Cannot return windows vista screen display to normal from "generic"

Question: Cannot return windows vista screen display to normal from "generic"

Hello,
I'd really appreciate some help. After downloading some free software (GRE PowerPrep), my screen display has been permanently stuck on "generic PnP monitor" in the display settings. I have tried to switch it back to "(Default Monitor)" to get rid of this awful wide screen appearance, but it still stays on the generic. Really really annoying. I have deleted the GRE prep software and restarted several times, to no avail. Help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Cannot return windows vista screen display to normal from "generic"

Hi jmweathe,

Is your computer able to boot up into "Safe Mode"? If so, boot the computer into safe mode and go to the device manager and un-install the videocard. Reboot the computer and boot into Windows and let the Operating System re-detect the videocard. Then install the drivers and see if this alleviates your computer issue. Hope everything works out well for you.

Hi,

I update to windows 10 last week and I LOVE it!  But Today it randomly switched from the normal windows desktops to a tiles home screen.  I have windows 8 and there was always a "Display" tile to bring me back.  Does anyone have
an idea about how to get back to the screen?  The tiles are not nice when I am used to my normal desktop at work.

HELP!

Answer:How to return to the "normal" desktop and get rid of tiles!

Hi mgils,
Base on my knowledge, it seems that you are using tablet mode in windows 10.
You can refer to the following steps to turn off this mode and check if any helps:

Click or tap the Start buttonOpen the Settings applicationClick or tap on "System" In the pane on the left of the screen scroll all the way to the bottom until you see "Tablet Mode"
Ensure the toggle is set to off to your preference.

System - Windows 7 Home Premium - 64 bit
After Mcafee scan shows: 2 "unresolved issues". They are 1. Generic PUP.x!ct 2. Generic PUP.z!ca. Mcafee says under "potentially unwanted programs" that they were "unable to delete" these malware programs. What are they and are they harmful to my system? How do I remove them if necessary? I am a bit of a novice so thanks for the help. THX, SK

Answer:"Generic PUP.z!ca" & "Generic PUP.x!ct" Mcafee - "unable to delete" after scan

Hi there.

Those are most probably false positives. What files are being detected as such?

When something is labeled "Generic" it means that McAfee doesn't know what it is but that it looks like something else it knows about.

Hi TechGuy,

I'm having some recent problems on my laptop. When I log-in and start using it, the performance starts slowing down. When I look at the Task Manager, I notice that the task called Explorer.exe takes up a lot of my CPU. In a couple of minutes, I also start getting Internet Explorer windows to pop-up on my screen (I normally use Firefox) with advertisements suggesting that my computer is infected and some software downloads that could help. I recently installed McAfee Total Works, or whatever they call their 10-in-1 software which is supposed to do it all. I ran several scans, and on some of them, if did find and disable the Generic.dx trojan. Even though it claims it is doing something, I don't notice any changes - Explorer.exe continues to bog me down, and the IE windows keep popping up to the point that I cannot use my computer effectively anymore.

IBM T-40 laptop (about three and a half years old)
Microsoft XP-Professional

Any pointers would be truly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Sandjosh

I recently built a call log database in Access 2007 for my team to use when calling agents on our top errors we see from a vendor's error report. My boss is requesting a report to see how many items have been resolved

I have a query started and I am trying to complete this task in a single query (if possible) instead of several queries (as I've done for a couple other things).

I have 3 tables I'm using: Assignment, AgtInfo and CallLog
Joins as follows: Assignment.st=AgtInfo.agcy_st
AgtInfo.agt_id=CallLog.agt_id

Fields in the results: Assignment.assigned_analyst, CallLog.rpt_mnth, CallLog.resolved

Resolved is a yes/no field. I've done a query that converts the -1 to a 1, so that the sum is a positive number for the "Yes" values. I'm not sure how to enter the expression to subract the "Yes" values from the total number of values (yes/no) to get to my "No" count.

Essentially, I'd like the results to display as:

assigned_analyst, rpt_mnth, CountYes_resolved, CountNo_resolved

Somehow the connection is just not clicking in my brain with everything I've read though searches. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

It is easier to add another column to counf the Nos, use
0 or is null

Which one should I do? I originally wanted to just do "Return computer to factory condition" but Theog just suggested "Use A System Image Created Earlier." I have no idea what to do. So confusing!

Answer:"Return computer to factory condition" or "Use A System Image Crea..."

Hello M4TE and welcome to Seven Forums. Sorry for the delay in responding but I just came across your question.

Most newer manufactured computers have a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. The manufacturer provides specific instructions on how to access that partition in case you want to restore your machine to the exact condition it was in when it left the factory. That means you'd have to go through the time consuming process of cleaning out factory bloatware (like free trials of programs you'll never need), installing programs you do need, updating everything, creating your personal settings, etc. Here is a general idea of how to access the hidden recovery partition.

HP Recovery From Partition

Let's say it took you a day or two to set up your machine to your liking using the hidden recovery partition. A System Image is like a snapshot of your entire hard drive. It will include everything from the operating system to all your programs, files, photos, music, all updates ... everything. Most folks keep it on a separate external hard drive. Let's say a week later you get a virus or your machine crashes for some reason. You can use that System Image to return your machine to the exact condition it was in when you made the image. Usually takes about 30 minutes or so and you're back in business. It's a lot faster and more convenient to only worry about a week of updates compared to probably months with the hidden recovery partition. The newer a System Image is the... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

When turning on my business computer one morning, the space bar and return/enter buttons are visable when i type emails, but when i send them, they are not. I know its a setting, but can anyone tell me what setting and how to turn it off?

Thanks!

I have windows 10. I also have Outlook 13 which I use all day long for work. I prefer to open the email and not just view and respond from the side panel. However, when I close the email, I am automatically returned to what I think is referred to as "my desktop", where I can click the Outlook icon again to return to mail. Problem is, when doing so I'm actually opening another instance of Outlook. Reading/responding to 10 emails gives me 10 instances of Outlook.
This problem is not exclusive to Outlook, just the best way I could explain the problem. Anytime I close a Window, I return to the desktop. For example, in Word when I close a document, I return to the desktop but would rather go back to the Word application.
Is there a setting I can change or is this by design? Thank you!

Hey everyone,

Unfortunately, my computer has been infected with a particularly virulent, or relatively new, virus (for which I am currently awaiting help on the Malware removal sub-forum). I wanted to ask, though, if anyone else has had to deal with this particular Trojan before because, from what I have been able to find out, it (i.e. Trojan_Win32.Generic, or "TidyNetwork.com") doesn't seem to have a remedy as of yet. I've checked just about every virus database I could and have come up empty handed every time. What's more, I've downloaded and ran half a dozen different top-shelf Anti-virus' scans and removal programs, only to end up disappointed.

Does anyone know what the deal with this thing is?

Best,

John

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Hi I have a concern. Just restored an acronis OS backup. Only two drives connected. Sata one is OS. the E-Sata one is a backup drive.

I can access both drives fine via explore, open or double click.
But on the esata backup drive,, I keep seeing a 3rd option "Open Autoplay...". It also allows me to access the drive.

I tried unchecking the 'use autoplay for all media and devices', but this option still persists.

Is this normal for Vista x64 Business?

- Thanks.

Answer:Solved: "Open Autoplay..." context option normal in Vista?

That's quite normal for all removable storage devices on all editions of Windows Vista.

"I tried unchecking the 'use autoplay for all media and devices', but this option still persists."

Unchecking the option merely stops the autoplay dialog box from opening automatically, whereas the right-click context-menu for "Open Autoplay" allows you to open the autoplay dialog box manually. It's a matter of personal preference, but the manual option will always be available in the context menu regardless of the settings in the Autoplay options.

Answer:No Display after "Windows XP Loading Screen"

Sounds like a corrupt or incorrect monitor driver.

Boot into safe mode, change it to super vga or some such, restart, if that fails just try a few differant combinations. You may want to temporarily disable your video card soft ware, such as vpu recover and any 3rd party video utilities. Also may wanna disable power saving and auto monitor detect.

Just a quick question regarding the default audio driver Vista installs; has anyone seen a comparison done between it and drivers written specifically for your hardware?

I know a few people (some are technophobes, some "enthusiast" types) who've never installed the drivers, instead opting to use the "default" driver since it seems to work fine.

For those of us who don't require advanced audio features usually provided by the hardware-specific drivers, have any of you noticed a difference in CPU utilization, etc.? Or is this simply a case of folks being too lazy to bother?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

There seems to be an issue with the latest patches release by Microsoft. A number of our laptops had a problem about a minute or two after booting. They would receive an error similar to this [svchost.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x745f2780"] and the error continues onward. It seems to affect laptops more than pc's. Microsoft has released a hotfix for the problem found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891/
Follow the instructions for calling Microsoft tech support. (800) MICROSOFT (642-7676) Note when you get to their menu system at one point you will be asked if your copy of windows came with your computer or you purchased your copy of windows. Just select the option for "you purchased your copy". Otherwise it will tell you to call your vendor for the problem. Also another menu option to choose will be #2 (pro support). If you continue on to tech support just tell them you need the hotfix # KB927891. In most cases I found they won't even ask for your serial number or product key and will proceed to email you the hotfix. Sorry I don't have a place on the web that I can make the download available.

There is also an issue in which a different error may occur shortly after booting in which you receive a "generic host process" error. A link to fix that can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894391

Answer:Fix for "svchost.exe" error and "Generic host process"

This also shows as svchost or wuauclt using 90-100% of CPU for long periods of time. You see it a lot on networks that use a WSUS server

Hello everyone.

I'm new here so I hope I'm doing everything the way it is supposed to be done.
For starters I have first used the "Search" function, however this didn't lead me to a solution of my problem.

Problem:
Some text appears as Extra Large even though Font size (under Appearance) is set to "Normal".

Please have a look at the screenshot (attached) as it is quite hard to describe whats going on.

Important to note is that the installation of "StyleXP" and the applying of the "Panther" Theme has been done AFTER this problem occurred so I don't think there is a relationship there.

The problem is also not limited to the "Epson Scan" program (seen in the screenshot) I just used it as an example.

It often happens in "Program Menus" and "Dropdown lists", and only within the OS, not inside any browsers (Firefox or IE).

The OS works fine except for this issue.
I'd really appreciate any help regarding this problem.

Maybe there is a way to fix this in the registry?

Kind regards and thanks for reading.

I am being driven crazy, PLLLLEEESSSEE Help. My laptop, running Windows vista Basic, shows that it is connected to the internet with Excellent signal strength both wireless and ethernet. However it says "Unidentified Network" and "Access: Local Only" and is not really connected to the internet. My Tower computer (on Windows XP) is connected, that is what I am using now. My MAC IPad is connected fine. I recently changed my Router to TP-LINK through my local provider (Don't want to call him out to fix it as it will cost me an automatic 50 Euros). I live in Spain. I have tried all sorts eg disabling IvP6 etc but no internet. Can anyone out there please help me.

Are you using a VPN program? That sometimes makes the pc say local only. Can you open websites in IE or connect to the xp computer by tiping \computername in the adress bar. If you can don't worry. If not in routers web interface disable MAC address filtering.

Hi guys!

So i tried installing windows 7 Home Premium using an empty HDD. The old OS was Vista, and it was located in the same HDD. I managed to install Windows 7 successfully, but when booting after the install it crashed right after the "starting windows" screen. It then gives me the choise between starting the startup repair tool, or to start windows normally. When i run the startup repair tool it can not fix the problem. I've tried different HDD but the problem still persists. The fact that I haven't got a clue what to do really annoys me. In addition it isn't even my own pc. My dad's vista started failing on him. So I figured: Hey, why not install windows 7 using my old disk from a pc I don't use anymore. I appreciate all help.

Hi, being new here. I just discovered having this problem today. First thing this morning I went to my computer. When the login screen came up, I entered in my user and password. Then I saw the "Welcome". Which stayed there for about five minutes before I restarted the computer, which didn't fix my problem. I tried Safe Mode, which didn't make a difference. It didn't take as long, but then I saw the blue screen. It said something like "---- unexpectedly close." Then at the bottom there were memory dumps. I couldn't see what was there because the blue screen was there for five seconds, before the PC restarted itself.

It was working fine last night. Before my six year old sister was playing with the computer despite my attempts to make a password account and full parental controls.

I believe I did manage to log in to another account that's not the administrator, but when I when to modify the user accounts the whole motherboard crashed. Every program, even the desktop. I couldn't do Alt + Tab and the Ctrl +Alt + Delete.

Please help me fix this thing. I need it to do my classwork.

My name is Ken and I appreciate any and all advice in advance. I dispense a lot of advice on hi-fi boards, but I know just enough about computers to defer to the experts. Feel free to slap me around and teach me a lesson if I appear stupid or violate any board etiquette. I can take it.

Here's the deal:

My computer suddenly lost all of its cookies for sites I frequent.

Then, right after that happened, Norton told me that it stopped some malicious code.

I started getting a "Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services..." error and my computer started stalling when I went into Microsoft Word or IE.

I updated Windows, updated my HP software (based on a quick Google search), and scanned my entire system with Norton.

Norton says it killed the "Downloader" virus.

My computer is still bringing up the "Generic..." message and when I try to unmute my volume button, it says there are "no active mixer devices available." I'm just waiting for my computer to freeze up again.

I often have a motherload of tabs opened, sometimes reaching past 100. When one browser starts to choke on the amount of tabs, I pop open another one.

However, it seems that eventually there's a point when the entire system gets unbearably sluggish, like 3-4 second delays even opening the start menu.

Naturally, I assume it's the plethora of open tabs and the memory the browser(s) are taking. When I check the memory usage, however, it often only shows about 7GB out of 12GB in use... plenty of memory to spare. Additionally, the CPU is hardly being used, before and after all the tabs being open/closed.

Now the REAL enigma is that even if I close all of the browsers completely (exiting them, making sure memory gets fully released), the system STILL remains as sluggish as it did. Only after a full reboot does it return to its snappiness.
What in the world would be causing this? First, how come Windows slows to a crawl with all those tabs open, even though there's plenty of free memory/CPU to spare? And then even more perplexing, how come when I exit them all, the system still crawls as if it's swimming through cold molasses?

Hello,

I went to msconfig just for a look, and noticed the radio button was set to "Selective Startup". I thought it was supposed to be set to "Normal" Startup, which loads all drivers, etc.

Is it supposed to be set to "Selective" or "Normal" ? If it is supposed to be set to "Normal" then that was how it was set after we finished with the last trojan removal and housecleaning. It WAS set to "Normal", as I best recall last month.

How, then, did it get switched to "Selective" ?

I couldn't find your page on that subject, but didn't spend an hour looking. I know you have instructions for this in the basic maintenance section somewhere.

Please post that page link, so I'll know if I'm okay or in some trouble.

Thanks again for all your abundant assistance in these matters.

Hello folks. My first post so I'll try to keep it concise. I did a forum search, but found nothing that addresses my particular situation.

I just completed installing Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The installation went fine and and so far I have no graphic card problems. My card is a Radeon HD 4830 and as of now I'm using the default drivers installed during setup. I'd like to install current ATI drivers and the Catalyst Control Center so I have more settings flexibility. The following is the current driver information from Device Manager.

Driver Provider - ATI Technologies
Driver Date - 4/25/2009
Driver version - 8.56.1.16

I have the new ATI driver package downloaded and ready to install. My question is this. Since the drivers now being used are from ATI, should I or do I need to uninstall them prior to a driver update? I checked in the Add/Remove Programs and there are no ATI entries. If I need to uninstall do I remove from within Device Manager?

I don't want to screw up a perfectly working Win 7 install by doing something stupid. Any advice will be much appreciated.

When upgrading your graphic driver you MUST remove all traces of the current driver. In order to do that we recommend using

Phyxion.net - Driver Sweeper

When it is removed then download and install the fresh copy.

Hello all, sorry to be such a newbie. I did try to research this but way too many conflicting answers and do not want to make things worse. Bought a PC from eBay and it ran fine. Did not give me any disks with purchase. Put it away as a back up and now will not go past "system is starting" "to interrupt normal startup, press enter" screen. The keyboard num lock will go off if pressed. I tried a different cloned HD and same result. I have a boot disk in CD drive. I can get into BIOS by  holding F1 and changed/saved start sequence to 1- IDE CD   2- IDE HDD   without any success as reboot goes back to same frozen screen.  Any ideas and thank you for your help!

Help! I've been trying for a few days to solve this, but MS and Google Searches haven't been able to help out at all.

On Windows 8 the Windows Store fails to start up on my wife's account. When you click on the app, you get the start screen for the windows store with the circle animation at the bottom, but that's it. It just stays on that screen, with the circle spinning around, and never goes any further.

It was that way on my account too. (Same computer.) Then on my login I ran wsreset.exe and it fixed the problem. But on my wife's login when I run wereset.exe, still the same problem -- wsreset.exe brings up the Windows Store start screen, then the start screen just sits there...

STUFF I'VE TRIED SO FAR, BUT IT DIDN'T FIX IT:
(Not really in order, especially since I've tried some of these a few times!)
1. Run wsreset.exe
2. Run sfc /scannow
3. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth [as administrator]
4. Open a PowerShell [as administrator] and run Repair-WindowsImage -Online -RestoreHealth
5. Download and run the Microsoft UI App troubleshooter
6. Run [as administrator] powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.xml

The most curious thing is that Windows Store works on my account but not my wife's account! The biggest difference is that she's running with a Windows Live ID and I'm just running with a local login. Don't know if that makes a difference...?

Please let me know wha... Read more

It appears that every time I try to open the cover and it either unlocks or goes to the password screen (it's set to ask for password after 3 minutes, but was at 15 minutes for testing) it hangs for 3-5 seconds saying "resuming...". It then brings up the password screen or the home screen depending on how long I waited. Is this normal behavior? Is there a setting I can fix this with?

Hello everybody,

Let me first say that indexing is off on my machine for performance reasons, so if this is the reason, please say so :-)

Previously searching using the search bar at the top of the windows screen would search as normal no matter which folder is open.

Now, however all is fine, except if I'm inside "My Documents". You type a name in the search field and nothing happens, it's as if the field is blank. It's not that it doesn't find a file, it's that is simply doesn't even begin to search.

If I type the path, for example, C:\Users\Username\Documents it'll search there, but if I open the "Documents" with Windows start menu, the problem happens.

Searching for similar problems, most have something related to indexing services, or to restart or re-index, but my indexing services is off, whenever I install a new system it's one of the things I turn off alongside Windows Aero and it worked fine previously.

If anyone has a clue what this could be (it started some 2 weeks ago, was perfectly fine previously, no changes made to the system itself before or since) that would be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards

Hi,

Has anyone any idea on what is the difference between Windows 7 Home Premium Gold and "standard" edition? It is available from Dutch retailers, but they were unable to give me an answer. Googling forums and Microsoft web site (including Dutch one) also did not bring any results, except for more offers.

Could it be SP1 version or there is more to it?

There is no "Gold" version of Windows 7. You can read about the different versions available at Microsoft homepage.

My personal suggestion is to ditch IE8 and use Firefox or another up to date browser of choice. You may be running into formatting issues as well as lack of support for modern features. I use Firefox with my Windows XP Builds and they run top notch on Firefox with no problems with all websites I visit which vary from email accounts over the web to youtube and Netflix etc. Also from systems I have tried IE8 on with XP trying to surf the web some sites report that your browser is not up to date and the site no longer supports IE8 or requires IE10 or newer etc.

I am running Windows 10 Professional 64 bit. Whenever I set the option "Turn off the display" to "Never", it reverts back to the default "15 minutes". This is under the "High Performance" profile. It will revert back even if I do not restart.

That sounds like my problem - I leave the computer for an hour and it is shut down (I think sleep mode). I just need to hit the power button and it comes on to where it was when I left - but 2 of my USB devices are lost so I have to restart the computer anyway.

Hi,

I just tried to install the latest iTunes update, but keep getting an error when it tries to access the C:\Program Files\iPod folder.

When I try to access the iPod folder directly through Windows Explorer, I get "Access is denied".

The same happens when logged in with the system administrator account.

When I right-click the folder and choose Properties > Security, the Current owner field shows "Unable to display current owner." And it won't allow either of the listed administrator accounts to take ownership.

When I choose Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner, the Current owner field also shows "Unable to display current owner." And it won't allow me to Edit it either.

I've tried opening the Command Prompt as the administrator, and deleting the folder, but it won't allow me to do that either.

Any ideas on how to forcefully take ownership and/or delete this folder?

Answer:"Access is denied" - "Unable to display current owner"

Check in the file security tab that there isn't a deny entry for the user group "everybody"

Hi,

Here's a strange one, but lots of strange things happen with Vista. I'm running Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP2.

I clicked on the My Computer icon. I should get a list of drives (and Users and Marlene) down the left pane that I can expand to list folders and subfolders in the left pane. When I select the subfolder I want, its files and folders are shown in the right pane. I can do things like display files from one drive in the right pane, and drag/copy things from it to a different drive in the left pane. This is how it always works -- all the way back to XP (and 98?) op sys days.

Instead of that normal display, the left pane showed "Preferred Links" with a list of things like Documents, Pictures, etc. No drives were listed. Clicking on one of these "links" listed its folders in the right pane. I messed around with "Views" and "Organize" and now I have the left pane listing my drives, but no folders or subfolders. When I click on a drive, it's folders are shown in the right pane.

How do I get my normal view back?

About a week after Clean Installing Windows 10 from an upgraded version on my laptop, I noticed that i wasn't able to Create a New Folder anywhere, from Desktop to File Explorer Directories. Nothing! Even when i try clicking the "New Folder" Button in the Ribbon or pressing Ctrl+Shift+N it still won't work. In the Context Menu (Right Click), I can't find the "New" Button too. Is this normal for Windows 10 after being installed? Do i have to install something (maybe an update) for the "New" to appear in the Context Menu?

Looks like a permission issue. Check the permissions for the desktop folder. In Windows Explorer right click on the desktop folder, select properties and there go to the security tab. You should have write permission for that folder.

Hi all,
So, Win 10 has just completed a routine update, (that is Windows 10 updating itself through win updater - not updating to Windows 10 from an earlier version) and now the classic desktop has gone, and has been replaced by the Windows 8 style (the one with live tiles and so on).

Anyone any clue how to change this back - before windows 10 updated itself my desktop was fine - I just want the classic style back with normal icons and so on (if that makes sense!). I can't see any options for it.

EDIT - typical, as soon as I post this I manage to get it working again!! Windows had switched itself to tablet mode somehow (why it did that on a laptop.....!). So switching that off in settings returns everything to normal.

I got the "ATI display driver has stopped responding and has recovered from an error" several times over the last couple of days where my screen would freeze for a couple of second and then start working again and would display that message. I thought little of it as it did always seem to work afterwards.

Last night however it got extremely frequent happening at least once a minute and i decided to try and restart my computer to see if that would help at all. Now when I try to turn the computer on the screen stays black and will not do anything. I can hear that the computer trying to work as the fans are going and the power light is on, it's just the screen that isn't working.

How to troubleshoot

"Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error in Windows 7 or Windows Vista

I found these guides on how to fix the error message but at the moment both are no good as I can't even use my computer to fix the problem as the screen won't work.

I am pretty sure the reason my computer is doing this is because of outdated drivers as I recently did a fresh install of windows and only installed the drivers that came on the CD I was given with my computer. I should have downloaded the latest drivers online.

I am running Windows 7 on a Dell Studio 1558 laptop. I am unsure of the graphics card at the moment as I can't access the computer but I know that it is an ATI of some sort.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I'm getting a blue screen error when logging on to my computer in normal mode, and then it shuts it self down to prevent harm to my computer it says.

My PC will not boot in normal mode. I am able to boot it in Safe Mode. The operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1) which has been updated through Automatic Update regularly.

When I run McAfee Virus Scan while in Safe Mode it indicates that it has found and fixed 2 instances of ?NTOSKRNL-HOOK? ?Generic Rootkit.d!rootkit??5?. While McAfee indicates that this has been fixed, every time I try to boot the computer the same thing happens (e.g. fails to boot in normal mode, only boots in safe mode) and McAfee finds the same rootkit issue when I run it while the PC is in safe mode. McAfee seems to be incapable of fixing the issue despite the indication that it has done so. Any help on this will be very much appreciated

Note: I'm running Windows XP installed through Bootcamp on a Macbook Pro 13" Late 2009 model.

Recently, I found out my laptop screen no longer functions when using Windows XP. It boots up normally, gets past the "welcome" screen, and then reaches my desktop. It stays fine for a few seconds, then suddenly goes black. I tried shining a flashlight to see if it was a lamp problem, but there was no "faint outline" of anything, meaning its not the lamp's problem. However, I know my laptop's still running because of the fan noise and the beeping sounds.

Then, I tried plugging my laptop to my Phillips 230T 23" display, and everything worked fine. I could see my desktop, and everything normally. I also booted in Mac OSX and things worked fine too, both on the display and on the laptopscreen. No black screen there, but only while using Windows on the laptop screen itself. This means its not a video card problem either....

Any advice/help?

Thanks!

Had some power supply problems, caused my HDD to power down while the system was running, and as a result, windows got screwed.

Managed to repair windows but now when my screen saver starts, the PC gives a BSOD, I managed to disable the Screen saver using group policy, but whenever I try to go to the screen saver tab, it crashes with a dll error, so need to know what files to replace to fix it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

You could try doing the following (Please unhide hidden files first, by opening any folder and going to Tools -> Folder Options -> View (Tab) -> Show hidden files and Folders)

Start -> Run -> sfc /scannow

That will run the System File Checker, which will check all the files on your PC and try to fix any that are borked. You'll need you windows install CD to replace the bad ones.

That might fix it for you.

A bit of an annoying problem here. For some reason, the "On Resume Display Logon Screen" screen saver function has stopped working. It used to work, but for some reason it has stopped working. When I step away from my computer, I want to "protect" it by requiring a password logon upon stopping of the screen saver. But even though I have this checkbox checked, IT DOESN'T WORK! I have scoured the web for a solution to this problem to no avail. I have gone into the Registry to the key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop to ensure that the ScreenSaverIsSecure key is set to a value of 1. Nothing works! When I jiggle the mouse on any screen saver it DOES NOT PROMPT ME FOR MY PASSWORD, but rather opens my computer right up. Does anyone have a clue as to how to fix this??? Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Thanks for any and all advice!

Hey fellas,
Recently I adopted a strange problem in Vista x64. I have a home network, which works fine. Just recently, something strange started happening. Now when I click on "network" from the start bar(or anywhere for that matter) the window goes blank, as if its not even going to the "network places". Its hard to describe, so I will paste a screen shot. Sometimes it works fine. When I just boot the computer it works fine, then a little while later it just magically stops(yet anything connected through the network still technically works, like media streaming etc... I just no longer can see anything in "network"). It just seems as if the explorer is not working correctly, but I have no idea what could possibly cause this. I've tried deleting my network and adapters and re-doing everything(including clearing all network info from the registry) and it did nothing. I thought maybe it was a firewall update, so I uninstalled firewall, no effect.

Here's the screenshot:

Any ideas?

It doesn't even come up with the green bar along top or the sidebar on the left. My shared folders on this PC don't even show. Nothing is even displayed in the location bar. Its just as if explorer stops displaying the network after the computer has been on for so long.

If I end task on explorer in task manager and open explorer back up, it works again(like a reboot). Then not after long, it goes back to not working. Very frustrating cause I often transfer files bet... Read more

Eek, yes, I know, Vista, but;

Recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite Notebook with Vista 32-Bit Home Premium, and after about a day of running internet, firewall, anti-virus on the computer I'm having problems loading pages. I've been using IE7 until now, and after about 15-minutes of use, it will load pages after 3 minutes, or not at all. My network configuration and games still connect, meaning I still have an open network connection, the browsers just quit working. I also am using Firefox 3.4 now and still having the same problem with no avail.

I'm also using ZoneAlarm and avast!Anti-Virus. I've had trouble with installing ZoneAlarm but it works perfectly now.

Specs:

OS: Vista/32-Bit
Type: Toshiba Satellite LE350
RAM at 3GB
Using a LAN to connect through a router that handles 3 computers, Cable internet.

Hi all,

So I'm kind of stuck.. I currently have the problem where I am in an endless cycle of "loading files" -> "Windows Boot Manager" (see: How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way)).
I have tried to load all of the options -- and none successfully load.
I also end up at a OneKey Recovery as well.. unfortunately, the laptop does not have initial backup or user backup images.
I have a Windows 8 CD for repairing purposes.. however, I cannot load the BIOS/UEFI to change the boot order to load the optical drives first. I have also tried to remove the CMOS battery to fix it.. did not work. .
Also - Windows Boot Manager:
Windows Setup [EMS Enabled] -- does not load properly (leads to OneKey Recovery) Safe Mode (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Networking (does not load properly) Safe Mode with Command Prompt (doesn't load - tries to boot and load all files onto partition that is too small.. can't change partition?)
Enable Boot Logging Enable Low-Resolution Video Debugging MOde Disable automatic restart on system failure Disable Driver Signature Enforcement Display Early Launch Anti-Malware Driver
Start Windows Normally
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Title is supposed to say that it is NOT animated.

I recently purchased a Dell Studio 1737 direct from Dell.

Every time I turn on my laptop and log into my account, there would be a blue, animated circle cursor indicating that the laptop was just turned on and that it is working in the background.

Later on however, I noticed that whenever there were programs working in the background, my cursor shows a blue circle with a light in it, but it wouldn't be animated. This usually happens about 15 minutes after the laptop has turned on. I'm assuming that the cursor SHOULD be animated just like how it was during start-up.

I tried switching the pointers (eg. aero large to aero regular) and it seemed to solve the problem (i think), but after a while, the circle becomes frozen again; I am faced with the same issue. I tried downloading and installing different cursor sets (from DeviantART), and the ones that WERE animated in ANYWAY, were also frozen after a couple minutes.

I'm wondering if anybody else has had this problem and would greatly appreciated it if they provided a solution.

I'm using a 64-bit 7 Home Premium with ATI Radeon HD 3650.

Thanks in advance!

I accidently posted this in "Vista" so I'm reposting it here as the operating system I have is XP Professional.

I'm having a problem with "Display" in the Control Panel. Yesterday I visited a website and opened a file. After I did that, my wallpaper changed and it appeared to be whatever the website was. I was able to somehow get it off (don't ask me what I did, I couldn't tell you). Now, when I click on "Display" in the Control Panel and go to "Desk Top", the only thing that I can change is the color and I can also click on "Customize Desktop", but I cannot change the background or click on "browse...". Can you help?

My computer illiterate uncle's computer is acting odd. Well, at least the display properties is. Every time he tries to apply or even press ok, the display properties window freezes, no matter which tab he goes and what he changes. The computer itself does not freeze and every thing else is perfectly able to run without any harm when the display properties window is frozen. What I noticed (and he didn't) was that after a certain amount of minutes (around 3 or 5 minutes) the display properties becomes unfrozen and you are able to fully operate the window without any hassle.

When I end tasked the display properties, it said that Rundll32 has ended or whatever (the usual thing it says).

What I found odd is that when he would change his resolution, the background would practically cut in half. One part (usually the top) would stay the normal background picture and the other half of the picture would turn black.

I've never really encountered this problem before.

For extra info: he's using Windows XP.

Thanks.

My notebook is set to the recommended screen resolution, under display settings that allows you to change the text size indepdenent of the screen resolution, I was expecting to see 3 radio buttons (as per the windows 7 tutorial) but I can see only "Small" and "medium". I haven't played around with different screen resolutions to see if it has any effect.

I wonder if it needs some driver update or related to my screen resolution or whatever? Thanks.

Answer:display settings only shows "Small" & "Medium"

I really don't know, but the Nvidia driver automatically makes some adjustments, depending on what it is installed on. I suspect that they feel no one would want the large text on a small display.

I'm having a problem where it says "Display driver stopped working and has recovered".  I see where several others have posted about this, but I'm unable to locate a fix here or reply to other similar posts for some strange reason.  I have a 4 month old Inspiron 15 5559 laptop runing Windows 10 Home x64. The problem occurs intermittently  when I go to the tomshardware.com forums.  It occurs most often with Firefox (version 45.0.1) but it also happens with IE11.  It happens usually after I post a note there, then click the back arrow a couple of times to go back to the listing of all the posts.
According to Device Manager, I have version 20.19.15.4300.  When I tell it to scan for an updated version, it says I already have the most current driver for the Intel HD graphics 520.
Please advise how I can get rid of this problem.  Thank you.

Answer:Inspiron 5559 "Display driver stopped working & has recovered" leaving black screen. Win 10.

I have the same issue with Inspiron 7559. But, not just in web browsing. It happens in Word, Peachtree, etc. So, my thoughts are the problem is a Windows 10 display driver issue, which should be fixed by a driver update provided by the manufacturer. I did a system scan on Dell Support Assistant (thy actually are run every week) and my system has the latest drivers, according the DSA. Get on the stick, Dell. Interesting thing is, it doesn't show up in the System Events in the Dell Support Assistant software - not even as an "info" point. It's like Dell is ignoring the Windows error.

I am running Windows 8 64 bit

Apparently I scanned my system using full system scan (AVAST) and left my computer on thinking it would take for many hours. When I came back, my computer automatically shutdown because it was left standby for about 4 hours. I don't know if the scan was finished. When I try to boot, the screen gets stuck on "please wait" screen or "configuring windows. Do not turn off your computer".

I already tried going to System Recovery Options screen, then going to Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, but I tried everything there and still the issue persists even when I tried to boot in safe mode. I tried going to command prompt, and type sfc/ scannow but it says it can't scan right now. I also tried chkdsk / R but it says the same. I don't know how to run cmd as administrator from the System Recovery Options.

So now I tried to use system restore but I am stuck to the windows logo for about 1 and half hour. I don't know if I should wait for this or it is already stuck. In other forums I read, they used system restore with only the "C:" disk group connected. Should I also do this?

I am thinking to remove AVAST or somehow disable it.

Please help me.

As this question was never answered I'll post it verbatim with my own comments below,
See original post here;
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/756093-flash-drive-s-active-light.html

In all operating systems up to Vista, the flash drive's "active" light turns off when I go through the disconnect procedure; but, in Vista, it doesn't. I have traditionally used this as part of my explanation to others (and a convenience to myself) about when to not to remove the flash drive from its USB port.

This is a problem common to all Vista systems I've seen.

Why does the light not turn off in Vista?

And, is there an easy way to correct this?

Additional information: I have eliminated this problem being hardware-related. I have loaded Vista onto one of my systems here that previously had Windows 2000, then XP on it and it was only with the loading of Vista that the problem developed on this system. Just to be absolutely sure, I did a restore of a previous image of Windows 2000 and the problem went away again. I put Vista back on and the problem came back. So, this is strictly a Vista problem.Click to expand...

I have had the same problem with every Vista system I have used and every flash drive (note this means SSD NAND flash not HDD's or card adapters). Answer:Flash drive's "active" light doesn't turn off in Vista when "safely removed"

have done a litte research and testing in my lab on several machines and have confirmd the problem. What it seems to indicate to me is that, in Vista, the light simply indicates power, not data transfer. Whenever I am transferring data, the light blinks.

While I have never actually tested it, I do not belive that the "safely remove" feature actually kills all power to the USB port in XP. If that is the case, then there is really no danger as long as vista has acknowledged the disconnect and knows not to try to write data to the drive.

I'm trying to fix my brother's computer after he opened a trojan attached to an email. The email was the one saying your credit card had been charged for airline tickets.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 3100 running Windows XP SP2.

The first problem is that after normal login there is a blue screen with a yellow window in the window with the message

"Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer."

There are no icons visible. The only action I can perform is CTL-ALT-DEL to bring up the Windows Task Manager. I told my brother to start in Safe Mode from which he scanned the computer using AVG Free Edition which was installed before the infection. This did not fix the problem.

Starting Safe Mode I now get a black screen with Safe Mode in the corners and the operating system name at top. The blue login screen then comes up with Administrator and my brothers account. I click on Administrator and I get the same black screen as before with Safe Mode in the corners and the writing at top. My brothers account does the same. There are no icons or Start button visible.

Again, the only program I can bring up is the Windows Task Manager. Using that, I managed to install and run SmitfraudFix which was given as a solution to "Spyware detected" screen. After rebooting this did not fix the problem. I also installed SpyHunter 3.5.11 which found Zlob.Trojan, Rogue.AntivirusXP 2008 plus some other ... Read more

Answer:IE9 Vista "cannot display the webpage"

I really need help. The problems were caused by a windows security update on 11/13/12. Since I tried all the fixes I could find and nothing worked, I installed the 11/12/12 instance. Everything worked last night.

When I started the laptop this morning it had installed the windows updates and I was back at no IE and can't receive email in Outlook again.
My service provider is ATT so they are no help with the Outlook issue:
Receiving reported error: 0x80042108

The IE9 Vista 64 security update that is causing the problem is KB2761451
Not sure which of the updates is causing the Outlook problem. I am thinking about moving to Windows 7.

My working theory is to blame MS ... haha - my guess being that a general update of Live Essentials/Live-Mail caused the non-permanetly-deleted messages to be 'unmarked' as deleted

At any rate the symptom is simple: suddenly "out of the blue on a fresh restart of Windows 7 PC, when executing Live Mail, around 800 previously-deleted messages all find their way back to the Inbox.

When Outlook Express is opened, every e-mail that was sent "return reciept requested" causes Outlook Express to try to send a return receipt, which then fails resulting in an error message.

OE ignores all changes to the "return receipt" functions and continues to try to send them even before they are opened; when the mouse hovers over the particular e-mail.

A recent malware infection (which has been removed) caused a change in the registry and turned off Task Manager (which has been corrected). I suspect the problem with OE is also a registry issue, but cannot Google any information on this specific function or issue.

Two questions:

1. Is there a registry entry that controls the fuction of OE's "return receipt" function ?

2. If OE is uninstalled & reinstalled, will the stored e-mails be lost ?

An aggravating factor is that sbcglobal does not have a configuration setting to prevent duplicate e-mails from being downloaded and a recent change to the e-mail account by sbcglobal has resulted in the messages being duplicated 2 and 3 times in OE, and it is attempting to download another 4000 ( ! ) more, which will also all be duplicates.

This "return receipt" problem is preventing the ability to delete the duplicate & unwanted e-mails, so OE's functionality is reduced to nil.

Also, is there a static limit to the number of messages that OE can store & manage ?

if the value in any column is less than 60 it should return the result of FAIL

=IF(B5>=60, IF(D5>=60, IF(F5>=60, "PASS", "FAIL")))
If the score for the first argument is less than 60 it returns the value of False when it should be Fail.

If the score for two arguments is less than 60 returns the value of False when it should be Fail.

Any thoughts?

Answer:Solved: Nested IF statement return first value as False and should be "Fail"

Hi Daisy-Girl, and welcome to TSG.

Am I safe to assume you are doing this in some version of Microsoft Excel?

If so, you need to use a separate "FAIL" for each case of the IF test being false.

Code:
=IF(B5>=60, IF(D5>=60, IF(F5>=60, "PASS", "FAIL"),"FAIL"),"FAIL")
FWiW, it might be more logical and easier to understand if you used a single IF function that used the AND function to combine the individual column tests.

Under "View" I had set "Normal Layout" with HTML text style
Recently new e-mails began being created in "Web Layout" in HtML text style.
Under "View" I have tried resetting in "Normal Layout" and also "Print Layout" with HTML text style and also tried Rch Text BUt nothing will stick,
the setting keeps going back to "Web Layout."

Very irratating, I hope someone can help.

Hi all,

Can anyone help me with how to reconfigure the onscreen display in win98? When I go into control panel and open "onscreen display", it shows font size as normal or whatever I set it at but it doesn't have a font in the box --when I put one in, it immediately is out of there again. I inadvertantly messed this up and all the type in all the gray windows boxes is way too small to be comfortable reading it.

Howdy everybody! I have a new XPS 8910 with Windows 10.  When I hit the Windows & Print Screen keys, it is supposed to generate a picture of my Desktop into a Folder, within Pictures, labelled “Screenshots.” But there is no such "ScreenShots" folder there! What should I do? If I simply create a new folder, and label it “Screenshots,” will do that do the trick? Or is there a more complicated fix? Your help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:No "ScreenShots" Folder in Pictures To Hold " Print Screen" Images!

Is it just saving the screenshots somewhere else or is it just not taking screenshots at all? Don't know about your specific system, but on my Win 10 lappy, the screen blinks (dims) when the screenshot is taken.
Did you look in all the subfolders in Pictures to see if Screenshots folder is buried in one of them?
Win 10 also has a Snipping Tool which will allow you to put a box around the part of the screen you want to capture and then you can save it wherever you want. Maybe that's easier, and you can pin the Snipping Tool to the Start menu so it's easy to find.
