external monitor display flicker and disconnection

Question: external monitor display flicker and disconnection

hi,

Im having a problem when i connect my laptop with external display.
My laptop is HP tx2(12" display) with windows vista sp2 and my external display is an LCD tv of Onida(Xaria 22")

When i connect my laptop to the LCD tv, the connection is ok... display comes properly....resolution is also good...
but after some time of using it(either watching videos or even normal browsing) the display flickers and then gets diconnected(with the disconnection sound or tone) and automatically gets connected again.
sometimes after auto re-connection the resolution also gets changed....this is really annoying..

Iv used the help section... they asked me to increase the flicker rate to atleast 75 but my laptop has a max freq of 60hz only. iv also applied max resolution to the screen...but the same thing always happens again..
then i also connected the same lcd tv to my another laptop(hp dv6000, 15.4", vista sp2) and the same problem never comes. even the flicker rate of that laptop is max 60 hz. both have same resolutions also

iv tried all that i cud.... advise please.....

Preferred Solution: external monitor display flicker and disconnection

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I connect my Dell XPS 13 9350 laptop with QHD display to an external monitor through the DA200 USB-C to HDMI connector the external monitors flicker constantly (laptop is fine-no flickering). Sometimes it works for like an hour then starts to flicker or longer so its not consistent. Below are the troubleshooting steps Dell has walked me through (including sending me a new DA200 part) to no avail:
- Dell has sent me a new DA200 USB C to HDMI part
- They have upgraded the Thunderbolt drivers and all other relevant drivers to latest ones (as of June 15 2016)
- I have tried on different monitors (5-6) and tried different HDMI cables.
Dell doesnt seem to know what to do now. THey have refunded my DA200 part purchase and told me to buy a separate HDMI to USB-C cable to test. If that fails it seems they will replace the motherboard. They say it could be an issue with the external monitors not being compatible with QHD, but this is not documented anywhere (they admit) and I havent heard anyone else having this problem on the internet and surprised every single person using this setup has QHD external monitors. This is an unworkable situation for me as I work in PC labs all day connected to external monitors.
Any advice?

Hi all, Just got the brand new replacement unit a week ago, no random shutoffs so far, but I ran into another strange problem today! When I arrived the office this morning, I attached a normal 15 inch external monitor to the VGA port (a HP LP1965, 15 inch, 1280 x 1024) in order to have a second monitor to work with, every thing worked perfectly fine, however, after I disconnected the monitor this afternoon, the GPU acticity all of sudden goes crazy, the GPU indicator in the system notification blinks about every second and my GPU activity monitor (a windows desktop gadget) shows periodic peaks and the systems temperature stays about 55C which is 10C higher than normal idle temperature, although there isn't any program that is using the GPU. I rebooted the computer both warm and cold, reinstalled the Nvidia (clean re-install) and optimus drivers, but nothing helps, unless I go into the BIOS and deactvate the Nvidia GPU completely. But If I change the BIOS setting to optimus again, the same situation happens again. Also, if I re-attached monitor back to the VGA port again, the strange GPU activity will disappear and the system temperature will go down to the normal idle temperature around 45C. But no matter how I disconnect the display, i.e. straightly pull the cable or first deactivate the monitor on the Nvidia control tool or windows display setting and then disconnect the monitor, the GPU will go... Answer:strange GPU problem - GPU doesn't go off after disconnection from an external monitor

The problem was the Windows 7 NVIDIA GPU widget that didn't support optimus. Shutting down the widget stopped all of the erroneous activity.

External out using VGA and my Acer AL2216W shows flickering especially when there's movement on the screen (animation/video running). By flickering I mean thin lines running across the screen. Not thick enough to be a hindrance but very noticeable especially in videos.I originally thought it was the VGA out's fault. Turns out this only happens when I'm plugged into the AC. When I'm running off the battery there's no flicker. This happens no matter which wall outlet I use or surge protector.Changing power adapters with my room mate's didn't help either (he has the same model). Seems it's the power unit inside the laptop?

Answer:Y410 External Monitor Flicker w/ AC

*Where's that edit button*...The problem occurs on my room mate's Y410 as well.I'm guessing it's due to improper shielding inside the laptop.Does anyone else have this problem? Is this something that Lenovo guarantees an easy fix for if I shipped it in aka is Lenovo aware of this problem?  Reason I ask is because this is my sole computer (no desktop). So I will be without a computer if I get this RMAed.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1012 running Windows 7 Starter SP1 and I've got it hooked up to my Protron 42" LCD screen with HDMI cable. I changed the flicker rate to 70 Hertz without checking the Proton's maximum flicker rate - yeah, that's really SMART - so now I've got an issue with my external display.

It worked okay for second but then my laptop screen turned black and the external display reads "Signal Out of Range" (duh, the Protron works only up to a 69.8 Hertz flicker rate, which I SHOULD have checked BEFORE changing it, but what's done is done -_-).

Now, when I plug in the HDMI cable, my laptop screen goes to black and the external display still reads that same message. I can't change the flicker rate without seeing the menu on my laptop screen.

Any advice on how to change flicker rate back to 60 Hz?

Answer:External Display NOT WORKING - Need to reset flicker rate

Hi mc4wit and welcome to seven forrums, I would connect the hdmi cable and press and hold the windows key and press p once and then press the enter key. Now you should see your laptop screen. Now you can change the flicker rate. Hope this makes sense

When I switch between my home and work docking stations, the external monitor flickers.  I have tried what is recommended in this link:
www.dell.com/.../EN
But I don't have it plugged to the display port.  Both monitors are connected via DVI.  When I restart my computer there are no problems.  Only when I come out of sleep mode when changing docks.  The external monitors are different.  Both dells.    Video card driver is up to date.  Bios is up to date. The video card is Intel HD graphics 520 (driver 20.19.15.4531).  Display is Dell E2414H.  The dock is PR02X  F310C A03.  I have changed the monitor settings from auto detect to DVI input.   Also I disabled DDC/CI.
I believe this is a video card driver issue although it could be bios related.

Hi, I own a W510 updated with the latest lenovo drivers. The problem I have is that when I use an external monitor connected via the VGA port I see horizontal lines moving across the screen, which I can only describe as flicker. I've seen this with two 22" 16:9 monitors already - one Lenovo and one Packard Bell. With the Lenovo monitor I see that in the NVIDIA Control Center the refresh rate is set to 59 with options 60 and 75 available. With 75 the flicker is still there but not that apparent. I can't set to 60 because it automatically reverts to 59. If I however connect the same monitor via the DisplayPort to DVI connector there is no flicker and the refresh rate is set to 60. With a third Lenovo screen, which is I think 15 inch 4:3 I don't see any flicker. Do I have a defective VGA port? Is this a driver issue? Should I contact support?

Hi,

I'm wondering if someone possibly help as I'm not sure where to go next.

I have a Dell U2311H monitor connected to a XFX Radeon 6850 via its DisplayPort and I'm having problems with random flickering where the monitor picture goes black for a few seconds.

I have another monitor, an old HP, connected via DVI and a 1080p Sony LCD TV connected via HDMI.

I have had the Dell and HP monitors connected via DVI for months without any problems but I wanted to extend my Win 7 desktop to all 3 displays and I believe you can't do that using DVI, DVI and HDMI, hence why I want to use the display port.

I have tried 2 different displayport cables, so I don't think it is that. I don't have another gfx card or monitor to try to eliminate from the process.

One thing I did notice is that if I change the resolution from 1080p to 720p it seems to fix the problem. I'm wondering if it could be something to do with the displays running at different resolutions? Although I did try both the TV and Dell running at 1080p but there was still a problem.

Any suggestions greatly received,

Thanks

Answer:Display port flicker on Dell U2311H monitor

Hi,

I happen to see this thread when searching for solution for the same problem. I am using 3 monitor display setup, using U2311H connected with displayport to HD 5770 graphic card and 2 samsung 940b monitor connected with DVI to the same HD 5770 graphic card.

U2311H flickers (screen become totally black) for 1 to 2 sec at random times and return to normal.

I did not try any other display port cable yet because I did not have time to buy another one.

Seems like adbarnes have the same problem, I am wondering if it is because we are using 3 display setup? or display port? Or maybe there is something wrong with U2311h?

I have been using U2311H for some time, this flicker problem happens recently.

adbarnes, have you discovered how to solve the flicker problem?

My dell U2311H is using 1920x1080 (recommended) resolution
My samsung 940B is using 1280x1024 (recommended) resolution
(all using the recommended resolutions)
using win 7

Thanks everyone for helping

I recently purchased an XPS 15 9550 with i7, 16 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, and GTX 960m dGPU that I have connected to a 27-inch QNIX qx2710 2560x1440p external monitor. I have this connected through a Cable Matters USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 to DVI-D adapter and cable.
The monitor and everything seem to work fine at 60hz, except for every time I unplug, turn on, or restart the monitor/computer the first five or ten minutes of use is plagued with constant screen flickering and flashing. After ~five minutes the monitor seems to stabilize and will only rarely have a single screen flicker.
I have read other forum threads describing similar issues with different monitors/cable setups and that there is likely an issue between the wifi card and thunderbolt port. The common recommendation is to turn down the wifi output percent to 75%, however the Killer wifi card on this computer does not have an option under advanced settings to turn down the power output. Has anyone had any luck doing this on a recently purchased XPS 15 with the Killer wifi card?
The cables and adapters are new and the BIOS and all drivers are up to date. Other than the wifi issue, does anyone have suggestions or solutions to this screen flickering problem?

Hi, I recently bought a 22" LG Flatron Monitor and a Toshiba Satellite Pro Laptop and have a flicker happening on the LG monitor whenever the laptop is plugged into an outlet. The flicker immediately goes away when the laptop is running off of battery power. The resolution is on the native 1920x1080 and refresh rate is 60Hz (can't change it). I have had this problem before with a HP laptop and BenQ monitor. The problem only happens to me at work (not at home), so I believe that is has to do with electrical noise on the circuit at this particular location. Anyone know of ways to get rid of or filter this noise to eliminate the flicker?
Thanks

I have a Dell Latitude E6410 running Win 7 Professional (64-bit). I have it connected to an external monitor. Whether I choose "projector" or the option to show on both screens, the monitor on the laptop will flicker. Here's more specific information that may be helpful:

The laptop and a desktop are both connected to a KVM switch. I set the laptop to "projector" mode so that it will, of course, project on to the main monitor. When I am accessing the laptop via the KVM switch, I see its display on the main monitor just fine. However, if I switch to the desktop, the laptop screen will intermittently come on and off. This happens over and over. That is what I describe as the "flickering." It's very annoying as I work from home and each time the laptop screen goes off and on, I hear a beep in my headset.

The laptop uses Intel HD graphics. The driver date is 01/30/2013 and version is 8.15.10.2993. The laptop resolution is set to 1024 x 768 with a refresh rate of 60. Windows does not find a newer version of the graphics driver when doing a search. The laptop will also give this message when flickering:

Optimal Resolution Notification
This is not the optimal display resolution for the primary display device. The optimal resolution is 1280 x 800. Click this notification for more information.

Keep in mind this ONLY happens when the laptop is NOT being accessed on the main monitor on the KVM switch. If it is, its screen does NOT flicker.... Read more

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 15 7568 laptop that is less than a week old. I also purchased a Dell HDMI to VGA adapter so that I can use an external monitor with a VGA input as a 2nd screen.
Whenever I connect to the external monitor my laptop screen, not my external monitor screen, flickers a couple of times a minute. I have checked all the connections of the adapter and VGA port and they seem fine. It appears there is a problem that is encountered when I plug in the external monitor that causes the laptop screen to flicker occasionally.
If anyone has any suggestions to fix this issue it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hello, I would love to ask for some help!
I've recently purchased the newer Dell XPS 13 9360 Non-touch (not the 2 in 1) and am having some trouble with using an external monitor. The screen (on the external monitor) keeps on flickering and has a very unstable connection.
I've searched and found that apparently lowering the power output of the WIFI network adapter can fix this problem.
The problem is that the current XPS's wifi adapter doesn't allow the power output to be changed. The previous fixes were geared towards intel wifi adapters.
The general power settings for the computers doesn't show wifi card power controls.

I have updated all the drivers for the computer including the wireless adapter. Still the options doesn't change.

Has anyone found a way to get a stable external monitor to work with the Killer Wireless Adapter cards?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:XPS 13 9360 External Monitor Flicker with USB C - HDMI Adapter [Killer Wireless Adapter]

For what it's worth: For me (XPS 13 9360, QHD, i7, 16 GB, Killer WiFi), external screens are perfectly stable, even with wireless being on relatively high throughput load, albeit not high power (energy) load.
I am connecting both HDMI and DisplayPort displays, each with cheap native USB-C adapters (i.e. through Thunderbolt). I also have full success with a Dell DA200, through its built-in HDMI graphics adapter.

Having a very strange (and annoying) issue with the display. I can only see the display on my Twist after connecting it to an external monitor first. If I do not, all I see is a black screen. No cursor, no anything. If I connect it to an external display via the display port to VGA adapter, it works fine. If connect it to an external display and then disconnect my external display, the display will remain on the Twist. However, if I reboot, I lose the screen again until I connect it to an external monitor. I made sure that "PC Screen Only" is chosen in the Fn+F7 option. This is obviously a serious problem. This is for company use and our users will not have a VGA monitor handy with them where ever they go. I checked the hardware manager and all the drivers are installed with no warnings.

Answer:Lenovo Twist display issues - No display unless I connect to an external monitor

Figured out a work around and narrowed down the problem. If I hit the Second Screen key (F7) after booting, it will go PC Only as the first choice and bring up the display on the laptop after a few seconds. The puzzling thing is why it seems to choose the external monitor as the default monitor on boot, even if it is not conected. I've tried running System Updater to make sure that I have all the latest drivers. All the display settings appear to be correct.

I have a Dell XPS 13 laptop running Windows 10. I have just purchased a Dell U2515H monitor which I am waiting for delivery for as we speak. I believe the monitor has quiet a few inputs however I am not 100% sure which lead to get to connect them both and which port I use on the Dell Laptop. Looking on the left hand side of my laptop there is a port with a lightning sign next to it, is that called Thunderbolt? and is that my monitor/display port? and what lead do I need? it looks like some sort of micro socket!

Hi, I have two major issues. I'm connected to an external monitor using a display port to hdmi converter, and an hdmi to dvi cable. When I am on "Energy Saving" (switchable graphics) mode, the external nomitor blinks every 5-10 seconds, but it is perfectly fine when I am under "High Performance" (switchable graphics) mode, so I'm not sure that it's the cables/adapters/monitor that I am using. The second is I cannot change my brightness using fn+home/end when I go through this process: In "Maximum Performance" (power plan) mode (while plugged into ac)unplug acGo into "Maximum Battery Life" (power plan) modeplug in acplug in external display to displayportGo into "High Performance" (switchable graphics) modeuntil I change back into "Maximum Performance"(power plan) mode then back into "Maximum Battery Life" (power plan)mode then back into "High Performance" (switchable graphics) mode. This is a bit annoying, but at least I found the steps to temporarially work around the problem ... edit: Okay it happend to me again, but i can't fix it (haven't tried a reset though, but i don't want to bc I just started the computer and that's ridiculus). Also, I can change the brightness fine when the computer is in Energy Saving" (switchable graphics), but I get the blinking problem, which is why I mentioned it earlier.

After the recent Windows 10 update, my wife's laptop no longer displays on the external monitor. All was well before the update.

I am comfortable that Windows sees the monitor because clicking on Display Settings shows two displays. If I unplug the HDMI cable, only one display is shown.

I have confirmed that the monitor works by trying it with another laptop. I have also changed the HDMI cable between the laptop and the external monitor.

Device manager reports that I have the latest display driver installed.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Do you see anything? What happens if you use the display device switch function FN+F5?

I don?t know how you have managed to set the external display as a primary display because on my notebook this option is grayed out.
However, you should see the notebook display if you will boot the notebook in the ?safe mode?. Please check it!

This is a real tricky one, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically the problem is:

We have a laptop, which like many laptops has an external display connector (standard 15 pin D-SUB VGA) but also like many laptops looks for an external monitor & if it can't find one (presume via the sense lines) disables the external output.

3 Modern flat panel displays I have tried work fine but 3 older CRT's do not (they come up initially when the computer boots then at a point it the startup when it does the check the external signal shuts off). I have to get it working with one of the CRT's.

Yes, I can force it to output with keys function/F12 but it has to be an unattended feature during power cycling.

In the cable can I short a combination os sense pins to mimic the newer screens so that the external VGA output is always on.

I have tried shorting pin 11 (Sense ID 0) to ground and pins 4/11/12 (sense ID 0,1 and 2) simultaneously to ground but still the laptop does not detect the monitor.

This should be really simple but it isn't I have spent hours and hours researching on the Net to no avail.

Hope someone can help.

Regards
Lee Gibson

Hello, I have a ThinkPad R61, which I use with an external monitor.  Somehow, I have had it in place for months with the display on the laptop off and the monitor on.  I used it today at a meeting to power a projector, somehow selected an Fn F7 scheme of presentation such that both the screen and projector were on - as I desired - then came home, re-installed it with my external monitor and cannot find out how to turn off the display on the laptop.  The selections under Fn F7 don't allow that combination.  I tried the trick you offered, Fn F3 to turn off the display, but it turned off both displays.  (Now, how can I reverse that setting?) This seems like an everyday switching requirement, but I cannot find a clue in the ThinkVantage Help, the mini manual, on the website, etc.  Thanks

Solved!

Go to Solution.

Answer:Turn display off when using external monitor R61?

Hi WaynO, After pressing Fn-F7, click on Manage Schemes... to open the Presentation Director window. Then click the New... button. You should be able to set up a scheme to display only on your external monitor. After setting it up, be sure to check the box in the Fn+F7 Menu column so that your new scheme shows up in the menu when you press Fn-F7.

Answer:No Video either on display or external monitor

Don't do it. A reflow is a very crude fix that will not last even if it seems to work temporarily, It involves blowing heat directly onto the video chip to melt the solder and reestablish lost connections. Real tech shops do a "reball" which properly applies the video chip back to the motherboard. We don't really hear about "reflows" any more. That was about a specific model series almost 10 years ago and I am not aware of your model having similar issues. If the video is dead, then your best bet is a new motherboard. You can also find shops that have a presence on eBay that have professional equipment needed to rework a motherboard at the chip level and their services are about $60-100 to rebuild your motherboard.

Hello all! I have a Problem with my W500-Notebook with the FireGL V5700 and Windows 7 as operating system .I use the Notebook-display and an extarnal monitor together for work. Now i can set the resolution on the notebook-display to the resolutions 1920x 1200 and 1680x1050 which is perfect.I want the resolution on my external LCD-Monitor also to be a 1680x1050 for its a wide screen and that is the optimal resolution for it.But I can only set the resolution on either 1600x1200 what makes the picture look horrible. or 1920x1080 what is to high for my monitor. Is this a problem with the display-driver or is the graphic-card not able to drive an external monitor with this resolution?????

Answer:Display-resolution on external Monitor

Does Win 7 recognize and identify the external monitor correctly? Possibly Win 7 sees it as a generic PnP and is limiting the resolution to what it thinks is  the max. Try installing drivers for that monitor so Win 7 knows it's capabilities.

Hello,I am running Windows 7 on a ThinkPad T500 (type 2082.BSG), and I am encountering problems after recently updating my display software from the Lenovo site (reading the list of installed software, I think the software installation that is causing the problem is "ThinkPad Video Features[AMD Switchable Graphics(M8x)] for Windows 7 [32/64bit], version 8.752.4-101022a-107489C-Lenovo). Before the update my computer correctly guessed which display was active (laptop screen or external monitor), and used the active display. For example, when the laptop was docked and the cover closed it used the external monitor. After the update when the laptop is docked and the cover is closed, I cannot get it to display on the external monitor. I must open the cover and use Fn+F7 to obtain the display on the external monitor. Can someone please tell me which settings I must use to obtain the old behavior.Regards, bostjanv

Answer:can't get T500 to display on external monitor

The previous is an old post, but since there was no reply, and I recently solved the problem, I am writing in case someone else runs into the same problem. After encountering the problem I reverted to the factory default driver (which did not exhibit the problem). However, lately I received another message from Lenovo to the effect that it is recommended to install "Thinkpad Video Features(AMD Switchable Graphics...)...". I installed the software, but the problem described in my original post reappeared. However, this time the (AMD) software had an option "driver update", and my video hardware was correctly recognized, and the correct driver was downloaded from the AMD site, after which the problem described in my original post disappeared.Regards, bostjanv

Hello Sevenforums,

I run Windows 7 64 Bit on my HP laptop and essentially have 2 "modes." The first is just straight laptop use with nothing plugged in, and the other is a "docked mode," where I plug a monitor, external keyboard and mouse, and speakers into the laptop and use it essentially as a desktop. To save processing power, I display ONLY on the external monitor.

So my issue is that every time I plug in the monitor, I get a duplicated display (same thing displayed on both the laptop screen and the monitor). Is there a way for Windows to change my display settings when it detects a monitor has been plugged in? This isn't a huge problem, and only takes about 15 seconds to fix, but if there is a solution I sure would like to know.

Thanks in advance,
Lanebobane

Answer:External Monitor Display Question

Hello Lanebobane, welcome to SF!

When you connect a second screen you have the option of "cloning" your primary screen to it or "extending your desktop". Or, sometimes, neither. It seems you've set it to clone. Since you did not post any lt details it is difficult to give examples...i wonder what it is that you do to fix it now, as i would expect that to be the sam screen where you can set this right...

Also, dending on mobo, on board graphics, if your system is new enough to run W7, I would be very surprised if running lt screen AND external, caused a noticeable processing power diff?

Hi

I have a display problem with my laptop, which is:

When I connect my computer to an external display (projector - data show - using rgb cable or s-video), the contents of my computer are not displayed.
I used F5, Catalyst Control Center, but without success.
When I connect it with a TV using s-video, I get the message "no signal".
I think that the devices know the existance of each other, but the contents are not sent to the external display.

I don't know what is the problem. I need to use my computer and display using projector for my presentations which is very frequent.
The problem is that it used to work then suddenly it stopped displaying on external displays.
I couldn't figure out the problem then I thought that the settings may have been changed accidently.
So I formatted my computer to return it to the factory configuration, but my try failed and it still doesn't display on the external display.

My computer specifications:
- Toshiba Satellite A200-1BJ
- CPU: Intel Core2 Duo
- OS: Windows Vista Home Premium
- Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600

Does anyone know the solution??

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Satellite A200-1BJ - No display on external monitor

In your case I would update the display driver and the BIOS. Both you can find on the Toshiba website:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers

Have you tested different cables? Maybe it?s faulty or too long.

Make also sure that you use a supported display resolution and refresh rate for the external display. You can change this in Catalyst Control Center.

I am experiencing issues with external monitor displays on W530 connected through ultra dock.  Am running a total of 3 monitors (W530 display plus two monitors).  Whenever there is any sort of time out or sleep mode, the external monitors come back too bright and too yellow.  I can quickly fix by just toggling back and forth between "Use NVIDIA Settings" or "Other Applications Control Color Settings" on the NVIDIA Control Panel but the changes don't stick and the problem recurs.   Other quirks which may be related are that expanding windows to full screen will sometimes spread across the entire 3-monitors vs just the monitor the window is set up in.  Shrinking and trying again usually fixes this item.  Also, when undocked sometimes W30 display comes up with very low brightness.  Again, problem fixies by closing cover and retrying. Have tried INTEL power savings settings suggested on similar posting.  No change. Anyone else encountered these issues?

Answer:W530 External Monitor Display Issues

Hi Paul930,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are issue with external monitor on your ThinkPad W530.

I suggest you to uninstall the current graphic drivers of both Nvidia & Intel, download latest version from the support site and install it.

Hope this helps.

I have a laptop as my main computer and I have it hooked up to an external keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Sometimes I like to unplug everything and just use it like a normal laptop. When I use the Fn+F5 key to change to the internal display, the resolution is still the same from the other display. It is still readable but there is a black space where the screen could expand to. I tried to (while hooked up to the external display) change the resolution of the secondary monitor (the internal one) but it keeps just copying exactly what is on the first display (the external one). If I change the resolution on one monitor, they both change to that. If i click "Identify" it shows a number "1" on both monitors. I could just change the resolution every time i switch monitors but then when i plug it into the external one it is a little distorted (enough that i could navigate to change the resolution back though)

Or is there a batch or vbs script that could toggle the resolution between the two?
The two resolutions are: External: 1024 x 768 Internal: 1280 x 800

One day I was using the laptop surfing the net normally, everything was fine and suddenly the display gone wrong...(pic below). I tried using an external monitor and still the same, so I am quite sure that my monitor is fine and it's probably a display card problem?
I tried to update my display card driver and no luck, so I decided to use the recovery CD to restore the system, and no luck again.

Here is a screenshot after the system restore...is there a way to repair this without taking it to a service centre??
thanks

Answer:Tecra S1 - Display issue, even on external monitor

Hi borist,

It?s really great that you could post a picture of your problem. Thank you!
Furthermore you tried already a lot of like recovery installation and an external monitor.

Unfortunately it seems to be a hardware malfunction of graphic card. :(

So that means you have to exchange the mainboard because the graphic card is fixed on it. Mainboard is pretty expensive part and Tecra S1 is old notebook so maybe you can get a second hand mainboard or notebook on eBay and exchange it yourself.

Good luck! :)

Well, running w7 ultimate on a Dell xps m1330 laptop. Everything looks good, but at work I am connected to a matrox triple-head-to-go device which is connected to (3) 22' monitors (3840x1280 resolution). Now when I connected it, ran the nvidia app, it found it and worked great.

Problem is I get home, no external connected, so running off the laptop with the basic resolution, I am trying to start apps (firefox, stickies, etc.) and I guess they were in other spots at work as I don't see them. I forced a close on FF, then re-started, rt clicking and maximizing which worked, but then other apps like stickies don't have that option. An alt-tab shows it running in the lower right (see screenshot), but there is absolutely no way of getting to the app! I did close the app completely and restarted, but it does restart in a location not on the screen.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

W520 laptop display stopped working - acting like the backlight has died. I replaced the display and the connecting cable. No change. Replaced the motherboard, the display still won't work. I can hook up a 50" TV using the display port cable and see the desktop and use the computer, but the integrated display refuses to work. I'm stumped. Any similar experiences or ideas to explore or check out? Thanks.Scott

Answer:LCD display doesn't work, external monitor does

The most common cause for no backlight is a blown backlight fuse on the motherboard. The fuse is VERY fast burning and easy to blow. It is important to wear a grounding wrist strap when doing repairs that involve the screen or LCD cables.

I have the following configuration:     - T530     - Windows 10 (64 bit)     - Display Adapter: NVIDIA NVS 5400M     - Docking Station: Mini doc 3 (4338)     - External monitor using DVI interface     - Everything is updated I cannot get my laptop to display to an external monitor consistently. If I direct the display to use the external monitor, either by extending the display or by setting the laptop to only use the 2nd monitor, one of 3 things will happen.     1) Uses the external monitor just fine (about 10% of the time)     2) No signal to the external monitor (about 20% of the time)     3) Display shows on the external monitor for 2 seconds and then it goes black (about 70% of the time) This occurs regardless of using the mini-doc or when plugging the monitor into the VGA plug on the laptop directly. I did not have this problem in Windows 7 or after upgrading to Windows 10. It started happening about 4 weeks ago, which may correspond with a BIOS upgrade, but I cannot remember the exact timing of my last BIOS upgrade. I tried switching the Display setting in the BIOS to "Integrated Graphics" and use OS Detect, based on another post, but I have the same behavior as described above. Any suggestions for a permanent fix?

I started using my lenovo with a second screen, but then after a few days the main screen in my laptop stopped working, and I can only use it connected to the secondary monitor. If I set windows to "extend" the displays, and I close and open the laptop, for about 1 second I can see some image, but the resolution is wrong, the colors are a strange shade of blue, and there are horizontal lines across the screen. Then, it goes black again. I assumed this was a GPU problem, maybe overheating? But then I thought well, the secondary monitor works, so it might be just a display problem. Any ideas on how to solve this? I got this laptop second-hand so I don't have any waranty, I'd like to rule out any software problem before I buy any new pieces or even a new laptop.  thank you!

is it possible to use external monitor on Satellite L40 together with built-in display with different output? For example you would have larger desktop, etc.
Simply does the laptop have two graphic adapters?

You can use external monitor or TV with your notebook. You can have cloned desktop or extended desktop but I don?t understand what do you mean with ?different output?.
In user?s manuals document is explained how to use it.

Do you have this document? You can download it from Toshiba download page.

You might be using the HDMI as the source of your connection.

I routinely use a second monitor but these last few weeks either the laptop doesn't recognize the 2nd monitor or else it does breifly and then the monitor blanks and goes into low power/power saving mode.  Same issue with two different monitors.  There is no problem with the laptop's built-in display. After researching, I suspect it is a by-product of the recent Windows 10 update.  Mixed advice on solutions.  I tried updating all my drivers from Windows Device Manager.Several posts recommended going to manufacturer (intel) and downloading drivers. Its automatic utility did not detect a current driver, but under older versions there was one from about a year ago. (I didn't try to install.)I've changed power settings so have monitor "always on". No difference. What else can I try? This is really frustrating.

Looking for some direction.  Wife has a T510 with the Optimus technology that's about 15 months old.  Just yesterday the colors on the laptop screen are off.  Brown looks rust, dark grey off white, gray almost white, etc. A second display is attached via a dock and that appears to be fine.  She powered off and on again and thinks it looks better (I didn't see it).  I'm going to get my hands on it later and see if I force it to integrated, then to discrete via the BIOS if it makes any difference.  If it doesn't could there be an issue with the panel itself that causes this problem?  I can try to post pictures of a pallet later on if necessary when I post the results of the discrete vs integrated test.

Answer:Color off on T510 display but not external monitor

Maybe some program screwed up the gamma ramps.I know a few of my older games would directly mess with the colors and wouldn't restore them properly if they exited funny.

Try running the Windows Calibrator too. It might reset some incorrect values.

Hello, how is everyone doing & Merry Christmas!

First off I'm an avid PC gamer. What I want to ultimately do is record how I play & then upload it to YOUTUBE. I've tried it with software (fraps, etc...) but it either lags at high resolutions, or I have to bring it down to the lowest resolution & it sucks to play that way.

I'd like to know my options as to some type of external hardware that will record whatever I'm doing on my pc monitor without interfering with how I play while I'm recording. Also, after I'm done recording I have to be able to xfer the recording back to the pc for editing, uploading, etc... I was thinking there might be some type of camcord, or external hard drive? I was even thinking of having it hooked up to my TV, and recording it to DVD.

My PC is gateway gt5628
My graphics card is Nvidia GEforce GTS 250
My Monitor is HP wide 17 inch lcd
I have 6 usbs and 2 firewire 1394 ports

Guys, any help & suggestions would be great!

I'll be checking this post periodically, Tx!

Answer:Is there external hardware to record monitor display???

What I'd try is an S-video cable from your video card, set the nvidia driver to clone your desktop display through the TV output then connect it to a scart and a DVD or video recorder.

If you have a laptop handy you can buy one of these

I have one for converting analogue to digital video and they work pretty good, just connect it to the S-video output on your vid card, then plug the USB plug into a laptop and start recording using the supplied software.
Fraps tip=What your probably experiencing is hard drive lag,the game has to be read from your hard drive whilst fraps writes a video to it,if you have a spare hard drive layin around or have two HD's use that just for recording your videos, put the game on one HD and change the fraps default directory to the other.

A few suggestions for you to try, good luck

And merry Christmas to you!

this IdeaPad 510-15isk of mine the built-in screen is defective so i attached a VGA monitor to the VGA port. i learned somewhere that when a laptop senses, on bootup, that there is an external monitor connected it should send its display to the external device. my laptop doesn't do that and instead it uses the built-in display which i cannot see because it's defective. i also try to get into the CMOS settings using that Novo button but it since it shows the display using the built-in LCD screen i am unable to check nor configure the CMOS to direct all output to external display (which i'm assuming is controlled by the CMOS). since finding how to goto the CMOS settings on this laptop (that Novo button is too small is not well labelled) i thought there might be some hidden feature that would allow me to force the display to go to the external device. btw, the F10 hotkey that is supposed to toggle the display output doesn't do anything. appreciate any help.

Okay guys i have a puzzling one for you... I'm running my trusty Emachines E527 with Windows 8 RP. I was playing Minecraft on an external monitor (a TV) and I get a blue screen... no biggie I've dealt with these before. I do a hard reset and turn my computer back on and I don't get an image on my laptop screen. I take a flashlight to my screen ( I've had back light issues before thought it might happen again) and nothing... no image or anything. I decided to take it apart and use a voltage tester on the inverter to see if it's even sending power to it and I don't get a reading anywhere. Furthermore no external monitor hookup will display an image either

This must be a software error... though I don't get a boot splash either..

This one is beyond me.. someone on another forum suggested clearing the cmos. I only have a battery in there on my motherboard but it is soldered to the board itself... kinda hard to clear...

I leave on vacation tonight and I need my laptop so any help would be greatly appreciated....

My daughter dropped her Toshiba laptop and for sure the display is broken.

However, I attached an external monitor, but am having a problem. I can get the external monitor to work if I boot the system in Windows Safe Mode (running Vista Premium Home Edition) but cannot get anything to display on the external monitor if I allow the laptop to boot in Windows Normal Mode.

I've tried the "F5" function numerous times to no avail.

Any ideas?

Answer:Broken Laptop Display - Using External Monitor

The video drivers and display settings are configured for the LCD (which is broken). So when Windows tries to send a picture to the monitor, it is being sent but it has properties that the monitor cannot display. When you try to boot in normal mode, do you get a picture on the external monitor to a certain point and then it goes out? Do you get the Windows logo and the scrolling bar, but after a bit it goes black? If so, then what I described is what the problem is. When Windows loads the video driver, you lose the picture. How to fix it? Boot in safe mode and uninstall the driver from the device manager. Then reboot in normal mode and Vista should re-install it using default settings for the monitor you have hooked up to it. Be sure you have a current driver on a CD before you remove it just in case Vista doesn't automatically install it when you reboot in normal mode. Some laptops also have a setting in BIOS that determines the main/default display. The settings might look something like this: "LCD>CRT" is one setting with "CRT>LCD" being it's other option; or it might look like "CRT/LCD" or it might say something like "Init display :" followed by LCD or CRT.... be sure you set it to CRT if you have an option.

On other laptops I've used, I've been able to see my laptop screen while simultaneously projecting to an overhead or external monitor. I can use F5 to toggle between screen, external, or simultaneous. This works great for presentations. With my A70, however, I can only toggle for screen or external/projector, not both simultaneously.

Any help on solving will be appreciated.

Hi
I am using Vista for business (32-bit) on a new Dell Latitude E4300 laptop. I want to use a new external monitor (Dell S2209W) with it.

The external monitor is connected and works, but I cannot get it to display at its proper top resolution of 1920 x 1080.

When I check the displays in the laptop's device manager, both the laptop and the external monitor are given as Generic pnp. Attempts to update the drivers meet with the response that they are up-to-date.When I try to change the display from the desktop, the resolution options do not go high enough for the external monitor.

The laptop display works fine; what I need is for the external monitor to work at the high resolution.
Any ideas gratefully received. Thanks

I have a Dell notebook with XP Media Direct. The display goes black soon after boot-up while an external monitor functions. When the notebook lid closed and re-opened, the display comes back temporarily, the external seems to reset, and then the notebook display returns to black. I have hibernate turned off, standby set to never and sleep set to never.

I tested standby and hibernate and they both display that they are either about to switch to standby or hibernate before the display turns off.

I don't think it is a heat issue because it happens even after the notebook has been off for awhile and turned back on. I've updated the video drivers.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Notebook display goes black, but external monitor is functional??

i believe this is a feature, not a problem.

Most laptops will shut off their screen when an external monitor is connected to save power. However, depending on your laptop, there should be a Fn command allowing you to swap display modes (only ext, only laptop, or both)

I bought an Inspiron 15 3542 a few months ago. I connected it an external Acer 27' monitor via hdmi cable. It didn't  work. However, I could connect the same monitor to my older Acer Laptop via same hdmi cable without any problem.

I installed the latest video driver from dell.com, setup with 60p HZ, and the monitor only worked fine for a few seconds then went black (same as before). However, when I changed the display setting to 60i HZ, the monitor worked but the display was a little shaky/blinking.  Please help.

Answer:Inspiron 15 3542 can not display correctly on external monitor.

Hi,
You may want to take a look at this article on setting up and troubleshooting multiple monitors in Dell laptops.  While it doesn't sound like you're using the FN+F8 key to set up multiple monitors the basic concepts of how to adjust display settings, how to tell the system to display onto external monitors, etc., are the same.
Let me know if this helps or not.   It could simply be that the resolution and refresh rates of your monitor are outside the range of what the laptop is currently set up to handle.   Have you tried the on-screen setup utility that comes with most monitors?  Try resetting the monitor to default (factory) settings and see if that helps.

Hi, My ThinkPad R61 was a perfect companion until it started throwing some problems recently.Below is the description of the problem: It started with "Fan Error" message on boot-up. After googling I found this is known problem with thinkpads and i could bypass it by pressing the ESC key. More over this was not persistent. I feared the fan error could do more damage and looks so. Now my Display(LCD) shows only a Grey-white screen. I cannot see the boot-up screen(think vantage screen), but if I connect my thinkpad to a External monitor i can see the display on the external monitor well. Few things I tried are:Toggled with fn+F7 keys during boot-upre-installed OS Nothing above worked for me. Currently its off warranty. Before I give it to thinkpad service center I wanted to know if anyone could help me with any suggestions or advices.  - Hafsal

what is the full model number of your R61? xxxx-xxx?So there is no screen artifact on external LCD? fan error could be triggered by a dirty fan, a faulty motherboard or a fan that internal electric fault. What GPU do you have?

I want to share with you this week's adventure with my new (external) 20-inch monitor with a maximum resolution of 1600:900. When try to install it, I learned that 1600:900 does not appear in the slider options in Control Panel-->Display-->Settings. Why not? During a week of trouble-shooting, I learned that this new monitor has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and is not compatible with my SL400's screen with an aspect ratio of 16:10. The maximum resolution I can use for both the laptop and external monitor is 1280:800--and cannot use the stated maximum resolution of 1600:900. Display Properties usually offer a number of resolutions based on your monitor and video card.  To pick one that does not distort, the first number divided by 16 should equal the second number divided by 10.  I have not used one of these, but I?m pretty sure you can choose a Portrait setup physically and in Display Properties.  (Of course, then you?d want to switch the 16 and 10 above.)  I believe that the current 20-inch monitors are 16:9, so this problem should be widespread. So it wouldn't matter which 20-inch monitor I would have bought. In Lenovo's online forum, a lot of people were discussing this problem and the consensus was that is was caused by a driver or BIOS problem. So I installed a new monitor driver and the newest BIOS. But the problem persisted.  And finally someone at Lenovo figured out the aspect ratio issue. So if I want to use a 20-inch monitor... My system is a W530, running Windows 7 Enterprise, Service Pack 1.  On 26-Mar-2015, System Update informed me that there was a critical update.  It installed:  ThinkPad Hotkey Features Integration Package Setup, version 5.51.0100.3000  WER patch for System Update Patch, version 1.2  Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver for Windows 64bit, version 11.2.0.1006  ThinkPad Video Features (NVIDIA NVS 5200M/5400M, Quadro K1000M/K2000M Optimus) - 7 [64], version 9.18.13.4520. Before that update, I could use an external monitor connected to the back of the docking station (DVI port) or an external monitor connected to the VGA port on the side of my laptop.  After that update, neither works.   If I disconnect/reconnect the monitor on either port, the system does not make any noise.  If I attempt to detect an external monitor using Right-Click->Screen Resolution, and press the Detect button, nothing is found.  If I attempt to use an external monitor using Fn+F7, it wont display.  If I try a different monitor, it does not work either.   Questions:1.  Is there a known issue with this driver software?2.  Is there some way I can find out what version of the driver software was running BEFORE this update?  Or do I just randomly select some older version and hope?

Answer:External monitor display stopped working after update

Seems like it's be the graphics driver that caused this.Go to Device Manager, Video Adapters, NVIDIA Quadro Kx000. Right-click, Properties, Driver tab, Roll back driver.

Gentlepeople,

Good Day !!!

Is it possible to connect a external monitor with Tecra S5-12L and use both display at the same time.

My Laptop details: http://www.toshiba.nl/innovation/jsp...U&ERROR=0#tab7;

OS: Win7 32 bit

I had installed value added package from toshiba but still i cannot able to connect and use laptop display and the 2nd monitor at the same time. i.e my PC is not detecting the 2 monitors at the same time.

If i connect the external monitor and restart the PC then my PC takes the external monitor as a main display and the laptop screen is not detected any more.

If i disconnect the external monitor and restart the PC then the PC monitor acts as a primary monitor and after the booting up in connecting the external monitor the PC is not detecting any more.

Before i used to use to connect it with TV and i can get the TV and the PC monitor to work at the same time but at the time i was using Windows XP. Now connecting to TV, I cannot able to get the TV and the laptop screen working at the same time.

Is it true that we cannot able to use the PC monitor and an external monitor at the same time ? or is there any settings that i should perform to get the dual monitors working ? Please share your view if its know.. thanks...

There is no problem in the cable nor the monitor as i tested it with other PC(ASUS, Win 7 64 bit) and its working fine.

Is there any limitation in hardware or its just software issue/settings.
Please support !!!

Dell Inspiron M731R
When turning on the laptop it has white screen at boot-up. I hooked up an external monitor(hdmi) and when it reaches the window 8.1 splash screen then the external monitor kicks in and everything works fine(laptop lcd is still white with vert and horizontal lines (I can kind of see whats displayed). But when I tried in safe mode the external monitor doesn't display anything. I can barely make out what is displaying on the laptop but when I try to project on to the external monitor I get a message 'your PC can’t project to a second screen. Try reinstalling the driver or using a different video card.
Could it be an inverter for the white screen and driver for not projecting in safe mode? Reinstall the display adapter?
Thx

Answer:T440s blurred display after connecting external monitor ?

Hi Draguzet,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

As per the query we understood that you are facing the issue with blurred display on your ThinkPad T440s.

If you just upgraded to 8.1 and now your fonts look weird, text is harder to read, or tray icons look fuzzy/blurry then this should fix it:

Right click desktop, choose "Screen resolution"
Click "Make text and other items larger or smaller"
Check the box "Let me choose one scaling level for all of my displays"
Click the "Apply" button below the above setting.

Hope this helps!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

Upuntil a few days ago I could connect an external monitor (Dell1905FP) via VGA cable to my Thinkpad Edge 15" (0301CTO) and everything worked fine. The Thinkpad is running Win 7 (64 bit). Now when I connect the Dell monitor my Thinkpad display immediately goes blank. When I remove the cable it comes back on again. When these two are connected the Dell monitor is unable to detect the Thinkpad display. I am of course unable to check if the Thinkpad can detect the Dell monitor. Both the Dell monitor and the Thinkpad display work when not connected. I have tried connecting the Thinkpad to an alternative external monitor (Viewsonic VG2428WM) using a (different ) VGA cable and it works fine. I have tried using the "working" VGA cable between the Thinkpad and Dell Monitor but this makes no difference. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?ThanksAngie

Answer:Can the external monitor's resolution be set different from the Z400 Touch's own display?

HiThis depends on what way you are connecting the laptop. It also depends also on the gpu type. On vga, you will get the same resolution though on hdmi, 1920X1080 is supported. On hdmi also a discrete nvidia or amd gpu would give the resolution most probably but i am not sure intel.gpu.

This monitor is called Samsung Syncmaster t240hd. Its an hdtv monitor with 1920 x1200 resolution for monitor. I believe if used as a TV, its 1920 x 1080 though but i wont use it for tv. Anyways, the first thing i noticed was the monitor isn't straight. If you look at it from the side, it looks like its slouching. Is there a way to fix this? Thus adjust it a bit higher?
The other thing is when i look at numbers/words, its a lot harder to read than my old monitor? Thus you see its much easier to read the same thing on my laptop screen compared to this monitor. My laptop is dell xps 15 9550 and very nice. But its just harder to read on this hdtv. I tried making brightness higher than 45 and this makes it much worst. The lower it is, a bit better but its just harder to read on it. Basically its looks very yellowish? For example when i go to a site on another forum, where most of it is white... if i open the same page on this monitor, its yellow. Its a really ugly color and just hard to look at the screen.
Can someone tell me how i can fix this issue? Also i wasn't aware of this but this hdtv monitor has glass over the monitor. Is this how all hdtv monitors are? Is that the reason why its harder to read on this as oppose to a regular monitor?
Are there settings i can change that i can make reading words and letters much easier?
These are the settings when i click on the menu button

Hello everyone,

last week I got a new Tecra S2 notebook and I have the problem to set my external monitor as primary display in the dual view mode. The topic in the window is greyed out.

Does anybody know how i can activate this function?

On my old notebook (Tecra S1 with ATI graphic adapter) there was no problem to switch the primary output from the internal to the external display.

sincerly,
Martin

Answer:Tecra S2: Setting external monitor as primary display

Hi Martin

As far as I know it is not possible to set external monitor as primary one. The notebook LCD display is always set as primary one. I use Tecra M1 (similar to S1) and this option is also grayed out.

In my office I use it with docking station and external monitor. When Windows starts the first will be shown at external display but the log in window is always shown at notebook LCD.

Sorry but it is like it is. Was Toshiba designed display driver installed on your older Tecra S1?

Hi Guys,
I bought a Lenovo P50 which I'm very fine with. It has a built in 4k-Display. It is running with full resolution and 250% DPI. Yesterday I connected my 24" Eizo (Full HD) to my Laptop, both are working with their native resolution.
And here comes the problem. The external display shows everything way to big. Just like I'm using it with a loupe.
The internal 4k (primary) has the DPI setting of 250% and Windows 10 shows me, that the second one (the Eizo) is working with 100% DPI. But in my Opinion this can't be true. I think it takes the 250% from the 4k-display an set it to the base of 100% for the external one, if you understand what I mean.
But I googeled a lot and it seems that there is until now no solution, because Microsoft handles that different to Apple? (Where it works fine). And I don't want to set the 4k-Display to a lower resolution (I know that would fix the problem).
I think that I don't demand something impossible? Or did I something wrong?

Dear All, I am using an X201 in conjunction with an external TFT display in an extended desktop configuration. The X201 display is used as the primary. My OS is Windows 7 enterprise. There is a problem which has been bugging me and I have been unable to find a solution. The problem is that when running in this dual monitor configuration, the desktop icons move around if I place the mouse pointer near the edges of either display. The move off the screen in some instances such that only a few of them are still visible. This does not happen when using only the X201 panel without an external display connected. I'm aware this is more of a Windows 7 issue but was wondering whether anyone else with this configuration has noticed this rather odd and irritating behaviour.

I have a X220t that has worked pretty well for the last 4 years, but a few months after the warranty expired, it started developing a curious issue. Basically, whenever I extend my desktop to an external display, the _internal_ display becomes filled with random, moving noise. It seems to be mostly present in the green channel only. Here is an example photo: http://postimg.org/image/56vo2jolt/ Using Windows+P in order to go back to either clone or single monitor mode entirely removes all noise. Also, it seems that using DisplayPort instead of VGA or DVI, as well an higher CPU temperature, increase the "quantity" of the noise. Has anyone ever heard of this? I'm presuming it's a technical fault all right, but since it works perfectly in single monitor mode, I ponder if there may be some kind of workaround for it. Like playing with the pixel clocks.

Answer:X220T - Internal display noise only when using external monitor

I had exactly that problem on my X220t, but luckily about a month before the warranty ran out. It wasn't unusable, but the longer the display was left 'dualled' the worse it got. Switching to single display then back to dual fixed it, but only for a few minutes, and it was also clearly deteriorating over time - the noise started earlier and got worse more quickly as time went on. Mine was better on DisplayPort than on VGA, but noisy on either. No amount of driver updating/re-installation fixed it, and it was the same at any combination of resolutions on internal or external monitor. The answer in my case was to return it to Lenovo, who diagnosed a motherboard failure and replaced the motherboard under warranty.
