putting computer into standby mode

Question: putting computer into standby mode

After I click on Start and then the arrow, the field with "sleep" disappears as I move the mouse toward it. Is there a way to prevent this from occurring or is there a short cut for putting windows 7 into standby?

Preferred Solution: putting computer into standby mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Trying to put my parents' PC into Standby mode but the only thing that was closing down was the monitor. What am I doing wrong? Is it okay to leave the PC on Standby all day and then turn off the PC at night?Could someone please tell me the difference between Standby and Hibernate - in very simple terms - and how do you set it up to Hibernaye?

Answer:Putting PC Into Standby Mode

Standby continues to supply power to RAM and certain other system components with the aim of keeping your Windows session in memory. It powers up quickly.Hibernation saves the contents of RAM to a portion of the HDD with some appended data, then shuts down everything completely. To all intents and purposes, it is the same as a shutdown, bar the fact that Windows cannot perform the tasks that it normally performs at shutdown. It boots up quite quickly.

So starting I think yesterday or so, whenever I put my computer on standby mode, it shuts down. When I turn it back on, I get a windows has shutdown improperly message and the thing says Blue Screen.
I standby by closing my lid so I tried pressing the standby button once and turning it on and that didn't seem to have any problems.

I read some of the forum threads and tried to analyze the debug myself and the error is the same, and still is: NT Kernel & System. The ntoskrnl.exe file seems to be causing it. So I restored important Windows files using Samsung Recovery Solution 5. But the problem is still there.
(Is the only solution reinstalling my OS?)

Just bought Lenovo notebook with Windows 10 Home.

On my old VISTA laptop, when I put my computer in sleep mode and then woke it up, I could always view my connected MP3 player and its files.

When I do the same with my new notebook, I have to unplug and re-plug the usb connector in order to view the mp3 files.

I tried fixing by going into device manager, power management for the USB hubs, and unchecking the "allow this computer to turn off..." setting.

I alsodisabled this:
I appreciate help, thanks

Answer:Putting computer in sleep mode stops viewing my connected mp3 player

If you disable USB Selective Suspending and uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power', your MP3 shouldn't have any problems. Perhaps double check witch device you unchecked.

I had to take out the L-Alt Key because if i press it my computer turns off and then when i turn it back on (with the power button on the case) its as if it where never turned off, it just goes straight to the login screen. Another strange thing is that if the Ctrl Key is held down for a few seconds the "e -key" gives a ? instead of E and when this "Euro-Mode" is active the arrow keys dont work. This problem is anoying, i can still open task manager through "start -> run -> taskmgr" The computer only beeps when i press ctrl+alt no other 2 keys make my comp beep.I hope someone can help me, I've already tried using avg spybot, Ad-aware and various other proggies but the problem perisists.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 12:41:04 PM, on 24/05/2009Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files ... It wont seemt o stay in standby. Is there any way I can tell why it keeps starting back up? I have the wake on lan setting turned off and all other wake settings off. Any suggestions? I only want the computer to come out of standby mode if I press a key or touch the mouse.

I've had this strange problem that seems to have gotten worse over the last month or so. The short version is that every time I tried to watch a movie or video or even do some editing, my computer would stop running after a varied amount of time, and go into standby mode. When it first started happening, it was just while watching movies on Netflix. I thought it was an issue with Silverlight, so I uninstalled Silverlight. Problem kept occurring. Then it started happening on YouTube if I was watching something longer than 10 minutes or so. I would pause the video every few minutes, and that seemed to help for a while. But that didn't last too long, and now I can only watch something for maybe a few minutes at most. Now I can't even edit using Adobe Premiere, because scrolling through video clips will cause the computer to go into standby mode. When it first started happening, an audio loop would occur and wouldn't stop until I did a hard restart. Now, the audio will actually continue normally, until I do the hard restart. I have McAfee Total Protection and it doesn't see anything wrong. I ran Malwarebytes and it removed a few threats, but the problem continued. I ran a computer cleaner, and the problem continued.I run the computer in Safemode and the speakers are disabled, my second monitor is disabled, but I can watch media and edit without a problem.I have a Dell computer that is maybe 4 years old tops, and I just replaced the hard drive a year ago. For some reason my computer won't enter standby mode on its own. Most of the time it won't start a screen saver either. I have it programmed to start the screen saver after 3 minutes and to enter standby mode after 15 minutes. However, I'll come back an hour later only to find that the battery has been completely drained. Anyone know why my computer won't enter standby mode or start its screen saver?

I am running Window XP. Standby mode has always made my computer freeze - to the point where nothing works and i have to switch it off at the wall. Therefore i never used it. However, yesterdayand today every now and then, when i move the mouse, and the screen saver clears, i am left with the XP screen saying "preparing for standby mode" . This is only happening on occasion and the rest of the time, the screen saver clears like normal and the screen goes back to whatever i was working on. I can not pinpoint that i'm doing anything different from when it's normal to when the "preparing for standby mode" screen appears

Answer:Standby mode freezes my computer

I can't tell you why it's happening, but I can tell you how to disable standby so you won't have the problem any more Right-click on your desktop and choose Properties. On the Screen Saver tab click the Power button.Set the System Standby option to Never.I tend to prefer to prevent my computers from entering standby (even my laptop) because of issues similar to this in the past. I know there are known issues with standby with certain virus protection programs.Hope this helps!

I'm using a dell inspiron 1520 laptop with windows xp. Recently, I was working on my computer normally when it decided to go into standby mode by itself. The laptop was plugged into an AC outlet so it wasn't the battery. Also, when I re-login, the laptop usually lasts about 5-10 minutes before it goes back into standby mode on its own. There are also periods of time where the laptop can run fine for hours at a time. I've switched all of the power options to never for standby mode but I still experienced the same problem. I don't think its an overheating problem either because the fan seems to be working and it does not feel that hot. Also, sometimes the computer comes out of standby mode and I can here windows working in the background but the monitor remains black. Usually, the monitor remains black in these cases for about 3 minutes before it randomly comes on and allows me to see the usual windows background. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My HP Pavilion 6370Z used to go into and out of standby mode nicely. Suddenly it goes to sleep OK, but instantly pops out again. I can't connect this up with any particular software installation or other change. One day after rebooting it worked OK, but the next time I booted up, it was back to the problem again.

Any ideas,

Some network cards have a WOL (Wake on Lan) option. This is an option that allows remote access to your computer.
If your computer is on, in stand-by, sleep, or hybernate it was designed for you to access your computer remotely.
Not saying this is true, but if you have an always connected access to the internet such as DSL or Cable you could be getting hits to wake up. I would make sure, if you have constant on access to the internet you get a good firewall. Also you can physically disable the WOL by removing the WOL jumper on your network card.

Hi all,

Situation: Windows XP SP2 on an Asus P5GDC-V Deluxe motherboard, 2x80 GB SATA disks, running VGA and network from onboard devices.

I was thinking, let's try the standby mode, but after selecting Start, Shutdown, Standby mode my computer shut down right away. The next day, I was switching my computer on by the power button, but nothing happens! I only see my CDROM's inititializing but nothing on my screen, not even a BIOS beginning!

Anyone any idea about this big problem?

Answer:computer dead after standby mode

What happens when you use a boot floppy?
www.bootdisk.com

Some computers won't allow you to use Standby mode, particularly those with onboard graphics - the VGA drivers don't support Power Management.

Try removing the motherboard battery for about 20 minutes to clear the CMOS.

Hi
First of all, I post this thread here because I don' think It's any software installed that caused the problem
at least I thought so.

I tried to put my PC on standby.

but it seems that every time I put my com to standby mode I can't get it back in running.
I can hear the PC fan running not hard drive when I push the power button. my monitor is on but I see nothing.
I can't turn it on with my mouse or keyboard

I cannot tell when this happened s this is the first time I tried to go on standby made

I believe that this is a problem with the configuration of my bios. I checked my hardware to see if they support standby modes but I believe that they are all Okay.

I Don't know if the information is useful but I'll just tell you all

Im using Windows XP sp2

I just built a new computer for my girlfriends father. I thought I had all the bugs out of it until I took it over there. Found out his printer didn't have drivers for XP on the disk and that when I put it into standby the computer would go into standby (I thinnk) But as soon as I moved the mouse for it to wake up I would see a Blue screen of death and then suddenly it would reboot. When it would restart it gives me the error message and then lists two files, the minidump file and the sysdata.xml I found the printer drivers online but have yet to find an answer about the standby problem. Any Thoughts?

EDIT: For anyone surfing on this issue and arriving here, be advised I've decided simply that the ancient motherboard in this computer simply did not work reliably with my SSD and so I've abandoned the effort.
END EDIT
I'd love if someone here would help me out. This PC does not reliably go into S3 standby, such that while a WOL or keystroke will wake it, this means only that it powers-up but does not start the monitor nor show the keyboard LEDs resetting with Numlock ON as normal. I have to hit reset or power off/on and the I get a startup screen that says it didn't shut down cleanly and usually I Start Windows Normally and it boots fine. Later I do diskchecks and have never had any serious corruptions.

I tried S1 mode, where it seems to work reliably, and after setting BIOS to S3 again on Thursday afternoon it's worked fine i.e. go into Standby, wake automatically for backup to WHS2011 Server, sleep again, a couple of wake/sleeps yesterday by me, and this morning it awakened for Backup fine, and I awakened it from Standby after Backup fine, but then I put it to sleep with AFAIK the standard Windows API (via control gadget) and I got a bad start again about a half hour ago. This is a typical scenario, where it works some times but not (maddeningly) others, and I can't find the "why not".

What is most peculiar to me about these instances is that the System Log never records anything at the time it actually went into Standby--there are no status or error messages, ... Read more

I have been recently having issues with my Dell studio 540. When I put it into sleep mode it is taking as long as 20 min to come out of sleep mode. My monitor is an LG 227 and the power button goes from orange to flashing blue, but never comes on directly during those minutes til the screen comes on. If I put it into sleep mode and go to wake it with in a few min, I usually dont have problems with the monitor resuming, but if I am away for some time it will go back to taking forever to come back on. When I wake it up from sleep/standby mode, it takes it a while for the keyboard/touchpad/mouse to respond to the computer. This happens at the login screen where I go to put in my code. I tried using standby mode after reading about it in this forum. My computer is useless after waking up. I can't even close xp pro. I even have to use the computer power button to shut down windows. My harddrive light stays on all the time as well. My browser never opens, and after 5 minutes of waiting, I finally decide to shutdown and it can't. Is there something I need to know in order for standby to work. I have already looked at the bios but see nothing to change. I am afraid to try hybernate. Is this a software or hardware problem?

I tried reinstalling windows but it did not solve the problem. Instead now, a message pops up saying it is safe to remove the CD drive then goes back to standby.  THis happens in a constant loop, but the problem goes away if I avoid the standby mode and poweroff/on instead. Anyone have an idea what the problem is? So far, I tried updating video drivers and BIOS but has not solved the problem.

Bear with me, this is a bit hard to explain and baffled even my most tech inclined friend. A few weeks ago, we had a power outage, and my machine cut off. The computer itself came back fine, the fan was working, etc, but the monitor was stuck in "Standby" with the orange light on. The only other thing not working was my USB mouse. I tried unplugging, etc, and nothing helped. I tried switching out monitors with no luck, I tried using a PS/2 mouse with no change. When I unplugged the monitor, it came back on and said "Video cable unplugged" it only did he standby thing when plugged into the computer tower. I took the battery out of the computer and let it sit for a while, put it back in, and the computer came back on in an hour or so. I'd been using that method for the past two weeks, but last night it went back off with NO prompting. No storm, no electricity flicker, nothing, and it hasn't come back on. ANY ideas?

Answer:Computer randomly shuts off and stays in "Standby" mode

Sounds as if the video has been stressed by the power surge, this can happen months after a system has been hit by an outage.
Have tried another video card?

Dear people,

After reinstalling my P4010 i do not have the Standby Mode and Hibernate Mode option anymore.

I use Win XP pro, SP2, version 2002

Any suggestions??

Answer:Portege 4010: No Standby Mode and Hibernate Mode

Hello,

go under the Desktop -> Rightclick -> Screensaver -> Power Management.

There you can activate Hibernation and i think there must be a point were you can enable Standby (may be it's helpful if you install your Toshiba Tools).

(My boss's computer...!) His computer suddenly started going into a standby mode about a mo. ago... Sometimes he can click the mouse & get back going, but often he must re-boot. (Older computer - Win98, 64 meg RAM)

Could this be caused by the fact that his battery is running down? (I've, of course, already checked Power Management settings - both in Control Panel & BIOS). I haven't been able to change out his battery yet, but I'm just wondering...

Or something else?

Thanks!

I can't use Hibernation mode and also Standby mode! After switching to those modes my notebook shows blue screen with message "Preparing for Hibernation/Standby mode..." and... there is nothing after this message just like comp is hanging-up. Please advise me somebody what can I do with this.

Answer:I cannot use Hibernation mode/Standby mode on my Satellite

Why you don?t post more details??? ?:|
I don?t understand users who post something but without any information?s about the notebook, which OS was preinstalled, manually or recovery CD, what was done on the notebook, etc? X-(

Sorry for this comment but I hope you can understand my point of view.
However, do you use the OS from Toshiba recovery CD?

Usually if the Toshiba Power saver was installed on the notebook so this utility controls the hibernation and standby mode.
But as I have mentioned above, the OS from the Recovery CD should works. If you have installed it manually so possibly there is something missing.

hi, i was wondering if u could help me, my lil bro's computer is hacked or something, his OS is windows xp media center edition 2005, and i read that i can completely erase his computer by restarting it in MS-DOS mode? i cannot find out where it says "restart in MS-DOS mode" option in the shut down windows dialogue box, all i really need to know is how to restart the comp in MS-DOS mode so i can erase everything, get back to me if ya can please. thank you.

Answer:i need help from somebody, regarding putting windows xp (2005) in MS-DOS mode

Windows XP doesn't use DOS.If you want a fresh start, you have two options:1. Use Windows XP CD for clean install2. Use Recovery CD to bring the computer to its original state.NOTE. In both cases, all personal data, and installed programs will be lost.

I recently purchased a Sony Bravia XBR55X900E tv and I connect my pc to it via HDMI.  Here's is my setup:

Dell XPS 8700 connects to HDMI 2 on Sony TV.
My TV receiver connects to HDMI 1 on Sony TV.
My Sony AVR connects to HDMI 3 on Sony TV, strictly for audio purposes (ARC).
Logitech Harmony one universal remote.

My issue is this:  Whenever I switch between activites (example PC to watching TV), after the TV switches to HDMI 1 from HDMI 2, this puts my Dell into sleep / standby mode.  If I press the power button, it lights up like normal.  If I go back to the PC activity, again once the TV switches from HDMI 1 to HDMI 2, the computer again goes into this "sleep" mode and I again have to press the power button to take it out of it.
All of my pc settings are set to NEVER with respect to monitor or PC going to sleep / standby mode.  Prior to this TV I had my pc connected to an older plasma TV and this never happened.
I contacted Sony to see if it something with their Bravia sync but the person said that everything looked good from the TV's end.
I'm hoping that someone has come across this and can steer me in the right direction as it is really frustrating and I don't know what else to try.

I just got a brand new laptop with Windows Hello. It's very useful for logging in, but my laptop now goes to sleep every time I leave my desk. The red light next to the infrared camera blinks often when I'm using my laptop (which is also pretty annoying), and then if I get up, even for a few minutes (to grab a snack, notebook, etc.) my laptop goes to sleep. I'm pretty computer illiterate, but I suspect that the camera is still looking for me while I'm using my computer and then decides my laptop needs to sleep when it doesn't see my face anymore. Is there any way to change this? I like not having to use a password, but the red light and going to sleep is annoying, especially since I tend to get up from my desk a lot just to stretch. It also seems like having the camera on all the time would drain the battery pretty quickly. Am I way off base here?

I received an Arris TG862 modem from Time Warner Cable quite some time ago and have generally avoided it until now. I had always assumed that the TG862 was already in bridge mode and that I was only using my NetGear R6300 router for wireless, firewall etc. Recently, I was trying to open ports through my R6300, but no matter what they would always remain closed.

Sometime later, I realized that my Arris modem was most likely to blame, so I turned off both its firewall and wireless and switched it over to bridge mode. After restarting the modem, I am unable to connect to the internet. I can still connect to both my router and my modem's login page via the cord that goes from my modem -> router -> computer, but my router is not getting anything. I tried restarting my router as well, but that does not seem to help my situation. In my router's login page, it clearly tells me that the router is receiving no internet from the modem.

For now, I've factory reset'd the modem and the internet connection is fine but I still need to put the modem in bridge mode.

Thanks!

recently i costom built my computer around the time vista was released, its been working smothly on my comp untill a weeek ago it all went wrong and crashed, to be on the safe side i rebooted in safe mode, after then again reboooting it and putting all my settings back to the way they where i thought that it was all over untill recently i noticed little thigs like video's on u tube or any other site not working, aswell as sertain links on a page would not open. this personaly has confussed me! im kinda stuck on how to get it to go back to wat it used to be like before i went into safe mode, please help me!!!!!!!!!!

thanx!!!! yours greatfully Elan2jay!!

Answer:after putting vista into safe mode it will no longer opn java script or flash players

Unless you actually made some changes to the configuration, things should have returned to normal once you rebooted from Safe Mode.

Vista's "System Restore" would probably be the quickest fix for this and you will lose nothing by doing it.

However if you are using Internet Explorer, you might want to go to Tools > Add-Ons and make sure that all the Adobe Flash stuff there is present and enabled.

Also in Internet Options > Security Settings > Custom you can reset all settings there to their defaults.

Finally if you are using a 3rd party firewall -- some of these scripts can be blocked by their configurations.

Is the "standby mode" you are referring to "sleep" ?

Reset the power setting options; see if it helps -
START | type power | select "edit power plan" | "restore defaults"

Question: Standby Mode

I have a HP pavilion 1640a processor.

When we put it “sleep mode” either by pressing the sleep button on the top of the keyboard, or selecting “START/TURN OFF COMPUTER/STANDBY”, the computer screen switches to a blue screen with words “preparing to standby”.

It remains in this frozen state, with no other action able to be performed, and the only thing we can do is manually turn the power off and reboot.

If the computer has been idle for 15 minutes or so, it also enters this frozen state with same blue screen “preparing to standby”.

How can we over come this to ensure the sleep or standby mode is properly operable?

Answer:Standby Mode

Just quit using sleep and hybernate. It causes a lot of problems and a lot of computers.

Yes. Standby usually powers off the keyboard, hence you have to hit a physical button. You usually hit Standby or Power to wake them again.

Question: Standby mode

I use standby mode quite often as a way of quickly restarting my machine during the day, whilst its not in use.

Normally when i select the standby option from within the XP home environment, my monitor turns off, my hard disk shuts down and then my fans go silent.

As of this morning, my fans will not shut down in standby mode. Everything else is as normal, and i can re awaken the machine as normal by pressing any key, yet during the whole time the fans continue to run.

Is there a power management setting that could have been reset? Or maybe something in the bios thats got effected somehow?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Question: standby mode

How long can you have your computer in standby mode? I would like it for a day at a time. I am having a start problem with I guess the power usage, It sometimes come on, then shuts off after 3 or 4 seconds. Sometimes only once, but sometimes more than once. Cannot afford right now to get it fixed or to buy something, so maybe if I can keep it in standby it would not use the initial startup surge of power. Also, I though my mouse would take the system out of standby but it don't. I have to use the power button on the computer, (even though the mouse information says to use this device to take the computer out of standby, it is checked. Are there other areas that I should check to see if something is marked wrong for using the mouse to take the system out of standby? I have an optical mouse incase its needed to know.

Answer:standby mode

May I suggest using the PC's Hibernation mode...

Instead of clicking Stand By, then you click Start > Shut Down, on this screen hold down the Shift key and Stand By will change to Hibernate. The click Hibernate.

You can turn the PC off at the wall, move the unit and when you plug all back and hit the power button, All is restored as you left. Works the same as Stand By but powers off the machine.

If Hibernate is not available when you hold the shift key down, you need to activate this feature from here.

Press Start > Control Panel > Power Options > Click the Hibernate Tab > Click Enable Hibernation and click OK. Then follow the steps above.

Hope this is a better solution for you.

I have a computer that doesn't seem to be able to go/stay in standby mode with the wake-on-lan (wol) feature enabled in bios. From my research, it is my understanding that only a 'magic packet' could wake a computer from standby mode. I have a wireless router with a 3rd party firmware on it.

1. Could the router be constantly sending this 'magic packet' (or other packets)that keeps waking up the computer?
2. If the router isn't doing it, can other computers on the network be sending packets that are waking up the computer?

Basically, I want to be able to keep this computer connected to the router and also have it be able to enter standby mode.

Any suggestions?

Thank goodness for this forum..I enjoy it SO much ! I'm trying to find an answer for a friend of mine that recently upgraded his computer from windows 98 se to windows xp prof. . One problem I can't seem to solve for him is that I can't get his system to go into standby mode. I receive this error:
On a computer that has an ATI Rage Pro accelerated graphics port (AGP) 2X video adapter installed, when you attempt to put the computer into Standby mode, you may receive the following error message:

The device driver for the "ATI Technologies, Inc. 3D RAGE PRO AGP 2X" device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver. This behavior occurs because Windows XP does not provide power management support for this video adapter.

I've already updated his driver to this one: Windows XP Display Driver version 5.10.2600.6010
And I still receive the same message..I'm really wondering if it's something else causing it. Does anyone have any suggestions ? Thanks SO much !!
David

Answer:No Standby Mode

Wow...
I really thought someone in here might have had an answer, suggestion as to how to correct the little problem on my friends computer. The first place I checked was @ the microsoft support center. They acknowledge there's a problem, but they don't suggest a 'fix' for it. Have a safe holiday weekend.

Hi,
I had a "Standby" mode in win XP, which cause the PC to turn off (except the memory ).
It was turned on when I clicked the mouse and gave me the last state I had.
Now , I have only "Hibernate" and it executes Hibernate and not standby.
Anyone knows what to do ?

*** My display driver installed automatically from WIN7, as a generic display card. nVidia has a system search feature which find your display card and they claims that my "driver" is the latest.

Answer:Standby mode in win 7

Hello Isotoper, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm not real sure of what you mean, but you can change your Power Plan Settings to use "Sleep" (standby) instead of "Hibernate". This tutorial can help show you how to. You might also look at the related links at the top of the tutorial if this isn't exactly what you were looking for.

Power Plan Settings - Change

Hope this helps,

Answer:CPU fan still on in standby mode

Standby will reduce power consumption by the system. Some items will be shut down like hard drives or monitor. CPU fans will keep running.

My T61 from time to time will go into standby mode, on its own, sometimes while I am in the middle of typing something.  The power management options are set never to go into standby while on power (not that this is relevant considering it's not even idle when it happens!). I did uninstall Power Manager and Power Management and reinstall, and this fixed the problem for a while, then I had to get a new disk, and it started happening with the new disk/installation too.  Unfortunately this time reinstalling Power Manager and Power Management did NOT fix the issue. Any ideas?

Answer:Keeps on Going into Standby Mode

I have been having the exact same problem.  I have isolated the problem to power management driver versions after 1.43.  (1.60 causes the behavior repeatably.)  Any updates from Lenovo?

Question: Standby mode

I just built a new pc and having trouble with the stand by mode. From my past Dell Dimension system, whenever going into standby mode, the whole system seems like it turns off. The fans and everything. However, now when I enable standby, the harddriver turns off but all the lights and all the fans are still running. How do I configure it to make everything turn off when I go into standby including the fans, lights and etc?

Answer:Standby mode

You might be thinking of hibernate mode, where the computer essentially shuts down, fans and all, but comes up very quickly without needing to reboot. Standby is a little different. The computer still runs but it shuts down a lot of power hogging devices, which sounds like what you're describing. You can set which action your computer takes when you press the power button. The selection is located under power options in the control panel.

I use the "standby" option all the time on my laptop, but never on my desktop.

I just tried using "standby" on my desktop. In doing so, the monitor goes blank and it seems the drives spin down, but my power supply is still on and the fan still spinning. Is this suppose to happen. I thought the PS should shut down and provide just minimal power....or is that hibernation mode?

Answer:Going into Standby Mode

What your looking for is S3 power management. It has to be set in the bios when XP is installed. It cannot be set after installing XP without reinstalling.

It's pretty recent and not all desktops support it.

My standby mode option is deactivated. I want to use that option because it's taking a very long time to boot everytime I shutdown my computer. please help.

Answer:I want to use standby mode but I can't

This is probably not the answer you want to hear, but standby will lead to more issues that it is worth.

Accept the reboot time - you'll be better off.

However, to try to enable it ... Go to the Power applet in the Control Panel. Check the settings there.

Answer:Standby Mode

This person resolved their issue updating their chipset driver. I don't necessarily know that it will resolve your issue; but worth a read.
