Preferred Solution: Jerky scrolling in windows and internet explorer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Jerky scrolling in windows and internet explorer

Sounds like you don't have the proper driver for the video adapter. You can obtain this from the manufacturer.

Hi everyone!

I've got a problem with Internet Explorer (who doesn't?). I have a wheel mouse and when I use it to go up and down a page, it used to scroll smooth as silk, but now the screen jerks and lags. Its really annoying. Only been doing it a couple of days. I just upgraded from 128mb to 256mb, and it still does it. This also happens in text documents.

Also, when I open new windows, or when pages load with new windows, they don't pop up anymore, they minimize to the bottom of the screen and I have to right click+maximize to bring it up. About one out of every 10 or so times, they won't come up at all. I can't figure out what is causing this at all.

The first problem might just be some setting with the mouse. I went into Control Panel/Mouse and played around with the number of lines (the default is 3) but it didn't help.

Any suggestions? Both of these problems seemed to have started at the exact same time (about 4 days ago).

I have an HP Pavilion 7960
256 RAM
1.3 ghz
Windows XP Pro

Thanks everyone

Sounds like you have adware/spyware in there somewhere.

First Delete Temp files, Cookies and offline content. To do this,
Open Internet Explorer/Tools/Internet Options/delete cookies/delete files
select off-line content/clear history.
Download cwshredder from here

Close all browser windows (including minimized windows)
Run cwshredder

When it is finished Reboot your computer.

Download Adaware from here

Go here

Make sure you select "Check for updates now" and get the latest reference files.

Run Adaware and hit the Scan now button, make sure Activate indepth scan is selected and then
hit next. After the scan has completed delete everything it finds.

Restart your computer.

Then Download Spybot search & destroy from here. Read the instructions while you're there.

Install the program (Close all browser windows) and run it.

Before scanning press "Online" and "Search for Updates"

Put a check mark at and install all updates.

Click "Check for Problems" and when the scan is finished let Spybot fix/remove all it finds in red.

Restart your computer.

Download "Hijack this" from here
Once you have unzipped it and have it running, Hit the scan button, when the scan is finished the button will change to a save log button, click it and then ... Read more

Question: Jerky Scrolling

I reinstalled xp and now when I scroll it is not smooth. The page jerks along. I tried searching on the net and it said uncheck smooth scrolling - that didn't work. Again searching the net I found it might be in my device manager. I found Video controller vga vcompatible not installed - no driver found I guess. I am not a computer whiz so I am really stuck. Are the two things related? How do I go back to smooth scrolling and how do I find a driver for that uninstalled Video Controller? Or how do I install the controller? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

Question: Scrolling is jerky

I recently downloaded Jing. I used it once, didn't like it and removed it. Since that time I've been troubled with an issue with the screen only when I scroll. Instead of it moving up or down smoothly, it gives the appearance of "refreshing" itself each time. It's unusual, hard on the eyes, and probably shouldn't do that! I've checked mouse settings, screen resolution and can't find a fix!

Ok, onto my second issue.

The computer i'm fixing (3ghz Intel, 512mb Ram) has had scrolling issues before and after the format. It is the same on firefox or IE in that whenever you scroll down a page using either the mouse or the keyboard, it jerks heavily, as if it's loading the whole page again every second.

The mouse is a wired old Logitech model.

I'm noticing a weird annoyance when using the mousewheel to scroll in IE7. It jerks about 20 pixels every second for about 5 or 6 times. I think it has to do with the fact that I'm using a Logitech Wireless Mouse but I'm not sure. Has anyone else notice this problem and if so know of a way to fix it?

Had no idea where to post this question, it kind of lands in a grey area, but seeing as my O/S is XP, thought this would be the most suitable place to start.

I have just performed a clean install, and am in the process of adding, all my AV, and program software. I have however noticed, that when I scroll with my mouse wheel, down the page, it kind of ripples rather than smoothly scrolling.

Have I maybe set my screen up at the wrong resolution? I didn't install any monitor drivers during the install, cos hey, the monitor is working after all. Could something be missing though?

It's not a major issue, but I would like to iron out all these little niggles early on to keep things working tip top.
Please feel free to suggest if this post would be better served in a browser area of the forum, or anywhere else for that matter.

Answer:Jerky browser scrolling.

Did you install the driver for your video card (and did you obtain it from the oem website)?

Is may be just me but scrolling up and down through posts in this forum seems slow and jerky compared to eight forums.

If I press the arrow keys to scroll up and down then it scrolls a bit, pauses for a split second and then carries on a bit more before pausing again. Is this just me or is it some design to make it work better on phones or something?

I tried different themes but it is the same.

Answer:Scrolling seems slow and jerky

It may be specific to your system. I don't have this problem. Try another browser.

Please help. I tried this under security but maybe it should have been here. I've check out several boards and seen problems close to mine but the fixes don't work. This started a couple months ago about the time I upgraded Netscape but I can't swear that has anything to do with it. I've always used Netscape because it runs faster for me. When I scroll it is either very slow or it stops for a few seconds and then jerks to catch up. Typing does the same thing. I will type several words before they all of a sudden show up on the screen. All this is happens about half the time. I've noticed even when I play Hoyle card games it sometimes is jerkly. I am mostly looking around Ebay so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I absolutely never open emails with attachments or click on anything in an email. I use Norton Systemworks, Norton Firewall and I've recently used AdAware and CWShredder. I had a tech person "tune up" my computer, rid of temp. files, defragged, antivirus, etc. My computer is only 1 1/2 yrs. old. Please help me and keep in mind I know more about the Internet than I do the computer itself. This has taken all the joy out of being on line.

If anyone having a jerky/stuttering/lagging when scrolling a webpage in Firefox, here's a fix.

Type in "about:config" in Firefox (address bar) and enter general.smoothScroll under filter. Double click on general.smoothScroll to set it to true.

Or else just install add-on smoothwheel.

I don't understand why they didn't set it to smooth scrolling to true in the first place. First I thought Firefox 3.5.1 was buggy and lagging when tryng to scroll but found out that my IE8 scrolling was very smooth.

In Instagram,WP Central and a little bit in Facebook app when scrolling it jerks alot. It also does it slightly in 6 Tag. Is this a known issue and if so will it be fixed as its driving me mad in an otherwise great device. Is there any temp fix for it?? Never experienced this on WP before. Thanks

Check your ease of access settings. See if 'Screen Magnifier' is turned on. If it is, turn it off. It causes jerky scrolling on my Lumia 820, and my friends Windows Phones.

Ok i decided to get rid of my dell 1.8ghz 2gb ram 80gb hdd laptop and bought:

A hp compaq 2.0ghz core2duo, 3gb ram, 320gb hdd just to 'have the best' and now i wish i didnt 'downGrade'. Other specs inc: IE7, xp pro sp3.

Right issue is: Whereever there is a scrolling box or webpage, for instance if i google something then scroll from top to bottom it will be smooth till about half way then it will jerk and be delayed for a second or 2. Its not webpage specific it will happen even if i goto say internet options then advanced tab and scroll on that it will jerk. On the odd occasion it will be SO BAD it looks as if my vga card drivers are not installed. Also if i click something then start typing it will not pickup the first letters/numbers i type, this is also frustrating as if im typing a password it wont pick up the first digits and i have to start again. Also when highligting text it again wont highlight it all it will pause/stop for a second or 2 before highlighting what i want it to. To solve the issue with no luck ive tried the following:

Update my radeon hd 3200 drivers
reformat laptop (xp pro sp3)
Install all drivers possible
control panal>mouse>wheel>1 as following amount of lines per time
control panel>internet options>advanced>uncheck smooth scrolling

Answer:Chromebook scrolling jerky and hesitates

Hi croths,
So the step of logging into the Guest account is a great first step. The idea behind is that you wouldn't have any of your personal applications or settings loaded, and can isolate if the issue is related to the software (operating system or hardware). Considering it was better, but not perfect(?) the next step would be do a 'power wash' which will rebuild the OS and let you start over. It's quick and takes just a couple of minutes, but if you have personal data you want to save, you'll need to back that up first.
Here are steps to do a powerwash:
Next step would be to do a full system recovery, you can download an OS onto a flashdrive and install it onto your Chromebook. Here are steps:
Finally, if you're still having trouble I would suggest contacting support as it may be a hardware issue we need to address for you.
Hope this helps,Cory

Running Win.Xp Pro 64 - Page scrolling is slow and jerky especially on IE.
Looked at all the usual answers from Mouse to smooth scrolling, but fix eludes me. Where am I going wrong, more detail available if needed.

Answer:Page Scrolling slow and jerky

Hi Peter,

Running Win.Xp Pro 64

I take it that all of your drivers are up to date. Getting drivers for XP x64 can be a bit of a nightmare due to lack of support for x64 XP. There is better support for 64bit OS in Vista and above.

Can you post your full specs. Download and run Speccy for me. Once the program has gathered the required information, go to the top of the Speccy window and do File>Publish Snapshot. Click Yes when prompted. Now copy and paste the URL address that it gives you to your next post.

When did you first notice the issue?

Okay, so my computer is a compaq hp professional. And It's a hand me down but we did get a reboot cd.
A week ago, my computer got a HUGE malware infection and I had to reboot the whole computer. So it's nice and clean now.

But the problem is when I'm on IE or FF, the scrolling is veryveryvery jerky and I took off the smooth scrolling so it would be faster. I even upgraded it. So I'm running on IE7 and FF 3.
Even making the windows smaller and moving them across the screen is jerky.
Help for that, please.

Another thing is that the speakers will not work. And I thought it was just the speakers at first so I tried headphones but that didn't work either. I tried going to the Start -> Accessories -> Volume Control because there was no speaker icon.
And I got this message;
There are no active mixer devices available. To install mixer devices, go to the Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Add Hardware.

And so I followed the directions but I couldn't find that Printers and Other Hardware folder.
So I looked it up online and some suggested to go to the Sounds, Audios, etc folder and make sure it's on speaker. (or something like that)
But in the Audio tab, everything was grayed out.
Please help on that too.

Answer:Jerky Scrolling, No sound from speakers or headphones.

After you reinstalled Windows, did you install video and sound drivers? It sounds like you didn't. The video driver will get rid of the jerky scrolling.Audio drivers will restore sound. Do you have any other cd's for the computer other than the one you mentioned? Your drivers may be on it. If you don't have cd you will have to download the drivers from HP.You can search for the drivers you need at HP support. If you have any problems finding the correct drivers, please post back and let us know the make and model of your computer.

I own a Dell Dimension 8250 w/ Windows XP

Ever since I updated my computer to Internet Explorer 7 (from the most recent version, 6 or 6.2?), my scrolling has become very slow (scrolling down and up the webpage). I have no idea why either. Also, when I close the webpage, the actual webpage becomes white (goes away) and I'm left with my google search, command bar, address bar, you know... (as if you opened a pure white webpage) I have to go to task manager and "End Now". However, this does not always happen and I can close it normally (rarely happens). I tried downloading IE6.2 (or 6 whatever version it was), but it won't let me because it says a newer version of IE is already on the computer.

I'm not really sure if the problem is even from IE or if it's from some other program

Is this a bug within Internet Explorer, or is there a way to overcome this within the program itself.

Hi, I have a problem with Outlook Express & Internet Explorer acting erratically lately. When I try to scroll on the side bar arrow it moves real fast to the bottom and all buttons I try to click in the tool bar also are acting erratically in that sometimes I have to click two or three times (ex: clicking the delete button etc.) . It does the same thing while in Internet Explorer. When trying to scroll in that I am unable to scroll as it moves quickly to the bottom of the screen no matter how slow I try to go. I have smooth scrolling checked in the options box and this just started happening all of a sudden. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

**It was suggested I move this thread to the hardware forum. Copy and paste were the only ways I could figure out how to do this.

My computer is an HP Pavilion dv6000 running Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I recently had a hard drive replaced and the OS reinstalled.

This morning I was irritated to find that my IE is very choppy when scrolling. I looked this problem up online, and I tried the couple of ideas I read about...mainly making sure that "smooth scrolling" was checked in a couple places.

Also, the laptop seemed hotter than usual when I was using it. I downloaded SIW, and the temperatures are as follows:
ACPI - 121 F (50 C)
AMD - 116 F (47 C)
NVIDIA - 156 F (69 C)

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Answer:Internet Explorer scrolling is choppy and laptop seems hot

Temps are not that bad, but they could be lower, and lower is definitely better. However please be aware that these models suffer from overheating and eventual complete failure. You need to update the BIOS to help negate this problem. Also after updating the BIOS you can also buy a can of compressed air and blow out the fans and vents to ensure proper airflow.

Go here and find your exact model; this will be printed on the bottom of the laptop:

Also install the NVIDIA chipset and graphics driver from the HP website, or possibly newer ones from NVIDIA themselves if the HP ones are dated or don't help:

Since you also had this laptop reloaded, did they reinstall the Vista service packs as well? You should be running Service Pack 2 for Vista. You can check this by going to the Control Panel and then to System.

Also, these laptops came with a 32 bit version of Windows Vista Home Premium, did you or they mistaken install the 64 bit version instead of the 32 bit version? The 64bit version requires more RAM to run as well as the 32 bit version and these laptops generally shipped from HP with 1GB or 2GB of RAM, how much RAM do you have?

Answer:Internet Explorer scrolling is choppy and laptop seems hot

I am not familiar with temperature systems in computers but If you feel that is hotter than before, then that could be the reason for slowing down(I guess you meant "choppy" for slow). Anyway if this is the reason, then not only IE, some other programs also has to slow down. Check that and if that is true, please move this to the Hardware section

Try adding to your IE8 Compatibility View Websites List.

Or, you might need to Disable Compatibility View if it's set for all websites:

I've noticed a recent problem on both of my Sony Vaio machines running Windows XP. I have IE 6.0 installed on both machines and have downloaded all windows patches and driver updates for my PCs.

The problem involves scrolling text boxes, such as you would find on any web-based email service, such as Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail. The text box is the box that appears when you go to reply to an email. It is basically the place where you edit text to be sent in a reply email. When I try to scroll up, either page-by-page or single line, the text keeps jumping down to the bottom of the message. Scrolling down doesn't produce any problems.

Needless to say, this can be quite annoying. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Answer:Textbox scrolling problem in Internet Explorer for Win XP on Sony Vaio Machines

I have a Sony Vaio and have never experienced this problem. However, I did have a friend that did on his machine (not a vaio) and it was due to incorrect mouse drivers.

Are your drivers current?

I just recently purchased an Lenovo X200 Tablet and whenever I scroll down the page in Internet Explorer, I get intermittent freezing or stuttering. The stutter/pause happens for about 3-10 seconds and then resumes to scroll. It appears to happen mostly on pages such as or and despite having the webpage fully downloaded, it still occurs scrolling up and down the same page. I tried updating my wireless network drivers thinking it could be poor wireless internet reception but it still occurs; there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with my router or internet broadband as I tested it on another computer.  I don't know if it has any relationship to the "buzzing" or "whining" noise, Centrino whine that people have spoken of in the forums, that I also hear with my computer when it's extremely quiet. If anyone has experience or can advise what's going on, I'd appreciate it.

Answer:Intermittent Freezing and Stutter while scrolling webpage in Internet Explorer on X200T

I would try using a different browser first like firefox to make sure it isn't an issue with IE and not something else. I personally do not use IE as the default browser and have never experienced such issues in firefox with my X200 tablet. let us know the results.

Hello, just wondering if anyone could help resolving choppy scrolling in IE11. When I scroll using the touchpad on the laptop, the cursor pointer comes up with the little blue spinning wheel (hourglass back in the day) like the computer is processing something. The pages scrolls but it's very lazy and I have to swipe across the whole touchpad area to just make the page to move few rows. Same issue when ctrl+scroll is used to magnify the page, same choppiness.troubleshooting done:- When I use the vertical scroll bar the page scrolls just fine- installed two Other browsers, no issue there- disabled smooth scrolling, no change- tried all drivers available

I just got a used Acer Aspire 3000-3004 I'm not sure.  It says 3004 on back but 3000 on everything else.  I first started it and opened IE to get Chrome installed, but IE was scrolling on it's own.  I thought this might be some kind of infection so I came here first to find out.  Has someone taken over this pc?  Wanted to get some advice before I even did a scan with free AVG antivirus.  I also have Recovery discs if that is the beast way to go, and, considering it is Used - perhaps this is the best thing to do.  I have another Laptop running Linux if needed, this new used laptop will be for Windows needs.
In System Properties I removed the Tick in the box for "Allow Remote invitations to be sent from this compter"
It says 2GB of Virtual memory, that means it's got 2 GB of RAM right?
Another question: The C:Drive says that only 10GB is being Used and 69.6 of free space.  Is that possible with an XP install, seems very small to me.

I open Windows Explorer with the Windows keyboard key plus "e". I begin navigating in the left pane to the desired folder by using the scroll bars and expanding folders by using the + at the left of folder names. Not every time but most times the left panel will scroll of its own volition. Up or down, it does not seem to be consistent. Then I have to go back to the scroll bar and return the left pane to the view I wanted and was at. This happens on my laptop at work and my desktop at home. How do I configure Windows Explorer to stay where I put it?

Windows Explorer in Windows 7 is aggravating me. In the left panel, when I click on the little + sign to expand a folder to show its subfolders, Windows Explorer scrolls the selected main folder to the bottom of the panel. I then have to scroll the expanded list of subfolders up the screen so I can see it. Windows Explorer does this most, but not all, of the time. How can I keep Windows Explorer from scrolling the list to the bottom of the panel? Is there a way to get Windows Explorer to put the line with the name of the expanded main folder at the top of the panel? Thanks.Steve

That's a known "bug" in the RTM (Released To Manufacturing) version of Windows 7 without SP1 installed. So installing SP1 might fix it. SP1 is normally delivered via Automatic Updates.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post here. I just got a Dell XPS 8300 with Windows Professional 64-bit. So far, most everything seems to be working normally. However, in Windows Explorer (which I use a lot), the left-side Navigation Pane is getting all screwed up visually when I scroll.

As an aside, I would really like to turn off smooth scrolling in Windows Explorer, but can't figure out how to do it. I have "smooth-scroll list boxes" unchecked, but it doesn't seem to help. I can get TweakUI for XP to run in compatibility mode either (someone on another forum was able to use that to disable smooth scrolling). I wonder if the animated smooth scrolling is causing the problem.

Different types of scrolling cause different degrees of the problem, but it happens nearly all the time. Hitting F5 will clean up the screen, but I would rather figure out what's causing the screen repaint problems.

I've attached a screenshot of what's happening.

I've done many searches (on this forum and other places) and not seen much, if any, people talking about this.

Any ideas?

Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, make sure you are in Classic View, with all Control Panel icons showing. If not, click Switch to Classic View in the left pane of Control Panel.
Click Internet Options to open the Internet Options dialog box. Click the Advanced tab and scroll down to the Settings: Browsing heading. Select or clear the Use smooth scrolling check box.

Hi,My computer has been irritating me for months with laggy typing, when I close programs they do not disappear from the bottom bar quickly, when I try to play Spider Solitaire, the cards deal and move jerkily.I scan with NOD32 daily (NOD32 is updated daily). I used to run a paid up version of Counter Spy but have removed it because I don't like the program. I also run a paid up version of The Ultimate Trouble Shooter (like SiSoft Sandra) but can discern nothing in the process descriptions that looks out of place.I followed the Hijackthis routine to the letter and saved the log which I am posting. I didn't post it at the time as I have never used a forum before and got a little nervous about it all....*sigh*After I did the Grinler/Hijackthis routine, the computer ran well but now it has gone bad again so I have to do something to preserve my sanity.I did install Zone Alarm but have not used it for a couple of weeks as I never seem to be able to manage personal firewalls very well. While I was running Zone Alarm the computer was fine and now it is not so I guess that tells me something.Anyway, this is my HijackThis log file from a couple of weeks ago. Hi, i am new at this, so bear with me lol

We have just moved our XP computer into the living room, and connected it to a 58kb dial-up connection. We installed AVG 8 and everything was running fine

Now we've installed Windows Live OneCare Family safety on the machine so we can monitor my borther and sisters internet usage.

Now, the computer runs extremely slowely, Windows Explorer continually crashes, meaning we have great difficulty opening My Documents, and My Computer or anything that requires Explorer to open

As well as this, now the internet is majorly slow... even for bloomin dial-up, we used to get at least 9kbps, but now its shot down to between 2.5 and 1.5 kbps

AVG is now continuously scanning... even outside of scheduled scans, and constantly wants to update :S

And finally, i have now noticed that small files i dont use very frequently have begun to dissapear from the system!!! music files, images, word docs etc.

We have tried defragging it, scandisk, using AdAware SE Personal 2005, AVG Scans, and they all come up with negligeable results.

As well as this, now the pc wont install files for Trend Micro Online scans to run... so we cant even work it out that way :S

I have a suspicion this could be something to do with OneCare, or Multiple Viruses in the system that have somehow hidden themselves from AVG

This sounds like a virus, have you tried running a hijackthis log?

Hello everybody. Well, I've come here for assistance. I'm not getting my hopes up because with this forum obviously you can't see my computer so there's millions of reasons this problem could be occuring. so Really do I expect to be able to fix this FREE? Most of everything else offline works well decent. THE INTERNET?? It has good strength, I have fast Internet connection. BUT IT IS VERY VERY SLOW. Answer:All Internet browsers sickening slow jerky and I NEED HELP.

Generally, if you have a program that you didn't intentionally install, and it's telling you there's 1000's of errors, it's most likely lying to you.
If you'd like to solve the problem for "free", there several great applications on this website to attempt to do just that.  From the download section, I'd grab AdwCleaner, and Malwarebytes Anti-rootkit. These two have generally served me well in the past and continue to do so in the present. Sometimes the biggest challenge has been getting to a point where the computer will allow the files to be downloaded.  You may get redirected, or have files download that you don't intend. Pay attention to the file dialog when you're getting the files. They are not named with a generic "setup.exe", so if you get prompt to save or run "setup.exe", you've been directed elsewhere, and are probabaly just getting more malware.

I have Dell Inspiron 1720 Laptop with windows vista OS.
Yesterday we started having a problem.....we often watch videos on You tube and also on iPlayer. The sound/picture is semi-freezing continually every couple of seconds. Also. as you move the mouse cursor across the screen it will move smoothly then it will freeze and reappear a cm away from where it froze. The DVD's wont play properly either. They too are doing the same thing mentioned before every couple of seconds.
When the circle spins round to let you know the computer is working it will spin properly at the normal speed and every couple of seconds it will freeze.
Its as if the computer has got scans running or having to do loads at the same time when in actual fact nothing seems to be running. It even does this as soon as i restart the computer. I have tried doing a system restore and it has made no difference. Any suggestions?

This started happening three days ago, and happens about once every day, and now, once every few hours.

After a certain amount of time, many programs will suddenly freeze, crash, fail to show a window, etc. For example, explorer.exe will become nonresponsive, internet explorer will crash, and when restarted, will lock up and become nonresponsive, windows media player will not produce a window (although wmplayer.exe is launched), and system restore will not display a window (although rstrui.exe is launched). Before the first occurrence, the programs work fine; however, after they experience that problem once, they continue to experience the problem. Also, they seem to be somehow linked; for example, if internet explorer crashes and fails to display windows properly/becomes nonresponsive, trying to use Windows media player later will not work either. I should also note that nothing is hogging the CPU during this time. However, some programs are completely unaffected. For example, Firefox 3.5.5 works completely fine, Office 2007 works fine, Process explorer works fine, along with most of my non-Windows programs. What I’m starting to guess is that there is some problem with my graphics related to parts of the operating system and programs close to it, but I’m not sure.

Most of the time, simply restarting the computer doesn’t solve the problem. I system restore to provide a temporary fix by going into Safe Mode and starting system restore from there... Read more

My background is 3840 by 1080. I have 55 pictures in a Dropbox account of that size. When I click on one of the last ones, to make it background, or just to look at it... the scroll bar on the right goes right back up to the top.

Windows 8 and 8.1 did the same. It is so annoying, to always have to down to the bottom of the folder manually.

Windows 7 never did this. I wish they would make it as Windows 7 handled this..!

Hello, I really hope one of you can help...

My desktop PC has suddenly developed a niggling little problem that means it is all but useless now. When opening most programs, IE, Windows Explorer and Opera the screen gets caught in a juddering motion that seems to act like the software is switching between Restore, Full Screen and Maximize functions, at the rate of about 6 switches a second. As you can probably imagine, this means the computer is more or less useless, and it's getting very frustrating. I've called the shop where we bought it, and got the usual "It's not our problem, try system restore, or restore factory settings". Tried system restore about 3 days ago, and no matter where I try to restore to it's having none of it, and then I got stop in a lovely "Packard Bell recovery program (which includes the system restore program)" loop, that stops actually being able to boot into Windows as it goes on a restarting loop, again, and again and again, until all of a sudden it'll boot. For this reason, System Restore is now switched off so I can continue getting into Windows. Programs not affected are Media Player, Photoshop, Outlook and RealPlayer plus others.

I assume this is a software issue, but I would really like to be able to sort this without having to wipe the whole computer.... Please can anybody help!

Dear Tech guys,
I badly need your support. Day before yesterday (01-Aug-06) night I upgraded the yahoo toolbar and used their norton anti spy to scan. Then I shut down the system and started to work the next day. Every thing is perfectly ok except for one thing. In Windows Explorer, on any folder or drive if I double click or open I get a crash. If I do explore then there is no problem.

Below is the dialog that comes whenever we double click or open (for eg: on C:\ or any folder in the left side pane of the windows explorer. If I just keep expanding the + of the tree no problem, only on clicking the item to open the following error occurs.)

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

program: C:\Windows\Explorer.exe

This Application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

I am running on Windows XP SP 2. I dont have google toolbar. I have yahoo tool bar installed. I have tried uninstalling it and installing it again and other combinations as well.

I have also tried sfc /scannow as well. It did not work.

It doesnt look like any adware or spyware (yahoo's norton spyware had done a complete run and no problems in the system as reported by them).

What should I do now to get back to normal operation of windows explorer.

Thanks and Regards,
Naga Kumar S

Answer:Windows Explorer Runtime Error (not related to Internet Explorer)

I would un-install the Yahoo Toolbar and then put Google Toolbar in, Then I would try to download .NET framework 2.0

and install it. If it tells you that you already have it re-install it anyway.

About a week ago, I turned on my laptop to find that Internet Explorer was freezing and crashing. When it crashed, I wouldn't get the normal Windows error reporting message, but instead Windows Explorer froze and I was forced to restart. When I restarted -- stupidly, more than 10 times in 2 hours -- the first few times, a few ad windows and anti-virus downloader screens popped up. I scanned with Housecall, and an infection with Mal-vundo came up that it couldn't repair. I downloaded SpyBot, AdAware, and AVG free, and not much popped up that I knew how to fix other than a dat file called __c001BA5E, and a few others. I tried to delete these on reboot, and it seemed to work for awhile. Soon enough, though, both explorers were crashing again. I've tried to avoid rebooting, but I can't help it. I'm not sure what else to do at this point. I don't remember seeing this when I first started Windows 7 so I must've accidentally enabled it somewhere. Don't know what it's called, so I couldn't do a proper search for it.

Basically, this tooltip shows up next to the scrollbar as I scroll up and down. It updates to show Explorer's topmost file in view, and I have no use for it.

Where can I disable this feature?

The scroll bars at side of pages, be they Word, email (uses word) or explorer start jumping up and down for no reason and render programmes unuseable. Its settled just for the moment. Going back to basics, PSU giving steady o/p volts - have checked for over-heating - fans all working - PC clean out, but fact that has just stopped is a coincidence because it started again briefly a few moments ago. Has anyone any ideas please......before it goes unstable again. Many thanks.

this is my godmother's system so for the most part i've had to peice together the exact issues but from what she's told me internet explorer and windows explorer crashes constantly while she is online gaming (e.g. and i have noticed on a previous visit that her homepage was indeed changed without her doing so.... now she has said that is has happened before... another thing is that the pc is running slow over all but imo i don't really see it.... i have so far run the online scans as well as her av that runs daily (avast)... also she has run spyware doctor and ccleaner as well as reg mechanic.... now the only firewall she had which is listed in one of these logs, was the windows firewall, i installed comodo personal firewall right after the scans were done.... she has a habit of running 2 av's at one time (which was the case up til today) and i have put a stop to this however i'm sure there's bits and peices left on her system from norton, avg and trend micro pc cillin..... if you have any advice where to look to get these fully off that would be greatly appreciated but not the main concern right now....

i have gone online and gotten instructions on how to remove some of the tracking cookies that panda pointed out... those would be Zedo, Mediaplex, Casalemedia and Fastclick... but i have not done anything to remove them yet, i thought i'd talk to you guys first....

any and all help is greatly appreciated and thank you in advance...

there's this one thing I find windows explorer REALLY ANNOYING.

if I ever type the folder address wrong (missing a colon when my hands got sloppy) in the address bar, windows explorer automatically TURNS INTO internet explorer mode and does online search.

I don't even use IE any more except for automatic update. I wish there's a way windows explorer wouldn't automatically do it when I type the wrong folder.

You all know that if you open up windows explorer by clicking on a folder (For example: My Computer), and in the address bar you type in a URL, it goes to the web page, but in Internet Explorer.

Is there a way I can make it so when I enter a url into a folder's url box, it opens up Firefox with the web page instead?

The main reason is I'm trying to keep my sister from using IE since she keeps getting so much freakin adware and spyware with it. I have plugins and mods for firefox that block out ads so there's less chance of getting it.

I removed all the shortcuts and made firefox the default browser, however, my sister likes to just open my computer and enter her url in, and thus once again she avoids using Firefox.

Can somebody help me? x_x She's so freakin stubborn. Everytime I do an adware/spyware scan, 90% of it comes from her Temporary IE files.

Answer:Question involving Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer

Hi Reita
One suggestion would try to tweak the HTTP registry entry (back it up first with right click-export). There is a sub-key named "shell", open it, next one is named "open", last one is "command" . On the right pannel double-click on the value which is the path of IE, and tape in the path of Firefox. Close the box with OK and reboot. Now everytime you'll tape in an address using the HTTP protocol, the new command you entered will launch Firefox. You can do the same for the internet shortcuts (favorites), since their hidden extension is .url and you can change the way they open regarding the browser you use for. Go to the registry entry InternetShortcut and do the same steps as before. Take great care of what you do, assuming that you know what you doing. It worked fine for me, since my default FTP browser is not IE and I tweaked the registry entry for my convenience. Hope that will help..

Hi all,

I really hope someone can help me out here, as this is my work box, and it will take me about a week to get everything re-installed and configured if I have to format :-(

The problem is that if I try to open windows explorer or internet explorer, they immediately crash. I suspect that this is due to spyware / virus.

I have since upgraded from service pack 2 - 3 and run scans with McAfee, Avast and SpyHunter3. Can't find anything ...
All open / save dialog boxes work fine though ... which is luckily the only way i can work now ... through firefox

I've never posted on a help forum before, so please bear with me.

I have a Dell Studio 1749 laptop, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

Windows Explorer is not working. That is, Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer. It seemed like every forum I already checked this confused people. The only way I am able to communicate with you fine folks is to manually run Firefox using the Task Manager interface. Here are the things I have tried, and the things that I am incapable of trying, and why:

1.) I tried booting in safe mode. Windows Explorer still would not work.

2.) I tried booting with only the bare necessities through System Configuration (msconfig) by selecting Diagnostic Startup, but the problem still occurred when I would boot to my desktop.

3.) I tried doing a system restore to 3 days ago, before the problem ever occurred, but it simply didn't seem to take, as some software I installed just last night was still here when it booted. That was a weird one.

4.) I tried rebooting with a chkdsk /r, but I could not get this to work because in order to set that up, you need to be able to run the command prompt with administrative privileges, which I cannot because Windows Explorer is not working. (I feel that maybe there is some secret way to do a chkdsk without needing the command prompt, but I couldn't find instructions anywhere.)

5.) I tried uninstalling the software that I believe to be the culprit, which happens to be Skype. Last night I received some pictu... Read more

Hey, I am having problems with my other computer suddenly closing both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer applications, such as Control Panel, My Computer, etc...(Windows XP Home Edition)
When i click on either one, lets say the my computer icon, a pop up of the my computer folder thing flashes for a split second then disappears, the computer freezes for about a second, shows only the desktop, then a few seconds later the icons start appearing on my desktop and my start taskbar comes back. The screen is back to normal with no lag, but the my computer pop up is no longer there. The same thing happens with internet explorer, but it just happens alot quicker.
Does anyone know what could possibly be the problem of this, and maybe how to fix it? Thank You in advance.

Hello everyone,

My fiance just got her first Windows 10 laptop recently, and the behaviour of Explorer is driving her nuts. The navigation pane on the left will not scroll horizontally (neither with a horizontal scrollbar nor auto-scrolling as it did in previous versions of Windows), or at least we can't find the right option to enable either:

This is pretty unusable as it is, so I'm hoping that someone can suggest something. She will switch to an alternate file manager (we've seen recommendations for Classic Shell and xplorer2) if necessary, but would prefer to stick with the Windows 10 file explorer if possible.

Thanks to everyone!

Answer:How to get horiz scrolling in Navigation Pane in Win 10 Explorer

linuxgarou said:

Welcome to TenForums @linuxgarou

One suggestion would be to hover the mouse over the dividing line between the navigation pane and the list of files (it's the right-hand edge of the navigation pane's vertical scroll bar). When the pointer becomes a double-headed arrow you can click-and-drag to make the navigation pane wider.

I have mine set to about twice the width of the one in your screenshot.

Edit: and so apparently does Ztrucker in the following post.
