Hard drive and cd drive stopped working after file transfer

Question: Hard drive and cd drive stopped working after file transfer

I'm using Windows xp sp2 and a couple of days ago I tried to copy a wav music track from a cd in my cd drive onto one of my hard drives(not the hard drive with windows on it) it gave a message saying unable to complete due to hardware connection being interrupted
since then the Cd drive and Harddrive I was copying too work only intermittently and for a short time. If you try and copy anything too or from the drive it will start working and then stop.
I think this is a virus problem but aren't completely sure as I've run spyware doctor which found a couple of viruses, but the problem continues despite removing them
thanks. hope someone can help

Preferred Solution: Hard drive and cd drive stopped working after file transfer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a number of photos on an old hard drive (from a Win 98 PC). This old PC doesn't recognise any USB flash drives, even if I try to install the driver, and neither does it have a CD-writer. Someone at work mentioned being able to add the old drive to my new PC by designating it as a slave? Can anyone please provide some detailed instructions. Many thanks.

When a shop technician installs a new hard drive and removes a old hard drive will he/she be able to transfer the files from the old one to the new one even without XP installed?

Or do most shops install OS's for free?

Answer:Hard Drive File Transfer

It depends on the individual retailer weather or not they install the os for free, my guess is they dont. I know all the shops round here charge you for it. As for the file transfer from one hard drive to the next that shouldnt be to hard a good disk imaging program should do the job. Something like Power Quest or Norton Ghost theres loadz out there and im sure you will be able to find a free one somewheres

Hope it helps

I just bought a Western Digital 250 GB My Book for my PC. It is connected through a USB 2.0 PCI hub that had not caused me any problems with my iPod in the past. When I transfer files from my Boot drive to the external everything goes very smoothly and quickly. However, when I try to transfer back to the Boot drive it takes forever. I tried to transfer a 350 Mb video file and I let it run overnight and 8 hours later it was still less than half done and it said it would take another 183 minutes, exactly what it said when I left it the night before. Is there some way to make file transferring faster, or for that matter even possible between these two drives. I'm going nuts because I moved all of my digital pictures onto this drive and if this is a permanent problem then I need to figure out how to retrieve them.

Answer:External hard drive file transfer

Try to bypass the USB hub and connect it directly to your computer. See if that makes a faster transfer or not.

...and guess what? It doesnt work anymore.

Sometimes the BIOS will recognize the hard drive. I tried to load up [email protected] Boot disk and run Disk Check on it, but it froze at about 22% completed.

I know that its not a good thing to unplug while the HD is being accessed but it was a mistake.

Does anyone have any tips for me to try? It doesnt seem completely bricked yet.

Answer:Disconnected hard drive during a file transfer

Get the drive test utility from the manufacturers website and run it. If it fails you may be able to low-level format the drive and make it useable again. All data would be lost though

Answer:How do I transfer a hard drive w/windows 8 to working pc?

Two things you need to think about.1. Data recovery. This means the simple data can be recovered.2. Program transfer. Some programs can be transferred from one computer to another. But often not. The program is there, but it will not run.Myself, I have given up on stuff that claims to transfer all my programs from on PC to another. They claim it works, but you have to fork up the money first to see it work. I refuse to pay for anything that is not proved to work. It it really works, they would have thousands of endorsements.

Problem: Trying to open files from Q memory external hard drive onto new computer running windows XP. Using backup bat.bxt software. Unable to locate program associated with bxt extension. While searching, inadvertently clicked on outlook express migration 5.0 listing while browsing for programs. How can I reverse the OEM conversion, and how can I open files with a bxt extension?

Have you tried reverting to a restore point before your accident? That may prove to be the easiest.

My old Compaq Presario 900US laptop got bad (water got in it). I got the hard drive out and attached via USB to my new laptop (Compaq Presario V2565). I can see the files under drive E: (USB port). Is there any way to transfer all the files, programs (have them install automatically) and settings from the hard drive to the new computer? The hard drive (old connected by usb) ran on windows xp and so does my new computer. thanks

Answer:Laptop Hard Drive File and Program Transfer

The operating system and installed programs cannot be recovered.
You can recover (copy) any data you had stored ... and any email still in OE.

If you can read the HD .. are you sure it's bad ???

I use an Averatec notebook, and an external hard drive. The external has 149gigs of free space left and it will not allow me to drop a movie which is 7.9gigs onto it. The error I recieve says that there is not enough space on the drive.

Ive tried deleting about 10gigs from the external and it still says not enough room on the drive.
Ive transfered other things onto the external and they work properly.
If anyone knows what the problem might be I would be greatfull for any help.

Are you sure it is freezing? Maybe AV software is on-access scanning the files. It does sometimes happen in my case due to ZoneAlarm, usually with large files. Explorer may show (not responding) during it.

I recently installed a new "WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive" for additional PC storage. Used regular sata cable to motherboard & sata power cable connector to power supply unit.
OK, so the new drive didn't appear in Computer upon 1st boot, so I went in through Disk Management to format drive,
Did it as GPT Disk (as >2Tb) and all went to plan. Until I started transferring files onto it. Started ok (64Mb/s) but after about 30 seconds noticed transfer activity not changing. Eventually error message came up stating new file location did not exist, and the drive had disappeared from Computer.
Restarted and back it was. But same thing happened - no matter what size file I chose to transfer.
Reformatted disk. Same thing happened.
Converted to MBR disk, the disk was split in two (and by the way it only let me format one of them). Tried transferring again - same deal. The last time I noticed the transfer started at 128Mb/s and slowly crept down to 27Mb/s and stayed there until the error came up. Not sure if that hadn't happen previously.
Anyway, I fear the drive is a dud - or my initial formatting screwed with something. Or it could be connections to the motherboard/power supply?
Will be a little bit of a work up to open her up again to check connections, so just wanted to see if any of you Uber tech-savvy Demigods could shine a light on any of this before I have to do so.

Hey guys,
My computer is a barebones system consisting of an AsusP4PE, Intel P4 2.4GHz, 512M ram etc. Yesterday I decided to put my old hard drive on, to retrieve some data from it. I set the jumpers so that it's the slave. This is an old Maxtor 20g drive. Put it in the computer, relocated the power plug from the existing hard drive(old 40gig maxtor) to the 20gig one, and put a free plug on the old drive, (the existing hard drive was in the slave position on the ATA cable, so I just connected the slave drive to the master position on the ATA, didn't think it was a big deal). Booted it up, and the usual whine of the hard drive isn't there. BIOS does not detect ANY drives.

I then remove the 20gig drive, and the restarted the system and same thing. Doesn't seem like it's getting power. At the same time, I had installed a DVD drive and tied up all 4 main power plugs.

Now, what might be happening here? I tried different power plugs with the same results...hard drive seems dead. I haven't tried JUST using the 20gig drive yet, since I ran out of time. I checked all cable connections to make sure they were tight.

Any ideas on what's going on? Is there a reset procedure somehow? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi there, sorry in advance for anything in this post that may sound silly or unclear as i am not tech savy, and this is the first time I've ever posted on one of these forums but its an emergency and i'd appreciate all the help i could get!

So i have this 1tb toshiba external hard drive that I've had for probably a year or less, that i formatted properly to mac when i got it and it was working fine ever since, i had absolutely no problems (Thankfully).

However the other day my hard drive got accident plugged into a dell laptop (that i presume was probably on windows) as my teacher who accidentally plugged it in mistakenly took it for her own hard drive. I didn't realise it wasn't working until today when i plugged it into my own macbook air and it was no longer being recognised, it is not coming up on my desktop, nor under devices or applications in the finder.

Im presuming that it being plugged into that dell laptop is correlated with it now not being recognised on my mac where it had previously been recognised and working fine, unless its just stopped being recognised and has nothing to do with that situation?

If anyone could advise me on how maybe i could possibly get my laptop to recognise it again as i really need to access my work that is on there - contents of the hard drive are just image and video files as i do photography and videography.

any questions or any more info needed please just ask, sorry if I've missed anything out.... Read more

Hello Badluckkat,

First if you can give us a model number that would be fantastic!
as Toshiba makes a lot of XHDs

As for the device no longer registering;

do you know what your teacher did on your dive is anything?

And then you said your plugging it into your desktop - is that a PC or MAC too?

As for a fix right now I would say restart your macbook boot it up w/out the drive connected then connect the drive when the macbook is fully booted and tell me how that goes

Hi Guys

My Seagate 500GB external hard drive has stopped working for me today! Its been connected to my PC and was fine last night. The drive is no longer being recognised by windows. When its connected I can see it in device manager as a usb mass storage device but its not showing up in disk management. I can hear the disk spinning normally in the case so at least it still sounds healthy but I cant get windows to recognise it.

A few HD's that have gone bust on me before so I tried the usual tactics. I switched out the cables and tried connecting it to another PC but it was the same issue. Ive removed the disk from the case and connected it directly to my PC. When I boot up now I can see an extra disk is showing in my computer but I still cant access it (just showing as Local Disk (F). When I check device manager under disk drives its just listed as "disk drive" and now I cant even access disk management as it just freezes when I open it. Ive also tried to format it but I got an error message at the start saying it was unable to format.

Any thoughts?

Answer:External hard drive has stopped working

Make a Parted Magic boot disk (it's Linux based ) and see if you can access the drive with that.

Is the data on the drive backed up? If you can't read the drive with Parted Magic it's probably gone bad. Under warranty?

I have an external hard drive that has stopped working......

The hard drive is a laptop hard drive that has a small attachment on it so I can plug a usb in to it, this small attachment has a light on, green usually means it's working normally.....

When I plug the hard drive in to the USB, the stays constant amber and i can hear the drive spinning, the drive spins for around 10 seconds then stops then does the same again, after a few attempts at this the drive then doesn't spin at all and the light stays constant green but the drive isn't showing on the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Many Thanks

Ok, ive read all the previous threads in many places.

This is a description of my problem.

I just got setup my external hard drive. I put much stuff on my drive and then disconnected it. Later today I did connect it. it made the usb connected sound, i checked my device manager and it says my USB device under Disk Drives. It does NOT show up under my computer. I have already uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it by A) manually hitting reinstall and B) restarting my computer with the driver uninstalled.

STILL nothing. It does NOT show up under disk management under computer management under admin tools.

It has had the same problem in every other computer i have connected it to. I cannot reformat because it does not detect correctly.

In Device manager it says the device is working properly.

help. i just got this drive today and would really like all the stuff i backed up.

That sounds normal for copying files back to itself. Speeds always start off higher while the buffer is in use.

I'm having trouble watching video from one of my hard drives (XP). At first I thought it was a codec problem so I uninstalled and reinstalled the codecs but that never worked.
Then I tried watching video on the other hard drive and no problem there.

I confirmed that its a hard drive problem when I tried to copy one of the files from the problematic hard drive, it showed 30mins left where it normally takes 1-2mins.

I checked to see if the channel was in PIO mode but all are in DMA.

Any way around this ?

Okay, here's my situation; My friend went away for a few days, leaving his PC (Windows XP) at home. When he got back he attempted to turn it on and nothing happened. The fan spun for literally a second and then stopped. After doing this, pressing the power button did nothing unless you were to unplug the power chord and plug it back in and power on, and then it would just do what it did before. So after a while of fiddling around, i figured out that when you unplug his hard drive, the computer powers on and sits at the BIOS screen reminding me of the missing hard drive. So now we know what the problem is. However i brought his hard drive home and plugged it into my computer externally (USB) and it worked. All his files and folders are still on the hard drive and it's working fine.So what does this mean? Can anyone shed any light on the matter? Hard drive randomly conflicting with it's fellow hardware after 2 years of flawless behavior? Thanks for the help guys

Answer:Hard Drive stopped working but works in other computer?

Ah good Lewk, you found your way over here and got your post up.  Like I was saying in chat, something may have happened to the power supply, although it's strange that it starts without the hard drive. Perhaps it is overloaded by that one last piece.Like I mentioned in chat, try swapping it with a known working drive and see if it will boot.Do you have another working power supply? Might try swapping that out and see if it boots with the original hard drive. (This is more of a pain than the first suggestion, but it will help rule out the PSU.)

Hi everyone, was hoping I could get some help here. I'm a pretty advanced user, so I've already done the usual troubleshooting and everything, but my problem persists. I have a 1TB external Hard drive that I've been using for like 6 months, I've never had any problems with it until now. It suddenly decided to stop working on windows. I've tried it on around 7 different windows PCs and laptops, ranging from XP to windows 8.1, and it doesnt work on any of them. It does, however, work perfectly well on Ubuntu. This has led me to believe that there is either a windows-specific virus on it or something. I have opened it up and connect it via SATA cable as well, so its not the casing. When the hard drive is plugged in, the light is on, and a new drive (Local Disk E) shows, but it should be called Touro, and I can't do anything with the drive. if I click on it, windows explorer freezes. When I open Disk Management, it sticks on "Connecting to Virtual Disk...." something, but never ever loads, but the second I take the drive out it continues to load and works normally. I have scanned the entire drive (took a day) and found no threats, so I am completely stumped. Basically, I either need someone to tell me the exact problem and a way to fix it (without formatting my drive), or alternative ways around it.
Thanks in advance

Answer:IOMEGA external hard drive has just stopped working

Have you tried the drive in another computer?
Do you have any other external drives or USB devices and do they work ok?
What OS are you running?

I would definitely recommend taking the drive to a shop or tech to have a look, if you aren't familiar with data recovery.

The problem could be a corrupt partition table, or other data related - not physical, problem. A reformat will "fix" your drive, but you will lose data. In situations like these, taking the drive to an experienced person will be the best option to avoid making matters "worse", and as a worse case scenario, data recovery software should get your most if not all of your data back.

Most likely, the integrity of the drive has been affected, but the drive itself still holds the data.

for a couple of days now, i haven't been able to access my external hard drive (from any computer). the drive doesn't show up in 'my computer' if it is connected from when i boot the machine and if i connect it after windows starts up and then try to access 'my computer', the entire function of 'my computer' freezes (nothing happens if i right click or left click or anything).if i have it connected from boot, the drive still shows up in the device manager and it doesn't appear as yellow so the computer seems to think it's working fine; until i try to do anything like uninstall the driver or disable it, at which point, my computer freezes again.this may seem really stupid but i have a sneaking suspicion that the problem might have come from my girlfriend's computer as i lent her the hard drive and when i got it back, found an infection on it. however, i papped the infected files in the vault and the hdd worked fine for about a week before any problems i going to need to send it for data recovery or can anyone offer a simple solution?

When I plug it in via USB I can feel the disk spinning inside and loading, but the windows sound does not play. About 2-3 minutes later I get the sound but it does not appear under Hard Disk Drives on My Computer. When I try to go into device manager it crashes windows explorer.

After a couple of attempts the name is now "Local Disk I:' and not even 'Elements'

After about 10-15 minutes of being plugged in the drive clicks and won't do anything else.

I REALLY need some of the work off the hard drive - It's so important to my second year at university.

Any help you can give me I will be eternally grateful. Call me a *******, but I usually back up my work via dropbox anyway but theres some bits I didnt back up yet and it's so important I get them.

I've looked at getting a universal drive adaptor but i've heard about data recovery software but there seem to be so many out there - If my hard drive isnt completely screwed could someone reccomend me one or give me some advice?

Thanks in advance.

I have a Z60m, after 3 years an 2 months (it had 3 year warranty), had a blue screen  and could not recover. So I got a new hard drive from Lenovo. How do I transfer programs such as Inter video DVD, Disk copy and MS office which I have on old hard drive to new one ? I don't mind if I got all the settings the lap top came with 3 years ago, but I had added MS office (and now lost the purchase key code to download it again) Thank you.

Answer:Z60m - transfer intervideo DVD, diskcopy, MS office from old hard drive to new hard drive

maybe you could use something like Acronis True image.

Hey, I'm currently using Windows 7 and when I turned on my computer today it said something about needing to scan my hard drive. I let it begin but after 30 minutes I decided to turn my computer off because I had to get onto it to reply to an important email. When I rebooted it, I checked the hard drive and its now empty. In disk management it shows up and says its active and healthy, however if I right click onto it I have the option to format it. Also, if I try to drag a file onto it, a window pops up saying "could not find this item, this is no longer allocated in Computer. Verify the items location and try again."

Is there any way to get my files back?

Answer:Hard Drive stopped working, need to format an lost all files.

Hello. I have looked this problem up on the internet, yet none of the answers have been of much help to me. So now I turn to the experts. Recently my external hard drive (500gb, 400gb free space, Seagate Expansion Portable Drive) has come up with what seems to be a common error: "Windows Explorer has stopped working." I go into my hard drive and five seconds later the error message pops up, then it goes 'windows explorer is restarting.' All my icons disappear for a moment then reappear and my external hard drive has shut down. It never used to do this before - it's just started doing it a few hours ago. My computer is a Windows 7, and the antivirus I use is bullguard (if it's of any use.)I scanned my device for malware or errors but it says there's nothing wrong. Keep in mind this is only on my external hard drive. It never happens anywhere else on my computer.Your help is greatly appreciated!~Seki

Answer:'Windows Explorer has Stopped Working' < External Hard Drive Error

Does this external HD have its own power supply? I believe it does. Some uses report the segregate drives can fail after a few months. That should be rare, but I have seen that in more than one credible place. If the drive is inside of warranty , take it back now! But if the problem is the power and interface, you can test the HD by putting it into a desktop PC as the slave drive, or secondary drive.A new enclosure is about $30 here in the USA.

This hard drive originally was in my brother's computer. He had XP installed, went to install Windows 7 and after the first reboot, it would just hang on the bios screen.

I played with the jumper settings and such, nothin'. Put it in a few other computers, nothin'.

I was just curious, is it something that can be fixed or should I lay it on my desk to hold down some papers?

my macbook pro is currently our of commission due to a mishap with a cup of water. the person i spoke to on the phone at the apple store said to have the hard drive transferred to an external one in case they need to reformat it. is this even possible if my laptop won't turn on?

Answer:transfer data from laptop hard drive to external hard drive

Depends on the type of water damage has been done.
If your laptop has been a small puddle of water for a little bit of time, yes it will mess up your hdd's connectors and possibly damage it.
If the water spill was like a splash on the keyboard and quickly cleaned up, you have a good chance of the hdd working.
Just depends on what got damaged badly enough for something not to turn on for quite awhile.

Also get rid of that macbooks battery, I have a bad feeling it might not work with your macbook anymore.

Alright, I have a whole bunch of my music and videos on my external hard drive and I got a new Dell XPS 8300 yesterday. I had been using my external hard drive just fine for the past 1-2 yeas now with 2 different laptops, working fine. I plugged it yesterday to transfer all my music to my new computer and it seemed to be working fine. There was an error as the copy rate slowwed so I decided to delete and try again. I did that about 3 times and then decided to just copy the music album by album. Eventually, I don't know how it ended up happening, instead of the Hard Drive coming up as Seagate on the My Computer Tab, it started showing up as Local Disk: J on my Dell and Local Disk E on my laptop now. It doesn't matter where I plug it in. Not only that, it won't open when I try to open it. It will get 95% loaded and then just pause and stop responding. I'm completely lost.

My hard drive is Seagate 250 GB.

Answer:External hard drive stopped working, only shows up as Local Disk -- won't open

Hi, first I would run the Seagate diagnostics to check the hard drive is still healthy following this guide.

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturers diagnostic for ISO CD. Burn the image file to a CD, boot the PC with the disc in the drive and run the diagnostics. You first need to set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order in the Bios setup.

If you do not have an image burner use this free software to make the CD.

I have an HP Pavillion dv6500 laptop that originally was loaded with VISTA, but now is operating  with WINDOWS  7.   I do not have any INSTALL DISKS FOR vista or WINDOWS 7.  The laptop was originally owned by my daughter and she gave it to me after upgrading to a new laptop.  Last year I received notification via the laptop that I could upgrade to WINDOWS 10 for free.  After trying unsuccessfully numerous times to upgrade. I read the System Requirements for WINDOWS 10 and found that my laptop lacked the required free RAM, 16 GB.  I decided to replace  the original stock Hard Drive, 150 GB, with a new HD, 500 GB. I am looking for the best way to transfer the data from the old HD to the new HD.  Please know that this is the first time that I have performed any type of work of this type on a PC device, so please be aware that I probably will ask questions or ask for clarification of your recommendations, so bare with me. Thank you in advance!

Answer:Transfer existing Hard Drive info to new Hard Drive

Blazer5 Let's correct a few things, first. Win10 does not require 16GB of RAM; instead, it requires that much Disk Space. Win10 requires only 1GB RAM (32-bit PC) or 2GB of RAM (64-bit PC). As to transferring the data, there are two part to this -- the easy part and the hard part. BOTH start the same way, by you purchasing a USB-to-Hard-Drive adapter and using that to connect the old drive to the PC. But, you first need to determine if the old drive is IDE or SATA.  IDE drives have two rows of small pins on the back; SATA drive have two plastic connectors with contact strips on them.  IF it's an IDE drive, make sure that the Adapter you obtain handles IDE drives -- most new ones do NOT. Then, after connecting the drive to the PC, you should get popups about opening a File Manager window for each of the partitions on the drive.  If the drive is still formatted the original way, the really large partition will have the OS and data files in it. You should then be able to copy the data from this old drive to your PC simply by dragging and dropping in Windows Explorer. That's the easy part ... The hard part is that the files she saved under her user account will be protected, and while you MIGHT be able to copy them, you will NOT be able to open them -- this is by design.  This allows multiple folks, each with their own user ID, to use the same PC and not see each other's files. To solve that, you will have ... It's been a terrible two weeks as far as computers go! At first I thought I had malware, but after spending 4 days going through all the different tests, I found out that I had no malware, but I had a system crash on the day in question. SO, I spent another 3 or 4 days in the software forum trying to get my computer up to speed once again. Finally, after all that time and many, many headaches and sleepless nights, my computer was back to and perfectly running like the day I built it not 6 months ago! That was until the next day, when Windows started telling me my hard drive was failing! UUUGGGGHHH!
So, anyway, I have a Seagate SATA II 320gb drive that is literally 6 months old that is failing. I recently purchased another Seagate SATA 300gb hard drive for another computer that I was about to start building over the holidays (until my nice little encounter with computer nastiness!). I was wondering how I would go about transferring my files from the one drive to the other? I tried backing everything up to disk, but it failed about halfway through the first of ten disks! What is a RAID setup, and would it be any good for my situation? I am really finding out that I am computerally challenged, but we all have to start somewhere, so please be gentle with me and assume that I know're probably right! Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for all you guys do, and if you need any other info, just let me know. I a... Read more

Can you transfer contents of C: drive to another hard drive easily? My C: drive is out of room, and I have another new hard drive waiting on my it a simple thing to have my local shop just transfer the contents to the new drive, so that when I reconnect I have my OS, everything intact?

Not interested in doing it myself; I don't have the software or the time and don't want the hassle.

Answer:Can you transfer contents of C: drive to another hard drive easily?

Just ask them to clone your old drive to the new drive. Think out in advance what you want to do with the old drive, maybe have them do that too. Cloning makes the new drive look just like the old one in exact detail. They just use some software to do the copying. Pretty simple, shouldn't cost much.

Hello all,

Asus P5N-E SLI
Intel Q6600 2.4ghz
Micron 4GB RAM
2x 320GB SATA Hitachi
1x 200GB IDE Seagate Baracuda 7200
nVidia 9600gt
Ultra 600Wat PSU
Ever since i bought my new motherboard (Asus P5N-E SLI) and SATA hard drives, my IDE hard drive was messing up. I can not load up Windows on it. When i install Winxp x64 on one of my 320gb hard drives, it loads but not fast. Before WinXP loads (progress bar and logo) the screen stays balck for about 20secs or so before it reaches the load screen. And right before it reaches the load screen, there is a gray load bar on the bottom of the screen. Then comes the GUI progress bar. It takes about another 40secs for it to fully load into windows. When I unplug the IDE hard drive, the gray load bar does not appear and the load time is very quick, 15 seconds or so. Also, when I try to transfer data from SATA hard drive to IDe, 3gigs would take around 25mins or so. Is there a way I can fix this issue?

Answer:[SOLVED] Slow Boot Time, Slow Transfer Rates(Hard drive to hard drive)

Transferring files from SATA to IDE is a process- and IDE is no where near as fast as SATA, so you can expect some transfer times there. For the boot issue, it sounds like the computer is confused on what to load at first. Check your startup and recovery options by right-clicking my computer, advanced, startup and recovery, and see if multiple opearting systems are there. If so, remove the one that you know you don't want to load by editing the file.

Haven't been here in a while, so I tried searching for solutions to this problem and couldn't quite find any that matched my situation. A few results came close but no cigar.

Anyway here's my problem: My DVD drive just won't read DVDs! It reads CDs just fine but just won't recognize DVDs. I've had this drive for a long time now and haven't really had a reason to try a DVD-ROM until recently since Elder Scrolls: Oblivion was released. All I can really add is that it WAS an e-machines desktop until I replaced the CPU, mobo, vid card, and RAM (long time ago). I've filled in my specs where they should be filled in so feel free to check em if you need to.

My second problem is that my CD R/RW drive suddenly stopped working after my sister burnt a CD. I was making one for her boyfriend immediately after and it just refused to work from there on.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Answer:DVD Drive Reading CD but not DVD! CD R/RW Drive Suddenly Stopped Working!

lets troubleshoot:

- Update firmwares/drivers/Winupdates
- check teh media for physical damages (scratches etc)
- try burning with a CD-RW to test its not a bad CD batch you got
- disable all third party burning software (nero, roxio etc) and try test with WinXP's cd burning software
- open up the pc and check cables and such connected properly, reseat if needed
- try on another pc
- try this thread :
- how long have you had it in service? it may have well died out...

I had this idea, see if anybody has an opinion about this. My wife has an old XP computer I want to buy her a new one but she doesn't like the vista and she wants to keep the old xp operating system. What I want to do is take the old hard drive and put it in the new computer as the master and take the new hard drive and put it in as the slave erasing the vista off it. Then using the master slave way can I transfer the xp operating system and all her files and data from the old hard drive to the new one.

Answer:Transfer data from Hard Drive to Hard Drive

You cannot simply put the hard drive with XP on it in the new system to have the new system running XP either from the old drive or by transferring to the new drive. It just does not work like that
You need to install XP a fresh on the new system AND you will need a new XP license to do so.

Hey, could anyone suggest a solution?

Symptoms are as follows:

CDRW starts to write, but the green led on the front turns red after two minutes.
Then the DVD drive packs in, WMP 10 recognises the Album name, but refuses to play it. No error messages come up.

I figured its not the ide cable because it's registering the CD is there.

Also, about two months ago my ps2 ports stopped working on my motherboard, I now use a usb keyboard and mouse.

Also, my PSU died a month after that, which I replaced hassle free.

My CDRW is a Philips 5200 and my DVD drive is an ASUS

Any ideas?

Yours gratefully, Mike

try uninstalling them and rebooting

if you are on win XP do this.

Mycomputer> properties > hardware > device manager > DVD/CD Rom drives > right click on the drives uninstall them and reboot.

I had a regular install of Windows 7 on a WD 1 TB drive with the usual C:\ as the boot drive.

I just got a new SSD, so I set up a parallel or dual boot of Windows 7 on the SSD which is set up as the B: drive.

So when I boot into the Windows on the SSD (B:\) and run the WEI, it fails because it can't write a file to the drive.

Any suggestions? - I don't want to start changing the drive numbers as that will mess up my file associations. I tried editing the xml files under the Performance directory, but still can't get it to work.

Answer:WEI fails (cannot write file to hard drive) Boot drive set to B:\

Generally B: is not assigned to a hard drive, but can be used for a volume. I don't know if this is the reason you are having problems. I'd think modern BIOS might not have an issue with this, but older BIOS always assumed A: and B: were floppy drives. A Guy

Hi everyone!
There's really no short way to explain my issue and though I tried, please bear with me!

My old laptop that I've had for about 6 years now finally bit the dust (nothing lasts forever, right?) It was an eMachines E527 series with a 64-bit OS Windows 7 (I believe with Vista) and x64-based processor. I depended very much so on this laptop while in college and it indeed was good to me, a reliable piece of equipment up until about a year ago when the battery needed replacing (saw that one coming) though being a broke college student I just never quite got around to buying one. Needless to say the battery was rendered shot and could not hold a charge by itself so as a result the only way I could use my laptop was if it was on its charger, remaining plugged in 24/7 otherwise the battery would drain within minutes and the laptop would die (I know this ultimately bad for it, though I didn't have a choice so I used my laptop like this for about a year and a half.) When the power cord needed replacing about 4 months ago, I gave in and managed a Rocketfish Universal AC Laptop Adapter with 8 different tips included. I found the tip for my laptop and was able to use the adapter for my laptop happily for about 2 months when suddenly it too stopped charging my laptop (I started having to literally hold the cord a certain way in order for it to work) and then it got to the point where the tip had to be pushed in VERY hard and firmly and literally HELD in that position in order f... Answer:Data transfer from Windows 7 hard drive to Windows 8.1 Hard drive

You will need to remove the hard drive from the old laptop.

Purchase a hard drive enclosure or adapter, I recommend this one Sabrent USB-DSC7 Hard Drive Adapter - 2.5/ 3.5/ 5.25 SATA to USB 3.0 at

There are a lot of less expensive (cheaper) products, but many don't work when you take it out of the box.

Be sure to get one that works with 2.5 inch drives.

Connect the old drive to the adopter/enclosure, connect the power supply and plug the USB connector into the new computer. Then you can copy your files from the old drive.

You cannot copy your installed programs, they must be installed again from discs or downloads.

Put the jumper settings on the old disk to "slave" and install it into your machine onto a spare IDE cable. Then start your PC and windows should recognise it. After that you can copy it all from the old to the new. While you have the old one in, it could be worth while formatting it and using it as a backup for data etc.

I'm about to physically move my 2 hard drives from my old computer and install them into my new one. Will the hard drives read the same and WinXP pro boot up the same way as it did in my old PC? Anything I need to be aware of before I make this switch?

Answer:Hard Drive Transfer

To start off with unless your new computer has the same motherboard and chipset as the old one it is very unlikely to boot, if it does it will be full of errors. The easiest way to do it it to install a new disk, with a fresh installation of XP, then put each drive in indivudially as a slave drive and copy your files across. If you do not want to buy another hard drive and have enough room on your master drive, copy your slave drive files onto the master then format you slave drive and set it up as master in your new computer and copy the files across from your master which should be set up as a slve drive to do this.

I got rid of the old master drive, put in a 100 gb new master drive and re-installed windows xp on it. When I got it up and running, I realized I couldn't access my internal drive. It wants to format it. I want to keep the files, so I'm not going to do that. Is there any way I can access this drive without formatting it. It used to be the I: Drive and Now it is Labled as the D: drive, I dont know if that has anything to do with it. Any help at all would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

Answer:Hard Drive Transfer Help

A couple years ago I got a T40 and bought a new hard drive a Hitachi HTS721010G9AT00 100GB 7200RPM.  My T40 motherboard died, so I looked for a cheap T43 replacement found one and bought it.  Then I started reading about error 2100 reports with other hard drive error problems.  I haven't received my T43 yet, would this hard drive be a problem with the T43?  I thought maybe it would work because it is Hitachi and they took over IBM hard drive stuff . . . Thanks!

Answer:T40 hard drive transfer to T43

This drive shouldn't give you a problem in T43. If it does, there's a firmware update that should clear the "2010 error" for Hitachi drives. However, the hardware between T40 and T43 is different enough to call for a re-install of your OS to prevent future BSODs. Hope this helps.

Im building a new computer and the parts should arrive soon. When i get it up and running, is there some easy way to transfer all the files on my old computer to my new one? Can i just stick my old hard drive in and just copy all the files off of it? My new system will be an AMD with a lanparty ultra-d and my old system is a pentium4 with an asus motherboard if that helps.

Answer:Hard drive transfer

Should be fine, If its IDE just stick it in and put your new hard drive in too which will most likly be SATA and copy over the files you wish to keep or use norton ghost. If the hard drives SATA then same really boot up from the old one copy over the files you wish to keep.

Im thinking about buying a 300 GB Maxtor SATA hard drive to install in my computer to replace the existing 120 GB ATA model.

I would like to partition the 300 GB into two drives and install my existing OS from the old one onto the new. I dont want to have to re-install the OS because everything is running great.

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Answer:How to transfer OS from one hard drive to the other?

You can use an imaging program like Ghost or Acronis. I personally like Acronis, all you have to do is use the Clone disk option and it will take like 5 min. However I think it might make your main Partition the full size of the 300G disk, so you might have to go back and repartition it using something like Partition Magic

Is there any easy way to connect this to my new computer to get some data and files from it? My new system is a gateway 500s with 160 gigs and 512 ram. I was thinking of some kind of usb plug-in I could connect it to in the way you can connect two computers together and tranfer info from one computer to a new one. Thank for the help! Mike.

Putting this out there right away.  I do not know alot about computers.  I do know I don't have a lot of money to replace the laptop that just completely died a month after the warranty expired.  It is a Lenovo Thinkpad SL510, S/n xxxxxxx and the product ID is 28479XU.  Purchased 3 years ago.  I would like to know if I can take the hard drive out (which I was told by a knowledgeable computer person that it is OK with all the data on it) AND put it in my working Lenovo Thinkpad SL410, S/n xxxxxxx, Product ID 28427PU ?    The SL510 is really dead.  All efforts were tried to resusictate by same computer person.  Thanks

Answer:Transfer Hard Drive ?

Yes that HD swap should work. After you boot up the SL410 with the HD from the SL510, be sure to run ThinkVantage System Update to update device drivers for any hardware that might be different between the two systems.

How do I transfer entire contents, including OS from one HD to another?

Answer:Hard drive transfer

Generally you dont.

You format the new drive, install the new OS and then reinstall the programs.

There are programs such as Norton Ghost that will create a disk image but they are designed more for backup purposes.

The motherboard went out on my laptop & since repairing it would cost just as much as I paid for it in the first place. I have since bought a new laptop & would like to retrieve the files on the old one. The Hard Drive still works on it so that won't be a problem. I've been told I could use it as an external hardrive or I could simply transfer the files over to my working laptop with some kind of adapter. My question is what would be the the easiest & cheapest way to access the information on the old hard drive.

Answer:Transfer Hard Drive

An external case would probably be easiest.
You can get usb adapters, but if you mount the drive in a case,
you can get your files off, then use it for external storage or backup.
Make sure the case you use is the same type as the drive.
Sata or IDE.

Im getting a rig with xp home sp2 installed and I just moved so i cant find any of my cds for office 2003, norton goback, ect. Should I just transfer my hard drive to my new one, or is there some way I can just write the programs to the cd and somehow find the product keys.

If not, how should i transfer the drive (not physicallylol)

Answer:Hard drive transfer...

You need to install the programs not just copy or transfer them over. During the installation systems fiels are changed, registry keys are added, office may be even deeper than that.

Greetings all,

I have 2 hard drives in my machine. First, I have a WD Raptor 37gig for my Windows install. Second, I have a Maxtor 200gig for storage. Both are SATA. My question:

Any idea why it would take me roughly a half an hour or more to transfer a dvd from the Raptor to the Maxtor or vise verse? That doesn't seem right to me. It took that long even before SP 2. I can transfer that much data over my network in a fraction of the time.

Soyo Dragon 2 MoBo
AMD 3200+
1 gig Corsair RAM
WD Raptor 37gig SATA
Maxtor 200gig SATA
GeForce FX 5900
SB Live 5.1
XP Pro SP 2

Answer:Hard Drive Transfer

Maybe one of your drives is badly fragmented? Or maybe you don't have the right drivers installed? Or maybe DMA is off?

Hi.  This is my first post so keep that in mind :D
I have been experiencing some issues regarding my hard drive and im pretty sure it is dead and have decided to get a new one.  The thing is i have so much unwanted stuff on my old hard drive that i don't even want to do a transfer because in my mind downloading the several games i play on a regular basis isn't really a hassle and i don't have anything like pictures and stuff that i want to save.
My question is are there things on my hard drive that need to be transferred other than the OS?  Things i dont know about?  And if i do get a new hard drive will i be able to install my windows 7 copy on it when i have already installed it on my hard drive im using now?
Sorry if these are silly questions i just need to be clear on what will happen if i get a new HDD.  Thanks

Answer:Hard drive transfer?

Hello Enisa, and welcome to BC!
I will answer your queries in order:
You said:

are there things on my hard drive that need to be transferred other than the OS

Yes there are.
In order to fully answer your question, I must know something: do you have a System Installation disc from your computer manufacturer that came with your computer when you purchased it, or do you have a full, retail CD of Windows 7 from Microsoft? IF you have a retail copy of Windows 7 from Microsoft, do you also have a CD from the computer manufacturer labeled as "system disk", "restore disk" or somesuch title? This is very important because it will determine what we do next.
Also, please post the manufacturer and model of your computer.

And if i do get a new hard drive will i be able to install my windows 7 copy on it when i have already installed it on my hard drive im using now?

Yes. As long as you do not change the motherboard in the computer you will have no problems.

Sorry if these are silly questions

I have an older generic tower PC with a P2 processor that is not worth repairing (bad mainboard or CPU - has no power, new ATX PS did nothing, no life at all)...

There is an operating system and data on the hard drive. Can I install the hard drive into a different PC and recover the data that is on the drive? If so, how?

Please help - Thanks!

Answer:How can I transfer a hard drive to a different PC?

Just plug the drive into another machine, make sure that the jumpers on it are set for "Slave", and then boot up the machine.

Ey guys,

Need some info on solving a bit of a problem ive got. I got a 120Gb HDD running XP that will no longer boot XP, the problem is insolveable, unless by reformat. In just saying that, i cannot reformat as there is much valuable information on the drive. However, i do have a 5Gb HDD that has windows 98 running on it. Is it possible to hook that one up in my computer, boot Win 98 off it, so I could access my other drive and burn the information i required to DVD's? And then reformat?
Any help is aprreciated, thx

Answer:Hard Drive Transfer

Have you considered doing a repair of your Xp installation?
What sort of error messages are you getting that prevents you from booting into Xp?
Here's one way of booting up with your 5Gb HDD.......But before you do this, give us some more info about why it won't boot......
You could try connecting the 120Gb HDD as a 'slave', and the 5Gb as the 'master'.
To do this physically look at the pins [next to the power plug] on each of the drives and set the jumper pins to the appropriate slots [the master might not need any pins at all] will show [hopefully] 'Single or Master' without any pins, and the other will need to connected as a 'Slave'.
Your biggest problem will be that you might not have enough space with your 5Gb HDD...if you can get it to boot, try copying what you need to CD's, but don't try copying any of the system files, as they will not work afterwards.
Let us all know the answers to these questions please.

I am trying to transfer a primary hard drive from one computer to another. I am also transferring a CD-writer. The hard drive was the boot hard drive in the older computer, it will still be the boot hard drive. The CD-writer was a secondary CD on the old computer, it will be the primary CD on the newer one. The newer computer is not recognizing the CD's. When it starts it goes into the BIOS. It begins to load Windows 2000, but does not complete. I get a message telling me that boot drives are not accessible. In the Bios the hard drive appears o.k. but the CD?s are not registering. I also have a secondary hard drive, but have disconnected it until I get the others sorted out. The older computer is a Dell optiplex GX100 (a celeron 800) and the newer one is a dell optiplex GX400 (a Pentium 4). Do CD?s have jumpers to set?

My brother is building me a computer. He'd like to put the operating system on one hard drive and my files and programs on another.

My question is: When he transfers my program files and other files over, will I just be able to click on a program as usual and it will run? or do these all have to be installed again through the executable file. I don't want to lose anything as I've got a lot of money tied up especially in music Karaoke files.

What is the best way to do this?

Answer:Hard Drive Transfer

You need to install all the programs fresh, you can't simply copy them over.

Is there anyway to move my old hard drive to a new machine without making it the slave to a master currently in my new machine. In otherwords, can I order (or build) a new machine without a hard drive, and merely move my current hard drive and all of its existing data/files/programs (from my old machine) to the new machine as a single hard drive?

Thanks ahead of time for the replys!

A couple of weeks ago, my computer crashed. I got the blue screen, and ever since I haven't been able to boot it up. It was a standard dell, and ran XP, it also had a Barracuda 7200.7 hdd. Whenever I tried to boot it, it would get to the Windows XP loading screen, and stall for a couple of minutes and then go to a blue screen saying fatal system error. This isn't really too bad of a problem, because I was going to reformat right now anyways, but the problem is that I don't want to loose all of the files off of my drive. I recently got a new computer, an IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad, so the plan was to transfer the files from my hdd to my new laptop, but this is where I run into trouble. I pulled the hdd on the desktop, and since I have no desire to/don't know if it's possible to set it as a slave on my laptop skipped that step and bought an IDE-USB adapter. Here's a link: . But I can't figure out how to attach it to my hdd. The jumper on the drive isn't exposed and says factory use only, and  I am just overall confused right now. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
