I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

In Windows 8.1, after turning on active windows tracking (Focus only) by registry tweak, whenever mouse cursor hovers on the start button the focus gets locked onto the start button. To bring focus back onto something else left/right-click/alt+tab is required.

Is it possible to avoid this with active windows tracking on?
I mean, can the mouse hover on start button, get the focus on the start button and moving the mouse to other window will get the focus on the windows without clicking/alt+tab?

Hi all,

Whenever I have two seperate apps in the windows 7 taskbar and decide to close one of them, the focus doesnt automatically switch to the one remaining window, instead I have to physically click on it to bring the focus to it. Its really annoying and was wondering if there was a workaround?

Thanks

Answer:Method to switch focus to front window

Interesting. Does the problem occur even after a restart?

There may be a program grabbing the attention away.

When did this start happening?

Have you changed anything in your system lately?

Anyone know how to prevent Windows from bringing the window with the input focus to the front of the screen? It's most annoying!

Consider the following example:

I have a screen shot of a WEP key that I want to type into my Network Settings but everytime I click the input focus into the network settings window it comes to the front and I can't see the WEP key any more!

The basic problem is that Windows always brings the window with the input focus to the front regardless of where you want it. This results in the need to drag windows alll over the place and resize them to see both at the same time.

Other operating systems don't do this!

Surely there must be a way of turning it off in 'Doze?

Thanks for your replies

I periodically lose focus on my currently active window. It happens like once every 2 minutes when I was using Firefox and watching a movie. It's like the mouse is clicking on the desktop by itself. I think it might be spyware, like a hidden popup, but when I ran Adaware and HijackThis it didn't find anything. So, any idea what it could be?

Hello all,

I have been experiencing some window focus loss and it's especially noticeable while gaming.
I would be gaming and then I would lose focus on the game and have to click back in manually.

Sometimes it doesn't happen but then sometimes it occurs very often within 10 seconds apart.

I ran Malwarebyte and window defender and came back empty. It has to be some external program that is making windows lose focus but I can't seem to find what it is. I thought it was pingzapper so i removed it but the problem still occurs.

I did have some Malware previously that made utorrent not work and mute my mic but those have been removed.

PS note: I would also hear the windows chime from time to time but have nothing on the screen shows up.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Nataku

Answer:Active program Window Losing Focus Issue

FYI.

I have already tried disabling windows error reporting and disabling windows for checking solutions but still the problem persisted.

I don't have any wireless programs either which sometimes causes these problems.

HP Envy, Core i7, Win8 x64  Every 15 seconds the active window will lose focus for a moment, the fraame becomes greyed-out and if I am typing I lose letters during the focus shift, very frustrating.  This has been happening rehardless of what programs are running or which is active so it is not isolated to one software. I have tried rebooting, turning off the touchpad and using a mouse, turning off unecessary devices, disablind all possible start programs, disabled anti-virus software, all to no avail.  Has this been seen before, if so what is the cure?

Hi @LisaRCT Welcome to the HP Support Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I'll have to be honest and say that I have never seen the active windows suddenly lose focus like you are describing but I will be happy to help you with this. I have done some research and discovered that others had this issue as well. There doesn't seem to be a simple solution to this as most people seem to agree it is software or something else installed taking control that you just don't see. This Microsoft Answers page has a few steps for you to try. There is a link on the page for doing a clean boot that mentions Windows 7 and Vista but I checked it also contains information for Windows 8 as well.  Give those steps a try and let me know how it goes.

Hello.

For a few days now, I've had this problem. Any active window will lose focus after a short while, and I have to click the window to continue what I was doing. While running programs in full screen, they will likewise lose focus and minimize.

I have searched for solutions and tried any I could find, but so far I've had no luck. I even found a topic on this forum from 2010, but that was also a dead end. I have formatted my OS drive and reinstalled, but nothing has helped. There are no error messages or pop-up prompts, and no other window seems to be stealing the focus.

This is slowly driving me crazy, and I would greatly appreciate it if someone could help me out.

Hi there,
So this has been driving me nuts for a little while now.
I like to use active window tracking, and have it triggered after a few seconds....4000ms

Thing is, the only posts i came across on the net is a quick regedit to enable it...not really tweak it per say.

Looks something like this:

"
Start>Run>Regedit
Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse
Modify/Create DWORD Value of Data type REG_DWORD Named [ActiveWindowTracking]
Setting for Value Data: [0 = ActiveWindowTracking Disabled / 1 = ActiveWindowTracking Enabled]
"

Well that greats and all...but it just toggles it on or off....it dont let me set the time delay to activate the new window.

The only app i came across to do this exactly the way i like it is Tuneup Utilities.
Which is a nice app, but i only need the reg keys to do what it does....not gonna buy an app for just that...

But here's the catch....for the life of me i cant find the reg keys it modifies to both enable window tracking, and set the delay to say, 4000ms.
Even tried process monitor to see what it changes with no luck...BAH

Where im going with all this...Id really like to make a .bat or .reg file to make these quick changes later on when need be...
Pic attached...
Any ideas?
Thanks for reading, any and all help is greatly appreciated.

The department in which I work has three computers running Windows 2000, all are similar or the same in hardware setup EXCEPT that the computer I'm experiencing the following problem on has an upgraded video card (nVidia) which allows two monitors to be plugged in at once (at one time this tower had two monitors side by side, but currently only one), and I'm only experiencing the "problem" with this computer. If I am ALT-TABbing between two windows, doing something in each, if I have to wait for a process to complete, or for a web page to load (in IE)--basically any type of non-immediate response--and I switch from that window or program currently processing to another to continue working, once the refresh or the process is finished, that window/program becomes the active window and forces its way to the front, interrupting any typing I was doing in the second window. I know this is different on the other two computers because when doing the same thing (with the same programs and IE), instead of the window with latest "Refresh" or recent process completion forcing its way to the front, it's corresponding task bar rectangle with simply flash blue (to let you know there's been recent activity in a specific program or window). At first I though this was only with IE, but it turns out I only noticed it there because web pages are most often the type of process that do not load instantly and take a moment while data is downloaded. I later found it to be any program (for instance t... Read more

More than likely your Registry Cleaner has messed up your Windows registry causing your problems.
You might try doing a System Restore to a date/time before you used your Registry Cleaner.

When I put the mouse over an application window, that application automatically becomes the active window. This is annoying when one window is full screen (e.g. IE) and another is smaller (e.g. the Calculator). You open the smaller application window and it disappears behind the larger one, because the cursor is on the large app. window.

I checked the accessibility options, but nothing there that can be unticked.

I have run Adaware (you never know).

Any hints, or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,

David.

I notice that when i launch a new program in Vista, that sometimes they do not come to the front which is most annoying to me. For example I have a shortcut key on my keyboard assigned to the calculator. When I press it, the program launches, but ends up blinking in the program bar at the bottom of the screen. I then have to click on it to bring it to the front so I can see it. This happens with several other programs, but not all and I am not sure why. Can anyone offer a solution to this?

Many thanks,
Houston

This started this morning. Running Windows 10 Pro. I can run the browser (Chrome), luckily. Word also. But I cannot most other apps (I think), like WinSCP, but not Calc, not Notepad++, not Notepad. If I try to run Calc, it loads in the task try and if I hover the mouse over it I can see the image of it. Same with Notepad++, But if I click on the icon, nothing happens. Word is fine when loading or clicking on the task try icon. Same with Chrome. Same with Edge, Firefox, Visual Studio. So far, limited to Notepad, Notepad++ and Calc but there could be more.

More: Explorer as well.

WELL, not exactly. I use a program called Agent Ransack to search the desktop. I don't use it much but I know that you can click on an Explorer icon and choose the folders you want to search. I did that and explorer came up OK. BUT not from the Start Menu or task bar.

Unfortunately running Explorer from this program limits me to selecting folders.

Answer:Cannot bring some apps to the front

Switch to and bring to the front in Task Mgr does nothing.

If I run Word and then File->Open-Browse, I can use Explorer no problem. Just not from Start or Task Bar.

Hello, trying to find some key+click combination to bring all windows for a given application to the top of z-order. For example, I have several Putty terminal windows open in the stacked taskbar icon and I want to display all of them, not just the last used. The only work-around I have found so far is to shift+right-click and "minimize all windows" followed by "restore all windows". Any simpler way to do this?

Answer:Bring to front all windows for a certain application

+1 +1 +1...
Completely surprised that this has received no response in almost two years (698 days). Are droidix and I the only Win7 users who use more than one window of the same application and would like to bring them all to front at once?.

Without even going into third party applications - what if you just want to open two or more explorer windows to copy files from folder to folder? Win7 has given us new "side-by-side" and "stacked" window arrangements that help with this but as soon another application covers these it take many mouse clicks and/or key combinations to display them all again.

Hey Microsoft! Please add a "bring group to front" context menu command to the taskbar! <-- this will probably fall on deaf ears so if there are any third party developers out there that can do this I would gladly pay for the application, could be your road to riches.

Hi,

Can someone help me with this as i really can't think of how to do it, a quick Google search hasn't helped either and the only other place i could think of that is as useful as Google is... Seven Forums

I would like a Batch or VBS file to do the following (or something that will at least do it)

I have 1 PC with 1 Monitor...
I have 2 browser windows running full screen...

I would like to open/display/bring them to front alternately automatically.
How can this be done?

Example in readable form, well i hope:

Code:
:Start
Bring to front
"browser window 1"
Pause=30seconds

Bring to front
"browser window 2"
Pause=30seconds
GOTO :Start

Regards,
JDobbsy1987

Answer:Batch/VBS File, 'Bring To Front' help

Unless they are different browsers, it could be impossible to program something that would be able to discern "window 1" and "window 2" across many different browsing sessions.

Can you explain more of why you'd like to do this so we can think of other ways to possibly address it?

You right click on the desktop go proerties then appearance then go to effects then go to clear type in the second drop down menu. (windows xp) I am still using my CRT monitor and i notice a difference in the text? Does this really change anything that much? should I leave it as clear type or standard? This is the second time I've gotten this bug, and it seems to occur roughly two weeks after a fresh install.

Long story short, I pin all of my favorite applications to the taskbar and when I click on a running program, I expect it to bring focus to that program (bring it to the front). Instead, it flashes yellow and the window that I want stays behind every other window. The only program that does not do this is Digsby for whatever reason. Basically, the only way to see an existing window is to minimize all of the windows in front of it and only clicking on the window itself will give it focus. That's partly a lie, because I've discovered that a series of clicks on the taskbar icon will do it, namely: right click, left click, right click, left click. I don't want to have to do four clicks when one normally works.

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit acquired through the MSDN program for students (Academic Alliance or something). I do know that I never had these issues in the beta with Ultimate edition.

Thanks.

Answer:Taskbar bug, doesn't bring programs to front.

I am also having this problem. I'm using Windows 7 Professional 32-bit and am having the same symptoms. Clicking a program on the taskbar doesn't bring it to the front, it just blinks yellow/orange. I have to Win-tab or minimize windows in front of the program to get to it. Any help on this would be most appreciated.

Hi,

I am working with a powerpont presentation where I have put a logo in the slide master, it needs to show on every page. So here is the problem. On some slides I have to insert pictures that cover up the portion of the logo that is saved on the master. However, the part of the picture that is covering up the logo is just dead white space, and I figure there is a way to make the logo always go to the front.

Let me know if anyone has any ideas or needs more clarification.

tend to go to people who already have some knowledge - you'll not find too many people prepared to pay you so you can learn about web design. In any event, you can teach yourself just as well - all it takes is hard work, plenty of practice, and a degree of design ability. If you don't have natural ability you can learn design basics by reading online tutorials - there are thousands of them out there, just run a search. In answer to your question about a date and time display - you can do this with Java scriptclick here and paste the code into your page exactly as it is written, then follow the instructions to call the function.New ideas? Well that's up to you. I suggest that rather than searching constantly for new gizmos you spend time getting to know more about the basics of good design.

I've unchecked everything except 4 items under System Properties/Advanced Settings/Visual Effects. Is there a Group Policy setting or some other way to lock down those Visual Effects settings so they do not change? In the course of installing various software and maybe by doing something I'm not aware of, these settings change on their own (for example: the animation settings which I've turned off, will suddenly be back on again). Going back and resetting them is easy, but I plan on giving this computer to someone who might not enjoy doing this.

Answer:Req: How to lock down Visual Effects

Hello darkrats, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Usually, the only other thing that will reset your visual effects settings back to default is when you apply any changes in the Ease of Access Center.

If you like, you could export the registry keys from OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to back up your visual effects settings as a .reg file. This way if they should get changed, you could just merge the .reg file to restore them.

Hope this helps,

How do I turn off visual effects?

I don?t like the way Win7 animates windows when maximizing and minimizing. I?ve know how to turn it off, but I want to turn it off permanently.

I?ve been to System->Advanced->Performance Options->Visual Effects and unchecked the corresponding option - "Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing". I?ve also unchecked ?Enable Aero Peek?.

This turns off the animation only for a while. Perhaps a day or two sometimes just a few hours. I was wondering if there was a registry hack to turn this off permanently.

Can any one help?
Jessica

Answer:How do I turn off visual effects?

Right after you set the options, try logging off, then log back on. That should flush the registry to disk. I don't know why it would forget settings, but it looks like that's what happens.

If that doesn't work, try adjusting the settings, then reboot right away.
If that doesn't work, I'd check Microsoft Knowledge Base to see if it's listed as broken.

Is it possible to make a .reg file to optimize my visual effects for best performance for all users that sign into one PC?

I want to do this because we have many people who sign into the PC via our Active Directory through the network. If I can get a .reg file that just applies this to all users that would be awesome!

Answer:Best Performance for Visual Effects .reg file??

Still haven't found anything on this guys... needing these ran on lower end computers.

Hi, I'm a long time reader, first time replyer!!

I was wondering if anyone knew how to make a single shortcut to toggle a given set of visual effects options. I'm thinking something analagous to the

Rundll32 dwmApi #102 / #104

shortcut that turns Aeroglass on / off, but instead of just toggling Aeroglass it could toggle a whole range of visual effects options. In practical terms, I'm looking for a single shortcut that would blast into full-blown visual mode and another that would blast into barebones visuals. Can this even be done with a shortcut, or would I need to make a batch file or something like that?

Thanks!

Hi. I'm learning Visual Basic (in 21 days!) from a nice, fat, hardcover book. To make my life difficult, I'm using the Visual Basic functionality within Excel, rather than working with Visual Basic by itself. (A few reasons - we don't have Visual Basic at work, but we do have Excel. I also want to use Visual Basic to put together more advanced applications with Excel.)

So, the first few sample programs worked just fine. Now I've hit a snag.

The sample program I'm working on has three radio buttons and three images. You select which one of the images you want to move around by clicking the appropriate radio button. You then click anywhere on the form and the image then moves to there.

OK. The first problem I had was with the MouseDown (mouse click) event. It isn't clear to me how to tie a MouseDown event to an Excel sheet.

So I looked for a workaround. I added an image 'object' behind the radio buttons and the images, and sent it to the back. It's basically working as a background. I could then associate a MouseDown event with this background image.

The program now works. I click somewhere on the background image, and the selected image moves there.

The problem now is that the background image 'receives' the focus when you click on it, bringing it to the foreground, obscuring everything else. Once the mouse pointer is moved off the background image, the image again reverts to the background, letting you see the three... Read more

Hi Pond,

I threw an example workbook together rather quickly, that will show you how to accomplish what you want in two ways. The first is a UserForm, and the second is in a sheet.

See if that does what you expect, and then you can let me know if you have any further questions. I'll be gone for the weekend, but I'll return on Monday!

I spent 3 days trying to figure my 100% disk usage out, literally trying everything I could find on Google to fix it. No luck.

I then noticed in Resource Monitor, the responsible process (svchost.exe wsappx), had Windows.Photo in its file path, which led me to think that desktop themes or something similar could be the culprit for the out of control process (which you'll see in my screenshots). I googled how to disable Visual Effects and boom, fixed the problem. Now, I haven't come across this solution yet, so I hope it will help someone.

Here is the spiking process (ignore the 0%, it spiked to 100% 5 seconds later - screwed up the screenshot). You can also see Windows.Photo in the file path.

On my work computer I cannot save visual effects - I like the animations in Win 7, but for some reason the OS is restoring the settings to defaults after I switch off the PC and power it on (during the current session, the settings are accepted). It doesn't happen with other features, e.g. custom startup background, or a theme.

Is there a way to save the new settings once and for all?

I had someone the other day that had the same issue. We were able to solve it by using OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to set the visual effects in the registry instead.

Hi all,
I know this is a silly post and I'm probably OCD when it comes to this, but the visual effects/transitions in Windows 10 seem to turn off automatically. That is, the animations when minimizing, resizing, or closing a window. I have to go to System settings/advanced system settings/advance, then change the performance settings each time for it to work. Anyone else noticing this?

Now the following list is what you can choose to set on or off in the visual effects section of the performance menu, but I've NO idea what each one does. Of course it says what it does but there's no explanation, just a sentence.

* Animate windows when minimising and maximising.
* Fade or slide menus into view.
* Fade or slide ToolTips into view.
* Fade out menus after clicking.
* Show shadows under menus.
* Show shadows under mouse pointer.
* Show translucent selection rectangle.
* Show window contents while dragging.
* Slide open combo boxes.
* Slide taskbar buttons.
* Smooth edges of screen fonts.
* Smooth-scroll list boxes.
* Use a background images for each folder type.
* Use common tasks in folders.
* Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop.
* Use visual styles on windows and buttons.

If somebody could tell me what each of these do, I'd appreciate it so that I can choose which ones I want on and which I want off... Thanks! :)

The problem came out of nowhere, I noticed my computer didn't animate when minimizing, opening, or closing a window. The "animate windows when minimizing and maximizing" option is enabled. When I restart my computer, it will still show that it is enabled when I bring up that window but it won't work unless I re-apply it. This has nothing to do with aero and my video card driver is up to date. I also noticed this after I recently installed new rams but I don't see how it could affect it. Any ideas on how to get it to stay working again? Thanks in advance!

Edit: It only happens on one user account for some reason. The other account has no problems with the animations at all.

Hi ,

I am writing here because I am desperate.
Something is stealing focus from active windows and returns me to desktop .
I have read dozens of forums in the web about this but it seems its strictly constrained to individual user problem rather than something in common .

I have tried
1) Executed Superantispyware , Malware Antibytes, Avira , Combofix . All came out clean. Cleared registries with Ccleaner also .

2) Opened a notepad and monitored Taskbar.exe . Nothing seems to obviously steal focus .

3) Uninstalled all toolbars except mtorrent and conduit engine. I am a firefox 5.0 user .

4) Minimized startup programs to a minimum . Problem remains .

5) Set Action User Control to a safe minimum , nothing (at least unrecognised ) seems to try to chanege my system settings .

6) Installed TweakUi ( it said it was win 7 combat6ible but i dont think so ) ,
didnt find anything on focus , so uninstalled .

If u require I can provide with a hijackthis or a ocmbofix report .
Unfortunately I cannot interpet correctly those logs.

I operate a legal copy of Windows 7 SP1 and the setup is only 1 month old .

Looking forward to your assistance ,
best regards.

Answer:Something is stealing focus from active windows

After uninstalling a few more plugins and apps , the problem seems to disappear for the moment ,
but , since it has done so in the past few days and reappeared after, I am not holding my breath .
Possible suspects are Easy Youtube Downloader plugin for firefox and Freemake Video plugin for firefox also . Currently monitoring these two apps .
Just letting you know , so I wont use up your valuable time for nothing .
If the problem appears again I might revive this post .
Hope I wont have to :)

So I got a new computer a few months ago, and it suffered hard drive failure in the first few months. I got that all sorted out and have been trying to set it up again with the new hard drive. After a few pitfalls with Norton and Constant Guard not installing themselves properly leading to Blue Screens, I got those to work and have been letting my computer update itself whenever ever since. HP Support Assistant was telling me to update the other day and I let it do its thing. Several command prompts would show up for a few seconds and I'd get some window saying that files were copying. All to fast for me to really see what was happening, so I figured it was normal and just let it happen.

I load up my laptop today and I've got this obnoxious problem where my windows will not stay focused at all. Every few seconds they'll go out of focus before coming back in again, it's nearly impossible to type which is why I'm stuck doing so on a mobile device. It honestly wouldn't surprise me if this new computer somehow got a virus or something while I was having trouble with Norton and Constant Guard. I don't browse bad sites or anything like that, and any downloads I did we're from what I figured were trustable sources.

Any suggestions? I'm running Windows 7 on an hp Probook 4530s, and this computer has more or less been a $750 blunder since I got it. My 6 year old Dell had problems, which I've fixed through help from here before, but the... Read more

Answer:Active Windows Losing Focus

Doesn't seem like I can edit a post through the mobile site, but I tried a system restore but the restore points had conveniently deleted themselves to the point where I can't go back to before HP Support Assistant (or something sinister dressed as it) did its potential dirty work. I've rebooted numerous times and haven't found anything really conclusive about this little active window problem I'm having. It might be a virus or a Trojan or whatever, but I'm not experiencing any redirects or pop ups. All windows seem to be doing this, even a highlighted, but not open, shortcut on my desktop will blink in and out of focus

Windows Update is doing a service pack update now, so maybe that'll fix it. Or maybe my updates and installations are corrupted like what happened with Norton and Constant Guard before.

Hi all,

I've been having a problem for a while, but my memory has been jarred a bit by all the Mozilla speak on this forum.

I use Microsoft Front Page to author a website or two. Sometimes I use the Dynamic HTML effects to draw attention to some texts or bulletins (for those of you who aren't familliar: Dynamic HTML effects cause the chosen text to fly, spiral, wipe, etc.).

The problem is that Netscape (or any Mozilla driven browser) does not recognize the effects. Not only does it not recognize the effects, but it does not display the text either! I've installed the Java 2 update and have upgraded Netscape time and time again, but I can't get it to work! The effects work on IE6, of course.

If you want to see what I mean, go to www.sayatnova.com and see. The top bulletin should come sliding in from the right. Instead, you see nothing.

Any ideas on what the problem might be? I'm sure it has to do with the war between Microsoft's VM and Sun's Java. Thanks

Say I'm on the internet (in IE7, Windows XP), I click a link (or right-click and open link in new window). Then I click back to the first window and continue reading. When the second page has opened (not even fully loaded), it becomes the active window, jumps to the front, grabs focus.

This doesn't happen all the time - I think it is dependent on just what is in that second window.

Similarly, when I start an application and then click back to my open webpage, when the app has loaded it becomes active. Again, this isn't the case with all software.
If I start the Crystal Reports software, it doesn't steal focus. However, if I start an existing Crystal file, it does.
If I start any of the MS Office programs, they don't steal focus. If I open an Excel file that contains macros (and displays the Disable / Enable macros options when started), then it does.

I have checked the Reg key: HKEY_CurrentUser > Control Panel > Desktop > ForegroundLockTimeout and the value is set to 200000 (decimal). The ForegroundFlashCount key is set to 2. And it's not a case of these things being reset by some 3rd party software.

So I'm guessing that the reg key doesn't extend to freshly opened items. I've messed about with these settings to see if I can fix the issue, but thus far it hasn't worked.
Oh, and I cannot install TweakUI on this machine, but I think the setting only changes that same reg key anyway.

So, is there any way to stop new... Read more

Answer:Focus grabbing / Active windows (beyond ForegroundLockTimeout)

While its opening, no, programs make calls for last loaded profiles or prompt for new instruction, multi-part modules load; same thing for web pages except if you can confugure it to always open in the background, it won't. I thought if you center clicked a link in IE, it would open in a new Tab and stay in the background. Try that if you haven't, a new window is not going to work unless you have the background option but a new tab should stay out of the way.

only thing i can think of are perhaps these new nvidia drivers 186.18 whql that I installed. I tried to uninstall them through control panel, remove programs uninstalled, and got blue screen on one of the nvidia looking dll's... Then the drivers never fully install after that, anyways long story short on that part, I did a system restore and back to square one again.

anyone have any ideas?

EDIT: Solved!
Short answer: This how you get it to stick with your normal user account(non admin). This way is different because it DOES NOT make you go through UAC and log in with your admin credentials. Thus the setting sticks to your local user account(non admin) when you log out and back in.

Seen this problem posted many times without a solution.  Maybe this is the place to find it? With either Windows 7 Pro 64b or Windows 10 Pro 64b, the computer repeatedly "seems to" change focus to some invisible window and stay there.  The obvious effect is that mouse clicks are not recognized, whether with the touchpad or with a wireless mouse.  Ctrl-Alt-Del => Cancel frees it up, at least momentarily, but sooner or later the same thing will happen.  Hoping someone here has done what I couldn't find elsewhere, discovered a solution.  Thanks for any help you can give me!

Question: Focus on Window

I have some workstations whose only function is to run this one application. I put a shortcut to the application in the Startup folder of the Start Menu, but everytime it starts up its window eventually loses focus. I know there's other apps and services running in the background but, how do I make it so that this application's window never loses focus during startup???

TIA

P.S. - They run WinXP Pro.

Question: Window focus

How do I achieve mouse-over brings a window into focus, but clicking a window doesn't raise it above the other windows? I've tried using TXMouse, which acheives what I want, but it breaks the middle-button to open a new tab shortcut in Firefox which is invaluable to me.

Question: Window Loses Focus

So I've started to have this REALLY annoying problem in the last day or so. What happens is I will be typing away, on a game, or something. The window I'm working on will suddenly lose focus and be inactive. This will then spread to every single window of every program I have open. I can't even click the desktop or start menu. I can Ctrl-Alt-Delete and start the task manager, which will let me start to click items again temporarily. I may be able to retain focus for a minute to 15, then I'll have to ctrl-alt-delete to get the task manager again. The keyboard does not seem to be affected. Any ideas? The problem first started when I plugged in an external hard drive that I am pretty sure is clean. KasperSky antivirus can't detect anything, and ChkDsk is clean as a whistle.

Answer:Window Loses Focus

Update: I have installed a new mouse, a Logitech G5 Laser Mouse. I uninstalled the old drivers and installed the latest SetPoint drivers. This does not seem to have fixed my problem. I suppose this should be upgraded from "getting" annoying to "is" annoying

Hello,

Have a problem that started about 2 weeks ago. Seems that every two to three minutes the top most window looses focus and the cursor moves out of sight. I've got to move the mouse to get the cursor display then click on the window I was working on to regain focus. It's a real pain in the ^&$&.

Does anyone have any idea what is causing this?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Recently I reinstalled XP Pro and Firefox2 on a new hard drive. I'm using the MX700 Duo. I have the My Home keyboard button set to open Firefox. When the browser window opens (Google is my home page), it loses focus. On my previous XP install I could hit the button and start typing in the Google search box, but now I have to click on the window.

I've Googled but I get a lot of useless links, and some deal with JavaScript window focus and such, which don't seem to pertain.

Any ideas?

Answer:Firefox window focus

Sorry if I'm being an idiot here but when you say looses focus do you mean the screen is blurry, or the cursor is not in the Google search box?

Just a little confused...

Anyone know a way to force Windows to maintain focus on an app? I tried DeskPins which lets you pin an app to top level but it can still lose focus. I want the app to never lose focus if possible.

You don't want the app to lose focus? So you want it to take over the who system? What exactly are you trying to achieve?

I just got a new computer and it has Windows 7. Windows 7 is driving me nuts because the top-most window will not automatically get focus. For example, say I have Windows-Explorer and Notepad open. I have Notepad focused and am working in it. I then close Notepad, which leaves Windows-Explorer as the only open window on the desktop. Yet the Windows-Explorer window will not automaticlaly get focus. Instead it is "greyed" out and the only way I can focus it is to click on the window. This is so ANNOYING.

Also, when I assign a keyboard shortcut (e.g., to open Internet Explorer if I assign Ctrl+Alt+I), it will never open with focus. It will open the app but it will be "greyed out" and it will not get focus until I click on it.

This never happened on Windows XP. On XP the top-most window would always get focus if there was no window "above it" or if the window "above it" was closed.

Is there any way to get Windows 7 to behave like Windows XP with windows getting focus?

Answer:how do I get the top-most window to always grab focus?

When you close a program, focus returns to wherever it was before you focussed on the program you just closed. However, the problem here is if you have Explorer open, for example, open Notepad with the Start menu, then close Notepad, focus returns to the Start menu / taskbar because that's where it was last.

There's an option in the Ease of Access settings to have it focus on whatever the mouse is hovering over, if that helps - go to Ease of Access > Make the mouse easier to use, then check 'Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse'.

Strange thing has been happening since, I believe last Patch Tuesday (6/09). Context menus and message boxes don't stay "focused" (on top) if I move the cursor out of the window. Can hover/click on taskbar icon to get back on screen, but as soon as I move the cursor, it's gone! Doesn't happen with snapped windows or app windows, just context menus and message boxes and the like. It's happening on Win 10 and my dual boot 8.1. Also, on my laptop 8.1. Only thing in common, they all had Flash Player update. Anybody else getting this? Any clues?

Okay, this may seem strange but basically about ever 3-5 minutes no matter if im in a full screen app or browsing the net I loose focus to that window. If I am in a full screen app it goes to the desktop. When I am browsing the net and it losses focus I can still see the screen but am no longer able to scroll using wheel mouse or when Im typing it will just stop when it goes out of focus. Can anyone [email protected]#

Answer:Losing focus on window

Run a good spyware and virus scan. Sounds like there is a program running in the background that is accessing itself every few minutes and stealing focus. It could, of course, also be a ligitamate program that you have running. If something is checking for updates constantly for instance. run "msconfig" and disable any not needed startup programs and see if that stops it.

Another annoying issue.

I've been dealing with this for awhile. To the best of my knowledge, it started after I finally updated from Firefox v15.xx to the current version.

The problem:

I will be on webpage/forum, select a link (on the same forum) and choose open in a new window. The new window will open and load. And then, quite often but not all the time, Firefox will switch from the newly opened window back to the original window. It should stay on the new window (and is what I want it to do). I then have to select the new window and that window will then stay in focus.

Is there a setting or fix for this behavior?

Answer:Firefox window focus

If the behaviour is random/variable as you suggest, perhaps creating a new Firefox profile and importing your data into it would be a good move? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...ores-user-data
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...refox-profiles

Pale Moon Commander is a useful add-on configurator but not all settings exist in Firefox, it's primarily for Pale Moon: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fir...oon-commander/

As you seem reluctant to upgrade FF sometimes, perhaps you should try out Pale Moon anyway, it uses a different profile, your FF settings/data can be migrated easily: The Pale Moon Project homepage

Historically, Windows has changed the color of the title bar to indicate which window has the focus. Just upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7, and now I can't tell what window has the focus... yes, if I look really hard, I can see the 1 pixel of accent color around the window that has the focus, but that isn't enough on a high-res screen. What else can I do to distinguish the window that has the focus?

Answer:Which window has the keyboard focus?

I too have the same problem.

I tried using Winaero Tweaker to solve the problem with colored title bars. That just caused another problem as Winaero was preventing newly opened Windows from taking focus, so I am back to square one.

To me, a lot of the Windows 10 user interface changes seem to be change for the sake of change and being seen to be doing something. Whether any real improvement has resulted is debatable.

I have been seeing some of our users turn off UAC.
The complaint is that they double click a program and can do nothing. Disabling the UAC fixes this.
The actual problem is that the UAC comes up minimized. It's flashing as a program icon. But they don't see it.

Is there a way to force Win 7 UAC to always be on top and get focus?
This happens every time our program is run on some machines.

Answer:Force Uac To Be Focus Window In Win 7

DOA in my opinion i hate the UAC it is about as bad as a anti virus scanner.

Probably the two things i hate out of the windows OS is the UAC and the administrator option. These two are the worst add on's microsoft has put into a window.

Sure it might be good for some but not for people like me who use a lot of programs in a day.

It should be made as a install option to turn them on or off.
