Can I logoff other users w/o switching to their accts?

Question: Can I logoff other users w/o switching to their accts?

I have 3 kids that use my PC. Many times they leave themselves logged on with programs running. Is there a way that I can log them off without having to go into each account and logoff?

Preferred Solution: Can I logoff other users w/o switching to their accts?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can I logoff other users w/o switching to their accts?

Right-click an empty part of the TaskBar and select Task Manager. If you are an administrator, you will see the Users tab where all the currently logged in users are listed. Select the user you want to log off and click on the Logoff button. You will be prompted by Windows about losing their work. If it's okay to you, click on OK. WIndows should log the user off.

Hi , I recently added another user to my computer. Today I tried to take it off of my computer because when I turned it on this morning, it went to that other acct. and won't let me switch back to my acct. It also won't let me switch users when I try to log off. The switch user button doesn't even display. I've gone into the registry editor, but I'm not exactly sure on what to do without screwing things completely up. I'm hoping that I didn't lose all my files and folders. I guess the one good thing is that I did back up my entire system last week. "Any easy Suggestions ?

Two partners have folders/ files sorta scattered and mingled on WXP3 in original Admin account in ol' klunky desktop. Want to protect Admin and gather files from many different old folders into two new user accounts. I never made user accounts except once and got it all screwed up. How do I do this? If I ControlPanel make accounts, how do I then untangle all the files and get them in the right useraccounts? Do I as Admin have to do this, after making the two user accounts.... or what? Do the new users then go into Doc/Sett/DefaultUser... oh, i don't have a default user, that was my last computer..., do they just show up in AllUsers? or what? Also, some files we work on together, most separately... I suppose this is "file sharing"?? never did that either. We're on one computer, no 'domain', no network, etc...

Hello everyone, first post here.

So here's the pickle: I work in a hospital with a pretty big network. Till now our help desk computers were all Win XP and were recently upgraded to Win 7.

Now in Win XP if the help desk person wanted to remote logoff a user (which happens a lot as computers are sometimes locked by a certain user but must be released) they simply remote managed that computer and clicked properties -> shutdown -> logoff and that would do the trick. In Win 7 however there is no Shutdown in Remote Manage and it's no longer possible to do this.

I was going to create a batch file using shutdown.exe but it turns out the -l trigger of that command is limited and won't allow the usage of -m in the same command.

Any other ideas?

Answer:Remote Logoff Users?

You should be able to shut it down like that:

Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, and click Command Prompt.
Type shutdown /i to display the Remote Shutdown dialog box (Shutdown.exe).
Under Computers, click Add to enter computer names, or click Browse to open the Find Computers dialog box.
Under What do you want these computers to do, click Restart or Shut down.
Select the appropriate reason for the restart or shutdown from the list.

Hello,

The issue I have is my co-workers and I share a VM which we remote into, only one person needs access to it at a time. I have been searching for a way that I could set a script to run when I log on which would log off all other users on the system. I have tried to do it with a simple batch file but I couldn't figure out if that was possible with other users or it would only work with the user logged in.

I'm trying to do it by a script not using the task manager to log off users.

Any ideas on how I might be able to accomplish this?

Thank you,
LF4

Batch File to try and log off multiple users:

Code:
@echo off
rem Genereate a file and store each user name we want to log off in it.
set file=templist.txt
echo user1 >> %file%
echo user2 >> %file%
echo user3 >> %file%

rem Log off the users found in the file.
FOR /f %%i in (./%file%) do (
echo Logging off: %%i
rem
Shutdown /f /l %%i
)
rem Remove the temp file that stored the user names.
del %file%
pause

Answer:Logoff users with a script?

Here is a Vbs Script so paste it into notepad and call it *.vbs that logs others off imediatlyif you could get someone else to find out how to do it all the time just by looging it it would be great

Code:

Is there any way for an administrator to force a user to log off a locked workstation when Fast User Switching is disabled?

Answer:Administrator force logoff of locked workstation without Fast User Switching

I assume you've "disabled" Fast User Switching by the Group Policy Hide entry points for Fast User Switching.
Very good question.  There is certainly no way at the "locked" screen to enter an alternate user or force a logoff.
I suppose you could connect in remotely via RDP, or maybe (if you want to get tricky) schedule a SHUTDOWN /L command to run via remote connection to the Task Scheduler (e.g., via MMC).
It's occurred to me that the above policy change isn't really disabling Fast User Switching at all, but just the points of control.  What is it you're specifically trying to protect against by "disabling" Fast User Switching?

I created a simple bat file in the user logoff scripts directory to copy a users outlook.pst file which resides locally on the pc onto a personal drive letter on the server at logoff. It seems to work fine when logged in as a domain admin. A 100 meg pst file is copied within a minute or so. But when they are logged in as domain user then the log off takes considerably longer.
Offline file syncronization at logoff works fine and no delay in that. It just seems to be an issue with backing up the file at logoff.
No errors being reported in event viewer.
Just taking too long to logoff for domain users.
Fishing for some clues...or a better alternative.

Do you have limits on the size of the users .pst files? I've seen some that if not watched can easily hit the 1 gig or better range.

Hey everyone.

We've been experimenting with running a batch script to backup incremental files for users within our domain. We've found that, when the script is run using an Admin account, or by adding the local user to the Admin's group, the script will kick off and run as it should during the Log Off phase.
However, due to security issues, we cannot have all the users having full administration credentials on the systems, so we cannot go down this path.

The Local user account, when the batch script is run manually, runs, and back's up the files as it should. But on Log off, the script doesn't even run, within the log files, there is an Access Denied 5 error 0x0000005.

Now, whilst I can tell this is user permissions error, I've fiddled around with configurations and settings on the local device, the target device on the network and even user accounts, yet, I cannot seem to get this script to execute, as it should, on Logoff, using a standard user account.

Folder permissions are all setup so that the users can read/write and there is no issues with either, as the script will run manually with no output errors and all files successfully copy over.

I am absolutely stumped at the moment, as everything I have tried, does not seem to solve the issue. Only using admin credentials seems to work and due to policies, we cannot allow the users to have Admin rights.

I'm assuming I've missed something simple, so if anyone could point me in the right direction, that wo... Read more

I've Windows 7 Pro, and I've got the screensaver setup to auto logoff(it doesn't actually log off, just goes back to the login screen, but not sure what else to call it. Right now, when it logs off, it only shows the current user. You have to click on switch user to see the other users on the computer. I'm pretty sure I've seen it done on other computers where when it auto logs off, it displays the screen with all users instead of just the one. How can I get mine to do this?

Answer:How do I modify the auto logoff to show all users?

After researching, it appears that what I want to do is cause the screensaver logoff to go to the switch user screen, rather than the locked user screen.

Hi guy's just wondering if it's possible to get windows 7 to switch audio drivers when you switch to another user account.

For eg.. normal speakers device for my personal account and then have my multichannel device (profire 2626) set as default for my other user account 4 studio work.

Atm, if i change it on one account it changes on the other account which is annoying and i'd just like to set default device for each account so i don't have to do this.

Thx

Hi Geeks,

Have just recovered from nasty virus attack (Thanks TimW in Malware). Am trying to be a good little computer user and set up a non-admin account to surf web to help reduce future problems.

My normal HP_Admin account boots, runs and logs off okay. I can either Log Off or Switch User to one of my kids' non-admin accounts just fine. However, upon exiting their accounts, the logoff process tells me that it is saving user settings, then goes to a black screen. Same thing happens when I now setup a new user non-admin account for web surfing etc. Event logs give me same Userenv event ID's 1517 and 1524 for all accounts that attempt to logoff. At some point in past (seems to me to be b4 we ran CCleaner and various malware removal utilities) that logoffs and switch users were fine) but I am not confident of that reply because kids usually just share my account. We have also in last 6 month enabled networking settings for wireless laptop networking with this desktop ... I mention that because one of messages seemed to have to do with roaming accounts - perhaps we have a setting wrong somewhere?

thanks for any help,

Okay so I have a computer that three people use, so we have profiles. I'm usually downloading things and when they log off, this is terminated. I'd like to be able to have it so they can go on the computer and I can keep downloading. So the feature I'm looking for is switch users. The problem is; It's not anywhere in sight. I was using the classic theme for both the icons of folders, and the start menu (all programs in stead of programs, etc). I would be fine with switching to the default look if it enabled me to switch users.

I just realized that I can't even change the look back to default. Can anyone help with either problem? (changing back to the default look, and being able to switch users)

Here are possible things that I've done:
Start>Shut Down> Than from here there is Log off, Restart, Shutdown, Standby. No switch.

When I try to go back to the default view I do this.
Right Click on Start>Properties> The option should be here but it's not.

Answer:Switching users... Can't do it.

Is "Use Fast User Switching" checkmarked in the User account under control panel?? If it's on..you should get the "Switch User" listed when you click Start..Log Off. There is also a registry tweak that will keep your internet connection active while switching users. Do so at your own risk as you will be editing and adding a value to the registry.

Here's how if you want to attempt.

1. Click Start, click Run and type REGEDIT and hit Enter (or click OK)
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/ CurrentVersion/Winlogon
3. Right-click an empty space in the right-hand pane, and from the menu
Select New > String value
4. Name the new value KeepRASConnections (it's important that you use upper and lower-case letters exactly as shown)
5. Right-click the KeepRASConnections value, and choose Modify from the menu
6. Enter 1 as the Value data
7. Close the registry editor
8. Restart Windows for the changes to take effect

Question: switching users

Ihave a problem swith between account users.

when i first log on everything is fine and logging off is o.k. the problem arises when you log onto a new user and try to log off. It wont let you log off.

The only way is by using ctrl, alt, del and manually logging off.

I have recently installed a wireless internet connection and with the connection being on all the time i wondered if that might be the problem.

I disconnected the connection and everything worked as normal.

Is there a way that you can stay online while switching between users?

Any help would be greatly apreciated....Many Thanks

Try enabling fast user switching, if you haven't already done so. I don't know if this will fix it, but it's worth a shot. Or if it's enabled try disabling it.

I have a dell dimension C 21 pc with windows XP home edition service pack 2 which I have had for some months now. I have the free edition of AVG. We are 2 users, I am the main user and my partner is the second user. A problem frequently arises when he switches to his"area" in that an AVG box comes up for updating but then freezes . He then tries to shut it down gets the message "this program is not responding click on end or cancel" so we can't get rid of it.

I would probably try uninstalling and then reinstalling AVG to see if that fixes the problem.

I've been having a problem where when I switch users from another account and start using iTunes, it keeps playing the error/prompt sound that I hear for the other account. Hi,

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I did a search and could not find anything related to the problem I'm experiencing.

I have an XP box with SP2, and have created several accounts for my family. I've found that often when I try to log off a family member and log on as myself that the pc freezes. It seems to be ok at first because it expands my name once I click on it, but very shortly will do nothing and I have to press reset.

Does anyone know what that might be? Thank you in advance for your time.

I am trying to find out how to keep my Broadband connection active when I switch users. I have 4 accts. on my computer, one for each family member. Whenever I switch accts, my Broadband connection shuts down. You can start it up again after the switch with no problem. I would prefer, however, to have it stay connected during the switch, as this would just make my life easier. For instance all users connect to the same torrent software, and I have the files for it synced. So, no matter who is logged in, the torrent info is the same. When the connection drops, the torrent software has to reload all the DHT info. I have googled this, to no avail. I assume it is a matter of where the BB Modem Drivers are installed?? Or maybe a Registry tweak. At any rate, I am at a loss as to how to do it, but I am sure it can be done. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciatedClick to expand...

Two problems :
1. With W7, as say User 1, I could listen to music or BBC radio via the internet. If I switched to User 2, the music or radio opened as User 1 would continue to play and be heard as User 2. With W10, switching users cuts out any music or radio opened as User 1. Are the listening features under W7 available under W10?
2. With W7, I could copy from documents or spreadsheets opened under User 1 and paste into documents of spreadsheets as User 2. This feature does not work in W10. Can this be fixed?
Thanks

For some reason, if I log on to my account (an administrator account), then log off, none of the other users (my husband's admin. account or the kids' limited user accts) can be signed on. XP sits on the welcome screen for an unusually long time, then goes to just the user's wallpaper screen (no icons, no taskbar, nothing). Can't pull up task manager or warm boot, have to shut down & restart. I can log on any of the other accounts, and log off, and switch to mine, but not vice versa. Even if I don't do ANYTHING after signing on. So, the problems seems to be with my account settings somehow.

This is a new problem -- actually, my husband (who notices it most, because I use the PC most of the time, and then when he tries to get on at night, can't) says it was happening itermittantly, but now happens every time.

Any ideas?

TIA,
M

The only way I've handled this is to just log off when I'm done and the next person can log on "cleanly".  Any ideas as to what is causing it to get stuck?  This just started about 3 days ago.Appreciate any input.Thanks.

I've had this problem for a long time now. Every once in a while I will set out on a google quest to find the answer but I haven't succeded yet

The problem is that whenever I "switch user" (win + L) out of my account for someone else to log on their account, when they try logging off, my monitor acts like if I was putting the computer into sleep mode. That is, it goes black and some messages come up on the screen saying the usual "check power etc" messages and the light flashes. The computer continues to run and there is no way of restoring my screen so I am forced to press the main power button on the computer tower.

I am running windows xp professional sp 2
My video card is nvidia geforce fx 5500
Pentium 4 3.00GHz
1BG RAM
I run zone alarm and AVG in the background

I have not always had this problem. I don't remember when it started but it has been a long time now (I would say at least 6 months.)

Appreciate any suggestions or information...

I have been working on a friend's PC -- an hp pavilion (a527x) that's running WinXP-SP2. I just spent days cleaning all the spyware off of it, & finally got an OK from Chaslang that it was clean! Cannot get anything else to come up on the monitor then, & haven't had any trouble with the monitor or any other hardware up to this point. I turned off "hibernate", etc...in "Power Options" in the Control Panel. Any ideas here as to the cause? PC is running fine otherwise. Although can't seem to get MyWayWebSearch spyware off of it. I Am running Win7 64 bit. Whenever I switch user accounts the computer will start the switch and then lock up with a display message that says no signal on the monitor. It happens if the computer has been running for hours or only a couple of minutes. I have to shut the PC off and leave it off for 20-30 minutes. I can then restart and enter any user account. But if I try to switch user or logoff and pick a different user the whole cycle begins anew. Can anyone here help me?

Answer:Switching Users Problems

No signal to the monitor seems more like a graphics problem. Check and make sure your drivers are up to date. Also, run scannow system file checker. That will check the system files. See if either of these help.

Hey guys, recent problem here with switching usernames. There's three accounts on my computer, all with no passwords. About three weeks ago a strange thing has been happening: the first time you start your computer and log into one of the three accounts, it'll log you in no problem. Then, when you go and switch users, it will prompt for a password that was never created, and won't let you log in. So I restarted the computer, and then I put some simple passwords on the accounts, thinking it would work. Well, the same thing happened. The first time you log in after a bootup it works, but then you get locked out again once you try switching users again.

This is where it gets even stranger. The problem stopped, you could switch users fine. "Alright!" I said, "it's finally over."

I was wrong, once you restart the computer it went back to locking me out. I'm so confused about this, and it's really frustrating. I've tried virus scans and there appears to be no problems with anything like that. I really need some assistance here.

Answer:Problem With Switching Users.

Try going to users in the control panel and click on switch the way users log on or off.

Whichever way you have it set, change to the other.

After you do that reboot, then go back to users and switch back.

You know the sound that the computer makes when you click on start-> Log Off -> Switch User? It's a specific sound like when you turn off your computer or when you restart your computer, or when you log in to your computer. That "Windows" sound. Well for me, that sound has disapeared everytime switch users. My normal sound is okay, and the log off/log in sounds are still there, but for some strange reason, my Switch User sound is gone. I was just wondering what caused this, it's not really a big deal, but I am just curious as to what happened.

Answer:Switching Users Sound

Don't know why it stopped, unless some one disabled it or deleted the file.
You can reset/select the sound you want here:
Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices
Sounds Tab
Last two items under the Windows section are Windows Logoff and Windows Logon
Files are usually in the Windows\Media folder:
Windows XP Logoff Sound.wav
Windows XP Logon Sound.wav

I have set up 2 users; 1 as administrator (me) and 1 for my wife. It is a home computer and we do not require password protection. I am the normal user and have managed to set up so that I login within having to enter password.
However when my wife uses the computer the Start-up screen is me and my wife has to switch user. When she does this she has to enter her her password.
Is it possible to set-up so that she can simply switch user without her passport

Answer:Switching Users without password

Hello Polterry, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since you have more than one user account on the computer, you might consider using the tutorial below to set to always show all users at sign in instead of the last user. Since you do not have a password, it would sign in to your account automatically if you were the last one that signed out. Having it set to all users, will instead have the sign in screen show with all user accounts to select to sign in without having to switch user.

Sign in - Show All Users or Last User in Windows 8
If your wife doesn't have a password, she should be able to just select her account to sign in.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I use to be able to switch users on AOL and see how many e-mails each user had, along with their sign on names. Now working with Windows 7 and I can't see all my AOL usernames. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Answer:Switching users to sign in to AOL

Take off the training wheels, drop AOL and really use the internet. Your ISP can offer you a number of email accounts, or you can use gmail, yahoo, or other free email accounts out there. No one really needs AOL anymore. When AOL was first around, the pure internet was scary for many so AOL put in place simple controls and hid much of went on behind. Long before even XP came around the internet and browsers became more friendly (as long as you had a good antivirus program) and easier to use, basically making AOL obsolete. Today, there is really no reason to use it any longer. Try it with Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or others. Email accounts can be web based where you log in through your browser similar to the way you probably do today, or one that uses an email client like Outlook, Windows Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird to name a few where you open your email program and it downloads your emails for you and you keep them on your computer. Thunderbird has options for independent multiple email accounts as well as multiple accounts that feed into a single inbox. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hello, i recently removed a virus with the help of one of the mods of this forum by using combofix, my computer sped up greatly but now i find when i try to switch users it takes from around at the minimum 5 minutes to switch and the max around 8 or 9 mins.

I am using windows Vista Business, 2.6Ghz Core 2 Duo Processor and a sufficient amount of ram (in my opinion anyways - 3gigabyte ram).

Could i have some help in solving this issue and trying to get it back to its normal 5-15 seconds user switch? The waiting time can get tedious when i switch users and its really annoying!

Help would be great appreciated!

Got a problem that I have not encountered before. My little used Compaq Presario died again so I pulled the hard drive out and disposed of the carcass. Then I picked up a P3 lease return w/o a drive in it. I put my drive in and started it up. Windows wouldn't load...said some dll was missing. I figured if one was corrupted there were probable others and just reinstalled XP Pro over it. I can't do a clean install because I have no way to back up any data on my drive just yet.

Anyway, this is not the first time I have installed XP but this time, when we attempted to switch between users, it asked for a password and would not go any further. Naturally, I did not have any passwords set up at that point. In order to switch users, we have to reboot the system. That pretty much defeats the purpose of being able to switch back and forth between users so I would really like to get this fixed.

I checked under CtrlPanel>Power>Advanced and found that Fast Switching was enabled and there was a check mark beside 'Prompt for Password". I removed the check mark but it didn't change anything, it still wants a password to get in.

My XP Pro does not yet have SP2 on it. I do not know any specs for this computer either. And I find that the drive was loaded with bugs and hidden goodies. I reinstalled AdAware and Spybot, updated and then ran them both. AdAware found over 500 items to get rid off and Spybot took over an hour to run. I do not kno... Read more

I am trying to set up my computer so that my wife can use it, but not have access to all my files and programs etc...

I have created her user account, but whenever i try and switch users it hangs at a Red screen, sometimes with a box saying "Applying personal setting Internet Explorer 6".

What am i doing wrong? Do i have to log my account off first before switching over?

Answer:Problems switching users

Well, I think it is because of the available memory on your computer. What are your computer's specs?

Try logging off your account, and then signing into hers. If it's the first time she's signing in, it can take a long time for all the new user settings to be created.ie. the internet explorer 6 is being installed... leave it alone for like 10-30min and see what happens.

Removable HD 500 GIG IDE

Windows XP Pro SP2

With the exception of the removable 500 GIG hard drive, sound card and Ethernet card all the hardware is new.

The computer had been running slow. So, when I installed my new 1 tb drive, I reinstalled XP and all my software from scratch. Only data was restored from my system backup.

The title really says it all. I had been having problems with my USB mouse. To fix this I have uninstalled the mouse driver and let it reinstall itself at the next boot-up. So far so good. Time will tell whether this has actually worked. However, my previous problem with the computer freezing up while switching user still persists. The freeze usually happens while switching from a user account to the welcome screen.

the only other significant thing I can think of is what when I installed XP on my new HD. As soon as I went to open Internet Explorer, and before anything else was installed or restored, I received the customary message that explorer had encountered a problem and had to shut down!

So, I really don't know what to do next. Thanks for any ideas.

Hey Again guys ^^

I'm having a major problem with my Wireless Internet,
If I want to download something overnight, whilst a friend or someone else is using the PC, I would usually switch users (Back when i was cable to router), but Now that I'm wireless, everytime I switch users the Internet cuts out, then reconnects on the other user, which stops my downloads from going ahead.

Is there any way to disable this feature? I've tried disabling the power saving check boxes and etc, but nothing so far.

Please help tech guys!
JP.

Hello all
Recently my desktop, a Gateway FX6710 with a Radeon HD 4800 Graphics card (card is fairly new, about a year)  has an issue of the screen going black for several seconds when switching Users. My graphics drivers ARE up to date. I am running Win 7 64 bit. This has just started happening recently (about a week I guess)
If someone can give me some trouble shooting steps I would much appreciate it
I have 8 gigs of ram installed

Thanks in advance!

Tom

Answer:Black screen when switching users

Try running System File Checker ( sfc /scannow ) it will try to replace any missing or corrupt files. Open an elevated command prompt Run as Administrator copy and paste the above in the command prompt windoe and hit enter and allow it to run.

Have only had Win XP for a fortnight and after trying to move the other "User" Account's My Documents to another partition a couple of error messages now appear when the other user logs in. They are:

failure: openscmanager and

chipset not supported.

Thinking that it was related to my fiddling I reformatted the C: drive and reinstalled Win XP but the error messages still occur. They also occur in the Guest account as well but not my account (administrator).

Would anyone have any idea how to fix this please?

My computer will go to sleep for being idle, I bring it back to life and that user is still open, all of a sudden things start randomly open such as 90 instances of internet explorer (1 at a time and I can't stop it and never clicked on it in the first place), or my sidebar will open 109 calenders and so on. I cant stop this from happening. Also, sometimes when I switch users my monitor all of a sudden goes blank, says no input, and goes to sleep. I wake it up and it says no input detected and goes back asleep. The computer is still on but I have to reset it to bring the monitor back on.

Answer:Switching users causes my system go haywire!

Try logging off ALL users and restart your machine. It appears that when you use "Switch user" there are several copies of the different accounts.

I never use "Switch user" and always use log off, it takes a little more time, but a lot less issues. This applies to ALL OS's not just Vista.

Hi there.
I am encountering a problem on my home computer for which there are three users. When you switch from one user to the other using "Switch User" instead of "Log Off" it's fine the first time around. However, when you switch back to the original user in the same way, my monitor displays an error message, telling me: "Digital out of Range" and gives me some other numbers.
Any ideas?

Anyone else had Vista (Home Premium) falling over when switching between users? Three in the family have accounts or profiles on the same PC - sometimes it takes for ages to switch - other times it is fine - other times it crashes. Windows tries to find an online solution each time it crashes but comes up with no answer. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks
