairing shops to repair this problem.
I think Dell India Service Center doesn't deal with chip level repair and hence replacing motherboard is the only way they can fix this. This will be very costly (considering that the laptop is not under warranty so will have to pay for warranty extension, motherboard replacement and repair service) and time consuming.
Hence, to avoid all this I have come here to seek some assistance.
If there are anyone using the same laptop (Inspiron 5000 series 5547 Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM) then could you please take a clear picture of your laptop's motherboard or if you recognize the display chip then only that should be sufficient. In this case, I can read the chip related number from the image and try to repair it.
What are the charges for buying a warranty for the laptop, motherboard of my laptop and repairing charge?

Request your response and help.

Regards,
Rohit Kumar

Answer:Display Issue - Dim Display for Dell Inspiron 5000 (Model 5547) - Touch Screen Display with i7 4th Gen Processor and 16 GB RAM

You'll have to call Dell about the possibility of a warranty extension;  in the US, it's sometimes possible but will likely run over $300 -- or about what a board replacement would cost.
If you're getting video, the GPU is OK -- and it's more likely the power circuit to the backlight that's bad.  It'll likely cost as much to repair as to replace the board -- though you'll still be putting $300-400 into an out of warranty system, so replacing the system may be a better idea (if you do this, consider buying a 3-year warranty with the next system).

I started having issues yesterday, the day after I installed teamviewer a program that is on my iPad also to remotely control the laptop. At first the screen started freezing when I was in the middle of a Java game. So I restarted the laptop only to have it freeze at the main screen (after login).

The screen would freeze the display would change to a very low resolution (I think). So I kept restarting it only to repeat. Until eventually once past the windows logo the screen would turn black and blank. Sometimes the display would turn on black and blank and other times it would do that after the logo.

A few times I managed to get it to go into safe mode and I restored to a few days ago but it made no difference, I also tried many other things like changing some settings but nothing worked.

So after like 2 or 3 hours I Rolled back and disabled "nvidia quadro nvs 135m" (since I read it might be causing the issue and I should uninstall it which I couldn't), once I disabled it I restarted the computer and made it to the main screen without issues, and I could even load my game. I enabled it again And restarted the computer only to have the same issues so I disabled it again after finally getting into safe mode.

I don't know if it works fine now, I left it on at most for 5-10 minutes without any issues and I never actually logged into the game to see if it works.

I figured out that in my display settings instead of showing my main monitor it only sho... Read more

Hello, I have an Alienware 17 that began to have display issues since yesterday. None of what I found on already existing topics or the general internet seems to have worked or actually corresponded to what I have, so here I am asking for help.
Three faint lines have appeared on the upper third of my screen. They don't appear to be dead or stuck pixels, as they still display the correct color but are always lighter than what they should be except on pure black. One of them, the central one, is WAY more visible than the others, but they all sort of fade towards the screen's border, being more visible dead in the center.
I can provide a (albeit low quality) photo if needed.
I've connected another screen to the computer, and can comfirm that they do no appear on the two other displays tested. I've also tried different resolutions, updating all drivers drivers, and disabling my graphic cards, and the lines never change, so I've concluded that this is probably an issue on the screen or the connectors themselves? It seems to be there even before windows starts.

I don't really know what to do from here though. How do I go about fixing it? What could be the cause, even? Can I send the screen to repair, or is it not even at fault? My computer seems to think everything is fine as usual (except for the fact that my battery has been long dead, but since I never use it, I never replaced it), so I'm looking for smarter people to tell me what I need to know from... Go to the Dell Support page and see if there are any updates. Do not install any updates if they don't come from Dell. If you did install other updates from Intel or Nvidia, reinstall the Dell drivers for your exact model.

Hi,I've got a new HP Stream 11 - I bought it on February 18th, opened it and booted it up, let it install the updates it wanted to and then used it very sparsely as I wasn't ready to start using it yet. There were no issues with it. I started using it officially for work last week - I used it for 2 days and then this past Sunday I turned it on and something weird had happened to the screen.Any ideas? I've talked to tech support with the company I bought it from (not HP) and they're clueless and told me I'm going to have to chat with HP. I've no idea how to describe this on the phone so I just wanted to post it here first and see if anyone has any ideas? If I take a screenshot of the screen it doesn't show up - the screen looks normal. This is what has happened

Every now and then my screen display is forced off center (the picture only fills about three-quarters of the screen and shifts to the left) when my monitor resumes from standby or being idle, could it be a graphics driver issue? I have an NVIDIA GeForce 6100 graphics card installed on a 64-bit version of Windows 7. If it is a graphics driver issue should I download the latest driver from Windows Update or www.nvidia.com?

Answer:lcd screen display issue

a general rule of thumb is to ALWAYS, ALWAYS get the latest drivers. it could also be a refresh rate issue.

I downloaded and installed a PDF software named PDFMate for converting my images to PDF file. It was easy and my Antivirus scanner didn't object or detect any threats (unlike some other JPG to PDF converter software I tried).

The problem was that the PDFMate screen display was a dog's breakfast. Text was overwriting icons the BUILD button was half missing. I have searched the Internet, but seems not have the solution. Somebody else met such problem before? What can I do to make it right?

Answer:software screen display like a dog's breakfast on my computer

when i first set the monitor up the desktop area displayed perfectly within the boundaries of the monitor. Now however the the screen display area does not fit with the boundaries. I have tried changing the screen resolution [1280x1024] and refresh rate [72htz]

How can I get the display area centred and configured to sit within the monitor boundaries

What was the original resolution (before you changed it)?

Can you please double check the monitor model number? (Check it on the monitor, not on the receipt!) The LG should be able to handle 1280x1024; if it doesn't, I'm wondering if you might have something different.

Hello, I recently purchased a x220 and I am very happy with it. I turned off  "sleep when closed" for some reason and then accidently left it in my bag for like 15-20mins. It was hot but didn't really smell like burnt plastic or anything. However I feel as if the screen is harder to get at the right brightness. It feels as if I have to get a very precise angle to view the screen at the proper brightness/clarity. However it is hard for me to say if there is any difference to before as this happened only a week after using it. It could be acting just fine and I am just paranoid so my question is has there been any issues that have come up like this before? Has overheating in a bag or something ever caused the LCD screen to function just slightly improperly? Thank you,

Answer:x220 got hot, and now screen display clarity issue?

Well, first of all, I hope you're talking about the basic, TN LCD display, not the upgraded "Premium HD" IPS LCD screen. Anyway, personally I feel like it's so easy to be paranoid about screen quality and possible minor screen damage or defects, but Lenovo has owned up to the "ghosting" issue, so things can really happen sometimes. In your case, I wouldn't worry. Provided you are indeed talking about the basic TN screen and not the IPS, it sounds like your screen's viewing angles are performing normally. For some extra confidence, the Notebookcheck review of the X220 says their test unit got so hot under the sun that the plastic began to warp and bow, and even then, they didn't mention any screen degredation. And for that matter, isn't the X220 Mil-spec tested for heat? http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-ThinkPad-X220-IPS-Subnotebook.55639.0.html

[System specs below]

I recently installed a more recent video driver to my laptop. In the middle of playing Spore the nVidia display driver died, and recovered (the infamous nvlddmkm driver failure)... but multiple times in a row. After a reboot which I thought may sort things out, things got very strange...

- the vista loading screen prior to the login screen is totally grey, with some darker horizontal stripes across it.
- the mouse cursor (both the arrow and the animated blue 'processing' circle) looks like it has horizontal transparent stripes through it.
- most windows have refresh issues. For example, scrolling down a notepad document doesn't refresh the window - I have to do something like minimize then maximize the window for it to refresh.
- anything that uses 3D will lock up the system. It looks as if nvlddmkm fails and recovers.

I tried going into Safe Mode by setting safe boot on msconfig, and that was an incredibly bad idea. After the restart _everything_ was grey, from boot through to reboot nothing could be seen. I later managed to uncheck safe boot in msconfig totally blind, which was a bit of an effort. I have since restored the original factory nVidia video driver which came with the laptop when it was new, but the same issues.

So I was wondering perhaps has the base vga display driver been corrupted? As far as I know vga.sys is used in Safe Mode, and probably what's used prior to the nVidia drivers being loaded - which may explain the grey sc... Read more

I seem to have broken my laptop. I was trying to hook it up to a tv with an HDMI cable. Following the advice on a website I went to "Adjust screen resolution" to try and find the tv as another device and enable that. However there was no other device, so I decided to play around a bit to see if I could get something to , this was my mistake. On one of the drop down menus under the resolution menu I managed to select something which created a second device in the box showing how many displays you have. I was pretty sure it wasn't the tv but thought I'd keep playing around and on one of the other drop down menus I selected something like "expand across both displays"...said soemthing like that, and then that's when the laptop went blank, still a backlight coming from it but nothing but black on screen. I restarted the laptop, the screen showed up the windows starting stuff then the desktop flickered on for barely a second then it went back to blank screen. I can only guess I've created an imaginary device with obviously no display and this is what it is showing now when it's blank.
Hope this makes sense to someone else, not sure it does to me, I really shouldn't mess about with technology.

My Y470 has a very dim screen/display that is on its brightest setting, but still looks half as bright as my HP that I am still using until I resolve this issue. It arrived this way out of the box. Updating drivers and changing settings did not help. I'm running Windows 8.1. Today, the scrollbar arrows in Internet Explorer 11 and some of the navigation icons on the Start screen appeared as rectangles instead of arrows or the proper icons. Searching online, I came across this post, which matches shows the same problem and details a fix that involves replacing the Segoe UI font. I've done this, and the icons are now back, with one exception. The small arrow in a circle that appears at the bottom left of the Start screen and allows you to access All Programs is still appearing as a rectangle. It functions fine, but it's really annoying! Can anyone suggest a way to fix this?

Answer:Icons on start screen display issue

I ran System Restore and restored to a time before some updates were installed yesterday, and all is now well. Things were fine this morning after the updates last night, so by trial and error, I've traced the problem to Bitstream Font Navigator. If I run it and use it to add or remove any fonts from my system (which I did this morning), then the icons go messed up again, and I have to use System Restore again. At least I know what caused it, now!

I have an ASUS x750ja laptop running Windows 8.1.

The problem: From startup (including bios logo), the screen briefly displays what it should, then goes black. Bios logo, then black. If I enter the bios, it goes black at the first screen. It'll flash the Windows logo, then go black.

I've hooked it to a secondary monitor via HDMI. It seems like a hardware error, but whenever the monitor gets a signal to refresh, it flickers back on. For example, when I have it hooked to the external display, and configure it to extend the display, the laptop screen turns on for a second.

Furthermore, the brightness keys still function.

Within a day or two of use, the screen began to flicker upon booting up or waking from sleep mode, and it seems that the longer the laptop was in sleep/off mode, the worse the flickering is upon booting up. I've been trying to figure out what's going on, I've updated all drivers and such from the Dell support page, but nothing seems to fix this issue. Does anyone know what's going on? I'm certainly bummed out to have run into this issue within just days of buying the product. I've uploaded a youtube video to try and show what's going on.

Answer:Dell 7559 screen/display flickering issue

Hi DukeBaluk,
I’d suggest that you update BIOS on your computer to check for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, then download the BIOS from BIOS section onto the system and install it.
http://dell.to/18r60nI
Also, we will have to perform the ‘LCD BIST’ (Built in Self-test) on the computer. Please follow the steps mentioned below to run the “LCD BIST’.

Turn of the computer.
Press and hold down the ‘D’ key on the keyboard and press the Power button.
You will see different colors on the LCD screen. Please check if the issue reoccurs on the screen.

In addition, please connect the system to an external monitor and check if the issue reoccurs.

The screen is not all black, instead, pixels are washed out, leaving a halo in a few spots on the laptop screen, when the computer was initially started from the box. The first one was shipped and I assumed it may have been handled poorly and now the similiar with the second one. I will follow up with a call to HP, I wanted to know if the community has any screen quality issues?

Hello, I am not 100% sure where to post this. But as my computer is a Windows Vista, I'll try here.

When I attempt to edit videos using Cyberlink Powereditor, the videos appear black with working audio.
Same scenario happens if I compress videos with WMM, and then attempt to watch them. Black screen, clear audio.
I've had this problem for quite a while.
Attempts I've done to fix: Codecs, different media players, and updating graphic driver.

Answer:[SOLVED] Display Issue, Black screen with Audio

Problem solved. If anyone else is experiencing the same problem, my graphic card is "Nvidia geforce 9600 gt"
I simply "rolled" it back to an earlier version instead of "updating" it.
Then it didn't work, so I reinstalled it manually by using nvidia's download page.
Now it works perfectly, and I can edit anything in cyberlink powereditor.

Hi all,

Upon upgrading to w10 I encountered the black screen issue. When plugging in another screen to the HDMI adapter on my laptop the display appears working perfectly. The laptop screen only shows anything during boot, as soon as the system starts it sits with a black screen.

If i disable the onboard gfx and reboot the screen will display on the laptop, however it is using "microsoft basic display" and not the onboard gt 555m

I have up to date drivers from g force, I have up to date drivers from intel. I am at a loss as to how to solve this.

When another monitor is connected it works absolutely perfectly. The issue is it just wont pick up the laptop screen at all.

Edit - The issue seems to be the GT 555 graphics card. The onboard is the one that's actually detected and working however this is only as an external monitor not with the laptop display. GT 555 is updated via the Nvidia app and says it's W10 ready, yet it's not functioning in any capacity it seems.

Answer:Display adapter not being recognised, black screen issue.

Hello Folks,

Trying to fix my friends laptop but running into a weird issue.

Using Windows Vista Home Premium
Graphics Card is Standard Intel 945

When booting windows normally I get a solid blue screen (not BSOD) after the login screen. Boots into safemode normally.

Clean for viruses/malware

Tried the following:

1) Plugged in an external monitor (VGA Port) and it brought up a display window on pc showing it was currently in multiple monitor mode (still blue screen in backround). Blue Screen on monitor as well. Switched to Single Display and now just blue screen on laptop display. Connected to TV with S-Video. Blue screen on TV as well.

2) Changed Resolution as well as 16 bit/32 bit color. No Effect.

3) Uninstalled/Reinstalled Graphics Driver. No Effect.

4) Tried creating guest account and logging in normally. Won't get past login screen. Just continuously loading.

Any suggestions?
Thank You in Advance for any ideas.

Using the following link's content to gauge my contrast level on my brand-new x230t, my computer's vaunted display is actually very inadequate. I can't distinguish either end of the spectrum, no matter how I adjust my contrast using the Intel graphics and media control panel (why it won't let me set it any lower than "40," is puzzling to me). http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/contrast.php#colorbands.png I have a former ASUS G50, with the same display (albeit it larger, with a Nvidia graphics card), as well as a Droid Razr and an ASUS Transformer Prime with smaller displays (just slightly) . My laptop: Toshiba Satellite Pro PSPA6A-028017 with Nvidia GeForce Go 7900GS

Ok, here's the story. I turned my laptop on a week ago and the screen was blank. I plugged in an external monitor via AVI and tried Fn+F5 but nothing. Upon restart the external monitor worked. When I tried to toggle displays the external monitor turned off and I was left with a blank screen - I'd obviously switched back to laptop display but, working blindly, I couldn't work out how to get the external monitor to fire up again. Fn+F5 did nothing.

At that point I called Toshiba for warranty support (Onsite, Next Business Day). They had a technician with new monitor/screen onsite the next day (after a few calls from me to follow up). He replaced the screen but had some trouble getting the display up and running. He finally managed to login to Windows Safe Mode and get the screen running but only on 800x600. He updated Bios and drivers. He was then able to up the resolution to 1024x768. Any higher and the screen would go blank again.

At that point we plugged in an external monitor via VGA. It worked but the technician could not get the each display to run on individual resolution. It has him stumped and he acknowledged that things still weren't right. Later, after the technician left, I managed to get both displays working and each set to their own resolution. However I still could not connect the external monitor via DVI (only VGA). I was at least temporarily back to work!

From the sounds of it, it sounds like the VGA Board has a problem.

Have you tried reinstalling the nVidia Display Driver? (use the one on the Toshiba website)

ps. What Operating System is installed? Is it installed from the Toshiba Recovery Disc? Or a Generic Windows Disc?

So, I purchased my uncle's old computer, but he doesn't remember the serial number and they through the box away.  I noticed that it would go to the black screen once powered and then the caps lock would flash 1 time and then pause for 3 secs and flash again at the 4th second.  I have removed the harddrive from the laptop and scanned the harddrive for viruses and checked to see if any problems.  He had viruses, but I cleaned those off and placed the harddrive back in the system.       I wanted to know if there is a chart or anything that I can go by to fix this issue?  I wanted to fix it up and donate to the student in Africa who is going to college.  I purchased my uncle's because he had received a new computer for a holiday (Father's Day) and it was nothing wrong with it, when I first talked to him and he got a new computer.  Help me please and thank you so much for the insight!

Good day!

After installing the latest update for Windows 10 (Version 1607, OS Build 14393.222), the screen just went black! I noticed that I'm already logining in windows from the light of the fingerprint but I couldn't see anything on screen.

I tired to format everyting in the PC and reinstall Windows back again through entering the Recovery Screen. I was able to get the screen back but this time the brightness was full and I couldn't change the level of it. I did some search about this issue and then I manually update the display adapter (Intel HD Graphics 520) from the device manager. After this update the screen went off again!
I then tried to reinstall windows again and I connect my laptop to HDMI port. I was able to view everyhing in the extended screen but when I project to the PC screen I don't get anything.

I disabled the Intel HD Graphics 520 driver and by doing so I was able to see the screen back in PC. So it seems it's a driver issue. I tried to uninstall the driver and reinstall it again with the lateset version (Version 21.20.16.4505) but when I enable it the screen goes black again.

Now the display adapter is disabled and I can't change anything in the screen settings or control the brightness. What is the solution?
Also the screen goes black while browsing some sites with malicious content.Yesterday was going through a site
 I encountered black screen.
What is the solution?

I have an x201 that automatically changes its contrast ratio at seemingly random timepoints.  When this occurs, the screen washes out and becomes unreadable for a short period of time (maybe 5 seconds) and then steps back up to the normal contrast setting. Does anyone know of a fix to this behavior?  I've read some other messages about similar behavior, although these individuals appear to have mislabeled the issue as a change in brightness.  This is not the problem on my machine.  The brightness stays constant while the contrast ratio changes (i.e., goes to a very low contrast setting, making the screen almost completely a bland off-white color). Thanks in advance for any suggestions...

So my screen is half displaying, its a compressed version of the full screen.
The right half of the screen is lit, but all black, and right after the halfway point on the left side there is a strip of image then a strip of black before seeing the compressed image.

The output works fine to an external. I know its not the video card. I reinstalled the updated Bios, and i tried using powerstrip.
I'm pretty sure its a software issue as in system devices my display is shown as Digital flat panel with a max res of 1024 x 768 but the native is 1200 x 800 and it used to be called something else like toshiba laptop internal monitor.

No drivers have fixed the issue and i can't find a similar problem anywhere!
Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

It used to do this, and a restart would sometimes fix it, but now its just stuck like this.
If you need pics i can take screen shots later, but i dont have it available right now...

Answer:Satellite A105-4094 display issue - only half screen

I had a similar problem with my previous laptop.

Does it happen in the BIOS and at the Toshiba logo as well? If it does, that would rule out a software/driver problem since Windows wouldn't be running at the time.

If it happens in the BIOS as well:
-Try resetting the BIOS to its defaults

If it happens only in Windows:
-Update the display drivers.
-Disable extended/clone desktop in the Display Settings in Windows.

most dells have a recovery section on the hard drive which puts it back to how it left the factory. Backup your stuff before doing it as it wipes everything from the hard drive.

Hey there,

Yesterday my 2.5 year old laptop had an error.

I was working in excel, when suddenly the screen shifted out of focus.
I saw everything on the screen echoed some pixels to the upperleft, and moving the mouse over a shifted area turned this area back to normal, however this also shifted the area where the mouse no longer was.

I thought I should reboot my laptop, but then it wouldn't start. I have tried rebooting in safe mode and recovery modes and saw several blue screens flash by. I have inserted the 2 recovery discs that came with the laptop, but it cannot finish installation.

What concerns me is that even if I get a recovery disc to work, the screen might still be shifted. Do you think this might be a hardware error, a cable breaking somewhere? Or is it a software error somehow? Or perhaps it was a software error leading to a hardware malfunction?

I'd like to install an operating system again, but if the screen has a hardware issue it might be more worthwhile to buy a new laptop all together.
Please advise if you have any idea on what could cause this, thanks in advance!

Kind regards! ^_^

Answer:Is it a hardware and/or software issue when the screen suddenly shifts?

Hi mate?

Do you mean, the notebook cannot boot up, neither using the preinstalled OS nor using the recovery disk???

Are you able to go to BIOS?
Press F2 at the beginning in order to access the BIOS?.

But if this will not be possible then I would assume an hardware failure is responsible for this issue? maybe something wrong with graphic chip?

This might explain the strange display issues before notebook crashed?..

Laptop screen flickering? - YouTube <-- Cellphone vid of the screen flicker

So a year or so ago I had to send my laptop off to Staples Business Depot where I got it to have my screen fixed. It would randomly start flickering black and loseing picture before coming back. Sometimes It wouldnt come back for a few minutes or at all until shutdown.

After staples was done looking at it they just backed up and reset my laptop. This is what was said:

"Comprehensive hardware test performed. No trouble found with testing.

Video issue was only recreated inside Windows & tested ok outside of Windows. May have been a driver conflict / software incompatibility

A complementary factory re-installation was completed to ensure the system is performing to manufacturer design.

Repair completed and final testing passed. External cleaning performed. Returning to store for Customer pick-up"

And honestly that fixed it for the time being but now the issue is starting again. Same thing, has only happened once or twice but now I have no warrenty left to have it repaired.

Thus far it has only happened while I am on my desktop or using google chrome. It hasnt happened while playing any games yet but it did previously when the issue first started.

Hi all, over the last few days I've seen a bit of flickering on my laptop screen. I have a 24" external screen attached via HDMI also but it is not exhibiting issues. I had my screen replaced last month due to a few too many dead pixels, so just trying to highlight if this is a screen problem or a software problem.. as it's unclear to me.

Overview of issue;
- Initially the grey overlay would flicker on/off very quickly. This has happened over last 3 or 4 days, but it didn't persist
- This morning I noticed heavy flickering and then the grey overlay/artefacts seemed to just remain on the about 7/8th of the laptop screen. The whole screen was never affected.
- I tried doing a print-screen, and it printed my screens normally, the grey overlay/artefacts did not appear in my print-screen.
- I tried to leave extended desktop mode, and switched my display scaling on/off - the problem persisted.
- I restarted my laptop and on the sign-in screen the problem was still there
- I restarted it again and then disabled my external monitor once I got into windows, and my laptop screen came back
- I re-enabled my external screen, noticed the same flickering, and disabled it again.
- Laptop screen is still back and hasn't flickered since i disabled the external monitor.

Took a few photos of it when it happened... any thoughts would be great. Bit bamboozled by this one..

Hi,

Ive had the Acer 3003 wlmi for 4 years now (running XP) - ive always had issues with a flickering screen which is the first issue. Second one started about 2 years ago - the laptop began overheating. Sometimes it gets so extreme that Im unable to touch the mousepad or have the machine on my lap. If any intensive application is run (ie, malware scans, dvd, youtube stream etc), the machine overheats powers off.

Last week, this happened and so I switched on the machine as per usual again - I was taken to screen where it recommends safe mode (3 different options), a normal mode, or a last known settings mode - if I click on any of these options, the machine powers off, then loads up again - its just a cycle now and I can't get past it.

Ive been able to access the BIOS screen, and have also taken out the cooling fan to clean.

I have mechanical failure warranty and they are scheduled to pick the machine up for evaluation in the next day or so - they have warned me that if it turns out to be a software issue or virus, then I will be liable for charges. Obviously I dont want it to come to that - what is the likelihood of this being the case? I dont have the system restore disc anymore so am unable to run that.

Or is it a hardware failure taking all things into consideration?

Suggestions/advice are greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I recently noticed that my desktop display feature appears to be locked. I'm able to get a wallpaper from online if i want, but cannot use any other options like browsing for pics within "my pictures" or selecting from the choices of already included desktop backgrounds. Even the options for "stretch, center, tile" are locked. I tried right-clicking a pic and selecting set as background and that didn't work. I also tried right clicking images then going through picture tasks, set as background - which also didn't work. I'm using Windows XP pro with service pack 2.

Answer:How to turn off the display if W7 is locked?

Just put the lid down.  In power options, configure it to do nothing when you close the lid.  The display will go off when the lid is down, no matter what setting.  Default is to sleep the PC.  If you don't want that, just set it to do nothing.

Hello,

I have come across a new problem and I am having trouble locating any specific information on fixing it. There is a series of problems. The first was a red circle with a white X in the middle advertising Anti-Spyware. Cleaned that up with Super Anti Spyware. When this problem started, the background was changed to solid black with a red warning box in the bottom right that had a message about the computer being infected, need anti...etc, etc. Fixed that with a SmitFraud registry merger. The remaining problems are that I cannot change my display options to anything but solid colors. The menu of windows backgrounds is locked out and will not respond to anything. The other issue is an error message on startup that says "cli.exe - Application Error" Then there is a big red cirlce with a white 'X' in it, next to which appears "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc000007b). Click on OK to terminate the application." I have been searching for hours to find a solution. I'm sure I'll find some help here.

Thanks,
Kevin

I am operating Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2

I've been using my p7-1126s computer with an nvidia 7600GT video card for years, and all was well.  Recently, I wanted to try the graphics ability of the AMD A8-3800 apu with radeon 6550D graphics.  I got a single link DVI-D cable and attached it to my Dell IN2030M monitor.  However, when I boot up, the display is locked at 640x480 resolution, the change tab is grayed out, and the monitor is detected as a "generic non-pnp monitor". I've never updated the apu since I bought it 5 years, but I did so now.  I went to AMD and updated the graphics drivers.  I went to HP and updated the Support Assistant and the updates it offered.  I went back to AMD and even updated the chipset drivers.  And of course I'd already checked for any windows updates. After installing everything it actually booted up in normal resolution.  I used the computer for a few hours and then shut it down.  When I booted up again today it was back to 640x480.  I tried everything I could think of to fix it, but nothing worked.  I then did a system restore before all the updates and went through it all again.  This time, it didn't work. Still locked at 640x480. I found a google cached HP page here:http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:8EYjLfkOO4wJ:support.hp.com/in-en/document/c031... ...which says: When computers with early versions of Hibiscus or Holly motherboards are connected to certain 20-inch monitors us... Today, while restarting from hibernation, my laptop (Dell N7010  running Windows 7 (64-bit)) was showing a blue screen (as in "of death") with several words shown in a large white font. I only saw it briefly then password screen appeared. The words I saw on the blue screen said "Your Computer is(?) Locked". Since I successfully used it (still am), I put the message in the back of my mind.

Several hours later, I put my laptop into hibernation again. When it came out, the password screen said that my computer was locked (attachment: "lock.gif"). That reminded me that I saw that this morning, too. But with no problem signing in, I had ignored it. Also, I watched closely but saw no blue screen with big "Computer Locked" message after this second hibernation.

I don't know what to make of this.

In between those hibernations, I Googled "booting windows 7 i saw blue screen with 'your computer has been locked' but my computer is NOT LOCKED" .

Bleeping was near the top of the hits. But Malwarebytes wouldn't let me go to the first hit because "Malwarebytes blocked a suspected bad URL or an unwanted program." Here's the URL: https://www.pcrisk.com/download-reimage; also, see attached "mal.gif".

So there's THAT on top of the blue screen with "Your Computer ... Locked" and twice finding "Locked" above the password box.

I'm speechless.

I have a POS software which is hardware locked. The software is written in VB and the database is MS SQL server. I want to be able to unlock this software so I can install the POS in a newer computer because my old computer is about to die. The vendor doesn't seem to exist anymore, so I can't go to them.

Answer:Hardware locked software

I suspect you'll have to get a different package. I've had this same problem many years ago.

Hello,Since few days , I am facing some weird problem with my Lenovo SL410. The Display is showing one black strip and dipsplay is entirely moved to left. Even When I am trying to enter the BIOS setup same issue is seen. But rest of the functioning of Laptop is very normal. But if I keep my laptop unused , for one instance , display shows normal. I ran every Lenovo dignostic steps and everything is passed properly. I don't think this is driver issue else BIOS shouldn't have shown this issue. But surprisingly , after 2-3 days if I don;t use my laptop , for first boot-up everything looks normal.I even tried updating BIOS which did not help me. Any clue where is the issue ?

Answer:Issue with SL410 Display- It shows one black strip and display moved to left.

Since few days I have my Thinkpad not getting starting up. I did find some  bits and pieces information in forums, but would look to confirm if it would need a motherboard replacement, which is a costly affair and I really am not sure if I should go for it or better go for a new laptop. It is a 15"  T42P (type 2373 N49) having 2GB RAM, 128 MB ATI Mobility FIREGL T2 and a 9 cell battery. I got it from a reseller in ebay about 10 months back (I got an additional 1gb RAM while i got from him) and till now I am more than impessed by the system's performance and I admire it a lot ; very good power for my use and great display. Recently (before this issue appeared) I had noticed heating in the underside and also near the touchpad, which was slightly above than what I used to feel in the past. And one day while a video was being played it all went frozen and got hung. later it wouldnt boot up too. Just before it went frozen, there were some grainy lines/area (covering quite some portion in the screen) giong on and off. A few days before this incident when the laptop was used to play movies kept on a bed and during then I had felt some over heating too. I now regret this because I do think- that might have caused some overheating to the unit because of the underside vents getting no air circulation while kept on a bed or similar surface which is not firm. I took it to a local service shop-he was able to boot it up and run it for some time, while pressing the back.... Answer:T42P Display problem / overheating? / ATI display processor issue?

replacing the GPU??? It is soldered onto the motherboard, and the problem with video display is not the GPU itself, but rather the GPU is coming loose from the motherboard, so i don't see how the GPU replacement is solving the issue. There is also the chance that the overheating in GPU due to improper ventilation that is causing problem. i will be highly suspicious of what the person says (probably trying to fool you). The GPU used in the T42p is extremely rare, and i would highly doubt that he can obtain an example from anywhere, these laptop GPU are NOT something you can get from some supplier just like that.Message Edited by lead_org on 05-25-2009 10:25 AM

I was cleaning around my laptop and it stared freezing up so I restarted, though it's not a common problem with my computer. When it restarted it came up with a no boot device screen so I tried it again and first a overheating screen came up but said the problem was now resolved, press enter to load setup. So I pressed enter and it brought up the startup screen but never completely loaded, stuck on the loading screen. Now every restart it comes up with the same. I've tried a couple of things like resetting boot to original settings, tried to make sure the hard drive didn't come unplugged but my hard drive is like glued on or something so I tried making sure it was connected but couldn't really check it. Tried a couple other things but nothing seems to be working, search online and youtube and still nothing, please help.

I have a problem on my mom's PC. She was online looking for some information and then this dialog box came up about the computer being locked. I looked online about this issue and did not find much that was useful. I set up this PC for her and we did not set any kind of password. I use passwords on the PC's that I have and have never experienced this issue.

She said that she got it to go away by just hitting enter. The username was owner and she did not type a password. She also said that internet explorer never went away this box was overlaid on it.

On Windows XP, I know how to lock my computer manually. When doing that, it locks your computer by setting the screen to the Welcome screen, where you need to login to the username and enter the password.

The weirdest thing about it, is the way it locks. It is not locking by going to the welcome screen - like it does manually. Instead, the wallpaper stays in the background, but a box overlays it saying stuff like 'this computer is in use and has been locked' and requires me to enter my username and password to unlock it.

Why is it automatically locking? How can I get it to go away?

Thanks.

Answer:This computer is in use and has been locked issue

Could be in the screensavers section. Right click on an empty spot on the desktop, click on Properties from the menu, click on the ScreenSavers tab, uncheck "Password Protected" if it's checked when you get there.

Hi Friends,
I did a really stupid thing. I loaded a security system on my pc (winmagic) and I failed to write downse the password. I was so sure I would remember it. I did not. I can only get to the screen that asks for the password. Or I can hit f1 and get to some screens I do not really understand about booting from a cd.
I want to wipe off the hard drive assuming that will wipe of the security system that has locked up my hard drive. HOW do i do that? I'd like to wipe the HD and reuse it and then properly install the security software.
I read about dban but that would mean I could "see" the prompts and the wizard. All I can see is the page that asks for my password.
Any and all help gratefully received.

So I have the MyBook essential ver 2.0, and it came with WD SmartWare and the option to lock the drive with a password.

I set the password a few times but it seemed buggy and never worked.

I reboot the drive now, and suddenly it's locked, and it's asking for my password. I think "okay no biggie" and type in my password.

It's the wrong one.

I try more combinations. None of them work. The only way I can use my external hard drive again is to wipe it and all the data on it. That is not an option since I already have files on it that I don't want to lose.

I do not know why this suddenly happened and I'm coming here even though I already know my chances are slim to none I'll be able to fix this easily.

Western Digital says that if you "forget" (In my case the password software was screwy so it probably set my password wrong) Western Digital cannot retrieve your password and you must wipe your drive to use it.

Does anybody know if it's possible to crack the password somehow, someway?

Please help =(

In accordance with the Forum Rules, assistance in getting around Passwords is not allowed here. This is not to be mean spirited, but we can not confirm that the password was not set by someone else and the person(s) requesting assistance is indeed the owner of the System/Drive that is password protected. This is not saying we don't believe you, but that we can not confirm it.

In trying to get the T40 to work with external display I installed updated ATI Display Driver off the Lenovo website.  After rebooting I have a gray screen.  I can get into Bios.  What do I change in Bios to be able to get back to windows and uninstall the new driver?  Thanks, Gai

Answer:T40 Display Issue after installing new ATI Display Driver

you would need to get into your safe mode? can you do that? In the event you can't, you may want to take the hdd out and use a usb enclosure to transfer any files you have on the hdd into another computer. Then put the hdd back and try to go into rescue and recovery partition by pressing the blue IBM/Access key on the keyboard during laptop initial startup, this should take you to your recovery console and then select to recover to previous backed up condition or full recovery to factory condition. If that don't work, then you would need to reinstall the OS using an aftermarket OS disc from scratch.

I have a small network that I admin (3 desktops, 2 laptops). We have been having problems. Bear with me. I will start from the beginning of problems in case the origin of this sp2 glitch is other than on this desktop.

All systems are running Sygate personal firewall with identical permissions. Nod32, automatic updates run, weekly scans. Microsoft Anti-spyware on all systems. Spybot and/or Adaware run regularly on all systems.

Desktop #1 had a HDD crash. Replaced HDD. Reconfigured it to work on network. Installed XP SP1 then immediately updated to SP2. Reinstalled software, printers, set up sharing, etc. All seemed to work fine.

THEN...
We had a DLink VPN broadband router linked to a Linksys G-band wireless router from our DSL modem. We began losing internet connection which turned out to be the DLink failing. I have disconnected it (disabling our VPN, which was not needed at this time) and set everything up through the Linksys wireless router. Internet connection returned.

THEN...
Added new HP 6540 printer to Desktop #3, (running sp2) Set it to share over network.

Desktop #1 and #3 were communicating well with each other.

#2 and laptop #1 were communicating well with each other.

Laptop #1 needed sp2 to resolve some subspooler errors in network setup to make it communicate with D-tops #1, #3. sp2 install smooth and successful, no data loss, no reconfigurations necessary.

Created new workgroup and put all D-tops and laptops on that new workgroup. minimal network functi... Read more

i've contracted a trojan virus and during running of combofix.exe, it got hung up due to presence of pev.cfxxe. After several unsuccessful attempts to kill that process, i eventually had to stop combofixe.exe and then i could remove both pev.cfxxe and NirCmdC.cfxxe from the c:/combofix folder. I found the combofix log and it is attached.

then, i ran the MGtools.exe utility. it ran successfully and i've attached that log as well (mglogs.zip).

i just want to check to see if there's anything still haunting my computer, especially since combofix.exe didn't fully execute to completion.

many thanks for any help you can lend.

I am currently on a different computer than the one where I am locked out of the Administrator account.

Less than 3 weeks ago, I bought a new laptop that came with Windows 10 installed. When I finally set up the new laptop and tried out Windows 10 for the first time, I was annoyed at the whole thing with Windows blocking some programs from being installed and a lot of other annoying prompts. This is when I found out about a higher level of Administrator access known as a Super Administrator to avoid most of these prompts, and install programs without being blocked by Windows. So what I did created a new user account with the Command Prompt and gave it Super Administrator access without setting a password. Once I logged into my new user account, I deleted all of the other user accounts on my computer, since I had no need for the other user accounts (such as the Guest account).

The real trouble happened when my computer crashed and experienced a BSOD. After the computer rebooted from the BSOD, I found out that I could not log into the Administrator account because it prompts for a password, but I never set up a password for the account. Inputting no password does not work. I am not sure how a password was set up on the Administrator account without my knowledge and whether this might have been related to my BSOD crash.

I have made an attempt to get back into my only user account, but nothing has worked so far. All of the built-in Windows diagnostic tools have failed ... Read more

Having the Pavilion 15-n031sg for more than 2 years meanwhile, since 3 days it's almost impossible to log on to Windows 10 (x64).The reason is that both CTRL keys seem to be locked, which blocks any futher keystrokes.Using the on-screen keyboard reveals that both left and right keys are marked in orange, means Windows assumes they are locked.I tried disabling pinch zoom, uninstalling Synaptics touch pad software, reinstalling PS2 keyboard driver, updating to the latest 2016 BIOS, making sure that sticky keys is switched off... all in vain.I also could reproduce that with external Keyboards, both USB and/or PS2 the problem is also there, so I doubt that is a hardware issue. At least it shows that it shouldn't be a dirty key or a fluid issue etc. Let me add here that I am treating my devices like a raw egg, means there was definitely nothing spilled into the keyboard. The only means I found to work around that is starting the on-screen keyboard, click once at the right CTRL key and then click twice at the left one. That will make most keys working again, although the F-keys still won't work.Since this issue is, according to the various posts on that issue, chasing HP notebooks since at least 4 years already:What by all means is the solution please???

Hello,
My system is asking for a password when it initially starts up. This isn't a new thing for me, due to going into set up (f12 @ startup) and setting the password a couple of years ago. However when I went to undo that by going from setup f12>secutity> reset password, the instructions directed me to enter my current password then leaving the "enter new password" and "Confirm new password" entries blank. From what I understood, this would cause the system to no longer prompt me to enter my password...Well it still does, the only thing is that it doesn't recognize my password anymore. Now I'm locked out. After the first three times of trying, it now says, everytime I try to enter something, that the system is in locked out! must power down...(that isn't verbatim, but close)
Your suggestions of how to get out of this would help me out greatly! Thanks in advance!~

Hi,
I took in my laptop hp g6-2138 sa for a thermal service and to fit a new keyboard to my local repair shop. There was minor water damage to the keyboard (I mean a few drops, and it happened 8 months ago, the shop looked on the motherboard and said there was no corrosion.)
It was returned Friday and seemed to work but on Saturday it stopped working. The screen showed no display but had a backlight. Took it back to the shop incase there was a loose connection, they found that the connector slot had shorted and melted on the motherboard video connector.
Now this seems like they've messed up, there's never been an issue with the display.
Do I have to pay for a repair or is it their job to sort it?
Any advice would be welcome.c

Answer:Laptop repair issue, display connector issue

As it was working when you took it in then I would think its up to them to repair.

So First off, I am sure most of you who are looking at this will think it is an easy fix, and trust me I wish it was. I have spent the entire day before this post searching for common fixes to issues, with no luck.

First off, here is the scenario:

I went go get on my PC that has been running flawless since December 2010, and the first thing I notice is it came back from sleep or idle, whatever you want to call it. This seems to happen now and then and I believe it happens because windows installed an update over the night (Wednesday 2/27/13). Normally this is no big deal, I go about my way and all is fine.

So I noticed that some open files I was working on in excel have duplicates, one set is read only, one is not. I closed all that down and we were all set. The other big thing is the Aero feature was dead. So I went online and hit ALL the usual fixes, running the diagnostic, downloading the specific MS diagnostic tool, resetting the service multiple times, restarts, even some registry updates I found. NOTHING worked. The interesting thing is the only part of aero that is not working, is the glass feature, and the peek feature. All the mouse icons and other attributes seem to be working.

I have an Nvidia GTX 460 card, so I updated to the most current form of the drivers, nothing. I delete the drivers and install the original CD drivers, nothing. I then delete the driver and try to use driver sweep to remove them. This is when I notice that I can not boot into safe mod... Read more

Hello,

my Webcam Chicony 2.0 doesn't works. - Lockey by another Application...

So, I have deinstalled the driver, but if i want to install the driver there comes an error...

Something with Win95 stand there....

I have the driver from the Toshiba Page.

Can anyone help me?

Answer:Re: Satellite A210-1BX: webcam issue - locked by another application

Hi

The error message locked by another application is known to me.
This forum contains many threads about this issue.

Firstly it?s very important that Vista SP1 was installed. This update package contains an hotfix which is necessary to get the webcam running properly.

Secondly the installed and loaded messengers like MSN messenger, yahoo messenger, skype can lock the webcam.
Therefore you should remove these applications from RUN key in registry.

The new webcam driver installation should also be done.

I don?t know why you cannot reinstall the webcam software. Maybe you didn?t reinstall it correctly. You have to unzip the folder before you would start the installation. It would be also advisable to clean the registry using the CCleaner after software uninstall.

Although this vista 32bit system has been running with no issues, I have been notified of a single hidden file after an avira scan, which is located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DbgagD\1

Its properties cannot be changed, and its key itself cannot be viewed, edited or deleted with my admin account, running regedit "as administrator". I dont know what the entry is used for and if it is safe. When I click on its "1" property, I get "an error is preventing this key being opened:the system cannot find the file specified". I have malwarebytes, spywareblaster and trend micro installed, along with my main comodo firewall, and avira antivirus. They do not conflict. With an updated malwarebytes, and kaspersky tdsskiller, I have had no suspicious files listed after a scan (the latter on its default settings). Only avira shows the registry key as hidden. This is now my second attempt at the Gmer rootkit scanner. The first time it gave me a blue screen with "kxldipoc.sys - page fault in nonpaged area". Perhaps this was due to Defogger not disabling the cd emulation properly-is that likely?

I have browsed the net and found DbgagD listed in the registry on other machines (often with their own virus related issues-not always a good sign), showing as [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DbgagD\1*] with content similar to "value"="?\06\01\1b\065&#... Read more
