Preferred Solution: No sound suddenly on my dell inspiron 1545

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: No sound suddenly on my dell inspiron 1545

The internal laptop speakers are INOP?

Go into Device Manager, expand "Sound..." and uninstall ALL devices.

Reboot the system.

Check audio.

Update drivers -

Is Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installed?

I have had my dell for approx 3 years now and the other day my sound suddenly stopped working (no sound from ear plugs either). I restarted the computer and it made no difference. I can't play any sounds (no sound when the comp turns on, no sound on itunes, "Itunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration,"Youtube etc etc you get the picture.

I found some solutions online but none of the settings seem to have changed when I attempted to change them. So I went into safe mode and the speaker icon on the bottom right hand corner has a cross on it indicating that there is no sound (there was nothing of the sort when i wasn't in safe mode) I looked for solutions online and went into Services > Windows Audio to press START and the following came up "Windows could not start the windows audio service on local computer error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start."

I have also tried system restore, but am unable to do so and the following appears "No restore systems have been created on your computer's system disk."

Please someone help, thank you in advance

Answer:No sound at all on my Dell Inspiron 1545

The first thing I would recommend would be go to dell's site and download the audio drivers for your machine

Drivers & Downloads

make sure to download the right one for your operating system (vista, 7 or xp)
install them and see if that fixes the issue

Hello everyone,

Recently I've restored my Win7 installation using the original install image on the computer.
Since then my sound is not working properly - once every few seconds it jumps and makes weird noises.

I've tried updating the sound card drivers, and/or installing new codecs, but to no avail.
This happens with every music/video file on my computer and also when playing online content. The problem remains with any music/video player (tested WMP, Winamp, VLC, etc...), with speakers or headphones.

A few days ago a friend of mine suggested this might be caused due to a memory issue.
Something about memory paths getting rewired in the wrong way.
I've also noticed that when this happens my mouse pointer is sort of stuck.

If anyone has had this problem and/or knows how to fix it, I'd love to know about it...

Appreciate your help,

Answer:Sound trouble, could be a memory issue? (Dell Inspiron 1545)

When you restored, did you do it with the "F8" Dell Recovery Partition on the hard drive? Or did you do it manually with discs?

One issue we see on the Dell user forum is that the Dell sound driver must be used for proper operation.

Outdated device drivers such as video can also cause this.

Have done a diagnostics and have received error 0151.
What do I do next please.

Answer:DELL INSPIRON 1545 Model 1545-0925 won't boot

I'm assuming windows 7 is on the system and I also assume the error code is 2000- 0151
The error code means there's an issue with the hard drive, and most likely needs to be replace with a new one. You could reseat the hard drive to see if that will make any difference.

Over the last 2 days I have been having a problem as indicated in the title of this post. The fault has rectified itself 3 times, but again today, it is back to "battery plugged in, not charging." As I am running the laptop (Windows Vista Home Premium; 32 bit) on the adapter without problems, I assume that the adapter itself may not be faulty.
I also have a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop running Windows 7.  Can I safely use that adapter with the Vista laptop, without causing damage to the Vista ?  If it is safe to do so, and the battery on the Vista starts charging, then it would indicate that the Vista adapter/charger has some kind of fault.
Hoping someone can give me some guidance. Thanks.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. Battery plugged in not charging. Can I use adapter from a Dell Inspiron 630M laptop ?

If the adapter has the same plug and the same or higher power rating, you can swap them.
Check to see whether the 1545 recognizes the AC adapter or whether it shows unknown (F2 at powerup).  If it shows unknown with two different adapters, you have a bad power jack or a bad mainboard.

Question: Dell Inspiron 1545

My daughter has a Dell Inspiron that had Wireless Internet at one time. One night she shut it down and went to start it the next day and it can't find a Network. We have 2 other laptops and a desktop that can find it just fine. We have done System Restore, spent hours on the phone with the cable/internet provider and with the router company. It won't even troubleshoot. I saw a similiar question about an HP and you guys fixed it. However, this did not seem to pertain to the Dell.

I asked this question on PCTechByte, or something like that, and the only response was from someone being smart, asking how many times I dropped it out the window, etc... I am hoping you can help before we have a pretty pink Dell paperweight!

Question: Dell Inspiron 1545

Hi... Ok here's my problem that hopefully someone will know the answer to: I've got a dell Inspiron 1545, running windows 7. So I followed the instructions and it came up that the system couldn't fix the problem automatically and it was something to do with my iPhone that I needed to uninstall it on my computer, which I attempted to do but now I can't get it to even load up in order to uninstall it. I would be really greatfull if anybody can help. Many thanks

Question: Dell Inspiron 1545

Please help. I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 on it. Almost everytime I use it settings and things have been changed even though it stays locked in my office which is in my garage and noone but myself has a key. Also, I'm often redirected when online yet I've run McAfee, Advanced Systems Care 5 as well as Microsofts latest antimalware program and all that is ever found are cookies. I've attached a Hijackthis log in hopes that someone could help me with this. Please advise. Thank you.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545

Don't see anything alarming in the HiJackThis log.
I would attempt a test install with a new or borrowed hard drive, then making sure all Dell drivers are installed, and then run Windows update or Microsoft update a few times to be sure all updates are downloaded and installed.

Then if the problem remains the same, you ought to have a certified tech who knows Dell take a look at it. It it works properly with the test drive, you know what to do next.

I would start with tunning diagnostics on the hard drive by downloading the diagnostic tool for the hard drive brand and making a bootable disc.

My laptop screen has gone completely black. I opened my laptop to sign on and nothing. I can hear the computer starting up, but nothing ever comes up on the screen. What can I do to fix this? thanks!

Answer:Dell Laptop Inspiron 1545

I'm guessing what actually happened is the backlight in the display went out. So take a flashlight and kind of point it at the display, then look very closely at it to see if you can see the Windows screen there. It will be very faint, so take a few minutes.

If you that is the case, there's a chance that you can get away with just a new inverter board for the display, which would be great because it's cheap. Otherwise, you're looking at a new display panel.

I am trying to determine if the HDD on a coworker's Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop (Service Tag # BV223K1) is failing or if there is some other problem. It came with Windows 7 and was upgraded to Windows 10 last summer with no problems. Last week, my friend said it was taking a long time to boot up and some programs were running slow.

He asked if I could reformat it and reinstall Windows 10. I tried to use DBAN to completely zero out the drive before the installation. It ran OK for a while and then really slowed down, showing it would take 296 hour to complete at one time. It finally reported failure and stopped at about 2% completion.

The HDD is a 500GB WD SATA drive. I was hoping to run WD's diagnostics utilities, but found out that they are no longer available as an ISO file for burning a bootable CD. Only Windows and DOS versions are available.

Is there any other free diagnostic utility someone could recommend that does not require launching Windows or DOS in order to use it?

Yes, we know this is an old model computer. My friend would still like to have it running for his young son to watch DVDs and downloaded videos, without asking to borrow dad's new notebook. He is willing to replace the HDD if we are sure that will fix the problem.

Answer:Testing HDD on Dell Inspiron 1545

If you haven't already checked it, these are the original specs for that Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop:
Intel Pentium T4400 2.20 GHz dual core processor
3 GB(2 GB + 1 GB) DDR2 RAM
Dell WD-ML160 250 GB hard drive

It appears that it was upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit to Windows 10 Home 64-bit in September 2016.
It appears that the original hard drive was upgraded to a 500 GB one, but it's unknown if it was during that same period and if it was a new or used one.

Diagnosing a failing hard drive is beyond my knowledge, so I'll let someone else address that issue.
Good luck.

I'm really sorry if this is in the wrong section, I only just started on here. I've had my laptop for a few years, it's never really gave me much drama, but the other day it kept freezing after around 20 minutes, so I'd turn it off, start over and all was fine. I can't quite remember what happened, but I remember one time I noticed Chrome had messed up and deleted all my extensions, signed me out and changed my really cool theme which I was NOT happy about. I uninstalled Chrome and reinstalled, and it still didn't give my my extensions back, and was super slow letting me redownload them. I did a system restore thing, and that's when these problems started. Right now my laptop won't let me log in, it starts up fine but just before it gets to the bit where I choose the user, it goes black, and all I can see is the cursor. I've tried safe mode and it does the same, I've changed the battery too and I've tried startup repair. Please help, I will be SO eternally grateful.

Basically I'm 19, I live on my own, and whilst I know the basics about laptops I aren't at all genius' like the lot of you. I've tried to read through some of the posts and find it really difficult so if anyone knows the answer to my problem please try to pretend you're talking to an alien and give it in simple terms.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 that is about a month out of warranty so Dell won't help. It came up with an error about two weeks ago saying Time And Date Clock Stopped or something very similar. I took it to a local technician who changed the clock battery or something like that. It was a tiny circle thing. It worked for a couple hours and then went dead and wouldn't do anything at all. Wouldn't turn on or light up or anything. They then said they had forgot to attach the switch that goes under the keyboard that it needs to turn back on so I went back and he reattached the clip, but still it doesn't work.

My friends baby crawled on top of the laptop when the lid was down and hey presto it worked again! Then a few days later the same happened and it just won't turn on. Could something be loose? Or is it just dead? My local technician says it might be the motherboard? I don't understand why it would work after a baby had sat on it, surely it means something clicked in to place?

I put the charger in and I know it works but the light on the laptop that should come on to say its charging stays off.... Read more

I have had this computer for almost 3 years now and have had no problems with the hardware before. I went to start my laptop earlier this week and it keeps loading without coming to my screen where I enter my password to go onto my desktop. It returns to an error message after trying to load with no success. The message says:

Windows failed to start.A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
Insert windows installation disk and restart.

Then it asks me to choose a mode: Safe mode, etc.

What's wrong with it and why am I getting this message?

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

ok, so I know it's a long-shot that anyone out there has one, let alone has swapped out the RAM but I have an Inspiron 1545 (hey, it was cheap, wasnt even sure how much I'd use it), came with Win7x64 and 4gb RAM, my manual says 8gb max, nothing else does, everything else (crucial, dell upgrades, etc) says 4gb max.

Now, not sure I even really have a need for it but since I'll probably end up editing video from my camcorder on the laptop, maybe that would use it (plus, I figure GiMP probably likes as much RAM as it can get).

So, anyone know if it will take 8gb? I mean I suppose I could just order it and if it doesnt work, pay the restocking fee and return it. cant even imagine the desktop one could build these days.

(on a side note, we may be switching to Revit at work and if we do, I'm pushing for at least 12gb and quad core)

Hi everyone

I have various issues with a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop running Vista HP64Bit.

When you first turn it on, it beeps very fast and very loudly for a few seconds, so fast that you can?t count how many beeps there are.
After that it comes up with Windows Boot Manager and ask ?for an operating system to be selected to start or press F8 for an advanced choice?
Windows Vista is the only option that you can select, so you press return.
Then CHKDSK starts to run, but only for a few seconds and then automatically stops.
It says ?disk checking cannot continue?
After that it continues to boot into windows just fine and the laptop functions normally once you have logged in.
However it prompts you that the c: drive is corrupt and that a CHKDSK scan should be run.

I have tried to run it, but it says the drive cannot be scanned properly while in use.
?Do you wish to schedule a scan the next time windows starts? You say yes, you restart the machine but you get the same cycle. The beeps, the boot manager prompt and the failed chkdsk scan all before windows finally boots up ok.

So I opened a command prompt and typed chkdsk c: and I get all sorts of errors including ?segment ***** is in pardon? and something else like ?drive has damaged sectors," chkdsk cannot run in read only mode.

I have also tried to sfc/scannow command but that just reported more errors.

I have tried system restore, but that fails because it says the drive is corrupted.
I have run ... Read more

Your Hard drive could be failing. Download Drive Fitness and burn the ISO using Imgburn (how to burn and ISO image using Imgburn) burn at the lowest speed possible I recommend 4X. You would need to this with another pc if possible.

With the newly created CD boot with it making sure your CD-ROM drive is in the boot sequence, or press the button during your system name logo splash screen to bring up a boot menu then select your CD drive.

With Drive Fitness perform a short and long test. Let us know what the results are.

The next day I tried opening the laptop but all I can hear is my fan turning for a couple of seconds and then it would stop
Nothing showed up on my screen with or without the fan working

Answer:My dell 1545 Inspiron won't start up

Were there any bluescreens / system crashes? Does the system overheat?
Disconnect the adapter and battery and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to release any static power. Then try connecting with the adapter only / battery only.
Press and hold the fn key + power button to turn on the system and it should initiate the diagnostics - check for any possible beep codes.
Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info -
Download the service manual - - remove and reseat the memory modules / HDD and check if the system powers on.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.

This isn't a problem of mine, but rather a friend's who asked me for help. She has a Dell Inspiron 1545 and has had nothing but problems with it since day one. Last time, she had to get her keyboard replaced; prior to this I had done a fresh install of 7, thinking it would correct the issue, so when she sent it to get the repair shop, it had nothing on it. When she got it back, a free trial of Norton was installed, along with some other software not relation to the keyboard. I went ahead and uninstalled this crap and replaced it with the software of my choice, and sent my friend happily on her way.

Today, two weeks later, she calls me up reporting of a beeping BIOS - which was one of the symptoms she had before having the keyboard replaced. I believe it's also saying that Windows didn't shut down properly and is having her choose which way to start up every time, in addition to a lot of freezing and scrolling issues. She said she checked for viruses and spyware, but nothing was found.

Besides the computer just being a plain piece of crap (sorry, I have a hatred for Dells), could it be that it just can't handle Windows 7? It's protocol for every new computer to have the newest OS on it, is it not? I know when my boyfriend purchased his current PC, it was WAAAAAAY under the minimum specifications to run Vista, yet still had it installed.

Any other suggestions or ideas would be helpful. Thanks

Mod Edit:  Split from Hamluis.
I have a similar problem. My Dell Inspiron 1545, with Windows 7, during the boot up process, all I ever get is the option to either start normally or launch repair! Using F8 I can get various options, Start Normally, Safe Mode, Start from last known good configuration etc. Using these options (or the ones I understand) always brings me back to "start normally or launch repair". I have also tried CRTL+F11 at the Dell logo but nothing happens - apart from returning to "start normally etc. Where to now? If I can get a command prompt (and how to I do that), what command line would I type in to obtain the recovery/repair functions?
The computer was bought secondhand from ebay and did not come with any disks.

I was using my laptop fine today until my Powerpoint session froze. It would not allow be to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del to end the task so I pressed the on/off button down for 5 seconds to reset. However, since doing that, the laptop will no longer start up. When I press the on/off button, I can hear the fan go on, and the "on" symbol is illuminated. The Dell logo appears with the word "Inspiron" below and a progress bar. In the bottom right hand corner it says "F2 Setup and F12 Boot Options". If I press neither of these, the screen goes blank after about a second and the fan shuts down. Please could someone help. If I press "F12 Boot Options" I get the options "Internal HDD", "CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive", "Onboard NIC", "BIOS Setup" and "Diagnostics. I don't want to progress any further as I don't want to make it worse. Please could someone help!

Was gonna help a buddy fix his laptop, but I'm all out of ideas. It's a Dell Inspiron 1545. When it starts up, it shows the Dell Splash page with Boot Options and Setup.Afterwards, it loads up the Windows Error Recovery page, with the Launch Startup Repair and Launch Windows Normally options. When I try to Launch Windows Normally, it brings up the Windows loading screen with the progress bar, than eventually cuts out to a black screen. When I try to launch the repair, it cuts out to a black screen right after.I tried hitting F8 during startup, to get to the advanced boot options. Repair your computer cuts me out to a black screen after the windows loading page. When I try to start it in safe mode, after crcdisk.sys loads it freezes for like 30 seconds than restarts. (Idk if it's supposed to restart, but everything was still messed up after it restarted) Last known good config freezes after windows loads like most of the other stuff..I tried loading the Vista disk that came with the computer. Went into Boot Options and loaded the CD. The CD loading fine at first, but it ended in a command prompt, that I either didn't know what to do with or was useless. But. That's not what I'm used to reinstalling windows looking like. ><.At this point I'm just trying to erase everything and go back to factory settings, which I was gonna do with reinstalling Windows but I can't seem to get that to work. While trying all these options, the keys are e... I booted my computer with my XP SP1 disc and it didn't even pop up with the "Press any button to continue..." thing. I've checked everything in the BIOS. It's fine. CD/DVD rom is set to boot first.

I want XP SP1 on this machine. Help please! Thanks!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 Won't Let Me Reformat w/ XP

You're gonna haev problems right away if you're trying to use a SP1 disc. Slipstream SP3 on there with nLite, as well as the SATA drivers for the computer, otherwise it won't recognize the HDD and you'll have to disable ACHI in the BIOS.

May I ask, any particular reason you want to go from Vista to XP? If you don't like Vista, you can always run the Windows 7 RC for free until June 2010.

I have a friend who has a virus and needs to reinstall Win7. Not sure he made a "recovery" disk.

If not.........?

Answer:Reinstall Win 7 on Dell Inspiron 1545

If your system’s hard drive is never formatted before and if your system has a “DELL factory Image”, then you can follow the below mentioned URL which will help you in restoring your system to factory settings without OS discs:

Using Dell Factory Image Restore permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any programs or drivers installed after you received your computer. If possible, back up the data before using this option.

Hope this helps.

Make & Model : Dell Inspiron 1545

Problem : Unit does not charge reliably. Green LED on transformer unit does
not light up each time it connected to mains and laptop.

The green light flashes on and off on the charger when connected to the mains and laptop.

When the cable is plugged onto the ac adapter, the green light should always come on, regardless whether it is plugged onto the laptop or not.

The fact that the green light does not come on without it being plugged onto the laptop, tells me that the charger has gone and needs to be replaced!

I took out the battery and left the ac adapter plugged in, but it still would not power on, so I know that the problem is not with the battery because the laptop would have started to work!

I also took out the battery and left it without the ac adapter plugged in, pressed and held the power button down for 20 seconds, so the RAM gets cleared to perform a hardware reset, but that did not work either and it still did not power up, so I am also assuming that the system board or motherboard needs to be replaced!

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 and I've had it since May, last year. Its been sent off back to Dell once for a hardrive replacment.

I've rang dell up and they made me run a test whilst I was on the phone to them. They told me by the results of the test that the problem was a software issue and not a hardware issue. Having found this out they put me through to the software department and they told me they were going to charge me something like 50 for them to fix it for me over the phone. Before I pay this I thought I'd post on here and see if you guys can fix it first.

Basically, when I turn my lap top on it comes to the screen where it says "Start windows normally" "Start in Safe mode" ect ect... When I click any of them, it just restarts my laptop and comes back to that very same screen. I have no recovery discs or anything like that.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 not loading up

Dell computers ship with a hidden recovery partition that will let you return the notebook back to factory default. You access the recovery partition by pressing CTRL-F11 as the BIOS tests start up. In my experience, the timing is a little critical, so you may have to try this several times.

The restore will reformat the hard drive, so you will loose all your data unless it's backed up.

I'd appreciate any help with this please!
I have a dell 1545 laptop. Earlier today hubby turned it on and it said there was a virus and it was shutting down, and now I can't get it to do anything! When I turn it on the dell sign comes up with the F2 and F12 options but then it does nothing. I've tried running the system tests but it keeps getting stuck on the 'confidence test'. Any ideas please?

Answer:Dell inspiron 1545 won't boot, please help!

F2 anf F5 option may mean it is not booting from the proper drive.
maybe try the Bios and see if it is booting from CD drive or floppy drive.
If it says floppy disable it and make it start with CD.
At least I think it should be CD maybe someone can confirm or not.
Even though it does not have a floppy drive working on it sometimes it is marked as enabled in the Bios.

Hello, I don't know if I am in the right place but if someone could help me, I'd really appreciate it. I have the Dell Inspiron in the title and after I turn it on, it will run for a few minutes then freeze (like it's thinking) and I am no longer able to do anything. It does work in safe mode but obviously I can't continue there. I don't know if it has a virus but I do have AVG but when I run a full scan, it never completes in regular or safe mode. Does anyone have any ideas as to why I can't use the regular mode for more than a few minutes. Thanks, Debbie

Answer:Re: Dell Inspiron 1545 freezing

When in safe mode, go to start / run / and type in msconfig. Once that opens, go to your start up tab and uncheck all of it. Now reboot and try normal mode. If it works and you don't freeze up, go back into msconfig and re-enable two items at a time until the issue happens again. Trial and error.

All right, so one day, my laptop was on, and I wanted to turn it off. I didn't feel like going to Start > Shut Down and waiting for everything to close, so I just held down the power button until it shut off. Just put that in here in case it's important.

Now, when I turn it on, it goes to the 'Windows has failed to start' screen. It gives me two options - 'Launch Startup Repair' and 'Start Windows Normally'.

If I try to launch Startup Repair, the screen turns black for a second and goes back to the 'Windows has failed to start' screen.
If I start Windows normally, it tries to boot and just ends up getting the 'Windows has failed to start' screen again.
If I try putting in a Windows 7 installation disk, the screen just flashes black and goes back to the 'Windows has failed to start' screen.

And if I press F8 as it starts, I get a screen that says 'Choose an operating system or tool.' I can only pick Windows 7, or Windows Memory Diagnostic. The diagnostic tool does a scan, but nothing comes up after it.

The screen also says 'To specify an advanced option for this choice, press F8.' However, that does nothing.

So, any ideas on how to fix this?

I've managed to get to the screen where I can choose to boot in Safe Mode or the last known good configuration. Problem is, when I try to boot in safe mode, I get a blue screen and then it restarts. Last known good configuration doesn't work, either.

But I can also get into the BIOS now, so maybe I can use that ... Read more

My kids both have Dell Inspiron 1545?s.

One of them started blue screening. I?ve reloaded windows 7 home premium from the recovery discs more times than I can care to mention.

The laptop specs are basically a stock Inspiron 1545, Intel Dual Core 2.3Ghz, 4GB RAM, 250MB hard drive.

I?ve exchanged RAM, tried a new hard drive and swapped in a new motherboard. After the MB swap, the problem got somewhat better but it is still there. I did use some thermal paste when I reset the heat sink in the mb swap.

So here is where I am at:

> New motherboard (all other internals were reused - CPU, heat sink, WAN card, keyboard, DVD drive, Express card, LCD panel)
> 2GB RAM ( this module is verified working in another computer)
> New hard drive
> Fresh Windows 7 Home Premium install

The computer usually will boot up into Windows. Basically the behavior has not changed noticeably since I've installed the MB, RAM, fresh OS, etc. After some arbitrary period of time or some basic activity, it will blue screen to this:

> A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
> The system encountered an uncorrectable hardware error
> If this is the first time you?ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
> Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask our hardware or software manufacture... Read more

I am having problems with the battery charging on a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
I bought this computer which had a charging issue. It only works on mains power the battery is not charging.
It was thought that the Charging jack board was faulty. This has now been replaced.
I am still having problems.
The mains adapter that came with the laptop was not original Dell.
I have replaced the adapter with an original Dell PA21. The end lead that plugs into the jack has a hexagonal end.
Does anyone know if this is the correct type for this model? Or should I have a round end type? Or does it make no difference?
I can only conclude that the problem lies in the adapter and/or the Dell battery that I think could be dead and may need replacing.
Thanks very much.

Answer:Dell inspiron 1545 charging adapter

Some systems were built with hexagonal connectors - if yours has one at the computer end, the adapter should fit it. If not, you need the round connector.
That said, if the AC adapter isn't recognized and you've already tried a new adapter and a new DC jack board, the problem is with the mainboard, not the battery.

OK so I have tried deleting the touchpad in device manager and removing the driver, and reinstalling the device from scratch. When this didn't work I thought there must be a problem with the touchpad itself and so bought a new one and installed it. Problem is it still doesn't work.
If I go into device manager and look for it I have to show hidden devices and then it comes up with the yellow triangle next to it.
I show properties on it and it says its the Dell Touchpad, Manufacturer is Alps Electronics, and its plugged into the PS/2 mouse port.
In the Device Status box it says:
This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)
The Driver date is 02/05/2010 and the version is 7.1107.115.102
I have also noticed that on the details tab under power data the current power state is D3, which I believe is off.
Something else I have noticed which may or may not be related is that the laptop doesn't enter sleep mode when the lid is closed, altho it is set to and will enter sleep if I select it in the shutdown options.
I am at a complete loss as to why the touchpad isn't working so any help would be appreciated.

I had a laptop brought to me and I diagnosed it as a bad hard drive. The owner has bought two replacements, one from Amazon and one from Newegg. Both of these replacements slide in, but they do not connect to the ports at all. The original hard drive firmly slides and and you can feel it slide into place. The two replacements I have tried are both Toshiba brand.

Both the original hard drive and the new hard drives look identical, but the original seems to be thicker by a fraction of an inch.

The model # on the laptop is PP41L. I've tried the Dell website by typing in the service tag. They have every replacement part under the sun except for the hard drive for this model.

I worked on a similar laptop a few years ago and was able to buy the replacement directly from Dell. Same model as the one I am working on now.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 Hard Drive

You need to pay attention to the drive thickness. Newer laptops use 9.5mm thick drives while older used 12.5mm thick drives. You need to check the thickness under the drive specifications when ordering a drive. I believe all current shipping models of 2.5 inch drives are 9.5mm but can't say that for sure. My guess is that the drives the owner bought were bargain drives that were being sold inexpensively because they were older drives.

The 9.5mm drives I've purchased actually came with a spacer so they could be used for laptop's requiring a 12.5mm. No clean way to adapt a 12.5mm drive for a laptop that is designed for a 9.5mm.

I ran spybot--and it found 21 problems but said that I was not the administrator of my own computer so i could not get rid of viruses and malware (How do I make sure I am the administrator--I know I set it up that way?) Also when i plug directly into cable without wireless it works great and my ipod works with the router so I know it's not broken. any help is appreciated thanks -chris

Hi Thanks for reply. My friends Inspiron 1545 came pre-loaded with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. He bought the activation key from Sofoway in Banbury. They sent a link to Microsoft to download Windows 7 Pro 64 bit., which I did for him, as he’s not computer literate. I clean installed Windows7 Pro and then did the free upgrade to Windows10 Pro 64 bit. His computer was running fine. He came to pick it up from my place. I showed him it running Windows 10 and he was happy. Then about ten days later he called me and told me that he’s installed his mcAfee unlimited Internet Security, which he’d purchased from PcWorld. He got the activation key card, went home and went on McAfee, downloaded the software and so he tells me, after it activated, he got a message from McAfee telling him all his drivers were either out of date or weren’t installed. He called them and they passed him to some company on the phone that he doesn’t remember the name of and they offered to update and install any missing drivers for 80 pounds sterling and they requested him to activate Remote Assistant, which he did so they could take over his laptop and configure the drivers and missing drivers. He gave them his, either Debit card, or Credit card details and they took the 80 pounds from his bank account. He tells me that his laptop is running fine now, but it was running fine when I did the Windows 7 installation and the Windows 10 free upgrade, so I don’t understand why his l... Read more

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 Windows 10 Pro 64 bit upgrade

Any chance the 32 bit vs 64 bit was involved when McAfee was installed?  Maybe McAfee was for Windows 7 and not 10.
I have a 1545 which seems to run Win 10 fine, although I had previously replaced the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card.
Have your friend check the Event Viewer and go through the logs.  Something may be there which would help lead to solving some problem.  Keeping track of what time something happens would help in finding entries in Event Viewer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I am getting frequent Blue Screen Memory Crash Dumps several times a day. Recently, I replaced the 3GB RAM with different brands of two 2GB DDR2 RAM sticks. The laptop seemed to do just fine. A few weeks after the replacement RAM was installed, the laptop screen was slammed down in a fit of rage by someone, and it ruined the 250GB HDD and the Integrated Webcam. I replaced the HDD with a 320GB HDD but I didn't replace or disconnect the non-working Webcam. I performed a Factory Restore with backup CDs that "The Geek Squad" set up for me after I bought the laptop. Then I started noticing that the NT Kernel & System process was starting to take up 50-56% of my CPU. After a few minutes of that, I would get the Blue Screen with "Dumping Physical Memory" and a reboot. It crashes when the computer even if the computer is idle. A week before today, I started getting more crashes each day. Today (4/7) I believe it has crashed atleast three times. I know it isn't good for the computer but when I've noticed the NT Kernel & System starting to hog the CPU, I would just hold the power button to turn it off (selecting Shut Down would not work as it would just freeze at the "Shutting Down..." screen. Last night I tried inserting the RAM into opposite slots, and tried using each 2GB stick by itself in each slot just to see if it made a difference, and it didn't. And unfortunately, I've been having bad luck finding the stock RAM I had r... Read more

Tried booting computer yesterday, would keep rebooting itself.
Tried going on safe mode, would get blank windows screen and that's it.
Ran startup hard drive test got this error:
Error code: 2000-0146.
Indicated that the hard drive had failed.
Removed hard drive and put it back in to see if that was the problem.
That didn't work so tried using the burned repair disk when first getting computer.
(Windows 7, 64 bit)
Got the windows safe mode screen again only this time with this error
Error 0x4001100200001012
Googled it and it says that the high speed of the disk makes it unreadable.
Returned a new repair disk to see if that works, but got same result.
What should I do now going forward or is my laptop essentially trash?

Hello there my wife Dell Inspiron 1545 w/ Windows 7, laptop just stopped connecting to the internet. Last Sunday it was working fine then the following Monday she could not connect to the internet. I had tried all that I could think of and even call Belkin for help. Nothing was wrong with the router so they couldn't help me with the problem. I did a troubleshoot and the laptop gives the following problem. [The Diagnostics Policy Service is not running.] I have no idea in what that is and is hoping that someone can tell me. It do says that it have "Limited connection." Would appreciate it if someone could help to our problem.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 won't connect to Internet

Be sure to test your connection with another computer first, to rule out cable modem and other hard ware issues.
The Inspiron 1545 does not have a bad record of failure with the ethernet port... but this one could be gone, and might be difficult to fix at your desk without the ability to connect.
You might want to go to the Dell site with another computer and download and save all the driver updates for that Dell Product ID, download and reinstall them via a usb drive or CD... as a early test.
If the Dell is still under warranty, Dell will send somebody to your home or shop for diagnostics... otherwise, you can short cut wasted time by finding a qualified or experienced tech to run a few tests.
Ethernet ports do burn out, randomly, on a number of system boards, though the expected failure rate is very low. We have never seen a failure on the 1545's we see in our shops. Yours may be a goner that only a motherboard repair or replacement will fix...
Good luck. Please let us know the final diagnosis and fix.

I've had my Inspiron since the past 5-6 years and have never had any problems with it, but since it has started to become a bit slow so I was hoping to do a reinstall.
The issue I am having is that I donot have any of the CDs or original media that it originally came with. I know that my other HP laptop (that came preinstalled with Windows 10) does not require external media for a reinstall, but since my Dell is so old, I am not so sure about it. Also I am currently running Windows 10 (free upgrade) but it came preinstalled with Windows 7.
How do I go about reinstalling Windows with a CD? Any help will be appreciated!

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Have you tried connecting your laptop to different Wi-Fi networks and still can't connect?

Might be worth to update your laptop's Wi-Fi ethernet driver to the current one from Dell's support site.

Okay, so i have had my inspiron 1545 for 4 months now, and have had a problem where the "Battery is plugged in, not charging", I have read from a lot of places that, my adapter has probably gone bad, and can buy a new one at the Dell store. Only... When i go to my local library, my battery charges. Which is really weird. I have computers and game consoles and TV's plugged in at my house, and they all work fine. But my laptop wont charge. Is it just an odd coincidence? Or should i look into buying a new Dell Adapter?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1545 AC Adapter Problem

Don't waste your time on replacing the adapter. Dell laptops have a problem with their motherboards. The chip which recognizes the adapter dies and the adapter will be refused to be recognized by the unit, causing charging to stop. Once in a blue moon, it will allow a charge, but what good is that? Dell refuses to acknowledge this problem so I am not buying anymore Dell products until they offer a recall and replace the defective motherboards for free, whether under warranty or not.

And on top of all that what every time i go to a site it say "server can not be found" until i reload the page

I guess you installed XP on it? You can find the XP drivers by going to the Dell support site, enter your Service Tag Number and download the drivers. Be sure to use IE and do not use the Dell Download Manager!

Just download the driver file, save it to the desktop and double click to install

On the list of drivers, click on the driver file:

Then the download button here:

See this for the order they should be installed:

Depending 0on how you installed XP, you may be able to recover the Vista installation . . If you have the Dell System restore ( not all Dells do ) you can use that and you will not need a install CD

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit installed. Now after a windows update, whenever I try to boot, it goes through the Dell logo then I get a black screen with this in the top left corner "Error!_" I tried to see if it was the harddrive by using F12 to boot linux from a flash drive, but I get the exact same screen. I feel like the problem may be with the pre-boot environment but I am not sure and don't know how to fix it. Also, I have run a test through the BIOS and came up with no errors. Any help is appreciated .

My dell laptop is having some issues. It was overheating and I cleaned out the heatsink and around the vents but it continued to overheat so I disassembled the laptop to get to the cooling fan and it was full of dust so I cleaned it out and reassembled the laptop. I made sure everything was hooked back up just like it was. Now if I try to power it on using only the battery the front light lights up for about 2 seconds and the fan kicks on but it immediately shuts off. If I plug in the charger it continuously lights up and the fan runs and in 2 seconds shuts off but then immediately lights up and the fan starts again and then shuts off. It is caught in this loop. I have tried everything that I could think of including removing everything and holding the power button down for 30 seconds. Now I am stumped and was hoping that someone out there knows exactly what is going on. Thank you in advance.

When the laptop is plugged in, it does not charge the battery. The battery is new so surely the battery is not the issue. Unfortunately, the battery is at 1% now so when the adaptor is taken out, the laptop immediately shuts off. I have tried these steps to no avail:

- Shut Windows down
- remove ac adpater plug from computer
- remove battery
- Now hold down the power button on the laptop for 30 seconds
- Put the battery back in
- Plug the ac adapter back in
- Turn on computer

So I was wondering if anyone could help me eliminate some possibilities as to why it is not charging before i take it into the repair shop or purchase an external battery charger or turn it into a desktop. Thank you.

Im am hoping someone can help me. My daughter has a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop and for some unknown reason, it will not load windows. She is using windows7 and was given no installation disc whan she bought it.
When switched on, the laptop goes to boot up as normal and says "starting windows" then it goes to a screen which says the following
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

If windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup repair can help diganose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose start windows normally.

Start windows normally

I have tried both options and it continually loops back to this page.

I have also tried using the F12 and tried installing using all of the available options.
The only way i can get it to load is to hit F12 key, then select "onboard NIC" then press F8 and get the advanced boot options.

I have tried selecting all three safe mode options but it goes back to the loading windows loop. I select "disable driver signature enforcement" and it loads.
It says "starting windows" and goes through the normal boot up procedure.
When selecting the user names etc, the desktop will sometimes load but then the laptop crashes.

Hi Andymac7. Welcome to TSF!

Do you perhaps have a small, tactical nuclear device you could attach to the computer? Just kidding.

In all seriousness, is there anything you did JUST BEFORE this started happening? Did you make any hardware or software changes to her system?

I would recommend running the Driver Verifier if you can get the system to boot up again. It sounds like you're able to but you have to jump through some hoops to do so. Read THIS POST and see if you can make it happen. Let me know how you fare.

Good day!

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 and when I it on it goes to the 'Windows has failed to start' screen.

And if I press F8 as it starts, it goes to the screen where I can choose to boot in Safe Mode or the last known good configuration. Problem is, when I try to boot in safe mode, I get a blue screen and then it restarts. Last known good configuration doesn't work, either.
So, any ideas on how to fix this?
My laptop is just over a year old and shouldn't be doing this, please help as it is very important to me.

If the laptop is still under warranty, I would talk to Dell.

Otherwise I would run diagnostics on the hard drive

If the drive checks out ok, Probably worth testing your memory . . click on the link to Memtest in my signature . . let it run on one stick at a time overnite or until it starts reporting errors

I was trying to help a friend that had the Total Security Malware yesterday. After running Malwarebytes and getting rid of it, I decided to do some cleaning and updates on his laptop.

Everything was going smoothly until it was time to restart after the SP2 update. At first (before shutdown) it began to install some components, it restarted and began install some other updates, later the SP2 update began but after about 30 minutes, the counter was still at 0%.

Of course, I got a little miffed and worried at the same time so, my first reaction was to shut down and restart to see if it would pick the update up again... it failed 3 more times at the same spot (0%) even when I tried to go to Safe Mode.

Finally I was able to get into safe mode and I tried to use a Restore Point to no avail. Much to my dismay it said that I had no restore points to use (I thought windows created restore points before doing updates???). One thing I noticed though, while on the desktop, it said I was using SP2, which btw, it striked me as odd since it never finalized.

So I tried shutting down one more time and restarting normally, this time, I was able to get to the LOGIN screen so I thought I was now safe but, so far , almost 45 minutes later the screen is at the WELCOME and the little circle is hovering or circling around but it doesn't get to the desktop.

My friend told me to go ahead and re do the whole thing but I am afraid that even if I do that, I am going to get to the point of I am goin... Read more

You should first make sure you have all the Windows updates for your system installed.
1. Change the channel in the router.
2. Take the router defaults and make ONE change. Use WPA security.

My dell inspiron 1545 wont boot up. It will only show me the dell logo with the options of pressing F2 and F12 then it goes on black. Then the same messeage appears:

"The AC power adapter wattage and typecannot be determinded.
The battery may notcharge.
The system will adjust the performance to match the power available.

Please connect a dell 65W AC adapter r greater fr best system performance.

To resolve this issue, try to reseat the power adapter.

Strike the F3 key (before the F1 or F2 key) if you do not want to see power warning messages again.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility
Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics."

And when I press F1, to continue, it sometimes shows me this message:

BOOTMGR image is corrupt. The system cannot boot.

Most of the time it goes black, sometimes with a blingking under dash "_". And sometimes it gives me severak white stripes, either 1, or 3 accros the screen.

Just recently it gave me this message:

Window boot manage
Windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. to fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disc and resart your computer.
2. Choose your language setings, and then click "next"
3. Click "repair computer"

If you do not have this disc, contact your system admininstratr or computer manufacturer for assistance.
