Desktop [Favicons] Icons missing

Question: Desktop [Favicons] Icons missing

Hello Everybody,

This annoying problem has me a little perplexed, and I can't remember how to fix it!

The situation is this....I have created shortcuts on my desktop for sites that I use regularly; such as, TSF; eBay, and my Banks....when I create the shortcut, it appears on the desktop with the respective Logo for the site; however, when I have to reboot or start up in the mornings, the shortcuts are still there but without the logos..they all revert to jsut an "E"....is there any way that I can make the personilised logos remain?

I have tried things like locking the desktop, but to no avail.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....for reference, I have included a snapshot of my desktop, after I have chnged the icons to the original logos, but with one exemption this morning, and that is the TSF logo will not appear, only that revolting "E"!!

Regards,

Dave T.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Desktop [Favicons] Icons missing

Hi Dave..

one thing that may help would be to remove the favicons from your internet explorer cache and keep them in their own folder elsewhere. Then assign the shortcut icon.

If they stay in the temp files folder, they will be lost every time you clear the cache.

Hope that helps mate :-)

Ok so i was told to make my own thread so ill try to go thoroughly through what ive done, I will keep this 100% updated %100 for anyone else searching for the similar problem. Answer:Black Desktop, missing all icons, malware, start menu missing icons, programs all empty

I went through this same thing. The folders that say empty...are they light rather than normal? If so you didn't change the setting for files and folders correctly (I did the same thing at first) Open up windows explorer (my computer, etc) click on organize, then go down to folder and search options:

On the first tab (general) under navigation pane make sure "show all folders" is selected.

Then go to the next tab (view) and make sure those settings are correct, select the radio for "show hidden files, folders and drives" and make sure all your other settings are the way you want them.
I got mine from clicking on a link to a website I'd never gone to before and then what i thought was adobe told me that I needed to update my flash player to view the content on the page, I clicked ok and it took over my computer with the same exact things you're talking about.

Can't access Outlook. 9 times out of ten the desktop is blank when the computer starts. no icons anywhere. just the desktop background. When it does start sometimes it says can't find a drive on the network. I don't think we have that. A secure financial website says we have a virus but I've run spybot and adaware and not found anything. We have eTrust antivirus and it showed no problems. Please help.

Whenever I reboot this laptop the Desktop Icons are not visible.
If I right mousebutton click then View -> Show Desktop Icons, then the tick box is already checked.
If I unckeck it and then recheck it, then all the icons reappear; tedious!
Please can you help.

Thank you - Mike

This morning when I booted up my desktop, all of my icons on the desktop were missing, although the shortcut is still there and works. The icons in the taskbar now have a generic looking icon. Right clicking on the start menu no longer brings up the menu and when I go to file explorer no icons appear.

How can I get these things back? Everything was working fine yesterday when I logged off and it didn't appeared to have an update.

Please help.

Hi,
My computer's desktop is blank (black) with no desktop icons.

My task bar icons are missing.
My windows button doesn't open.
I can not access settings (even using CTRL R -> ms-settings: OR right-clicking task-bar. It "times out").
There is "no wireless interface on the system".
My computer constantly gets BSOD (every error possible - i can't remember the error codes. Frequent ones that appear are WatchDogViolation and Memory Management).

I haven't been bothered to fix this problem until recently and was quite happy navigating using CTRL+R but now I'm annoyed. I have tried/watched multiple solutions however, there's always something missing in order to fix the problem, such as opening settings (which i can't do as seen above) or when i feel like i'm almost there, BSOD appears.

This is my last resort before "calling a guy" to help.

If anyone could help that would be great

Thanks,

I put about ten shortcuts onto my desktop, such as ones for eBay, Google, Amazon, etc.; however, they all have Edge's standard blue icons. This makes the whole group appear as a monolithic bunch of icons that all look the same and not so easy to read. Is there a way to change these desktop icons to the various websites' favicons, making them easier to see/read/use?

I think that you can right-click a shortcut, then choose "Properties," then click on "Change Icon." However, from there, I'm stuck, because it offers me the option of browsing to the icon I want, but I don't know how to get to any favicon that I might want.

It's easy to find those websites' favicons, using Google images, and I can then save them onto my desktop, but I don't know how to get them from there onto their relevant shortcuts. I think there is a cache, called something like "shell32.icon" or whatever, which holds icons, but I'm not sure if that's anything I want to mess with, because I'm fully aware that messing with those kinds of files can lead to disastrous results, such as the computer freezing up, the 'blue screen of death,' etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently taken the leap and upgraded my browser from IE6 to IE7 on my XP-Home machine.

I normally have a bunch of shortcuts on my desktop. To reduce the clutter I had put them in a folder, also on the desktop.

Since the change to IE7 a curious thing has happened. All of the shortcuts in that folder have lost their favicons. The favicons have been replaced with the generic “E”.

What’s interesting is if I go into the properties the original icon is there, in the upper left hand side. If I click “Change Icon” to correct the situation, nothing happens.

Lastly, if I simply create a new shortcut on the desktop the icon is correct.

Go figure.

Any help would be appreciated. Otherwise I’ll just live with it.

Thanks,

Tom

Answer:Icon/Favicons missing

Did you create this folder yourself or did you use the desktop cleanup wizard which creates a folder on the desktop called "Unused Desktop Shortcuts"?
You might have to drag all the icons in that folder back onto the desktop, then run the Desktop Cleanup Wizard and place a check mark in the icons you want to remove.

There is a program you can install and run called FavOrg which rebuilds shortcut Icons but this app is for the favorites icons.

Every time I try (like by dragging them there from Bookmarks) they end up with the Firefox icon. I'm running XP with SP2. (I used to be able to do this with XP and MSIE 6.x but that too suddenly stopped working.)

I know this is an old post, but I've also lost my icons. I verified that I hadn't just hidden them, and I used command prompt to restart explorer.exe, but nothing showed up. I'm using Windows 8.1 on a Dell laptop.
I have everything on my taskbar, and as far as i can tell, everything else is working (if not maybe a little slower), it's just my icons.

Answer:missing all icons on desktop

Open Windows Explorer. Go to the Winnt folder, then Profiles. Check the start menu and the startup folder under that for each profile listed there. You should be able to find your programs listed with the shortcuts. Just copy the shortcuts you want to the desktop folder under your profile. If you get an "access denied" error message, it means you don't have the proper rights or permissions to be able to do this and you will have to get your administrator to do it for you or change your permissions. Good luck!

The Icons on my Desktop for "My computer", "My Network Places" and "My Documents" have all disappeared. I run XP set up for 2 users and these icons do not show on either Desktop. I have tried System Restore but it doesn't seem to make any difference unless I need to go back further. Yesterday I ran CCleaner and Adaware, but I run these regularly anyway with no problems. does anyone have any ideas how I can get these back? Due to a problem I had with windows installer starting to load for Sonic update I deselected isuspm and issch in msconfig. as suggested in an answer to a similar problem on this site.

Hi. I am having a very strange problem with my Sony VAIO. Coule of days back, I got a virus which would not let me do anything but to buy their softwere for computer maintenance. I decided to do System Restore on an earlier date. It was done successfully but with a probelm. I had tons of stuff including folders, doc files, pics, excel sheet etc on my Desktop. After the system restore all icons disappeard from DT. I had backups of some of the files so I tried to copy my files on the desktop but it gives me msg that file already exists but there is no file which i can see. I have tried everything possible, includind right click, view, show icons, refreshing desktop, checking the file properties if they are hidden, they are not. I can see the doc files when I open MS-Word and open files from desktop and I can save on Desktop but on Desktop I cannot see those files. I have other icons visible on the DT.

I am using Windows 7 home premium. Any clues what is going on and how can it be fixed. I have files on DT but I cant see them Even after I have copied from backup to DT.

I need serious help please. Thanks in advance.
Regards
Nasir

Answer:icons missing from Desktop

Unfortunately, some malware causes damage to the system.

First, you need to make sure Malware is not affecting your system. Download this,

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50.1 - FileHippo.com

install it, update the database and run a FULL scan.

If it finds anything, post the log here.

I removed all of the icons from my desktop because, well, I don't like looking at them. :-D Today, I deleted something, that I thought was something else and now I'm curious to see what it was and if it's in the recycle bin. Problem is, I can't get to the recycle bin to show back up on my desktop.

I tried Control Panel>Personalization>Change desktop icons and I re-selected recycle bin, hit apply but it's still not showing up. How else can I get it back?
Fyi: I can't right click anything because my right click button on my touchpad is broken and so is my usb mouse (they hate me I swear LOL) so I need to be able to access anything without the need to right click.

Thanks guys!
Oh.. and it's Win7.

My grandsons computer his Aunt gave him has an icon problem. When you shut off the computer, then turn it back on later, the desktop icons and taskbar, start button all do not show up. You usually have to either do the on/off 3 or 4 times using a forced shutoff or do the f8 last best configured mode. No other mode works just the last best configuration. I do not have the computer with me as it will be an ongoing process over time. It is a dell computer (sorry I do not have that much info yet) and is not new. Any ideas to start with would be greatly appreciated. Did all security scans, SAS, MBAM, Spybot, Windows Security Suite, etc. Nothing shows up. Cleaned all temp files, removed unwanted items, checked off all useless items on Startup menu thinking that might be the problem, too much on startup but to no avail. Still no Icons unless you play with it. Checked drivers and Hardware manager, nothing. Any ideas to start with would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

On my Dell 1545 laptop with Vista Home Premium, there used to be a panel across the top of the desktop with icons for the recycle bin;camera;office;video; mail; etc., and also one for IE. They have vanished in the last few days, so I must have done something incorrectly. (One thing springs to mind is that I did install a program - Decrap, and I think that may have had something to do with the problem)
Can anyone suggest how I can restore these missing items in a panel across the top of the desktop ? They seemed to be only Microsoft shortcuts, and I found them very useful.
The recycle bin was the usual picture of one; the camera one was a symbol of a camera; office - beaker with pens etc. therein; etc, etc.
Hoping someone can help me rectify matters.

Answer:Desktop - missing icons.

Run a restore point from just before the Decrap install. If you don't have such a restore point I would get in the habit of having 4 or 5 spread out over a span of several weeks. Also look in Decrap. Maybe it has an undo function.

Hi,
After a malware infection (Inet2 and SpySherriff - which took over my desktop) I cleaned up some files, directories and registry-entries. Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro.
My question is: what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?

A few days ago, after finding 18 viruses, I reformatted my daughter's computer. In addition to the bugs, it was painfully slow and she had quite a lot of rubbish clogging up the works so I decided it would probably be quicker to wipe everything off and start again. A massive improvement achieved, except for one small problem which occured last night. Everything was fine when I left it, and when she turned it off. When she later started up again all the icons had disappeared from the desktop. How do I get them back again? I'm sure I've seen this problem, and the answer, somewhere but can't think where, and, of course, can't remember what the answer was. The OS is Win. ME if that helps and it is an Evesham PC that is beginning to show its age and is badly in need of upgrading, or replacing.

I had another thread going here http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=162496 and that issue has been solved, but these two threads are for the same PC. The reason I did the repair install in the first place was because all the desktop icons have disappeared, as has access to the control panel. I was hoping the repair install would fix the problem of no icons. The wierd thing is, is that I was doing some malware removal, and things were going really well. I had icons, I had access to the control panel, I had successfully re-enabled the task manager, and we had smiles all around. After finishing a scan (A-Squared IIRC) I rebooted. Now no icons. WTF?!?!?!
Any ideas? Anyone?

Thanks.

I have looked at the [right click]desktop/view & "show icons" is checked.

No big deal as I can recreate them as needed but why?

Hi, on startup after I enter my password all I get is a mouse pointer and my desktop pic. Tried Ctl alt del and can see explorer.exe running. Also tried to run it as a new task but still no good. If I reboot sometimes I then get my icons back or I may need to reboot several times before they return.

Also when trying to go to system restore settings I get error saying cannot find rundll32.exe. Did a search and found 12 rundll32 files in C:\windows\prefetch. Also found the rundll32.exe in c:\windows\system32 and rundll32.exe.vir in c:\windows\system32.

Not sure if these two problems are related.

I am using CA anti virus plus anti spyware.
Thanks for any assistance

Hello, I have a Dell Inspiron 600m with Windows XP in which the desktop icons no longer appear unless I put a CD/DVD into the laptop. I've also gotten twice a blue screen saying that my computer has to be restarted and this also appears in the blue screen IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

In another board we tried searching for malware but after using three different malware scanners only low risk tracking cookies came up.

Hey, all! My brother bought a new laptop a few weeks ago and now whenever he starts the computer from shutdown, none of the desktop icons appear. The taskbar is showing, and all of the desktop icons are located in the desktop folder, however none of them show up. The only remedy I have found so far is unchecking the " Show Desktop Icons" option and then re-enabling it. This only works until the computer is shutdown again, in which case they disappear when it starts up. Does anyone happen to know what the cause of this is? I scanned the computer using Avast but nothing was flagged as being suspicious.

The laptop is an Asus U81A-RX05 running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit with SP1. Let me know if there is any other information that might be able to help.

Thanks!

When I start up my computer and log into windows xp home edition my desktop icons no longer appear. It seems that my computer is just idleling until I go into the task manager and tell it to run something. My desktop background is still there but nothing else even shows up. The tool bar on the bottom is even gone.

I did have some Spyware Gaurd 2009 pop on my tool bar before but then I updated my anti-virus with Macafee via AT&T and I thought that it helped but 2 days later it was back again. So I was talking to this IT guy about it and he suggested that I download AVG software for my system and it should take it off. Well I did and still no luck with getting my desktop back to normal.

Please help.....

I have a Samsung laptop running Win& Home Premium and just recently some desktop icons keep going missing! It's always the same icons and they are for links that I have added (i.e not prog icons), such as documents or pieces of music.
They are also only ones on the RH side of the screen (but not all of them!) I haven't had any Blue Screens, power offs or other disasters - they just disappear (I think) when I occasionally reboot the thing (I tend to put it to sleep normally).
Is there a box somewhere that I should put a tick into?

Hey everyone,

I'm running Windows XP Home on my laptop that I take to university (I'm home for Christmas !)

One day I started my laptop and 2 of my desktop icons were missing! I had a shortcut to a web based University network drive and a standard web page shortcut. Both the icons (the lil pictures) has disappeared. I can still open each shortcut by double clicking on the transparent space where they should be but there are no icons!

Any help would be GRATEFULLY appreciated!

Shows that the shortcut does have a proper icon associated with it but just doesn't use it!

I've tried to start in safe mode via f8, but only get option of what to boot first-- no option to start in safe mode. I've booted my os disc this way, as well as putting the disc in after wallpaper is up -- no luck. When I had my desktop icons disappear I left click on the desktop put the pointer over "arrange icons by" and in the sub menu and then I select "auto arrange."

My icons are rearranged and the couple that disappeared reappeared.

Somehow they had gotten off of the visible area of the screen.

I think I may have changed my resolution or some such thing to cause that.

Answer:Desktop icons missing

Try this.

start up the Windows XP Task Manager and select the Applications tab.

Now select the New Task button at the bottom of the window. A new smaller window will appear. In it simply type:

explorer.exe

explorer.exe is the Windows Program Manager (or Windows Explorer.) It manages the Windows Graphical Shell including the Start menu, taskbar, desktop, and File Manager. By restarting this process the graphical interface for Windows will reappear.

Hello,
Could really use some help on this. I tried searching if anyone else had this problem so if it's out there, if someone could redirect me to the topic where it is already covered that would be great too. I am running windows xp pro. I have tried running super anitspyware, spybot search and destroy, ad aware and nod 32. When I boot up in safe mode everything comes up fine, however when I boot up in normal mode all my dekstop icons and toolbar won't comeup and all I see is my background. All I can do is a ctl+alt+del to get a run cmd going and run a program from there. Any ideas on what is hosing my pc from letting the desktop icons and toolbar load?
Thanks

Answer:Missing Toolbar And Desktop Icons

First try to pull up the start menu (which in turn, will pull up the task bar) by pressing Ctrl+Esc. If the task bar comes up, right click on an empty space on the Taskbar and click on "Properties" . Under the "Taskbar" tab, make sure "Lock the task bar" is checked, and "Auto hide the taskbar" is unchecked. Hope this works.

Happy April Fools day!

I somehow caught a bug on my laptop while attempting to help someone with theirs!

I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3

The issue is all of my icons, folders, desktop, start menu options are gone. I tried doing a system restore to a point before it started this problem but it's almost as if whatever bug this is has erased all of my restore points.

I have attempted using rkill and malware bytes but neither will run properly. Rkill and Malwarebytes will start to run and then give a message to say access is denied.

Ever since I tried to remove a particular nasty bout of spywear a few weeks ago, my laptop has been taskbar-less and desktop icon-less. There are a bunch of clues here, but I can't seem to piece them together into a solution. I can't seem to tell if I lost an important file from my systems32 folder, or if there's just some spywear in there that I can't get out.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Operating System is Windows XP
Upon Boot, after logging in, the desktop background is shown, but nothing else.
Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del brings up the Task Manager. Programs can be run through the "New Task" option, and browsing for the executable.
Running explorer.exe or Windows Explorer causes the task bar to pop up for an instant, but disappear quickly.
Doing a cmd/ scannow brings up a progress bar, but upon completion, the dialogue disappears, and nothing happens.
Spywear and Ad-aware come back clean.

I'm not sure exactly when it happened, but I know that it was within the past 3 days.
The only recent change that I've made was 3 days ago. I uninstalled my DVD Rom drive and installed a new DVD +RW drive. Installation went fine, DVD plays and I can use all of the features.
But today I noticed that alot of folders that I have created over the past year or two have suddenly disappeared. And 3 of my desktop Icons changed to the windows default icon?
When I right click on the icons and try to look at the "properties" I get a message box that says "cannot be found at that location" or something to that affect.
The folders that are missing are folders that I created inside of other folders, for example, I had created a folder inside of "My Pictures" folder and named it "My Backgrounds", inside that folder I had several pictures that I like to use as backgrounds. The entire folder "My Backgrounds" is now missing.....including the pictures.
I also had created a folder inside the "My Documents" folder and named it "Misc. Pics", inside that folder I had created 6-7 other folders with different names and I stored various pics inside of each of those folders. Now the only things left inside the "Misc. Pics" folder are pics that I had not put in any of the other sub folders, but all of the other folders are now gone...including those pics. I also had digicam videos stored in "My Videos" fold... Answer:Missing Folders And Desktop Icons

Have you tried searching for the files? IE/ Start --> search --> "Name of file" or if you know the files type you can do *.jpg or whatever the file type was. A * is a wildcard meaning it will pull up all .jpg files. Then you have to select the drive (normally C:). As far as all your Anti-virus programs go, you really don't need all of them. I would keep the Avast, and dump defender. Super Antispyware is a great program, keep that one. Also when did you upgrade to service pack 3 for XP? I know alot of people are still having issues with it.

Hello-

I have Autoruns on my system and trying to speed things up a bit I went in to tweak a little and turn off some start-up items. Apparently I turned off something that I need but don't know what it is to turn it back on.

Now when I boot up, I get my wallpaper on my desktop....but no shortcut icons. They come up when I right click the desk top.

Help?

Thank you.

Earlier this evening, a message popped up on my laptop saying that a program needed my permission to continue, I can't remember exactly what program it was now but I believe it said Microsoft something. I tried clicking cancel once and it popped up again, and just thinking it was an update or something I clicked continue. Everything seemed fine, and then I noticed firefox just randomly closed, so I clicked on it again and the tabs I had opened restored themselves and again it was fine for awhile, then firefox closed again and I noticed a majority of my desktop icons had suddenly disappeared, and also the start-up menu program list was empty. I can still get on the internet but if I click on a link on google it redirects to an ad. When I first saw that my desktop icons had disappeared, I ran malwarebytes and it came up showing I was infected with 17 things so I had them removed and restarted my laptop, however after it restarted nothing was back to normal, I've also tried to do 2 system restores, and got an error afterwards saying it didn't work, I also tried loading to my last good configuration which didn't work either. I've tried malwarebytes again but it won't open and if it does it only runs for a few seconds before closing again. If this is a virus I would love to get rid of so any advice would be great, thanks.

I had the message to reboot in order to remove some spyware and after I did that, all the desktop icons are gone, including the tool bar. The only thing left is the background picture. I rebooted in safe mode, under "default user", icons were there, rebooted to "last known good config", and used "system restore to last know good start up (through the tools area)Any ideas as to what happened and how to correct?

Hello All,

I have gone through a number of posts on this problem and tried them but they did not work for me. Here is my problem:

Yesterday a user complained that there laptop had slowed down in recent days. I went ahead and ran msconfig the I deleted most of the programs that were running on startup. I also stopped some services. The PC speed improved but when the user restarted the laptop there were no icons or taskbar.

I pressed ctrl-alt-del and started task manager. I started explorer.exe and my computer showed up with the drives on the machine. I also ran sfc /scannow and it did give any errors, i created another profile and it has the same results. When I right click on the desktop nothing shows up. I booted into safe mode and there are no restore points to recover to.

I suspect the problem is registry related and was caused by me deleting the startup programs. I am not sure how I can restore the laptop without reinstalling it.

Any advice???

Noel

Answer:Missing desktop icons and taskbar

I would be more curious as to exactly what services you disabled. Nothing in startup should prevent proper boot.
Did you check their dependencies before deactivating them?
Sometimes even we more knowledgeable folks get in a rush and forget to do the simple things.

All of a sudden my desktop icons and files disappeared. System restore finally gave me back the icons and folders; however, all the data in the folders is still missing. Would like to know if anyone has an idea as to what caused this and do I need to worry that it will happen again. Also scan the system files and it stated that some of the windows files were corrupted. How would I go about fixing this problem.

Answer:desktop icons missing after backup to ext HDD

Took me ages to find this problem.
It is Windows 7 Maintenance cleaning up periodically.
The brute force way is to turn it off.
Control Panel/System and Security/Find and Fix Problems/Change settings
There is a a way to stop unused or unavailable shortcuts being deleted without turning all of Maintenance Off, but I have forgotten it.

I have two systems with identical hardware and on both systems, the desktop icons randomly vanish.

Both Reliability History and Problem Report failed to detect the error in question. Event viewer doesn't seem to detect the error either.
I am aware of the scale of this issue and I can't seem to find a fix anywhere (except for the usual Right Click > View and Show Desktop Icons, which is kinda obvious).
If you require information such as Windows Version, Installed Apps/Updates, Hardware and such, I am happy to provide it upon request.

Hi,
A friend of mine gave me her Surface tablet to try and fix a few weird issues she's having with it. I've never worked with one before, but I'm familiar with Windows and would consider myself a power user.

She said the Start screen is missing her normal application icons and would like them restored. I've been unable to find anything showing how to do that, and hoped someone could help. Here's what the current screen looks like:

She was also saying IE was acting weird, but I didn't find any real abnormality yet. I ran Windows Defender and it found nothing. Is there any further virus scanning that needs to be done?

I thought it would be easier to just "Refresh your PC without affecting your files", but it complained that I didn't have enough space. This tablet has 25GB with about 7GB free. I've deleted all temporary files and there aren't even any apps other than Netflix installed that could be uninstalled to make space available.

How do I backup her configuration to a USB key? At that point, I can then just perform a factory reset, if I have to.

I'd still really like to know how to just restore the icons, if that's possible, however.

Thanks so much.

Answer:Icons missing from desktop on Surface

It works the same was as the regular install on a desktop or laptop. If she only has 32GB of Hard Drive space, what does it state in Disk Management? It does help if you have a Keyboard with the Surface, not just a touch screen.

So, I rebuilt my computer (windows xp) about a week ago. Everything was fine, it was working wonderfully until one day, I turned it on, and my desktop icons and taskbar wouldn't load. I have no idea how to fix this. I can't right click. If I press the windows key, nothing happens. I've gone to the task manager and tried to run explorer.exe, but it says it can't find it. I've also through command prompt, don't a disk check for disk c and no change.
The only thing I can think of that may be causing this is a driver I installed. I was updating my drivers, seeing as the computer had just been rebuilt, and I went to the dell website to get them. I tried to download a bunch at one time andit froze up the computer, so I just restarted it. The next day, this problem. Help please?

The symptoms started with a warning about hard drive failure. I have run a variety of scans, including booting Kaspersky Rescue Disk from USB when no other scans would run. Kaspersky found rootkit Boot.SST.b and disinfected, ESET online scan will still not run, and MBAM finds no infections. Desktop items are in the folder but not displaying now, and the start menu is missing most items as well.

I have windows xp and I am having a problem when the first time I log in a user, the screen is blank, there isn't any icons, no start bar. I then have to ctrl alt del, logoff and then log back in and the icons are there. There has also been an unbelievable amount of pop ups in IE. I run ad-aware about once a week, but it can never delete everything that I check. The computer locks up more than it used to and there has been a few blue screens lately, and sometimes in IE the screen doesn't go full size.

I know that there is a lot of issues here, but I would like help with any of it.

For maximizing IE windows;
Open an instance of Internet Explorer. Hover the mouse over the edge of the window until a two-headed arrow appears. The hold down the left mouse button while dragging to the edge of the screen. Once you have IE maximised this way (don't use the maximise button) hold down the Shift key and click the close [X] button. The next time you open IE it should open maximised.

If you are opening IE from a desktop shortcut, right-click on the shortcut and select Properties. From the dropdown list next to Run, select Maximised. Then click OK

Why is it that my desktop icons have no captions? I can see them when I select the icon to try to Rename it.

From what I've read, this sometimes happens in Vista too, but I haven't found any solutions. It didn't happen for me until I upgraded from 64-bit Vista to 64-bit Windows 7.

Been using the RC now for a year w/ no issues but finally had to upgrade. Did a fresh install of Win7 64 Pro. Performed all the updates, loaded my apps all is good. Then on a reboot my desktop icons no longer appeared. I verified that they were still selected. I then went thru the steps to delete the iconcache.db per http://i.nconspicuo.us/2007/08/28/rebuild-windows-vista-icons-cache-vista-displaying-wrong-icons/ as ive had this happen with past Win OS's. But still no luck. Even when i go & create a new shortcut now, it wont appear. Any ideas? Attached image showing that my user folder & my computer are to be on desktop, along w/ 2-3 app shortcuts.
