DivX uninstallation and side-by-side configuration errors

Question: DivX uninstallation and side-by-side configuration errors

Hi,
Pretty much the problems I'm experiancing are all video streaming related. I cannot stream most videos off the internet, i always just get a blank loading screen saying "waiting for video" and sometimes the websites suggest I download Divx plus Web player.

I have downloaded DivX web player, and have the latest updates, but everytime I try to run the actual DivX Plus player from my start menu, I get an error message saying "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect"

So naturally I tried to uninstal DivX from my computer so I could reinstal it to have it work, but when I go into my control panel and use the add/remove programs, when I click uninstall nothing comes up. I click it, the windows permission thing comes up and I click Yes, then nothing else comes up, no interface that will allow me to uninstall it.

So I guess what im asking is either a) how can I delete it without using add/remove utility, or how to fix that and/or b) How do i uninstal DivX and reinstal it to have it work

Preferred Solution: DivX uninstallation and side-by-side configuration errors

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: DivX uninstallation and side-by-side configuration errors

You might try an actual player such as this free one called RealPlayer here as I only get my "codecs" from DivX and do not use or have not used their "Player" I cannot offer any reason why what your trying is not working. Hope this helps

Hi, I'm kind of at my wits end at this point. I don't know if my problems are fixable, or if I just need to get a new computer.

It started with just a few programs on my computer that had side by side configuration errors. I was advised to uninstall and reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, but some would not reinstall correctly.

Several of the shortcuts on my computer are no longer working.

I have an HP Pavilion g7 running windows 7. I was using Firefox as a browser, but now I can't get adobe flash player to run on it at all. See posts here:

and here:

So I've had to use Chrome. Now, more and more programs won't open and are causing Windows to crash "Windows Explorer has stopped working." I ran a disk check and no errors were found. On the reboot I had and Event10 WMI error, and was able to find a fix through Microsoft.

So recently, I received a blue screen of death. The error was something along the lines of:
page_fault_in_nonpaged_area

When it restarted, windows advised me to perform a system file check. So I left my computer for a bit, and when I came back it was already at the logon screen. However, when I logged on and started firefox, first thing I noticed was that all my bookmarks and some extensions had been wiped.
I then tried to start Microsoft Word but I received the following error:

"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect";

I receive that error for most of my other programs.

When I tried to run event viewer, it says:

"MMC could not create the snap-in"

Please help. Is it possible to restore my applications without reinstalling them all?

Hey Guys,
I have a problem. Last night, i was up all night, using my pc. I had quite a few tabs open (using chrome), and every once in a while, the cpu had a lot of Work to do, so the pc would respond more slow. During one of these slows, something different happened. Quite a lot of icons just turned into one of the old school Windows icons, most (if not all) of them being .exe files. I wanted to fix all of this, so I used Bullguard, and after that i wanted to use CCleaner. CCleaner didn't Work. Neither did the other programs. They gave me an error in the lines of:

"This version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) verion of the program."

Also, whenever i shut down my computer, or boot it up, an error pops up from LogonUI.exe:

"Error: C:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\windows live\wlidcredprov.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error"

I figured out how to fix this part. I simply installed Windows Live Essentials.

And when I open Google Chrome, it just gives me another error. It says that the side by side configuration is incorrect.
I tried uninstalling MyWinlocker but, it is still running in the system tray. I tried looking for a process called mwl.exe, but I can't find it.

Also, whenever the computer boots up, I am also greeted with a certain window. It's the window th... Read more

After a BSOD, I restored to the latest configuration that allowed me to boot. Since then, virtually no applications will start, all giving me the side-by-side configuration errors. Uninstall fails. In fact, most programs are no longer even listed. The Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package also fails to start.

I found several posts around the web that suggested running SFC /scannow, which I did. It found errors, but was unable to fix them. It referred me to the CBS.log which it created. I have no idea what any of it means, so I'm including it.

Hi, I am not very familiar with Vista due to loathing. But I have to use it on a friend's system.

I have a freeware game which will run on either XP or Vista fine. (Dwarf Fortress if you must know the app.) The best way to get your saved game to another system is to just zip up its whole directory and flashdrive it to the next PC. XP thinks this is fine. When I take the game FROM a Vista system to my XP system, it works fine. Good Evening to you friendly Pro's out there.

Over the past 4 months my PC has started to get a large amount of Blue Screen crashes. This was followed by disk checks upon reboot. Then a few programs would not launch due to their side by side configuration being incorrect. As the days went on this bled into almost all of my software / programs.

I cannot open any programs whatsoever aside from calculator / notepad / IE (which is stuck at IE 9 so I can't load many websites properly if at all) and cannot update any existing programs. Basically everything I try to open has a side by side configuration error.

I've gone through a few Youtube video tutorials and followed them step by step with no fix. I'm at a point where I'm looking to backup all of my media to the cloud and reformat. I'd rather not do that however if possible but I have no idea how else to resolve this. Web searches don't really bring up too many helpful instructions either. MS.com has other people who have had the issue but the instructions are eitehr confusing or don't seem to match what I'm going through.

Before I go the backup / reformat route is there any suggestions / thoughts on how to resolve this and stop this error from occurring?

Thanks in advance!

- C

When trying to open a number of programmes including Microsoft Works Word processor is "application cannot be opened as side by side configuration is incorrect"

How do I tackle this please!

Answer:Error message: "application cannot be opened as side by side configuration is incorrect"

Hi

To be honest I never meet such problem with the operating system but firstly I would recommend trying to repair the OS.

Boot up the notebook and press F8. Then choose option called Repair the Computer.
Now you will see a some options. Here I would recommend choosing the first option called: Startup Repair.
This option automatically fixes problems that are preventing Windows from starting.
But I?m not quite sure if this is good enough to fix your issue with the system.

If this does not help I would recommend reinstalling this Microsoft Works package.

First post...

I am coming to you as a last resort. I built my own PC and installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit OEM edition. Has been working fine for ~2 years.
Now every time I attempt to open a program I get the error "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail".

The only progam that is barely working is IE 64 bit edition. I cannot download or run any files.

Microsoft wants 59$ to speak to a technical support representative(What a joke, multibillion dollar company wants extra $ for tech support??...).

Doing a ton of research I have tried various things to remedy this with no avail. System restore did not work. Doing a sfc /scannow in command prompt does not work, it does not even run. Wasted 3 hours of my life doing a thorough checkdisk as well.

The error in the event log is as follows...
Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.windows.c..-controls.resources_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.6001.18000_en-us_72e6f33f34dfabb9.manifest" on line 18. Invalid Xml syntax.

So the problem has to do with this manifest file? I really am clueless as to my next move. I can not download and run anything at all.... Can I do a Vista repair installation with my OEM version?

Should I try and get my hands on a cheap upgrade version of Windows 7?

So, I had the same problem as above. I had developed a dll using Qt that worked fine on my machine but would not register on another. The familiar "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect..." appears when I ran the depencency walker on the dll.

So this was the solution that worked for me, which may help some others see what's going wrong here:

Within my dll the manifest emedded read:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>
<assembly xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1" manifestVersion="1.0">
<dependency>
<dependentAssembly>
<assemblyIdentity type="win32" name="Microsoft.VC80.DebugCRT" version="8.0.50608.0" processorArchitecture="x86" publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b"></assemblyIdentity>
</dependentAssembly>
</dependency>
</assembly>

It seemed that the assembly definition was not found upon my client computer. So then, from within my original computer's 'Windows\WinSxS' directory, I copied the 'x86_Microsoft.VC80.DebugCRT_1f...' directory and it's associated files within the 'Policies' and 'Manifests' directories onto the client computer. Once copied, the dll registrered fine.

Hope this helps...

First of all, I've gotten this on at least 3 different programs. Everyone who's written about this seems to think it's related to their specific program...it's not! Secondly, what I find here in the forum on the subject tells me there has been no solution...also am unable to find any on the 'net'. I think it acts like a virus and is spreading...

What's up with this??? Does anyone know...? It has kept me from opening iTunes so I can't work with my iPad anymore. Certainly there must be someone knowledgeable enough to know what this is and what to do about it...right?:

Ok so I am going to go straight into the good stuff.

Essentially I launch Dragon Age and get an error about side by side configuration. I have already done an enormous amount of research on this subject and have found that the problem is usually attributed to the C++ Redistributable from Microsoft.

I tried to remedy this problem 3 different ways (manually working from a system restore point where Dragon Age & Bioshock 2 did not work, but Mass Effect 2, Call of Duty MW2, and the Original Bioshock were still fully functional) this system restore point had the Microsoft 2008 C++ Redistributable installed, and again the games I listed in parenthesis were working fine.

I first uninstalled the 2008 Redistributable and downloaded and installed the 2005 Redistributable, restarted the computer (even though it did not prompt me) and ran into a massive error. Essentially, this install made every game unplayable (all of those I listed above).

Next, I uninstalled the 2005 Redistributable and reinstalled the 2008 without a restart, and tried to launch every game listed above. Of course, I was back to square one, with Dragon Age and Bioshock 2 still giving me the side by side configuration error.

Lastly I tried launching each game through the program 'depends.exe' (using the .exe) to see exactly which dependencies each game required. Of course, both Dragon Age and Bioshock 2 gave me the side by side configuration, telling me that a MSVCP80.dll file could not be found with... Read more

I have seen this before. Do you have AVG installed? AVG and the C++ redistributable seem to conflict. Uninstalling and reinstalling both fixed it.

Windows 7, on Toshiba Laptop, all of the recent windows updates have been installed.
I was having issues running the new zynga game on facebook, the ville. I assumed that it was a resource hog and didn?t like the laptop, and it was possible that I didn?t have the most recent installment of Adobe flash, so I upgraded that as well. It still wouldn?t run. So I decided to clean up the hard drive.
I used control panel to uninstall a game that the kids no longer play because it?s now obsolete. I also uninstalled Quickbooks (it wasn?t just quickbooks, it was a bunch of crapware that was installed on the laptop when we purchased it, but since we don?t use quickbook I figured we could get rid of it.) the only reason I bother stating all of this is because I believe in full disclosure. You never know which action caused the issue so it?s best to tell it all. Sorry for the ramble.
I have been noticing that the machine was running slower lately, so that is why I decided to de-clutter the hard drive.
After doing this and rebooting I found that I was unable to run Rockmelt, it came up with the following:

On quite a few different programs, i'm getting the error message:

"The application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail"

I've read so many forums online where people have had a similar issue, but nothing has been helpful. The most common suggestion is related to VisualC++ but when i installed it, I got the same error! I tried running it without saving, then I saved it and tried running it, again the same error.

I've opened the event viewer, theres quite a few 'sidebyside' error messages, but I dont know what to do with any of that information. The first side by side error is this one:

Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls,language="*",processorArchitecture="X86",publicKeyToken="6595b64144ccf1df",type="win32",version="6.0.0.0"
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Silverlight\4.0.50524.0\Silverlight.Configuration.exe

I havn't a clue how it started, my computer was fine yesterday, I opened it today to these errors, I tried rebooting but it didnt help.

If any more information is needed, I'll provide what I can.
Thanks

I have extensively searched these forums for a solution to my problem but can't find it. I have found some similar problems, but none exactly the same, here is what happened:

I have a Windows7 computer running just fine. I pulled the hard drive out of my old computer and had installed it in the new one and it seems fine. I can access both drives and i all my files are there. The problem i am having is that i can't open any files from my old hard drive if the program they need to open is also on that old hard drive.

For example, my old hard drive has AutoCAD on it, my new hard drive doesn't. When i click on AutoCad i get the annoying "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect" message. This happens with lots of programs, not just AutoCAD. I have MS Office on the old hard drive but when I try to open a word or excel file it won't open. It's like the computer is trying to open files from my old hard drive with applications that are on my new drive. This is a problem because i cant afford to buy 2 copies of autoCAD and 2 copies of MS Office and 2 copies of every program i have.

I feel like there is a simple fix for this but i can't figure this one out.
Thank you for help!!!!

Hello George!

Well done on creating a new thread. Thanks for that!

Well, nothing wrong in the SFC log. That has got to be good - as long as we get a lead from one of the other logs!

Thanks for continuing on. I am afraid that I can do nothing until I get those other logs, as that SFC logs showed nothing wrong.

Again, thank you, and the very best of luck!

Hello and thank you in advance for your help, I am in desperate need!

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure when this problem started as I haven't been on much the last week or so, but I've tried all the trouble shooting I could find but still cannot manage to fix this problem.

When I try to open Word or Excel I get an error message:
"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."

Not totally sure what that means, but I have ran an administrative command prompt of sfc/scannow, and all my bad files are fixed (at least that's what it tells me when I try to run it again)

I also read tips where it tells you to go to the Event Viewer to get more details on the side-by-side problem. Well this seems to be having a problem, too. I get an error message saying:
"MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have been installed correctly.
Name: Event Viewer
CLSID: FX:{b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-714cbb7cb510}"

I did just get rid of the Scour redirect virus, and I'm 99% sure this was happening while I had that; not sure if it's related, but when I scan (and am doing another just to check) I come up clean.

Thanks again for your help!

The problem started today. None of my microsoft office programmes open up - Word, Excel etc. The suite has been istalled on my computer for the last year and have had no problems. However, yesterday when a update for my sony reader failed to complete I had to 'end task' the sony update - could this have corrupted something? I've removed the sony software from the computer but still nothing works. Everytime I click on the word/excel etc icons to open up the applications I get this message: This file does no have a programme associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations panel.

So I accessed the control panel and looked over all these applications and the extensions. All extensions like .doc etc have the correct default programme - e.g. .doc is defaulted to Word. But the problem is that I can't even open up the Word application itself.

I uninstalled the microsoft office 2007 suite through control panel, rebooted the computer and reinstalled. And then I tried the following:-

When I double click on the Word icon on the desktop to open it that way, I get the message: This application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.

- I did check out the event log and found this message:

MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap-in might not have installed correctly.

If you Google the last error message and the CLSID of {b05566ad-fe9c-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510} you will find lots of people with the same problem, but they don't all appear to have been "fixed" the same way.
Some involve a DLL file and others seem to implicate AVG.

Good Morning,
I have three identical machines all running Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2. All three have Office Home and Student 2010 installed. On one machine I have to keep uninstalling and reinstalling Office because I get the side by side configuration error on a random and recurring basis. Is there a permanent fix for this? I have the free upgrade for Windows 7 Home Premium for all three machines but have not used them because I am generally happy with Vista. Would upgrading to Win7 possibly help?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello,

I've really been having a lot of trouble with .exe files downloaded from the internet (i.e. program installers and the like). When trying to run any .exe installer an error message comes up that says:

Quote:
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail

This seems to happen with ALL downloaded .exe installers (including Firefox installer, GameStop's app installer, game demo installers, etc).

I'm really stuck for what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Also, I cannot read any PDF files in Chrome or Firefox (says "Object label badly formatted"). Any help with this would be appreciated also (Cannot download new version of Adobe Reader anyway).

This is kind of a pain. I can't find anyone out there except some C++ programmers that really talk about this problem. I have Vista Ultimate, 2 gigs of ram, 2 video cards in SLI, 2.4ghz X2 processor. All of my games and programs work, with the exception of BioShock, and now my windows update. I downloaded the demo yesterday from Steam, and got this messege

the application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more details

I thought this was a problem with the Steam download, so I went ahead and purchased the full game of BioShock. Got the same messege. I am really at my wits end. I have been at this since 10am and have gone nowhere... Thank you in advance.

Hi

I cant remeber if i did anything out of the ordinary when it started, but some time ago(some time ago becouse i havn't had time to fix it) when i started my Windows 7 64bit ASUS laptop every time i opened an .exe file, it said side-by-side configuration incorrect. Later i found out it only happened to x86 programs. Don't know if there is an connection, but windows explorer wasn't working either at all after the same boot, but i managed to get it working again by disabling two shell extensions. (one preinstalled from ASUS, and one named XPClient.FileSystemBrowser.BackupContextMenuExtension.BackupContextMenuExtension)

I've seen some saying to reinstall microsoft visual c++, but as it isn't any 64bit installer, so its impossible at the moment.

(I already posted this in the general discussion, but i think it was the wrong forum, so i reposted it here. Is it possible to delete the previous thread?)

Any suggestions?
Thanks

Please note the comment above about loosing stored folders & messages.

HI all,

Well my low post count is going to get a bit bigger.

On my desktop this morning I received this error,

The application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect.....
Spent lots of time googleing and have done disc checks, start-up repair sfc /checknow, (or something like that as that was this morning), and all came up ok.

Next coarse of action looks like un-install and re-install of the .net framework and the Visual C++. Now that seems like a good idea but same error is coming up when trying to run the installers as there .exe..

Only managed to get files of the net by laptop.
Looks like repair install might be next

Any advise on how to get the .exe files running would be great. As it seems Im going nowhere till then.

Thanks
Timon

Answer:Side by side configuration incorrect...? Error stopping 95% of .exe

*Edit*

I had wondered if it could have been a bit of nasty software, as was opening up some links to some screen shots of TPB and had a few more pop ups than I was happy with... closed them all of cause and didn't end up with anything downloaded that I was aware of. Only bring this up as this error seems to be linked with software install problems too.

Thanks

Hello all,

Im sorry in advance if this is the wrong forum to post, but i think this problem has nothing to do with my windows version.
Im running windows 8 pro 64bit (updated from win7 pro), leggal install. Laptop is hp elitebook 8560w.

All started with a sudden restart (this happens usually due to some overheating problems of my laptop. Anyway, im used to it. When pc restarted i tried to run chrome. It poped up an error msg like the one in img. Thought its something with chrome. After that i tried opera, same thing happened. Problem is this happens for ALL .exe files, i cannot even start from control panel "Uninstall a program" or regedit. Only some apps run like paint, task manager, disk management and some of win8 useless apps like maps. I cannot enter safe mode either. (its shift+f8, right?)

Really dunno what to do, my hands are tight.
Just a note, i have loads of programs install, (mainly proffesional ones), like microsoft c++ 2008 and ms sql server.

Any help would be usefull.

p.s. sorry for my english

Thanks in advance

Hey guys im having a problem with Windows Live Messenger.

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "" on line . A component version required by the application conflicts with another component version already active. Conflicting components are:. Component 1: C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.4148_none_5090ab56bcba71c2.manifest. This is what is displayed in my Event Viewer and i have no idea to fix it. Any help would be greately appreciated.

Answer:Windows Live Side-by-Side Configuration Error

Hello Andrew!

Welcome to the Vista Forums! I hope you enjoy your time here! Thanks for creating a new thread!

This error isn't the easiest to fix, but it also shouldn't be impossible.

Basically, although Windows can store two different version of a component, it cannot actually run two different versions at the same time.

The main available versions for that component are:

Code:
file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/Manifests/x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.21022.8_none_bcb86ed6ac711f91.manifest

file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/Manifests/x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.1_none_e163563597edeada.manifest

file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/Manifests/x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.4148_none_5090ab56bcba71c2.manifest

file:///C:/Windows/winsxs/Manifests/x86_microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.4974_none_50940634bcb759cb.manifest
As you can see, neither of the conflicting components is using the very latest file version. Now, what to do about it!

Windows Live is a Microsoft product. It is unusual for a Microsoft Product to have this sort of old file versioning issue, as long as it is up to date.

Can you please download a new copy of Windows Live Messenger from here: Windows Live Messenger 2011 - Instant messaging (IM), video chat

and install all of your Windows Updates.

If this doesn't fix it, we can look at more technical fixes, but hopefully we won't have to go there.

Thanks again, and the very best of luck,

Richard

First of all, I've gotten this on at least 3 different programs. Everyone who's written about this seems to think it's related to their specific program...it's not! Secondly, what I find here in the forum on the subject tells me there has been no solution...also am unable to find any on the 'net'. I think it acts like a virus and is spreading...

What's up with this??? Does anyone know...? It has kept me from opening iTunes so I can't work with my iPad anymore. Certainly there must be someone knowledgeable enough to know what this is and what to do about it...right?:

Hi everyone,

I am really new and not technically savvy like most of you seem to be!

I actually tried upgrading my iphone and that lead to having to upgrade itunes and that returned a side by side configuration error which I have spent hours trying to google and resolve - with no success. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated! I'm not sure what info you need or even where to start anymore. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Side by side configuration error when trying to install itunes

Hello megang,

My daughter's name is Megan Grace (MeganG) - you're not her are you?

Try running the System File Checker (SFC) - follow Option 2 of this SevenForums tutorial and attach your results (see option three to "shrink" the results) when you next post. You might have to run SFC a few times to completely resolve the SxS issues.

I have problem running any executable file, including opening zip files.

I have uninstall Norton Internet Security came with the Lenovo laptop, and install Avast free antivirus, everything fine after installation. But today when I start the laptop, all executable files cannot start, such as IE, Adobe, MS office, anything with .exe, and .zip. Error message is:

"The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more details."

I google a bit, one suggestion is to re-install the Visual C++ re-distribution, but the exe file cannot run, therefore re-installing is impossible.

There is another suggestion to reset the default file association for exe, tried that but no difference.

Couldn't find any other instance the same, look like my problem is more serious than other. Anyone has a suggestion?

Thanks.
Ken

Well, I get the message

when I try to open nearly every program.

programs that installed with windows 7 a long time ago, seem to run fine (winlogon.exe and eveyrthing needed to login)
also, paint, wordpad, notepad, winrar and ventrilo work.

programs that do not work are
all browsers - IE8, chrome, and firefox, seemingly all games, and well everything that I did not mention above.
This include downloaded exes, and the windows installer service.
PS. I was able to get internet working on the 64 bit version, i think all the programs that work are 64 bit exes

I checked the event log and here is what is shown (same file every time)

Something that I will try when I get home is using the file from my desktop, but I have no confidence that that will work.

I cant system restore
I believe this happened while my laptop was going into sleep mode and lost power

I am currently pursing a way to reinstall all my c++ and .net packages without exes in another thread

This problem appears after the Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3198586) update.

After the update, several applications will not run - the error stating "its side-by-side configuration is incorrect" Deleting the update resolves the problem, but I can't seem to block the update.

Hi,

When I try to run my DivX plus player I get the following error message:

"Missing divxmain DLL:

C:\Program Files (x86)\DivX\DivX Plus Player\DivX Plus Player.dll

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more details."

I have searched through other posts to try to find a solution to this but they all seem very specific to each problem and I don't want to do anything crazy that will mess things up even worse.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Answer:missing dll, side by side configuration is incorrect

Hello Adam and welcome to the forums

Side by side (also known as SxS) errors are extremely difficult to fix as it's very hard to trace the root of the problem. A good friend of mine has a wonderful post on SxS errors, so follow his instructions:

side by side configuration

Then post back here with the results

Answer:Error - side by side configuration as incorrect.

Hello, archz3.

Please try the following:

1. Open your start menu.
2. Search %temp%, and press enter.
3. Delete the files in the temp folder.
4. Restart your computer.
5. Re install Audacity.

Also, cleaning out your %temp% folder every 2-3 days is good, it removes files that you don't need, freeing up some space on your harddrive.

OK, well this started today, probably something I installed idk.

Whenever I try to open program I get the error. side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application log for
more details.
To be more specific, it's anything that was not already open at the time this started.
So, mozilla, and some other random programs are no problem, but for example, these programs would not open.
winrar
system restore
regedit
event viewer
dxdiag
And even I tried to plug something in, I got an error about device detection

So, ok, no idea what the problem is, no specific solution found online, I resorted to safe mode.
I restarted, and I couldnt log on, I'm assuming because of winlogon.exe or whatever program windows uses to log me in.
OK, so now I cannot even get to the operating system
I decided to check out the windows repair menu.
Startup repair found no problems, ok, so I hate doing this but I decided to system restore to last week using the repiar menu.
Restore completed!
I still cannot log in though, it did not seem to help.

I'm am now running on my backup windows xp OS, and am unable to get into windows 7 pro x64

If there is anything I can do to fix this, please let me know.
So the most I can change is anything from the repair menu, and I can manage files from this OS.

Hello,

I've been working on a computer that is having this error with Microsoft Word 2010, Excel 2010 and Quicken (there may be others as well).

Thus far I have tried the following to no avail: System Restore to before the problem occured, SFC, sxstrace, .net reinstalls, Visual C++ reinstalls. I attempted to run the System Update Readiness tool but it just hung halfway 5 times and I left it open for over an hour each time (no error messages produced from this). I have also tried reinstalling quicken and office without successfully fixing the problem.

I have attached the applicable logs.

I would highly prefer not to reset to factory settings or reinstall because this client has a lot of propriatery business software that will be difficult to procure new install licenses for.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Side By Side Configuration - Logs inside

From what I can find, the problem occurs because the flavor of the C++ redistributable required by the affected application is not installed. For instance, some software requires 2003 and some requires 2005. The best way to find out is to reinstall the software since the installation program will normally install the C++ redistributable that is required.

So here is the problem I am currently having. I am trying to find another way to wipe our hard drives that is a much faster, easier way. Right now, all drives are encrypted with Sophos Safeguard 5.50. Sophos offers a utility, BEInvVol.exe (SafeGuard Enterprise: How to decomission a volume-based encrypted disk.) that deletes the encryption keys off of the drive. Since these keys are not backed up, if they are deleted, the information on the drive can never be recovered. Essentially, it is as good as wiping the drive. Only it'll work much faster than using a wipe utility.

Now, when I boot into our WinPE 2.0 disk, and I try to run BEInvVol.exe, I get this error "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail." I've done a lot of searching around, and have decyphered this cryptic message: I am missing certain libraries that this program needs to run. Specifically, when looking at the exe's hex code, and when running the program using sxstrace, I see I need the library for "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)" which can be found at Download Details - Microsoft Download Center - Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) Now, here it the problem: I am running WinPE. I can't run this installer in that environment. When I try and run vcredist_x86.exe (the installer for C++ 2005 SP1) after WinPE 2.0 has booted up, I get this ... Read more

Answer:Side-by-side configuration is incorrect - From WinPE 2.0

Hello, and welcome to the Vista Forums!

Your tactical friending worked! I didn't see this thread before now! Really sorry for the delay!

VC++ 2005 SP1 contains 96 files.

Looking through their dependencies, there isn't actually anything too non-core. All of the dependancies may actually already exist on WinPE 3.1.

I shall see if I can get this to work on WinPE 2.0 and 3.1. I can't guarantee success, but I will give it my best shot.

I know you want this quickly, but the best way will be to mod the actual disk prior to running it.

I shall see if I make any headway, and report back in a day or two.

Thanks for giving a detailed post It really is very helpful!

Hello,
I have always lurked around the site,
but this is my first ever post for help
=)

My problem is this:
I am running Windows Vista 64 bit on an ASUS laptop and, after some "experimenting" with binding EXE's on XP and moving them over to Vista,
I started receiving the dreaded error message "This program has failed to start because it's side by side configuration is incorrect". Now, I'm no noob when it comes to computers...
But I have tried everything I can think of to resolve this problem.
THe most common solution I have found is to install the Visual C++ Redistributable, thing is...
When I run the installation EXE, the same error appears.
I have attempted running in safe mode, system restore, and all the usual options, and every thread with this same problem is often ignored, therefore I have not been able to find a solution.

Can ANYONE here please help me?
My father needs this laptop for his work...
and it has been out of commission for almost a week now,
so any help short of a repair installation would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Answer:Side by Side configuration error- on every program!

Hmm, so as I was spending my night last night trying to fix it...
I realized that I am able to install the 32 bit Redistributable,
but it makes no difference...

This is my first post. Runnng Vista 32 bit along with the free version of Avast!. When attempting to open a pdf file - I get the error message "that the application failed to start because its side by side conifiguration is incorrect. See application event log for more detail". Well even if I could find that application log, I do not know what I would be looking for. I did attempt to repair the Adobe reader and finally uninstalled it. Any thoughts? I will add that I ran across an Avast Forum comment on a similiar issue that said to reinstall C++ 2008 for the 32 bit due to the fact that sometimes the Avast!5 installer does not always correctly install the C++ correctly. Sounds good, but I hate to take a chance that could make things worse.

Hello,I have always lurked around the site, but this is my first ever post for help=)My problem is this:I am running Windows Vista 64 bit on an ASUS laptop and, after some "experimenting" with binding EXE's on XP and moving them over to Vista,I started receiving the dreaded error message "This program has failed to start because it's side by side configuration is incorrect". Now, I'm no noob when it comes to computers...But I have tried everything I can think of to resolve this problem.THe most common solution I have found is to install the Visual C++ Redistributable, thing is...When I run the installation EXE, the same error appears.I have attempted running in safe mode, system restore, and all the usual options, and every thread with this same problem is often ignored, therefore I have not been able to find a solution. Can ANYONE here please help me?My father needs this laptop for his work...and it has been out of commission for almost a week now,so any help short of a repair installation would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Okay, so my computer (Toshiba Satellite M305-S4848) was working perfectly fine this morning, then it died because the charger fell out. When I tried to turn it back on, it said that Windows could not start up & took me to the start up repair screen. Apparently, it tried to repair itself & let me start my computer up, but now, whenever I try to open ANY program, it has that side-by-side configuration error. When I tried searching for a solution, other forums said to open a command prompt and type in sfc /scannow which I did & it gave me the results, but now IDK what to do...someone please help!!!

Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 16.0 GB memory, 64-bit operating system

(Update doesn't seem to affect my Dell XPS 14 laptop)

How do I fix this issue?

Answer:Side by side configuration error in Vista 32 bit

If AVG won't install (though you didn't mention why), it may be because you are infected.

Read the sticky and post a log in the Malware forum. After cleaning, you can then deal with other problems.

Hello,

I've searched so many times on the internet about this I've lost count. I have been on every website possible and I still can't find a solution. Everytime I click on my Samsung New PC Studio or my AVG software, I keep getting this message: "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application log for more detail". I've tried numerous things, including going on Command Prompt, System Restore and I've tried downloading various packages but I still cannot find a solution to this problem. I've been trying to solve this all day but I've had no luck.

Please help,

Answer:Window 7: side by side configuration is incorrect

Perform a check disk:

Use the steps below:
Open Computer by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Computer.
Right-click the drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.
Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check now. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will report problems but not fix them.
To perform a thorough check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the drive itself, and it can take much longer to complete.
To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
Click Start.

Depending on the size of your drive, this might take several minutes. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it is checking for errors.

Update the .NET framework
Download and install the latest .NET Framework
Download Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 from Official Microsoft Download Center

If still the error persists please provide us the error log:
Type eventvwr.msc /s in the address bar.
List any events that are listed as "Error" in the main window when you go to "Windows Logs" and "Application." ... Read more

Hi all,

I have this problem whereby I have a mobile broadband by Vodafone and have installed it's Mobile Connect software in order to connect to the internet. However, after many tries and reinstalls, the problem persisted. Below is a screenshot of what is shown everytime I tried to open the program:

I am using Vista Business. Also, a month ago, I have uninstalled my Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 as I am not needing them for my programming-based projects anymore... And this is not the first time the side-by-side error has occurred. Previously I am using the Ulead Videostudio software and the Side-by-side error came up after months of usage. The problem I am suspecting maybe due to my uninstallation of MS Visual Studio. Maybe. But Since I ain't a pro in Vista or programming, I have no idea and have been struggling desparately in an attempt to make my Mobile Connect Software work so that I can have use my mobile broadband, which I have signed up for 3 weeks already!!! Seriously, I hope if there's any gurus here who could solve my problem (but hopefully the solution is not to reformat the whole computer as I have many datas not backed-up yet).

Hope to hear from any kind souls soon!!! Thanks, and Blessed Be.

Are you using an internal wireless card or a supplied external USB or PCI type? With either one make sure your drivers are up to date and the software is its highest revision. Also I am sure that technical support through them would have more insight than alot of us on here. Try contacting their respective technical support to troublshoot your issues.

Hello everyone,

For a couple of days now I've been working on a solution for my spontaneous (no spell check because firefox/chrome refuse to launch) Side by Side configuration errors to no avail.

Most programs refuse to launch, giving the usual "[directory for said program] This application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect."

I cannot uninstall/repair any software using the control panel, and most software even give me errors that they cannot be found and can be "unlisted." SFC via command prompt reported several failed file verifications but, and look at my luck, recieves even more errors when trying to fix them. Hence, I'm back where I started. Sxstrace produces a logfile filled with gibberish characters and not one intelligible word I can look at.

To make things even more fun for me, I was not able to boot windows from a USB flash drive or from a DVD for also unknown reasons. Whenever I try to read W7 disk, Windows informs me that it is an empty disk (The same DVD works fine on a different PC) and whenever I try to burn a disk I also get another error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Grav

EDIT: To my information and using 4 different AV/Anti-malware for critical scans, there were no malware of any kind. Also, I'm pretty clean/conservative about what I do on my PC, so I don't really need an AV inthe first place.

Answer:Overwhelming Side by Side Errors for all software

Did you do the SFC following steps from this tutorial? You might need to run it multiple times, and each time it will fix something.

Your windows 7 is clearly corrupted and SFC is clearly the way to go (other than a repair install or a full reinstall), but booting from a DVD is handled by the BIOS (the motherboard's own firmware) that runs on its own, so it will work regardless of windows 7 condition if the DVD itself is ok. BIOS works even without Windows 7. That's the entire point of it.

Can you go in bios options (also called Setup when the PC is powered on, it will write a line in white text on the black screen to say what key to press to enter BIOS or Setup, it is usually F1, F2, Del or F10 depending on what PC is that) use the keyboard arrows to move around and make sure that the boot order has the CD/DVD drive before the hard drive? Then save and exit BIOS (from the last tab to the right).

Then place the dvd in the reader and restart. Then follow the tutorial linked.

Hi Guys

Our Vista windows (which has never had any issues before) starting going crazy a few days ago (I believe it happened after a Windows automatic update one night). I have seen a few relevant posts on here regarding similar problems but none I have found are the same as ours. At this stage the things that stopped working are:

Itunes (Itunes was not installed correctly. Please Reinstall, Error 7 Windows Error 14001)
Microsoft Office, All Applications (This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.)
AVG Virus Scan (would not load at all and reinstalling did not set)
Adobe Acrobat and all email attachments will not load through Internet Explorer or Opera.
Quicktime (Side by Side Configuartion is incorrect. Please see App event log for more details)
Windows Messenger (Side by Side error also)

Event Viewer when opened says "MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap in may not have been installed correctly. Name: event viewer CLSID: FX:{etc)

I would try reinstalling Vista but the CD is in a different country still in a box waiting to be shipped so not really an option for now and all of our Wedding plans (6 weeks away) are on this computer so we cant afford to lose anything (not that we can load anything without Office)

I have tried the SFC/Scannow and it discovered errors but could not fix. I have tried updating Vista through the Windows updat... Read more

ok, so for a while now ive been getting errors which appear to be when i try opening microsoft office , and windows live programs.
For office, when i try to open a file from computer, or open the program itself, it comes up with this: "this application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more details".

Now when i try to open a windows live program such as windows live messenger, i get the same side by side error message, and the event log brings up this: "Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe". When I try to get into Word/Excel/Powerpoint I get the side by side error. I've tried troubleshooting and following the basic steps in some of the posts here but no luck so far System restore does not work either.

When downloading/installing the VC++ downloads, the second one won't install and I get the error message "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable" and then "Installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it"

I've got some logs here, I've tried so many things my head starts to spin, but hopefully they can give you an idea of what's going on and what I've done.. I think I've run sfc a time or two now and it looks like everything's fixed there.. but here goes..

It seems that it is important to uninstall VC++ completely before trying to install the download or update (see post #6 in that thread).

A few days ago, my Vista Home 32bit suddenly gave errors when I tried to launch some applications including Ms Office 2007.
Error messages I got include:
Side-By-Side Configuration is Incorrect and

I fixed the problem by installing the following patch alone:

Your scenario may vary & may require other VC++ distributable packages to be installed/reinstalled.

Good luck.

Up to a week ago everything is working O.K., including 'Calibre', 'Glary Utilities', 'Audacity', 'Kindle' and 'Open Office Writer, Base, Calc and Draw' software.

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

I have done downloading software again, with the the list, but is still not working.

Answer:Side-by-Side Configuration INCORRECT

You have a serious problem. Your best bet is to try to restore from a Restore Point that was saved before the problem started. If that doesn't work or you don't have such a Restore Point you will likely have to re-install Windows and all your software. There's a small chance you can boot from the Win7 distribution disk and try System Repair, but I don't have high hopes for this.

The error message you are getting refers to problems with the WINSXS (Windows Side by Side) subdirectory. This is the place Win7 stores copies of DLL files that get installed with different applications. A DLL file is library (Dynamic Link Library) of executable modules used by different programs.

In old versions of Windows different DLL modules were deemed as reusable or shareable, with the hope that only one copy would be installed on a system. (That's when disk space was expensive and MS wanted to conserve it.) But what happened was different software makers would install updated version of a DLL and this would break other programs that relied on an older version. As a resul MS would get zillions of tech support calls and spend hours fixing things. So they decided to "fix" the prblem by keeping a copy of each DLL installed by a program.

This works pretty well except for 2 things: (1) WINSXS gets increasingly large over time, and there is nothing anyone can do about it, and (2) bad things start happening if WINSXS gets messed up. This is the problem you have.

There are no utility pr... Read more

Hi,
Im pretty new here and Im sure theres other posts for this error. Ive been looking all over to solve this issue and nothing has worked so far and I dont know what to do anymore. So Im very greatfull for any help you could give me.

I get this error for several programs like AVG and Windows Live Mail. I tried installing the C++ Redistributable 2005, 2005 SP1, 2008, 2008 SP1, 2010, 2010 SP1 but that didnt help. I also tried the command sfc/scannow but that turned up nothing. I tried running sxstrace.exe but it just comes up for like half a second and then disappears into the background. I then had a look in the event log but to be honest I have no idea what Im looking at or what I should even look for so I will just paste the log for AVG here and hopefully someone can help.

By the way I have a HP Pavillion Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. Not sure what other information would be helpful.

I appreciate any help on this. I currently dont have an anti-virus program on my laptop so I really want to get this problem sorted. Dont really want to install windows agian.

So thanks again.

Hi,

I woke up this morning and found that many programs on my Vista pc aren't working coming up with the error message 'side-by-side configuration is incorrect'. It occurs on firefox, internet explorer, windows media player and a game I recently installed Evil Genius. It my be happening on other programs but I haven't across them.

I checked on other forums and they suggest uninstalling AVG (which didn't work) and the Vista website suggested a restore point but whenever I try and do that it gives me an error page briefly and then the computer restarts.

Help would be much appreciated.

programs affected include explorer.exe

My friends parents computer was running windows vista. They were using a three mobile broadband adapter to connect to the internet (note: despite mobile broadband, it is a desktop). Suddenly, it started showing errors all over the place at startup, the main one being "Side by side configuration incorrect", and they could not launch their 3 mobile application. they asked me for help, and I read up on it, and decided to reinstall the 2008 c++ redist. This didn't work, so I decided to just install win7. When I try to run the connection program in 7, it does absolutely nothing, and all the other exes in the program folder give the old "Side by side configuration incorrect" error. Any idea what is causing this?

Answer:Side by side configuration incorrect

Windows 7 contains a file backup to ensure that different programs get the versions of files that it wants.
These are stored in a side by side or SxS folder.

I would do these 2 things first.

Right click the command prompt and choose run as administrator.
type chkdsk /r <enter>
It will want you to reboot.
This will test file integrity.

After it finishes open another command prompt (admin)
type sfc /scannow <enter>
This will make sure that the system files are the correct ones.
