[SOLVED] Can't get past "You Computer was turned off incorrectly"

Question: [SOLVED] Can't get past "You Computer was turned off incorrectly"

I'm getting this same error: Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

My computer is stuck in a continuous reboot loop. It will not recognize the Windows XP CD.

I have set up the boot order in the BIOS to detect the CD-ROM drive first, then the hard drive, but it still does not see the CD.

Any suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer has been working fine up until today. Last night i turned it off by just pressing the power button, instead of start, shutdown... etc.
Now when i turn it on it goes to the screen saying your computer has been turned off incorectly etc...

chose a mode to continue

safe mode
safe mode with command prompt
start with last settings that worked
start windows normally

the screen freezes when the last two are choosen
and in any of the safe mode start-up options it begins putting lines of text on the screen finishing with:
Muti(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys
The computer then freezes like that and will not continue.

I have already tried repairing my installation of Windows XP using the windows XP cd.

Also i tried checking and repairing my hard disk using: chkdsk /r

none of these things have made any difference...

can somebody please help me, or reccomend further steps to try?

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Boot from the windows XP CD, press the "R" key in the setup in order to start the Recovery Console.
Select your windows XP installation from the list, and enter the administrator password. If not password was set just press Enter
Enter the command: "FIXMBR" (without the quotes) at the input prompt and confirm the next question with a "Y" (without the quotes). Use exit to restore the computer.

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Hello all,

I have a Compac desktop, it's relatively new as far as use. Recently, it's not been used because of a startup issue. It will load the first screen (The compac screen and act like it's it going to load up) but then loops back to the first screen and continue to do this over and over. My mother told me that the computer had fallen off of out computer hutch (About 2 inches off the ground) and heard an interesting noise inside. She described the sound like a CD hitting the floor, but I looked inside the desktop, and nothing seemed to be out of place.
I want to get the data files and documents, but as stated above, I cannot use the computer.
I have a Ubuntu CD already made, and have used it before.. Unfortunately, the CD drive doesn't seem to be recognizing the disc. I can see the little white blinking "-", but that is all I can get to come up before the screen goes into another loop; and the previous process.
I was hoping some one could possibly help me out in getting the computer to the point to save the data? I have the option to reformat the whole computer, but I'd rather save that for last measures if the data cannot be recovered.
Again, the computer is a compac, Windows XP OS, desktop - only about 3 years old.

Answer:Computer will not boot past the "Compac" startup screen.

Dell N4110
I wish I could get an error code on it, perhaps you guys can enlighten me.

So I upgraded a couple weeks back to Win10 and it's been running sleeping restarting etc. Just fine. Then at random it shut down and has been stuck while trying to boot. I can get to the "Continue/Troubleshoot/Turn off your PC screen but even when I've tried to "Reset this PC" it just hangs there, even after leaving the machine untouched for a full 24 hours...

Maybe someone can help me get an error code first so I can specify what's up. Also as mentioned I cannot boot past the troubleshoot screen.

BIG TIA folks

Answer:Win 10 Restart issue: computer won't get past "diagnosing issues"

I had something like this, when resetting PC back to factory settings from my USB recovery stick wouldn't work, even when everyone seemed to think it should. I had to get myself into StartUp Options area, launch command prompt, blow away all my partitions and then run recovery USB to get it to work.

Hi all, This is a great forum you have here! OK I am having a very low-tech month I think. I am trying to trouble shoot a problem with my system which had been running reasonably well until now -- I say reasonably well because lately I seem to have hit some hardware challenges. More on that later, however (if required).

In order to trouble shoot my issues, I find myself needing to reinstall Windows 7 (My boot disk which is an SSD seems to cause the system to hang when it is connected so I am trying to install a new verion of Win 7 to troubleshoot the other from). Now I have ample space on a couple of drives so that is where I targeted. Everything runs fine in the installation process, the system reboots and I am presented the screen to enter a system name. I enter a name but the "next" button is protected and not clickable . Does this mean anything to anyone?

This seems very rudimentary but frankly I can't find anything to make it go

Ok well my computer when turned on gets to the screen that says

"windows closed unexpectedly"..etc and gives the options of

"safe mode"
"safe mode with netwroking"
"safe mode with command prompt"
"start windows normally"
"start windows with most recent working config" (or something similar)

Im sure most of you are familiar with this screen, when any of the options is selected
the computer begins to start up but then makes a struggling noise and returns to that screen
we can get past it.

If someone could help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a compaq machine, with Windows 2000 Professional, and the last thing I did was install a trend micro anti virus program.  This morning, I turned the computer on and I got a rectangular box that said "password key" with a little picture of a key on it, and down below to the right it says F10.  So I restarted the computer, held down the F10 key figuring I could try to get to BIOS (not that I really know what I'm doing), but it still came up with this message.  It wouldn't let me do anything. This computer doesn't have a password on it.  I've never installed one, so why is it coming up with this message now?

Answer:Turned on computer and received a "password key" message

I sent an email to a few hundred people and for around 40 of them i got this "Warning: message could not send for the past 4 hours" email back. I understand that its not a Fail message and this this is one of those "there are no stupid questions" things but i would like to know:

What does this mean anyway?
Does the person receive my email if i do not get a Failure message after this?
Is there a way that i will not receive this message and only receive total failure messages?

I had the a few hundred other messages go through fine so i don't understand what causes this to happen to just a few dozen emails.

Thank you for being kind to Stupid Questions

Answer:Solved: What does "Warning: message could not send for the past 4 hours" mean anyway?

Let's say I work for a company whose email goes to abc.com; you send to me at [email protected] and get one of those messages back. The message means, in essence, that your mail got to abc.com, but some kind of problem with the system prevented the message from being sent to my actual mail server or computer. It's possible that the reason my be that I was fired and you will eventually get a "hard" failure message, but generally it means that abc will fix their system and the message will eventually get to me.

I'm sure there are some exceptions but, in general, I will get the message if you don't latter get a "hard" failure message.

I am reasonably sure that I shut my girlfriend's computer down with no issues last night, but this morning when she turned it on the computer had her wallpaper up with no icons instead of the User login page. She hard-reset, and ever since then - no matter which user we log in as - Vista won't load past the Welcome screen.

It will load up in all three compatibility modes, but the Last Known Good Configuration only loads to a blank black screen which I can move the pointer around on.

I've run a virus scan, and jv16 Power Tools says the registry is now clean, but the computer is still having issues. Would fixing registry errors be why the Last Known Good Configuration doesn't work?

The computer is an Intel Core 2 Duo Sony VAIO, with 4GB RAM running Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer:Solved: Vista Won't Load Past "Welcome" Screen

I would undo any changes that jv16 Power Tools made.
Using a registry cleaner can and often does, cause more problems than it solves.
Do you have the Vista install DVD?

Hi, my Acer Aspire 5610Z laptop is only loading up to the "welcome" screen, with the spinning blue circle. This has been happening every few weeks for the past few months, and I can usually get it to work, but now it isn't. I've tried Startup Repair, System Restore, chkdsk /f, and the "ctrl-alt-del at the welcome screen" method, all to no avail. Safe mode boots fine. I could back up my files and restore the computer to factory settings, but I'd rather that be a last resort.

Any ideas?

Edit: I am on Service Pack 2, by the way.

Hi

I have recently tried to disinfect a computer of various malware/spyware issues. But now I think my motherboard has had it. Its either infected with something or was a coincidence that it packed up when it did.

When I boot up the computer, it goes as far as the "Loading Windows XP" and then beeps once and goes back to trying to boot up again. It then displays the option to start in safe mode (with/without network support, Last known good configuration or Start normally). It then counts down from 30 and reboots itself

My mouse and keyboard no longer work

I have tried to swap the hard drive for one that I know works, in case the hard drive was knackered, but get the same result

Am I right in thinking that my motherboard has had it?

When attempting to browse folders using Explorer opened from Start Menu Or left click on start button, Explorer will allow click on "-" to close paths, but hangs with hour glass if any attempt is made to expand any path or open any file. Explorer remains in this state until closed, at which time Windows asks if I wish to report the problem to Microsoft.
If I use the "My Computer" icon on the desktop to browse, all actions including access to networked resources work perfectly.
Can anyone please explain the difference between the two file browsing utilities and offer an explanation of the above?

I had a problem before the holidays which this group identified correctly as long-term corruption and I solved the issue with a clean 10 install. All now great except...I had to go into the Users/Media path to replace a saved Chrome history file and noticed that the Users/Media folder had been named using the first five letters of my forename. Everything seems to be working ok but ignoring the gibberish name, rather than continue with something which may go strange in the future I wonder is it possible to change the name back to "Media"? I imagine there are any number of links to the OS so simply renaming would not work...would this be a regedit thing?
thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Answer:After clean install, "Users/Media" folder named incorrectly

You have to create a local account first to get the exact user name that you want. Then convert the local account to a Microsoft account login. So, what you will have to do is create a local account with the username Media. Change it to an Administrator account. Log in to Media locally. Delete your first account you created. Change the Media account to the Microsoft account login.

Hi All, hope someone can help a not-too-pc-savvy type:I recently loaded up my CD collection onto a hard drive in preparation for an overseas posting as I didnt want to lug 500++ albums halfway around the planet. I used the Media PLayer on line service to pull down the track listings where available. At first Media Player would not let me play many of my wma files, insisting I needed a licence. I seem to remember choosing an option to download a licence initially, and only then being able to play them. On trying to do anything with about half my wma files (aside from playing them in Media Player ), I get a message "Protected Content". On checking the "Properties" section is reads the WMA files are all protected. I do not know if this is what is referred to as "DRM" protection or not. Please note about half of the 4,500 wma files are now marked protected, the remainder are not. It affects whole albums (ie an album is either entirely protected or entirely unprotected)This is particularly annoying because many of them are old vinyl jazz albums I burnt to CD myself (and still own the originals!!!) Even more galling is that some of them are my own recordings of myself (i am a wannabe muso). So I cant load them onto my MP3 player or load them into Audacity for doing some "mashups" for my own amusement. You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

I think I would run memory and hard drive diagnostics. Maybe included in your BIOS (Setup) or Recovery partition or set of Recovery DVDs tools. Memtest86+ is a popular test. The hard drive manufacturer usually has the best diagnostics for it.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

I am not sure about the "quick" way of restoring, but what you can do is go back to services, "RIGHT-CLICK" the white area select "HELP" then the third option is "Default settings for services"

you can see what the default was and manually restore it. I have tried to copy and paste it below

I have searched to see if this was asked before without any success. Maybe someone has run into this problem before.
When I open "my computer" or "control panel" after I close it...it automatically goes into Internet Explorer as a blank page. Most of the time, when I close the IE blank page...it stops responding and I have the control-alt-delete to "end the program"
Thanks in advance for any help.

The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

Answer:External Hard Drive doesn't show up in "my computer" but does in "device manager"

Does it show in Disk Management ? ?
Right clik My Computer...select Manage...then Disk Management.
Find the drive...right clik it and select Properties.

I am hoping that someone can help me with what may be a complex question.

I have a spreadsheet, similar to the demonstration file I have attached. In it, there are a range of columns. One set of columns (A - D), shows a list of numbers that are references to items in a store, and it also shows their location in the store, so it acts as a floor-plan. The next column (E) lists those items again to show the dollar amount that those items have produced in total sales (F).

So, what I'd like to do is to add a conditional formatting to show me the "cold" and "hot" spots on the floor-plan so I can see where sales are most concentrated. I would assume that this would be done with a colour scale (using the range of values in column F to work itself out)?

Either way, the figures in column F would change weekly, so the relevant cells in columns A - D would need to automatically change when they're matching cells in column E - F change.

I hope this makes sense, as it's difficult to explain, but any help that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

I use IE 9 and receive a message at least 50 times a day that "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." In a few minutes it works again.

This is annoying. I have Windows 7, SP 1, if I'm right, (I've been wrong before about the Service Pack). I've had weird messages before and this is just another one.

To add to the list of Windows 7 problems I have, my digital camera won't transfer pictures to the computer anymore. This message says I need a device driver. I tried the compatibility route, but it didn't help. Probably this should go to another thread, though. Let me know and I'll do that right away. Thanks.

Answer:IE keeps "working incorrectly"

Hello welcome to TSF! I would recommend rebooting in safe mode with networking then see if the problem persists. To get into safe mode keep tapping F8 while you see your machine name splash screen. Select "Safe mode with Networking" Log in as normal then open IE and see if it shuts down on you.

Also can you post the make and model of your machine.

Hello Guys and Girls,

My wireless internet connections are currently set to a manually configured status, but this means I am having problems connecting to other wireless connections with free (ie unsecured) connections. I have tried going to properties and ticking the "Let Windows configure my wireless network settings", but I get a dialogue box coming up telling me that not all of my changes have been made.

Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Sukita

Answer:Solved: Changing wireless connection status from "Manually Configured" back to "Automatic"

Why don't we start with the make/model of the wireless router in use, as well as the wireless adapter or laptop brand. Also, what version and patch level of Windows do you use?

If you have XP-SP2, you can set the machine back to installation defaults using the following procedure.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

I have a chart in an Excel spreadsheet, and it has several "series" in it. Some of the series are charted as "lines", and some are "areas" that fill in the entire background of anything from 0 to the value I have entered.

I have one particular series that is showing up as an "area" but I want it to be drawn as a "line" instead, so it DOESN'T fill in the area below it. I currently have the "background" as "none", but now I have a line from the last value down to "0", and that's what I want to avoid...

Thanks in advance!

I recently built a call log database in Access 2007 for my team to use when calling agents on our top errors we see from a vendor's error report. My boss is requesting a report to see how many items have been resolved

I have a query started and I am trying to complete this task in a single query (if possible) instead of several queries (as I've done for a couple other things).

I have 3 tables I'm using: Assignment, AgtInfo and CallLog
Joins as follows: Assignment.st=AgtInfo.agcy_st
AgtInfo.agt_id=CallLog.agt_id

Fields in the results: Assignment.assigned_analyst, CallLog.rpt_mnth, CallLog.resolved

Resolved is a yes/no field. I've done a query that converts the -1 to a 1, so that the sum is a positive number for the "Yes" values. I'm not sure how to enter the expression to subract the "Yes" values from the total number of values (yes/no) to get to my "No" count.

Essentially, I'd like the results to display as:

assigned_analyst, rpt_mnth, CountYes_resolved, CountNo_resolved

Somehow the connection is just not clicking in my brain with everything I've read though searches. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Not a major issue, of course, purely cosmetic, but still a minor annoyance none-the-less:

I have a number of card reader drives that I never use (haven't even removed that plastic cover tape from them to help keep the dust out) that show when viewing the "Computer" window that displays drives. Is there any way to hide specific unused drivers from this view? Not remove drive entirely, of course, I may need to use one in the future, but just to hide them so they aren't visible, until I may chose to make them visible again?

Thanks as always,

Russell

Answer:Hiding unused "removable storage" devices from "Computer" folder

Hello Russell,

You could check Hide empty drives in the Computer folder in Folder Options to have them stay hidden until you insert a card. When a card is inserted, the drive will display in Computer.

Which one should I do? I originally wanted to just do "Return computer to factory condition" but Theog just suggested "Use A System Image Created Earlier." I have no idea what to do. So confusing!

Answer:"Return computer to factory condition" or "Use A System Image Crea..."

Hello M4TE and welcome to Seven Forums. Sorry for the delay in responding but I just came across your question.

Most newer manufactured computers have a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. The manufacturer provides specific instructions on how to access that partition in case you want to restore your machine to the exact condition it was in when it left the factory. That means you'd have to go through the time consuming process of cleaning out factory bloatware (like free trials of programs you'll never need), installing programs you do need, updating everything, creating your personal settings, etc. Here is a general idea of how to access the hidden recovery partition.

HP Recovery From Partition

Let's say it took you a day or two to set up your machine to your liking using the hidden recovery partition. A System Image is like a snapshot of your entire hard drive. It will include everything from the operating system to all your programs, files, photos, music, all updates ... everything. Most folks keep it on a separate external hard drive. Let's say a week later you get a virus or your machine crashes for some reason. You can use that System Image to return your machine to the exact condition it was in when you made the image. Usually takes about 30 minutes or so and you're back in business. It's a lot faster and more convenient to only worry about a week of updates compared to probably months with the hidden recovery partition. The newer a System Image is the... Read more

The most usual cause is that the Hard Drive is beginning to fail. Back up your stuff. Go to the website of the manufacturer and test the drive.

Problem:

Everything was running fine until yesterday, when my PC crashed with the BSOD giving me the "IRQL not less or equal" error. I ignored it and carried on- which resulted in the computer crashing with "Memory management" blues whenever I started something that was not the browser (It later started crashing on browser start too).

I first thought it was the temperature - Memtest95 and GPUtemp said otherwise.

So I started testing the RAM (taking one DIMM out) with Memtest86- It passed 4 cycles, so I shut the PC down and put the other DIMM in.

When I turned the PC on again, there was no signal sent to my screen, and none to my keyboard (and the HDD light on the front of the case did not start blinking like usual). The fans were running, so I figured something might be wrong with the DIMMs I put in. I removed the graphics card and plugged the screen into the motherboard.

Now the screen gets a signal, background lighting starts up, and then it shuts down to hibernation again. This repeats itself until the machine is shut down manually.

I got no idea what to do.

System specs: http://pastebin.com/DQwejZLx
I can not post the Minidump folder, since the PC can't start and I did not back it up. Sorry.

Thank you for your help.

whenever i clicked on a large video file in explorer (running xp sp2 on inspiron 6000), explorer would crash. i found a tip online to run "regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll" and that fixed the problem completely.

however, this fix created a new problem - - now all the info that used to be under "artist" or "album" is gone! any fix? "date modified" is still there, but i like to sort my mp3 folders by artist, and now it does me no good.

by the way, when i now click on an mp3's properties, summary tab, and go to advanced, all the artist/album info is missing from there too.

from doing a search, i see that the way to undo the original fix is to run "regsvr32 shmedia.dll", but then i think i will have errors with large avi's.

so, any other fix?

Hi TechGuy,

I'm having some recent problems on my laptop. When I log-in and start using it, the performance starts slowing down. When I look at the Task Manager, I notice that the task called Explorer.exe takes up a lot of my CPU. In a couple of minutes, I also start getting Internet Explorer windows to pop-up on my screen (I normally use Firefox) with advertisements suggesting that my computer is infected and some software downloads that could help. I recently installed McAfee Total Works, or whatever they call their 10-in-1 software which is supposed to do it all. I ran several scans, and on some of them, if did find and disable the Generic.dx trojan. Even though it claims it is doing something, I don't notice any changes - Explorer.exe continues to bog me down, and the IE windows keep popping up to the point that I cannot use my computer effectively anymore.

Any pointers would be truly appreciated!!

Thanks,

Greetings!

I have an XP machine which I only ever user myself (as in, there are no other users on the machine, no guest account, and it logs in without a password).

I'm trying to sort out my expansive and bloated Start Menu Programs list, but it seems that there are two separate lists. One for "Joe" (the main user account) and one for "all users", I guess because some programs give the option of installing for just one user or for everyone.

All of the programs show up in the Start Menu when I click on it, but when I go into Windows Explorer to try and sort them out, there are two separate folders;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Start Menu\Programs

I know I can move them around in these folders (ie; putting them in related groups, such as "system tools" etc), but can I move all of them from the main user to the "all users" folder, (or vice versa) without any problems?

Thanks!
~Joe

I added a slave drive to my Windows XP Pro computer, and it appears to work properly.

However, when I open the "Documents and Settings" folder (on the slave drive E:\, which is Windows XP Home Edition -- not XP Pro), I do not see any of my documents, sub-folders, etc. There should be MANY sub-folders (inside the "My Documents" folder which isn't even visible), with hundreds of documents, jpgs, etc. within it.

When that drive is installed as the Primary drive in my other computer, the User "Larry" (which is me) has all Administrative privileges. On the computer that I'm running now (with the slave drive in it), I also have Administrator privileges. I own both computers.

My User Name "Larry" is password-protected when I login to Windows (when the drive is Primary and installed into my main computer (not this computer with XP Pro).

I've tried clicking on all the users; Administrator, Default User, Larry, Guest, etc. (Note: I get an "Access Denied" error when clicking on the Guest "Documents and Settings" folder).

So, the questions are:

1. Why can't I see any files or subdirectories in the "Documents and Settings" folder on the slave drive?

2. There's supposed to be a folder named "My Documents," but I can't find it. Normally, that path is "C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents".

Hello, TSG!

Just yesterday I was using the computer normally until I got a Blue Screen. Getting a blue screen is usually something normal that occurs to my every so often, so I didn't mind it and rebooted the computer normally. However, I got two more blue screens within the next hour. The 3rd time rebooting, my computer starts to act strange as if it had a virus. Upon powering up the monitor would just display a black screen with two lines about something --- which I don't remember, sorry --- and stayed like that unless I plugged out the power cord or held on the power button to shut down. Then when after a few tries it boots and displays a message "Floppy Disk Failure" and "Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" (and the same message for Drives 2 and 3) show up. Also it asks me to continue loading by pressing the F1 Key.

When Windows loads the first time, it displays a message saying a bunch of hardware has just been installed and ready for use. Also, my internal clock resetted itself back to Monday, November 07, 2005 (Which, if I recall, is the date when I got the computer) and my speakers do not work.

TL;DR Version
3 blue screens within a short time
Floppy disk fail
Drivers 1-3 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1-3

Anyway, I browsed through Google but I haven't seen anyone with both problems. I disabled my Floppy Disk Drive and that message doesn't show up anymore, but the others do and my computer still isn't fixed. I ran a vir... Read more

Hi and THANKS for being there! This is primarily a term definition question. I don't find any clear answer in my user's guide.

I've got this terrific TV card installed, very fancy, very feature-rich.

I've got this terrific add-on AGP card installed, very fancy, very feature-rich. But I'm thinking that's beside the point. (It's a nVidia Geforce FX 5200)

This TV Tuner/Capture card dates back a ways; bought it for my old Windows Millennium machine and I remember that it worked just GREAT. It has the brand name "Brooktree" but that might just be the chipset or something. Anyway, I abandoned the TV add-on when I upgraded to a newer Windows XP machine in early 2007. I couldn't find the right driver though it worked pretty fairly with the old driver for most TV stations, it didn't work perfectly. I ditched it at the time.

I recently visited driverguide.com and searched diligently and finally did find a perfect driver for that TV card for XP. I am sure it is the latest and best driver available, so that is not even an issue.

Since I no longer subscribe to cable, I can use this old card to watch only channel 3, as output by my VCR. (The card also has FM radio, which works great!)

Here's the thing. A very itty-bitty teensy slight snag. When I initiate the TV Tuner, it always starts up in what they call "Preview mode". There is sound but no picture! No problem, I just tell it to go into the alternate mode, "... Read more

G'day all,

I am hoping someone may be able to tell me why my local folders appear under "The Internet" on one of our work computers rather than under "Local Network". We have four machines, 3 running XP Home and one running XP Pro. The front machine has XP Home on it and I cannot open any of the shared folders for this machine on any of the other three machines even though they all have the same workgroup name.

They are all connected via CAT5 cable and we have a Netcomm NB5 ADSL2 modem/router, a Netcomm V300 Telephone Adapter(VOIP)/modem and an 8 port switch in the boss's office. And the front computer's folder/s and drives that I have chosen to be shared are listed under "The Internet". Does anyone know why this is and how I would go about correcting it?

Thankyou for your help and time,

Aaron

Which is the better card, the "Sapphire Radeon 9800 Atlantis Pro 128MB" or the "PNY GeForce 6600GT 128MB"? I'm talking about the AGP versions. The 6600GT is about 10 more here in the UK. I had a faulty Radeon 9600XT so I'm looking for a new card. I will spend around 150 ($260). These 2 cards have caught my eye and I don't know which to choose. What would you get?

System: Acer Aspire one netbook.
Win XP home ed. SP3

Synopsis of issue:
Got this comp. from my company for a new line of work I started. Was "deep frozen" when I got it and was useless to me in that state. Got it thawed and it suddenly wanted to do loads of updates, so I let it. Apparently I was not careful enough & got the "XP antivirus 2012" malware.

Eventually conquered that beast and installed avira free. almost immediately avira picked up on the "html/infected win.gen2" malware. I quarantined, deleted, scanned comp. w. avira, rkill, & malwarebytes. all scans came up clean but I now have no connectivity. wired conn. continually tries to acquire network address and w.less has limited or no....

Not my router or modem as I have 2 home comps actively cnctd as I type this. Also tried multiple other networks w. same neg. results.

After loads of searching and t/s'ing I believe I have found the root of the problem: When I look under "services" I found that "netbios helper", "Network Location Awareness" & "dhcp client" are all not started.

Trying to start them results in failure b/c some "dependencies are marked for deletion". the afore-mentioned 3 things are dependent upon the Netbios over tcpip and tcpip protocol driver.

Those drivers are in the system32/drivers folder but I cannot find a "non plug and play" section in the device manager. Yes, I looked under ... Read more

Hello Gunnersfan13,

I do see the problem and I'll have to ask you to please stop any more action on your part to resolve this yourself or you'll make my job that much more difficult. :)

You are still very much infected with ZAccess. I need to see the dds.txt. (You posted, and attached, only the Attach.txt produced by dds.scr)

Run dds.scr again, and post the contents of the dds.txt.

Next, open Notepad and copy/paste the contents inside the quote box below, into Notepad.

Quote:

regedit /a afdexport.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\currentcontrolset\Services\AFD"
notepad afdexport.txt

Save this as afdexport.bat Choose to "Save type as - All Files"

Double click on the .bat file & allow it to run. Then post the log which it produces

Also, download SystemLook from one of the links below and transfer it to your desktop.

Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

Code:

Hi there,

I didn't really know how to google for this (although I did), so I didn't find anything proper and like to ask you: How do I remove the "labels" from drive types in "Computer" window? What I mean:
These labels above the different drives are really annoying, as I'm accustomed at one item after another and somehow one could change it to that view in every OS every since (XP, Vista), but now it doesn't seem to work? (I tried all the context menu items )

Any ideas? Thanks for your help in advance, much appreciated!

Kind regards

Just formatting an old PC HDD, it is in a caddy and is an old PATA disk.
When plugged in to my PC it always appeared as three seperate drives.
I have deleted and amalgamated these to a single volume, and am attempting to format NTFS.
After completing the wizard, I notice it's formatting as RAW.
Should I stop it....and how?
Can I make it format as NTFS?

Answer:"Computer Management" formatting disk as "RAW", how to force it to use NTFS?

It'll only show RAW when its not formatted

My son is going to take his old desktop to his school to let a specific group use it.
We do not want to 'just reformat' since it's an older Sony that had Me on it originally (yuck) and we installed XP. If anyone has ever done this w/ a Sony, then they know how time consuming it was: you have to d/l many programs, drivers, etc; install some before XP and some after. In short, it's a chore.

Therefore, I'd like to use some program(s) that will help me completely delete programs and files from the HDD. Obviously, I want to make sure none of the data deleted can be recovered if someone were to go playing around (most of these folks are not very computer savvy, but I don't want to leave it to too much chance).

You folks have always been the BEST help to me in the past, and I'm looking forward to more of the same :>... any suggestions for reliable (hopefully free!) software to do this?

Thanks in advance!
Maggie

I have run webroot antivirus with antispyware, several times. Every time I do, it finds the same virus (sometimes others with similar names). This is from the latest scan:

Mal/EncPk-CZ
Troj/FakeAle-FK

and some cookies. However often I quarantine them, they reappear on the next scan and I also can't get the desktop to go back to its normal appearance, it's gone white with a big warning (as above) and refers to:

win32/adware.virtumonde
win32/privacyremover.M64

having been detected on my computer.

I have gone through the 5 steps.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Nvidia geforce GTX460M, 1,5gb;
CPU: :Intel Core i7 - 740QM, 1,73 GHz; Ram = 8GB;

This laptop has not been the same since my wife, accidentally opened a zip file which was attached to an e-mail. I got the 1st BSOD whilst installing Nvidia drivers. After this I started getting random BSOD on shut down and start up. I uninstalled the Nvidia driver and restarted the laptop and noticed that it installed an older driver for Nvidia. It was okay for a couple of days , but then I got a BSOD boot loop, I then did a MBR repair which seemed to work for a couple of weeks. This past weekend my wife and I was on sites advertising cars that are for sale and used google maps to get to the different dealers. The laptop's power cable disconnected by accident, battery went flat during the night and when I restarted it , it initially showed a BSOD, restarted and since then I get this black screen of death. Hello all,

I've been recently experiencing a new issue, where the Windows (I'm running XP) "Critical Stop" tone sounds on the top of the hour, but it only does so the first hour that the computer is turned on. For example, the I turn on the PC at 12:35, the chime sounds once at 1:00, but not at 2, 3, etc.

This issue seems very similar to Tom K's "Windows XP Critical Stop Tone Sounding on Hour-Top" posted 01-04-09, 01:30, and I don't see a resolution to his.

The problem seems to have begun shortly after I had a malware infection on 1/13; I subsequently ran anti-virus (CA), MalwareBytes anti-malware, Spybot, and Ad-Aware, which appeared to clean up all the malware problems, except that this one issue began (in approx that timeframe) and still persists.

Any ideas? Thanks for any help you can provide... Greg

Sounds like a Windows Time, Windows Time service issue. Left click on clock in the task bar and check settings. Also check services in Administrative Tools, (or start run, services.msc) to ensure the Windows Time service is running, At the moment mine is set to manual, usually set it to automatic. Not sure what I have installed and caused the above problem. The internet connection or to be precise, the IE/Netscape Navigator is running very slowly even when the Network Receiving smooth data. i.e. the network connection from I see is running reasonably alright. But the loading page of IE or netscape doesn't seem to be right. And also, a lot of IE page when browsing, turn to "Blank Page"! The URL showed on the address bar is only "http://". It repeats the same thing when I clicked "Back" button.

Even when there's no any online programmes such as IE, messengers and downloading programme is running, the connection flow is still large. I suspect there might be some malwares or adwares running at the background which I can't find them by seeing "process" of "Ctrl-Alt-Del".

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1. I've noticed this strange behaviour where, after I have un-ticked "Enable write caching" for the main (only) drive in my laptop (Intel 240GB SSD) the setting keeps getting turned on again every time Windows wakes up from sleep. I turn if off again, and then it's on again after waking up.

What could be causing this, and is there another way (eg. group policy or registry setting) of forceably, permanently, disabling write caching? Or could this be some sort of driver issue? I wouldn't have thought turning a feature *off* would be a problem though.

Hello,

I'm a new poster here and I discovered the forum while searching for a solution to a problem that I am having with my Windows Security Center being turned off.

This is the last symptom of a problem that I noticed about a week ago. At that time my Google searches in Firefox were being hijacked to other sites on a pretty consistent, but not 100% basis. Google searches in other browsers, IE9 and Chrome still worked. Also my System Restore functions had been monkeyed with so they looked like that was not working (wouldn't open) but I could tell that it was actually working and the error message was spurious.

I was able to restore the Google search functionality in Firefox AND get system restore back by installing and running SUPERAntiSpyware. That program found several bits of malware and apparently fixed most/some of them. (Yes, I purchased a copy immediate--out of gratitude, if nothing else!). I also own a copy of Anti-MalwareBytes and ran that, but it found nothing.

I thought I was good to go, but today I noticed the little flag icon in the system tray was red X'd and I discovered the error message about the Security Center is turned off. I tried going to the service center and turn it on, but same error. I tried opening the list of services and there is none for Windows Security....so I'm assuming some malware has either removed or disabled the files in there.

As I mentioned I came here via Google search and read a long thread about a similar probl... Read more

Answer:Error message: "The Windows Security Center is Turned Off"

After posting my message above, I continued to Google around and found a page with directions about restarting the security service. I guess I'm not SUCH a "savvy PC user" after all, as I had missed the exact name of the service and I reported it missing above.

I re-enabled and then restarted it and it seems to be functioning again.

Thanks for anyone who read the entire message and my apologies for wasting your time if you did.

I have Windows 10 Pro.

I have Norton Internet Security Suite installed, so I don't need Windows Defender. But I keep getting a pop up saying "Windows Defender - This app is turned off by group policy."

How can I stop this pop up from, you know, popping up?

Thanks,
Ken

When I turn my Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop computer on I get the black screen that asks to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration or start windows normally. I've tried each of them and it always goes to the blue screen with the following: Stop: c0000218 Registry file failure The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\System or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable. Beginning dump of physical memory Physical memory dump complete. I have tried using my Windows Xp disc and it won't load. I don't have a recovery disc, but I used every disc that came with the computer and each time it goes back to the blue screen. Does anyone know how or if this can be repaired. If so, please give me simple step by step instructions.
Thanks for any help I can get!

Last winter I reformatted my HD and re-installed Windows 7 (64 bit).   At that time I lost my Flight simulator game that I enjoyed a lot.   Lately I tried to re-install my Flight Simulator game but I get the message "Error  InstallShield Runtime".  Is there a quick fix to this?

Answer:Cannot get past "Error InstalShield Scripting Runtime" When reinstalling game

What is the exact game you are installing to check on its compatibility? Is this an installation from Disc or a download off the internet?

Hi guys!

So i tried installing windows 7 Home Premium using an empty HDD. The old OS was Vista, and it was located in the same HDD. I managed to install Windows 7 successfully, but when booting after the install it crashed right after the "starting windows" screen. It then gives me the choise between starting the startup repair tool, or to start windows normally. When i run the startup repair tool it can not fix the problem. I've tried different HDD but the problem still persists. The fact that I haven't got a clue what to do really annoys me. In addition it isn't even my own pc. My dad's vista started failing on him. So I figured: Hey, why not install windows 7 using my old disk from a pc I don't use anymore. I appreciate all help.

Specs:

MB: ASUS P5N-D
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600(2.4 GHz)
GPU: XFX GeForce 9800 GTX
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint T166 250GB. (SATA 2)
RAM: Corsair Twin2X 6400 DDR2 (2048 Mb*2= 4096 Mb)
PSU: Corsair (550 W)

It was seperated in two parts. One with Vista in, and one for other files. I cleaned the whole thing, and deleted the part where Vista was located. I think it was seperated into one part with 208 Gigs and one with 25 gigs. The smallest with the OS in. The HDD works on my own computer.

Last night, I attempted to install a linux distro alongside 7, the installation failed, so I gave up and just rebooted to 7.

It got stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen, so I preformed hard shutdown and when to the "Startup Repair" utility and it attempted repairs, it then said that the repairs were unsuccessful, so I restarted and windows loaded to the desktop. Success! or so I thought...

After a while, I shut my laptop down and went to bed (as you do). When I needed to use it this morning, it wouldn't load past the "Starting Windows" screen again, so I shut it down and restarted and it went the desktop.

Answer:Occasionally wont load past "Starting Windows" screen

Hi,

Can you access the Advanced boot options?

Advanced Boot Options
Choose Last known Good Configuration

   Tip
Use the up-arrow and down-arrow keys to move the menu’s highlight to Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced), and then press Enter as the mouse won’t work at this screen.

Your computer should load successfully, and Windows 7 will discard the bad configuration and return permanently to the last known good configuration.

Alternatively:

Are you able to restore back to a point to before you tried to install linux distro?

System Restore

Cheers

Dave

I have been using Dragon Natural Speaking 12 Premium for many months and all was going well until last week when I downloaded and installed an update. After that, whenever I open the program from the desktop icon, the "Loading" screen appears but nothing happens after that. Also, I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Delete to end the program. (Right clicking on the tray icon and closing "close" does nothing. I have downloaded and used the DNS 12 uninstall "tool" several times and re-downloaded and installed the program, but the same thing happens, the program's "Loading" box appears but gets "stuck" there. I have asked the gurus at www.knowbrainer.com and on Nuance's Forums but they seem to be stumped with DNS's behavior after installing the update. Does anyone know what is happening? Thanks for any and all replies/suggestions.

My machine was working fine. I had been on it for a couple hours just doing regular internet browsing. I tried to open a program (EverQuest 2) and it would open then immediately crash "EverQuest 2 has encountered an error". So I figured, reboot the machine. After the POST, it tells me to either launch start up repair or start normally. I chose start normally. It would go to the "starting windows" screen and the logo will not show up. it just stays there.

Powered down, and after the POST got the same options again. I picked start up repair this time. It would load the bar and show "loading windows files" or whatnot and when the bar would get completely full, it would freeze there.

My computer doesnt have a CD/DVD drive, I installed Windows 7 from USB. So I plugged the USB drive back into the computer and tried booting from that. It would go thru the "loading windows files" just fine, I can see the drive flashing as its being accessed. When the bar filled up, it would progress to "Starting Windows" screen, and stop blinking and just sit there... doing nothing. Tried using Safe Mode. Wouldn't load either.

I have not a clue what I should be looking for to even start getting it working again. The only physical change I've made to the system was plugging in another monitor to my graphic card. And even then, I've shut down and rebooted and it's been just fine.

Any help, advice, or a point in the right direction would be... Read more
