Please, Where Do I Find the Sites So I Can Identify Hardware?

Question: Please, Where Do I Find the Sites So I Can Identify Hardware?

I can't find the web sites any more that I use when I would refer to them
to identify all kinds of hardware, like Motherboards, Video Cards, CPU's, Hard Disk Drives, and all the other types of hardware and Cards.

I have so much Hardware from older computers and would love to be able to ID them being I never marked them on what they were when I took them out of the the cases.

Can everybody please help and post back any information that can help me, web sites that you use and know of, thank you very much for the strong support like all ways, Joe

Preferred Solution: Please, Where Do I Find the Sites So I Can Identify Hardware?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi i recently built a system and all was working fine for about 2 weeks when my system froze while simply browsing my facebook. the pc was completely locked up so i pressed the reset button and then i got no video to my monitor. after a couple google searches (from my phone) i tried swapping my memory around and check power connections to my card and verified all connections. after reboot, i had video but after loading windows i got a BSOD, windows reboot on its own. i then got to the login screen and once i attepmted to put in my password, the system froze with a high pitched noise coming from the speakers. reset once more only to have no video once again. being novice in troubleshooting that is where i stopped.. specs as follows:

AMD Athlon II x4 640
4gb (2x2) Mushkin Silverline 1333 1.5v
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO motherboard
Western Digital 500gb hdd
Kingwin 610w psu
Windows 7 64 bit

everything is new but the psu is a few months old, had it before the build and i got the gtx 275 from a friend used.

i feel in my gut its either my power supply is bad even though it shows NO other symptoms but what was described above or my hard drive is bad. if anyone can give me some trouble shooting steps to follow please do so. thank you!

Answer:help me identify my hardware failure plz

If you can get into Windows, press F8 before the Windows splash, and there should be an option there to not automatically reset after errors. The BSOD will tell us that answer.

It is mostly like the HDD or RAM. Let's not point fingers until we know for sure. We need the stop error number, like 0x000.

I just bought a 2nd hand x200s. A marvellous little machine for less than $200! But I can't quite figure out all the equipment in there. For instance, I don't know if it has WWAN or that it is only WWAN capable. It has the led and the sim slot, but I can't find any indication of a WWAN card actually in there. How can I find out if it has? And if it's not there, can I swap out the Ericsson F3507G from my T400 into my new x200s? And the slot in the front on the right side, is that a Flash card reader? The model is a 7470CR9

---------------X220 Tablet 4298R45; X200s 7470CR9

Go to Solution.

Answer:x200s: how to identify hardware?

According to the Lenovo support site wwan card should be preinstalled in your laptop:
X200s (7470-CR9): Base on 7469-5RG: SL9400(1.86GHz), 4GB RAM, 160GB 7200rpm HD, 12.1in 1280x800 LCD, Intel 4500MHD, Intel 802.11agn, Vodafone WWAN, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, Camera, 9c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro
If your laptop was sold for the 1st owner on the European market the most chance it's Ericsson F3507g wwan card, FRU 43Y6513.
T400 also can be equipped with Ericsson f3507g wwan card too, FRU 43Y6477 for USA market, 43Y6479 for others country. Despite the same model there is a chance it might be not compatible with x200s because of the different approved modem identificators in laptop BIOSes white lists. In this case x200s with modem from the t400 will not boot.
So you can be convinced yorself the wwan card is installed into your x200s at the factory. Follow the page below and type in laptop serial number:
If you'll not identify the card or don't know what to do let us know.

Having some issues finding the hardware causing my problems. Maybe somebody has seen these problems before.

Turn on computer and it will sit at the bios splash screen for about 1 min. then will continue to verifying dmi for about another minute, after that it will not boot from any Hard drive, but will boot from my Windows 2000 pro installation disk. So i decide to re-install windows, format drive it copies setup files reboots, still sits at bios splash screen forever and the verifying dmi pool then wont continue w/ gui part of windows installation, it starts over w/the text portion of setting up windows installs.

I have eliminated the following hardware by swapping known good pieces,
Hard drive
Cd roms
Power supply
All thats left is video card and motherboard, so which is causing these problems and why? I suspect motherboard but dont understand why it can make it through part of the installation and then quit. I would appreciate anybodys opinion on this problem of mine.

Answer:Unable to identify problem hardware!.

Better to try the old standby, take out everything but the CPU/heatsink, MB, video and RAM, what does it do now?

Answer:Solved: How do I identify old hardware for drivers

Good day everyone;

I want to install an SSD as my primary drive, with a clean install of Windows 10 so that I do have to deal with all the bloatware that Lenovo has on the original hard drive. I initially installed the SSD then installed a new distro of Windows 10, but then realized that I can't complete the install without installing all the drivers for my hardware.

How do I identify all the drivers that I will have to have for everything (sound, video, ethernet, etc.)?

I'd appreciate the help. Thanks.

Answer:How do I identify hardware in Lenovo desktop?

Lenovo offers a utility called "System Update" that should handle this for you. Head over to, get it to recognize your machine (or enter your system ID) and it should provide this utility as part of its download offerings. I use it on both of my Lenovo laptops (X220 Tablet and T420 notebook) and it works like a charm.

Hi, I am unsure as to what model of sound device I have, and need to download the drivers for it.
I know it is a High def 7.1 realtek sound device, but not sure of the exact model.

I have had simalar experiences in the past with other hardware too, where I had to guess which drivers to download, because I wasn't sure what exact model I had.

It is an on board sound card, but the sound device drivers I downloaded with the motherboard chipset drivers, seems to be incorrect, or corrupt, So I am going to try and find the drivers manually through Realtek.
Is there actually a FREE program out there that can identify the name of the sound device on my computer?

Answer:I need a program to identify my hardware devices

often these programs need the drivers installed to identify the hardware - but here are a few free configuration programs

I think belarc needs the driver, NOT sure about SIW - System Information for Windows - maybe worth trying that first

Hi there
If you are struggling to identify drivers etc - especially if you bought a computer with pre-installed stuff on it but you want to upgrade the OS to full retail or another version then I suggest - BEFORE installing the new OS try one of these FREE programs -- - they are STAND alone -- they don't require logging in to Driver max or those sites that sucker you in and then spam you with email every few days if you DON'T upgrade to "Pro" etc etc.

Read the article first before you willy nilly download everything.

Since installing the Synaptics UltraNav driver version from Lenovo ThinkVantage System Update, the synaptics features of the built-in trackpad are no longer controllable (it is acting in its default tap-to-click state, rather than respecting the preferences set in the UI). In addition, attempting to go to the mouse preferences in Windows brings up this dialogue: Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver. If you have installed another PS/2 Pointing Device Driver please uninstall the Synaptics driver by clicking the Yes button. You then need to reinstall your pointing device for your external device again. Do you want to uninstall the Synaptics driver now? Which I have not done. I could perhaps attempt letting it uninstall then reinstall, but since the driver was preinstalled, then updated only through ThinkVantage System Update, where can I find the correct installer to run? Windows' Driver Rollback for the trackpad is greyed out a possibility*. I do have a current image backup but clearly this is a rather extreme measure. As an aside, during this batch of updates I have noticed that the Wacom WinTab and Windows Ink interfaces for the pen digitizer have started working: is some fringe possibility that this is related but I cannot really see why updating the Synaptics driver would break the Synaptics device; if anything I'd expect... Do not use my Lenovo for year from purchase, start using and upgrade it to Windows 8. Have a problem with USB3 host and dual video card drivers. Trying to update my BIOS and drivers, but totally stucked.  So, here is label from laptop: Here is my BIOS info: My laptop is the same configuration: I had 4Gb installed by default and add another 4. And here is screenshot from update utility: If it is does matter - my region is CIS (Russia). So, now I have a lot of questions:1) is there any online/e-mail support for IDEA laptops from lenovo? I found only for THINK, and I do not relay on phone support a lot. I check my warranty it is valid and active.2) what exact model is my laptop? It seems IdeaPad? Y470p (0855-???) - but I'm not sure as different tools and specifications shows me different information, and there is no info at all about full model number (symbols after 0855).3) if my laptop is Y470p where I can find BIOS updates? In Y470p section there is no BIOS update at all4) is bios updates for Win7 fully compatible with Win8? I think yes - but not sure.5) is Y470 bios updates and drivers compatible with my laptop? hi alex-chekhachev,
Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
Regarding your questions:
1. For the USB 3.0, and the dual video card, can you try to install these drivers:
USB 3.0 (depending on the model)
Intel HD 3000
Windows 8 64bit     Windows 8 32bit
Intel VGA Driver        Intel VGA Drivervga127864.exe        vga126832.exe
80.8MB                      68.6MB
AMD Radeon? HD 7690M
Windows 8 32bit / 64bit
AMD VGA Drivervga1308.exe334MB
You must install the Intel Graphics driver first before the ATI Radeon.
2. For support, as per this article, the best way to get the unit serviced is to call the Lenovo Hardware Department (you can use Skype as the phone number is toll free).
3. Your model is a Y470 (20090) - which is identical to the Y470p (0855-xxx) as per this pdf data sheet (same result If you try to google the part number of the machine: 59320771).
4. As for the BIOS update, there's currently no updates available yet for this model.
5. Windows 8 and Windows 7 are technically identical (you can run softwares in compatibility mode) but since it has an updated version of the kernel, it's not recommended to flash the BIO... Read more

Hey all!

Looking for a way to create a robust VPN between 3 sites that can seamlessly maintain connectivity that can tolerate the loss of any one ISP at each site:

1. Each site has 2 ISPs (2 DSL connections and static IPs per site). ISP reliability is crap here so we need backups.
2. Each remote site needs a connection with the main office, but each remote site does not need to be connected to the other remote site.
3. Bandwidth requirements are close to none, as we only have <10mbps connections.

I need to know what is the cheapest setup/appliance/firewall/vpn router that can do this.

Current VPN is setup via IPSEC and with cheap 5-10 year old DLinks that are dying, and is currently very vulnerable to single ISP failures. Apart from this, we have no managed switches of any sort. All are of the unmanaged 10/100 variety.

All the local Cisco resellers are trying to sell me up to ISA device or firewall that cost more than all the computers at the remote sites put together for just one unit, any they are telling me I need three...

What are the most cost effective options do I have at this point? Linux boxes?

Other possibly relevant information:
I have a pair of RV320s in the mail, as a stopgap solution in case the DLinks die off tomorrow...

Answer:Hardware that can do Robust IPSEC w/ 3 Sites

if you got spare hardware laying around i think the easy setup would be a pfSense at all the sites, pfSense support more than 1 internet connection.

I think I have a rather strange problem. I know the site is working, yet IE says 404 site not found. How do I know it is working.I have XP loaded twice on my system. The back up XP works fine, I can view the site, but in the main XP IE says 404 site not found. So I installed netscape 7.1 thinking it was IE with the problem, but I get the same error. What could be stopping me from seeing a particulare site, also many sites are loaded and at the bottom right says done with errors.I use Zone Alarm, but I did shut this down so that I was sure it was not the cause, but still the same.I do have a newer USB driver for my modem on the main XP set up.I might try and re install the older driver, even though I can't see this would be the problem, but I don't know what else to try.RegardsAnthony

Suddenly I cannot get my e-mail to download as well as certain internet sites to open.
I contacted my service provider and they said that there is nothing wrong with the servers or my mail settings. The problem must be with my pc.
I did a scan for adware and malware and found a few stuff but still nothing is working as it should.
The e-mail can be checked via webmail.
What could the problem be ?? It is as if XP is blocking certain things on the pc.
Can anyone please help me ??

I'm using WinXP and installed SP2 last night. When the computer rebooted I was unable to access any web site. (I'm now working from my laptop) My son suggested pinging on a website using the numerical ID -- it worked, and then pinging on the sites name -- didn't work. I then attempted to visit the site using the numeric ID -- worked again, but no luck when entering the URL name.

I've just downloaded a new driver for the modem, but I'm beginning to think that is NOT the problem.

Thanks for any help, Art

Merry Christmas Everyone and Happy New Year!

It's been quite a while since I've been on this site. Been busy.

I do have a question, but first I'm going to rant. I apologize for this and that I'm not sure where to post this, so I'm doing it here.

I used to use CNET to look for different software, but now they try and include some crappy d/l thing everytime, unless you can manage to find your way around it. Now when I'm looking for new software, I'll check out CNET to maybe find it and get the review, BUT I'll DOWNLOAD IT FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE and NOT CNET!

CNET's "add-on" is full of garbage, spyware or whatever and you have to spend time removing the darn thing off the pc. I no longer trust ANYTHING off their site and recommend it to NO ONE! Also, their check box system on the left to refine the search doesn't give you enough time to check off more than one box at a time before it starts searching and starts clogging the system. And there is no comment or contact info to let them know their site is beginning to suck, so they obviously are not interested in anyone's comments or suggestions, so their site can rot as far as I care.

That's my rant!.... And now here's my question:

Can anyone suggest similar sites to that of CNET that gives reviews on the software, but where the downloads are CLEAN! Not "we'll give you faster d/l, but it'll cost ya!" or "Here! Try this spyware on... Read more

Answer:Solved: Want to find other d/l sites besides CNET!

Answer:Can you find Adobe software cheaper on other sites?

That is a real good question
Does it mean 1 pc or one family.
I do know that some software allows up to 2 or 3 installs on different computers as long as they are in the same house or office.

I would put in the cd and go to install then read the liscense agreement as this is the determining factor is what that agreement is for that cd

My computer has been infected with spyware. The desktop was changed to an all black color with a message in the lower right corner saying it had been infected and that I should run anti-spyware now. Task manager was also disabled. When I logged onto the Internet, I could view some websites, although many times I was redirected to some shopping sites. I was also getting many viruses put on my machine.

I checked the recent files in my c:\windows\system32 folder and noticed several that were recently put there. I deleted some of them, but I could not delete one named "sipov.dll". I did a search for this and came upon your website. I noticed several other people had the same spyware on their box so I followed the instructions in the posts. Here is what I have done so far.

Run Trend Micro Anti-Spyware and CWShredder
Run ComboFix
Run SUPERAntiSpyware
Run Killbox to delete sipov.dll.
Run Fixwareout
Run Hijack This and deleted the R0, R3, O2, and O6 files.

I let the Trend Micro Anti-Spyware, CWShredder, ComboFix, SUPERAntiSpyware, and Fixwareout take care of the files that came up as suspect. Now my Task Manager is enabled. I am also not getting any more viruses put on my box. I was getting some trojans like TROJ_BHO_LU before I ran this stuff.

I can access the Internet thru my dial-up provider, but I cannot access any websites. When I bring up Internet Explorer, it will first say it is trying to find my home site, then it changes to something like "Finding site: l... Read more

Answer:Connection Status Fine, CANT FIND SITES

Hi havecoolth--- First, you need to post in your own thread, as it gets confusing if we start replying and make a post to the wrong person> you do not want to be following someone else's instructions, either.

Start a new thread by using the New Thread button, its at top of the page for forum on Security forum, then look for the New Thread button to post your log. I post says "Reply" to post the log...that will work for you after you post the first log, OK? Or, if you just go ahead, start a new thread and put in just the basic question....and follow the steps, make a log, the directions below will be OK as you would be replying, using the Post a Reply button then, hope you see what I mean!
Next, Hijackthis fits easily on a 3.5in 1.44mb floppy diskette, you are in luck if both of your computers have a floppy drive, you can download hijackthis.exe to a diskette and copy/paste it onto the bad pc and run to save a log that way. A CD will also work, in a pinch burn the download to a regular CDRom disc and copy it etc.

There are directions here to do it: There are .zip form and .exe form, take your pick.

Download it here:

Or here.
It's a direct download so be ready with the folder for it.

Basically, you create a new folder, the desktop is OK provided you make a folder, name it something like HJT, and download TO that folder, run hijackthis.exe from there. If there are users of the computer who might st... Read more

hi, I had this problem last week, it persisted for several days, but I was able to use system restore to fix it. Today, it has re-occured, and system restore hasn't worked. I went to, downloaded Adaware, it detected a trojan virus. I followed directions to get rid of it (safe mode, disable system restore, update virus definitions, run a full scan) Trojan has been eliminated, but I still can't access my bank site, AOL IM, or Casino on Net. System Restore now won't go back since I enabled it again. I can, however, get email. Last week, I couldn't get email, so perhaps this is a different problem? I have followed directions on the Cannot Find Server page, checking Internet Options, Settings, LAN connections, etc. None of this has helped. Do you have any suggestions on what the problem could be? I would appreciate any ideas.

Hey. I'm looking to upgrade my brothers' computer. I need a new mobo, CPU, and some RAM modules.

Now, I know I can go to newegg myself and look there, but I also know that you guys are pros when it comes to this, and I'd like the best bang for my buck. So I'd appreciate it if you could help me find the best deals out there (from newegg).

Ok, so for mobos, I prefer AMD-based socket 939 (please no AM2--just 939) and exactly 1 PCI-E x16 slot (for later upgrading). For now, they'll be using onboard video, though, so make sure that that's at least mediocre.

For CPU, any 939 Athlon 64 will do.

And finally, for RAM, just please have it be compatible with the mobo. No more than 512MB is needed (again, at least just for now. 3-4 sockets for RAM is preferred).

In total, I don't want to spend any more than $225 including S&H, excluding mail in rebates.

Thanks, dudes.

Only a couple of benign items there......

Let's use a program to scan for any trojans that may exist. Download TDS-3. Learn how to use it here. Make sure to update it after you installed it. You can get the manual updates here. When you launch the program, it will scan your memory for running processes. This will take less than 30 seconds. Next go to System Testing on the menu and choose Full System Scan. After that's finished, post the log file by selecting everything on the top pane (select from bottom to top). If any alarms are found, it will be listed in the bottom window. Please copy and paste that here also if it applies.

This is a really basic question, but I want to know.

I've come to the realization that my 3 Megabit internet, while decent for my everyday needs, is still pretty crappy. Online videos are getting higher and higher def now, and I would like a better speed for downloading in general.

The problems are I don't want to go past $55 a month, and I've tried this before. My ISP is ATT (DSL internet) and I tried to upgrade my internet to 6 Megs years ago. It actually worked okay for a year, but then frequent disconnects started happening. After 6 tech visits, it was ascertained I was too far from the ATT office or something for the 6 Meg service. Funny, I was told different when I signed up. Anyway, I can't go to 6 meg on regular ATT DSL.
I WOULD try Uverse, but I've heard some bad things there. Plus, it's a new service that probably has new service fees.
I don't know about cable; the only provider in my area that does it, it seems, is Comcast. I don't trust them that much (had them for cable tv way back), and I've heard that cable internet in general is inconsistent in its rates anyway. If I could help it, I'd like to stay on DSL. If, however, cable at its worst speeds beats the DSL I have now at a decent price, I'd be willing to consider it.

So, etching out this whole gamut leaves me without options. Should I try Uverse? Should I try Cable? I don't know, so I'm looking for a site or two that will help me navigate th... Read more

AT&T UVerse is DSL. You can pick from DSL, Cable, Satellite, or wireless. That's about it. If you live in a big city, you might be able to get 4G wireless at a good price.

Any one please help, i just recently had my xbox 360 stolen I ran it on a wireless network, I know the Mac address and whomever stole it used it and logged into my network which tells me they are near me. I suspect they changed the host name and may be using a new IP address since I know they have still been logging online based on my gamertag activity. is there any way to trace my mac address by scannig the local wireless networks? that way I can catch the *******s....PLEEEASE HELP.

Answer:Find hardware using MAC address

If they are logging onto your router, then no. If they log onto their own network, then you can ask one of the game servers to ask for the IP address that logs onto the servers and then you can give the info to the Police, which can get the information on the user from the IP address.

However I don't think the person will be too far from you as the wireless range won't be that far out.

Was this at home, school, etc?

After the download is complete, the driver must be unpacked from C>Drivers>Win>Ethernet. Posting the 7-character model number of your T43 (either 26??-??? or 187?-???) would help us assist you better. Good luck and keep us posted.

Answer:Cannot find network hardware

did you get a Restore CD with the laptop
Dells often have a partition which you can restore from
Note sure but I think taping F10 on boot goes to that partiion,

One of the above should restore the PC to the factory settings with all drivers

Otherwise the drivers off the website should work

Hello all,

I just reinstalled Windows XP, with Service Pack 2. Now, for some reason, the computer doesn't seem to realize it has a wireless card, and does not automatically join networks. Then, when I go to "Network Setup Wizard", I get a "cannot find network hardware" error.... what happened?

Thank you all,

I have never done It before I know you can over clock the videocard (mines a nvidia geforce8800gt) someone told me gateway made me unable to change my mother board so i think that takes the processor out but what about ram and the hard drive? I dont expect a step by step guide (id like one tho but I just want a link to a guide what makes it the hardest is I do not even know the name or brand of my ram or hard drive (I even looked on gateway and couldnt find it) device manager doesnt have it either. any other things that can be overclocked I would appreciate as well. The only thing I found a good amount of info on is cooling. Thank you for your time..

Quote from: doc_holliday420 on August 24, 2008, 02:55:10 PM someone told me gateway made me unable to change my mother board so i think that takes the processor out but what about ram and the hard drive? If your BIOS doesn't allow you to set CPU parameters, it is doubtful that you can (or should) overclock the RAM. There is no overclocking for hard drives.Overclocking is science and art! You have a nice system based on your other topic - my advice is->don't screw with it! Perhaps you could benefit from another video card, see what advice you get. Best of luck!

My computer has been playing up for a while, I just got a CD which should find out which piece of hardware is defective, do I have to boot up from CD through the bios (and if so how to do that) or do I boot up into windows first and play the CD normally? The CD is called Ultimate boot cd.Thank you.

Answer:How to CD to find out which hardware is playing up

As far as I can see click here is not really a tool for an 'Absolute Beginner'.If you want to run it you will need to set the BIOS to boot from the CD drive click here then restart with the CD in the drive.

I am getting ready to slick my NT system because I can not get any of my administrative tools to work. I don't know what else to do.

So what I want to do is reinstall NT but I do not have any of my system drivers(computer was given to me)

Is there a way I can find out what hardware I have in it?

Another quick NT is a standalone not connected to a network..When I go into User Manager.. I get the error message "The network path was not found." "Do you want to select another domain to administer?"

What can I do?

Answer:{Resolved} - How can I find out what hardware I have?

Are you logging onto the NT machine with an account that is in the local administrator's account?

From the sound of things, it seems like you have been given a computer that has NT SERVER on it, and was once on a network LAN.

Once you are logged into the machine with a local administrator's account, you need to access the control panel, and slowly go through the different icons to find what drivers have been installed for the different hardware components. In NT4, there is no one area for this, like in Win9x. You need to look in the Multimnedai applet for your sound card, the network applet for your network card, the display applet for your screen card, the modem applet for your modem, the printer applet for your printer...

As for the User manager for Domains question... Click on the YES button, and type in your Computer's name. That will connect you top the local User manager.

I am running on a Windows 2000 network with about 20 client machines. We run Windows 98, 2000, and XP on the client workstations. Some of the workstations have no problem opening IE and getting onto the internet. Other client workstations (both Windows 98 and XP) cannot get onto the internet. We keep getting the message ďcannot find server or DNS error.

Also, the workstations that are having the problem seem to vary. Some times workstations that are having problems suddenly work OK and workstations that were not having problems suddenly begin having problems.

In the past, all these workstations had no problem getting onto the internet. Also, the workstations that cannnot access the internet have no problem accessing the network. Iíve checked all the settings and they appear to be OK. Iíve tried resetting the workstations and that hasnít helped.

Can anyone give me some incite to what may be causing this problem.

Hello all,I had a very bad spate of spyware/malware (surfsidekick and others) recently and after many many restarts, adaware scans, spybot scans, zonelabs scans, etc I was able to remove almost all of it. There are still one or two malware apps that cannot be detected or removed automatically, unfortunately. When I boot my machine I now have Zonealarm watch every process carefully and ask for permission to run (annoying, but what can I do?). I have googled every entry to make sure that I am only allowing good stuff to load - perhaps I missed something.SUSPECT BEHAVIOR:Once I click anywhere in the desktop or load the contents of a folder into an explorer window I hear an audible "pop-pop" sound and a tiny, 3-pixel window appears in the upper left of my desktop. Then every once in a while that app (or something else) defocuses the window selection from whatever I'm working on to that app. It's very annoying. Also, at random intervals I am getting zonealarm warnings that something is trying to phone home to a spy site. ZA blocks the connection but I can't figure out where it's coming from. To be clear, this often happens with no app or explorer window open, and I have not even run FF or IE in the current boot session. Finally, also randomly, all items on the desktop dissapear. This _looks_ like an explorer.exe crash but I can still use explorer windows. Only desktop items are gone. Manually killing explorer.exe and rerunning it returns desktop stuff for a while.D... You're not alone. My home computer was doing the exact same thing about an hour ago. It was happening also on Mozilla. I started running an adaware just to cover all bases, and the sites started working (don't think that had anything to do with fixing it, as the scan had not completed and nothing had yet been fixed). Not sure what happened. Anybody know?

I have Windows XP Media Center Edition on a Dell E521. Just recently, within this past week, I have connected my USB SanDisk ImageMate SDDR-05 Flashcard reader to my computer in order to transfer picture files from my camera to the computer via a flashcard. While doing the initial setup the Wizard Install box instructs me through all the necessary steps, but it finally states that: ?the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software.? I?ve attempted this procedure several times but always with the same result...I still can?t find the device anywhere on my computer, not even within the My Computer icon. On the device manager the SanDisk hardware appears (identified as USB CFII), but as a yellow question mark upon which I always end up uninstalling/removing it. I called SanDisk tech help and they said that their Flashcard Reader already has its driver pre-installed within every XP system...and that is why their website does not offer any ImageMate SDDR-05 driver downloads for XP. I have even tried changing to the other computer USB ports including one which my printer already works without any problems...but I still get the same none result. This hardware did work, without any issues, with my older Dell which had a Windows 98 OS. The SanDisk tech suggested I contact Microsoft... Any suggestions on what I could/should do to remedy this? Please help!!!!

Note: The printer's scanner worked fine on my cousin's netbook so I don't think its defective.

I recently bought a new printer which is also supposed to be able fax and scan. The printer works fine, but I am not able to scan. During installation there was an error ("Your new hardware might not work properly"). I opened up Device Manager and there you go, a yellow exclamation mark ! next to Lexmark 2600 under images and devices.
To fix the problem, I tried to update the driver from the installation disc. But it showed me the message "Wizard could not find a better match for you hardware than the one it already has"
I went to the Lexmark website and downloaded and installed the updates, followed the troubleshooter, and even chatted for an hour with a support operator. The instructions he gave me were the same thing I was already doing; try updating from the cd and the downloaded package from the site, install, uninstall, reinstall, try different usb port... but i got the same disappointing result; Wizard cant find a better match.

04:48:58 PM [Marco] I see. I apologize. That is correct. However, to be honest, I am not certain why XP is not allowing you to update using the downloaded package and the CD.
05:02:27 PM [Marco] I see. I apologize we have perform the necessary steps to have the printer updated, however the issue persists. There may be a software or Operating system policy blocking or not allowing the update.

Any help would be apprec... Read more

I recently completed a clean install of Windows 7 on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite l655-s5150). However, I am unable to update my drivers as my computer cannot identify most of my hardware.
Under device manager it has "Other Devices" listed as "Ethernet Controller", "Network Controller", and "PCI Simple Communications Controller". All three have a yellow exclamation mark next to them and Manufacturer: Unknown.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Answer:Cannot Find Hardware After Clean Install

Go to Toshiba Support, click on the Download tab and enter your system details. Download and install the chipset drivers and then the remaining items should be recognised. You can then download and install the other missing drivers if Windows does not install them automatically.

Here's the setup:
Recently purchased an EMachines M6805 laptop (A64 3000+). Laptop comes with built in 802.11b/g lan in the form of a Broadcom 54g MaxPerformance wireless card.

After fiddling with it for 10 minutes, wireless worked out of the box. It came with Windows XP EMachines Version pre-installed with all the drivers. Now, of course I'm too stupid to settle for this, so I reformatted two days later and put XP Pro on here. It was lightning fast after that. Problem was, it had none of the drivers on here, so I chickened out and put my other copy of normal Windows XP Home on here. I found the drivers this time and installed them from a restore CD, and wireless worked and so did wired. So far so good.

The problem arose in that Win XP Home didn't accept the emachines cd-key cause it was for a specific version, and i wanted to use my legal home copies, because they don't have all the bloatware the Emachines one does. So I stupidly resorted to killing the WPA (windows product activation) process with a crack. I'm pretty sure I can narrow that down to when it stopped working, though I can't be sure because I fell asleep with my pc on in my bed, and woke up 4 hours later with it sitting next to me. This is around the last time it worked, but I was tired, so don't clearly recollect.

I then got frustrated and reinstalled XP Pro one more time, and it still didn't work even with the drivers. Now I've put the original EMachines copy of ... Read more
