Keyboard on Sony Vaio laptop types the wrong symbol/letter etc.

Question: Keyboard on Sony Vaio laptop types the wrong symbol/letter etc.

Hi everyone, my laptop's keyboard recently started behaving oddly, e.g. when I try to type the letter 'p' a '*' appears. Same also true for the '/' key, when I press it a '+' appears.

This is probably something very simple, but I can't figure out what I've done. Numlock is off, stick keys are off and the language is set to my own. I'm using Windows 7 and it's a Sony Vaio laptop.

Many thanks in advance 😊

Preferred Solution: Keyboard on Sony Vaio laptop types the wrong symbol/letter etc.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Keyboard on Sony Vaio laptop types the wrong symbol/letter etc.

Hold down the FN key and press Numlock key.
If this just started happening, then do a system restore to a time before this happened. You can also use an external USB Keyboard or the on screen keyboard and see if that has the same effect,
You can also go to the Sony Vaio drivers page Sony eSupport - Drivers & Software Updates - Select a Model and download the updated Touchpad and Chipset driver for your model.

Hi,suddenly the laptop started typing wrong words. I checked keyboard layout, it was English US. I even tried Ctrl + Shift and Alt + Shift, but nothing is happening. If I type small letters it types Capital letters, sometimes the same type numbers....if I type 1,2,3,4 it types !,@,#,$ respectively. Even though Numslock is also on.Even I tried external USB keyboard in the laptop, it is the same problem. At last, even I formatted the laptop and installed windows 7 again, same problem.

Hi everyone, newbie here. Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong spot. I joined this forum to get help with another problem but after reading the posting instructions I'd better do some homework before getting into that little mess I've made .

In the meantime, I've pulled out an inherited (but brand new) laptop and there is a glitch in the keyboard.

The @ key types " and vice versa.

Because the laptop was probably bought 1 to 3 years ago (and I don't know where from), I won't bother trying to fix it under warranty.

Any ideas please?

Many thanks in advance.

Answer:laptop keyboard types wrong symbols

You possibly have English UK/English U.S. problem.

On Task Bar where it say EN, right click and Settings
(if not there, Control Panel - Region and Language - Keyboards and Languages - Change Keyboards)
Click Add - Find the appropriate keyboard in the list.
Change Default input language above to new language you have added
Remove the old one below box (Installed Services)

Hi
My laptop keyboard suddenly stopped working.
I have restored back to factory settings and when the computer boots up the keyboard works fine.
The keyboard works and allows me to put my password in,but then once its booted the keyboard stops working,or so I thought,I have now realised that it does work but I have to keep my finger on each key for approx 3seconds for it to type.
Any help would be much appreciated

I have an issue with the keys on my new Sony Vaio... I had surgery on my right hand, and the tendon is permanently weak... so for me the keys are too firm, working on it is painful. (I had no problem with my old Toshiba, which had a spring-keyboard.)

Is there a way to loosen the keys?

Answer:Sony Vaio laptop keyboard

I very much doubt it. But many laptops have a jack for an external keyboard. If you could find one you liked, even a wireless one, you could use that instead. Wireless would allow you to really manipulate the placement and angle for the most comfortable access.

Recently I had a friend who spilled water twice (yes, not once but twice) on her Sony VAIO PCG-FRV25 laptop. Now, the enter key and "O" key does not function at all. Does that mean something's wrong with the keyboard and I should replace it? I sure don't want to buy a replacement keyboard that costs up to $100 and not be able to fix the problem. Thanks!

Answer:Sony Vaio Laptop Keyboard Replacement?

If we assume that the water damaged the keyboard and you want the keyboard to work, the best thing to do would get a replacement. You could order one from Sony, or you could look on eBay to see if anyone is selling parts that would work. (If you try that, see if you can find out from Sony what the part number is for the keyboard and if there are any procedures for replacing the keyboard. These will make it easier for you if you are looking for a used part from eBay).

If you want to use the computer for now, see if you can connect a PS/2 or a USB keyboard to the laptop. I know that hamper's the laptop's portability, but assuming they work, it'll get you by until you can come up with a better solution.

I have the Gateway NE56R12u 15.6-Inch Laptop
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

A few drops of water was spilled onto my keyboard (I don't think the water got down into the laptop... as far as I could tell the water landed on top of the keys, but I could be wrong) and when I went to clean it, I didn't think ahead and turn it off before cleaning up the spill. So many keys were pressed and now the keyboard is not functioning correctly. When I press the majority of the keys, they will either add other letters/symbols, or they will trigger Windows shortcuts.

As an example..
B = "B (it also brings up the right click menu) (this will also bring up this: € symbol as well as times)
O = 7i7o0
L = *L{YK

M = HM

k= yk*

j = brings up googlechrome downloads

i = takes curser to the start of the text

The space key types b ' and brings up the right click menu.

7 brings up the "open file" shortcut

and so on

Some keys are working properly: a c d e f g q r s t v w x z

I browsed google a little to see if anyone else has had this problem. A big fix was pressing the FN button and the NumLock at the same time. That didn't work. Which, I doubted it would since my laptop has a full keyboard.

Is it possible that it's stuck on some sort of sticky keys or toggle keys setting?

I joined this board because I am a bit lost.

I have a Sony Vaio Laptop PCG-GR390 that my 2-1/2 year old son had all to himself for 3 minutes. To make a long story short (yes, kiddie Home Depot tools were involved!!!), I now have to replace the keyboard and keyboard cover. Here's the problem: I'm a pretty handy guy who has done lots of repairs on computers of varying degrees of difficulty, yet I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the old parts out/off without snapping something or going at every screw on the unit. Can someone please give me some very detailed help? I have found numerous sites giving details and showing pictures of other Sony's, just not my model.

I thank all that can help in advance.

I have just got my self a Sony VAIO 850 series. When ever I use Microsoft Office or Works and try and press the letter k I get "spell check is complete". This only happens in Works/Word/eXEL. The k works fine in other types of programmes. There are further problems with the letter u and l. When using Works the letter 2 brings up the help pages. If I use the virtual desk top keyboard from Accessablity there is no problems. Any ideas please as its driving me crazy. Someone suggested a possible hotkey has been set up maybe in the registry or such like. I cannot find any hotkeys set up within the programmes themself. Any Ideas as how to check this and remove. Sony VAIO VGN-NR330e laptop.

I cleaned the keyboard right before installing Windows 7 on it. Now, the keyboard is acting very strange. I don't know if cleaning it messed up something sensitive and now the hardware itself is shot, or if it's a driver, or a flat out compatibility issue with Windows 7.

I tend to believe it is not the hardware itself, as when I pop off the problem keys and put them back on, they respond normally. But only to a light touch, not if you hold it depressed.

Then again, even when I get the entire keyboard responding and typing what it should, it is completely messed up all over again upon restart. What on earth???

Everything was fine for 2 months. Suddenly today when i boot, i got the BOOTMGR is missing Error.

I put in a Windows 7 installation dvd and tried to fix the startup. But it didnt help.. When i tried to explore command prompt and system restore options.. I noticed a wierd thing..

The drive assignment has been modified. My Windows partition which was originally c: is now shown as e:. And my original e: is being shown as c:.

So, If I manage to change the drive assignments, the problem should be fixed. But how can I do it? In command prompt or using Windows recovery options?

Hi

yesterday me and my mate were fixing his pc and decided to use the onboard recovery program that sony provide to return the laptop to factory state.

During doing this it said "Failed to read the image file becuase a stream reading error occured. recover your your pc again". so we did this 4 times each time it said the same and was stuck at 13%. So being 11:00pm at night we decided to call it a night and come back to it the next day. WELL this where the fun begins, we started it up and found it says "Error loading operating system". SO we rang sony and we described are problem that basicly the included recovery consol has ****ed it up.

My mate spent an hour on the phone to ask if we could have some xp discs sent out so my mate can get on with course work (he backed it up but has now no pc to run it). Sony say they will send us the dics for £53 . And considering all my laptops came with discs to reinstall windows. I dont see why we have to pay for a disc when a recovery partition hasnt done the job that it was meant to do.

Basicly where do we stand, have they got a right to charge us? (they did offer to send it away but its a job we can do in a day and not 10)

Also i have 2 xp home discs we can use but im not sure if were allowed by warrenty and by microsofts rules. Can we use another copy of xp home to install on the sony laptop using the laptops cd key without voiding the warenty?

Thanks for any help, Matt

Answer:Sony vaio all gone wrong

Yes, they do have the right to charge you! they are not obliged to send you the disk!

I would imagen that it would be ok to install XP home on the PC, as you do have a valid CD-Key on the laptop I donot se a problem with doing that, as you have paid for the serial.

as for the warenty, I belive that the warenty only apllies to hardware, and since the laptop is running XP Home anyway, you are effectivly doing nothing more than using the revovery console.

The only thing is, I would possible refraing from deleting the "Recover Drive" partition during windows setup as this MAY void the warenty (but I am unsure)

Well, my computer is an Acer Aspire PC running on Windows Vista Home Premium, but when I try to type things, my keyboard will type in a completely different symbol. For example, in most programs, instead of an apostrophe, Ill get è instead, or if I want to use square brackets, Ill get ^^ç. It wont happen in Microsoft word, but it will happen when Im on the internet, or using the search function in my computer.

Here's what the Keyboard driver window keeps telling me:

Under general tab:

HID Keyboard device

Device Type: Keyboards
Manufacturer: (Standard keyboards)
Location: on User human interface USB device
Device status: This device is working properly.

Under Driver Tab:

Driver provider: Microsoft
Driver Date: 21/06/2006

Digital Signer: microsoft windows
If anyone out there could help me, It would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Hello- After repairing my screen, Averatec returned my 5110P.Upon
return it has a keyboard problem. Averatec tells me that even though
the warranty ran out while in thier possession they cannot help me.

Here is the problem-

u types j
\ types nothing
d types x
f types nothing
g types v
j types u
x types f
v types g

Here are my attempted fixes-

1. NUM lock is off
2. HKEY_USERS/Default/Control panel/Keyboard has proper values
3. Updated drivers
4. Deleted/reinstalled drivers
5. Completly reinstalled OS (xp Pro) with start up disks

My Keyboard properties reads:

Japanese PS/2 Keyboard (106/109 Key)
Device type: Keyboards
Manufacturer: (Standard Keyboards)
Location: Plugged into Keyboard

If I go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/Accessibility/On-Screen
Keyboard, the on-screen keyboard types properly

The physical keyboard types the same whether in DOS or windows

I don't have an external keyboard, so I haven't tried that yet.

I believe the "Japanese" refers to manufacturer and not Language
because, I belive I have seen that keyboard for sale in systems that
are targeting english consumers.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks much,
Brandon

Hi there,

I was working on a paper on my desktop when suddenly my e button and 5 button lost proper functionality.
Whenever I press the "e" button, it types 1e instead, and pressing the "5" button types y5. Holding either button down gives you 1eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee or y5555555555555, but pressing them repeatedly gives 1e1e1e or y5y5y5 for example.
This does not happen when I use the on-screen keyboard, as then e and 5 type normally by pressing the buttons with my mouse. I looked into language options and nothing has changed; I only have the US Keyboard. This typing happens in Windows Word, in Chrome, in start search and even command prompt. Also have Kaspersky running and I don't seem to have a virus. I have no idea why this suddenly started happening, but I'd like it go away ASAP so I can write my paper instead of it looking like som1ething lik1e this.

Any help would be appreciated!
EDIT: Okay, the problem went away by restarting my computer. But in case anybody knows why this happened, and to prevent it in the future, I'm sure people would like to know the answer (if there is one).

Hi linscrawf,

Here is an article with 2 ways of performing a powerwash before signing into Chrome. http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/27649

This should reset the device (removing any unsaved data) and any potential settings or key combo's that you may have it.

It still requires some keystrokes, but they shouldn't also intiate other keystrokes. If they are, or after performing the powerwash you still have this issue it would likely indicate that the liquid spill is affecting the circuity below and multiple keystrokes are being detected.

I hope this helps,Cory

I have an HP EliteBook8570p for several years. It has a full qwerty keyboard plus a separate number keyboard on the right of the qwerty keyboard. Just this week the keyboard function changed. Normally pressing the Number lock key (when lit) caused the number keyboard to type numbers instead of the direction arrows and home/end/pg up/ pg dn functions when the num lk was off. This was fine and it worked like this since new. Now pressing the Number lock key causes keys on the qwerty keyboard to type numbers. The u,I,o,j,k,l keys now type 4,5,6,1,2,3. It was not like this before.I was always able to type letters on the qwerty keyboard and numbers on the smaller number keyboard while the num lk key was selected and its light was on.I compared drivers and keyboard setting to another identical computer and they are the same. The other computer works the way I describe at the start. Also Function/Prnt Screen no longer copies the screen.Any ideas? Any help? Please and thank you

Hi,

sounds like a serious hardware problem. You can try the following to check if just the internal keyboard is making some trouble or your machine is malfunctioning: just connect a external keyboard (ps2 or usb) and check if you got the same error.

But nowadays you should bring your machine to a local authorized service partner for a hardware checkup because I think that your keyboard is defective and the hardware components of your machine should be checked.

Here?s a link to find the nearest local service point:

Question: Sony Vaio Keyboard

Earlier today, in the middle of typing a search into Google, my keyboard suddenly started acting funny. At first, it stopped typing. Then pressing a single key resulted in several incorrect letters showing up at once. Pressing some keys will pop up folders (My Documents, etc.).

Thinking it was a key sticking, I turned off the computer and pressed each key a few times. When I turned it back on nothing had changed. I double checked that my drivers were all updated and ran a virus scan just to make sure that nothing was infected, but I still can't figure out what the issue is.

Any ideas?

When I try and type into Internet Explorer (or Google Chrome and Firefox) I don?t get the letter or symbol that I type.
For instance when I typed ?a? I got ?r? on screen and similarly ?w? gave ?t? and ?m? gave ?y?.
I then typed ?a? again and got ?u? on screen.  When I kept
hitting ?a? I got ?u, I, o, [? which is of course part of a progression along a querty keyboard!
When I type into a ?Word? document the problem does not occur nor does it when I type into an email.
Things that I have tried:

I have run a full scan of my anti-virus software, Zone Alarm (which is up to date.)I have scanned with Spybot, which found a whole load of things that I treated.I have scanned with Malwarebytes but it did not pick up anything.I have run my registry software ?Regzooka?
None of these actions have cured the problem.  What can I do to correct this?
I have Windows 7 with all of the latest updates downloaded.

Answer:Keyboard types all the wrong letters etc. in Internet Explorer and other browsers

Hi,
1. close all open IE Windows.
2. Start>Programs>Accessories>system tools>Internet Explorer (noaddons)
this will start IE in noAddons....
If the problem disappears when running in no addons mode then it is being caused by one or more of your addons...since your other browsers are affected it is probably being caused by an addon that is common to all of your browsers...
Use the Tools>Manage Addons menu from IE to disable your Toolbar and BHO addons one at a time (restarting IE each time to see if disabling an addon fixes the issue)
or

Hi there,

I am using a Sony PD 170 DV camcorder hooked up via 4 pin firewire to a Sony Vaio laptop. I am also using Avid Composer video editing software. The problem is that I can see the video from Avid in the viewfinder but it freezes in the viewfinder even though it is playing on the computer. This is preventing me from outputting a project. Do I need a driver for this camera?

Thanks,
Paul

Answer:Sony Vaio PCG-K13 keyboard problem

I too have a Sony K series laptop and wish to get inside in order to get get all the dust out - I assume this is the reason for steadily increasing fan noise over the past year. I've undone all the screws with arrows, and the top plastics come loose however there appears to be soemthing holding it in place in the centre. I expect you have experienced this. I too cannot see any screws for the keyboard hood, and whilst it does feel loose, there are indentations on the keyboard side which
I suspect you are expected to use to prise it off. But is it a question of brute force? I do not want to be the one to find out and risk breaking anything! I have taken a few keys off the keyboard to try and find a screw; however it was in vein, there are no screws where it appears to be held in place.

Do you think unsticking the rubber pads at the four corners of the screen, which I strongly suspect will yeild screws to take the plastics of the screen apart, will help?

Please let me know if you have any progress in this matter.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR430E and last night my keyboard went crazy. The FN keys have been pushing them selfs ( sound and brightness ) going up and down. Random keys pushing them selfs over and over. As if I were holding them down. I uninstalled the keyboard driver and let windows refind it ( no help ) . Scanned for virus's none were found by avast. Ran regcure ( did not help ). Plugged in a usb keyboard and it works fine but defeats the fact that the computer is a laptop ya know. I really would love any and all advice. The computer is not even a month out of the box BTW. Sony is going to be sending me a on site tech to replace the keyboard, just waiting for the call back from them. But the fact that the computer is so new makes me wonder if it's just a fluke or if there are known problems with vaio keyboards / Computers, And if I should just take it back and get something else or what.

Thanx in advance for all the advice

Simple question: where can I find a replacement keyboard for the new Sony Vaio F-series laptop?

Background: I find myself in Germany at the moment and it turns out it's very hard to get a laptop with the normal qwerty keyboard here. So the new laptop I will be getting soon will have the German keyboard. What I would like to do is to replace this one with the one I want (the US or at least the UK keyboard).

I've seen several sites that sell keyboards for older laptops, but what about a brand new one?

I am having a strange issue with a Sony netbook (VPCM12M1E) in that the keyboard seems to have a mind of its own, it used to be an intermittent issue but is more prevalent now. The issue is that if I try to type it enters the letters in capitals, if I press CapsLock it goes back to lower case letters. If I use the numbers, ie. 1234567890 they come out as !"£$%^&*(), whatever I do with CapsLock or NumLock. If I try \,./ I get |<>? However if I boot into safe mode it all seems to work fine.
So far I have restored back to factory, reloaded the drivers for the keyboard and pulled my hair out and there isn't too much left now. Have any of you guys any words of wisdom for me

My Sony PC is running Windows 8.1 - Model is SVL2412M1EB
When starting up the PC a start screen appears which requires a keyboard input (like pressing the Esc key) to take me to the Windows log-in screen.
This suddenly stopped working and I am now stuck on that initial screen and cannot get any further. I have checked and replaced the batteries in the keyboard and the mouse but no change.
I have also tried plugging in a USB keyboard and that didn't respond either.
Everything else seems to be working fine and Windows seems to continue loading but I cannot access anything as the screen is stuck on the initial image.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Sony Vaio all-in-one, keyboard not responding

Do your mouse and keyboard need to have the wireless connection re-set? I'm not sure how this is done with your model. Some models work by turning off the mouse then holding the central wheel down whilst switching it back on, holding it in front of the screen. Similarly for the keyboard but pressing the right control key while pressing the on button.
Have you tried restoring to a previous period in time when everything worked ok?

My friend's Sony Vaio laptop is giving keyboard errors - substituting the incorrect characters when typing.

For example if I type the name "George" it comes out "Ge6rge".

I know that there are ways to re-map keyboard keys. But if that was what was going on here, wouldn't it also affect the external keyboard?

I have looked to no avail for a case keyboard combo for my sony vaio tap 11. The keyboard that comes with the PC is just not very good and mine is starting to not a charge for any time at all. And if a case keyboard combo exists it would make the whole thing feel a little more like a laptop (one unit versus trying to sit on sofa and hold a separate keyboard and tablet) and still give me the flexibility of being able to use it just as a tablet.
Nothing probably exists for this but woohoo if it does.

· Typed in model number to download drivers forthe keyboard (just in case windows was lying to me) but its saying model is nolonger available (from Sony site – for both pc and keyboard)

· Checked to see that the blue tooth devices wherelisted on my computer as up till I sent the keyboard away all had been workingas regards to connection - nothing was listed there?

· Went to add a device (manually) this did notwork despite keyboard been detectable (according to instructions)

· Went to check that battery’s where charged fullybefore I put them in (suggested cause as to why they sometimes don’t connect oninstructions – put batteries in charger over night till I got a green light as Ihad not used them for a while, and tried again, still not working)

Hi, how are you.
My name is Mark, and I have some 5 year-old Sony Vaio PCG-K33 which recently fall onto my hands.
This laptop has a problem. It´s in its keyboard.
Several keys do not work. The D, F, etc, etc ....
The funny thing, is that I initially thought it was a keyboard problem, and ordered a new one.
When this one came, I set it up, and surprise! The same old problem.
So, does anyone have an idea on what this might be causing this? I installed new drivers for the laptop, but no positive answer. So, does someone has some experience on this?
It´s a Sony Vaio PCG-K33(9S1L) ...

I´ll appreciate any guiding answers...

Okay, so my sister's Sony Vaio VGN-NR120E has a damaged keyboard.
I found a place to buy the part (ebay, various other sites, etc. all sell them...) but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how the heck to get the keyboard off of the thing to replace it.

Has anyone replaced a keyboard on a Sony Vaio VGN-NR series before or knows how to do it? I'm fairly confident in my abilities but I want to avoid dismantling parts of the computer I don't need to, so any insight on how it's fastened on there would help.

Answer:Sony Vaio VGN-NR series keyboard replacement

Hi

sony laptops use (like most do) very small clips at the top of the keyboard, usually 3 or 4 of them along with screws from the bottom,, finding which screws is a trial, unlike Dell who mark the screws (k) for keyboard, (p) for palmrest etc etc.

Once you find out which screws they are get a credit card or similar and slide it across the top of the keyboard between the top and the case, you will feel the clips, use another card to gently lift the keyboard at the same time, be careful once done as their is a ribbon cable on a plug that connects to the motherboard, a gentle pull should pull it out if its a molex type, or else it may be a lift up the black bar type and slide the cable out, or slide a little lug on either side up (to the side etc) to remove the cable.

I hate to ask for help with something like this but , ofcourse.... I lost the drivers cd , Sony's site was no help to me, nor was Yahoo or Google, and I really need these drivers bad.

Its a Sony Vaio Infrared (wireless) keyboard and mouse, when the install box comes up its called an eHome?
But anyway the confusion only starts there since the drivers are supposedly country specific:

The reciever:
Sony Infrared Reciever
PCVA-IR8U
Made in the Phillipines
0000497770 (unknown #)

The Keyboard:
Sony Keyboard
Model VGP-WKB2
FCC ID: AQ6-VGP-WKB2
P/N may be 147914211 (and/or S/N 2909351 ,
they have them next to eachother)
ITE Accessory E 97600-b (?)
Canada 210 (?)
Made in China

The Mouse:
Sony
PCVA-MS2
P/N 179682471
Canada 210
Made in China

Ive searched hard for these and I cant believe theyre not just sitting there. Its Sony! They seem to be turning into Bums...... so for anyones effort, Im more than willing to trade some great graphics work for finding these for me. Signature, Logo, Photo Editing, anything I can help you with and Thanks in advance.

Dear All, I am a technical idiot so I would be grateful for any advice about an issue that has been occurring intermittently for about eighteen months now. It only relates to when I am online, not when I am offline working on a Word doc. Using certain keys results in very irritating and strange effects. If I use '1' a new page is opened up for 'support.google.com'. The number five wipes everything out (hence the reason I have used the word 'five' here rather than actually use that numeric key). '3' sometimes shoots me down to the bottom of the page. Using the letter 'p' in lower case results in a 'Developer Tools' box flashing up at me (but this does not occur if I use an uPPer case P). The back delete key (near the toP RH corner of the keyboard) will only delete one letter at a time, rather than keeP deleting when it is held down, as it should. I do not have any locks on (eg number or caPital lock). When this has occurred before it seems to last a few days and then cure itself. It is then okay for a few weeks but then starts all over again. I am getting ready to throw the damn thing out of the window - PLEASE HELP! Thank you.

I have a 4 year old Sony Vaio. Recently I installed an Adobe Acrobat Update which automatically downloaded McAfee Anti Virus. I de-installed that and the laptop wouldn't turn off subsequently so I did a successful start-up repair.

Since the start-up repair the keyboard cursor is intermittently jumping all over the place. It is not confined to any particularly key on the keyboard:- it will jump back a sentence; it will highlight a sentence; it will delete something by jumping to the undo button.

I have not had this problem before. I really do not want to use a mouse as I prefer the touchpad

Answer:Sony Vaio - Keyboard cursor moving all over screen after repair

Do a System Restore to a point before the problem began, if necessary from System Recovery Options on the Win7 disk or System Repair Disk

If this is the original factory install then I'd seriously consider doing a Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 since the factory install is the worst possible install of Win7 one can have, larded with bloatware and duplicate utilities which interfere with better versions built into Win7.

At the minimum I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware especially turning off all Startup items in msconfig except your AV which ideally should be one of the free lightweight ones like MSE or free Panda.

Hiya
I was using a thread on this Microsoft Support to fix my cd rom drive as it wasn't showing up on My Computer, I'd done it before and it worked perfectly fine
I went on the registry subkey:

And deleted 'upperfilters' as per instruction, however there was no 'lowerfilters'
After this I restarted my laptop to see if it worked and my touchpad and keyboard wouldn't work!
I've had to borrow a friends USB mouse but have no keyboard (currently on my iPhone)
I've had to go onto a guest account on my laptop as I am unable to type in my password on my administrator account
Any way I can fix this with just the USB mouse?!

Hi. For a while now I've been having thi<<<<s issue with my laptop that it is almost endlessly spamming the 'less than' (or 'more than' if I hold down shift) symbol. In the few weeks I've had this issue, it has seemingly just been> getting worse all the time. It used to not happen as often, and it used to go away by holding down any other button but>even that rarely works anymore. Right now (and this usually works), it's not happening while pressing down Ctrl key, but as soon as I release it, it goes off again.

It's also good to note that the button itself also does not work. No matter if the symbol is being spammed or not, nothing happens when I press the button.
<<
I'm also quite certain that this is not an issue with the button being unclean or stuck or anything. While I haven't been able to safely remove all the parts of the button, I have removed the cap and cleaned it all thoroughly wit>h pressurized air. Also, I used SharpKeys in order to attempt to turn off the button, but also does not work. I could not turn the symbol from spamming regardless of what I turned off from the list, and when I used the 'type key' function and waited until the symbol started spamming again, I did get a code, but when I tried to shut it down, the program simply said that the key is not identified.

Hi, during a house move the USB keyboard plugged into the Sony Vaio Laptop had a whole lot of keys depressed for some time, no idea what keys or what combination happened but as a result I can no longer enter a single number & caps lock has an inverted effect. I'm stuck at password login so cant get in as I have an alphanumeric password. With no numbers, means no assess

All keyboards are affected - I have tried using the laptop keyboard itself, the USB keyboard & now the onscreen keyboard but all have the following issues:
- When [Caps Lock] is on, all letters are in lower case.
- When [Caps Lock] is off, all letters are in Upper case
- The number pad does not work at all - whether [NumLk] is on or off - hitting any number button has no impact or key strike on all keyboards
- Even the numbers above the letters do not work - whether [NumLk] is on or off i.e. I always get "@" when I hit the "2" button regardless of number lock on or off or using Shift or any other combination

I've tried various combinations to correct this but cant find the right one. All help appreciated.
Thks Barbs

Answer:Solved: Sony Vaio Keyboard issue - CAPs inverted & numbers not working

Check the laptop's keyboard to make sure it doesn't have any stuck keys as they will override any USB keyboards plugged in.

Have you tried Safe Mode or Startup Repair: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows7/products/features/startup-repair
Test to see if the keyboard works in either mode. It may have switched keyboard layouts to another layout or language. If it works in the Startup Repair try System Restore. If it doesn't work re-check the internal laptop keyboard or even remove/disconnect it from the laptop and try a good USB keyboard.

Hi,
I have recently purchased a Sony Vaio Laptop with wifi support that is inbuilt or onboard. I already have a Asus P5E3 Deluxe motherboard at my home with ram 2 gb, 9800 gtx card and a quad core processor. Now, I connect this pc with a broadband connection at home running 1mbps speed. This motherboard also has a wifi onboard connection. What I am trying to do is setup this wifi connection so that my laptop can also connect to the internet wirelessly. For this I have installed the wifi driver of Asus (something called Asus WiFi-AP @n software) and configured it with giving it a proper connection name and a password. I have successfully done all the wifi network setup wizard on the pc and it is working well. Now the problem is that, my laptop is able to find this wifi connection but after sometime it gives an error saying to troubleshoot network connection and the wifi network disappears from the laptop and again i have to search for this wifi network and the cycle continues. Similarly, when I am trying to connect my Nokia e90 mobile phone with the pc via wifi, my phone is able to pickup the wifi connection and sometimes it is able to connect to the internet and I am also able to browse different websites but sometimes it gives me a gateway time out error. So, can anyone tell me how can i connect my sony vaio laptop to the internet wirelessly by using the Asus P5E3 Deluxe WiFi-AP @n connection? Also if possible, then please let me know how to connect my phone as well, which i... Read more

I'm not sure whether the processor fan on my Sony Vaio laptop is switching on or not, the case gets very hot.

Is there some way to force it to switch on? Perhaps a setting to tell the PC to turn it on at a lower temperature?

Answer:Sony Vaio Laptop Fan

Usually its temperature controlled, but most laptops run the fan briefly at the beginning of the boot process. If that is not happening, perhaps it needs replacement.

There is no setting that I am aware of to force it.

Question: Sony Vaio Laptop

My Sony VAIO laptop will only run in Safe Mode and BIOS. I have installed every possible OS on the planet including it's own restore disks. I have done every thing I can think of shy of new RAM and CPU and HD to figure out why it does this. Please Help !!

Answer:Sony Vaio Laptop

Hi there!

If it runs in Safe Mode, then it's most likely caused by a software or driver issue.

In safe mode
run MSCONFIG
Check "Selective Startup"
UN-CHECK "process config.sys file" (if there)
UN-CHECK "process autoexec.bat file" (if there)
UN-CHECK "Load Startup Group Items"

click apply, then OK or Close
reboot and see!

If there's a specific error message, please post it here!

Good Luck!

Question: Sony Vaio Laptop

Ive just bought a Sony Viao laptop of ebay, and the display is messed up. The picture is small in the middle of the screen even when the computer is booting up, the actual picture is aboul half the size of the screen. ow do i get the screen to fit the entire screen - lol that makes sense.

Answer:Sony Vaio Laptop

Sounds like the power invertor for the display is dying..(common problem in notebooks) If so, your need a replacement screen invertor for that model notebook, and someone capable of replacing it.. They can commonly be found on ebay..

Question: Sony Vaio laptop

I've just been given a Sony Vaio PCG-R505JSK. I've been informed this is a US model so does anybody knowa) is the UK equivalent the same or how do I find outb) when it comes to buying a battery, what should I be looking for?c) same as b), but for a docking stationd) Will any external usb cd/dvd drive work with it?Thanks in advance

Answer:Sony Vaio laptop

1. The keyboard is probably different to the UK version e.g. it won't have £ sign on it. You will be able to change the region in Regional Options in Control Panel but have to compare it to a UK one to find out where all the symbols etc. are.2. click here may be able to supply a battery. A google search will bring up other suppliers.3. Again try the one at 2. or google for others. Sony have their own site at click here4. Not sure what version of USB it has. I would think most would work but you might have to fit a PCMCIA/Cardbus USB 2.0 card to exploit the full potential try click here for this.

Answer:Laptop SONY vaio

What is the model of this Vaio, and roughly how old is it ?

Do you get to see the BIOS screen when it starts - that's the one that says Sony Vaio or somesuch all over it - or do you not get any screen at all ?  If you do get the BIOS screen have a look and see what key it says for 'Setup'. This is usually either 'F2' or 'Delete' but it does vary. Then re-boot and press that key. If you saw the BIOS screen, this should now take you into the BIOS itself. The trackpad doesn't work in here, you need to use the arrow keys to move around. Move along the top line to 'Exit' and press 'Enter'. this will bring up a screen which among other options says 'Restore defaults and exit'. Select this one - with the arrow keys - then press 'Enter' again. This guarrantees that at least you have the system defaults set. The system will now try to re-boot. If it does, great. If not . . .

If this laptop is over three years old the battery may have died and I have known cases where a dead battery stopped a laptop starting even though plugged into the mains. Try taking the battery out and starting it just with the mains charger plugged in.

Post back and let us know how you get on with this. It may be that this Vaio is heading for its final reward but there is no doubt data on the hard drive that you may well want to recover which is not an overly difficult task.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop.
When I turn it on, the fan spins but shuts down after a few seconds, then never starts up again. It only spins at startup.
Anyone got any tips?

Answer:Sony Vaio Laptop Fan

Normal.

The fan on a laptop will run for a few seconds until the temperature monitoring software loads, then it only runs when it gets hot enough.

Unless the laptop is overheating, you don't have a problem?

Hello Everyone,I've got a Sony Vaio VGN-FE11S with 1GB RAM and want to upgrade. The Sony site is fairly helpful and says the followingMemory Type SO-DIMM - 533Mhz (DDR2) which is helpful enough. I've found something to that specification on Dabs. However when I click to buy RAN from the Sony shop (too expensive), the ram that they try to sell me is the same but is 667mhz.I therefore have 2 questions...Can I buy the faster 667mhz and it still work? Can I get any faster than this? Also the maximum memory is 2GB, and I have 2 slots. Would I be better off buying 2 1GB, or 1 2GB and having a spare slot? It's the same price either way. Thanks in advance.

Hi all. I've got this Sony Vaio laptop that I'm trying to get it to work. A friend of mine said he used it for parts, so it is missing a few hardware pieces. However, I am having problems getting it to run.

It is missing a hard drive, and the RAM pieces.

When I plug it in, the power icon works, shows a green light.

The product name is VPCF136FM, the model is PCG-81115L.

When I turn the machine on, screen doesn't turn on. It just stays black, I can hear the GPU fan turn on (It takes about 15 seconds for the GPU fan to even turn on), but no matter how long I leave the laptop on, the screen just stays black, it does nothing. I was thinking maybe the GPU was taken out, but I later learned the graphics card is basically embedded into the motherboard, so you can't remove it.

Anyone know why the screen isn't working? Or should I just throw it in the trash?

Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Answer:Need Help With Sony Vaio Laptop

Without RAM it will never run. You MUST have at least one RAM module.

You don't mention where you are located. Here are some possible sources for the Sony part and claimed equivalents in the USA:

Question: Sony Vaio Laptop

Does anybody know where I can find a service manual for a Sony Vaio PCG-FR720 Notebook? I wanna take a look at the guts.

Answer:Sony Vaio Laptop

Start here http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?DIRECTOR=DOCS&PRODTYPE=24&template_id=1&region_id=1
In the 3rd section, I can input Vaio, the PCG-FR series but there is no 720 (probably because US is selected and you are in another country).

I have a sony vaio laptop (bought it 2nd hand ) have had it about two years and it was about 1 - 1.5 years when I bought it. It badly overheats - and the dc jack (mains socket) is now loose. I have had a quote of £100 (£85 + £15 pickup/return) for these repairs - which I was willing to go with (the man found that the mother board has been burnt and would need replacing for another £100. I can't remember the model number of the laptop Its a 'PCsomething...8jlm' (i think!)- but it has a 17" screen and is a 2.6 gig (processor?) Details on laptop - with repair man !. Based on these sketchy details, can anyone advise me whether they think my machine is worth the spend, cos I said to the man I could probably buy another for not much more, he said yes, but it would not be a vaio. Indian guy - very genuine. Wondered to have a go at fixing it myself and buying the parts - I reckon a lot of the price is on labour - and I have a welding kit - but I read somewhere that this sort of thing is not for the faint hearted!..anyone got any advice on whether I should get this fixed?

Question: Sony Vaio Laptop

does anyone have any idea where I can get a replacement power jack for a sony vaio laptop that is 5 years old or so. I mainly use it to browse the web, and check email, (buying a new one seems impractical) and currently the power cord won't register as connected. I checked the solder points on the power jack and everything looks good. No cracks or anything. If you hold the tip of the power cord into the jack extremely tight, it will atleast flash the lights like it detects the connection. Anyone have any other thoughts?

Thanks

Mike
