Access to files in Safe Mode

Question: Access to files in Safe Mode

I need to access an .exe file when in safe mode. The instructions say to put it on the deskstop, then reboot into safe mode, but that doesn't work. Apparently only installed programs show. I've put the file into folders that show files in safe mode, but the file doesn't show when I boot into safe mode. I put it on a CD, but while the CD drive is recognized, the file doesn't come up.

Running Windows XP Home, SP1 (not my computer)

Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Access to files in Safe Mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dell 2400, Windows xp sp3. An odd file showed up in my documents called My Sharing Folders, when I clicked on it the screen came up blank indicating to me they were hidden, deleted file but it keeps coming back. It's appeared now in My Computer along with others that are also blank. I removed Windows Media Player, Live Messenger, MSN Messenger in add and remove programs. Now I can't access anything in Sysinternals programs. I decided to use the Symantec Dell pc restore and start over, now I can't access anything in safemode, the keyboard locks out and I can't type in dialog box, I run AVG 8.0, Spybot S and D, Malwarebytes finds nothing. Avg picks up malware.generic, malware.Isearch,malware.antispywareshield and malware.newdot, it removes them but thier back the next day, when I could still access hijack this it found a string in Avg called WormRadar.com, couldn't do anything about it started losing control, my control now is limited, this thing must be sleeping to let me type this much. Any input would be helpfull provided I can get back here and read it

As of a couple days ago, I have not been able to connect to most websites. If I do, it's after repeatedly attempting, and even then it may only load half way. Google will load most of the time, as will other low information websites. After doing a little experimenting with streaming media, I found that it will allow a small amount of information in every minute or so. While in safe mode with networking, everything internet based works perfectly fine.
I have run many different scanners (tdsskiller, avast, malwarebytes, ccleaner, adwcleaner, etc), which do find things, but nothing that ends up fixing the issue. I am using windows 7. I am not sure if this is malware or maybe even something that is occurring due to user ignorance. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I have an external drive which I'm trying to reuse as a storage only medium. It's a usb drive on which at one point I managed to install a limited version of windows xp,to run on my first netbook (which I no longer use). I have put other stuff on the drive so I don't want to format it, but there are two files I can't get rid of.They are macromedia flash files. (ocx and exe). I tried taking ownership, running cmd adminstrator, going into safe mode with command prompt, and running admin powershell. I can see the attributes - A and R but I can't change them. I've also tried deleting them via filemenutools delete locked files, but that does not help me either. I want them gone, can anyone help me? I've read one other post where the OP had the same problem, but his problem was solved because his antivirus program eventually decided his file was a virus and got rid of it. So it is possible, but I can't find what to do. I guess it's not a big thing but it bothers me that I'm not able to remove these files no matter what I do. Help would be appreciated...

Answer:access denied when I delete files in safe mode admin

I would just reformat it personally. Start from a clean slate.

After attempting to start my Laptop in Safe Mode, it loaded drivers normally only to crash a few seconds later. A prompt message appears but is impossible to read because Windows immediately reboots upon showing the prompt.

Safe Mode with Networking loads normally.

Any ideas or advice?

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

Lenovo will also come with a trial ware program - cant remember which

Ok, I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but I have looked everywhere.I have a T60 running Windows XP Pro w/ SP3.  About 72 hours ago, I lost the ability to access the internet via my browser (IE7) while running in normal mode.  Works fine in safe mode with networking.  I am connected to a home network using wireless.  Router and modem all check out fine, and have been rebooted.  A 2nd laptop was brought in to verify and worked fine.  T60 will not allow internet access with wired port or wireless port in normal mode.  My desktop computer works fine on same network. The only update I've made recently is the update to the WiFi driver from Lenovo a few days ago.  I've even rolled back to the previous driver and still cannot stay connected to the internet for more than maybe 1 minute in normal mode after bootup and loggging in.I've run every Malware/anti-virus program known to man and have found nothing (Malwarebytes, Spybot, A-Squared, etc.)I've run several Rootkit tools and found nothing.I've disabled, removed and reinstalled my Norton Internet Security software and made no difference.  (same version running on my desktop and working fine.  Same version that has been running on this laptop for months and working fine.)I've done Registry restores (from a backup) and repairs and no change.I've removed and reinstalled IE7.I've run Hijackthis and had the info analyzed, found nothing.I've tried winsock repair tools, "netsh" reset co... Hi all,

I've had this problem since yesterday (5/25/15) and haven't managed to find a fix for it yet. The issue is that although I have internet access--and Google even boots up how it normally would--I am unable to access websites. I am able to search perfectly fine, but the connections "time out" and do not connect. When I decided to troubleshoot, I received "-website name- is online, but network is unable to connect". I am still able to access the internet on my phone and other devices.

Thank you for any and all help!

UPDATE: I now am unable to view the Google homepage on startup with Google Chrome.

hi
my son was on the internet on his IBM Thinkpad when numerous pop ups flashed up on the screen.

since then the program/document files on the c drive were all hidden, and we have been unable to get onto the internet.
i have managed to find the document files, but still no internet, and we are unable to access safe mode, or safe mode with networking.

when you try to go into safemode or safe mode with networking you get message saying a problem has been detected
you then have the option to go to the 3 safe mode types again. however this appears to be a never ending circle of error message, and back to this page!
the computer will start normally

any help will be most appreciated

Everything has been put together correctly, Windows Vista is installed and running, but after I adjusted the screen resolution , the screen blacked out to an error message: "Analogue out of range." Hi guys, nothing on my PC is working I can surf the net via Firefox and that is literally about it.
The windows search bar, while clicking inside doesn't allow me to search so that doesn't work.
When in the start menu and pressing settings the screen comes up as if it wants to load and then the windows disappears.
I CAN access control panel and as soon as I go to 'system restore'it does nothing.
I shift+restart and my 'safe mode'is just a blank blue screen with no settings what so ever!
Malwarebytes brings up nothing.
Windows defender finds nothing.
This is a virus... Or something I just find it ironic how whichever setting I try to access in order to sort this the computer is unresponsive!
This all started the other night when I allowed a friend of mine to plug his mp3 player in to my PC which I have a strong feeling was riddled with virus and malware.
How can I beat this? I cannot lose my stuff.
Please help, I can't give you any information because my PC simply will not perform the tasks, however there are previous threads and topics by me which contain all the info about my PC and spec if you look on my profile.
Any more info please ask!

I have some nasty virus. My computer rebooted after a serious error and after I could not start IE nor could I run virus scan (CA security). I tried several system restore points but each time the computer was not able to restore. I tried to open in safe mode but after using F8 on reboot my arrow keys would not work to select safe mode and the boot continued with normal startup. I went into cmd and selected safe mode startup but once again my arrow keys wouldn't work to select safe mode (or anything other than normal which is highlighted on page). As you can boot into normal mode you can force it to start in Safe Mode by clicking on Start, clicking on Run and type MSCONFIG. Click Ok and go to the Boot.ini tab. Tick the /Safeboot tick box, click the Apply button, click Ok and then choose to restart teh computer. It will then boot to safe mode. Remember that once you've finished being in safe mode you will need to untick the /Safeboot box. HTH

I saw a reference to Adobe in his McAfee licence so I'm guessing it's been bundled with some Adobe product he's downloaded (he into still photography).

I reset IE8 (it had a bunch of toolbars) and internet access is OK now.  However I've tried McAfee, AVG Free and MSE and none will run.

The other thing that concerns me is that I can't access safe mode.  I think (but could be missing something here) there's only one account , Administrator. It has a fairly simple password but doesn't work (and neither does blank) in safe mode.

Help please!

Answer:No AV will run & can't access safe mode

Sorry to reply to my own topic, but I'm concerned there's something dodgy stopping the above computer from working properly.

I worked throught the steps at http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/malware-removal-guide#TOC-Preparation-for-Removal but AdwCleaner won't scan - just sits there doing nothing.

i am working on a dell inspiron 1750 but cant seen to get into safe mode i pressed F8 key but i think i might be another conbination of keys does anyone know how i can get in Safe Mode?

Answer:Cant Access Safe Mode!

Hiya pal, if F8 isn't working for you try this.

Close all open programs
Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
The computer restarts in Safe mode.
Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.

When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

I recently cleaned Backdoor.Trojan from my daughter's notebook. Since Symantec AntiVirus wasn't able to fix the problem (it was found but "Left alone" on the bootup scan), I tried MalwareBytes and then SuperAntispyware which finally removed the offending .dll. After that fix, the only problem after bootup was an error message that the removed .dll could not be found. I ran Hijack This, found the registry entry for the .dll and deleted it. During a normal bootup, there are no more virus warnings or error messages.During all the installs and reboots, I had tried booting into Safe Mode with the intention of going into Regedit to search for references to the .dll file. The Safe Mode desktop came up, complete with Taskbar and program icons. Clicking on the Start button did not open the Start Menu. Double-clicking a shortcut didn't open a program. Right-clicking a shortcut also did nothing. The only thing that worked was Task Manager from which I was able to open a command prompt or reboot. I gave up on Safe Mode and did the fix with SuperAntispyware under a normal bootup. Since the fix, Safe Mode still does not allow access to the Start Menu or programs.I don't know if the Safe Mode failure is a result of the trojan or if it is unrelated. Not sure what to look for in this case, but maybe I missed something during the cleanup. I was recently on this forum working through a issue it was closed.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/506957/computer-very-slow-on-startup/

I was recently following the advice left me at the end of the forum as my computer was acting funny and it kept comming up with virus hits.  I was running a avast virus scan.  Following the scan It was recommended a boot sector scan so I let it do its thing. I had done this before without any issues.  I think this made it worse as now my desktop has been reset and I cannot get anything to run correctly except in safe mode.  I do and did not want run restore as my restore points were corrupted making the situation worse.  I think I may have made it worse by following the advise of advast and am not sure if I am still infected or something else is wrong with my machine.  I am not sure where to go from here and any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Again thanks for every thing.

Hello, I am running xp sp3 on a SATA HD, with Norton 360, and my system would get to the desktop, but then I would not be able to access anything, basically locked-up other than being able to move the mouse. Sometimes it would lock-up after I entered my login password. Sometimes it would show all the shortcut icons on the taskbar, sometimes it wouldn't get that far, just showing the desktop shortcut icons.

This would happen in the past when I would be very low on HD space, and seemingly coinciding with a windows update. This is mere speculation, but every time I would finally get windows running, after numerous restarts, it would never fail that I would have windows updates needing to be installed. However, this time I have plenty of HD space, and I still couldn't get windows running after many, many restarts.

After replacing the hal.dll file through safe mode, and while trying to boot up normally, now there was just a black screen (no cursor) instead of the windows logo loading screen.

After replacing the boot.ini file also through safe mode, I am now not able to access my system through safe mode either. In dos using safe mode, and after it scanning all the drivers, it just restarts every time now.

I brought my HD from home to work, and hooked it up as a secondary HD and I am still able to access the drive fully, accept in the documents and settings folder where I don't have permission.

I tried running sfc on my HD (as a secondary drive here at work), but it says I hav... Read more

I'm working on the family computer running Windows XP SP3 which appears to be horrible bogged down with viruses. So much so that when I simply tried reinstalling avg the next time I rebooted the computer I found myself unable to do anything other than log in. From that point the system freezes.

I've been trying to get into safe mode since then, holding down f5 or f8 at startup brings me to the boot selection screen but if I select anything other than Start Windows Normally it will just restart and bring me back to the same screen. I've also been unable to get into msconfig from windows.

Any tricks to help would be greatly appreciated, I really don't want to do a system restore before I'm at least able to get the files off the hard drive (family pictures, etc.)

first of all, I'm using my Linux OS to access this forum bcuz my windows vista home edition is totally trashed due to the vista antivirus 2012 virus. I can't even get into safe mode. I did get rid of it once using safe mode with command prompt about 3 weeks ago and now it's back with a vengence. So if I'm expected to use a windows .exe file to try a fix, I'm not even sure I can put it on a flash drive from here since I'm not very adept at Linux. So far I haven't been able to use any of the apps that I've downloaded for windows on Linux. I've tried tweaking the settings to accept them but have been unsuccessful.

Hi, hope you can help. My level is now that of a fairly advanced user. A friend had just gone online using broadband - with NO virus checker & NO firewall (aargh!). He phoned, saying his home page had been hijacked by a porn site, and he had suddenly become worried (!). So I went round, managed to delete (through Add/Remove Progs) stuff that was hijacking home page (also checked Internet options). He's using XP Pro. Then I downloaded Sygate personal firewall, then small anti-virus prog from Major Geeks. He wanted Kazaa as well, so got only version I could find (2.1). Then went to Trend pccillin & downloaded trial version, because it's always been fine as far as I've found. HELP! Rebooted. Got to WinXP start page, desktop appeared, Kazaa appeared in Systray (even tho I'd set it not to be launched at startup), pccillin flash screen appeared, then hourglass symbol. Splash screen went down to taskbar. Hourglass over task bar, won't let me access anything at all, anywhere. Cntrl/alt/del won't work. Can't access safe mode booting up - tried F8, F5, Esc, Del. He hasn't got XP disk cos already installed when he bought pc. I feel so embarrassed. Any advice, pls?
Cheers

Answer:can't access safe mode in xp pro

well he should have got the OEM disk even if it came pre-installed.

If your that desperate, try hitting the reset button whilst its booting up. that will give you the boot menu once it restarts. Once you have got in it may be an idea to use system restore, if he had it running.

Hey guys, back with another issue, this time with Windows XP.First off its a HP Pavilion a1240n. Dont know specs right off the bat but heres the issue anyway. Im working on this computer for a friend. Its consumed in malware/spyware (the usual issue I have to fix lol). Im able to log in normally but when I try accessing safe mode, itll get down to mup.dll (i think thats the file name) and itll auto restart. Now heres the odd part. When pressing F8, I selected "Disable Automatic Restart On System Failure", chose the OS (XP Media Center Edition), pressed F8 quickly afterwards before XP loaded for the menu again and chose safe mode. Once that was done, safe mode loaded just fine.I told ya it was odd, didnt I?Now help me figure out why I cant access safe mode the usual way instead of tweaking around to get into it. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Answer:Can't access safe mode :O

For a computer loaded with malware, you need to go here:http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.htmlMeantime, I think you won't be able to follow the instructions there until you can get it bootable. So try a "boot time av cd". Google that phrase and you will see a lot of good choices from Avira and some other trusted sources.

My second PC is a Fujitsu Scaleo P. running XP. Closed down as normal but will not start. It gets to a window which says it was not closed down properly(it was), says to use the up and down arrows to access Safe Mode etc. Trouble is the arrows are not working. Tried a different keyboard but it was no different.Inserted makers recovery disc to try a repair but it is ignored and the PC still goes to the same window and keeps cycling. I can access the boot menu through F11, but can't get any further.Any help very welcome.

As the title suggests, I'm unable to access Safe Mode by pressing F8 on the startup. Instead, an error message is displayed briefly, and the system reboots itself again.

I've had some problems with my PC recently and I'm wondering whether scanning the system in Safe Mode may uncover something I am currently unable to find.

In the last couple of years, we've had some problems with viruses etc. and I'm guessing they may have had some effect on the registry or something, possibly? I've also had a tamper with it myself, deleting certain values while following a guide I found online.

I'd imagine this may be a rather common occurance among many PC users, so I'm hoping to find some other suggestions and ideas for me to try...

Thank you for your help, guys. It's very much appreciated.

A couple of nights ago Windows requested to do some updates. It had 2/3 it automatically picked but I decided to look at the optional updates it recommended but didn't select. I went ahead and asked to install all of them. After restarting and rebooting computer since then my computer hangs/gets stuck on "Starting Windows". It's not a freeze I guess as the logo is still animated whilst booting but I've had it like that for 2 hours without success. I searched the issue up on google and it seems very common after windows updates (never happened to me before however) but every fix/solution suggested seem to vary drastically between HDD Fault/Motherboard dying/You downloaded something naughty etc, etc.

I can't make any progress on many of these "solutions" though. When pushing F8 upon boot and then selecting "Repair my computer" the screen will turn black and I will only be able to see a low quality cursor. The other route to many solutions was via safe mode but that doesn't load either anymore. I booted from safe mode successfully once, restored from a previous point on the 12th of February (maybe the last boot before the updates) and stupidly let windows shutdown and install the same updates again, I think. Since then it also gets stuck loading files.

Running Windows 7 Professional Edition

Any help is appreciated!

Answer:Stuck on "Starting Windows", can't access repair mode or safe mode

Hi there Dougy282,

Do you have your Windows OS CD by any chance? If so, I recommend performing a "REPAIR-INSTALL" and see if that resolves this. You would definitely need your legitimate copy of Windows OS CD though.

Hope everything works out well for you and feel free to ask more questions, thank you.

Hello, my computer, a Lenovo Idea pad P580 running on Windows 7, is 5 weeks old and yesterday I was using Microsoft Word to edit a document and Word suddenly crashed. So I closed it, but then the cursor started spinning and I could not access anything on my computer so I rebooted and it started up but then just trying to open Microsoft Word caused the cursor to keep spinning again and I could not access anything. So I again rebooted and this time it was spinning from the beginning. So I again rebooted and turned it on in safe mode and everything was fine. Then turned it off and left it off overnight. In the morning I tried to boot in normal mode and it did boot but it was again spinning and I could not access anything. So I again rebooted in safe mode and I can use my computer fine. Can someone please help me get my computer up and running again in normal mode?

And also, this is unrelated, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I need to do to make the scroll bar stop moving on its own? Every time I scroll down a page it seems to lock the scroll bar and so when I move the cursor away from the scroll bar, the scroll bar still moves and I cannot click any links or anything on that webpage.

Okay thank you very much for your help!!

Hello everyone,

I've just built my first PC—a task that took me longer than I expected—and I'm having a few problems. Everything has been put together correctly, Windows Vista is installed and running, but after I adjusted the screen resolution, the screen blacked out to an error message: "Analogue out of range." I'm guessing I've adjusted the resolution too high, but I can't figure out a way to readjust it. I've pressed F8 at the login screen, get to the safe boot screen, but can't use the arrow keys on my keyboard to start it. System is Vista Home Prem SP1 running on Dell Desktop. It had a root kit problem and the fixer program removed TDX.SYS. I have copied this file from another Vista system but it does not load and therefore the DHCP Client will not load. System is believed to be clean now but has additional problems: it gives BSOD (8e) in Normal boot mode - runs good in Safe mode.
If I could get Safe Mode with Networking back so that I can actually access the internet, I could more easily download some help for the 8e problem.

OS Specifics: Windows XP Professional SP2Ok, here are my problems.1: Pressing F8 (repeatedly) during reboot does not launch boot menu.  Nor does holding it down during reboot.2: The BOOT.INI tab in MSCONFIG is misssing.  The boot.ini file on my hard drive appears to be fine.  Attempts to restore BOOT.INI tab have so far failed.3: My computer is a laptop, and thus has no floppy drive.  The CD drive is currently broken, so I cannot use the XP CD to access the recovery console and attempt to rebuild my boot.ini (just in case that is the problem).So... with all this... I just cannot get to safe mode.  I have tried downloading recovery console ISOs to install the recovery console locally, but none of the ISOs I have found contain winnt32.exe.  I haven't been able to find what I need anywhere on the 'net so far either, been looking for hours.  If anyone can help me here, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am unable to use safemode with my new motherboard.( Asus A8V) When I hit f8 during startup, I get a screen asking me which drive I want to boot from. IE: floppy, DVDrom, or HDD. Cannot get the safemode screen.

Is this something with the A8V and the via raid drivers I am using? I need to get in safemode because my browser was highjacked. Highjackthis will not work so I have to manually delete a file and clean out the registry.

I have a lab of computers all running Windows XP Pro sp2, hooked up to a domain. Is there a way to restrict safe mode access to only administrators (or only local accounts)? I don't want any of the limited user domain accounts to be able to log onto safe mode, as it allows them to circumvent certain restrictions that I need to have in place.

Is this possible at all, and if not, is there some sort of work around I could use?

Answer:Restricting Safe Mode Access

For this you would need administrative privileges and if these computers are on a network you might not be able to accomplish this but I would suggest contacting the IT department of the company or organization that you work for and have them do the necessary work.

My laptop was working fine then the other day I went to use it and it froze so I rebooted and got this message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

When I was finally able to get to the point where I could choose safemode this is what came up:

Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ntoskrnl.exe
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hal.dll
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\KDCOM.DLL
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\BOOTVID.dll
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\config\system
Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\config\system.alt

Then after a pause it would tell me to use the original disk to repair but that's not working!

I don't know what else to try but my financial files are there and I REALLY need those - don't care about the rest of it. Is there something I will be able to do to regain access? or some other way that the info will be able to be retrieved??

Answer:HELP! Can't access Window XP even in safe mode

The laptops hard drive is probably bad. You will need to have a new drive installed and the OS (operating system) reloaded. Can you do this, or will you need to take the laptop to a repair shop? After the laptop is up and running again, there may be a way to retrive you data on the old drive, by placing the drive in an external USB laptop hard drive enclosure. Backing up those important financial files might be a good idea from now on. Can you recover them from your financial institution?

Hello, everybody. Needing some help here. Recently, there was a blackout at my home and I couldn't shut down my computer correctly. As a measure of security, I always set CHKDSK on the main system Hard Drive after an eventuality of this sort, in order for it to correct any possible corruption. Sometimes, however, instead of showing the blue screen with the CHKDSK procedure as I scheduled, it skips it and instantly boots the system normaly. In the past, when such happened, I entered the Safe Mode and scheduled CHKDSK from there and, usually, it works.

However, today, after the mentioned blackout, I booted-up my computer normally and tried to schedule CHKDSK. However, it skipped the procedure upon the reboot and, so, I tried entering into Safe Mode, but upon trying, the computer hangs-up with only the DOS cursor on the screen and nothing happening. The hard drive led says it IS processing something for a while, but after like 3 minutes, it simply remains there (under normal circumstances it takes a max of 1 or 2 minutes to get to the log-in screen in Safe Mode).

I have used a boot CD to make CHKDSK "externally" to the system Hard Disk and it reported "no errors". I tried restoring the MBR with Windows XP Recovery Console to no avail, and even used the Setup program from the instalation CD with the option Repair Current Windows XP instalation, but the problem remains. Everything else behaves completely normaly.

Any help you can give me before I am for... Read more

Acer aspire 5738z laptop, bought with vista home premium now upgraded with acer windows 7 upgrade disk.
Windows works no problems at the moment but now can not access safe mode.
Boot menu can be accessed by pressing F8 when booting, choose safe mode, drivers list flashes by,mouse cursor appears for a few seconds then it reboots before safe mode opens.
Spoke to Acer who could only keep repeating "use the restore disks" but this would then be Vista not 7 that is installed which defeats the purpose of upgrading.
Thanks for any advice

phil

Answer:Windows 7 can't access safe mode

The first thing that people usually regret when switching from Vista to Win7 is using "upgrade" instead of a clean install. And most of them experience some kind of problems, which usually ends up in reinstalling Win7 with a clean installation, so if nobody else knows why this happens, you always have this option.

Hi, Can somebody please help - A friend's PC is Extreemly slow to logon taking over 15min to display the background and icons. Launching even the Task Manager then takes 3-5mins and even longer to update.

Action Taken to-date: (all executed in *SAFE MODE*)

1. Un-installed numerous suspicious apps (eg 3 copies of Kazaa), re-created the *hosts* files which was blocking access to all AV sites.
2. Using CWShredder, Ad-Aware, SpybotE, Ewido Antimalware and AVG's "vcleaner.exe" I have removed all "extras" from the Start-Up menu, removed 6 viruses and isolated at least 2 "auto-dialers" as well as eliminating a number of wacky non-windows services.

NO CHANGE - machine is still as bad as ever!!!!

3. I have run SpyOnThis and HijackThis to produce some logs but this is off-course in SAFE-MODE so I don't know if they are actually going to help.

Attached are the logs. MH

Have second old computer that is networked to main computer.

Second computer 334MHz 256RAM

2 physical harddrives: C=XP Pro, 18GB D= Win98se, 3GB

[When I want to use Drive D I go into the BIOS and change the boot order.]

Made the mistake of putting GoBack on Drive D - something has gone wrong and now Drive D won't boot - am getting Load Error! message. When I try to disable GoBack I get a message about the MBR being corrupted. Drive C (XP) is still working normally.

I wanted to get into Safe Mode so I could uninstall GoBack (F8) but it doesn't work. Also tried F5 and Cntrl.

So I thought I would re-format D but get an error message: cannot format a network drive.

So I am well and truly stuck.

About a week ago everytime I signed onto the internet the page will appear blank with the word "done" on the bottom. I have comcast cable as my internet provider and windows xp as my operating system. The strange thing is when I go into safe mode I can access the internet, also my daughter has a laptop with a wireless connection that goes through my desktop computer and she has no problems getting on the internet. I have tried everything I can think of, I tried reinstalling the comcast software and a screen will appear stating that my network adapter is not bound to a tcp/ip. It shows me how to fix this by going into internet options and then connections and clicking protocol tcp/ip, but when I get to that point protocol tcp/ip is already checked so I don't know why I'm having the problem. I also have mcafee and it keeps telling me I have the very lince trojan but it can't get rid of it. I'm not sure if that is causing the problem but if it's not I'll deal with that one after the internet thing is fixed. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:can only access the internet in safe mode

Try to see if you can do this in safe mode..
Run McAfee Virus scan and see if it can get rid of it.

Be sure to post the name of the trojan file up here so other's can search for it.

If that doesn't work. Start up normal, see if McAfee will tell you the name of the trojan file. Write the name and path down.
Reboot into safe mode. Go to Start/Run. Type 'msconfig' and enter.
In the new window go to Startup tab. Look for the trojan and uncheck the box for it. Reboot to normal and rerun McAfee scan to see if it can get rid of it. Delete the file manually if McAfee can't find it.
If you don't see the file in msconfig, just do a search for the file and delete it.

Don't forget to post the name.

Good Luck.

Hi.I am glad I stumbled upon this forum and I hope someone could give me precisions or leads about what remains a mystery for me with my X60s.I bought the machine in January 2007 from a second hand PC store in Japan, at that time  she had  no OS.I successfully installed English XP Pro and since then have encountered no problems whatsoever. What I am worried about is that should the need arise to access SAFE Mode it would be impossible as none of the known Function keys open the SAFE Mode panel. During boot I have tried in succession the regular F8, and all remaining F keys, and DEL, to no avail.I have access to the BIOS through F1 or the Blue ThinkVantage button. At a Japanese PC store, and a Japanese support clerk indicated only F8 as key to access SAFE Mode but were at lost to suggest anything else. My BIOS version is 2.09 (7BETC8WW), from 2007.03.14, I could not see an option to allow Safe Mode, if such an option ever exists, and as much as possible I would prefer refraining from upgrading the BIOS, have run into trouble when something went wrong on another machine. I would appreciate ideas and leads as to how to access SAFE Mode.In advance, thank you.

Last week I problems with a number of trojans etc, solved using advice from this site (used tdsskiller). The PC was OK for a couple of days but now I have BSOD and stop error 7E, searched for info on this but advice is mainly to do with drivers and removing any new hardware or software (none have been added for months). Initially I could access safe mode with command prompt only but now I can't access any, also tried last known good config. Booted from XP cd and selected repair which loaded Recovery Console, not really sure how to use this but when I tried some simple commands such as chkdsk and dir I get a message "the volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems". Not sure what to try next should I reinstall XP or is it likely to be a HD failure?
Dell Vostro running XP Pro SP2.

Answer:BSOD can't access Safe Mode

Your error message indicates a problem with either the NTFS file system or the hard drive, IMO.

A problem with either seems likely to result in that error message, since chkdsk /r addresses both.

I would move any valued files from that drive...then run Dell Diagnostics on the hard drive.

Hello friends! I have a problem recently. My System crashed while my Anti-Virus(ESET SMART SECURITY) was being updated. So I restarted the system and after that, I get an error message telling that it stopped working and it fails to uninstall. So I contacted my Anti-Virus company and they gave me a program which will uninstall the Anti-Virus, but I have to access my safe mode to uninstall the program. They also told me that I have to press F8 to access it. I did as they said to me and I selected Safe mode from the options but here is where the problem starts! The drivers load and when it comes to one driver, the computer screen goes black and then it restarts again.....! That's all.......when it restarts, it will then load windows......! The problem is that whenever I access the safe mode, my computer restarts and will not enter safe mode! How can I solve the problem? Please help me. P.S.: I also read many posts in here and I came to know that many are stuck in the continuous reboot of their computer. I don't want my computer to have any problems like that.

Hi

I've just joined this forum, and am really hoping that some kind soul out there will be able to help me!

Ever since yesterday evening, I have only been able to access the internet if I boot into safe mode (with networking support). The weird thing is, if I am NOT in safe mode, I can still access email using Outlook and if I run a ping command from a CMD prompt that also seems fine. But, browsing the internet using IE, Firefox or Netscape does not seem to be possible.

Even trying to open up my Speedtouch router, at http://192.168.1.254/, does not seem to be possible.

I also have Windows vista, on another partition, and access to the internet through this seems to be working without any problems.

I am guessing that I am the victim of some spyware or other malicious software. I have just run Hijackthis, and hope that somebody will be able to decypher it and tell me how to fix the problem!

Thanks in advance,

Ackoman

My PC was juddering playing sound a bit and I thought it had maybe just dropped a driver or something so tried to system restore on monday.

This seems to have been disabled.

Next things really started to go crazy, I could enter desktop for a bit but couldnt run any programs tried to run search and destroy and super anti spyware but it took them so long to run that literally would have taken 4-5 days to complete a run, safe mode was no better. This was the case whether connected to net or not.

now when I try to use either it just goes to user password page which was never enabled and when I try and go through it says Steven_tosh cannot be found (its a toshiba laptop).

dont really know what to do as cant run any programs without either mode?

it will open as far as the bios settings screen or the F8 safe mode screen.

secondly, I have a preinstalled XP operating system, It has the sticker on the bottom of machine with code. but dont have a disk? would anorther XP disc do as long as I enter the proper code?

help!

Answer:cant access Desktop or safe mode :(

I was recently having problems with installing Microsoft Silverlight on my Windows 7 64bit laptop. I followed instructions on several forums which told me to remove the program using comand prompt. I tried doing this but it couldn't find the specific file so i uninstalled it using add remove programs and then decided to restart my laptop. As it was entering the login screen the welcoming music glitched and then it entered the BSOD.I've never had a BSOD on this laptop before and i thought so it was just a once off, it then retarted on its own and entered the BSOD again. So i've tried entering using safe mode and it will still BSOD. I'm stuck in a loop and i was wondering if anyone could help me sort this problem as i need my laptop for uni.
The BSOD error code was 4a5bc184

I have something going on. I can turn my computer on but after the desktop shows and I get ready to open Firefox the BSOD comes up and we go to black if I leave it alone it will restart over and over.

For the past two weeks I have intermittently not been able to connect to my network, even though I had excellent signal strength. Hi, I'm running Windows 7 on my macbook air on Bootcamp. I mostly use the windows OS, as I'm more used to it.

When I was downloading some stuff, I got hit by this page and after googling, I figured it was the trojan ICE ransomware.

Please help.

I've tried to run Kaspersky on the USB but somehow I cannot access the BIOS on the bootup to boot through the thumbdrive.

I tried the notepad method with FARBAR, by running repair tools and accessing the thumbdrive using command prompt but I receive

I thought it might be the 32bit and 64 bit issue, so I ran the FRST64.exe as well. I receive the error
"The subsystem needed to support the image type is not present".

I will be very grateful for any help! Thanks

Hey guys, my graphics card has packed it in so I can only access my desktop in safe mode at the moment. There is a music program I have that I am having trouble opening. When I double click on the program icon the program doesnt open, so if I click on it again an error pops up saying the program is already open. When I open task manager the program does not appear under the application header but it does appear under the processes header. Would anyone have any idea how I can actually get the program to open up? Thanks a lot

Answer:Cant access program in Safe Mode

It sounds like the program is just not designed to run in safe mode.

When running in safe mode Windows loads the minimal amount of generic drivers. In this case it sounds like all drivers\components required by the program are being loaded. There probably is not a work around.

Answer:Safe Mode access does not work

From MSDN :Quote0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

I have been infected with the FBI MoneyPak virus.  I can not access Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking or Safe Mode with Command Prompt.  I tried to use the Last Known Good Configuration but no luck.  Lastly I tried the Repair Your Computer options within Advanced boot Options but it did not list the operating system for me to choose.

Recovering from a worm.win32.netbooster infection.

After deleting numerous registry keys and unregistering dll files per removal instructions, everything seems to be normal.

The only problem remaining is I can't access the net unless I am logged in as administrator or the other user account (which has admin rights), after booting in the safe mode (F8).
IE and Firefox both work.

If I login after a regular restart, there is no internet access using IE or Firefox.

Seems simple to fix but I don't see anything wrong.

Please help!!

Answer:Internet Access When In Safe Mode Only

Hi,
You should not delete any Registry Keys, because any mistake can cause your computer to act abnormal. Can you tell me what were the registry keys you removed and why?

I'm running Windows XP SP2, and have been getting the blue screen of death. I believe it is due to a virus corrupting my display drivers.

I believe I can fix it fairly easily if I can access Safe Mode, but upon pushing F8 during bootup, it only gives me a list of drives to boot from, and no option to access safe mode.

I have multiple computers, and to the best of my knowledge I have never needed to use safe mode on this particular computer, so I have never realised this was the case before. I'm sure it is something simple, can anyone be of help please?

Answer:[SOLVED] Cannot access Safe Mode

hi, generally all pcs have f8 as their safe mode but some companies like a different button . Maybe if you could try f5, or f1, that should definitely work, if not then you will have to do them one by one.

One thing to take into account, is that if the BSOD is severe then safemode cannot fix this because it will need some of the files to load your xp i.e. .sys.

When activating advance boot options, you may want to give Las known good configuration a tap.

I'm having a repeat problem in closing out from Safe Mode in Xp Home Edition. No problem in getting in and using diagnostics in Safe Mode but find that much enlarged size of all data boxes obscure the "Run" box and prevent me from entering the Systems Configuration Utility to exit from Safe Mode !! Click & Drag does not work to uncover the box I need. Have had to resort to System Restore which is the only visible data available on screen but suppose this would negate any diagnostic changes I've made while in Safe Mode ? Guess I'm missing something obvious but help is much appreciated for this relative newbie ?? Thanks.

Answer:Unable To Re-access "run" Box From Safe Mode In Xp

You can't change the resoultion in safe mode because you are not using
your regular video driver, and resolution info is stored in the
registry based upon the video card/driver being used. Safe Mode uses
a 16-it VGA driver.

You can try this and see if it will work on XP.

Hit the Alt key, RELEASE the Alt-Key (Alt-Space together also works), and then press the down
arrow. You are presented with a menu of Close or Move. Simply press
the Enter key. Notice that the mouse pointer jumps to the middle of
the title bar and is now a four headed arrow. At this point you can
move the window around with the cursor keys. Just click the mouse or
hit enter to put the cursor back to normal.

Hi guys,

Bit of a pickle here, wondering if anyone is able to help.

I'm running a Sony Vaio N11H laptop on Windows XP, and I use Firefox as my web browser. A few weeks ago I realised that the only browser that would load web pages is Firefox. Flock wouldn't work, neither would IE, neither would Opera. This wasn't too much of a problem as I use Firefox as my primary browser, but now Firefox isn't working either. Whenever I try to load pages I get the usual 'page cannot be displayed, check your connection' gumph. I'm using a wireless, locked network which is fine for my 3 other flatmates, so I know it can't be that. Also I am still able to access instant messengers such as MSN and AIM!

I tried running my computer in safe mode, and sure enough every single browser lets me connect to the internet. Obviously I don't want to be running my computer in safe mode all the time, though, so does anyone had any idea what could be going on here?

Thanks very much for your help in advance!

- Michelle

I have a HP Pavilion dv2000 running Vista Business. For reasons I can't explain I cannot boot normally. When I attempt to I see the graph that appears above Microsoft Corporation and the six or so lines moving left to right. Then very quickly I see a BSOD. So quickly I cannot read it. I then see a Windows Recovery screen. I choose to perform repairs and it starts to boot again with the same results.
When I attempt to access Safe Mode I get to a blank screen where I can move the cursor but it never goes further. I have left it on overnight and I see the same screen in the morning.
Any troubleshooting tips to get my laptop working again will be appreciated.

Answer:Not able to boot normally or access safe mode

It sounds what your problem is, is called a loop. I had this problem with my old computer. I tried everything under the sun, and it didn't work. The only thing that worked was taking it to Best Buy, and they repaired the "loose connection" that I had. So, my advice:

1) Take it to Best Buy for repairs.

2) Or, format your computer, and see if that helps. It might not, if it is a "loose connection". Or a virus that has affected your motherboard, and formating your CPU might not help it either. So, truthfully, go with advice #1 and see if they can help you. It might be a bit costly $150.00+, but I think that it is worth it to not see your computer loop all day long and never get past those annoing screens. I hope someone more experienced comes long before you do either of these actually. This might be a simple problem, but I wouldn't know it. Like I have in my signature, I don't know too much about computer. But, where I know the solution to a problem, I help as much as I can.

Win 8 Pro..I am trying to fix an error that is causing my desktop to randomlly reboot.

I wanted to run chkdsk from safe mode, however, tapping f8 doesn't work for me.

Tried to restore a backup and paragon merged all the drives into one file and says the structure is different and I may lose data.

Win 8 will not let me stop chkdsk with any key press. Kind of stumped what to do next. TIA

Answer:Can't access Safe Mode or run chkdsk

Hi, I'm running XP Home, SP2, on a Maxdata computer. Without adding new hard or software this problem arrived. I fire up the PC and the XP screen with progress bar appears briefly followed by "sorry windows didn't start normally, please choose an option below" message. The keyboard is unresponsive so I can't select safe mode or any other option. Pressing F8 on starting does not produce the advanced start options page. The keyboard works on another computer and I have tried a known good keyboard in the PS2 port and another known good USB keyboard. Cannot boot from the Windows CD as the first message is "press any key to continue..." and the keyboard is unresponsive.I have a bootable Linux Puppy disc and the keyboard works with that but I am not familiar with Linux so I don't know where to go from there. Would be grateful for any help with this.

Answer:Can't boot or access safe mode

1.  Maxdata Computer.  First time I've heard of Maxtdata, although Wikipedia says they were pretty big in Europe.  Went out of business last year?  Which one do you have:     o  Desktop, notebook, or laptop?     o  Model name and/or number identifier     o  Approximate year it was made     o  Make, model number, and speed of processor, if known     o  Working CD drive?  Bootable?     o  Working floppy drive?   Bootable?     o  Working USB ports?  Bootable?2.  CMOS Setup.  Does it permit you to enter the CMOS setup utility of the system BIOS?  Does keyboard work within CMOS setup?  Which one - PS/2 or USB?3.  Diagnostic CDs.  Do you have capability to download and burn diagnostic CDs if necessary?4.  Windows Advanced Options menu.  Have you successfully accessed this menu in the past from the F8 function key?

hello,
I've been having this problem of not being able to access the internet in normal mode since last friday (june 5)
I was using the internet and all of a sudden i noticed that my McAfee had shut down and after i left firefox, i was no longer able to access the internet. (not even internet explorer)

I believe I have a trojan virus since my Windows Firewall noted that i have one of those viruses the next day and automatically restarted my computer in order to protect me from it.

I have contacted McAfee since i thought it was their system that was causing the problem. the people at McAfee told me uninstall the program and reinstall it. However, since I can only access the internet on safe mode, I am unable to reinstall the security system.

I've been looking at forums like these to see if they can help me out, but I understand the every situation is different. And I was really confused looking at the information since I am not that knowledgeable about viruses and computers.

If you could help me out with my problem since I am a college student and I have finals coming up soon. In addition, I need to by plane tickets to go back home. And I don't want to risk buying tickets online while i have issues with my computer and no security system to protect my computer.
