Computer screen goes blank after start-up

Question: Computer screen goes blank after start-up

I have a Dell computer that is about five years old and uses Windows XP. The problem I have is that I will turn on the computer, the Dell logo will appear, and then the screen goes blank right before the Windows load-up screen appears. I am able to access the system menu (F2 I think) as well as the Safe Mode screen (F8). I tried starting the computer in Safe Mode but that doesn't work. For what it's worth, the computer has had numerous problems lately. Sometimes it takes awhile to log in a user and then when the user is finally logged in, the icons don't appear right away. Also I've noticed that my internet has been crashing more often so this latest problem isn't a complete shock. So I was just wondering if there is anything I could do to fix the blank screen problem. Would changing the monitor make any difference?

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Computer screen goes blank after start-up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Computer screen goes blank after start-up

Hi Tony, welcome to TSF. If the problem that you are having isn't hardware related, the easiest way to fix it would be to completely wipe the hard drive reformat it and reinstall the operating system. Since it is booting to the logo screen then hardware doesn't appear to be the issue from the information you have given. Tell you what, let me ask you some specific questions for you to answer and I will do my best to help you troubleshoot and correct the problem.

Here are some questions for you to answer that will help me. Just answer them the best you can and if you dont know an answer its ok. If you already answered anything I'm asking in your first post just skip over it.

1). What kind of computer do you have? Laptop? Desktop? Dell, HP, Ect?
2). Whats your level of experience? Novice, intermediate, expert, or dont know squat?
3). What operating system are you using? Xp Home or XP Pro? Which Service pack SP1,2, or 3?
4). What antivirus are you using? What firewall if any?
5) Please tell us a little about your computer. How old is your computer? Hard drive size How much free space is on it?, processor size, ram, video card. Ect.
6). Do you have an Xp disk for this computer?
7). Does your computer have a floppy drive, CD drive, Ect.?
8). Do you have access to another working computer with an internet connection?
9). Did you noticed this problem occuring after installing anything recently?
10). Has your computer done a windows update recently?
11). Have you made any changes to the computer recently, hardware or software?
12). How is it connected to the internet? Wireless, wired? Cable, DSL?
and anything else that might help us help you. Remember we are trying to help from a forum so all we have to go on is what you can tell us.

I will monitor this thread throughout the day. If you resolve this problem on your own or with the info I provided please let me know so I can move on to other issues. Also please mark this thread solved using the thread tools option located at the top of this thread and selecting solved from the drop down menu when your computer is working correctly and you are through with this thread.

The other day my daughter told me her computer turned on fine, then the screen flashed on/off and she had the monitor adjustment icons showing on the screen (but they could not be adjusted). On the CPU the power light was on but you could not turn it off by holding in the button. If you pulled the power cord for a few minutes and then plugged it back in the power light came on, it tested the DVD Drive, but it did not run through any start up, the CD did not run and no display other than described above was on the screen. Can not seem to get it to boot for the recovery CD. Any idea what might be wrong? It is an emachines 2800+ AMD Athlon XP Processor.

Hi there,

I have a self made PC with Winfast Foxconn MB, AMD64 3000+ socket 754,
ATI 9250 AGP.

I installed everything, connected the cables but the computer does not turn on. I receive a blank screen and nothing else.

The MB and proccesor worked previously on a different system that I have upgraded.

What can it be?

The FANs are working, I can not turn it off from the power button.

Please help me.

Answer:My computer does not start, blank screen

If you get no beeps Id suspect a bad connection... I have seen this on the CPU. Simply remove it and reseat it. I have also seen bad AMD boards do that. I saw on two seperape occasions exactly what you describe... if I let them sit there for 5 minutes to warm up and then restart them they worked. In that case the problem could be cold solder connections somewhere on the mobo. Not a good situation as most computer users dont have the skill or equipment to find that type of problem.

Just a black screen despite all the lights on the front lightint up. the bit where i enter my password and then windows usually loads....wont load. Its just a blank screen. My computer stopped working yesterday. I'm only able to type this up in Safe Mode right now.

Basically, when the computer starts, there's garbled text. Mostly, scattered rows of lower case 'a' with hyphens over them. As the computer is starting up, more garbled text appears, though it's still mostly lower case 'a'.

The Windows XP boot up screen appears, which looks completely fine. No graphical errors at all. However, once it's through, I get stuck with a blank screen.

***
A few days before the crash, I had been getting a few errors ONLY when playing World of Warcraft. The computer would freeze and little purple triangles would scatter on my screen. I'm not sure if that's relevant or not, but it was shortly after the second occurrence that the computer has ended up as it is now. I thought it might be related to the video card (NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT), so I updated the driver. That hasn't helped at all.

Thank you.

Answer:Computer won't start- garbled text followed by blank screen

Try uninstalling the video card driver and reinstalling.

Then try taking out the card, cleaning the pads with a pencil eraser and removing any dust. Then re-seat the card.

Hi, I have Lenovo G560 laptop with Windows 7 Home Basic OS. Its about 1 year old and its functioning well. However, the past one week the monitor is BLANK but the computer is working perfectly. I ensured that the computer is working correctly by connecting to to the Sony LCD TV through HDMI slot. 1. Wondering what is the problem with the display. The display is just blank/black when switched on.2. When connected to LCD TV through HDMI, the Windows starting screen (where the Windows 7 logo is played and displayed) is not appearing on LCD TV and it displays the Login screen straight away. The non-appearance of the Windows 7 logo is an issue? Is the loading of the OS not proper and due to which the monitor is blank? Or the LCD TV does not support displaying the Windows 7 starting splash screen?3.What I have do to bring my laptop screen back to life?!!!!4. Otherwise the computer is working perfectly able to connect to internet as normally I do (all now through the LCD TV). Do I need to check anything inside BIOS? I tried pressing FN + F8 function key at the restart of the laptop but the BIOS wont come up on the LCD TV? Am I pressing wrong keys? Please suggest! with thanks and regards,KrishnaChennai, India

Answer:Lenovo G560: Computer working well but blank screen appears from start

hi Krishna_Lenovo,

Welcome to the Lenovo Community.

Regarding your questions:
1. Is your HDMI setup to one single display only? If you're not set to clone mode, this is normal. You can try turning the laptop ON without the HDMI plugged-in to the TV to revert the display to the laptop or boot into the BIOS (press F2 upon boot up), when you're in, go to the Configuraton Tab then change Power on Display to set the default display. (you may need to unplug the HDMI cable out of the laptop first)

2. Before this problem occured, was it displaying the "Windows 7 Logo" on the LCD TV via HDMI? If you follow step 1 and the Windows 7 logo comes up on the laptop, there's a possible chance that a Windows Update got pushed through that changed this setting. What you can do is to update your Video card Driver:

NVIDIA Display DriverIN3VDO13WW6.exe97.2 MB

 and/or

Intel Onboard Graphics DriverIN2VDO50WW5.exe32.0 MB

3. Follow step 1 or press the Windows Key + P and choose clone display and test.

If the problem persists, you will need to do a System Restore to undo any changes or updates that were probably got installed into the computer. You will need to do this under Safe Mode (to access safe mode, you need to continuosly press F8 during startup).

Let me know if you get any errors.

Cheers

I have here my Mother in Laws C670-14D and its developed an issue whereby when you power up the screen is blank. it does have backlight and you hear the windows startup sound that you get before you login as windows starts up.

I can see the screen if I start in safe mode, in fact I'm using the PC in safe mode as I type this.

I did hae a similar problem in the past with another Toshiba laptop and that was windows 8, the issue was connected with power save settings but I've tried all of those and no luck. Also tried the remove battery suggestions, nothing has worked.

I'm guessing windows has done an update that is causing this but I'm at a loss and google has turned up nothing.

Running Windows 10 Home edition 64 bit

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance

Steve

Hi

I was using the laptop as usual when i think there may have been some virus activity - reason i say this is that my virus scanner closed down unexpectedly. I could not restart it from program files.

I restarted the laptop.

After the bios menu goes i get a blank screen with a flashing cursor - windows will not start.

I have done the following:
1)Create a bootable USB drive with Window XP recovery Console - on booting with this i can see three drives C:, D: as SDA? I can see the content of these drives so it appears as though my HD is working. I ran a fixmbr and fixboot but this did not resolve the issue.
2)Create a bootable USB Kaspersky virus scan - ran this without issue - it found a few issue (non on the disk boot sector) which i fixed.

One option was to copy off files from the laptop and then start it in recovery mode - So Itried to run the the laptop into recovery mode by hold down the 0 key on startup - the bottom of the screen then displays ***HDD Recovery mode *** and nothing happens.

Any help - further options would be greatly appreciated.

My 1 year Warranty expired a few month back so cannot send it in for repair.

Thanks

Answer:NB200 Won't start post bios screen - blank screen with flashing cursor

I would try to scan for virus & malware with more than one virus canner, not just Kaspersky but also perhaps 2-3 more. Try Malwarebytes' antivirus and "superantispyware ". Sometimes even the best scanners miss trojans and stuff, but when you combine them you can get better results.

You can also try booting with Knoppix USB and copy files that way.

Hey all,

I need some help or info on a problem I got on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, it is currently running on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, Service Pack 2.

OK, Here's the problem, I was in my granny's house, and they just bought a new Panasonic HDTV , with a HDMI port on it, so I thought of connecting my laptop to the TV too watch a movie. But, I was waiting for my cousin to finish taking a bath. So while waiting I thought, why not play a game before she comes out of the bathroom? So my brother comes out and say, let's play a qick game first, so I started Oblivion IV.

When I was halfway playing, the game suddenly froze. So I thought, must be because the graphics was too harsh on my laptop, and I tried to open Task Manager to close the program manually. But, nothing happened when I press CTRL + ALT + DEL. I tried it a few times, and nothing worked.

So I shut down the laptop manually(Hold down the power button), and when I press the power button to turn it on again, it started up like it would normally, then when it reached the Microsoft Loading screen(where the thingy runs in this rectangular bar during startup, with Microsoft Corporation written at the bottom), I noticed it took longer than usual, and then when it finished loading, the screen became black with only a cursor visible( Known as BlacK Screen Of Death I think). I tried rebooting a few times, but it still wouldn't work. And then one time, i rebooted and when the loading screen finished, the whol... Read more

Hello, I am having a problem with starting up my computer. I recently just bought another CPU fan after giving my old one to a friend for his PC. When I put the new CPU fan in my computer, Windows loaded up just fine. After a few minutes, I would get a blue screen. I kept rebooting and the blue screen still appeared. It never did this before I switched the CPU fan. So I shut the computer off for a while, turned it back on and nothing comes up on the screen. Not even the lights on the PC turn on. I can hear the harddrive turning on and I can see the CD-ROM light go on but that's about it. No beeps or anything. I tried replacing the CPU fan, power supply, the case, grey cable wires, and nothing seems to be helping. Any suggestions would be appreicated. Here's the computer info:

AMD Athlon 1 GHZ

My computer has two ram slots filled with 512 mb each, I replaced 1 ram card with a two gb ram card and tried to start my computer after I plugged it in. All I got was a blank screen. I replaced the new card with my old one and my computer started up normally. Does anyone have any suggestions? I also can't enter bios, it is just blank.

Answer:Need help with ram, got blank screen when tried to start up

Hi,

We have a few possibilities but first try these two:

1) Verify that your motherboard can support up to 2 GB per slot.
2) The RAM You bought is defective; return it and purchase another one. I suggest 2 stick of one 1GB each.

Hi All,Would appreciate some help with my current problem which leaves the system frozen. The cursor moves around ok but apart from a line down the screen about quarter way in from the left, the screen is blank. I am running
System details are as follows:HP Compaq DX2200 MT Intel ® Pentium ® 4CPU 3.20 GHZ,896 MB ram.
Microsoft windows XP version 2002 service pack 3
Browser 8, virus protection-Bitdefender.

I have been able to get the page up after hitting Control,Alt, Delete and this shows zero action on the CPU.
After about 30 mins the system gets going and starts up.I have at this point had a message to say that the firewall protection is switched off. Does this sound like some kind of contention between programs I am running or,perhaps a virus lurking somewhere.
At present the system is running normally and next time I switch on it may be fine.If it is a hardware prob I will probably junk the machine as it is getting a bit past it now.
many thanks

First off, let me say that I windows XP Home, with Kaspersky Anti-virus (not internet protection). Upon starting my computer yesterday, Kaspersky shrieked at me about a malware threat, some kind of trojan, and was able to quarantine some of it but not able to delete it. After rebooting, my entire screen is blank, with only the desktop theme. No icons, no menu bar, nada. Same story in safe mode. No icons, no background. I can however, access pretty much everything through task manager, and everything works. I've scanned with Lavasoft AVG, Ad-Aware, Kaspersky, Spy-Bot search and destroy. Then I got rid of all the extra anti spyware (except for Ad-Aware) and scanned again. Then I CC cleaned the registries, followed threads and attempted other fixes that either didn't work or refused to work. Scans came up clean so I updated Ad-aware, which now comes up buggy and unable to complete thorough scans. Kaspersky still comes up clean.

I've gone through all the intitial criteria for malware problem posting, and I followed everything to the letter. Here is my Hijack this (renamed "analyse.exe") logfile. Please Help!!!

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThisMake sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

Question: Blank Start Screen

This did not qualify as a BSoD but I managed to lose all of my tiles from the Start Screen, and since my background was blue, well, it was like a time warp.

Anyway, after installing Google Chrome and making it my default browser, I looked on the Start Screen and could not find a Chrome tile. The All Apps screen did have one and when I right clicked it, it indicated that it was on the Start Screen as it had the "Unpin from Start" icon. After trying various methods of getting it to show up, I did unpin it, which also removed it from the All Apps screen of course, then did a search for Chrome, started Chrome and then closed Chrome. When I then tried to go back to the Start Screen to see if there was a Chrome tile, I was greeted by a totally empty screen. I rebooted Win 8 and everything came back normal (I hope) but now with a Chrome tile.

Anyone have insight on what might have occurred?

Thanks
SR

I removed the graphics card and connected the PC with vga cable to the onboard graphics this then worked. So I then purchased a Graphics card from EBAY (exactly the same as before) and installed that. My problem is I still have a blank screen when re inserting the new card and connecting the DVI cable to it. If I leave the card inserted in the PC and use the vga cable I still get a blank screen. The only way to get the PC working is to remove the card altogether, I received a cd and drivers with the new card and I have installed them over the old drivers (updating) but still a blank screen. Can some one advise on where I am going wrong. Thanks in advance Cliff

Hello everyone I have been having some issues with an hp pavilion f1903 monitor, which I will summarise below: Upon start up / or when bringing the computer out of sleep mode after a long period of time has elapsed, the screen remains blank.Turning the monitor off and on again, and then clicking the mouse will bring up the screen for a fraction of a second before it disappears. After a while of going back and forth like this, the display will re-appear and there are no further problems with the monitor which functions normally, with no flickering. The period of time that it takes for this to happen appears to be increasing. The blue light on the monitor power button no longer functions, although the orange light indicating that it has entered sleep mode does still work.My suspicion, given the monitor's age, is that this is a power supply problem, however I would wlecome anyone else's thoughts.  Whatever the outcome, this has been a very good monitor. Many thanks in advance.

it all started when someone gave me a virus on msn since then my computer has seemed to gone from bad to worse. Its got to the point when i turn on my computer it loads up but when it comes to the bright blue log on screen, instead it goes blank and freezes, sometimes it even says no input signal. Then i have no choice but to turn my computer off by the mains and then start it back up where i get the option to go on safe mode and then it works. However this isnt right there must be something wrong with my normal mode. Has anyone got any ideas how to fix this problem ? i cannot get onto the normal mode at all!

Answer:NB 200, blank screen at start up

A flashing cursor often means that Windows is corrupted.

You may need to use your NB200 Recovery Disc to reinstall Windows.
If you didn't have time to create the Recovery Disc / USB Drive, you can order one from the Toshiba Website.

You may want to run Memtest to check the RAM for stability. www.memtest.org

I'm having a problem with my computer. It's a dell laptop running Windows XP. This problem just started very recently, the only thing I can think of that might have done it is either installing my new printer or installing Lord of the rings online, those are the only things I've installed around the time I noticed this problem started.

Anyway, the problem is, when I start up my computer, it shows the windows Welcome screen, then just shows the mouse cursor against a blank background. No taskbar, no nothing. I've figured out a way to get around this somehow, by opening the task manager and ending explorer.exe, then logging off my user and logging back on when I get to the login screen. After all that, everything seems fine, but I just can't figure out why it's doing that in the first place or how to fix it.

I would greatly appreciate any help or insight into solving the problem, thanks.

I was previously having a problem with my computer, and decided to uninstall and (try to) reinstall the driver software. I went on the computer with the driver software gone, but my computer froze and i had to turn the computer off. I started up and the screen is absolutely blank. Nothing comes up, but some message that says the monitor is in safe mode, which is not important. So I obviously can not go back in at all and do anything. Would anyone know the solution to this problem? Thank you.

Hi, can anyone help me? I started my pc up yesterday as normal and the usual black screen appeared showing all of the white writing you get on start up, folowed by the Amibios screen then Windsows XP home edition then it suddenly went blank! Totally black screen. I have tried a few times now but still the same thing happens. It is obviously not the monitor as you can see the booting going on but I just don't know why the screen goes blank. I have tried starting it in safe mode also but to no avail...it is sooo frustrating!

Answer:Blank screen on start up :(

First of all you have too many antivirus programs in there. What most people use and recommend on here is MS security essentials which is totally free and does a very good job.A blank screen can mean that the video or graphics cards need updated, or a problem with the screen itself or other problems.when you say blank is the screen any color at all such as white, black, blue etc?A white screen usually is a graphics or video problem or even a shot motherboard.

One of the times when I pressed a bunch of buttons the screen would go fuzzy then back to blank. The caps lock button keeps flashing and that's about all the information I have.
Is there anything I can do?
or any Idea what the problem is?

In the last four days I no longer see any data on my monitor when I first switch on my computer running Windows 98 SE. The computer is obviously running. I type in the BIOS password blind and wait. Eventually, the screen is illuminated with the wallpaper. If I restart, then the initial data is displayed. It's a fault I can live with, but I'd prefer the monitor and computer to return to functioning as they did before when I first switch on.

When pressing the power button it makes a quiet start up sound and the only indication that it is working is the tiny flashing light on the "Caps Lock" button on the left hand side of the keyboard. The system does not load and the screen is blank. The laptop arrived new only a couple of days ago, and worked fine for over 24 hours. To help me get used to using a laptop I used a wireless mouse via a small USB which went into the port on the right hand side. What appears to have happened is the AA battery in the mouse expired which caused the screen to freeze. I then removed the USB and attempted to carry on by using the touchpad, but nothing seemed to work. I replaced the mouse battery but this did not rectify the situation. With no other option I switched the power off by holding down the power button, but since then I have not been able to start up......I can hear the laptop by putting my ear very close......but the screen is blank.Do I need to send this product back...Can anyone help..?Alan

Answer:E5-511 blank screen on start up

The cable or the display goes through one of the hinges. Before this, moving the screen would make it connect, now it is probably completely separated. If it is still under warranty, book it in for warranty repair.http://customercare.acer.com/customercare/Default.aspxIf not under warranty, the cable will have to be replaced by you or a reliable local computer repair shop.

I have had this computer for the past 10 months and i upgraded it to Windows 10 shortly after I purchased it. Now, there's been some problems which are not so big, like the headphone jack not working anymore, but I can kinda live with that. Las night, my computer crashed and wouldnt turn on. When I switched it on, the power button and wifi were the only lights on and the screen was blank. I forced shut down and turned on a couple of times before leaving it on for about an hour. An hour later, I forced it shut down and turned it on and then it worked! I was happy and decided to shut it down and turn it on again tomorrow to use. Today, I can' t turn it on at all. The same lights are on and the fan is running but the screen is blank. I've tried removing battery, AC adaptor, hard reset but it all doesn't work.I'm not living in the area I purchased it from so I wont be able to send it for warranty until a month from now when I go back. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Hello,

I have a dell xps 710 that is running XP. Yesterday, I was attempting to update a driver and reboot my system and when it came back on all I say was my wallpaper and nothing else. I tried to get task manager to come up, but nothing. I tried a variety of ways to get something to come on, but still nothing. I went into Safe Mode...and still nothing. No icons..no nada.

I keep seeing a variety of things to do in order to try and get it to boot up and am really confused as to which one I should try.

When I put in my recovery disk I get a menu that says to pick the following options:

When I get the "welcome to set up" screen, should I choose

* To set up Windows XP now, press enter

or

* To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

Different people seem to be saying different things. I also read that you can go in and do the following:

* Boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console
* Run "Attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file
* Delete the C:\Boot.ini file
* Run "Bootcfg /Rebuild"
* Run Fixboot

And lastly, my pc told me to put in the service pack 2 data disk. If I download the application at work and burn it to a disk..should I burn it as a bootable disk or just a data disk?

I would appreciate any help. Many thanks.

Answer:Blank start up screen/No icons

Try this to see if you can get it to boot..

Reverting back to a pre-Service Pack state may help resolve the issue. It's possible that some system files were damaged during the driver install.

Go to this page and scroll down to the section that instructs you on removing service packs from the recovery console.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875350

Don't mess with your boot.ini, it's working fine. If it wasn't, you wouldn't be able to boot at all.

Approx one week ago my notebook started up with the screen not working.Strange!Everything appeared to be running fine, power lights on hard drive whirring away etc but nothing visual. After much reading of the manual I pressed FN key and f5 and the screen appeared. There is now however a noticeable difference in the picture quality.( Fonts seem slightly blurred ) Each time notebook turns on I no longer get the qosmio graphic appearing and screen is black for approx 30 seconds before desktop appears.I also noted that when I ran the Qosmio presentation a white strip approx 50 cms wide appears vertically down right hand side of screen similar to a wide vertical taskbar.Notebook is only 10mths old still under warranty and with "very low mileage"Mostly used for wireless internet access. Any help would be very welcome, thanks in advance.

Answer:Qosmio F10;Blank screen on start up

Your Qosmio seems in clone mode (tv+tft).
Right click on the desktop. go on Display properties. Last tab on the right. Select the correct resolution.
Then press "advanced" on this tab. Go on the "Geofrce FX5700" tab. Select Nview, then select "standard" instead of Clone. Press Apply.
It should correct your problem.

Or much easier, i just thought about it, press Fn+F5 until the selection is only your TFT screen.

Hello friends. This morning I woke up to find that my HP laptop, which I'd left on during the night, had suddenly stopped working. I held in the power button for a while and nothing happened. I unplugged the power source, removed the battery, then put them both back. That didn't change anything either. I've tried holding the power button down a few times. That hasn't helped anything either. I've got it as far as this: the indicator light on the caps lock is blinking. The wifi key (F12) is orange, instead of its usual white. The screen doesn't turn on. I'm not hearing the internal fan ratchet up, which would tell me that the hard drive is working while the screen is not. I've left it sit for a while like this, and I'm not sure what to do with it. I really don't want to send it in to a laptop repair place because, even though I've had it for years, I love it to pieces and want to keep using it. Edit: I tried a hard reset, but it didn't work.

c:/programdata/microsoft/windows/startmenu/programs/desktop.ink parameter is incorrect.
this came up after the upgrade was completed.
cannot switch back and forth using the windows key also.
Under programs there is no folder desktop.ink there is a desktop but this is a shortcut
at a loss how to recreate this parameter.
Also strange that none of my other three win 10 pro systems has this file either. I did enter this problem also in the IR problems.

Hi,
I don't know if this is the right place for this post...sorry if it isn't! I had searched online if someone has the same problem of me, I found similar problems but not the mine one (but if there is, can you please give me the link?).
I have a DELL LATITUDE D830 with a dual boot (Ubuntu and Vista). When I start Vista I get the Windows logo and then a black screen with the mouse pointer only.
Keybord doesn't work. I can move the mouse, but cannot select anything. No Ctr+Alt+Del works.
I can just switch off the computer. At the start up I need to press F8 to be able to choose something otherwise I get the black screen.
If I reboot in debug mode it seems to have problems when/after (?) loading crcdisk.sys driver...it doesn't tell me anything...
If I reboot asking automatic restore of PC it asks me the account and the only working account is the mine one (no administrator available). Then it suggests to contact the administrator. I have checked the error report and nothing is reported: system is working.
I have no previous configuration to restore.
I can access to the prompt. So I tried to write sfc /scannow. The answer is that to be completed the process requires to restart the computer and to do again sfc /scannow. I restart again, do the command again, but I get the same answer.....
When I get the black screen the processor is not off, because after a long time (2 hours about) the computer restarts by itself....so something is happening even if I don't know what... Read more

Answer:Blank screen at Vista start up..

First of all...have you tried Windows Vista Startup Repair? There is a tutorial in this Forum on how to do that. Sorry but I am horrible with hyperlinks.

If that doesnt work, you can still install Vista over the previous with a reformat to ensure correct install and operation. You can install a Program called EZ BCD. It modifies your boot file to choose which OS you which to boot to, times, and default OS to boot to.

You can find that either by googling it or at download.com.

I hope this helps.

Upon start up of my PC (Windows 10) it loads up then the screen goes blank, like its in sleep mode, no mouse nothing, if I turn the monitor on and off, the screen appears for a second or two then disappears again.
I tried restarting in safe to check drivers but it does exactly the same thing here. In safe mode however, under monitors Generic PNP Monitor has the Yellow Exclamation mark indicating an issue. I have tried uninstalling this and also my graphics drivers and it seemed to work for the first time. Next day I turned on my PC again and the same thing is happening. I have to constantly turn on and off my monitor so I can navigate to the relevant areas to uninstall drivers etc.
I have tried a Google search but everything I have read has said something about having a mouse pointer on a blank screen but I do not even have that.
I did try a fresh install of Windows 10 but that did not solve the problem, so based on that I'm guessing its a hardware issue, not a software issue.
My graphics are built in, not a separate card which the driver for this is labelled Intel HD(R) Graphics.
Unfortunately I do not have access to another monitor to check to see if the monitor is faulty.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice I would be hugely grateful.

Hello,
First time post here. Recently my computer ( Dell Inspiron 8600, Windows XP SP2, 512RAM, 80G HD )has started acting funny. When I turn it on the Windows blue screen act normal as it loads but then my background picture appears but no icons or even taskbar. I can move the cursor around but rightclicking doesnt open up any options. So I manually turn the power off and then back on after a couple of times the icons will finally appear and everything will work normal. Anyhelp is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot. I've learned a lot just from browsing these forums.

OK no windows not even that BIOS stuff just blank screen and beeps roughly every 3 seconds

Heres the things i`ve tried so far...

Windows XP Home Edition CD wont work

Removing stuff give it a clean and slotting back in didn`t work

And heres a quick guide to whats happened so far...

I had this problem before but some times it would start up and say theres a nostkrnl.exe missing or corrupted, i tried eveything on the windows cd recovery console what people told me to do but it didn`t work
So eventually i thought what the hell and decided to reload windows... which was a complete success as it kinda went over the top of the old ones so i could find my old files and stuff

Unfortunately i turn it off and then on again the next day and i`m back to the beeping and blank screen... and this time theres no getting into safe mode or windows CD or anything

Please Help....

Answer:HELP!!! PC Blank screen at start up and 3 sec`s beeps

If it was a desktop computer it has an external monitor, most monitors
show a configuration screen when first powered on until it receives a signal.
Turn the monitor and computer both off for a few seconds, turn the monitor on
you should see the default config screen for it with possibly a logo of the manufacturer,
turn the computer on, does the monitor turn black or does the configuration screen still show?

Next thing is what make and model is the computer? If it is a dell desktop you should be able to locate
4 LED lights on the back near the USB ports labeled A/B/C/D when you power your computer on and hear the beeps
see if any of these lights turn on and take note of them also take note of the beep sequence (# of times and how many
times it occurs also how frequently).

Report back with this information.

When I turned on my NB250 this morning, the screen was blank, no TOSHIBA logo, no nothing. power-on indicator is lighting, HDD indicator lights for a second then nothing, I can hear the fan inside, can somebody help?

I read on the forum that I need to update my bios but how? Please help

Answer:NB250 - blank screen on start up

Hello

Why updating the BIOS if your computer is not able to start properly?

Either the internal display is malfunctioning and doesn?t show a picture or it?s serious hardware malfunction like mainboard itself.

At first I would connect an external monitor before you start the notebook to check if it?s a monitor problem or not. After you have connected it, turn on the computer and press FN+F5 key combination to switch on external monitor.

If it doesn?t help check this article:

Hi. First of all I don't know what happened or I'm not sure what happened to my Satallite L40-B yesterday i had to go to school for the checking of our thesis and my laptop won't open up.

BUT the power button is on light and the charger light says its charging cause there a light on it.
So i assumed it was on but I cant see anything on it. So i tried to lose up the batteries and I saw these pictures below.

It has some white greasy figure thing on the sucket of the battery and the one on the attaching part of it in laptop.
(I really don't know what these is.) BUT it is charging! So maybe the problem is the monitor or LCD of it.

So i tried doing external stuff with my Desktop still cant see anything on my desktop then I read other forums it says the fan must be running. etc. etc. Uhm its NOT I can feel the machine is not running cause it doesnt heat up and I dont hear the fan.

I hope you can help me guys with this! I don't want to go to repair stores and they tell me what problem and make money out of me.

Answer:Satallite L40-B - Blank Screen on Start Up

I’m afraid your notebook developed an serious hardware problem but I don’t think that someone here would be able to say what’s wrong exactly without checking the notebook… you know…

I would recommend you to visit some computer engineers downtown and to check the hardware… I mean the guys could tell you what part is affected and you would get the cost estimate.
After that you can still decide whether you want to get it fixed or not

hello, need some help with this because i have never ran across this problem before.

i have a compaq presario running windows vista, believe its 32 bit

when i power on the PC it has the first little loading screen with the compaq logo on it then it just goes to a blank black screen with a cursor blinking in the top left hand side of the screen... and thats all it does...

from what i was told the owners wife was playing some game (a normal windows game) and all of a sudden the computer just shut down they pressed the power button to turn it back on and nothing happens.

i have taken the drive out and put it into another computer and scanned it for viruses and it found a trogen and removed it, but the problem still persists.

i also have the "Ultimate Boot up CD for Windows" and loaded it up and ran a disk check and it ran its course and "fixed errors and checked all files for errors" so i tried to restart and see if windows will load up but still nothing happens. I believe it has something to do with the boot-up drivers being corrupt or even problems with the registry but i am having trouble figuring out how to solve this problem without having to do the last resort and reformat the drive.

any help would be much appreciated.

I did a system scan with Spybot Search and Destroy along with Hijackthis. The computer was working just fine until start up. When everything loads a white blank screen randomly pops up and disappears. The computer is running just fine but it's bugging me what the white screen is cause it never happened before. I restarted the computer a few times to see if I can crash the white screen which I did. It gave me a CPAX20 error. I did some research on it and it says that I must of downloaded an adware which I don't think can be possible because I've been dealing with virus, maware, and adware for years and I can't find anything I've recently downloaded that would have any viruses because I download programs from a friend that's very reliable.

Anyone have any idea on what this is?

(Note: If this is in the wrong section then I apologize before hand)

Hi man.
First of all, you need to put ALL system spec. If you don't know it, download and install:

Speccy from > http://download.piriform.com/spsetup101.exe

I'm hoping you can help me with a problem with my M677 notebook. (Sorry if this is in the wrong forum)Last week, I went to turn my laptop on and whilst it seems to be powering up and I still got the start up music, the screen didn't turn on and remained blank. I tried restarting however this time, the power came on but didn't get as far as start up music and the screen remained blank. After researching this on-line, a website suggested taking the battery out then taking the power cord out and pushing the on button for 30 seconds. After this, putting the power cord back in and turning on again. I tried this and it worked. I was able to use the notebook as usual. I checked everything on the laptop was working as it should be (Virus check, device manager etc) and everything seemed ok.After turning the laptop off, I couldn?t get it back on again. I've tried all combinations of with the battery/power and without however have since only managed to get it back on once and when repeating the process, couldn?t replicate. The time I did have it on, I did a full system restore back to a few weeks ago which didn?t seem to help.I?ve tried taking the hard drive out and running the restore disk however in both cases, the screen just stayed blank.I?ve also tried linking the laptop to my TV to see if it?s just a problem with the screen however the TV picks up no signal.I?ve contact official support only to be told it sounds like a problem with the build in VGA and will cost over... Hi all. I hope someone can make a suggestion.
My son's HP computer will not start. It gets as far as the Windows XP load screen (with the progress or animated bar on it) and then it goes blank. About 10-15 seconds later the screen remains blank but it starts to play music. The music sounds almost like a game playing. I can't get into safe mode or use system recovery and, of course, he didn't create emergency disks when he got the computer.

The computer is about 2 months old running XP Professional.

Has anyone seen something like this before? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, my desktop's been having some problems recently. When I switch it on, it loads just fine. However when it comes to the point in time where it is supposed to show the blue start up screen with "Welcome", the entire screen turns blank. And it just remains that way. There isn't any start up tone too. I've tried rebooting numerous times in normal and safe modes and nothing. Is it a graphic card problem? I do not wish to reformat, quite a fair bit of my school work is in there, I can't risk losing them... And it's urgent since I have most of my portfolio files in there...

Please and thank you!

Answer:Screen turns blank on start up for a second of two...

It may be blanking out like its changing resolutions because it is in fact doing just that. Are you using a DVI to analog converter on the back of your video card? because thats just what it does.

I've got a windows vista desktop that I have not used in awhile. I hooked it all up today and when I turn it on it sits at a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left hand corner. Can someone help me get this computer going again? Oh, I should mention I'm not very tech savy, but I can follow directions good.

Answer:Stuck on blank screen during start up.

Let's have a look at the MBR (Master Boot Record) and see where we go from there.

Step 1: On a working computer, please download the latest version of PartedMagic:PartedMagic Downloads (download the .iso file under the heading "Most people will only need this file:")
Write ( in the appropriate manner) the downloaded .iso file to either CD or USB/flashdrive:Creating the LiveCD with InfraRecorder
Creating the LiveUSB
Boot the problematic computer from the PartedMagic CD or flashdrive:At the first menu with Default settings (Runs from RAM) selected, press <ENTER>.
Be patient while PartedMagic loads into memory, and then displays its Desktop.
Success? Let me know if you can successfully boot to the Desktop of PartedMagic, and whether you are using a bootable CD or a flashdrive.

PartedMagic Desktop version 2012-08-09

Step 2: At the PartedMagic Desktop, open a terminal window:Locate the black screen/monitor icon (ROXTerm) along the bar at the bottom of the Desktop screen (third icon from the left-side edge).
Click on the ROXTerm icon to open a terminal window and at the prompt, type:

fdisk -l

Note: There is a space between "fdisk" and "-l".
That is a lower case L as in Llama and not a ONE.

Hi , I wonder if someone maybe able to help with this problem please

When I start my desktop PC it shows the first screen and then the next screen where it should be starting up it just remains black apart from a little white line in the top left hand corner flashing like its waiting for me to type something (or what does this mean ? ). This seems to remain here for a least a while as I have waited. I restart the PC and press F9 for diagnostics and all systems are green and then everything boots up as normal with no problems. This has happened the last few days. I noticed I have had alot of Windows updates so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

I'm using a desktop with Windows 7, I'n not sure what else to add at this stage.

Advice is appreciated , thanks

Boot the computer and repeatedly press F8 while it is booting. A screen will come up that list Repair as the first option. Choose that.

Hi

I bought my NB200 Aug 2009, it has been working very well for me till about 2 weeks ago.

One day, I turned it off normally, second day morning, I tried to trun on, I only see power light, plugin light, battery charging light up., the HDD light flashed once for maybe 2-3 seconds, then fade away. And the screan remains blank all the way.

I tried remove battery, unplug, wait up to 3 hours, put everything back, it still not starting up.
Also I tried with different RAM, but result remains the same.

And the situation getting worse and worse. About 2 weeks ago, when it first started, after about 10 tries, I could get it start. This morning I had to try over an hour, and finally got lucky once.

So, anyone is having the same problem? Any suggestions?

Please help me!

Answer:Re: NB 200 cannot start, screen remains blank!

Hi, it sounds like it may have a Mainboard problem (possibly heat related). The only solution may be to send it to an ASP for repair.

Hi

I was wondering if you could help me. I have a Acer laptop that is currently running build 7068 (specs available at the side there for full info). Since build 7000 I have been doing update installs, which have worked find (save a few glitches here and there), and I wanted to do a clean install of build 7100. However, when i boot from CD or USB pen, as soon as the Windows Logo disappears, the mouse cursor appears for a second (against a black screen), and then all I get is a completely blank screen, no disc accesses, CD accesses, nothing.

If I do the install from within Windows (again a clean install), the files copy across okay, but as soon as it rebooots during expanding, I get the same again, a blank screen and nada!!!!

I'm not sure if it's the graphics card at fault, or what, but surely if the beta build had enough drivers, this should. Could anyone suggest anything that may help?

Thank you.

Answer:Blank Screen at start of installation

It sounds like you may have a corrupted image. You might try a different .iso or burn the one you have at a lower speed on a new DVD. Good luck.
