help trying to initialize an external hard drive on xp home ed

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i may not know enough about the problem to completly describe it...but i will begin......an 80 gig external hard drive was given to me..it was rebuilt on a win 2000 system....my home edition of win xp--reconginzes it....as disk 1- in disk manager....however it is not formatted or able to be found, and does not have a drive letter assigend to it... i logged on as "administrator" ...in safe mode, to see if i could get the drive path settings option to come up in disk manager ...i could not-------does any of this make any sense to anyone?.......that option still does not come up..under user or administrator...in disk managment--so it is unformatted and has no drive letter......thus xp cannot find it......

Preferred Solution: maxtor external hard drive unformatted and undesignated by drive letter

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: maxtor external hard drive unformatted and undesignated by drive letter

What size is the hard drive?

Do you know what motherboard you have?

STEP 1: CHECK POWER (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Verify that the drive light and the light on the AC adapter (power supply) is illuminated normally.
It is sometimes necessary to contact Technical Support for troubleshooting and/or possibly to replace the power supply if it behaves unusually.

STEP 2: CHECK CABLING (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Confirm that your USB/Firewire cable is firmly connected in a port that is on the rear of your desktop computer (if you have a desktop).
Try another USB or Firewire port.
If your drive is powered only by USB, such as the FreeAgent Go, the Maxtor OneTouch mini, and the Seagate Portable drive, then the drive's cable has two USB connectors. Try connecting both of the free USB connectors into a USB port for maximum power availability.
Avoid connecting the drive via a USB hub for now.

STEP 3: WINDOWS SERVICE PACKS

Follow these instructions to ensure that your installation of Windows XP/2000 has been updated to the latest Windows Service Pack.

Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties.

The System Properties window will appear. On the General tab (which will be at the front), see the "System:" information.

For Windows 2000: Update to Service Pack 4.

For Windows XP: Update to Service Pack 2.

Allow your computer to complete the installation of the Service Pack.

Reboot the computer and connect the drive. Turn it on and see if the drive is detected now.

STEP 4: CHECK DISK MANAGEMENT (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Check Disk Management to see if the drive is detected there.

Right-click on My Computer, select Manage, select Disk Management.

Check the upper window to find whether the drive letter is present.

Check the lower window to find whether the drive is detected (such as, Disk 1, Disk 2, etc).

If it is detected as with a drive letter, verify no other device is already using that drive letter. If it is, change the drive letter of the external drive to some unused letter (click here to see more instructions on how to do so).

If changing the drive letter is not possible or the drive does not have a drive letter at all, attempt to reformat the drive (click here to see more instructions on how to do so). This will erase any data on the drive, but since the drive is brand new, there is nothing to erase on it.

If it is still not detected, proceed to Step 4.

STEP 5: CHECK DEVICE MANAGER (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

Verify that your Windows installation contains the most recent Service Pack.

In the left column of Computer Management, click on Device Manager.

Look for the drive?s model number/name in Disk drives (a category under Device Manager).

It will probably not be there. If it is, test the drive on another computer if you can.

If it is not there, check under Other devices (a category under Device Manager).

If under Other devices an Unknown device appears, double-click on it.

Under the General tab, we would expect to see "This device is not working properly" and either (Code 28) or (Code 10).

If Code 10 appears, the drive has most probably failed.
Double-check that you have installed the most up-to-date Windows Service Pack.
Verify by trying the drive with another USB cable or port, or on another computer.
If none of this gets the drive detected, you can begin a replacement order online, or, since the drive is new, you can usually exchange the faulty unit for a replacement at your place of purchase (please contact the place of purchase for a full explanation of their policy regarding returns).

If Code 28 appears, you will need to test the drive on another computer. If the drive works fine on another computer, follow the procedure in this Knowledge Base article?s Step 11.

STEP 6: CONNECT TO ANOTHER PC (click for expanded instructions further down the page)

The final troubleshooting step is to rule out any problem with the computer itself. This is most easily accomplished by connecting the drive to another computer that has either Windows Vista or XP/2000 (not 2000 Server or 2003 Server). If similar symptoms follow the drive to the 2nd computer, the probability that the drive is faulty is increased.
If similar symptoms do not follow the drive to the 2nd computer, the problem may well lie in the original computer. You will then need to start further troubleshooting on the computer itself.

Hi
i have a Seagate ST30000CB 1 TB External hard drive which i've had for about 2 years.
Its been running fine ever since until today. i turned on my computer to access it and it came up as Local Disk (H
(I named it Sea Disk so i knew something was wrong.)
I went to open it and it said:
The disk in Drive H is not formatted
Do you want to format it now?
Yesterday I put in a second internal hard drive temporarily to access the data on it and then removed it, turned my computer back on and i was able to access my external at that point. Any idea what i should do? I have about 300GB of stuff i would like not to lose. Thank You

My external usb hard drive was connected to a pc which crashed. On rebooting and trying to use the drive it tells me it is not formatted. Do you know anyway to recover the data? It was my main backup and contains a friends itunes collection and guess what his pc has died. I can only assume that the mbr has been garbled but know no way of getting in to rewrite it. It is a Maxtor 320GB. Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks in advance.

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)

I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.

The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.

How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

If there is no easy way then how do I stop program updates for Adobe etc. failing because they can not find the F drive. I don't know why they look at that drive anyway.

Help.

Answer:External Hard Drive - Drive Letter changed - unable to change back

Hi PAMDILL,

Welcome aboard.

Try this:

Download drivecleanup.zip V 0.8.1 from

Drive Tools for Windows

Unzip to a folder. In it you will have two folders Win32 and x64, each containing DriveCleanup.exe for Windows 32bit and 64 bit respectively.

Now unplug all the USB devices from your PC (except of course the Keyboard and mouse), right click on the appropriate DriveCleanup.exe for your system and run it as an administrator.

This will remove all non-present drives from the registry.

Reboot and then plug-in your external drive.

The drive will be installed and hopefully you should be able to assign any free drive letter to it.

Please report whether it resolved your problem.

i can't get my puter to read the data on an external hard drive. wants me to format it even though it recognizes the drive letter i gave it when i did format it. don't want to lose the 100+ gigs of data i have on this drive.

Answer:my computer recognizes the drive letter but not the data on external hard drive

Does the external drive work on another machine?

Also, while the drive is still connected, can you go into Device Manager (right-click My Computer, click on 'Manage...', click on 'Device Manager') to check for any yellow exclamation marks or red crosses next to anything in there?

My External Hard Drive (My Book) was always Drive letter F.

I went to sleep and woke up to find Windows 7 Pro had updated and rebooted and I was welcomed by my login screen.

Consequently now my My Book external HDD now reads as Drive letter G.

I went into Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

Drive letter F is not available.

F is assigned to a drive that does not exist and never has. I am confused. I only have one CD drive and it says now that I have 2 even though the one addressed as F doesn't have any information. If I click on F it says "Insert Disk"

Answer:External Hard Drive (F) Drive Letter changed to G - Can't change back

Update: The mysterious other CD Rom drive seems to be MagicJack.

I did some research but the following tech help did NOT work as you can see by the previous post picture that it doesn't not show it up in Disk Management:

I have an old BYTECC hard drive enclosure. Trying to use it on an older XP system for back up. Got a bunch of 40G hard drives I can use.

The OS will detect the external drive is connected and powered up, arrow shows in the tray for a USB drive, checked the device manager and it sezs the drive is there and operating properly, recognizes it, but does not assign a drive letter.

AIDA32 sezs it is there but same deal shows no drive letter.

I've tried four different hard drives with the same results. I know the hardware works on other computers, this particular computer USB works with other canned external drives, it reads a flash memory stick as a drive no problem. I know the BYTECC is set up properly, should be the same as with other computers. Works ok on a Win2000 system.

What could be the problem? Is there something to tweak?
I do know this XP system would not read hard drives that had been formatted on non-XP computers before. Don't exactly know what systems all these drives were formatted on. Isn't making any sense to me at the moment. Doing it just like I did on the Win2000 system with other drives, everything worked as it should.

Thinking I could try to slap one of the drives in as a slave and try to format it that way, hopefully can get it to be read as a USB drive instead.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer:Solved: External hard drive not assigned a drive letter

If the drive shows up in Disk Management (Start/Run/diskmgmt.msc/OK), right-click the drive icon or the area showing the drive below, select "Change drive letter and paths". In the next window click "Add". Next window click the radio button for "Assign the following drive letter". Select a drive letter. Click OK.

Is there any way to keep the same drive letter (in this case, E) for my external hard drive?  I plugged a printer into my laptop yesterday, and how my EHD has become drive F. Now none of my shortcuts or file locations work any more.  The EHD is a plug-and-play device connected via a USB port.1) Can I change it back to E somehow?2) Can I set it so that it will always be drive E?I've tried removing the printer and the hard drive, then rebooting with just the hard drive.I've tried uninstalling the hard drive via device manager, reconnecting and rebooting.  It still says F.My next thought is to do a system restore back a couple days, but even if I do this, I'd like to know if there is a way to permanently assign drive E to this device.Thank you!!

Answer:External Hard Drive - Drive Letter Changed

Well, it looks like I may have solved my own problem:START --> Control Panel  --> Administrative Tools  --> Computer Management. In the left pane, expand Storage, and then choose Disk Management.  Select the external hard drive and from the right-click menu, select Change Driver Letter and Paths.  Select the drive, click the Change button, and then change the letter in the drop-down box.

Lately, my HD Passport has been changing from J:/ to H:/ and stays there. I end up having to go to "Run" and go to "Regedit.exe" and renaming H:/ to J:/, and then restarting. But then I'll go out along my business, I'll hear the sound like something has been disconnected, and reconnected right after. It's like my hard drive is disconnecting by itself and changing to a letter drive I DON'T want. When I leave it alone, it'll have the sound it disconnected again and reconnect, but it doesn't change from H:/. It stays at H:/. I don't think it's a virus. So why do you think this is so? And how can I fix it?

Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this to work?

select open folders to view files using windows explorer.

You may also check on the other settings tabs.

If this does not work or the USB device is not listed in my computer
take it back to the shop and get them to demonstrate, on another pc that it is working.

Answer:Maxtor 6 external Hard Drive

First, try it on another computer. If it works there or not will tell you whether you have a computer problem or a drive problem. You need to know that before you know which direction your further diagnostics should take.

It has files and folders included with my files that I was wondering if ok to delete, or at least backup to a data cd and remove from the drive. They are:

Folders:
MacOneTouch.app
Bin
drivers
EULA (contains .rtf files)
guides

Files:
autorun.inf
launch.ini

I am setting up a new computer running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I attached an old 500GB USB 2.0 hard drive. System notification showed the driver was successfully installed. However when I looked for the drive in Windows Explorer, it did not show up under Computer.

I ran Microsoft's Computer Management application. Under Disk Management, I see that the drive does not have a drive letter (see attached screenshot). However when I right-click on the drive, the option to assign a drive letter is grayed out. I searched Microsoft's documentation, but the only reason I could find for not being able to assign a drive letter would be if the disk was a system partition or boot partition. But this is just an ordinary HDD that I want to use for backups. What am I doing wrong?

Answer:Cannot add a drive letter to an external hard drive

Try to reformat it with NTFS if there is nothing on it. Use Partition Wizard free if Disk Management won't

I purchased an external USB2 hard drive case (that has a power cable and USB output cable) and installed a 120GB Seagate drive. It seems like my laptop (running XP, USB1) will recognize the drive when I plug it in (as an USB Mass Storage device) but it does not give it a drive letter (like E) for me to access it. I have tried changing the Master, Slave, Cable Select jumper on the drive with no success. When I plug in a USB thumb drive, my laptop assigns a drive letter and I can access it via Windows Explorer with no problems, but with the 120 GB external drive, I have no luck? The drive shows up under the Control Panel.....Device Manager as a hard drive just under my laptop drive, but there is no way to store files on this external drive. Any suggestions?

Answer:USB External Hard drive - no drive letter

Hello and welcome... You may need to configure the drive in winXP for it to be seen properly.

Go here...
Control Panel---> adminstrative tools---> computer management---> disk management...

Does it see the hard there? I believe it will show up as Disk1... Select it and format it, you can also change the drive letter if you would like

Good luck,
G

Hello all,

Here is my situation: I have an external Maxtor one touch 200 gig hard drive that I connect to my work laptop. I plugged in my external hard drive via USB cable and booted up my laptop. I hadn't realized that I left my hard drive on. I received a Windows XP screen that appeared to be analyzing my drive, when I saw the line of text about writing or failing to find I boot sector I immediately cut power to the external hard drive. Now every time I load Windows my F: drive appears(external hard drive) but when I try to access data, it says the drive is not functional or inaccessible.

Below are my specs of my machine:

System: Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version2002
Service Pack 2

Processor: 2.00ghz
1.00 GB of Ram.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

I got a free Maxtor external hard drive from a co worker who is basically computer illiterate. It is a maxtor model #3000ls, 40 gig capacity, FAT 32 file system, with a spin rate of 5400rpms. I plugged it in and it works but when I checked the properties there is only about 328 mbs total size and only 300mbs of available space. I did a virus scan, tried to a do an scan to automatically  fix any  file system errors and also did a scan for and attempt to recover any bad sectors. I got nothing and it still has only 328mbs of total space. Is this thing shot???  Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Problems with my Maxtor external hard drive

1.  Root Directory.  How many files are in the root directory within that FAT32 file system?2.  Disk Management.  View the disk's structure within Disk Management to see how it's reported.  To access, select "Start" -> right-click "My Computer" -> select "Manage" -> within "Storage" category on left pane of "Computer Management" window, select "Disk Management".

Hi guys, hoping to pick your collective brains on this one as I'm awaiting a reply from Maxtor/Seagate's email help. My maxtor 3200 series external hard drive won't power on properly anymore. When it worked, once the power cord was connected you could hear thew hard drive whirr into life, and the green light at the front of the unit would emit a solid, bright glow. At the moment, there are no noises whatsoever emanating from the unit, and the front light only flashes, very faintly and intermittently. I've tried two power cables, both of which work on other paraphanalia I've got lying around and I get the same results; so my presumption is that the unit itself is at fault. What does everyone reckon? Could the flashing faint light be something as simple as a loose power connection? Or is it indicative of a more serious problem? Further - whats the likelihood of being able to retrieve data from a knackered external hard drive if the worst has happened? Thanks, Dom

Answer:Maxtor external hard drive problem

No noises whatsoever would indicate the drive is dead. Though possibly a loose connection within the drive casing. As for data recovery, that is another thing altogether. It depends on how valuble the data is to you and whether is is worth the expense (very expensive) of employing a firm who specialise in this field.

Answer:maxtor 320GIG external hard drive

Hi

whats the full message it gives when it asks for right drivers, any error code given?

As your mobo has USB2.0 built in anyway this drive should have no issues, but what I woudl try is to delete the USB driver for this drive, to do this unplug any other USB drives and pens, then open Device Manager and open the USB Controller branch and then plug in the drive and you should see a USB Mass Storage Device listed right click this and uninstall, then unplug and replug the drive in and the driver should be re-installed.

hey, I have a External Maxtor 750GB OneTouch 4 Plus drive and I slightly bumped it over the other day while watching a video on it. Now when I plug in my drive it says in the task manager "new hardware found" (im using XP by the way) but when I go to device manager I can't seem to find the drive. My drive now makes beeping and grinding noises for the first three minuets when I give power to it but the drive still seems to spin. Is there much I can do to possibly get my data back besides taking the case apart and plugging it in internally?

Answer:External Maxtor hard drive problem

It sounds like the hard drive itself is damaged and not the enclosure. If so, installing it internally won't do any good. You could always try the freezer trick but I'm not so sure it will work here but you have nothing to lose. If your data if particularly valuable, there is always professional data recovery services. On the other hand if your data was that valuable, likely you would have your data backed up.

Hi,

As with a few people on here, I have had an issue with my once thought 'always reliable' Maxtor 300 GB External Hard Drive. Then the inevitable occurred, and as I was writing to it, an error occurred, and computer kind of half froze, so I stupidly pulled out the USB Cable. Now when I plug the hard drive in, it doesn't even recognise it, nor when I try it out on other computers.

So it seemed like the next step was to pull it out of its case, and connect it to my home computer as a secondary drive. Got a friend over to do that for me, and now under disk managament, it says it is "unallocated", and seems like I can't access it. I tried to "Initialize" it, but doesn't seem to be doing anything.

So I guess my first question is what is this whole "initialize" command, as far as I have read, it is always the first step in formatting my drive (which is the LAST thing I want to do - did I say this data I have is unbacked up and priceless to me?). Is there any other suggestions people have for me?

Thanks in anticipation, cheers David.

Hi,

My Maxtor External Drive became corrupted and I needed to re-format the drive.

Unfortunately, while Working in Windows XP I accidentally deleted the partition and the drive.

Now I can't get Windows XP to recognize the Maxtor Drive. I tried re-booting the PC and plugging in the Maxtor USB Cable, but this did not work. The Maxtor Drive was my H: Drive.

Can anyone help me get Windows to recognize my Maxtor Drive?

When I deleted the drive I was working in the "Computer Management" Screen.

I navigated to this screen through the following path: Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Answer:Installing Maxtor External Hard Drive

The drive should show in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/computer mangement/disk management, but without a drive letter.
Right click the drive and click add partition.
Then right click it and click format.
Formatting will take a while.

I am having problems with the external HD on my PC.
Yesterday I pulled out the cable from it to the PC by mistake. When I re-started the PC a black screen came up with a message saying that NTFS (I think) wasn't working and it needed to scan or check for something. I glanced through the message briefly and it was on a countdown unless I tapped any key on the keyboard. I reached to do this too late and a speedy roll of delete something or other continuously scrolled up. I ended up turning off the PC manually to stop this.
I haven't a clue what it is or what it did, but the PC is now crawling along. The external hard-drive is showing empty, but I can access all the files on it. The problem is that the files are not happy being moved, copied or attached to emails. When I go to the image files they will not show icons without contacting administrator. All sorts of other stuff has probably happened that I don't know about.
IE is at a snail's pace and then seizes and 'not responding'.
Help!!!!

Answer:Maxtor External Hard Drive problems

I would try running the chkdsk /r command on the drive.

Go to My Computer, select the drive, right-click on it, select Properties.

Follow the instructions under Starting Check Disk at http://www.hard-drive-help.com/chkdsk.html , putting check marks in both options.

I have a Maxtor External Hard drive....80GB Model 5000LE.
A While back I had a "device error" and searched the web to try to solve it. I guess from what I remember it had something to do with a bad file and it took too long to open up the file in the drive and it timed out or something. Anyway....I defragmented the drive and ran scan disk...problem solved..some files were deleted....kind of upset but not a big deal. Well, it happened again. This time instead a a specific file I could not get into (all these were mp3's and music videos etc...) the main folder (Ex:Jenna's Music and Videos) It kept on timing out......there are over 4000 music files in there. About 40 GB's worth. I couldn't even open the main file. SOOOOO I ran scan disk....defragmented...only this time when I finished the whole folder is gone!! I right click on the drive and it still says the space is being used but I cannot find my music/video files??? I ran file search and everything but I don't know where they are???? HELP!! Are these lost for good? If so...something is taking up the space correct??? No clue what is going on. Thanks.

I have a Maxtor 5000 LE 80gb external hard drive using a USB
interface that I use for storing backup copys of my system. I
would like to be able to use this as a second hard drive when
I am surfing the net or downloading new programs. Is it possible to have my system set up in a way that it would ask me which
drive I would like to access to gain access to my stored programs
and stay in that drive until I request a switch back to my main
drive, which is slowly filling up. I hope I have made my request
clear and look forward to receiving whatever input I get, thanks.

Frank.

Answer:Maxtor 5000 LE External hard drive.

You should be able to that without any problem. Whenever you install a program you are usually given an option of what drive you want to install to; just select the new drive.

Same goes for downloading files, on the Save To screen just select the drive letter corresponding the the external drive and save it there. You can create folders by using My Computer on the drive.

Ahh I'm so mad! Please bear with me through all this because I really need help!

I'm working on my undergrad research project which involves taping birds with my digital camcorder. I've been working on it for like a month, and have been saving the videos in folders on my desktop. Earlier today, I took all the videos from the desktop and cut pasted them onto a new Maxtor 230 (I think it's 230, could be off) external harddrive - so everything was moved from the desktop to the external harddrive in order to free up space on the computer.

A few hours later, I had another set of videos, so I plugged the camra and the harddrive both in and was transfering the video from the camra directly to the harddrive. My sister and her baby went on the computer while I was waiting for the video to finish transfering, and I clearly told her not to let the baby touch the wires or the harddrive. Well next thing you know, my sister is telling me that the baby not only touched it, she pulled the USB cord thing out of the back of it, then my sister plugged it back it. Now I'm not sure if the video was still transfering at this time or if it was finished.

So I wanted to make sure everything was ok and see if the video went on the hard drive ok - but long story short, the external harddrive isn't working anymore. It still lights up when I plug it in - I checked all the connections and everything, plugged it into all the diffrent USB ports, plugged it into my laptop - ... Read more

About 6 months ago I installed a 500-Gig Maxtor External HD I use as a "back-up" source. When I first installed it, it worked fine. Then I had a system crash and had to re-install WindowsXP Pro. Now this external drive is not recognized. A drive icon is also not displayed in My Computer.

In System Hwde Devices, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the (Maxtor 500-Gig) USB Mas Storage Device. I have made several attempts to uninstall this drive and re-install it but the same identical message appears each time: Mass Storage Device Not Recognized.

I'm also getting a Code 39 error code informing me that the drivers for this device are either missing or corrupted.

Some time ago I was told that I would have to uninstall and re-install Windows XP Pro if I wanted to correct this issue. Is this true?

My brother gave me his older Maxtor Hard Drive, the One Touch but he threw tha manual away, it gave with this "base" or plastic thing that would let the maxtor stand. And I am not sure if I am suppose to attack this hard drive with the stand. I think it is inconvenient because I bring my hard drive to different places.

Here is a Maxtor One Touch, laying down:

Here is a Maxtor One Touch with a base/stand and standing:

So here are some questions:
_1) What is the propery way to use my One Touch?
__a) I must always use it standing up with a stand?
__b) I could use it standing up, or laying down, doesn't matter even if the ____Disk's are verticle or parrallel to gravity?

_2) How do I properly turn off the External Hard Drive?
__a) Safely Remove Plug and Play?
__b) Or I could just press the off button?
__c) dont do ANYTHING ur hard drive will die, just turn off computer then ____turn off the drive?

_3) How come everytime I add and remove data, copy and paste, and I wait a few seconds to make sure the drive isn't active, I can't safely remove hardware?

4) Is it better to keep the external hard drive on all day? or turn it off after each use? what happens if I keep on turning it on and off because I keep on saving backup data every 2 hours?

Thanks, for any help I can get man.

Answer:How do I use my Maxtor One Touch External Hard Drive Properly?

If you copy data data to it regularly leave it on.
If you only use it once a day, just turn it on then turn it off.

Use the "Safely Remove" hardware icon,or
if it`s got a power switch use that.

It will work vertically and horizontally.

Don`t bang it,or submerse it in boiling acid.

I have a 250G Maxtor external hard-drive which I took from the shelf and plugged in last night for the first time in several months. At first I noticed the light blinking erratically and also heard a constant clicking sound, the same sound over and over. I disconnected and then reconnected it, and this time the unit worked okay. I was able to access the contents. Later I disconnected and reconnected it several more times, only to find that it no longer works. All I get now is the unending clicking sound.

As far as I know it has been setting on my shelf for three months or so. To my knowledge it hasn't been moved, much less dropped. Assuming that it is irretrievably broken, are all external hard-drives this fragile? I thought I had been storing my stuff relatively safely -- as long as I didn't drop the unit. Maybe I was wrong. I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help.

....I will seriously have a heart attack if I can't get this solved. I'm borderline an emotional breakdown right now. Excuse the length, I’m just letting you all know exactly what I did (well, from what I remember and to the best of my ability anyway). Sorry if some details are unnecessary; I just have to type it out (feel free to skim).
As stated in the title, I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 hard drive (500 GB) that I've had for about a year or so (maybe more, maybe less; my memory really sucks). Yesterday, when I put some WinRAR and WinZip files in one of my folders and extracted them, I realized that I couldn’t delete them afterward. When I tried to delete those .rar and .zip files, a pop up window came up saying that my hard drive is unreadable, corrupt, inaccessible…yada, yada, yada, and gave me the error code 0x80070571. I tried a few more times and it still didn’t work, so of course at that point I was like “wtf”. Afterward, I tried to copy some files onto the hard drive, and the same message came up.
That’s when I became worried.
Being the "optimist" that I am, I figured that maybe if I restart my laptop or disconnect and reconnect my hard drive, everything will be fine, but that hidden feeling of doom that I get at moments like these told me otherwise. I have the worst luck when it comes to electronics (especially lately…You don’t even want to know).
And, like always, that feeling was right.

Hi, what is the Model number of your drive? I assume it is a USB drive - is your computer USB2 compatible, because I suspect the drive is USB2, which I don't think is backward compatible to USB1.To find out if your pc is USB2 compatible ... Right-click on My Computer and then Left-click on Properties, then on Hardware then on Device Manager, then Left-click on the + beside Universal Serial Bus controllers - if you then see the word Enhanced anywhere within that section, then your PC is USB2 compatible. You can then just close all the small windows that you just opened. That will give us somewhere to start, to try to help you.

Have you tried different USB cables?

The unit makes a little noise like it's trying to work. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was at a loss when I opened the case. I accidentally caught my foot on the usb cord that was plugged into both the external hard drive and the computer. the hard drive fell over on the wood floor. the unit was sitting on the floor. my computer shows that the drive is being recogonized by the computer, but it wil not show any contents of the hard drive. can anyone help?

Answer:Maxtor external hard drive will not respond after if was knocked over on the floor

OK, bad news. The likely scenario is that you have damaged the mechanics of the drive, but the electronics are still functioning, hence the detection, but no initialization.

This is the point where it usually goes to a data recovery company, at considerable expense.

Drives are rated at a couple hundred G's impact force, non-operating, much less if they're spinning. A drop from 3 feet up to a hard floor likely exceeds either of those limits, and collaterally voids the warrant.

I know, I can be such a wet blanket.

That said, I both advise and consent to you waiting for a second, or more, opinion(s).

PS, If any of the trash talk about Maxtor has any credibility, (?), you should have been thankful it responded before it was dropped. Mine works OK, but then so does my Emachines.

I have a situation that isn't really a major problem, but is slightly annoying, and somewhat puzzling.

I have an external 1TB Iomega USB hard drive on my system. It is set to be Drive Y. Most of the time, everything is fine. But occasionally, after I boot the system, I'll get the pop up on the screen asking me what I want to do with Drive J. And yes, the "new" Drive J is, indeed, really my Iomega external drive. I can go into Disk Management, and reassign the drive letter back to Y, and everything is fine again.

Sometimes, it keeps the Y drive letter for several months at a time. But other times, the system treats it as a new drive and assigns drive letter J to it--in anywhere from a few days to several months after the previous time.

As I said, it doesn't happen often enough to be a problem, but I'm curious as to what causes it. Anyone have any insights into this little puzzle?

Answer:Changing External Hard Drive Letter

Look in your registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices. That's where drive letter assignments are stored. Find \DosDevices\Y: on the left side and note the data value on the right. The next time it happens, check the same registry location but find \DosDevices\J: and see if the data value is the same as before. Also see if there's still an entry for \DosDevices\Y:.

I have a new 120 gig external USB drive (105G free). It installed and seems to work fine except:
My prior system had hard drives C: and D:
cd reader drive E:
DVD/cd RW drive F:
four-way card reader G:, H:, I:, J: (these came and went depending if card reader was left plugged to the PC)
The new external installed correctly as drive K: and I succesfully backed up a zilllion photos.

After shutting down/startup the drive assignments redefine as
C: and E: Hard drives
D: as new external 105 GIG free
F: as CD reader
G: as DVD/CDR
H: as a second identical new external 105 GIG free (duplicates drive D
The four way card reader is unplugged-ran out of USP plugs.

I have two problems:
1. The duplicate external drive assignment is obviously wrong but I cannot make it go away.
2. I cannot make a backup program work correctly since the drive assignment keeps changing.

How can I "lock in" the hard drive and CD assignments so the external drive doesn't jump in the middle of that alphabet. I want the External drive to always be assigned some higher alpha letter so I can use it on different computers.

Can anyone provide me with assistance?I have an external USB hard drive which was originally assigned a Drive Letter M. I use this drive to store Norton Ghost Backups / restore points. The drive letter never changed, always remaining as M, even when the drive was switched on after boot up. Since using a SanDisk USB stick drive, the assignment for my External Hard Drive has changed to F. This will not be recognised for backups by Norton Ghost. I can still see the contents of my external drive in Explorer but it is now under Drive F.Is there any way I can re assign the correct letter to the External Hard Drive and also fix it so that it doesn't change in the future.Any assistance would be appreciated. Many thanks.Keith.

Hey guys, here's what's up. My external hard drive which usually becomes F: is now becoming L: regardless of what USB slot I put it in. Now I can't get to my music files through itunes or Windows Media because they're trying to find them in F. Changing USB slots is the only thing I've tried to do because it's the only thing that I thought to do. Do you guys have any ideas? Thanks

Answer:External Hard Drive Letter switch up

Right click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management. Right click on the drive in question in the lower right-hand panel. You'll get a pop-up menu; select 'Change drive letter and paths...' and just make your choices as prompted. I have attached a screen shot below so you can see what I'm talking about....

I hope this helps!

This past Friday, the 3rd December, 2004 while in the middle of a System Restore, my system was interrupted by a local power outage. Since then my Maxtor 5000/120 GB External Hard Drive has been acting oddly. I first noticed a problem when rebooting the system when a "CHKDisk" for my Maxtor Drive was scheduled, which seemed to take quite a long time during the first of 3 phases. During the first phase it simply kept listing files on the Maxtor which were "unreadable". I simply escaped from this and attempted to reboot. Each time I reboot, the "CHKDisk" begins again, even though it's easy to cancel it.

The next issue relates to "Add/Remove" Programs under the Control Panel for Windows. The Maxtor Drive prevents the "Add/Remove" Programs window from being populated.

All scans by NORTON are also prevented when it gets to scanning the Maxtor drive.

While it is usually easy to access any file in the Maxtor Drive, now it is laborious and no file opens without excessive wait times. All files appear to be there. I already reformatted the drive from Fat to NTFS at time of purchase.

Six times I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Maxtor software and disconnected the drive and reconnected it only to face the same problems I previously listed.

I contacted DELL, my cpu manufacturer but they were of little assistance...their Tech first had me go online to check for adware and spamware, then suggested I contact Maxto... Read more

Answer:Maxtor 5000/120GB External Hard Drive Presenting Problems...Can Anyone Help?

I think your hard drive got damaged because of the power outage.
If I where you, I would backup what I need from the hard drive and reformat it.
I don't think it's a problem with the software. It is more likely that it is the hard drive itself that is causing the problem, formatting the drive could solve your problems.

I'm running windows vista and I have a maxtor touch mini external hardrive. I've never had any problems with it. But now when I open My Computer the harddrive is nowhere to be seen. I'm all up to date w/ windows updates and when I go into Device Manage it says the device is working properly and is up-to-date w/ it's drivers. So what's the deal? I know my computer is registering the device is there because it makes the 'device inserted' noise and in the safely remove hardware tab the device appears as 'USB Mass Storage Device'. In disk management it shows up as Disk 1 (pretty sure it's referring to that anyway) It says it is unknown and uninitialized, when I try to initialize it an error message pops up that states device is not ready- under properties it says it's working properly and up to date w/ drivers. How can get access to my external harddrive? Please help!!!!!

Hi There,

My first post here and I promise I'll stick around and try help out others rather than simply disappear if and when someone's helped me out

My question concerns a Maxtor 3000LS 40GB external hard drive I bought recently. Naiively I assumed that it would get all its power from the USB cable and therefore I'd be able to use it in both the UK (where I am based now) and the US (where I will be based soon). However, when it arrived I realised that it needed an external power source. Serves me right for not reading the spec. properly I guess

Anyway, the power pack that it comes with splits in two i.e. the big chunky bit with the wire leading to the hard drive and the wire that leads to the mains. The hard drive came with two mains leads: A UK compatible lead and a mainland European lead. Now my query is, assuming that I could get hold of a US compatible mains lead, would plugging it into the chunky bit:

a) Not have enough power to do anything?
b) Frazzle the components?
c) Cause a rift in the space-time continuum?

I confess, I didn't pay much attention in physics class and so am a bit baffled by volts, amps, ohms, current and other flavours of electrickery so if anyone - preferably someone with knowledge of the hardware - could give any advice, then I'd be really grateful.
Many thanks,

Andy

Answer:Maxtor 3000LS External Hard Drive - Using International Power Sources

Look at the specs on the power supply. It may be a universal supply, many of them are nowadays. I just checked a camera and a USB 2.0 hard disk supply, both state 100V to 240V 50/60Hz, so they'll run either in Europe or the US.

ok i needed to reformat my computer and my external hard drive was plugged in as well. the xp disc was in and then my friend hit the down arrow and reformat selecting the external not the internal. before it got to 2% i turned my computer off. now when i plug the external in to the usb nothing shows up as being there. is there anyway that some of my stuff is still on it and if not how do i go about making it show up again? if anyone could help it would be highly appreciated. thanks

Answer:Maxtor A01A250 OneTouch 7200 RPM 250 GB External Hard Drive problem

in order to reformat you need to delete the existing partition. That part pretty much nuked your ability to see the data. You may try data recovery software(do a search). Or you can pay someone to do it for you(expensive). Depends on what you have on there and what it's worth to you. Don't get your hopes up though as there is no guarantee your data is recoverable.

I have Toshiba Satellite, in case that matters. I have drive C, D, E of course. I also have 2 external hard drives. G is for movies only. F is for backup. Anyway, yesterday I noticed that the letter F wasn't showing when I clicked on Computer. I went into Disk Management and tried to assign a letter but I saw 3 G letters. One was fine but the other two confused me. I tried to change each one but the letter F was missing. In frustration I deleted that drive. Well, now I can't get it back. What do I do? BTW, I see the two externals in Device Manager and I think I see one in MiniTool Partition but the drive in question is marked as Unallocated.
Can you help me? All my important backups are on there.

I turned the computer on today and one of the external hard drives has changed from 'K' to 'L'. Two other external hard drives have not been affected. For some reason the 'K' drive has been allocated to the CD Drive (which was previously 'F').

So how can I get 'K' back to the external hard drive using the same path as before. It doesn't matter what the CD drive is called but getting it back to 'F' would be nice.

Thank you.

Hello,

I recently bought a Lacie 1TB external harddrive to store some of the data on my old PC (Win XP, SP2, I cant seem to udate to SP3 because windows update wont work).

The drive is working fine as I've used it on my laptop running Win Vista (64 bit). However, the drive is not being displayed in windows explorer. When I go to My Computer>Manage>Disk Management, I can see the drive there saying it's online, but there's no name attached to it and when I right-click, all the options are grey (otherwise I could of just changed the letter through there).

Using diskpart on command prompt, I still couldn't change the letter. I also found out that there is no volume assigned to this disk.

Can someone please help me?? I'd be forever greatful

Answer:USB external hard drive recognized but not assigned to a letter/not mounting (Win XP)

I didn't see where you formatted the hard drive. Before you can use any hard drive, external or internal, you have to format it at some point. For hard drives with Windows installed on them, they are usually formatted during Windows setup. For external storage drives, you can format it through Disk Management.

Hi,

My laptop is a Dell Latitude D830 running Windows Vista.

I've bought a Freecom USB 2.0 Hard Drive XS 1TB (Model Code SSYBBA) which came FAT32 preformatted. I wanted to reformat to use NTFS so I plugged it in to my USB port. Opening Windows Explorer, the drive was picked up as G:\ and I could view files on there and copy and remove files so I knew the disk was working OK.

I started reformatting by right-clicking on the drive letter and selecting "Format" from the menu and select NTFS and kept the default settings. After an hour I cancelled the formatting (clicked Cancel) and a message popped up asking me to confirm, so I did.

Since doing this, the drive is now no longer recognised and doesn't get a drive letter assigned. I've tried rebooting, reconnecting and checking in Disk Management and it just doesn't appear (although is powering up when the laptop starts). Also, Device Manager doesn't show it. Screen shot of Disk Management attached.

Can you tell me, how do I get the drive letter back to restart reformatting?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Alex.

Hi. Here's a screen shot.

Woke up and fired up computer this morning.

Went to access my External Hard-Drive.

I have several of these, and the one I needed has been assigned drive letter G:

Was showing up as 'I' and not letting me access.

Upon closer look it appears some 'CD' drive showing up out of nowhere assigned itself to 'G' now.

I put a disc into the 'D:' drive and that shows up when I do.

But I can't change this new 'CD' drive that's showing up as 'G' in explorer, because it doesn't show up in disc manager where we can reassign new drive letters.

Anybody know how to over-come this?

Install and setup; Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive, and install; Acronis True Image Home Program

NOTE: See system specs below for my current setup.

I need advice and recommendations, and any pitfalls to avoid, to ensure that I end up with a trouble-free install and operating system.

I want to install and add both of the above to my current setup, but am uncertain about the best way to go about achieving a successful result.I intend to add the HD to take some pressure off my ACER C: Drive [12GB free of 52.1GB], by moving some programs that I have on it, to the Ext HD.Once the Ext HD is installed, is it possible to just do a 'drag and drop' of programs, from the C: Drive, across to the new ?: Drive? Am I able to designate or give the new Ext HD a name? eg. H: Drive.I'm also presuming that the new Ext HD will need to be 'hardlined' and powered on, only while I want to use the programs etc on it, and when doing updates via IE7. Does that sound right?I want to install the Acronis True Image program to the Ext HD, as 'insurance' to clone the content of my Notebook, its systems, functions, settings etc. Does this seem right? Some of the programs that I intend to move to the Ext HD include these and similar others; Family Tree Maker, Photo Shop, Irfan View, Real Player, Open Office etc. Do these appear to 'qualify' for movement to the Ext HD?Are there any issues that I should be aware of, that could affect operations with the Brother MFC-465CN printer/scanner etc.... Read more

Answer:Setup Maxtor One Touch 4, 500GB External Hard Drive and Acronis True Image 11 Home.

Yes you can give the HD a new name. Vista will assign a drive letter, but you can change that later if you wish.

No, you will not be able to 'drag and drop' most installed programs to the new drive. You may have to re-install them. The registry entries will be pointing to their old location and the apps won't start.

By hardlined, I assume you mean plugged in and switched on? Yes, it needs to be 'hardlined' to access the drive.

Using Acronis is a good idea.

Another thing you may want to do before using the external drive is format it as NTFS, to avoid any installation problems if the drive is formatted in Fat32 etc.

Your printer should be fine.

Hey,
Thanks in advance for the help. A couple of days ago google started redirecting after clicking each link on a search results page, also spybot and malware bytes won't run. I tried re-installing spybot, but to no avail it didn't work. I keep getting the bluescreen of death (I apologize in advance for not writing down what the screen said, as soon as I get it again I'll post it) and my computer will crash randomly. My external hardrive is recognized in my computer, but in the maxtor manager program it isn't recognized. I ran Dr.Web scanner and removed a trojan entitled Backdoor.tdss.115 and ran Kaspersky prior to running Dr.Web scanner, and it was found there also. Here are the logs:

The last few days, one of my external hard drives has decided to 'unformat itself' so I can view any of the contents. I am fine with this...

... the part that I don't quite understand is that when I attach the drive to my PS3, it is perfectly fine, all of my folders & documents are present and usable.

Does any body have any idea as to what could be causing this?

Here are some specs on my laptop/USB drive:

Drive - Western Digital 320GB, formatted to fat32 in a USB 2.0 enclosure
It was fine up until yesterday morning
Still works fine on my PS3 and X-Box 360
Laptop - emachines D620 with 1GB RAM, running XP professional
Other USB drives work fine

Hope somebody can help me!

Many Thanks

Hi everyone,

I have a PC running Vista Ultimate x64 and I just installed a 1Tb external hard disk (an eSATA/USB 2.0 combo) Through USB.

The problem is that the OS doesn't assign any drive letter to the external disk.

I tried to reinstall but it doesn't work at all.

In Disk management, choosing to "initialize" the disk, I selected the MBR partitioning style...but it returns an "invalid function" error message.

How can I fix this problem?

The system reads that there is a disk but it doesnt' recognize it and it doesnt assign any drive letter.

Answer:Vista Ultimate x64 - External hard disk doesn't receive drive letter

Did you format it ? ?

Many drives ship unformatted...

TIP: If you want it to keep the same drive letter even when USB devices are added ( handy for all sorts of reasons ) once it's formatted select a drive letter that's not currently in use and assign it....next give it a Volume name.

This also works with thumb drives as well...

i am looking at the above external and want to use it ghost my notebook.

My toshiba is pentium 4, intel pentium 4, 40 gigs, 1.9 ghz.

The hard drive is one of the new models out and is 250 gigs and has the feature Lock Drive which is supposed to be a security feature if the drive is stolen.

I use symantec's Ghost to Image my drive and I can use a bootable disk for an external usb 2.0 in the event of a crash.

What I am wondering about is if anyone knows how the "lock drive " feature works.
I have been told that if it is like an encryption feature with a password that my bootable disk for the external drive will be of no use in a crash as I won't be able to get to the point of putting in a password.

Security of my external drive is important to me due to the nature of my profession and thus I am looking for a way to Image on the external but have it secure and yet be able to get to the ghost if the system crashes.

I hope that there are members that may be familiar with this model of Maxtor and will be able to comment.

I have looked at the 160 gig Western Didital external drive and was going to use cryptainer for security and that was when I was advised that I would not be able to access my ghost image in the event of a crash and so that is why i am asking if anyone knows what "Lock Drive" is?

Thankyou

I recently bought a Samsung hard drive from Newegg. I formatted it with NTFS and made 2 partitions. Everything was working great until I woke up this morning to find my computer was not turning on.

I went to run the recovery to find out that the hard drive was no longer partitioned or even formatted. Thankfully I had most of the data backed up and I haven't really installed much.

How does a hard drive go an unformat itself? Does that mean the hard drive may be no good? Is there anyway to recover the hard drive through the repair of Windows 7 or should I just start over and reformat/reinstall everything?

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM is the hard drive I purchased. Seems to have really good reviews.

Hi,Bit of background first, my old harddrive , which was split into  C and D ,approx. 500 gig each, went Kaput, had it replaced with an SSD(at my request because I heard they don't overheat and are faster) by an experienced computer technician, and no longer  having to deal with split drives suited me fine.I only  have half the storage space now, about 500Gg in comparison to 1,000 Gg,  but cost was a factor at the time, SSD's being so expensive.Very happy with the new SSD, speed etc. My operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit , SP1. My backups were all stored on a Goflex external harddrive, which  the technician accidentally  dropped on the floor, he then replaced this with an external drive with an on/off switch. (Pleased about the on/off switch, the other didn't have one, very upset about the dropping my other one). All working fine, doing my backups to my new external drive  he gave me, using  my Acronis True Image software 2015 version, that I had always used.My old external  drive was set up to drive E, and all my previous backups in Acronis show drive E, so perhaps this is why the technician set this new one up to Drive F, not sure. And maybe this is why I got the error message below? Well, in my infinite wisdom (which with computer technology isn't great I must admit) I suddenly decided I wanted to backup to an external drive with the letter E,(E for External seemed so much mor... Hi, I got the Medion Drive & go, 500gb external hard drive, its installed PERFECTLY on my Windows XP laptop, installed the drive, appears as Drive F on the "my computer" and has already taken a large file of photo's to the drive and stored them and plays them back fine. HOWEVER when I try and install it in my VISTA laptop it says its installed the driver BUT it doesnt show in the "my computer" in start. I seem to remember having this trouble before with this particular Asus Vista laptop with my Buffalo 500gb external drive (though it installed on another Acer Vista laptop no problem!!!) so my question is: how do I "see" where this drive is appearing and how do I "assign" it a drive letter?? thanks PCDIMWIT

Answer:+++ Assign a drive letter for Medion 500gb external drive ++

Firstly, I seem to remember that this Drive is USB Powered.
It is quite likely that the USB Ports of your Laptop do not deliver sufficient power to run the Drive. You may need something like this
On the point of assignation of a Drive letter. The PC/Laptop will assign it a suitable Letter every time it is plugged in.There is no reason that this should be the same every time. It will depend on the number of USB Devices you have plugged in already.

I have a wierd problem that most of the suggestions seem not to work.
I have a HP computer with Vista basic installed at factory with no disc sent with computer. I then added an external drive on which I installed Ubuntu OS as the primary boot drive. This was needed while I was learning and using Asterisk. Now I do not need the drive which no longer seems to have a letter designation or Ubuntu OS but cannot seem to be able to use System Recovery. Near as I can tell, I need to reset the Master Boot Record back to Vista only but seem unable to do so as I recieved no disks with the Computer.
Any suggestions. I am not extremely skilled at computer technical stuff so please assume I am an idiot if responding.

Sorry its been so long since I posted, I had . . . personal issues and never got around to coming back (nor reseating my processor but will some time this week.) Anyhow, I just installed a SATA dvd lite scribe burner, which freed up a IDE slot. Well, naturally, I went ahead and put in my old hard drive, so I can get some files off of it. I ensured that the jumper was set to slave, so I wouldnt have it wrestling with the SATA hard drive for boot priority.

Then I booted up and found that the IDE cd burner wasnt in "my computer" and the old hard drive claimed it wasnt formatted. I shrugged, knowing a cable was loose and powered down. After double checking each and every cable that I unplugged to install the drives, and the others just to be safe, I powered it up. Now the cd burner showed up but the hard drive still wanted to be formatted. I went into BIOS and poked around but nothing is amiss, it recognizes everything correctly.

I'm not sure what I should do here. I'm pretty computer savvy but this has me puzzled. Of course I won't format the hard drive, I am almost positive that it still holds my, non mandatory, but still needed data. Should I disable my SATA drive and try booting from the IDE? The computer's configuration is totally different (Win key is the same) so it might not boot up. Or did it get damaged, despite my precautions of putting it in a static free bag and setting it in the drawer with my other old hard drives?

Seems like when I go to disk management and assign K it should stay that way.

Try assigning a drive letter a "distance" away from your existing drive letters.

For example, change the dock drive letter to Z and see how you get on with that.

I have a LaCie Porsche Design P9223 Slim External 500GB USB3Hard Drive that my father was using on his computer (with no problem). We're both running Windows 7. My computer, a Dell Studio XPS9000, won't recognize it in "My Computer". There's no drive letter!

It shows up in Device Manager ( says, "this device is working properly")
Show up in USB Safely Remove
Shows up in Devices and Printers
Shows up in Disk Management as Unknown/Unitialized, Disk 10. (When I right click and try to initialize it, it says "Device is not ready".)
The Driver is up to date
It works when I attach it to my husband's laptop, running Windows XP.

What can I do to assign it a drive letter???

My old laptop died due to a power supply failure. It was so old, and new laptops are so cheap, I decided to just replace it.

I put my old hard drive in a USB enclosure and hooked it up to the new laptop. Unfortunately Windows 7 keeps saying I need to format the drive before using it.

I did manage to trick Windows 7 once, by plugging in only one of the two USB connections, and I was able to browse through and see all the data, so I know it's intact. But when I tried to change ownership of the old files, Computer Manager froze (which I've noticed it has a very annoying tendency to do). Task Manager wouldn't even come up. I had to shut down the computer. When I turned it back on, the same old problem came back.

How do I get Windows to stop asking me to format every 5 seconds and let me see the files?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Windows 7 thinks my old hard drive is unformatted

I bought a used laptop some time ago. While the hard drive has a 40 Gig capacity according to the original paperwork, I can only access 10.6 Gigs on the C drive. IBM help says it may be damaged, Geek Squad says the hard drive was probably partitioned with only 10.6 formatted. How can I find out what happened to the remaining 29.4 Gigs of space? If formatting is the issue, how do I format the remaining portion of the hard drive?

Thank you!

Answer:Missing 30 Gigs on hard drive- unformatted or damaged?

Hello crepscular5,

Right-click my computer, select Manage. Under "Storage" in the left column click "Disk Management." What does it say about the hard drive?

I arrived here via One Click Answers seeking info about getting my ECS PT800CE-A MoBo to recognize a new, unformatted WD SATA II 2500WS hard drive (250 GB). Got directed to a thread about same problem with ASUS boards. Being my first visit, don't really know how to get back there after registering. UH...never mind-reopened a tab & found it. Was back in January 2005 with members PRELUDiCON, HoopaJoop, Gunny etc. Maybe some one has figured it all out better by now? Thanks to any help!
