Preferred Solution: disk problems Dell running Windows XP

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I have a Dell Optiplex 745 computer running XP Pro. It was behaving erratically. This may have happened after after Windows Update automatically installed SP3. I am running IE 8 (also automatically installed by Windows Update, I think). Hoping to eliminate the problems, I got a program called PC Scan & Repair Reimage. Among the things that it reported was that the hard drive was running extremely slow. I decided to get a new hard drive. I got a program called Paragon Hard Drive Disk Manager. I attached a 500 GB Western Digital Hard Drive to the Sata cables that had been running the DVD drive. The original drive was a WD 250 GB drive. I tried many times with the support team from Paragon to clone the hard drive, doing chkdsk /r multiple times, because Paragon reported such serious errors on the drive that it could not be copied. Fially, I ran a Western Digital repair utility. That seemed to completely wipe out the Hard Drive, but finally, I managed to clone the 250 GB hard drive by installing Windows (and nothing else) on yet a 3rd drive, putting the 250 GB drive in the Sata connections where the DVD drive was and using a USB enclosure for a 3rd drive which was the target of the cloning operation. I then swapped in the cloned hard drive as the primary drive on the computer. It does run, but there are many erratic behaviours.

Part of the problem with the original drive was that I was getting the error "Files that are required to run Windows properly... Read more

My dell optiplex 740 will open windows ,so before this happened,i install windows 7 home premium instead of windows 7 professional. When it didn't install properly,my windows will not open after i restart my PC it keeps saying  The computer restart unexpectedly  or encountered an error.Windows installation cannot proceed. To install windows, click "OK"to restart the computer, and then restart the installation.this message keeps repeating itself every time i boot my pc up.I try to reset my PC factory settings, but it wouldn't work,do i need  to buy a Dell recovery disk to get my PC running?

Answer:My Dell optiplex 740 mini tower wont open windows. It wonnt install windows.it keeps repeating the same thing.Do i need to buy a Dell recovery disk?

Sounds like a faulty hard drive is the cause - F12 at powerup.  Boot to the Dell diagnostics and run an extended test (not just the quick test) on the hard drive -- you'll likely find it fails, in which case - replace the drive and reload.

I bought a new Dell i3847 and it has Windows 7 Pro 64bit factory installed on it.
I wanted to do a full system backup, but the Dell Backup and Recovery software will not allow me to do a system backup.  Further, I have been unable to create a system recovery disk using Dell Backup and Recovery.
I can't use the Dell provided system disk for recovery because it is clearly marked Windows 8.1

1) Why is a Win 8.1 disk included with a Win 7 Pro 64bit system?
2) What is wrong with Dell Backup and Recovery that it:
a) can't create a factory recovery disk
b) won't allow me to create a system back up so I can return it to the factory state

Help!

It's been 2.5 hours and it is still "initializing disk" to create a factory recovery.  It usually fails somewhere during initialization or writing.    Spending hours for each failed attempt to create a factory recovery disk is NOT GOOD!

Answer:Help! - New Dell i3847 - Windows 7 Pro - Dell Recovery Disk is Win 8.1 & DBaR won't let me do a System Backup

It has now been 4 hours and Dell Backup and Recovery is sitting on "Initializing Disk" under create Factory Recovery Media

I can't have it take hours and hours, then fail and then try again.... then take hours and hours.... then fail ... then hours ... then fail...

I'm using SystemSuite on a P2 running XP Home which recently threw up a problem and asked me to run "chkdsk /f" I can run chkdsk from start/run....but it won't do any fixing. Any hints how I go about doing this? Do I need to start the PC from the XP CD-ROM (in which case how do I force the PC to start from the CD-ROM?)Thanks,Mark

Answer:Running chkdsk /F to fix disk problems

That happens to me when i use my Norton System Works,What i normally do is click on "my computer" then right click on my drive i want to check and select properties,Then click on Tools and then click "error checkin" and then tick autamaticlly "fix file system errors and also tick "scan for and detect bad clusters. When you click ok you should get a message sayin the pc will have to resart for the checks to gain access to your diskHope this helps and you can understand me.

Hi

My Dell N5050 laptop died and I tried moving the Harddisk into a old HP Deskpro. The disk boots fine but Windows 7 DELL OEM reboots as the windows picture comes up. It then allows me to do a repair but that doesn't help. The repair report doesn't give any clue to the problem.

I am guessing it is some fundamental driver that is Dell specific. Any idea how to sort it ?

The repair will allow me to get to a dos prompt.

Welcome to our forum auror1968.

Their is a excellent chance that the OEM/SLP key, drivers and a lot more are tied to the Laptop and will not work on the Desktop.
Does you Desktop or Laptop have a Windows 7 sticker on it that looks something like this?

As noted above, everytime I try to click it the black box pops up quickly and disappears and the computer does not respond at all, I mean I can do other things but Defrag does not pop up at all. Now I recently had a hardware failure on one of the hard drives, so I replaced both hard drives that were previously installed and installed Recovery CD on a new hard drive and the drive reads in the Device Manager. As I looked at other threads, people said it could be malware, but I do have Trend Micro Anti-Virus updated and Spy Sweeper updated to date. If anyone can help, would be much appriciated.

Hi.
I want to know how to approach dell to get a copy of windows 8 operating system iso so that I can reinstall the windows on my laptop.
I have following questions regarding same:
1. What is the procedure of obtaining the Windows 8 operating system iso from DELL?
2. If dell can provide the requested, what are the charges for the same?
3. Can the OEM version of the windows 8 be installed to another computer? What I meant is that how many licenses does I get with OEM version or how many times I can reinstall the operating system during the life cycle of the product(Windows 8) using the same key?
4. If the license key is embedded in the hardware then can I use any windows 8 installer iso to reinstall the OS?

Thanks
Nitin

Answer:How to get the WIndows 8 installation disk/recovery disk from dell?

Hi Nitin,
The Windows product key is pre-installed in Dell systems. However may I know the reason why you are looking out for a disc?
If the computer is not booting up and if you want to request for a disc then you may use the below link:
http://dell.to/19q87KN  (For U.S only)
If the system is working normally, you may create a system restore disc by following the below steps in Windows 8:
(1) Move to mouse pointer to the top right corner and click on the search button.
(2) Select applications, type Dell backup and recovery and select search.
(3) On the left side you may click on the application.
(4) Once the application opens select recovery disc and create rescue disc.
OEM discs (Win8) can be installed on any Dell computers (if Windows 8 is pre-installed in that computer from factory).
It is suggested to use OEM image for re-installation purpose.

For a while (about 2.5 months now) whenever I turn my desktop on, i get an alert from dell's disk monitoring system telling me that the drive is working outside of normal specifications and that it is advisable to back up and replace the drive. I have been meaning to get a new hard drive anyway to fix this, but havent dont so yet. And recently, i turned my desktop on and it started, giving me that error, i pressed f1 to continue as usual (where it went straight into xp before, normally) , and all of a sudden as it starts up, it tells me on my desktop that windows recovered from a serious error.

Later on I recieved an error about the svchost.exe file when I was starting up, but nothing unusual after that. Then today, i turned the desktop on and it goes into xp, but then tells me that i have no internet connection, and i try to go into my routers settings and try to reconnect, but i can't access it. At first i think its a router/modem problem but here I am on my laptop and it works fine. Furthermore, when i try to restart my desktop or shut down, it doesnt do the normal process of opening the windows splash screen of shutting down, and goes straight into a quick reboot, sometimes even when i press shut down. I have run virus scans and adware to see if its any problem with that, but nothing shows up, and I dont use that desktop heavily for anything.

I am hoping that this is just all errors that are associated with my drive dying, becuase then I am not so worried.... Read more

Answer:Dell's disk monitoring system, Win XP problems

I've never used that Dell disk monitoring tool and therefor dont know how reliably it diagnoses a disk problem as that - or as you are concerned about might report a disk problem when indeed there are other hidden issues.

For now lets assume its correct.

Before i will proceed to the process of replacing the harddrive i would like to mention something to consider/ take care of before you replace your HDD.

I've used other manufacturers like Gateway, HP etc and their systems didnt actually come with a installation version of Windows (XP) but something like a "recovery disk"... or drive image. In some cases the problem is they ONLY install on a HDD that is (exactly) like the HDD shipped in the original system. Now how Dell does this you could probably find out by calling their customer support and ask them if you can install a diffrent HDD and still use your DELL WinXP - but if you cant then you have to
a) buy a Dell HDD (pricey)
b) buy another HDD but then you will also have to buy a new version of Windows XP

If you end up getting a new HDD the process of switching them is fairly simple. You open the case, unplug the old one and unscrew it - take it out. Now you take your new one, make sure its jumpered like the old one, install it (with screws) and plug it in the same way the old one was.

ok first of all let me start off with audio i bought this laptop earlier this month and i noticed after a week tht one of the speakers wasnt making any sound so i looked it up and most people said its probably a driver or a balance so i checked all sorts of sound tests balance left speaker right speaker mute or not mute (only the left speaker works) i uninstalled the drivers (realtek) tried it out with the trusted(sarcasm) windows 8 drivers  only sound tht came was left side i also checked it with it dell diagnostics  both  in windows and before windows it showed tht everything was perfect and the bios dell diagnostics had a sound check so i tried that and only had sound in the left one (so im guessing its not a windows problem). So if i have missed sumthing here pls enlighten me also i havent installed vlc or wutever sound mods so i didnt blow it up infact i dont think i ever even made my sound volume goto 100.Second problem is the damn grahics driver first time i opened my laptop it told me to check my graphics driver and started acting out (my screen was blurry) so i tried to install the latest driver which didnt help so i returned the laptop and got a new one..same problem after which i discovered that theres a specific driver that it recommended which works. Now  if any of you r assuming that oh so what just cuz the graphics driver isnt up todate it should atleast perform normally not act like sumthings broken or overheated ...well no it does anyho ... Answer:problems with dell inspiron 15 3521 : bios , graphics driver , disk cashe

azk_1yes it was the pre windows dell dignostics the one u get from f12 wen u turn the pc on
That might have been the PSA diagnostics. The Dell 32-bit Diagnostics audio tests play a short piece of music, but the PSA tests just play the system tones. Anyway, you wrote "and the bios dell diagnostics had a sound check so i tried that and only had sound in the left one". If you did not hear audio in the right speaker during the diagnostics then the speaker needs to be replaced.
azk_1bt it nevr said it self tht the speakers have a problem it said everything was fine
It doesn't matter what the tests says -- it just matters if you can hear the audio the tests play. If you can't hear it then there is a hardware problem.
azk_1and what abt the error its also before windows start ...black screen then it says checking media then fail whats tht abt
Sorry I only know about audio. This is the Dell Laptop Audio discussion board. You might want to post on one or more of the other boards with your other questions.

Answer:Windows 10 running disk at 100%

Using Resource Monitor will tell you what is causing the disk activity. That's the first place to start.

How to use the Resource Monitor in Windows 7 & Windows 8

Scroll down past the Windows 7 section, Windows 10 is similar to Windows 8.

I have Windows 10 on my laptop, and recently the disk drive in task manager will repeatedly drive itself up to 100% over the simplest tasks I ask the computer to do and slow the computer down to unmanageable levels or crash altogether. I ask it run antivirus or anti-malware, 100%. Open Chrome, 100%. Open a Word document, 100% Nothing I do fixes it. I've used every "solution" that a Google search throws at me, but only some of them work, and even then only for a few moments before it kicks itself into a tantrum again. Any advice on what to do, that isn't simply "Google it"?

It's a lot to ask - any help appreciated!

Answer:Dell Inspiron running Windows XP

First -- NO ONE should be using XP online for any purpose -- it's been over three years since that OS saw any security updates.
That said, it sounds like the problem is with the networking stack on the system - if you must use it, try reinstalling the network drivers.
That community service organization should be made to understand the potential liabilities of running an insecure OS online -- it isn't hard to imagine personal data being easily compromised if that system is used online.

I would like to install windows 7 on my old Dell Dimension 4700c which currently runs windows xp.
I have been told that it is not possible to do an upgrade from xp to 7.
Is it possible to do a clean install?
Or do I need to first upgrade to windows vista and is this possible.
I recently purchased the windows 7 disk from dell online.
Thank you

Answer:Is a clean install of windows 7 on a dell dimension 4700c running windows xp pro possible?

It depends on the disc you purchased.  It will need to be a full copy of Windows 7 (not an upgrade edition) with a new license key.  If that's what you purchased, you should be set.
If what you purchased is an upgrade disc with no license key, you're not going to be able to do a clean install.

Hello. I've seem to run into a bit of trouble. You see, I can't run the windows disk-defrag application. When trying to run it normally or as administrator, nothing happens. Absolutly nothing. I then tried to run the application via command line. . .

As you can see it just immediately stops. The odd thing is, this is a pretty fresh install of windows 8. I've changed my wallpapers, installed clasic shell, and installed some games and that's pretty much it. I've had it installed for less than a week. I've tried to google solutions for something like this but I haven't found anything. I'm hoping to find a solution here.

There is a registry hack to allow XP to receive security updates but it is not recommended using it.

If you do not want XP on the computer consider installing a small linux distro. The computer came with 512MB of RAM according to the Specs. That is pushing it for XP let alone Vista. I doubt you would have a good experience with Vista on the D830 and perhaps that is why somebody installed XP.

I bought my Studio XPS 8100 in March of 2010. It runs a clean install of Windows 10 very well. I wonder: are there other Dell PCs of that vintage or older that successfully run Windows 10?
Over the years I upgraded the hardware by adding a new power supply, graphics card and additional RAM. I also added an SSD as the boot drive and made the original HDD my data drive. I added a USB 3.0 card to accommodate USB 3.0 devices. Everything else is stock.
Windows 10 is the fourth OS to run on this computer. I replaced the original Windows 7 with a clean install of Windows 8, followed by clean installs of Windows 8.1 and now Windows 10. Dell doesn't support any of these operating systems on the Studio XPS 8100, but that clearly makes no difference.

Answer:old dell computer running Windows XP some what slow

Typically slowness can be down to accumulated "junk" files, temp files, seriously fragmented drive...; cookies, an extensive history...Have you run the windows disk cleanup utility?Try that for a start. Then perhaps run a couple of cleaner utils...Suggest run in this order:Adwcleaner - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...malwarebyter - https://www.malwarebytes.org/free/ccleaner - http://www.filehippo.com/download_c...Be aware of course that a Celeron is a nobbled processor. The full blown chip has (as I understand it) a maths co- processor, whereas the Celeron doesn't. In effect it's been nobbled... So it will never really spin along a rate of knots compared to the full blown cpu; and thus will be a little tardy, slow, sluggish with most current games? The graphics card too will effect how it performs with games...Incidentally, what model Dell do you have?message edited by trvlr

The computer is packed with viruses and it's nearly unusable, and I think a factory reset is my only option. When I click Get started on the option in the Recovery tab of the Update and Recovery section in the PC Settings, It brings up a screen that says "Please wait" and in smaller text below that a spinning circle of dots and the word "preparing." I recently purchased a Dell Precision 490 with hopes of being able to run W7 x64 on it.

After installing it without a hitch, i can't get any USB device to work other than my wireless keyboard and mouse set (made by Acer).

The system will make the USB noises when plugged in / unplugged, but immediately will pop up a message stating "USB device not recognized" and an Unknown Device will show up in the Device Manager. I've tried a Neat Receipt scanner, multiple USB flash drives of varying sizes, and a WD My Studio external USB drive.

Beneath Universal Serial Bus controllers in Device Manager, I see 5x Intel 631xESB/6321ESB/3100 Chipset with Driver by Intel version 7.4.0.1005 dated 9.15.2006 I've tried loading numerous different chipset drivers, etc. None have made a difference.

Dell's support site only has drivers for up to Vista x64.

Another detail: I've got the Firewire port on the front of the case working!!

What gives? Any and all advice appreciated.

Answer:USB not working on Dell Precision 490 running Windows 7 x64

Generally the Intel motherboard chipset drivers are all that's needed for the USB on the hardware end. The only drivers are the default built in Windows drivers.

Dell lists Vista 32/64 drivers and the Vista drivers are applicable to Windows 7, so you shouldn't have problems getting it working. If you just accessed the Dell downloads based on the Service Tag number that will only show what it was delivered with. My link below will get you the Vista drivers. Windows, when installing, will install many device drivers however with the Dell proprietary hardware (especially on older systems such as this), you really need the Dell drivers. I see what looks like a full complement of drivers on the Dell site for Vista. Maybe a new install is needed. The correct install sequence on a Dell is (1) Install Windows (2) Install the Dell desktop system software - on applicable models (3) Install Intel motherboard chipset drivers (4) Install device drivers including video, sound, Ethernet, etc. I used to do a lot of support on the Dell forums and if this sequence is followed in almost all cases it will result in a good install.

Hello,
I am interested in buying the Dell XPS 15 9560, but due to the privacy nightmare that is Windows 10 I want to clean install Windows 7. Long story short I disabled almost everything on the privacy menu on Windows 10 on my desktop and they switch back to re-enabled when I do a Windows Update which is pretty sketchy.
Has anyone done this? Which features no longer work with Windows 7? Any driver issues? Thank you for the feedback.

Answer:Any issues running Windows 7 on the the Dell XPS 15 (9560)?

Windows 7 is not supported on the Kaby Lake platform (this model).
The only version of Windows that supports Kaby Lake is windows 10 -- the Skylake platform (9350) was the last one with Windows 7 support.

If you get the error Windows Repair Disk has stopped working when trying to make a repair disk in backup and recovery here's why it happens and how to fix it.
(thanks to auggy for this solution on the MS forums.)
the issue is with the DBROverlayIcon.dll which is a component of Dell Backup and Recovery (Dell Backup And Recovery Shell Extension).
To workaround the issue go to the following folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Dell Backup and Recovery\Components\Shell
In that folder right-click the DBROverlayIcon.dll and rename it to DBROverlayIcon.old
If successful creating a repair disk you can rename the DBROverlayIcon.old back to DBROverlayIcon.dll

I hope someone from Dell reads these forums because this is an error that should have got past a functional quality test case package.

Hi Team,
I have recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 13 5378 2-in-1 model laptop running with Microsoft Windows 10 Home OS and from the moment it has been started, I have been observing extremely slow performance issue being caused by 100% disk usage showing in "Task Manager".
There isn't anything being installed on the system yet, and still its taking ages to open any utility window (task manager, system properties etc.) with really poor performance. I am continuously observing 100% Disk usage without even running anything. This doesn't seems to be an healthy scenario.
I am already done through diagnostics test rub and clean boot, however nothing has helped me.Kindly assist as this laptop is completely unusable for me.

Thanks,Saurabh

As you can see, despite the fact that the usage is only 3.1 mb/s the disk usage says it is at 100% I've read other threads and have attempted multiple fixes, turning off different services, including Background information transfer service, and also disabling many startup programs, also I have tried increasing the allotted size of my paging file, It has gone away at the moment, but I am scared that something will happen due to the fact that this seems to happen allot upon startup, please give me any advice you can. (It appears I didn't have this problem until post windows 8.1 update DX)

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7. I try to turn on my computer, it goes through the Dell logo screen and comes up to a black screen with a blinking white cursor in the upper left corner and will not go any further. I have pushed F2 and F12 during the Dell logo screen, but nothing there will help me in anyway. I have run the diagnostics for my computer, but it reports no errors, everything passes. I have also tried hitting the F8 and Ctrl+F11 keys during the Dell logo screen, but neither of these do anything, I have the OS disc for reinstallation, but because of the computer not going past the black screen with the white blinking cursor in the upper left corner, I cannot reinstall Windows because it will not restart correctly. What do I do?

Answer:My Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 won't boot. What do I do?

If you have not run the extended (takes a couple of hours) hard drive test, that's first. F12 at powerup.  IF the drive passes the extended test, then you will likely be faced with a manual install of Windows.  Start by ordering a Windows disc:

Upgraded an old Optiplex 390 to Windows 10 Pro.  More accurate is purchased this computer second hand, and someone upgraded to windows 10 pro.  However, it had critical error every time it booted.  So reloaded Windows 10 Pro, and it works correctly.  However, can not get the ethernet to work.  I've tried disabling (then enable), tried deleting & rebooting, tried downloading drivers from internet.  But nothing.  It's using a Realtek.  Any suggestions?  Thanks

JBROOKS92,
Unfortunately, Windows 10 is not supported by Dell on this system. This means that Dell has not created any Windows 10 drivers for the hardware.  If no Windows 10 drivers are installed the hardware may not work properly.

This computer I am talking about is a Dell 4600 running XP, in the tag it said an Acer but that is my other computer , since support is terminated on the 8th of this month I wanted to install windows 7. The problem I am having is when I put the disc in the drive, sometimes it is suppose to pop up on screen to load, however this machine does not. My problem is I opened my computer and clicked on the c drive to try and open this but nothing happens, it does not even show on the C drive that there is a disc in the drive waiting to be installed. Can any friends out there give me a hand installing windows 7, it would be very much appreciated, thank you..message edited by oldboose

i bought a dell laptop with microsoft xp.; with microsoft product key cose , iactivated laptop by calling microsoft tech support with product number. tried to use dvd but dvd read: "decoder Error" do not have interet access, can i somehow fix problem without internet access

Answer:decoder error dvd in dell running xp and windows expolrer

Personally I wouldn't use a computer that has no access to the internet these days. There is no built in software codec in Windows of any version that can decode encrypted DVDs, which is what pre-recorded ("factory") DVDs for movies or videos are. You must install a DVD player program that has a built in software codec that can decode DVDs, such as Power DVD. Once you have installed at least once such program, you can also play DVDs in Windows Media Player, at least you can in newer versions of WMP. If you have an (XP) MCE 20xx version, you can then also play DVDs in Media Center. E.g. CDs or DVDs that come with retail desktop mboards, or the free CD or DVD that often comes with a "bulk" desktop optical drive, often has a free version of Power DVD or some other DVD player program that has the necessary software codec. OR - Buy Power DVD or some other DVD player program that has the necessary software codec at a local place that has software for computers - it has more features when it's a "paid" version. .

The situation: I have a friend who couldn't get her computer to run correctly. The tachnology teacher couldn't help her so them, both knowing I was tech savvy and going to college next year to be a programmer, came to me looking to see if I could fix it. I thought I knew what it needed. Im primarily a mac user but i know my way around a PC. Apparently not.
The computer: dell mini Inspiron 910 with intel atom "running" (if you can call it that) on windows xp.
The problem: the computer will boot up as normal and load into a set user. All seems fine until 5-10 seconds later the windows chime sounds. If you so much as try to drag a desktop icon or even click on it. The whole system freezes. So of course I do ctrl-alt-delete. Task manager comes up and everything seems normal. I then try to quit one that's taking up a good bit of ram, but isn't taking any CPU energy. It doesn't quit of course. Then I reboot like 5 times and try again and again. Finally I go to the dell system check test thing at the start up, run each (literally) test and what does it find? Nothing. I mean I could run a repair program if I had the disk or it even loaded. But I also would delete all her files because obviously a flash drive is going to hurt its (the computer, not my friend) small little brain. Weird thing is, the screen saver still works perfectly even at a good frame rate. Please help diagnose and solve. I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software proble... Read more

Hi there
Since we are booting directly into a VHD this topic isn't really about Virtualisation per se -- so whether this post should be moved to Virtualisation --leave that for the Mods.

Seems to me that running W8 from a VHD directly (I.E no HOST OS installed) would be really efficient and a better way of "Virtualisation" than traditional methods using Vmware / VBOX.

You could say boot from a USB drive on to ANY computer.

The overhead would be minimal since no HOST OS and you use THE REAL HARDWARE.

I think you need W8 Pro or above to boot directly into a VHD.

Note that this refers to W8 Consumer edition -- it's exactly the same for "Real Windows 8".

Hey i have a hardrive i took out of a computer that died, it would turn off after beginning to boot up. I bought a sata adapter and hooked it up to my macbook but im only able to access the area i partitioned for downloads. i tried to run disk repair on the part of the drive that wasn't accessible but it just said it was unable to repair disk, im thinking this is because its a windows drive and mac disk repair isn't compatible. Im thinking the part of the drive i cant access is messed up from the computer failing to boot up fully, or is it possible this part is damaged and thats why the computer wouldnt boot up in the first place. if anyone has any ideas whats up id appreciate the help.

Too many unknowns here for me to help much.

What did you create the image with, and what partitions did you backup/restore ?
Macrium, Acronis, AOMEI, Windows built-in backup program, etc. ?

Your specs show Win 7 Enterprise.

Problem is my dell laptop doesn't appear to have come with an install disk for windows 7. It does, however, come with a disk called 'application', 'drivers and utilities', 'resource media' and 'roxio creator strater'. There isn't a possibilty that my OS is hiding one of these is there?

If you didn't remove the hidden recovery partition, you can restore your PC using that. Depending on what Dell machine you have, you can either restore with backup discs or with a built in startup command. Use one of the methods below:

1. Download/Buy a recovery disc here.
2. Press CTRL + F11 during bootup, choose to restore the system.

I have an older Dell laptop that is running Windows XP. It's been working fine lately, though I've always had problems with it. I just ran a virus/malware check two days ago and cleaned everything up. I haven't used it since then, but today I pressed the power button and waited for it to startup. I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 531 at a garage sale. It came with a version of Vista that was cluttered up, full of viruses and in general full of problems. I don't like Vista anyway (I generally run Kubuntu or Mint for most of my computing), and I have a generic MS Windows XP sp2 install pack laying around. After installing XP, I loaded my linux OS's as usual, with no problems. The problem is with the XP install. It appears that Dell, in it's wisdom, made the Inspiron 531 specifically for Vista and the standard drivers available on Dell's site don't function well with XP (can't connect with the Web, graphics "roll-over" with the bottom showing at the top of the screen, and generally don't work well with the onboard graphics card 'Nvidia GeForce 6150'). Does anyone know a scource for drivers that will 'work-around' this issue? I know that the order the drivers are installed is important, so I wiped the drive and made a fresh install of Windows with no changes. The system setup is: Dell Inspiron 531 with AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ running at 2.0 Ghz with 4Gbs memory. I am set up for triple boot on two HDDs running Kubuntu 12.10 and Linux Mint Maya on one 260gb Hd and Windows XP Home edition Sp2 on a 40Gb Hd. I've searched this site and seen mention of a couple of users with XP running on this model, but no mention of the preferred drivers. Dell has been no help, as this is a discontinued model. Ignoring whether it "shows up", what happens when you set your BIOS to boot from the DVD drive first and then restart your PC with the installation disc in the DVD drive?

Hi All,

I'm running into a significant amount of trouble trying to re-install my copy of Windows 7 Professional (x64). I recieved my new Dell Studio 1557 yesterday, and was installing all my new software etc only to be met with a various and (pretty much) unsolvable blue screen error about 12 hours into the process.

Anyway, after an agonising few hours on the phone with Dell Customer Support, they suggested that I do a clean/manual install of the O/S from the Boot Disk I was provided.

I have attempted to do this several times now, selecting F12 as the computer restarts and choosing to boot from CD/DVD drive. However, each time I am met with this error:

Quote:
0xc0000001

FILE: \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe

"The selected entry could not be loaded..."

Would copying the boot CD contents to a USB HDD, then booting from there help?

If anyone is able to help me out with this, that would be fantastic. It's so frustrating that I just bought a new system, and already it's died!!!!

Cheers,

Ben.

Answer:Dell Windows 7 Boot Disk will not function (0xc0000001)

Welcome!

Sounds like you got a bad installation disc. That would explain your first problem too.

I would recommend contacting Dell and having them send you new installation discs.

You can try creating a USB installation key first if you like. It certainly can't hurt. Be sure to read this tutorial: USB Windows 7 Installation Key Drive - Create

Windows 10 did me in (Show me the way to go home (back to W8.1) - Windows 10 Forums), so I want to throw in the towel and build my Windows 8 system from scratch - I have all my files and list of installed apps with their configs. I ordered and received the Windows 8 recovery disk for my computer from Dell.

Except, when I boot the disk, it prompts me to enter the product key. Isn't it supposed to read it from the BIOS on the motherboard?

I should add: Over the summer, I had to have the motherboard replaced. It, too, came from Dell. I presume the technician had the product key reinstalled, because it was working fine at the time.

When I called Dell, they told me to enable legacy boot and make sure secure boot was off. I did both those things, but got the same result. I see there are a myriad of programs out there that will read the product key, but... You guessed it: You need administrative access. And I lost it, when I upgraded to Windows 10.

I could call Dell, but since my system is now out of warranty, they want to charge me for support.

Can anyone help me with this unmitigated disaster?

Dan

Answer:Dell Windows 8 recovery disk does not read product key

Dell discs normally are pre-activated and do not require entering a product key. However, you should have a sticker with the product key to use. If its a laptop its usually in the battery compartment. On a desktop its usually on the back or bottom.

Dell has a free forum with users, like this forum, that will help.

When I run scandskw.exe, scan disk for windows, it restarts 10 times before I get an error message that tells me that it has restarted because another program **or Windows** is running and trying to write to the same drive.

Of course, scandskw.exe will not run in DOS mode.

How can I make this task work??!

Answer:Scan disk for Windows won't run while Windows is running.

Try shutting down any programs running in the backround by going to CTL+ALT+DEL and end tasking all but Explorer and Systray. Then make sure any Screen Saver is disabled. Then try Scandisk again.

Hi All,

So I have a little bit of a problem that I've tried to fix myself but got nowhere. I was given a Dell Vostro 220 running Windows 7 Enterprise (I assume 64bit) that has university settings all over it. Basically, I can't log in because I would need a university account and would have to be connected to the university server.

That's really all I can get out of this computer. I'd really like to be able to log in and just use it, but I can't because of the Enterprise settings.

So, if anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate a hand.

Thank you!

Answer:Restoring Dell Vostro running Windows 7 Enterprise to factory settings

Hmm, that is a bit of a problem. Unfortunately the Win7 Enterprise download was closed. So you cannot get an iso. Unless you have a recovery partition on the PC, it will be difficult. With a recovery partition it would be easy.

Severe display problems with N7110 after Windows 10 "upgrade".  Screen goes grey, stripy, or dark; some of it might still be readable sometime -- but usually not.  Problem is random and persistent.

I have run into an incredibly odd issue with my inspiron n17110 while running windows 10. It appears that the dell drivers are malfunctioning, and the result is not pretty.

The graphic driver is not the issue. Dell's software is. I have eliminated both graphic cards from the cause.
What got me to point the finger at dell is that when I press the physical button on the top right of the base that turns off the screen (sort of like a "force to screensaver") is pressed and then the screen woken up, the issue is immediately resolved. I'm fairly disappointing that a device that is less that 4 years old has still not had a critical issue like this resolved yet.
I guess my question is, has anyone else experienced this, and is there any way to fix it for the time being? Thanks!

Answer:Dell inspiron N7110 running Windows 10- severe graphical issues

 ethanz,
Unfortunately, Dell does not have any Windows 10 drivers available for this computer. It has not been tested for the Windows 10 upgrade. You may have issues with the hardware on this computer if you have no Windows 10 drivers.

Ok I have read on here the post regarding the fix about this however I everything applies to windows XP. I need to know if the fix would work on windows 7 just the same?? Please help. The keyboard and mouse are USB and are not recognized in anyway. Thanks a bunch!!

Answer:Keybaord and Mouse not recognized on Dell Dimension 9150 running Windows 7

Can you post a link to the other post?

Having worked on hundreds of Dell's, I can say that we ran into this problem where occasionally, a USB keyboard or mouse would not be recognized by BIOS, every time. Since we had stacks of keyboards and boxes of mice, we would just grab a different one and try that. Usually that would do it. Once in a while, changing the BIOS to try to boot to CD first would work so I always thought it was a timing issue with BIOS. Nothing to be done about it other then search for the latest BIOS upgrade and take the chance of ruining the mobo if it failed.

So, try these tricks:

1) Set BIOS to boot from CD first (but leave it empty).
2) Check that your USB setting in BIOS is set for Legacy USB.
3) Try different keyboards and mice if possible.

The biggest hassles I had with the Dell's was getting a USB/wireless mouse or keyboard to work. Sometimes gave up and went with the wired USB devices.

Once you post the link, I'll go check that other fix.

hi there,

i am a new user, and since past week my laptop has not been operating correctly. I am not a techie person, but feel I am fairly good with computers in general, but this problem I have is a strange one.

I am using a Dell Inspiron on Vista, and recently every time I start up my laptop, I see the big Dell logo load up as normal, and then it goes to the blue updates screen, and then runs the timer saying 'update 1 of 3' and it will run up to nearly 100% complete for the first update and then the laptop will turn off by itself, restart and then its back to the same updates screen again. This will keep happening continuously each time I switch the system on. Its nothing to do with the power either as this happens even when its plugged in.

One time I actually switched it on (after it being off for 3 days) and it loaded onto the normal Windows menu screen, and I instantly loaded my Kaspersky software to run a scan, which it started, and then the laptop shut down and then again back to the blue updates screen, which it has been doing constantly since then.

I even tried the Diagnostics scan which you do on start up by pressing F12 (I think), which didn't come up with any problems, and then when Diagnostics scan was finished, it again went back to the blue updates screen.

I even tried pressing Ctrl + F11 on switching on the laptop, trying to get it to erase everything and go back to factory standard, but even that wasn't working. I don't mind losing ... Read more

Hi,

Can you boot into safe mode?

Switch on your laptop and instantly start tapping F8, if you get to the selection screen, select Safe Mode.

If this works trying restoring your laptop back to a day or two before you downloaded the latest updates for now.

Hello:I had a hard drive crash on an Inspiron 5100 running WIndows XP Pro, replaced it with a newer computer, but now need to upgrade a separate machine controller PC that was running W98. That hardware cannot be upgraded past Windows XP.So I formatted the crashed drive from the Inspiron 5100 along with a 2nd hard drive and proceeded to install XP Pro SP2 from an OEM install kit. I installed the product code that came with the OEM kit, but afterward wondered if I should have used the product code that was on the Inspiron 5100 case. I wasn't sure the OEM pack would like a different product code, and I only mention this in case it has anything to do with the setup problems I am having with reincarnating the Inspiron 5100.

The BIOS is A03 (2006) and it has a Dell-unique appearance and operation compared to the generic Phoenix and other common BIOS found on non-Dell many motherboards. The Dell MB will run diagnostics on one of the drives but not the other, after successfully wiping and running diagnostics on them with 3rd party resources (UBCD). The Dell says no boot drive found initially but  pressing F1 allowed Windows to load anyway.I pulled the CMOS battery hoping it would forget its past life, replaced it with a new one and it's even less educated than before...it fails a floppy seek test. I tried to install a floppy drive, but realized there is no FDC cable present, and I haven't found an FDC port on the MB (yet). I aborted the FD install goal and now just ... Read more

Hey guys,

The HDD on my laptop recently took a turn for the worst and started clicking like crazy - it's always been a little faulty, but the PC wouldn't boot successfully for a few days After a few small knocks to try and loosen the head, the drive now works properly - I used Puppy Linux, running from a USB pen, to try and backup a few files, but it then informed me that the filesystem required checking. I downloaded a Windows 7 recovery disk, booted it up and the automatic repair utility informed me that there were startup issues I could correct relating to the filesystem....that was three days ago. The drive is spinning, and the recovery environment appears to be working, but my disk is only 500GB large, and I'm not entirely sure whether it should be taking this long - before I selected the automatic repair utility, I tried to run ChkDsk /r from the command line, but I was informed that the drive was locked. Could this be the issue? I have seen on a few forums that the drive being regarded as locked is a known and easily resolved issue, and I'd really like to know if it's safe to do a hard restart while the recovery disk claims to be repairing the filesystem.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, dual SeaGate 500GB HDDs. 4GB DDR3 RAM and an Intel Core i5 processor, if that helps any. Thanks in advance!

Answer:Hard drive repair running from Windows 7 Recovery Disk for 3 days?

It may never stop. You'll probably have to shut it down. There are no repairs that take that long.

But it doesn't look too good for that hard drive. Is it encrypted or password-protected?

Anyone have any information on a particular problem with dell computors booting from the cd rom drive or dvd drive. My problem is I have tried to do a boot from my XP installation cd and the resource cd (both bootable discs) to bring windows up into recovery console. Both these disks were included in my purchase of the unit direct from Dell. After doing some checking on this issue i found many suggestions on how it might be done. So far it doesn't work the conventional way just pop it in and boot. doesn't work if you reset the boot sequence, and it doesn't work if you try to disable the SATA drive, and different variations of turning on and off either of the two optical drives. After selecting boot cdrom at the boot option window it always says cdrom is unavailable. Now Dell has not posted a solution to this issue on the support web site it only suggests the doing the same steps i have tried. Several users have this issue which have posted in various blogs but no one seems to have a fix. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello, I would be grateful for any advice about how to get into the BIOS for the above machine. I have tried the suggested methods posted on many other forums, but to no positive result. I would like to upgrade form a 32 Bit system to a 64 bit system by carrying out a clean install, but I cannot get to the BIOS to change the initial boot drive to the USB drive.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Answer:Dell Dimension E521 running Windows 10 PRO (1607) Unable to access BIOS

What version of Windows is running now?
Connect the bootable USB stick to the PC while it's turned off. Then power on and press F12. You should see the USB on the list of boot options.
Keep in mind that Dell hasn't tested this model for compatibility with Win 10, and you may have to dig around to find suitable drivers, if Win 10 doesn't have them for your hardware.

My Dell XPS 13 (L321X) with Win7 Home Premium has been have strange battery issues that I believe are linked to a software issue keeping it from charging. During the course of my investigation into the matter I found the windows diagnostic tool which I decided
to run to see if the battery itself was faulty. I rebooted into the setup screen and chose the standard level full diagnostic.  It said my battery was nearing the end of its usable life and the test continued to end of the standard memory.  Everything
passed and I opted out of the extended memory check...

Now I exit and reboot to a powered on beeping laptop.  The beep code is 4 beeps repeating corresponding to a memory read/write failure.  I also notice the laptop was rather hot after the test...

Has anyone else experienced or have any possible remedies?  If there is a memory failure I have to trash the whole thing because the memory is soldered into the motherboard and move on to data recovery.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Answer:Dell Inspiron Model !5R N5110 Running windows 7 64 Bit..Laptop Battery Problem

Almost always it is the battery. The test is to try another battery. * Eventually you need another battery anyway. The average life of laptop batteries is about 2 years for many users. * Yes, there are testers for laptop batteries. Such a tool for commercial use costs more than  a new battery. You can use a common mufti meter, but you need a new battery to use as a reference. Sooner or later you have to buy a battery, even to prove the problem is the motherboard. You don't want it to be the motherboard.

Just bought an Inspiron 5759 from Dell Canada.
Touchpad is very squirrelly - move around and it randomly perceives a click hence starts moving or invoking stuff.  Try to click left or right button (bottom left or right of touchpad) and the cursor moves so I can click on wrong thing easily.  Looked for Touchpad settings under Control Panel Mouse.  Nothing there specific to touchpad - just generic mouse settings.  Looked in Device Manager - Mouse and Pointing Devices - see HIID compliant mouse and PS2 compatible mouse.   Driver for either is from Microsoft dated 2006.
Ok - load newest driver from dell.com.  Claims it installs ok - wrong.  The Dev Mgr shows same Microsoft drivers.  Manually force driver to Synaptics - Dell TouchPad.  Looks like it succeeds.  Now, Dev Mgr shows two mouse devices: Dell Touchpad and PS2 Compatible mouse.  Try control panel - Mouse.  Now I see a Dell Touchpad tab but the only field - Change Dell Touchpad settings - does nothing.
Spent 6 hours trying to get help from Dell Support - worst experience with any support organisation (other than HP who managed to toast a notebook via remote control while trying to install a printer driver - never did work.)  Absolutely no improvement in situation.  Four times put on hold and line drops.  Considering strongly returning the notebook.
Went to BestBuy and looked at 8 Inspiron  and XPS computers on demo.  Not a sin... Read more

Answer:Inspiron and XPS laptops running Windows 10 cannot install Dell/Synaptics Touchpad driver

With Win 10, touchpad drivers are found in the Win 10 Settings, selected in the Start Menu. In addition, many newer laptops are using a Precision touchpad, a Microsoft inspired pad. The driver is incorporated in Windows itself, and a regular driver will not work. This is why you don't see anything in the "old" Windows Control Panel app or in the Device Manager.
