Windows Server 2012 Cannot Update: Controlled by Administrator?

Question: Windows Server 2012 Cannot Update: Controlled by Administrator?

We have a server that was put in by a company that likely no longer exists, and may not have even been a legitimate company in the first place. (Server came with the OS installed, but we did not get any documentation on the authenticity of the Windows license, nor is there a sticker on the machine... seems fishy to me.)

The server runs Windows Server 2012.
It will not update, as it says that updates are disabled, and does not allow me to enable them, as they are 'controlled by the administrator'.

What's worse, is that any computers joined to the domain that this server controls, are also plagued by the inability to update.

There appears to be the following problems:
1) Phantom update server - The computers that are members of the domain try and update from some source elsewhere than the regular Windows Update servers from Microsoft.
2) The computers do not let me change update settings if they are joined to the domain. They say the setting is 'controlled by the administrator'.
3) The server will not get updates, as they are disabled, and does not let me enable them because they are 'controlled by the administrator.'

I am the administrator so that doesn't make sense.

I can't seem to figure out why this is the case, as I went into the group policy editor on the server and changed all the Windows Update settings I could find back to 'not configured'.

I restarted the server, and the workstations, and still, I cannot enable updates on the server, nor will the workstations update properly.

Update:
Found some sneaky settings hiding in group policy that were under 'system' instead of the other category I was looking in.

Now it says that the update status is 'download only' in the server manager window that pops up at logon... but if I try and go to the Windows Update settings in the control panel, the window just freezes.

Preferred Solution: Windows Server 2012 Cannot Update: Controlled by Administrator?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've recently setup and configured a deployment share using "MDT 2010 Update 1", although recently I discovered that after deploying "Windows 8 Enterprise" and creating a new user account with administrative privileges, the new user account does not display the "run as administrator" option the right-click menu, any ideas as to why this is occurring?

Please note, I haven't confirmed if this same issue occurs with other deployed operating systems yet.

Hi Folks,

So we have a couple of 2012 servers here at work. I want to bring them up to date with the R2 build. Our backup software is finally compatible. I know with the 8 to 8.1 update, you just got it thru the windows store. How do I upgrade to R2 without downloading the ISO?

Thanks.

It is an entire new OS.

Pop in disc, format, and go.

You need to purchase licenses for 2012R2 unlike 8 to 8.1.

Hi there
Will the W2012 Server get the 8.1 type of update --anybody know. There seems to be a deafening silence on W2012 server which IMO is strange as it is STREETS ahead of the really horrible W2008 server.

W2012 server has options though already to avoid the whole metro stuff but it would be nice to add some of the proposed customisation features to it.

I'm also not hearing anything about whether W8 ENTERPRISE will also be upgraded -- IMO this is MORE important even than the HOME versions if Ms wants businesses to adopt W8. Boot to the standard desktop is really a MUST for businesses - by also pinning standard programs to the quick launch task bar and / or the desktop a lot of problems of User training can be avoided.

Cheers

Answer:Windows 2012 server to get update or not - anybody

I am wondering this myself. Also, how will future support work for users who do not upgrade to 8.1? Nothing in 8.1 looks to have much of an effect on someone who uses a SMR and the desktop exclusively. Should I bother upgrading and risk having some type of issue with my work PC?
I recently rolled out a 6 PC trial with Windows 8 and Start8 (Start8 with GPO), and am really concerned 8.1 could break something with GPO or Start 8. Ugg, MS.

Download Windows 10 Client Connector Update for Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 as it now available at Microsoft.

Windows Server Essentials Connector is software that helps you connect your PC or Mac client to Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Windows Server Essentials Experience server role enabled. It also enables and manages key client-side functionality of Windows Server Essentials Experience. On a PC, it provides client backup, a tray icon and the Launchpad, the Dashboard for management of remote servers, and a VPN profile with the capability of auto-dialing and monitoring client health from the server side. On a Mac, it provides health monitoring and the Launchpad.

Get it from Microsoft here.

Hello, all!

I am preparing to get a Windows Server set up in the near future here at a mission school I just started working at.

Here's what I am planning on running:
Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, under which I will run 3x virtual machines (Server 2012 Standard, pfSense, and Untangle).

Since I am needing to get this implemented as soon as possible, I am trying to decide what to do, considering Windows Server 2012 R2's release is just around the corner.

I'm wondering... Is 2012 R2 going to be a completely different OS, in that you need to purchase a separate license key to run it if you already have 2012? Or will it be more like a service pack?

Also, can the preview version be upgraded to release once it is released?

The reason I am asking is that I am needing to get this set up as soon as possible, and need to know how to proceed. Should I use Hyper-V preview and Standard preview (if there is one... Only seen datacenter so far) then upgrade to release and purchase licenses, or is there something else that would be preferable?

Thanks!

Answer:Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2 Questions

2008 R2 and 2012 R2 are new operating systems that require you to purchase them. I believe 2012R2 has gone RTM recently, which means in a few months you should be able to get it.

There are a lot of VM improvements in 2012, and even more in 2012R2. If you're just running a basic setup it's not needed to hold out for, unless you're not under any time constraints, then why not. Here is a list of the major R2 features.

I'm not sure how well pfSense and Untange will run in a Hyper-V VM. The Gen 2 VM and improved Linux support of R2 may be needed for better operation.

It's my fault,I did it. I did get rid of some un-needed prorgams.

Click Start, search for Run, then type regedit in it.

Go to, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

You will see a Dword value named, DisableTaskMgr there. Its value must be changed to 1. Edit it and change its Dword value to 0 and it should work fine. Hope that helps

Hello,
I created the following performance counter using logman.exe.

logman.exe create counter US_Triton_Perf_Log -b 9/23/2015 09:30:00 -e 9/30/2099 18:30:00 -r -s $server -si $frequence -cf $folder\$server.txt -f $logtype  -o C:\local\logs\Perfout_$Server --a -v mmddhhmm  -rf  $max_duration

When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers 2008/2012, the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at 930PM and stops running everyday at 430PM. This works perfectly fine as intended. However, When I do this for a Windows
2003 server, my created counter is very different.
For example, in this case, I have set to the counters to start at 930AM and end at 1830PM, because I have set a maximum duration of 9 hours, the job terminates and begins on the next day, since I have the repeat option on. However, this does not apply to
our 2003 server; logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday. In addiiton, I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time. It actually does not start at all. I also notice that the jobs on all windows
2003 servers are created in a pending status, which then prevents me from removing the counter remotely.

I would like to know if windows 2003 is capable of working like my win 2008/2012 servers using logman, and if historically, the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task.

Both Jobs are using the same criteria, but a... Read more

Hey there,

As often said...long time lurker. Recently installed a copy of WS2012 Datacenter I received to play with and learn more about. I have pretty much zero Windows Server background knowledge (I don't count WHS...which I have running as well).

So, my question...I created a Storage Pool, and then a couple Volumes, and then Shares.

My embarrassing noob question...how do I access these Shares?

I can locate the server on my network, and know the IP address of it.

I created a User account so that I don't need to use the Admin account for general use.

My goal:
Access the Share I created from my MacBook Air so that I can read/write files from it.

Thanks in advance for tolerating my WS "noobness."

Answer:Accessing Windows Server 2012 Server Pool Shares

Not sure how to access it from a mac, but on a windows box you can just run \\%servername%\%sharename% and it'll launch it in an explorer window. Should be some sort of network browser on the mac to allow you to type in the unc.

Hi
We have an issue with this security update, as it keeps on failing to install in windows update.
I receive error code: 851A004A
What I have did was to manually install the the update from the MS site, and the machine shows it has been installed and when I ran updates again, windows updates picks this security update again even though its installed.
I have removed SQL server 2012 developer edition  and all of its components, restarted the machine. Did windows updates and then installed SQL 2012 again and manualy installed KB3045321 and still after running windows updates, windows shows tries
to install this update.
My company runs reports from WSUS regarding failed windows updates. This machine appears in the report even though its installed. I have tried hiding this update and still it appears in the report.
I then built another machine, did windows updates, installed SQL server 2012 developer edition ran windows updates and again it fails to install the security update. It gives the same error message 851A004A. Again installed update manually and still
windows updates tries to install this update again.
Any ideas ?

Hi,

This is my first posting and I apologize if I am doing this incorrectly or in the wrong place! I have a major issue and have now for about a year. Last August maybe sooner, my boyfriend installed something called Keylogger Spy 7.1 on my laptop. I purchased my laptop brand new from HP in June 2015. It is a personal laptop for home use only. Since then so much has happened I could not even begin to explain it all. I know that I have been able to click on things like inspect and see people typing from something called "chromium" in one instance I was typing in a quickbooks application and a comment was typed asking if they were sure it was a good idea to share this with the entire web. , I also do not appear to be the administrator of my computer and have a domain account somehow registered to it, also my hard drive now seems to be crashing and it happened after I uninstalled one of my external hard drives from my computer, (I have three external hard drives all of which became inaccessible after the keylogger installed) So I believe my boyfriend also did something to stop me from accessing them. I know whatever is happening is happening through my windows account and I believe some form of active directory. It also accesses my telephone I believe as well. Malware and virus scans show nothing and I am at my wits end, I think that somehow it may also involve my internet router. I've restored to factory settings several times, but it keeps coming back. Hi
I am working with windows 8 and I have installed SQL server 2007 and visual studio 2010. Now I want to upgrade these setups to SQL server 2012 and visual studio 2012. what is the advantages of what i want to do and how can i do it easily without corrupting the operating system? Please help.

Answer:Installation of sql server 2012 and visual studio 2012

SQL Server has an upgrade option that is pretty painless. Just run the setup file from your 2012 installation media and click the upgrade option. It will ask you what instance to upgrade, run some checks, and then upgrade it for you.

Visual Studio is a little different. If you install 2012 without uninstalling 2010 first, you will simply just have both versions to choose from. You can completely uninstall 2010 before installing 2012 by finding your 2010 installation file and adding the uninstall and force switches when running it(ex. "C:\vs_ultimate.exe /uninstall /force").

If you keep 2010, 2012 will ask you if you wish to import your settings and whatnot from 2010. If you uninstall 2010, 2012 will just have it all when you open it for the first time.

My school gives us server 2012 standard for free. I am wondering if it's possible to install it as 2012 essentials with the same features as essentials kind of like how win pro had every thing home had. Or are the features of server essentials not included in standard? (Features like full pc back up and the dashboard like whs 2011)

Answer:can you setup server 2012 standard as 2012 essentials?

Different media for the install, Server Standard and Datacenter use the same media. Essentials has it's own install disk and Foundation and Storage Server share the same media.

I'm tired of having multiple pop mail accounts on different servers, which means I can only access it at home, and paying a premium for those on my web hotel, so I've decided to put up my own mail server. This will be sitting at a nice 100mb direct connection to the Internet at an ISP (for free ).

But first I have to build, install and get to know the server.

Hardware will probably be a server motherboard with a restart function (in case of power loss), a not too expensive cpu, 1GB ram and 100+ GB hdd.
(Any suggestions for server mobo/cpu/ram combos appreciated, as my knowledge is mostly non-server)

Then I'm wondering what OS to put on this server, and which mail server programs to use.

The OS has to be secure, have a little footprint, be easily remote controlled and be easy to install new programs. (And Windows is out of the question if not on the first demand, then at least on the second)
My knowledge of *nix is rather limited, as I've only used it on the university and then only for simple tasks, so the biggest demand will be that it should be easy to use, which means gui support.

I like the "apt get" function of debian, as it'll be easier to deploy new packages when I decide I want to expand the use of the server (possible web server++), but I've also heard good things about freebsd and fedora core.

As for the mail server suite security is the top priority, with ease of use coming in at a close second.

Answer:Need help setting up remote controlled mail server from scratch

Remote control (or anything done remotely) is something you get for granted with a Unix-like OS..

For a secure OS out of the box and ideology wise I would recommend OpenBSD, NetBSD or Solaris (you can forget about the ease of use and install with these though)

As for mail server software (actually the "mail server" is in several independent parts on Unixes) you have the three main choices of the "MTA" part: Sendmail, Postfix and Qmail. Sendmail is the most common, but complex and difficult to configure and debug. Postfix is well-known and supported and I would recommend that. Qmail is the weirdo alternative..

The mail storage format you want is called maildir (separate files for every message (originated from Qmail)) as opposed to mbox (one big file). Mbox is the default in Sendmail and Postfix setups but you can set them to use maildir.

The mail folders are a feature of the IMAP daemon and I am pretty sure all of them support it.

Antivirus support is best on BSD and Linux systems - you can use several versions of commercial AVs (some are free for non-Windows use) and throw in open source scanners too.

The system I would set up would be:
OpenBSD/NetBSD (Open is more secure but Net has better compatibility)
Postfix (Sendmail is just eevil)
Spamassassin (The anti-spam program of choice unless you want to cough up a lot of money for a commercial package)
Several virus scanners (F-Secure is free for "workstation use", ClamAV is ... Read more

What version of server 2012 do you have? Also what client operating systems do you have? Windows 7 Home premium, professional, ultimate?

This can affect what services you can offer to clients.

Hello 8forums,

Really great forum here and I'm glad to join. If I posted this in the wrong section I apologize.

Okay now here's my problem. I'm currently trying to setup Windows Server 2012 for my dad. The main thing it will be used for is storage of movies, photos and backing up Excel documents for work. This is a copy a friend burned him onto a disk and is currently NOT activated. He wanted to check it out before purchasing the license. I have installed it onto an old HP Pavilion a1640n and everything went fine with installation but, now that it is installed I cannot connect his Win8 computer to it. I have Googled this and found a method but, it doesn't work. I'm told to open a browser and enter in the address bar " HTTP://Server-name/connect " (Server-name replaced with then name of his server) and I should get a connector software download page. I do not get this software download page I just get a server not found page. I have tried entering other possibilities into the address bar, too (192.168.0.xxx/connect, adding .com etc.) nothing works. If I can get any help with this it would be appreciated.

I have tried:

Completely reinstalled Windows Server 2012
Reinstalled Ethernet drivers on the WS2012 box

Things they may be causing the problem:

As I said the Windows Server 2012 is not activated.
The WS2012 box is stuck on public network type and the W8 box is stuck on private network type.
The WS2012 box does not show up on my network on the W8 box but,... Read more

Anybody know of a good, hopefully free, AV that works on Server 2012?

Answer:AV for Windows Server 2012?

Most of the free av doesn't run on server. As far as paid av for the most part you generally need to use the business version of the software which also generally starts in 5 packs.

To my knowledge ms fixed it so you can't run mse on 2012 as it would install on 08.

Like Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 too has been released to manufacturing today. That means the final code is complete and we are delivering it to our hardware and software vendor partners this week. We will also make the software available to our volume licensing customers in the next couple of weeks.
Details: TechNet Blogs.

Answer:Windows Server 2012 has RTM'd

I'm actually looking for forward to this than I am to the client version. I need to replace my Server 2008R2 install with 2012 ASAP. There are a few features that I am very interested in, and it will save me money by not having to go with a third party software for the functionality.

Might be on TechNet now as well, downloading it now and putting on a spare hard drive. It really looks like Microsoft has addressed every major point on contention with desktop operation even if they didn't put back the Start Menu. I always wondered why Shutdown wasn't in the Power Menu to begin with since this was configurable with in the registry in 8.

Just to note, this is the preview and not the RTM.

I can guess the answer, no, but you never know. Is it possible to upgrade Windows 10 Pro 64-bit to Windows Server 2012 R2? What happens if you run the setup from Windows 10 Pro? You will be given the choice to upgrade, or be prompted to restart and do a clean installation? As far as I know, Windows Server 2012 R2 is the server counterpart of Windows 10. They even share most of the drivers. Assuming you have a computer running Windows 10 Pro and want to convert that to a small server, running say Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation Edition. Is that possible, or you have to format and clean install? Hopefully the drivers will be the same as in Windows 10.

Alternatively, is there any upgrade/addon to add server aspects in Windows 10 Pro (eg mail server, file server or HTTP server)? Is there an equivalent of Windows Home Server for Windows 10?

Thank you for your time.

Answer:Is it possible to upgrade Windows 10 to Server 2012 R2?

No. Windows Server 2012 R2 is the server version of Windows 8.1

The server version of Windows 10 has not yet been released, but it will be called Windows Server 2016.

And no, you cannot upgrade a desktop OS to a Server OS.

Hey guys,

This is the first time using the forum so I apologize if this has been put in the incorrect place. My brother recently installed Hyper V Server 2012 r2, which boots up everytime I start my laptop. I just want help in how to completely remove the software and help get back my Windows 8. Neither me or him know how to get back to windows 8.

Thanks in advance guys.

Answer:Help with Windows Hyper V Server 2012 R2

Well, you must have a bootable Windows 8 DVD or USB. Go to the BIOS settings, select to have the DVD or USB device as first device. Then it should say "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD..." if you have a DVD or it will show the OEM or Windows logo directly (USB). When you are prompted for the installation type, choose Custom. Make sure you have backed up your files. Delete every partition of Disk 0 and then choose the Unallocated Space to install.

I hope this helps you.

I have it installed, and it boots to the dashboard, and starts the"Set Up Windows Server 2012 Essentials" dialog, it leads to "Error occurred during Installation" and says to reboot, or save logs, I have a copy of the logs files, if anyone would like them.

I'll have around 10-15 computers plus some media players connecting to it. server hardware isn't a problem as I have that.

Thanks in advance

PS it will be running under Windows Hyper-V Server or ESXi most likely. May have it run on the bare metal instead and use the Hyper-V Role. Not sure yet on that one.

Answer:which version of Windows Server 2012 will I need?

The cheapo ones don't have computer limits but user limits of 15 and 25 but do NOT have the hyper-v role. Essentials supports 1 socket only.

I'm finally getting around to doing this.
I'm making a home server running the full version of Windows Server 2012 r2 (free as a student).
The server has been built for a while with a clean install of windows server on it, I'm just now getting to configuring it.

The first thing I want this server to do is to do real time backups of all my pc's and probably sync those with a crash plan account.
Basically I'm just going for data security and redundancy here.
My PC's all use RAID mirrors (except my laptop).
My home/file server will be another local copy.
And CrashPlan will be my offsite copy.

If I can set this server up as a NAS, crash plan has a feature that it will back up files to a folder or another pc, so I could use that to back up to my server, and then the sever backs up to my crash plan account.
Or I have read about WHS having features where it keeps so many daily weekly and monthly backups and images.

Problem is, is that I have never used Windows Server until now and I'm having a lot of trouble with it.
I added a SMB share on the server.
On my desktop I used the command "net use" and added my nas and I can now view it by typing \\NAS in windows explorer but all shared files are inaccessible I can only see root level files.

Other than what I've mentioned I've made very little progress. There also seems to be little information in the way of doing something like this with windows server on google... Read more

Answer:Help Setting Up Windows Server 2012 as a NAS

When you say: On my desktop I used the command "net use" and added my nas and I can now view it by typing \\NAS in windows explorer but all shared files are inaccessible I can only see root level files.

"net use" is used to map a UNC path "\\NAS" to a drive letter...so if you type: net use n: \\NAS\Share

It should map the share to the n: drive...

Are you using a Domain or are you doing everything through local user accounts? You probably don't have permissions setup correctly...if you're not on a domain you have to create and use accounts on the NAS when connecting and you have to setup the correct file and folder permissions for that account...

Answer:T61 - Windows Server 2012 Datacenter

Hello,

From looking at the system requirements here on Microsoft's web site, it looks like the T61 meets the requirements for running Windows Server 2012, but that's largely because Microsoft doesn't seem differentiate between requirements for the Foundation, Essentials, Standard and Datacenter editions.

Personally, I'd suggest going with the biggest, fastest 2012-vintage (or newer) laptop that I could find, such as a W520 or W530.

Hi everyone,

I've been using a VPN to connect to my home network from elsewhere for a few months. It's set up as follows:

PPTP
Maximum Strength Encryption
EAP-MSCHAP-v2 Authentication
Now I find out that MSCHAPv2 authentication has been broken and is no longer considered secure (even by Microsoft), so I want to change the protocol I'm using to make it secure.

However, I've spent 3 hours now researching this and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to use a better protocol on my Windows Server 2012 home server. I've tried setting up PEAP authentication (still PPTP) a la Microsoft's recommendation document, but it requires a certificate. I've created a self-signed certificate but it seems I can't issue certificates (via this method) without being a member of a domain, so I'm stuck. I can't even get started with L2TP since I can't find the option for it.

My question is this: Is there a way to set up a secure VPN server using Windows Server 2012 without a domain? If so, how do I do this?

Thanks.

I enabled the WIFI feature and desktop experience via the features and rolles, yet the network controller is not recognized in the device manager.I tried to download intel network driver from here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/detail_desc.aspx?DwnldID=21694but it wont install, says "no intel (r) adapters are present in this computer".Just for the sport, I tried to install the graphic and audio driver [which are less important to me] downloaded from this site, here:http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds040009and yet nothing, here I get "This computer does not meet minimum requirements for installing software".When I boot to the windows 8.1 os - everything works perfect. Any suggestions? Recently, Microsoft included the Windows Server 2012 R2 RTM on their Dreamspark basic site. Currently, I'm running the R1 version on a virtual machine using VMware Player. How can I upgrade the R1 to R2 while keeping all of my files and settings using VMware?

Do I just boot from the ISO (I haven't downloaded it yet) (CD/DVD settings inside R1 VM) and then it will detect and upgrade R1 or I have no choice but to create another VM and then manually replicate my files and settings from R1 VM? I really don't want to do the latter since it's very time consuming. I hope someone has thoughts on how to do this.

Answer:Windows Server 2012 R2 upgrade over R1?

Wow, I just redirected VMware to the R2 iso and just followed the simple steps and I'm now currently upgrading on VMware. I didn't know it was possible to do that. I'll mark this thread as solved if there are no issues with the in place upgrade. Hopefully, everything works fine.

Update: everything went smoothly and now enjoying Server 2012 R2. Sadly, no colorful backgrounds in R2 unlike 8.1. All of my "3D" Metro App games like Pinball FX2, Jetpack Joyride, etc. work perfectly after the in place upgrade .

I have a Synology NAS that I am planning on using as storage for our Windows Server 2012 backups and have a couple questions:

1) I thought I remembered reading that if you are going to use the built in Server 2012 backup that connecting the NAS as an iscsi lun was the way to go, correct?

2) If I create a iscsi target on my NAS, it has to be created separate from the main volume on the NAS? Meaning that I cannot just use all the space and allocate it to the main volume because that would leave no storage space for the iscsi target.

I think that is what I could use some clarification on for now, thanks.

PowerISO - Create, Burn, Mount, Edit, Compress, Encrypt, Split, Extract ISO file, ISO/BIN converter, Virtual Drive

I am going to be doing a much needed upgrade at a office taking them from SBS 2003 to Windows Server 2012 Std. This should be more simple than most as they use it is a domain controller, and file/print server. No Exchange, sharepoint, etc.

They do have one program that uses SQL on the server but I already have a plan for migrating that over.

So, do you guys have any recommended document on how to do this migration? Seems like I can mainly treat it as Server 2003 to Server 2012 and just leave the SBS components out but wanted to check with you guys.

Thanks!

Answer:SBS 2003 to Windows Server 2012 Std

I believe you have to cleanup Exchange from the domain, I used the package from sbsmigration.com when I did my migration (SBS2003 to 2008R2)

My office computer runs Windows XP Professional SP3 (see below), and I'm connected to our new server running Server 2012 Essentials. For the last month or so, at 4:00 every afternoon my computer loses its connection to the server. I have two programs that access the server, and both give me error messages and freeze, and I need to restart to get back to normal. I don't pay much attention to my clock, so I'm typically on the phone with a customer trying to accomplish something when my system has a meltdown.

The same error messages come up each time:

The Security System detected an attempted downgrade attack for server cifs/DELLSERVER. The failure code from authentication protocol Kerberos was "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.
(0xc000005e)".

The Security System could not establish a secured connection with the server cifs/DELLSERVER. No authentication protocol was available.
According to the error logs, this happens in the evenings and early mornings too, although not every day. When it does happen during non-work hours, it looks like it's consistently an hour apart (1:10AM, 2:10AM; 4:10AM, etc. or 5:35PM, 6:35PM, 7:35PM). The error will show up 3 or 4 times in a row, then everything will work fine for several hours.

I do not have any idea where to start to fix this. To my knowledge, I'm the only one with this issue, so I'm pretty sure it's a problem specific to my machine

I highly recommend a call to Microsoft or a reseller to get the correct answer.

Making an assumption that you have 200 devices across all sites, 200 sounds right if per device CALs in use. If per user CALs, 1000.

Again ..contact the source and get the true answer!

I am testing windows 10 pro. Answer:windows edge and server 2012 RWA

If you open EDGE and select the three dots in the upper right of the window. a drop down menu is displayed. Select open with internet explorer and the internet explorer browser will open. You will have to accept the active x and then set the RWA web page to compatibility mode and now you can connect to the corporate office RWA APP and to your assigned desktop.

I'm having a lot of trouble trying to configure user home directories on a Windows 2012 R2 server running active directory.

What I've currently done is created a share on the drive called "home" and made it read/write accessible to "authenticated users".

In the user profile where I set up the user home directory, I select the drive letter (this case H and put in the path as "\\fs1\home\%username%".

On my windows 2008 server, after I hit apply, it would create a folder with the username in the home share that I created. It doesn't do this on the 2012 server. Am I doing something wrong? I verified that \\fs1\home\ was accessible remotely, and it is.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Answer:Windows server 2012 home directories

You need to make permission changes twice:

One at the share. Sounds like you have this one already. This basically grants users rights to read/write data in \\fs1\home.

The second permission change is at the folder level -- so locally on \\fs1 on whatever folder is represented by the share home. You need to make some fancy permission edits here, but it's not that bad. You're going to give Authenticated Users rights to read/write to the folder, but you'll probably want to break inheritance to make sure authenticated users don't have rights to traverse the folder structure (users only get access to their home directory).

Here's an MS KB Article describing the permissions.

On a side note -- it works fine on 2012. I recently set this up in my environment, too.

I've got MBSA 2.3 (in fact, it's 2.3.2211.0) installed on a Windows 8.1 Laptop and I'm trying to scan a Windows 2012 R2 server against MS patch catalogue.
When I try I get this error:
"Computer has an older version of the client and security database demands a newer version. Current version is and minmum required version is ."
That is a copy and paste of the error. No version numbers are listed and minimum has a typo in it.
Installing MBSA onto the server fairs no better with a dialog box showing a script error.

Trying to figure out the best server software to get for my needs.....

I built 2 mini pc servers using the following parts below.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856101134&Tpk=N82E16856101134
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116503&Tpk=N82E16819116503
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239289&Tpk=N82E16820239289 x2
I successfully got both up and running with 3 VMs each using MS Windows Server 2012 Standard Evaluation. I built these for testing purposes but they have been perfect for my needs. But now my activation period is set to expire, though I did to a successful rearm for now.

I want to permanently activate windows server but Im a bit confused on what version I should try to get. I came across a copy that says "Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Standard - 2 CPUs/2VM Base License", but not sure what the 2 cpu/2vm actually means and what the actual limitations are for that. Then there is the "Windows Server Standard 2012 64-Bit 5 Client". Does that mean I can install this copy on up to 5 separate pcs? And if so again is there a limitation on the number of VMs I can run. I was looking to plan on adding a larger server to run up to an additional 20 VMs to the 2 servers (6 VMs) Im running now in the near future.

Just trying to figure out my best options.

Answer:Windows 2012 Server option question

Server 2012 (Standard or Datacenter) per license, is for 2 CPU sockets. The only difference between Standard and Datacenter is the amount of VM licenses you are granted with it.

A single Server 2012 Standard license grants you up to 2 VM's on a 2 CPU socket system.

You can run up to 2 VM's with one license as long as the underlying OS is only running Hyper-V/ESXi. If you run anything else , you can only run 1 VM.

So for example:

Install server onto physical box. Enable Hyper-V but nothing else -> I can run 2 VM's
Install ESXi onto physical box. I can run 2 Windows Server 2012 VM's
Install server onto physical box. Do not enable any roles, but share files -> I can run 1 VM
Install server onto physical box. Enabled File Services role-> I can run 1 VM
Install server onto physical box. Enable File Services, Active Directory, and DNS -> I can run 1 VM

You're other option is to download Hyper-V Server 2012 R2, which does not require any licenses but requires being managed remotely or via cmd line, then just use your Standard license to run 2 VM's. That way you know for sure you are compliant.

If the server has 4 CPU sockets, you need 2 Standard Licenses and can go up to 4 VM's. But if you have a system this powerful, I would just buy Datacenter and be allowed unlimited VM's.

Answer:Refresh PC and Reset PC not in Windows Server 2012 ????

Should it be? What may be a great client feature may not necessarily be advisable for a server. Also how likely are you to muck up a server with too many installs and uninstalls?

Is it possible to install Windows Server 2012 R2 install on my T5600?
As of now, I cannot get the install disk to recognize the HD.

Answer:T5600 Windows Server 2012 R2 install?

You'll need to put the drivers for the drive controller onto a flash drive, pause the installation with F6 and insert the flash drive to load the drivers.
What type of hard drive (SAS, etc.) is in the system, and what model controller?

Hey everyone,

I am building out a Server 2012 box for an organization and have yet to play with licensing for RDS (Remote Desktop Services - the replacement of Terminal Services) on this new version.

Could someone give me a rundown of the licensing I will need for the box? I am guessing I will need Client Access Licenses for each user, plus an RDS license for each? Or do RDS licenses supercede standard CAL licenses?

The environment will have about 12-13 regular users in a domain, with about 9-10 of those needing to remote desktop in for all of their work going forward.

Just a little uncertainty here. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Licensing needed for a Windows Server 2012 RDS box?

RDS is essential Terminal Services. I believe its all user Cals now device cals are not recommanded any more.

If your doing RDS Gateway to individual desktop (physical machines You need nothing)

If your doing RDS VDI you need to license the OS plus VDI cals for said OS's.(Change in MS licensing)

I installed Windows Server 2012 on a new machine and for some reason, the install put the "System Reserved" partition on one disk (the data disk) and the "System Boot" partition on another disk (my intended system boot disk). The Server 2012 install disk does not have a repair option, so I tried a Windows 8 install disk and used the repair feature of that disk.

I disconnected the data disk and ran the repair and it looks like it has worked. The server 2012 machine can boot and seems to run ok, but the repair installed the files that would normally be on the "System Reserved" partition onto the boot disk partition of C, so my C: drive only has one partition and it contains all the boot files and OS files.

My question is that is it ok to have all the files on one partition, or am I going to run into potential problems down the line.

I was having trouble in installing .net Framework 3.5 in Windows Server 2012. I tried many methods and did not work. At last I used the following method that worked.
I searched internet for many months and at last I found the following files. I copied the files in C:\35 folder. Any folder name will do.

Now :

Run Powershell as administrator and run the command below.
Install-WindowsFeature Net-Framework-Core -source "c:\35"
I waited 10 minutes and it installed. At last I have managed to install it.
I hope this helps many people.

Answer:How can I uninstall IE11 from Windows Server 2012 R2?

Hi,
Based on my knowledge, in Windows server 2012 R2, IE 11 is preinstalled, which cannot downgrade to IE 10.

Hello!

Sorry since this is not relevant to Windows 10, but I post here in hope that someone knows and can help since Google is not always helpful...

I got my hands on Windows Server 2012 R2 this weekend. I installed on a customer's server and before I give it to him, I thought I would compare it to Windows 8.1 and 10 and see the similarities and differences. The first thing I noticed was that I could not change the desktop icons unless I enabled the Desktop Experience Feature first. I then noticed that it could accept Windows 8 drivers, as expected, and it could run almost anything that can be run on Windows 8/10. Then it might be my idea, but I think it is somewhat faster than running Windows 8/10 on the same hardware. Probably this is because most features are disabled by default making it lighter than a full-featured Windows 8 installation.

Now my question: I installed Flash, Java and Silverlight, mostly to check compatibility. I noticed that Java installed successfully (both 32-bit and 64-bit version, just in case) but when trying to verify Java installation in Internet Explorer 11 I get a message that is not installed or disabled! I checked both in IE settings and in Java Control Panel, it is enabled and of course there is registered in Programs and Features! Am I missing something?

Thank you in advance and excuse me for the off-topic post.

I'm trying to help a friend to get their Windows Server 2012 Essentials setup up in their small business.

Server is operational, but I'm having issues connecting PCs to it...

I'm able to get to the server page by going to http://(servername)\connect
I can download the connector software, when I run it it finds the server it ask for user name and password.

After entering info it tries to connect for 20-60 seconds and fails with:

Cannot coonect this computer to the network
The Server is not available. Try connecting this computer again, or for more information, see troubleshooting connecting computers to the server.

any idea what could be causing?

could this be caused by network issues? They are using ATT DSL for internet access, with a ATT model, that is referred to as "gateway.pace.com"

They also have a zyxel smart switch, it seems that both ATT DSL and Zyxel switch are acting as DHCP, and both might be issuing IP addresses.

Another thing I noticed that they are using IP phones for all office phones.
All PCs are connected to the network with an IP phone as a device in the middle, that seems be slowing down the phones from normal gigabit to 10/100 only.

Any help would be grateful.

I'm running a Windows Server 2012 Standard server at home, offering up several standard smb shares to a few client PCs around the home. Despite having changed nothing on the server I was, a little while ago, shocked to be told I did not have access to my music share. I logged on to the server to see that the only account that was granted access to the folders contained within the share was a single account from another machine (listed as a long meaningless string). I proceeded to restore the correct security settings to each folder and re-establish the share. What perplexes me though is that it has now happened again on a second share- unfortunately one that contains a much larger amount of data and subfolders. Can anyone offer an explanation as to how or why Windows is messing up my security settings, and perhaps offer a quick solution to resetting the security settings on a mass of subfolders? I have attempted to change the parent's settings and have it be set to all child objects, however I get an "access denied" error when attempting this- leading me to believe the only way around it is to set each folder individually. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Windows Server 2012 Shares and Security?

Is this Server / Network set up as a domain.

I can't say how it happened without taking a closer look at your network, sorry but.

You may need to take ownership of the folder and files first, then change the permissions.

Do you see any errors in the event log, Red X's?

Can a storage pool created by Server 2012 be used under Windows 10?
I.e. I had Server 2012 on my media server, had used storage spaces and created a storage pool. If I replace the OS with Win10 will I be able to see/use the same storage pool and its data? or will I have to re-create it?
