Erratic Cursor

Question: Erratic Cursor

I have recently started having problems with my cursor slowly drifting around the screen or jumping just as I'm ready to click a button. This behavior starts out very slowly but over the course of a day or two gets much worse. This is a desktop system not a laptop so thumbs on the touch pad isn't the problem. I am using a Logitech wireless MouseMan optical that I have been using for years without incident.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix it? Thanks for any help.

Preferred Solution: Erratic Cursor

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What security, antivirus, spyware, malware programs, firwall etc do you have? It sounds like you got infected (probably by visiting an infected webpage sometime)
do you also get any popup messages - say from a fake security program or similar warnings, stuff like that?

Question: Erratic cursor

I have read several threads with this problem, cursor or pointer moving around screen erratically and difficult to manoevre accurately, and have tried the suggested remedies to my ability: but my problem is slightly different in that it happens on my laptop, but only when using it on a flat surface, never when it is on my lap.
I use the touch pad, not a USB mouse.
Any suggestions, or have I got a laptop that takes it's title too seriously !

Has the Touch pad ever been Scrached or pressed Heavily? This can Damdge the Sensor Causing the Curso to Jump on the Screen,

Do you have a USB Mouse you could use that may be lying around? If so try that if it works fine then it would be your Touch Pad being your Issue

Question: Erratic cursor

I have a Dell laptop running on Windows XP. A week ago I started to notice erratic cursor behavior using the touch pad. It started to worsen so I began using a Logitech mouse, which seemed to help. This made me think that it could be dirt/grim under the touch pad. Today I was typing in Word and in emails and my cursor started to go wild, jumping all over the place, and now I can barely type anything. Also, using the Logitech mouse is nearly as bad as the touch pad. Any ideas if this is a virus and how it can be fixed? --Thanks.

Question: Erratic Cursor

Got an older model DV 4150 HP Laptop with 2 gb of ram and runnning Windows 7 Ultimate. I seem to be having a "wild" cursor problem. I can be typing along and pause and lots of times the cursor will have moved to somewhere else in the sentence or page that I am typing on. Just like now, before this sentence, the cursor moved to about four different places in the first three sentences when I would pause. This is irritating at best. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

PoppyJ

Answer:Erratic Cursor

Are you sure your hand is not touching the touchpad while you are typing? This happens a lot to me if I'm not careful to keep my hands off the touchpad as best I can while typing. If your palm brushes across it, the touchpad mistakes that as input and starts to move the cursor to wherever it thinks you are pointing it to. Your touchpad may have a "Palm Check" setting to help minimize this from happening.

Does this solve your problem, PoppyJ?

Question: Cursor erratic

- portable dell mini inspiron -xp

please help is it touchpad or m ouse , materiel or software?

Answer:Cursor erratic

I had a similar problem on my Insipron 1520.

The touchpad becomes erratic and will start clicking by itself. Reinstalling the drivers did not help. You can try this (Device Manager > Mice > Right click and uninstall ... then reboot) and see if it helps. However like I said, it didn't for me.

I confirmed this to be a hardware issue because the same problem would happen when I boot Ubuntu. A temporary fix would be to hibernate the computer for 10 minutes then resume.

Solution: Replace the touchpad. I was able to find one for mine for $20. The documentation on Dell's website explains how to remove and reassemble.

Try searching for your model. Seems to me their Symantic touchpads go bad after about 2 or 3 years, depending on how much use.

All of a sudden, the cursor is acting erratically, jumping all over the screen, shaking the screen, enlarging the screen. No external mouse installed, not accidentially touching the touch pad, just sitting here watching the erratic behavior. Getting worse by the hour. Have read that it could be driver updates conflicting, could be electro magntic issue.  Any ideas? Laptop can't be used now.

Question: Cursor Erratic !

I don't know if this is a Vista Home Premium problem or Windows Mail, but since it seems to involve many Programs, I classified it here.

Every time I type anything, the cursor jumps around like it has a mind of its own, splitting words in the middle w/ new typing, dropping letters, dropping Capital letters, etc.

I didn't think I was that terrible at typing !

My wife purchased a laptop that came with Win 10 preinstalled. The problem is that the cursor jumps all over the page. This happens when typing in any software whether it's Word, Outlook, or Photoshop and on occasions will shut down the software. I have turned down the sensitivity of the touch pad just in case her fingers accidentally hits the touch pad and she has been careful not to touch the pad but still the cursor jumps around.

On my wife's Sony laptop, while she types into Outlook the cursor sometimes suddenly jumps to another location in the email. I'm assuming its a software issue. Any suggestions?

Answer:Erratic cursor movement

It could also be a light issue. What type of mouse is your wife using? If it is an Optical mouse (red light at bottom), then check to see if there is a table lamp near the mouse.Sometimes the light fall on the mouse in just a certain angle, and it triggers the mouse tracking. Then you get the cursor jumping around effect. If you do not use a mouse with the laptop, then some of your keys might get stuck.(Probably Tab and/or Shift.)Press those keys a couple of times (separately and simultaneously) and see if the jumping stops. If this doesn't help, it may very well be a software issue. In that case, I suggest that a computer technician take a look.

it's impossible to use the touchoad since cursor disappear after short time, sometimes "stuck" in right upper corner, flashing like it's gone crazy or out of sync and then you cant open new apps since its closing automatically - weird weird behavior of the cursor touchpad!!!!!. Does not recall such issues on win 8,1 (before upgrade to 10). I tried tons of changing config touchpad settings - nothing really helps. It seems there is some big issue here that needs to be resolved by HP. I really tried all settings / old drivers and all that stuff...nothing helps.

The cursed cursor has a mind of it's own at times and at any time will jump back several words and if I am not looking at the screen, I get a garbled letter which sometimes I am unable to undo. This problem is not confined to Word Pad but occurs on all the typing progs. The kit is a Gateway Solo 2000 laptop with Win 98. This message is from a very well loved old faithful machine that knows how to behave! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Foto.

Answer:Problem with erratic cursor

Presumably the PC has a 'touchpad' for driving the mouse pointer around the screen, and am I right in thinking you use a standard mouse?Sometimes the two just don't like living together, so disable the touchpad or the mouse whichever you prefer. The problem could also be that as you type on the keyboard, your thumbs or wrists are perilously close to the surface of the touchpad, and is moving the pointer around. These touchpads sometimes don't need to be touched at all. I think it is possible to reduce the sensitivity of it.

Cursor clicks the x and file buttons, moves my tool bar. All kinds of stuff. It also freezes and I have to restart my computer. It does it when I am in the middle of using my touch pad and when I use a USB mouse. I have tried turning the touch pad off and using just a usb mouse. I can not play any games. It just jumps everywhere. It also clicks my start button. I am using a laptop. I have tried virus scan, malware scan, spyware scan....everything scan.... I tried rolling back the drivers. Can you help?

Answer:Crazy erratic cursor

Try Trend Micro Housecall they will scan your computer on line with multiple scanners.
Have you used any speed up type programs as they can cause the mouse to stutter and flicker.
set a restore point then go to device manager and expand the properties box of mice and other pointing devices and uninstall the driver.
Exit and restart your computer
Windows will look for the driver.
Update it after and restart.
If that fails you will have your restore point to return to.

Hello!

Ok....Windows 7 Ultimate....mouse cursor goes where it wants to when started normally.

I have tried everything from several different mice (meeces!) including one with an old trackball and ones that are either wired or wireless.

Sometimes if I just leave it alone for a bit it will come back to normal for a brief period of time but then will start malfunctioning again.

It almost seems like it is actually a physical problem as sometimes I can tip my old d620 and the cursor will slide back down into the screen. Also, SOMETIMES when I touch the bottom right of the screen the cursor works properly for a few seconds....same with the area directly under where your left hand would rest.....but these are VERY temporary fixes to what is a long term and frustrating issue.

No virus comes up during a check so................please help

I'm hoping somebody can help me out on this one. I have a model 36984SU Helix with the keyboard attached. Whenever the device is plugged into another monitor and then the laptop is closed, the cursor has a tendancy to start behaving erratically (jumping around on the screen in what I would describe as jolts). I have not seen this behaviour when the laptop is left open. I have, however, seen this behaviour both with the laptop connected to dual monitors via a docking station, or connected to a single monitor via the mini display to VGA. There is a bluetooth mouse installed, however it is turned off and rarely used. When the laptop is closed a USB mouse is used. Regardless of whether the USB mouse is plugged into a docking station or directly into the Helix, there are still issues. I've run through all the driver updates that I can think of, including Synaptics drivers both directly from the Synaptcis website and from the Lenovo website. I've also installed the mouse software here http://support.lenovo.com/en/documents/pd005570. I also tried thoroughly cleaning both the screen and the trackpad to no avail. It's especially frustrating given how intermittant the issue is, and how I don't have a method to reproduce the issue which I can use to verify that a fix was effective. I completely disabled the trackpad and the issue stopped occurring, but that wasn't a good enough solution as the trackpad needs to be used at times. One of the driver updates se... Read more

Within the last 7-10 days I have been experiencing cursor movement without touching the mouse. It seems that it's becoming more and more extreme--traveling all over the screen at will.

My computer is a DELL Inspiron 8600 notebook running XP Pro. The mouse is a Logitech Optical mouse with cord (2 button mouse with scroll wheel). I have used the mouse for over one year and never before encountered the problems I am seeing with it now. One solution that I was told about was to go to "Run" and type "Control Mouse" and click "Pointer Options" and uncheck "Enhance Pointer precision" under "Motion." However, this action had no bearing on the problem whatever.

This comes at the most inconvenient time with an intense workload for the coming two weeks which requires much use of the computer. (I am sure many of you can identify with this kind of dilemma). Even now the cursor (without touching the mouse) is going nuts!

Any assistance that could be provided would be most gratefully appreciated.

Using Windows XP on Dell computer, 512 mb RAM.  With no programs running I can occaisionally hear what I think is the hard drive "bogging down" (clicking noises also).  In Task Manager, there appears a sharp spike in performance, and up to 100% of CPU is used briefly.  The spike is so sharp it's hard to tell what process might be doing this as I can't get the processes tab on the TM open fast enough.  Even if I figured out a likely process, what would the next step be?  When it happens, and sometimes at other times, the cursor jumps to another part of the screen.  It may jump several times in one occurence.  Anyone have an idea what's going on?  This happened with old Intellimouse, andwith new Microsoft optical mouse as well.  Both appeared to be in clean condition.

Greetings, For the last 6 months, I've noticed that my cursor would not react to my directions, and wanted to pull up to the top right hand corner of the screen. Simultaneously the screen would flicker a bit, and when I would try to move the cursor to shutdown the computer, the desktop icons would also flicker when the cursor would roll over them.  This would occur randomly after my laptop would be on for about an hour or within the first 20 minutes of being turned on. The only way to get it to stop would be to hold the power button down until the laptop shut itself off.  I would turn it back on and all would be okay.  And this erratic behavior would only happen about a third of the time that I use it.  From 6 months ago, it seems to be happening more frequently.  I know that if I could conduct a system restore  procedure to an earlier time, it might solve the issue? Problem there is my restore only goes back to three months ago.   The other problem is I purchased this computer with a Windows 7 OS.  I then switched to a Windows 10 OS when it became available to the public.  I unfortunately never backed up my laptop after I switched to Windows 10.   As well, I deleted a few programs from my start up list hoping that it would help with a faster start up. My mistake was not noting what programs they were. So, my gues... Read more

I've been plagued with erratic cursor movements while typing. The cursor jumps to a new place and typing continues there, or it will jump someplace totally outside the area. I had been using a Logitech laser mouse, then tried a brand new Logitech wireless model, and then a new Microsoft standard model - same problem with each one. It's driving me mad! In addition, the cursor will start jumping around on its own, sometimes resulting in a portion of the screen fonts being highlighted. It occurs in all apps. I'm using Win7 Pro. I hope you can help me. Thanks!

Hi again Guys,
My Wife’s Laptop, a Toshiba NB205, has developed an annoying problem. She is running Windows XP (Home Edition) SP3.
The problem is on Start Up or Re-boot. The PC no longer immediately starts automatically but the ‘TOSHIBA Leading Innovation’ legend appears, along with the notation:

Press (F2) for SETUP, Press (F12) for boot device selection menu.

I have found that by then pressing ‘ENTER’ it continues to boot normally. Further, if I wait about 10 minutes it will boot automatically anyway.
However, when the ‘log-on’ page appears, the cursor is rapidly flashing or blinking and the keypad does not function.
I have further found that, by pressing ‘ESC’ the cursor stops its erratic behaviour and I can then continue, although the problem re-appears quite often whilst the PC is being used.
I have run ‘SpyBot’ and performed a ‘Boot Time Scan’ with no negative results. I have also re-booted using ‘Last known good configuration’ and also gone into ‘F9’ and selected ‘Load Set Up defaults.’
Any ideas what can be causing this anomaly, please?

the cursor jumps to different locations on the page while I am typing. It sometimes highlights whole sections which are deleted as soon as I type the next letter. I have to constantly watch what I am typing. It has been doing this since I bought it. Getting worse recently.

Answer:jumping cursor erratic behavior in Vista

If this is a laptop, make sure your hands aren't near the touchpad while typing. This is common for some people.

I recently purchased an HP envy laptop (model m6 n-012dx) and the cursor on my screen will intermitently become erratic, very jumpy. It will start moving all over the screen, or jitter back and forth, and even minimize pages or open pages and links beyond my control. This happens even with my fingers off of the touchpad, so I know it is not a sensitivity issue. When I do attempt to take control of the crazy cursor it is pretty much inresponsive to my attempts.  Basically the cursor becomes possessed. This happens intermittently though (and when it occurs it lasts at least a couple minutes at a time), so I haven't been able to pin-point what triggers this behavior. My touchpad driver is up to date and all of my other drivers are up to date, so I know it's not an issue there. Oh, and I'm using Windows 8.1. A temporary solution I have noticed is that by doing a hard reset it fixes the problem until the next occurrence. But I don't want to have to keep going to this solution, considering this happens pretty much daily at some point or another. Any ideas/suggestions out there? Am I alone in this issue? It is very annoying. Cursing at the cursor. I would be very appreciative of any advice.  Also, a side note: I am living in Guatemala for most of the rest of this year (this is where I am right now) and so returning the laptop to Bestbuy isn't really an option. That would have been my big solution. Thank you in advance! &nbs... Read more

I am having major problems with the mouse.

The cursor's movement is erratic when using the mouse and it is almost impossible to get it to move where it needs to go. It appears as if the mouse and cursor are fighting eash other. The cursor mainly wants to go on to the left ahnd side of the screen which makes it difficult to do almost anything .

I am running XP and have tried a number of different mice - including P/S 2 and USB. I have reformatted the hard drive - rather drastic I know but wasn't sure it was an XP problem. I have run virus scans with Kaspersky 7.0 - and found nothing.

This is making the computer almost unusable so I would welocme any suggestion

My cursor jumps all over the p;age. It is not my heavy typing hand. Things I have tried to no avail as follows:

I have tried 'touchFreeze' that disables the the touch pad no help,

I tried- run - control mouse - options - clear enhanced pointer precision - no help.

toshiba suggested reinstalling word starter- any suggestion?s

Answer:erratic cursor pointer word starter

does the problem occur only in Word or in general on your computer?

Do you have a mouse connected to your laptop and if yes, is it turned on? It might be caused directly by your mouse (i.e. defected laser - quirky surface).

If not mouse is present, can you normally use the touchpad at all times otherwise? Does your laptop (along with the touchpad) become too hot? You can disable the touchpad on any laptop without the need for third-party software. Just go to your Mouse settings from your Windows Control Panel.

Hi first post

I have recently taken delivery of Sat L450, as part of home access for our 11year daughter.

My problem is that while typing either on or off line the cursor is erratic.
It can jump into any other line and if you don't watch it constantly, it will screw up what you have typed.

I just completed a search for drivers and noticed there are two types of topuchpad drivers, so unsure if this would solve the problem or which one. (while typing this post the cursor has jumped back to previous lines 5 times)

Answer:Satellite L450D: erratic cursor while typing

Hi

Please disable the touchpad while typing using the FN + F9 key combination.
I had the same issue some years ago and didn?t notice that I touched the touchpad surface accidentally while typing!

I disabled touchpad and it was the solution?

My cursor seems to freeze when the notebook is on for a while (heat?) and then suddenly works again after days and days of being frozen. Have reinstalled drivers (worked for 24 hours), sent to Toshiba last week who reinstalled everything and it worked again for only 24 hours, has been stuck for days and now suddenly worked after the whole screen froze and it would not respond to the keyboard either so I had to turn off at on/off button but I have done this before and it didnt work before - NO RHYME OR REASON. This is a very new machine. WHAT CAN I DO? It's driving me mental.

Answer:Equium M40 - Usually Frozen Cursor - Touchpad very erratic

Hi richie

It?s not easy to say what exactly the problem is. Maybe your unit goes to hot?
It is also very important that notebook should be clear of any objects that can cover the air vents. There should be place around the unit so it cans "breath". Sometimes can help BIOS update. You can change also the processor performance and cooling method of the unit in the Toshiba power saver utility.
Maybe it helps.

Best regards

I currently have a dual boot setup with Windows 7 Pro 64 and XUbuntu 64 bit XFCE desktop. On random occasions, the mouse pointer will begin to float and or will not stay positioned on the spot selected.  This occurs with or without an external mouse attached.  The track pointer will not control the mouse and neither the left nor right keys just below the keyboard function.  The drifting will stop sometimes when the center key at the bottom of the keyboard is pressed. The touchpad and its keys seem to work correctly.  I have turned off both of these in the BIOS and have not had any problems.  It seems to me that the problem may be with the keyboard. Any body have any experience with this sort of problem?

Match the Hosts files with other computers on the network at the same location. Any interesting sites, should be removed from the Hosts file and saved. Your video links that you posted don't work. What other hardware or software differences are there in other machines on the network? Try and match them to one another. To find out what could be causing it.

Hi,
I am at my wits end. Everytime I use Microsoft Word, the cursor jumps around and acts very erratically. I thought this might be due to this being the first year for this new model of Word. However, with the last year model, 2015, it did the same thing. It's
not because of the computer because I used a different computer than the I have now and the same thing happens. Right now, I'm using a Dell and the last computer was an HP. Similar instances occur each time.

I start using the application and then, Bam, there goes the cursor, moving about like it has a mind of it's own. I addressed the situation with Dell and they told me to contact you guys because it seems like a software problem.
So, what can I do? I thought about reloading Windows 8.1 and then re-load the Word 2016 and see if that works. I also thought that maybe I need to clean something. Right now, I'm at my wits end.
What's up?

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro A300 running Vista Business and my Synaptic Touch pad cursor has started to become erratic and cannot be controlled normally.

It is difficult to move and it will open programs and internet etc . This happens every time mains power is connected but operates normally on battery power. I have run Malwarebytes and AVG 8 scans but they come up with no problems. I restarted in Safe Mode (after a forced close down) and the problem still existed.

Can anyone throw some advice on this problem?

Answer:Satellite Pro A300 - Cursor is erratic if power supply is connected

Strange. I never heard about such an issue and at the moment I can?t say what is the reason for this but I hope I can help you to identify the reason.

It would be interesting to know if you have the same issue with an external mouse. Can you check this please?
Are you using the original Toshiba AC/DC adaptor or another?

Maybe the problem can be solved if you update the BIOS. You can find it on the Toshiba website:

I just rebuilt a R40 for a friend using an XP Professional SP3 CD.Once I had XP installed and the security updates loaded I installed the Lenovo System Update and got the drivers installed through that method.  It installed the current version of the UltraNav driver V14.0.18.0, but something screwy is going on. Sometimes during boot up the cursor will start hopping horizontally to the right edge of the screen.Trying to "force" it back doesn't work well as it keeps trying to "hop" off the right side of the screen. Also the UltraNav icon does not always show up on the taskbar even though I have it turned on. It does this (but not all of the time) either with or without a USB mouse installed. Just now it was behaving properly and I was using the USB mouse to change settings within the UltraNav control panel. I changed one of the settings and the cursor went into "stupid" mode right away and hopped off the right side of the screen. I now have it set so that the touchpad IS enabled and the trackpoint is DISabled. If I check the box to enable the trackpont the cursor immediately starts to hop off the right side of the screen and can not be controlled. I have to use the keyboard to turn off the trackpoint function and regain cursor control. Have I got bad hardware here or .... driver issues....Again the cursor "hops" off the screen in about 1/2" increments and is not drifting "smoothly" off-screen.... Thanks for any help!Jim

Answer:cursor / mouse hops horizontally across screen to the right - erratic w/ trackpoint enabled

Hi Jim,I suggest downloading and booting from a Live CD of any linux distro, if the curser also hops in linux then it definitely would be hardware issue.I also recommend running lenovo PC Doctor's diagnostic test on the keyboard.Hope it helps.

Cursor is smooth and fast at startup (and in safe mode), sound works fine (startup noise) but when everything loads and Windows is actually usable, it's like the PC works great .. until you move the cursor.

Cursor is choppy and affects sounds. I can watch video and listen to music perfectly, until I move the cursor.

I made a video of this:

www.youtube.com/watch?&v=4JwfH3qgChI

Things I've tried: uninstalling / reinstalling / repairing / etc. mouse drivers, video card drivers, network adapter drivers (thought the problem was related to network activity because of startup/safe mode behaviour being normal), catalyst control centre, etc.

Mouse is a wired Logitech MX518, uses Setpoint software
All the specs I can think of, let me know if you think any other info would help

In task manager performance tab, cpu goes to 100% usage when the cursor is moved around.

New build, no viruses, scanned for good measure with Avast (then uninstalled Avast to see if it helped), Malwarebytes, Spybot, Microsoft Security etc. I don't see how infection could even be a problem at this point

Anyone recognise this problem or have any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Not sure if this is Windows related or not. This may have more to do with my VGA output, but anyway:

I am having an issue with my mouse cursor jumping around on the screen whenever I let it sit idle for even a second or two or if I start typing. This only seems to happen when I have my laptop plugged into my HDTV via VGA cable and duplicate/extend/whatever the display.

They only appear to happen when I use the cursor in the extended desktop (but never my main laptop LCD, plugged into VGA or not).

The fact that I am using a mouse or touch pad is irrelevant as both work perfectly fine when not connected through VGA, so I am convinced that this is not a hardware problem.

Can anyone offer any perspective/advice on this?

Thank you.

Hi, Everyone- when typing on a new Asus EEE 1015, with Win 7, the cursor will suddenly jump backwards to an earlier spot in the text. This happens a lot, and makes it difficult to type anything.

I googled and saw this problem for many systems and OSs, but it seems like mainly a laptop and netbook problem. some people have erduced sensitivity on touchpads, or have updated touchpad drivers, or have installed a program that disconnects the touchpad when the keys are being used.

We know we are not touching the touchpad accidentally. you can really perch your fingers way above, and the jump still happens. We have decreased the sensitivity on the touchpad, and the jumping still happens.

We also have an Asus EEE 1005 Win XP, for almost a year, with absolutely no cursor jumping.

Any info specific to this set-up? I would love to hear any insights, before I go into a long routine of upgraing BIOS, upgrading touchpad drives, etc.

Answer:Cursor jumping Asus Eee 1015, cursor moves when typing

As the PC is new I would return it under warranty as this is most likely a hardware issue.

The only quick fix that might work is to reinstall the touchpad drivers from the Asus site. You could also check in the touchpad settings to see what is set for making the cursor disappear during typing, change the setting from whatever it is at present and see if that helps.

Maybe this sounds weird, but I like the classic cursors and I want the cursor to stay the same whether it's showing a background or busy activity.

I tried to capture the cursor and edit it with AWicons, but when I set it, the entire cursor just dissapears when I launch an app for example. But when the white cursor is smaller than the normal, it's fine.

Answer:Apply classic arrow cursor to background and busy cursor?

You can just download standard classic cursor from XP and apply it to every cursor type by clicking on each type and selecting that file with Browse button.

Firstly, please excuse my lacking of computer knowledge, I'm merely a scatterbrained teen looking for some help. I'm not even sure this thread is in the right place.

I've looked around the web for the longest time for a solution to this problem, but have found nothing but advice on restarting the computer, which does nothing to help.

This flashing cursor is very annoying, and not only is it a visual irritant, but ever since it started to flash, my computer has been running slower than usual. I've checked task manager for any strange or unusual processes that might be trying to run and keep failing and restarting, but everything seems normal there.

Currently I'm running a virus scanner to see if any malware has tampered with anything, but so far no risks there besides the usual few tracking cookies.

For now, to keep me from pulling my hair out from the massive irritation this problem brings, I have went into the mouse settings and changed the 'working in background' cursor to the regular pointer to keep it from visually flashing.

I'd be very grateful if someone could be of some assistance; for if this is causing some hazardous problem with my computer, simply hiding the flashing cursor will do no good.

Hello,

Thanks for your help in advance.

I think this might be caused by Malware, but leave it up to you for suggestions.

In the last 5 days I've notice the cursor flashing up as the save/eggtimer icon every 2-10 seconds no matter what screen or programme I'm on. Even when logging in to windows it flashes up several times during that log in process. It's very fast - just a flash - then returns to the cursor icon. However, I use a fingerprint scanner. No matter what screen or programme I'm on it's doing this constantly. It never did it before this week - other than when I pressed ctrl S. It's done it several times since I've typed this./

Also, the cursor has a mind of it's own about once a day. What happens is though I try to drag it one direction, I can't move it or it goes the other way. I don't use a mouse but a touch pad. I'm careful not to touch the pad and know that it's just sort of doing it itself. Occasionally it even clicks on files during this process when I'm not clicking.

What do you suggest? I saw the things to do before posting Hijack This thread - should I go through that?
Thank you.

Answer:cursor/eggtimer flashing and cursor with mind of own..

Hi Sally!
Welcome to Major Geeks!

Is there anyone else within your physical range that might have a touchpad or mouse that could be accidentally connecting to your mouse mechanism via an infrared or radio signal? Does the same thing happen if you physically take your computer someplace else in your city? I suggest you borrow a mouse, if you don't have one that goes with your computer, and see if it gives you the same effects as the touchpad. If at all possible, use a corded mouse, not a cordless one. Also, go into Start / Settings and open Mouse, go to the hardware tab and run the trouble-shooting button. If your cursor is straying and clicking on things, it would be a good idea to check your computer for malware, but make sure first it's not an accidental connection occuring with someone else's computer, which does happen sometimes. If you would like our help with looking for malware, please follow the instructions and links in the box so we can look at your logs:

Cursor is smooth and fast at startup (and in safe mode), sound works fine (startup noise) but when everything loads and Windows is actually usable, it's like the PC works great .. until you move the cursor.

Cursor is choppy and affects sounds. I can watch video and listen to music perfectly, until I move the cursor. I made a video of this:

pc issue - fine unless cursor moves? - YouTube

Things I've tried: uninstalling / reinstalling / repairing / etc. mouse drivers, video card drivers, network adapter drivers (thought the problem was related to network activity because of startup/safe mode behaviour being normal), catalyst control centre, etc.

Gigabyte G31M-ESL2 (new)
Pentium D @ 3.40 GHz
3.25 GB ram (2x2 GB ddr3 tested with Memtest)
Radeon HD 6450 1GB
Atheros AR8131 Ethernet
XP Pro SP3
Mouse is a wired Logitech MX518, uses Setpoint software
All the specs I can think of, let me know if you think any other info would help

In task manager performance tab, cpu goes to 100% usage when the cursor is moved around.

New build, no viruses, scanned for good measure with Avast (then uninstalled Avast to see if it helped), Malwarebytes, Spybot, Microsoft Security etc. I don't see how infection could even be a problem at this point

Anyone recognise this problem or have any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Answer:(Video of problem) Choppy cursor, video+sound stutter when cursor is moved

Finally hunted down a ps/2 mouse instead of other usb mice (durr). There seems to be no problem now, not even in task manager.

Now my problem is I'm using a ps2 mouse.

Any ideas?

Question: Erratic fan

I've just purchased a nearly new ProBook 430 G3. Everything is working fine except the fan is behaving erratically. While idle the fan is off as expected, during intensive tasks the fan runs at full speed, again as expected. However while browsing the web, using Visual Studio etc the fan starts running but doesn't keep a constant speed. It constantly speeds up and slows down, its subtle  but noticeable. I've used lots of laptops over the years and never seen this behaviour before. All the latest drivers have been installed along with the most recent BIOS. Anyone know if all 430's do this or is mine faulty? Thanks

Question: Low, erratic FPS

Hi guys. Have posted here previously about hardware - i was building a new PC. I'm having some problems running WoW on it though. I have posted on the WoW support forums, but as is the standard process, they've asked me for my driver info and then ignored me. So I've come here!

Yesterday evening, I started having some strange stuttering slowdown. Every 2-5 seconds, I'll get a bit of slowdown for half a second, then I'm back running smooth again.

Previously, Warcraft would run at 60 FPS at (almost) all times, in busy cities, in raids, whatever. But after a few hours of playing yesterday, I suddenly started experiencing these low framerate spikes. It runs smooth for a few seconds, then it stutters, and then smooth, then a stutter.

I have tried:
Running with 0 addons (in-game custom UI stuff),
Fullscreen and windowed,
Lowest graphics settings,
Spyware scan (which brought up quite a lot actually - but it's clean now),
Virus scan,
Defrag (fairly new drive, so i'm at 0% fragmented, it says),
Allowing the launcher to fully patch (it now says up to date - there's a sort of streaming patch process),
Closing all processes and switching off fancy Win7 themes (my tray has my graphics utility, sound utility, mobo utility, and Microsoft's AV - nothing else).
Updating graphics drivers.

It's particularly noticeable if I try and run around somewhere quite complex, like the cities or forests. Then it's a pretty constant 10-20... Read more

Question: Erratic DVD

I am having problems with DVD/Video. I edit files into a full movie - approximately 5 mins long. I drop in an audio file to use as background music and everything proceeds as it should. I then get the message that everything has saved as it should. When I try to play it back it starts ok and then starts to "stutter" and drop out. The same thing happens when you burn a DVD and play it on an external DVD player?
Anyone out there know why ?????

Question: erratic mouse

Just after start up my mouse becomes erratic with a mind of its own. It clicks on things opening and highlighting everything it touches. It becomes totally unworkable and I have to close down and reboot. Often it is still the same when I start up again. I have been told by one department at microsoft that it is a microsoft problem but they want me to pay to sort it. Is there anything I can do myself. Would appreciate some help with this annoying problem. Thankyou

Answer:erratic mouse

I would only guess one of a few things could cause that. Try a restore point to a time when it worked maybe for the first try. See help and support for restore point. It should allow you to go back in time when the mouse did work. I guess you could get a new mouse too and try it.1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. Question: Erratic Mouse

I'm not sure what kind of issue this may be. I have tried replacing my mouse Marble Logitech with a new wireless Logitech one but the issue is still there.
While playing games on facebook the mouse pointer has shifted(you have to move the pointer around to slightly below or slightly to the side to click what you want-Some games I cannot even open because of this -Its also hard to close game windows since the "X" doesn't work where it should you have to move the mouse around and find the area that works to close it.I am using windowx XP and google Chrome as my browser.
Yesterday I posted on Major Geeks Facebook page and they told me this "Get SlimDrivers from our driver section and update your drivers. Odds are the USB drivers are out of date compared to the mice you are using." I did download it and it said the drivers was out of date I fixed it and rebooted and the issue remains .I posted on the wall 2x's but noone seems to be answering so I came here.
Hope you can guide me in the right direction

Answer:Erratic Mouse

HI

What Windows Service Pack is your XP at?
What is the exact model of your Logitech mouse? (generally the wireless mice form Logitech are called Wireless Mouse Mxxx where xxx is the model number)
Are you using a Desktop, Laptop, Netbook?

Have you uninstalled any software or driver that was installed for your old mouse? what I would do is uninstall all software and drivers linked to the mice and then reboot and install the latest mouse's drivers.

Reason I ask about laptop/netbook is maybe disable the touchpad.

What surface are you using the mouse on, try a different surface to what you are using now, different mouse mat, or a dull none shiny surface.

Question: erratic laptop

Hello, please could someone look at the attached logs for me and see if they can identify a problem. my laptop is behaving erratically. I have read and worked through the 'run and read me first' instructions and attached the requested logs. I have attached the 'ComboFix' log to a reply to this thread, I hope that is OK.
About 1 month ago I downloaded and installed 'Webroot security'. It clogged the laptop up totally with a CPU of 100% constantly. I have since removed it and reinstalled AVG free, but ever since then it has been running as if infected. I tried to install McAfee but it would not install as it said I still had Webroot on. I have removed it with 'Revo Uninstaller' and have even downloaded and run the official Webroot uninstaller, but it still shows as being on the laptop. could this be the problem?
Also, my DVD player is not running correctly, the sound is 'tinny' and the picture 'jumpy'. This is the same whether I actually put a disc in the drive or play a recorded film from an external hard drive.

Question: Scrollbar erratic

I am having a problem with my scrollbar jumping up and down, whether it's on the web or any program I have running. If there is a scroll bar in the window, it will jump up and down or jump all the way to the bottom the the screen and stay there. This will also happen even if I take my hand off the mouse and not touch it for a while. The mouse I am using is what came with the computer. It is not a wireless mouse. It seems that the scroll wheel will seldom work when the screen is jumping. I purchased Microsoft's Windows Live OneCare to try and take care of the problem. I thought it could be a virus or spyware causing this issue but the program has found nothing. I tried sevel freeware programs on the net to detect a virus or spyware also and they found nothing. I purchased adaware also since i heard good things about it, but it has found nothing. I am using a Dimension 2400 with celeron processor and the windows is XP. I tried looking on the web for threads relating to this topic but have found none. Can someone help!?

Answer:Erratic Mouse

When a wireless mouse starts getting erratic,it is usually a low battery problem. Best to use rechargables, if you haven't already done so.Erratic movements can also be caused by 'fluff' etc on the ball rollers. Unscrew bottom of mouse cover, remove ball and clean.

Question: erratic mouse

actually a trackball, Microsoft Explorer 1.0 that is. Running on Win2k, SP4, Dell Precision 360 PC, usb converted to PS2 connection.

I have gone thru the Spyware Trojan Removal process at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407 thru step 4. HAve not completed Step 5, did run Hijack This and saw nothing out of the ordinary. Ran Bitdefender, ADS Spy, adn maybe another from the list after Step 6. No issues. Windows Update has been run, but am wary of removing MS Java since a work product definitely uses JAVA and I don't want to break it.

Problem is: the mouse (trackball), at times, jerks around, even gets stuck in a spot, but then eventually recovers. Acts as if something is so taking up the CPU time that there's no extra for the mouse to use/move.

I had this problem a few months ago and was sure I had some nasty infection, so I used it as a motivator to rebuild the system from scratch (SW). Even wiped the boot sector (cause a rebuild w/out that step had the same problem show up). WOrked for a while, and now, it's baa-ack.

A regular mouse, Dell/Microsoft Intellimouse 1.3A works fine. THe previous iteration of this problem had the regular mouse also going to erratic behavior eventually.

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the mouse driver. Same w/video (nvidia) driver (since the mouse started acting funky after an upgrade to the video driver - I think but am not 100% positive).

SafeMode w/network produced same proble... Read more

Question: Erratic Behavior

Hi
ok i'm freaking out here

First I get the NTLDR is missing one most of my drives with 2 that say NTLDR is compressed and use boot disk
Before I attempt to reinstall Windows XP Home SP2

It gets to Windows prompt
I type Exit
It asks me about autochk.exe path
So I tell it the path in system32
It tells me it cannot find it but its there

I try another drive
I get Windows on
After a few minutes whatever internet windows i have on closes down and erratic behavior goes on with XP menu opening and LOG OFF menu
So I check task manager and I use like 3-4 different virus scanners and spyware scanners and nothing is found on any of them

Ive used memory boosters and trying to check my ram and used chkdsk

I have 5 drives I have NTLDR is missing with discs that are legal and mine

Reinstalled Windows after partitioning and formatting them as well
First of all I thought it was the windows updates or internet exploder updates
So the second reinstall i didnt update
The same thing happened

What else could it be and how can i clear this up?

Chkdsk thorough found some bad clusters on 2722 and fixed them
But that didnt eliminate my issue

Hello there, my first post here

Ok let's get on with it.

I have seen this subject on a couple of other threads on other websites, but i haven't figured out a way to salvation yet.

I just bought a new PC...

I get erratic mouse movement and sound is choppy most of the time. At the same time, i noticed that it does that when my drive light (orange) blinks. Looks like it's doing something but it's hard to say. Booting up takes a little too much time i think, installing software also.

That blinking light thing doesn't always happen, but is mostly always triggered by opening or closing a window, software...etc. And when it does, it stays blinking for a good while.

When i watch the drive light, everytime i see it blink (even when idle, it blinks every 2 secs), i get a chop in sound, mouse movement, overall performance.

I remember having the same problem at work a while ago, and the tech guy had made it all better (to my amazement) in very little time and effort. Sadly I can't remember what it was. Maybe just a setting on the HD or a memory thing, i don't know.

I tried installing the video drivers and sound drivers.

Win XP professional 2002 SP2(french version)
Intel Pentium PD CPU 3.20GHz
(Supposedly a PD 945 LGA775 Dual-Core)
2 Gig Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS
Realtek High Definition Audio

ANY help would be appreciated,

Thanks

Answer:Erratic behavior in XP

Sounds like you are having lots of trouble. Since you are saying the hard drive is always busy, and the system is laggy, I suspect the hard drive is the main problem here.

First, run a chkdisk (myComputer>(right-click the drive)>properties>tool>error checking
Also run a disk defragmentation.

The hard drive could be causing your system to be sluggish because windows relies on it for its virtual memory.

If the above steps don't work, try returning your pc to where you bought it from. Since you said it was new, I should still be under some type of a warrenty, so it can proboly be repaired for free.

Best of luck,

Question: Slow And Erratic

Running Windows 10 with all updates. I use PCMatic for protection and Windows firewall. PC has gotten slower and occasionally freezes. Reboot usually works.
Don't know if it is associated with malware but a large number of folders (462 to be exact) were created in root directory. The folders are empty but the system will not allow me to delete them. They have a "D" attribute.
Attached are the log files requested by MajorGeeks.

Answer:Slow And Erratic

Rerun RogueKiller and have it remove all it found. Do the same wih ADWcleaner.

Reboot and rescan with both and attach the new log. You don't have malware, just a lot of junkware.

Question: Erratic re-boots

Can anyone please help?
I bought my daughter & son-in-law a Packard Bell computer package which has win XP operating system. I had it posted to Germany as this is where they are based with the British Forces.
The problem is that the computer has erratic re-boots and we are at a loss as to the reason why.
We have looked into the 'event viewer' in 'My Computer' to see what errors are being reported and this is what it comes up with:
'SOURCE': = 'WSH'
(Does this mean 'windows script host'?)
Can anyone advise us what the problem is and how we might fix it?

Mouse pad jumps and moves erractically and often magnifies screen or reduces it to a small size such that neither screen can be read.  Curror jumps all over the place when typing.   Customer Support Techs have attempted to fix - I forgot trouble ticket number - by me allowing them access to my computer but in both instances the two different techs were unable to make a permanent fix.   The mouse pad is still extremely sensitive and cursor  jumps erractically around the screen.  The mouse pad is so useless that a wireless or USB mouse must be plugged in.     In my 50 plus years of computer purchase/use of both Mac and PCs, I would not recommend this model computer to anyone considering a laptop.  Bummer.

Question: Erratic Laptop

Hello, could you please look at this for me. My laptop has become very erratic. I have been getting loads of adverts flashing up.

I downloaded a trial of what I think was Rogue Killer (it has the same logo) and it flashes up lots of messages in the bottom right corner of 'trojans' it has stopped from installing.

Whilst I was writing a text document in open office it came up with a warning. Everything started flashing (desktop, text document etc) then the screen went blue (no writing). I had to use 'control alt delete' to be able to close down but it was 'closing down' for about 15 mins so I had to close with the button.

This happened 3 times, so I worked through you Run and Read me first and your malware removal info.
The scans do not appear to have found any threats, but I would appreciate you looking at them for me.

I run Avast anti-virus. Also I run Advanced System care as a cleaner and 10bit malware fighter frequently.

TDSSKiller found no threats. I could not find a log in C: and I coud not copy and paste the report to send to you.

I have attached the logs

Thanks in advance, Jan

Answer:Erratic Laptop

Your logs are all clean. What do you mean by "I have been getting loads of adverts flashing up"? Are you referring to double underlined keywords that when your mouse moves over them you see an advertisement? If so, this is normal and not malware.
