Windows Explorer keeps closing itself when i go to my external drive

Question: Windows Explorer keeps closing itself when i go to my external drive

Every time I navigate to my external HD, I get a DEP message followed by a program error message, then it just closes. I already tried turning off DEP, but I still get the error message and the same thing happens. I have tried the drive on another computer and it works fine. I've also done a virus scan and I had no viruses.

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer keeps closing itself when i go to my external drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The main problem is actually when I click on the icon for a video that I downloaded (that is NOT a wmv file), I get a message that says 'windows explorer has experienced a problem and must close'. Its very strange, and it has been happening ever since I got the computer..I figured it was something 'laced' into the avi file that I didnt have incorporated into my windows media player yet, maybe a codec thing??

Also, in what may be a related problem....I just bought an external a few weeks ago. After I keep it on for a while ( it varies from a half hour to 2 hours or so) the computer will randomly stop recognizing that there are files on the external. It recognizes the external itself, but when I go into a folder, it shows nothing. I then have to shut the external off and turn in back on in a minute or so. Then the actual files saved on the external magically appear.

I have a T43 Thinkpad, Windows XP w/ Service Pack 2

I have a x64 windows 7 and an iomega eGo external hard drive. The external hasn't been used in a while, it's just been sitting in my desk drawer. I'm trying to see if I have any files on it, but every time I plug it in, and try to open it, the green loading bar in Windows Explorer moves to the end but never finishes and the program (Windows Explorer) stops responding.

I don't think I have any really important files on there, I think I've moved them , so if I have to reformat it or anything it should be okay. But is there anything else I can do?

Answer:External Hard Drive Windows Explorer Not Responding

Try this.

Download v 0.8.1 of the drivecleanup.zip from Drive Tools for Windows.

Unzip it to a folder, say drivecleanup.

You will have two folders Win32 and x64 each containing DriveCleanup.exe for 32 bit and 64 bit respectively.

Remove all USB storage devices/printers/card readers etc., from your system (except your Keyboard and mouse) and reboot.

Right click on the DriveCleanup.exe and run as administrator. (Use the *.exe file appropriate for your bit version of Windows.).

After the clean up act, reboot , plug in your Iomega external drive and check. ( After the drive cleanup every USB device plugged it will be installed afresh.)

I find that my external hard drive (Western Digital Desktop drive) is inaccessible. When I try to access it through Windows Explorer, It does not show the device at all. The HDD is detected by the device manager in disk drives.

The HDD is not detected in other 2 computers too. tried in a mac and windows laptops.

I ran CHKDSK. At the beginning, it gave me the following message: "Warning! F parameter not specified. Running CHKDSK in read-only mode." It claimed to fix some things at the end of step 2, but it didn't help.

Device Manager thinks that the device is running properly.

I rebooted the machine but that didn't help either.

I ran chkdsk/f as suggested for one of the similar problems in another thread, but for that lucky guy, the drive was visible in windows exploreer.

Any ideas?

Pls pls help me a it has all my important data in it.

Put on your thinking caps for this one, it's a two parter. Note that if I restart my system all is well for a while and the system functions as it should with these same components. Also I have had this same system for a year and I have multiple external hard drives and flash drives that are affected, which do work on other computers and this one after a restart. The external drives are not part of the problem as they work fine on other systems.

After my computer has been on for a while, and I plug in an external hard drive or flash drive,to any of the front OR rear USB ports it does not show up in windows explorer, or My computer. I can still access the hard drive and/or flash drive and transfer files to and from it, if I open it in disc management. It has a drive letter there.refreshing, unplugging and changing the drive letter does not work.

Now sometimes if the computer has been on for a longer while any fresh contact with the USB port by a hard drive or flash drive will cause the computer to shut down completely.

None of these problems occur on a fresh reboot.

I am using Windows XP SP3.

My external hard drive isn't showing up in windows explorer. It does show up in the disk manager and it says healthy.

I have tried changing the drive letter and that didn't work. I have also tried plugging it into a different usb port.

It has never done this before. What is going on?

Using Windows Vista on one computer and Windows XP on another - same problem with both.
Therefore I believe it is a problem with my Seagate Free Agent Desk 1,00GB external hard drive. Other external hard drives work ok.

THE PROBLEM: Reading and recovering data [digital pictures] from the hard drive. No problem with saving to the drive. Explorer will recognize some files but then locks up and does not respond.
I try to copy the files to another hard drive but only get a few or none at all before it quits responding. I then tried to copy to my computer hard drive but ran into the same problem.

I am having a strange problem with my external hard drive for my backups. When I plug the drive in, it does not show up in Windows Explorer. I can make it show up by going into disk management and assigning it a drive letter, but the next time I plug it in, I have the same problem again. Any ideas why this might be occurring?
Edit: Turns out this is not limited to my backup drive. Once I assign a letter, the drives work fine. They will even keep the letter if I eject them and re-insert the USB connection, but any external media I plug in fails to assign a drive letter automatically the first time it is plugged in. While I do not see this as a huge problem, it bothers me that Windows is not working as it used to nor as it should.

Edit2: After reading some of the related forums, I realize I should be clear about a couple things. I am having this problem with drives that have already had their drivers installed in Windows. I do not get a dialog saying that Windows is installing these devices because the devices have already been installed. For some reason, their volume letter has been forgotten by Windows and I have to re-assign it. I am being careful not to use the same letter more than once. I am plugging the drives in while Windows is already running.
Any help would be greatly appreciated so that Windows will automatically assign a drive letter to a device instead of me having to manually do it when Windows forgets what letter it had assigned.

Answer:External hard drive not showing up in Windows Explorer

Windows 7 x64 Quit Assigning Drive Letters Automatically helped me solve my problem. Ran an Elevated Command Prompt and typed the following commands.mountvol.exe /n
mountvol.exe /eGuess it just needed to be reset by disabling auto mounting and re-enabling it.

So, my external worked fine the other day, but now it just won't work. I connect it, try to open it in My Computer, and the window freezes. The rest of the computer is fine. It doesn't show up in the My Computer folder either. I have to disconnect it to unfreeze it. It unfreezes immediately when I do, and says "You must format this hard drive to use it. How'm I supposed to format it if it's not in? Plus, I have important stuff in it, so I really don't want to.

What can I do, what's the issue?

Hey everyone, I am new here, and I am having some trouble fixing my external hard drive.First of all I am using: Windows Vista Home Basic, Acer Aspire 3680-2354 Laptop/Notebook, 1 GB Ram.Whenever I plug in my External Hard drive into my laptop, I get two error messages:"Windows Explorer has stopped working""Windows Explorer is restarting"Then my desktop blinks with its icons on it, and then re appears. This has a continous cycle. Every 20 seconds or so it restarts. Heres the catch:I reformatted my hard drive, removed everything on there cause I backed up my files onto other computers and deleted everything on there. I re put the files back onto the hard drive, and it still does this windows explorer thing.Another thing is whenever I do not hook up my external hard drive to the laptop, my laptop is fine, free of anything. *This problem only happends when I hook up my external hard drive into my laptop. I have been trying for days to fix this problem, but still no luck. Please help, it will be much appreciated!!!!

So I have an interesting (maybe not) problem. I tried searching for a fix on here, but the issues seem to be different. I have a Western Digital Mybook external hard drive, that I use to hold my music and video files. It is formatted, working properly, and shows up in disk management. However whenever I turn on my computer it refuses to show up in Windows Explorer. I can unplug the USB connection and replug it in and it will show up, however if I close windows explorer and re-open it the hard drive will no longer come up under "computer". I can access the folder through an icon I created on the start page, and I can play the files in iTunes, it just refuses to show up in Windows Explorer. This is driving me crazy, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Answer:External Hard Drive Refuses to Stay in Windows Explorer

Have you tried plugging the drive into a non-partisan, third party PC if available?

And did work before correctly in a previous Windows OS?

Is the little indicator light blinking?

Is the drive and/or files somehow hidden?

There are a LOT of different reasons as to why an external hard drive isn't working properly, more details are a must.

Hello,

I've been having a problem with my Lacie 1TB external HDD for some time now. I'll just precise that it's a USB 2.0 disk and has an on/off switch. I apologize if the post is long but I'm gonna put in everything I can think of.

The disk worked fine for a few months then at one point it started hard clicking and soon after I was unable to transfer any data in or out of the disk without causing the transfer to hang after about 20s. I sent it back to Lacie for repair and, long story short, after they "lost" my disk, they sent me a brand new one, but apparently the repair centre wasn't informed so I received my old disk too, repaired. So I now have 2 similar HDDs.

My problem is

- at first, when I tried to run the format tool preloaded on the disk, to format the disk before use, it hanged and the progress bar didn't move. The only way to close the window was to shut down the disk. That happened on both disks, and they were then listed as RAW in disk manager.

- I tried to format or delete the volume using window's built in tool, but when I select my format options and click ok, it just gets back to the disk manager with the hourglass mouse pointer, as if it's doing something although there is no progress bar or anything. It just stays there for hours although it should be super fast as the disk is empty. I tried different softwares like partition magic but they just hang on "detecting devices" as soon as I turn the disk on. Same thing for disk manager... Read more

Answer:Windows Explorer Problems When Accessing External Hard Drive

Is this a hard drive that you bought pre-configured, or is it a hard drive that you've bought a drive caddy for? If it's pre-configured, then I'd suspect an issue with the hardware of the external drive. If it's your caddy, then I'd suggest checking the jumper settings on the hard drive to ensure that they're correctly set.

On occasions, my external hard drive will not appear in Windows Explorer when I switch it on. Switching it off then on again doesn't work. Unplugging and reconnecting the USB lead sometimes works but more often doesn't. The only sure way I've found on getting it to appear in Window Explorer is to leave it switched on and to re-start my PC.
Does anyone know how to jolt it into appearing in Windows Explorer without having to re-start my PC.

Hello i'm kinda a newbie to anything to do with external hard drives and/or Corruption.
But my external hard drive recently has become unusable, When it's plugged it only shows "Local Disk ( G: )" on My computer, with no drive size/space left. (Image to explain, Yes i know My primary drive is full, but i have no external to backup on. Here)

Any interaction with it will cause windows explorer to crash, and forcing to restart windows explorer, looking around the web i see no real fix i feel like trying, as there's around 600GB of data on there i wish to keep.
So i thought it'd be best to get a hopeful fix specific to my problem just to make sure i don't mess-up and lose the data.

The Harddrive itself is a "Hitachi 1tb External Hard Drive", For what model i have no idea, but looks exactly like this image: Here
It's a Dual power-source external hard drive connected by USB 2.0.

the only real problem i had with the drive prior to this problem was i had a little notification when it was connected asking me to scan for errors, i was kinda worried about the possible corruption so i went ahead and left it to scan the 2 billion odd bytes from what i remember , took ages to do but the problem was still there, I saw no issue with any of the files on there after pressing the "continue without scanning" so i just thought it might have been a bug, as the drive seemed normal.

But then after a while this problem occurred and since hasn't been fixed,... Read more

I am unable to see my external drive with windows explorer. I am using windows 8.1. I checked the internet for a solution. All i could find was to disable firewire 1394. I checked my device manager and don't see firewire 1394.

I have been running this PC for a couple of weeks now with no problems reading the external drive until yesterday.

I am confused. Any ideas (aside from going back to win 7)?

Answer:unable to see external drive with windows explorer on windows 8.1

Do you have the drivers installed for that firewire card? Did it work with Windows 8, before installing 8.1 preview? I have found over using 8.1 for a month that it was just cropping up issues left and right, and a lot dealt with Network shares.

I had no choice but to blow away the install, and reinstall the "Out of the Box" Toshiba Windows 8 again.

What is the manufacturer and model # of this computer you are having issues with, along with the external drive?

Hello. I have looked this problem up on the internet, yet none of the answers have been of much help to me. So now I turn to the experts. Recently my external hard drive (500gb, 400gb free space, Seagate Expansion Portable Drive) has come up with what seems to be a common error: "Windows Explorer has stopped working." I go into my hard drive and five seconds later the error message pops up, then it goes 'windows explorer is restarting.' All my icons disappear for a moment then reappear and my external hard drive has shut down. It never used to do this before - it's just started doing it a few hours ago. My computer is a Windows 7, and the antivirus I use is bullguard (if it's of any use.)I scanned my device for malware or errors but it says there's nothing wrong. Keep in mind this is only on my external hard drive. It never happens anywhere else on my computer.Your help is greatly appreciated!~Seki

Answer:'Windows Explorer has Stopped Working' < External Hard Drive Error

Does this external HD have its own power supply? I believe it does. Some uses report the segregate drives can fail after a few months. That should be rare, but I have seen that in more than one credible place. If the drive is inside of warranty , take it back now! But if the problem is the power and interface, you can test the HD by putting it into a desktop PC as the slave drive, or secondary drive.A new enclosure is about $30 here in the USA.

1TB external hard drive is spinning when turned on, however my laptop is not registering the HD properly- previously it would come up with the hard drive name (G: VERBATIM) however now it just says G: Local Disk and comes up with the error message "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it".

It emits a tone when the HD is removed so obviously it is acknowledging the device, and it does still work, but it just isn't opening at all. Whenever I go into Windows Explorer and attempt to access the drive (or even just right click on the drive) Explorer freezes and I have to reboot.

I am running Vista Home Premium SP2, however the same problem is occurring on an XP laptop. Ideally I don't want to lose what's on the HD, there's about 400GB worth. Much of this is .avi's though, which going by other threads could be a factor?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Answer:Windows Explorer crashes when external hard drive is attached/accessed

Hi,

Normally in this situation I would recommend that you went into the Device Manager console and tried to uninstall then re-install the driver for the hard drive; but since you experience this on another machine as well it seems as though there are one of two possible causes - either the filesystem may have become corrupt to some extent, or the PCB in the external enclosure has developed some sort of fault. I would say try and take out the hard drive if possible (and if you don't mind potentially voiding any warranty that may remain), and install it either in an available desktop or another external enclosure and see whether or not you can access your data. If you cannot I would say the cause is the former unfortunately.

Hope this helps.

Hey, I am having problems with my other computer suddenly closing both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer applications, such as Control Panel, My Computer, etc...(Windows XP Home Edition)
When i click on either one, lets say the my computer icon, a pop up of the my computer folder thing flashes for a split second then disappears, the computer freezes for about a second, shows only the desktop, then a few seconds later the icons start appearing on my desktop and my start taskbar comes back. The screen is back to normal with no lag, but the my computer pop up is no longer there. The same thing happens with internet explorer, but it just happens alot quicker.
Does anyone know what could possibly be the problem of this, and maybe how to fix it? Thank You in advance.

Hello -
Last Tuesday, I got a "Windows Security" virus and I thought I removed it by using the steps from bleepingcomputer.com. The real issue began on Monday, when I received a "Generic Host Win32" error. I am not sure if the two are related. After this, my computer starting behaving very strangely. I sometimes have trouble opening new internet explorer windows and when I finally do get one open, it can sometimes refuse to close. Yesterday, I received a blue screen error and the message that "your computer has recovered from a serious error".

The only changes I made to my computer after eliminating the virus was downloading the 2011 update for AVG Free Antivirus program. Since, I have tried to restore my computer to an earlier time and I have run scans with "Malware Bytes" a number of times. The first time, the program found about 137 issues that I promptly cleaned off my system. Since, I have run the program a few times, but no issues were returned. Is there something I need to do to Malware Bytes to detect whatever is messing with my computer? I thought restoring and running the scans fixed the error, but later that day I received another Win32 error. The strange thing is, my computer seems to behaving normally today. I am wondering if anyone can offer some advice as to what to do next here.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Mike

Hi everyone,

A few days ago I encountered an odd problem... Whenever I tried to right-click on an .avi file in My Videos in Windows Explorer, I would get one of the 3 following problems:

1. All the open Windows Explorer windows would just close, the taskbar would disappear, and then after a few seconds the taskbar would re-appear. Although I'm not very tech-savvy, I think this is what happens when you terminate explorer.exe and it sort of... automatically restarts itself?

2. I'd get an error message saying "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." and, similar to above, all the Windows Explorer windows close, the taskbar disappears and then re-appears as if nothing happened.

3. At the time I didn't think of taking a screenshot of this one, but after right-clicking on an .avi file and trying to open it in VLC player (my default is Windows Media Player, so I right-clicked -> Open With -> VLC Media Player), the Windows Explorer window froze, VLC froze while loading the file, the taskbar froze... but I was able to access other windows such as Windows Media Player and MS Word through alt+tab. After 3-5 minutes, a message appeared about Data Execution Prevention, and that explorer.exe had been shut down in order to prevent data loss.

Some additional information:
- I have done virus and malware scans, using Norton 360, Malware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware - my computer is clean

Can someone help please. We have a problem with one user profile on this PC which belongs to a friend. If hidden files are marked as being shown and he opens 'My Music' and selects a music track either the explorer window closes completely or freezes. If however we mark the hidden files option as 'not to show' the problem does not occur and the music file will play fine. Other user profiles on this PC do not show the same characteristics. I don't know if this is in the correct forum, I suspect not, but I have also attached a HJT and Start log for someone to look at to see if we need to do anything there.

Hello everyone, sorry to just beg for help on my first post, but I keep getting a pop-up saying that Windows Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close. It then reopens, but then I get the same message again (although it hasn't done it for a minute or too!).
I ran HijackThis, but I'm useless with anything technical, so I'm hoping some very kind person can work out what on earth I've done to my computer :)

Hi ecmcd, welcome to TSF..

I've had a look at your log and you have some serious issues which need dealing with...however, this section of the forum is not the correct place to seek help.

Please read through this thread as it details the '5 Step Process' which we would like you to take so that we can be in a better position to assist you. Follow the instructions as best you can. If you have any problems with any of the steps, note down some details on the problem and go to the next step. On completion, you should have some log files which we would like you to attach to a new thread and post here, be sure to add as much information as possible regarding the problems you're having and any issues you may encounter when following the '5 Step Process'

Hi all.I recently did a clean install of xp sp2 and everything was fine until last week when windows explorer started to close with the "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. I close it and then it restarts. This seems to happen when I close any windows that I use when looking in folders or other drives. I have done the SFC/scannow and virus and spyware scans all come up with nothing.Any ideas?Cheers

Hi.

My problem is that when I leave my computer on and go away for a while that it goes to the welcome screen (not the problem). After I log back on windows explorer usually closes down. So the taskbar and all my icons are gone. It also happens during games sometimes.

Can someone help?

Also, My firefox keeps clearing my bookmarks and personal settings. Is there a way to fix that?

Thanks,
Kaku

Answer:Windows Explorer Keeps Closing

For your Firefox problem, try the following.
Start> Mozilla Firefox> Mozilla Firefox(Safe Mode). This starts Firefox without
any extensions and the default theme. If this solves the problem, then it is an
extension or theme effecting Firefox. If that doesn't help, create a new profile.
Your profile may have become corrupt.

My PC keeps closing down Windows Explorer. With your help I have just got rid of a Trojan Horse Backdoor Ircbot. Does the fact that this warning DEP shows each time I start up mean something or all of Windows Explorer is infected? I have done full scans with Malwarebytes', in Safe Mode, which are now clean. How concerned should I be about this DEP warning and what to do to resolve this please?(Is it OK to surf using Moz Firefox before it is sorted, we are looking for a house!?) Thanks.

Hi
I have recently had a lot of pc problems with processes using 100% cpu and runtime errors. I took my pc to my local repair shop and it ended up that they completely wiped my pc and reinstalled windows xp home.
I use the mozy online backup service so thankfully most of my files are safe and I have restored them.

Everytime I try to go into "my pictures" where I store all my photographs, I get the error message "To help protect your computer, windows have closed this program. Name: Windows explorer"

Is there anything I can do to prevent this happening?

Thanks

Running win98, 511 memory, 2000 mhz, ati vid card

Windows explorer, on my computer, close with warning while *opening folders. Seems like the number of folder that are "restricted" is increased every time windows explorer is opened. RAMfreer showing ram being used by computer steadily increases even though no extra programs are running. Spybot S & D does not finish, with non-normal error messages occuring when it is almost finished.

After running in safe mode, spybot found nothing, AVG found nothing. CCleaner cleaned some stuff, also defragged computer to check if that was the problem.

After restarting in normal mode am running panda, redownloading spybot and downloading Asquared AV virus scanner to check if it's another trojan. I can't afford to buy registry checker full version, although there were some problems on my computer in the registry. Is there a free registry checker available? Ram is still steadily decreasing, anyone would think it was hard disk space. I haven't tested to see if the windows explorer problem occurs again, i'm going to wait till panda finishes first. Then i'll switch off computer to completely remove old spybot, reinstall new one, install new Asquared Antiviral program, and run them both to see if it is spyware that is the problem. Ram down to 70/500 megabytes with only soundcard, vid card, ramfreer, AVG, bigpond (internet connection) Panda and this box running, visibly, anyway.

I have a problem with Windows Explorer. Every time I try to use Start/Search, as soon as i have tyed in one or two letters, a window pops us saying that explorer must close. I have an option to search for a solution online, which I do, and then explorer closes and restarts. The same thing happens when I try and access Administrative Tools from the Control Panel.

I have scoured the Microsoft website for help, but found nothing. Other than this the laptop is clean - no viruses, etc.
I have tried to install Service Pack 1 but it fails to install, repeatedly. NOt sure if the problems are connected.

Can anyone help, please? The laptop is a Gateway, and has not had another problems at all.

Answer:Windows Explorer Closing and Restarting

Hi -

The appcrash you listed had a 0xc0000005 exception - a memory access violation. The problem here is more than likely old and new drivers clashing - then you crash.

Your Windows Explorer executable file has a timestamp of 4907deda = Tue Oct 28 23:56:10 2008 and the MS kernel driver t/s is 4549bd80 = Thu Nov 02 05:42:24 2006.

The problem here is that your system is not updated with Vista SP1.

The installation of SP1 must be the top priority. Have you ever tried to install it? Has it shown in Windows Updates?

Has anyone encountered a situation where an MPEG file will abruptly close a Windows Explorer window. The file will do this both over my network or while trying to access it from a CD on one of my computers. The PC that has the file on it has no problem with keeping it up on a Windows Explorer Window, or running it with a media program. Both computers are running the same version of Windows XP Professional. As soon as the folder is accessed over the network, Windows Explorer closes on the computer. The same situation occurs when the MPEG file is accessed by CD. The file has been scanned for viruses with multiple checkers, and seems fine. The MPEG file also plays fine in a portable DVD player. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

Answer:Windows Explorer abruptly closing

Welcome to TSG....

The MPEG file if it has a corruption in it it might play ok in a player but it might crash in a Windows environment. Have you tried this file on another computer that is either on the network and also off the network?

Can you open the MPEG file with an editor program to check to see if it is a good file? Try copying it from the CD-R or DVD to the hard drive to a special directory you have set up. If it does not copy then the file is no good.

Answer:Explorer Windows Auto Closing

It's a bit tedious as a troubleshooting method, but often the only effective way to sort such things out.

Try "clean booting":

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

I have scanned & saved hundreds of family photos and am trying to reorder them so I don't have duplicates etc. etc.

When doing this, I get the "Windows Explorer has enountered a problem & has to close". I click "ok" and it closes and then comes back with the normal home screen (all icons present & correct). If I try to do the same file reordering, it does it again, so I can't finish what I started.

I understand that the most likely cause is a shell extension somewhere causing this to happen.

I have the shellxview programme which comes up with over 100 shell extensions. It was also suggested to disable some of them & see if that solves the problem.

1) Can I disable ALL of them & enable them one by one, or will that just stop my computer working?
2) Which ones are more likely to cause this problem?
3) I also get Explorer closing when I go into a folder with avi's in it. Is this related, do you think?

Any help & idiots guide will help greatly, thanks!

It's bizarre, but when I open my home page (SBCGlobal) or any other site on Internet Explorer, within seconds it goes to "http:///" in the address bar and says it can't find the page. I can only get back to each page by clicking the Back shortcut on my browser a half dozen times. ARG. What's going on??
I ran AdAware and Spyware Nuker and this window, at the moment, is staying up. What's up with IE? What should I download to take its place? My connection is working fine.

iIn Explorer, is there a keystroke sequence to close all the open windows at once?

Answer:explorer - closing multiple windows

Ctrl+W will close the current window the same as clicking on the X on the top right. If you are getting multiple popup windows and you get them from a site you go to often, you need a program such as PopUp Killer which you can find and download for free from:
http://www.cnet.com

It has a blacklist you can download with know popups and you can add to the list the ones that you get.

When i've been playing games, doing research, anything the windows close- all of them. Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Please try to do as much of the below as you can. The more you do, the greater the likelyhood that we will be able to determine your problem.
Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
Bitdefender - from step 6

If I interpret this correctly, I think there is a problem with the AUDIODEV.DLL but I have no idea how to fix this. Please tell me if I'm on the right track and how I might proceed. Thanks

Answer:Windows Explorer repeatedly closing and restarting

audiodev.dll is an unwanted file that is known to cause problems. Though it's a microsoft stuff, I still suggest you to scan for malware.

Perform a full system scan using: Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download and some other good anti virus software as well.

If this doesn't solve the problem, follow this guide: Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

The error message saysInternet explorer has stopped workingA problem has caused internet explorer to close and so on.I just got this computer yesterday. There wasn't a problem with internet explorer until I installed firefox, then I unstalled it. I'm sure firefox isn't the problem. I installed other software as well. What should I do?p.s. I scanned the computer using ad aware, and a-squared and avast antivirus!

Answer:Internet Explorer Keeps Closing In Windows Vista!

Internet Explorer will stop working almost all the time cause a conflict with a Plugin or Active X...Go to "MSconfig".Click on Start > Type in "Start Search" MSconfig" (no quotes) and hit Enter...Go to the Startup tab and look for "OmniPage" and uncheck it...Go to internet options...Start > Control panel > Left side of window click on classic view > Internet options. In "General" tab, and look for browsing history and click on "delete..." Delete all...Go to "Programs" tab and click on "Manage Add-ons". Add-ons are active-x controls that change the way Internet Explorer is used. These can be toolbars, plug-ins, and other code that can interfere with the operation of IE. Select any suspicious add-on names from the name list and select disable to prevent the add-on code from opening when IE is opened. Finally go click the "Advanced" tab. Remove the checkmark from "Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)", editAlso unchek "Enable memory protection to help mitigate online attacks".Restart and the error should not come back. These errors are probably caused by browser extensions that were added through spyware or adware.Maybe a look in here, and posting your log will help if this didn't.Hope it helps Mav

Every time I got to an explorer window that contains video files it says "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" yada yada yada.

I can get it to go away by changing the view from "Filmstrip" or "Thumbnails" to "Details", but every time I try to open a video file it comes up with an error message so I'm assuming there is a problem with Video codecs or the Preview feature or something. DivX Player works although the error message still is on-screen. Media Player Classic won't work.

When Windows Explorer craps out the error message is this:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156 ModName: unknown
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

The following files will be included in this error report:

When Media Player Classic craps out the message is:

ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000000

The following will be included in this error report:

Just in the last week or so, when I click on a linked page off of a page, it will open the link for 5 seconds, then POOF! it closes and I am back to the original page.

This is happening on almost every site I go to. I'm thinking it might be a setting under Internet Options | Tools, but can't figure it out.

I've done massive searching for something similar, but can't find anything.

Any ideas? I don't have Macromedia Flash installed, and possibly some of those "other little programs" that like to load themselves....could it be something like that?

I can provide links if needed, but I don't have this log file everyone seems to be using.

I'm running XP PRO SP2....and I run AdAware SE, AVG and Microsoft AntiSpyware.....

Thanks from a new poster!

Evening, everybody. Got a small head-scratcher here.

I dual-boot. Well; I can't really say 'dual-boot'; what would be the expression for nine OS's on the same machine? Seven would be, what...septa-boot? Eight...octa-boot? Nine....well; never mind.

I run Windows XP Professional, and eight 'Puppies'. I've had the copy of XP Pro for several years, and I've lost track of the number of times I've re-installed it, when everything starts slowing down. Can't be bothered with doing all the investigation and repair guff; I know the symptoms by now, so it's quicker for me to re-install.....especially since I did a 'slipstreamed' SP3 disc quite some time ago. I re-install 2-3 times a year; the last occasion was back in March.

FYI, I also run the 'Deskman' Powertoy; multiple desktops, for those of you who might not be aware of what it does. I've got so used to virtual desktops in Linux, it got so I was lost without them every time I booted into XP.....

This time round, everything has been behaving itself (!), when, around a fortnight ago, I started getting a hiccup with Windows Explorer. Every time I go into it, it's all good. I do what I need to do; upon exiting, however, the system is now freezing up for a short time (perhaps 60 seconds or so), followed by this message:-

Windows XP explorer is more buggy then later versions of Windows OS explorer it does crash more often run Sfc /scannow command to repair any damage Windows system files. Also damage media file can cause this issue when Windows try to render the thumbnail for the damage media file Windows Explorer may froze or close disable viewing thumbnails to see problem will get resolves if it does then you will need to find out which media file is damage.
Open Control Panel. (Classic View)
Click on the System icon.
Click on the advanced system settings link.
Under Performance, click on the Settings button.
In the Visual Effects tab, uncheck "Show thumbnails instead of icons."
When the thumbnail view is enabled in Windows Explorer, it will generate thumbnails for your video files. If something goes wrong during this process, then Explorer may crash. Causes of failures can be corrupt media files or buggy codec. Remove third party codec packs. Automatically diagnose and fix Internet Explorer or Windows applications when it freezes or stops responding caused by codecs when playing video files. Download Microsoft Fix it utility.
Buggy program extension can also make Windows Explorer crash or froze uninstall programs you installed before this issue started.

For the past few weeks I have been having issues with my computer. For example, I get DEP popups saying for your computers protections Data Execution prevention has closed the following program - Windows Explorer. It will sometimes say Internet Explorer (which i never use, I love using Firefox or chrome. I got Prevx a few months back it seemed to work well fixed a few issues way back when, but now it seems to not find stuff, I see when it scans at the bottom it still shows virtumonde which I thought I got removed with Seek and Destroy a week or so ago. I've ran Prevx, Seek and Destroy, MalwareBytes Anti-malware and even housecall.trendmicro.com, currently they don't find anything save for a single "doubleclick" thing in the malware search. I'm at a loss. Can anyone help? or am I being silly thinking DEP shouldn't be popping up If I'm not on anything?
Thanks for any help or insight!!!! ~~Savvy

Hey people again, this time the problem lies with my PC at home! Whenever I'm using Windows Explorer and just going through my Hard Drive, after a few mins i get the "windows explorer has encountered a problem" message and it closes the explorer window, the whole screen goes blue for a second and then the desktop comes back and the systray looks as if it's loading the icons again in the bottom right! I installed ZoneAlarm a couple of weeks ago and I don't know whether that's causing a problem/conflict but I've had to uninstall MSN because it just keeps logging out and logging in!

HELP!!

Answer:Windows Explorer Closing Error - Constantly

Set a restore point and back up any important data (you do this already right ). The we can try using the system file checker (ie sfc command). This will require your Windows CD and afterwards you will need to reinstall all your microsoft updates.

To do this simply go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

As I said, make sure you back up and set a restore point.

Let me know how you go.

Hi,
I have a problem on my computer. I cannot use windows explorer (browsing files and folders) for more than few seconds or minutes. I get an error message and it closes.
Same thing happens in windows player and MV2 player.

The problem DOES NOT happen on internet explorer.

I am running windows xp Professional SP2

Thanks!

Answer:HELP! Windows explorer, media palyer, etc closing

Hi there have you tried uninstalling MV2 player? this might be having a codec clash with media player i had a similar problem once where if you have alot of movies eg.avi/divx types and you more than one player on your system sometimes they both are previewing that specific folder because when you put thumnail view on its the codec that kicks in to display it even if you have it on detail or tile view try going in to the program preferences and uncheck the box that says this is my default player there will be something like that there.
Failing this if a lot of damage has been done then get a copy of XP Repair its good for fixing file directories and a copy of sherlock 2 its a codec detection prog its tiny and tells you what need or dont need.

Good Luck !

Hi all, i'm having a major annoyance with explorer.
It keeps opening and closing some dirs in my pc. It would not be some kind of shitty thing if it doesn't gave my pc a sudden and brief STOP everytime it occurs.
I have downloaded the FileMon program and I could see the programs that accessed my HD and what they did.
I could see that after closing every single program in my PC explorer was the only really important thing running it ketp accessing my Hard Disk for some "QUERY INFORMATION" in those dirs, this happens from 5 to 5 seconds.
This shit makes my CS:Source and all other games to give little hickups.
Iknow that this is the faulty thing since every time this happens the HD led turns up and the screen gives the small hickup.

I don't have the fastest HD as the OS HD but i know I have a pretty fast one, and the one in my work with a machine that is way slower than mine works normally.

The work machine doesn have the same stupid explorer random access but it doesn't give any hickup. Nor does my cousin's with a radeon 8500 (not that it should matter).

Does anyone know how to get rid of that shit?

Answer:Windows Explorer constantly opening and closing dirs!

Use the programs in my signature to scan for viruses and spyware. Make sure to update the definitions and software before scanning. Use ALL of them.

Should at least solve some of the problems.

EDIT : Do you have the indexing service turned on? Try disabling indexing.

I have autoplay completely disabled.
I realize that Windows Explorer (WE) will open if a new dvd, usb drive, etc is connected/inserted.

But 'I open' all of the WE windows I use but "Win7 64 will close that WE window if the thing is removed, even when it did NOT create/open it" !!

Anyone know how to disable this 'automatic' CLOSING of WE by Win 7??

Thanks for any help!! , this is a pain (and infinitely stupid on Win7's part) !!

Open the Event Viewer utility in your Administrative Tools control panel and look through your System and Application logs for entries flagged with "Error" or "Warning", especially those which mention the "Explorer.exe" program, or whose time-stamps coincide with the occurrences of the problem.Double-clicking on such an entry will open a properties window with more detailed information on the error; post the details from a representative sample of some of the different error messages (please don't post duplicates of a given entry, or flood us with the entire contents of the logs). To post the details:In the Properties window of a given entry, click on the button with the graphic of two pieces of paper on it; the button is at the right of the window just below the up arrow/down arrowbuttons. You won't see anything happen when you click the button, but it will copy all of the details to the Windows clipboard. You can then paste the details into your next post here.

Greetings everyone,

There is a quite strange problem with my World of Warcraft that didn't occured before a certain windows reinstallation. The problem is that my WoW keeps closing randomly without any error message and its folder does the same. I tried out lots of things which worked temporarily, but somehow this problem persists further and further. I checked my computer with several antiviruses and antispywares with no succes: they found nothing. When this problem began WoW closed as if i had shut it down in Task Manager. The game didn't save the changes i made while i was playing. I first shut all windows services and it seemed to be working. after a week the problem appeared again. I said to myself that it must be a process killer so i renamed the Wow.exe file to asd.exe and the problem seemed to have been solved; i didn't have any problem with WoW for two weeks, but the problem occured again with a new thing. Not only does WoW close itself but every single folder named "World of Warcraft" and i noticed that if there are other words beside "World of Warcraft" let's suppose "World of Warcraft Trial" the folder won't close. And it happens to Windows Explorer (not IE) only. If i open the "World of Warcraft" folder with Total Commander, TCMD won't close. And now WoW saves the changes when it closes as if i used alt+f4 to close it. I don't think it is a hardware related issue. My memory cards are okay, i checked them with memtest and... Read more

Answer:World of Warcraft and its folder in Windows Explorer keeps closing

I also noticed that when WoW closes itself a process named "wscript.exe" appears. after WoW is closed, it vanishes. not always does it appear, but at most of the cases it does

no matter what I configure in Autoplay ...
- whenever I say "safely remove mass storage" (in my case it's a SD Card) the explorer window is closed
- it only stays open when I select another drive before "safe removal"
- it also stays open when I just pull the SD Card (unsafe remove)

the drive itself is a combined mass storage reader built into the Desktop PC and ist drive letters are always shown in the explorer

Is there a regkey to tell Windows to just let it open ?

Answer:inhibt windows explorer from closing when SD card removed

In its infinite wisdom Windows assumes the user is finished using File Explorer [renamed from Windows Explorer in Win7] and to save resources closes that window. It really doesn't bother me as I usually have two or more instances of File Explorer running anyway [for access to External USB HDDs].

Hi all,

I'm desperately looking for some help with regards to a Windows Explorer problem. As in the title, Windows Explorer closes down all the time when opening pictures, music or anything in My Docs. I have restored to factory settings from the partition on the HDD and fully updated. The recovery failed twice and updates failed twice and seemed to take hours too, but finally I got there. Then came the moment of truth, opened My Pictures and bang! closed again! The first time it failed recovery it gave an error message about certain programs/applications couldn't be placed into memory as there is a I/O failure or error, I should of written it down in hindsight. It was all a painfully slow procedure that took all day yesterday and some of this morning too. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the HHD is starting to fail or maybe RAM issues.....although it is seeing the RAM that is installed, 6Gb.

I would really appreciate some help here, thanks for reading.

Martin.

Answer:Windows Explorer closing down whenever I open any files in My Document

Hi all,

I thought I would follow up with my findings and solution to my Windows Explorer nightmare as I am quite pleased with myself for persevering and fixing it. It was right under my nose all along but it was just knowing how to go about it.

Basically, "Event Viewer" gave me all the information I needed. In the event tree I clicked on "Windows" then "Applications" which gave a list of apps with either a blue info icon to the left of the information, an exclamation mark in red for error or a yellow exclamation mark for warning. There were plenty of red error icons which I hoped would be logs of Windows Explorer closing down, and sure enough they were. On following the "Failing Application Path" c:\program files\ASUSWSShellExt64.dll I found the highlighted shell extension, Which is basically Asus Web Storage. I promptly uninstalled the program and have had no crashes whatsoever, yee haaaaa!

Hope this helps someone else someday as it almost blew my brains out

Martin.

The window in question is the Windows Explorer one. Everytime I click close, I get a message telling me that Windows Explorer stopped working or something. Anyway, it restarts on its own. Hi all.

Basically, the problem is in the title. After using Windows Photo Gallery to look at photos, when I close it, it hangs (Not Responding) and if I try to interact with the window I get a system message that Windows Explorer has stopped working. I can leave that message unanswered and continue using Windows for a while, but the system will eventually lock, without any BSODs, restarts or anything. If I instead choose to close Windows Explorer, it removes the taskbar and I am left with the desktop but without tools to start programs or restart/shut down. And if I ignore the prompt to close explorer or wait for it to respond and try to shut down, it will show me the "logging off" screen forever, without actually shutting down and only hard power off/restart can help, with Vista prompting me for a normal start or safe mode at next power up.

I tried avoiding using PG and using Live Photo Gallery instead. I was editing some photos in Gimp and when saving a file, Gimp hung with the same overall effect. So I am not sure if the problem is in PG or somewhere else.

I ran sfc scannow (or whatever that scan command is) and it didn't find anything. I'm not sure if the problems started right after a particular software install, but I did update Kaspersky Internet Security to 2011 version the day before PG crashed for the first time (that I can remember).

Answer:Windows explorer hangs when closing Photo Gallery

Update:
Same now happened in the Windows Live Gallery: I was previewing photos and rotating some of them, so first it refused to rotate a couple suggesting they were opened by another program (they weren't) and then as I moved to another image, it showed "Saving..." and just hung there. Closing didn't help (and no messages that it was not responding). I used Task Manager to kill the process - the Live Gallery disappeared from the desktop but remained in the Task Manager processes. I was able to open another instance of Live Gallery and do some operations before it hung again. After killing it with Task Manager again, I had two processes in the Task Manager and none on the desktop. I closed all programs and tried logging off but it didn't log me off, the mouse was moving though. After restart, it turns out some programs didn't actually close (Firefox offered to recover a crashed session).

No error messages in Event viewer

I'll run checkdisk later as it is taking ages, but would appreciate suggestions. Thanks
Vit

I have several protective programs running..
like "Adware, Fix It 5,SpywareStopper"
but I haven't found any viruses...

When I run SpyBot, it comes up with about 23-25 entries AND I stall when I get to create a restore point. After a lon---g period of time the (not responding)
goes on.

Another problem is that WinRAR opens but closes unexpectedly...

Are these problems possibly related or do I have different issues???

Thanks for any help!

http://forums.techguy.org/t110854.html Follow this link to Rollin Rog Security Tools It is hard to tell from your report exactly what spy ware programs you are running . Scroll down the page to Parasitic , Download Ad-Aware SE , Spy Bot Search and Destroy , Spy Ware Blaster . Setup and update according to the tutourials. Go to Panda Active Scan or other online virus scanner and run a scan . If you do not have an anti virus program aboard go to Grisoft AVG and download the personal free edition . Use these programs only for now and shut down any other spyware / malware programs you mayhave running . After using the programs from Rollin Rog Security Tools come back and let us know how things are now running .

My problem is as such:
When ever I close an explorer window, the taskbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds...Its quite annoying, and it also closes any other Windows I have open.
Programs don't seem to be affected...

Has anyone come across this problem? And are there any solutions?
Much thanks for any help rendered.

Hi to all, I'm sure a lot of people are annoyed with the same bug...it apprently happens on all Windows 7 editions. When you open explorer, and activate the preview pane using the button on the uper right, you can define the size like any pane by clicking and draging the vertical border line. But when you close explorer and open it again, the size is not kept, and the preview pane is very big, you have to click and drag everytime to resize it. It doesn't happen if you double-click on computer, it only happens when you click on explorer icon which opens the libraries location, the default location (i'm not completly sure but i've only seen that in this way). It seems that Explorer doesn't read correctly the REG_BINARY of "ReadingPaneSizer " (or maybe the values "PageSpaceControlSizer " or "PreviewPaneSizer ") in the key "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Modules\GlobalSettings\Sizer " when it opens, but it writes it apparently correctly when you manual resize the pane, and the value isn't change before manual action, even when explorer opens and display preview pane in a different size. And the last thing, when you open explorer, activate preview pane, resize preview pane, deactivate it, close explorer, open explorer again, activate preview pane, the size is the good one, preserved from previous explorer window... So question is, does someone know a way to fix this *really* annonying bug? I can't activate the pr... Read more

I have 3 external USB drives and 1 USB DVD drive as well as 3 HDD ATA drives. Mucho disk space. Recently bought a 80 gb pata drive and installed it in an external enclosure connected by USB. In my explorer-files (EF) app, I see all my drives but my new one. I formatted the drive and set up it's partition. I used the Device Mgr and see the drive as Disk 3 and assigned the letter K but it's still not showing in my EF. I also run Power Desk Pro 7 and it doesn't see drive K either.

The only funny thing about this install is the enclosure connects to the USB port via a USB A-male to A-male cable. Most devices connect to USB via a USB D-male to A-male cable. Had to buy that cable to test the drive!

Thanks, olrob (aged 76 and still pc alert)

Answer:Cant see external drive in Explorer

I connected the external drive described above to my laptop running Windows 7 and it was seen by both my Explorer-Files and my PDP 7 apps. So the drive is ok and the cable is ok. It has to be the XP os handling of the device.
