installing update x of 173?! (173 updates???)

Question: installing update x of 173?! (173 updates???)

Why is Windows 7 doing the BIG HAUL? usually it only does 10 or so then restart, 10 or so more, etc. etc. etc. when a new install comes in. but Windows is doing 173 ALL AT ONCE!!! it has been a half an hour and it's only on 15 of 173!!!

I Googled the problem but nothing relevant came up!!! but a bunch of odd results for programs or websites that have 173 in the name but NOTHING Windows 7 or Windows Update in the results!!! even though I included 'Windows 7' in the search query

Preferred Solution: installing update x of 173?! (173 updates???)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

how long has it been since you updated windows, and have you changed anything recently, like upgraded office from 2007 to a newer version?

Windows updates keeps installing/reinstalling the same update over and over again. I looked in my update history and it shows that they are installed successfully every time. What should I do and is this using space on my laptop by re-installing over and over again?

Answer:Solved: Windows updates keeps installing/re-installing the same update over and over

It is not using any space. Right-click the ones you already have and hide them so they don't come back.

Every time I shut down, Windows Update installs the same 2 updates. It never gives an error message saying that the install failed... it just insists on doing it again. This is the update from last week, I guess. I'm afraid I'm at work and away from the affected computer.

It's not critical, it's just annoying, bc shutdown now takes too long.

I'm betting it's an easy enough fix, but I don't know 7 well enough to start guessing.

Help?

Answer:Update keeps installing the same 2 updates on shutdown

Welcome to SF!

Look in your Update history to see if the updates are actually installed. If they are, you can right-click on the updates that say they need to be installed, and select Hide.

Hi

I updated my Windows and it said I had some updates that needed to be downloaded and installed. I went ahead and downloaded and installed them and was asked to restart my PC. When I restarted my PC, it said

"Preparing To Configure Windows. Please Do Not Turn Off Your Computer"

I waited for over an hour now and decided that something was wrong. I decided to restart my PC and everything was fine. Windows update didn't find any new updates so I checked my installed update history. It shows that those updates that I was suppose to install didn't install. The status for those updates show up as "Cancelled".

I was curious to know how do I download those specific updates (Security updates) and install them on my PC?

Answer:Windows Update Has Stopped Installing Updates

Hi, first check your disk.
Download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) (assuming you have some sort of conventional disk with SMART parameters). Post the result.

Then check the file system
From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.

Then post a screenshot of Disk Management (Windows key + X, click Disk Management).

Is there sufficient free space on C: ?

From an admin command prompt run
SFC /scannow
This will take some time.
Report the result on the screen.
If this fails, stop here.

Have you tried doing updates with all unnecessary peripherals disconnected?

Try the Windows update troubleshooter. (Bottom rt)

Hello,

My windows update has not been downloading/installing anything for a few weeks now, and is always using about 25 percent of my CPU. I just did a SCF scan and here are the results. It did say something was corrupt.

Here is the Log

https://www.dropbox.com/s/8j7lt40rcbebvm4/CBS.zip?dl=0
EDIT: I no longer have a problem. I was doing a bunch of things and then finally noticed that shutdown button had that little symbol that said it would install updates. I guess the reason why my WU download was always at 0kb was because the files were all there.

No more problems, however the scan still said something was corrupt, i would really appreciate it if someone looked through and see what i'm missing.

So I did a fresh install of Windows 7 (again), and I shut it down last night and it started installing some updates. 211? I thought it wouldn't take too long. Usually when I have installed all the updates for a fresh install it took no more than 3 hours. But 11??? This is pretty insane. Since I woke up which is about 1 hour ago, it has been stuck on update 177 of 211. I suspect this update has been causing the system to be updating all night because when I last checked before going to sleep last night at 10:30, it was at update 118 or so. My question is why is it taking so long and when will it be finished? Also, is there a way to interrupt this without corrupting the hard drive?

The specs of the machine are as follows:
Intel Core i5-4440 3.1 GHz
8 GB Kingston HyperX Fury RAM (DDR3-1600)
EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti SC
1 TB 7200 RPM Seagate Barracuda

EDIT: I shouldn't say Windows Update, it is supposed to be updating then shutting down.

I upgraded to 7 from Vista, using an original manufacturer disk. It was not a clean install, I installed on top of Vista.

Works fine and I started installing about 200 updates in series of 5-10. Went great until one failed.

It is KB3075220 and error code is 800F0902

I attach a printscreen.

What can I do to fix this?

Answer:Installing 200 updates after upgrade to Windows 7 -first failed update

Hi Johnny,
That error code is not really a problem.
That KB has been superceeded, but not yet recognised by your system, it may clear itself after a reboot if not you can hide it and carry on updating the rest.

So I built up a new system a few days ago, clean install of Win 7 Pro 64-bit on a new SSD.

Then I ran Windows update. Got something like 134 updates the first time I ran it. I figured that this was a big catchup, but I was wrong. I keep running Update and it keeps finding "new" updates. Thing is, many of them are from 2011.

Why didn't Windows install every single outstanding update the first time I ran it.

Any way to identify outstanding updates and force them to be installed?

Answer:Windows 7 update installing updates from 2011, after being run repeatedly

Because some updates are incremental and require others to be installed first.

One thing you can do is slipstream Service Pack 1 into your install disc. This will take care of a lot of the updates.

I just upgraded my laptop from Windows 8.1 to 10 build-10240 and any new app I attempt to install says it completes but wont open. In the start menu under all apps the new apps have no logo, a line underneath them, and clicking on them sends me to the

Using Windows 7 x64. For several months now I have been hiding windows updates related to IE 9 cumulative security updates. Windows Update would hang during the installation; the progress bar would get stuck at around 50% and I'd eventually have to reboot the machine. The machine would boot and try to continue the update, which would also hang. I'd have to power off the machine and when it restarted, it would roll back the failed update. Sometimes in the course of doing this my machine would end up with Aero turned off and I'd have to get that re-enabled, or restore from a restore point. All other Windows updates work fine. I tried all sorts of things to get past this, from running FixIt for Windows Update to uninstalling IE 9 (so that I could try to install it cleanly; no luck, this too hung) without success. So I finally hid the update.

Since, then however, more IE 9 security updates have appeared and from time to time I try to install them with the same results: hang, reboot, hide the update. Last night I tried installing the IE 10 preview, figuring it would supersede IE 9 and I'd be rid of the issue. No soap; IE 10 wouldn't install.

I'm at the point where this has gone beyond annoying and I'm starting to worry about not having these security updates. I always keep my machine updated religiously via Windows Update and have never seen such an issue before.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hey guys,

Tonight i built and set up the aforementioned Nuc pc and installed windows 7. However some of the drivers arent installing like the integrated hd 5500 graphics driver and the engine management one. These 2 pop up in my windows update as "important updates" but i get failed messages when i try and install them.

Thank you,

Answer:Intel NUC5i3RYH, Windows 7 Update not installing important updates

I regard Windows Update as a last resort for installing drivers, and suggest installing the drivers supplied by Intel for the board:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/83257/Intel-NUC-Kit-NUC5i3RYH

If you have had driver installs fail, it may be necessary to boot into Safe Mode and delete failed installations from Device Manager and install again if you continue to have installs fail.

I have a legal copy of XP which has been registered. There are 92 updates that will not install. I isolated KB892130 as the validation tool that will not validate with Microsoft before the other updates can be installed. I have turned off Avast (antivirus), but did not disable it. I have a laptop with Avast on it which has updated perfectly. I have forced validation from DOS but this still doesn't let the updates go ahead.
Any ideas?

Answer:Solved: XP update KB892130 will not validate and stops updates installing

I manually updated each one of the 97, (by now), updates with a shutdown inbetween each one...phew... took 6 hours but it is now updating. So the forced validation from DOS did work after all.

I have 3 Updates I've been trying to install for a while, however they seem to keep failing. I've never had any issues previously with Windows Update, and I keep the computer relatively clean. I've tried a few troubleshooting steps ( Such as running my Registry Cleaner, Fix-its from Microsoft )

I am getting the Error 80070643. I ran the Fix-it from the Microsoft Website - Windows Update error 80070643 and the Microsoft Office Source Engine Service is already running.
I also went here, and ran the Fix-it which resets Windows Update, In Aggressive Mode - How do I reset Windows Update components?

Ran Windows Update again, Same error.

I’m running Windows Seven x64 Home Premium, I have not made any recent changes to my computer.

Either the Updates are bugged, or there's something else going on here. I'm going to try installing them from the Administrator Account - I am going to try in Normal Mode and In Safe Mode With Networking and post back the results. If anyone has any suggestions I'd be very grateful. Thanks

I've honestly never really had an issue with Updates. This is very odd.

**I tried Windows Update on Administrator with no success. I also tried to run it in Safe Mode, but it would not open.**

I'm going out - I will be back later.

Hello,

I have Windows 7, SP1, with Windows Update configured to:

"Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"

I am now unable to work on my computer when first setting Windows Update to download updates.

This is because once Windows Update has installed updates, a Windows Update screen showing a "Restart" button flashes on to the screen but then without any input from me, the computer reboots, losing me all my personal work that was in progress.

When I say "without any input from me", I mean that I do NOT click any reboot button.

This issue seems to have occurred for the first time, following the installation of Security Update
KB3185319, but of course I do not know if it really is connected with that.

I would appreciate a solution to this issue.

Thank you.

Hello All,

This is yet another issue with Windows Update on 7; I recently (a couple of weeks or so ago) upgraded my father's computer to Windows 7 and he loves it.

However, whenever either of us try and use Windows Update, it sits there for hours and hours on "Installing Updates 1 of 2."

Does anybody have any ideas where I could look as to why this is happening?

I will post more information on this when I can find more detailed account of what's going on with 7.
Thanks,

Hello,

I am hoping someone can provide some assistance in getting rid of this BSOD problem.

Here is what happened.

I was using two driver update programs: One called Driver Booster 2 by Iobit and the other called Slimdrivers.

I updated various drivers including Nvidia which I had previously uninstalled but it kept popping up so I just let it go. The next thing I know, after that is installed and there were no more drivers left to install, I ran Windows Update and it also wanted to installed Nvidia again. I didn't have much choice in the matter...before I knew it, it was installing and I had to restart my computer. When the computer turned on again, I used it for a little while then it started to overheat something terrible. The computer was so hot I thought it was going to start on fire. Almost as soon as it started overheating, I got the BSOD and within a second it restarted or shut down. I can't remember which. The fan was running at top speed but that still wasn't enough. I could have cooked an egg on the backside of this thing.

So the next day, I started the computer up again and I uninstalled Nvidia completely using Iobit's Uninstaller to remove all traces of it in my computer. But the other problem I have now is that it still runs dangerously hot within a few hours.

I've uploaded the zip file as per the instructions. There must be some kind of conflict going on.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Answer:BSOD after installing NVidia updates and other driver updates

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Dont run any disc cleanup program before you upload another zip.

Hi,

To give you some back story, I built my computer the end of August 2012. Ran Smoothly. I decided to get a 60 gig SSD to be the partition that stored Windows. I didnt have much stored on the Main HD so I deleted my original 2TB HD and tried installing on the SSD... found that the SSD was bad and sent it back. Decided just to stick with the 2TB HD. Had some issues installing windows back onto the HD as it would just hang up. Finally managed to get windows installed, had some "Not genuine" issues but that resolved after multiple restarts. That brings me to where I am at today and I feel as though the system has been getting worse. I would normally be fine with just a clean install but with all the issues I had with that initially I am very skeptical of trying it again. I have 5 important updates and 7 optional updates all of which do not install. The Installer just sits on Downloading updates and I have left it overnight with still no result. I am not sure if this is even my main issue but I am beyond the point of figuring it out myself so any help would be appreciated

I downloaded the System Readiness Tool and it Ran. I tried running the sfc /scannow in Admin cmd prompt mode and get a "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" I attached my CBS file. Any help you could give or guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Windows Updates Not Installing : Error Unknown (Sits on Installing)

Hello and welcome Faticus just as matter of interest why did you give up on the SSD? was not it under warranty?

That is heck of a drive to be installing on mate just how did you prepare it for the install?

You can run a chkdsk in Windows too > My Computer > right click on the drive > Properties > Tools > Check now - then follow the points in my pic.
You then reboot and it will start a chkdsk (in DOS).

My last successful update check was September 11, 2012. Some updates installed successfully, others failed. The failed ones were:

Answer:Cannot Complete Installing Updates, or Check for New Updates HELP

Hello dlolley and welcome to Seven Forums.

According to the Advanced SystemCare diagnose report you provided there seems to be a problem with something called Tuneup 2012 or Tuneup Utilities. I'm not sure if this is a different product from Advanced SystemCare that generated your report or if Tuneup 2012 is a part of Advanced SystemCare. In any case, these tuneup utilities can cause major damage to operating system files, the registry, etc. I would suggest uninstalling them. Windows 7 isn't like XP which required constant tweaking to work right.

Then I would run a full anti-virus scan with your installed anti-malware suite. No anti-malware product is 100% effective 100% of the time. If there was such a thing we'd all be using it. So after running that scan I would follow up with some additional scans using these free tools. Don't forget to update the data bases before running the scans.:

Malwarebytes

ESET Online Scanner

Windows Defender Offline

If the scans come back clean you could try rolling back your computer to a date/time prior to the update problems using system restore. I would also run a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

System Restore

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

When you're finished with the above you can try installing the updates again. Do not use the automatic update setting. Use the setting called Never Check... Read more

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Now it doesn't even give the error anymore. It just sits there and fake-installing .Net Framework.

I'm trying to add the latest updates on my Windows 8 (64-bit) laptop (Asus Q400A-BHI7N03) and the checking for updates... never completes. I've even tried leaving it over night with no success.

MS Defender updates from Windows Update in settings fail, other Updates successful, but MS Defender from Control panel can update the same definition updates without problems (why, oh, why? can't I just select and copy from settings? )

Over this time, I need to fix insider builds, but have a problem:

SFC and Dism component store health fix report no problems

Any Ideas?

I did search out this problem...very old posts recommended I start a new thread.

For the last 2 weeks every time I shut down automatic install...installs the same 8 updates.

I'd appreciate any help in solving this problem.

Thanks,

I have a new T470p (type 20J6) with Windows 10 Enterprise x64 Build 16296 and System Update v5.07.0065. When I run System Update I am shown 11 optional updates. I select all these updates, click 'Next >' then 'Download'. The packages are downloaded and installed (9 successful, 2 could not be installed) then I reboot the laptop. If I then run System Update again I am offered exactly the same 11 optional updates. I've been through the entire process 5 or 6 times now. How can I 'reset' System Update so it doesn't keep offering me the same updates which it says have been successfully installed? UPDATE: If I install and use the 'Lenovo Companion' app and select 'System Update' from there I am told 'No updates are available. Your system is up to date'.

I am relly unhappy with Microsoft, I have spent a ton of money on their stuff over the last 20 years and I am just about to throw in the towel and go UNIX. I can build and Repair systems a learning how to repair windows systems but DOS is my first LOVE!

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

Hello All,

I was referred here by NeonFx from the TechGuy Security forum. He had me run a slew of anti-virus/anti-spyware diagnostics. According to NeonFx my system is currently infection free and he states the problem lies elsewhere.

He also had me run the Windows Update FixIt tool in both Default and Aggressive mode - both of which did not fix the problem. So what is the problem??

PROBLEM:

When I run the install Windows updates, the updates do not install, and I receive the following message (not verbatim, but close):

"Some updates were unable to be installed..."

This problem "came out of no where" and there has been no suspicious activity prior to it starting other than an IE7 redirect rootkit that NeonFx helped me remove (if I recall correctly an infection of agp440)...

Stumped, stumped and stumped...

Lenovo System Update tells me that all is up to date! I searched at Lenovo for new drivers for windows 8.1They asked me exactly what notebook I use. For the x1 carbone 3460-4LG (checked 3 times because I couldn't believe it) they discribed my computer as:i7-3667U(3.2GHz), 4GB RAM, 256GB Solid State Drive, 14in 1600x900 LCD, Intel HD Graphics, Intel 802.11agn wireless, WWAN, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure Chip, 4c Li-Ion, Win8 Pro 64. My notebook has 8GB RAM, 180GB SSD and (as I believe) no carbone x1 has 1GB Ethernet, because it has no network connector at all! So first question: can I believe the suggestions of lenovo for new drivers? There are several drivers released in October 2013 that I surely do not have already installed. That means, Lenovo System Update doesn't work any more, without error message! Question two: Has Lenovo a solution to repair their defective updater? Or will they release a solution? Very disappointed regards.Alex

Answer:After Win 8.1 update - Lenovo System Update defective (doesn't find updates any more)

Yes we have the same Problem with Thinkpad x230, T530 and W530. Under Windows 8.1 System Update doesen't find any drivers. So now we have to download every single driver..... I hope really Lenovo will find a solution very soon......

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

I have been dealing with issues for over two years. Should have started with a clean install. My issues mostly have to do with startup and the Desktop. If anyone thinks they may be able to help me fix these issues, I'll list them. If not, I will have to bite the bullet and do a clean install (over 100 apps and all the settings). Ugh!!

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help
Thanks

What???

That makes zero sense.

one thing at a time.

Which computer do you want to install Win 7 on?

Do you have license?

One license = 1 machine.

Hello!
I bought a Dell XPS 15 (9550) with Windows 10 and so far everything have been good, except that I keep getting empty updates from the Dell Update-app.
I have installed these empty updates ("0 updates are ready to install") many times but they never stop.

Today, I got this message: "73 updates are ready to install", which got me a bit worried.
What can I do?

Answer:Dell Update - Empty updates "0 updates are ready to install"

I'd suggest you uninstall / reinstall Dell Update. Type Settings onto [Cortana] search box, click on Apps, and then uninstall Dell Update. To reinstall: expand Application in the link below, and then Dell Update.

Answer:XP updates not installing

Change the update options to prompt you for install. When it does say they are ready for installing you should be given the options of 'express' or 'custom' install. Click on custom install and just try running a couple of updates through or even just one. If this works proceed to install the updates in small chunks and let us know what happens.

First try easy methods:

1.Uninstall all 3p security software
2.Try install these hotfixes from Microsoft Download Center
3.go to Control Panel>>Troubleshooting>>System and Security>>Fix Problems with Windows Update
4.Try reregister WU in aggressive mode How do I reset Windows Update components?

5.Try reregister WU libraries Repair & Fix Windows Updates with Fix WU Utility | The Windows Club

If easy methods fail too, follow to below steps:

1.Run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges (right click on cmd.exe) as admin and type:

sfc /scannow

2.Run Readiness Tool Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2
even if this tool don't solve problem it create CheckSur.log file in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder
3.Download firegenul Altair Technologies Ltd.
place firegenul.exe in C:\Windows\System32

next again run cmd.exe with admin previlliges and type:

firegenul

it creates report from WindowsUpdate.log and is saved to C:\Windows\System32 as FireGenReport.htm
4.Prepare log from VistaSysInfoTool VistaForums SysInfo Tool
5.Find CBS.log file from C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder

all files CBS.log,CheckSur.log,firegenReport.htm and log from VistaSysInfo pack to ZIP format and attache to post

I am running V1511 OS10586.14 (installed from USB via Media Creation Tool) Updates, mainly for Antivirus definitions are downloading but are not installing. They show up in C;Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Downloads, but will not actually install. I have tried deleting the download file and they will load again, but not install. Obviously I have checked that the system is set to automatically download and install updates. I have run the System Fle checker utility and all passed no problems. The only update that has installed correctly was KB3103688 that was installed just after the new OS was installed. A virus def downloaded at the time, showed as installing for a short time and then literally vanished from the screen.
I should add I had the same problems with 10586.3. The current antivirus def installed is 1.211.1040.0 and I have just downloaded 1.211.1050.0 - which loaded to the downloads folder, showed as installing and is not showing as an installed update.
What gives?

These have been sat on my computer for months and I can't get them to install.

As far as I can see IE9 minimum requirements are met, can't see why it won't install.

The other updates say they've installed, five minutes later they're back in the update list.

Hey All,

My system is setup to download updates automatically, but prompt me to install them. I've downloaded a few updates (WMP, IE 7) but decided to install them at a later time. Well, I'd like to install them now, but the little yellow shield isnt in the system tray anymore. Is there a way to install them? I went to the microsoft website and the automatic scan says I have all of the most recent updates (yeah, I have them, but cant find them now).

Hi all,
I've been slacking off of updating my Windows 7 64-bit, since the first time I've gotten errors sometime last year. For now, I've decided that I should be more diligent in making sure everything's running smoothly as possible and so I've tried to do the updates. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to update them, and they're up to around 30+ updates now.
I've already done the System Readiness Tool, removed .NET and reinstalled (manually) to the latest one, and tried a few to download a a couple of older updates (dating from July, if I remember correctly), but got an error message that they weren't for my computer/OS.
I also tried to install from Safe Mode, but I can't seem to get my USB internet dongle to work during Safe Mode, as such, I don't have internet for that.
I was wondering if I anyone would be so kind to offer assistance.
TIA.

The need (and value) of updating to XP SP3 has come up in a couple different threads (vs. just keeping SP2 + and getting all updates). So, started this thread to offer some info as well as personal opinion and solicit same from others.

Is SP3 equivalent to SP2 + current Windows updates?
I?ve read several sites (not blogs) i find reputable and knowledgeable about XP which indicate there are differences.
As i understand it, SP3 includes "updates and hotfixes" that were available in SP2 but aren't hotfixes those updates you only got from MS if you contacted them to say you really need it???
Finally, Overview of Windows XP Service Pack 3 from Microsoft summarizes some possible differences you may find as well as a few "new" features unique to SP3
Some updates/features available in SP2 were optional. In SP3 they're all installed by default
A few features are new to SP3. Period. They don't change the user interface (i.e. the customer's experience as Microsoft calls it) but do affect XP's behavior.
Is there other value to having users with problems update to SP3?
I believe so. I?ve found it?s not rare to find newbies or those just less "computer savvy" who believe they're current with SP2 when, in fact, a look at their installation history shows that?s not true (update install failures that are ignored, sometimes ignored to the point of being turned off). As my own rule of thumb i feel much more confident that... Read more

Answer:The value of installing XP SP3 vs. SP2 + updates

Many programs such as Belarc Advisor will inventory and list all the service packs and updates installed... and tell you if you are missing any.
I recommend just the opposite if your computer has some significant age or an older cpu, and OS... SP3 raises havoc with some HP AMD machines, some Gateway, and some eMachines... by test. Which don't show up until SP3 is installed.
ZoneAlarm, Comodo, and SunBelt have had connection and detection problems with some conflicts between Microsoft and their install.
Bottom line. Don't install it if you do not know that you need it. That can always be done later. Most of those items in SP3 benefit Microsoft... not the user.

I have a NT 4.0 machine that is running out of hard drive space and I see that there is a lot of these $ntuninstallxxxx$ in the WinNt folder. The question is can I safely remove these if the updates worked fine. I think that these are for uninstalling the updates, so do I really need them?

Any other ideas on how to trim the fat?

I have read through the how to protect yourself from malware link. Seems my copy of Windows is not recognized by MS. I am not surprised, as I found out the guy who sold me the computer was not exactly the honest type.

I am manually installing the patches for windows from the Software Patch site.

http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/index.html

A lot of the patches require a restart. I am starting from 2004 just to be on the safe side. (I already have SP2 installed, and I do not know from then on) As I see it right now, it looks like it is going to take a week to get my computer back up to par.

Is there an easier way?

Thanks

Question: installing updates

Ok, so, i get that button thing a couple days ago at the bottom of the screen that says windows updates are ready to be installed. At the time, im too lazy to install it. Today, i had nothing better to do, so i decided to click it. Blah blah, it was installing, and then i wanted to play some minesweeper. so i pressed start, and it just froze. Everything else in my comp worked, like other trillian windows and even the update window. It was just the taskbar that was frozen. I decide to wait for a couple minutes and see wat happens. I start watching tv, and when i come back, its the same. I notice that the clock says 7:55, when it is really around 8:20... wat caused this?

Answer:installing updates

Why are you going through the Security Center to download and install Windows updates? Why don't you use the Windows Update/Microsoft Update link in the start menu, or open Internet Explorer and then click Tools - Windows Update?

You should also set it to only notify you of new updates and not to automatically download and install them. You then have control over what gets installed and when they get installed.

when i bootd up this morning my security had warnings that i wasnt protected, so i went to security center and tried to update, downloading started about 30% through download stoped and said unable to complete. so then i went to windows update and noticed i had three optional updates 1 was a def 4 microsoft security essitls, i installed that update like i do all definitions for microsoft security, then the security was back to protected. i really dont think this is normal but i am a beginer so idk. o and it was my virus and spyware that was unprotected. can any1 share there thoughts and mayb tell me what i did wrong?

Answer:updates, not installing

It me again. You can run but cant hide LOL
Change the update setting to notify and not install automatically (MSE will install automatically but thats ok). Then install one at a time, not all at once
The second tuesday of each month is called patch Tuesday. That is the day a lot of Updates are sent. Watch for them and do one or two at a time.
What happened was not normal, but it seems ok Now

What gives?
Cheers

Answer:Updates not installing

They don't show as installed anymore if you look in the windows update > advanced options > View your update history. You can see the latest version installed with the update tab in windows Defender.

Hello everyone, I've been having this issue for quite awhile now, and just letting it go by, but now it's starting to really become an issue I think. I have several updates in windows that will just NOT update. Looking at the update history it started back in December. I'm not very computer savvy, my machine is mostly for gaming, and it now seems to be dragging my games down. I know there is gonna be additional information needed, but if anyone could help me figure out how to get these things to install, and get my machine back to properly auto-installing updates, it would be greatly appreciated.

Also, around the same time as these updates stopped installing, I have completely lost the bookmark feature in Firefox, all my old bookmarks are gone, and I can click to bookmark something, but it doesn't do anything. Not sure if this is related, but it started around the same time.

I am currently running Windows Vista 32 bit SP2, and I run it in classic view. The updates that are refusing to install are;

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows Vista (KB976325)
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 Security Update for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 (KB979906)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB959209) x86
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB974318)
Update for Windows Vista (KB970430)

Yay! I'm not sure where this should be, so I'll put it here! Please move if it's in the wrong place.

And excuse me for being weird. I'm a bit sick, so my brain is a little squishy ATM.

I've been trying to get an update to install, but it's been erroring out. It's Microsoft SQL Server update (KB955706). I'm not sure on all of the details of what's happening, so I'm not sure what to make of it. If anything, I don't remember getting any other SQL Server updates if there were any others. If there's something you recommend, then I'll be open to some suggestion that could help.

OS: Windows XP Professional (if you need more informationi than that, I'll be willing to put it in)

You must get those done. As soon as you have all the required updates, you will receive SP2 via automatic update.
Some of those codes can be caused by harware problems with the computer.

I have a new HP 455 G4 I am creating a MDT install for and have hit usual snags with drivers! In this case most drivers are installed via standard injection methods but Bluetooth and Hotkeys are not so usually SSM is used and has worked on all models previously but this current model is ignoring all the SPxxxxx updates. The log reports no updates found but I have used the Softpaq download manager to get the latest files which are SP77355 and SP77052 but neither are installed when SSM is run. I also have the latest SSM (3.2.4.1) and Softpaq manager (4.3.4.0) versions.

Running Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1

After a fresh install (SP1 bundled) last weekend, the system ran the first round of updates (171 of them) and has been trying to install the second round (140-some) ever since. I had to turn updates off because it kept failing to install the updates; it would spend a couple hours installing the updates, then restart with the error message, "Updates failed, reverting changes."

I have a couple thoughts, but I'm curious what you all think.

Answer:Updates Not Installing

Id install them in blocks of 10, (might show you the problem KB/KB's) leave Netframework till last.
If you do not use IE run them prior to netframework.

One of my XP machines keeps attempting to install the same updates. At the end of the process I get this error:

The following updates were not installed:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB916281)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB917344)

The system tray icon is present and says "updates are ready for your computer."

The update goes through the usual motions before failing and throwing the error message shown above. This happens the same way, whether I install:

from the system tray icon
upon shutdown/reboot, when it queries 'do you want to install updates now?
directly from the Microsoft Update web site
Attempts to outsmart the update system haven't worked, either.
It also happens the same way whether I use Express Update or Custom Update.
In Custom Update I've tried changing the order in which they update, and tried updating only one per session.
The results are the same.
If more updates come along, the newest updates DO install, but these two "old" updates continue to fail.
The Update site does download new copies of the update files with each attempt.
I've attempted to put reboots into the mix, even though these 2 updates haven't demanded a reboot.
The log file for each of those failed updates shows the same error:
Failed To Enable SE_SHUTDOWN_PRIVILEGE
Unexpected Error While Executing Line 1
Update.exe extended error code = 0xf00d

Security updates for MS.NET Framework 2.0 SP2 (KB2656352 - KB2633880 - KB2572073) are downloaded and installed....again and again,
for a month or two now. Looking at update history the installs show the green checkmark but I have to wonder if something
inside the machine is not registering the valid install.
The computer itself is running great (since a reinstall Aug 2011)

Answer:Same Updates keep installing?

I had the same problem a while back and they are faulty updates. .NET Framework is not essential. It is required by some apps but you may not need any version. You should attempt to uninstall all versions of .NET Framework via Add/Remove Programs. If any version won't uninstall, leave it alone. That means you need it. After you finish, run the cleanup tool at the link below. That should get rid of the faulty updates. You can reinstall .NET Framework if you like but it's not necessary. I did not reinstall them and have had no issues.

Just a general question about installing updates.  There are several updates which HP suggests through HP Support Assistant to install on my computer.  I'll admit that I'm not the savviest user when it comes to technical computer terminology, so I was wondering if there was someplace good where I can review (hopefully in layman's terms) what these particular updates do.  Or, should I just go ahead and install all of the suggested updates?  Right now, there are about 10 updates being suggested since I purchased my computer a few weeks back.  If you need more specific details on what the updates are, let me know.  Thanks.
