[resolved] Limited account can't move / edit external HDD files

Question: [resolved] Limited account can't move / edit external HDD files

Hi,

I'm running XP Home SP2, with a limited account which was originally an administrator account when the PC was first set up. At that time, I installed an external HDD. I have now changed the account to a Limited Account, and can no longer move / edit files on the external HDD. I just get a message saying "Access is Denied" whenever I try to do anything. Anyone got any ideas why this might be happening? Anything to try would be great! :)

Thanks,
h

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: [resolved] Limited account can't move / edit external HDD files

When you start your computer press f8 repeatedly untill a menu pops up, select safe mode, and logon as the Administrator. Go to start, control panel, user accounts, and change your user to an administrator. Or use the administrator account to move files if you want to keep your account limited.

I use a limited account for my main system but after restarting can't edit settings in Emsisoft Ant-Malware anymore. How do I go about doing this without having to login to my Admin account? I know the password I just prefer not to sign out and sign in to it. Unless I have to.

Thanks.

Hi
I used to load my computer and i could see 2 user account mine as an administrator and my wife as an administrator and I would start from there without any password protected. Now the babysitter without my consent and i don't know what she did but now i have to log on to window with a password and this is ok but i didn't have to do it before. After when i go to try to change user account under control panel I cannot pick a task and ( like adding a new user account or change limited to administrator) only have 1 user account and its a limited one. So what can i do so that i can have administrator account again. I know that I can see my old account when i go to tools/computer management/local user and group/user i can see my old account and my wife too but don't know how too or if i can restore them. Please help me and I hope i explained it properly .

Thanks

Answer:[RESOLVED] Now i only have limited user account

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Boot into Safe Mode as Administrator and change your account back to admin.

You might then want to use system restore to a date before she used the pc. Then you want to put in place a password on both your accounts so she cannot access your computer. You might want to enable the guest account and make her/him use that or you may end up in a heep of trouble when she/he returns.

I have Windows XP Pro, sp 2.

I'm experimenting in Windows now with limited accounts. All I know about Windows is with an administrators account but I've learned that limited accounts are just that, limited.

I'm in the account "Fitch", which is limited. If I wanted to install software or do certain other things in this account, I can only see that I'd have to log out of this account, log into an administrators account and change the account that I want to modify to an administrators account. And then make the modifications.

Is this correct or is there an easier way?

Thanks

Answer:How to add files in a limited account

While in a limited account, you can right click on the file you want to run and choose Run As...enter the admin user name and password and it should run.

I finally had to make a different user account on our Windows 8.1 computer for the business. With all of our personal and business stuff intermingled it's just getting hard to find anything. So I set up a new user account, and now I want to move some stuff to the other account. Here's a list of the things I'd like to move:
Bookmarks from Firefox
Files from My Documents
Pictures from My Pictures
Files from the Desktop
Is this something I can easily drag/drop somehow? Because I don't want to switch accounts back and forth and use a tiny thumb drive to move all that stuff over if I can possibly help it. After they are moved over, I don't want/need them to be accessible from my account anymore either.

Also, I'd like to delete the shortcuts for the games we have loaded on my account (the administrator) from the business account to clean up the desktop for things that we actually need on that account. (This is part of what finally made me decide that we needed a new account!)

Thanks!

Answer:Move files to a different user account

Yes, just go to the C drive, then to Users, then to the account you want to copy the files from open it and cut and paste the files you want. If you have passwords on the accounts you will need to take ownership first I believe: http://www.intowindows.com/take-ownership-of-files-and-folders-in-windows-8/

Or just cut and paste the files from the old account into a folder on the C drive, then log into the new account and cut and paste them to where you want them to be on the new account.

Definitely would never use a USB drive for moving files between account on the same computer.

Hello. I want to add a compressed file(preferably free so I choose 7zip...) to my external HD, I am not sure right now whether I just want to "store" or "compress".

I wonder if there are any risks of file corruptions on my external HD.

Does compressing increase the risk? Based on my experiences I have come across many compressed archives that corrupted over time.
Thank you!

Answer:Compressing files to move to External HD

what are you going to compress? What did you use to compress the files that got corrupted over time?

afaik, archives are just a file like another, so they have the same chances of getting corrupted of any other file. I have plenty of compressed files, and none got corrupted in nearly a decade.

I'm a fan of Peazip as it has a better interface than 7zip.

Hey, I have a Lacie external drive of 500GB total space. It has around 468 GB of free space still available. However, I am unable to move a certain file from my internal hard drive. It is a .ISO file at roughly 4.5 GB. Any time I try, an error pops up claiming that the hard drive does not have enough space. I can move smaller files (100 MBs for instance) without any issues.

Help is appreciated.

Answer:Cannot move large files into External Drive

Is your external drive formatted in FAT32 by chance? If so then that would be why small files work and large ones do not, with FAT32 the file size is limited to just under 4GB.

You'd need to reformat or convert the file system to NTFS on the external drive to allow it to store files 4GB and larger.

Answer:Move backup files from external HDD to new Win 8 laptop

Was this a manual or automatic backup? What is the operating system on your old laptop? Was it just your own files (pictures, docs, sound, videos etc)?If so they can simply be copy/pasted over, using Ctrl+A keys to copy over complete blocks of files. Other keys can be useful too.Programs will have to be re-installed.We need more information to give a useful and detailed answer.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I have a Western Digital USB 160GB External Hard drive attached to my system for storing music albums on. I copy them over using Media Player 10 and scan the sleeve and use this as the thumbnail. I store these ablums in folders A through Z. However, quite often I find that when accessing this drive that some of the files have moved back to the root folder of this "J" drive (where they were originally copied to before sorting them)for no reason. Also, very often, the thumbnail associated to some albums has been replaced by the windows default picture. Anyone point to what is causing this. The file attributes to each folder (Read Only and Hidden) are not checked. Thanks in advanceM Wilding

Ok hopefully someone smarter than me can help me out:

Problem: I have a game image file I want to transfer to my external hard drive. When I try to transfer it it says my external drive is full. I have about 70 gigs of free space on the drive and the image file is 5 gigs.

I've tried to transfer them to 2 different external drives and both say the same thing, "Drive is full... blah blah blah." My friend has the same image file on his comp so I tried to transfer it to my external drive from HIS computer and same problem.

This leads me to believe the problem lies in the image file. .MDS files and .ISO files won't transfer for some reason. I've tried transferring other files of the same size (about 6 gigs) and they transfer fine.

All drives have been defragmented and error checked. Any ideas??

Thanks for your help!! If you solve my problem I'll take you out for a big steak dinner if you come to Canada. Thanks!!!!

Answer:Can't move my image files to external hard drive!!!

I'm going to guess the hard disk is formatted FAT32 and not NTFS. This limits file sizes to 4gigs, anything larger will result in such an error. You need to convert the drive to NTFS for this to work.

Start, Run, CMD

CONVERT x: /FS/NTFS /X

where x: is the drive letter of the external drive.

I have been moving some DVD's (iso and avi files) from my hard drive (C) to an external hard drive (I). At this point I have 45.8 GB of free space on my Hard Drive (C) and I have 62.1 GB of free space on my external hard drive (I).

Every time I try to cut a file from (C) and paste it to (I), I get a message: "cannot copy_____: there is not enough free disc space. Delete one or more files to free disk space and then try again." Generally each of these files I want to move is about 4.4GB. There would appear to be ample space on both the sending and receiving drive to handle 4.4 GB. But what do I know.

I have done disk cleanup, and even used Revo Uninstaller to clean out all temporary files, cookies, Remnants, and my recycle bin.

What do I need to do to cut and paste (or otherwise transfer) the files from (C) to (I)?

Thank you in advance. TSF people have always been able to help me on a timely basis.

Hello,
I currently have a computer that will not properly boot, so I was wondering if there was a way to move all the files from my current hard drive to an external hard drive, then format the hard drive on the computer and reload the files I know are "clean" or would my only option be to buy a new hard drive, install windows xp on it, and then move the files from the old hard drive to the new one?

Thanks.

Hello All:

I installed an Archer C2600 router and connected to one of its USB3 slots an external USB3 hard drive and thought I gave all users permission to read/write all files on the external HDD.

Recently, I had to do a clean install of Windows 10 and since then, I have not been able to do the following:

(1) start portable apps that are saved on the external HDD;

(2) when downloading anything with a browser (usually Firefox, but also Edge and IE), I cannot save the downloaded file/executable/etc. straight to the external HDD; and

(3) I cannot cut and paste files/folders from an internal HDD to the external HDD.

Regarding No. 3, Explorer just continues to show 0% complete and when I go to cancel the transfer, the already open dialogue box indicates it is canceling, but never stops "Canceling[.]"

Q: Can anyone help me trouble shoot what the problem might be?

Thank you,
edsager

Answer:After Clean Win 10 install, no longer move/save files to external HDD

Update: I found and updated the firmware and until I restarted my computer (with Microsoft updates updating during the restart), all was working just fine. Sheesh.

I have also tried to use TeraCopy but I keep getting the same error found in one of the above images: "The request is not supported."

Thank you for your time,

Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me.

As the title says my external hard drive wont allow me to move/copy my files back to my laptop. its a Seagate 500GB external hard drive which I have owed for a few years now with not as much use as id like. I can view photos and other files play videos and music off it but when I go to move a file over to the desktop it pops up with a windows explorer tab showing it has stopped working. which is weird as it has nothing to do with windows explorer then it seems to reload the main screen. I've attached a video showing the problem in the hope someone can diagnose the issue. I did just manage to send a photo and a music file using email back to my computer from the hard drive so its not impossible to get them all back but that would take forever haha. Any help I really would appreciate it and promise once fixed IL use a online cloud service as I know hard drives don't last forever.

it seems I cant upload the video which is annoying as it would make it easier for people to work out the problem.

HARD DRIVE DOESNT SEEM TO BE THE ISSUE!!

sorry I thought this was down to just the hard drive but I've just tried copying a file on the desktop screen and then pasting the copied file onto the desktop screen and it seems the issue is happening with the laptop same problem with the windows explorer tab popping up with the message windows explorer has stopped working followed with another message saying windows explorer is restartin... Hi! I do not know when and why did this happen but whoever invented this paranoid (hidemysecretsfrommywife) control system of sharing and permissions should be declared as the Enemy of Mankind, or the Antichrist!
I can understand that one wants to protect C: from malwares. But have you seen a malware attacking an external drive???

I have Windows7, I have an external drive where I store all my pictures taken and my music files. I already tried everything advanced sharing and so on. Still: I can only create a new folder with a right click in the drive or inside existing folders but I can not do anything else. The disk is write protected, check write permissions.
In fact, the disk isn't write protected.

If I create a new folder, I can put in it and do whatever I want inside the new folder. But I have no permission to do anything outside a new folder, i.e. with my original media files!

Why? Who does benefit from this? What is this craziness???

Answer:[SOLVED] No permission to create/ move, copy, delete files in external hard drive

Hi akofalvi.

Try this:

1. Start > Run "cmd" (this opens a command prompt window)
2. type--> diskpart (this will open another command window in a few seconds)
3. type--> list volume (this will list all of the volumes currently recognized in your system)
4. type--> select volume # (this number is going to be your external drive)
5. type--> attributes disk clear readonly

I will say this: this procedure has been met with mixed results and your problem may return. Some have even had this issue and it turned out to be a setting in Windows Media Player of all things (whoda thunk?) One responder in a forum had this to say about this very problem: what i found to fix this was to remove the settings in media player allowing it to re-organize and rename files, after which i went to the tools/advanced/restore media library and allowed it to dump my current library and reset it. That's just an FYI.

I hope that'll help. Let me know.

Good day!

Mike

PS: As an afterthought, you may need to log in to the REAL administrator account (which needs to be activated manually) and set your permissions there for your regular user name. We'll go down that path if the above procedure doesn't net you anything positive.

Hello everybody,

I have realized that all the laptops I installed Windows 10 in the last year (several family laptops) are running with Microsoft-Accounts which are Admin-Accounts. Now I read that this is a serious security issue. I would like to change these MS-Admin-Accounts into MS-Limited-User-Accounts?

But how?

And next question: Should I set up for every laptop then a local admin-account?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Answer:Windows 10: How change account from admin into limited user account?

As long as you have not disabled UAC, User Account Control, or invoked the hidden full administrator, then your users are actually running as standard users and will be prompted before performing any Admin level tasks - you can if you wish create a standard user on each of the systems in addition to the administrator, but this will not provide much better security and is likely to generate complaints from the users as they will have to set-up the accounts again to how they want them.

Hi,
In our company, there are few computers where we can access only limited user accounts. I went to control panel >> user accounts >>...it shows the only limited user account name like "xyz". It doesn't show us any administrator account names, why is it so? And how I can make it happen in my personal computer?

Answer:xp shows only limited account name in user account control panel

Because you are logged in as a Limited User, so you can't make changes to the computer. Speak with your Network Administrator at your company.
At the log in screen hit CTRL+ALT+DEL 3 times fast. This will give you the traditional Windows Log In Screen. If you have the Built In Administrator accounts password, you can log in as Administrator and create a new Admin user account.

I just realized that I am unable to access my other users accounts (which are limited) desktops. I use documents and settings folder to get there, but I get this error:

"C:\Documents and Setting\Natalie and Dave\Desktop

Access is denied."

I can access the other limited account, but just not "Natalie and Dave's" desktop. I don't know why either, I am the only administrator account and I am able to access one of two limited accounts desktop.

Is there anything I can do, besides removing the account? Thanks!

Answer:Administrator account unable to access limited account's desktop?

You can try taking ownership if you're really an administrator.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
I don't know what effect that will have when Natalie and Dave try to log in though (if they'll have permission to access their own Desktop that is).
The other possibility is corruption in the file system. If that's the case, run chkdsk /f from the command line (click start, (all) programs, accessories, command prompt, and type chkdsk /f press y and then reboot). When it reboots it will run the disk check, then reboot again. You can see the results of the chkdsk in your event viewer. (control panel (classic view), administrative tools, event viewer, application log, and look for events named winlogon).

Hi guys, just the title of the thread pretty much says it all.
want to create a really limited user account for the kids of the house. I already have a user account, and have tried to set up a limited one through control panel. But that asks me to first create an Administer Account, which i already have. So it would be pointless if i had two Administer Accounts showing up on the welcome screen.
Also i'm kind of a novice at this, but i am keen to learn. so help with privacy and parental control would be appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:How do I move my email with all my runs from a GMAIL account to a OUTLOOK.COM account?

Hi... I think we need more details. Could you join the site so you can reply in this thread?
What App was used to capture the runs? What device did the tracking?
Where are you trying to view the runs? What output (Google Maps, App "X", printout maps)???
On the surface it looks like you are asking about an email... Which you could forward. I think what you really want is how to move a service to a new email address as the reporting default without loosing all your stored data, yes?
So more details are critical.

My son is a gamer. I installed 'Call of Duty 2' from my account, and it shows up on my sons desktop, but he can ONLY play it on MY desktop! I know it has to do with administrator access, but what the hell? One can only play games/online games on Windows XP if he/she is a System Admin?!
Is there a way to modify my sons account so that he can play this game on his own desktop?

I tried background check on the machine to check it for possible malware or virus infection but couldn't find anything.
could it be the user profile settings getting changed athomatically due several usages or could it be log file getting full or needs to be cleared?
so much in need for help

Answer:admin account gets downgraded to limited user account

possibly because that comp didnt come with Ultimate and when it re-activates, it uses the true Admin account and resets the others.

Since this a security forum, I thought it would be nice to see how many of our members bother creating a Standard User Account or simply use the default Admin User Account.

Anyone is free to explain their own reasoning for choosing a type of account if he/she wants to.

Currently I use a Standard User Account. Decided to try one a few days ago, and so far I like it. I don't find it that much annoying or bothersome(so far)

Hi peopleI'm new... just found this site and hope I'm posting in the correct place.I set up my pc so I am administrator and my daughter is a Limited user.... I recently bought an old used PC (Dell XPS Gen. 2 ? Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, 2 GB RAM), installed my 1 TB SATA hard drive and a new install of Windows XP SP3. I?ve also got an IDE hard drive in there with lots of media files on it. I?ve been trying to copy or move files from an external USB hard drive to the IDE drive, but nearly every time I try to do so, Windows Explorer (or Q-Dir) will lock up, with the progress bar showing very little progress. I have been able to copy a few small files successfully, but anything else seems to crash it. I?ve checked for DMA/PIO status and have found that it has reverted to PIO several times, and I?ve deleted the primary IDE channel in device manager so that it would reinstall with DMA mode. The problem persists. My device manager shows two primary IDE channels and one secondary IDE channel. I have the 1 SATA hard drive, 1 IDE hard drive, and 1 SATA DVD burner installed.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi all.

I am using Windows XP Media Center Edition and I would like to use my current account as a Limited user account.

I realise that I will need at least one administrator account on my PC -- so I go into user accounts, create a new administrator account, then I try to change my current account to a limited account, but it will not let me!

See the screenshots;

I would like Admin to be administrator, and Dell07 to be Limited... I do not have the option to change Dell07 to limited for some strange reason.

I have managed to do this on my parents PC easily. I simply created another Administrator account, then changed their account to a limited one. I don't understand why this will not work on Windows XP MCE...

Any idea why this is happening?!

Answer:Help change my account to a limited user account!

You should log-on to the administrator account thru safe mode and this will allow you to change the account you want to so it will be a low-admin account. You can not change the account you are logged into t anything other than the account it is because it is the active account.

Hello everyone. I'm new here and this will be my first post on here. I'm sorry if I have started this post in a wrong thread. I'm unsure of where it should go. Anyways, I'm not a tech expert so that's why I here. I will try my best to describe my problem tho.

First of all, I have been having this problem since last week. The problem is that it just auto shut down on me without any warning.

I thought it was because its overheating/the cpu reached it limits hence why it auto shut, but thats probably not the case.

And since that happened I just thought to myself that I should just reinstall windows. Haha. I thought that would solve my problem. But it didn't.

This crash problem occured when I opened game. I also realised that it happen as well when I browse the internet using firefox. Like after I opened it for a few minutes it then shut down.

However, if I'm not opening anything else and just at the desktop and only transferring files for hours, the crash never happen unlike after I rebooted, went to firefox, then googling stuff and then poof, it crashed. I also checked the cpu too, but its not overworking itself. Its just chilling.... Oh, and I checked it from task manager.

I already tried uninstalling the nvidia drivers and went to surf the internet afterward. No crashes at all. I could watch youtube as well without having it crash on me. But when I reinstalled the driver back. It happened again.

So... I don't know really wha... Read more

My kid uses Guest Account in Windows 8.1. The Family Safety seems unable to apply to the Guest Account, right? So I have to create another account with the Family Safety applied. But, my kid does not want to lose all game data in the Guest Account. How to move all the data from the Guest Account to another account so that my kid can play the game from the new account without losing anything? Thank you for your answer.

Answer:How to move data from Guest Account to another Account?

I have moved data from one account to another several times. Most of the time, it goes really well! However, finding, identifying [safe to move], copying and/or moving folders' files from guest to a standard account is very geeky! If you are not properly geeky, it can go really not well at all. I recommend copying the files from folders, I do not recommend trying to move folders. How geeky, how skilled, do you regard yourself concerning Explorer [which was once called File Manager back when Fred Flintstone used windows]?

I'm trying to fix my girlfriend's Windows 7 laptop after she had a virus/malware infection. I'm pretty sure we've successfully cleared the virus (an updated/full scan with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware in safe mode comes up clean). However, we have had no Internet access since the infection. The wireless router/connection itself is fine (I connect to it daily with my laptop, as I am to write this post) but her laptop won't connect to it, we can't browse any web pages.

I may have made the problem worse in trying to resolve it. I stupidly followed the advice on a forum for some registry edits for Windows XP--deleting WinSock and WinSock2 from the registry and then restarting the computer in hopes they'd re-register themselves. Unfortunately, WinSock2 re-appeared but WinSock did not. I'm wondering if this has created a new problem (or compounded the problems we were already having).

In diagnostics, we currently get the following report: "Wireless Network Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration." I just ran an ipconfig in the command prompt and got the following results:

Moved from Win2000 pc to XP pc.
I have licenses for Cool Edit 2000 but can't install them; the program runs in '30 day demo mode'.

I ran the install from the (original) downloaded install files (I added my Win2000 C drive to my XP pc). I cannot select "Enter Serial Number" under purchasing Cool Edit ....
NOTE: I can select it for 'plugins', then it says I must have a licensed version of Cool Edit 2000 (Catch 22!!).

Ideas?

P.S. Moving programs to XP is a real pain, upgrade download files of +10 mb sometimes (I have a 52 kb dialup). Recovering 120 GB of files from a bad 160 GB hard drive took about +10 hours of recovery & transfer.
Programs installed:
Ghost 2003, Paintshop Pro version 7.02,Winamp, audiograbber, Netscape 8.0,
Cool Edit 2000, Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, and Webroot Spy Sweeper.

Can't install: MS Office 97

Answer:[resolved] How Do I Install License (Cool Edit 2000) on XP?

I know this is an old post, but I currently have the identical problem. Since it is marked "resolved" in this thread, I'm wondering if you might explain the resolution to me? Thanks!

Employee claims that while using the Move function to place folders in a different directory tree the folders were moved but the files were lost. I have tried to duplicate the action but have not been able to replicate losing the files. Talked to experts said no way it will happen. One in a million chance it will occur. However, employee claims replicated Move operation multiple times (10-15 folders) and lost files multiple times (7-10 times), but not every time.

Is this possible? I must fire employee for extensive data loss. However, if truly unintentional, and I can replicate as proof-- Employee keeps job.

Answer:Using Move Function: Move Folders & Lose Files

As the experts you spoke with indicated, there is virtually no way this could happen. Even if there was a copy error that Windows didn't detect and abort the move operation, you'd still likely end up with some sort of file even if it was corrupted and unreadable.

One in a hundred trillion chance of happening.

I am trying to move files from one external hard drive to another but it has been stuck on 'Preparing to move' 'Time remaining: Calculating. Items remaining: Calculating Speed: Calculating' for 20 minutes now. It has not moved on from that.

Google shows only results pertaining to Mac OS on this problem, when searching the message in quotes, it still doesn't give that exact match (come on Google, we search in quotes for a reason), instead what Google provided was results for 'Preparing to delete'

There seems to be no info let alone anybody having this message when moving files.

Can anybody help me get the ball rolling?

Answer:Windows 7 stuck 'preparing to move' when trying to move files

I have Windows 7 pro over here on three computers, and yes I too sometimes but not always get that long long long wait time for either copying or moving folders/files from source to target. For now, I recommend you only copy folders/files from source to target. And after you looked at the target, making sure the copies made it over safely, then delete from the source. I'm trying to recall what and where I saw some good answers, will post back if/when I find those URLs.

It's apparently a lot safer to use a limited user account, and that's what I'm trying now, but it's also a pain-in-the-a$$.

I also don't understand why the XP installer forces you to create another admin account, when you could simply login as 'Administrator'.

You're supposed to login to the admin account to install everything, but when you do, in most cases, the shortcuts seem to only be created for the account you're logged into at the time. Very messy.

The list goes on, and these things have probably been discussed before, but why is there a single 'Program Files' directory, which all users have access to? Surely there should be a separate directory for each user, so user A cannot access programs installed by user B, unless of course it was meant to be shared?

Yeah, ? is a wildcard for any character.Offhand I'm not sure if, for example, using wildcards for a 5 character file name--?????.jpg--will also respond to file names with less than 5 characters. But I didn't found how to move the split bar dividing Folders and file list in Windiows Explorer. The split bar is a very often used control in a lot of programs but how can we use it without mouse, with the help of keyboard only?

Answer:Resolved: How can I move split bar in window without mouse?

Select the mode of control the mose pointer. Then with the help of numeric pad and move the mouse pointer to the splitter bar. The pointer changes his view to the double ended arrow and the button "0" ( or the "Ins") emulate the hold down left buttton of the mouse. Enjoy the split bar position! Thanks for all!Sincerely yours,Sergey Kazakov,Saint-Petersburg,Russia.

Guys I have done this in the past but cannot recall how and don't want to botch.

I had hoped Windows 10 corrected the "rename user account" function but nope. I renamed a User Account due to conflict on the LAN [same name, same spelling] and sure enough, now I have two names for the account, one a slightly hidden original name, and permissions issues. To rid it, I will create an all new Administrator account, move everything over, and demolish the old.
How to do? the docs/files are easy... the settings for apps etc are not as I recall

thx

Answer:Move/copy-paste User Account data & docs to New User account same sys

Don't even try would be my recommendation.

Make a new Admin account and copy your documents. Set everything else up from scratch.

Most applications will store their stuff in %localappdata% but unless you have some specific app (Windows Live Mail or Outlook or something) tht you must move it would be much better not to try to move things.

If there is something specifically you want to move then ask about that - I've moved the 2 I mention above, for sure someone else has moved something else.

Generally it will be quicker (and cleaner) to start from scratch than trawl though everything hoping to make sure you moved the lot. You'll only end up missing some odd directory and it will not work.

Well I am not able to play the game on a limited account. Every time steam (program for HL2) starts up, it needs to write to a file. On this limited account, I cannot write to the file it needs. I use XP Home edition. I have two accounts on my computer. An administrator, and a limited account. I rarely use the administrator account. Now then, the problem is in the limited account. I have just ran Spybot S&D CC cleaner and Symantec on the administrator account. The Spybot picked up some tracking cookies and symantec picked up a trojan disguised as a song in my music. So I deleted that stuff and I go to log onto my limited account. It seems as if it froze, so I Crash the computer. I try logging on again and it loads, but it is in windows 98 format, missing some items on my desktop, all rearranged, not as many processes, and is running extremely slow. The administrator account is working just fine. Id really appreciate it if somebody could help me out :)

Thank You Kindly

Steven

Answer:Limited Account Problem!!

Hello and Welcome to TSF!!!

For what you are using limited account???
If you don't use it for some important tasks, you can delete that account and create a new limited one :)
remember that you should not delete your limited account if you have some important data that are bound to this account
[files that are on Desktop and in My Documents while you are logged with limited account]
First you backup important data and then delete account.
And make sure you de-encrypt data [folders and files are green], before you backup them...

But if you want to fix that account, lets try to do that...

It seems that for some reasons, limited account files are corrupted for some reason,
or you have viruses considering your limited account...

Do you have Windows XP CD???
You can try SFC /SCANNOW
Go START > RUN... > and type SFC /SCANNOW and hit Enter while Windows XP CD is in CD-ROM...

Keep us posted...

I am setting up a limited user account for my son. Im on XP. I can set up an account for him but how can I share my music and pictures from my account with him? On his new account he only has sample music etc.The only way I know is to copy the music etc new onto his account but then that takes up valuable drive space of which we dont have much left.Any ideas or suggestions? Many thanks in advance

Answer:set up limited access account help

Is your son's account showing Shared Documents on the desktop or in the Start menu? If so just make shortcuts to the required folders and put them in there.

Answer:can't print from limited account

Sounds like an operating system setting or possible software problem with the printer and they can be a real pain, lol.

I have IE 6 installed on XP with 1 admin and 4 limited accounts. In just 1 of the limited accounts IE just fails to open however if I change that account to admin rights IE opens fine. All other accounts open IE 6 as normal. Any thoughts on the problem would be much appreciated.

Hi, I'm currently evaluating Adobe Illustrator CS2, but it won't run under limited user account. It would only run under administrator account, not even Power Users (which is practially an admin group).

Is this common for AI CS2? Or does anyone know what specific permission does it need? I even tried giving the limited user account full NTFS permissions on the adobe folder and all files plus the adobe folder in common files and adobe entries in registry and even then it wouldn't run unless I was logged on as administrator.

I was searching Adobe's tech support, but didn't find any relevant info.

Answer:Limited account in xp home

if the software was designed for Win9x/Me, or if it was intended for WinNT/2K/XP, but was improperly designed. Quite simply, the installation routine for this application doesn't "know" how to handle individual user profiles, or the application tries tomake changes to "off-limits" sections of the registry.normally in xp you can add the program you want the limited user(s) to use to the shared folderAs Administrator,Right click START/select explore...got toprograms folder and drag the programs you want to share toshared programs or to the user folder that needs theprogram.

Answer:Limited account problem

Nor i,but was locked out after a reinstall of xp when i had 2 accounts.(Sounds like corruption of data) Anyway:) any reason you can not delete that limited account and create an other to replace it with? You will have the my documents saved and other files can be backed up.Just suggesting there may be a way round the problem.

i wanna creat an account in winxp that cann't do anything except watch movies and browes online.

Is it possiable????

Answer:how to creat a limited account in xp

It's possible, but it's not easy. You'd have to configure policy settings and possibly use a third-party application. "Browse online" is really vague. Many sites require cookies to function, so the account would have to be able to at least download and save those. Some sites require various plug-ins such as Java and Flash, so those would either need to be installed ahead of time or the rights on the account would have to be adjusted accordingly.

If you're looking for a quick-click solution, there isn't one. If this is really important to you, you'll have to learn some complex stuff and be willing to put in the time.

OS: Windows XP Professional

Hello,

I tried to create a power user account for my cousin but under Control Panel->User Accounts, I only have the choice of creating an Administrator or Limited account.

Is there a way that I can create another account type, like Power User (that can use all applications but not install)?

Answer:Why only Administrator & Limited account

Here is what you do to change an account to a Power User.

To change an account to Power User go to Start>Control Panel>Admins. Tools>Computer Management. In Computer Management in the left panel click the + sign in front of Local Users & Groups then click on the Users Folder. In the right panel you should see the name you want to make Power User. Right click on it and choose properties. Under the General Tab in the users properties type Power User in the Description Type. Make sure Password never expires box is checked then click ok. You should be set . I'm assuming that you are the Administrator in order to do this. .
