Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z vs Maximus VII Hero

Question: Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z vs Maximus VII Hero

Thinking of making the big switch from years of AMD gaming rigs to INTEL.
Currently am using a crosshair v formula z mobo with an fx 8150 cpu, and was going for a maximus vii hero mobo with an i7 4790k cpu.

Is this a worthwhile upgrade?
Is the maximus mobo inferior to my formula v?
I know the intel cpu is vastly better than the amd, but would I see a big improvement in my gaming?
Would I be able to use my 16gb 1600mhz corsair vengeance ram?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
(My gpu is an gtx 780oc 6gb version

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Maximus VI Hero or Maximus VI Formula

What motherboard has more features and is most worth it

I will be using 2 GPUS and overclocking the haswell i7 4770K

Answer:Maximus VI Hero or Maximus VI Formula

I'm almost certain the Hero will do everything you want to do, so are the extras worth $80 more? The Formula looks better, has an extra PCI Express 3.0 slot, and a little better onboard audio(not that you'll be able to notice the difference between the Formula and the Hero audio).

There are 4 USB 2 connectors in the rear IO panel. There's a 10 pin header that is probably intended for a front panel USB 2 connector. There's reference in the spec for two "mid board" USB 2 connectors, but I don't know what that means.

While there is no guarantee that a USB 2 device will work in a USB 3 port, I have never had one fail to work.

If you really need more USB 2 connector, you could buy a hub. You can get external and front panel ones. Passive and powered.

I'm wondering if somebody has the same issue that I started experiencing with my newly built system.
The motherboard (ASUS Crosshair VI Hero) has a serious issue with USB ports. It has already been replaced and the same issue is with the second one, so it's not that a particular one was broken. ALL (2.0 and 3.0) USB ports on the back plane drop (disappear from the OS) while running a backup to an external USB 3.0 drive. I also lose the manageability, because USB mouse and keyboard are connected to USB 2.0 port. A reboot (warm boot) is required to restore USB ports functionality. There are tons of errors in the event log when that happens, like event id 157, 140, 51. I also keep having event id 153 while imaging partitions to an external USB 3.0 drive (different one than for backups), however USB ports don't disappear during that. All of those external USB drives were working just fine attached to my old system. This is the newest version of Windows 10 (1703 Creators Edition) while the old system was running version 1607.
I wonder if this may be a design issue. There are obviously at least 2 different controllers involved (2.0 and 3.0), so it's strange that all of the USB ports suddenly disappear. If it was just USB 3.0 ports, then it could be a controller or driver issue (no blue screen here), but if the load on one USB 3.0 port makes also USB 2.0 ports disappear, then I'm wondering if I need to get a different motherboard and forget about ASUS?
This is consistent and lik... Read more

I have an Asus Maximus VII Hero Motherboard that has a feature called KeyBot.

With a USB keyboard plugged into the correct USB port on the motherboard, you are meant to be able to press Del and boot straight to UEFI BIOS.

This feature used to work and the lights on my keyboard (for num lock etc) used to remain on when the system was shutdown.

This is no longer working and the lights are all off when shutdown.
The only thing I can think of is that this feature may have stopped working after updating to the latest BIOS version (3103).

I updated the BIOS due to another issue I was having (which solved it) so I don't really want to roll back just to get KeyBot working.

What do you suggest? Should I roll back and check if Keybot then works and contact Asus informing them of the issue I'm having, or is there something else I can try?

Since a couple of weeks my son is having continous BSODs with CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT on his Gaming PC which is about 3 years old which worked very stable until then.
We have reset the mainboard settings to default (no overclocking) and also done a fresh install of Windows 10 which is now a version from early December. Also we've flashed the latest BIOS from Asus.
The system runs fine as long as there is no system load. When he puts load on it (or when running Prime 95), the BSOD happens very quickly.
I've also run Prime 95 in Safe Mode and there it ran smoothly for 2 hours. When running in normal Windows mode, it crashes after a few seconds / no longer than 2 minutes after start.
System Config is here:

Can you follow these instructions - ? No need to create a new topic by the way (referring to step 3) — you already have one here.
I'm quite certain that there's a hardware fault with the CPU. When you run Prime95 how hot does the CPU get? To debug a 0x101 we typically need a full dump rather than a minidump, but there may be no point obtaining one in your case...
BTW did you turn on Driver Verifier?

Same as topic. Wondering if the Hero was worth the extra 50 bucks or so in terms of reliability, features, etc. Reliability is a big factor for me so if you think Hero is a bit more stable for the extra 50$ then please let me know. Thank you!

P.s. In case you were wondering I am building a gaming/video editing pc for around 1500 bucks

Answer:Asus Maximus VI Hero or Asus Z87-A LGA 1150

The Maximus VI Hero is no more stable than the Z87-A. The Maximus is more gamer oriented due to its overclocking features (which the Z87-A has, but not to that extent). If you can get a Z87 Sabertooth, that is probably the best in terms of reliability because it protects the components from dust.

Any tips on installing chipset drivers? I ran the .exe, everything appeared to go w/o a hitch, but the driver version is still the old one. Tried manually updating drivers in device manager, but no go Auto/ Manual... Tried safemode, but get an error running the .exe. The ME and audio drivers updated fine, but the chipset drivers are being a PITA. I hate Win 10 btw.
Am I suppose to remove everything under System Devices and hope idiot Win 10 doesn't simply reinstall the old drivers?

Good day to all!

I am purchasing a ASUS Crosshair IV Formula next week, however I have one question I am unsure of.

I am not a fan of integrated audio in the least. I want to run a soundcard on this board, but if I am correct, it is my understanding there is no PCI slots at 1X. Will I still be able to run a soundcard on this board, or not?

I only intend to run one video card for now, as I simply have no use for 2 powerful cards.

Answer:Asus Crosshair IV Formula

The board has 4 PCI-E x16 slots and 2 PCI slots.

PCI-E x1 devices should work fine on any PCI-E x1 / x4 / x8 / x16 slot.

So I recently upgraded my PC. Since I like to stick with AMD (I Know, I know), I went with the ASUS Crosshair III and AMD 965 3.4GHz.

Now, the board is great, it's stable, and good lord its got a LOT of overclocking features.

Problem is - their website barely works, so I spend more time downloading drivers then anything. The "LCD Poster" thing doesn't even light up or come remotely close to working even with it disabled in BIOS, the software CD doesn't support Windows Vista 7 x64 (I had to put support to Windows XP). Almost all the software just crashes.

The soundcard it comes with is a big joke. After owning a Creative X-Fi, this Creative has no software support FROM creative it's all from Asus. Basically, there is no support. I only get like two options, no "gaming" options. And good luck finding the drivers It's a "SupremeFX X-Fi Audio Card "

Is it compatible? If so what am I doing wrong that I am getting such low results? Thank you for your input

Answer:My ASUS Crosshair V Formula's RAM Isn't Working! PLZ HELP!

Triple channel is for some Intel stuff, AMD goes to Double Channel only but i don't think that is the problem here. Those 535MHz you have to multiply by 2 so actually you are running memory at 1070 MHz (DDR = Double Data Rate). You'll have to adjust memory from the BIOS. Chances are you are not going to get all of the 2000MHz out of them but 1600 and even 1866 should be just fine.

Before I upgrade my Windows 8 to 10 on this motherboard and use up one of my last valid Windows 10 licenses, how is this board under Windows 10? I don't plan on buying a new PC for a while and that might be past Microsoft's free upgrade period. I'm particularly concerned with the on-board audio and how well it works under Win10. I do have a Xonar DGX card that I could try but I just got it and I could return it if the on-board audio works fine.

AMD Users Only... (Intel fanboys take yer arse's home. :P)

So I'm waiting on delivery for my new motherboard (ASUS Crosshair V Formula-Z AM3+, AMD 990 chipset) as my current ASUS Crosshair IV Formula AM3 has gone bad. I'd like some reviews from users who have some good knowledge on the V Formula-Z to give me some pointers. Is it good? Is it better than the IV Formula in the sense of sound and overall performance and durability? I've read and heard that the AM3+ boards are backward compatible with AM3 CPUs (such as my Phenom II X6) (though I am aware that the AM3 motherboards just aren't compatible with AM3+ CPUs)

I'd like to make a discussion on this specific motherboard.

Note: Again, I do not want Intel users posting in here saying "get rid of AMD and get Intel" or "Intel is better than AMD". I don't care for those critics. I'm an AMD user, enough said.

Hey gang,
I figured there may be a few of these purchased by TS members so Thought I would give a heads up. I read about the PWR/NB/SB heatpipe/heatsink assembly standoffs being the incorrect height and not allowing full contact to the chipsets. I checked mine out of the box and indeed it was the case of the one I purchased 7/16 or so. Many are getting them this way and filing, grinding, or milling them down. I milled them down .0625 inch and it left a flush Thermal compound pattern. you do not have to be hyper precise as the screws from the back of the MB are spring resisted, but you do need to take enough off. I would suggest at least checking this before assembly if only to replace the deplorable thermal pad they put on it from the factory. The difference for the boards with the bad standoffs and the correct ones (or fixed) is around 35C.

Just bought all new hardware for a gaming PC, The problem is when i switch my power supply on, the computer starts up and runs for about 3 seconds then shuts off. also if i reset the cmos in the back the computer will do the same thing again. note this is without me even pressing the power button the case. After the power off the start and reset button are still lit up and the red led's on the motherboard are still lit. I have also tried unplugging all hardware to the mobo just to see if it will boot up, not matter what hardware is connected it will still do the same thing.

Are all of these connections seated fully? Some say you only have to plug in the 8-pin at the top, but you might need the 8-pin and 4-pin as well.

Good afternoon,
I am going to try and keep this short. Getting code 55 "memory not inserted" trying to get to bios without a gpu which is coming later. PC Build:

Motherboard: Asus Maximus VIII Formula
RAM: Corsair Dominator 16GB 2X8gb DDR4

SSD: 850 pro 2TB

Cpu liquid cooler: NZXT kraken x61
Cpu: Intel i7 6700K

I have tried different ram slots, same code. When the code is present the system shuts down shortly after. Without RAM the code is 53 (no memory inserted) which tells me that the motherboard might not be the issue. The ram I have is not on the QVL but it shouldn't be a problem. Hi there, strange I never knew about this forum yet it's users have fixed around 3 problems for me in the last 2 or so weeks. And now I need your expert advice!:

Okay so I have a ASUS Crosshair II Formula Build, with Sata 250GB HDD, Crappy Q-Tek 500W PSU, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800 2.51Ghz,, Dvd-rw and Cdr drive but I have no sound! I've heard about the amazing SupremeFX II sound card, however I only want to be able to hear the odd bit of music/youtube video's, I don't want to spend 70+ for superb quality sound.

I brought a rubbish 10 C-Media CMI8738/MX not even knowing weather it'd work or not, but i assumed the mobo would have standard PCI solts, which it did. The first time round it worked but the sound was soooooooooooooooo quiet you wouldn't believe it, even with all volume options maxed out, and strangly the S/ATA drivers for my HDD kwpt on saying they wern't installed, So I system restored and tried again a few days laters, now the desktop wouldn't even boot, the LCD poster just hung at "PCI Int" so my questions are:

Is that sound card imcompatible with the mainboard? if not.....

How can I get the desktop to boot so that I can install the latest C-Media drivers from they official site?

If the sound card is really that awful then can anybody recommend a cheap 30- sound card that'll work?

Thanks in adviance

Answer:Need help picking up a cheap sound card for Asus Crosshair II Formula

You should be able to use any PCI or PCIe 1x sound card if you have an available corresponding slot. If you're looking for a really cheap card try searching around for an Audigy 4. They are decent-sounding cards and offer a good variety of audio features. If you're still thinking that's too much, you could probably find a Creative Audigy 2 ZS for even less money, or go with a different brand like Turtle beach.

I have found some bits that sound like my issue, but none that fix it.

It seems that I have had issues ever since the KB3133977 update. For some reason I never saw anything related to it, and ended up reinstalling Windows, or somehow recovering with a chkdsk in dos. My most recent incident is still active and I can't manage to get around it. Here is what I have done;

Freshly formatted Seagate 2TB drive with Windows 7 64 bit installed, got past the update problem and had all updates done and computer working smoothly. Started getting some things that I like installed. Mostly games. Was able to use all of them with no apparent issues.

The last thing I did before it all went downhill was to install Adobe Creative Suite 4. Seems like I used Photoshop one or two times before I shut the pc off one night. The next morning it kept trying to repair itself. Booting from my DVD tends to tell me that the disk is not compatible with that version of Windows. I was able to run chkdsk /f/r. That took about 6 hours, but completed without anything tragic.

For the last couple of days I have been wrestling with this UEFI/BIOS issue, thinking that might be the answer. I have tried just about every setting. Some settings boot and say Operating System Missing, while others boot once, reset and got to system repair. I would love to remove the KB3133977 update, but since the OS will not start, I'm not able to do that in a traditional fashion. Could that be done through the D... Read more

Just reinstalled windows xp. Reinstalled all my drivers, but I'm not sure what this "audio device on high definition audio bus" driver is; that device driver has put that yellow question mark next to. I've looked and looked on Google, it seems some people have fixed with video card drivers, others, motherboard drivers. I'm using a fatality pro soundblaster card.

I've tried to download the audio drivers for the maximus formula, but I believe this goes to the sound card that comes with the mobo, which I am not using. When I try to install, it says that it doesn't match my hardware, and aborts.

I have also disabled on-board sound or the equivalent thereof for this board, in BIOS.

Answer:audio device on high definition audio bus -- ASUS Maximus Formula

Are you getting sound through the sound card? Did you install the drivers to the sound card? Try to enable on-board and see if you get sound from the card? After you enable on-board, install drivers for it, then go back and disable it so it might shut up.

I recently purchased computer parts to build a new PC for my Birthday which was on July 5th. It came in yesterday and I'm having really bad issue's with this motherboard. After countless hours of trying to troubleshoot this I could not find the final verdict but only the supporting factors of it.

First off, when I assembled the PC and turned it on for the first time, it ran for a fraction of a second and shut right back off. I was like WTF? So I realized something was going wrong. I ended up taking the PC out of the case and putting it a-top the original motherboard box and assembled it on there with the bare essentials need to run it. PSU, RAM, CPU, GPU just what is needed to get it to show the BIOS at least.

So here's what I came up with, when I have the 8 PIN or 4 PIN or both connected along with the ATX Power Connector, the PC will run for that fraction of a second all lights and fans turn on as well and shuts back off right after that. Keep in mind the Power On, OC & RESET buttons on the Motherboard are Lighten up regardless if the system shut down along with all the fans and other lights. So the PSU shouldn't be a problem since it's drawing power still. It also does not ever reach BIOS, the monitor still shows no signal. I tried two monitors to debunk them, a CRT via VGA/DVI & LED Monitor via HDMI.

Now when I remove the 4 PIN or 8 PIN or Both and keep the ATX Power Connector in, the system Fans & Lights will run continuously wit... Read more

my friend has a crosshair v formula motherboard and asus hasn't released anymore bios updates since 2012 so I was thinking would the bios from the crosshair v formula z work with the v formula?

Answer:crosshair v formula bios help

Under no circumstances try to install a BIOS for a different motherboard. If you are lucky it will just refuse to install, if you are not, it could render the motherboard useless. Only ever attempt to install official BIOS updates specific to the motherboard. You can try modified BIOS updates, specific to your motherboard, at your own risk.
Best policy is to only update the BIOS if it actually necessary to make your PC work properly.

You've mentioned the ATX mobo power but have you connected your video card power connector? For you card you need to connect Two PCI-E 6 pin connectors?

If the video card is drawing too much current through the board it will shutdown after a few seconds as stated or not turn on at all.

In any case don't use that vide card for testing,do you have an older PCI-E card laying around you can try? And only use one stick of memory in dimm 0.

Ok My computer specs are that of what is in my signature. I obviously have the Phenom II 940 and an ASUS Crosshair II Formula board. I'm trying to get a good overclock but when i push my voltage back 1.5V it wont hold. My cooling isn't an issue because even with my Bus set to 240 and my multiplier set to 16x and my voltage at 1.5V i get to 3.8 with temps still in the mid 30's. At that point when I try go further it crashes or when I try to run a game at the 3.8 mark it crashes. I've tried upping the Vcore voltage but it automatically crashes. Temps are NOT an issue. The board is an extreme overclocking board but i've seen better overclocks with lesser mobos than what I'm getting. I've uploaded images of my bios. Any info on what else i should change to compensate for the overclocking would be appreciated. As for the ram my board wont let me overclock them to the recommended 1066 with the Phenom II. My old athlon X2 6400 BE allowed me to and yet it was an AM2 CPU not an AM2+ which is suppose to be able to support 1066. Now CPU-z wont recognize the CPU voltage with the phenom or at least not on this board. It did perfectly fine with my athlon just not this one. It's a bios issue. I'm hoping they will come out with a new one for some fixes. Anyway any ocing information on what to do here would be appreciated. For those of you that have the Crosshair IV Formula and are thinking of using a Creative Sound Card
TAKE NOTE ! Turns out that if you ever install the X-Fi codecs that come on the installation disk with the Crosshair IV Formula motherboard, you will need to do an entire reformat of your hard drive and O/S that contains the drivers for your system before installing the sound card.. Ugh, what a pain in the "You Know What !". After resorting to Advanced System Optimizer 3 to make use of the un-install utility, I noticed that there was a registry entry pertaining to the on-board X-Fi sound "card" that could NOT be removed. No utility I found or used would un-install or remove it. Driver Sweeper didn't even find it. After performing a hard drive re-format, and re-installing my O/S; I am happy to report that it is working just fine. Well in truth...I only thought the card sounded good before! The difference is remarkable. The quality of sound I am experiencing now is the richest, and fullest I have ever heard. It's definitely a card worth purchasing even if you have to do a little work, to get it to work.

P.S. When re-installing your Motherboard utilities, DO NOT install the VIA Audio codecs either. I noticed on Via's site that they recommend that you avoid installing their codecs if a third party sound card is to be used...Good to know.

Answer:For Users of the Crosshair IV Formula Motherboards

A comment on Integrated Audio, if you are using a separate sound card. Disable the Integrated Audio in the BIOS as having the Integrated audio enabled can cause conflicts with a separate sound card. Not installing the drivers (codecs as you call them) and leaving the device enabled in the BIOS can still cause problems. I've seen problems with having the Integrated audio enabled and a separate sound card, from not being able to set the default playback device to Code 39 in the Device Manager.

Hi everyone,
I really hope that the problem I'm about to share is bound with the PSU, but I'd like to read your opinions. Basically, my PC turned off suddenly, while it was running a game - I checked the LEDs on the motherboard and the "CPU_LED" was red, then I tried to reboot it, but the same led was still on. I started to think on the possible solutions so I left the PC there for almost 5 hours with the power supply disconnected.
When I came back to try, the led was not red anymore but, after like 45 seconds, the machine turned off again with the same red led on the "CPU_LED". Since I couldn't use my PC I took the opportunity to refresh the thermal paste on the CPU and clean the inside from the dust.
Now, I just tried to turn it on, and again, I could start the PC, and enter the BIOS, just to check temperatures and so on (My AMD Phenom II X6 1090T was running at 34 degree C, so nothing wrong here) but after like one minute, the PC went off with the same "CPU_LED" on.

Tomorrow I'll try to replace the PSU and see how it goes, but what're your thoughts ?

Many thanks,

I'm currently trying to overclock my Intel Q9450 (stock 2.66 GHz) to 3.0 GHz, wondering if these numbers look ok:

FSB: 375 Mhz
Multiplier: 8x
Final Clock: 3000 MHz
Voltage: 1.3V

Idle Temp: 46~50 C
Load Temp: 55-65 C
HSF: Zalman CNPS 9700

Motherboard (Asus Maximus Formula):
Northbridge: 1.35V
Temp: 52 C

RAM (OCZ Platinum DDR2 800Mhz PC6400 Revision 2):
Timings: 4-4-4-15 CL2 T2
Frequency: 901 MHz

Idle/Load Temp: Unknown
Cooling: Heatspreader + OCZ XTC RAM Cooler with 2x 60mm Fans

Antec P180B with 4x 120mm Fan (2 intake, 2 exhaust) in upper chamber, 1x 120mm fan in lower chamber.

PSU: Antec TPQ 850W Modular

Any opinions on these numbers? especially the temperature and voltages. I have some experience overclocking my E6600, but I don't know the stock voltages on the NB, or what the normal operating temps for the Q9450 is. TIA

Currently the temps are:

CPU: 45.0C
Motherboard: 35.0C
T0: 44.0C
T1: 41.0C
T2: 51.0C
T3: 36.0C

The above temps are recorded while playing Dead Island along with a few other games but the Mobo related temps don't seem to move even when I alt tab out of games. I'm wondering if I need to use another program to monitor them.

Power on and everything appears fine. I have not tried BF yet because i frankly don't want to do any damage to components. I have seen crashes in the past but never to complete shutdown. I suspect heat as a possible issue, but I am confident that the thermal compound and heat sink and fan are applied correctly. Any other thoughts?

My problem seems to be a common one, yet most people have been able to resolve it where I have not.

I have no sound. The only sound device I can see in device manager is a "high definition audio device" which I'm guessing is the x-fi card? I cannot find drivers for the x-fi supreme on the creative website. I've tried a couple of win7 creative driver packs that I've found around the internet with no luck.

I've got the latest 'soundmax' drivers from the asus website and tried to force install that driver for the "hd audio device" in device manager. When I did this, windows recognized the card as "Soundmax Integrated HD digital audio" but gives an error code 10(device cannot start). I did not think this motherboard had onboard sound, but this description led me to believe so.

I do have the card in the top slot on my motherboard (people have had issues using other slots). The led in the card does light up.

What should I do?

Thanks for your time.

Answer:X-fi supreme with Asus Crosshair III

I cannot find drivers for the x-fi supreme on the creative website.

That would be because that sound card has about as much resemblance to a X-Fi as an apple to an orange. The only thing even remotely X-Fi like about it is that it gets to use some of the X-Fi applications.

That card is nothing more than an ADI/SoundMax based card. You want drivers for it you need to get them from Asus. Same goes for the software. Creative may have sold i to Asus, but Asus is responsible for the support for it. One thing you can try is to look up other motherboards from Asus that came with the saem card, and see if they have added the updated drivers for that board.

Warning! If you have an ASUS Crosshair V Formula/Thunderbolt motherboard and your processor is an FX Series 6-Core Black Edition AM3+ processor and this is a new build, and this is your first time using AMD and/or your previous build was Intel then this applies to you. If you already own an AMD AM3 processor then please read on as this applies to you as well.

To save anybody else going through a nightmare of wondering why your ASUS Crosshair V Formula/Thunderbolt does not recognise the FX series of processors from AMD and will not boot or post. It's because the FX series is not present within the BIOS and the main reason why your new shinny AMD AM3+ FX Series processor is just basically not booting or posting because it's not present.

It was very naughty of ASUS to release a motherboard which clearly states on their website and in the user guide, this motherboard supports the FX Series of processors. It's documented on their website and on their supported processor as well... which is available at ASUS CPU Support List

Answer:ASUS Crosshair V Forula/Thundrbolt

This sort of problem happens with many motherboards, not just the ones from Asus.

Asus can't dictate which Bios is in the board you buy, if it's older stock it will have an older Bios.

I'm sorry you got caught out by this but I think whoever sold you the board is more to blame than Asus.

I did a quick search through the forums, but I failed to find anything that related to the problem I have with this motherboard.

I recently bought an ASUS Crosshair to be the Mobo for my new computer. When I was done connecting everything, getting it all set up and ready to rock, I flipped the power switch on my PSU, the LED lights that are built into the board light up and I think everything it working fine. Unfortunately, I was wrong. The only thing on the Mobo that seems to be getting any power is those damn LEDs. When I press the case and onboard power switch, nothing happens at all.

Now, I tested the PSU on my working computer, and on the spair mobo I have from an older computer, both are 20 pin mobos and they started up just fine, got the PSU fan/lights working, the case fans/lights running and everything. The ASUS Crosshair gives me nothing, it's a 20+4 Mobo (I'm using a XION Supernova 800w PSU with a 20pin connector and a detached 4pin connector for 20+4 mobos.

Does this mean the Crosshair is DOA, or is there somthing I'm overlooking?

Answer:ASUS Crosshair Powerup Problem

Forgive the possible BGO, but check that there are no extra mounting stubs under the motherboard which will cause it to short with exactly the results you have.
If thats OK, try also taking all the front panel connections off and reconnecting only the power button connector. If OK, then reconnect one at a time.
If thats OK, then disconnect all the drives and if OK reconnect one at a time.
If none of this works, take it all out of the case and try again. If still dead with another PSU then the board is dead.

Hi - I've got an Asus crosshair motherboard, 2GB RAM, Athlon 64 4200+ dual core etc. Board is SUPPOSED to support SLi, my supplier sent 2x 7300GTs of different make (but same chipset), didnt work, so I had to buy a 3rd matching card (Now both installed are Inno3D 7300GTs of same spec) but it STILL doesnt recognise them as SLi - I've tried swapping them, and both work fine alone, I've tried it with and without the SLi bridge, I've uninstalled them both from device manager and the drivers etc and reinstalled, I've tried different types of drivers, I've tried updating the BIOS in the mobo but it just doesnt work...

I'm just about to give up on Nvidia and AMD-based kit forever at this point.

Can anyone help me before I feed this PC piece by useless piece under the wheels of my car?

Answer:SLi on Asus Crosshair Mobo dont work - plz help!

I suspect you have a crossfire board and not a crosshair.
If you give us the exact model of the board that would be good.
If you do infact have a crossfire board you will not be able to use dual nVidia cards.
Crossfire is an ATI only spec, so you need 2 ATI based cards.

I've just purchased a Phenom II X6 1090T and an Asus Crosshair IV motherboard. The stock AMD cooler is too loud. I'd like to replace it with something like the Scythe SCKBT-1000 (Kabuto), but not sure if it will physically fit on the board without being obstructed by other components such as memory in the case.

Anyone have experience with this combination? Can you recommend a similar heatsink for this board/chip combination?

I'm also considering the Cooler Master Hyper N520 and the Zalman CNPS10X Flex.

I think the best and most helpful information would be to know the actual dimensions of the motherboard, particularly the area around the processor, provided by Asus, but have been unable to find them. I could then match those numbers up with those that are provided by the cooler mfr.

I need help!

Okay so I hooked up all my parts last night to my ASUS Crosshair Formula V mobo and when I boot it will not show any video whatsoever. No beeps, no video no nothing.

I have a 560ti in there right now because I wanted to test it before my new 970 came in that I ordered yesterday, just wanted to see if the mobo was functional and all my other components were working.

Does anyone know why I would be getting no video? I was thinking maybe I need to reset the CMOS? Some people told me to check the BIOS but how do I do that if I have zero video on my screen?

Any help would be great as I am at wit's end with this stupid computer, it has not run right since I moved and it is extremely frustrating putting all this time and money into this thing with no results.

I used to have a Corsair Liquid CPU cooler but the pump died and I finally got fed up with Liquid Coolers and went with a Noctua heat sink instead. Going to do some more testing after work but was hoping to get some tips from you guys. I have 2 other 560ti's I can test to see if that card is just dead but it was like midnight and just decided to give up for the night last night.

Also, My motherboard doesn't have an on-board video port I don't believe, I see none at least =\

My PC was up and running with drivers loaded for this exact card before it went down, the computer has just been sitting there for months. I am using the same hard drive, only thing that has changed is the Noctua... Read more

Answer:Video issue with Asus Crosshair V and 560ti GPU

Let's do this one step at a time, first no part of any computer lasts for ever. U said u had 2 other video cards, first, see if either one of them will work. If that does not work, it could be the slot in the mother board, try an other X16 slot. but honestly to me it sounds like the mother board is not working if u have a speaker plugged into it and assuming the speaker is working because normally there would be beeps if the motherboard is not sending a video signal.

Hi all
I have just built a computer, not my first, with the Asus maximus formula 9 mobo. All seems to have come together well, but when I boot, I get the ROG screen telling me to press delete or f2 to enter bios and it doesn't matter how many times I press or hold these buttons it won't go to Bios.

I then get the American Megatrends screen, which recognises ram (albeit at a lower speed than the ram I've installed) and CPU and data devices, but it sticks on this screen. The AM screen says press F1 to run set up, but this does nothing also.

My mobo q LEDs are all extinguished except for boot, which is green. The error code display reads A0 which I understand means everything is fine.

I wonder if there is a keyboard issue. All lights display on the kb, indicating there is power. The system speaker doesn't beep to say there is no kb, and the AM screen recognises there is a keyboard but I read in the mobo manual that I should be able to press ctrl alt del to reset and I cannot. Plus I can't seem to get into the bios despite the mobo thinking all is fine.

Grateful for help please!

It takes around a minute from the time i turn my pc on till it gets into windows which i know isnt right for my system.

It takes about 20-30 seconds to get to windows loading screen as bios takes a while and then it detects my drives which takes another 8 seconds or so.

Systems specs are:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB)
GeForce 9800 GX2 1024MB GDDR3
Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 DHX PC2-6400C4DHX TwinX (2x1GB)
150GB Western Digital 10000RPM 16MB Cache Raptor X
200GB SATA 150 Maxtor 8MB Cache Hard Drive
Asus Maximus Formula Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2
Coolermaster Real Power 700w Modular

Surely something isnt right..

I've updated my bios to the latest version.

Please help, thanks.

Answer:Anybody here with asus maximus m/b? Slow boot up

Could be a memory problem. If you have more than one stick, remove one & try it again. If that doesn't help stick the one in that you removed & remove the other one.
It could always be a faulty cable as well, but I would try the ram first.

Answer:CPU BLOWOUT.....ASUS CROSSHAIR, 8600 GT * 2, 2 GB KINGSTON RAM, 160 GB HDD!!it sucks

It's best to start off as simple as you can with just one video card and one stick of memory, nothing else. Then try the other ones one at a time, you may find a bad one. If you know one of those PSUs worked you probably can rule that out.

I like to try with no memory at all. That should give a beep code through the case speaker. Then add one stick. If that doesn't work try another memory slot. Some mobos are picky and need a clear CMOS after changes.

Well, I just got a new motherboard, ram and cpu. It is an Asus Crosshair with nforce 590 sli chipset. The ram is 2 x 1gb ocz pc2-8500, running at 1072mhz and 2.45 volts, and the cpu is an amd x2 5200+ running at 2.68 and 1.53 volts. First of all, are these temps and voltages appropriate? i am really new to am2 and ddr2, but i havent fried it all yet... Also, what i find weird is that i am running windows vista ultimate 32 bit, and whenever i overclock so far in bios, vista seems to adjust the settings to a certain point so everything remains semi-stable. under xp, if i overclocked/overvoltaged too far, i would get a bsod and instant reboot. The reason i am running my ram at 2.45 is because i got a system crash/bsod due to "memory management." the ocz tech support team suggested i set the voltage on my ram to at least 2.1v. Now this is E.P.P. ram, so in the bios, i can set the option to optimal or high frequency for "sli-ready memory" , which this ram is. There is also an option for cpuoc ( a special sli ready memory asus/nvidia thing i guess?) and i have it set to "cpu-oc max" hence the cpu voltage increase. in bios my cpu heats up to around 60, but like i said earlier, when i get into vista it kind of gets more stable, and settles down to around 47. It is only at 2.68 ghz, if i set the option to cpu-oc max , shouldnt it overclock even further? i guess there is a ton of stuff i do not know about this board.

Hi all I'm looking to buy a new motherboard sometime this week, I'm looking to upgrade from a MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard to a more powerful overclocking board. I am currently Running a i5 3570k @ 4.2 ghz and 2 Xfx Black Edition 7970 Crossfired. I'm trying to pick from either the

Asus Maximus V Extreme board or the

Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP7 board the reason I'm switching motherboard is because currently I'm buying my parts for my full water cooling loop so I want to get a new board in the case before I install and fill the loop, and I plan on upgrading to a 3rd 7970 graphic card and I want to easily be able to overclock the whole system. Any Opinions be great I am just looking for a Z77 Platform 1155 Socket motherboard ( I'm not upgrading my processor yet) with 3/4way CFX and SLI support also which BIOS do you prefer better Asus or Gigabyte? Thanks a lot!

Answer:Asus Maximus V Extreme or Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP7?

Neither, I don't think it's wise to spend $350+ on what is now a legacy socket for a few extra Mhz. If you really need the extra CPU power you should save up for Ivy Bridge E (or get a 3770K), and if you're just gaming the 3570K at 4.2Ghz is more than enough.

Hi Everyone,

I have a new motherboard (Maximus v Gene) and I've brought a Icy Box (IB-865) card reader to make use of the USB 3 connector on the motherboard. However the unit works well for a dozen reboots and then it malfunctions. After a dozen reboots the Icy Box power light no longer powers up and the storage cards I plug into the unit no longer show up in windows. The only way i can resolve the issue is to open up the case and unplug and plug the unit back in. Its not faulty as i've retunred one unit thinking it was faulty but the same fault as reappeared on the new unit. I've tried upgrading and downgrading the BIOS and playing with a few settings but no joy. Can anyone think of anything i can try without having to keep opening up the case?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Icy Box (IB-865) on a ASUS Maximus v Gene Board USB 3 incompatible?

It could be that it gets put to sleep for no good reason (it happens), try the following:

Go to your Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > and click on the "Device Manager" button.

In the Device Manager window, find the item or items labeled "Universal Serial Bus controllers." Open it, and double-click the first item called "USB Root Hub."

In the USB Root Hub Properties dialog, click on the "Power Management" tab.

"Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is checked by default.

Uncheck this box, and click "OK."

Repeat for all "Universal Serial Bus controllers." items if there is more than one.

I'm looking to build a relatively cheap gaming build. This will be my first build and I'm stuck between choosing either the maximus or the deluxe. Both are currently within my budget. I'm looking to mainly play starcraft, league, dota, hon and watch movies on this desktop. As I am not near a router, I cannot connect with ethernet so I need the onboard wifi. This is my current build:

Any help would be appreciated. I'm trying to keep the budget under 1k

Answer:Asus maximus vi impact or z87i deluxe

Never had an Impact but on a formula right now and have had the Z87I deluxe I personally would say the Maximus is the better but I overclock my computers to the max and u can screw up any board doing that Processors are pretty forgiving if u do not burn it up and I say that get good cooling which is a requirement even for playing games if u live in a warm climate.
then I looked at u're part picker and would say get 16MGB of memory and get a hard drive for more storage, they are cheap.

I have an ASUS maximus VII here that I have been very happy with so far. By far one of my favorite boards to date. I am running dual GTX 780s on it and am looking to expand to 3gtx 780s..... It LOOKS like there is about a spare 6mm of clearance left over id I were to install a 3d card, but before I go drop another $450 I am hoping someone can tell me if the board will actually support 3way SLI. I cant think of why it wouldn't, but $450 is not a small amount to be doing an experiment.

I appreciate the support!

Answer:Can an ASUS Maximus VII support 3 graphics cards?

I just did some research and see that it chokes up on the last one being PCIe2.0-8x I may buy a rampage in the future and use this one in my server farm.... We will see. Still looking for opinions. I think the obvious answer is the transfer rate is not worth it but if someone wants to tell me I'm wrong, I'm all ears.

Parts I am using:

g.skill trident X 2400mhz (at 1600 atm)
cm silent pro modlar 700w

After that I removed all the components out of the case and tested without parts that I did not need.
Here is the video how it looks:

I have to press start button twice, it was the same when I used case button as well.
It detected all 4 of my hdds, it detects ram and cpu as well.
I can not get into bios.
I also updated bios using usb and bios update button (without starting PC) and it updated succusfully (lights were flashing for 10 secs and when they stopped, it finished, so says in manual) and I tried again, but still the same error.
I tried removing keyboard and mouse, so only motherboard, cpu and one ram were inside and powersupply powered motherboard, and still the same error.
I used this power supply before on my previous build, and it worked (cm silent pro 700w modular).

I do not know what else to do, what could it be ?
All the parts except PSU are new, and I just put them together.
PS I dont know if this has something to do with this, but plastic cover covering cpu socket on motherboard was off, moving arround in package, when i opened it.

Hello. I've got my PC a few days ago, it was sent to me from Europe where I used it without any issues for ~2 years. So I built it up 3-4 days ago and it was working perfectly. I needed to move it, so I shut it down, unplugged it, moved it, plugged it back (to the same cord, same power cable), but it didn't start. To be more specific, it didn't get to the BIOS "phase". The motherboard lit up, fans were working, I heard HDD starting (no beep tho), but the motherboard was displaying Q Code 76, no post. After few restarts, I shut it down, unplugged and plugged back the EATX cable and it booted up without any issues! However, after several hours of working on the computer, I had to move it again (cuz of the recent "inspection"), so I shut it down, unplugged everything, plugged it back in (still the same cord&cable) and it happened again. But this time, reconnecting EATX cable didn't help. To be even more specific, the startup process looks like: Start -> Q Code 00 -> Q Code 14 & CPU_LED lights up (bright red) -> Q Code 76, no post. And that was it. After a few hours of trying and rebuilding it from a scratch, I somehow made it work again! I restarted it several times and it was working perfectly. So I was working on the computer for about 10 hours, then I went to lay down, I shut it down, but my curiosity got me and I tried starting it and boom, it happened again. The same issue. I tried: Reconnecting everything, CMOS clear... Read more

Hello bruder and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

Most ISP's get their security software from an outside vendor. I do not know who provides NTL with their package. NTL's website did not state where it comes from. Both of the files listed by the NTL package are false positives. One is for Symantec LiveUpdate and the other is for Cubase. Neither are malicious.

I would suggest keeping an eye on what this software is flagging as infections and do not simply take it for granted that what it is saying is true. If it continues to flag legitimate files as infected files then consider replacing it with a different package.

I have a headset that seems to malfunction due to not beeing connected to a USB 2.0 slot. I have checked my Device Manager and these are my USB Slots apparently:
I googled "Standard OpenHCD USB-Host Controller" and it seems that it is displayed so by Windows itself to guarentee backwards compatability to USB 1.1 and "tranforms" itself into an Advanced USB 2.0 port once a USB 2.0 device is plugged in. For me, however it does not do that.

My motherboard (Asus Formula IV) provides drivers for the USB 3.0 Ports only. I assume the USB 2.0 Drivers are part of the Motherboard Chipset. The manufacturers website, however, only provides me with a link to "AMD Chipset Driver V3.0.762.0 for Windows XP 32/64bit & Vista 32/64bit & Windows7 32/64bit.(WHQL)" from 2010. I installed that, am not sure however if it's outdated.

How should I procede?
Thanks in advance for any help

Hi koga99, welcome to the Forum.

You seem to be blaming the computer for your headset malfunction, whereas the problem is more likely to be with the headset.

What is the make of the headset & does the headset have it's own software?.

I purchased an open box Asus Rampage Formula motherboard from Newegg. There was no drivers disk included. I need to know which drivers do I need to download from the Asus website?

Hi all

This is only a hardware related question so it doesn't have anything to do with Windows 7 but here it goes.
About a year or so ago my network card & implicitly my motherboard got stroke by lightning :|, as I mentioned HERE.

So far it seams to be working OK except the network card and the fact I cannot disable the ROG logo.
However, I was thinking I should consider the fact that it might break some day so I am trying to find a replacement but I haven't found one around.

Can you recommend me one that's still on sale and compatible with my other components?

My system specs are:
ASUS Striker II Formula
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5Ghz
4*2 Gb RAM DDR2 800Mhz
ASUS GeForce 285GTX 1Gb DDR3

Answer:Alternative to ASUS Striker II Formula

Looks difficult.

Here's what my favorite US online merchant has: - Computer Hardware, Motherboards, Intel Motherboards, LGA 775

(Newegg doesn't ship outside the US and Canada. so this is only for reference.)

They're all microATX boards, and are hardly in the same class as a Striker II Formula.

I see a couple of copies of the Striker II Formula on eBay. They are fairly expensive.

I guess the days of Socket 775/DDR2 are largely over.

Sorry that I can't be more helpful.

hi guys i have a asus formula iv mobo and it wont fit in my standard case of course this mobo is not your average size i really need help finding what ebay cases will fit it it say its a standard ATX size but is it i dont know and really need help finding out what spec case i need thanks guys not just ebay cases something around 30-50 thanks guys

Answer:need help finding case to fit asus formula iv in

It should fit in any mid/full ATX case like one of these: (I use this case at home: Asus M4N72-E motherboard, Nvidia GTX570 video card, Spire ThermaxII Eclipse CPU cooler - I LOVE THIS CASE!)

Basically, any case that supports "full ATX" motherboards should be OK. However, if you have a huge modern video card (Nvidia GTX570/580/590 or Radeon 6xxx) you might run in to problems with the length of the video, so do some research if you have a huge video card. Many were the times that I tried to build a system for a client, where they picked the cheapest case that would fit the giant full ATX motherboard, only to find that the video card wouldn't fit!

Hi all,

I am trying to control my system fans either using Asus Fan Xpert or Speedfan. Neither seem to work. I have tried changing settings in my BIOS like Q-Fan and Cool 'n Quiet but nothing seems to work.

I am only able to change my CPU fan (Which is a water pump) not the other fans in the case.

Anyone got any ideas or any other bits of software to try and use or things to do please tell me !

Thanks, If you need more info just ask !

PS SpeedFan:
Speedfan is able to see the fans & RPM however changing the speeds of the fans doesn't do anything apart from Pwm2 on the right side just changes the CPU fan and that's it

Answer:Asus IV Formula Corssair fan control?

Bump?! is anyone able to help please...
