[SOLVED] Program/Application Connection Issues

Question: [SOLVED] Program/Application Connection Issues

Hello all. I have myself a rather vexing issue going on with my operating system (XP x64 Edition SP2) that has me baffled, especially since it has survived an almost foolproof barrage of fixes.

Basically, I noticed very recently that one of my programs that requires an internet connection is unable to connect to the internet, despite having worked fine for almost 2 years now. I blew it off at first, and when I went back again to try it I had the same problem. I ended up downloading another, similar program, and had that problem again. I noticed after this, that some of my games (and other applications) that require an internet connection to update and the like, also are now unable to connect to the internet to perform their functions. Even one of my malware scanners, which requires that it is up to date before being able to run, could not update itself (I manually updated it).

Not sure if this is relevant, but my clock was reset by itself to July 1st 2005, and after I manually reset it, it didn't change itself back (yet).

So in a nutshell, I did some research and found one other guy with a similar problem to my own, which he identified as a worm in his WINDOWS registry. He didn't specify how he removed it.

I've since run my anti-virus software (BitDefender), CCleaner, Ad-aware, Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, HijackThis, and am currently scanning with SUPERAntiSpyware and I've had no luck. Malwarebytes discovered some potentially false positives ignored by Ad-aware and my anti-virus, which I deleted anyway because they were not important files. A restart later and the problem persisted. HijackThis discovered a few minor things that does not appear to have fixed the issue.

If anyone has another potential fix, I'd really appreciate it. This issue has me close to pulling out some hairs--I mean, it's not something that appears to be crippling of my computer (everything else functions as it should), but being unable to update some of my games and applications is a huge issue. Being unable to play some of them is even worse (as an update is necessary before I can even sign in, etc).

Thanks for reading, I'm going to try to get some sleep now...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: [SOLVED] Program/Application Connection Issues

BitDefender was the culprit. Unfortunately, just disabling the firewall didn't help, I had to completely uninstall it to discover the problem is now fixed.

Be wary of BitDefender's gameSafe I suppose.

Hello. I have been having problems with any 3rd party program connecting to the internet. It ranges from the programs I use from td ameritrade, to ad-aware trying to do updates, to utorrent... I have already made sure that all the programs are allowed in the windows firewall. I have also accessed the router/modem combo that my ISP had given me recently and tured off the firewall setting in the router.

I thought it could have been a port issue so after accessing the router I found there were no advanced options to do port forwarding. I then called my ISP tech support and they assured me they only close 6 ports that and the rest are open for communication and advised me that it was a local (windows) problem. I have even shut down the firewall completely and still have no luck. Any input/suggestions would be much appriciated.

had this problem started a few weeks ago, really sick of it. whenever i open itunes/skype/any file vista asks me what application i want to launch it with. i cant even go to system restore and return it to a previous setting as i dont know what application to get on the program.

please help, i know very little about computers

Answer:Solved: Whenever I open a program it asks what application id like to launch with

Try this fix: EXEFIX

Unzip the fix and extract the .REG file to the Desktop. Right-click the .REG file and choose Merge. Note that you need to be an Administrator to apply this fix.

Reboot the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I have Vista 64-bit Home, and I'm trying to install the Crysis Sandbox Editor, but every time I do I get this error message:

Now, I can't exactly set the program with admin privileges, because it's an EXE, but I am logged in as an admin and this is still happening, any help?

Also, does anyone know if there's anything to installing the sandbox beyond just extracting the executable from the CD to the Desktop and running it? Maybe that's the problem.

Just upgraded to WinXP Pro from Win98se and 95% of my paid for programs run.

Computer is a Dell Optiplex GX270 with 512MB RAM.

Now my problem. I have a CAD program that cost me $600 that ran well (perfectly, in fact) before the 'Upgrade'. Now all I get is a splash screen, and no error messages. A secondary program that is part of that suite runs fine.

Is there a step function in XP that will allow me to start the program and look for error messages during the start routine for that program? The splash screen stays on-screen for two seconds, then clears back to the desktop. I think it's looking for a DLL but how do I find out?

Need I mention I don't know where the original key or CD for that program is? Or that the company is out of business? But XP isn't telling me I need to reinstall.

I have a full backup copy of the drive (on another drive) pre-WinXP and of course I could back out of the installation on this drive but want the XP upgrade. I just need this program to run.

Answer:[SOLVED] Upgrade install issues...won't run program

Check Event Viewer from problems on boot, and on program launch.

What's the name of the program? A $600 program should have some support somewhere, even if the company is out of business.

Are you running the .exe in emulation mode?

Yesterday, I was attempting to install the program to run my Verizon internet air card. At the end of the installation process, the program froze. So, I closed the program and attempted to reinstall it. However, when I try to do so, it says "The file \menu.ini could not be opened."
I went into the control panel options to try to delete the existing corrupted file. However, when I try to do so it says "Could not open INSTALL.LOG" file.
I then tried to delete the program using EasyCleaner 2.0. However, it prompts me saying it was unable to write the delete code.
How do I go about removing the old program or enabling myself to install the program correctly?

Answer:Solved: Issues Installing/Deleting a Program

Try Revo Uninstaller to uninstall the old program, then try installing again.

I am unable to connect to the internet while using my PC.

My network consists of the following: A Time Warner Cable modem, Linksys wrt54g Router (v8), a PC running Vista Home edition connected via Ethernet cable, and a PC connected using a Netgear Wireless USB Adapter WG111.

Basically, what happened was this.

I was connected to the internet on my PC by means of the Netgear adapter, when I discovered that I had been infected by some type of malware called 'Malware Defense'. It basically imitates Windows Defender, but is an obviously malicious program. It disabled my McAfee virus protection. It accessed the internet by itself and poured links to pornographic websites onto my desktop. Because this happened so rapidly, I sort of panicked and pulled out the USB adapter, thus disconnecting it from the internet. The problem with Malware Defense was ended for a moment, due to this, but now I can't access the internet.

At first I thought it was the security settings on the router. I even disabled all security all together. The computer still would not connect. The Netgear adapter acted as though it found the network, but it was just unable to connect. Occasionally I would get the status of 'limited or no connectivity'. Other times I would get the notice stating: "the settings saved on this computer do not match the requirements of the network.'

Other wireless things connect fine. My Nintendo Wii acessed the internet, as well as a friend's ... Read more

Answer:Solved: Connection Issues

Try deleting the current connection. Then, from a command prompt:

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

Reboot and try to create the connection again.

The problem may not be due to what you did at all since many malware types inactivate the connection so you can't download a fix.

hi i resently signed up with virgin media cable broadband (30 mb) and i have been experiencing some odd issues when it come to connecting to the router.

my laptop will connect wirelessly fine when it starts up buy if i try to connect manualy/ re-connect it comes up as an unidentified network (so no internet connection) the only way to solvle this is to restart the computer and let it connect automaticly. secondly when i tried connecting via an ethanet cable it also came up with an unidentified network.

my house mate on the other hand has a diffrent issue. his laptop will connect fine via the ethanet cable. he can connect via wireless but it keeps "lossing connection" (in commas due to a remaining connection with skype but no other internet features) this is only resolved when the laptop connected via ethanet cable where the whole issue is sorted for a short while.

any ideas as to what is going on here and how to resolve them.
on a side note the internet connection speed has dropped hugely from around 20 mb to 1-2mb this could be related but i doubt it

the router is the supplied virgin media superhub

thanks in advance for any help

i would check with virgin on the speed issues

as you have two machines - this may get confusing - so lets focus just on your PC for now

when its working post back an ipconfig /all , three ping tests, xirrus screen shot - and then repeat ALL the tests when it disconnects and post all results here
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

I am having trouble with my internet. I can get onto explorer easy, but when I try to use programs that require a internet connection it does not work. Xfire, Steam, McAfee, Spybot, Gunz. None of these will connect. I checked my windows firewall and I have these all on the exceptions list. It was working fine last week until I crashed to a blue screen. Then the issues started happening. A little off topic, but maybe not, my ram is bad. Could that have effected the connection with these things? It was bad when it worked though.

We have an ASUS k72jr-c1 laptop that started having internet connection issues the last two weeks. It started with not being able to connect with public wifi. Now at home, I can restart the computer, it will connect to the internet fine, but after a while dropbox can't get a secure connection, webpages begin to not load all the time, and thunderbird can't connect. This morning I turned it on and it everything was fine for around an hour, then it lost the secure connection to dropbox. It is also causing problems connecting to game servers or in-game stores. (The desktop and ipads are not having any connection issues, so I'm pretty sure it's an issue with/on the laptop).

It's running Windows 7, which was last updated 7/12. I also ran a disk cleaner, backed up and fixed the registry, and a thorough virus scan, which was negative.

Control Panel/Internet Options/Connections/LAN settings has everything unchecked (saw that on another post).

Any help would be appreciated

I have a Mac G4 with OS 8.6 (old-skool, I know) and I've been using Fetch 3.0.3 for 2 years now. In the last few days I have not been able to establish a connection. There have only been 2 websites that I always upload to and both are no longer working.

When I click File/New Connection it looks as though it's connecting because it goes through the same steps it always has before:

Getting info...
Getting dir name...
Getting file list...

And then it hangs on this for awhile (with the little doggie icon galloping away). Eventually I get one of 2 error messages:

1) Server file error: Data connection closed, transfer aborted

2) Server response: Can't build data connection: Connection timed out

This program was working smoothly a week ago and I've never had any problems before. Now this. I did not alter any preferences or change my internet configuration. I tried uninstalling Fetch and re-installing -- no success. I also downloaded the trial version of Fetch 4.0 and I get the same errors.

Anyone else encounter something like this? I'd appreciate any help. My fate is in your hands (as I have files to upload, pronto!)

Answer:[SOLVED] Connection issues with Fetch FTP

Hiya and welcome

My first MAC question. Wahay!!!!

Having a look here:

It says:

5. The server says "Invalid PORT Command" or "Can't build data connection. Connection refused."

These problems can usually be resolved by checking the "Use passive mode transfers (PASV)" box in the Firewall section of PreferencesClick to expand...

Have you tried that?

The subject computer is cable connected. No network - except a LAN. No router. Maintenance neglected.

The problem is one of varying Internet accessibility. One minute it will connect the next it won't.

Trying to help a neighbour out two or three weeks ago and with very little experience of Win2k I found it heavily infected with viruses and trojans. I was able to install and update AVG. Some 70 viruses/trojans were quarantined and deleted. ASquared found several more and removed them. I did the usual cleanup routines, scanned and defragged the C: drive. It was working when I finished. AVG was set to run and update automatically. Windows Updates reported non needed.

Yesterday the on/off connectivity behaviour returned. My neighbour ran AVG -(which had run automatically some 12 hrs prior - a scan of the entire system and yielding no infections). This time he told me of infections (trojans) which had been quarantined and the deleted by him.

I ran Belarc and learned that many updates had failed to install. The Update site reports it is unable to display, after scanning, those updates available. I ran AVG - clean.

The only error message is the page cannot be displayed one. WinFixer is a regular pop-up.

Can Win2k be 'system restored'? Can its registry be restored? The WinME commands seem meaningless.

Any suggestions as to how I might proceed would be much appreciated.

Answer:Solved: Win2k: Connection Issues.

I am sitting in front of a Dell Inspiron 6000 running windows XP SP2. I am currently trying to connect to my wireless router, but the only thing this computer does is constantly aquiring network address. I have jumpped through tons and tons of forums. I have tried Run > CMD > netsh int ip reset.log & netsh winsock reset catalog, ipconfig /release /renew, downloaded WinsockxpFix and ran, restarting some Services in services.msc, removed all temp and cookie folder contents, ran AVG 8.0 & unupdated Malewarebytes Anti-maleware, used the Repair function many times, checked on if the laptop was set to use a Static IP or to have DHCP be automatic.... HULP!

And now... the wireless icon (windows default) stay's green and 'connected' to my wifi SSID but it just aquires network address for a few minutes then disconnects

I did overhear/read someone talking about their Norton internet security program was causing similar problems but I'd rather get more help before I start uninstalling programs.

I'm starting to get really lost with this problem. I ways trying to connect a game launcher and it wouldn't connect, and it won't connect to half of the websites that I am trying to access. With the launcher and game website I was reading that it could be something being blocked, so I uninstalled my anti-virus, which did not fix the problem (I have since then reinstalled). I can access things like facebook and such fine, but I cannot access many of the help sites I am trying to view. I get ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT or could not load page. I have tried a number of things myself such as:

(in command prompt)
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
nslookup set debug

I am reading a lot of other stuff between the DNS and DCHMP or something and at this point I am out of my depth.

I can get the wireless and the LAN line to connect. However the LAN line does not recieve any packets, but sends them. The wireless can receive and send packets, but if the LAN line is connected the wireless will not work either. If I don't use the LAN linethe wireless does work however it disconnects frequently, which I believe is because I'm on a college unsecured wireless network. I have tried ipconfig commands as well as the winsock fix, but they have not worked. I've also checked for new drivers / un-installed and re-installed them and still it doesn't work.

I have two desktops, one running Windows 7 and one running XP. The XP rig has about 50GB of data that I want to transfer to the newer machine, and I also want a working LAN for gaming. The machines are connected directly to each other with a TP cable. I followed the recommendations I could find, made sure the machines are in the same workgroup, that the user accounts have the same name on both machines, and installed lltd on the XP machine.

I could always ping the machines IP (I have a fixed IP as the alternate config in XP, and as alternative config for TCP/IP v4 in win 7) from the command prompt. can get the machines to "see" each other on the network, at least partially. The XP rig lists both machines under "Microsoft windows network/entire network/workgroup name", but the win7 machines doesnt list the xp rig under "network". I can however see both machines under "see full map" in the network and sharing center (screenshot uploaded to imageshack). I cant access the XP rig from there.

I have set the folders that I want to transfer as shared on the XP rig, and shut down windows firewall as well as my antivirus. What else do I have to do to set up the connection so that I can copy the files?

A second problem is that Windows 7 always defaults to some "unknown network" setting when I boot up connected to the older machine. This default is a public network, and I have to manually set the network to use the "home or work&q... Read more

Alright, about a week ago, Windows XP stopped connecting to the internet. My first instinct was to reset the router, check connections, and all possible hardware culprits. Everything was fine, though (including the drivers), and in the "local area network" it even shows the status as "connected," so XP is recognizing it. Also, on my Linux partition, I can still connect to the internet fine, so it has to be a software issue within XP.

I tried resetting the DNS by

ipconfig /release && ipconfig /renew && ipconfig /flushdns && iipconfig /registerdns
but this didn't change anything. Also I can't connect to Google via, so it's not a DNS problem.

I checked the TCP/IP properties and made sure it was set to "obtain address automatically, which it was. I tried the "repair connection" option, but again, nothing.

I tried to reset the ip with

netsh int ip reset ip_reset.txt
, nothing. I cannot ping any outside ip's, and I cannot ping my router either.

Does anyone know what the problem is here? Is there a way I can reset all my connection settings or "default" it? Also, is it possible that some of the services involved in connecting to the internet could be disabled? I checked and they all seemed functioning, but I don't have all of them memorized, so maybe I'm missing something.

Most of the time I am at a download speed of 80kb/s or slower (or none at all). Very rarely it goes up to 5-7mb/s (where it is supposed to be). It never stays anywhere near a constant rate.

I set the channel on the router as far from interfering networks as possible.

The 2 things I've noticed:

My IP address will not change after clearing and renewing it.

there is a ip6 tunneling interface that I don't remember setting up (and I don't know if the ISP, modem, and/or router are compatable).

It's a desktop PC running Windows 7. I have norton internet security. The router is a Linksys WRT54G running dd-wrt. Wired connections do not have the speed problems and I don't think other wireless devices do either (I've only used my phone to a short degree on the network and I haven't heard any complaints about my friends xbox).

some relevent info:

Is the dhcp server in the router somethingI should have set up? do I turn it off? I had only previously used this router as a connection point using a cantenna, this is my first time using it as a router.

The tool the forum says to download and run just pops up a message that it's not a valid win32 application.

any help with anything to do with these issues would be greatly appreciated!

Like said in the title; it is close to impossible for me to connect to Facebook! I don't want any miss understanding I can occasionally connect, I want to stress the word "occasionally" because I've been trying for the past few months non-stop (when I say non-stop I mean for an hour or so until I give up) and when I do connect, which is about 1/10,000 attempts, it runs rather slow, like its struggling to stay connected, I've noticed a pattern that its somewhat easier ( I don't know if its just random statistical luck) to connect after 0:00 GMT.

Anyway, I've done the usual stuff like checked if I could connect using other web browsers ( I'm using Google chrome but I checked using Firefox and internet explorer) I couldn't connect on any of them and the problem is only with Facebook and my computer specifically. Other computers in the same house, and also my iPod, can connect to Facebook just fine. Also I've tried un-installing and re-installing Google chrome with no luck, I've looked up other solutions with no success such as going on internet explorer > internet options> connections > Lan settings and making sure some box in un-ticked. with no luck. I've even tried going on CMD and pinging Facebook and I'm losing no packets with a Min ping of 97ms and a Max ping of 98ms.

I've tried scanning for a virus with no success finding any, and I've even tried converting to religion and praying to god ... Read more

Currently i have a modem downstairs, inwhich a router is connected. From the router i have an ethernetcable that runs upstairs to my bedroom. This ethernet cable is attached to my PC and everything works fine. I am currently using my xbox downstairs connected to the router also. However i want to move the xbox up to my bedroom. The problem being that i only have 1 ethernet cable available in my room. (My parents object to another one being fitted. And wireless wont work in my house.)

I was wondering whether i would be able to connect the Ethernet cable in my bedroom to a second router and then connect my XBox and PC via the router. And whether i would be able to access the internet on both systems at the same time.

I was intially looking at an ethernet switch to acheive this as they seem cheaper, but i read that i wouldnt be able to access the internet on the second device.

If the router idea would work, would compatability be an issue (ie. would i need to buy the same router to the one i have downstairs).

Any help or suggestions are welcome. thankyou

Folks, hope you can help point me in the right direction on what I'm missing out here.

I have a setup of 2 routers:

WAN IP: 170.x.x.x (connects to the Internet)

I have PCs in both the 192.168.1.x and 192.168.0.x segments. All PCs do not have any problems accessing the Internet.

The problem I am facing is that PCs in Router1 cannot access PCs in Router2. Conversely, PCs in Router2 have no problems in accessing PCs in Router1.

I was initially thinking the solution is to add a route definition in Router1: Route through But this is not working...Router1 PCs still cannot ping/see Router2 PCs. Been pulling my hair trying to get with no success at all.

Incidentally, from a PC in the 192.168.1.x subnet, doing a traceroute to (Router2's WAN IP) doesn't work, but ping to works. Not sure if this makes sense.

Please anyone can help shed some light on this? Thanks.

Answer:Solved: Two Routers Connection Issues

If you want everything on the same LAN don't daisy-chain the routers. Instead ...

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address, for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. [You will not need a cross-over cable if one of the "routers" is a comp... Read more

This is affecting both my Outlook 2003 & 2007 when attempting to connect to my exchange server (RPC over HTTP, i believe)

I get an error message that says: The action could not be completed. The connection the the Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable. Outlok mus be online or connected to complete this action.

I contacted my support but they said it's working fine that they're able to connect to it via outlook and I can use webmail so it mus be someting wrong with my connection settings either through my firewall or router.

I disabled the firewall and it still didn't work... poked around in the router couldn't find anything to that would look like it would help.

Any suggestions?

Since installing a D-Link DIR-615 Wireless-N router (hardware revision E3, firmware 5.10NA) for a client her connection in Outlook 2010 (connected to her hosted Exchange account over HTTP/RPC) keeps intermittently dropping. This is reflected in the logs (Event Viewer): "Connection to Microsoft Exchange has been lost. Outlook will restore the connection when possible." followed by an entry seconds to minutes later, "Connection to Microsoft Exchange has been restored." There are hundreds of these entries in a small time span (4 to 8 hours).

I factory reset, re-flashed the firmware and factory reset again the router, but still have the connection issues. This problem was not happening with the previous routers in place (dying Netgear router and on loan Linksys WRT54G router). Furthermore, I set up her Exchange account and a remote network (also using Outlook 2010) which has a different router (D-Link DIR-655) and I didn't get the intermittent connection issues.

Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: DIR-615 Causing Outlook Connection Issues?

It is obviously the router in question so I would get with D-Link and see if it is something peculiar to this router or a setting that can be tweeked.

I've been googling the crap out of how to resolve my wifi connectivity issue and so far nothing has worked. I have truely tried to self-service here and I am just not being successful, so I figured, welp! Time to consult the experts!! Would appreciate your insights!

Summary of Issue:
Essentially, wifi disconnects frequently/intermittently, but only on my lenovo thinkpad. It is often enough that I have a huge ethernet cable that I drag through my house (obviously NOT something a laptop user should need to do!) I purchased a generic USB 802.11b Wireless Lan Adapter from a seller on Ebay. I am able to connect to my neighbors unsecured network across the street, but can not get an IP address when trying to log into my own network running 64 bit WEP. If I disable WEP, I can connect. I have spent the last two evenings trying to resolve this but with no success. Anybody have any idea what could be going on. I have tried different keys, used both the windows wireless interface and also tried the application that came with the adapter. Seems that neither are able to resolve the encryption.

Other than trying to find an updated driver and/or utility for the adaptor, I can't think of much else.

I'm assuming that you've been careful to NOT use key on one device and password-that-gets-translated-to-key on the other, and to use key1 (or key2 or ...) on both devices.

After trouble shooting on my own, I'm stuck. My current situation is that I have a Netopia (Cayman 3346) DSL modem-router (not wireless) that is connected to a (Linksys E100) wireless router. I currently run a small business that has two other computers connected through the Linksys router and are properly configured on the network.

Problems, Thursday night was the last time I could connect using the wireless connection. I cannot connect wirelessly now, but I can connect through the Netopia modem-router.

Manual Troubleshooting included:

-CMD for proper release/renew (IP shows 192.)
-Hard reset both modem and router.
-Manually configured the Linksys router.
-Called Netopia and manually configured modem-router successfully
-Again, computers hard-wired to modem-router will connect.
-Lights on Linksys router are lit and working properly (i.e wifi icon, power, and line 1)

Any ideas? I found in the Netopia settings of the WAN to be configured this way, should I change to IP Address?

Any help would be appreciated as my business is hindered by only having one computer operational.

Hi Everyone

I truly hope someone can help me figure out what is going on with my laptop
and its connections.

I recently reinstalled Windows 7 on my laptop, and everything has been working
smoothly and great, however a day ago the internet connection decided to stop
working, without me changing anything whatsoever. No new installs, updates etc.
Times like these i swear there are windows bugs just waiting to wake up and annoy

Im using the WIFI to connect to my network, and i can still see computers on the
network, but the internet doesnt work(has warning mark over signal strength).

It strangely enough does the exact same thing when i connect with a network cable
instead and turn off the wifi.

I feel it may be a driver issue or something similar as i saw warning marks in my network
controllers section of device manager recently, but it comes and goes.

I have a MSI CR620 Laptop with Atheros AR5B95, WIFI Module.

I have tried racking my brain as to why its connecting to the network, but not the internet.
All other computers linked via WIFI or cable to my router/hub works great, and as mentioned
the laptop worked perfectly until just yesterday.

Any advice, suggestions, methods?

Greatly Appreciated

I am having difficulty remaining connected to my wireless network. If I am connected for a period of no less than a week, I will eventually lose connection for several days. One strange thing that also happens is that when I do try reconnecting to my network it stays connected for 30 seconds to about 1 minute. Another thing I sometimes notice is after getting disconnected and trying to immediately reconnect I will receive an ip address conflict message. I have looked in my router's setup page and have not found any ip address conflicts. I have also allowed the computer's MAC address in the router. There are 3 other computers connected to the network (not simultaneously) and they have no issues. I am also able to connect to a nearby unencrypted network without any issues. This problem has been occuring for around two or three weeks about 2 weeks after I upgraded from Vista.

Hi peoples new to this forum but seems like there are many experts which is what I need!

OK here goes....recently my ISP helpfully provided me with a new wireless router. I have a main pc running Windows 7 which is hardwired by ethernet cable. I then have 2 laptops running Windows 7 and 2 running Vista. Also 2 PS3's and 3 ipod touch all using the wireless router. Everything connected fine first time and works perfectly on the new router except one of the laptops running Vista. This just plain refuses to connect - when you add the connection it says "identifying network" for about 30 seconds then says "unidentified public network" and shows local access only with no internet. Normally when you connect to a new network for the first time on vista it brings up an option of "Home" or "Public" for the network. This didn't happen for some reason and now I cannot get out of this state. I have read that this can be caused by a firewall issue although this same machine was happily connected to my old wireless router and no settings have been changed! I have totally disabled windows firewall but to no avail. I have gone through all the windows troubleshooting but just keep going round in circles. Have also disabled the network adapter, uninstalled the driver, reinstalled, enabled but still keeps doing the same thing. This is driving me maddddd!!!!!

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.

The Xbox goes through a "connectivity test" where it checks for adapter, IP, DNS...etc.

Recognizes that Network adapter is "Wired" hence the ethernet cable.

Then goes onto checking for IP address and FAILS.

Dunno what to do to get this working, any help would be much appreciated.

As you may have surmised, I updated Vista a couple of days ago with the most recent update (I don't remember exactly what I updated). I simply followed the recommended links, etc. Following that, I updated ZoneAlarm, also.

The day after the update, I noted that zone alarm was no longer on my computer (can't find it anywhere) and I no longer have the ability to connect to the internet. When I look at the Network Center and diagnose the problem the errors that come up are "the NVIDIA nForce Network controller is having having hardware or driver related issues" and "the Broadcom 802.11b WLAN is having hardware or driver related issues." I checked the WLAN's on.

For the life of me I can't figure out what's up. I checked on the drivers: I looked for an update on the computer and it says that both devices are running the optimal drivers.

Any ideas????

I just purchased a new laptop yesterday and I'm already having intermittent connection issues. I have an Asus X83v, with 64bit Vista and I'm currently using Mozilla Firefox. I also have a Linksys Wireless- G Router, model WRT54G2 v.1. So I brought the laptop home and the internet worked properly for about 30 minutes, then all of a sudden, browsers would not work anymore. This problem has continued all last night and tonight. I have to either disconnect or repair to fix the problem. I was at my mother's house all day today and my computer had no problem staying connected to her Linksys router. We've had this router for about 6 months and both of our laptops running XP have not had any problem with this router. Oh, I also checked IE and that wouldn't bring pages up either. And I already downloaded the newest firmware for the router. And made sure the drivers for my wifi was updated. Please help!

That router is pretty ancient at v.1, you bought this new 6 months ago?
Did you reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure after loading the latest firmware?

Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:

Disable the IP Helper service:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog

Disable IPv6:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.

Hold the Windows key and type R, enter regedit and press Enter.
Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey to be updated.

Problem: I tried plugging my Linksys Router into the hardwired drop that the landlord installed in my apartment. I used both a normal Cat5 and a Cat5 crossover and plugged them into my "Internet" (uplink) drop on my router. Neither situation shares the internet to the other computers on the router.

I decided to try to use Internet Connection Sharing from the PC. Pluged the PC into the wall - I have internet no problems. Set up ICS on that machine and when I use a cross over cable to go from the PC to any of the laptops the laptop has internet no problems.

Next step was to try both a cat5 and a cat5 cross over to go from the 2nd NIC on the PC to the uplink on the router. Again won't share across other computers (and I did remember to change the default on the router to

I am using at linksys wrt110 router to connect to the internet. I had my dell desktop running XP ired into the router and everything was fine. when I use my laptop either wireless or wired into the second connection on the router, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes to establish a connection.

I had this same problem and I opened a thread but I could not do the recommendation that terrynet sugested because the laptop ws a work laptop and I did not have admin rights to do the netsh commands.
I have now replaced the desktop with a dell latitude e6400 laptop running windows 7 pro. I am having the same issue where it takes 5 minutes.

I did the three netsh commands
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

and I am still having the issue. I am not sure how long it is suppose to take to connect a laptop wirelessly to the net. maybe 5 minutes is what it takes.

terrynet also asked "What firewall or security suite is, or ever was, on the laptop's system?". ia m not sure how to find this. i can get to the "windows firewall' section in control panel, but I am not sure what you want to tell you.
I am including the ipconfig all stats

I got a Belkin wireless modem router this morning, and have set it up and got my laptop (Acer Aspire 5050 series, on Vista) and the family PC both working wirelessly. But on both mahines it is impossible to access any Microsoft sites, and a few other sites that we've tried (gamefaqs, myspace).

I started off with IE on the laptop, but have downloaded Firefox, and we use Opera on the PC. Currently using the laptop though. I've got Windows Firewall disabled, but that's not helped at all.

I've had this problem for quite a long time, and it's started to get really irritating, so I hope someone can help!
From time to time (every 10 minutes or so), my connection to the internet becomes extremely slow or completely nonexistent (I'm still connected, but pages will not load). This slowdown lasts for 4-5 minutes, and then disappears completely. Usually I do not get any error messages, but Chrome has rarely reported that "DNS lookup failed". I've tried changing my default DNS servers to an open DNS, but no luck. When I try to run the network troubleshooter (Windows Network Diagnostics), it cannot find any problem. When running the ping command during these slowdowns, it returns a packet loss rate of around 60-100%.
None of the other devices on the network have the same problem.
I've had the exact same problems with two different WiFi adapters (Netgear WNDA4100 and some Belkin adapter).
Another (but not serious) issue is that Windows does not seem able to connect to the network automatically. Might this have something to do with the slowdowns?

I've tried:
-resetting the Winsock Catalog (netsh winsock reset)
-buying a new wireless adapter
-checking for malware (spambots can impact performance, but don't explain the massive packet loss)
-reinstalling the driver for the wireless adapter

I've posted the results for the ipconfig /all, and pathping commands in a .txt file. If there's any more information you need, ... Read more

Hi there, I have been trying to solve this problem by searching through other people's previous threads, but I am having trouble getting any of the solutions to work for me. I can connect using an ethernet cable through my modem, but for some reason my laptop will not connect wirelessly anymore. I often get the message that it cannot communicate with the primary DNS server, usually tells me to reset my adapter which I do and nothing changes. Sometimes my LAN connection doesn't work at first, but if I reset it, it will work. Any help would be awesome, this is getting really frustrating!

Ever since I updated Windows 7 with the Windows Defender -kb915597 (Definition 1.145.1035.0) update, I have had significant packet loss and can hardly connect to anything on the internet. Sites either take forever to load OR they don't load at all. I did malware scans and virus scans they came up clean.I have checked my connection in my laptop (which I am making this post on because it was impossible on my desktop) and it connect just find and the speed test come out correct. I even called my internet provider and they sent out a tech who said the connection was find as well after various tests.

I have disabled Windows Defender, but that has not helped the connectivity issues at all.

I'm at a loss at what I should do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello guys, first time poster here, long time pc user, still at some kind of advanced-frustrated-beginner stage.

Anyway rather than in a simple manner explain technical terms with other technical error terms (which I don't know anyway), please bear with me as I walk you through my situation:
I've moved in with my GF and her dad and he's the guy that set up all the net stuff here (was before my time) and now he can't really remember how everything's connected, which became a problem when we recently bumped into some issues with the connection. So I took it upon myself to try to get the thing running and this I did, at the expense of having to disconnect a firewall which to me seems like a worthy sacrifice to have internet access.

My GF's computer does not agree. Mine and her fathers computers are both able to connect however. So why is her PC being a troublemaker? This I do not know but since I disconnected the firewall I thought that I should try to not have her PC connect to specific addresses (I guess that firewalls use specific addresses to make sure your stuff works and other people trying to get at your stuff doesn't? Ramblings of a madman or an IT guy in the making? Take your pick). So I set it to auto and hoped for the best but rather than doing what it did before, which was to display as connected but nothing worked, it instead failed to get an IP.

So my next train of thought was that her PC is one of the few that still connects t... Read more

I have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6965. It's probably about 5 years old I think. It runs Windows Vista 64 bit. Lately I've noticed that when I am either playing a multiplayer game online, trying to download a new game via steam, or playing Civ online multiplayer my computer will randomly disconnect from the wifi. I will be able to stay connected anywhere from 5 - 15 minutes and then it disconnects. I've tried all sorts of fixes. I've tried renewing the ip address, updating the wifi driver, powering on and off, turning firewall on and off, scanning for malware, using ccleaner. Well, some of that was for my PC being very sluggish. I bought the Witcher 2 on steam the other day and still haven't been able to download it. I would really appreciate any help. Windows XP Pro/IE8/Firefox/Google Chrome browsers

I have previously had Adobe Flash Player installed in past years and had not used it very often and uninstalled it. Now I find I have certain websites that require it for viewing content so I have recently installed Adobe Flash Player 16 along with Adobe Shockwave Player 12.1 which I believe is needed as a plug-in? (Both of these are the latest versions!)

I am using 3 browsers primarily because IE8 no longer displayes content on certain websites correctly, so I go to Firefox or Google Chrome on many occasions.(In actuality, both of these browsers load pages much slower than IE8 even though they still are supporting XP?)

My issue is that even with these new Adobe installations, all three browsers will not recognize the existance of Flash and Shockwave on my desktop and each browser asks me to dowload them to their individual browsers. It doesn't seem realistic that I should do this and override the existing installations so I have not tried this on any of the 3 browsers.

Why are the Adobe instillations on my XP not recognized and how can this issue be addressed and resolved?

Thank you for any assistenance!

I followed the instructions posted by tacoman359 (Thank you Tacoman359) but it didn't work. I even restarted my pc and the .cfg is still being associated with notepad.
My os is vista; and I have exactly the same problem and the same reasons as jianming (the first person to post this issue). I even tried a few cmd assoc scripts and still, .cfg "opens with" notepad is still there. I have also tried to disaccoate .cfg from notepad in the other regedit HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT by removing the value data.
Is there anything else I can do to get the default reset back to unkown application?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all. So I have a problem and I'm stumped. I don't know how I did this, but all of my applications try to open with the same app. And when ever I change it, then all the other apps change to as well. Example:

Google Chrome is trying to open with itunes.
So I change Google Chrome so It will open with Google Chrome
Now WorldofWarcraft, Internet explorer, calculator, Utorrent etc are all automatically changed so that they want to open with Google Chrome as well.

And I can't figure out how to separate the programs so they each open with their own respective apps.
Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Answer:application issues. MAJOR issues!

What has probably happened is that you've associated .lnk files with a program. These are their own type of files, used for shortcuts, which by default just say "look over there" to point to the file they represent. They aren't the program, they just point to it. Instead of following the default, you've accidentally instructed the computer to open the links themselves in chrome etc.

The simplest solution is to download the registry fix for link files.
You'll have to unzip the file and then double click to merge into the registry.
Through any prompts, and if necessary reboot your machine. That should get all links working normally.

Finally, the file that you actually have to download is located here:

I don't know the difference between an Application and a Program. Thought the Geektionary would help, but didn't find anything there.

I have 2 Dell Windows XP computers.

If I want to copy something such as Microsoft Money from one pc and install it on the other, what exactly do I need to copy? The application or the program?

And where do I find what I need to copy? :confused

Any help in this area is so appreciated.

Answer:Application vs. Program

Well basically an Application is an executable file such as Notepad.exe whereas a program can contain more than one application along with numerous other files such as DLL files.

Since the days when Windows had a registry it is far more difficult just to copy a program as it often has numerous entries in the registry which will point to locations of files within the program - this is why prgrams these days are generally installed. Only if the program contains a small number of files or is a self contained executable (such as Notepad which is both a program and an application rolleyes) can a program be copied.

Hope that's all clear. :confusedrolleyes

I am using a program called Currports to monitor my ports and internet connections. I use Zonealarm Firewall as my firewall. Currports keeps asking to access the internet, and I keep denying it access because I don't see why this program would need to access the internet. Should I be allowing it to access the internet? Is there a valid reason why this type of program would need to access the internet? Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Answer:Solved: Should Port/Internet Connection monitoring program access internet?

Does not allowing it to access the Internet affect the information it gives you? Are you satisfied with the results? If all is well, I'd say you don't have to allow it. I personally use the program and I have no problem with letting it access the Internet. I have always found Nirsoft to be a trustworthy company. Besides, the program may need to access the Internet or its servers to find all the information it displays.

Ok, I have some issues with Windows 7 security features.

Several of the programs I have, including, World of Warcraft, write configuration to files in the program folder. Windows 7 is preventing these changes. Reconfiguring 14 add-ons and graphics settings, for one thing alone, get's kinda annoying. I have several other programs that need to be able to write to the configuration files, from .DAT to .BIN files and everything in between, and this is a major inconvenience.

Anyone know how to turn off this security on the two folders, "Program Files" and "Program Files(x86)"? I've only noticed it in the x86 folder, but I can only assume that it will also happen in the normal folder.

Hello can anyone please tell is there any back up software that can back up a particular application for me? For example, if there is any update for a software and i want to back up the software before updating it, is there any way to do so? I know i can back up the whole computer using Norton Ghost but what if i just want to back up a particular software?

Answer:Backup program for a particular application

Not generally doable. When programs are installed, they make changes in the registry of the computer and in various parts of the Windows operating system. Simply finding a program that will copy over the files, will not copy the registry changes or any other simply copies files. That is why people who try this run into problems. To date I know of no program that copies applications into a useful format to save. There are migration programs and imaging software etc, but nothing for single applications to my knowledge.

But the worst was the one from Google. I removed online files and upon sync, it removed local files. I had to redo everything.

I have sworn never to use any automatic backup software ever again, manual backups for me, only copy/paste locally or online.

Anyone using this HOT rated download, and will it have a direct or indirect benefit regarding popup or popunder ads? The screen shot looks pretty impressive. I'm already employing CCleaner for the drive.

Answer:CleanCache application/program

This is more of a question for the Software Forum.

Using this or CCleaner is not necesarily going to stop popups? It is not a popup stopper? It's a drive cleaner which will remove some items that could possibly be related to some problems you are having.

Hey guys, I realize that I am not the only person that has encountered this problem, as my research has shown. I tried to ready some similar posts and problems on this forum and others, but I seem to get stuck at certain steps. Here is my situation. Im on a Dell latitude d630 running windows vista. I fell asleep watching Dexter online and when I woke up there was a new looking Anti-Virus program on my task bar that i do not remember installing. The program showed hundreds of infections and was prompting me to delete only if i bought their antivirus. After realizing I could not delete these infections i tried to close the program and open my Malwarebytes Anti Malware and also Synamatec Antivirus. Both programs failed to open, and an error message bubbled off of the "Antivirus" icon. As soon as this happened I tried harder to download new antivirus and to get this off my comp. But no matter what I download, I am unable to install/open. I cannot open task manager, and recently new virus alerts have been popping up. One says i have an infiltration alert about trojans and password stealing attacks, and when I press stay unprotected www.*censored*.com pops up. I tried to fix this going off what you said to others, but I would appreciate a little one on one help to walk me through this, as each case may be different entirely. Thanks a lot!

Hello Everyone,

I've finally had enough. I am sick and tired of using windows control panel to uninstall programs. Why? Because 1/2 the time I use the add/remove programs thing it doesnt uninstall the program completly. It will leave folders, files, registry entries, hidden crap, and who knows what else still on my computer from the program I wanted to uninstall. Then I have to go back and try to delete them manually, then pray that a registry cleaner will find the rest (which usually doesnt happen).

I'm looking for something that will completely remove EVERYTHING when I uninstall a program. I dont care if it costs money or if its free, as long as it works.

Thank you if you can help.

I have a flash application running within a secure site. The program uses resources such as video clips and powerpoint presentations. Video clips work OK, but when I ask it to open a .ppt, a popup window appears briefly and then disappears again.
Popup blocker is disabled, and I don't have google or yahoo toolbars.
It's running in a trusted site with all the settings set to minimum security.
there is nothing wrong with the ppt - it runs perfectly on my pc, and from within my secure site.
And (perhaps crucially) it all works perfectly in Firefox!

This all leads me to conclude that there is a setting in IE7 that is wrong, but I can't for the life of me figure out what.

Can anybody help?
The ppt is one of the Resources within the SCORM-compliant "OCR PE AS level Teaching Support" from Heinemann. This is running as a course within the Fronter VLE. (Just on the off-chance that there is someone with specific knowledge of this!)

Thanks in advance.

Please note this is not the same as UAC in Windows 7. I want to be able to lock down certain programs so that when a user tries to run the program (say Internet Explorer or Microsoft Access) they will be prompted for a password. This would be very handy in a shared user scenario. Is this possible via the group policy editor? Thanks!

Answer:Password protect an application or program

This is not supported by Windows but third party applications may provide this feature. Windows security doesn't work that way.Windows security is based on the users account and the groups it is a member of. This is in the files and folder security properties. Don't change anything here unless you know what you are doing.Note that if the user is using an admin account he can evade any and all restrictions you might impose.

Attempt to uninstall (pre-installed) MS Picture It! Publisher 2001 over most of a day have failed. Removal from registry made no difference. Disk is required for removal. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks in advance

Answer:Clean uninstall of program(application)

I take it you've already tried uninstalling it using add/remove programs. Try deleting all of the data files (C:\Program Files\Whatever it would be it) and then using add/remove programs.

Somehow an application program has arrived on my pc (running XP), with an icon on my desktop. I have deleted the icon but cannot delete the program, I get a msg saying 'access denied'. I can change the name and move it around folders, except to a cd writer! As far as I can tell I have full authorisation. I have run AVG 6 as well as the Pit Stop full test, no problems showed up. Can anyone suggest anything?

Answer:Unable to delete an application program

My family computer is a desktop PC running Windows Vista with McAfee. I make sure to run all updates ASAP. My updates are current through yesterday. When I tried to update my computer this morning, the updates failed with an unknown error. "Error(s) found: code 80070103 Windows Update encountered an unknown error"

This morning, I turned on the computer to find that McAfee has been disabled, Windows Defender has been disabled, and that I cannot turn them back on. Additionally, I cannot run any programs. Invariably, I get the response "program.exe is not a valid Win32 application" regardless of whether I run the program from the C drive or a USB.

Neither Internet Explorer nor Firefox are working; I can only access the internet by opening windows explorer and typing an address into the address bar in that window.

I have tried running McAfee in safe mode, but get the same message. I tried the "repair computer" function when I boot the computer, but it insists that I have another drive attached (though I have unplugged the camera, flash drvie, external hard drive)... There is nothing attached (except for the keyboard and mouse). I have tried restoring my computer to a previous restore point only to be told by the computer that there are no restore points.

I started Googling and thought that it may be the Bagle virus because of the "is not a valid Win32 application" but found none of the files listed on the Removing Bagle Infections page... Read more

Hello, Psychedea

Step 1:

Using BitDefender Online Scan

TrendMicro HouseCall

Step 2:
Make sure that you transfer the tools to the instructed directories given in the R & R Me FIRST
Both SAS & MBAM should be saved to C:\Downloads.. then installed to C:\Program Files
Once installed, open each application and update their definitions databases before running a "Quick scan".

Step 3:
Then re-name MGTools.exe to and see if it will run.

Step 4:
Attach these logs to your reply -
TM Housecall results

Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure and give a description of how things are working now!

I'm troubleshooting a Windows XP (SP2) eMachine (with a fresh OS install on a new hard drive - no original eMachine software remains on the system) and I've never encountered such a persistent problem: certain applications (Fruit Loops, Adobe Acrobat Reader, among others) run fine after installation, but after a reboot they will not run. Their shortcuts, as well as the actual program executables, lose their original icons and are mysteriously changed to the generic window icon (the one Windows will use for a file type is doesn't recognize.) When I try to run these programs, using the desktop shortcut OR the actual executable, I get the error dialog box: "This program is not a valid Win32 application." This happens to several applications, while others (Pro Tools, Acid) remain unaffected and can be executed w/o any problem.
*Note: this computer is not connected to the Internet, so it is unlikely that this is some type of virus.

What could be causing this? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

When logged in to a domain-based workstation under an admin account, if you install a program will this install under all the user accounts? If I recall correctly, I had an application that was installed on one user in the past, but not the others.

Also, what is the best way to install an application for one specific user and not the others?

Whenever installing an application/ program in the past, I always logged on to an admin account and subsequently installed the application. I am just curious if there are other options and if so, how to do it.

Hey guys, I get this error after I close any program ie. Interent Explorer, Winamp, Messenger, Soulseek etc.

I have run adware scans, and nothing. Help would be appreciated. Its annoying hitting OK everytime I close a program...

Answer:Application Error after I close any program?

Well I get the exact same error for IE, Msn, Winamp, everything. The number just changes around a bit. I know for sure this is some kind of virus/adware, but havent been able to find a tool that fixes it.
