Can anyone recommend a Application & file transfer program?

Question: Can anyone recommend a Application & file transfer program?

I have a broken laptop that has everything on it. I did back up to an
external hard drive Segate using the Bounce Back Express. When I get
my laptop fixed, I would like to transfer application/programs from laptop
to desktop, both have XP Professional. I know I will need program with
this data cable, but which one. My last questions would be can I transfer
programs/files with that program from a laptop with XP Professional to
Windows 7. Buying a new laptop within 10 days.
Please Advise.

Preferred Solution: Can anyone recommend a Application & file transfer program?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can anyone recommend a Application & file transfer program?

Transfering your files back depends on the method of how you have backed them up.
If you have done it using Bounce Back Express, maybe this application has option for restoring the files?

Also if you want to transfer application files from XP to Win 7 this will not work.
You will need to reinstall all applications on Windows 7 and then transfer your other files such as video, music, pictures etc.

I am sick and tired of attempting to figure out Window's faulty file sharing system so I've decided to look elsewhere for a file sharing solution.

What program would you guys recommend? I want to be able to share files between all computers on the network but also watch video files without actually transferring them over.

Please do not recommend any tips on how to fix my Windows file sharing setup, I'm looking for a 3rd party program at this point.

Answer:Please recommend a LAN file sharing program that can stream videos

The easiest way is to get a router that has USB ports included. You then put your external hard drive to it and all of the computers connected to that router will be able to stream videos, etc. For a Netgear router which I'm using, the path is \\readyshare\USB_Storage. You can see this path in the network pane of Windows explorer as long as network discovery and file and printer sharing is enabled. You don't need to worry about these settings as long as you choose your connection as "Home" profile and not "public"

I can't help you with 3rd party software since I mainly use the method above to stream videos.

so i am running out of space on my primary drive, and i want to possibly make my sl;ave the primary and drop the primary i have now ( its only 20 gigs) is it possible to put all my program files on a dvd, and reinstall windows the replace them? or would it be best to just reinstall the programs as i go along?

Answer:program file transfer?

What you're proposing will not work.  Programs install to the Program Files directory, but they also put files elsewhere, notably in the C:\windows directory. You could use a program like Norton Ghost to copy the entire hard drive - you would have more success with that.

Does anyone know a program where you can see the amount of data you are transferring and what speed the transfer is going at over LAN connection?

This would really useful espically for lanparties where file sharing is so common

I would have thought that Windows would have changed this already, but i guess it hasn't been much an issue

Answer:Lan File Transfer Program

As I recall, stuff like StatBar and other desktop stats deals will show traffic since boot time plus current speed.

I'm trying to use theXP File Transfer Wizard program to move files from my old (Win98SE) computer to my new computer(XP Home Edition). The cable is a new 9 pin db transfer cable I bought for this purpose. Both computers are Compaq brand. I made the floppy transfer program disc per instructions in the Transfer Wizard and then installed it on the old computer. Each screen matches fine on the two computers until I get to the screen for automatically finding Serial ports. The program searches on both machines but can't find the serial port on either computer? I've tried manually entering ports on each computer but that doesn't work either? It's like they aren't connected?
I don't have a CD burner on the old computer but have one on the new one. Other than using floppies, is there any other way to transfer files I want to keep?

Answer:Using XP File Transfer Program

was the serial cable you got labeled as a null transfer cable? if not it won't work. does the old pc have a nic installed? if so just network the computers and transfer that way. if the old pc doesn't have a nic, trade the transfer cable for a nic, install it, get a crossover cat5 cable and set up a network between the two. everything will transfer much faster that way.

I need a program that i can have running on my computer and be able to download files that i choose from another computer. I have a pretty big project file that i need to get to some other people for critiquing. Some people live half way across the world so i am hoping i can get i program that i can leave running on my computer while i sleep but allow them to download it to their computer. This needs to be a direct download to their computer, so i does not go through a server or any of that. But i would also really like but is not required, a program that has features so i can allow certain users to download files.

Answer:Need a file transfer program.

An FTP server/client setup would probably be the way to go. The server in this case doesn't mean you need a separate computer acting as a server but the software.. Do a Google search on FTP software. The FTP server software can be setup with different permissions for different users that would let you choose which files or folders the users can get could also try a program called ACFile Server -

I am building a new computer as soon as my parts arrive and am going to put Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on it. I have a laptop that has all my programs and files that I would like to transfer, but it is running Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit. I doubt I have even 2 programs that would not be 64 bit compatible (if any), if that matters. Is this possible? Would love programs to jump over too, but if that isn't possible, what is the best way to at least transfer the files? I have an external to use, no USB A to A cable or anything, but could buy one if needed.

What exactly are you trying to download? I find IRC a great way to download rare or old anime. Also, bittorrent is rising. You can find everything off of bittorrent, however you need to find a "tracker." You can't search for torrent files, you need to find a website that hosts the links. I basically use bittorrent for anime. The problem with bittorrent, is it needs "seeds," someone who is a pure uploader. Hope I helped.

My only thought is you can setup an FTP and transfer that way not hard to configure but it would be a pain for expanding unless the FTP was a blanket C:\ setup.

Seems like alot of steps thought.

I am looking for a good free program that will help speed up files that I want to move around. I am having a problem with Windows 10 getting stuck on the Calculating time to move files screen, for large files. Sometimes i will wait 10 minutes and it still says its calculating. I tried using Teracopy which says it will become the default utility for transfering files but it doesn't work for some reason, I have also tried Copy Handler, which said the same thing that it would be the default file transfer utility, but when i try to copy a file it does it via Windows explorer, so for some reason these programs aren't incorporating into Windows, can someone help me please?

I have a client that dials into over 30 sites and does file transfers for some corporations. What I am looking for is a program that automatically dials into each site and transfers files back to the server. Then dials into Corporates machine imports\exports and the files exported from them is pushed back into the sites stores. With over 30 sites to do this, it takes about 7 hours using PCAW. I had tried using PCAW scripts awhile back and did not work so well. I am just trying to see if there are programs that can automatically do this or what programs I could use to code a program to do this. Any help is appreciated.

Hey, thanks for taking the time to view this.

I'm looking for advice/recommendations for finding an automated local file transfer program.

Here's the gist of my problem:

At work I have a root folder that all newly completed work is stored in. The work is for multiple clients with each file containing the name of the client the work is for. At the end of the day I have to manually copy all of client X's files and paste them into his archive folder on another drive. I then have to go back and copy all of client Y's files and post them into his archive folder on the other drive. I have to do this for multiple people. It's time consuming and some days I forget to do it.

I need a program that will automatically run at the end of the day and pull all the files with client X's name in the filename and put them in his folder, and do the same thing with the other clients. Everything is local, no FTP server or web-based stuff.

Unfortunately the program I work with that generates the files only dumps all the work in one root folder. I wish I could point it at multiple folders based on filenames, but I can't.

So, any suggestions? Thanks again for your time.

(Oh, and my OS is Windows 7, but I need something that's compatible with XP since that's what most of my co-workers have and they need the program too)

Answer:Automated local file transfer program?

Hi Dustin

Give Karen's Replicator a go as its free and will do multiple jobs, so you could set it up for various clients and move them to specific backup folders, plus you can schedule the jobs for specific times of the day.

You may also see another backup application HERE that may do what you want.

The problem:

Me and a few friends have been creating demo video's of card magic. We have been having problems sending these large files to each other via MSN Messenger. I find this program very unreliable, but my friends like it due to the simplicity of it. The transfers do not always complete and pisses me off because I have to waste more time and bandwidth to send it again. The video sizes have been quite large. We are not interested in changing the size of the files.

I want to know if there is an easy to learn file transfer program that supports auto-resume that I could recommend to my buddies to try. I tried to convince them on using an FTP client, but they didn't like it. The solution must have auto-resume in case the transfer fails.

Thanks for reading.

Answer:What is the best user friendly file transfer program?

Depends on how technically able you are ( or someone is ). You could setup a bittorrent site on your local system, then just send them the html link for it through the chat system. Once they have a bittorrent client installed, it'd be as simple as sending through the chat client, but with the normal benefits of bittorrent.

I'm looking for a good program to directly transfer a file between two systems. Kind of like how many chat clients can do. I just found out that my aunt has been transferring important business information via SendSpace. She thought just compressing it with a password in 7-Zip was good enough. (It may use AES-256, but it still has its limits... Especially given that she wasn't even using a very strong password.) Now she has had some accounts broken into and credit card information stolen. I don't know if that is the culprit, but it's obviously a weak link that should be eliminated. (Plus I think I could use such a program from time to time myself.) I've thought about something less direct such as setting up a sftp server using a keyfile or something, but what I think she really needs is something much more direct -- she needs to be able to just directly send the file as effortlessly as possible really.

In particular though and one of the reasons I'm asking here rather than just trying to google it to death is because I specifically would like to look for something relatively efficient, free, and preferably an open source project (but the open source part is more just a preference for how things get developed and I can live with a closed project if it's good and free.) Security is a nice plus, but not necessarily required as I've already explained to her about better passwords and might even give her a real encryption program later. I w... Read more

I wondered if any of you out there use any helpdesk software that is aimed at IT services companies where by you can have multiple clients, customers and asset's assigned to each. Obviously also allowing the usual logging of calls, assigning priority levels, reporting etc.

I have used Spiceworks in the past and loved it, but it is not reallt geared towards multiple clients and is more for an in house helpdesk.

I recently got Windows 10, and found that the email application that came with it was pretty bad. I replaced it with Mailbird, which billed itself as the best email application for Windows 10, but I have had problems with that as well. I have a corporate email account for which I want to use an application other than Google, Yahoo, etc. What would you recommend? My wishes are as follows:

1. Be able to search individual files (incoming, outgoing, trash) separately. With Mailbird it will only search all files together.

2. Be able to delete an entire trash folder at once. With Mailbird, for some reason I get two trash folders, and when I delete an email, some go in one folder and some in the other. One of those folders I can delete all at once. With the other, however, I have to delete each one individually, which sends those emails to the othert trash folder, which I then have to delete again (all at once).

3. Be able to organize folders by date, sender, etc.

4. Stability with fonts, sizes, and the ability to increase the size of the image.

5. Immediate downloading of emails and attachments (Mailbird can be frustratingly slow sometimes).

Thanks for your thoughts.

OK first off I know writing down passwords or storing them in a central location is not always the best option. For the most part I have no issues remembering passwords.

I seem to have problems with the stupid security questions they make you setup. I don't like security questions, to me they are always things that people might ask you in a conversation, What was your pets name, where did you grow up, etc.

So I always make up stupid answers to these things. Then 6 months late when I re-install the OS and connect to a site where I know my dam username and password. It doesn't recognize my PC and prompts me for these security questions and I never remember what smart a$$ answer I made at the time.

Basically some sort of password keeper application would be nice for a limited number of items. But I have no idea what programs are good or if there even are any.

Anyone have any suggestions or other methods to keep track of secure information?

Answer:Recommend a Password keeper application?

I used two different portable password mangers but finally ditched them, one was keepass the other I forget ATM. They can definitely be useful, especially in situations where a keylogger may be employed.

Adding one quick thought though, whenever you are prompted to answer a security question, it is best to not truthfully answer it but instead to use the same bogus answer for any and every question no matter what it is answering.

Can anyone recommend any application that will repair Outlook pst and ost files (preferably free )?

I have recently replaced the disks in my laptop and reinstalled Windows XP SP2.

Although the pst and ost files have been backed up and restored Outlook now only sees a few of the large number of emails in the files.

My laptop is also (supposed) to be connecting to Exchange server. Could problems with this connection be preventing Outlook opening the files correctly? Calendar and Tasks have disappeared

Fortunately I still have the undisturbed files on the old discs and at least two backed up copies.

Thanks for any replies.

One of the DJs I knew in high school used to use Virtual Turntables by Carrot Innovations but that was a good 3-4 years ago, I imagine it'd still work and he seemed to like but you could also allow multiple instances of foobar and use that as with certain plugins you can change the tempo without altering the pitch and other interesting things (though I'm sure there are winamp plugins that do the same).

Can anybody recommend an OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program that can do what I need it to do?

Here's the situation: Over a period of time, I figured out the chords to about 280 songs. Yeah, I know you can get the chord progressions to songs online, but they tend to be very inaccurate. I worked on each song until I was positive it was exactly right. (It made sense to do it since I was getting paid.) And I wrote down each song, by hand, one song per sheet of paper.

Now I want a permanent, neat record of all of these chord progressions, so I can print them out as requested.

So I scanned the song sheets I had written, with the idea of then translating them to text via an OCR program, and then formatting them in Word.

The problem is the OCR programs I tried. First I tried FreeOCR. It can?t handle handwriting at all - only typewriting. So then I tried SimpleOCR. This involved a lengthy exercise, the intent of which was for SimpleOCR to ?learn? my handwriting. Towards this end, I wrote down by hand a newspaper article of about 500 words, and then scanned it and submitted it to SimpleOCR for analysis. This involved proofreading by me of SimpleOCR?s analysis.

But SimpleOCR?s performance was barely better than FreeOCR?s. Here is the problem, as I understand it:

Older OCR systems yielded limited accuracy because they simply compared scanned images of characters to stored bitmap images of known characters rendered in various specific fonts. Mor... Read more

Answer:recommend appropriate OCR program?

I scan things like that as images, jpegs.
They can't be altered but they can be printed out as needed.

A large part of the company I work for's business is telesales for want of a better word. Names are sourced through various means in order to contact them initially via phone. I help maintain, what we call, the database which is an 8 headed column list.

Since this list is simply a list, we use Excel as there are no relationships between lists reqd. It also helps in it's simplicity since all levels of pc skills come walking thru the door with staff turnaround. I also use ASAP utilities which is an enormous help in standardising the data input. I'm happy to continue using Excel but the "user" problems it gives me, I'm just so fed up spending hour after hour straightening it out (I know, get the users straightened out first - in my dreams). The 'sort', 'find', 'filter' etc are ok for me but to others, they're obviously blind since when checking to see if a name they have sourced is on the list, more often than not they don't see it. Again I know this is a user problem, but it's a consistent one over the last 3 - 4 years that makes me wonder if Excel is the best program.

Since some staff have walked off & sold our list, I've placed it on a non-networked pc. I try and maintain an 'a' drive password protection via the bios. I try and maintain a modify password to stop people saving changes but sometimes, time doesn't allow and it maybe a few weeks before a problem is spotted (just ... Read more

At the moment I'm using F Backup4, but it's mirror image is not a mirror image because it doesn't delete what you delete.
My requirement are for a new backup program are.
I only want to back up user accounts.
I would like it to do a mirror image, That adds and deletes if that what has been done since the last backup: so a true mirror image.
I would like to see backup exactly as on my disc, so a picture in my backup folder should be a picture and not a encrypted file.
I would prefer it free but if that i would have to buy is recommended, I will consider it.

Answer:Please recommend a backup program

Try EZBackitup.. free and so far I have found no snags or nasty surprises.
Works from a window like Int. Explorer, or a CD burning window.
You choose which folder or file and drag it to your list. Any order will do, just keep adding
You choose the destination and give the process a name. Click on a green arrow and the rest is done for you.
By default it will overwrite a file that has been changed since the last time, but will not delete anything missing from the backup list on the latest run.
It will ignore any file which has not changed since the last time, and will not make duplicates all over the place.
I use it regularly for all data. I don't even try to use it for OS or whole drives of folders. For that sort of backup I use Acronis.
The first time may take a while as it prepares and copies a full list, but the second and later runs will be very fast indeed unless you have piles of fresh data since the first time.

I'm running XP HE, with Zone Alarm free and Avast! AV, which I'm both pleased with.

I'd also like a realtime anti-spyware/trojan scanner - I was thinking of purchasing Adaware SE Plus, but I'd like a few opinions before I part with almost $40

If I could take liberties whilst I'm here, I'm also looking for a programme which would copy my C drive so that in the event of HDD failure, I could then restore it. I've heard Norton Ghost is very good, though tricky to use, but I'm a little reluctant to use any of their products after having had a bad experience using their security software!

Thanks for any suggestions

Thank you all for your support, for starters.
I was wondering if you could recommend me a good freeware program to convert DVD's (private copies, not commercial ones) to AVI's files.
Ive tried AutoGK but its sloooooow, at least 3 hours per DVD.
Have to say i would prefer to be an easy program, because im not much of a specialist here. AutoGK was great, just a few buttons to push and that's it, but slooooowwww.....

Thank you all in advance.:wave

Answer:Recommend DVD to AVI freeware program?

I use AutoGK as well. It's slow, but the quality is very high. Also, you don't have to convert videos while you're awake. Do it while you're asleep. I could care less if it takes 8 hours.

It all depends on which technology you wish to use.If you're going down the Microsoft route then have a look at the free Microsoft Visual Web Deverloper 2008. click here for details. If you're going down the PHP route then you could simply use Windows Notepad or something like Eclipse (click here for details). In any case, I would strongly advise that you invest in a good book on CSS in the first instance..

What's wrong with going for the standard - FS2002 (or hang on a bit and get 2003). Check the spec of your machine though as FS requires quite a fair spec to get the best out of it.

Hi again everyone!

Thanks again for all the help you gave me and my dad in the past! We appreciate you!!!

Well, I am asking the following question:

Which anti-spyware program do you recommend?

Please let me also say that I have used the Ad-Aware 2007-2008 for two years.

I just noticed that they are offering Ad-Aware Pro for "free." Yet when I tried to download it, it now says I must accept one of their special deals [their special deals require I use my credit card to do a "trial basis" etc.].

Their "special" program is called "Getting Ad-Aware Plus With TrialPay."

I also just discovered that their "new" version [2009] is the exact same download file and I take it will also ask that I give my credit card info and do a "trial" basis on a new program they are soliciting.

I suppose I am asking if anyone here knows of an anti-spyware/adware program that I can download and use [and I am hoping it would be free].

I guess I am willing to pay for a program too if I must.

Happy New Year everyone!!!

It's me,

PS Has anyone else experienced this new "Ad-Aware 2009 Pro" scam?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.. I didn't really know what to put it under..

I was upgrading my system, from XP to Vista. I tried the 'keep all my current files and settings' option for the upload, but it wouldn't let me use it.
So, I used the file and settings transfer wizard to transfer all my files to my external hard drive. Then I deleated my files on my computer - no point in having two copies. (I now know how stupid this idea was).
When I had successfuly uploaded Widows vista onto my computer, I found that it didn't actualy have the files and settings transfer wizard - it had something called 'Easy Transfer' instead. Easy tranfer is incompatible with the File and settings transfer wizard.

So, now all my files are sitting on my Hard drive in .dat files, and I don't know how to get them back.

Help me please.

Answer:File and Settings Transfer Wizard vs. Easy Transfer

you could download and install FAST to complete the transfer. i know that solves the problem when migrating from one XP /SP combination to another, perhaps it will work for an XP to Vista migration too.

this link is for v2.6, but 3.0 is also available on the site.

I have 2 PCs, both running XP Pro SP2.
One is mine and one is my wife?s.
Both are connected to a Linksys BEFSR41 v3 router which is then connected to a cable modem.
Both can connect at high speed to the internet.
Both are on the same workgroup and have unique names.
They can see each other in the workgroup.
They can ping each other.
I can browse all shared drives in both directions from both PCs.
Everything seems to be working perfectly except if I try and transfer a file from my PC to my wife?s it takes approx 2 minutes per MB. However if I transfer a file the other way it works flawlessly and at high speed.

I have checked that all the required services are running and that there is only one master browser.

I have changed all the cables and tried different ports on the router.

NetMeter shows a maximum transfer speed of about 250kbps and the networking tab in task manager shows a network utilization of only 1%

Any advice would be gratefully received, as this is slowly driving me insane.

Answer:Slow file transfer in one direction, quick transfer the other way!

You should try data transfer using something other than WInbdows Networking. Set up some FTP server software for example. This way you can see if the problem is with the network or with Windows.

I have setup a shared drive so I can access my files with my Android devices but the transfer speed is very slow around 500 KB - 1.5 MB per second. My QNAP NAS that also using SMB is transfering very fast up to 12 MB/s. Can i increase transfer speed of SMB?

Answer:Increase transfer speed of windows file transfer (SMB)

Android smb shares are always slow.

I use Fast File Transfer which when in wifi direct mode gets up to 5 MB/s but have never managed to get more. This uses http protocol rather than smb.

Fast file transfer app is in google playstore and easy to use. Nothing is needed on pc side - all done from a browser.

In the end, usb tethering is quickest way.

This isn't specific to Windows 8.  It's more of a hardware issue in that my new computer won't run an Acronis rescue CD.  It generated a "Cannot load Linux kernel" error so I burned a new boot CD.  It won't run that one either but my other computer boots from both of them.
The new computer also boots from my Linux Mint DVD and my GParted CD so it seems to just have a beef with Acronis rescue CD.
It would be great if I could fix this but after two tries it seems hopeless.
I have seen a lot of other (free!) disk imagers since I got Acronis but I never needed to try any of them.
Can you recommend one that does basically what Acronis does?  Free would be a big factor in my decision.  Thanks.

Answer:Please recommend a disk image program

Here are 3 examples of disk imaging software:
    1.  Macrium Reflect -
    2. R-Drive Image -
    3. Norton Ghost -
Currently using Macrium Reflect and prefer to use a flash drive to boot into the imaging software but I've heard good reviews about all three of them.

Lately I noticed I have too much manuals, ebooks and plenty of stuff in PDF format. It is becoming very confusing to organize it by folders.

So If anyone here could plz recommend some sort of organizer for all these files, also plz mention why you recommend it and what are the advantages over other programes you used.

Thanx in advance.

Answer:Recommend a program to organize PDFs

The way you are doing it will be the best. Have a folder for Manuals, then go by manufacturer and further by product. ebooks do it by author and possible by year as well. The same can be done with just about every other PDF file you have.

The thing is unless you create a data base there isnt going to be a program that will do what you want. Cause everythign at some point has to be stored in a folder. So unless you figure out a way to name them in a specific way your best option is going to be go by the folder method.

After you are done use Excel or something to create yourself a data base of what you do have in PDF format for quick reference. Can even put a location and that on there as well.

I am in a bit of a pickle and would greatly appreciate if anyone could recommend disk imaging software for a friend.

Requirements: Freeware, compatible with Windows 2000

Preferences: Backup to and restore from external HD, easy to use, creates its own rescue CD or DVD (no floppy required, I pray)

I am well aware of Norton Ghost and the excellence of Acronis True Image, but money is an issue so I'm looking for absolute freeware. I have already downloaded every program from Majorgeeks that seems to fit the bill, but I would greatly appreciate your input on which software to install on my friend's Jurassic PCs. I would especially value your comments if you have actually used the program to restore an image, since one can never know how good the software is until it completes the second, more important part of what it is intended to do.

You will be well satisfied with either EASEUS Todo or Macrium Reflect. I'm an Acronis fan myself but I've tested these programs and they both work well, though I haven't specifically tested in W2K. From what you say you have probably already downloaded them.

Hi there

Please please can you recommend a decent burning software that I can burn avi files & mpegs directly to DVD so they will play in a home DVD player.

I am going round in circles round the net, but anyway I will cry no more. I dont want this for free either I will pay if its decent although If its cheap then thats a good bonus :

So Burning software that will burn avi to dvd and be watchable on home player.

Good value if possible.

I am running Vista 64.

Thanks very much, any help will be much appreciated

Answer:please recommend good program for burning

OUCH! Vista 64...I was going to recommend either Pinnacle Studio or Premiere Elements until I saw the 64.

You need to know what codec was used to make the avi and see if a program you are interested in will handle that avi. For instance, most if not all will handle the DV avi but only certain ones will handle (import) a divx avi.

If you ever go back to 32 bit OS then Premiere Elements. I can't make a recommendation other than from my posterior as to function on Vista 64.

Answer:Can anyone recommend an eBay sniping program?

I would recommend using a web-based sniping service rather than software so you do not have to worry about leaving your computer on, problems with your Internet connection, ISP, power, etc.

You will have to submit your eBay login information, some eBay users are not comfortable doing that, understandably so. However, you have to do the same thing using software, so the only other solution would be to snipe manually. I doubt most people have time to do that however.

Two sniping services that I have successfully used are and Both offer free snipes along with a fee-based service. There are a few more out there that you could try as well.

I have win 7 ultimate on my pc and recently purchased a new a-data 640gb hard drive and put about 200gb of data on it

So probably due to my own fault it crashed and i kept getting the 'you must format this drive to use it' error, I might have caused it by accidentally unplugging out the drive without safely stopping it

Anyway I ran a checkdisk or similar command from command prompt as found on another forum, that repaired it so it is now visible as a drive in my computer.

Luckily it still knows how much data is on it because in my computer it says 200gb used blah blah blah

But the problem is that when I go into the drive there are no files on it bar one which has no extention, program to open it with, and has no properties

Someone told me zone alarm isin't any good really, or that its bad for some reason so I got rid of it.

Thanks all for any suggestions.

Answer:What free firewall program do you all recommend?

I personally prefer the Comodo Firewall

Firewall Download, Windows 7 Firewall Security, Firewall Protection for Windows 7

Is there any good program to manage TV series, movies, etc in divx format? Something like iTunes, but for videos?

Hey guys,

I need to get a remote computer to access a LAN and print to a network printer. I might be able to use RDP to do what I need to do, but I don't have enough information yet, so I'm planning on using VPN. Can anyone recommend me a simple to set up and use VPN program for this? I'm not averse to doing tons of configuring myself (which I might have to do, depending on how this LAN looks when I get there), but the connection is for someone decidedly not computer-saavy, so if there is a program where he can click the "work network" button instead of entering an IP, I would prefer to use that.

Any recommendations for programs to use or horror stories for programs to avoid? Thanks.

Teamviewer is the best for remote accessing a computer. As for remote printing, unless someone is on the other end to make sure that the printer is on, not out of ink, out of paper, does not jam, that would be hard to do, using remote connection between computers.

I am in need of a dependable email client. I use Firefox as my main browser and used to use Incredimail for my email. I found IM to be a huge resource hog and decided to try Thunderbird2. It was the only version I found to download. I find Thunderbird very limited and it really screws up the attachments I forward to others. Can anyone please recommend a functional and dependable email client? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Please recommend a DEPENDABLE email program

Try a great program called TheBat home edition,
from RitLabs.
They have been around for many years.

I am looking for a good program (free or shareware) that will allow me to demonstrate the nervous system and how each part of the brain controls what part of the body. For example, a movie that will allow me to "disable" a certain part of the brain and then try to interact with the "person" on the screen (by clicking the mouse on a certain body part, etc.) and see its reaction. Of course, I will be creating all of this (I don't want something already made). I would just like ideas on what program would be best to create this. Macromedia Flash MX is the only thing I can think of now. Do you have any more ideas?
Any comment would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much.

Guys, what have you all used that really does recover a PST password?

Doesn't matter if it costs money, but wanted to make sure it really works before buying something.

blackinches would like to know what is a good cd burning program to use. blackinches is getting sick of all the bloat that comes with nero. so blackinches would appreciate any good recommendations on good, better if it's free, cd burning software.

Answer:recommend a good cd burning program

What the shit? Why are you talking in third-person? This isn't an RPG.

Nero 6 is good. Nero 7 is a bit bloated, but there's a Nero 7 Lite. It still requires a valid key or whatever.

I can't think of any that are free though. I'd Google for you, but GJSNeptune is lazy.
