My keyboard confuses ALT button as sleep button

Question: My keyboard confuses ALT button as sleep button

Hi everyone, I have a very weird error here...
My PC is a P4, 3,4GHZ, 1GB RAM, Radeon x800xl running WIN XP with SP2
But the real problem is my keyboard... I got an a4 tech kehyboard AntiRSI keyboard, and a few minutes ago while I pressed alt+tab to get out of a game (PES5) it went in stand by mode....and the problem is I can't even get out of it...
I restarted, went in windows again and tried to see what proccesses are running and pressed ctrl + alt + delete and it went in stand by again...
Anyway I founded that this is caused when pressing the left ALT button...My pc seems to confuse it as my sleep button ( I tested this by going in Control Panel - Power Options - Advanced and played with the "When I press my sleep button on my computer" and selected different options and when I pressed the left alt button it did what I selected in there )

Does anyone know what's the cause of this and how I can fix it?

Preferred Solution: My keyboard confuses ALT button as sleep button

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I know where the power button is , but where is the sleep button?  You can set what these buttons do.. I have them both set to put pc to sleep.  The power button works to do that, but where is the sleep button? what is the button on the side after the Power button and headphones buttons on the yoga 700? pressing that does nothing. What is that button? Does anyone know? Doesnt do anything. ALso, what is the diff between hibernate and sleep?  Need to know the difference between these 2 modes please.

Answer:Difference between Power button and Sleep button and Hibernate and sleep

I assume that you are talking about the power button and sleep button shown in the Power Options settings of the Control Panel?

These are simply the names used for two functions in the WIndows operating system, which is used in thousands of different devices made by many manufacturers. These functions may or may not correspond to actual, physical buttons.

In a Laptop, there will generally be a physical button that corresponds to the "Power button", while a sensor in the lid acts as the sleep button (that is, closing the lid will correspond to "pressing the sleep button").

That's what the Yoga 700 follows - the larger physical button on the right hand side corresponds to the "Power button", while a sensor in the lid corresponds to the "sleep button".

As for the other buttons on the Yoga 700, I don't have one to hand, but you should be able to find out their purpose from the documentation for your Yoga 700. I suspect that if you have a recessed button, it will be for the OneKey Recovery system, and if there is another button similar to the power button, but smaller, then this will probably be the display rotation lock button.

Finally, the difference between hibernate and sleep is explained here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Sleep-and-hibernation-frequently-asked-questions

HI: As with many people, the LCD hinge on my Y510 broke. After repacing the broken hinge, we found that the laptop would only boot using the NOVO key and not the power button.  (The power button light is on when the unit is booted - it just doesn't work.) As well, if we put the laptop to sleep, nothing happens when you press the power button or the NOVO button. The only thing that we can do is unplug the laptop, pull out the battery and reboot. I took it to a reputable repair place and they could see no damage to any wires in terms of the LCD hinges being replaced. Hibernation seems to work fine - but it takes longer to shut down/boot up than shutting down and cold booting in VISTA. Because Windows VISTA is so slow at booting up, it is such a pain to have to power down all the time. Anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on? (I've considered doing a restore to see if it's software related  - but it seems to be a hardware issue.) Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer. Dave

Answer:Y510 starts only with NOVO button & not power button & does not wake up from sleep

Friend of mine has got problem with his new desktop (XP SP2) , when he starts the PC it boots normally till it reaches where it shows windows XP logo then the screen gets blank (i.e he can not see the login name for users).

What he used to do: is press the sleep button on the keyboard, then after that press the hardware switch on/off button (not the reset button) on the tower of the hard box.

After pressing switch on/off button, he gets directly (pay attention to this) to the login screen where he can see the usernames for all users.

He has to do this procedure every time he would like to boot the desktop

Hi every one,
Recently I purchased new PC,
After installing windows XP Pro SP3 I found that there is a missing button in Power option properties. The missing button is (When I press the sleep button on my computer), I can find only (When I press the power button on my computer).
My system configuration is as follow
Mother board Gigabyte EP45-UD3R Rev 1.1
My graphic card is ATI Radeon HD 5670
Windows XP SP3
RAM 4Gb Kingston DDRII
CPU Core 2 Quad 2.66 GHz
It worth saying that I can shutdown, hibernate or put my PC into sleep mode, so the functions are working but only the button is missing.
I will appreciated very much if some can advise me how to restore the missing button. Is there some option in BIOS that will enable this button?
I contacted Gigabyte customer support, but they directed me to Microsoft, I also contacted ATI but they directed me to Microsoft or BIOS settings. In my BIOS I can't find any option that may affect this button. Any advise will be appreciated
Best regards

Answer:[SOLVED] Button of (When I press sleep button) is not available in my Power option pr

Does the case actually have a separate Sleep Button? I suspect it's not even connected, as the motherboard manual doesn't show a connection for a Sleep Button, only a Power Button.
Windows Power Options won't list it, as it doesn't exist.

If you have a Sleep Button on the keyboard, it might not be listed in Power Options either. That would be up to the Driver software to add that option. You may have to use the software that came with the keyboard to configure the sleep button on the keyboard.

My wife's Mac Mini is so old Apple will not update the OS, stating the hardware is too old. I think Apple just wants us to purchase a new Mac. We didn't. I built her a new PC with a mix of older, but still good hardware.

So far so good but I have hit a snag. I can only wake the PC out of sleep when pressing the power button, not by pressing "any key" on the keyboard or mouse which I thought was normal.

We will use a USB type keyboard soon but for now the keyboard is an older Microsoft brand which uses a PS/2 connector, not a USB. I don't know if that might be the issue or maybe some power setting I've missed. In Power Options, Balanced is selected & under "Choose what the power button does" is set to "Shut down". I use these settings on my PC as well & pressing any key on the keyboard bring my PC out of sleep.

Any suggestions?

Answer:PC only comes out of sleep with power button, not keyboard (?)

The Keyboard item in Control Panel is not configured to wake the computer when you press a key on the keyboard.
The system should ideally wake up if the mouse is moved, however you can follow the steps mentioned below which will also help:

Open Device Manger by typing Devmgmt.msc into Start Menu
Expand Keyboards from Device Manger
Right click your keyboard or mouse , select Properties
Under the Power Management tab you will see the "Allow this device to wake up the computer " Check that , apply and save the setting .
Examine the BIOS settings of your computer for power features that disable or reduce power to ports that are used for your keyboard or mouse. Because BIOS access varies by computer, to resolve this issue, see the documentation that is included with your computer. Alternatively, contact your computer manufacturer for information about how to configure the BIOS.

I am at my witts end after spending numerous hours on the phone with HP (somebody in India) trying to resolve the sleep funtion on an HP multimedia keyboard using window Visat Ultimate. My machine is an HP model m8330f with 3 gigs of memory running an AMD quad processor. I have attached the minidump file which appears to indicate that there is bad driver associated with Vista and points to the wrong location in order to sleep causing the blue screen INTERNAL_POWER_FAILURE. I have been to microsofts page and used the other pointers I have found in this post. I think I may actually have a faulty keyboard but HP of course attributes it to windows and wants to recover the system to its original shipping configuration. I don't think they know how to read a dump file either. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:BSOD when using HP keyboard sleep button

This is unfortunantely an all too common Vista issue especially in their x64. If you google Vista Internal_Power_Failure you'll see what I mean. From what i have been able to read supposedly SP1 had a hot fix.

I just upgraded only to find that MS removed the Sleep button from the new version. I used that button all the time on v1. Is there a way to program a hot key or something? There is plenty of room on this keyboard...especially next to the login/off botton. Why was this small button removed?

Answer:No Sleep Button on Desktop 6000 v2 Keyboard ???

Hi Saidas and welcome to the Vista forums!

Yep, no sleep button
Maybe you can reassign a button you do not use to perform the action of your choice through the keyboard software.

Hello again!

I need to customize either a keyboard or joypad button, to fire the "F6" key both when pressing down a button AND when depressing it.

I'll explain: I'm working on the setting and instrumentations of a research, and I need to keep things as easy as possible to manipulate. Here is a program's command which is a toggle: I need to press F6 both when I want the function to start, and it to end. Since you can't see the screen when pressing it, customizing it as a hold button would prevent errors.

Thanks for any help!

Please let me know the difference between sleep button and power button

Is sleep button the one which will be on the keyboard?

On the CPU there will 2 buttons one will be to start the computer and another one to restart computer?

Can these buttons be used to work like to enter in sleep mode, hibernate mode etc(Making changes in power options in control panel)

I'm having windows 7 computer

Answer:Power button and sleep button

sleep buttons depend on the manufacturers to where they go. most laptops sleep function is assigned to an F key and used in conjuction with the function or "fn" button. usually on F2 or F3.
These buttons are not programmable via the power options in control panel.

if its a desktop and doesnt have a dedicated sleep button you can reasign the task to either the restart or power button within control panel and or set it to sleep/hybernate after a given time.

I just did a clean install on W10 and change my bios to UEFI (which it supports.) I'm having this intermittent problem with the Windows "Start" Button in the lower left. It just stops working - left clicking doesn't do anything, although right-clicking does. I just have the basics installed now.

Also, my Windows "Start" key on my keyboard stops working as well. I checked on a keyboard checker and the key itself is fine. I have to log out/back in to get it to work again. Annoying!

Any thoughts?

I have a Toshiba Satellite L4550-S5976 running under Windows 7. When I start it up (and if I catch it at the right time), the touchpad buttons work fine for a few minutes. After the machine completely boots, the touchpad button problems start - the left button performs as the right button and the right button does nothing.

On a lark, I plugged in a USB mouse and rebooted. When I do that, the mouse works fine AND the touchpad buttons work properly. Carrying around a mouse isn't always convenient so I'd like to have the machine work as expected.

I tried updating the touchpad drivers - that did not fix the problem. I even reinstalled Windows 7 on the machine - that did not fix the problem either.

Any ideas what I could do next to fix this problem?

Thanks, Brian

My operating system is windows 10 Pro.
After updating the bios my built in speaker and touch-pad three button not working. Can anyone give me suggestion that how to overcome this problem.

Answer:Latitude 6430u Build in speaker not working and touch-pad button not working right button and bottom two button

Hello. Try re-installing the IDT audio driver.
Win10 is not supported by Dell on the Latitude 6430u so install the IDT 1.0.6491.0 driver using compatibility mode.
1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive.  [There are two "formats" on the driver's page. Scroll down to the 2nd one, named "Hard Drive" format, and download that one, not the 1st one named "Windows Update Package".]2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.3. The extractor wizard will create a new folder for the driver files. It will be at "c:\dell\drivers\xxxxxx". Write down the exact location that the wizard creates. 4. If the driver begins to install automatically, halt (cancel) the installation.5. Browse to the driver files on the hard drive (the location you wrote down).6. Find the "setup.exe" file.7. Right click on setup.exe to open the context menu.8. Select the Properties.9. Select the Compatibility tab.10. Check the box "run this program in compatibility mode for"... Win7.
If the speakers still do not work, test them with the ePSA or the PSA audio test.
If the speakers pass the test and still do not work, try an earlier version of the BIOS. You can get links to all 11 versions of the BIOS here.  That page also has all the touchpad drivers.
If doing that does not work, perform a system recovery and return the laptop to the operating system that was ... Read more

Now, this computer came with an AMD video card, but I uninstalled those drivers and took out the video card and installed a GTX 570 from EVGA. Check your bios and power options there. It is likely disabled and/or something to do with overclocking cpu ability or not.

It could also be related to your video adapter and/or its driver.

hey funkydiscofreak,

curious to know, does it happen when it is undocked ?

As your unit has 16GB of RAM , did it come with 16 or did you upgrade this on your own? If it was your own personal upgrade, kindly put back the original RAM that first came with your W510.

Is the chipset version at 9.2.0.1021 ? if not, do update.

Anyway, this unit uses Win 2008. Was this the original OS ? If it isn't, did the same problem happen when it was on the original OS ?

Same idea, different picture on the button.
On the packaging it does say that its compatible with XP, Vista and Mac.
I was assuming that since it was Vista capable that Win7 would not be a problem, but I get the "Device may not work properly" message.

The, "Ignore Once" button has been replaced with the, "Undo Edit" button in the Spell Check dialog box in MS Office 2007. How do I get this back to the original format?

Answer:Ignore Once Button is replaced with Undo Edit Button in Spell Check.

I am also having this problem in Office 2003 in Vista. I have seen this question asked all over the internet, for office 2007 and 2003 in XP and Vista, different computers, etc. Does anyone have an answer?

I have a Satellite P200. Recently the problem has arisen that my Internet button pushes itself so multiple Firefox windows start popping up at random intervals. Sometimes it's 2, sometimes it's 30. Needless to say it's quite annoying.

I found where I can customize the buttons and make the Internet button open a different program, but there doesn't seem to be an option to completely disable it. If I "Deregister" the Internet button, then it just goes back to the default function of opening an internet browser when it's pushed.

Is there a way to fully disable these keys?

Thanks!
Jason

Answer:Satellite P200 - Disabling Internet Special Button near Power Button

Hello

I have the same notebook model and disabling option is not known to me. What you can try is to remove ?Button support? utility from Value Added Package.

In Control Panel you will find option ?Programmes and Features?. Click to remove VAP. Usually it should ask you to change the installation and you can choose which part of this package can be deleted, if not remove VAP completely.

Download the latest option from Toshiba download page but when the installations starts choose Custom installation and remove check mark in front of ?Button support? utility.

So at the moment I see this as only possible solution.

Hi

In the last day the laptop has been slowing down, gradually. from being longer in start up to sluggish with getting to web pages, to be slow when i clicked for the browser to open.

In the last half day I have only been able to do anything in safe mode as after around three clicks into the browser eventually opening the system would FREEZE.

This morning I tried downloading Java and it refused so I tried running AVG however it kept repeating an error - Error 0xe0010053 and stopped.
I googled the error and came across

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic481812.html

and there was also a suggestion to get hijackthis and get a scan which would be helpful, it was generally reported in quite a few places (unrelated sites etc), to those in the know ...I got hijackthis and did a scan
I also ran a malwarebytes scan.

I ran the DDS scan as asked on this site.

Below are the DDS scan and the hijackthis scan and I have attached the Attach file

This is the DDS scan report

Update: Found the fix was already posted to the forum.  Just had to re-install Natural Touch.  Thanks!  Hello, I lost functionality of the Natural Touch button (the top button above the manual screen rotation button) on the left side of the screen.  I would like to get that button working again. I'm not sure when this happened as I only pressed the button when I initially bought the unit.  However, I think it may have happened after I upgraded from Windows 7 Starter to Windows 7 Professional. Thanks for your help!

Man this feels weird. I'm usually the one giving help, not asking for it lol.

Computer:

HP Pavilion dv7
Win7 Professional x64

This problem started after I left my computer on sleep for a couple hours. When I woke it up, the touchpad taps and left mouse button clicks brought up the right-click context menu and nothing on the taskbar responded to the cursor hovering over it. Also for some reason pressing the Windows key on the keyboard wouldn't bring up the Start menu. The only way I've found to correct this is to plug in a USB mouse and press the right MB on it. I also was able to fix it one time by uninstalling the Synaptics drivers and letting Windows restart and find the mouse, but after trying to reinstall the Synaptics drivers then uninstalling them again after the problem reappeared this method no longer works. In either case left click functionality is restored but there is no right click functionality period on the touchpad/buttons. However the USB mouse that I plug in works normally. Also after left click is restored, everything on the taskbar and elsewhere responds as it should with the exception of not being able to right click on anything (which sucks in W7). I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Synaptics drivers to see if that would fix it but after reinstalling them and restarting, the problem came back. Another thing I've noticed is that even with the Synaptics drivers installed the vertical scroll area doesn't respond.... Read more

On my L420, i had it set so i can move the mouse with my thumb and scroll with my index finger with the center trackpoint button.

However, the Ultranav options are different for the W541, so, (as far as i can tell) i can't find the option to replicate this.

See screenshots of my configuration.

Basically, i want my center trackpoint button to be always in "scroll" mode, without the need to press the middle button and scroll like on the L420.

I have a G580 where if I press the power button to turn it on the fans stay and the owe and webcam LEDs come on, but the screen stays off. I shined a flashlight on it and theres no picture at all. No sounds either, except for when I plug in or unplug the power, then it makes the beep. That beep is disabled in the bios settings though, shouldn't be happening! If I press and hold the onekey rescue button though the screen comes on fine and give me it's menu. Hi,
In reference to the following posting, http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19676126:
I am not the individual who initiated this query but I did have the same issue with my Dell Inspiron 5547, where it wouldn't turn on after a power button shut down.
I followed Hema's instructions by removing the battery and charger and then holding down the power button for a few seconds, and then putting back the parts. It seemed to have done the trick... At least for now. Is this just a temporary fix?
While doing a Google search for a solution I seem to have encountered a number of people who experienced the same issue. Can you also explain why this happens with this particular Dell laptop? Is it a model flaw?
Thank you

I have a Y530 laptop.  It originally came with Windows Vista.  I upgraded it to Windows 7 several months ago.  Lately the laptop will not come on using the power button. I have tried all the suggested remedies -- remove the battery, remove the power cord, hold the power button down for 15 seconds, reinstall the battery, reinstall the power cord.  It still will not come on using the power button. I find that if I press the "One Key" -- the key above the power button, the laptop comes on but goes to the Recovery page.  I tried doing a recovery one time, but was presented with a screen telling me there was an error with some files during the recovery.  I can understand this since I'm sure the recovery partition was designed for Windows Vista and things do not work correctly since the computer is now running Windows 7. The next time I turned the computer on using the "One Key" -- the power button still does not work -- I skipped the recovery and had the computer reboot instead.  The computer booted into Windows 7 and worked fine. This is not the ideal situation when I want to boot the computer.  I do not want to have to go to the recovery screen and reboot from there. Is there any way to get my computer to respond to the power button again? Thank you for your help, Dan Wilkinson

I can't get further and further into to programs (ex. open outlook, open an email, send a response) but then I can't exit. Is it an 830 by any chance? With a screen protector? It is a known issue that the capacitive buttons on 830 lack sensitivity and a screen protector may block their use.

We had a power outage earlier this week which shut down my PC. Upon restart, the 'normal' error screen that 'Windows encountered an error and didn't shutdown correctly' (Safe Mode screen) never appeared and it seemed to boot normally.

Ever since, even after a couple of normal restarts, every so often the Start button and Action center notification button lose all functionality (left mouse click does absolutely nothing/right click brings up limited menu).

I finished a 'SFC /SCANNOW' option which said that it found some corrupted files and repaired them but I'm wondering if it actually fixed the issue since I figure that a corrupt file would prevent an action all the time, not sporadic.

Anyone heard of this?

EDIT:
I forgot to mention I'm running Win 10 Pro 64-bit. I have done an upgrade and not a clean install because I have a lot of programs installed and don't want to re-install all of them. But this issue has just happened.

I think I have a faulty X230T, there are now only three tablet buttons and the middle does not do anything. I have installed 7wg737.exe (tablet short menu for Win7), but it does nothing. When I go into Tablet PC setting>buttons, only one button shows up and that's the screen rotation button.  Is there a way to assign the middle button to shortcut menu? Otherwise I'm unable to change brightness or volumn during tablet mode which would make this tablet unusable.

Does anyone know how i can turn the Illumination on/off button into a mute button?
I have a Toshiba Satellite A500-19W laptop, with win 7 installed.

I have 8 touch buttons as usual (eco, CD/DVD, play, previous, next, illumination, and sound - and +)
The illumination button controls all LEDs on the laptop and I find it useless. Is there a way I can turn it into mute button?

I found a way to control it through toshiba assistant -> optimize -> button support, but I dunno what data to enter there.
When I choose illumination on/off button under button name, I have to fill the description, option and target path field for the mute option. Any idea what should be entered in those fields?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite A500-19W: How can I turn illumination button into mute button?

To be honest I think it is very useful option because in some certain situation you can enable/disable illumination very quickly and not start several tools for doing this.
Please note that you can use MUTE option very quickly using FN+ESC key combination.

Anyway, I?ve experienced follow:
After clean Value Added Package installation I pressed illumination button for the first time and I got small window with message ? Toshiba Button Assignment Tool ? The button you pressed has not been configured.
I?ve defined my favourite option and got next window with
+?Are you sure that you want to set the button for this function? Once you set the button, you cannot change it, unless you reinstall Toshiba Button Support?.+

So I think you know what you should do now and try to change it.

All of a sudden the Windows Start Button turns brown (not blue) and when I left click on it something is said about having to sign out and a critical error. Clicking that button, which you have to do to get rid of the dialogue box, restarts the OS and it happens again if you left click the Start Button.

Also, Microsoft Edge, which used to be on the bottom row, is now gone.

I tried to reinstall Windows 10, but got to a point where the setup crashed, so I am stuck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Whenever I press the start menu button at the bottom left corner, the menu does not pop up so I can not use any of my apps. Same with the volume button. Whenever I press it, the horizontal rectangle volume control does not appear so I have to right click to change my volume. What can I do to fix it?

Answer:(Win 10) My start menu button and volume control button isn't working

There are many many posts here about start menu, taskbar ion problems.. feel free to search (search box above).
Extraordinarily long thread here:
Taskbar/Start button not working! - Windows 10 Forums

If your start menu fails to appear, try this:
http://www.urtech.ca/2015/05/solved-...-not-function/
But do not try option 4 - powershell command- as this has been broken and will break apps since last November.

You can check for conflicting programs by trying a clean boot.

If no joy, I suggest you just go straight for an In-place upgrade repair install.

An In-place upgrade repair install will fix many things, but not those where the settings are not changed by the procedure.

For this you need an installation medium with the same base build as you have installed.
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums
This will refresh Windows, after the manner of a Windows installation.
- all/most associations will be unchanged
- all your programs will be left installed
- you will lose any custom fonts
- you will lose any customised system icons
- you may need to re-establish your Wi-Fi connection
- you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build you have used for the repair install
- Windows.old will be created
- system restore will be turned off- you should turn it on again and I recommend you manually schedule a daily restore point.
- you will need to redo any language downloads including the display language if you changed that)

After a bit of experimentation on my new Satellite L750 they only work when you turn the NUMLOCK light on.

Don't try to use shift to get '.' it just bleeps at me when not in NUMLOCK. However pressing shift '.' while in NUMLOCK gives you the alternate combination for that key which is DEL.

Bashing the combination of keys you suggest can produce all kinds of spurious key results.

First off I'd like to say that I didn't really know where to post this and the last time I googled a similar result it was posted here, and it could potentially be a driver problem I guess, so please excuse me if this is the wrong section. I found these forums while searching the answer to my problem and the people seemed generous and helpful so I thought this would be a good place to ask.

Okay so I've googled and googled for hours to absolutely no avail, so I've tried everything I could think of without asking myself so here goes.

Let me start by stating my specific problem. My laptop will not wake up from sleep without hitting the power button. This means that my external keyboard, external mouse, touchpad, nor built in keyboard can wake it up. My old laptop also running Windows 7 did not have this problem btw. It is quite the annoyance because when I am at home I use my laptop at a desk with an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor.
Just bought this new laptop for graduation. It's a RF711-S02 by Samsung. I'll state some of the specs that could possibly be causing my problem. Processor is an Intel i7 2630qm, nVidia gt540m graphics card (which uses optimus technology, so when that's not on it uses Intel HD 3000), Windows 7 x64. If anything else is needed or relevant, just ask.

I have tried everything I could possibly find over several days and several hours in each day. I've tried the USBBIOSX stuff for the registry, updating all of my drivers, enabling my keyboard to wak... Read more

Answer:Laptop Won't Come Out of Sleep W/O Power Button

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

This workaround did the trick in Windows Vista so I'll post the link to see if it's of any help to you, it may work with Win 7: Disable Hybrid Sleep Mode in Windows Vista - How-To Geek

Have you tried tweaking your power plans, or switching them off, even? Disable Power Management on Windows 7 or Vista - How-To Geek

Another workaround that has worked for my wife's laptop is to unplug the power cord, remove the battery and hold down the power button for 30-60 seconds to drain the internal capacitors then insert the battery and restart.

Do you have Hibernation on your laptop? If so, you might want to disable it and just use Sleep.

I set my Dell Inspiron laptop (Windows 8) to sleep after 15 minutes (never to hibernate) whether on AC power or battery.
This allows me to take out my laptop from my bag, open the lid, enter my pin and get to work quickly.
One thing that baffles me is that when on AC power, I have to press the power button to "wake" the laptop out of sleep
instead of just pressing a key on the keyboard. The power button is this tiny chicklet metal button that is awkward to press.
Any way to set Windows 8 to wake on keypress when on AC power?

Hello. I have a laptop and a desktop computers, both running Windows 7 Pro x64. On laptop, I can set the sleep button to Shut Down (I guess, I don't have the laptop here now so I cannot confirm). I would like to set the DESKTOP computer's sleep button action
to Shut Down, but this option is not available (I have disabled hibernation, so sleep is the only option in advanced power settings -> sleep button action for me). I don't have a Power button on my keyboard nor on the remote control,
only Sleep buttons and I do not want to use S1 nor S3. I want the computer to shut down when I press these buttons. Is there a way? Registry etc?
Thank you in advance for your kind replies.

I'm running Win8 Pro 64 bit on a Dell Precision 490 desktop. I upgraded from XP so it was basically a clean install.

I have my power button configured to put the system to sleep and it will do that ONCE after I turn it on. After that, pushing the power button does nothing until the next reboot or power cycle. Going to Charms -> Settings -> Power -> Sleep always works.

This obviously isn't a critical problem, but it's really annoying because I'm in the habit of hitting the power button and usually it just doesn't work. Has anyone heard of this problem? Is there a fix?

Things I've tried:
- searching Google - can't find the needle in the haystack
- searching this forum - nothing that matches
- checking the Event Log - nothing interesting or suspicious
- apply all Microsoft updates - no change
- disable my Comodo Internet Security - no change
- change power options and then change them back - no change
- checked if I could stop and restart the power service - nope

Does anyone have any other ideas that I could try or tools to track what's going on?

Thanks,
Ed

I have a X1 Carbon and pressing the power button does not make the computer sleep - although in the Power Options the computer is set to "Sleep" when the power button is pressed on battery or A/C.  not sure what's going on, and I didn't see other users with this problem.  Thanks!

Answer:X1 Carbon won't sleep from power button

which version of the X1 Carbon do you have, and what OS?

So I've had my Nokia Lumia 925 since December 2013 and it's been fine but recently its been acting up...
My headphone jack stopped working, my volume down button doesn't work 100%, and now my power button isn't working whatsoever!!
Any suggestions are much appreciated! I really want to keep using WPs!

Answer:My Power/Sleep button isn't working?

Should still be within the 1 year manufacturers warranty. I'd suggest taking back to the place of purchase or contacting Nokia directly.

New TP X230, running Win 8 Pro (clean install).I have power options set to "Do Nothing" if the lid is closed, but to put the unit to sleep if I press the Power or Sleep button. (I don't know that the computer has a sleep button, so here I am referring to the power button.)The power button works to turn the unit on, including to wake it from sleep. (So I don't think there is a hardware problem with it.)But with the computer running, if I press the sleep button nothing happens at all, although I have it set to put the computer to sleep. What might be going wrong?  (And is there a sleep button?)

Answer:Power Button won't put my X230 to Sleep!

Hi, maiki

Yes, there is a sleep button. Depending on the behavior of your Fn keys, then you will either press Fn + F4 or simply F4 to put the machine to sleep. I would try to create a new power plan and have the same settings to see if you can get the proper power button behavior.

Hope it helps,
Adam

Hi, I refer to the trackpoint properties in cpanel -> mouse -> ultranav tab -> trackpoint pane -> settings -> choose scrolling or magnifying glass function. When this is set to scrolling I can hold down the middle button and move the trackpoint to emulate scrolling which is very useful. But I can't middle click. When I set this to neither obvious I can middle click but I can't scroll. I'm just wondering if it is possible to enable both of these functionalitites simultaneously?

Answer:enabling both middle-button scrolling AND third-button click

tell me  how would your computer know whether you wanted it to perform a click or a scroll?  thats why there has to be two buttons for two things incidentally, if you have it set to scrollling, it WILL click on links! it will also open anew tab for the link, or shut a tab, in firefox, if you click on the tab bar with it  it seems to be a scroller on things that can scroll, and a clicker on things that can click    works for me anyways!  other than that, if you can only handle one mouse button go buy yourself a mac! ....only joking!

I know this is possible, because I've done it before (a long time ago). How do I change which browser comes up when pressing the web browser button that's to the right of the power button?  Google doesn't have an answer.

Hey Peregrin72,  Great question! You could first try changing your default Internet Browser setting in Windows.  1. Click the Start button 2. Type 'default'3. Click Default Programs4. Click Set Your Default Programs5. Click on the desired browser and then click Set this program as default.  Let me know the results of that change. There is also a registry change that may help.

I recently replaced the hard disk in my Yoga2 with an SSD - it is not yet formatted. The plan is to boot from a USB stick that I prepared as a Windows 8 recovery medium - but first I need to get into the BIOS to turn on legacy booting. In the past, I was always able to get into the BIOS wih the Novo button, but ever since I replaced the hard disk, the Novo button acts as a power button and gives me the message "No bootable device found". How do I get into the BIOS?

Answer:Yoga2 11 - Novo button acts as power button

Just press F2 (repeatedly) at boot time.

Toshiba Satellite w/53G HD available. Running Vista Home Premium, Firefox, Thunderbird, Open Office Suite.

When several programs are running with multiple browser windows open, the task bar is not accessible. Mouse over results in the hourglass appearing. I can minimize open windows and open a program off the desktop.

I suspect it is a memory issue. Suggestions?

Answer:Task bar/start button/Windows button not accessible

while this is occurring press Ctrl. +Alt. + Del. and go to the performance tab, how much of the CPU and RAM is getting utilized?

Also, how much RAM is installed in your system?

Hi all,I've bought a lenovo ideacenter b320 a week ago and everything works fine except the tiny LCD button on the bottom right corner of the computer frame. Normally when I touch it there should be three more buttons pop up next to it but now when I touch it nothing shows up, it is like the button froze or not working at all. I don't really know what to do. Another question is how does the dynamic brightness system work? Do I have to tick any boxes in the program to activate it?Any helps would be appreciated.Cheers

Answer:Lenovo B320 LCD button (Screen setting button)

I don't see any changes on my screen with the dynamic brightness control at all. What do I need to do for the program to automatically adjust the screen brightness or it has to do with the LCD button I mentioned earlier?Cheers

I updated to windows 10, 2 weeks ago and have had no problems until last night. I've restarted my computer and tried everything I could think of to fix it, but nothing has worked.

Answer:My start button, search bar, or my new notification button won't work?,

hmmm, sounds like registry fault... happened to my dads pc win 10 installation after trying to change C/Users/Username paths to another Username folder. Try this sfc /scannow in admin Cmd prompt. Try this windows+r type netplwiz, go to properties and compare username with your username path in c/users/username. If they don't match that's the problem, they need to match! Restart Pc and start, search etc will work. Download Malwarebytes and scan. If not open system restore and restore PC to an earlier point. But I guess you're using some cleaning utility like CC cleaner and so on... Uninstall that, it causes some serious issues, and breaks more stuff than fixes. And for last resort do a clean win 10 install. :D

Hi, I'm new to the forum, and fairly new to Windows 8, which I've been using from the desktop as I can't get on with the Start menu and its tiles. Not using Start8. Anyway, I was using the desktop taskbar with its Start button and Show desktop button and today they have both disappeared. How can I get them back?
