[SOLVED] Hi Everyone, I need 'permission' to see my pics

Question: [SOLVED] Hi Everyone, I need 'permission' to see my pics

Hi Everyone,

This forum seems like an absolute wealth of knowledge, and about now I have just the right amount of vacuum between my ears to need it...!

I just now came across this forum and signed up, but I'm overwhelmed with the options and don''t know where I should even post my question (if you haven't guessed, I'm pretty much computer ILLiterate!) and I'm hoping you can point me to the right forum.

I know I'm not supposed to ask questions here, I'm just lost and hoping that by explaining a bit of my problem, someone can tell me which forum I should post in.

My situation is that I had a new (larger) hard drive installed in my laptop, (and a whole bunch of other work done to it, it's not the same any more, much better), and I have the old hard drive in a little case that plugs into a USB port so I can still use it.

The problem comes in when I try to access a lot of my photos on the old drive, it says something to the effect that I don't have the correct permission to access that file, I have to be (actually, myself) but the old drive doesn't recognize me anymore).

How do I get the old drive to recognize me on the "new" laptop so I can get access to my pics?

Can anyone please point me to the right forum to ask this?

Thank you very much, I REALLY appreciate your time and help!

Preferred Solution: [SOLVED] Hi Everyone, I need 'permission' to see my pics

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Gday folks, hope you are all keeping well. I recently upgraded from XP to Win 7 . In XP my pics were all visible as pics but in Win 7 they are just numbers , so if I need a particular one I have to open each one till I find the pic I require. This is very frustrating and time consuming. Is there a way to change the numbers back to pics????? I am not a computer expert so please be gentle with this old guy, and take me thru step by step , then I may get it right LMAO.

when in email i get red x instead of pics using win xp, yahoo and internet explorer

Answer:Solved: red x instead of pics

The red x usually means that the address of the picture is unavailable or cannot be connected to from your location.

It could be a fault with the method in which the email was sent. Right click on the red x and select properties? What is the address?

Is this occuring with all images, or just some?

If it is a "local" file on someone's computer -- you cannot reach it from where you are at -- it has to be a web based address, and you have to be connected at the time to see it.

Answer:Solved: pics from cd/to / dvd

Are you talking about plain graphic files like JPG or GIF? If so, just treat them as data files. Read the CD files into a folder on your hard disk, and burn them as data to the DVD.

a couple days ago, while doing my usual browsing for pics, i saved some pics to my usual picture folder and noticed the pics weren't there or anywhere on my hard drive. i tried saving the pics to my desktop, documents, an external hard drive, etc... and the pics are nowhere to be found. i did a complete computer search and the pics are nowhere to be found. now to add to that drama i open mozilla firefox and my yahoo toolbar is gone but google toolbar is still there, i click view and yahoo and another toolbar aren't even listed. an even bigger problem is idm (internet download manager) is no longer viewed when i right click.... actually when i right click several things are missing. the only things i see when i right click with firefox open is view image, copy image, properties and a couple of others----several things are missing including download with internet download manager, and several firefox extension programs. this hurts can anyone help? thanks, the only thing i've changed lately is after running no virus program for the past 5 months i decided to download avg free, i ran a scan and it caught a few things and cleaned them, then websites were moving slow, lots of hesitating, so i decided to uninstall avg free, i actually had avg free a few months ago but it kept making websites move slow and a bunch of false warnings so i deleted it. Win 7 Home Premium X64

I am using a version of Quicken I have used for years, including on this machine.

Today it tells me :

"The item referred to by this shortcut cannot be accessed.
You may not have the appropriate permissions."

The icon picture is missing, on the desktop and the task bar, just a generic box showing,

This is in a window with "Explorer.exe" in the upper left corner.

This is while I am signed on as Administrator with no password.
I have used it like this for at least a month with no issue.

This machine has one other STANDARD user, with a password, and I can get in that way.

I tried to say Run as Administrator and got the same result.

How did I lose permission to use the same program I used yesterday?

Answer:[SOLVED] Need Permission?

I created a new shortcut that seems to have fixed the problem .

I need to crop/edit and change the color of part of several jpg and tif images. (i.e. change the color of equipment, or eliminate the background behind equipment.) These pics will then be inserted into a MS Publisher Doc.

What software ap should I/ can I use? I have Publisher, Word and MS Photo Editor available to me. A free Ap would be best since it needs doing very soon and we are short on funds. Thanks!

Answer:Solved: Editing jpg and tif pics

Boy, I don't know. I wouldn't use any of those.

You're looking for something like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro (what I use). I think both of those probably have a trial version that you can use for long enough to get the job done. And, if you like 'em, you can start budgeting to get a license. Photoshop is an Adobe product; Paint Shop Pro is a Jasc Software product. Check those companies' sites for more info about trial downloads.

Somebody in the Imaging forum might know more, but don't double-post...a mod might move this thread if you ask.

Have looked at the other postings about Windows 7 and "You need permission" - this one seems new. I have a laptop and a desktop both running Windows 7, both part of HOMEGROUP.

The desktop has two hard drives (C and D), both shared with full access to EVERYONE.
I can see both but can only update the D drive on the desktop from the laptop. When I try any update (new folder, copy a new file in, etc.) to the C drive, I get the "You need permission" error.

Have tried turning off sharing then turning back on for the C drive and have compared the sharing between C and D - they appear identical. Snipit of C drive permission attached. Any thoughts or ideas on what else to try would be appreciated.

Answer:You need permission - happening on networked drive that has permission

Rather than sharing form the root of the C: drive you should be sharing from the C:>Users folder instead. This is the default setting for Windows and there are many good reasons for this.

For networked drives that were created under a different User name you would also need to allow for sharing using the "Security" tab of the C: drive. The link below shows you how.

You can also set this drive share up at the C:>Users location if desired.

Hi, I have run into a problem in Windows 7 and can't seem to find a way around it, can anyone help?

I need to become the REAL administrator to fix another problem I'm having with a PC game.
From what I've heard there is a hidden administrator with power over everything, if I could just gain access to this account I could sort everything out. I have waded through hundreds of websites looking for an answer to my problem.
I can't change any of the account permissions through the control panel due to the lack of permissions!
I have also heard I can activate the administrator account through the "Command Prompt", In order to do this I am supposed to right click > run as administrator but once again I am en-counted with the same message reading "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"
It seems there is no way around this but then again I am a beginner at this sort of thing.

Please help!

Many thanks

Which version of Windows 7 do you have? (eg) X86 (32bit) or 64 bit?
If you have X86 Windows and you are downloading 64 bit programs this will not work and give you that error.
When you download the file, change the default save location. If you are trying to run this program from the Temp folder, it would give you that error also. Save the file to your desktop or your downloads folder and then try and run it.

So we don't assume too much, what do you mean by "sees the desktop"?

I just downloaded a trainer for a game and when I try to run it, my AVG says there is a trojan in it, and I think it locked the file. I would like to run the trainer anyway, but when I double click, I get a "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item" pop up. I am on my admin account- I only have one account on my XP(SP3),so it must be an admin account right? Well, is there a way I can run the trainer without Windows blocking me? Hope someone here can help out.

Answer:[SOLVED] Need help with file permission

Your profile account is listed as admin, yes, but it's not really the TRUE Admin account. The real one is hidden in the bowels of XP. Go HERE to read more about how to activate the administrator account. You could also try right-clicking on the icon, select "run as" and then select the administrator account on the screen that pops up. I'm assuming you set up an admin password when you installed XP. If not, it might not have one and you can just try pressing ENTER and not insert a password.

Let me know how that works for you.

Bought a second hand PC, the main ssd with the os had went. I received this strange screen with weird symbols. Via much trial and error I managed to get passed it to install a fresh copy of Win7 onto a second ssd.

Once up and running it ran fine, played many hours of games no problems. Multiple boot cycles, etc.

The other day I unplugged everything to move it to a different table 5 feet away. Upon reconnecting everything, I am now receiving the same screen with weird symbols. [picture below]

I've attempted to to a fresh install of windows, but the win7 installer refuses to install to either of the drives it detects in setup. Error: "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition"

Some googling later suggested it might be marvell storage controller issues, I disabled that in bios to no avail. Some suggested its a video card error, I swapped out to a different video card, also to no avail. (Exact same symbols appeared) I've tried plugging in the hdd's in different ports, one at a time, etc. Also, to no avail.

PC Specs:

Since it's second hand, (and currently can't boot), not sure whats all in there. I'll attach a pic of the inside, (note: the gtx 460 is the second video card I swapped in to see if it would change anything. The original video card was a evega gtx 580)

Hoping someone can help, thanks.

The strange thing is I just returned from visiting my daughter and burned pics for her fom MY laptop, with no problems, however we used CD-RW instead of CD-Rs, which I am using. Previously, a month ago or so, I had no problems burning to a CD-R but now I am having problems. Do I need to change something on my lap top to be able to burn to a CD-R, I have been having big problems with a photo/scanner I recently purchased and may have changed something I should not have.

Can you please help?

Hi, I have windows 98 se (if that helps?) I have loads of piccies (jpeg) saved under my documents which I have always viewed in just a normal window.... but for some reason they have all changed to quicktime pictures which can only be viewed on the quicktime picture viewer. The problem is that some of the pics just come out blank, or have breaks in them or stripes.
Are my pictures ruined or is there any way of reverting back to veiwing them in a normal window and not quicktime picture veiwer????
I am totally stumped as to why this has happened, one minute I was viewing them normally, then I saved a piccie off the internet... went to my documents to view it, and quicktime picture viewer came up. When I then checked all the rest of my jpegs... they had all changed to picture viewer.
Please help as I am so gutted at losing some of these piccies
Thanx, caz & rach.

I have a Dell Vostro 1510 running win xp, it is about 2 years old and now during startup, during the windows loading screen, I get this terrifying screen (image in the attachment). This looks worse than the blue screen of death, although I can still use it in safe mode and I can occasionally start windows normally and use it for a bit, but then this happens again eventually.

I'm not very good and diagnosing and fixing pc problems, does anyone know if a reformat/reinstall will fix the problem, or is it more serious than that?

Thanks for any replies!

This is super trivial but it's driving me crazy.

Got a new laptop yesterday, with Win 8.1, the same OS as my PC. Set it all up looking really nice, then noticed the desktop slideshow pics have altered to match on my PC as well. I don't want this, I want different pics on them. I'm using the laptop for work and I don't want loads of family snaps on there, they're personal.

I am logged into the same Microsoft account on both so I can share OneDrive and apps etc. I'd rather not create a whole new account!

Ok, here is the thing and hopefully somebody can help and this is relatively easy to do You know when you go to weddings and they have a video of pics from little on with music in the background?? Is that easy to do, and if so, what type of software do you need or other equipment. I have a scanner for the old pics (although I have never used it yet. lol) , a digital camera, cd and dvd burner on my computer, etc. What I want to do is make one for my mom and put it on a dvd for xmas. If it's alot of work, for her birthday in April, which will give me TONS of time to find old pics I want to use. I know they have software programs for this, I have seen one, but can you copy them to a dvd to watch on TV?? Also, are there any "FREE" software for this you can download? If not, can you let me know what to look for as I can watch for them to go on sale?? I appreciate any help. I just have NO idea what to get a mom who has everything and need nothing. My daddy died 2 years ago,and I thought one with her favorite songs and lots of pics of our family would be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks a bunch.

I have experimented with this all day and don't know if it even matters. I can understand that if a pic is altered yet remains the same size it can change it's KB but if I take the same pic and just save it a few times under a different name ie: horse1 horse 2 etc without changing a thing the KB are sometimes very different though the size remains the same 500px X 400px.
The reason I care is because I wonder if this slows down the loading when someone goes to my site if they are not on broadband and if it means that I use up my space on my site.

When I backed up all of my pictures and then restored them all on a new computer the permissions set got messed up. The user account name was the same but the name in the permission list is "unknown user".

I can right click on an individual picture, go to properties, then security and add "Everyone" as a user and give it full permission. But that takes time and I have thousands of pictures.

Is there a way to change the permission on groups of them, rather than just one at a time?

Hi there...

I've recently moved my Outlook folders from one machine to another, exporting the Personal Folder File and then importing it. All worked fine.

But now, when I try and make a sub-folder in my folders list, it refuses. The New Folder option is available when I right click the INBOX folder, but not if I right click any of the sub-folders there-under.

Similarly, it won't let me copy items from one folder to another. Says I don't have permission and that I should right-click the folder and click properties to check permission for the folder. But I can't find anything like that under properties.

It suggests I see the "folder owner or your administrator to change your permissions" but I am both of the above!

I hope someone out there can help me.

Many thanks

I have been struggling with this for a month and reading every internet search refference to "you may not have permission.."
so I had done all the suggestions
enable NetBios
disable simple file sharing on XP pro
All using same workgroup name
All with shared folders available.
I did not disable the firewall in SP2

After much effort and time wasted I have solved my XP pro workgroup problem so I have to get this out there. May not be the solution for everyone but seems a lot of people have done all the suggestions and are struggling with this quirk.

I first had discovered that although XP pro would not allow access through the workgroup,
(error: ...not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource ...) I could access the various workgroup computers by entering their IP in the address bar of a folder on XP pro. ie
\\ or whtever had been asigned by the router.

but the computer "\\name" would not work in the address bar. Even if I could call up the workgroup (sometimes possible), clicking on the computer name would not allow access.

I could not understand why XPpro would see the computer but not recognize its name as a valid workgroup computer.

Two of the four have the correct permissions to modify files on the main computer but cannot. The permissions seem to be correct. One of the four does not have permission to modify files on the main computer but can modify files. I can't seem to figure out these two issues. i don't see anything wrong with your stats. routers should be named with the ip, but i don't think that's an issue at this point.

since you're hardwired in it doesn't sound like anything with your router or your internet, or your computer.

actually... wait... i missed this. you need to enable your dhcp lease. if needed you should set it up with a manual address making sure you're not taking up someone else's ip address. if that's an issue with your router (which it could be) you may need to change your router settings so it automatically gives ip ad's to computers via dhcp. if everything is enabled and all your settings are correct you may need to just reboot your router, and then when all connections are active, reboot all your computers.

if that's not it, it's probably a vista bug. i've heard about so many people having problems with vista there's a good chance of that.
that would require a repair with the vista boot discs, or a full reinstall. (hoprefully you won't have to go quite that far, since it's a pain in the *you know what*).

I have a fairly old system (Athlon 64 3300+ 2.4GHz). I had two hard drives one consisting of my c: drive that was 160GB. The second is 320GB partitioned into a D: and E: drive. Running Windows 7 Ultimate (on C: drive)

My C: drive recently failed and I had to replace it. I decided to try an SSD drive ( Kingston V-Series 64GB) installed new drive with Windows 7 without any problems (very nice improvement in performance BTW). By Bios recognizes the now c: drive as the primary boot disk, as well as the d:/e: drives. I am able to access the d: and e: drive without any issues.

The problem I am having is when I try and save a file to these drives (d or e) I receive a message saying I do not have permission to save to this drive (neither d: or e) . I am able to save the file to my C: drive and then copy it over to d: or e:, but this is a pain.

Any suggestions on what I can do to give myself permission to save to this drive. I did not format this drive when I re-installed windows on the new SSD drive as I have a lot of files on it that I did not want to lose. Could this be the reason?

Answer:Solved: No permission to save to second drive

Right click on both drives and go to security. Give yourself permission. Remember you installed the new C drive hence you have new credentials or user name. Give that username/account permission to access the d and e drives.

This is a really strange problem that I have. I don't know what it is, but when I create a file from an application such as paint, gimp, notepad, unity, anything really with a name of "Reset" or "Security" I have no permission to it. Like if I name a file with that name, it becomes out of my permission as adminstrator.

Attached is a screenshot showing that the file has no groups once created.

The reason why this is a big problem for me is because a lot of programs are not working right. Any file on my computer with "Reset" or "Security" will not work as I have to add myself to a group which has a permission through the security tab in the properties of the file.

This is just as confusing as it sounds, but I need this to be fixed to finish a project in Unity. My game cannot be saved as Unity creates a file called "Mono.Security.dll" which makes the saving process screw up. This has been bugging me for a bit now, but I need this to stop.

There's probably other filenames that create the problem, but these are 2 that I have figured out.

If you have questions, just ask.

Thank you!

Every day I have another folder or file that won't open because "I" dont have permission. It is getting daily more files forbidden to open. Now I can't even see my own pictures. I never had a problem on any version of Windows until Win7.
I have tried everything I could read up from Google but nothing helps. I just don't understand what to really do to see my files. I am the only one on this computer. I have Kaspersky, run Malwarebytes nearly daily and SuperantiSpyware. I have Malwaresearch so I never open anything that is not green. Nothing is ever found. It does not matter if the folder or files is on the laptop or on an external drive.

What is it that I don't understand how to take ownership of my files? I have not changed anything on the system. Also many of my pictures suddenly refuse to be shown, it says either they are corrupted or too large. I have no problem to see them on the XP laptop. All I want is to delete double files and pictures. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I have copied an Outlook 2003 .pst file from one computer and want to import that file onto another computer using Windows 7 and Office 2007. Answer:[SOLVED] Windows 7 Permission Issue

Hi, welcome to the forums.

Log into your computer with your normal user account (this account should have admin privileges). .pst is by default a hidden file\folder, go to folder options\view and check "show hidden files and folders".

We will use the Icacls cmd to grant ownership, this is a sample (you will need to substitute your user name, for the one used here, mine) assuming the .pst file is on C drive (if not change).

Go to start, search and type:- cmd, search will return cmd.exe right click on this and select "run as administrator" at the prompt type:-

takeown /f C:\windows
Press enter

SUCCESS: The file (or folder): "C:\windows" now owned by user:- (here you will see your user name, use this instead of "vistatest\paul")

Next type:-

icacls c:\windows /grant vistatest\paul:f
(press enter)

NOTE:- you will get success and successfully processed messages, after these commands

Next type:-

takeown /f C:\
(press enter)

Next type:-

icacls C:\ /grant vistatest\paul:f
Exit out of cmd, Restart computer, and then try your .pst import.

When I put the SD card into a card reader I got a message saying the card needs to be formatted and asking if I want to do that. Recently when I tried to download pictures from camera it wouldn't recognize the camera card reader or even whe I tried to dowload them directly from the camera. So I removed the software and tried to install from my disc and it kept telling me a dll file was missing. I googled the dlll file and found a download for it but it didn't help my problem, so I used system restore to bring software back. Then it wouldn't work because it kept giving me a web timeout error. As I have searched the web and now found there isn't any Kodak Easy Share programs and no support for them. I need a program to just basically be able to move pictures from camera to PC, and some basic editing. Does anyone know of such a FREE program? This is very frustrating!

When I go into Properties-Desktop to change my Desktop picture, I notice that all my personal pics have been loaded in there together with my choice of pictures for use on the Desktop. Yet when I go into Windows-Wallpapers, those personal pics are not there, so therefore cannot be removed.
When I did a search for one of the pics, there were two entries
C:\Documents and Settings\judy\My Documents\My Pictures
C:\My Documents\My Pictures

By removing either, the said picture still remains in Properties-Desktop

If they are not in Web-Wallpaper - 1) how can they be removed and 2) How would they have got there in the first place?

I recently purchased a wider screen for my computer. I use a bunch of photos to illustrate things. When I was using a laptop. there was no particular need to have pics that were much larger than 500x500 pixels. And so I have been going back and downloading newer pics around 1000-1550 pixels so they are not as grainy on the new screen.

The whys of what I am doing are not important. The problem I have is that when I find a new pic and download say around 1000x1000, the folder insists on saving it as either the dimensions of the original or at 225x225 pixels even when I am asking it to replace the original. This gets even weirder - even though I delete the original and then download the newer, larger copy, it is still saving it as the dimensions of the original.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to stop the folder resizing pics like this?
