New Installation -- System using wrong Network Name

Question: New Installation -- System using wrong Network Name

I just performed a clean install of win 8.1 (I couldn't take win 10 fonts anymore). All went fine but because I hadn't loaded Dell drivers yet, my wired internet wasn't working. So in order to connect with Dell and download drivers, I connected to my wireless.

No problem -- internet access worked fine and I was able to update all my Dell drivers. This caused my wired internet access to start working. It appears that the system made the wired connection my network (which I wanted) but it is still keeping my wireless router as the network name.

For example, if I display network connections, it shows Wi-Fi none; Wired Ethernet <name of my wireless router>

Is there anyway I can change that name??

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Netgear WN111 USB wireless adaptor on my PC (802.11n NIC).

It works fine with my WiFi network, but it always displays the wrong icon in the System Tray when connected. It shows the signal bars greyed out, with a yellow star on top.

I have tried a Windows update on the driver, but Windows (7 ultimate) says it's using the latest driver.

Netgear only have a Vista driver for this NIC, tried this to no avail, same problem.

I have no other NICs enabled on the box (wired Ethernet port disabled in BIOS and nothing in Device Manager).

I have googled this issue and I'm not alone (and it's not just Netgear NICs affected). However all the solutions say remove & re-install the device. Done this, and it's made no difference.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks & regards,

Answer:Wireless network - System Tray icon wrong

If a re-install is the fix, you may need to do a complete re-install. That is uninstall the software, then delete all the .DLL and .SYS files the uninstall leaves. Then delete the .INF and .CAT files, remove all Registry entries for this NIC. Reboot several times and double check everything is gone. You might need to check if there is a special service running for this NIC if there is you will need to disable the service, reboot, delete the registry keys, and then delete all the files for the service. I would reboot and double check again. Once you are sure it is gone. Then on a CLEAN boot, Don't open any programs and if anything starts automaticly like Yahoo Chat etc. Exit it and all other programs. Then re-install the NIC. That should get it. -WS

I'm re-installing Win 7 64bit from the Microsoft disc supplied with my computer, and have been following the clean install tut no.1649. All seemed well, but at point 16, when I had confirmed the timezone the next screen wasn't as shown, but the desktop (pic 18 of 19), and nothing else.
The screen resolution was was 800 x 600 and the best I can set it to via display is 1400 x 1050 when it should be 1920 x 1080. Also I am connected to the internet via an ethernet cable, but my screen is showing that there are no connections available.

I was obviously in trouble to re-install, and now feel I am deeper in the mire. Can someone please advise?

Answer:Installation gone wrong? - Help please

You followed the tutorial for Clean Install, ok?

Do you have the Graphics Card's Driver CD? Install the driver.

If you dont have, Go to AMD Graphics Drivers & Software, download the required display driver, and install it.

Everything will be OK, dont worry

Hello, I followed the steps in the page 5 of this document: The install_id it gives me is supposed to be like : 1249679, but I've got a number with 10 digits. When I try to input it in the site to have my license keys, it doesn't work. I used my local ip for the curl command (I have no internet connexion on my HP VM, maybe the problem is here?) Maybe I need a global ip for the registration, I don't know.

Some background: I recently installed a new SSD on my Dell Studio PC and cloned my hard drive to the SSD so that Windows 7 would boot from the SSD. However, to do this, I needed to delete (after backup) a lot of files before cloning so that the drive would fit.
After having a lot of issues, including my back up software suddenly not recognizing backups etc, I finally managed to restore most of my files. Part of the process I followed was changing locations of some user files (such as My Pictures) to the old hard drive.
Anyway, I have had lots of issues with Windows since, with losses of icons etc and programs not working, some of which I have now seemed to have corrected by restoring some of my files in appdata folder. However, I've never been able to bring all these files back as I get messages saying some cannot be moved due to security settings.
Now, I am unable to open files such as explorer.exe and control panel! One message said that the username I was logged in as had prevented me from access.
This all seems bizarre and confusing to me and any help would be appreciated.
Nb: I'm detailing this all from memory whilst on a train so specifics could be a bit fuzy. I can check error messages etc when I get home if that helps.

Hey, guys,

I was tryin' to install Windows 7 on my laptop when it came up with a Windows Error Recovery. It told me that windows had failed to start maybe because of a recent hardware or software change, and it also suggested me to fix the problem by inserting the installation disc. Unfortunately, the disc drive of my laptop could not work any more. I tried entering the safe mode but it told me that windows could not be installe at the mode. the Last known good configuration wouldn't work, either. Would anyone please let me know what the rpoblem is and what I can do? Thanks!

I have a Dell Latitude D810 with Windows XP Pro SP3. A while ago I got a 60 day trial for Microsoft Office Professional 2007 from and it has expired. As a Christmas gift my family got me the Academic version of Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 with Accounting (for my parents).
I uninstalled the trial version of Microsoft Office Professional 2007 and installed the first disk of Microsoft Office Ultimate which installs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Groove, Publisher, Access, and InfoPath.
After I installed the first disk everything was running fine, but when I tried to install the second disk I recieved a message saying that the setup failed and it told me it had something to do with SQL Server. What is this? What does it do?
I thought that maybe I had to reboot my computer before I could do anything because I had installed the first disk. After rebooting, my computer said: "SQLDUMPER failed initialization your installation is either corrupt or it has been tampered with. Please contact the package vendor or uninstall then reinstall."
I can't uninstall Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 and so under the impression that I screwed the installation up somewhere I tried to use System Restore to go back before I uninstalled the trial version of Microsoft Office Professional 2007.
The restore was successful and I no longer recieved the message reading: "SQLDUMPER failed initialization your installation is either corru... Read more

I wish I could attribute this to someone other than me...
We have a new Dell XPS that came with XP installed. One our techs messed up the installed version of XP (long story). She asked me to reinstall XP with the disk that came with the computer. While doing the install, I accepted the default installation location, which was evidently the "D" drive. Of course, Office and everything else is having fits b/c its looks for default paths on "C".

Is there anyway to move XP to the C Drive without doing a full reinstallation? (please tell me there is)

If I do have to do a full installation to get XP on C, how do I get it off of D?

Can I change the drive letters using the Disk Mgt Option (i.e. change D to C), and is this a good option?

Thanks in Advance!!

Answer:XP Installation on Wrong Drive

Eh, with that much going wrong, might as well wipe the drive and put it all back on the right way, you'll probably just run into little nitpicky things down the road if you don't.

If there's any data on there you need, back it up and wipe it.

I installed Windows 7 Pro and by lameness checked Ultimate. Now windows pops up as counterfeit.

I really don't want to remove all my files and programs to reinstall Pro so they don't get wiped. IF I purchase Ultimate and install over what Microsoft says is the counterfeit windows 7 Ultimate version, will Windows still recognize the proper 7 Ultimate install and/or will everything get wiped anyway.

Thank you.

Welcome Pauljay to the windows forums.

If you have installed the ultimate version and you then go to MS and pay for the ultimate version, all you should have to do is to enter the code into your registration and it should then validate and you should be ok. Otherwise, I believe that you better copy all the data and anything else you want to save to an external device and then do a boot of the dvd and delete the existing partitions and then reformat and install the correct version.
Calling microsoft might help as they will be glad to sell you the ultimate version but I think that the PRO version is probably more than most people would need.

I have an old install of XP left on an additional harddrive after I got a bigger drive and reinstalled... but now all of a sudden that's the only one it'll boot to! I had some other issues (caused, believe it or not by AVG).. and in the process of that I ran a repair installation over my new and proper XP.. with all the other drives disconnected.. and it was working fine, but as soon as I hook up the other drives... BLAM it's booting into the old install again. Now in disk management it's listed as the Boot Drive and the one that SHOULD be System is listed as active... i read something about making it active to make it boot from that drive... but it's not working.. what is the easiest way to modify where it boots from? I have been trying through the recovery console with fixmbr but that didn't work... i feel like there should be something more straightforward though!

note: the drive with windows that i want to boot off of IS listed first in the hdisk boot priority in the bios...

Answer:wrong installation of XP is booting

This may help:
Be sure your "Proper" boot drive is the one listed first in The BIOS boot order. The nomenclature can be confusing. For that matter, just switch the boot order and see what happens.

I upgraded to Windows 10 a week ago. I noticed in Control Panel / Programs & Features that about 30 programs have an "Installed On" date of yesterday when they were actually installed ages ago and another 20 or so programs have an "Installed On" date of 10 June when I upgraded to Windows 10. The rest on the dates appear to be correct. this also happens on my laptop I did a clean install on a few months ago so it looks like a bug in Windows. It's actually quite irritating since I like to sort my programs by date just to see if anything has been installed recently without my knowledge.

What's going on and why isn't Windows showing the actual installation dates?

Answer:Wrong Program Installation Dates!

You will probably find that yesterday you had a significant W10 update which has reset the dates on a number of your programs.

Hi everyone,

My computer used to have an HDD running XP. Recently, I got a new HDD and installed Vista 64-bit Home Premium on it. Since it happened a little while ago, I'm not sure quite what happened during the installation. Right now, though the Windows folder and all the program files are on the new drive, I have to have the old drive first in the boot priority, else Vista won't start up. I may have had the old drive first in the boot queue when I installed Vista, but I don't remember.

If I go to the disk manager, the new HDD has (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) next to it. The old HDD has (System, Active, Primary Partition). So it seems that some basic system files got on the old drive, but everything else is on the new drive.

I would like to eventually format the old drive, but I'm pretty sure that I won't be able to run Vista anymore. Any ideas what happened and how to fix without everyone's favorite cure-all: reformat and reinstall? Is there someway to move whatever system files are on the old drive to the new drive without all sorts of pathing errors?

In case you need it, here are some basic specs:
Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium, SP1
Old HDD: Maxtor MaXLine Pro 500 7H500F0, 500 GB
New HDD: WD VelociRaptor WD3000GLFS, 300 GB
MB: Asus M3A32-MVP

Thanks in advance for any help.

This is my first post, and I did a quick search and didn't see my problem, so I hope I didn't look over something that was already in here.Okay, I have a Toshiba Satellite S-...something or other, that, up until yesterday, was running Windows XP. I bought a usb 2.0 pc mcia card, but it wouldn't install correctly because I apparently didn't have SP-1 installed. I tried to install sp-1, and then restarted. XP loaded, and I made it to the login page, and I got an error. I forget the exact message, but it was something to the effect that it couldn't verify windows or a license I think. I clicked okay, and tried to logon, but I just got the message again.Figuring I messed up the installation, I restarted in safe mode, and did a system restore.Upon rebooting, I found that this didn't help.>.> Then I tried to tell the system to use the last known good configuration. (I think that was kinda dumb now, but I was flailing. ;_;)I restarted, and I saw the os loader screen, then a really quick blue flash, and then the screen went black, and it shut down. It stated to restart on its own, and just went in a loop. Os screen for a bit, blue flash, black, restart. It does this when I try to start in safe mode as well.Obviously, I can get into the bios and such, I just can't get windows to start.I started in one mode (I don't know which one, sorry) and it said that I had Windows XP SP-1, so I guess the installation was at least partially successful.I have the system restore discs that came ... Answer:SP-1 installation gone wrong, now XP wont start

Alicia:Yeah, when i installed service pack 2 for the first time, Windows XP would not let me log on till i activated Windows again, because it was 40 days past the date i originally installed Windows XP.  You can try starting the computer with the system restoration CD and doing a repair installation (that is, if this option is available on the restoration CD).  Then, you can reinstall the service pack and activate Windows if you are connected to the Internet (or call the Microsoft phone number indicated if you are not). the option to do a repair installation is not available, the only way to get to your files is to connect the hard drive to another laptop (or to a desktop computer with a laptop-to-desktop adapter) as a slave drive and copying the files you want to the other computer, so you can then copy them to a CD-R or DVD-R or other removable storage media.Doc

Hi all, i have reinstalled the windows XP.
When i try to update the SP2 for the system, mircrosoft told me i am not using a right product key.

Then i follow the instructoin to download a KeyUpdate Tool and i put in the product key which under my notebook, it saids it is not the correct key for the windows that i am using.
At the compare product key site, it shows:

OS Version: Windows XP Professional
Manufacturer: TOSHIBA
Model: Satellite M60
Product Key: *****-*****-*****-*****-P6R2Y

It shows correctly the manufacture and the model.
However, i am using a Windows Xp Home Edition and the key from that CD is end with *****-*****-*****-*****-Q6JWG.
And the product key from my notebook is end up with *****-*****-*****-*****-GCFKM.

Then I download the Windows Product Key Update Tool and put in both the product key from the CD and notebook.
Both of them dosen't work. I want to know how can I update the Service Pack for my windows. Can anyone help? Thx!

What can i do for that? Thx!!!!!

Answer:Wrong Windows product key during SP2 installation

I have read some threads about similar problems with the OS key and the key changing has always helped?
Sometimes Microsoft rates the image keys as incorrect or invalid. Why? I don't know... it's Microsoft you know ;)

Fact is that the key on the CD cover can be used only to activate the installed Microsoft Works or OneNote software on the notebook. The key is not responsible for the Windows OS!
The key which could be used with Win OS is placed at the bottom of the unit.

Well, according to your message you used this key and now I?m a little bit confused?
I think you should make a call to the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country for clearing this problem?

I bought a Toshiba Satellite A200. During the starting I made a fault.
First screen I choosed French. Second screen I would choose french again, but as it is my first notebook I am not used to the touchpad, I made an error and the starting was made in german.Actually on the screen :
Land/Region Deutschland
Zeit und Wahrung Deutsch
Tastaturlayout Deutsch

Is there a possibility to stop the starting and begin all again in french ?
I don't understand german and everything must be in french.
Thank you for help

Answer:Set wrong language during installation on Satellite A200

Hi there,

you can do the following things:

1. Recover the machine and repeat the procedure, but this time do it RIGHT and choose french.

2. You can go to start -> systemsteuerung -> (something with "Regions- und Sprachoptionen") -> there you should be able to exchange the languages but I am not sure how to do it, because I have just Vista on english.

Good luck

Hi, i use a home made pc and running win xp pro with sp2. I recently upgraded my hard drive with a 200gb one as the previous one i had was to small. Hello, wasn't really sure where to post this

Side note:this laptop was dropped or stepped on. ill explain in post.

So my buddy asked me to fix his toshiba and i have been having a great time. but sadly cannot get any operating system to load. Here follows the system specs, what ive done so far, and my main errors im receiving.

So i started off by using f8 to access windows boot command, would not run command prompt or repair.

So....I pulled out my personal windows 7 home premium disk to see if it would respond better to that repair menu or access the command prompt with the repair tools but everytime right before the installation menu it would hang up, similiar with the f8 command.

shortly after I received an error stating no valid devices are found and it would no longer read my windows 7 installation disk....system retry failed or something..

so I pulled out a box of old crap moved aside a yearbook and found an old windows 98 cd and precided to try cd booting with that which was a success.

so then i was messing with dos and deleted my partitions and fdisk exited right after...woops thought i would be able to recreate those parts....anyways it closed down and was no longer able to read the drive. prompting a> on start haha and a si... Read more

I would be so grateful if someone could help with this basically I was trying to install drivers in win7 different to the ones windows wanted to install and to do so I read a thread on changing something in a policy I had to run a command which I now can't remember and need to change it back.
it was in gpedit.msc and the command read something like enable blocking windows automatic driver installation.
I have since found I could have done this simply in system... Bit late now huh

If anyone understands this vague description of what I've done.. Please let me know.
or if there is a way to set defaults back

I currently have Java 8, update 25 (64bit). If I go to the Java website and want to verify java, nothing happens. When I want to print a coupon the coupon website (SmartSource) tells me "Java not installed" even though I meet the criteria for their "supported version" of the browser (IE10) and the operating system : Windows 7. I checked the Java control panel and it is enabled in the browser and the "allow scripting" is also on. This all happened fairly recently and I don't know why. I have uninstalled Java 8 update 25 (64 bit) and downloaded the offline version for a fresh start. It installed properly and it shows in my programs and features of windows. Still problematic. Any ideas?Thank you!message edited by geekiamnot

Answer:What is wrong with Java 8 update 25 (64bit) installation?

Looks like they've changed their minds recently, only a short while back it said that 8.25 was for developers and my 7.71 still says it is up to date. I suspect it makes little difference then - they are both dated Oct 2014. When it was working do you remember what version you had?If there are still old versions around they might cause issues but the Java uninstall Tool still requires you to verify so I doubt this will work either: assume the IE10 you are using is the 64 bit version. Any reason why you prefer not to go for IE11 - just wondering if that might fix it?There are some general tips here: that they say the 32 bit version gives fewer issues - maybe it is worth a shot.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

I had all my files saved on the secondary Western Digital 160GB Sata HDD, it was listed first at the time... But I accidentally deleted the volume on it.. Is there a way to get those files back? I had photos, movies, music, some other important files. The whole reason for having them on that secondary drive was to save them (kicking myself), until I installed Windows 7 on the new 500GB Sata HDD... I got a copy of Paragon Partition Manager 11 Personal ... and going through the Undelete Partition wizard now... Any help? Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

PS. I just did the "delete" option in the Windows 7 installation section for "advanced options", the HDDs were there.. but I accidentally hit delete on the 160GB instead... That's all I did with the drive though.

Answer:Went through to Windows 7 installation, deleted wrong HDD volume..

To try and answer your question; yes and no. You can take the drive and try to have it professionally recovered. There are some companies out there that specifically recover data from these types of situations. This can be very expensive and no guarantee. I know this not what you wanted to here.

I have 3 hdd in my system and have made notations as to the location of each drive and how the OS see's each of 0 is hard drive 1, 1 is hard drive 2 and 2 is hard drive 3, which is the way I have mine installed in the hdd cage...I know that hdd 0 is the 1TB drive and hdd 1 and 2 are 320 GB for backups and data storage. Keeping in mind each drive letter that the OS assigns to each of them. So when a re-install of the OS comes along I know what hdd is what and where.

I assume this is not possible anymore.
As far as I know the other languages are locked or deleted and you will be able to chose only the Dutch as language.

If you need the recovery disk in French then you will have to order it from this page:

Where you can see this with Panasonic?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Windows 7 installation hangs on blue wallpaper. What's wrong?

Follow these steps to fix a Blue Screen in Safe Mode

* Once booting start, select "Safe Mode" from the boot menu.

* Scan your hard drive by running your antivirus software. If the program locates an infection, move it to your vault or follow the on-screen instructions. After program completation, if a virus was removed, attempt to reboot your computer and see if this clears up the problem. If not, restart your computer in safe mode.

* Restore your computer to a previous point. Click on the "Start" button. Select "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools" and finally "System Restore". I have a new pc and I installed windows 10 64 bit, it went well but there were a few thing I wasn't sure about, one being that the time was wrong and would not correct itself

In the end I decided to reinstall windows as it was very quick the first time, when I got to the part about which drive /partition to install to there was drive 0 and drive 1, I have 2 drives: an m.2 ssd and a sata HDD, the m.2 ssd is the system drive. It was cut up into about 4 partitions I think so I just deleted them all and then tried to proceed, windows wouldn't let me install and after searching online for solutions I unplugged the other HDD and windows let me install on to the ssd (I don't understand this because there was no problem having the other drive installed before).

there are 2 things I would appreciate some advice with:

1: The time is still wrong and I don't know why

2: I now have a clean installation of windows 10 64bit again, in disk management it shows 1 partition for my system drive, I expected there to be multiple partitions like before, is this right that there is only one?

Thank you

Answer:installation partition question and wrong time after install

If you post a screen shot of disk management then we'll tell you why.

I have done a rebuild of my computer and am setting it up with XP (previously used ME). I have 2 hard drives and after installing XP on one of them I decided I would prefer to use the other as my main boot drive. They are both Seagate drives and I used Diskwizard to format the second drive and transfer the Windows installation to it . I then swapped the drives over. All went fine with one exception - System Restore.System Restore still thinks the old drive is the system drive and will not work. It appears to make manual restore points, but they are not there. I tried to switch it on and off, but it had problems with the drive containing the old installation which it thinks is the system drive.I guess this is due to Diskwizard not being able to copy the System Restore data across. I used the version of Diskwizard which works in Windows - as recommended by Seagate for XP, rather than the floppy/DOS method I have used in the past.Has anyone had this problem and managed to get the new drive recognised by system restore as the system drive?

Answer:XP System Restore - wrong system drive

Is anyone able to help with this?

Hey guys.
So I live in Ireland and when installing Windows 8, I set some language choices to Irish (keyboard and date/time), but language to English UK. In previous installations of Windows, such as Windows 7, this did not make apps show up with Irish language titles.
After removing Ireland from the Language options > Control Panel - Language, some apps went back to displaying in English. But other Modern UI apps, like the news still show up in Irish titles.
Have I missed a setting of some sort? I have attached a screenshot of my language options, just in-case i'm missing something.
PS: I have already rebooted a few times since changing these options.
EDIT: Fixed. The latest batch of Windows updates seems to have kicked it back into English. Thanks anyway!

My computer had been running a little slowly and I suspected that there might be some spyware running on it. I downloaded and installed Spybot Search and destroy as well as the teatimer that came with it. As the installation started running, Mcafee started freaking out and blocked some file actions. At that point I realized that it wasn't a good idea to have the teatimer running while mcafee was also running. I couldn't find the teatimer in the add/remove programs menu, so I did a system restore to before I had installed the spybot bundle. The restore worked, but then once the system reloaded, an error message came up saying :" the instruction at 0xffa5785e referenced memory at 0xffa5785e. The memory could not be read. Click ok to terminate the program". This error message comes up anytime I try to open a program (the only thing that changes is the number it gives for the memory). I tried to undo the system restore, but the error comes up when I try to open the system restore utility. I tried to load windows in safe mode to undo the changes, but when I try that a blue screen comes up saying that it will not load in order to prevent further damage to my computer. Windows will load when not in safe mode, but it has the memory errors. I have no idea what is wrong with it. My computer is running windows xp. HELP!

Answer:Problem with system memory after system restore/spybot installation

Try disabling Tea Timer.

EDITED to provide more detail!

So I have a home network Ö in essence a server (2003) and some clients (XP Pro) which are configured as an AD domain. On that network I also have several devices specifically an HP Jet Direct print server with a Laser Printer on it and a broadband router.

IPís are as follows:

Router: xxx.01
Server: xxx.02
Jet Direct: xxx.33
DHCP Clients: xxx.65 to xxx.254Click to expand...

The Server:
The server (2003) handles DNS and DHCP, DNS was installed when I created the domain controller (DCPROMO) and configured afterwards to forward to the OpenDNS servers on the internet (it's a small network so I haven't configured any reverse lookups), the server's own DNS is configured to point to itself. DHCP supplies IP, gateway & DNS settings to all clients and the server acts as file and print as well as the one and only DC. To my knowledge the server cannot resolve or ping any client on the network

The Clients:
Mostly XP Pro (some Linux) get DHCP supplied IP addresses (client IP's range from xxx.254) as well as gateway (router, xxx.01) & DNS (server, xxx.02). All clients have home folder connected automatically but I manually configure other shares and printers (I'm sure it could be done via domain policy). All clients can resolve and ping the server, access shares and printers, they can ping the router and have full access to the internet (browse, MSN, mail etc.). I haven't tested them all but to my knowledge n... Read more

My grandson who usually is very good on machines set me up between the lap top and my HP desktop that's running the 64 bit. Now I find out the laptop is the Alpha leader and not my desktop. Can this be changed. We couldn't set up the third one as Santa hadn't delivered it yet. I now can't connect to the internet on the desktop but can on the laptop. Help if you can Plese.

Hey guys;

I have Shaw Cable high speed internet. I use ethernet cable to connect my modem to the computer. Now, all the sudden the light "PC Activity" on the modem is off. Also the light behind network card (which shows that the ethernet wire is connected properly) is off. Good thing is that Shaw's modem can be connected through USB cable, so I am able to connect to the internet. So, what do you guys think is wrong with my network card. Do you guys think it is burnt? I can't open my pc at this time, but I will try to check it tomorrow. Help guys;

Answer:What is wrong with my network card?

that happens to me, but it's because the network cable sucks. you have to push both ends in tightly until the light goes back on. see if it helps.

Something, is wrong with my home network.

What happens? Every so often (5-10 times per day) our internet will slow to snail pace. So slow that my browsers cannot even load anything. Instead it shows up as though there is no internet at all. Sometimes, there is no internet at all. To fix this, I reset either the modem, or the modem and the router. It usually works.

What its NOT?! I called Comcast to make sure it wasn't something at there end. They troubleshooted with me, and had me plug one of my computer directly into the modem. It would perfectly.

Then I tested our router. I have one that I use at college, so I plugged that one in instead. It did nothing to change the problem.

I tested my wireless connection, and all of the wired connections (between computers and router, and between router and modem). NOTHING will fix the problem!!!

When the internet gives out on my laptop (Vista) I'll run the diagnosis. Usually it comes back saying there is no problem with the internet, or to reset my wireless router. Obviously this isn't helpful. Sometimes though, it tells me to rest my router (duh) and even less often it will tell me that it cannot find the DNS. I've tried to find more information about this problem, but from what I've read, it basically means it cannot connect to the internet...

Anyway, this is really frustrating. I don't enjoy resetting my router and modem several times a day.

Answer:Not sure whats wrong with the network... :(

Ok, I recently moved into a house with two friends. We set up our network with a belkin router at first and then a linksys router and it runs like garbage. We were getting disconnected or lagging out in messaging programs and games. Downloads and uploads get dropped before they finish. Ive tested the connection with me alone on the router and it worked fine, I tried it with me and one of my roommates and it was fine. I tried it with me and the other roommate and the disconnects and problems come back. What could be a possible reason for this? He downloads torrents but its not a bandwidth issue (I think). I keep doing speed tests and its far from being hammered. The lag-outs only happened when his pc is plugged into the router regardless of which port he's plugged into. The wireless is passworded. What could be the problem??

I was mucking with the internal IP addresses of my home network and as part of doing so I changed the routers default IP from to but the router would not reboot so I closed the brower and reset the router using the little hidden reset button.

So now the router is back to its default internal IP address but Zone Alarm's firewall zone entry for "new network" still says and Im sure thats why the our connection is blocked from time to time.
Does anybody know how to correct the IP address of the active network?

Hi folks,
I have just now taken on the task of creating a shared folder off of an old and hardly-ever-used external hard drive I have so that my parents can have a local, centralized place to store and save things to. I want only my laptop (running windows 7), my father's laptop (running Vista), and my mother (going to be running 7), and of course my desktop considering the drive is connected over there to be able to do anything with the contents of the files inside of the shared folder. I used the network share wizard under computer management to create the share, however, my laptop can see the network location, (called Katherine-desk), but the share seems to be unavailable to it considering I got the error message "Windows cannot access the network." What did I do wrong? By the way, I changed some of the configuration in the properties of computer, namely, I changed it so that my desktop is on a network without a domain, and I also changed it from home to work network. Anything out of place there? And isn't the folder supposed to show up in my drives list considering it is stored on a 500 GB external drive? Any help or input on this would be excellent. Thanks so much.

Hello I am currently running windows 7 on a Samsung laptop. About a couple months ago I attempted to run multiple virtual box systems on my laptop, after some time I found no use for them anymore and uninstalled virtual box. just recently i noticed that my wireless status icon was displaying the wrong information, it displays that I am not connected to any network and that network connections are available, but I am properly connected and I have full internet access.
This is what appears when I am experiencing the issue:

Now I have tried uninstalling my wireless card software and I have also checked to ensure there is no virtual box host networking drivers remaining after my uninstall. I don't understand the problem with it.Awhile ago I came here talking about how I have a 4pc home network, some wired, some wireless. I explained how my router keeps spiking and disconnecting for no reason.Well, anyhow, I got a new router. The router was pretty good at first (Microsoft MN700) but again, now it's spiking and disconnecting again. (Security is on this time.)The computers on wireless seems to have the problem more often. For some reason, when the computer starts up, sometimes it says I'm NOT connected but clearly I can surf the web.The thing that has been annoying me most is that according to my network places, I have 4/6 bars of signal with the router yet I CAN'T connect to it. It likes to randomly kick me off and I can never get back in until a long wait.Perfect signal...connecting...dead.P.S. Is this normal? I have a netgear usb wireless network adapter in my room and according to my network places, there is FOUR wireless networks around my house but my router/DS/other wireless computer can't detect them anywhere on the house. I HIGHLY doubt there is 3 wireless networks around me, either that or my adapter can receive signals from FAR far away.

We have a 10/100 wired Lan run thru a hub and are using a linksys router/hub and cards. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, one computer has stopped being able to access the network.

After removing and reinstalling all network adapters with no success, I ran winipcfg. It shows only one thing - PCI Bus Master - with an IP address of Our network runs on the range of numbers. All cards are set to obtain ip automatically and use the tcp/ip protocol. I could not seem to release and renew and I could not find a drop down option for any network adapter.

The motherboard installs onboard sound and lan drivers which show up in the system device manager and network panel. Sound definitely doesn't work and we disabled it and put in a pci sound card some time ago. I also see a lan adapter there but there is no port for it. We installed a linksys pci adapter card which also showed up. Both seem to want irq 11. I disabled the onboard one since it doesn't seem to be doing anything anyway.

I've run norton internet security and came up only with an unremovable "threat" called mediaticketsinstaller.ocx (an adaware.cdt threat). I am trying to find information on that. Not sure if it could have anything to do with my pc not access the network or not. Spybot and adaware are my next options. Any suggestions? How likely is it the card is toast?

Answer:Win 7 showing wrong network icon

Why is it a wrong icon? If you don't have anything plugged into the ethernet port, then it's by definition disconnected. If it really bothers you, hide the icon or disable the interface.

And seriously, don't fucking bump your post after 30 minutes for a ridiculously trivial issue. You'd expect with 10 years experience on these forums that you'd have better sense.

I recently modified my home network in hopes of getting faster file transfers between devices. But it looks like something's not right.

I'm suing Lan Speed Test and the best performance I get over WiFi is about 44Mbps (avg.). From my laptop to my NAS. If i turn off the WiFi and do the test over a wired connection the best I get is 200Mbps (avg.).

Here's what I have:
1. AT&T 2Wire cable modem. Internet comes in the house through this box and it's currently set up to be in bridge mode so that the TPLink router handles everything.
2. TP-Link WDR3600 gigabit/wireless router set to work in 5Ghz only, 11an mixed mode.
3. WD My Book Network Storage. Wired gigabit connection.
4. Desktop PC. Wired gigabit connection.
5. Laptop PC. Wireless.
6. 1 ipad v.2, 2 iphone v.5. Wireless.

Current setup:
1. internet cable goes into 2Wire Modem.Wireless on this device is OFF.
2. cable goes from LAN port on modem to WDR3600 router's internet port
3. cables go out from router to Desktop PC and NAS
4. all other devices are connected to the 5GHz wireless network created by the router.

Answer:Slow home network. What am I doing wrong?

It's probably the MyBook. I doubt it can handle gigabit speed. Usually those cheap NASes only hit 200mb/s if lucky.

The wireless speeds look normal to me.

Well... I know what's WRONG. I've been having problems with system 32 for a while. It was those RUNDLL error messages that I was stupid and ignored. But eventually, I googled it and tried to figure out how I could possibly get rid of it. So this site told me to download something along the lines of "XP Adaware". I can't remember the name exactly, but it ended up being a fraud application (just my luck) and sent out so many viruses and problems and ugh. I read somewhere that the program gives your computer malware, so I'm assuming THIS site didn't lie to me. Ooookay, let's see. For a while, the program would pop up and tell me I can't access the internet because it's dangerous and it might give me a virus. Ironic. So I ended up uninstalling it, and leaving my computer off for a while.I started it up this morning, and tried doing some things. I'm pretty sure all I can access right now is my documents(music, pictures, stuff like that), but nothing beyond that. It lets me access Control Panel off and on I guess. The error message that pops up (I'd take a screenshot, but I'm on a different computer, and i don't even wanna do too much to the infected one anyway) says:(The title is the address of my computer for the file I'm trying to access, like say, Google Chrome)windows cannot access the specified device, path,or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.I do indeed have permissions to access... Read more

Hi Guys,

I am writing to try to address some PC issues that have been constantly troubling me for a long time.

I thought I may have fixed them all when I (very recently) switched to a brand new SSD drive from the old OS drive, which appeared to be either hardware faulty or have some kind of very deep-level rootkit. I installed a brand new copy of Windows on this new drive and installed all my software anew on another, brand new SSD drive.

The old drive was giving me recurrent BSODs, inability to unzip extractables, video driver problems, Windows Update was faulty/buggy, frequent browser crashes, boot issues, Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool finds unspecified "hardware fault", and no major free anti-virus program would install or function.

I threw out the old C: drive. I thought with the fresh install of Windows and my programs on brand new drives I may have solved all these issues. In fact, nearly all issues now went away.

But I am still having two major issues, and I hope you can help with these.

My specs:

Intel Core2Duo E8600 @ 3.33GHz (Socket 775 LGA)
ASUS P5B Deluxe
8GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 (PC2-5300)
NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 with latest stable driver package
2 x SanDisk Extreme SSD 120 GB SATA 6.0 Gb SDSSDX-120G-G25 (Windows is on drive C
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (completely updated with all the latest Microsoft updates)

Wow thats kinda crazy.

I suspect you have a hardware issue. Like the motherboard, or memory.

Did you run any memory testing? Do it from a boot disk outside the operation system.

If its not memory, it could be your motherboard SATA controllers are bad.

We do not do Hijackthis log reading or diagnosis without a malware cause, but if you feel you have malware on your PC please follow the below guide and attach all the requested logs.

Also if you have malware signs please describe them as in if its popups, browser hijacks and if so do they have names?

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

I cant seem to play graphic-intensive games for more than 10 min now. Games like Crysis, NBA 2k9, GTA IV etc that have great graphics seem to "hang" after a while. It's not a total computer freeze.

After 10 min, the screen will freeze, but I can still hear the background noise in a loop. So the background is may be 6-8 sec noise that is continually being repeated. But after a few min, this stopped too and everything is frozen.

Is this motherboard overheating? GPU overheating? RAM leak?

ie how can I know which parts of my PC is broken and needs to be replaced. I dont want to spend $200 on a new graphic card and end up with the same problem

Answer:What's wrong with my system?

Is this motherboard overheating? GPU overheating? RAM leak?Click to expand...

I think you're on the right track here. If the video was was bad, I think you'd notice problems right away, not after 10min or so. Same applies to the RAM and/or CPU. However, if the games all read from the CD/DVD while playing, it could be a faulty drive or cable, or controller, or the hard drive drive may be failing or have bad sectors. But I really think it's a thermal issue. Download and run HWMonitor and check it to see what your system temps are at idle. You may be able to minimize HWMonitor and run it while gaming, but many games don't run correctly (or at all) with HWM in the background... I don't know why. Two apps I recommend are GPU Caps Viewer and GPU-Z. Install GPU Caps Viewer, with it open and running, launch GPU-Z. Use the 'Fur Rendering' tool in GPU Caps Viewer (see screen shot below; the green box) to start working the video card. Then go to the temp monitor in GPU-Z (screen shot below) and watch the temp. This will give you an idea where the temps get during gaming. You may be able to run HWM also to monitor your CPU temps; if not, there's others in the Monitoring section, and in the Processor section here at Major Geeks. Good luck! Keep us posted!

(you can also monitor GPU temp in GPU Caps Viewer; the purple boxes in the screen shot)

Hi all,

I was trouble shooting a problem with my system and decided to do a clean re-install of the OS. I know i should of imaged the drive before i re-installed the OS - but i did not.

I did however, use R-Studio to copy the following folders and contents to a backup drive:

1 - Documents and Settings
2 - Program Files
3 - Windows

Is it possible to get my old system back by moving the above three system folders and contents from the backup drive and overwriting the newly installed system files?

I have another system with an dual channel IDE control card that i can hook up the backup drive and the system drive from the other computer up to as additional drives. I could use R-Studio to transfer and overwrite the new system files but I'm not sure if this will work.

What do you all think?

Answer:moving old system folders to new system installation.

So when transferring files from one pc to another using copy and paste, why does it only say 2-3 maybe 5-6 or so..

Iím using windows vista, but itís the same in XP when I was using it. I share a folder on network, browse to this shared folder using another PC on the network (same workgroup) and i copy and paste say a 600mb file. The transfer speed reports (in vista. xp donít have this feature) that its around 3mb/s or so, whatever it says, itís not "what it should be" regardless if its 100mbit(10MB/S) or gbit(100MB/s) network.

Now on the advanced config of the network adapter there are various settings that control the network adapter. Does one of these determine the overall speed or the transfer? Maybe a firewall or router is slowing the transfer; therefore a port should be opened? is so what port? Or are speeds slow due to windows..but where can I find information about such a bug, i mean iv looked and looked.

maybe Iím just not googleing the right thing

so anyway if someone knows anything that could help me speed up the transfer of data between two pc's on a windows network, It would be a great help.

Hi there
Recently I discovered my Inspiron 620, which was running Win 7 OOTB and in the last couple of years has been upgraded to Win10, could not detect my wireless network at home, or those in the nearby area, yet my phone and tablet are able to connect to them.
I couldn't see anything immediately obvious, and tried re-installing the network drivers off however they're Windows 7 drivers, and complain that they're not designed for this OS (meaning Windows 10).   Will Dell be producing Win10 compatible drivers soon, and in the meantime is there a workaround so that i can get my computer back on the 'net?
It's not a hardware fault as the computer is able to connect to my wireless network if I run Linux off a USB stick plugged into it.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated...

Answer:Network drivers for Inspiron 620 say wrong OS (Win 7 but running Win 10)

Dell won't be providing Win 10 drivers for the Inspiron 620. System is  too old...
If you open Device Manager, is the WiFi network card entry marked with a ! or X?
After you upgraded to Win 10, did you run the network connection wizard on the 620 to identity your WiFi network and did you enter the (WPA2) network password on the 620 to allow it to connect to the router?
Have you rebooted the router (and modem)?
Do you have the Dell (Atheros) 1502 WiFi card? If none of the above helps, you might try installing this Win 10 driver for the 1502 card. Be sure to manually set a System Restore point first, to be safe. Keep in mind this driver is for an Alienware system and I have no idea if it will work with an Inspiron.
Worse/worse, remove the existing WiFi card and replace it with an inexpensive WiFi card or plug in a USB>WiFi dongle that's compatible with Win 10...

Hi there,

I am having some strange issues regarding my ethernet network adapter. I run a windows 7 x64 and I am currently running a Intel (r) 82579V gigabit network adapter. The thing is, the driver was made for 82579LM and V versions. Most of the time, my computer reads the adapter as the LM version, in which the ethernet just won't work. Once in a while it gets the V version and everything is alright, but i can't live with such uncertainty. Mostly people suggest i should just buy a new motherboard (?) or a new network adapter, but i'm sure it's a software problem. Shouldn't there be other solutions? The card itself is integrated.

If you guys need anymore info, please feel free to let me know. I am really desperate to get this solved!

Thanks in advance.

I have set up a Windows 7 machine that shares out a hard drive as a network share along with printers to our network. On another computer I was mapping the network drive and accidentally entered the wrong credentials (wrong user name) and choose the remember credentials setting, and it would not let me map the drive. I tried to go back in and remap the drive again but Windows is remembering the user name/password and I can't map it. I can map the drive from any other computer just fine. Does anyone know how to make Windows forget the credentials so I can map the drive?

My laptop has Ethernet and WiFi. I set my network adapter priority to favor Ethernet, when available. The problem is the Network column in the Task Manager's Processes Tab display 0% when I'm only using WiFi. I thought the Network column would show all network activity, regardless of interface. But it looks like it only shows the 1st adapter and ignores the rest.

Do other people see this problem? Oddly, resource monitor seems to show the right info, I think.

a trick i used to use, may work for you. Assuming that other connection has wep or wpa, try connect and put in a wrong password, thusly it will skip over that network.

hey guys i just got done installing vista and everythings running great other than one thing. I have tried 3 different net meter utilities, netmeter, dumeter, and a vista gadget. All 3 are reporting the wrong speeds and its really quite annoying. sometimes it seems like its doubling the number, but i have everything set to KB. It looks like the download speed is correct but now the upload speed, sometimes it shows up to 350KB/sec but i only have a 768 kb connection. i thought maybe it was something else accessing my computer through the router but if i stop uTorrent then everything stays at 0, start uTorrent again and the wrong UL speeds are back....

I could really use some advice guys...

The sticker on the bottom of my Aspire V15 Nitro VN7-571G-719D states "This device contains WLAN+Bluetooth module QCNFA344."  However, according to my Device Manager, my laptop contains a Qualcomm Atheros QCA61x4 Wireless Network Adapter.  I would like to know why a network adapter different than the one that's supposed to be in the laptop was installed on my laptop.  Also, there are a ton of people complaining about network problems with the QCA61x4.  Why does is it seem like Acer has zero interest in addressing this issue?  Do you just not care about your customers?I already called Acer support within the first month I bought my laptop.  They couldn't fix the problem, and now it's been about a year and a half of dealing with this issue.  There's nothing wrong with my router or modem as all other devices in the house work just fine.  Maybe I should just bring this up with the Better Business Bureau.

My Network Places list is inaccurate. When I go to Network Places, I see PC's that are no longer on my network and I don't see other pc's that are connected. I am using WinXP Home. If I vew Network Places from one of the other WinXP pc's, I get a different views. See network_places_Den and network_places_Elyse pics attached. Network Places from one of the other WinXP pc's is different than the first two. The Den PC is wired, the Elyse PC is wireless and the 3rd PC is wired.

If I view the workgroup pc's, all are shown correctly. If I view Network Places from a Vista PC, the view is correct. I see the correct pc's and the folders are correct if I select a PC to view.

My network is comprised of a AirLink101 Wireless router with 3 of the pc's directly connected to it. I also have a Netgear FS105 5 port switch with 3 pc's connected to it and it is connected to the AirLink101. Two of the pc's are wireless. One is WinXP (Elyse attached) and the other is Vista.

This appears to be a WinXP issue.

I would appreciate any insight on this anomaly. For what it is worth, I rebooted the pc's before I took these screen shots.

Answer:[SOLVED] Network Places View Wrong

My Network Places is basically a Recent Documents folder, but for network locations. It does not show a current view of your network, it a list of places you have opened or saved a document to in the past, so it can show places from networks/PCs you are no longer connected too, or that no longer exist.
Shortcuts are usually created only when you open or save a file using a UNC path (\\Server\Share\Filename) unless you've set a policy to prevent their creation.
So it won't show the same locations that you see on other PCs unless you've actually opened or saved a file from those same locations using a UNC path. If you map a drive to a share, shortcuts are not created for that location.

See the NoRecentDocsNetHood entry in this KB article (about 1/2 way down):
Policy settings for the Start menu in Windows XP

You can delete the ones you no longer want, they are not automatically deleted.
You can add one using the Add a network place link on the left.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium x32. My computer automatically connects to a wireless network on start-up, but it keeps connecting to a neighbor's unsecured wireless network. I have checked the box to automatically connect to my wireless network (which is secure) when my network is in range (which is always, it's a desktop and the router is in the next room). But it still connects to my neighbor's network and then I have to tell it to disconnect and connect to my own.

Is there a way to keep it from connecting to the neighbor's network? This is driving me crazy, not to mention making me paranoid about being on an unsecured network!!

HI all,

First post, i've been searching but wording this in a way similar to someone else has beaten me thus far.....

I have a windows7 client that was initially called wrt2012 on our domain, i renamed the machine to wr5 when i was happy it was working ok (it was my guniea pig machine !) but now when i try to establish an ODBC connection to an SQL server i get the following error:

Connection failed:[HY000][MSQL][ODBC 3.51 DRIVER] Host 'WRT2012.<domain name>' is blocked because of many connection errors; unblockwith 'mysqladmin flush hosts'

Can someone explain where this is broadcasting the machine name WRT2012, i.e the old client name from so i can delete it ?

*not sure if this post should be in networking or whatever so plumped for general ??

Answer:client machine using wrong network ID using ODBC ???

I took my old desktop which had a direct connect to a DSL modem and setup it up for as the family computer with wireless access (it has internet access just fine). I changed its computer-name from Shawn (under System, Advanced settings) to "family" so that I could use the same name (Shawn) for my new desktop (which connects via ethernet to the DSL wireless modem).

I can see the old desktop from the new desktop under network in explorer on the new desktop. So i have "Shawn" (new) and "Shawn-PC" (old) but I cannot log in via wireless to the old computer. The old has the new login name "family" but I understand the network only goes by the original computer name? But "Shawn" or "Shawn-PC" does not get me in.

I never changed the password on the old desktop but I did turn it off. But even using the old password does not work.

How can I get access to the shared files on the old (shawn-renamed-family) computer from my new desktop?

win 7 SP1 64x

Answer:Cannot log into home network computer: name or password wrong

To access the machine using the user account 'Family' you would enter the following at that prompt:

Then enter the password for that account on the old machine.

It is advised to use an Administrator account when providing credentials. For example Family should be a system Administrator

My apologies if I misinterpreted your problem. You could remove all authentication procedures by going to network and sharing centre > Change Advanced Sharing Settings and then turning off Password Protected Sharing

Hope This Helps,
