Need to Override Permission Settings

Question: Need to Override Permission Settings

While my WD Portable External Hard Drive was connected to my work computer, I changed the permissions on a particular folder so that only I had access to it. (I was lending it to someone else but didn't want then to have access to this particular folder).

2 hours later I was told my services were no longer required, pack up all my things and leave. Unfortunately, I forgot to reset the permissions before I left, and now when I try to access the folder on my home PC, I get 'Access Denied'.

I realise it was stupid to mess about with the permissions (especially when I don't know that much about them), but is there anyway to take ownership of this folder to gain access to the contents?

Both work and home PC are XP. Work is 64 bit. Home is 32 bit. Permissions were set up on work PCs, but not on home.
And no, there's no chance of me gaining access to my work PC again.

Preferred Solution: Need to Override Permission Settings

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I want to replace a dll file in system32 with another one. It says I need permission.

Is there a command in cmd that can replace this with another one? Or any other way to do this?

Answer:How can I replace & override orig dll file. Says need permission.

If you use the built in Administrator, you will have the necessary permission.
Administrator Account
That being said use extreme caution when accessing a dll account, be sure you know what you are doing. You can cause problems that you may not be able to resolve. Before starting, create a system restore poing.

I accidentally changed boot.ini to log in to safe mode to try and solve a Trojan issue. But I don't have the administrator password apparently. Is there a way to override this setting in BIOS or in the Windows Advanced Options menu so I can log in using my regular username and password?

Answer:Override boot.ini settings?

"But I don't have the administrator password apparently."If you mean the (Windows) Administrator user that's in Safe mode on the Logon screen, usually there is no password - just click on Administrator and press Enter. The bios has nothing to do with that. If that works, Start - Run - type: msconfig , press Enter, select the Boot.ini tab, click on the box beside /SAFEBOOT to remove the checkmark - there is no checkmark on any box there by default - click on OK at the bottom of the window.Restart the computer, boot normally. When you want to go into Safe mode, press F8 repeatedly while booting, do not hold down the key, and when the boot choices menu appears, select Safe mode, or Safe mode with networking. If you mean a laptop bios Setup's Administrator password, why don't you know it ?It CANNOT be easily removed. If you mean a desktop bios Setup's Administrator password, when the AC power has been removed to the case, - remove the mboard's cmos battery from the mboard for a few seconds, install it again, making sure the + on it's top is where you can see it, - or - move the clear cmos jumper on the mboard to it's clear position, move it back after a few seconds. In either case, you will get a "cmos checksum error" or similar when you boot after that - you need to set the date and time in the bios Setup, save settings.

Hi,

At my work we all have laptops with Vista Enterprise, and we have Administrator rights on the computer. Still, IT has managed to set the performance settings on the laptops to "best performance" and it does not help to set performance option back to "best appearance" via control panel. Even though I have admin rights.

I am thinking this might be overridden in the registry or something? Any input? I really don't know where to start...

Although I don't want to guide you in how to circumvent your IT superior's settings, it's probably a setting that has been set in the Local Group Policy Editor.

Hey folks. I'm trying to get the new splinter cell running on my X850XT-PE. It's a good card that's run everything I've thrown at it so far, but splinter cell 4 requires SM 3.0 to run. I read online somewhere that editing simpleshader=False to true and maybe some other settings, i could get the game to run.

I included the settings file for you if you've got any suggestions.

Thanks, Pete

For those who don't mind sending telemetry to MS, skip this post. For all others...

I happened to be in Task Scheduler for something completely unrelated, and noticed MS had setup tasks to send telemetry about my computer to MS, even though I had opted out of doing so when I installed W7. These tasks were located in the "Customer Experience Improvement Program" folder under Microsoft/Windows branch in the Task Scheduler Library tree. Digging into this, it turns out a KB update issued 4th quarter 2015 ignores your privacy settings and sets up tasks to send telemetry anyway. (See Forbes article link below.)

Forbes Welcome

To check this on my machines, I went to the original setting for CEIP and saw it was indeed set to NOT participate... you can see by going to Control Panel -> Action Center -> click hyperlink at left to "Change Action Center settings", then in the new window, look at the bottom for the hyperlink that says "Customer Experience Improvement Program setting" ... and see if it is set to NOT participate (as mine was).

Now go into Task Scheduler and into the folder of the same name under MS/Windows... and see if there aren't 2 or 3 enabled tasks... in the description in the lower part of the window, you will see the tasks are for CEIP and involve sending telemetry.

After disabling those tasks, I also found three other folders setup to send telemetry, apparently (as per the article above and others sources I read) from other KB... Read more

I am trying to set my folder permission settings on XP Pro. If I take away someones ability to delete they can no longer rename a folder. How do I enable someone to create and rename both folders and files, but not delete them. Thanks.

Answer:Folder permission settings.

I have these basics down.

It seems that when a new file is renamed, the phrase "New Folder" is actually being deleted, thereby requiring "Deletion" capability. But a user can also delete anything else with this permission, which is bad news. Is there away around this bug?

As a less than knowledgeable computer user I stupidly changed my User "Permission Allow" check marks. I now get a "failed to enumerate objects in the container. Access denied." Of coarse I didn't write down what was originally checked off in the "Allow" box.

Would there be a listing of default settings so I can recheck the 3 categories and boxes within them to original. "System", "My Name With email address", and "Administrators"?

I'm not griping this time!

I've set up a limited account on my computer, and when I was testing it out, I noticed that I was able to manipulate the settings to the anti-virus program that's installed. How do I, using my administrator account, prevent the limited account from messing with it? I've hidden as many folders as possible, but the task bar icon is still visible and I can't hide it. And I can't right-click the task bar icon and mess with the security settings that way.

Answer:User account permission settings

Robwood,

The problem is more with your Internet Security software than with Vista. If you make the files for the Internet Security software inaccessible to a limited user - that software might not work properly for that user. Most Internet Security software (i.e. Norton, McAfee) allows you to install parental controls and give you the ability to control WHAT Windows users can or cannot do (including the manipulation of the software's settings).

What Internet Security Software are you using? Have you installed parental controls? Did you install the software while logged in as "Administrator"?

Let me know and I can probably offer more assistance.

Is there a way I can restore the default permission settings on a hard drive. I have two drives my master which Vista runs on, and a secondary drive, with all my audio and video files I use for all my editing, plus my photos and music. I was messing around with the premission settings, and I am set as an Adminstrator, but now all my files are not accessible, I have tried to do a million things but I have to click so many windows just get to a file to use. Try using system restore to reset the settings. If not, create a new user account with administrator priveleges and delete the old one.

I recently re-installed Windows 7 and all of a sudden I was having access denied problems which had never occurred before.
I have managed to fix all of these apart from one:-
When I try to change the icon via the properties of a desktop item I get:-
"you will need to provide administrator permission to change these settings"
I am the only user of the PC and my account is an administrator account.

As I said, I never had this problem prior to the re-install.
I have searched and searched but have yet to find any answers or solutions.

Any help or info would be helpful.

Turn off your user account settings in user accounts.

control panel>user accounts>change user account control settings

I always set mine to never notify.

You will have to reboot to make changes.

Greetings,
I have been working with programs such as Blender 3d recently which conflict with my security settings. I have been getting permission denied for saving files and doing other functions in these programs. I found out how to disable the administrator setting by going in command prompt and typing "net user administrator /active no" and how to keep the computer from constantly bringing up warnings asking me to allow a change to my computer by going in user account settings and sliding the slider to zero. It seemed to be working untill I took the slider back up so that I could have some security enabled while on the internet, and then even when I took the slider back down it was still the way it was before, not letting me save my files on some programs and bringing up messages asking me to allow myself to run a program I had clicked on. I tried bringing up the command prompt and re-disabling the administrator setting and also made sure the slider was down all the way, to no effect. I was trying to do a system restore to restore whatever is screwing this up, but an error comes up everytime telling me it can't access a file possibly because of antivirus being on, even though I already turned all the security features off. Any way I could have missed something that I did right the first time but not the second?
Thanks!

I think I've screwed myself up into a corner. I really need help as Google is not bringing up anything that might help.
What happened is I tried to adjust the security setting for my whole external hard disk.
I have the admin rights to my computer and wanted to restrict a user to be able to read and execute only. I right clicked the drive (L:\) and adjusted the EVERYONE group.
What I didn't know was EVERYONE included the admin too. So now I've blocked myself from editing the files and folders in the external. Now I see all accounts have the special permission part unticked.
And if I check the properties of a folder in the hard disk I see an account with the special permission allowed
In a fit of panic I accidentally removed the account with special permission privilege from my hard disk properties so I don't see it when I check the properties of my hard disk but I can see the account when I check the properties for the individual folders.
For awhile I had access denied when I tried to enter the drive but now I can enter but still am restricted (can't delete folders, etc)

How do I rectify this mess I'm in?

Answer:File Permission Settings for External Drive

Through further googling, I've discovered 'taking ownership' so it's all settled now.

I have my OS settings configured not to check for and install updates unless I prompt Windows to do so. I recently manually installed some updates. A few days later I noticed Windows was installing updates upon start up. I checked my update settings and sure enough they were set for everything to check and install updates automatically. What is going on here? I never noticed this kind of behavior with Vista or Windows 7.

Has anyone else noticed this or have a way to truly stop automatic updates?

I know how to share the folder if I use option “Everyone” Under Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing > Permissions > Add > Everyone ,,,,,,and I know how to use the option “Public Folder” which is located %SystemDrive%\User\Public

With “Everyone” option PC4 and PC5 would be able to get access to the shared folder
Now my question if I do not want to use "Everyone" option , I have to create additional three local accounts on the server which are ( username : forum1,password : work1 ) and ( username: forum2, password:work2 ) and ( username: forum3, password:work3 )

Those username then will be able to login to the server which I do not want that to happen. Is this what suppose to be in such scenario ?

I'd like a brief tutorial, or a link to a page where I might be able to accomplish a little more restrictive environment. I understand the basic logic for what I want to accomplish, yet I can't get it to work. Here's my scenario:

Through Active Directory, I want to set a global group of users with restricted access to certain settings and programs, namely Remote Desktop Connection (I had a separate thread that dealt with comp. sci. students using the RDC to bypass the web filter). I can go around each computer and disable the RDC remotely, but I'd like to set it up to where every account name takes on the security/permission settings.

As a note: At my college, the accounts are set up to where even the desktop background is reset after logout. We have a tiny problem with kids changing the mouse cursors and backgrounds here. Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance.

The network environment is a Workgroup consisting of Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 Pro, and Windows XP Pro.

My example:
I have enabled Guest account in the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer.
I have created a new folder "guestshare" in c: and use Share with menu to add Guest with Read/Write Permission Level.

When I try to map it in the Windows XP Pro machine thru Map Network Drive function under Tools menu, I won't see that share using the Browse button. However, I can type the UNC path and map it.

If I turned off the Password Protected Sharing in the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer, I will see that share using the Browse button and able to map it. What is the reason for this behavior?

I wonder whether the following settings in Advanced sharing settings of Windows Server 2008 R2 can affect mapping:

File and printer sharing
Public folder sharing

Since mapping a drive requires authentication, is there any settings in User Right Assignments and Security Options of Local Policy that can affect mapping? For example, I wonder about the following settings:

User Right Assignments
Access the computer from the network
Allow log on locally
Deny access to this computer from the network
Deny log on locally

Security Options
Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only
Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously

I have been going nuts with this. For the past 3 days I have been getting messages saying I do not have permission to write in directories where I am listed as the owner. I have ensured that the users MyuserID, Administrators, and SYSTEM all have Full control over the directory. I have also made sure that the parent directories also give these users full control. I could live with this and just escalate my privileges each time I create a file. However I run some apps that need to write into some of these directories and they cant. I have checked that the application process is run under my userID and has the need permission, however it still can not write to these directories.

Is this a known bug that has recently been created? Is there some new Group or User that needs to be given permission to modify the directory. This seems to be a problem on some machines, but not others. Any help would be much appreciated. Since this just started without any changes by me, I am assuming that some Windows update is the cause.

Answer:File and Dir security permission settings not taking effect

Welcome to the Ten forums.

Have you check your Update history. Are any updates failing?

While I can't comment on known bug, others may have more info, do you have restore points enabled? If so would you consider invoking system restore as you seem to have a handle on when it started.

Obviously updates will simply re-initiate. You may consider changing what updates you receive. Make it just windows and do not included other products (ie., drivers). This will rule out drivers or "Other" patches.

Do you use any software to Image your OS / Data? If not, a number of individuals on this forum recommend Macrium Reflect. You may also want to review the tutorial section. Macrium is free to home users. It is easy to use and can quickly get you back to a known working system.

When TeraCopy moves a file from a user-owned folder to a public folder, it retains folder's user-level permissions. I can manually give access to Everyone for this folder, but it is very annoying.

So, I'm looking for a way to easily remove a folder's own permission settings and make it use only inherited permissions.

TIA

Apologies if this topic has previously been discussed, but my search didn't yield helpful results.

In attempting (unsuccessfully) to install a citrix plugin for remote desktop, I'm discovering that advanced security settings for Program Files are screwed up, but I am unable to adjust them. I am currently logged in as administrator and user account control settings are set to "never notify". Please see the attached screenshot. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Permission / Advanced Security Settings issue with Program Files

What is the image you posted supposed to show? I don't see anything wrong. It's normal for Trusted Install to own the operating system directory trees like Program Files, Program Data, Windows, etc.

Your looks the same as mine:

Are you logged in as the normally hidden Administrator account or are you logged in as an Administrator level account?

I have successfully configured my server to allow SSH connections using OpenSSH. I'm able to log in as an administrator and browse files by command line.

When I don't use UNC for my home directories (as I do with my domain under user accounts so I have a home directory) I am able to browse files within Filezilla.

The problem is that I *cannot* log into the SFTP site with an account if it does not have administrative rights. Is there a specific right that I need to grant to that user account using ntrights.exe? I'm baffled. So close, yet still so insecure.

I'm tempted to just use FTPS with Serv-U or something. Can't remember if that will run as a service.

Oh, I'm using Windows 2003, Enterprise Edition (MSDNAA)

Thanks in advance, and if you require any additional information, please let me know!

My next step will to be able to figure out how to apply virtual directories for my users.

--Fox

Edit: Oh, and yes, the users do have permission to access their home directories.

hi everyone,

I cannot edit the properties pannel for 'Application system' (named: COMSysApp) in COM+ Application folder, in Local computer, in Components services.
My OS is a WIN 7 Home premium Service pack 1, 64 bit .

-My question is how to make editable this pannel.-

In other words, most of tabs for thise pannel are shown in greyed-out.
COM+ applications are vital for the security of all system, so I need to manage those.

Could you show me how resolve this issue, by Services component tool and with Regedit?
I'm the administrator of Pc and I run all administrative tools as Administrator.

Is it possible the solution is about user priviliges, maybe in Regedit or what else?

I need to manage ALL services on my PC for security.

(Moreover, I tried to close manually, by Win firewall, the ports for the services in grey out, but it's impossible to do. Seems the firewall rules are ineffecctive. On network
monitor, indeed, in the section of listening port, on descriprion appears something like that: impossible to firwalled it.

I'm quitly worried about this.

I read somewhere, the solution it could be running as System in my Pc but for Home Edition I cannot understand how to do that.)

Any idea?

Thanks

I've been having a ton of problems since my boyfriend clicked on an email he thought was authentic from an ebay fraud. Web pages have been slow to not responsive, I kept getting errors about remote server refusing connections, the lan service kept showing proxy server settings and when I would uncheck the box, it just went back again and the check reappears. I tried a system restore and when it came back on it was doing something with new settings and there was never a box or anything with an option to make new settings from the restore. I've done this a few times before and never had settings load like this did. Since then everything seems to have problems. Also, I cannot view the wireless adapter properties because it says I don't have administrative privileges which is what I sign in under I think and also when I click on the show characters under the password it never shows it now just makes the check disappear. I ran hijack and this is what I got:

Have looked at the other postings about Windows 7 and "You need permission" - this one seems new. I have a laptop and a desktop both running Windows 7, both part of HOMEGROUP.

The desktop has two hard drives (C and D), both shared with full access to EVERYONE.
I can see both but can only update the D drive on the desktop from the laptop. When I try any update (new folder, copy a new file in, etc.) to the C drive, I get the "You need permission" error.

Have tried turning off sharing then turning back on for the C drive and have compared the sharing between C and D - they appear identical. Snipit of C drive permission attached. Any thoughts or ideas on what else to try would be appreciated.

Answer:You need permission - happening on networked drive that has permission

Rather than sharing form the root of the C: drive you should be sharing from the C:>Users folder instead. This is the default setting for Windows and there are many good reasons for this.

For networked drives that were created under a different User name you would also need to allow for sharing using the "Security" tab of the C: drive. The link below shows you how.

You can also set this drive share up at the C:>Users location if desired.

A wire came loose in my laptop charger so I asked for a replacement, but the supplier was adamant that there was something wrong with the port in my laptop, not the charger (he was wrong), so they took it away to fix. Anyway, a member of their staff took my hard drive out to copy a couple of my files to a disk for me as I needed them asap and couldn't get my laptop charging. Apparently that's all they did.

Today I got my laptop back and things are not right. I am the administrator and there are no other user accounts on my computer. I am recognised as the administrator when I go on Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts. But now all of a sudden I can't access Music, Pictures, Videos or Documents from the start menu. Hello, I am having an issue with a website. Normally, I look up the issue and follow the steps to fix this issue, however, I have been on countless sites and none of them have fixed the issue.

I went on to the web today and found that all three of my search engines, Chrome, IE and Firefox all start up a website: dosearches.com. I do not have any toolbars, there are no extensions, add-ons or plug-ins. I have reset the default web pages (i.e. yahoo.com/google.com/msn.com) and when going into the internet options after exiting the internet application, they still show as defaults but this website dosearches is overriding it. I've used Norton, malwarebytes and something called Cloud System Booster. I've tried to erase the registry keys and have even went into System32\etc\host and tried to block the site but it still shows up. The last thing I've downloaded was a .rar extractor called IZArc which I have uninstalled. I do not have Snap.do (which is what many websites state to uninstall).

I've also have reset Firefox under Help > Troubleshooting and it still shows up.

Thank you for your time!

Question: Override on screen

I really hope someone can help me here. I have a computer which when powered up constantly shows "override" on the screen and will not boot up.

I used to be able to unplug the power cables and then reseat them and this seemed to work but now it doesn't resolve the problem.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong and what I can do to remedy the situation.

Thanx in advance.

Answer:Override on screen

This means that the monitor is generally not getting an input from the computer or there's a problem with the monitor. Check all the connections between the computer and monitor, try another monitor if possible.

Also note if the computer beeps, and if so what pattern. You should also open up the computer case and make sure that the video card is seated correctly as is the RAM. reseat both to make sure the connection is good. However, if a part in the computer has failed, you'll need to swap parts to determine which component it is.

Question: Override password

Recently, I read an article about how to override a computers password. I am not sure which magazine but it was within the last month.

I did not pay much attention to the article at the time, and then last week, my brother in law died. His computer is password protected and while I was able to guess the password with the help of his wife, it made me think about that article and how close I was to needing to know how to do it.

He was using Windows XP.

I am interested in seeing how it was done. In my case, I might have needed that information.

Did anyone here read that same article?

Just found out that my Dell Studio XPS 13 has a busted sense pin in one of the headphone jacks. Basically, that means that the sensor in the headphone jack (that shuts off the speakers when headphones go in) is permanently stuck in the "headphones in" position.

The upshot of this is that my speakers are basically dead until I can fix that thing.

To replace the jack - you have to replace the entire motherboard - which would cost $600.

Anyone have any other ideas?

I've tried wiggling the headphone jack around inside there... so the manual fix doesn't work.

Any ideas how to disable it with a driver or otherwise?

Thanks!

Does setting your video driver application, like in ATI tool, to override 60hz default to a higher rate while playing 3d games make any difference? Either in speed or looks? I have been trying it different ways and then benchmarking and if anything it seems that forcing a higher refresh rate might help the speed a little.

does anyone know if all this matters much? thanks

Answer:refresh rate override

Setting the refresh rate to higher than 60 Hz allows for a higher frame rate (especially with Vsync enabled); when benchmarking vsync should be disabled - that way refresh rate won't have any effect on performance.

Higher refresh rates are also better for your eyes (Well, some people - like myself) are sensitive to anything below 85Hz).

I want my desktop wallpaper to change automatically on specific dates (say, my wife’s birthday or New Year’s eve). How do I do that? I have searched Google extensively and tried dozens of wallpaper managers and desktop calendars, but oddly enough I have found nothing that offers the simple functionality I want.

To clarify, let me state what I am NOT looking for:
• I am NOT looking for a sequencer that merely rotates wallpapers at pre-set time intervals.
• I am NOT looking for a sequencer that merely changes wallpapers at certain times of the day (morning/afternoon/evening). There’s a Microsoft program that does just that (it’s just called “Wallpapers”) but this is NOT what I need.
• I am NOT looking for a desktop tool that merely adds a calendar to my desktop.
Instead, I want my desktop background to function as sort of a reminder or alarm: when a specified time and date comes (say, Christmas) display the appropriate wallpaper (say, Santa) for a specified time interval.

There is a Microsoft program for Windows XP, called PowerToy Wallpaper Changer, that offers something like the option I want: it’s a checkbox called “override wallpaper on special days” (you can't chose the time of day, though). Unfortunately, this program does not work on Windows 7 (The PowerToy stores the wallpaper file, toyhide.bmp, in the Windows\System32 folder, rather than saving the file on a per-user basis. For same reason, Wi... Read more

Answer:How to override wallpapers on specified dates?

sorry for digging this thread up, but i was wondering if anyone ever found a way to make this happen?

if not, can anyone recommend a background switcher that is actually random (the default windows 7 one seems to repeat quite a bit before going through them all)

I want to know if there is a way to override the cool 'n quiet feature without turning it off. I mean, on my old Athlon 64 rig, the processor seems to be undecided on certain programs, meaning it doesn't know whether to run at 2000Mhz or at 1000MHz so the program randomly slows down when the processor goes down to 1000MHz. Then it realizes it needs to be at 2000MHz and goes back up. Then it isn't using enough CPU power so it goes back down causing lag again. I am using the computer as a Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2, and FEAR server for LAN parties.

Is there a way to force it to run at the full 2000MHz for just these programs without turning off cool 'n quiet?

Answer:Override Cool 'N Quiet

You can go into the power management section of your control panel & set it to "desktop computer". Once you're done playing, set it back to "minimal power usage".

Hey guys, I try all different experiments on my computer. However vista seems to like to tell me access denied every once and a while.

My current project it to encrypt the SAM using the SYSTEM account to attempt to prevent password cracking via booting from disk.

Does anyone know if there is a way to either bypass, override or temporarily disable vistas security? It keeps giving me access denied, even running the command as nt authority\SYSTEM gets the denied message too.

Any ideas? Please don't say don't do it, I am doing it as soon as I find out how to get past this damm protocol. Assuming I find a way to circumvent it

Thanks

Hi, I have been having an issue recently with newer games. The games I play now are starting to override my gpu screen brightness settings and reverting them back to original brightness.

Basically I have my screen brightness set lower than normal through my gpu control panel. When I play some of these newer games now they override my gpu settings and revert them back to normal, even after the game is exited. I have to then go back into my gpu cotrol panel and set it back to what I had it originally.

This has happened with 2 different graphics cards, Nvidia and AMD both using their gpu display settings panel. Which would be Nvidia Control Panel, and AMD Cataclysm/Crimson Control Panels. Also with different drivers. The games I've had issues with are Fallout 4, Warhammer Vermintide, and now Ghost in the Shell Online. So I don't know if its an issue just for me or if that's just how games are being made now to use their brightness settings to override mine. Any thoughts?

I had to reinstall Windows 98 from scratch and am able to connect to the internet via Netscape. However, I also want to use IE but when I launch it, I just get a sign up page for MSN, which I am not interested in. How do I just get the browser to open?

Answer:IE reinstall - how to override MSN sign up?

It sounds like you are clicking on the IE icon on the desktop. Go to start programs and click on IE Explorer there. I believe the icon on the desktop is solely for setting up msn connection and I deleted it and just went to the start programs and opened explorer that way.

Then when it did open I think it opened to msn page and I had to change that.

Ok I actually work for Microsoft so its ironic I need to come somewhere else for the answer lol.

Anyway here is the situation.
We are sent Flash drives so that 90% of our work is done at home.
My OS is windows 7 ultimate 64
The flash drive will load up an emulated windows xp system in kiosk mode.

I can get override the kiosk by unplugging monitor 1, replugging it back in, then clicking anywhere on monitor 2. Normally you can not move the mouse over to monitor 2, this allows that.

However as I'm working in help desk their forced kiosk is preventing me from viewing websites and using tools I NEED in order to get things taken care of, no matter how much they say everything I need is in the emulated windows, it just is not and I need to keep switching out of it.

Basically it just is not convenient for me at all, and if I'm in a rush constantly unplugging and replugging in monitor one just so i can look something up then switch back is going to cause some communication problems as I'm more focused and aggravated by the entire process of getting out of kiosk lol.

I know quite a bit about computers (autodidact) but changing Kiosk settings loaded from a flash drive is not something I'm familiar with.

A few options I have seen are to load local services in windows 7 and edit them but I'm not sure where as this loads from a flash drive.

Also I have seen some registry changes, but again all these suggestions were pertaining to people with the kiosk enabled app being on the hard d... Read more

Answer:Override Kiosk mode?

Guess I can't edit after certain timeframe.
Anyhow, I figure that if I can set a hotkey to run an app in my windows 7 while within the emulated windows xp it will switch out of kiosk too, but I can't seem to find info on how to do that.

Another alternative was me setting up a hotkey within NVidia control panel that "switches application to monitor 2"
But it seems nvidia removed their hotkey features a while ago.

Any 3rd party programs that could possibly setup hotkeys that won't be disabled by kiosk?

I know another tech has media buttons on his keyboard (music, email button etc) and if he spams them it minimizes kiosk, this is pretty much what I want to try but with some sort of hotkey setting. Just can't seem to find anything that will be tied to windows shell.

If anyone knows of a 3rd party app to set hotkeys that pretty much can be activated anytime let me know

Hi guys,

I have a big problem. i have connected my monitors via displayport to my computer.
displayport is very nice, but it has one feature that is - in combination with windows vista/7 - very bad. displayport specification says that if a device (Monitor) will be turned off (standby) it will not be visible to the computer anymore. that is very annoying because windows has a routine which permanently checks if all monitors are still connected. if one monitor will be physicly disconnected, then windows will reorganize the desktop (all content that was on the disconnected screen will be moved to the others). if the monitor will be turned on again windows will move the windows back to the place where it has been before, but often it does not work correctly.

does somebody know how to disable that? maybe a registryentry?

Ran Spybot. Only message I got was: "Windows Security Center.AntiVirus Override" along with the location in the key registry. Is this override due to running AVAST or is it something I will need to address?

Thanks!

Answer:Anti-virus override

It's due to the option in the Security Center that says "I have my own Antivirus I will monitor". Nothing serious!

I've started to notice and get a few complaints in our environment, that the laptops are not waking up when the lid is opened.
When checking the power options, i noticed two things, and this is where my question is.
When opening Power Options, On the left of the screen, is the link to choose what happens when the lid is closed.
Currently, this is set to Sleep on our laptops.
Now, if you click the Power Plan itself and go to Advanced Settings, the lid is set to Hibernate.
So essentially there are two separate settings for closing the lid. Of these two, which one takes

presidence? These policies are pushed and controlled via GPO. But I've been able to verify that freshly imaged machines after policies are applied are set identical to this.
Once i know which one takes presidence, I can change the other policy to match
