Unable to view video file thumbnails in Win7

Question: Unable to view video file thumbnails in Win7

I'm running Windows 7 x64, and I can't see any video file thumbnails (ex: .avi, .flv, etc) of the files in my My Videos folder. All video clips work in VLC and WMC.

Addendum: I've tried to solve this problem by downloading the K-Lite Codec for x32 and x64 (as suggested to a user in a different thread), but as seen below, this solution only worked for the .mkv and .wmv files.

Can anyone offer up another solution?

Preferred Solution: Unable to view video file thumbnails in Win7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have recently bought a Samsung Digimax 420 camera. I have taken a mini-video but am having problems viewing it. There is sound, but no picture. I have tried opening the AVI file up in Windows Media Player (I have latest version) and Realplayer (again, latest version). Could something be blocking me? I am able to view other media player/realplayer files, but not taken by the camera. The camera has been checked and is working properly. I have also tried using a different lead and tried another brand new software programme (in case it was faulty), but no change.Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am running Vista Home ... when in the folder I have my videos in I can see my .avi movies from my old HP dig cam but can not view the thumbnail of the newer .mov videos from my Kodak dig cam. This bugs me. I can play them in quicktime but would love to be able to see the thumbnail preview so sorting them would be a lot faster.

I've googled this and tried several things. Nothing has worked as of yet. Maybe I am not doing something right. I download and installed VLC and 3ivx. I do not want to change any .reg afraid I might mess something up. This machine is only 1 week old.

Someone please help me I don't know what else to do or where else to look.

Answer:Can't view .mov file thumbnails

As you may know, Windows Vista doesn't natively support mov files. VLC can play them, but its decoders are built-in and completely independent of Windows. 3ivx only decodes mov files (and mp4 files and 3gp files) encoded in MPEG-4 (it won't decode mov files in any other codec); not sure about its previewing capabilities.
What you would need is a filter (sometimes called splitter) to enable Windows (and Windows Media Player and Explorer etc.) to sparse mov files. The two most popular ones are Haali's and Gabest's filters. They're not perfect (have a few bugs - notably for mp4 and 3gp files) because they're third-party software, but they work for most files.
I believe Haali's filter is bundled with QuickTime Alternative, which you can get here:
During installation it will propose to uninstall QuickTime, but that's not necessary. You can have QuickTime and QuickTime Alternative work side by side just fine.
As for Gabest's filter it's built-in Media Player Classic (also installed with QuickTime Alternative). I think you could download the filter alone somewhere in here
but I'm not sure how to install it and register it with Windows.

I have a desktop with Windows XP Pro SP3, and a netbook with Windows 7 Home edition SP1. It appears that the "Thumbnails" (picture) option has been eliminated from the video files "View" menu options, so I can no longer see a pictorial snapshot of the contents of my video files.

Is this option completely eliminated or is there something I can do to retrieve this feature for Windows 7?

I've been googling around but can't seem to find an answer to this seemingly simple question. The documents and spreadsheets on my desktop show up as a thumbnail preview of the file (which is kinda stupid because all of the documents and spreadsheets look the exact same). So I want these to just show the Word or Excel icon instead. I know you can go to:

Explorer>Tools>Folder Option>View>Files and Folders>"Always show icons, never thumbnails"

But then my picture files just show the Windows Picture Viewer icon instead of the picture thumbnail. I'm just wondering if there's a way to assign icon or thumbnail settings to specific file types or extensions? I'd like my pictures to have thumbnails but all other file types to show only icons. I'm currently using Windows 7 and system details are in the sig...

Answer:(Win7) How to show icons for some file types and thumbnails for others?

If you don't explicitly tell Word or Excel to save a thunbmail of the file along with the file, it will use the default Word/Excel document icon (which happens to look like a document from either of those programs). Can't you just change the default icon to something else?

To answer your question, though, no, I don't think it's possible.

Hi, I have a Windows Vista and I'd like all file types from all Media players to display a thumbnail of the video in Windows Explorer as opposed to just showing an icon of the file type. The problem is that in Vista, it only shows thumbnails of Windows Media Player videos and not videos that use VLC Media Player (except .VOB which it does show) or Quicktime. I've done some research online and I've seen that I need to merge a Registry file into the Registry Editor with certain Registry keys in it, so I tried doing it for .MP4 files:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

After I entered the above into the Registry I restarted my PC, and nothing happened, the .MP4 videos still show no thumbnails.

Any suggestions or help is welcome and thanked in advance!

Hey all,

Another minor, non-life-threatening irritation:

Running Windows XP Home Edition on a PC, "5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600".

When i browse my folders on Thumbnails view, Windows seems to assign *random* pictures from throughout my hard drive to act as the thumbnail for some folders. Actually it's not totally random; when i assign a picture to act as the thumbnail for one folder, it works fine, but then a week or so later i will find that windows has used that picture as the thumbnail for some other completely unrelated folder, elsewhere on the hard drive.

I can easily fix this by right-clicking on the folder and going to:

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Choose Picture/Restore Default.

Often, that doesn't work: The properties screen will tell me that the default has been restored, for example, but when i actually look at the folder again, it hasn't actually changed anything.

But then, that problem can be solved by going to

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Change Icon.

...and re-selecting the icon that was already supposedly being used by that folder. That usually solves the problem.

This is mildly annoying, and if anyone knows a permanent fix, i'd appreciate it. But the main problem I wanted help for was for the "My Documents" folders.

The fix given above will not work for "My Documents", "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos", because the properties screens f... Read more

I've ran Disk Cleaner to delete the thumbnails.

I've deleted the thumbnail caches via command prompt (Admin).

I've gone through View/Options/View and made sure "Always show icons, never thumbnails" was not checked.

And still, I cannot get thumbnails for my .mp4 files. All I get is that movie clicker symbol blue icon.

Anything I haven't tried yet?

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Every single time I view any file's properties (context-menu right-click -> Properties), it always immediately launches an installation of an already-installed (but disabled) application! Whaaat the heck is going on?

I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 Pro/SP1. The app it keeps trying to install is MacDrive 8, but I think that may be more incidental than anything else. I say that because I experienced the exact same thing perhaps 5-7 years ago under 32-bit XP Pro/SP3, except it tried to install something else (I can't recall what). Although MacDrive 8 is already installed, I almost never use it, and so I've disabled all the services and all other startup stuff related to MacDrive using my startup manager. So the puzzling fact that Win 7 is so desperate to install MacDrive again is truly weird, and extremely annoying!

It usually takes three attempts to cancel the unwanted installation, after which the file's property window comes up normally.

I've thoroughly scanned for malware, and found none. Also, I've some reliable registry check and repair tools: Iolo's System Mechanic's Registry Tuner, and Wise Registry Cleaner. Afterwards, no registry errors were reported at all.

What the heck is going on? What bizarre connection is there between viewing a file's properties and a forced install of anything?

Answer:Huh? Whenever I view any file properties, Win7 tries to install something!

If you have no use for MacDrive, why not uninstall it altogether instead of disabling its components? If you wanna keep it though, reinstall it to fix whatever part of it is broken. Reinstalling will most likely re-enable disabled components.

We can test if the setup launches because of the disabled functionalities by enabling MacDrive and attempting to reproduce the problem. If it goes away when MacDrive is enabled, then it means disabling it is the reason for the setup application launching every time you right-click. If the problem occurs whether MacDrive is enabled or not, that would indicate a corrupt installation and reinstalling is necessary to fix it.

Stay away from registry cleaners if you do not have advanced knowledge on the Windows Registry's internals. Running that cleaner might as well be the reason for this problem to begin with because some valid entry for MacDrive might have been deleted/altered after being flagged as an invalid/erroneous entry by the registry cleaner thus breaking the MacDrive installation.

You most likely need to update your version of PMB - it is up to at least v5 as far as I can see - your video files may not be able to be read by your older version.
This Sony site has the newer version that is supported by Windows 7 - try downloading and installing it.

Some of those sites require activeX to be enabled. Check your browser > Tools > Internet Options > Security > 'Custom Level' and make sure you have activeX enabled or 'prompt'.

If you are running a firewall, there may be a setting there as well. Usually found in Privacy settings.

I get an error box saying I have "insufficient graphics capabilities" & "the video card and/or driver does not fully support DirectX 9" and I should upgrade/update one or both (Windows 10 has DirectX 12).
From other sources I believe there is an updated driver for my Intel HD 4400 graphics card but Intel say I should consult Dell before installing this update.
I would appreciate any advice anyone can give.

Answer:Unable to view/edit video clips uploaded from camcorder.

The error is because directx 9 and 10 drivers are needed.
Also DVD codecs are REMOVED from WIN10 they want you to pay $14 TO $100 for them all over again.  Windows media player is also removed as is windows movie maker.
You have to download and install directx JUNE 2010.
Extract to a folder.   Run DXSETUP.exe as administrator
AND Add back Lecgacy Direct play and DOT NET from control panel.
You have to install Legacy Direct play and DX9 and DX10 drivers from the Directx June 2010 patch.
You download the file and extract to a folder then run DXSETUP.EXE as administrator.
Before previous drivers will work in windows 8 or 10 you have to enable legacy features like DOTNET 2.0 3.5  and Directshow.  You must then install DIRECTX JUNE 2010 DRIVERS by downloading the file and extracting into a folder and running DXSETUP.exe.
Directx June 2010 which you download and extract to a FOLDER then run DXsetup.exe as administrator.

Our HR director has setup her Calendar to be viewed in Outlook 2000 by one of her counsels. I had her setup myself as well, and I get the same error. Any thoughts?

Answer:Unable to view delegated calendar file

Well...what IS the error?

Are you sure you made them the delegate? That's done under Tools-Options...and NOT via permissions.

A delegate is the only one that can "send on behalf of".

So, if you haven't done the "real" delegate thing, and you're just trying to view someone's calendar, then you need to do this:

Right-click the inbox and give that person permission to at least VIEW the inbox. This does not allow them to see the messages therein. Instead it acts as a "portal" to allow the person to get to the calendar, where you should right-click and set the desired permissions.

Hope this helps.

It's for a shared folder. I can connect with it as can my wife. Inside the folder are subfolders, each with video files and images. Each subfolder has a single image set to it via the proper Properties>Customize>Folder Pictures-Choose File method.

If I access the folder, the subfolders show the single image as the thumbnail as intended. However, when my wife accesses it, its the usual thumbnail collage of items within the subfolder. We've tried setting the images in the same manner from her account, however nothing happens. All we're trying to do is set the subfolders up so that when she opens the folder, each subfolder thumbnail has a specified image for it. Again, it works as it should for me, but not for my wife.

I suspect some permissions issue, however I've checked every possible setting. Public access, permissions, account type level, there's no apparent reason why this should be happening.

I am running WinXP Pro and when I use any image editor to open pics from "My Pictures" directory, I keep getting a "thumbnail" view, when I would rather have a "Details" view.

In windows explorer, the directory (all directories) is showing up as "Details", which I have set up as the default view in the folder options, but this problem only occurs when I choose "Open" from the "File" menu.

It is no big deal, I can switch to "Detail" view, but I would like to have that there by default, if at all possible. Maybe working with group policies can help, but I don't know where to go in the administrative templates.

Answer:I don't want to view thumbnails

Windows XP has folders designed for specific files for better (more like hinder) use. For example C:\My Music is designed to show Artist, Track Number etc (a bit like the list in WMP), and C:\My Pictures has the thumbnail views to see the pictures like in an album.

Since My Pictures is a default Windows XP folder I don't know if you can change the default, but I know it can be done with folders you create. There is an option in Folder options to change it to normal view. I'm not at home right now so I cannot check myself but I think the option might be something like Picture Tasks

I can't get my folders to preview the pictures inside it, nor can I appoint an image to show on the outside of a folder any more.
I tried everything I could think of and also tried the tut from here: Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable
Nothing changed and I am at a loss, why can't my folders preview an image any more?
Thanks in advance for thinking with me!

Hey guys,

after upgrading from XP to Win8, I've probably already spent hours removing most of the little bits and unnecessary pieces of UI changes they implemented. I'm pretty much done, but there's one thing left.

See, the problem is with the view and thumbnail functionality. XP would only display preview thumbnails of pictures if you rightclicked in a folder and selected View->Thumbnails. In Win8, I like to use View->Big symbols because I find the Medium symbols to be kinda small, but then of course Windows automatically starts creating thumbnails of pictures and previews of folder contents. Now I know I can prevent that if I just switch to a smaller icon size or disable it in Folder->View->Options->View Tab->check "Always show icons instead of thumbnails". But this change seems to be global, it prevents any thumbnail functionality anywhere on the computer. Seems kind of dumb if the only choice is between "if you want thumbnails just in certain places, you better get used to smaller icons everywhere" or "if you want big icons, you better get used to have no thumbnails anywhere", especially since that choice wasn't present in XP since the Big icons and Thumbnail view were actually the same in size

My question basically is: is there any kind of way for me to have Big Icons view while activating the thumbnails only in certain folders?

Answer:How to have the old XP behavior of view as->thumbnails?

Hello, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Sorry, but thumbnail previews is a global setting that is either all off or all on.

Hello again! I am having two very strange problems with my thumbnail view of certain files.

A. It seems that there is a gray overlay over files and folder which were made before a certain point in time.

Gray overlay on those folders and the pictures which were made before a certain date

B. For some reason, the images in a certain folder, which were made before another certain time, display a thumnail which is different than what the actual image is.

The image which is showing in the preview is the ACTUAL image of the file selected. The thumbnail of the file selected is a thumbnail for a different image in that folder

-Sigh- My computer problems are always so uncommon that they never seem to get fixed on this forum because no one has seem them before. Hopefully someone will know a way to fix this, because it is REALLY annoying.

Thanks in advance for any posts made. Hoping someone can help me :)

Answer:Thumbnails View Problems

Hi Linkhiei !

Run Windows Explorer (shortcut : windows key + e). Navigate to the folders for which the thumbnails are not displaying correctly. Go to tools => folder options => view. Check "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "hide protected operating system files". Find the hidden thumbs.db file (which you can now see) and delete it. The thumbnails should be recreated next time you'll display the folder. If that worked you can reset the folder options to what they were before.

I recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition (i'm aware that Apple hasn't officially released drivers for 8 yet, i'm still running the Windows 7 Boot Camp drivers and so far it seems stable).

I've ran into a little problem in the Explorer. As i'm using an SSD, i have my Windows partition fairly small (~50GB) so i keep all of my photos on my Mac partition and don't duplicate them over.
When trying to browse through these photos on the Windows side, i can see the file name and the icon, and they open perfectly in Windows Picture Viewer, but within Explorer they all show the same default Windows "Mountain by the lake" icon.

I've been into Folder Preferences and told it only to display thumbnails and not the icon but still no luck...
Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks for your help

Answer:View Thumbnails in Explorer

I am going to say that because the pics actually reside on OSX, windows is unable to create a thumnail cache. It does this to speed up the viewing time, however your windows really doesn't "own" the pics folder on OSX and may not be able to build this cache properly and therefore you would not have any thumnails. here is an excert from the mighty Wikipedia about it:

"Beginning with Windows Vista, thumbnail previews are stored in a centralized location on the system. This provides the system with access to images independent of their location, and addresses issues with the locality of Thumbs.db files. The cache is stored at %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer as a number of files with the label thumbcache_xxx.db (numbered by size); as well as an index used to find thumbnails in each sized database.
However, when browsing network shares with write permission, Windows Vista and Windows 7 store a Thumbs.db file in the remote directory instead of using the (local) central thumbnail cache. This can cause issues when deleting remote shares, as the directory will become locked for a period of time when selected as Windows Explorer automatically creates a remote Thumbs.db file.
Creating Thumbs.db files on remote shares can be disabled with a Group Policy setting"

Hope that makes some sense, it would seem that is the problem to me any way.

I don't know why, and I can't seem to fix it either. If I view a web page with clickable thumbnails, i can not see them. But if I look at the page information, I can see all the anchor tags for each picture. It happens using Netscape, Firefox and IE. It seems my computer is missing something to make these anchors actually show up as thumbnails on the web page.

I tried searching this forum to see if anyone else had this problem and I can't find it.

Hi, this my first thread here, i have read some of the other threads regarding .Bat files and running them ,but none of the suggestions have so far worked for me,

Here is the situation, i installed an old game R6Vegas2 to c:/games instead of the protected programe files(default install location) the game it's self works fine, but it's a mod for this game that uses bat files, teknor6vegas2.exe wich then injects it's code into the games .exe so i need to be able to edit the bat file and run it,

so far all that happens is the dos cmd window opens and closes within2 seconds nothing else
things that i have tried, disabled uac, taken ownership /full control
copied a sortcut to the desktop (.bat file) and changed to run as admin all made no difference at all,
in win xp it works without all this faffing around

Answer:Unable to edit/run a .bat file win7 sp1

teknor6vegas2.exe isn't a .BAT file. The way you wrote your post implies that this is a batch file, but its an executable file so you won't be able to edit it (not as a typically batch file anyway). Can you check your original post to see if you got the bat file name correctly?

I'm running Windows 98SE.

Following a big event I was designated the recipient of digital photos taken by several guests, with the task of picking "the best ones" and assembling a digital photo album. All told there are about 300 photos. However, many are similar shots. In order to be able to find and compare the similar shots, I need to have thumbnails of all the photos viewable at the same time. I tried the thumbnail feature in Windows Explorer, but for some reason many of the photos don't open as thumbnails, or take forever to do so.

Can someone please direct me to a photo viewing freeware or shareware that can show thumbnails and filename of all the pics. (As this is a one-time task, I'd rather not have to buy the software.)

Thank you.

I just upgraded to Windows 7 Enterprise having had used XP for years. In addition, I have an 8tb server networked with a large collection of movies. With XP, I made each folder a thumbnail (.db file) so that each folder containing the movie would have a picture of the movie cover. My HTPC is still running XP, and of course, can view the thumbnails just fine. With Windows 7, I have tried everything. Basically, i can't get it to show the thumbnail (.db file) which is contained inside each movie folder.

I have changed the folder options to "always show icons, never thumbnails" so that it will show thumbnails. I have changed the local group policy editor to make sure that windows has the proper settings. There is even an option to" turn off the display of thumbnails and only display icons on network folders." This is disabled.

Basically, I just want to look and feel of XP with flat folders previewing .db files that are contained within each folder.

Any help is appreciated.

I have Windows 8 64 bit, Windows 8 Photo Viewer and various applications (e.g. Lightroom) to process Panasonic Lumix RAW files in .RW2 format.

I can't find a way of displaying the image thumbnails in Windows Explorer. I've tried to install various versons of Microsoft camera codecs but they don't install in Windows 8 64 bit.

Is there a solution to this?

Answer:How to View Panasonic RAW (.RW2) Image Thumbnails?

The Microsoft Camera Codec packs come through Windows Update in Windows 8/8.1. I've just looked and it appears the last one was December 2013, so I guess it depends on how old your Camera is.

If you scroll down to the 'References' section at the following link, you can see what Panasonic camera's were added in that update and also all the camera's supported up to that point.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article (KB2899189):
Update adds support for many camera-specific file formats in Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1: December 2013

It's about time we had an ISO approved camera raw format standard, as it's looong overdue.

Can anyone suggest a way to delete a file from Desktop! I'm not joking.. I unzipped a folder that had a file with a really long file name... I have no idea how it got there.. I'm unable to open/ move/ copy/ rename/ delete that file.. In short it is unrecognized by the Win 7 file system itself...!!! I can only see that file but cannot do anything else with it. Pls suggest a way to delete the file..

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Unable to delete a file from Desktop in Win7

Hello Ginoy and welcome to Seven Forums.

It may just be a ghost file. Right click on the desktop and click on Refresh to see if the file goes away. If not, then see if restarting the computer will get rid of it. If still unable to delete the file you could try a couple of free tools. One is called Unlocker and the other is called FileAssassin.

Malwarebytes : Remove any locked file with FileASSASSIN

If you still can't get rid of it it may be malware. Suggest you run a full updated scan with your installed anti-virus suite. No AV program is 100% effective 100% of the time (if there was such a thing we'd all be using it.) So I'd also run a couple of free on-demand scanners. The more scans you run that come back "no malware found" the more likely your computer is without malware.

Windows Defender Offline (must be created on a malware free computer)

ESET Online Scanner

Answer:How come my View changes from Details to Thumbnails in Explorer for no reason???

I had the EXACT same problem. I've attached the text below on how to fix it.

Good luck
By default, Windows XP will remember the view settings for the 400 most recently used folders. After that, XP will begin overwriting the data of the oldest folder, and its view setting will be lost. The information is stored in the registry by two keys:

These keys can be modified to make XP remember more folder settings.

Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools--Folder Options--View--Advanced Settings. Ensure that "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked.

Open Regedit and go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell.

Right-click on "Shell", then follow to New--Key--DWORD Value.

Name this item "BagMRU Size" (without quotation marks, but with a space between BagMRU and Size).

Double-click BagMRU Size, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK.

Now go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam.

Create another BagMRU Size DWORD Value for "ShellNoRoam". Again, give it a Decimal value of 2000, then click OK.

You will have two "BagMRU Size" values equal to 0x000007d0 (2000).

Close the registry and reboot.

Windows XP will now remember 2000 folder view settings instead of 400

Always remember to back up your registry.

Let me correct that subject line a bit. It happens in almost all Sub Folders. For example, This PC is an odd one. Sometimes it's in thumbnail view, other times it's in detail view. I suppose that depends on how you start This PC.
This started about 3 weeks ago. I've been so busy with tech problems, at the time I never thought about it being a long term issue. Had I known, I could have looked at my windows updates to see if there was an update around that time. But if it was a Windows update, I think lots of users would be throwing fits, so it must be something that was caused by a setting in another program.
I use the detail view on ALL of my folders. Even pictures and music, if I'm looking at those in Explorer, I want the detail view. I have programs for my audio files and my image files - then I will use a different view.
Well, I remember in the good old days, at least in XP, you could go into Folder Options and make changes and there was a bo you could check to Apply these changes to ALL folders? It was wonderful. Windows 10 doesn't have that option. But I figure one of you has had a similar issue, and I also figure one of you has found a solution.
I change the settings in every folder that I open, but it doesn't stay, and I've looked at all the options in the toolbar - There doesn't seem to be any option to save that view, let alone apply to ALL folders. This is driving me mad.
So, have any of you had this problem? Have any of you found a way to change settings for fol... Read more

I have malware bytes instaled on my system and in general it is working very good. I prefer to use the fastStone image viewer and it has been working great until lately.
I am not open to do a full instal but if I can repair my OS I have all the discs but not sure how to repaire witout a full install.
I am posting a few screen captures as well as the reults from minitool box here, and thank you all in advance.

Answer:Windows 7 Thumbnails and Folders view NOT WORKING appear to have no AV installed...infection is a possibility, IMO.
Your errors center around 2 things...IE and your drives.  Controller errors on several drives add to my confusion.

I have a pc running on Win XP in office. As part of testing, i had to try and install an activex control packaged in a .cab file on a Windows 7 and Internet explorer 8 from an application we built. I connect to this Windows 7 machine using the remote desktop connection from my PC running on XP. But the install DOES NOT happen on the Windows 7 remote desktop. It just refreshes the screen and nothing else happens.
If i try to install the same thing on another Win 7 PC ( to which i connect directly and not through remote desktop ), i am able to install the activex control.
This issue is hurting me bad. Can you please help me with this and provide me a solution ?
I can give you more details if needed.

I ran into this too... there are several things Remote Desktop doesn't let you do... like intalling unsigned software, changing services, etc. ... you know, the stuff a hacker might do....

I have tons of folders with tons of photos and I would like to change the view so that all photos are displayed as large thumbnails, but I don't want to have to keep clicking that option in the view pane everytime I go into a folder, since I edit and delete MANY photos in many folders it would be nice if all photos displayed as large thumbnalis in ALL of my folders. I looked online and everyone said to go to Folder Option>View and select the option in there but there is no option to display folders/photos as large thumbnails.

Answer:How to changes windows explorer default folder view to large thumbnails?

Try right clicking on some blank space where the photos are listed
Hover over view and try different ones.

My PC running Vista Home Premium 32-bit had the Google re-direct virus which made my desktop wallpaper blank.

I have removed it, but I cannot change the wallpaper through Control Panel > Personalization > Desktop Background; when I look at the wallpapers stored in Windows Wallpapers, I see the file names but no thumbnails.

I have the same exact problem in my Pictures directory, none of my pictures' thumbnails show. How do I fix this?

The pictures load normally if I double click on them, I can start slideshows, etc., but they are not displaying correctly in explorer.

Whenever I view a folder which contains .MP4 (H264) video files in large icon view (shows thumbnails), Windows 7's Explorer crashes. Explorer loads for a few seconds, the green progress bar shows up, and then boom!, Explorer crashes. The thumbnails are not shown before crashing. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I tried setting Folder options to 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' (disables thumbnails) on the same folder with MP4 (H264) video files and Explorer doesn't crash if the MP4 thumbnails aren't shown. I tried testing in other folders containing other video formats (with 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' set to off) like .AVI/Xvid, without an MP4/H264 file, and Windows Explorer shows the thumbnails fine without crashing.

I have not currently experienced problems with other formats, only MP4/H264. The only media players that I have installed are KMPlayer and VLC Media Player which both do not install external codecs, AFAIK. The only external codec I have installed is CoreAVC, but I have been using CoreAVC for months (KMPlayer+CoreAVC is one of the first things I installed in Windows 7) without any problems (this issue just arose a few days ago).

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit.

Note: I prefer a solution that will not end up disabling video thumbnails for MP4 files. I still would like to see MP4 video thumbnails, if possible. If the video files themselves are problematic, I reckon Explorer should not crash and just not show the thumbnails.

Try reinstalling your KMPlayer and VLC player.

After that do system file checker:
Right click Command Prompt → run as admin → sfc /scannow
