document recovery

Question: document recovery

I have vista and word 7, I goofed and closed the document with a "NO" don't save. In Xp I could go in and do a search and find the auto save part and and least get back all but about 10 to 20 minutes of work. I cannot figure out how to do this now. I had to retype 5 hours of work because I screwed up. Is there any way to get to the auto save function after you have said you do not want to save a document?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a friend that has lost a few documents and i was not able to help her out, so i am reaching out to the major geek community for some help.

So, she had a bunch of documents in her "My documents" folder, and noticed that a few of them dissappeared and the only ones that were left were like 8 that were in alphabetical order.

She was able to do a search using the 'search hidden files' option, and she came across them in the 'Recent' folder and was able to open them. I am under the impression that the recent folder only has shortcuts, but she was making it sound like they were actually in there, either way she was able to open them up.

Then all of a sudden she said she went to the 'Recent' folder and noticed they were shortcuts and they would not open up any of the files.

I had her go through and make sure that her folder options were all 'Restored to Defaults' and 'Show Hidden Files' but to no avail...

Any ideas or thoughts?

Answer:Help with Document Recovery?

A couple of suggestions.

I assume that you have checked the Recycle Bin for any document that may have been deleted by accident.

If she knows the name, or part of the name, of any of her missing documents, have you tried a search for the file name, or part of the filename.

These are obvious steps and you have probably already tried them both, but just in case. Bazza

Answer:win 7 64 document recovery

I have no idea what you are saying. But I am guessing here that by "files" you mean folders, and that you want to recover files from a folder? Which folder would you be refering to? Folders in your user directory? For example, your "My Documents" folder? A little more information would be appreciated!

I was writing on Wordpad and my power went out. Fortunatly, I saw the lights flicker before the power was completely out and hit the save button. When I got back on, the document I was typing under came up but as a different type of document and in boxes rather than words. I can't copy it onto a rich text document like the one I was typing on before. The document type is now a text document. Can anyone please help? That document was extremly important!

Answer:Worpad Document Recovery

Have you tried opening the file in a low level text editor such as notepad? I have done that to corrupted word documents and successfully restored the raw text from it after digging through a bit of garbled mess. I would start there, open it up under notepad, then search through the mess for your text and create a new document with it.

I feel there must be a way to recover this. I'm still in shock, someone HELP ME PLEASE!!!

Let's trace. The original came to you in what EMail? I'm assuming that in that state recovery isn't needed. Did you then edit it in Word? Something else?

When closing an important word document (what was once 47 pages is now only 39) i accidently clicked the 'no' option on doy uowant to save?when i did that, apparently word also deleted all the backup copies of my file as well. For some stupid reason i hadnt saved since three oclock. How do i get back a version of my file autosaved (it does it after every ten minutes and creates a file, and its now deleted the file, so presumably i must be able to get it back somehow) as recently as possible? And also, why didn't microsoft plan for this? why make it so that if you ACCIDENTALLY click the worng option, it destroys all your work completely, instead of keeping the auto-saved file until it's sure you didnt want it? What kind of morons do they employ??i am very much upset by this. ive been crying. Please help urgently! it had to be finished for tomorrow!! i cant write it all again! There were diagrams!! HELP!!

Answer:word document recovery

Sorry. No sympathy. You "accidentally" clicked "no". What you seem to be asking is "Why don't Microsoft write software that reads your mind and does what you really meant to do instead of what you actually told it to do?"QuoteAnd also, why didn't microsoft plan for this? why make it so that if you ACCIDENTALLY click the worng option, it destroys all your work completely, instead of keeping the auto-saved file until it's sure you didnt want it? What kind of morons do they employ??When Word asks if you want to save the file, it is asking if you really want it. I don't think the morons are at Microsoft...I suppose they could have a "blonde" setting where the save dialog asks, "Are you sure", and "Are you really sure?", and "Are your really really sure?" etc but then you'd still get ditzoids saying "I accidentally clicked "no" six times! Those morons at Microsoft!"Quotei am very much upset by this. ive been crying.Makes a change from "HELP PLZZZ!"

I have a old 97 - 2003 word document but I am opening it with word 2007 enterprise. I need the file really badly but the file is showing up as a bunch of garbage, such as:

Xx 8?X!?? l ? ? | WS iuA???w? A?: g+-0Z??am/0= mN9P ?f@ F?z?8?ak<X a 9iɧ|?p, _K?Q ߩV`?? *$?O :GYA??QT 1T 0
C`Ix?ƦC>?

Before the file starts it asks for the encoding. I tried windows default, ascii, and several others but that doesn't work. I tried opening it on 2 different computers and with word 2000 but that doesn't work either. I tried opening with wordpad but that doesn't work either. Changing the font, and various other word file recovery tools don't seem to do anything. Is there anything that can get the word document back. Thank you for your help.

Answer:Word Document Recovery

I have two ideas... both are free programs:
Universal Viewer can open just about any text file: PDF, RTF, NFO, etc., and most graphics formats too like GIF, JPG, etc. However, you won't be able to edit the document. UV will allow you view and print the file (hopefully).
Open Office is a free, open source app released as a replacement for MS Office. It can open just about any Office file created with Office 97 thru 2003. There's a few different versions, Oxygen is one. It is an enhanced version of the standard Open Office.
These two are worth a try. You can also try something weird like trying to open it with Internet Explorer or Firefox. You never know....

I lost the entire contents of the My Documents folder when my system admin changed my login domain. Not sure why because the folder was on my hard drive, but whatever.

I ran System Mechanic 5 Professional and recovered most of them. My admin also installed Office 2003, upgrading from 2000. OS is XP.

I recovered the documents to a server instead of to my hard drive. The jpg, pdf, and gif files are fine, but the doc and xls files are not. When I try to open them, some work, but most look like code.

I've tried opening a new file and inserting the old file, copying and pasting into a new file being sure not to copy the final return, saving as an rtf. Nothing works. I tried Word's "recover text from any file" feature. Nada. I downloaded the demo version of Office Recovery's "Word Recovery" program, but then I just get a file with the word "demo" where the boxes were.

Any ideas?

Answer:Word Document Recovery

Yes, your sysadmin needs to move the files from your old user to your new user accounts... I don't really know anything about it 'cause I'm not on a network but definitely one of the symptoms opening files of "another user" is gobbledygook.

As a writer, I rely rather heavily on my OpenOffice software to keep my stories. Occasionally my computer blue screens but at this point, I don't worry about it because it isn't virus-related and I cannot afford a new computer.
I saved a 26-page story on OpenOffice Writer, and as soon as I saved it, it blue screened and restarted. I started it in normal mode. When I went to open the story again to make sure it saved okay, it prompted me asking for "ASCII Filter Options," including character set, default fonts, language, and paragraph break. When I clicked OK or Cancel, it said that my file was read-only. I never save them in read-only formats.
Whether I opened a copy or the read-only format, my story was completely gone. It was reduced to 13 pages of nothing but #, repeated over and over again.
I use a Windows 7 computer.
Is there any way to get my story back? This is rather upsetting.

Answer:Document Recovery after blue screen

You shouldn't ignore the blue screens otherwise you end up with problems like this. Can you restore the story from a backup? The file wasn't saved in it's entirety or was corrupted when the system bluescreen.

You can also check to see if there's an auto saved version of it by following this: http://www.ehow.com/how_5900734_recover-saved-files-open-office.html

I recently used Easeus data recovery pro to recover a book this guy was writing. He was using microsoft works to write his book. Upon trying to burn it to cd it suddenly dissapeared on him. I was able to bring the raw file back but they came back as word documents, (.doc) and not .wps extension that he was used to. Now it comes up when opening in word and in works, all jargon, stating this program could not be run in DOS mode, and wants me to select which encoding. My question is, are the files in any way repairable; being as they were corrupted during his attempt in burning them to disc and just simply disapeared. I have been at this for days and hate to keep spinning my wheels if this task is impossible.

I'm working on a Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server. We have 9 users in our office connect to this server to do everything they need to do. All users are having the same problem. There were some documents that got saved to the auto-recovery (this was several months ago). Since that time, every time we open a word doc, it shows the auto-recovery list on the left. when we close Word it asks:
"The document recovery task pane contains some recoverd files that have not been opened. Would you like to view these files the next time you start Word?"
Yes, I want to view these files OR
No, remove the files, I have saved the files I need.

We click NO to remove the files, hit OK and it tells us it "can't delete the file, can't read from the source file or disk.". then we have to click OK 6 times for each file that is in the auto-recovery pane on the left.

Any idea how to make this go away??

Here is the problem:
I have a Windows 2003 R2 Terminal server with 20+ users. When Word/Excel crashes for a user, it does the document autorecovery thing.
When another user logs in and opens Word/Excel, they get that last user's crashed document to show up for them with the option to save the autorecovered document. Good thing is they don't have the rights to do anything with the document so they ignore it.

Any idea why some one else's crashed document would show up for someone else?

Hi all,

I am running Windows XP Media Center with SP2 on an HP Pavillion a1610n. It is configured with two user accounts. One for me, one for the kids.

Yesterday I was working on a Word Document, I saved it to My Documents (in my account) and stepped away from the computer. When I returned a few hours later my daughter had somehow caused the pc to go into recovery mode and windows was reset. she claims it was a "Non Destructive" recovery.

After running through the recovery we found 3 things:

1) Both User accounts had been deleted (makes sense since Windows as reset) and a default HP_Administrator account was created.

2) The Kids User Folder under c:\\documents and settings has dissapeared (mine was still there)

3) The two Word Documents that I had worked on that day had DISSAPEARED!! <--- HELP!

A few things to note...I don't know what my daughter was doing, she claims she was logged into the kids accoutn and opened an email and Poof, magically the PC went into receovery mode. I'm guessing Virus or Spyware.

There is no sign of my files. Even a Data Recovery attempt using Disk Doctor didnt find the file.

if at all possible, data could be recovered by a specialist. not some type of software you would install unless you feel like spending a couple of grand. if you live in a metropolitan area you should be able to find one. they'll end up attaching your drive to a machine loaded with data recovery software which can pick up fragments in worst case and full file if you're in luck. issue is how many times has the drive written new data over where the old data was on the platter. too many writes and its gone forever.1 write or no write just a lost link and you could be in luck. by the way its not cheap so dont think of finding some bargain. last time i sent someone to a data recovery firm it cost them 300 bucks. so is your data worth it.? good luck

Recently, about a couple of weeks ago, my computer picked up a virus that was able to get past my security program and started to attack my operation system directly, forcing me to use the System Recovery feature on it to start over from square one. When I thought I had just about everything back into shape, although I had to learn about the administrator feature for the first time, when I went to the Documents and Settings and tried to open the folder that supposed held the documents I can use to restore them back, yet I keep getting a pop up saying access is denied. When I check it, it says that there is nothing in there, yet when I use Microsoft Security Essential to take a look, it shows that there are still files in there, and yet I get the same message when I try to delete it, move it to another folder or try to make it readable. Is there any other way I can convert the folder to my current settings or do I need to go to a specialist who can extract the data from the hard drive itself?

Hi,

I was working on a document that was located in a zip archive. I have 7-zip installed on my computer. I?m running Windows 8. I repeatedly saved the file in Word while I was working on it. However, I?ve since rebooted the computer and my file is missing. All of the ?saves? I?ve made didn?t seem to update the file in the archive. I understand that I should have extracted the file first before working on it; however, I received no prompt from Word 2013 that my saves were not being recorded. Perhaps the file was saved into some sort of temporary folder/file that 7-zip creates/works from.

Are my changes lost permanently? Does there exist a temporary file somewhere with my changes in it?

Thank you. This is a court document and I made substantial modifications to it, and I really need it back.

Answer:Document Recovery From 7-Zip-Archived Word-File

It may be in the drafts folder. This will, by default vary according to which Word version.
But, across the versions, open the Options in Word and find the save option. In the window which opens, it will list your various save locations for the variety of Word you are using.
Alternatively, if you know the name of the file, how about a search?

Answer:Hard Drive Crashed - Document Recovery

Sometimes you can do a fresh install of Windows on a new HD, add the same user name and install the same password. Then add the second HD and try accessing the protected folder.

If windows just wont allow you to access the folder on the second drive but it wasn't password protected, booting a Linux Live CD such as Knoppix may be able to access the data.

As the title says, every second time i open Excel 2003(opening Excel itself, not an Excel document) the document recovery pane opens. I have tried to open each of the doucments in the recovery pane then close them but the same ones still come back the next time. Office is installed on Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition and all the users use terminal server to access Excel etc. The same problem occurs just opening Excel on the server.

I also click on the show errors option and that tells me that 'no errors were detected in (File Name) no repairs were necessary'.

Someone suggested that it could be a problematic .xar file but when i do a search, i cannot find any xar files on the hdd.

Thanks in advance.

When saving a Word 2007 document as a webpage (htm, html), an extra folder is automatically created besides the hmtl document itself. This folder contains background information like pictures, wallpaper etc. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being created in the first place? I've got Word 2000 on another computer, and when I save my word documents as html files over there, that extra folder is not generated. The only time that folder is created in 2000 is if my documents contain pictures, wallpaper etc. In Word 2007, it is created all the time, even though my documents are just plain text.

Answer:Solved: Word 2007, saving document as html document: how to get rid of extra folder?

Managed to find the solution, it was very simple after all. One has to save the document as a filtered webpage and click "yes" when a box pops up warning you that you will use certain featuers which are specific to Office2007, such as the background. Then the document will save without that extra folder and files.

I have two questions regarding documents created in Word 2007...

1) Can links be created within a Word document? For example, can I click on and item my table of contents and have the document jump to that particular section of the document?

2) Also, is there a way to make sections of the document hidden until the user clicks a specific word or graphic in the document?

I'd like to specify a particular instruction and include a "Show example" link that would make a detailed example appear for those who needed the extra help.

Thanks everyone!

Answer:Word 2007 - Links within a document? Hide/Show sections of a document?

If you created table of contents through References - Table of Contents, you can hold Ctrl and click on the item in that table, word will take you there. This feature is standard.

Also, to navigate inside document you can use bookmark option.
Insert bookmarks. Word 2010 Bookmarks
Then insert Hyperlink - in the window select second tab "Place in This Document" and choose your bookmark.

As for hiding parts of document, I do not think that is possible.
You can create that in HTML document with javascript, but not in Word document.

I am running XP and Word 2000 and Nortons. Word will crash if you leave the document open for a while (there is no specific time frame) and then select close (icon). The error - Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. The details are: AppName: winword.exe
appver 9.0.0.3822
Modname: kernel32.dll
modvers: 5.1.26002180
offset 0001eb33

This has pretty much happened since I got this laptop. I have reformatted and reinstalled everything (due to another problem) and still have the same problem with word. I have used the same CD on other computers to install word and they do not have the same problem.

I use a variety of templates and plain documents in my work and can not pin point it to one template.

If you leave Word open with a document (no matter what size) and come back to it later this is when the problem happens. I started to get around it my saving first then closing, but this no longer works. The save completes and then I select Close and this is when it happens - you get the dreaded pause and then you hear the whirl of the computer and then you get the Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Firstly I could put up with it but is now just a nusiance.

Is there any free software out there that will allow me to scan a document and convert it into word/excel and allow editing?

Answer:Converting scanned document from image to a word/excel document

you are going to want to search for OCR programs.

Try "freeware OCR" in google or check out www.Softpedia.com

Hi all.

The other day whilst in the throws of fixing another unrelated problem I came across a strange and annoying Word Document problem.

When I bought this word document up it present a very unusual icon. It was grayed out and part of the title contained a ~$ then the name of the document.

When I tried to open it, the word document only opened up to the gray page just before it should turn white displaying the text, and there it froze.

Nothing worked after that! The freeze was so bad that the only way to close the window was to turn the computer off at the tower.

After rebooting I tried it again 2 more times with the same problem freeze occurring in the Word document.

Today I again found another document that caused the same problem, this time the icon for that document was normal but right beside this icon was another malformed grayed out ~$(name) icon.

When I tried to open either of the 2 icons I got the same freezing up problem, just as before.

I tried a previously suggested step in that I opened "Word" and from there navigated to where the bad files were located.

In turn I only hi-lighted each, and at the bottom of that window clicked on the arrow for the drop down box.

I was advised that one of the presented options was to repair the file. No such option was present.

So there you have it. Any advice on this problem please?

Regards

Answer:[SOLVED] Word document freezes computer and document is corrupted

Hi all.

Just to advise that I am going to mark this topic as Solved......to a fashion so to speak.
I may resurrect it at a later stage if the problem re-presents it's self.

In a nut shell. I spent a lot of time today searching sites and performing tests including searches on my computer program.

I ascertained that all the aforementioned "defective " Word documents originated in the same folder. After performing several search functions with the criteria as ~$.doc no other such files were found on my computer, other that the already mentioned.

All tests suggested would not repair the said documents.

I have now deleted the offenders and I will monitor the situation. If I run into problems again I will re-post.

Thanks anyway.

This might be kind of tricky.

We're trying to streamline our RFQ-to-Quote process, which currently utilizes a combination of digital forms and hand-written forms passed among several departments. My boss asked me to modify the RFQ form to save him some typing (because he has to retype all the information in the final Quote), and I--not understanding the complexity of the process--very stupidly told him that it could be done fairly simply using form fields and bookmarks. He's been kind enough to grant me a lot of leniency because for him anything would be better than the current situation, so as long as I can improve on what we use now, he'll be happy.

I thought about creating form templates for each of the departments, then as the original RFQ circulated from one department to the next subsequent forms would be appended to it to create a rolling document. I'm not too happy with the that idea; there's all sorts of room for user error. I thought about creating a single document template containing every department's form, but a) I don't want any single department to be able to modify information gathered during another department's process, and b) certain departments must generate a variable number of copies of their form.

I told my boss the best way to accomplish a secure and low-maintenance RFQ-to-Quote would be to create a stand-alone Quote Generator application, but we both agree the effort is not condusive to the timeframe by whic... Read more

Hello,
I used mail merger to create 25 letters to different locations and different people. The source used for the names and address's were from an excel file. I used "Edit Individual Documents" in order to get all the letters in one document. Now the problem is i need a backup of each letter on my computer and i have no clue if its even possible to save each page in the master document as a unique document. If not, is there a way of saving each unique document of a mail merger?
Thanks in advance.

On my previous computer with Windows 2000, I was able to make incremental backups of a Microsoft Word document while it was being created by me. The advantage of this was that if an "accident" happened and the document was lost or corrupted before it was completed or saved to a folder, the partially completed document could be retrieved from a special folder somewhere in C-drive. I was able to specify how often a new backup was created (ex.: every 3 minutes, ex.; every 10 minutes, etc.). It is possible that this special folder also contained backups of all previously saved Word documents, which were also being re-backed up every few minutes. -- I cannot find any reference to this on my new computer (Windows XP and Microsoft Word 2002) in the Windows search engine, or in the Word user interface "Help". I cannot remember how I found this feature on my previous (W~2000) computer. -- Thanks

I was working on a Word document that someone sent me by email in form of rar and saved the document. I now can't find the revised file and I have lost about 8 hours of work. Any ideas on where I can find this file? I looked in the email that was originally sent, but it is still the old file. I have also done searching on my computer with no luck. Help, I'm desperate!!! I have Word 2007. Please give me reply as soon as possible.

Answer:Cannot find the saved revised document in Word document

If you were only hitting "Save" and not "Save As" the document is likely, unfortunately, gone. You can try opening Word by itself and going through recent documents to see if it shows up. If you opened it directly from the email and the email was in Outlook, you might be able to find it in the Outlook Secure Temp Folder. To get to this folder, the easiest way is to send yourself a PDF file, open the PDF from the email then go to File | Properties and on the General tab (this is from memory, so I might be off a little bit) you'll find a location that you can click on. In this folder, you have a slight chance of finding the modified file. The only other option you have, that I can think of, would be digging through your temp folders hoping to find a .tmp or .doc file in there that has the content, but I give that about a .01% chance of happening. Good Luck!

Hello

I don?t know what you mean with laptop keeps sending the document but if you have this issue with office word or some other office application, try to check some forum where you can find discussion about similar theme.

I can not give you any precise answer but it is maybe because of office specific settings or you press accidentally some key on the keyboard and on this way interrupt symbols entering.

Hi....
I'm using word 2010.
I have a Mailmerge document (actually a company letter with header and footer, used by a package called "Cash4Windows" [C4W]). This document usually has the recipients name and address etc. inserted by C4W.
The document is a template - "xxx.dotx".
What I want to do is strip out the Mailmerge fields and save the document as a normal Word 2010 document, 'cos the User wants to have a blank standard company document available.
I've spent a long time fiddling with the Header and Footer to get just what the User wanted, and I know i could just cut-n-paste the Header and Footer into a new document, then save it as "xxx.docx", but when I looked on various help sites the normal method in Word 2010 seems to be
on the ribbon tab
Select Mailings
Select "Start Mail Merge"
Select "Normal Word Document"
then save the Word document.
I've tried this and it has absolutely no effect, as when I close and reopen Word and select the previously saved document, I still get the "Opening the document will run the following SQL command" splash screen!
I've tried saving the "normalised" document with various different extensions, but nothing seems to get rid of the SQL.
I've also tried opening the VBA editor (Alt+F11) to see if I can find the SQL, thinking that if I can delete the SQL it might cause Word to avoid the prompt, but I can't even find the SQL!!!
I know I'... Read more

Hi,

I work at a small non-profit and we have updated two computers with new computers running Windows 7. We use MS Word 2003. I have checked all threads on forum related to this issue, but nothing seems to correct our problem. I would be grateful for any help.

Description of issue: With a Word document open, one should be able to click "File" > "Send To" > Mail Recipient As Attachment", or any of the other mail options, and have the email composition window of Thunderbird pop up. What happens is that Word is attempting to send the attachment via Windows Live Mail. The computer basically freezes. If you try and abort or get out of Word, and error pops up stating you can't close Word until the email has been sent. Finally, you have to force a shut down of the computer.

Internet Explorer shows Thunderbird as default email client. I have check all of the other obvious places for setting the default email client, but I can't seem to find a conflict anywhere on the computer showing Windows Live Email as default client.

As a side note, this employee was using Outlook Express as their email client prior to the computer upgrade and all setting were imported into Windows Live Mail, which was initially used. The employee did not like Windows Live Mail, so I installed Thunderbird. It is used as the default email client and the only issue has been with Word. Additionally, I know that the document could be sent from Windows Explorer by right-cli... Read more

URGENT!! (Isn't it always?) I need to convert a multiple tab excel document to a word document. I read that I can save as a pdf, then convert to word but I have only Adobe Reader. If this can be done, is there a way to conserve the original format and the links in the excel doc?I would prefer leaving in excel but the customer needs a word document. Also, just in case I can convince to leave in excel -- is there a way to print the excel file as one document without printing each tab separately? If so, how do I ensure the formatting looks good to print as a regular 8.5 x 11 document? Thanks for any help.

I am a teacher in Tennessee and I need to find a software that will enable me to edit and change a scanned document. I have some old tests and worksheets that I inherited from the teacher that had my room before me. I would like to make some minor changes to the documents without having to retype the entire set of documents. (Things like change the date and the teacher name on the heading, etc...)

Is there a software out there that will allow me to scan a document in and then alter it? These are not copyrighted materials, so that is not an issue.

Preferably, I would like a freeware or shareware or trial version of something to make sure I can navigate it before I shell out a chunk of cash to purchase something.

As a teacher, it is important to me that my materials look professionally done, so I would prefer to edit them on a computer rather than use white out and pen.

You can use OCR, i.e text recognition. I'm not 100% sure if Adobe Reader does it, but Adobe Acrobat Pro definitely does. There's probably a few other free alternatives out there as well.

Answer:Word Document within another document

The only simple way is to go to Insert, Object, Create from file and choose to insert your file as a link (these are 2003 instructions - would be similar in 2007, though.) However, you will then get a questions about the file having links and do you want to update...every time you open the file.
You could also just insert some text and hyperlink it to the other file.
Finally, someone could probably write some VBA that would insert the file and update it every time you opened it.

I'm using Lenovo G460, running on Windows 7. Recently my computer has been running pretty slowly so I decided to do a system restore with OneKey recovery 7. I selected the default backup option. However, the backup was stuck at 18% and then a popup told me that there was an error. I couldn't start Windows from there on. I need advices desperately I would appreciate any help. Fyi, I had back up discs(3parts) too, which I tried after the disaster happened but when the system does not recognize my back up discs.  What should I do now? Any options other than bringing my laptop to a repair shop?

Answer:Recovery disc not working, default recovery in OneKey Recovery does not work too

Hi helpmeleh,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Can we first check if the disc will load,
   Here's how.
Make sure that the First DVD is in the computer,
Turn OFF the computer, Turn it Back on and start tapping F12 to pull up the Boot selection Menu.
Try selecting the CD/DVD and press Enter.
See if this will let you load the CD and load the recovery.

If it will not push either,

A recovery CD from Lenovo Support center may help but before going with that option, You might want to have the HDD checked, Because the HDD slow read .write and a Recovery from OKR that gives an error is a symptom of an HDD failure.

If the computer still loads the old OS you can download a Lenovo Storage Test
or If the computer cannot currently load an OS you might want to bring the HDD to a local Technician to have it checked.

If the HDD is proven Defective then it needs replacement,
If the HDD is still OK then you can call Lenovo technical Team and ask how to obtain Lenovo CD. Fees may apply

Regards
Solid Cruver

We have a corporate Enterprise with IE11 on Windows 7. We are using Enterprise Mode instead of "open intranet sites in compatibility view" which is now unchecked.

We want sites to open in IE 8 Document Mode instead of the Edge Default which occurs when we uncheck the intranet site compatibility view.

If I set her default font to Times New Roman it will stay for creating new documents from within Word. If she goes the other route mentioned above to create a new document it will always default to Courier. Also when she tries to save the document with the Save As item it defaults to txt instead of a .doc file. I am thinking there are two different templates for these two seperate ways of opening or creating a document.

Hi everyone, I know this must sound like a real stupid title, but please bear with me for a moment: Having wiped my R50p clean with the "Access IBM" button, I noticed that I only had a C drive with 20 GB of which much was in use. In Windows XP Disk Manager I saw that there was a whopping 55 GB on a hidden partition that I only had the option of to "remove", not to activate or anything else. Realising that this was the hidden partition with the IBM restore files, I was hesitant to take any action. After doing some research on several forums I found that the recovery part should only take up 20 GB, which corresponded somewhat to the fact that Disk Manager showed 42 GB of 55 GB to be "free" (if only I could use the free space!). In order to access those magnificent 42 free GBs on the 55 GB hidden partition, I first created a ThinkVantage recovery disc (strangely it was only one CD-R) and disabled IBM Predesktop Area in the BIOS. As a result, I proceeded with deleting the 55 GB partition and it became unallocated space, therefore allowing me to make it a new partition and assign a drive letter (in this case D), doing a "quick format (NTFS)" in order to be able to use the space available, and finally giving me the full 55 GB. Since I had preferred to leave the recovery files on the hidden partition, but had no idea how to access the useful other 42 GBs, I followed the abovementioned procedure. Now my question is whether it's possible to recreate another hidden parti... Read more

Answer:?? Restore Recovery Partition with Recovery Disc after deleting Recovery Partition

pvanedan, welcome to the forum, after reading your post several times I think I understand your situation as it is now. The answer is as follows; which you may not like sorry  You have successfully deleted the recovery partition in order to gain more space, that's the good news  The cd you have created is only a boot cd and not a recovery cd, this would be used to boot your ThinkPad and access a recovery backup which is stored on another hard drive, cd/dvds or over network. It alone is not able to recreate the recovery partition which you no longer have, that's the bad news  I would suggest backing up your files regularly and using an appropriate imaging software to backup your installation. Edit: What I don't understand is; why 55GB? The partition should have been around 4GB, maybe it was full of backups??Message Edited by andyP on 07-03-2008 07:30 PM

I know a BIOS update on my Latitude with Windows 8 and Bitlocker activated on the O/S drive triggers Bit locker recovery on startup. I don't have the recovery key and so am stuck. How to recover without the Bit Locker recovery key?

Answer:BIOS update without suspending Bitlocker has triggered a recovery and on start up I am prompted for the recovery key

The solution I found was to install the previous version of the BIOS, but without being able to boot into Windows, I needed to install the previous version of the BIOS in DOS. Some server products provide a F12 boot up menu option to roll back a BIOS update, but this is not available in my Latitude.

I downloaded the correct BIOS version (the additional info section made specific reference to it being installable from Windows or DOS). I prepared a bootable USB key (to a dos prompt) and copied the bios installer executable to the memory stick.

Because secure boot (UEFI) is enabled, it is not possible to boot up from USB key, so legacy boot mode needs to be enabled. There were 3 settings that required changing in the BIOS before I was able to boot from the USB key.

Once I was able to boot into DOS from the USB key and got to the DOS prompt, I ran the BIOS update exe. The laptop rebooted, installed the previous BIOS version and then rebooted again. I pressed F2 to get into the BIOS and changed back the settings as they were (secure boot UEFI). I then managed to boot into windows without being prompted for the Bit locker recovery key.

You able to export or view the Bitlocker recovery key by going to Control Panel -> Security -> Bit locker Management, and temporarily suspend protection (until the next reboot). It is possible to run a commandlet to specify the number of reboots bit locker should be suspended for.

You may find that installing the previous version of the ... Read more

I've got a z580 which came with pre-installed Windows 8.0

Following a Windows corruption I have successfully re-installed Windows 8.0 using OneKey to the original factory status and the z580 is functioning OK, having applied all Windows updates.

However I cannot create a recover disk becauase as soon as I click 'System Backup' in OneKey I get the message 'Current system can not support backup'.

What do I need to do to get OneKey to create a recover disk?

In my previous topic (gateway-laptop-with-ssd-not-find-vista-sp2-wont-start-pxe-e76 ) , I was unable to restart my Gateway 32bit Vista laptop, except by using the Gateway Recovery management Partition. and doing a "Recovery with automatic data backup."

This recovery worked flawlessly, and recovered Vista to its 2008 level, including 60 associated programs and Windows updates, and built an associated 23 gig BACKUP file which was stored in the top level of the Local Disk (C directory.

It included a top level directory folder named: 14-08-23 12:39 AM, beneath which were folders, the same folder names that Vista initially builds in its structure including; Documents, Google, Graphics, Intel, Perflogs, Program files, System Volume Information, Users, and Windows, along with additional folders that had existed in the previous version on my computer, such as AmiPro, Downloads, Quicken98, and other programs and folders of mine, built since the previous recovery when I'd replaced a failing hard drive with a Crucial SSD.

However, after recovering to this stage, I did not know the proper way to continue the recovery, how to get this backup structure back into the Local Disk (C structure in place of the one the recovery had built.

I thought the first priority would be to continue applying updates to the system using Windows Update. But I ran into a problem with Windows Update, so went ahead and used the standalone installs of SP1 and then SP2, but Windows Update is still ... Read more

Hi there people. First post so sorry if it's in the wrong place or anything. I've had as much of a search as I can and haven't found anyone with quite the same situation as me. The questions come at the end of the rambling background to my problem!!! Hope you can make it through to the end! My E520 recently just went beyond it's warranty and surprise surprise fairly soon after that I got a warning through ThinkVantage that there was a problem with my internal hard drive. When I googled the problem it said that the hard drive was going to fail and to replace it immediately.  As I (like an idiot) hadn't got round to backing up my computer properly (I'd saved all music, photos and videos to a seperate hard drive but hadn't done a Rescue and Recovery or Windows back up) I went out and bought a seperate hard drive to back up the computer and some disks to create the recovery boot disks.  When I went to the Q drive to do this I misunderstood the question about do I want to create a data back up disk. I thought this meant all my media so I said no and created just the boot recovery disks.  So my question (told you I'd get there) is this. When I replace the internal hard drive and use the boot disks to install windows will I then be able to use the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery to restore my computer to it's former glory? Or will the fact that I'm not restoring the Lenovo skin (sorry if my terminology is wrong here. Not sure what to call it) ... Read more

There are discussions on creating recovery disks with OneKey Recovery 7.0. But my G500 is  with win8.1 and Onekey 8.0. I didn't see it support creating CDs. And when I tried to create such a recovery image, OneKey 8.0 said it needs 90G space. It looks like OneKey will backup all files from my C disk. I just want to create factory recovery disks, in case the HDD failed. Can anyone tell me how to create such disks? (It doesn't make sense to spend 60$ to order such disks from Lenovo)

Hello - please bear in mind that I am not technically proficient, but in fairness i don't think one should be.  As the Lenovo doesn't come with a back-up or recovery disc, I obviously need to make up my own.  I thought that the OneKey recovery system would lead me through it (it says it's "easy-to-use"), but right away I'm confused:  what's the difference between "System Backup" and "System Recovery"?  I keep reading the blurb and I've read the "Help" file, but I'm not getting any closer to understanding  The System Backup seems to require 98.9 GB space, which obviously the hidden drive doesn't have.  I'd need a stack of DVD-Rs for this (I was kind of hoping two or three) or a whole new removable drive  -- does this seem right?  But, again, what am I looking for, a System Backup or a System Recovery?  On my old Acer, it used to lead you through this step by step and it was incredibly simple.  Now, it seems the only simple thing is me.  Any patient help would be much appreciated.  Thanking in advance, Adam K.

Answer:completely lost - Creating a recovery disc for IdeaPad Z580 (and OneKey Recovery)

They are similar. One difference is that if the disk is defective you cant use OKR anymore. Thus you can't do any restoration yourself. You will have to send in your unit to Lenovo to have the disk replaced and your system restored to factory default. You don't need a stack of DVD-Rs to save your backup ... System backup files can be saved in an external Hdd drive plus the creation of a Repair DVD disk for startup and restoration purposes.

A few days ago out of the blue, my laptop began to take a very long time at the login welcome loading screen. Even after that, it gets stuck at a black screen with only the cursor (which you can still move around).  This all takes about 15-20 minutes, after which the desktop loads.  The happens when I shut down the computer and restart it, but not after awakening from hibernation. So for a while I only used hibernation instead of shutting the computer off.I eventually got tired of this and decided to try to restore the laptop to factory default using the built in one key recovery.  The problem is that when I try to get the computer to boot into recovery mode, either through restarting from the application or booting from shut down by pressing the one key button, it still hangs like before and just loads windows. I'm currently running Windows 7 (what was originally on the laptop). I'm also wondering of there is a way to boot into the one key recovery environment from a USB instead, maybe that could be a solution around this. If anyone could kindly provide steps on how to go about doing this, I think that it would be worth a shot!Anyone have any other ideas for how to fix this? Help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Lenovo Y570 hangs when loading desktop; One key recovery not booting to recovery mode

Do a boot time analysis using event viewer by following this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/174750-boot-times-monitor-event-viewer.html I think there's no way to boot to the One Key Recovery that is stored on a USB. However, you can clean install Windows 7 from a USB boot by following this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html. Don't forget to make a factory reset discs using OKR software within this location C:\Program Files\Lenovo\OneKey App\OneKey Recovery\OneKey Recovery.exe (at least 3 are needed when I did mine).

I recently created Recovery Discs in Windows XP, but when I insert Disc 2, it always says that it is the incorrect disc so I cannot continue the factory restore. Now I'm trying to restore by booting into the Rescue and Recovery on my hard drive, but it cannot find the hidden factory partition on the hd. It also now says that the restore had a "convertion" error when it wouldn't recognize disc 2 and will not let me try to look at my hard drive to restore anymore. If I use the RR boot disc, it will let me try to restore, but it finds nothing restorable on the HD.I did look at the hard drive and see 2 partitions with one being a IBM_SERVICE partition with 3.9GB total size and 2.9GB free space. Please help, thanks.

Hi All, Okay, I have been spinning my head, I have an OEM version of the Rescue and Recovery and Product Recovery disk from IBM, since the T43 that I got from someone, was wiped with a messed up XP loaded onto it.  Thus, I figure that I was restore the T43 back to factory condition. However when I have run thru disk 1-7, I get this dreaded message 'IBM Product Recovery Failure During the Convertion Phase'. Any one have any suggestions as I have run it three times and all loaded up until after the 7th disk, I get this error message when the system reboots after loading the final disk. I rather try to keep it Factory OEM, but I'm thinking, myabe I should just re-install XP on a reformated HDD, but more of a hassle to try to reload all the drivers and maybe some missing DLL files too... Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Now my message says " IBM Product Recovery Failed to restore your system" ....so what next??? I am at a lost and I really don't want to re-load Win XP directly.

Hi.I have an IdeaPad 310 that shipped with a 2TB HDD that I would like to replace with a 512GB SSD.After speaking with Lenovo support i was under the impression that I should be able to use OneKey recovery to create a USB recovery image, swap the drives over and use System Retore to load a factory fresh OS on my SSD. I have prepared the Recovery USB drive. I am in the process of trying to initiate the OneKey Recovery system restore. This is where i run into problems. OneKey does not pick up my USB drive recovery image.Ok - perhaps the USB drive is not configured as a bootable device. I have used DiskPart to reformat the drive to NTFS format and make the boot partition active (diskpart active). My USB drive is too large to format as FAT32...NTFS is not compatible with UEFI...(?)... So in the BIOS I have selected Boot Mode as Legacy..., Disabled UEFI... USB is enabled. Now when i run OneKey recovery --> System restore... UEFI network boot does not start up, but i receive an error that no OS was found, remove drive and restart (or words to that effect..). What next? Do i need to Format in FAT32 in order to boot from the recovery drive?

I have the same problem.
Recently I updated my PC from windows 8.1 to windows 10.After almost a month I returned back to windows 8.1 from windows 10.
When I tried to install dell backup and recovery (Backup-and-Recovery_Application_64M9D_WN32_1.8.1.71_A00) I got factory error 5.
I cannot refresh my PC from windows also. I am getting the error “could not find the recovery environment”.
Now in command prompt
1. reagentc/info

2. reagentc/enable

3. Exit and reboot.
After the reboot I tried to install dell backup and recovery again. Then also I got the same “factory setup error 5”.

Then I checked the reagent/info in command prompt after reboot. It shows it is disabled.

Please help me.
Thank you

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a Dell Windows RT tablet from someone. It had the problem of not starting anymore. I managed to get my hands on a Windows RT 8.0 Recovery USB Image for this type of tablet. I used a Imaging tool to install this image on a USB drive.
I booted with this and I could access the Advanced recovery options. I started the Command Prompt and launched Diskpart. I saw all of the partitions where gone. So I used Diskpart to re-install all of the partitions using the Microsoft standard.
It looks like this:

convert gpt
create partition primary size=450
set id=DE94BBA4-06D1-4D40-A16A-BFD50179D6AC
gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001
format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows RE tools"
assign letter=T
create partition efi size=200
format quick fs=fat32 label="System"
assign letter=S
create partition msr size=128
create partition primary
shrink minimum=4200
gpt attributes=0x0000000000000000
format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows"
assign letter=W

gpt attributes=0x8000000000000001
format quick fs=ntfs label="Recovery image"
assign letter=R
rescan
exit

All went well. After recreating the partitions, I used DISM to deploy the *.wim image on the USB drive to the Windows partition and installed the bootloader afterwards. The tablet was fixed after this :) I installed Windows RT 8.0 and updated to Windows

The partition with the recovery files is there, as well as the folder HDDRecovery. I did add some files to this partition, could this be the problem ?

Thanks for your help.

No. if you didn?t change partitions structure this should not be the problem.

Question is: does Toshiba recovery disc creator start or not? If you cannot star this tool it has nothing to do with recovery files.
Can you find this file - C:\Program Files\Toshiba\TOSHIBA Recovery Disc Creator\TRORDCLauncher.exe ?

Hello, I just migrated my X240 OS (Win8.1) from HDD to SSD, and swapped the HDD with SSD. Everything went smooth, so instead of the 500GB HDD I now had a 500GB SSD. However, I thought it might be best to start 'fresh'and do a reset to factory settings. On the SSD (a clone of the HDD) I see all partions, including the Recovery partition. However, if I attempt to reset to factory settings, I get the message that Windows could not find the Recovery environment. I did make a recovery USB flash drive, but it doesn't help at all. Also, booting from the recovery USB drive does not work -the screen remains black when I try to boot from it. So, even though I still have the recovery partition and though I have a recovery USB, I don't seem to be able to do a clean install. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong or how I can do the reset? If my recovery partition/USB flash drive fail, can I get a Win8.1 DVD/download from Lenovo perhaps? After all, I have a legitimate Win8 version and I think I took all reasonable precautions by creating a recovery USB flash drive... Any help is appreciated. Many thanks!

Answer:Cannot reset X240 to factory settings with Recovery partition / USB Recovery drive

Following up on my post, I finally managed to do a clean install/reset to factory settings using my "old" HDD drive (the original drive from which I cloned to SSD) in an external casing via USB. So apparently the Recovery partition on the HDD was functional. However, I'm still not able to make a functional Recovery USB flash drive. I already made 1 in the past, and I just re-did this, but when I try to boot from the recovery flash drive, I just get a black screen and nothing happens. I noticed during creation of the Recovery flash drive, that I cannot select the option to copy the contents of the Recovery Partion to the flash drive. That's why the size is so small I guess: only a few hundred MB whereas the flash drive is 32GB in size. I presume this is the reason I cannot use/boot from the Recovery USB flash drive. Does anyone know why I can't create a proper USB Recovery flash drive?  All help is appreciated!

My T61's Rescue and Recovery software in WinXP can't recognise/use the Vista's ServiseV002 partition to go back to factory settings.  I tried both in the pre-boot program and the Rescue and Recovery  in windows Xp, but both of them can't get to the hidden partition to go back to factory settings. Hi Folks,

I finally got round to buying a USB DVD drive in order to create recovery discs for my NB200-10Z. I got the following:

* Samsung SE-S084C, External USB 2.0 Slimline 8X DVD Writer, Black

I have twice tried to create a recovery disc and am now left with two trashed DVDs. The error codes in the error window are:

Error Code: 0E01B5-26-2A040803
Error code: 02016F-3C-00000000

The first time the burning was stopped, the second time the verify failed.

Can anyone shed light on this?

It seems that DVD-R mediums working good instead DVD+R?

I bought lenovo thinkpad X230 in January 2013. I made a recovery USB on a 16 GB pendrive. I bought a windows 8 pro upgrade offer as well. But i did not install it at that time and kept it for future use.  About a week ago I installed windwos 8 on my system in dual boot mode making a partition on primary HDD.everything went ok with only problem that my windows 8 did not activate. I was ok with that. But when i tried F11 recovery function, it was not working. So i tried factory reset through recovery USB i created earlier. It opened up and said BOOTMGR missing. Later with some research I realized that i didnt make USB active (bootable) before burning it.(Though this is ridiculous considering, tools provided must have done that. Like when you make windows bootable.) With all this(and me panicking), I tried backing up my data with image i created through R & R tool. After back up, I lost my recovery partition on HDD. And I guess i accidentally deleted System_DRV partition as well.  Though my computer is running fine. I need a bootable media. it would be great if you can provide it. Also if you can restore my comp to factory setting with recovery partition, it would be great. Please help me. Thanks in advance.
