Dell deleted all docs on my hard disk ! HELP !

Question: Dell deleted all docs on my hard disk ! HELP !

Dell deleted all the docs on my hard disk by mistake. Also, they don't want to take responsability & won't help me recuperate my files. Can anyone advise me on how I can recuperate my docs, I know there is software that one can use but have tried a few & no docs seems retrievable though as i saw some come up in a previsualisation form...

Thanks for any advice, help you can give me...

Preferred Solution: Dell deleted all docs on my hard disk ! HELP !

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

and welcome to the Forum

I hope you have not been using the pc since the format . . the more you use it the lower your chances of data recover are.

Try GetDataBack . . it has a pretty good track record.

Hi. My computer's picked up a trojan virus. I had one about a year ago and people were very helpful about it on here. But this one seems to be a lot more disruptive and i'm not sure how many helpful details i'm going to be able to give you. At the moment, i can't even run a scan on the system or provide any error logs as the whole hard drive seems to have been wiped out by something claiming to be 'windows xp recovery', who want to charge me a premium for them to 'fix' the problem. Except i'm pretty sure everything's still there really as when i tried to run a scan - which eventually got disrupted - it was still going through all my normal files. I can only guess this virus has essentially hidden my real hard drive and want money to bring it back, under the guise of 'fixing' a problem it has in fact created? It reminds me of the mob asking for protection money! Anyway, like i say, the information i can give you is scant, but the error messages are telling me- there's a problem with the 'ide/sata hard disks', that there's a 'bad sector on the hard drive which may cause data corruption and loss, hard drive inaccessability, system errors and failures' and that 'windows was unable to save the file \\system32\\496a8300'. I have combofix installed from the last time this happened, but it looks empty! I'm not sure i can get onto the web to download anything. And i can boot up windows recovery mode, but not sure what best to do with it. Does anyone have any advice, or is it time to i... Read more

Answer:trojan virus 'appears' to have deleted whole hard drive, docs and program files

Hello mrbaggins.

No need to format, and you will be able to download and run the necessary tools.

Do not jump straight to running ComboFix. I need to see a preliminary set of logs in order to determine whether or not to deploy ComboFix. As explained in Post 2 of our pre-posting topic...

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.

Please do not run it until I advise you. First, I need more information. Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here and post the requested logs.

NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help

Those 2 tools (dds.scr and gmer.exe) can be downloaded and run from a flash drive if necessary. If you cannot see flash drive via My Computer or Windows Explorer, open Task Manager (press Ctrl Alt Del keys) Click File>New Task (Run...) and use the Browse button to locate the flash drive.

I cannot see why they should be there, as my backups are on an external hard disk. Am I right or perhaps missing something? I'm wondering how they got there too!

Answer:Picture and Docs folders on Dell Win7 installation disk

On some later Dell's they added a second partition on the hard drive for user data such as documents, pictures, etc. Thus when you install with the disc, along with installing the OS it will create the extra partition for user data. Or have an option to install the user data partition as the idea behind that is, if you have to reinstall the OS you won't lose your user data.

I think there is an option in the Dell PC Restore (recovery partition) accessed by F8 at power on for this, too.

Its been a couple of years since I worked on a Dell or the Dell forum so I'm "assuming" this is what is going on.

What's the best way, if any, to safely erase wordpad documents from an old computer. I know that just running the old restore disc doesn't do that. Somebody who knows what they're doing could still hack into those old files on her hard disk. My sister wants to sell her old XP computer, but I told her she should either just recycle it/destroy it (safest way) ...... or we should try to erase any confidential info on it first! The first thing I've tried doing is simply writing over those files and saving them with the same file name, hoping this will destroy any prior information on the hard disk and thus make any old info unretreivable. But I'm still not 100% certain! Is there any software (Disk Sanitizer?) that might help?

This is the easiest but before proceeding backup the drivers folder which you need later. If you tend to consider OKR it will be a different situation and would require time and caution.

After recently installing a copy of Norton Utilities I tried the Unerase facility of the programme and was very surprised to see a couple of thousand text files appear. These files were numbered numerically and when I unerased some of them and read the contents I found that besides the computer coding on them (squares, dots etc) they seemed to contain details of all my computer activities and sites that I had visited on the Internet. The Internet details seemed in some cases to show the text that may have been written on some of the Web Pages I had visited. I run 12Ghosts Wash programme which seems effective but for some reason the files that are on my hard drive are not being shredded when I run this program.
I would be grateful for any information on what these files are and what action that can be taken (if any) to stop them occurring.

Many thanks

My Dell N5050 laptop died and I tried moving the Harddisk into a old HP Deskpro. The disk boots fine but Windows 7 DELL OEM reboots as the windows picture comes up. It then allows me to do a repair but that doesn't help. The repair report doesn't give any clue to the problem.

I am guessing it is some fundamental driver that is Dell specific. Any idea how to sort it ?

The repair will allow me to get to a dos prompt.

Welcome to our forum auror1968.

Their is a excellent chance that the OEM/SLP key, drivers and a lot more are tied to the Laptop and will not work on the Desktop.
Does you Desktop or Laptop have a Windows 7 sticker on it that looks something like this?

ok recently i formated my 1TB hard drive and then went to a friends place where i could then get some program files back. It then said i had to format it again which took 4hrs to do 6% so we thought this is taking way too long.

So we canceled it, right clicked on the drive and went delete volume.

now the drive comes ONLY in devies. In computer management it only shows up as Disk 1 with a grey box next to it with no options associated with it it is literaly just an outline. includes no info about the drive.

we have tried uninstalling the drive - non successful
well to be honest thats the only real option it gives us to do now

What i wan to do is get the drive back to becing recognised in disk management so that i can allocate it again and put my files back on it

please help.

Did you try rebooting and importing foreign drive in disk management. What happens when you right click on the partition on that drive? What shows up on the list?

I have three internal hard drive
C: (Windows 7 x64 & Software)
E: (only photoshop picture)
F: (only music, video, company files based on my years of work)

Since the time I install windows 7,
There was always problem when saving or trying to delete a file.
Like photoshop was saying to me 'can't save the file because of admisnistrator permission'. So i needed to recreate a new files each time.

I tried on hard drive E: folder to right click and remove the 'read only' case and that have helped for the photoshop saving problem.

but all the other mini bug that tell me : can't save file because of admisnistrator permission, kept going...
So i search on google how to become the administrator and have total control over my files. this is the website I follow instruction from :
How to Get Full Administrator Rights in Windows 7 | Web Talk

But I removed some user names in the permission and do not know how to add them or resolve this problem.

Now i can't completely access my E: drive AT ALL, neither C: drive at all
It write : E:/ Is not accessible Access is denied

Here is a picture of my screen and what I see :
Did I lost years of works or just can't access it ??
How do I access it??

Answer:Hard disk - Admistrator, permission problem??? YEARS OF WORKS DELETED?

Sounds like it would be worth the price of this program:

O&O Software - O&O DiskRecovery 6 Hard Disk Recovery Software

I used it to recover a lot of GBs of video on a defective drive, and was very happy with it.

EDIT: Rereading, I'm not certain that this would solve the permissions problem or not, so wait for someone else to chime in, before shelling out any money.

I accidentally deleted the 100MB reserved partition while reinstalling win 7 which got stuck and when I restarted, I got 'Bootmgr Missing' error. I have Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop. Now, my BIOS doesn't detect my hard disk and I also don't see any hard disk while reinstalling win7 via bootable USB drive.

Is it that 100mb partition contained the required drivers? If yes, how could I fix this?

Please help !

Answer:Deleted 100MB reserved partition - BIOS doesn't detect Hard Disk

There are no drivers stored on the SR partition.
The 100 MB System Reserved partition has nothing to do with the bios seeing the hard drive or the Windows 7 installer seeing the hard drive.

For the past 2 weeks, something keeps on deleting all files under my documents leaving nothing but empty folders. There are like 15 different folders under my documents and periodically all files get deleted however the folders remain as they are. Fortunately I have a disc back up utility and I can get my data back however this thing is going on and on. I saved all my documents under some other folder name managed to save them from getting deleted periodically. I kept the empty folder structure under my documents and every now and then drop in some file under my documents to see if it will be deleted again and it does sooner or later. The document types are not specific, it could be word, excel, ppt, txt, picture files, they all get deleted. I ran full norton av, hjt, spybot and ad-aware and cleaned everything they find but this still goes on. It is simply unbeliavable. Can anyone tell me what is going on?

I need some help with Combofix.

Its deleted all of my docs, userprofile and files from the systems32 folder

Ive tried system restore but it didnt fix it..

What do I need to provided to get things back?

Answer:Combofix - Deleted Desktop, docs, programs etc

Sorry didnt have enough time earlier to fully explain whats happened.

It all started when my PC was infected with win32.patched and a couple of other viruses

I tried to remove then using AVG but AVG kept reporting that its own exe "avggui.exe" was infected.

I tried Malwarebytes, Spybot and spyware doctor.

None of these seemed to clean the system and so I downloaded Avast.

Avast found the viruses in the memory and after a boot time scanned came back clean....

It then reported I had a infection in firefox which kept forwarding me to

After googling this a forum said "Combofix" would sort this out and so I downloaded it to my desktop, disabled avast and then set it off....

It took HOURS for the scan to complete and then after the PC rebooted I logged back into my profile to find the desktop was blank and all of my documents and programs where missing....

In a panic I restored the PC back to the last restore point but all it fixed was the missing icons on my desktop but still no documents or programs.

I am also unable to open firefox and any other exe.

I have found the backup files that combofix made under Qoobox but am unsure how I go about restoring things back?

If someone could help me out that would be really great.

Thanks in advance.

Help Please... Combofix has deleted/quarantined the entire user profile folder contents inc desktop & my docs data.
Yesterday (4th Feb 2015 @ approx 17:00hrs GMT) we ran combofix on a suspected infected computer. It had AVG cloudcare, we disabled the realtime scanner until restart. We then downloaded combofix direct from bleepingcomputer.
Combofix run, did its normal stuff, then we noticed it was DELETING what we have found to be EVERYTHING in the users c:\users\%username%\ folder to the point when the computer rebooted, it re-created the appdata folders, etc, etc like a new user was logging into a new PC.
There is a URL that might help here, but its quite old and it was for WinXP. Does anyone know if the same can be run for Win7? And more importantly has anyone had this same experience recently!!!???
It might just be that this computer is heavily infected and all the profile files are genuinely infected with something. I am fully aware that bleepingcomputer recommend backing up before running this, but I've used this 50-100 times at least, and never ever had this happen. We are also aware that the deleted files are put in C:\QooBox\(the original path)\ and have the extension .vir added to the file name and original file extension. Before anything, I'd recommend you to upload a few of the deleted files to so we can have a look if they were infected or not.It would also be helpful if you could zip up and attach c:\combofix.txtAs for precautions, its clearly stated you should run Combofix only under expert guidance, if you choose not to do that then you risk problems like the one you are describing unfortunately.

Hi, I've got a problem where combofix deleted alot of personal data and hopefully an expert can help.

Computer was infected with one of the many rogue antiviruses, which cleaned off nicely with combination of Malwarebytes, Avira, spybot and Microsoft Securitiy essentials. But there was a strange Google redirect causing all search result links were redirected to other websites.

I know I should have asked before running combofix, but I've run it in the past without issues. Now I understand why I should have an expert helping with combo fix. I ran it and it fixed the Google result redirect problem, but it deleted almost all of the documents, pictures, music and god knows what else. I noticed a directory on the root hard drive, found the data was place there with a .vir extension on it.

Question is, how do I get that data back?

Thank you very much!!

Answer:Combofix Deleted all Personal Files - docs, pics, music, desktop, etc

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Yes this is a recent bug that just appeared with ComboFix.

Get the C:\QooBox\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt and attach it here so we can attempt to work up a fix to restore everything. We will need to use ComboFix to restore everything so we will have to restore it to since this bug has deleted ComboFix.exe from the Desktop too (or from whereever it was run).

We have already fixed several PCs where this problem has occurred.

Do not attempt to restore anything on your own. Make no more changes to your PC. Just get us the De-Quarantine file so we can make a fix. Also get the ComboFix.exe file out of the Quarantine and back onto your Desktop. If you don't know how to get this file back on to your Desktop, just tell us.

I can connect a single hard disk to any of the five SATA ports and it works fine; however, if I connect more than one hard disk, the disk IDs show in the BIOS but not in Windows disk management or in Windows Explorer. The only disk that shows in Windows is the one that is connected to the SATA port with the lowest number.

Example: I connect a disk to SATA-2 and -4. Only the disk connected to SATA-2 is recognized in Windows disk management or Explorer.

I can't find a manual that even mentions how to deal with multiple hard disks -- or any hard disks for that matter.

One day it boots and doesn't see the D:. No prior SMART errors, no warnings, just no D:
Windows tools don't see the disk.I uninstall recent windows updates.I update drivers recommended from Dell site to no avail
I boot into BIOS and can't see the disk.I try swapping the data cable for the DVDI try swapping powercable
No dice - but when the PC boots I can feel the disk vibrating as if its powering up.I boot into the Dell Diagnostic tool, run all diagnostics and it does see the disk.
I reboot and everything is fine. My D: is back. I'm baffled and relieved. For a week. Someone reboots and then D: is gone. I run diagnostics again and now it doesn't see the disk.

What does this mean?
Should I buy replacement SATA cables?
A replacement disk?

I have a Dell XPS410 desktop that got a virus. I was having trouble cleaning it, and I'd been planning to put in a new hard drive anyway, so I got a new Seagate 3500320AS (500 gig, SATA).

I took out the old (infected) drive and put in the new drive, but it kept freezing during Windows XP installation using the Dell reinstall disks (Windows XP Home, SP 2).

Not being sure what was going on, and worried about the virus, I had a friend (on a different system) partition the drive and install XP Professional SP2, which he did without problems.

Putting the drive back into the Dell, it started to boot, but never finished. It would either hang or take me back to setup.

Here's what I tried and results:

* Found new BIOS for the XPS on the dell site, flashed the BIOS (no effect).
* Took out memory boards (4) one at a time and rebooted to see if one of them was bad
* Changed the SATA Controller from the DELL default of "RAID ON" to "RAID AUTODETECT / ATA." With this change the system boots, but hangs during operation (anywhere from 1 minute to 30 minutes or more into a session).
* Tried to reinstall Windows, but the seagate instructions say to hit F6 to load drivers. WHen I do that, the Dell installer will only look to drive A (my floppy) for drivers. I cannot find anywhere to download or extract driver files to put them on a 3.5 floppy.

I'm stuck, and frustrated, so I welcome ideas how to get this system back up.

There are a number of BootCDs you could use. A good favorite of many is The Ultimate BootCD

Yes backup to USB flash, then install Xp clean (removing the partition when asked in the initial setup process)

Note, you do not need to create a new partition or even format the drive, as Windows setup will automatically create an NTFS formatted file system, on a non-partitioned drive, during Windows install.

Answer:Cannot find driver for new hard disk Dell Laptop

If the mboard's bios Setup is NOT detecting the hard drive.....Some hard drives in older laptops have a gender adapter that's plugged into the pins on the original drive that must be removed and installed on the replacement drive. That's obvious because on the new drive you can see the pins, on the old drive it doesn't look the same because of the gender adapter. If the mboard's bios Setup IS detecting the hard drive, but your problem is the computer is not detecting a bootable hard drive, new hard drives (or used hard drives that have had their data deleted) have no data on them and cannot be seen by the bios as bootable (having had an operating system installed on them). That problem will go away after you have installed Windows on the drive from the Vista DVD, or after you have installed the contents of the Recovery disks for the specific model. If the bios Setup IS detecting the hard drive but the initial files loaded from the Windows DVD, or from the Recovery disk set for your specific model, are NOT detecting it...If the drive is SATA......This is about XP - it has no SATA drive controller drivers built into it.Similar applies to Vista - it has some SATA drive controller drivers built into it, but not all possible SATA drive controller drivers. You can provide the SATA drive controller drivers to Vista on other media other than a floppy disk, such as a flash drive, or you can set the SATA drive controller mode to an IDE compatible mode in the bios. Press f5 to run on board diagnostics. I pressed f5 and error code 2000-0413 lcd cable not detected came up. I have taken out my hard drive and placed it back in and this still does not help.

Answer:Hard disk drive not found Dell N3050

Try putting the drive in an external caddy and connect to another machine or open a desktop machine and connect the drive direct to a spare sata port to see if it can be rcognised.

I have a gx280 system, It won't boot up about 1 out of 3 times. The reason is not to find a hard disk. The messege shows me " No SATA hard drive". Whenever the computer failed to be booted up, I opened the case and replug the HDD cable in. It clears the problem so far. Also I replaced the HDD cable either but it still has the problem. The dell assistance in online say that the problem could be the cable or mothboard. I don't know what I should do now. Should I buy a new board or throw this Dell away? Or anyone has a solution for this?

Answer:Dell GX280: Won't find the primary hard disk?

That motherboard has a lot of trouble with bad capacitors which render the system to be now workable. If your capacitors (little barrel-like components about 1 to 1 2/4 inches high) are puffy, have rounded tops, or are leaking brown, black, or rust colored powered, the board is dead unless you have a tech nearby who knows how to replace them cheaply... about $60.

Otherwise, replace the cables with the SATA cables with the locking plugs and sockets... very cheap...

So again Dell is right, but not helpful.

I had a hard disk crash on an old Dell D610 laptop. I purchased a used (guaranteed) replacement 80gb drive from a company in Hong Kong but my Dell diagnostics does not recognize it. How can I create a bootable CD on another computer that can possibly see it and format it. I tried DBAN to wipe it but DBAN also doesn't see the drive. Any other suggestions?

Answer:Dell diagnostics does not recognize replacment hard disk

Hello,Make sure that the drive is recognized in BIOS. The drive should be recognized even if it's not formatted. If it's not seen in BIOS, it doesn't exist as far as the computer is concerned. 1.) Turn on (or restart) your computer. 2.) When the DELL? logo appears, press <F2> immediately. If still not seen, remove and reseat the hard drive. Make sure you didn't damage any pins. Does it "plug in" securely? Some laptop hard drives require an adapter. If yours does, it would be on your old hard drive. If BIOS doesn't see it, chances are the drive is bad. If this is the case, you could slave it to a desktop system (using the appropriate adapter) to see if it spins and is recognized on a different system.

Hello !
I have bought a new Dell Precision 5510 and I switched it on, then i heard some noise from its hard disk continuously. I dont have any idea that what is the reason of this sound. I also run the diagnostic but it did not detect the hard disk noise issue or anything. If someone could explain that why there is a noise in its hard disk.

I am planning to buy New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000. I would want to replace the harddisk with SSD by next year or so. But i wanted to know if i can have SSD along with hard disk in this laptop.
I wanted both good performance along with large storage. So i was wondering if i can have two disks at once.
Thanks in advance

Answer:Can i have SSD along with hard disk in New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000

mSATA and mini-PCI express have the same form factor but are electrically different.   It doesn't look like any of the newer Inspiron 7000 series models have mSATA connectors -- the older 3rd generation ones did, though.
If you want an SSD along with a hard drive, you'll need to consider  an XPS system - not an Inspiron.

My P.C has started giving an error. "No internal hard disk found". Press F1 to restart F2 to run setup utility F5 to run PSA.When I go to setup utility there sometimes it shows the fixed HDD, and sometimes there is written "None"...When I ran diagnostics, initially it did not give any error about hard disk. But now today diagnostic showed a message that "Hard disk not attached". I have to restart again and again to reach operating system.
Operating system also gave the error thrice "Your P.c have some issues" today the Stop code was Memory management.
What could be the problem....??

Answer:Dell Inspiron 15, Hard disk related issue.

It appears that the HDD (hard disk drive) could be intermittently failing. If you are in the operating system now, you should start saving your data (documents, MP3, pictures, etc.) to a USB HDD. We will need your exact model number to know what HDDs can be installed.

Hi Guys,

Last week I found my Laptop was hanging/lagging as soon as i get my Desktop screen. At first i thought it should be a Virus problem, but i had latest Kaspersky Internet security software. When i ran it, laptop freezes. Booted the laptop in safe mode and tried uninstalling few memory consuming programs, still no luck.

Ran Dell memory test and found a problem with Hard disk. I had 4 partitions(c:\ is primary where OS is installed). I formatted the C:\ drive and tried re-installing Windows Vista, but it was an failure, I tried this more than 10 times in different ways.

I had second thought to connect this Hard Disk to another computer as secondary drive and to move data to other drive. So I bought a new Hard Drive and Installed vista on it and it works fine.

I bought 2.5" Hard Disk connector and connected to laptop. It showed as Mass storage device connected, but when i went to "My Computer" I could not see the any other drives except the new drive.

I went to Disk Management and found the crashed drive and it showed as "Unallocated"

I seeked help of an expert but he said it will very expensive (>3500$) which is not affordable. I need an help. I have helped many of them in this forum to resolve their issues, lemme see if someone can help me on this.

I have a Dell XPS 15 9530 and I'm getting this message when I try to boot it up:
internal hard disk drive not found
to resolve this issue, try reseat the drive
No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 enter setup Menu, F5 enter PSA.
The drive shows up in the setup menu under mSATA. I have ran all the test in the ePSA Pre-boot System assessment. All the test pass, including the Hard Drive 0 test. Has mentioned in the message I have tried reseating my drive, with no success unfortunately.
I do not know what else to do.

Answer:Dell XPS 15 - internal hard disk not found message when booting

Do you have a single, mSATA drive, or an mSATA drive (32G, usually), plus a 2.5" hard drive?
If you have the 32+hard drive setup, it sounds like the hard drive has failed -- you'll need to replace that and reload everything (the OS is stored on the hard drive - the mSATA drive is just a cache).

I have a dell inspirion 9100 and I just recently installed a new dvd-ram drive because the old dvd-rw died...
I have a pioneer dvr-k16 and when I boot up it stalls for like 30 seconds now and then flashes "secondary hard disk drive 0 not found". Windows starts up like normal and my drive works, although I've only watched movies so far and haven't tried burning anything. How do I get the error message to go away? I've tried going into setup and that doesn't seem to help anything because I don't know what to do in there. I keep reading on other threads that you have to change the slave to cs or something like that but I have no clue as to how to do any of that or if that would even alleviate my situation. Maybe just a dirty computer? I do have two cats and I have fur balls floating all over the place that I can't seem to get rid of...that's a whole seperate issue of course. HELP?

Answer:secondary hard disk drive 0 not found on a dell laptop what do I do?

The bios in your laptop was set up to use your old drive, the specs on your new drive will be different.

First off, have a look at the drive you took out to see if it was set to master, slave, or cable select. To do this, have a look at the back end of the drive near the connector for the jumper setting, then make sure your new drive is set the same.

Then you need to go into the bios and look for any options to scan for hard drives (this will scan for optical drives too). You need to make sure its set to your new drive and not your old one.

If you don't know how to do any of this the your manual will help, if you don't have it you can probably download one from dell.

If you still have problems then let me know and i will do my best to help further.

100 GB hard drive worked well. One day - it stopped.
"Primary hard disk drive 0 not found
No bootable devices..."

No disks in BIOS are shown now

Same story couple months before that was with another 80GB harddisk.
Several files on drive C (FAT) though were corrupted (CHKDSK corrected that)

"Fun" is:
1) Harddisk works fine if placed into desktop PC, no problems with any diagnostics
2) laptop works fine with small size old 4 GB harddrive

Harddrive connector problem???? BIOS problem with nonstandard size harddisks (DELL sold this notebook only with 60 GB max). Old not supported firmware ?

Dell Customer Support after several diagnoistics by phone only suggested to buy ane more disk and check. But I afraid that most probably it will not work

Secondary hard disk drive 0,1 not not found at bootup[dell pc]

hi guys this happened to me a few months back.
this morning i tried everything...nothing works,....well this is what happen.
--everytime i reboot i get
;"secondary hard disk drive 0 not found"
;"secondary hard disk drive 1 not found"
if i press F1 it works normally, also i can see the drives listed at my computer labeled correctly,if i turn off pc ,and then, turn on pc everything is ok.,,but at every reboot i have this black screen booting problm.
myp is a dell dimension 8200,xp pro/sp3 768 rdram.
-in device manager everything looks correct..

Answer:Secondary hard disk drive 0,1 not not found at bootup[dell pc]

Sounds like you have an option in your BIOS to 'halt at everything.' Meaning if there is anything missing or possibly wrong with the system your BIOS will stop making the user press F1 so that they notice was is wrong (or possibly wrong).

If nothing is wrong with the system then just choose the option of 'halt on nothing' or something similar in your BIOS.

I read most of the posts on this subject and found no answers.
I get this error with both the system hard drive and replacing it with a known working hard drive from another Dell system.
I tried loading default values, trying HDD0-3, SATA-1, tried both Legacy and UEFI, tried disabling RAID, also replaced HD cable.
The Bios will recognize the drives, but both Dell diagnostics and a Windows install cd give the error: no hard drive detected, or disk controller not supported.

Anything else I should try?
Thank you for your feedback :)

I have been going bonkers looking for some help to do this, then I recalled out that I can call dell to get the restore disk, -  I was told NO you can not get the disks, because Windows XP is no longer supported.
I have Windows XP sp 2, I know it needs updated, but I also know the computer is riddled with virus and malware.  I would rather make the restore disks from the hidden partition and then reformat the computer.
I would like to make the disks, but have no clue as to how.
I then plan to partition the 150gb hard drive so I have Windows XP on one partition and then the other I want to install Ubuntu, I have no clue about Ubuntu - other then I have heard it is open source and a very good program.
P.S why both OS?
I know XP well, and want to learn Ubuntu, I expect I will go back and forth between them as I learn.

Answer:Wanting to create a Hard drive restore disk from hidden files on a dell

I do not know of a way to make recovery CD / DVD media from the recovery partition.
The best recovery method (provided your recovery partition is intact is to perform the following...
Make a Backup of all your important data first.
Disconnect any unneeded peripherals (Printers, Scanners, USB Drives etc.).
Boot your computer, when the Dell logo appears on your screen, hold down <Ctrl> and <F11> simultaneously.
The Dell PC Restore Wizard will load.
Use the <Tab> and <Enter> key or Click to choose Restore.
Read and follow the instructions carefully, use the <Tab> and <Enter> key or Click to respond to prompts.
Finally All Data Will Be Lost displays. use the <Tab> and <Enter> key or Click to choose Confirm.
Press <Enter> to begin the recovery process.
Upon completion you will receive a message hopefully displaying a successful recovery. use the <Tab> and <Enter> key or Click to choose Finish
Press <Enter> to boot to the fresh installation.
I recommend that you consider Linux Mint
Keep BC posted!

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Vista Home Premium factory installed and now I need to install Windows 7. Before doing that I want to make sure I can restore my computer exactly to the way it came if anything goes wrong in the process of installing Win 7 or I needed back my original laptop with Vista.

Figured out the best way to create a complete image of my Hard drive.

Capacity is 320GB
4 partitions - System Partition (C), Recovery Partition, some other 2 small partitions.
I have to modify these partitions and sizes when installing Win7. I want to completely image this HDD so I can get these back exactly the way they are now.

What is the best software I can use and what are the best methods? Please give me your opinions and instructions. Thanks.

Answer:Creating full Image of Hard disk System & recovery partitions (Dell)

(1) Download Macrium Reflect (Free)
(2) Create an image with all 4 partitions selected
(3) Make the linux recovery boot CD
(4) Make sure the linux boot CD works and can locate the image you just made and shows the 4 partitions for selection. Exit.

If the linux boot CD fails to work as will happen on some system configurations you can try in place of the linux CD:
(1) Hirens Boot CD Macrium Reflect is part of the mini XP environment
(2) Macrium pe recovery disk. To make this you will need to download the Macrium Reflect V5 trial and be prepared to do a large MS download of WAIK (~1GB). Macrium guides you through the quite straightforward process.

Hi, Recently the Tech guy at my work threw out a bunch of computer towers and other computer parts etc..In amongst all of that was a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 with no battery or AC adapter. So I took it home and plugged in an AC adapter that met the specs. It powered up and says the following: SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 2
Warning: Immediately back-up you data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent. Press F1 to continue.I press F1 and it Starts Windows. It then goes to a screen stating Windows Error Recovery. Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. Then they give you 2 options. Launch Startup Repair (recommended) or Start Windows Normally. I tried both of these without much luck. During the Startup Repair it says Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically. Well I know that the problem is obviously the hard drive is corrupt. I will need to replace the hard drive. I have tried to click F8 a ton of times during boot up and it won't get me to that option. I have tried plugging in an external cd/dvd drive and boot from the cd. It cannot get the mini 1012 to boot up that way. I changed the boot sequence to boot up from cd drive first. I don't understand why the F8 function won't work. Also during the System Recovery option I got it to a screen stating: To access recovery options, log on as a local user. Graphics card NVidia Geforce GTX 1050 Ti
Screen resolution 3840 x 2160

Answer:New DELL Inspiron 15 7000 denies to shrink windows installation hard disk drive

It sounds like you might have a 7567 Gaming system.  If so, Windows will shrink a partition if it can. I would not recommend using a third party utility to shrink it since problems could happen and you might lose the system.
If you need another partition, you should have an option to place a 2.5 inch drive in the system for that.

My company's computer needs to be patitioned and reformat. The system is still working well. I mean, nothing wrong with anything (weird huh?). Ok the hard disk just need to be 'split'. I mean, make drive C & D on the hard disk. I know how to do that... easy... Then the HD need to be formatted & reinstall windows XP. Ok, easy too..

But the main problem occured before I do anything (partition & format). I have my own bootable CD that I usually use for partitioning & formatting.

Ok, i insert the CD & restart.
I went to BIOS & changed the boot order (1st boot: CD-ROM, 2nd: HDD-0 & 3rd: Floppy). Then restart again.
Ok the bootable CD is excellently loaded.
I typed fdisk, then came the first problem. it says something like 'no fixed disk'. I exit fdisk.
Then I typed format c:, 2nd problem occured. it says something like, 'invalid drive'.
I forgot the error message because the pc is in my office right now. I'm currently at home 'begging for help' So the error message is not accurate. sorry..

I think, if I run the CD, the hard disk will not be loaded (or should I say, hard disk failure). & If I take off the CD & restart again, change the BIOS (1st boot: HDD-0) then windows will load! Weird right?

I don't think my CD is 'corrupted' nor broken because I tried to run the CD from another PC. Yes, I can access the C drive from that PC.

Hello. Download this Win8.1 IDT audio driver for the Inspiron 14z 5423. There are two versions there -- get the one that says "File Format Hard Drive". Follow the installation instructions and see if the driver shows up in Device Manager.
If it doesn't, perform the PSA or ePSA sound test. If no sound during the test then there has been hardware failure. Could have happened during parts replacement.

I recently bought a new Dell PC with Vista and Word 2007, along with a Dell AIO 926 printer. I have full page documents that I made on my old PC with Word 2002 that printed perfectly with my Epson C66 which finally quit working, and in a roundabout way led to my new purchases. After moving the saved documents to my new PC I find that I cannot print the pages that include text at the lower protion of the page without losing some of the text at the bottom. These pages are constructed in such a way so that I cannot change the format without a complete redo of the project. Is it Word 2007 or is it the printer? The message I get from Word is "The margins are set outside the printable area of the page."
There must be a way to print these docs out "full page". Can anyone help with this one.

What do I need to fix this issue?

Answer:Hard Disk Test Failed Hard Disk 1roduct QE24UA#ABA ID: GG8KH...

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail  SATA hard drive can be used. I believe this model uses a laptop/mobile hdd.Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

Trying to help my mother with her word docs. She has MS Office 2003 with Word docs she created months ago. She's running XP. For some reason, all the word docs on her hard drive now open in RTF format and just look like code instead of the true word document. When she views the icons in the folders, they show rich text format instead of normal word docs. She recently added an external hard drive and when she opens the same documents that she has backed up to the external drive, they open normally.

Are there settings, etc that she can change to correct this? She hasn't made any changes to anything on her computer to cause this change.

Answer:Word docs on hard drive changed to rtf

My hard drive has less than 100gigs on it. Just bought a 250gig internal hard-drive which I have set-up as the 'slave.' On my original hard drive I want to keep just the operating system and most of the programs. How would I go about moving 'My Documents' to my new hard-drive? Will windows try to keep defaulting 'My Docs' to my original drive?

Also, what can i do about iTunes? Can anyone let me know how to get it to now tie in with My Documents/MY Music/iTunes on the other drive?

Answer:Extra Hard-drive - My Docs - iTunes

open the My Documents folder on the system drive and then copy the contents to the new location on the slave. You can edit the registry to change the default location of the My Documents folder but it's not something i'd recommend as you can just move the contents to the new folder and then change the settings of the programs which use My Documents.

I don't have iTunes myself but have done some work on a friend's pc who uses it and I distinctly remember a section in the settings where you can change the location of the iTunes folder (possibly Options -> Settings -> Library??)

Hello thank you for your time, I am experiencing issues with a dell dimension 4100. I have received a virus and was told upon startup to insert some kind of startup disk im not sure it was a while ago so me in all my stupidity tried to connect the hard drive to a different motherboard in the spot the dvd drive plugs in to in that cisnet computer. Well after a few tries i somehow got it to recognize the hard drive upon startup and it tried to format it i think, although as soon as i saw that screen i powered down and now the hard drive is no longer recognized by either computer, even in the bios it says the total memory is 512 mb with it connected to hard drive spot of the original dell. I would really like to get my dell working again but it gives me the error Invalid Boot diskette Insert Boot diskette in A: I do not care for restoring the files on the hard drive they are worthless to me i just want to get my computer working again any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you.

Answer:Non detected Disk Drive/Hard Drive Need help with dell Dimension 4100

Place OEM Windows CD into the CD or DVD drive and boot off of this disk. If your system doesnt want to boot off the CD or DVD drive go into bios and set the CD or DVD drive as 1rst boot device in boot order. Once you successfully boot off of your optical drive you then can delete the partition on the hard drive, create new partition and reformat, then install clean installation to that hard drive. If you dont have recovery or oem cd available, you will have to buy one.

Hello. I am working with The 15" Inspiron 3542 laptop and when I went to turn it on this morning, an all black screen came up and this message was written in small white letters near the top,

"internal hard disk drive not found
to resolve this issue, try to reset the drive. No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 enter Setup Menu, F5 enter PSA"
Please help. Thanks,

Answer:HELP - DELL INSPIRON 3542 "Internal hard disk drive not found..."

Hi Brandon,
Welcome to the Dell Community Forum.
Turn on the system, at startup or at Dell logo tap F2 to open BIOS. In the BIOS screen, check what is listed for fixed HDD. If the HDD size is not listed, try reseating the HDD & check if it helps. Refer to the link below for the service manual.

Long time reader of this forum and now have a question to post. Like many I have redirected my default docs, pix, etc. Folders from my SD to a second D: drive. No issue there.

I am upgrading my D drive and use ssr2013 which allows me to restore a secondary drive within the windows environment. So here is my question. My plan was to unplug my old drive D, plug in my new unformatted drive, boot up and restore.

But having been through many windows battles over the years, what will windows 7 do when it boots up and does not find a drive D and looks for those links? Well it freak out? Worse, will it grab one one of my other drives (which I guess one of which would now be drive D: and setup my docs etc there?
I can unplug all drives except C and the new drive to avoid that issue which seems safer regardless, can't restore to wrong drive!. But still need in put on what 7 will do and what the recommended method is for the restore.

Of course after my restore I want my defaults on the restored drive as they will be restored as the windows default locations.

I can do a bare metal boot up restore instead if all of the above creates issues. However the networking support seems better in windows.

Thanks for any input,

Answer:Moved default user docs and pix, now new hard drive

I would restore the folders to the original default location and then move them again once the new drive is installed. That's the safe way.

User Folders - Restore Default Location

If that is not possible (maybe there is not enough space on C), I would image the D partition and restore the image to the new drive.

I got an error on hard disk...

A hard disk devided to two partitions: (C - for OS Win XP Pro) and (D - 2nd partition).
The problem is, when i start the pc (windows was running but immediately restarted automatically - repeated). I take out the hard disk and installed it as a slave drive to other pc for data recovery before repair/format the problem hard disk.

FYI, the 2nd partition can be accessed and read. But the 1st partition of the hard disk (for OS) appeared this error when i try to open it : "THE DISK STRUCTURE IS CORRUPTED AND UNREADABLE". Is anyone can help me to solve this problem?

Windows XP sp2 wont boot from hard disk.

After much to do turns out my computer doesnt recognise the hard disk.

I have a seagate 500Gb SATA hard drive, its about a year old, the computer doesnt get hot in the slightest and it shouldnt be dead. I checked the wiring, as far as i can see, its all fine.

only conclusion i come to is that my hard disk is kaput which it shouldnt be. Can anyone give me any other possible solutions to try out before i cry and/or spend money on a new one? theres a lot of data on it i dont want to lose.

If not, ill plug it in to another computer to check, i havent done that yet because it will take me hours - i can only unscrew the hard drive from one side without rearranging the room.

Answer:Hard disk boot failure -> computer won't recognise hard disk

Is your Seagate the 7200.11 series?

We've been seeing a lot of harddrive issues layely that has nothing to do with the drive itself but bad SATA cables aas the cause. Do you have another one you can switch out?

When you say the computer doesn't recognize it we're talking the BIOS here, correct?

Another suggestion is what you have already suggested but I would "slave" it in antother system and see if you can access it that way.

Hi guys,

I will try to explain this as simple as i can.So let's start
I have laptop ASUS N75SF and it is a year old,so i have decided to format.I have two separate hard disks that are the same brand,SeaGate 9500423 AS, each 500 gb capacity. Before i decided to format , one of my hard disks(that is my partition D) started to make strange noises and it was not recognized, but i was using my laptop without problems because my windows was installed on my other hard disk (that is my partition C).So now my question is this :
After i formatted them both i have no clue which one is which ? they are like :
Disk 0 Partition 1 465 gb
Disk 1 Partition 2 465 gb
So how do i choose the one that is better and not having problems to pust my winodows on?
I know that i can buy new one and replace it with the one that is having problems, but right now i have no money to do that .I am student

Thanks in advance

Answer:Confused about installing Windows on my hard disk, hard disk problem

I have an Asus laptop running windows 7 64 bit and this laptop came with 2 hard drives, each partitioned into two parts (C:\ & D:\ and E:\ & F:\).
I am transferring over 30GB of data from one drive (C:\) to the other (F:\)
Get this... the transfer rate is 1.2MB/s right now. Over 9 hours left to copy the 30GB. There are over 125,000 items but that still does not justify the 1.2MB/s
I am open to any suggestions but first, a few points.
Yes, I am sure they are two separate drives with those partitions.
Error checking showed zero errors on both drives.
This is the 3rd time I am trying a transfer.
Both drives are relatively empty (especially the F:\).
C:\ is my system disk.
The SMART data shows no read/write errors or overheating.
I have disabled the virus protection and all real-time scanning.
Again, I am very open to suggestions and checks. Feel free to post your idea!
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Laptop Hard Disk to Hard Disk transfer Extremely Slow

My experience with file transfers of the type you that the number of files doesn't matter...what matters is how large the files are.  Video files take much longer than text or document files.
Slow transfer rates between partitions/drives...can indicate a problem with either the partititon or the drive, IMO.

A friend accidentally downloaded WPS office and somehow converted all his Word docs to WPS docs. I have no idea how or why this happened as I have never used WPS before, nor had I ever heard of it until this incident. Is there anyway to just safely convert everything back to normal?
This is on windows 10

Answer:Need advice changing WPS docs back to Words docs.

Are you sure the files were converted or are the files only now associated with WPS? Are the file extensions still .doc or docx? If yes then I would believe you can re-associate the the files with office. Right click the doc or a docx file and select open with. Select Office Word and check the box to always open with the selected program.
Note: WPS write documents have a .wps extension.

I am a new player here, so excuse me if i make a mess of this. I have a Sony Vaiol laptop and am  running vista.  I haven't used it for a lot other than internet, so data limited and space is problem started suddenly when i turned on pc and a black screen with the error message,"disk read error, press cntrl+alt+del to continuie."didnt do it! Wouldnt do anyuthing. Finally, I acquired legal sony recovery disks. And when the screen to choose operating system comes up, there is none so it says apply drivers and im lost, I have no familiarity with hard disk drivers so....but did bring up command prompt in recovery and through luck and lil else, i happened on chkdsk and found it to all check out but it does say NTFS not fat 32, but found no problems. Now Im dumb completely!!! Help if you can.

Answer:hard disk`??? wont reboot even with recovery disk yet all disk checks say fine.

Sony Vaiol laptop.Has problems of its own. It is not piratical to give you guidelines on this laptop. There have been many issues about how to repair and maintain it. The recovery discs should have everything you need. Here is a bit of advice, not really my own, try to sell the unit to somebody that thinks they know how to fix it. Then go buy a new or used laptop that will suit hour needs. The cost of ownership of any laptop is higher that many new users expect. Some more than others. This  may sound like a rant to put down Sony. It is not. Sony has made their own bed of nails. Look at this article from last year:Sony Vaio Laptop Recall: Everything You Need To KnowRead the article. You decide.

I automatically save all my important docs to Onedrive.
When I swap the drives, all the docs on Onedrive revert to the state they were in 3 months ago.
Have I set something wrong somewhere, or is this normal behaviour?

My PC has went belly up and I've managed to salvage the hard drive from it and put it in a caddy and the files are all there and look accessible however I cannot get into the My Documents folder because it's password protected. How do I get round that and rescue the data that is in there?

Answer:Solved: Rescue data from a hard drive but My Docs is password protected

If you're an administrator, I believe you can take ownership of the files. Not totally sure though. Simply having the same username as the user who created them is not sufficient because the SIDs will not match and you won't have access. If you right click on the folder and select properties, you should be able to take ownership.

Help! This is my first post here. I was having computer freezing issues on my Windows 7 64 bit Professional laptop today. I didn't have time for a full backup through the windows backup utility, though I did one in August 2013. However, I had several new/updated documents that I needed to save quickly, so I just copied/pasted to my external hard drive, the same one with the August 2013 full backup.

Now, most of my documents from the copy/paste set of documents (pdf, notepad txt, doc, docx, ppt, but not mp3, all of those work fine, as do pictures) open but are completely blank when opened or have many numerical zeros in them. However, ALL documents that I pulled from the August 2013 backup work perfectly fine. Documents that were unchanged from August to today and that I also copied/pasted also do not have content displayed, or they have an error message through adobe if opening a pdf ("Adobe Reader couldnt not open [name of document] because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

When I copied/pasted my documents, I just copied/pasted the main "Documents" folder itself. Interestingly, the problem of opening blank documents only occurs when I open the document from the main "Documents" folder. For files that were originally on my desktop that I also copied pasted to a separate location on my hard drive, no problems occur. ... Read more

Was your my documents folder set to be private or encrypted. It's possible the encrypted files were copied over. Now you are running out of a new install your encryption ID has been lost. I am not aware of a way to recover them.

What is the difference of 3.5 external hard disk (e.g. WD My Book) vs a 3.5 internal hard disk fixed into an enclosure to work like an external hard disk?

Are both good to be use as an external drive to store backup?

What 3.5 enclosure is good?

What do you mean fixed into an enclosure to work like an external drive? Are you referring to a My Book 3.0 VIA USB 3.0.... vs.... an internal SATA III SSD or HDD? Be a little more specific.

I am having this Hard Disk problem. My old Hard Disk (Samasung 500GB) (bought in 2010) started showing signs of corruption (like Windows doing chkdsk at every boot, and data getting lost). So I bought a NEW Hard Disk (Western Digital 1TB) last month (Sep 2016) to backup all the data from old one. I didn't have time to backup but wanted to use PC so I Clean Installed Windows 7 64bit on the New Western Digital 1TB and used it about a month without any problems.
A couple of days ago i decided to backup up the data. I reformatted the New Western Digital 1TB with Gparted and did a clean Windows 7 Install again. I connected the old Samsung 500GB to the motherboard and started copying the files to the new Western Digital 1TB.
Suddenly Windows showed me an error "Windows detected a hard disk problem" which makes sense because the Samsung 500GB is old and might be failing BUT the error is showing both of my Hard disk in the dialog box.
Is my new hard disk corrupt as well?
Why is Windows showing my new hard disk as failing?
Can Windows mistakenly show both hard disk in error?
Please help i am confused. sorry for a confusing question. i will answer anything required.
I have taken the screenshot of the error message, they are in attached files.
1)The 1st Screenshot shows both my Hard disk in the error box (OLD Samsung and NEW Western Digital WD)
2)The 2nd Screenshot shows only one of my Hard disk and its the new one (Western digital WD)
