Question: Used Partition Magic, now cant boot. May have re-labeled C:/ More details inside.

Okay so exactly what happened:
Opened partition magic 8, error came up with it being incompatable with win7, I decided to open it anyway
A number of dialogue boxes appeared saying Partition Magic has noticed a mislabeling of a sector (or something along those lines) asking if I would like it to fix it. I initally said no, but this caused an error and the program not to open, so I clicked yes. Everything seems good.
The program never actually opens, but I get a BSOD
Upon restart I get a windows could not start error, and a request to start normally (doesnt work) or use startup repair (get an error: Windows could not fix this problem automatically)
I have opened the command prompt, and run the fixboot commands, but to no avail.
I get an error "could not find the file specified" when I open system restore, so this is not an option.
I have noticed that the command prompt begins "X:/Windows/System32/" implying that the C: drive has been relabelled to X:

Any ideas? Thanks guys, I will make sure to help out on here when I can as payback

Preferred Solution: Used Partition Magic, now cant boot. May have re-labeled C:/ More details inside.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Used Partition Magic, now cant boot. May have re-labeled C:/ More details inside.

Did you type the commands correctly which are...

bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /fixmbr

Also go to command prompt and type in...

Chkdsk /f
If no luck go back to command prompt type in....

chkdsk /r
This scan will take time let it proceed be patient.

I partitioned my HD, and loaded XP on both primary partitions. The original is on an NTFS partition, the new one is FAT32 (if this matters). I loaded XP on both because I am trying out different versions of Office.

I used PartitionMagic 8.0 and Boot Magic 7.0 to do this. After partitioning, I used Boot Magic to boot from the new partition... it worked and I installed XP. Then I used Boot Magic again to boot up the original OS... but now I can't go back to the new partition. Boot Magic will no longer run on the original OS because it detects a duplicate copy on the new partition!! Weird.. it wont let me install Boot Magic on both partitions.

I've used Partition Magic to "activate" the new partition adn hide the original one, but it still boots the original one. So then I used PQBoot which is supposed to immediately boot up the selected partitioned drive, but again only the original boots up.

How do I access my new partition again?

I got the following problem with a client.

I got a computer and shared with my business data and my sonís data. I worry that if my son got virus in the computer, it will affect my business data. Hence, Iím considering to buy the Partition Magic and use Boot Magic to boot into two different hard drives. My business data is in one partition in one hard drive and my sonís data is in another partition using a different hard drives. Now if we boot into different hard drives, will virus pass from my sonís hard drive to my hard drive?

So the question is, will farther get a virus from the son's hard drive?

I would have to say no but get an experts opion im still training.
Oh and it depends what kinda virus it is

This error message appears after Windows XP tries to load.

"Stop: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000135 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down."

I've tried rebooting in Safe Mode and Debugging mode. This message still appears. I've tried cleaning the inside, dusting it, putting a fan at it, and plugging it into different power sources. Still won't work.

I recently cleaned out a few viruses (VBS Solow and its variants), and this occurred after turning the computer on a few hours later.

Any help would be appreciated greatly.

Please an anyone help me!

Here's my Hard drive Partition setup. I have 1 x 100Gb drive on my acer 8104wlmi laptop:
Partition 1 18gb Winxp home - general use
Partition 2 14GB win xp home- Professional recording studio applications only - optimized for daw
Partition 3 64 gb DATA ONLY

I have a dual boot setup, whereby when I boot from Partition 1 , Partition 2 is hidden, and vice versa. partition 3 is always visible from both drives.

I've been sucessfully using Partition Magic 8.0d and Bootmagic for nearly a year now with no probs, it been great. Until 4 days ago, when I had a windows crash/lock-up on Partition 1, and was forced to switch off the computer before shutting down windows.

Now i am unable to boot from Partition 1 at all. When I do, I get a blue screen of death error.

Booting from Partition 2 is fine

When I boot from partition 2 and run partition magic eight I check partition 1 for disk errors using PM8. I am informed that there are cross-linked files causing the error. When I try to let PM8 fix them it tells me that there are too many to fix.

Can anyone help or suggest a way of fixing these errors on my hidden partition 1?

Thanks very much in advance,

Okay, so I sort of solved this issue, I think, but I don't have any clue why it happened. Which is why I'm posting this.

First, I booted my computer, it got past the bios setup but then the boot screen was very dark, blackened, if you will. Then it didn't load into windows, just a black screen. The monitor light was still on. It would not boot into safe mode.
No recent hardware changes have been made.

I then press the reset button. Goes through boot up, except this time at the windows boot screen, it shows it fine. But, it goes to a blank screen again before entering windows.

Okay, so I'm lost, I reset the bios, I then make sure everything is plugged in. I unplug my power cord, hold the power button down for 30 seconds. I do everything I can think of if it's hardware issue. Same problem occurs.

Finally I run the XP repair. I reboot and it works.

Did XP repair fix the issue, or is it a coincidence? What made the problem happen in the first place? And, have any of you heard of this issue before?

I appreciate all your help.

Answer:Weird boot up issue (details inside)

Im not trying to be funny, but... Are you still having this problem? If you fixed it then what are we trying to help you with? I mean its a Windows PC, sometimes this happens. This has happend to my PC and a cold boot or pressing reset is all it needed and it was fine. Now, if it hapens every time thats another story.

Regarding the Windows screen coming up, and then a few moments of a black screen before the login prompt or desktop display, that is a normal function. Nothing to fix there.

i bought a dell computer running xp home edititon that had partition magic 8 installed. i am doing some microsoft training and wanted to install windows server 2003 enterprise (a 32 bit evaluation install) on another primary partition.

After creating another prim partition on C: i went ahead and did the 2003 server install on the 2nd partition and rebooted the computer. unfortunatly now i can only boot into 2003 server and not into window xp. while in 2003 server i can't even see the partition but for s and g's i threw an xp boot disk in the computer just to see if the other partition was still there and it showed something like OS/2 INACTIVE.

just wondering if anyone had some advice to get the other partition up and running or if i will have to purchase partition magic to merge the partition back and lose all the data.

When you have created C: partition for Windows 2003, did you create it during system setup and did you deleted some partition during that action???

I used Partition Magic to try and install another operating system, on which I failed - that's when I wonder If someone might help. First I wanted to install Windows XP x64, and used Partition Magic to make a new partition, through the 'install another OS' wizard. Well, the PC Rebooted, that scandisk lookalike screen started - showing the creation and resizing of new partition -, and then it rebooted again. But this time, It said that there were no Disks available or the Disk was inactive, or sth. So, tried to boot from Windows x64 CD and didn't make it, but I think that there's something wrong with the WINDOWS CD. Then, tried to boot from a beta Longhorn DVD that I had, and had installed somewhere in time (but decided to keep XP). Install didn't make it, it kept recalling the same 'install windows/view read me' page. Now I guessed there WAS something wrong with the new partition, maybe the boot was set to the new, empty of OS, partition. What the hell do I do now? Can't install new OS, can't normally boot, can't configure partitions.

For the sake of everything that's good, help me, I work at home, run a recently set up home studio, and never made a back up yet..
Would it be 120gb of lost audio?

Really appreciate since then.

Answer:Partition Magic 8 boot-up

Something is certainly strange here. When you install PM8, you will be offered the opportunity be asked to insert a floppy disk to create a bootup set, but you would not be asked to insert a PM8 boot disk as a matter of course. It seems to me that, for some reason, your PC is no longer seeing the OS. Is your HD OK? You may have to wipe your HD and reinstall your OS.

I've got a 250GB WD AAKS hard disk. I had 3 partitions on it: C (50 GB), D (~100GB) and E (~100GB), while C is my Windows partition. I used Partition Magic to try and merge D and E into one partition.
After using the 'merge' option, the program executed an error (which I don't remember), and my E drive disappeared (with all the data it had on it), and instead of it, I got free space, which I just added to drive D. Anyway, I booted into my Windows CD and discovered about 100GB of free space - this isn't logical because D already has about 200GB and C has 50GB. So I tried to delete D, to format the free space into a whole new partition, and when I pressed the final button before erasing, I had to wait for a long time before I realized that the PC is stuck...
I restarted, but couldn't boot back into windows' CD - the blue interface never appears, just a blank black screen, and the LED shows no HDD activity. OK, so I tried booting into windows - and I still can't - it gets stuck on the splash screen, with no sign of HDD activity.
Can't access the disk at all.

Hard disk is few days old - brand new. Never heard any strange noises from it either.
Don't think it's a hardware issue...

How do I access the disk???

Answer:Can't boot after using Partition Magic
Use this if you want to recover data.

If you are not concerned with data, re-install OS.

I had a perfect-running XP Home installation on my PC but the C partition was too small, so I bought PM8 to resize it. The installation went fine, I made emergency boot disks & have the Win XP boot floppy disk too. When running the resize in DOS, something happened and I now get the POST page, then a page of hardware data, configuration settings, etc. The HD light is on permanently. Now the tricky part! I can't boot to either type of floppy, or the installation CD for some reason. I've tried re-setting the boot sequence, used F11 to select the correct device and got nowhere. Any ideas, I can't even reinstall XP without being able to boot, let alone access the registry repair facility. All the FAQs on the Symantec site need booting too! Thanks in advance,

Answer:Can't Boot Win XP After Running Partition Magic 8

After much toil & anguish, I can now get the PM rescue disk to start but it only describes the disk as "bad" and cites an error message 116, which refers to a partition table error. As I have reinstalled Windows on another HD now, I don't care about recovering the Win XP on the primary drive but would very much like to be able to access the family photos and videos on some logical drives which were present but can no longer be seen by PM. Presumably, if I use the format command from the PM window, I will formaat the entire disk and lose the files along with it? If I did this, are there any "deleted" file recovery porgrammes which would find them afterwards? Please help, I'm nearly out of ideas now!

Need help with Partition Magic. When I installed the second disk after everything was loaded it said "media error on disk" what can I do now as my computer will not boot Any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer:Partition Magic Boot Problem

What are you trying to do? I have partition magic and the only time I ever used the rescue disks was when I created a second primary partition and after booting to the newly created partition found I was have problems installing windows,so I used the disks to "set as active" my other, original primary drive. So again, what have you done and what are you now trying to do? The "media error" error message does not sound good. Sounds like the floppy may be corrupt/missing certain files.

Hi all. Got a bit of a problem and I'm not sure how to go about fixing it. Firstly, I dual boot with xp and debian linux. I have my ntfs partition with xp, a fat partition to store files accessable to both, a linux swap partition and two ext3 partitions. I wanted to get rid of one of the ext3 partitions and resize my fat partition to make it bigger. Anyway partition magic fixed a few bad blocks or something when it started and then it wouldnt work with a "init error 117" error. I think that was it. So then I went into partition magic tools and was having a look and it has an option to boot another os. Now, I dont have the partition magic bootloader installed (am using linux one. -grub) but my curiosity got the better of me and I clicked the button to see what would happen. (maybe my curiosity will kill me one day) Anyway, computer reboots and goes straight to windows screen (with black background and little blue moving bar) it hangs there for a couple of secs and then comes up with "autocheck not found" or something to that effect. Then to another screen which says "irql not less or equal" with a heaap of stuff underneath saying about a problem. Then system reboots and I get the usual grub menu screen. I can still boot into linux but if I choose xp then the same thing keeps happening. So I put an install cd in and go to recovery console and the funny thing is that it doesnt see my ntfs partition, only my fat one. So therefore I cant fixboot,... Read more

"Partition Magic" is an old product from "Win 98" era and it's boot disc is based on DOS. You can use "Partition Wizard" free edition boot disc as an alternative.

Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD.

When I bought this computer, Windows was installed on Drive C. After a while, I formatted Drive D and install Windows in D:

Then I formatted C using Norton Partition Magic (Norton Partition Magic shows that Drive C is the primary drive for my computer) and instead of the Windows Logo, I get

NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

So I use another computer to create Norton Partition Magic Boot Disk. And when I inserted the diskette and restarted my computer, I get

CANNOT LOAD DOS Press any key to retry

It's been two days and I haven't found a solution problem, so I would be really grateful if anyone can help me out here.

Thanks a lot

Answer:My computer can't boot after i used Norton Partition Magic

You should not have moved the OS from the "C" partition. That is where it should be and is not being found. You should be able to re-letter the partitions at Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management.

Right click a partition entry and a menu comes up, including 'change drive letter.' I would change the present "C" first to "E", so that the letter is available when you want to put "D" back to "C" and there is no conflict with the existing "D." Presumably, you could later change "E" to "D" if you like.

I am not fully conversant technically, so please wait for others to respond.

During a re-partitioning of my Toshiba Satelloite Pro laptop, Partition Magic failed and my entire system was lost. On boot-up started getting the message 'Initialising & Establishing Link' and then after a longish pause:
PXE-E61. Media Test Failure, check cable
PXE-MOF: Existing Intel Boot Agent
Windows XP Pro (SP3) then started to boot, suddenly came up with BSD and restarted. Similar if Safe boot or last known successful start. Ended up reinstalling the entire system using Windows XP recovery disk - of course lost all my other partitions but this is not important - all backed up elsewhere - but once Windows re-installed still getting same error messages so implies something is seriously wrong hardware wise.
Strangely, Windows now working perfectly well and have successfully re-partitioned HHD (using Acronis), but, as I'm about to dual boot Windows 7, I want to resolve this issue first. Please help.

I used Partition Magic 8 emergency boot disks to copy the entire Windows XP partition from the 120gig SATA hard drive to a 250gig IDE hard drive.

The 120gig SATA is connected as the primary master and the 250gig IDE is connected as the primary slave.

I disconnect the 120gig SATA hard drive, and try to boot from only the 250gig IDE hard drive, which is still connected as the primary slave, but it only shows the initial Windows logo and then hangs, never reaching the desktop screen.

I also tried booting the 250gig IDE hard drive connected as the primary master, but same problem of never reaching the desktop screen.

Is it a problem with the different type of hard drives?

Ok, guys, I have no idea where to post this, as it's a problem with dual boot (WinXP/OpenSUSE), I'm not sure if I should post it under Windows XP support or Linux support. That's why I'll post the same on both places, well I'm sorry but i don't know what else to do.
My story:
I've wanted linux on my drive for a long time now. But I need windows too, I have my own reasons. The problem was, that I was too afraid to try to dual-boot them before, that was like wow no way man, too much for me. Time was passing, I started changing, gaining more experience. Few days ago, I was kinda sick of my O$ as it was running like 10 times slower than it should cause of **** loads of viruses that were roaming around. It was time to make a fresh install. I emptied the Disk, prepared everything, then the wonderful idea flashed out of nowhere. "I'm gonna dual-boot winxp and linux!". Now the fun part starts. First, I booted the box with xp cd. Then I deleted all the partitions. The Disk is a SATAII WD 160GIGS, so I made two partitions 70 gig big. One for windows, one for linux. Then i formatted the first one and installed winxp on it. Booted XP. Installed some drivers, for video and MB, and Partition Magic. Eh now the chaos begins. Partition Magic is, this is only my opinion, a too complicated program. They've just made it too complicated, it could be a lot better. I launched Partition Magic. Next thing i did was format the second partition to ext3, for linux. Then I went around looking... See if there is a file on the c drive called boot.ini (likely to be a hidden file so tell explorer to view all files) and if there is, copy the text from it and paste here; also create a copy of it onto a floppy. When it is here, someone may have the knowhow to tell you what it should read; also give details of your setup - operating system, hard disks, dual boot (if any) and so forth.

I recently partitioned my harddrive into 2 (c, d). Drive C contains all my documents and other media and drive D is my "active" drive for daily use. Now when i did the intital partion i was installing XP pro and i did not partition enough space on Drive D. I was constantly get "low space" messages. I decided to use Magic Partition 8 consolidate both drives ( a feature that is on the program its self). When i started the process it required a re-start (i guess to finish before logging into windows?). So the process started in a (blue screen state) and an error message came ( i did not write it down ) so it stayed there... i eventually decided to reboot.

So when i rebooted it goes back to "process is restarting" blue screen. After a few moments....a black screen comes up and the only thing active is my mouse. So obviously the process has taken over and will not allow windows to boot up. I decide to just start over and re-install windows. I put my boot CD in and it's not reading it( i hear it spinning). I went into BIOS and placed it as #1 in the boot order and it's still not receptive.

i am lost as MP 8 has not let go of the erroring consolidation process.... help.

Hi, I made a partition on my hard drive, using Partition Magic 8.0, to install Linux using the 'install another OS option'. In order to do this Partition Magic 'hides' the other Primary partition (windows xp) so that they don't conflict I guess. After creating the Linux partition, windows won't boot because the windows partition is hidden, and at this point you are supposed to install Linux. My Linux didn't install due to a fault in motherboard ( It could be it got over heated once, basically alot of programs that run during the computer's boot process crash, so I couldn't install). Anyway, I was stuck with a hard drive that wouldn't boot. The rescue disks I created with Partiton Magic wouldn't work either (don't know why), so I had the idea of installing partition magic on another computer, putting the hard drive on that as a slave, and deleting the linux partition, unhiding the windows xp partition and making it 'Active' again. I also merged the unallocated space where the linux partition was back into the windows partition. The windows partition is 'Primary' and I can see no difference between the windows xp partition and this computer's master hard drive running windows. When I put it back in my computer and set it to master, it won't boot. The error is something like 'there is a problem with the disk, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to reboot'. On the original computer the partition... Read more

Answer:Hard drive won't boot...Partition Magic to blame! HELP!!

Whenever setting up a dual-boot Windows Linux it is always best to use 2 HDDs. Windows on the Primary HDD and Linux on the Secondary HDD. If you would like detailed Instructions I can post those for you.

To fix your boot problem follow the instructions below, make sure the CD-ROM is the first boot device. This should fix your problem.

Here you go:

1. Use the Windows XP CD-ROM to restart the computer.

2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair the Windows XP installation.

3. Press C to repair the Windows XP installation by using the Recovery Console.

4. Type the number that corresponds to the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then

press ENTER. For example, type 1, and then press ENTER.

5. Type the Administrator password, and then press ENTER.

6. Type map, and then press ENTER. Note the drive letter that is assigned to the CD-ROM drive

that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM.

7. Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after you type each one, where drive is the drive

letter that you typed in step 4:

fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0
fixboot c:
copy drive:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy drive:\i386\ c:\
If you are prompted to overwrite the file, type y, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: In these commands, there is a space between the ntldr and c:\, and

Hi all

I have formatted my hard drive

C ? main OS NTFS
E- Data NTFS
F- Used for Boot Magic (50MB)Fat 32
G- Second OS NTFS (obviously this will be hidden and unhidden & will be C when active)

I have a known good image of a C drive. I would like to restore this to the G drive & then use boot magic to switch between the two.

I can?t seem to get the second boot to work. Is there something wrong with restoring an image that was created from the C drive & restoring it to the G drive ?

When I tried to boot into the second OS the boot was unsuccessful & hangs sometime during booting XP.

I am at work so that is my initial question. I can post back with exact error messages when I am at home.

I have also got in a bit of a mess by doing the following.

I made an image of C. Installed Bootmagic afterwards. I then restored the C image.
Bootmagic is now no longer installed in add/remove programmes but when I try to install it I get an error, ?please uninstall any previous versions of Bootmagic before proceeding?. Thinking about it maybe formatting the F drive will erase the old install & cure this problem?

I would really appreciate a bit of help with this.

Thanks & sorry for the initial lack of detail

im quite sure i already experienced that problem several years ago, and then i solved it easily, but right now i dont have any clue anymore..

i wanted to tune up my mother's old pc (win xp pro sp3) and freed some gb, then wanted to distribute the acquired space among the two partitions with partition magic 8. i resized one partition (reduced its space) and after the wizard told me that that would free up some space, and asked whether i wanted to give that space to another partition, i did that. there are only 2 partitions on 1 HD.

after restart the process failed at 33% i think and since i experienced problems with partition magic on that pc earlier (which didnt cause any problems), i just rebooted and forgot to look at the error that occured

since then the system reboots every time the windows boot screen appears (right before the blue bar even reaches the right side for the first time, ie. after some 2-3 seconds), and even when starting to safe mode (right after the drivers have been loaded).

i thought, no problem, done this so many times before, put in the os cd, ran recovery console, fixmbr.

same problem.

then ran fixboot and fixmbr.

same problem.

now im running a chkdsk /r.

i seem to have forgotten the solution, cause im quite sure i already experienced the same problem several years ago, as mentioned at the beginning.

please help..

Sorry for the vague title and sorry if this is the wrong forum, if it is, feel free to move the post.

Yesterday I was looking at some software (irrelevant to my issue, just background) which involved a home server and firewall, and wanting to use one of the hard drives connected to my current computer (which is the one im having troubles with), I needed to first move one partition which had a backup of my OS (XP Home 32bit, SP3 iirc, its been a long time) on to my main hard drive, so that it would be easily accessible. This partition contained a full clone that, upon booting once, would immediately change drive letters and set the partition to active. That was good for my purposes, but when I copied it over to my main hard drive, I accidently forgot to hide it, which caused a headache among other things.

I connected up a spare hard drive with XP installed (just the basics) to remedy this, and have fixed up letter assignments, active and hidden partitions, HOWEVER, when I try to boot the partition, I am left with the error that partition magic cannot find the batch file, "press any key". Now for some reason, any key presses are ignored (I had used F8 to load up the boot menu, USB keyboard) and this leaves me unable to load windows up. Any help at all on what to do would be appreciated.

My thoughts on dealing with this would be to remove the file prompting windows to execute the batch file, however I have no idea which files are cuplable for this.

Hi guys,
I was trying to get Partition Magic to run 2 operating systems.. I made a seperate partition and set it to install xp.

However it crashed while installing the 2nd OS. and now i get stuck at a screen saying "NTLDR is missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"
if i restart same thing.
If i boot from an xp disk it tries to install but never gets through .. it will crash with an error that says "windows has shut down to prevent damage to you......"

So basicly I cant even start my computer.... I cant access anything..
Im not sure wat to do becuz no recovery disk seems to work.
Im thinking im stuck in a partition in my hard drive ..

What can I do? Is there anyway to fdisk this thing?
perhaps trying to create a dos boot disk and fdisk?
would that enable me to erase the entire HD and install xp later?

thanks in advance for any help!

I have PowerQuest (Now Symantec) PartitionMagic 7.0
I have my hard drive partitioned into C: Operating System, D: Programs and E: Data (My Documents etc.). My C Drive is getting very low on free space, so I recently tried to take some of the free space from one of the other partitions and put it on the C Drive. When I tried to add the free space to the C Drive I got this message:

"Resizing or moving an operating system partition beyond the 1024 cylider boundary may make the computer unbootable. Due to INT13 Bios Limitations on some machines, your rescue diskettes may not be able to recover from this situation. Moving all or part of an operating system partition above the specified 'Boot Code Boundary' is not recommended."

I had 7,251 Mb on my C Drive, and no matter how small an increment of additional disk space I tried to add, I got that same message. Is there any way around this without deleting programs from my computer? The C Drive keeps filling up even though I haven't added a new program in ages. I keep the internet cache and temporary download folders empty, and yet I only have about 300 Mb of free space left on the C Drive, and that keeps shrinking. Help!

I used GParted under Linux to fix my HD that had its master boot records trashed by a Trojan and kept my computet from booting. After using every technique and program under the sun to try and rescue the MBR on the physical disk without resorting to anything that could mess up the data in the partitions, I eventually discovered a genuine, and legitimately valid CD tool called Rescue Live CD (Linux-based). It will boot your computer from the CD/DVD drive and load the Linux OS into memory. It will then start a Windows-like GUI with shortcuts to its utility programs. As with most CD-based Linux software, I downloaded it as a compressed image file (ISO format) and burned it to a CDRW using Ashampoo Burning Suite 6 or ImgBurn, depending on which computer I could use.The Rescue Live CD that gets created has a typical Windows-type menu along the top of the window and also icon shortcuts to disk utilities - of which some have Windows versions like DriveImageXML.I have a Dell Dimension E521 w/ an 80 GB HD that is partitioned into four parts. The #1 partition is the Dell Utility partition that comes with all Dell desktop system. I left it alone, and in the begining, I used a commercial utility called Partition Commander to create two additional partitions from my single 80GB drive. The E521 came stock with a 40GB WD EISA drive that I upgraded to an SATA 80GB Seagate Barracuda. The 80 GB partition was first split into a 40GB partition (at #4 - the last partition). Partition #3 was a clone... Read more

Answer:XP BOOT PARTITION (sd4) moved inside extended one (sd5)

See the links below. I suggest you avoid the Windows boot manager all together and use a third party manager. You may or may not know that you can only have 4 primary partitions on a single hard drive. Or 3 primary partitions and one extended partition with as many logical drives as you have free drive letters. WinXP pro creates a small partition at the beginning of the drive if you allow it to. The solution is to use a third party partition utility to avoid that 8MB un-partitioned space.

My computer came with one great big partition, with XP Home installed on it. For four months all my data got stored on that same partition. Then I got partition magic, and decided to make a separate partition for all my files. This turned out to be too small, after I'd transfered all my music, plus my work files to it. I then tried to repartition the drive, taking most of the spare space from the XP drive and giving it to the data drive.
Just as it started to widen the Data drive, and after shrinking the XP drive, it crashed. Now XP doesn't boot, and my data partition is corrupted too.
I've been daft and so have no backup of my data, and no partition magic back-up floppies. Is there anyway I can get the data back?

If it's any help, Ubuntu is also on the laptop, and working fine.

Answer:Partition Magic 8 has corrupted Windows partition and Data partition

Do you have the installation CD? If so, "BART PE" may be the solution. I have used it with success. Here is the link:

I have a 250GB drive which I had split into two partitions (F and G). One partition had almost run out of space so I was going to reduce the size of the other and give the free space to this partition.

I set everything up and left it to run, but it was taking longer than I expected and I needed to leave so I cancelled the operation. The size of the G: partition has been reduced and the drive now has 20GB of unallocated space which I was going to give to the F: partition, but it won't let me do this. Whenever I try to do it it simply says an error has occurred. I can't remember the exact message since I don't have access to the computer right now, but I remember the error code being #508.

Also, the G: partition no longer appears in my computer, but I can still browse the drive using the inbuilt browser in Partition Magic.

Since they put a Cancel button on the operation screen I assumed it would be safe to cancel the operation, in that it would undo any changes that had already been made, but apparently it just stops what it's doing and doesn't let you continue from where you stopped. I realise now that I made a mistake, but is there any way to recover the partition (so that I can access it through My Computer as I usually can) and to finish reallocating the unused space on the drive?

Right, so my mother has had quite an issue with her computer for a long time. I never use the PC, so I haven't been able to actually experience all the symptoms. I believe she has a virus. And these are the symptoms I've experienced.
- Random freezing and crashing.
- Computer refuses to install Windows Updates. Even something as little as 1.0mb
- Couldn't install anti-virus software as if something was blocking it from finalizing the process.
- Avast anti-virus scans hangs on one thing indefinitely as if something is stopping it on purpose
I have tried using Malware Bytes to scan for anything but to no avail. And the avast just refuses to work.

Trying to access one of my hard drives resulted in My Computer locking up, and upon ending the process explorer seems to get shut down. Task manager wouldn't come up so I'm forced to reset. I'm currently running Avast and MalwareBytes, and will keep this topic updated, I hope I can fix this....

If anyone has any input please share.

I'm hoping this was just a random fluke and I'm being paranoid about nothing. Both MalwareBytes and Avast have come up with absolutely nothing on my main drive, though I'm still scanning my backup drive.

Weird, all those problems stopped on their own, guess it was just a fluke.

Hey everybody!

I recently managed to get my computer loaded with a number of different viruses. To make a long story short, I downloaded/ran an .exe program that I later found out was full of viruses/keyloggers.

I ran a bunch of scans (Malwarebytes, Avast, McAfee, then after I uninstalled McAfee, Kaspersky. Now everything seems to be back to normal. It might just be me, but my computer still seems a tiny bit slower than it was before all this happened (I'd like to put emphasis on the possibility that it could just be me being cautious). I'm also not sure if there are any keyloggers left, so I would really appreciate it if you guys could look through my logs or not to see if I'm clean.

Known [previous?] Viruses: Right after I opened up that deadly .exe file, my links from the google results page started taking me to RANDOM pages, with nothing to do with what I searched for. Shortly after, EVERY program that I would open up would have a few "error messages" before it, with just little pop up windows saying "Error C:/blahblah", and only after I exited out of 2 or 3 of those, would the program would open.
Also, I ran a virus scan the a couple nights back after I infected my computer, and when I looked at it in the morning, "Windows Police Pro" was up. Knowing this was a fake program, I closed out of it and deleted it via HKEYblah, and the task manager (and I also deleted the WPP files on my local disk). Next morning, it was back aga... Read more

First off, I have a Windows Premium Home Vista One, 32bit.

My computer was acting up and had frequent random shutdowns, so I decided to do the system recovery and restore it to factory settings. Everything was going great, I was putting all my files back into the computer when the frequent crahses started coming up. They would either come up after I tried rebooting the computer or about 5 minutes after I'm logged in and everything. It's where the blue screen comes up and usually either of these messages comes up with of course other text:

I heard it somehing to do with my drive or something, I'd appreciate any insight and help on this recurring issue. I'm really not that great with computers.

- the original installed OS on the system? YES
- an OEM or full retail version? - OEM = came pre-installed on system - Full Retail = you purchased it from retailer

- What is the age of OS installation (have you re-installed the OS?) 5 years old

Ok well before I start off, I'd like to say that I have cleared the main annoyances of my problem. I registered here because I still think, however, that I am vulnerable to attacks. The firewall within Spy Sweeper is still picking up and blocking things.

The problem I had before included many different trojans and spyware, that got wrapped into a single download my sister got. Apparently she doesn't know not to open 21kb .exe files...

The precautions I've taken so far were as follows:
1. Turned off my internet, I knew a trojan would likely redownload itself until all of its virus and spyware files were removed. I put my internet back on when I thought this was the case.

2. Did a scan with AVG Anti-Virus Free, and it was unable to remove most of what it found... What remained, I was able to delete by finding manually with the help of the AVG logs. (Details about viruses will be below)

3. Did a scan with WebRoot Spy Sweeper, it found a lot of things and got rid of them. (Details about this will be below)

4. Found some IE plugins that didn't belong with the Spy Sweeper's Browser Helper Objects section and removed them. For the first time after doing that, I finally stopped having a hijacked homepage.

Anyway, the problems were as follows:
1. Homepage was jacked by one of a million different "your pc is insecure" programs that tried to sell me on scams. This one took me to uptodateprotection(dot)com (don't want to make a link), as well as syssecurityp... Read more

Hi all,

I've been working on a Dell server (not sure of the model, but can get it tomorrow) that has Windows Server 2008 and a 500 GB hard drive, split into two partitions, giving us a C: and D: drive.

Recently, somebody from the office used Partition Magic (not sure of the version) to resize the partitions. I think they're roughly split up 150 for C: and 300-ish for D:.

Anyway, the resizing appeared to go well, but every couple of weeks, the D: partition completely disappears from Windows! Computer Management shows it as unallocated space, I believe.

Fortunately, I'm able to easily restore the partition using a bootable Paragon Rescue Kit CD. It quickly scans and finds the "lost" partition, and it restores it in no time. I've done this a couple of times now over the past few months.

The question, of course, is WHY is the partition dropping out... or how to prevent it from dropping out in the first place.

The thing I find really odd is that it will drop out while the server is running -- meaning, it will just disappear at a seemingly random time, and nobody will notice until they try to access data that was on that partition.

Any suggestions on what I can check or what the solution might be? It's really confusing! It's nice to know how to restore the partition, but obviously it's still a hassle to have to do that. It'd be much nicer if the partition wouldn't go in the first place.

Answer:After resizing partition with Partition Magic, D: partition keeps disappearing!

First I was getting continues bsod and I figure out that maybe because I OC my CPU so I reset my bios to normal and my system work for long time without bsod.

Then it occurred later twice one after updating my nvidia driver to 320.18 a week ago so I figured maybe FireFox problem with the new nvidia driver so I unchecked option "use hardware acceleration when available" and there was no bsod for a week, today it occurred after start my system for just few minutes !!

I have a GF8200a mobo.
I bought some ram a while back and recently one of the sticks kinda stopped working so I sent for a replacement. During that time I had 3 1 gig sticks of ram in this mother board working fine. Today I got my replacement stick from kingston and I put it in the 4th slot and went to boot the computer. It would start up but no display on the screen and none of my usb hardware (mouse keyboard) would come on. I removed the stick went back to my old configuration and got the same issue. Finally I started changing how many sticks I had in what configuration and found that if I had only 2 sticks in the computer would start fine no matter which 2 sticks were in. But as soon as I go to add a 3rd stick of RAM no matter which stick it is I would get the same issue as above. Computer starts but no display or USB.

What could this problem be.

I'm posting this from safe mode w/ networking as I don't know where else to turn.
I did a sfc scan and it stopped at 57% and I followed online instructions to obtain the sfc.txt. Here are the files unable to be fixed. The 2 corrupted are bcdedit.exe and wucltux.dll

Another thing to note. I've had this Lenovo y580 laptop for about a month and a half now and I've had to use "one key recovery" to wipe everything about 3 times. This thing will work fine for like 2 weeks then out of nowhere all these error messages and applications will start crashing. The HDD and memory health is fine from all scans from lenovo support they performed.

I only have warranty for hardware and I've been on the phone w/ them about a dozen times total. Now they want me to do a clean install by sending in recovery disks which would cost $60. Software warranty is extra $ which I'm very tight on. If I could manually try to fix this it'd be a godsend. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. I also use MSE and malwarebytes so don't think its a virus it must be a flaw in the system. Thanks very much

Answer:SFC Details inside. How do I fix these corrupted files?

Hello JJ, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Here's a clean copy of those files from my system in the ZIP file below. After you extract (drag and drop) them from the ZIP file to your desktop and unblock them, the TIP box below will explain how to replace them in your C:\Windows\System32 folder.

You will need to take ownership and set permissions to "Allow" your account "Full Control" of the original file in your current installation before you will be allowed to replace it with the extracted copy.

If the system file is in use and you are unable to replace it with the extracted copy, then: Open a Command Prompt at boot.
Do steps 4B to 4D in this tutorial first to verify the drive letter of your Windows 7 drive. It's not always C: at boot.
Type in the command below to copy and replace the original file with the extracted replacement file.
Copy /Y "full path of extracted replacement file" "full path of original Windows 7 system file"
For example:
If the extracted replacement uDWM.DLL is on my desktop, then I would use type this in the command prompt at boot and press enter.

Copy /Y "C:\Users\User-name\Desktop\uDWM.dll" "C:\Windows\System32\uDWM.dll"

Hope this helps,

Okay well the problem is my computer keeps freezing while I play games, directx games to be in specific but i havnt played any non direct x games.

Games I've played NBA live 2005, War3, CS:S, i never seem to freeze playing CS:S so it could be something else.

Another thing that could be taken note as that when I turn on my computer, my comp will freeze when it tests the memory in bios. Like it won't even say 'xxx OK' it'll just freeze. Then I restart and then it'll do it, but this is only sometimes, and ussaully always happens after I freeze during gameplay and have to restart.

I've tried formatting, and it didn't work, I've also tried uninstalling my firewire card that I installed recently which I thought was causing the problem, didn't help either. So anyone got any clues? I ran memtest on 700mb of my 1gb ram and all seems okay.

I've attached my DXDiag if you want to take a look at my system specs.

Answer:My Comp is unstable please help details inside

Sounds like a hardware problem. Bad memory or motherboard. Do you have more than one stick of RAM? If so try running the computer with just one. Some motherboards are picky about which brand and type of RAM you use.

Ok Techies, I need some real help on this one....

Older Gateway P3 500mhz last week was working fine...
I don't know the exact details it is my mom's PC and I am giving it a whirl at it... Was working fine then one day she says everytime she boots after bios black screen says"no OS found"

So I pick up thePC and bios won't and can't find a Hard drive.
Maybe bad drive, I remove and replace it with a good one w/ OS already installed.. NO OS found..
I insert Windows Xp disc in CD rom and it loads drivers and then begin to install, next "windows can't continue no HD detected.

Back to bios check Periph.. no primary (none)
secondary shows (cd rom)

I try swapping out

Hard drives..
New ribbon cable...
Switch IDE spots on mobo...
Try to run HD & CD on same line set one for slave.. (didn't work)
Try hooking up HD and remove CD
Bios still shows None for primary and secondary...

Bios recognizes CD roms... but won't detect any HD's...

I try to reset Bios (nvidia) w/ jumper... still same
Removed battery cleaned contacts ... still won't find HD
Ok I'm at wits end .. can't think of anything else to try...

Beg and plead anyone w/ ideas feel free to post...

Truly appreciate any help and suggestions

Answer:Bios/PC can't find HD details inside

Have you tried a different power connector on the hard drive? Also try entering the hard drive parameters manually in the BIOS.

Good luck.

On a side note, it is possible that the CMOS battery is dead. On some older machines if the battery goes the BIOS won't detect the hard drive.

Alright, I am using Windows Vista.

Since about three days ago I CANNOT logon into Msn Live Messenger nor the online to check my e-mails.

It seems this problem also occurs when I try to buy things online like Ebay.

Msn Messenger gives me this error code: 80048820 (Extended: 80048439)

I tried all the suggest things in the Help Topic. Nothing worked.

The last suggestion is to :"Reregister the SSL security libraries"

In Windows Vista, click the Start button, and then click in the Start Search box.
Type each of the following commands, and then press ENTER. After each command is executed successfully, you will receive a "DllRegisterServer succeeded" message. Wait until you receive this message before continuing to the next command.

* REGSVR32 softpub.dll
* REGSVR32 wintrust.dll
* REGSVR32 initpki.dll
* REGSVR32 Rsaenh.dll
* REGSVR32 Mssip32.dll
* REGSVR32 Cryptdlg.dll
* REGSVR32 Dssenh.dll
* REGSVR32 Gpkcsp.dll
* REGSVR32 Slbcsp.dll
* REGSVR32 Sccbase.dll

When I enter about half of the entries I get an error(The ones in bold):

So should I re-download the missing stuff? I don't understand wintrust because I redownloaded another one and it still doesn't work.

I really need help, hope I was clear enough.

P.S Googling the error code is a waste of time -_-

Did you uninstall the previous cards drivers ? You could also try uninstalling and re-installing the new cards drivers. Also make sure the graphics card your using is selected as the default device.
I imagine you have enough RAM to not be causing problems.
You could also try installing the latest version of Nvidia Physx from their website.

ok, 3 days ago my computer was working completely fine. that night i downloaded a zip file for a video. the next morning my comp told me that i needed to install "important updates" [which i think was just the windows sp2] and when the computer restarted i needed to install the latest version of java so i let that install and update.

then after all the updates were installed my computer started acting weird. i couldnt open pages like,, or my online school which is, i also can't open pages where there are multiple images. i've tried to uninstall everything that updated so it was back to the way it was, but my browsers are unable to download and they're still unable to open myspace and the other sites. i use opera as my main browser, firefox when opera doesn't work, and chrome as my last resort. but i also have safari and IE installed but im unable to use them

i've tried to do a system restore to 3 days ago but it says the only restore point was 8/24/09 at 10:24 am, so that wont work.

so is there a way to make my computer work normally again? all i really want is to be able to download again and open the webpages b/c i REALLY REALLY need my school page to open any help will be much appriciated

My OS is Windows 8
I use Google Chrome as my default browser but this problem persists with Firefox and IE as well. As of right now,, and will not load at all. The worst of it all is these are the three sites that I most commonly use. I was able to use all of them perfectly fine last night before i went to bed, and now they will not load at all, while other sites load perfectly fine. When i run a ping test through the CMD prompt for these sites

Here are some troubleshooting tips I have tried already:
Check if theirs a browser update (none needed)
Clear cache, cookies, history, etc...
Run a malware scan (0 threats detected)
Run a Virus scan (o threats detected)
Try opening page while using https instead of http
Flush DNS through CMD prompt
Once again only these select few websites wont load while all others work perfectly fine..
Any help or ideas are greatly appreciated. This has been going on for nearly 3 hours now.

A little background:

Around a year ago I had signed up for Private Internet Access, which installs the TAP9 driver (OpenVPN I believe). I started to get blue screens on my machine (Win7 Ultimate x64), so I installed it on a 2nd Windows machine (identical OS). Same thing. As soon as I started the VPN, blue screen. I installed VirtualBox VM software, same thing on both machines. After trying various things, I ended up sending the motherboard back to ASRock (It was a Z87 Professional). They found nothing wrong, but I ended up doing a fresh install of Win7 and everything was great for about a year. Then I started having machine lockups and found out that my SSDs (Samsung 840 EVOs) were victim to the slowdowns that a lot of people were complaining about. I tried upgrading the firmware and running their "fix", then the blue screens started to happen again, this time at random times. Removed the drives, did a fresh install onto some WD Black drives, and everything was working fine. I thought the motherboard had finally crapped out as even with the onboard LAN ports, the network icon would end up with a yellow exclamation mark after about 5 minutes of usage. I had to use an add-on card to get it to work, so I decided to just build a pretty much brand new system.

I just built it today:
ASRock Extreme6/ac / Intel i7-5930K (brand new)
32Gb G.skill DDR4 (new)
Samsung 850 Pro (apparently these drives did not have the same problems as the 840s) (new) ... Read more

Hey guys. I currently have AVG Free Edition 8.0 installed on my computer and my lastest can, which was last night, came up with multiple infections.

Details of My Computer:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
My account is an administator account
AV/AS Program is AVG Free Edition

After AVG detect the infections and attempted to clean the infections, it prompted me to reboot. After reboot the infections re-appeared. I downloaded and installed SpyBot and ran its scan and Immunized my computer but the problem still exists. I seemed to have opened up a hornets nest I guess.

These are the infections AVG is picking up:

These infections seem to be infecting my .dll's and .exe's as AVG reports.

So, my laptop has been freezing. But not exactly randomly. I can run AIM for roughly 5-10min without a freeze-up (aka, nothing works/opens, but I can still move the mouse). OR I can open up firefox and it will run no problems on about half of the sites/forums I usually browse. And lastly, I have tried to scan the computer several times, but it freezes up almost exactly halfway through (three times now), and then I can press the "Quarantine" button and it will freeze again halfway through deleting what's there (just tracking cookies).

I'm one of those people with a secondary computer, one for gaming, one for everything else. My laptop is that everything else computer, and it's quite annoying having to alt-tab out of my precious games. Worst case, I may resort to re-formatting.

If you need anymore information, I'd be happy to give it. I don't know the exact specs of the computer, as I really never cared what they were, being my secondary computer, and I can't open the system info without it freezing, so I did the best I could copying specs from a website then changing what I remembered. But it's a Dell Inspiron 1501, and you can look it up yourself if the below specs isn't enough information, or I might be able to help out.

* AMD Sempron 3500+ (1.8GHz/512Kb)
* 15.4" Ultrasharp WXGA display

Hello all,

I've got a 100 gig hard drive divided into a primary C partition and a second logical partition (E drive). (I also have a separate hard drive, which is D, which I use for backups). This is a dual boot system - the C drive has Windows ME on it, which I don't use anymore, and the E drive has Windows XP Pro.

The C drive is FAT 32 and the E drive is NTFS. I'd like to be able to delete all data and programs from the C drive and just leave the ME operating system there, so as to free up as much free space as possible. Then, I'd like to shift the free space from C into the E partition.

I'm not sure if this is possible to do. Can I use Partition Magic to move FAT32 free space into the E partition, which is formatted as NTFS? Can folks tell me if this is possible to do and what steps I need to take, using Partition Magic, in order to accomplish it.

I'd appreciate tips and suggestions! Thanks very much. Please feel free to also e-mail me directly: [email protected]

How many of you that actually use Vista, use it as your only OS?

Obviously if your job requires you using XP or something else, that doesn't count.

As your personal choice at home or wherever, how many of you use Vista as your only OS, without dual-booting or anything like that?

There is a reason why I ask... I'm curious how many people that have actually given Vista a shot have switched.

So, I got a new laptop last week, and ever since unboxing it, I've been getting two different BSODs:
This usually happens when DISK is at 100% usage, by whatever reason. There have been a number of different programs or even System that has caused it to be near 100% usage.

For the questions:
? 64 BIT
? What was original installed OS on system? - WINDOWS 8
? Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? - Came pre-installed.
? Age of system (hardware) - 1 week old.
? Age of OS installation - have you re-installed the OS? - Has never done so. So 1 week old.

? CPU - 8 GB Memory, Intel Core i7 Haswell
? Video Card - Intel
? MotherBoard - It's the one in default Lenovo IdeaPad y410P
? Power Supply - Lenovo, 110W standard U.S.

? System Manufacturer - Lenovo
? Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) - Y410P

Will attach the logs after I finish installing 7Zip.

Hey guys... I really haven't had this problem before. My internet is very good - DSL. For the last 2 days, it's been running VERY slowly - it's been taking one minute or more to load every webpage. Downloads that have went 140kb/s are now going 500bytes - 2kb/s. My Google customized homepage takes 2 minutes to load I've run a spyware/adware scan, and it's still not working. I really don't recall doing anything that might have caused this.

I am running Windows XP.

I WOULD post a hijack this scan, but the download goes SO slow, and in the middle of the download I get the following error message:
Internet Explorer cannot download from [or other download source]

An unexpected error has occurred.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Okay everyone, I will post a quick history and get to down to business quickly.
I am usually a responsible adult in terms of computer protection, this time I wasn't. I stupidly downloaded and ran .exe files from applications-station trying to get free software and I regret it and I admit my stupidity.
I now have a problem with ad pop-ups in IE and Firefox(main browser), But more importantly I am worrid about other malware and possible key-loggers.
All help is greatly appreciated.
P.S. A full reset of FireFox seems to have rid of the pop-ups.
P.S.S. I will also post a MBAM log scan which I ran after the incident,it found ~60 potential threats. Maybe it will be of some use.
P.S.S.S. I see that others have been suggested NOT to post an MBAM log unless requested. I have removed the log for now. Feel free to request it.
P.S.S.S.S. Apparently it would be best if I did nothing and just waited for help. well... derp...
P.S.S.S.S.S. I should really stop adding these

Ever since i bought the computer, it has been a little weird.  every once in a while the computer would freeze up for a little bit and then resume running fine after 10 seconds.  As time went on the frequency of these events increased and the length of the lag increased. I recieved a few bsods with "internal power error".  I replaced the 750 watt psu with an 800 watt psu which didnt completely fix my problem, but changed it.  Boot is still slow, but occasionally it goes quite fast (still not as fast as it should) and the computer runs smoother with less freezing but it still happens and it is still a nuisance.  I have tried several clean windows installs.  i got some errors and warnings in the event viewer i will post that text below the system specs.  chkdsk didnt help either, im thinking about doing another one.
