XP Pro doesn't recognize external SG 250gb drive

Question: XP Pro doesn't recognize external SG 250gb drive

My laptop Dell Latitude D830 running XP Pro does not recognize the external Seagate 250 gb drive, even under device Manager. I?ve tried it under Slave, Master and Cable-Select Option but with no success. Any ideas? Periodically I hear from the disk a click about one second apart. Probably it?s gone bad, so if it has crashed, how can I recover data on it? How can I get XP recognize it?

Preferred Solution: XP Pro doesn't recognize external SG 250gb drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: XP Pro doesn't recognize external SG 250gb drive

Hi,

I'm struggling to connect my Sony Handycam DCR-SR42 to my Compaq Laptop, Windows XP.
It works on other computers without a problem that's why I think it must be some setting in XP.
I plug it in when prompted by installation software and the camera goes to :'preparing' Then immediately the windows found new hardware screen pops up. On the other computers that screen didn't come up and the camera would go straight into 'connecting' mode.
I tried switching the 'found new hardware' off by disabling the plug and play in 'services' with no luck.
When I connect the camera while I'm starting up the laptop, it goes straight into 'connecting' mode but unfortunately that stops as soon as windows is started.

I would like windows to detect my camera as a drive and not 'other devices'. How can I do that?

Any suggestions would be more then welcome!

Answer:PC doesn't recognize camera as external drive

As far as I know there is no setting for that in XP. Its the firmware of the plugged in device that's telling XP what it is. That device or a similar device were probably plugged into those other computers at some time in the past so they've already gone through the recognization process.

Have you gone ahead and completed the new hardware process? Possibly you could get it to work the way you want using software that comes with and is for the camera but strictly on an XP basis, its reading the firmware signal of the device and that's how the determination is made as to what sort of device it is that's plugged in (i.e., mass storage, optical, USB hub, etc.).

All of a sudden my computer does not recognize my external hard drive which was drive K. I have a Dell E310 running windows XP Service pack 3. The drive is a Seagate FreeAgent Desktop. There is no installation disk...it is a plug and play. It is listed under disk drives in device manager but not in disk management. I checked and it says the driver is current and device is working properly. I have had it plugged into a USB hub since it's been connected and all other devices plugged into hub work fine. Have tried different USB ports both on the hub and on the computer itself. I am somewhat knowledgeable about computers but this is beyond my limited scope. Can anybody help?

Answer:Computer doesn't recognize external drive

Try the drive on another computer to make sure the drive is still viable.

I've got a problem that I just can't seem to wrap my head around. I've got a custom-built PC with an Asus K8N-VM motherboard, and it doesn't want to read my Hitachi external hard disk. I got it to work for a few shining moments a couple weeks ago, but couldn't quite get it to function afterwards. I have no idea what I did to get it working, as I was running the Traditional Chinese version of Windows XP at the time. As this OS had been giving me no small amount of trouble ( and also, I can't read Chinese), I bought and installed the English version this week, assuming that the non-twitchy English version would solve the problem.

It didn't. When I plug the device into the two front USB ports, I get that USB Device Not Recognized message in the lower right corner, and it shows up as an Unknown Device in the Device Manager. When I try it in the four ports in the back, I get no message whatsoever and nothing shows up in the Device Manager. In neither case does the extra memory show up in the Disk Management menu. It's not a problem with the USB ports; they work just fine when I plug in my memory stick or my digital camera card ( in fact, they work even better than they did when I had the Chinese OS). The external HD works fine when I use it on my laptop ( also running XP). I'm at a loss. Anyone out there have any idea what could be causing this?

Answer:PC doesn't recognize external hard drive

this is what I found
My external drive is not detected in Windows XP/2000 (and displays a yellow ! icon next to it in the Device Manager)
If your external drive is not detected in Windows XP/2000, it is always a good idea to check the Disk Management and Device Manager.

Right-click on My Computer.

Click on Manage.

Choose Disk Management from the left column.

Try to find the external drive in the lower window. It should be "Disk 1" or some other number (but not Disk 0).

Then choose Device Manager from the left column.

Choose Disk drives.

If the drive is not seen there, check under Universal Serial Bus Controllers (if the drive is connected via USB). The drive should appear as a USB Mass Storage Device.

If a yellow ! icon is displayed next to it, double-click on the drive.

A Properties window will appear and will probably say "This device is not working properly" and will give either (Code 28) or (Code 10).

If Code 10 appears, the drive has most probably failed. Verify by trying the drive with another USB cable or port, or on another computer. You can begin a drive replacement order online.

If Code 28 appears, you will need to test the drive on another computer. If the drive works fine on another computer, there are a few steps to follow:

Open a Windows Explorer window (right-click on Start > Explore).

In the address bar, type c:\windows\inf and press Enter.

Right-click on the file INFCACHE.1.

Hey there, I just bought  WD external hard drive (link is below)http://support.wdc.com/product/kb.asp?modelno=WD3200H1U-00&x=13&y=14aanndd, I'm runnin Vista 64 bit.I'm having trouble installing the hard drive. when I double click setup.exe, a window pops up and says,"To run this program, version 8 or greater of Flash ActiveX Control is needed. You can download it at etc. etc. etc..."Well, I have version 9 or 10 or whichever new version there is. Also, while this window is up, another window is up in the top left corner, and it is green?I hit cancel, because I DO have flash and then it says this:When I went to "Solutions Online" it just told me the problem was caused by Flash and I'd have to install it. Well I uninstalled it, reinstalled it and I still have the same problem. Has anyone else encountered this?? It's really weird.

Help! My OP isn't recognizing my hard drive.

I am working with Windows 7 Ultimate, and it won't pick up my external hard drive. When I do the steps above it says that its working properly, but it does let me have access to it. Please tell me what is the best way to keep from throwing my computer out the window?

Answer:PC doesn't recognize external hard drive Windows 7

Hi

Moved your post to its own thread as differnent OSes may need different fixes as well as different hardware drivers.

So did you complete all of the advice in this thread HERE and is exactly what you mention above in letting you have access or not allowing you access.

When I do the steps above it says that its working properly, but it does let me have access to it.Click to expand...

Is your Windows 7 fully upto date with all updates and hotfixes?

What is the make and model of External HDD?
Have you tried the drive in another PC and did it work ok?
Has the drive been working ok for a while and this is a new occurance of has this gone on since you have had the drive?
Was the external HDD formatted in a Windows XP PC originally at all and what File Format is being used (FAT, FAT32 or NTFS)?

What I would try is to delete the driver for the mass storage device in Device Manager (also while in device manager are there any devices with yellow ! marks and if so what) and to do this on the correct drive, dont have the USB drive pluged in, then in Device Manager open the Universal Serial Bus Controllers branch, then plug in the drive and a new hardware item will appear, likely a mass storage device, once this appears right click it and choose uninstall, then unplug the external HDD and reboot, then plug in the external drive and Windows will re-install* the driver

I had my WD external hard drive for more than a year now, and it worked fine until today.

My laptop suddenly won't recognize my external hard drive.

I have two USB ports and they seem to be working just fine; I've tried with different devices.

I plugged my external hard drive to my friend's laptop, and that worked fine...so I have no idea what's wrong.

The LED light on the hard drive stays lit (very few or no blinking) and there's no spinning or ventilating sound at all.

Seems like only the light is on without the device actually working.

Could anyone help please?

Thanks.

I"ve had a Simpletech external hard drive for a few years now, and it's worked great on every computer that's had Windows XP (it's a plug and play). However, I just bought a new laptop with Windows 7, and when I tried to plug it in to the USB port on it, it just told me "USB device not recognized." The power light comes on, too. This is a brand new computer, so I'm not taking it apart to reassemble anything, and the external HD still works fine on my XP computers, so I know it has to be something about Windows 7 it doesn't like.

System: Win 7 Home, SP1 with latest update.
Hard Drive: Seagate 3 TB external hard drive. Automatically turns on, no power switch.

Here's the problem. My external hard drive no longer wants to play nicely with my laptop, or vice versa. Now, I have my mouse plugged into one of the USBs, (doesn't matter which one, I move it around) and it works fine. Flash drives, same thing, no problem. Same with both of my game controllers. Never a problem.

I go to plug in my external hard drive, and either it will come on for like 60 seconds and then go away, or it doesn't come on at all. However, if my husband plugs in my external hard drive to his computer, which, by the way is the exact same as my computer, both laptops of the same brand and model, it comes on within 10 seconds and stays on.

My external hard drive USED to work on my laptop just fine. And, my smaller (1 tb Iomega) external hard drive works great on this laptop.

So, what did I inadvertently change to make my laptop no longer wish to speak to my external hard drive? I'll bet it's something really simple.

Any help at all will be greatly appreciated, and not argued with in the least!! I promise! (my husband is making me say that. LOL)

Thank you!!

Lynn

I'll try to be brief.
1st, I didn't see a topic dealing exactly with my problem. So here goes.
I bought an Inspiron 15 laptop w/o an OS, and the optical drive didn't work. The seller made me aware of this and said I needed to buy an external optical drive to install Vista. He gave me the Vista install/repair disk (and the drivers disk).
While I was waiting for the optical drive to be delivered I loaded Ubuntu from a disk I had made. Don't ask me why the Linux disk would work using the internal drive but the Vista disk won't. Baffling.
So I recieved a new external optical drive and went to work on installing Vista over the Linux OS. I erased the Linux 1st. Then tried to install Vista, but no matter what I did (changing the boot order etc) the laptop doesn't "find" or "see"an OS to install. In other words I can't boot it up with the Vista OS disk using the external drive.
I can provide any details you may need. Fortunately I also have a desktop computer to work from.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Laptop doesn't recognize external optical drive...

Things to check;
1. The Vista install disk is almost certainly a DVD disk.
2. The Linux disk is probably just an ordinary CD (you would know).
3. Modern ODDs have 2 lasers, one for DVD and one for CD.
4. It's possible for the DVD laser to fail, but the CD laser will work fine. This explains why the Linux CD would load, but the Vista disk won't.
5. So, since the internal ODD loaded the Linux disk, but not the Vista disk, then the DVD laser has failed on the internal ODD. If you replace the internal ODD with a new one, you should be good-to-go.

Now, regarding the external drive;
1. Is it a DVD drive? If not, it needs to be.
2. Is it externally powered, or does it get it's power from the USB port? It needs to be externally powered, because USB power is notoriously finicky for heavy load operations.

To summarize... the ODDs need to be DVD capable to load a Vista disk.

However, today I tried to connect my Seagate Freeagent external hard drive, its a 320 GB eSATA drive with USB 2.0 and my laptop doesn't recognize it. It always worked before when I had Windows Vista. I tried to use Disk Management to see the if I could find the drive, but its not there, I've also used partition wizard home edition. I don't have details on what was done to change the drive letter, because I wasn't the one that did this. But here's an overview of the results:

The removable drive shows up in explorer with its new drive letter, however when you click on it, Windows (using Vista and 7) says that it must be formatted before use- checking the drive properties shows a wrong hard drive size.

I'm thinking there are 2 ways of resolving the situation:

1. getting an outside program that will access the drive and allow me to copy the files to a different drive (then formatting the removable drive) or
2.somehow getting Windows to recognize the files on the removable drive.

If anyone knows what software I can use to access and copy the files on the drive or how to get Windows to recognize the drive that it used to recognize normally, I'd appreciate it.

Answer:Changed drive letter on external HD, now Windows doesn't recognize it

Have you tried removing power from the external drive for 15 minutes, then try it again?

Hi,

I have a 250GB WD external HDD that I have a lot of important work stored on. It suddenly stopped showing up in my computer when I plug it in. It does however show up in the bottom right bar and can be safely removed although this takes a lot longer than it should do.

I have read other threads and it doesn't show up in 'disk management' but it does show up in 'device manager' under 'disk drives'.

I have read previous threads and they say to change the cable but I don't see how this would affect it as it is a short standard cable that it came with and the white LED shows up. I have also checked the internal connections and they look fine.

I'd appreciate any advice that anyone can offer. Perferably in Lehmans terms as I'm not an IT specialist!

In anticipation.

Change the cable. Beyond that it's disassembly.

IMO W-D external drives suffer from issues with the connections (the drives are fine).
Earlier this week I took apart my W-D Passport drive because it had the same symptoms that you describe. Once apart it worked like a charm!

You can get a 1TB external hd for $75. Why limit yourself. You can store an image of your hd, as well as back it up. Will the 250GB be ok? Yes. But go ahead and get the larger drive.

You may want to check the drive on another computer because it should just be plug and play.

Hello all. I'm hoping someone can help me. I have a 250gb maxtor hard drive. I have just purchased my second external case off of ebay and it does not work!!

The first one was no name brand, it says "Awesome" on the case and has lights that light up around the case. It said on the web it supports up to 250gb, and on the auction. When I plug it in, it recognizes it and I can view an play files off of it for maybe 5 minutes then it says "USB device not recognized" and gives errors like "this usb device can run faster on USB 2.0" which it is in a 2.0 port. Funny thing is right when I got it, it worked for a few hours, it kept working pretty well at first for maybe a week, then it just stops working after a few minutes.

Any ideas on how to get Xp to pull it's head out and see these partitions?

I understand not all 250GB will be available for user data but is it reasonable for 18GB to be consumed by filesystem info?

Does anyone know how many milliamps this device draws?

The "Technical Specification" provides plenty of info but does not specify the actual current. All it says is that it is powered directly from the USB port. But I need to know exactly what the peak ma of this device is.

Hi I'm Mark. I'm having a problem when it comes with my notebook [dell inspiron 600m] and my external hard disk [WD Elements 250gb]. when I connected the 5 pin cable of the external hard disk to the usb port of the notebook, the connection is seem to unstable or on-and-off, therefore making file copying impossible. The external hard drive and the notebook is in good condition, although I can't really figure out what seems to be the problem. I am also having a theory that this might be a power supply problem. I would be very grateful to someone who can help me about this matter..

Hi, I have Toshiba satellite M70. The original HD that came with the laptop is Toshiba MK 1032GSX with 100 GB storage. I bought a new HD Toshiba MQ01ABD050 with 500GB storage. I also upgraded my RAMs.
1- I installed my new HD in my laptop and installed windows XP SP3. I want to use my old HD as an external HD.
2- I plugged it into the computer via USB cable, but the computer wouldn't recognize the external HD.
3- I plugged the old HD back into the computer and formatted it, and installed a fresh Win XP SP3.
4- I put my new HD back into the laptop and tried to plug the old HD as external HD to see if it would work now, but the computer still doesn't recognize it.
5- I opened Computer Management and looked under Disk Management, but the external HD didn't show up there.
6- I plugged it into different USP and waited for a minute and a new icon for the external HD in my computer pops up. I double clicked it and gives an error "Please insert a disk in drive E".
Then the icon disappears. I unplugged the HD and plugged it back in but the icon would show up again. I waited for an hour before I plug it back on. The icon appeared for 2 seconds and then disappeared again.
I know it's not a hardware problem for the following reasons:
1- When I plug in the external HD, the light in the HD case turns on (Red).
2- I can hear and feel that the HD is running.
3- I plugged the HD back into the laptop as internal HD to check if it works, and Win XP shows up so ther... Read more

Answer:Computer doesn't recognize my External HD.

Yeah a lot of the older HDD don't work so well with the newer USB / IDE/PATA/SATA adapter kits. I am using one here with 3.5 HDD Seagate and WD to see which ones are working and not. You can hear them spin-up but that doesn't mean they're 100% okay. In your case you should try a desktop instead of the laptop USB ports might be getting duff. Like I said try a different PC see if they can be seen. External USB just get WD Passport and then transfer any data over to it from the old one. That 100GB I am sure the life on it started to go. MTB on these HDD in the past didn't live up to as promise.

I gave this suggestion Both USB ports on laptop suddenly stopped working in another post here just a few hours ago.

Try that fix and see if it works for you.

Hey there i would like to inform you all , all those who have the same problem that i actually fix the problem.IT'S IMPORTANT THAT YOU NEED TO UPDATE THE AUDIO DRIVER (HD AUDIO REALTEK) TO THE LAST DRIVER IN ORDER TO WORK  (I PARTLY FIXED MY PROBLEM WITH INSTALLING THE REALTEK HD AUDIO DRIVER)...(After installation restart must be preformed)...1. Now first insert the 3.5mm jack from the adapter cable into the jack of the laptop and you will be prompted to choose one of the selected options.. (because you pluged something)(JUST EXACTLY AS THE PIC,  NOTE: I USE WINDOWS 8.1 PRO (other OS may be different) ). So my first mistake was selecting the "Headhpone" option which is actually "mistake"  You must select the "Headset" option, in order the laptop recognize the "3.5mm cable adapter as a headset (headphones)" and after all this you done, then you put the MICROPHONE cable from your headphones to the red jack of the adapter cable, and you put the other jack for the headspeakers in the other green/black jack. This fixed my problem...NOTE: NEVER CHOOSE "REMEMBER MY SELECTION" IN ORDER TO CHANGE YOUR MIND AND CHANGE BETWEEN THE OPTIONS EVERYTIME YOU PUT ON THE 3.5MM ADAPTER CABLE OR SOMETHING ELSE...NOTE: USERS THAT ARE NOT PROMPTED TO CHOOSE SOME OF THIS OPTIONS (IF THE OPTION BOX DOESNT SHOW UP AFTER YOU PLUG IN SOMETHING) NEED TO RESET THE SETTINGS , WHICH I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THAT , YOU YOU'LL HAVE TO SEARCH ABOUT THAT ISSUE ...THANKS, I HOPE SOMEHOW HELPED ... I just purchased a HP nc6120, with WinXP2. I have a Seagate USB external hard drive, which I want to use to back up the laptop as well as my desktop pc.

The desktop pc recognizes the external unit, creates a new drive mapping, etc. When I attach the unit to the laptop, no recognition occurs. The ext hdd does not appear in the my computer-->manage--->storage--->disk management list. I've rebooted the computer with the unit attached, to no avail. I also tried connecting it after the computer booted. Same result.

My intention is to partition the external hdd using one partition as backup for the desktop, and the other for the laptop.

My question is two fold:

Is the laptop not recognizing the external hdd because I've got information on it from the desktop?

If so, would partitioning it on the destop, and then attaching the unit to the laptop help?

Both computers are using WinXP2. Thanks.

Answer:New laptop doesn't recognize External HDD

I would check the laptop's bios for anything concerning USB. It being recognized by the desk top show that the drive is working properly!

I recently bought Satellite L50-B-1VP and I have some problems to connect it to my TV.
I have tried using an HDMI cable and also a VGA cable but nothing happens.

The cables and the TV are ok because i have used them before.
When i try with the HDMI it says ;no signal detected, but using the VGA cable the TV kind of restarts and the screen is black. I am using Windows 7 32-bit and i tried Fn+F4 and also Windows + P.

The problem is that the external TV is not recognized and does not appear in display settings.
What can i do?

If anyone could help me i would appreciate it very much!

Answer:Satellite L50-B-1VP doesn't recognize external monitor

The notebook was sold without preinstalled Windows system. It seems that you installed and configured Win 7 at your own hand.

Well, I guess the problems with the video output may be related to missing drivers or to system misconfiguration.
From my point of few you should check some essential points.

First of all I would recommend you to check if the essential graphic card driver was installed.
The notebook does not support dedicated graphic card but the CPU (Intel N3540) provides internal GPU Intel HD Graphics.

So I recommend you to reinstall the Intel Display Driver as well as the Intel Chip Set Utility

Hi all. Recently I purchased a Logitech h151 headset which has only one single jack, as my ASUS laptop has only one jack used for a headset. However, upon connecting the headset, although the sound plays through it perfectly and without issue, the microphone doesn't seem to work.

I've tried multiple solutions - I went to the Realtek Audio Manager to try and find advanced options, as I read that a possible fix to this is to go there and select an option to separate all input jacks. However, I cannot seem to find advanced options anywhere. I have also entered the Sound section in the control panel, and under the microphone section my external microphone was not detected, even after showing all disabled devices.

As for the Realtek Audio Manager issue, I read of several solutions to make advanced options pop up - from updating the driver to completely uninstalling it and such. As you can probably understand, I would rather not result to such things as messing with the drivers, as I am not a tech-savvy person and will not be able to claw out of a technical hole should I get into one.

Does anyone have any other solutions to fixing this? If not, is updating/uninstalling the drivers really the solution? An early and useful response would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, the internal mic is being used and can be detected (of course).

Answer:Realtek doesn't recognize external microphone.

Just to make sure...have you plugged in the headset into another device to make sure the microphone actually works , a phone might be a good test.

And when you right click the audio icon in the tray at the bottom right of the taskbar and choose 'recording devices' your headphone doesn't appear as an option?.

today i bought an external harddisk of model SimpleDRIVE 320GB.
the problem is that Windows vista doesn't recognize it and asks for a driver which the company doesn't provide. it works well with windows XP.

the manuel says that it doesn't need driver and it should work as you plug it in on both Vista and XP.

I appreciate any kind of help..

Answer:Windows Vista doesn't recognize my external harddisk ?

As far as the drivers go, a couple things you could try is updating the driver software through the device manager, and if that doesn't work, take the model number and try going to the company's website or google and see if you can find drivers. Does the company have a support number and have you tried to call it yet?

Hello,I have a very frustating problem.I was using W520 + mini dock 3 plus + 2x external EIZO monitors in DVI ports for years without any problem.I have optimus disabled in BIOS, W520 is closed and every time I turn it ON I got two external screens just perfect. However. I had to reinstall my system, and I am unable to get this configuration working again. My BIOS setup is untouched, I just reinstalled windows 7 64bit just I had before, and the second screen is not working. I just had only one external screen, or NTB+external, but I need two externals. I tried to reinstall nVidia drivers, and funny thing was that after that I had both screens. So I was happy, but until first powercycle, I turned ntb ON and I have only one screen again. I see two displays in device manager (I don't know if I should see here three or not), but windows recognizes only one of my EIZOs. Both screens are OK, cables OK. I just have only one output. I tried also fn+screens all settings, nothing. I don't remember if I had this issue before, since as I was using this setup for years without any problem. P.S.: thinkvantage system update is still pushing me into installing nVidia drivers, but I have them, installed them from the system update. I don't know why and I red that other people have this issue too. Thanks for any help

I had downloaded Windows XP on my Portege 7200 (with 256 MB external memory) and it worked well. Suddenly, it started overheating and was extremely sluggish. I reformatted the disk, downloaded XP again and it appears to work well, even though slowly;

however it refuses to acknowledge the extrernal memory and appears to be working with the 64 MB internal memory only.
Is this an external memory (hardware) port problem or can I do something to fix this?

Answer:Portege 7200 doesn't recognize external memory

Hi,

have you tried to use the 256MB memory module in another computer?
Maybe the module itself became faulty.

I just purchased an Acomdata HD040FE 40G External Firewire Hard Drive. I have a Compaq (didn't know any better at the time) 5736 which came with win98 but also has firewire ports which my son has used for editing digital video from his Panasonic DV camera. The drive stated it worked with win98se and above so I upgraded to win98se. I installed all the updates including the win98se firewire update plus updated the firewire controller drivers but the computer still doesn't recognize the drive. I've even tried going into DOS to do an fdisk but the only drive that shows up is my C: hard drive. The DV camera is still recognized. I tried the Acomdata web site but not alot of info is posted there. I tried calling them but got a message to leave my name and number followed by a message that voice mail was unavailable. (That gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling.) They responded to my email by telling me to run the firewire update, which I tried again. Still can't get the computer to recognize the drive. I've now decided to turn to the experts" you! Anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions? Thanks.

Running windows 7 (32bit) as an upgrade from Vista and couldnt get most external devices to work because of driver problems. Talked to Microsoft and they found that my drivers are still there but cant find them unless I tell them where to look and so every device I plug in I need to browse to install drivers twice for.

Any body got ideas how to fix this?

Answer:Satellite A300 - Windows 7 doesn't recognize external devices

Hi doug47,

To be honest I think I can?t help you because I don?t know what you want to know exactly.

Which external devices you mean? Not for all you need drivers, like USB sticks, external HDDs, etc. Such drives will be recognized automatically (plug & play) and they are read to use after connecting.

If you mean printer or mobile phones there you need additional drivers. You can get it from the manufacture.

HELP

Answer:Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 250GB "no external drive selected"

This is really a question for Maxtor customer support, since the drive works in windows the drive is fully working as far as my help goes, notice the maxtor helper doesn't detect any drives and you have many connected, I would first try reinstalling and updating the maxtor application, I would also try removing some of the other drives you have connected since there are Five.

Try this, go to control panel, admin tools, computer management , diskmanagement , right click drive and make sure your backup partition is marked as active, since it shows in my computer it should already be.

Right click the drive in computer, properties, security and make sure you have full admin privileges.

I have two separate drives. C has windows 7 and D has Windows XPsp3. C used to be Windows 98 before I upgraded it to win7. Back then I had Norton ghost 12 in my D drive. Ghost 12 would recognize both the c and d drives.

When I upgraded the C drive to win7, Norton Ghost 12 didn't recognize the either drive anymore, so to rectify the situation I upgraded to Norton Ghost 15 in both drives.

Now Norton ghost 15 doesn't recognize either drive when I am in my XP drive but does recognize both when I am in my Win7 drive. I get the following error below.

I just installed a DVD-RW in place of the DVD-ROM drive.  The computer still says the DVD-ROM is installed.  I tried removing it in windows device drivers but it still brings up the old drive.   I went into the BIOS and can't find anything in there for the Multimedia drives.   What do I need to do in order to use the DVD-RW drive? I found a Driver Update Utility I'm wondering if that's all that I need, just doesn't have the proper drivers to recognize the drive maybe?

Just a little more information.  Last night I tried doing a Lenovo firmware update for the multi-media drives.  Even with the new drive installed it doesn't recognize that its a DVD-RW Multi-drive, it still shows the DVD-ROM drive.  I did a BIOS update as well with no luck.   Does anyone know of a solution to get my DVD-RW drive installed properly and working?

About 2 years old HP laptop with (from Device Manager) an HP TS-L633M DVD-RW drive. So far I've found no consistent data except that some DVD's (original, commercial movie DVD's) it simply won't recognize. I doubt if this is a codec problem as the problem isn't simply that it won't play the movie, the problem is that it won't recognize the disk. After 2 years' use I might believe the drive has developed a problem except that it still works fine for most disks. So does anybody have any ideas what might be different about the disks it doesn't recognize? So far they work fine in my wife's HP laptop (same model but a year newer so it has an HP TS-L633N DVD-RW drive).

So far I haven't been able to find anything consistently different between the disks the drive does recognize and those it doesn't so at this point I'd even appreciate guesses.

Thanks.

Forgot to mention the OS is Win7 Home Premium 64-bit, Service Pack 1.

Is your laptop old or new...was it working before, then all the sudden quit working...if so...did you do something (i.e. install an app. or change a setting elsewhere, etc, etc) immediately before it crapped out on you????

I have a Toshiba Satellite L655D laptop. I've played DVD movies quite a bit using the DVD drive with no problem. Then sporadically the DVD drive would not play a DVD and would give an error message that there was no disc in the drive. Now DVD's don't play at all. CD's play fine. The other odd part is this - I have made copies of several of my movies for my own backup, and the burned copies play fine, but the original DVD's do not play. I tried reinstalling the drivers, disabling and reinstalling the drive, but nothing helps. Time for a new drive? Or does someone have a different fix I could try? Thanks for any help you can offer. This is a newer laptop (although just out of warranty, of course!).

I just did a fresh reinstall on a laptop. I installed Windows 7 from a disk about a week ago. Everything worked well for a week and now I was given the laptop back and the cd/dvd drive doesn't work. I would guess that the computer is less then a year old and everything else works fine. I put any disk in it makes the noise like its reading and then nothing. It pops open and says insert disk. Everything looks clean, I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, there is no spyware or viruses or anything. Anybody have a suggestion on what to do next?

Just started doing this. I have 2 hard drives. C & D. Upon cold boot up it doesn't recognize D, in the bios or windows.
If I hit F8 and run in safe mode, then it recognizes both. I can then reboot & everything is fine.
Its been working fine for 3 years. Running Win XP, sp3 C is IDE, D is SATA

I have a 2003 Gateway 500S personal computer for home use.

My dvd drive quit working. I have checked its properties and it says the driver is operating properly yet whenever I put a disk in it the driver says there is nothing there.

I have tried several dvd's and also a cd. It always says the drive is empty. I tried uninstalling my drivers and reinstalling them. I tried doing a windows update, disk cleanup, disk defrag, and I also tried doing a system restore back to February 1 when I know it was working. I noticed on May 14 microsoft automatic updates installed windows xp service pack 3. I don't know if that is the problem though or not. I noticed when I did the system restore I got a message saying that I had a "stop error" because a device driver installed on my computer caused windows to stop unexpectedly.

My driver was working before I had downloaded a DVD Shrink program. It was also working when I was using a 30 day free trial of DVD Fab. I checked all of my connections and they are good. I have exhausted myself trying everything I can think of so now I am turning to you to see if you can help me.

I recently purchased the DVD Fab program and tried installing it (since the one I had already installed only had a 30 day free trial which had expired) but I don't think that is the problem. I think it might be the driver.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

I am using Windows XP on a four year old Toshiba Satellite. The CDRW drive reports that the blank CDR's and CDRW's I insert are full or that there is no CD in the drive, but "properties" tells me that the drive is working correctly. The same CD's work fine in a different Toshiba laptop. I can't back up now. Can anyone suggest what to do? Thanks!

Recently bought Athlon64 3200+, Gigabyte K8NF-9 F11, 1GB RAM & 250GB SATA seagate hard disk. The problem here is that the BIOS (Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG) recognizes the harddisk to be only 130GB. Does Gigabyte K8NF-9 supports SATA 250GB hard disk or its's something I've done wrong? Pls help me out here. Thanks.

Answer:BIOS can't recognize 250GB SATA hard disk

I had a similar problem, I thought it may apply to you.

When I first installed my XP Pro on my system with a new Seagate 250 GB HDD, XP created the C: drive at 125 GB, basically cutting the disc space in half. The rest was just unformatted.

Go to "disc management", and you might find your missing 120 GB in unformatted space.

My computer suddenly stopped recognizing my dvd drive. when I go into the control panel it shows that it is there but it has a code 19 error. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall, but it will not complete the uninstall process. It goes about one eighth of the way across the progress bar and the dialog box disappears. When I go back to the control panel it does not show up in the list until I reboot. When I reboot, it still does not show up in the file explorer.

I have a Packard Bell NoteBook the HDD of which I'm trying to replace the old 120GB HDD with a 60GB SSD, this was formatted and I'm trying to install Win7 via a USB. The problem is when I get to the stage where I'm asked where I would like to install it nothing shows, just clear no options at all. The message I get is "there might be something wrong with a recent hardware installation" I have checked the fitting and it is Ok. I have tried putting it back in it's caddy where it was recognized using another PC, I loaded a few music files on it and it was OK, accepted and played. Reinstall in the Packard and same thing happened. Sorry to be so long winded but I'm completely flummoxed.

Since my Acer 5315 has Vista on it, I decided to buy the same hard drive in the Acer laptop. Bios sees the Hitachi drive with exact model number but XP doesn't even recognize that there is a hard drive. I tried using Booting Cd and I was able to format and delete the Linux distro that I put on this drive earlier because since XP didn't work I figured maybe XP would find the Linux operating system. I was wrong. I then went thru using Windows 98 fdisk, format and then it formatted the entire drive and is insrtalling Windows 98 on this drive. Will XP see the Windows 98 installation or will I be back to square one ?

Ideally the best way to install XP is for XP to see the drive but it doesn't Might someone have any ideas how to get XP to see the Hitachi drive so I can install XP ?

Thanks

Answer:XP doesn't recognize my Sata drive

It's all a bit confusing....which drives have which operating systems installed?

I made the mistake of leaving my laptop open and accessible to my 2 year old. When I came back, he was tapping away. By the time I got to it, it had shut off. I thought he simply turned it off. When I turned it back on and tried listening to internet radio, I couldn't get any sound. Went to check the volume, and the volume icon was no longer there. I checked audio options and couldn't figure it out. So I put a cd and a dvd in and neither was recognized. I went to "My Computer" and the drive wasn't listed. I tried several things including saving a file in Notepad (as I saw in a previous thread on this site) but nothing worked.

Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated!

I've been having this issue with my laptop after installing a newly formatted drive where XP refuses to install. I know about the AHCI/SATA issues, but my laptop has a Phoenix BIOS which doesn't allow me to change any advanced BIOS options, including disabling AHCI. Help!

Answer:XP Doesn't Recognize Hard Drive

I had the same problem on my HP laptop awhile back. After loading all the drivers, the installation said it couldn't locate the hard drive. I also thought it was a SATA/AHCI problem. After fiddling with all sorts of drivers, I switched "SATA native mode" to off and that's what worked. Hope this helps.

Hello,
The DVD/RW writer on my laptop doesn't recognize the CD that I insert. When ever I insert a new or used CD, a message box appears "please insert CD". I cannot read, write or make back up's at all. Please help me fix this problem.

It's a Sony Vaio laptop with a Vista Home Premium OS. The DVD/RW drive was working just fine when I tried about 3-4 months ago. So restoring to a point doesn't help much as I can't remember the exact date it was working and the Vista restore points are of very recent dates.

I have done the following:
Clean boot of the system to see if any start up items are interfering with the running of the DVD/RW drive, but that is not the case.
When I check the DVD/RW drive properties, it shows device is working properly.
Checked the upper/lower filters as suggested by someone on this forum but these filters don't seem to exist
Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver again just in case but nothing works.
.

Thanks

I am trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate Edition, 32-bit version, on my older PC. I got a virus, so I figured it was a good time to upgrade. I currently run Windows XP Pro. I have a PE845MAX2 motherboard. When I try to install it, I get to the screen where they are asking me where to install Windows 7. It does not recognize any drives, and asks me to browse for drivers. I have installed the SATA drivers ( I double clicked on the .exe driver file but saw no results), and disabled RAID in my bios. Still having the problem. Can you help me diagnose this problem? Thanks.

I have a Gateway AMD with Athlon chip running Win98SE and IE6.  This computer will not recognize a slave drive, even after I set up Bios for Auto recog.  Deleted Root Hubs in an effort to reorganize, no luck.  Have a HP2355 Printer on one USB and a camera on the other.  I am getting exasperated to say the least.  Nothing seems to work.  Anyone have any ideas?  The slave is set for slave (checked and double checked) and the Master is set for Master.  I can take the slave out in put it into another computer and it works fine.Jim

Answer:Doesn't recognize slave drive

Zevron:Do you see the slave hard drive in the BIOS setup?  If the BIOS doesn't recognize it, Windows will not, either.  Is this an external hard drive connected to a USB port?  If so, Windows 98 SE may need drivers installed before it will be able to access the drive.Let us know if you need more help.Doc

I have a year-old Acer Aspire (I know, I know!). I have no problem playing CDs - the computer recognizes them immediately and asks me which program I want to use to run the CD. BUT, when I put in a DVD, not only does it not start up automatically, My Computer doesn't recognize that there is a DVD inserted. It just sits there - no whirring sound - nothing. Although the computer is now a year old, this is the first time I've tried a DVD so I can't be certain if this problem came with the computer or if something has happened recently to cause this. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer:Computer doesn't recognize DVD drive

You need to install video codecs on your computer, because many computers have the drive, but not the codecs. Download these, there completely free!!!
