Display turns on to blank black screen

Question: Display turns on to blank black screen

I started having issues yesterday, the day after I installed teamviewer a program that is on my iPad also to remotely control the laptop. At first the screen started freezing when I was in the middle of a Java game. So I restarted the laptop only to have it freeze at the main screen (after login).

The screen would freeze the display would change to a very low resolution (I think). So I kept restarting it only to repeat. Until eventually once past the windows logo the screen would turn black and blank. Sometimes the display would turn on black and blank and other times it would do that after the logo.

A few times I managed to get it to go into safe mode and I restored to a few days ago but it made no difference, I also tried many other things like changing some settings but nothing worked.

So after like 2 or 3 hours I Rolled back and disabled "nvidia quadro nvs 135m" (since I read it might be causing the issue and I should uninstall it which I couldn't), once I disabled it I restarted the computer and made it to the main screen without issues, and I could even load my game. I enabled it again And restarted the computer only to have the same issues so I disabled it again after finally getting into safe mode.

I don't know if it works fine now, I left it on at most for 5-10 minutes without any issues and I never actually logged into the game to see if it works.
Like I said I tried restoring to an earlier time but I think the issue is with that particular driver but I have no idea how to fix it.

Preferred Solution: Display turns on to blank black screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys,

Basically as the title suggests, when I turn on my PC it powers up, I hear fans spinning yet my screen will stay black. To add to this when it stays blank my keyboard also does not light up.

So far the only way for me to access my PC is to turn it off and on a few times, usually including completely disconnecting it from the power for a short while.

PC Specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit)
AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor
GeForce GTX 760
8.00 GB RAM
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610 EPS12V 610W Power Supply

Rocca ISKU Illuminated Gaming Keyboard
Rocca XTD Gaming Mouse
(First time having a gaming mouse/keyboard so I was not sure if maybe they caused problems, sucked extra power etc..)

I'm not too experienced with the ins and outs of computers but all I can think is maybe my PSU is not giving enough power (though I get no warning beeps), my Keyboard might be the issue? I hope you guys can help. I've thought, maybe do I need to update the BIOS? If so how do I do that?

Answer:PC Turns on BUT my screen is still black/blank?

Is this a new build that will not post or has it been running then developed a problem?

Have you tried disconnecting ALL drives [both hd and optical] removing any usb device ie printer, scanner, hub, etc and then pw ON? See if the mb will reliably complete POST. If it does complete post a few times, then start connecting devices one at a time until you find the failed part. If it does not complete POST in the above config, then you will need to start swapping parts with known good units; start with the pw supply.

Next post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb installed, exact ram installed, etc. Note 8gig of ram does not really tell us much; 8gig of corsair 123xxx, tells us a lot more.

If you can get the system to post, enter the bios or uefi and post the following info; cpu temp, system temp, 12V, 5V, and 3.3V values.

So I ve encounterd this issue while im playing video games (mostly Tera), in the middle of the game the computer screen goes black (sometemies even other colors), but my computer is still running, although my Hard drive indicator isnt blinking.
I have a:
Intel core i5 3570k, Asus gtx 770, 8 gb of ram, 1TB HDD, 650W Psu,
I dont think its because of overheating, because when i look up the temperatures the max on my gpu is 75? on full load what is fine for the 770, and my cpu is on full load at about 54? max.
So could it be a software problem or my HDD is not working properly.
If anyone could reply i would be thankful.
Thank you!

This is a continuation of a problem I am having. As I am using the computer, the screen turns off and back on again with only the cursor visible then it turns to my normal screen with "Display driver stopped working and has recovered driver nvlddmkm", it then immediately lags, freezes and the screen goes black again. Driver won't update when I try, says update failed. Vista says it is up to date.

Go to the Nvidia site and DL and install the latest graphics driver for your version of Windows (you don't say what version you are using so I can't provide an exact link).

Answer:Display screen flickers (blinks goes blank or black) sometimes

Hello Ankit_DwivediThanks for using the Lenovo forums.Try to download the Video and Chipset drivers for the unit from the support page.

Make sure to reboot after an update on the unit.
Also, try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)1. Turn the unit off2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter5. Turn the unit on as normal DESKTOP1. Plug the cable into the socket and the machine. 2. Turn power off at the wall. 3. Hold down the power button on the front of the machine for 1 minute 4. Turn wall socket back on. 5. Turn machine back on.

I had a Geforce GT1030 video card in my M81 and each time it booted up, would go to black screen or go to black screen before finishing booting to Win10.  Ive actually tried several different Geforce cards with same results.  I took out card and used onboard video with no problem.  Gonna try ATI cards but seems like an issue with M81 and Geforce driver set.  I have even tried messing with bios settings to no avail. Anyone else experienced this?   Thank you!!

ok, a little more digging found a nvidia compatability list for win7 thru 8.1 but not for 10. interesting part is that i believe a lot of these cards use the same geforce experience drivers.

Answer:HELP! Desktop turns on and restarts repeatedly, other turns on to black screen

For system #1 the problem could be from one of several like a weak battery on the board itself not maintaining cmos information or even worse "bad caps" or a failing bios eprom chip for just two there. Bad caps being bad capacitors on the board like one or more leaking or bulged out. Look for any discoloration on the board itself.

For system #2 you may have accidently blasted with too much force against the video card seeing that now raised up in the slot. Any high power dust blower is never recommended for use inside any system. This is why there are cans of compressed air called air cleaners that gently blow dust and debris out of a case.

Answer:HELP! Desktop turns on and restarts repeatedly, other turns on to black screen

Hi….

Desktop 1:

Do you see anything on your screen at all while this is happening?

Have you tried to press the setup key to see if the BIOS will come up and make changes?

Do you have any USB devices (other than keyboard or mouse) hooked up? If so, try disconnecting them and see if it will at least POST or attempt to go into the OS.

WARNING: Before checking the capacitors, disconnect the power cord on your system and press & hold the POWER button to allow the power to discharge! Also, you should always ground yourself before touching computer components to prevent static discharge!

Just FYI, some of the motherboards in this series of HP’s have issues with the capacitors.

You should take a look at the capacitors to see if the tops of them are raised or discolored. Also, if you put your finger on the top of the capacitors, they should feel as if they are INDENTED and not flush or raised. Raising or discoloration (up to and including a black tar looking substance on the tops indicate a leaking capacitor).

Desktop 2:

Any POST sounds (beeps) produced at all?

Have you tried the monitor from Desktop 1 on this one?

Anything at all displayed on the monitor, to include CHECK CABLE message?

Recommendation: Open the case again and ensure that all the cards, memory, drive cables and so forth are all connect properly and not loose or dislodged.

Do you know how to RESET your BIOS to default using the onboard jumpers?

Here is a detailed link on troubles... Read more

Hi,
I have a problem with my pc.
my computer screen turns red in colour or goes blank sometimes. I cannot say when it happens.
my computer configurations are windows 7, 1gb ram, intel pentium 4 processor.
I unplugged all the wires fixed them again, cleaned my ram, then its works normally.
sometimes it takes more than a few times to get this right. I gave it for repair,by the technician said its working perfectly. but after a few days,I am facing the same problem.

Answer:Display goes off(either blank or turns red)

System specs... ?
Is this a laptop, or a desktop?.
If a desktop, swap out the monitor and see if the problem persists.
.
It sounds to me that the backlight of the monitor screen is failing.
(after seeing the pictures, I am changing my mind!)
On a desktop, just throw it away and get a new monitor.
On a laptop... it is possible to do a repair.
I did on a Dell, a number of years back,
usually less expensive than a new laptop...
but... may be more headache than it is worth.
This may mean replacing the tube,
or the circuit board that drives it
or both.

I'm afraid that you're not going to like what I'm about to write... Your T40 has most likely become a victim of the infamous GPU failure that T4x/R5x with ATi graphics are infamous for, where the video card starts detaching itself from the motherboard as a result of  heating/cooling cycles and/or physical stress on the chassis. Re-flowing/re-balling the solder in the GPU area or motherboard replecement are your only choices. Good luck and let us know.

Display immediate turns black when the cursor is idle and my laptop is running on battery.  Once I begin cursor movement again the screen immediately displays correctly until the cursor comes to a rest. I am running this on a brand new Acer VN7-592G-71ZL Nitro laptop on Windows 10. This is not the typical freeze that most people have had in the past, the system works fine with no freezing - seems to be a display issue. Attempted Solutions so far:1.  Adjust Power Option settings - turned all features related to sleep mode/dimming to 60+ minutes.2.  Update GPU drivers/revert to previous versions (attempted both)3.  Update/refresh Acer drivers (including BIOS)4.  Clean reinstall of OS (Windows 10) Please note this problem does not occur when plugged-in/charging.

avandy,

The first three bullets are what I would have suggested, but by "Clean reinstall of OS (Windows 10)" do you mean:

You used the factory reset functionality built in?
The recovery media you were advised to create when you got into the operating system the first time?
The media creation tool you downloaded from Microsoft to perform a clean install that way?

The problem in my Lenovo Z50-70 is that it turns it's display black whenever i boot it up everyday.I trun my laptop on it works fine for a few minutes (5-10 mins) then suddenly the display turns dim for a second and the very next second it turns black. The screenlight remains on and i can see a black screen, even though the system was active and i was working on it.The screen remains black till i close the lid and reopen it. Pressing any keys also doesnt help anything. While the system screen turns black it just stops responding to any of the key until the lid is closed and reopened. To solve this issue i've resetted this pc 2 times. Once i even used the one key recovery to recover it back to Windows 8.1 then again updated it to Windows 10.Last time when i had formatted the PC it worked fine for around a week or so, but again the same problem started however there was nothing much installed to this PC only the minimal apps.According to me the problem persists due to Intel HD Graphics. But, i dont know how do i solve it.Kindly HELP!! Thank You,Tushar Kesri

Answer:Lenovo Z50-70 Display turns black

Hi tusharkesri ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Closing the lid refreshes the display , so would there be any display connecting it to an external monitor ?
How the display go out even just staying on the Novo screen?

It can help us isolate further from the Intel driver (rollback drivers from the device manager would help ) from the video chip and lcd .

Update us how it goes .

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. So, these are my problems described in the title. I cannot change desktop from black, only can set a picture as a background.

When I am in pictures folder for example, I see blank or black thumbnails.
When I right click and go to personalize, I can see black themes instead of actual pictures.

I tried almost everything.
- reinstalling video driver
- clearing thumbnail from disk cleanup
- resetting dwm.exe
- going into safemode and then restaring into normal windows
- I tried fixing shell by using "fixshell"
- clearing & repairing registry errors
- ran an error checker
- ran a file checker

I have Microsoft Office 2010 - I heard that it could be the issue, but maybe I am not right, anyway...

I attached a print screen photo.

And, I am hopeless, any help please? Thanks

Answer:Windows 7 black screen, black or blank thumbnails, and black desktop themes

I noticed you're not running Aero. Click on last item, left side - "Troubleshoot problems with transparency...."

Office 2010 should not be a factor here. Public pics folder is empty - it should have sample pics in it.

I was going to re-download the Operating system through a microsoft download with my school. It said I had to finish installing AVG antivirus when I was downloading the secure download manager through my school. So I just uninstalled it along with the virus vault and all data, and when I rebooted the machine, the gateway logo shows up the the microsoft vista with the bar that goes back and forth showing that it is loading and then the display goes black and does not come back. I even tried to use my VGA cable to see if I could veiw it on my TV and it wouldn't display anything. I don't know if I released a virus that was in the vault or what happened, but does anyone have a clue what I can do to get the display back, or can I install a new disc with the operating system when I have no display? I won't be able to see the screen to know what to push.

Answer:Computer turns on to blank screen

Usually the amber color indicates a power problem... as if your power adapter or cable to the power adapter is broken, or the power socket is damaged.

A while ago, my Asus netbook decided to stop working, and it wasn't something that happened while I was using it. Last time I had used it, it worked fine, I turned it off, and when I turned it on again a few hours later, it would turn on but the screen would remain blank. I tried turning it on and off several times, but nothing. Eventually, I got frustrated and decided to open it up. I took it apart as much as I could, and once it was opened up, I decided to turn it on, and just like that, it worked. All I did was open it up, I did not remove any internal hardware or replace anything. I closed it back up, and since then, it's been working fine. I still have no idea how I "fixed" it.

So, that's that. Not too long ago, I bought a Sony Vaio netbook, and just like the Asus one, I am now having the same trouble with this. It was working fine for a while, and then one day, I turn it on and the screen remains blank. I tried opening this one, but it was a bit more difficult to open, and when I opened the Asus, I messed up the keyboard cover, so the keyboard sort of feels like it's indented in. So, I didn't wanna risk doing the same thing to the Sony one.

When I turn it on, the first thing that comes up is a black screen that reads VAIO in the center, and then after that, it's a black screen with a short horizontal blinking white line on the top left corner. The same short line you see when you open cmd.exe. However, if I try to type anythin... Read more

Hi,

I have had this problem since i recently bought my new laptop.

I got my laptop in December of 2009 and it is a Hp Pavilion dv7 with windows 7 Home premium 64-Bit.

The screen randomly turns black and then it turns on again and everything is normal again but i get a pop up saying that there was an error in the display driver.

I tried to solve the problem with and this is the report that came up.

First we need the actual DMP file. use these to find and upload it to us. http://www.sevenforums.com/crash-loc...d-problem.html

It is telling you that there is a problem with your video driver. You need to go to nvidia and download the newest version.

Completely uninstall the current driver, and only install the driver, not the other junk that comes with it
Let us know if you need help

My configuration is Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, X1950XTX Radeon, 2gb ram, 250HD, 500w powersupply.
So one day I'm using my computer, which had been working wonders for 3 months, and it just shuts down. Then it wouldn't turn back on, at all, no power anywhere. So, I replaced the power supply. I made no other changes other than the power supply. Now it powers up, all the fans turn on (including from the video card), LED light turns on, even the CD rom driver works but I get nothing at all on the screen. And since i get a blank screen with both of my monitors I can't see how it's a monitor problem. I also get no beeps when I turn the computer on, and although I am not sure, I think the hard drive disk spins.

I can't see how it would be the video card since it was previously working and nothing changed on that. The only thing that makes sense to me is that when the old power supply broke the motherboard or, i hope not, the CPU got damaged. Has anyone seem or heard of someone having a similar problem? What Should I try? How can I find out if its the mother board or the CPU malfunctioning? Thank you for the help.

Answer:Computer Turns on but Screen is Blank! Tried Everything, Please Help!

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

First things first, when you installed the new PSU, did you connect the power cord to your graphics card? Did you connect two power connections to your motherboard? Both the 24 pin and the ATX12v connectors?

Assuming you did, I'd strip down to the basics to help with the troubleshooting. Remove your motherboard from the case, and set it on a box beside your case. Intall ONLY the cpu/heatsink, one stick of ram and your graphics card (unless you have onboard graphics as well, in which case do not install your graphics card).

Connect the case's speakers to the motherboard.

Connect your monitor to the graphics, and then use a screwdriver to quickly "short" the two pins normally connected to the case's power on switch.

Tell us exactly what happens at this point. What lights are on, what fans are spinning, and what beeps you are getting. Good luck!

Also, please give us your motherboard make/model number, as well as your PSU maker name.

Every since I installed my Radeon 9250, on startup after about a min or so, the screen turns black like it would when you change display settings (ie. resolution, refresh rate etc.). What can I do to stop this?

Answer:Screen turns blank on start up for a second of two...

It may be blanking out like its changing resolutions because it is in fact doing just that. Are you using a DVI to analog converter on the back of your video card? because thats just what it does.

Hello,

I am encountering an issue of when the Dell optiplex 755 boots up, it boots through the Windows XP logo just fine, once it tries to transition between the logo and loading the system up, it just shows a black screen and nothing else happens. I tried using a bootable Windows XP flash drive to repair the system files and it loads the Windows XP setup ok but when it runs through all of the commands on the bottom of the screen and the last one says "Starting Windows" , it takes me to a blue screen (screenshot below). I have HIRENS and have done a lot of the chkdsk commands to fix the files and everything comes back ok. I tried to clone the hard drive with the same exact hard drive and still the same issue. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help in advance.

Boot the computer and press F8 in the Advanced Boot menu choose Last Known Good Configuration.
What is the make and model# of the computer? Go to the manufactures support/download drivers site and download the Chipset and the Video driver for the computer.
Go to Start/Search and type powercfg.cpl. Right click the powercfg results and Run As Administrator. Click Change Plan Settings/change Advanced power settings. Reset your power settings to your liking.

I've been trying to solve this problem for over a months, going on different forums, trying to contact a one on one guy to help me, pressing all types of buttons on my keyboard but nothing seems to be working!

I have an all in one Dell desktop that refuses to display not even the start up logo. This problem happened right after I updated my computer. The update said it was going to automatically restart but it didn't and just turned off so I decided to turn it on and thats when it all begun.

I'm not 100% sure if it was the update or could be another problem. I should mention that when i turn on my computer an amber or orange light is present as if it's sleeping rather than the normal white light.

I've tried to reinstall windows on a flash drive but I'm lost and don't know where to go past the everything is installed in the flash drive now I plug it in.

I've haven't had any success in finding a solution anywhere near close so I would really appricate the help!

Hey guys I'm hoping for some help on this one, since i can't seem to figure out what exactly is wrong. I've had my Y510 for about 2 years or so and the only thing ever to go wrong was the right hinge. All of a sudden the other day, I would turn my computer on and only the media buttons/ processor lights would turn on. The screen was totally blank, not even backlit or anything. I tried connecting the compter to an external monitor but I still didn't get anything. Even pressing the NOVO recovery button didn't do anything. Any Ideas would greatly be appreciated. UPDATE: I was reading an article/faq that showed very similar to my problem, however lenovo says I need to update my BIOS. But how would I even going about doing so when I can't even get the lcd to turn on?

Well it started awhile back when my PSU died so I got a new better one, but the computer would still turn on but stay at a blank screen. I tested my parts and came to the conclusion that it was either my mobo or CPU or both, so I went to the store and got a new Asus mobo and a sempron chip and installed them. The computer still has the same problem and I don't know why and what to do. Sorry for my english and any help is much appreciated.

Please use descriptive thread titles from now on.Thanks.

Answer:Computer turns on, but I get a blank screen after replacing bad psu.

So how did you test your parts?

Start with a minimal system - nothing but mobo, PSU, video, CPU and a single RAM module. Preferrably not in the computer case but on a nonconductive surface like a wooden desk.

If it doesn't work, replace the video (if external) and RAM.

Look over your habits. Did you take anti-static precautions when putting the thing together? (Something as basic as touching the computer case or the PSU before touching any other components.) Did you happen to work on the thing while it was plugged on and you dropped a screw on the motherboard?

Heys, nice to meet everyone.
Well my first problem is that ever since i got my pc (6 yrs ago) it frequently restarted. So i turned off automatically restart & frequently got bsods. The first was DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL & the second one was PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. I searched on google the problems and it said something about my NIC & Sound Driver. So i decided to open up my computer and try to swap my NIC whilst in the process just check out my graphics card and my ram to see if it was faulty, After that i turned on my computer and at first it beeped, then made this screechy sound for a split second and i smelt something weird. After that i turned it off re-inserted the RAM, NIC, GC & when i turn it on i get a blank screen. Both my cd drives keep resetting or blinking and wont open up, All my fans work & the red light and green light under my power button just stays there.

Specs of my computer:
- Pentium 4 2.4 GHz
- NVIDIA Geforce4 MX440SE 64mb
- PC333 512mb RAM x 2 (1024mb)
- 80GB HD + 120GB HD
- GIGABYTE Motherboard (MODEL: GA-8SG800)

--

The BSODs are caused when i play games like; Counter-Strike & Warcraft III. Also while i listen to music using WMP10. It can sometimes just be caused from sitting there.

Answer:Computer Turns On but Blank Screen & BSOD

wah man u are really something u can use a restart pc for 6 year

i also face this problem before and i only use it for about a year i change another motherboard

ok then, the beep beep beep sound is come from ram which is being wrongly insert or mother board cannot connect it

u smelt something???hopefully u din get ur RAM burn

maybe u get ur mother board or RAM a shock try to run a benchtest on ur pc(i guess is ur motherboard)

it also can cause by power supply with a slim chance

Our Gateway MS2285 was working just fine this morning. I turned it off normal, by using shut down. I got home from work, hit the power button, did some stuff, came back to the laptop and thought the screen had timed out so I hit the space key to get the screen to come back on. Nothing!

I held the power button down to shut it down, thinking it started wrong. After a 15 second wait, I restarted it. Again nothing. I can faintly hear the fan running but nothing else. The 2 lights showing it's on and the battery is charged light up. I hit the volume buttons and they light up als the P and the one next to it will flash if I hit them ( I don't use them so I don't know if that's normal.)
I looked online for possible solutions and found that people had unplugged it, taken the battery out, held the power key for 20 seconds and restarted...or before restarting it f1, f2, f3, f4 and enter...or hit the fn + f6 keys at the same time. None of these worked at all.

HELP PLEASE!!! My poor old desktop, I'm on now, is slow as molasses We use the laptop a lot.

You are all always so very helpful I hope you can help me resolve this issue very inexpensively.

Thanks for any help.

So my Qosmio X770 turns on but the screen stays blank, it was randomly turning on every so often but now it just stays blank.

The hd is working fine still, I've tried plugging it into a TV to see if it works but no signal is found. I've been told by a friend that it could be a problem with the graphics card, I'm wondering if it can be simply swapped if I buy a new one or is it integrated and I would have to replace the whole motherboard?

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Qosmio X770 turns on but screen stays blank

Even if the HDD would be faulty, the notebook should power ON and you should see the Toshiba splash screen on the internal display.
So its definitely NOT HDD problem.

You said you have connected the notebook to the TV. Can you see the Toshiba splash screen on the external monitor (TV)? Are you able to access the BIOS pressing F2?

If not, there is definitely an hardware problem.
It could be an fault of memory modules, graphic card or even motherboard malfunction might be possible.

In case of GPU or motherboard problems, the whole motherboard has to be replaced and this is expensive fix since mobo is most expensive notebook part.

Question: Screen turns black

Hello, I really need help with a problem I've been having at random. This has happened 5 times (and counting) and they were all at times I was of course away from my computer. The screen goes black and my keyboard and mouse doesn't light up anymore. My computer is still on but I can hear my CPU fan racing every time this happens.

I don't know exactly why this happens other than a possible graphic driver error but I am updated to the latest. I check my event log and this is the only error that I see happening each time this happens:

Faulting application name: csrss.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bc115
Faulting module name: sxs.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17514, time stamp: 0x4ce7c9cc

Fault offset: 0x0000000000011b2f
Faulting process id: 0x36c
Faulting application start time: 0x01d07ee0e62ef7e4

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\sxs.dll
Report Id: 0d00ead7-eae8-11e4-92da-005056c00008

I read online sxs.dll belongs to Microsoft for something called Fusion? Do I need this on my computer or is the problem something more than this. If someone can please help me with this I would be happy and If you need any logs I will try to post them ASAP. Thanks

Alright, today I hibernated my computer (I usually hibernate) left it for an hour and attempted to turn it back on, now it loads fine but once it gets to the point where it should display the vista logo and then the log in screen the screen goes blank. The hard disk light is blinking fast so fast it's almost just staying on and the wireless does its blinking patterns as if it's redying the wireless connection but the screen remains black. I've tried safe mode, same result. Two screens, same result. I booted Ubuntu and it was fine so I'm using that now.

First of all, any insight into how I should go about fixing this?
If not, I have extremely important files on the hard drive is there any way you could recommend getting them back?

Thanks for any help, I'd hate to have to take it in and risk the guys at the store deciding it's easier just to wipe the hard drive or something.

Answer:Screen turns black before reaching the login screen

Are you using a Ubuntu Live CD, or are you dual booting?
If you're dual booting, you can access your ntfs partition from Ubuntu using steps listed on many many web sites: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...earch&aq=f&oq=
Some are easier than others.

As for fixing your Vista. I have reservations because in some of my steps Vista has this nasty habit of overwriting the master boot record with its own without warning you (making you unable to boot into ubuntu if you dual boot), so research some more, and proceed with caution. If you boot into the Vista DVD, I think you can click repair, and you have a bunch of options and it looks like this:
http://neosmart.net/wiki/download/at...eryOptions.png
I haven't tried them in a while so I can't really recall what each does.
You can try going back using a restore point. Be VERY cautious with "Startup Repair". I think that's the one that rewrites the master boot record. (if you really need to try it, research how you can backup the master boot record in ubuntu, then restore it if needed - usually a flash drive, a floppy, or a bootable CD may be needed - you most likely would be able to do it from the live cd if you know the steps though).
And if all else fails, do a repair install. Can't recall how it's done, but there are many sites dedicated to that topic. You can also ask around the forum about it.

My computer screen randomly shuts off as I am using the computer. This is NOT at boot up. When I turn it back on there is just a black screen with my white cursor. I have to reboot sometimes to make it go away and the problem is solved until it happens again. Scanned with Anti-malewarebtes, avg pro, microsoft online scanner. All came back with nothing. Computer slows down right before the computer screen goes black again. Could this be a driver problem? First started happening last week.

Answer:Screen turns off as I am using it, back on with black screen and cursor only.

The computer is slow though so it still makes me wonder if it is a virus of some nasty sort. There is plenty of disk space free on my computer and the vents are cleared so I don't think over heating is a problem. The inside looks fine but I am up for any more suggestions, I have been suggested that a capacitor may have blown but they are in top shape.

This is happening as I am actively using the computer. This is not happening on reboot. The screen shuts off, the computer stays on and I turn the screen back on to find a black screen with only my white cursor visible that I can move around. I must reboot to get rid of the issue and it is gone, my computer is fine, but then my computer becomes slow for a while and it happens again a few hours later.

Display sometimes goes half black or just some part of screen. I Have attached a screenshot.  I either have to scroll again or minimize window or switch to other window to get rid of that blackness. If I make some selection using Mouse or Ctrl + A then it disappears and I can see screen clear again.

Hello there, this is the problem:
on startup the screen is obviously black but turns on and becomes completely white after a few seconds.after about 10 seconds (POST?), the screen turns black until you hear the windows startup sound; the screen remains blackif I connect an external monitor I can see the desktop; the computer works fine.if I try to switch from the external display back to the laptop using Fn+F5, it doesn't work and shows me just the CRT option (on th top of the screen)if I try the same task using the proper command in the control panel (display), is doesn't accept any different optionstarting the laptop with a linux live cd or usb, the problem is the same

This is a link to a short video (12", 6Mb) that shows the problem, from power-on to the blaNk (white) screen:

Any help is appreciated. The laptop warranty has expired. I'd like to understand if I can revive it.

I was working in Scrivener (1.9.7.0) when my PC blue screened and rebooted. When I reopened the project, the text in the document I'd been editing had turned into 17 pages of what appear to be blank characters. (It's not just white text, I checked.) I navigated to the RTF file for that document, tried opening it in notepad, and it's full of blank characters, 65KB.

I tried doing a Windows search for documents containing a word that I knew I had only ever typed in that document (the word 'plushie'), and the document came up in the search. This seems to indicate that the data still exists somewhere...

I've already tried the following and none of them solved the problem:

- Checking for Windows "Previous Versions" of the RTF file
- Recovering older versions of the file with Recuva; searching for any files containing a word unique to the lost text with Recuva
- MS Word's "Open and Repair" feature
- Checking to see if I have a recent enough restore point
- Checking Scrivener's automatic backups

I'd appreciate any ideas! I've been working on this project all week.

Here's what the problem is: 1. The screen suddenly tinted in pink and turns black after 4-10 seconds. So I have to perform hard reset to reboot. 2. Nothing could be seen on the screen when I reboot but it would show up in external monitor, but there are vertical blue dotted lines on the screen and Windows would fail to start. It won't even get to the log in screen. 3. Rebooting again (using hard-reset) would bring me to Thinkvantage Rescue and Recovery startup repair and I can only fix the problem by restoring the system. 4. Then, Windows would be able to start like normal but the problem will occur again after 5-10 hours. Or else the screen will not turn on after I sleep or hibernate so I have to repeat step 2 and 3. Today I performed a full restore using ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery so the system has it's factory settings. Everything looks OK so it gives me a relief that was temporary. The problem will always occur again if I try to update the score in Windows Experience Index. After the screen flashing during the rating update, the screen suddenly tinted in pink or green and then blank so I have to repeat step 2,3 and 4. Every video components passes when I tested the video card using PC Doctor 5. Sometimes after I restore the system, there is a message in Windows which sounds something like this: "Windows succesfully recovered from display adapter problem". I thought changing the display driver will fix the problem, but it will happen no ... Read more

Either the CCFL backlight or inverter board have stopped working. If you are still under warranty, you can contact Lenovo and have it repaired. If not under warranty, you will have to replace the LCD/inverter board with a compatible replacement.

Hello everyone, get ready to have a little bit of reading!

So my problem is actually that my screen (both my screens cuz I got 2) turns black randomly. I am in a CS GO game or playing Eve online and my screens just "stop working". I can close and re-open my main screen and it says "no signal". BUT the computer is still working fine, I was on Discord with friends and they were telling me where to go...didint work out pretty well, but that said, it looks like my GPU crash or something?

Happened twice in 30 min and now it just happened once...
I had another problem 1-2 months ago, well I had that problem for about 6 month or so. Randomly my computer was freezing, image freeze, sound freeze, ALL freeze. (used to happen like 1-2 times a month) Now it seems that it wont freeze (I am gaming less I suppose). But I got this new problem or black screen.

Oh and at the same time I am writing this, I was trying to update my GPU drivers, and it popped an error and close the Nvidia menu...
Well actually I think it might be my GPU that is about to die, but how can I test it? How can I be sure it's the GPU? It could be the power supply getting old and not giving enough power? It could be the motherBoard...maybe?

I recently switched to a new hard drive on my dell Inspiron 2500 notebook. I used backup images burned to cd's via norton gohst to accomplish this. I originally had trouble just starting up but I have since edited the boot file and am able to start up but the problem is as follow:

Whenever I start the computer in regular mode the computer does its regular thing of showing the bar with the blue going across it and saying windows on top but then the screen goes black. During this time however the computer seems to be functioning correctly as if i had just turned the screen off.

The strange part is that if I start the cmputer in VGA mode it works and I can even optimize the visual settings so that it is as if nothing is wrong. How can I resolve this?

Thank you,
Joseph

Answer:Computer turns on, but black screen :(

Inverters and bad backlights can be hard to diagnose without just replacing the parts but it sounds as one or the other is out/going out.
If you check these out yourself, good luck. Laptops are a bear and unless you've done a few, a repair shop may be best.
Good luck.

Ok so, im trying to help my friend with her broken computer.
She got hit with the avsoft virus, It took me a while but I finally got malwarebytes on her system, and had to rename the .exe in order to get it to run in safemode and it seemed to have worked pretty well, i then wanted to boot it in normal mode and run a full scan to make sure we got everything.
Anyway, we were experimenting with it for whatever reason (i guess malware removal had us feeling brave) and we unhooked her monitor, and plugged her desktop computer via the monitor cord into my laptop. i know that you can plug a monitor into a laptop and use that instead of the laptop screen, so we wanted to see if it would work with the desktop instead of the monitor. You know, like use my laptop as the monitor and keyboard.
I went into the my laptops nvidia control panel and messed around with some of the settings
All of a sudden my laptop screen went black.
I just rebooted, and my laptop was fine but when we plugged her monitor back into her desktop and rebooted it would not reboot correctly.

The lights on the computer would turn on, you can hear it is running, the fans are running, it makes one beep, just like a normal startup. the screen displays a logo (not the windows logo) an everex logo for a few seconds, and then some text comes up (like normally) and looks like it proceeds to load but it flies by so quick you cant read it, and then nothing. A big black blank screen.

Hi, i have freshly formatted my computer, installed all the updates and drivers, i have also RMA'd my video card (which i thoroughly tested and found it works fine on other computers.) but i cant figure out why my screen goes black but the computer keeps running. I can hear my music still playing and i run a dual monitor setup but when my screen goes black both monitors keep bouncing around the "Analog / Digital" box and thats all i can see, i have tested the monitors on other computers and they work fine as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Answer:Screen Turns Black after 10-15 Minutes

Check your Power Settings, go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options, and check "Change Plan Settings" - Where it says "Turn off the Display" make sure that it is set to "never".

Even if you have Music playing, if you have the screen assigned to turn off after a period of time, it will. I usually use a screensaver instead.

Hello. I've come to hopefully find a solution to a boot up problem I'm having with my computer. There are several factors that I'm honestly not sure will play a role or not, mainly because I'm not very understanding when it comes to computers.

The problem is that when I push the power button of my computer, it sends no signal to my screen. I can't tell if it loads anything or not either. I can think of a few things that might have some effect on this, but I'm not sure.

About three months back after cleaning my neglected tower of dust and such, it started to shut off rapidly after boot up. To inspect the problem, I had a friend look at the computer. He removed the cooling unit on the Processor revealing that my 8year old computer had next to no thermal compound. So after putting of ordering some for about three months, we had applied some about 2 days ago. The computer then booted up fine, but seemed to have an excess amount of lag. So I wiped the computer and reinstalled XP tonight. When it was booted up, it worked fine, so I went into IE to download firefox as it's my preference, then started reinstalling my drivers. First I installed my Videocard, then kept my computer booted up for my sound drivers which I got from the Compaq homesite. After doing this, I rebooted my computer. Not I wanted to get simple things such as AIM and and Java. So when i go to boot up Firefox from it's default homepage, my computer shuts down. when I go to reboot it, it doesn't start and I'm ... Hi, at first I thought this might be virus related. I went through with help from Howard_Hopkinso, and removed all virus' and malware. But my problem persists.

I have an Alienware Area 51 m7700, 120 Gig HD, 3 Gig memory, 3.8 GHz Pentium 4 HT duo processor. NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra.

What happens is when i try and playing a source game for little while the screen goes black, sound skips, but the laptop still runs. Also happens when i click on certain internet links.

I assume that i need updated drivers, which i did. but that didn't work either.

I am lost, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Tech Support Guy's users,

Yesterday, I got back to my house, and went on the computer for a short while, then while looking on the internet, my Inspiron 1525's screen died on me. Not only my main screen, but also my other monitors as well, saying there was no signal. I was assuming that it is a dying Video Card, but I wanted to have more insight regarding my question. Is my fear correct, or it is the drivers? I haven't updated my drivers since 4 months ago, so I doubt it is my drivers.

Any who, if you need more information from me, please ask away and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Hello all,

This is my first post here, so please excuse me if I have created this thread in the wrong place. For quite some time (perhaps about two-three months) my screen has been flickering and turning black at random times. Sometimes my screen will be fine for a few days in a row, and then it might flicker for a few minutes and eventually just turn black. Usually what I do is turn it off and on a few times and eventually it returns normal. The thing is, I know it is still turned on because my music player will still operate, and it is a lighter shade of black, meaning I can still faintly see what was on my screen. Further, I initially thought it was an issue related to my charger being wrecked, but I have since replaced this and the problem persists. My guess is that it is some sort of virus, which I am basing on my quick reading of some other websites where others have reported similar problems. I'm really not a tech whiz, so does anyone have any suggestions?

Any input will be highly appreciated.

Answer:Screen flickers and turns black

I'm not very well versed in this area, but it does sound like a case of a faulty monitor since your programs run as per normal during those flickers.. You might wish to post more details on your specs and age of your hardware.
Have you tried replacing the monitor for testing?

Oftentimes when I turn my laptop on, the machine turns on but the display is blank/black. Drive light blinks and the power button is lit but the screen shows no sign of function. It also does this when I close my laptop and it goes into sleep. Tried hard reset a hundred times, and sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. Sometimes prepairing automatic repair shows up, and when I choose go to home menu, it turns black again. I've also tried choosing the restart selection, and the same happens. I have also updated the graphics card and to the latest Windows 10 update and it seems to have made no difference. I've tried so many things but nothing is making a lasting change. Please help!

About screen blank state (page25) :
If the time set on the ?Turn off monitor? timer in the operating system expires, the LCD backlight turns off. You can also turn off the LCD backlight by pressing Fn + F2. To end screen blank state and resume normal operation, press any key.

Try pressing FN + F2 again , else FN + F3 to opens the interface for selecting display options to change.

If pressing any key would not work , manually shutdown the pc and unplug any connected cables .
Press the Novo button (item 14 page 82) to power on the machine. Check to see any display on the laptop screen.
