How do I mass sort files by Date Modified?

Question: How do I mass sort files by Date Modified?

I would like a folder and everything inside it to be sorted by Date Modified in an Ascending order. Can it be done with of without additional programs?

Preferred Solution: How do I mass sort files by Date Modified?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How do I mass sort files by Date Modified?

Hello.

This should be done by simply clicking Date Modified at the top of the folder window. For ascending order the arrow should be pointed down.

Whenever I open a folder and want to "sort by date (modified)", Windows 7 sorts by descending order. I have to click again to get ascending order (in XP this was not a problem). Is there a registry hack or some other way of getting Windows 7 to sort by (modified) date in ascending order when you click on "sort by date"? Various searches have only come up with bogus or obvious answers (e.g., click again to change order, "group by" (which doesn't maintain setting when reset to "sort by date"), etc.). Thanks for any "real" help.

I am using a program that OCR's a page and then creates a folder for it inside an output folder...
Goes like this:
Input folder -> OCR program -> Output folder -> [Folder just for that document]

I keep the output folder open so that i can see the new folders being created for the OCR records, which i can then drag additional files to that records folder.
Since im dealing with thousands of folders im depending on vista to sort by date modified so that the newest one shows up on top.... But im running into a problem

I've done about 700 records now (700 folders have been created) and for some reason the date modified stopped working. Now the new folder is showing up at the end instead of the beginning. If i hit F5 to refresh the window it move to the top where it should be.... but im going through thousands of records and hitting F5 for every record consumes time and makes room for error.

Why did vista stop sorting by date modified? I didnt change anything, all of the sudden it just stopped being consistent. I can restart the computer and sometimes it will start working properly again for about 30 records, but its not guaranteee.

Please help me fix this, THANKS!

Why can't i see this option? Is there some place i have to enable it? I want to be able to sort my files in explorer by the last date modified. Argg!

Answer:date modified sort in vista

Right click the folder, select properties, select the customize tab (or press Alt-V, "Customize this folder" from inside the folder) and make sure "All items" is selected from the first drop down.

I wish Vista would always just default to the All items view. It selects a bad default way too often.

Hi!
This has been annoying me a lot.
Let's say I have a folder with many files to which I download to.
On XP if I download a new file to it in order to find it the easiest for me is to SORT BY Date Modified and then it will show at the very last file on the list...easy enough.
In comes Vista 64 and that does not work at all...it still shows up somewhere else.
Any ideas?
Thanks

The same feature exists in Vista and Win7. Just be sure to right-click on the headers at the top of ecah olumn to pick the headings you want (be sure to add Modified Date), drag the new header(s) you added to the right position you'd like them -then click on any of them to sort by that column header.

I have a folder of about 20,000 photos from a digicam that I'm organizing for a friend, since I'm rebuilding the system I couldn't bare the mess and had to tackle this too. I've gone through with software to remove the duplicates but now I want to put them into folders labeled by their date created, or date modified. Is there a command for this? Or even a prog.

Answer:Command to sort 20k photos into date modified albums?

I use ThumbsPlus to organize my photos. It has an auto rename feature, so you could sort by date and then rename by year/month or whatever, but it's notsuper automated - you would basically need to rename each months worth of files, which may or may not be a lot of work.

It's not super cheap if all you want to do is rename some files, but I think it has a free 30 day trial.

Every disk and/ or folder when I tick sort by name-ascending the damn thing reverts to date modified-descending if I leave said disk or folder and return. I tried "Enable_Auto_Arrange_in_File_Explorer.bat" and "Reset_Folder_View_Settings_of_All_Folders_to_Default.bat" courtesy of Brink to no avail.

Is there a way to get file explorer back to default sort (by name-ascending) for all disks, folders and sub-folders at once?

It was all fine last week and I've no recollection of playing with any settings. Very frustrating.
Thank You.

Solved by reinstalling. Pity but also got rid of a lot of rubbish.

Hello!
I have been trying to get this done for Windows 10 and wow is driving me crazy. It seems that the tweaks I find work for some folders but not for folders there I have photos which is exactly where I want to be able to do this.
I always have to go through the options and add the Date Modified first. Gets very annoying so maybe some expert out there can tell me how to do this?

Thanks!

I have a mild annoyance in Windows Explorer (on XP) that I have been searching all around to try to find a solution for. It has to do with automatic sorting. Basically, new or modified files to a folder are not automatically sorted until the folder is refreshed.

Say I have all my files sorted by "Date Modified," from top to bottom, and then I open and edit, say, the third file. When I save the file, the "Date Modified" will instantly update. The problem, though, is that the file, despite it now being the most recently modified file, will still remain in the #3 spot until I refresh the list or change the sort order.

The same thing happens if, say, I sort files alphabetically, and then copy a file "Aardvark.txt" to the folder. It won't appear in its rightful place until the folder is refreshed.

I noticed that this problem seems to be fixed in both Vista and Windows 7, but I'm hoping there is a way to address it. I would love to be able to trust the folder's sorting without having to refresh it each time to make sure I have the updated sort order.

Anybody encounter this?

I recently tried to open a document and found that it was filled with symbols looking like a 'y'. I finally determined that I had a large number of similar documents (word, excell, jpegs, publisher files) that were all unreadable.

1. They were scattered in many folders adjacent to readable files.
2. All unreadable files had the modified date of 05/01/2007 3:35 am (any file with another date was readable; any file of any type with this date was not).
3. The word documents of this type were unreadable with 'recovery' software or word's own recovery system.
4. I have had continuously running and updated virus software with daily 'clean' scans.
5. I did a Dell diagnostics on the computer and their extensive hard disk scan - no problems.
6. I do have online back up software but it, unfortunately, backed up the corrupted files since they were "modified."
7. My windows event log doesn't show anything happening at the time of this mass file modification.
8. File names are normal (for example, Letter to JP.doc). All files were created by me.

I can't find anything really similar searching the net or microsoft's knowledge bases. Does this look familiar to anyone? Any ideas to fix? (other than switching to a mac ;-) ) Thanks!

It used to be, you could just sort by modified in tile view and the tiles and folders would have the time stamp on the folder/file icon.It was standard in XP but I cant find a way to bring it back in Win 7.To clarify, "sort by Tiles" then arrange by modified.I need to be able to see the date modified on the files and folders in tile view when sorted by "date modified".Any help is appreciated...Googling brought me nothing :/

I've hit a showstopper in Windows 7 for which I have so far been unable to find a workaround. I maintain my websites by duplicating all updated files in my local public_html directory tree to a new location, and then using FileZilla to upload only those files to the web server. This has always been simple in WinXP :
- use WinZip to archive everything in the directory tree
- open the archive, sort by date, and remove all older files
- select and extract the remaining files to the new location

Unfortunately the new version of WinZip seems to rely on the new "feature" of Windows 7 that copying a file resets its modified date, so this approach is no longer possible. I don't see any way to force it to keep the original modified date of the file in the archive. Things I've tried so far to resolve my problem are :

- RoboCopy
Does not seem to have any way to filter files to be copied by date.

- RichCopy
Looks like it should work, but the GUI selection of include/exclude filters does not work. Everything is copied, regardless of the selection, nor does that selection persist when you save the profile.

- 7-Zip
Can't find any way to hide the directories and show only the files when browsing the archive. Deleting the older files does not remove the no longer used directories. I can't see how to get the files to extract using their internal relative paths -- the dialog box mentioned in the help file does not come up on this machine.

I think what happened. Sunday night began a manual backup by trying to select entire My Docs and copy to laptop DVD R/W drive disk. Computer said it would take 2 days so 35 mins in I cancelled. It said there was a large set of temp files and I could retain or remove, I removed.

Went to bed.

Next day 11:04 am ran a malware prgm called CacheCleaner. Have run it 1000+ times and no issue this time.

Few days later go to access Quicken - no can do. File is damaged. Went to open my budget file in excel, says" file is in a different format than specified by the file extension. ..." Open it anyways, its completely empty. Go to open a MS word doc, cannot open, says there are problems with the contents. PDF problems too.

Every file has been mysteriously updated Date Modified to 1/4/2010 11:04am. None will open. Any file not dated 1/4/2010 11:04am opens fine.

Was there some temp pointer type file created during my aborted backup operation that was then deleted when I emptied my temp files etc when I ran Cache Cleaner.
This is horribly impactful b/c my last backup is old. Please help if you can.....
Thanks

I'm reorganizing my hard drives on my Windows 7 Professional system (because I am filling up one of several).  I've copied a directory structure and files to a different drive, using:

robocopy "F:\Documents and Settings\Dan\Personal" "I:\Personal" /MIR /DCOPY:T.

What I noticed after the copy process is that all the *.exe files have a new "modified" date on the target drive.  It appears the *.js files are likewise adorned with a new "modified" date, too.

Can someone explain what happened and how I might retain the original date/time info on the executable files, please?
Thanks.

Ive got vista x64 and Im tryin to figure out how to sort a folder by the date I DLed the contents. In Xp it was np but I cant seem to get it work in vista. Ive tried Date Received Date Modified Date Taken... everything with Date in the sort type and none of em work they either dont change at all or just end up in abc order. What Im goin for is sorting the contents exactly by date and time of how they ended up in the folder. Any ideas? Also before I forget about it. Ive got a folder on an HDD that wasnt modified when I installed vista I installed vista on a completely new HDD. Now in windows explorer in vista that folder thats on a completely separate drive is missing roughly 100 files completely randomly. Not any specific order I can find to whats missing (date, abc, etc) theyre just not showin up. The file size of the folder doesnt indicate theyve been deleted they just arent showin up.

Help! I am using a Seagate Central 4TB NAS drive attached to my router via Ethernet. It has been working fine so far for all kinds of file activities. But whenever I modify a file in one of its folders, the creation date for the file also updates and is
changed to the same time as the new modified date.
Maybe relevant details:
I can move/copy folders to the drive and they maintain their created dates.
It happens for both a private user share on the NAS and for the Public share on it.
It happens for at least image files and text files.
I am able to edit files across two computers on the network just fine, the create date stays the same.
This happens from a new Windows 10 machine and Vista machine both.
I notice sometimes the date created seems to stay same until I access the file the next time.
I can't update the NAS firmware because of error.

If it could be a permissions problem, I have been unable to change it from:
Everyone: Special Permissions only
nobody (Unix Group\nobody): Special Permissions only
nogroup (Unix Group\nogroup): Special Permissions only
(Those were there automatically, they are not something I manually put there. I get "Access is denied" whenever try to add permissions or change ownership.)

I have Googled many phrases of this problem far and wide and come up with nothing. I really need to save the original create date because that's how I sort them in programs like Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa. Does anyone know what's goin... Read more

Please help with this question about file date-created VS date-modified in Windows 7.

Suppose a file is created at time1.

How come Windows7 reports "date created" as "time1" and "date modified" as "time2" where "time2" is a time earlier than time1?

See the attached file, "WindowsDateIssue201203061503.png", for an example.

Thanks.

-- Mark Kamoski

Answer:file date-created VS date-modified where modified < created

If you (/your computer) have not played with system time:

That means that file is a copy of a file created earlier.

To confirm, find an old file and copy it to another folder/disc.
Check the dates.

This situation can also occur with some archives (depending on your settings).

Every now and then I like to back up my files (which is always a good idea). I want to back up my music library to an external HD since it has greatly expanded in the last few months. For the sake of time saving, I only want to copy the most recent additions, but I can't figure out how to view them as "date modified".I have that as an option at the top of my music folder, but I cannot figure out how to use it. I have choices like "select date or date range", "a long time ago", "earlier this year", etc.. I cannot figure out how to see which ones were within the last few months in descending order. I used to just click on the arrow next to the date modified button and that would switch them between most and least recent. Please help!

Answer:How to view music files as "date modified" Win 7

Windows 7 tries to be helpful when it has a folder with multimedia files, but you can make it behave. Select Details in the View menu and then right click any column header. In the menu that appears, check 'date modified' to show that column, now you can click on that column header to sort them in ascending or descending order. You can drag any column to a new position using the left mouse button. Using the right-click menu you can choose the headings you want.

One problem I've run into ever since I switched over to Vista a while ago is the columns of information it assigns to files.

Like if I open up a folder with a bunch of pictures or videos in it, it might have categories on the top for "Date Taken", "Tags", "Rating", etc.

Those are completely useless for my purposes, but categories like "Date Modified" which is what I usually sort by, isn't a default category for these folders.

I can right click on the bar with the various categories, and Date Modified will usually either be in there or I'll have to click "More" and find it in that list.

That wouldn't be so bad except that it doesn't seem to save those changes; when I go into the folder again later on, it's back to only having mostly useless categories to sort files by.

This can be a nightmare in some folders, like my MP3 folder, where Vista wants to tell me every little detail about every song in there - except for the details I need, like Date Modified.

Manually adding in the Date Modified field every single time has long since gotten very old.

It's a nice concept that it tries to change the categories automatically based on the contents of the folder, but really, how can I change it permanently to the categories I actually want?

Ok I have a problem here. I have lots and lots of favorite files on Internet Explorer. Whenever I want to reference one of those favorite files, I go to my favorites folder in the hard drive and find a specific favorite file throught the date modified tab. I find it easier to find it that way than to find it through the name of the file.

And here comes the problem; I tried to back up my pc, but I aborted the operation because an issue occured. I then went to my favorite folder and somehow all of my "favorites" files now have the same modifeied date. Now I am having a very difficult time finding a "favorites" file that I want to open.

I am wondering if you can undo a modified date to its original date creation? I know, it's an uncommon situation, but it is somehow affecting me!

Answer:date-created VS date-modified on Windows 7

Good question, but it does not effect the performance of the computer.
An explanation could be the DLL file could be updated via a recent Windows update and it was last modified date was inherited from the previous file that has been overwritten.

I'm a professional photographer and have recently begun shooting with two cameras simultaneously at events. They use different file names to avoid duplicate names/confusion, i.e. IMG_175000 and XMG_175000. Often times I'll take a photo with one camera and then take a photo immediately after it with the other camera and I'd like both of these images to be organized in the same subfolder and shown sequentially, but by default Windows Explorer lists all the "XMG_######" photos at the end and the IMG_###### photos at the beginning. I can manually sort each individual folder by going to "Sort by - Date" or even better, selecting "Sort by - More... and putting a check mark next to "Date Taken" so that it shows up in the Sort options (which it doesn't automatically) and then sorting by Date Taken, but since I'm dealing with hundreds of subfolders with hundreds of thousands of photo and video files I'd like a way to do this for all the files in these subfolders that isn't manual.

Is there a way to make Windows Explorer automatically arrange every file (both image and movie files) inside the various subfolders inside one root folder by Date or Date Taken instead of automatically always sorting them by name?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Making files in subfolders sort by "Date" or "Date Taken" by default?

Hello XMGING, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you like, you could set a folder how you like it, then use the method in the tutorial below to apply it to all folders that use the same folder template.

Folder View - Apply to Folders

Hope this helps,

This happens to the Winodws XP Explorer.

Would people out there please explain it to me. And also what I wish to see is the downloaded file creation date which should be identical to the one kept by the hosting web site. Or maybe other ways around

Answer:Why can Last Modified Date and Creation Date be the same

If I understand what your asking:

Quote:

Why can Last Modified Date and Creation Date be the same

They would be the same, for example. You draw a picture in paint, save it and dont edit it again. When you save it you create the file, and seeing you dont edit it the modfication date and the creation date will be the same.

I am not sure if that is possible.

I noticed that the "date modified" on the recovery file in the Recovery d: drive is the date I last had problems and did a recovery install.  Is this field supposed to update to the date of last recovery?  I am just wondering whether that date modified might indicate that it was modified with virus/malware so that recovering would not result in a clean install.  Thank you!

Hello there & Happy New Year.

I have encountered this particular inconvenience on the 2nd day of 2012 while i was transfering photos and files into my PC with Win7.

In my Win7 PC, all files/folders created or modified within Dec'2011 and earlier are now all grouped under as "A Long Time Ago". This happens when I changed the folder to be "Group by Date" or "Group by Date Modified" with a combo of "Sort by type". I tried sorting in different ways of view to see if I can get it back to what it should be. Then i realised even folder newly created on 25 Dec 2011 is also grouped as "A Long Time Ago" too. I am not sure if this is an intended feature.

The only helpful part is that i will still see the newer files in chronological order if I sort by date modified on top of group by date modified.

I have been using this setting for folder view even for Win XP. As for Win XP, i will get "Yesterday", "Last Week", "Last Month", "Last Year", "Two Years Ago" and ultimately the whole chunk of much older files under "A Long Time Ago". Such perfect chronological order.

I tried to google for a while and not much of returns to this issue I am having. Perhaps majority of people does not group their files/folders in such way. But for me, I like the way how it was displayed that I know i have edited/created/moved whichever files/folders last year, the previous month or ... Read more

Help! This should be easy but I can't get it to work.

I have a report that must group by Trip# and sort by ascending activity date all of the various activities that took place on multiple days of the trip.
Further, the trip with the earliest date must come first regardless of the Trip#.
I've accomplished getting the earliest starting date trip first and grouping its detail with a unique string made up of the earliest date of each trip formatted to YYYYMMDD+Trip#. This prints a trip total and works fine.

But the daily activity for the trip is out of date sequence.
Adding a Date field to the 'Sorting and Grouping' insists on breaking on and printing a sub-total for each of the trips activity dates.
Without the sorting & grouping by date the trip records are out of sequence even though the data source query is sorted ascending by activity date.

(see attachments that show the above)

The only solution I can think of is to create a sub-report sorted by activity date.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Hi,
I need help with the following problem: Using MS cabarc.exe, I create an archive containing several files. Some of those files were last modified over a year ago, and others were last modified only a day ago. When I then use cabarc.exe to extract the files, I've noticed that the "Date Last Modified" property of the files created recently has changed by only one or two seconds. The "Date Last Modified" for the older files does not change at all.

For example, the following two files were added to the archive on 01/22/05:
textfile-1.txt => Date Last Modified = 03/05/04 12:15:22 pm
textfile-2.txt => Date Last Modified = 01/10/05 09:20:10 pm

textfile-1.txt => Date Last Modified = 03/05/04 12:15:22 pm
textfile-2.txt => Date Last Modified = 01/10/05 09:20:12 pm

I can't find anything really similar searching the net or microsoft's knowledge bases. Does this look familiar to anyone? Any ideas to fix? (other than switching to a mac ;-) ) Thanks!

What are the extension of those files ? In order to see the file extensions you have to open windows explorer (or my computer), go to tools => folder options => view and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types".

In Excel 2003, I am trying to get the date of a cell in Column R to update when I modify any cells in the row (columns A-Q). Right now I have put this code in the "View Code" option when I right click on the worksheet tab (from this forum):Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal Target As Range)Range("R" & Target.Row) = DateEnd SubI then close the code popup window, save the design worksheet which appears and returned to my spreadsheet, test this and it doesn't work even though the code appears when right clicking the worksheet tab and then choosing view code. What am I doing incorrectly?

Answer:Show date last modified for any cells in row

It's not clear to me what sheet tab you are clicking on but any Worksheet event code has to be placed in the sheet module for the sheet (and every sheet) where you want this to happen.Worksheet event macros are not global, they are Worksheet specific. If you want the date to appear in Sheet1 Column R, then you need to right-click the Sheet1 tab and paste code into the pane that opens. The only other reason that I can think for the code not to work for you (it works for me) is if you have some code that has turned events off.If the line:Application.EnableEvents = Falsehas been run in any macro while the current Excel session is open, then no event code will fire since the execution of that line impacts the application, i.e. Excel.Quitting Excel and restarting it or running the following line will enable events again:Application.EnableEvents = TrueNote: if you have a Macro that runs the "False" line at Excel start-up, then even quitting and restarting Excel won't help since the code will disable events as soon as Excel starts.Click Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.

This question pertains specifically to a video that is being downloaded.

What is being done to the video in order for the file modified date to change?

From other forums ive gathered that it might be Windows Media player modifying some meta data automatically.

Does this modification happen to files that have previously been played in Windows Media Player?

Or can you have video files anywhere on your computer and WMP will modify the video file at least once after the original download occured(Even if you haven't
viewed this video yet)?

I am trying to see if this information can tell me if someone has viewed the videos that have been downloaded or not.

I have 4 videos downloaded from within 15 minutes of each other. Each of the 4 videos have the modification time the same or 1 second difference.  So
it does seem to be something WMP is automatically modifying something.  So if anyone could shed some light onto the process that would be great.

The format for all the videos that have a modified date after a created date are, .wmv , .mpg , .mp4 , .vk.flv , .flv .

Any Information or feedback would be greatly appreciated

Date and Time Stamp code is as followsSub CommandButton1_Click()Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1).Value = NowEnd Subthis code when assigned to a button of checkbox will enter a timestamp and date stamp starting at Cell A2 clicking it again puts one in Cell A3 and so on. What I want to modify is to make this code reference an activecell so say I am clicked in Cell D22 and then Click date and timestamp button I want the date and timestamp to show in that cell.Anyone know how to modify this to make that work?

Sub CommandButton1_Click()
Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1).Value = Now
End SubObviously a macro with a single line of code is not that hard to read, but longer macros benefit by having the indents retained when posted. As for your question, this syntax determines the next empty cell Column A:Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Offset(1)If you simply replace that with ActiveCell, the code will put the timestamp in the active cell.Sub CommandButton1_Click()

I've tried resetting individual folders and all folders within Explorer (XP Sp1) and

I wouldn't mind, but I always have to change to detail mode, right click the headings and
add Date Modified, when I want to sort my files with the newest first or last. Is there a
way to edit file type profiles using the registry or third party program or other tweak?

"date modified" field does not update when files are replaced in a zip folder while running Windows 7 64-bit.

Data files are stored in zip files and utilized daily. At the days end the files are replaced with the most current revision. The updated file displays the correct "date modified", however when the filed is transfered into the zip file, the "date modified" displayed within the zip file does not update.

I don't have this problem with Windows XP or 2000. Is there some hidden setting that is needed for Windows 7 to recognize file modification dates just as every version prior?

It becomes frustrating that Microsoft continues to add nice new fancy operating features, but yet continuously fails to ensure the basic functions are maintained.

Ok, I tried IE7 for the first time recently and found a horrible bug that I can't find a reasonable solution to.

It has something to with IE7 (and IE8) updating the URLs "date modified" time stamp if the URL has a favicon.

Example :

goto this URL :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft

Drag the URL to your desktop or any folder. Note the date modified time stamp. A minute later, double click on the URL and let it open. Now look at the time stamp again. It will be automatically updated because this website has a favicon. IE7 will automatically update the date modified time stamp whether you want it to or not.

THIS IS A PAIN IN THE BEHIND if you have lots of URLs sorted by date modified.

The ONLY solution I have found is to change the properties of EVERY URL to "read only". This will prevent the time stamp from being overridden.

There has to be a better way than having to resort to this for every bookmark or URL.

This "feature" of IE7/IE8 really sucks and there should be an option to disable it.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:IE7 / IE8 bookmark date modified bug - ANY IDEAS?

I'm using IE7 and it's not doing what you're saying. The date modified/created/accessed date stays the same every time I reopen it after dragging the link you posted above to the desktop. Are you sure it's not being updated by your anti-virus software?

If you have IE8 set to delete your history/flush the cache every time you exit, that might also be a problem if it has to retrieve the icon every time. Sounds like a KAC problem.

Hi! First off, I kinda suck with computers, so I'm sorry if I make this more difficult than it should be. Also, this is kind of a silly question.
When I used to download images, my computer would automatically add a 'date modified' thingy to it, so that I could sort through them easily by setting the folder to be arranged by the date I saved it. But it suddenly stopped adding the date modified- or any other properties- to anything I right-click-save, so that I have to search through my (admittedly large) folder and manually add the date. Is there any way I could set it back to automatically doing this? Thanks!

Answer:Won't automatically add 'Date modified' to downloads

Open a folder with the images> Right click a blank area and chose Sort by> Scroll down to More at the bottom> Scroll down to Date modified and put a check mark next to it> Now click on the Date modified text itself and on the right side, Move up should now be clickable> Click on Move up

This will move Date modified to the top of the list. See if your old behavior is now back.

My computer was recently infected with malware (I believe Vondo). I was able to successfully remove the malware with SuperAntiSpyware. However, I am now unable to open any of my Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files. I either receive an error message that says "file is not in a recognizable format" or a bunch of jibbersh and the program asks me to select the correct text encoding type. Under file details, all of the affected files were "modified" on the same date/time, presumably by the malware.

Has anyone encountered this problem before or have any suggestions on what I should do next? Thanks,

Answer:Unreadable Documents With Same Modified Date

Though SAS removes a lot of Vundo malware it seldom can remove all. I suggest you post a Hijack This log.Post a Hijack This log in the Hijack This Forum by following the directions in the link below. Hi guys,

Something weird is happening. Some of my movie files (file type doesn't matter) became corrupted; when I play them in VLC they cause errors, they were just fine before and nothing has changed. I noticed in Explorer that these files have no Date Modified field, it's simply blank; I've never seen anything like that.

I did a chkdsk on the drive and see no errors. What could it be ?

Thanks.

Answer:Blank Date Modified Field ?

VLC should rebuild the Index, but that is a temporary fix. Depending on what format they are, there is "DIVFIX" and "Meteor MKV repair" you can try to run the faulty content through which of those is appropriate, you'll have to google it, cant remember the links.

We're performing a directory inventory at the office that requires us to get rid of any directory that hasn't had a file modified since 1/1/08. However, the date in the 'Date Modified' column will always stay the same as the day the folder was initially created. For example, if I made a folder named "Joe's Docs" on 01/02/07 but just added a file on 7/8/10, the 'Date Modified' on "Joe's Docs" will still read 01/02/07.

Is there a program out there that will change the date modified to the most recent file in all of the subfolders? The best way I can describe it is to draw a short diagram of the theoretical directories with their dates modified below them.

Code:
Joe's Docs
07/08/10
| |
| |
Folder A Folder B
07/08/10 03/05/08
| | |
| | |
File A File B File C
07/08/10 02/01/08 03/05/08

When I used XP Pro I used to download images from the net to a folder on my desktop which I could then sort by "Date Modified" (when viewing"Details"). I could then go back to thumbnail views and the most recently downloaded file was at the top of the display.

I do not appear to have this column in Windows 7 and my downloads are all over the place - and hence hard to find.

How do I restore this function please?

So, your downloads are going to various folders? Are you using IE to download, or what? Win 7 has a standard Downloads folder. Normally, downloads initiated via web browser would go to that folder unless you've designated a different location. Please explain your situation in more detail.

Hi,

I would like to create some kind of batching script that replaces the date modified of many folders with their date created, any advice on what I should use to do this? I'm thinking JScript might do it, but I've not used that before, and not sure how to go about setting up to use it, or if it really is suitable.

The reason for this request, we have a media server shared on a local network, specifically an "incoming" folder that needs to be write enabled. When some users browse to folders inside incoming they create a thumbs.db file, which touches the containing folder's modified date. We could (and have) gotten those users to turn off that setting, but it only takes one person to mess it up, and has become a recurring problem over the years. Unfortunately, some other devices on the network (eg iPads) can not sort folders by date created, only date modified, so I would like to reset the folder dates automatically.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

edit, after a bit more googling, it looks like powershell is the right tool for something like this, yes?

The code below gives me the Date and Time the file
was created. If another file with a newer date
gets copied over it, the date created stays the
same and only the date modified changes.

I need to get the Date & Time Modified. Does anyone
know how?

Thank you.
Sub ShowFileInfo(filespec)
Dim fs, f, s
Error_Flag = 0
On Error GoTo No_File
Set fs = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set f = fs.GetFile(filespec)
s = "Created: " & f.datecreated 'modified ' created
FilDate = f.datecreated
'FilDate = f.datemodified
'MsgBox s, vbSystemModal
GoTo Done
No_File:
On Error GoTo 0
Error_Flag = 1
Done:
End Sub

Answer:VB Text File Date Modified?

Something like this

s = "Created: " & f.datecreated
or
s = "Created: " & f.datelastmodified

Hey, I don't really know how to describe this problem too well, but the gist of it is that on windows such as where I'm selecting a file to open, or where to save something I'm downloading, etc., XP sorts the files by their date modified, rather than by name. I don't believe I did anything to activate this, it kinda just came up out of nowhere. But it's getting really annoying. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks! :)

Here's a sample of what's going on:

Answer:Things being sorted by date modified...

Hi there LexiconDevil, welcome to TSF...

Please try the attached registry tweak as it should resolve the problem. All you need to do is unzip it then double click it to merge with your registry. You should notice the difference straight away but if not, try rebooting.

Post back if that helps or not please :)

When I look at the contents of folders there is usually a column headed 'Date modified'. On some folders this has changed to 'Date taken' and the column is blank, can I change it back?I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. Thanks

Answer:DATE modified Vista folders

If you click on the bar that has 'Date Modified' wording and select More, there are plenty of fields to choose from.

Is there a programme/add on that will display the date down by the clock in the System Tray?As I get older I find myself increasingly unaware not just of the hour but even the day!

Answer:Date on Screen (No, not that sort of date!)

Try unlocking the toolbar and raise it a bit. The clock will now show the time, day and date. Lock the toolbar.
