Windows update completely stopped working, unknown error 8024402C

Question: Windows update completely stopped working, unknown error 8024402C

I honestly think I need some advanced help here because Ive tried about every solution I could find that pertained to me using Google.

So all of a sudden my windows update just stopped working/checking for updates(I get unknown error 8024402C ) and I cannot connect to some Microsoft websites like "" and the download place for ie 10, Firefox says it cant find the server at "" and "" and when I diagnosed the connection with internet explorer it said "The DNS isn't responding" on both Microsoft websites all other websites work fine.

Things Ive tried that did not work:

IMPORTANT: I have recovered my laptop back to an image I made 3 years ago before I knew this would be this hard to fix.
The Microsoft fix it tool gives me error 80072EE7
updated some drivers
Went to "services.msc" and checked that background intelligent, windows update, and workstion were started and automatic.
I did a full scan with malware bytes program and found nothing.
I changed around the (TCP/IPv4) on my internet connection to the opendns and googledns adresses. could not change on the (TCP/IPv6) said invalid address.
Ran ccleaner program to fix any registry problems there might be.
tried about all the Microsoft support links I could find that looked like they might help
talked to Microsoft support
cursed at laptop
My PC is a Toshiba laptop running genuine windows 7 home premium 64 bit

Some extra info if needed:The whole reason I recovered to image was because the PC was just cluttered/unorganized with stuff over the 3 years I've had it when I saw an error with windows update I thought a recovery to image would just fix that but anyways before I recovered to image I did see the last windows update was like 2/16/2013 or 2/26/13 I didn't know this at the time but it hasn't been working for like 2.5 months now. I don't know what happened maybe I picked some virus some where tho I'm really careful about what I download. Also I have always used been using trend micro antivirus paid version.

Preferred Solution: Windows update completely stopped working, unknown error 8024402C

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My friend has been having a remarkable problem with updating his device.
He has been unable to install Windows updates since 2012 as I can see.
Windows updates always gives him error 8024402C

We have tried A LOT, but nothing worked so far:

We tried this, from the official Windows site:
Windows Update error 8024402C - Windows Help

We tried by disabling antivirus and firewalls.
We tried editing the registry keys AUoptions et cetera (the ones for the Windows update settings)
We tried the Windows-updates-reset tool from this forums (by Brink)
We did some virus scans.
We tried the Microsoft Fixit tool.
<and some other things>

What we haven't tried yet is messing with internet/LAN options, but I'd like to have more information/feedback on that before we start.

We'd like to thank anyone who can help us out for their time and effort.

Hello all
I have a problem running updates for Vista 32 Business version. Every time I attempt to run updates I get error code 8024402C. I have researched this thru every post I can find and have tried every suggested solution. I have all firewalls turned off, antivirus turned off, tried safe mode downloaded readiness tool and installed but nothing seems to work. I can't update. I also am unable to download a particular program that installs from the internet. I need this particualar program for my job but an unable to download it, starts but then states it fails. I am connected directly to internet at home thru router, no proxy. Any new suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys,

I've been unable to update windows 8 pro via WSUS since I upgraded my Samsung series 7 slate from Win 7 Pro. It used to work fine with Win 7 Pro. The server still thinks the Slate is a Win 7 Pro machine with latest updates before I did the upgrade so it seems to be some sort of communication issue.

I'm attached to a domain running on a Win SBS 2011 server, which I have admin rights to. I'm no expert with WSUS on either the server or client side.

I've done all the steps from Windows Update Posting Instructions - Windows 7 Help Forums and have attached my CBS logs.

Everything ran fine and completed with the only problems being the SFC scan fixing a corrupted file.

The error code I get in windows update is 800B0001 - Windows Update ran into a problem if I check for updates across the VPN and I get Code 8024402C if I run update without the VPN, but connected to the web. This is the same if I try it from within the LAN at home with the server.

The Check online for updates from Microsoft Update works fine, though I don't seem to be getting updates for Office 2013 (though it could just be that there aren't any). In any case this isn't automatic, and I'd prefer to get it running automatically using WSUS if possible.

Thanks for any help

Answer:Windows update error 8024402C

You do have to update WSUS to support Windows 8 devices. Have you done that?

I have a Visa Home premium desktop and am getting Windows Update error 8024402C when ever I try to run automatic updates. I first noticed this problem because my AVG would not update and when I looked into my Security center I also found that Windows Denfender was also not updating. I then thought to try running Windows update and that is when I got this error. In both cases, (AVG and Windows Update) the help directs to allow SVCHOST, or AVGINST.EXE to access the internet. I then turned off the windows firewall and connected my cable directly into my dsl router, bypassing my router, this did not help. I then thought Virus, so I checked how old my definitions are on both AVG and Windows Defender, and both were not more than three weeks old, so I ran scans using both and neither of them found anything. My IE LAN settings are already set to automaticly detect, and just to be sure, I unchecked clicked OK and then rechecked it, did not help. I also checked the Application and System logs and all I found was that my Search index was currupted, so I rebuilt the data and that did not help either. I also read all the other forum's relatlating to this topic and none of those ideas worked either.
I am stumpted, Please help

I've followed all of the online Microsoft recommendations and nothing seems to have fixed the issue - the hot fx tools seemed to fix something but once ran again they fixed something different? Been having the problems since getting the computer in October 2012. No issues with SURT installed normally so i'm at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:8024402C Windows Update error

Hello Sarah and welcome to the forums

Your CheckSUR log is showing a few missing files from your computer, so lets fix those and see where it leaves us.

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Please download the following file,, and extract this to the root folder of your primary drive (usually C:\) so that the folders have the structure: C:\Packs\Windows... etc.

Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

robocopy C:\Packs C:\ /E /IS
Then re-run the SURT and post the CheckSUR.persist.log please:

Edit: I have asked a staff member to remove your .docx attachment as one of the screenshots has your gmail address in the tab name. If you hate spam as much as I do, it's best not to post it online!

Hi Seven Forums

My dad has a desktop that has had the age old update error 8024402C for Windows 7 for more than 6 months now. We have tried many many things, including all the usual recommendations:

We tried by disabling antivirus and firewalls.
We tried editing the registry keys AUoptions et cetera (the ones for the Windows update settings)
We tried the Windows-updates-reset tool from this forums (by Brink)
We did some virus scans.
We tried the Microsoft Fixit tool.

We followed the instructions of 'Windows Update posting Instructions' and here are the answers:

Step 1: Did that, the error was not fixed.

Step 2: The SFC scan told us there were some corrupted files that could not be repaired. See details in the CBS.log I have attached.

Step 3: Windows Update error 8024402C (or 0x8024402C)

Step 4: log file attached here:

Hope this is of some help, really hope we can get a good solution for this and avoid buying new OS.

Thank you in advance

Hello. It appears I'm unable to update my Windows Home Premium 64bit.

It's a problem I've had for a long time, and stupidly enough, forgot about. I just recently noticed
again that my pc never has Windows Updates, and when I tried to click the Windows Update button,
I get: Windows Update encountered and unknown error. Code 8024402C

Screenshot of the error:

Zipped CBS folder:

Also of note: I've experienced a startup issue twice now this week. Windows appeared to be unable
to start up, and I had to use Startup Repair. Might be related.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Answer:Instant Windows Update error 8024402C

There are no significant errors in either CBS or CheckSUR logs - but the older CBSPersist logs are almost a year old, which would tend to indicate that the system hasn't been working properly during that period.

This is a relatively rare error, and so far we've been unable to find a root cause - or a solution.

Windows update has not been able to install new updates for a couple of weeks. I first noticed this after getting a notification in my task tray saying that updates could not automatically install. However, updates will not manually install either.

I get the error "Windows Could not Search for New Updates" and error code 8024402C. (See attached screenshot).

I followed all the instructions in the Windows Update Posting Instructions Thread and have also attached my error log.

Please let me know what can be done to restore automatic updates. Thanks!

Answer:Windows Update Failed: Error 8024402C

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.
If it still fails, please post an MGADiag report - it may show what the problem is, even if the tool isn't strictly applicable here.
Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.
Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

thank you!!!!

Answer:Windows wont update error-8024402C

I've hit this error several times in the past year. The easiest way to fix this is to let Windows fix itself.

1. Go to Administrative Tools/Services and find the Windows Update service. Stop it.
2. Go to C:\Windows\ and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder to something like SoftwareDistribution.old
3. Restart the Windows Update service.
4. Click the Check for Updates button on the Windows Update screen.
5. Windows will perform the check - it may take some time, so leave it running. Eventually it will successfully complete.
6. You can then delete the SoftwareSistribution.old folder.

The last Windows Update I was able to successfully download was on March 16.  Since then, it fails almost immediately with an error code of 8024402C.  Underneath that it says that the last update date was Never.  I tried just running one tiny 300KB update with the same results.
At that time I tried to scan my Dell e6410 with Microsoft Security Essentials, but it wouldn't update either.  I finally was able to manually download updates.
Neither MSE nor MalwareBytes can find anything wrong.
Chkdsk completed normally.
System File Checker completed OK.
The links to GMER from this forum wouldn't load the page.
The C:\ drive is only 1% fragmented, which in my mind doesn't justify the risk of running a defrag.
And this is the weirdest part:  When I attempt to restart the Windows Defender service, it stops itself.

Anyone else getting the 8024402c error while trying to update? All the machines in my shop are getting this error as well as 6 machines I am working on at the moment. Both Windows 7 and 8.1 are failing with the error

Found this on Perhaps it is Frontier that's the issue but would like to know if it is others as well.

Answer:Windows 7 Update Servers down? Error 8024402c on 7 machines today

I have several machines that give error 8024402C on Frontier DSL. I thought at first it was my laptop with a problem and I tried all kinds of fix it stuff. Now other machines behind the same router are giving the same message.

None of the machines that fail will check for updates. If they have an update waiting they will install it. The Microsoft Security Essentials won't download updates either.

I just figured something out while posting: I have one machine that works, the only difference I found was the DNS server. My router was set to: which is Frontier DNS. The machine that works had an OpenDNS IP's set. I changed one of the laptops to open DNS IPs and and it is getting updates just fine.

So Frontier has a DNS server problem. Swicth to OpenDNS and forget about it!

I try to resolve my own issues and normally do. However, this error message has gotten the better of me so far.

Have tried various solutions posted about this error message, from registry to firewall. None work so far.

I have enclosed the notepad containing the contents of the diagnostic tool report.

If anyone has a few moments to take a glance and give me there opinion I would be grateful.

Greetings!Although I only recently noticed the magnitude of the problem, all updates of my 32-bit version of Windows Vista have failed for the last two months. The only attempted installations were Definition Updates for Windows Defender, and each resulted in a Code 8024402C error. Following instructions in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, I reset my proxy server through the command prompt (netsh winhttp reset proxy, net stop wuauserv, net start wuauserv). However, my current WinHTTP proxy is set to "Direct access (no proxy server)" and it therefore seems to have had no effect. I have also enabled "Automatically detect (LAN) settings" in Internet Explorer, but this did not resolve the issue either.I suspect this may have something to do with a scareware program I was sucked into installing a while ago (I do not remember what exactly it was but it did warn me, among other things, about a particularly high internal temperature). Once I realized what it actually was, I uninstalled it and cleared all the suspicious files I could find from my hard drive. Despite my efforts, unfortunately, Internet Explorer began to act strangely, with the IE window and snatches of what seemed like online streaming radio loading randomly and spontaneously. I uninstalled and reinstalled IE, which seemed to make the streaming go away, except IE still sometimes tries to flood my screen with pop-ups all pointing to the URL hxxp://bl8yl8rahh6lii1eudy5zif8/.I wanted to run a scan wit... While trustedinstaller and wuauserv are consuming 95% of the cpu and the update page green bar is looking, my ISP activity status shows that only a few hundred bytes are being sent/received to/from the MS update server. After a few minutes, I get error code 8024402C MS list of error codes says 'the proxy server or target server name can not be resolved.
Now, don't know if this is just a coincidence but I went to 'resource monitor' to check cpu usage, and I right clicked on trustedinstaller and reset stop/start. Opened update page and clicked check for updates. I'm a very happy person. Update checked, found the Aug 9 updates, loaded and installed. And the six GWX that were deleted using the fixit were not included on the list.

Windows Movie Maker, which came with MS Vista, simply stopped working one day. I tried to open it and I get a pop up that says "Unspecified Error." I know that is not much to go on. I don't think I did anything to prompt this such as do an update or install new hardware.

In an attempt to fix the problem, I did an MS update. It didn't help.

My computer is an HP Pavilion Slimline. My processor is an AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ (2 CPUs), ~2.5GHz. I have 2G of RAM.

Any help would be appreciated.

I spent a couple of days messing around with this. Running an out-of-the-box new Compaq with Vista home basic, nothing installed yet, windows update would stop and message the 8024402c error. There is alot of help for this issue. I learned how to set a proxy, import the proxy unto my netsh>winhttp>; how to set the BITS and folder settings etc etc.

what i did not try until the third day was to TURN OFF the firewall. All i did was turn off the windows firewall and update worked fine. Same with defender, all good.

sometimes the simple answers are more perplexing. thanks you to all who post here so i thought maybe i can return the favor to someone.

You can download the SP2 manually from the Microsoft webpage

Here choose the right (32bit or 64bit) SP2 for the system you are using.
You can save this on USB memory stick and can install this from USB flash memory stick on your computer.

Hello and Welcome -
Here are some known articles for you to start with -
What is the Knowledge Base(KB) article number(s) of the failing Windows Updates?
This issue might be caused by a program running on the computer that's preventing Windows Update Services (SVCHOST) from accessing the Internet, if computer is connected to a network at work or an incorrect Domain Name System (DNS) setting for the network connection can also cause this error.

I reccently noticed that my scheduled tasks were no longer running. I tried to bring up the task scheduler and it said the service was not running. I checked the service and sure enough, it was not running. I tried to start it and it failed because the windows event log service, which is a dependency, was also not running. I tried to start the event log service, and gave the error above in the subject line.
The event log service uses a log on of "Local Service". There are other services that use the same log on and they start up with no problem. I have searched the internet for a solution to this and have tried several things I found with no luck. One was to run SFC, another was to delete the Windows/Logs and Windows/System32/Logfiles folders so they would be re-created on startup. I also tried subinacl to reset the ACLs on registry branches and the subfolders of %SystemDrive% as recommeded in another forum.
I am running Vista Home Premium and all the latest updates have neen applied. Anyone have any further ideas? (short of re-installing Vista).

Answer:Event Log stopped working - Error 1747 : The Authentication Service is Unknown

The official recommended solution i got from opening my case was to format and reload Vista.  I offered to send them an image of my pc to troubleshoot the problem themselves but they never took me up on the offer.
3 days of downtime was too much so i reloaded the OS.  Not an acceptable solution but i had no choice.

My windows 7 pro machine has recently stopped doing updates. The initial error I was getting was 80244019. That was with my DNS pointed at opendns. After pointing my dns at google. I now receive the 8024402C error when trying to update. I have done many troubleshooting steps but cannot seem to nail down why this happened or how to fix it. I have had no sign of infections or other strange behavior. Have ran many scanners but found nothing.
A couple of the troubleshooting steps I've done is to run the microsoft windows update troubleshooter, sfc /scannow, and ran the - windows update repair tool.

installed windows 7 sp1 from dell restore cd onto dell laptop.
have all drivers installed.
have reinstalled from restore cd 3 times now, I continue to get error code 8024402C when trying to do windows update. I have tried leaving it on fully automatic update, the no updates do manually setting, and everything in between.
IE11 and firefox get on the web with no problem, the only other software installed is security essentials and this failed update happens before installation of that. I am positive no software installed afterwards is causing this problem, as i have done re-installation of windows 3 times now including blanking the hard drive.
this last time i have manually downloaded and installed IE11 and .net 4.5.
I try the microsoft windows automated update troubleshooter which downloads windowsupdatediagnostic.diagcab. It reports:

1) windows update error 0x8024402c(2015-03-22-T-01_36_33P) - not fixed.
2) service registration is missing or corrupt - fixed.
3) problems installing recent updates - fixed.
4) problems installing recent updates - fixed.

I go into the detailed report for the above, it shows everything fixed in green including the (1) that says not fixed, and doesn't allow me to do anything else.
the other microsoft troubleshooters i've ran all say no problems detected.
what do i do from here?
the few other things i've found online i've checked, settings are already that such as internet options lan settings automatically detect.

I am using Windows XP SP3. On shutdown of my laptop I received a message about Microsoft Updates to install and computer would shutdown when finished installing. An hour later the updates still had not finished installing so I shut down my laptop manually.

When I turned on my laptop I received a message stating could not find C:windows/system 32/ juschd.exe.bat file, however, computer continued to boot up and all appeared well.

I then tried to update McAfee and the Security Center was not able to update so I type in the address bar of Internet Explore and Internet Explore was not able to display the page. I also found I could not get to any site with "McAfee" in the address.

I called McAfee and after a hour they said I need to call a different department and that there would be an additional charge.

So I decided to try and fix this on my own. Researched and found that this might be a MTU size error so made registry entry of hkey_local_machine\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\Ndiswan

This did not work. Then read to uninstall McAfee. So I uninstalled McAfee including showing all folders and files and then deleting them. Needless to say this did not work. I still could not visit the McAfee websites.

Then I found this forum and did some more reading. Wish I had found this forum first.

Hello, if someone could help me solve this problem it would be fantastic.

About three weeks ago, my laptop froze so I switched it off and on. When it started back up, the audio was gone without a trace. Spotify tells me "There is a problem with my sound card". This has happened once or twice before a while back, but was always solved by just restarting my computer. This time that doesn't work. Realtek High Definition Audio is what I have, and my soundcard is built-in. Since this happened I've had so sound what so ever, and I've been using my phone for sound which is very inconvieniant. I need my sound back on my laptop for my studies.

I have tried almost everything I can think of. I have read many questions online from people who seem to be having the same problem as me, or a very similar problem, but all of their solutions which seem to work do not work for me.

I have tried doing a system restore, which failed. I have a HP laptop, and I even called both the Microsoft and HP helplines for assistance but to no avail. They didn't seem to know what the issue was, and said they would call me back but never did.

I'm not too tech savvy, so I don't know much about these kind of things but I have tried updating all the drivers, however Windows tells me that they are all up to date and working properly. However, sound isn't on anything, even YouTube videos which crash after a couple of seconds of playing.

I have tried restarting Windows Audio, which hasn... Read more

I'm not even sure if this is the right place to post this but if I hadn't shaved my head, I would have been ripping my hair out by now.

I used a "mass storage device" for my SD card to put pictures from my camera onto my PC. This always worked fine until that one fateful day... I plugged it in and a bobble came up saying it exceeded the limit the device. Didnt know what this meant since I honly had a few pictures on the card. I removed it, and put it in again, this time it sorta freaked and the bubble popped up twice, I tried removing it again, but it wasnt responding and eventually froze my computer, so I pulled out the device and rebooted.
Upon restart i noticed that the device wasn't being read at all when i plugged in...
so I went to check the device manager...but the mouse wasn't working, or keyboard, or anything else i tried to plug into the USB ports.

device manager says "device is working properly" for all 5 ports, but no device ever gets read when i plug it in. no light on the device comes on, no bubble, no nothing.

I deleted the USB root hubs and restarted, they reinstalled, but no devices work.
I went into power management and made sure that "allow my computer to shut this device off to save power" was OFF... still no luck.

I ran some Belarc Advisor on my computer and it recognized all the USB ports.

I don't know what else to do
..can anyone help??

Hey, my problems started a long time ago, actually, but always seemed to go away in a while, making me forget about them. Now they're ALL back with a vengeance.

1) A while ago, 2 weeks after I upgraded my drivers to 257.21, I started having some serious issues, like my computer would randomly freeze up, to the point where even keyboard inputs and mouse inputs wouldn't work. And what led me to believe it was a graphics issue, was that the screen would flicker, just ONCE really quickly, and then it'd be frozen. It happened usually only when starting a program like VLC or Mozilla Firefox. The computer would freeze completely, sometimes responding for a second before freezing and flickering again, and hence would be completely unusable. I finally got rid of the issue, by rolling back to the previous version of drivers, which miraculously worked.
2) I then upgraded, much later, to 258.96 . Things were fine, I guess, but then a week or so ago, I got a BSOD, that said the problem was with my nv4_disp.dll driver file. I looked it up, and it seemed to be a driver related issue, which could be resolved by re-installing the drivers. But doing so didn't help at all. So I upgraded to 260.89, and it gave me the same BSOD, AND another one, this time caused by nv4_mini.sys . I started considering that maybe it wasn't the drivers that were the problem, but my card...

I can't give much more information than this but my computer has just stopped working.

I had owned the PC for less than 2 hours, but while i was installing some programs the computer just goes blank. It appears to be completely dead.

It fails to switch on, the power light indicating it is plugged in does not even glow.

I've no idea what could be wrong or what caused it to just stop but this is rather concerning. The only thing i can suggest is that it was running rather hot, i'd never expected it to get so hot but I assumed this was normal given the processor it is running.

An hour after it originally breaks i have tried to turn on again but to no avail. Does anyone have and suggestions/recommendations as to my next course of action?

I think it?s really not easy to say what the problem could be?
I can only suggest?

According to your message nothing appears on the screen? not even if you would try to boot from the recovery disk or other bootable disks. Is it right?

You could try one procedure;
- Remove the battery and disconnect the AC adaptor from the notebook
- Wait several minutes (~30min)
- try to boot up the machine

Check it out? but if you will be not successful then an hardware malfunction might be the reason for your issue and you should ask the local ASP for the help!

I bought my pc january this year and I have NEVER been able to download windows updates. I cant say that it has been on the top of my to-do-list and I guess that's why its taken so long but my computer keeps stopping, just freezing, or freeze and then the screen turns black or whatever color it fancies (and ill have to reboot and so on), so now I want an end to it, and hopefully installing updates will fix it.

Anyway the settings are set for a schedualed update every day at 03:00 but it never does it and when I try to uptade it by pressing the windows update thing it just gives me the same old message:
Windows could not search for new updates. Error(s) found: Code 8024402C.

Ok guys this problem happened last march/april ish and I tried a number of things at the time to fix the issue but with no luck. I just got done working out of state for the summer and did not have my pc with me so I'm trying to have another go at fixing the problem. Summary of the issue- no problems ever with sound until one day it just stopped working. Both headphones and speakers wouldn't work even if they were plugged in. I wasn't getting any "no audio devices detected" kinds of errors or anything like that. So I tried reinstalling the realtek HD audio drivers (i was just using onboard sound at the time) and no luck. I also tried doing a few system restores to before the issue and that didn't do anything either. Finally I bought a pci-e sound card, a sounblaster cause thats all the local best buy had, installed that and still no luck with either speakers or headphones. Today I tried removing the sound card and using on board audio and still no luck. Audio device manager will recognize that I plug in my headphones into either the front speaker jack or the one on the back but just doesn't produce sound. I even opened up the pc and looked at the connections on the mobo to make sure the ones for audio hadn't come lose and that doesn't seem to be the issue either. Please any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance

Answer:sound stopped working completely, headphones and speakers

Post a screenshot of the Device Manager, Sound section, for starters. I'll try to help you.

Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

When you had the SoundBlaster installed, you need to disable the integrated (Realtek) audio so there are no conflicts. Also, you would need to disconnect the front panel headset/mic connection to the motherboard and connect it to the SoundBlaster to have the front panel jacks work. The SoundBlaster would have needed to be set as the default playback device, instead of Realtek if it was still enabled.

Today I received the X100e in the mail. Initially, I couldn't be happier with it. After just 30 minutes, though, I noticed that both the Trackpoint and the Trackpad had stopped working. I tried Fn+F8, but it gives me an error message saying that the UltraNav driver is not installed, even though it is. I've tried everything up to this point: reinstalling the drivers, rolling back to older drivers, and even doing a factory restore, but I've had no such luck. The Device Manager indicates that the UltraNav is connected and working properly, even though I'm getting no response from the Trackpoint, Trackpad, or any of the buttons. I have no options for them in the Mouse Settings or in the BIOS. I'm just assuming that they went dead, but I want a second opinion before I try to send this thing back. Any suggestions?

Answer:New X100e Trackpoint and Trackpad stopped working completely

Anyone? Please, guys. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The touchpad/Trackpoint worked literally for only 30 minutes before they stopped responding completely. No spills, no drops, they just quit working. It seems ridiculous that they would just go dead so quickly. I guess it's also worth noting that any USB mouse that I plug in works just fine.

Hi,I'm running a T61 (8892-02U), with XP SP3.  All's been stable for about a year. Within the last month my FN (Function) key became more and more sporadic.  I typically only used it in conjunction with the PgUp key to control the keyboard light, and Home/End for screen brightness and F7 for entering projector mode. Sometimes when I held it down, pressing the the second key would produce the correct response, other times it wouldn't.  Finally it stopped working entirely. I haven't modified the program set or turned off features (that I know of). I can initiate presentation director by running the executable.  I really miss the ability to dim the screen.Anyone else having the same problem?  Have I inadvertently turned it off somehow?  I thought it was hardwired. Is there any way I can test if the key contacts are still good (besides using it in conjunction with the aforementioned keys)?Does anyone have a cure? Thanks!

Have you checked the device manager? Is the sound card recognized properly?

Maybe you should try to update the sound driver. You can find it on the Toshiba website: => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers

Have you checked if the sound is only muted? You can do this with FN+ESC.

Answer:Windows upate problem code 8024402c Error

Try this:

Quote: might need to set Internet Explorer to automatically detect local area network (LAN) settings so Windows Update can go online to obtain updates. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Open Internet Explorer by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Internet Explorer.
2. Click the Tools button, click Internet Options, click the Connections tab, and then click LAN settings.
3. Under Automatic configuration, select the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.

System: Windows Vista

In the past week I have been experiencing difficulty in updating windows. Sometime "Windows Installer Module stopped working" pops up and other times "windows hosts file stopped working." I have tried various fix-it solutions with no luck (i.e. Fixit, SFC /SCANNOW, start and restarting installer). I would appreciate help.

Answer:Windows update not working and windows Installer Module stopped working.

copy what's the Quote box below

msiexec.exe /unregister
msiexec.exe /regserver
regsvr32 /s msi.dll
net start "windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ics)"Click to expand...

now open Notepad and Paste the above into the text-field.
Save (file>save) this as All files, and name it repairmsi.bat
Note: the .bat part is very important. Make sure you aren't saving it as a .txt document.

Now run this .bat file and see if the problem persists.

80070002 error code.

There is a good workaround described in troubleshooting that error code, but it does not solve the problem.

There is also a good page at Microsoft with instructions on working around the problems, but those instructions do not solve the problem.

I searched here and found no references to "windows update" or "update." That surprised me; maybe I should have tried advanced search.

Anyway, I'm wondering if any others with W7 build 7000 have encountered this issue and if so if they've resolved it.

Hello Spider...

Have you tried this fix? It's not for the exact error code, but it might help if you haven't.
Open a Command Prompt as Administrator
Type reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions /va /f and press enter.
Try Windows Update again, without restarting. If it is the fix, it will work.

I took my Acer E1-572 into the Acer agents to have my HHD password reset (I had a major problem). They deleted the password and reinstalled Windows 8. However they seem to have installed 8.1 instead of 8. I now have the message SecureBoot isn't configured correctly and Windows Update refuses to install 4 updates including KB2919355
I have run Windows Tweaking Tool and SFC.exe but this hasn't fixed the problem.
Can you suggest anything else?
Thank you.

Windows Update for Vista has stopped working and hangs when looking for new updates.

Also the computer is perpetually busy even when not connected to the internet with 50% CPU usage. Stopping the service "wuauserv" (connected to Windows Update) in Task Manager temporarily stops the problem.

Some time back I limited the amount of spare hard disk space Windows could use to economize on available disk. Could this have had anything to do with it?

Looking in Google I have not been able to find an easy fix for the problem in Vista.

Answer:Windows Update has stopped working

Although I hadn't used Windows Vista since 2009, several people here were having problems with installing it and updating it, so I decided to do some research and then install it and update it.
To make a long story short, these are the steps that I came up with which worked fine and allowed Windows Update to work correctly.

1. Install Windows Vista SP2 64-bit.

2. Install Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2.

3. Install necessary drivers (chipset, graphics, audio, ethernet, etc.).

4. Obtain a connection and activate Windows Vista.

5. Install Internet Explorer 9.

6. Install Internet Explorer 9 cumulative security update (KB3185319).

7. Install the 6 updates at this site in order by KB number.
Don't restart the computer until all 6 updates are installed.

8. Load Windows Update and check for updates.

Since you already have it installed, you can start with step #7.

Just for your information, Microsoft will no longer support and provide updates for Windows Vista after April 2017.
And if you're using the Firefox browser, Mozilla will stop support for Windows Vista after March 2017.

I saw that the last time that updates were installed were 08/27/2010. I searched around and found a post about installing the latest update agent. I did that, rebooted the server, but still this error is there.

One suggestion is to run sfc /scannow, which is in progress as of the time of this post. However, what is the real problem and the real ultimate solution? Thanks! major

The easiest point to start with, silverfish, is probably to check if you have a restore point older than that date.

I made an account specifically to get this question answered. I'm not very tech-savy, and I live in Japan, making it difficult to get professional advice/assistance in person. Please help.
(Apologies if this is the wrong board)

I'll try to be as detailed and concise as possible.

For 6 months or so I was using my neighbor's LAN with no problem. To this day, using other people's internet is no problem. This leaves me fairly convinced that even though my netbook is junk, it isn't the fault of my computer.
Eventually I decided to call up and get my own cable internet put in. Ever since it was put in, I've had problems, and that was over a year ago - I've been able to temporarily resolve problems, but now I've finally been stumped.

The problem originated when I was attempting to download large files (500mb+) and my internet would suddenly crash. Network Diagnostics is useless in this situation, and the only way to resolve the issue was the unplug and re-plug the power to my cable modem. Sometimes I'd have to do this every 2-3 minutes. You can imagine how annoying this would be.
During the time I was connected by LAN and was connected through Ethernet cable.

When I called the ISP, they explained that, from their end it appeared my internet was working fine and that I should just "restart my computer and try again". Further frustration.

Eventually I switched to wireless internet. This didn't change anything. My internet still crashed whenever I used it &... Read more

I have been having problems installing 8 updates since early May 2012. I am getting the error code in the title line.

I have run FixIt, but to no avail. I have also turned off services and rebooted and ran Windows Update and still got this error.

Hi all,
I am having a problem with Windows Update on my computer that just started yesterday.
First, what happened was that it said that I never checked for updates and it also said "Find about more free software from (null)."
What I did was empty the SoftwareDistribution folder and check again, and that worked.
But today, while I was able to install updates yesterday, my computer is telling me that I've never checked for any updates.
I tried emptying and rebuilding SoftwareDistribution again, but that didn't work. I just keep getting error code 8007000E.
I have even tried the Windows Update Troubleshooter, but it said that it didn't fix the error code. I'm still getting error 8007000E.
Nothing is working.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? Of course, this is a very annoying, yet unexpected problem.
(Microsoft even said "Upgrading to Windows 10 is the best way to fix this problem!" I don't know if that's worth it right  now...)
Best regards,

About a week ago I checked via widows update button and downloaded 2 items. Everything worked fine. Now when I go to my windows 98se update in the start menu it connects starts to show the 'Checking for Latest version' page then changes to an 'Administrators Only' and refers to windows 2000 and XP and to contact my administrator. I am not on a network. Also which may be relevent all my Microsoft desktop icons ie works, Briefcase, My Computor, Documents etc were programmed to open as a web page type when clicked. This does happen and shows the horizontal dividing line between the title /description and the actual files but the files do not appear and the picture or logo icon is just a square with a red cross If I go to 'View' I can change it to large or details etc and this then shows the actual files in the folder but that is all. I have always had my folders in web page view but the desktop in windows standard. Would like to get the ability to continue downloading updates if nothing else. Have checked system files for any corruption and windows does not report any. Many thanks to any one who can solve the problem.

I run Windows 7 x64 at home on a decent Core i5 rig. Last night I decided to do a Windows Update and chose to install the security update and I also noticed another little update of about 600KB or so that said something about USB, can't remember exactly.

Well anyway, immediately after the updates were finished installing, my keyboard and mouse refused to respond. Thinking that it was my machine that locked up, I restarted, Windows applied the updates and got to the login screen. I tried to type my password but my keyboard and mouse were still dead. I restarted AGAIN and noticed that the keyboard works fine at the point where I get to choose my OS (I'm dual booting XP and 7 x64).

So I decide to boot into XP and WTF, keyboard and mouse doesn't work there too! Huh..

Then I boot from the Windows 7 DVD and try to roll back to the restore point but that also gave me some arb message like: I need to restart the machine and choose an OS to try to roll back to a restore point. So that didn't work.

Now I'm stuck. I can't get into either OS with a functioning keyboard or mouse.

I tried a PS/2 keyboard and mouse but they're also not responding. Note that the input devices work fine in the BIOS and at the screen to choose the OS, they just die when I get to Windows.

Now, I only tried to fix this problem for an hour last night and it stumped me so I thought I'd post about it here and see if anyone had any more advice for me.

Since it's affecting both OS, I'd be tempted to look at your BIOS settings. See if the USB ports are OS or BIOS controlled (set to OS if possible).

I have a problem with my WUSB54GC linksys Wireless Adapter. Yesterday, I got a pop-up message on the system tray saying I have uninstalled updates. I just ignored it. When I turned off my computer, there's a feature to install the updates automatically while the computer is shutting down. I just let it update while turning off. After updating though, then next time I opened up the computer, my wireless adapter suddenly stopped working. Whenever I try to install it, it just doesn't do anything. I tried to reinstall the program and the drivers to no avail. I uninstalled all the drivers and program and uninstalled the driver from the linksys website. Still nothing. Please help! I really need to get some work done here.

Answer:WUSB54GC stopped working after windows update

I'm assuming XP but this should work for Vista as well. Might be easiest to use system restore, and restore back to yesterday before the updates were iinstalled
Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools -> System Restore

For Vista, click start then enter System Restore in the search box and that should get you there.

Hi there,

Decided to join up here to ask for advice.

I've recently had a string of viruses including " 32 blaster worm" which
Windows defender managed to clear out. I then had the vista recovery virus which hid all my files I had to purchase "spyware doctor" to finally manage to clear that one out.. But ever since then (this was 3 days ago) my computer will not let me open any programs including; iTunes and uninstaller, it just displays the message "xxxxx has stopped working" and or displays the message "the extended attributes are inconsistent"

Any help with this is much appreciated!

When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
Once OTL has completed its first scan it will save notepad copies of the scans in the folder that OTL was started from. Unless set to produce an Extras log it will only produce OTL.txt in subsequent scans.

A copy of an OTL fix log is saved in a text file at

in most cases this will be C:\_OTL\MovedFiles

Please attach both OTL.txt and Extras.txt with your next post for me... Read more

The night before last an automatic Windows update forced a reboot of my X61s. The following morning the wireless LAN was not working. Using the Lenovo Wireless Connection app I verified the radio was on but the LED below the display that comes on when transmitting did not light. When searching for WLAN it comes up with "No Networks Found". I've checked system status and found no issue noted. I've found several ways to turn the radio on and off and always with same result. I'm unable to tell if the update killed the radio or if the hardware just decided to quit working at this particular time. Anyone have any ideas?

My external DVDRW Drive no longer functions after lastest Windows 10 update.  System dosen't recognize the DVD and the Windows Driver installed doesn't recognize the digital signature.  Hard to make dvd's and cd's without the drive.

Answer:external DVD stopped working with Windows 10 update

Although WIN 10 forces mandatory updates and patches, it is now possible to be selective. Suggest you read this article on selective updates.  After reading about,  and downloading the program,  your problem might be fixed.  Please reply back, as this is an issue.

Hello All,
Having an issue with Windows Vista. I keep getting a box that states, Windows Update Module has stopped working. Vista won't complete the updates.
I can dowload updates ( I think ) but they will not install. Searched this forum and didn't see anything close.
Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Windows Update Module has stopped working.

Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box.
Type services.msc
Press Enter.
Locate the Windows Modules Installer service.
Double-click it and make sure it's on Manual, not Disabled.
