Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

Question: Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

I reinstalled Windows XP. For some reason, all of my old programs show up in Windows Explorer, but not in the Start Menu or in Control Panel/Add Remove Programs. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks for any help.

Preferred Solution: Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Programs Not Listed in Start Menu Or Add/Remove Programs

Hey, i assume when you re-installed XP you attempted to keep your programs?

When re-installing XP i believe the registry is re-written, which would account for them being missing from the Add/Remove programs panel.

As for the start menu, star menu entries can be found in these two directories:

Code:
C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Start Menu
C:/Documents and Settings/[Your Username]/Start Menu
i'm assuming they've been re-written too, if the programs still run then all you need to do is drag a shortcut to the main EXE into one of them folders, if they don't i suggest you re-install them.

Could you clarify how you re-installed XP? did you choose some non-destructive re-install(in order to keep your programs)?

Cheers,
Jamey

I have a lot of programs installed and have my own toolbars to access them. Seeing all those programs on the Programs list of the start menu is distracting. All I really want is the folders that house subprograms. The only option offered is to uninstall but not to remove from the list. My guess is the registry but where to look?

Well, that's new - the normal request is 'how do I add things to the Start?'

No, not in the registry. There are actually two folders that are combined to make that list: one for All Users and a personal one for each user. You can customise both. This Tutorial tells you how.

When I go to the Change or Remove Programs Button of the Add-Remove Programs window in the Control Panel, there are no programs listed at all. The window is totally blank. The list for the Currently Installed Programs is completely empty. Does anyone know how I can get my installed programs displayed so that I can delete a couple? Any reason why this would happen?

Hello you really nice people. Since you have helped me on several occasions, I thought I'd try one more time.

I don't know exactly when it happened; however, at some point after I installed winXP as a dual boot and have been trying out some dvd burning software, I cannot add/remove programs in win2000... it states that "no programs are currently installed on this computer."

I have tried spybot (which found a few things and have been repaired)... I have tried Norton PC Doctor (which found a few things, all of which could not necessarily be repaired) and as a last resort I downloaded a freeware program Add/Remove Programs to get my program uninstalled.

In the midst of all this, I foolishly installed service pack 4 and then had to promptly uninstall it (I think it was a conflict with my video capture card -- got the blue screen of death at reboot [even in safe mode!!]). I was able to uninstall that because I had the good sense to back up and let it give me the uninstall option.

Any other ideas ??? I am going blind trying to follow the msn knowledge base suggestions checking the registry...

I don't know what information you need from me to try and help me out, so if you need any logs or stuff that I see other people post, please let me know how to capture that information for you as well... I'm pretty computer smart, just not really troubleshooting experienced... in other words, I just build em and learn as I go along.

I'm bumping this up... I still have found no solutions... I've run Norton PC Doctor and WinDoctor... spybot... housecalls... I've reinstalled 2000 to repair and still no luck....

Someone out there has to know how to resolve this stupid error. I just know it's something simple that I don't know about... or as I always say... it's just something stupid... it almost always is.

Help please???????????

Hello, can anybody tell me how to delete program entries from a specific user start menu?

PC's have multiple user accounts, for designers and administrators within the business. Designers do not need access to Sage Accounts so I want to remove it from their start menus and administrators do not need access to dreamweaver and thus I want to remove it from their start menu.

When I right click on the item in a user start menu, it deletes the item from all user users start menu!

How can I overcome this problem?

Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Remove Programs from user start menu

If I understand correctly, you can right click and pin to start menu. Once pinned it should be there for individual accounts and not be changed.

Bottom line, pin it to start menus that you want.

In another post someone asked the question: How to permanently remove/ban programs from the Start Menu Recent List? (Since manually deleting them will only get them back on once the program is started again.) The sole answer gave a suggestion to "switch the feature off". This answer though useful to some is not to me. Those programs which are indeed often used are on the desktop via a shortcut. Those on the start menu, are programs not often used or perhaps only used this week, then not used for 2 months, then used again later once. Therefore, as the reader suggested, to then, after turning the feature off and"add links to the programs you do want there manually" doesn't do it since I may not want them there 'next week' nor do I like the idea of me having to manually add them and manually remove them all the time. In Windows XP there used to be a little Microsoft program called TweakUI (Power Toys) that would do exactly that--controlled which programs could go there and which could not. Considering that TweakUi was originally made for the 1st or 2nd Windows version (before Windows 95) I hesitate to use it again for Windows 7. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Answer:How to permanently remove programs from the Start Menu

You may find this Microsoft Answers forum thread interesting. One possible solution was:

Quote:
Click the Start button , Control Panel, Personalization, and then Taskbar and Start Menu. Click the Start Menu tab and uncheck the boxes under the Privacy section.

If you do want certain programs to show up on your Start Menu, just right-click on them and choose 'Pin to Start Menu'

Then a Microsoft MVP forum moderator added:

Quote:
This is more of a sledgehammer procedure, since it disables the recent items on the entire system, including the Start Menu and Taskbar Jumplists.

Titles kind of explains it. I can't right click or move any of the shortcuts in the All Programs Menu. I have searched on the internet and have found nothing useful. Another poster on these forums also posted the same problem (http://www.techsupportforum.com/f10/...ap-113131.html), but I couldn't perform the suggested fix because I don't have the 'Enable dragging and dropping'. I don't believe I can do system restore because this is an old problem that I have neglected for a while since this isn't my main computer. This computer has had problems (virus/malware/spyware/etc) that I had to salvage it from because my family doesn't know how to use internet safely.

I am running XP Home Service Pack 2.
Thank you for any help that could be given.

My start menu will not let me right-click any link such as "Computer" and it will not let me remove any program from the start list. Again, because it wont let me right-click it.

Answer:Start menu not letting me right click or remove programs?

This is normally due to a setting in the Start Menu that's called "Enable context menus and dragging and dropping". Here's what to do:
Right-click a neutral place on the Start Menu (or just right-click the Start Menu orb) and choose "Properties"
Click the button labeled "Customize..."
Scroll down just a little bit to find "Enable context menus and dragging and dropping"
Click this setting to enable it
Click OK
Click OK
After this, you should be able to right-click. If this option was already enabled, then we'll go from there and try to figure it out.

Hello guys. wish you all have a good day.

1. Yesterday my friend did something to my system (although he denies it) resulting a corrupted system folder. I tried to repair it using window's recovery console but it didn't help much.

2. So I reinstalled windows xp on the same drive and folder (overwrite). Resulting a great 'lost' of previous profile settings.

3. I managed to restore 'My documents' files from the previous user account folder (Documents and Settings/USER) to a new account folder (Documents and Settings/USER.ZAKI) and redirect the link of My Documents to the old one (C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents).

4. THE PROBLEMS are, most of my previous installed softwares are not properly functioning now. Mostly give an error stating "blabla not properly installed". And also, all that previously installed softwares are not listed in the Add/Remove Programs!

5. What I want to know are,
i) Is there a way to reset the system and re-guide it to use the previous account setting to the state before it was reinstalled (USER)? I want the Add/Remove to recognize all the previous installed programs.
ii) How to properly redirect the 'Start Menu' to list down the programs list of 'All User'? Mine are now almost empty making it looks like no program is being installed.

Please help me. Hope my post can help others having the same problem as me to gather what they need to know (it's hard t... Read more

After receiving a false message concerning hard drive failure I found a program titled, "Windows XP Restore" in my start menu and also that most of the programs were no longer available from the start menu. I followed the procedure in the "Remove Windows Recovery" guide, including RKill, Malwarebytes, and Unhide. After Unhide the folders reappearedin the start menu, but they were either empty or programs were missing. I have backed up a friends data and used the dreaded red floppy to restore to factory settings. The Packard Bell software appeared to do this successfully and I then set about trying to remove various programs from add/remove. Virtually nothing was listed! For example Adobe Reader 5 is installed and working on the computer but doesn`t appear nor is it listed in All Programs. As basically all the preinstalled software. (Power DVD is listed in All Programmes but again not in Add/Remove)I`ve googled but can`t seem to find a clue - it sounds like a registry problem. Anyone experienced this before?

Answer:Add/Remove Programs Not Listed

The Add & Remove data is located in the registry & as you have reverted back to factory setting the registry no longer contains information regarding the programs that were installed after factory default. You could try re-installing the programs you want to remove & hopefully you should then be able to remove them.

I downloaded and ran HighjackThis once and noticed that it is now listed in my Add/Remove Programs List. Why is this? I thought it didn't actually install anything on your computer?

(I originally had it in a folder on my desktop, I think that's where it was when I ran it, then I moved it to the Programs Folder on C:, then I moved it back to my desktop. Not that any of that would matter...)

On a side note, I also ran that Startup program, and that didn't add anything to my Add/Remove Programs List...

Any help is appreciated -- thanks!

Answer:Why Is Hijackthis Listed In My Add/remove Programs?

Hello,

Not sure what your problem is though..
Hijackthis is listed in your add/remove programs because when you start Hijackthis the first time, it looks where Hijackthis is located and puts an entry in the Uninstall entry in your Registry.

Hijackthis does indeed add some registry entries when you run it, so using add/remove deletes the entries from the registry.

The startup program doesn't add anything to the registry as far as I know.

Answer:There are only a few programs listed in add/remove prog

Also make sure you are logged in as administrator. If you use (preferred) normal user for daily use and many of the programs were installed as administrator or before you started using a limited user account, they may not show up unless you are logged in as administrator. Also when you look for restore options, not that you should have a 'button' to "Show More Restore Points". If you do, then you will be able to see all of your restore points.By default your system should reserve 12% of your disk space for your restore points. Less than 8% (unless you have a very large disk) is not generally recommended. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Every time (19 out of 20) I have to push Start\All Programs\ program...

Can All Programs appear first and Recent Programs second?
Can Recent programs menu be deleted to put All Programs first?

eg Start\Program...

I have searched everywhere for a solution.

Can anyone help with this please.

Thanks.

Answer:Start menu with All Programs first and Recent programs second

Not that I know of, but I know that there are ways to make it easier to start the program. My favorite way is by pinning it to the Taskbar or even to the Start Menu. The first 10 items on the Taskbar starting from the left are accessible by pressing Windows Key + 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. all the way up to 0. Pressing Windows Key + 0 accesses the 10th item. The rest can be given Shortcut Keys.

Another is by simply opening the Start Menu, typing the name of the program (or even just the first few letters), and then pressing Enter - or using the arrow keys to select it first if necessary.

Another way is to make it so that as soon as your mouse cursor touches All Programs, it's the same as clicking it. I'm talking about a 0ms menu delay for the mouse which is done in the Registry.

All,

I tried a new program to format an external harddisk, swissknife. As a result, I managed to change the file system of de D-drive from FAT32 or NTFS to RAW (?). In addition, in the C-drive some start-up files were changed and I couldnt boot windows. The last problem is solved, the D-drive is permanently damaged but thats not the question here.

After this my "Start Menu > All Programs" only contains a few programs and my previous list is gone. Most links to programs and tools are missing. I read about similar problems in XP which seem to be registry related but I dont know what to change. Attached a screenshot of the program menu that pops up which is pretty empty. Used programs are stored in the start-menu.

Any advise? Many thanks

Koen

A friend is having problems with IE 5 and I directed her to Add/Remove Programs so she could repair it. However, IE is not listed in the list of programs. I got her to do a search to try and locate it and it is in C:\Windows.

Is this unusual? Mine is located in Program Files and of course is listed in the Add/Remove Programs list.

I am going to uninstall it for her and install IE5.5 from a CD but I was wondering why her original version is not listed in Add/Remove programs.

Okay,
I was having major problems with XP so i decided to do a dirty install. So I reinstalled, keeping all of the other data on my hdd. But when I got windows back up and running, I still had all the programs in the Program Files Folder, and they could run, but all the shortcuts on the desktop, the start menu, and the add/remove programs are gone.

I understand why this happened, but I haden't even thought about it before reinstalling.

I checked around and even resorted to Microsoft's site and their resolution was: Revert to backup of shortcuts....lmao

Well, all help is appreciated and thanks in advance,

well as the title says, im cleaning up a friends computer and he's got TONS of games and programs he doesnt use anymore, but, the thing is, they're not listed in the start-programs or the add/remove program in control panel.
But when i check the c:\program files drive...whoaaa...tons of folders...what's the best way to remove these programs? just delete the folders and hunt them down in regedit? thanks in advance guys....

Answer:removing programs not listed in add/remove -control panel

well when i delete games in add/remove program it almost always leaves folders half-empty so it would be better if you removed them manually including the desktop chortcuts.

the add/remove program is for people who don't understand windows.

I found Snap Do on my computer last night. I've read many "fixes" for it and they all say to start by uninstalling the program. It isn't listed in my Control Panel / Add Remove Programs.
I downloaded SypwareHunter as it seemed to imply that it would find the program. After installing, scanning, rebooting (all that was required), there's still no sign of it--instead it brings me to a page where they want $29.99 to fix it. I don't know about anyone else, but when a program says free and has you do all that work and then hit you up for $, I get angry and refuse to purchase their product. Same thing happened with SparkTrust.
Has anyone else run into this problem--it not showing up in the add/remove programs? I know it's on the computer as the homepage was hi-jacked and Spyware Hunter showed 28 threats all to do with this program.
Another question--there's hardly nothing on this computer--do you think a reformat will take care of this? At first, the hi-jacking didn't bother me, but the more I read, the more malicious I find this to be and I want to get rid of it. I've also heard some proggies U pay for don't work.
Any help would be appreciated...Sue

Hi.Can anyone tell me how I can remove a program from the list when you click Start / All Programs list on one user account but not on any other? If I remove a program it seems to remove it from all accounts on the computer. There are three accounts on my PC running Windows XP Home. Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Remove programs from Start/All Programs list

You can copy the program you want to have under a particular account to the Start Menu folder for those accounts and delete it from the Start Menu folder of All Users.Click on My Computer and look in C:\Documents and Settings\ and you will see a number of folders. One will be called All Users and there will be three others for the accounts you have set up. Open folder \All Users\Start Menu\ and look for the program you want to move. It may be in folder Programs or even in a named folder in here. Cut the program and copy into the appropriate \Start Menu\ folder for your account.Hope that helps.

My wife was on the computer while I was at work, and doesn't remember what she did, but all of the icons except for the recycle bin are gone from the desktop. When I go to Start>All Programs, there are NO programs listed, and when I try to send something from a program to the desktop(make a shortcut) that option is not available...the only option avialable is to send it to my DVD drive.

It began when I was browsing and out-of-the-blue a popup saying "HDD Failure - etc. etc. We recommend you restart your machine" came up, it looked legit so I checked out my PC to see some desktop items (not all) had dissappeared. Naturally I restarted machine and went on my normal user;

- my desktop was completely black and their were no icons, their were only a few programs listed in all programs aswell.

- A program called "Windows XP Fix" was running, it was obviously false software, I managed to delete its root (i think) from All Users / Application Data / 01032483.exe (or something)

- A program called browser+ was in my All Programs which it let me uninstall.

- If i go to a different user there's desktop icons and i can use my browser (still limited All Programs though) but if i click on a link it sends me to different web pages like canadasasquach.com or matalan.com (lol?) it's really messed :/)

Stuff is attached I appreciate your help <3

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2.

I have a situation where a program shows on "All Programs" but not in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs in Explorer. How can I see that shortcut or whatever in Explorer?

Also, on C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs there appear items (files, shortcuts, whatever) of the same name. What's going on here?

Thanks,

Some (3, out of maybe 20) of my installed Programs, all working perfectly well, are not listed in Control Panel -> Programs and Features.

Any ideas on how to rectify this, please?

Thank you.

Answer:Some installed Programs not listed in Programs and Features...

Some programs do not really "Install" by using normal installation process by writing entries in the Registry and so don't show up as uninstallable. "Portable programs" are an example. If they don't have Uninstall.exe (or similar file) in it's folder, you can just delete folder and shortcut.

So I have the Classic Shell start menu replacement program (fantastic by the way), and it just occurred to me. Is it possible to have a menu on the right pane, instead of adding a scroll arrow on the bottom when there's too many items to fit on a screen, behave like the All Programs menu and automatically throw the other items into a second column? Answer:Can't See Any Programs On Add/remove Program Menu.

Hello Jazzeh and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.Having no programs or a partial listing in the Add/Remove list is a common problem with XP. It can be caused by a few different things like a corrupted or missing registry key or a corrupted Control Panel applet that shows the list. Just moved to Windows 7.

We're told over and over that the new start menu is better in every conceivable way, but the truth is, for a keyboard oriented power user like me, it truly sucks. At least, the default setup, and all the customizations I've attempted, truly suck swamp water.

In XP, I configured all my programs to be accessible in 3 keypresses. Eg. by putting Notepad under Start > Tools > Notepad, I could bring it up in a split second by pressing Windows Key, T, N - likewise for the ~20 other programs I have. I've had this for 8 years and it's ingrained in my style, but more importantly, it is genuinely highly efficient.

I've tried my darndest in W7 to recreate this. However several things are in the way:

1) After the windows key, the Search box has the focus. So no matter what you type in, it isn't shortcutting through the programs menu, it's typing in a search query.

2) I can't seem to create my own top level menus under the start menu (like "tools", "office" etc).

3) The All Programs link doesn't open up a menu with sub menus etc - just lists them in a single list. Maybe typical users prefer this (fair enough) but it's brain damagingly irritating for a power user, as you lose all sense of hierarchy and location.

Can anyone suggest how I could recreate my old XP behavior in W7?

Answer:Add custom menu to Start > Programs menu

Hi,

If I read you correctly you can navigate to:

C:\Users\"Computer name"\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Create a new folder in the folder named Programs and it will appear in Start> All programs

See ive created a folder called "Boo" and my "computer name" is scotty:

   Note
AppData maybe hidden, if so go to control panel, icons view and locate Folder Options. Once opened
click the view tab and click Show hidden files, folders, or drives.

Hope this helps?

Myself & others have been looking into the possibility of adding Uninstall Program to the context menu when right clicking items on the desktop. This will run the selected applications uninstall program without having to use control panel.

Below you will find links to 'Uninstall_app.reg' & 'Remove_uninstall_app.reg' which will add new keys to the registry which will run the 'Uninstall a program' control panel app to the centext menu.

Registry keys added are:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\Uninstall]
@="Uninstall Programs"
"NoWorkingDirectory"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\Uninstall\command]
@="rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL appwiz.cpl"

Currently this will only add Uninstall Programs to the context menu and will run the 'Add/Remove programs' application. As of yet it will not uninstall the selected application but that is a work in progress.

If any1 has any ideas then the help would be great.

I have xp home. I use word perfect 12. I installed word perfect 8 today just to see if it would help me open some files that wouldn't open in 12 (it didn't work.) Now I want to uninstall word perfect 8, but it is not listed in add/remove programs and I can't find an uninstall feature anywhere, whether on the wp program or on xp....how do I get rid of it?

Answer:Solved: How do I remove program not listed in "programs"?

Look in the directory that WP 8.0 is installed in. Sort by file type and look for an uninstall.exe or something along those lines.

The screenshot will show what I mean. When I click on All programs, a list appears (shortened) and when I click on a choice (i.e. Accessories/System Tools) it tells me it is empty.

Here's the link to the screenshot:

I don't know how to fix this, and all references I have found seem to relate to upgrades from Vista to windows7.

I have windows home premium 64 bit.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jean

Answer:Start up menu all programs gone

Hello Jean, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may be able to fix it for you.

If not, then the tutorial below will help you to restore the default Windows 7 shortcuts in the Start Menu. As far as the other shortcuts for installed programs or the ones you added, you will need to manually create new shortcuts in the Start Menu from their exe files.

Start Menu All Programs in Windows 7 - Restore Default Shortcuts

To help make sure that your system is clean of malware, I would recommend to do a thorough scan with a antivirus program, and with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free.

Hope this helps,

I am running xp Home OS. I use the sytem in my shop and do install and uninstall a lot of programs. After the unnstall I make sure the program is gone from the start menu. My problem is that when I install a new program it will show on the start menu as there are to many programs and many will not show even in three columns and go off screen.
My question is thee any way to reduce the column size or the font to allow a larger display of programs. I have had to make a link to the progrmas folder on the desktop and access from there.

Hi, when I open my start menu and go onto programmes, the list expands bigger than the screen and I cant see all the programes. Can I match simular programs into file then open that to save space on menu???

Answer:2 many programs on start menu

if you right click the start button, select explore from the popup menu, it'll take you to your start menu folder. Then open your programs folder and create group icons for example Internet Utils, Windows Utils etc and move the program shorcuts into your preferred folders which will keep the menu from scrolling off the desktop

Not all the programs I have installed appear on the start menu (all apps).

Even if I right click the relevant exe file (from file explorer) and select pin to start menu it does not appear.

If I select pin to taskbar that works!

Hi, regarding the first point, Win 10's start menu does not express the traditional start menu folder structure usefully or reliably. Strange, isn't it?

Try Classic Shell (free). You can still launch win 10's menu with a key combination, and launch the universal apps from both.

CS. gives you choices- a Win 7 -like start menu, a menu that cascades across the screen, expanding control menu etc. You can even (I have) have a Win 7 Orb as your start button if you get the images.

With XP, I click start, (not in classic view). I want to add my videos to the list next to my music. Does anyone have a clue? I included a screen shot of the startmenu. As you can see I already modified the list on the upper left, But how do I modify the other list on the right?

Answer:How can I add programs to my start menu?

This seems to be a common question just from google searching. I don't think there is a solution to your problem unless you change the Properties of My Documents to a Menu Item. You can create a shortcut to it on the Left Side. There doesn't seem to be a way to get it on the right side.

Answer:start, menu, programs

What do you mean? The shortcuts in the "Start->All Programs" menu for XP? (or for any other version of Windows "Start->Programs")If so, just open up the following directory in XP:c:\Documents and Settings->All Users->Start Menu->ProgramsI can't remember the directory for other Windows operating systems though.

Hi,

I have a lot on my computer, and just added another program. But when I go from start menu to All Programs, I have so much that not all the programs show. Is there a way to see "the next page" so to speak, so I can find and run this program?

Thanks, for your help.

Answer:How do I see ALL the programs from the start menu?

Hi Bryon,

Try this:

- Right click the Start button and choose Properties
- In the Start Menu tab click Customize
- On the Advanced tab uncheck Scroll Programs in the Start Menu Items list (near the bottom of that list)
- Click OK, Apply, OK

You should now be able to view All Programs in multiple columns.

While on the Advanced tab you might like to make sure 'Highlight newly installed programs' is checked - I find that very useful when trying to find a new program in a long list.

I can not get often used programs to show any icons. It is enabled and is set to 6 I have tried to clear the list and set it to different number of icons to show. No icons will apper here no matter how often I use them.
Can this be fixed without a reinstall?

Answer:Start Menu: often used programs

Run regedit and see if you have this restriction enabled:

User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]
Name: NoStartMenuMFUprogramsList
Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value: (0 = default, 1 = enable restriction)

A friend of mine recently copied all of the folders in his C:/Program Files directory and saved them while he reformatted his HD.

After it was all done he copied back all the folders to the same directory but he can't see the program names on the start menu.

I have no idea what he should do to be able to add them back properly. Anyone have any ideas? Or maybe it can't be done?

Thanks.

Answer:Can't see programs on Start Menu

Chances are that many, if not most, of the programs installed in the Program Files folder will not work after being transferred in this way. None of the registry entries for those programs exist any longer, and all accessory files installed in Windows, Application Data, or system folders are lost.

But for those that will still work, a shortcut for each program must be made from the executable file in the program folder (exe) and then dragged to the Start Menu manually.

In the "All Programs" section of the start menu, I have so many programs they are cut off on the right side of the screen. I have searched around for a fix and I know that you can set it to scroll but it's annoying having to wait for it to scroll to the bottom. I could set the resolution higher but the screen gets hard to read. Is there some kind of easier fix for this? (If only you could scroll them with the mousewheel like you can with firefox's bookmark menu)
I also don't want to organize any of the items into folders or anything, they are set up just how I like them.

I'm running XP Pro SP1 on a Dell 450 MHz machine, 576 MB memory, 40 GB System CD. I recently had to reinstall XP, and a lot of the listings in "Start Menu -- All Programs" disappeared. How does one put entries into that list? Also, I no longer have desktop links to My Computer, Network Stuff, C, and My Documents. Easy enough to get around by manually creating shortcuts, but a bit curious.

Answer:Start Menu -- All Programs

If you reinstalled the operating system then you need to reinstall all your programs before they will show up under All Programs. Also, get SP2. You're asking for trouble using SP1.

I had an issue with iTunes where the icon wouldn't show up on the .exe or its shortcuts. I tried to manually change the icon, but it said it couldn't find iTunesIco.exe in the install folder, so I reinstalled. Now when I try to pin it to the start menu, it pins as iTunes (2). I try to change its name through the General tab in properties, and it offers to change the name to iTunes (3) because iTunes is already in use. I don't see it on the start menu, so I'm not sure what the issue could be. I tried reinstalling again, still no success. Any ideas?

EDIT: After browsing the Microsoft help forums, I have discovered a solution. I decided I would keep this for the sake of helping anyone who stumbles upon a similar problem in the future. The solution I found was to navigate to %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu and manually delete the shortcut, then pin the program to the start menu. Hope this helps!

I'm confused. If you're dealing with a shortcut, then the common way to change its icon is by checking its properties and clicking on "change icon". I don't understand what a file like iTunesIco.exe has to do with this.

I am running XP Home edition, when I click the start menu, all programs appear but I can't see the name of programs on the right side of the screen. How do I change the view so that all programs will be readable? Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:Start menu, can't see all programs

Not sure what you mean by can't see ones on the right. Could you post a screenshot to show us what you mean?

You may want to try having your programs scroll instead.

Right click your Start Button > select properties > select cutomize.

If you are usin the normal Start Menu (not classic) > click on the Advanced tab
Under Start menu items you should see an option for Scroll Programs

If you are using the Classic Start menu you should see an option for Scroll programs under the Advanced start menu options

Sunday afternoon (around 4:30 p.m.) an accident cause the power to go off for several blocks including my house, shutting off my computer. Then late Sunday night (after midnight) my best friend used my computer to type something and check her email (I was asleep). Monday morning (around 9:00a.m.) my computer suddenly shut itself off. When I tried to re-boot, I got a message asking which mode diid I want to start in. My choices were: 1-normal, 2-safe mode with networking or 3-safe mode [something I dont remember], Regardless of my choice I was taken to the same message over and over again, unable to re-boot. Using a new windows xp professional disc I tried to boot, when that wouldn't work, I tried to re-install windows. It took several tries before the set up began. During the install/setup I was notified of several files missing. Finally I got re-booted and then proceeded to installing my drivers and other software for various programs. When I click on the start menu, the left side of the window is blacked out and when I click on start > programs nothing happens. None of the programs I added were there. Nor was there accessories or games, etc. I was able to install aol and firefox but for some reason I cannot access the Internet with Internet Explorer. So at the time I can go online and check my email or play games but I cannot type a simple document or add any content to my web site via Frontpage. I tried to update windows and several of the updates were unsuccessfu... Read more
