Using Dell Windows Disk on a Toshiba Laptop

Question: Using Dell Windows Disk on a Toshiba Laptop

I am trying to wipe and restore a Toshiba laptop and the only Vista 32-bit disk i have is from Dell. Now I cannot get Windows to activate with the Toshiba's old key, because of the Dell disk. Is there anyway around this? Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Using Dell Windows Disk on a Toshiba Laptop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Guys!

I am having a perhaps unique problem while trying to install Windows 7 in my Mini Toshiba Netbook.

Error message: "Windows cannot be installed to this disk. This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

Details: Toshiba NB505-N508BL using an external USB DVD Drive with a clean and working copy of Windows 7 32 Bits (I used this ISO before without any issues).

Troubleshooting steps:

1: Tried with 2 different hard drives.
2: Booting priority is correctly set
3: Bios was set to default values and AHCI is properly set in the Bios instead of SATA

Still, same error message...

What else could be wrong? faulty motherboard? hard disk cable connection? or do I simply need the original Windows 7 disk that came with the mini laptop? (I don't think so). Or perhaps I am missing an extra step in the Bios?

Any ideas or suggestions?

Yesterday I was about to send an e-mail when I decided instead to go to lunch. I left the computer turned on when I left. When I returned I was surprised to see the following onscreen message:

Windows detected a hard disk problem

Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk.

I was given two options:

(1) Start the backup process

(2) Ask me again later
If the disk fails before the next warning, you could lose all of the programs and documents on the disk.

I then clicked on Show details and was warned to back up my important information immediately. Moreover, I was instructed to try not to use my computer until the hard disk has been repaired or replaced.

Under Which disk is failing the name of the hard disk is given. At the end it reads ATA Device.
Volume: C:\

Starting at around noon on Sunday I received this message twice in less than an hour. It's now 14 hours later and it hasn't reappeared. At someone's suggestion I am currently running CHKDSK and waiting for the results.

Does getting this message invariably mean there's a serious problem, or could it be received inadvertently, without any actual problem. At any rate, I've spent all day backing up all the stuff I care to save, just in case there is something amiss.

Should I continue using my laptop as though there is no problem, or should I follow the message instructions and ca... Read more

Answer:Windows detected a hard disk problem on my Toshiba (Vista) laptop

Well, it's Monday afternoon, and my laptop continues to work very, very well -- no signs yet of any hard drive problem. Can I expect it to conk out at any minute? Or could the warning message have been nothing more than a false positive?

By the way, I ran CHKDSK last night. When I went to bed it was at 15%, so I figured it would be finished by the time I woke up. When I got to my laptop this morning I expected to see a lengthy list of CHKDSK results. Much to my surprise I saw instead my normal screen: wallpaper and icons. So I clicked on GOOGLE CHROME and started surfing the Net.

Now I have a few more questions. Where in the heck do I find my CHKDSK results? Could it be that my laptop, indeed, did have hard drive problems which now have been repaired by CHKDSK? If so, wouldn't the CHKDSK results give me an answer? If there are problems which are irreparable, would the CHKDSK results tell me so? I would just like to know where I stand. At this point I have absolutely no idea if my hard drive is, or is not, about to die. It would be good to be able to find out, if indeed that's possible. I would be most grateful to anyone who might be able to help. Thank you.

I need to put Windows 7 on a new internal hard drive that's in my Samsung laptop. I found someone who has a Windows 7 disk for sale, unopened, along with the drivers disk, but it says Dell on it. Would it work on my Samsung laptop, even though it's not a Samsung hard drive, or would it only be made to work on a Dell computer?

I checked the 'Computer' properties and I see that I now have 14 days to activate windows. Could I use the key from my previous Vista to upgrade to 7 or would I need to reinstall vista ? Thanks!

Need some help and information please to get my toshiba laptop going again. Its a Satellite A300-1mc running Vista 32 bit which has a pre-installed hdd recovery. When I first bought it I tried making the recovery disks and it copied the first one ok but gave me an error when writing the second disk.I didnt pursue this any further as didnt think I would ever need them..but kept the disks anyway.

Fast forward a year later and now have a problem.Every so often I liked to re-install Vista and would do this through the prompt keys within vista which obviously formats the hdd and puts fresh windows back on.The last time I did this the procedure seemed to stop while it was formatting so had to power down.On power up I now have nothing except the message BOOTMGR is missing.Well I tried the recovery disks I had.Took the first one ok but stopped on second disk.

Ive been to the Neosmart webite and got the recovery disc software which seems to give me Bootmgr and gives me the screen to do restore/repair etc but because it looks like my windows Vista is not there anymoreand I cant recover it etc. From that same screen I am able to enter command prompt which I can view some of my hdd in dos mode(amateur at this by the way). From there it looks like on C drive I have a folder Temp and Vista but to my untrained eye they look empty. From the same prompt I can see on drive (E with dir/w that it has a folder called HDD recovery.I am assuming that is my recovery Image of WinVista. So wha... A few months ago my Toshiba laptop blue screened and never recovered. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is and after trying everything I could to recover the laptop I'm still at a loss as to what exactly the problem is. I'm an experienced IT person and usually can get things like this working but before I go out and buy a new motherboard, I just want to make sure that is what the problem is.

When trying to boot from any disk to say reinstall windows or even boot into a live CD, the computer freezes. I've tried to install Windows XP and Windows 7, but the laptop will freeze during the disk bootup and not get anywhere near the install portion.

I've also tried booting from a Linux live CD, into BartPE and also a mini-XP version and all freeze during the boot up process. I've tried replacing memory, that didn't fix the solution. I get one beep during bootup so I assume all is fine there.

Basically my next move of action is to buy a new motherboard and try that, but I don't want to go and spend the money only to replace it and find out that wasn't the problem.

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

i got toshiba laptop which has
80 Gb HDD capacity,
out of which 7 GB is compressed by toshiba to load OS and drivers,
thus actual available space is 72 GB
PROBLEM: i created C drive of 15 GB. recently i formated C drive and reinstalled OS with drivers. i dont know how come it comsumes 12-13 GB of 15 GB total allocated to C drive. I checked everything properly and i found twice after fresh installation of normal OS Win XP Pro.
My question is does a mormal OS requires this much of space? one more thing i didnt install any other application. I want more disk space on C drive. i know on my normal desltop it doesnt happen, it doesnt comsum this much of space.
i need solution for this. how to reduce disk space on C drive. how to overcome through this problem. it's not poissible. i know a C driive with normal OS and drivers hardly consums 3 GB space at the most.

Hi to all - first post

I know the best reply to my issues is "don't re-install OS from the wrong CD", but that's done. I'm sure MS wouldn't like it, but the Dell disk I used is from a dead laptop I bought new, so I'm keeping with the spirit of the law, if not the letter of the law.

Bottom line, I wanted to use XP Pro on the Toshiba rather than XP Home Edition that came with.

Laptop is a Toshiba Satellite 1410-814 - C 1.8 GHz - 15" TFT

The initial install from Dell pre-SP cd seemed to go alright, though I never tried out the audio. After installing SP2, however, my display changed - there's a gap of about 1/2" running from top to bottom of the screen that is black. In my control panel, the maximum resolution setting is 969 X 768. How can I turn that 969 to 1024?

The second problem has to do with the audio. The Dell CD apparently mis-identified my Yamaha AC - XG WDM device as a generic MCI device. I have no audio at all. The loss of sound on this card when installing SP2 is a known issue. I have downloaded both the updated generic Yamaha AC - XG driver and the Toshiba driver which is specific to my machine. Both of these drivers come inside executables and both packages have failed to complete the installation.

I am unable to uninstall or delete the generic MCI device from my device manager. I have a feeling that this is at the root of my problem. The hardware wizard will not detect my sound card because I'm unable to... Read more

if you buy a new windows and install it, it will wipe the whole hd and install your windows on it. This will get rid all the files on the hd.. This will remove the virus and whatever you have on the laptop, so all your files and such. When you install the new windows, make sure you choose format to format the HD to ensure the HD got wiped clean. Then proceed to windows installtion. AFter it's done, go to toshiba's website and download the needed driver for your system.

I have a Toshiba C55t-A5123 that had a Windows 10 upgrade installed on to a wiped hard drive. (No going to Settings to revert back to previous OS.)
The CD/DVD drive,(I had changed boot order to look at the Optical drive first), with a Win7 install disk was not recognized at boot up to facilitate a complete new Win7 install over top of the current Win10 OS.

I re-wiped the hard drive and formatted it to NTFS, and then used the disk manager from another laptop to change it to GPT!
When I tried to use my Windows 7 Ultimate DVD to re-install (changed boot order so OD CD\DVD was first) but this C55t wont boot from the DVD! Now this is the same DVD that came with this unit but yet it wont boot the Win7 install DVD!!

I read where THIS Toshiba model (because Toshiba was in cahoots with Microsoft) has no provision in BIOS to switch to from UEFI to CSM, UNLESS the bios was updated to v 1.03 (I think that is the latest version)! I did disable "Secure boot" which was the only associated option!

I then created a GPT UEFI USB memstick with Win7 Ult ISO, which booted fine and installed Win7 Ultimate to the re-GPT'ed 500gb SATA hard drive.

But on reboot after Win7 Ult install the ONLY bootable media device found was the USB Win7 memstick???

This C55t-A5123 will only boot to the memstick and completely bypasses (changed boot order to make HDD first) the GPT HDD that has just had Win7 Ulitmate successfully installed!

If I let it boot to the USB... Read more

Sounds like a faulty hard drive is the cause - F12 at powerup.  Boot to the Dell diagnostics and run an extended test (not just the quick test) on the hard drive -- you'll likely find it fails, in which case - replace the drive and reload.

Hi I've got a one and a half year old laptop similar to this one.

It suddenly became really slow to an unusable level a few days ago and got a windows warning saying there's some issues with the hard disk. It asked me to run diagnostic and automatic repair. When I did that, it went into a loop of boot screen and different options that I can recover/reset windows, etc and I can never go back to the windows anymore. I've tried resetting/restoring and command line chkdsk command, but none of those work so far. It happened once before, that I had to reinstall windows but I'm now suspecting it might be a hardware issue. Can someone suggest what I can do to fix the laptop? Thanks

I bought a new Dell i3847 and it has Windows 7 Pro 64bit factory installed on it.
I wanted to do a full system backup, but the Dell Backup and Recovery software will not allow me to do a system backup.  Further, I have been unable to create a system recovery disk using Dell Backup and Recovery.
I can't use the Dell provided system disk for recovery because it is clearly marked Windows 8.1

1) Why is a Win 8.1 disk included with a Win 7 Pro 64bit system?
2) What is wrong with Dell Backup and Recovery that it:
a) can't create a factory recovery disk
b) won't allow me to create a system back up so I can return it to the factory state

It's been 2.5 hours and it is still "initializing disk" to create a factory recovery.  It usually fails somewhere during initialization or writing.    Spending hours for each failed attempt to create a factory recovery disk is NOT GOOD!

My Dell N5050 laptop died and I tried moving the Harddisk into a old HP Deskpro. The disk boots fine but Windows 7 DELL OEM reboots as the windows picture comes up. It then allows me to do a repair but that doesn't help. The repair report doesn't give any clue to the problem.

I am guessing it is some fundamental driver that is Dell specific. Any idea how to sort it ?

2. If dell can provide the requested, what are the charges for the same?
3. Can the OEM version of the windows 8 be installed to another computer? What I meant is that how many licenses does I get with OEM version or how many times I can reinstall the operating system during the life cycle of the product(Windows 8) using the same key?

Answer:How to get the WIndows 8 installation disk/recovery disk from dell?

Hi Nitin,
The Windows product key is pre-installed in Dell systems. However may I know the reason why you are looking out for a disc?
If the computer is not booting up and if you want to request for a disc then you may use the below link:  (For U.S only)
If the system is working normally, you may create a system restore disc by following the below steps in Windows 8:
(1) Move to mouse pointer to the top right corner and click on the search button.
(2) Select applications, type Dell backup and recovery and select search.
(3) On the left side you may click on the application.
(4) Once the application opens select recovery disc and create rescue disc.
OEM discs (Win8) can be installed on any Dell computers (if Windows 8 is pre-installed in that computer from factory).
It is suggested to use OEM image for re-installation purpose.

Can anyone please advise me on how I can obtain a restore disk for my Dell Latitude Laptop Computer, model No CPx H450GT I have lost mine and need to replace it in case my computer crashes and I have to reinstall.

Answer:restore disk for dell laptop needed

Which Operating system? I am pretty sure you can order a replacement set from Dell themselves. You could try their support site and then put in your computers serial number. If you registered the computer when you bought it you won`t have to do this, then e-mail support and tell them the problem. There will probably be a charge but someone here may be prepared to send you a copy of the disks.I strongly recommend you download Belarc click here run it and print out the results. This will give you all the current info about your computer including software registration keys. If you do suffer a crash and have to reinstall all the keys will be recorded in case you can`t find original disks.I would also recommend you download all the updated drivers for your Dell and burn them to disk. Then you are prepared for the worst scenario. click here

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. It came with Windows XP, but I reformatted and installed Windows 2000 professional instead, which I am mostly happy with, but one of my favorite video games can only be played on XP, so now I want to go back to XP. I have Dell's disk called: Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. I have the BIOS set so the CDROM boots first, and when I start the computer, the CD is recognized, but then I get an error in DOS saying "Couldn't find NTLDR", and Windows 2000 proceeds to boot.

I've also explored the Dell XP disk and tried installing it that way using setup.exe, but when I go to check system compatability, I get two errors:

"The procedure entry point NtUnloadKeyEx is not in Ntdll.dll."
"Winnt32u.dll could not be loaded or is corrupt"

So I'm dead in the water. Should I try to start my computer with my windows 2000 disk, go through that interface, then somehow make the switch to the Dell XP disk? The problem is, I don't want to have to reformat my computer. (I will though, as a last resort).

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Can't install Dell's XP disk over Win 2000 on laptop

The Recovery CD is a mirror of the original hardrive when it left the factory. It was designed to bring your laptop back to it's original out of the box condition. For it to work, when it is loaded it compares a varity of things to determine that the laptop is the one it is assigned to. In other words, so you can't use it on another comuter. When you put Win2k on your laptop, the Recovery CD sees this as "another computer" and thus won't work. You probably will have to format the hardrive and wipe it clean and then the CD should work but don't count on it as Recovery CD's on some systems can be quite finicky.

My boyfriend's laptop is an Extensa that came with Vista pre-loaded and a nasty huge hidden partition. In addition, they didn't provide any sort of disc for reinstall. We would really like to get rid of this hidden partition and reinstall his Vista. We have a Dell Vista disc from a friend of his, but we don't want to try formatting and installing this disc unless we're positive that it will work. So if we were to do a full format and then try to install using this disc, would it work successfully and would the hidden partition be gone?

The hidden partition you're referring to is more than likely the recovery partition for that particular laptop. If I were you, I'd visit the computer manufacturer's website for instructions on how to perform a full system well as reading your owner's manual. This is why your computer did not come with recovery software...performing a full system recovery will wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall all the software that originally came with this consider yourselves warned.  When you perform this recovery...all the data you've added since its purchase will be gone and will have to be added again.  Hopefully, you've been backing up as you go...Good luck!

I just bought a new Toshiba A105-S361 and I unpacked the software that came with the computer to find there is only one cd. It is the app and driver cd which is all good and well except that isn't good enough. My previous laptops had plenty of problems and my life was saved over and over by my xp cd. Toshiba appearently doesn't give me a backup cd for XP and it doesn't have me create one like my gateway did(Which I didn't like because I couldn't choose what drivers to install. I need that control). Praying that my Toshiba doesn't have as many hard drive failures as my ex-HP laptop, which I returned for my money, will not protect me from my horribly bad luck. How do I get a backup xp cd?

Edit: Not to mention this will be really annoying when I decide to mess around with dual-booting linux.

I brought my laptop at christmas, it didn't come with a windows disk (they may be on at the bottom of the box, which i'll check when i get home) but came pre-loaded with Windows Vista.
I have some XP disks but i don't want to go back to XP right now.
So, if i don't have a disk, is it possible to send off for one?

I want to format due to unresponsive commands and mutiple errors on start up.
That and it has gone incredibly slow. I've tried to scan for viruses with McAffe and AVG, as well as proper Norton and it will not find anything, despite obvious sighs.

Sorry if it's in the wrong section, i really couldn't tell...

That and, what's Set Up Utility?
Can i use that? When i start my laptop up, it's by 'Enter boot menu'

Answer:Can Toshiba send me a new windows disk?

> So, if i don't have a disk, is it possible to send off for one?
I don?t know what notebook you have but I assume your notebook has been equipped with the HDD recovery.
This allows you to recover the notebook without using any Recovery disk.

Of course there should be a option which would allows you to create a own recovery DVD. Read you user manual!

From my experience you could use the preinstalled Toshiba Recovery Disk Creator.

Cannot load O/s as a new HD has been Installed not seen

Answer:Cannot find driver for new hard disk Dell Laptop

If the mboard's bios Setup is NOT detecting the hard drive.....Some hard drives in older laptops have a gender adapter that's plugged into the pins on the original drive that must be removed and installed on the replacement drive. That's obvious because on the new drive you can see the pins, on the old drive it doesn't look the same because of the gender adapter. If the mboard's bios Setup IS detecting the hard drive, but your problem is the computer is not detecting a bootable hard drive, new hard drives (or used hard drives that have had their data deleted) have no data on them and cannot be seen by the bios as bootable (having had an operating system installed on them). That problem will go away after you have installed Windows on the drive from the Vista DVD, or after you have installed the contents of the Recovery disks for the specific model. If the bios Setup IS detecting the hard drive but the initial files loaded from the Windows DVD, or from the Recovery disk set for your specific model, are NOT detecting it...If the drive is SATA......This is about XP - it has no SATA drive controller drivers built into it.Similar applies to Vista - it has some SATA drive controller drivers built into it, but not all possible SATA drive controller drivers. You can provide the SATA drive controller drivers to Vista on other media other than a floppy disk, such as a flash drive, or you can set the SATA drive controller mode to an IDE compatible mode in the bios. Hi Guys,

Last week I found my Laptop was hanging/lagging as soon as i get my Desktop screen. At first i thought it should be a Virus problem, but i had latest Kaspersky Internet security software. When i ran it, laptop freezes. Booted the laptop in safe mode and tried uninstalling few memory consuming programs, still no luck.

Ran Dell memory test and found a problem with Hard disk. I had 4 partitions(c:\ is primary where OS is installed). I formatted the C:\ drive and tried re-installing Windows Vista, but it was an failure, I tried this more than 10 times in different ways.

I had second thought to connect this Hard Disk to another computer as secondary drive and to move data to other drive. So I bought a new Hard Drive and Installed vista on it and it works fine.

I bought 2.5" Hard Disk connector and connected to laptop. It showed as Mass storage device connected, but when i went to "My Computer" I could not see the any other drives except the new drive.

I went to Disk Management and found the crashed drive and it showed as "Unallocated"

I seeked help of an expert but he said it will very expensive (>3500$) which is not affordable. I need an help. I have helped many of them in this forum to resolve their issues, lemme see if someone can help me on this.

I have a dell laptop with an i7, a lx502 , and a samsung 512Mo ssd, runing windows x64 8.1

When I want to update to Win 10, the 5 gb file never gets downloaded (very slowly, in say 2hrs) and the pc get frozen at 20%, only power cycle can restart it.
Sometimes, the SSD is not detected anymore by the Bios. I need to remove the battery and wait several minutes.

I have these messages in the event log

-Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.
-The IO operation at logical block address xxxx for Disk X was retried.

This is like the hard disk gets disconnected from the PC

I found this
Windows 8 Freezes or Hangs: The Fix that Worked for Me | Scottie

not working, and the BIOS does not feature hot swap

Tried this
AHCI Link Power Management - Enable HIPM and DIPM - Windows 7 Help Forums

not working

Tried to disable PCI sleep and so on...
For sure this is a bug from windows 8, the disk is Ok because I have written at the same time several gigabytes (500) , and have not a single error.
This is something related to power saving I'm sure.

If anyone has an idea to overcome this ...

It is possible that your SSD is failing, or that since your laptop is over 4 years old, that the hardware is starting to fail.

I am currently living in Saudi Arabia and purchased a Dell Laptop (N Series). When I bought the laptop, the salesman loaded Windows & Premium and Microsoft Office with a USB drive. I need to restore the laptop back to factory settings during the rebooting stage, it says I need to insert a disk which I was never given. Help please!

Answer:Restore Dell Laptop to Factory Settings without disk.

What's the model name and model number of that Dell laptop?

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on the sticker?

Does that laptop have a Microsoft Certificate-Of-Authenticity sticker on it that has a Windows version and a 25-character product key?

Note: If it does, do not submit the product key here.

Can I reuse these discs for other installs on these laptops?

They are labelled for Toshiba upgrade only and that's fine as all our machines are Toshiba.

The subject nearly completely identifies the subject.  I have a dual drive g73s with windows 7 one the first drive.  I added a second drive on which I wish to install windows xp pro.  All I have is the reinstallation disk which I purchased with my xps 1710 laptop in 2005.  I have found another use for the xps 1710, it now has been upgraded (?) to windows 7 and is in use under my control elsewise.  When I attempt to install the xp pro on the second hard drive (in the first drive position or in the second position) all I get is a blue screen suggesting I look for a virus (the second drive is formatted and clean).  I wonder if I purchase a second unused installation disk with a new key, etc, genuine (we hope) if that would make any difference.  I am really perplexed with this problem.  I have in times past been able to install from this installation cd in a barebone desktop assembly, without any problem for the first 30 days.  Anyone have any ideas?  I really want to be able to use xp on this new computer.Wendell[email protected]email addy removed to prevent SPAM.

I have a dell inspirion 9100 and I just recently installed a new dvd-ram drive because the old dvd-rw died...
I have a pioneer dvr-k16 and when I boot up it stalls for like 30 seconds now and then flashes "secondary hard disk drive 0 not found". Windows starts up like normal and my drive works, although I've only watched movies so far and haven't tried burning anything. How do I get the error message to go away? I've tried going into setup and that doesn't seem to help anything because I don't know what to do in there. I keep reading on other threads that you have to change the slave to cs or something like that but I have no clue as to how to do any of that or if that would even alleviate my situation. Maybe just a dirty computer? I do have two cats and I have fur balls floating all over the place that I can't seem to get rid of...that's a whole seperate issue of course. HELP?

Answer:secondary hard disk drive 0 not found on a dell laptop what do I do?

The bios in your laptop was set up to use your old drive, the specs on your new drive will be different.

First off, have a look at the drive you took out to see if it was set to master, slave, or cable select. To do this, have a look at the back end of the drive near the connector for the jumper setting, then make sure your new drive is set the same.

Then you need to go into the bios and look for any options to scan for hard drives (this will scan for optical drives too). You need to make sure its set to your new drive and not your old one.

If you don't know how to do any of this the your manual will help, if you don't have it you can probably download one from dell.

If you still have problems then let me know and i will do my best to help further.

100 GB hard drive worked well. One day - it stopped.
"Primary hard disk drive 0 not found
No bootable devices..."

No disks in BIOS are shown now

Same story couple months before that was with another 80GB harddisk.
Several files on drive C (FAT) though were corrupted (CHKDSK corrected that)

"Fun" is:
1) Harddisk works fine if placed into desktop PC, no problems with any diagnostics
2) laptop works fine with small size old 4 GB harddrive

Harddrive connector problem???? BIOS problem with nonstandard size harddisks (DELL sold this notebook only with 60 GB max). Old not supported firmware ?

Dell Customer Support after several diagnoistics by phone only suggested to buy ane more disk and check. But I afraid that most probably it will not work

So I just got a new laptop. I always wipe it then reinstall the OS to get rid of all the crap they load.

Was horrified to find there is no OS disk. Via Dell support, I am to use the recovery option which will simply put all the crap right back my laptop. They will NOT send me an OS disk even though I paid for a license. What crap!

I've got Windows 7 Home Premium 64. I was thinking about borrowing a cd and using my serial #, but is it true that because it's oem, no other disk will work with my comp?

Am I just screwed?

Appreciate any advice!

Answer:Idiotic Bloat Ware On New Dell Laptop, Will Not Send My OS Disk!

If you have a Windows 7 installation DVD, all you need to locate is the Dell royalty key and the Dell .xrm-ms digital license. You can find both of them over at's forums. Install the OS, don't put in a key during the installation, then once it's up and running, install the .xrm-ms license file (you'll find instructions at that other forum), then install the royalty key, activate online, you're done - legally legitimately licensed.

Answer:Dell Laptop w/ Windows 8 won't boot past dell logo screen

Hello Univers789,
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.

I am hoping for some advice / assistance in getting my laptop going.
I have a Toshiba Satellite A500 that was preinstalled with Windows 7 home premium.
Went to turn it on today and got a screen that said:
Windows Error recovery.
Windows failed to start.
A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
It then gives the option to run windows start up repair or run windows normally.

The repair option starts but ends up with a grey back ground screen and a mouse arrow on the screen.
Nothing else happens after this .

I tried the start Windows normally option but it gets as far as the Windows logo and no further.

The only recent change has been the addition of a new modem / router, other then that it has been business as usual with no changes.

Unsure where to go from here.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Answer:Windows 7 won't run on my Toshiba laptop.

Hiyya and welcome ggms Now mate what have you got on the machine because I recently had a similar problem and it happened when I changed the RAM in it. So have you actually done nay hardware changes lately and don't forget even stuff like new keyboard mouse etc.

I have also had two Toshiba laptops and both have been nothing but trouble and the current one I have had to factory default five times because of hardware issues. If you have backed up your data that could be an option albeit not appealing.

I bought my daughter a Tosiba Laptop that came with Windows 7 installed on it. She wants to put a Sims game on it but it won't let her so we want to install Winodws XP on it instead.

The questions and problems we are haiving is it loads all the drivers for XP and then it goes to the blue screen after it loads everything.

Is that because Toshiba has something bulit into BIOS or something that won't let us put XP on it?

Is there any way to load Win 7 and XP as a duel boot?

Is there a way to load win XP from windows 7 without doing it from a clean install?

How can we work around this?

Thank you.

Answer:Toshiba Laptop/Windows 7

You can dual boot Win 7 & XP but only if you can install XP. I seriously doubt Toshiba's done anything to prevent you from installing XP so it's probably a driver issue (although it depends on how you're installing XP-if it's from an OEM disk then that version of XP might be looking for a specific BIOS). The easiest way, IMO, is to upgrade Windows 7 to the Professional version which includes a virtual XP. I haven't used that (yet) so I can't be certain, but I think it does use the Windows 7 drivers for the actual hardware, virtualizing them so they'll work in XP.

when using the above card, and TRENDnet TEW-311BRP WireLess Broadband Router, I cannot get a stable connection.

It always connect and disconnect me.

I use this machine and card all over the world: airports, hotels, offices and it works great.

I asked the dealer to replace the 311. Same problem.

However, if I stick TRENDnet PCMCIA card and disable the Toshiba Wireless LAN Mini PCI Card, I connect w/o disconnections.

any idea?

This laptop will not allow the user to use his keyboard because keys open up start button features. I am saying that the r opens run, e opens explorer,d opens show desktop,f opens get the picture. No other combination of keys is needed. Just the single key is designated. What is happening here? There are no Hot Keys turned on so we can see but it is like we are holding the control or alt key down with these keys. It is not a new keyboard needed either because we checked it out and The Laptop(evil thing) is still operating in this fashion. Anybody have a clue about how to solve this??

Check in your Startup folder as well as in MSConfig-program if you have any software starting there that you don't know. Maybe someone installed some utility, that does this.

Make sure that the Alt and Ctrl and Shift keys are not stuck.

i have a toshiba sattelite series laptop that is giving me some problems and i would like to re-install windows on it. i have the 2 disk cd/dvd reboot disk set that came with the laptop when it was purchased new. i put the disk into the cd/dvd drive and it did not automatically start up the re-install. so i tried pressing c at the toshiba start up screen (like it instructs to do), and it doesnt do anything either. i tried running the cd from the desktop (my computer, disk drive), and that did not work either (it says the disk may not be compatible with windows or the disk is not formatted, but i know that can not be the case as they are the disks that came with the computer --they are not burnt disks). does anyone have any idea how to get the computer to restore to factory settings --re-install windows. THANKS!

As the title says I have a Toshiba Satellite L450D-13X laptop. It has Windows 7 and is a 64-bit system (I believe - I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to computers!). For some time my USB memory stick hasn't worked on it, in fact I can't remember if it ever did or just on my old laptop. Then I noticed my iPod won't charge or be read at all either. I believe another memory stick did once work so does this just mean these 2 items aren't compatible or something?
I also bought a CNM external HDD from on a good deal but it won't work as the USB ports don't read it. I'm sure it detected 'new hardware found' at first but then nothing, you can't even find the USB ports in 'Computer'. I looked on the box and it seems only to be compatible with 32-bit systems.
Will I need to convert the laptop to 32-bit to get everything working or is there some other problem?
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Installing windows 8 on to old toshiba laptop?

The best way to resolve this issues ?Driver installation? would be to use compatibility mode; the reason it?s because the driver that we want to install has an older version that is not being recognize by Windows 8. Please follow the link bellow for the steps in how to use compatibility mode in Windows 8.

I have a 7 year old Toshiba satellite laptop M35X. I was having trouble getting it to load (like some other people on this forum have mentioned). Anyway, I put a new hard drive in. But I no longer have the disc to load Windows XP. In fact, I'm not sure I ever had it. What do I do now? I've heard that you have to get a disk specific to Toshiba. Is there some place to find one? Is it worth putting in a new operating system?

Hi guys, installed windows 7 on this laptop that seems to fit the spec requirements, 1.7 ghz cpu with 512 mb of ram (I will be increasing the ram to 1 gig shortly) so on the face of it seems ok. some odd thigs have happend though, the aero stuff wont work as the graphics card is 32 mb trident 2100 some drivers are not installed, the microsoft update sorts most of that out but the sd card reader shows as a base system in the device manager a driver from toshiba for xp goes in but when you insert a sd card the unit wont operate saying there are unavailable resorces so its switched off.if you try windows vista, that it will run at a desparate stuggle the sd card appears in the device manager no probs, is there any way around this as im sort of caught between vista and 7 for funtionallity which would be best any advice would be helpful.

Please help me and I do not have a recovery disk with me and maybe there is any other way to restore my laptop. Thank you and more power.

Answer:Toshiba laptop windows 8 crashed

Without some type of recovery media, you may be at a disadvantage in repairing your system, but could you be a little more descriptive as to what your system is doing?

When you boot, does it go into the Recovery options, or show a black screen, make any noises, etc.?

Can you access any of the OEM Recovery special keys to do diagnostics on the system or get into the Bios?

The error would appear to be telling you some device needed for boot is not accessible. If you could boot into the bios, you might be able to check that you still have the correct boot device, probably the Windows Boot Manager, available and selected as primary boot device.

If you have external drives connected, you might want to remove those for testing.

My daughter has problems that I thought were taken care of last week running read me first procedure. Last night just before bed my wife told me she was still having problems, I thought I would be helpful & run the procedure again I only got to the finishing of Mawarebytes scan last night & thought I would finish the rest today. Well just before running the TDS Killer I read to not do this again but post the logs. I am attaching last weeks logs but have the Rogue & MB (from last night) if needed. When she is on the internet she is controlled with programs trying to get her to use this virus removal software in multiple ways. Last week I had to run all the scans in safe mode. Sorry for my starting the running again, please help.

Not the correct thing to do. We need logs from normal boot mode to see what is really going on. Safe mode is only to be used when a PC cannot be run in normal boot mode. Safe mode is only a let's get started some how method. Eventually normal boot mode is a must. But first please do the below:

Uninstall the below. If they do not uninstall or you cannot find them, keep going but explain to me later what happened.

Optimizer Pro v3.2
Spyware Clear

Reboot now.

After reboot, now run the scans and attach logs from normal boot mode.

Hello, For about 2 weeks now I've been experiencing slow connection/connection drop on my new laptop. I tried checking if my other laptop (Lenovo) has same problem but it's perfectly fine. The connection speed is 10mb/s for OLD laptop but the NEW one is barely 2mb/s. This is really frustrating I tried almost everything. My broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter Driver Date is 28/01/2014 maybe that's the problem? I tried updating but it says your driver is up-to-date. Please help.

Unfortunately all wireless cards are not equal if updateing or rolling back the driver doesn't work try changing the wireless channel in the router.
if still no go then try a USB wireless dongle in the affected laptop.

On Sunday, May 8, my black Toshiba laptop with a fairly large screen, (maybe 17 inches), became incompetent. It was working normally in the morning. I stopped using it during the afternoon for about an hour. I wasn't downloading anything; it wasn't sleeping nor was it shut off,it was simply there with the screen light off. I wanted to reuse it, so i moved the mouse and tried to open Firefox. It would not open. The button would respond when clicked but no sign of it ever loading nor hint of it ever going to. I gave up and went to my documents and tried to open a word document. Libraries> Documents bar would show it loading but it took more than 7 minutes so i gave up (it never opened). My Laptop became very slow. I tried logging off, but even that took long. So i went to start menu and clicked on shut off. In the process my computer froze, then turned dark (not showing any apps) and i decided to turn it off by holding down the power button. i turned it back on and it would say the toshiba logo as normal. Then the white blinking line (also normal). But the windows loading bar would take too long (maybe 10 minutes) then another windows bar that was white would appear and load(not normal). it would be dark for 5 minutes. Then the windows start up repair would appear. i ran start up repair. It didnt work. I tried it repeatedly but nothing. Then after it restarted itself, it went to a black screen that read launch startup repair(recommended) . I entered and it would appear to b... Read more

I bought a new Toshiba laptop (L300-1DN) for someone this year and they have Vista SP2 on it (obviously fully included with Toshiba drivers etc. which are also on a recovery disk). There is an option to buy an upgrade version for Vista users of Win 7 HP, but I have already bought a full version of Win 7 Pro, and my preference is a clean install as I'm not too sure about the success rate of upgrades and efficiency of the new operating system afterwards...

Therefore if I do a clean install of Win 7 Pro, what's the situation regarding drivers? I was told that Win 7 has many manufacturers' drivers built into it's kernel and that any manual update of drivers should be minimal?

Thanks for any advice.

Answer:Install Windows 7 Pro in Toshiba laptop

If there is not a default driver on the Win7 dvd then you can check Toshiba's website for a newer one. If you dont locate it then you could always use the Vista driver since Win 7 is close to Vista design.

I have a Toshiba Satellite I think? The hd took a poo a while back so I got a new one and ordered a new windows 7 installation disk. When I put the disc in the drive doesn't run, and the main screen remains black with a blinking cursor. Anyone have any ideas on how to get it to run? I was wondering if I could buy an external cd drive and plug it in and if that would be able to run the disc incase my disc drive took a poo too?

Answer:installing windows 7 on Toshiba laptop w/ New hd

You need to enter BIOS and set first boot device the CD/DVD rom or use one time boot menu which is easier (you don't need to change boot order back to HDD after first installation restart). You can use external USB DVD like it is normal internal device.
Usually boot menu is on F12 button.
Hope I helped you.

My laptop has started running VERY slow. It has also started freezing and nothing resolves the issue except a hard reset. I thought I might have a virus, so I got help from Malware Removal. All the scans came up clean with no viruses, but she said that I had ALOT of programs running continuously in the background which might explain why it was running so slow. She suggested me to come here and see if you could help me, so here I am!!! We got an odd message the other day saying we didn't have enough memory for windows media player to play, and to shut down all the other programs, and nothing else was running. That time was the only time we have EVER seen a message like that. Windows media player isn't playing right, it keeps freezing and cutting itself off. The cursor has also started going biserck and floating all over the screen. It has gotten to the point that it is extremely hard to move. Scrolling down a internet page is a nightmare. It freezes when you try to scroll up or down.

I am a college student and a lot of my classes are online. This is my only computer and my instructors are not very understanding when it freezes and I can't complete my timed test. So, any help is appreciated!!!!!

Answer:how to get rid of toshiba laptop windows bloatware?

You will have to be more specific than that since most of us do not have the same computer. In general, you do not want outside utilities like back up, clean up, defrag, firewall, or anything from Norton or McAfee. otherwise, you are going to have to list them or Google them for a more specific answer. Some people will keep most of what is labeled from the system manufacturer, most will keep some, and some will wipe the drive and reinstall Windows from scratch. You will probably end up somewhere in the middle. Anything from outside sources, keep only if you think you may need it (like DVD burning software, etc.).You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
