error 80072efd is preventing me fom downloading updates

Question: error 80072efd is preventing me fom downloading updates

I was going to download Norton 2009 antivirus, but the setup said that the computer needed and upgrade. I proceeded to the windows update to check. Sure enough I needed windows service pack 2. I tried to download this but got the error 80072efd. Its not the firewall, but i also realized that I cannot download it directly from the windows update website. I am really confused and need this antivirus cause my computer is infected at this time. All help will be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: error 80072efd is preventing me fom downloading updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello guys,
Today i started to experience a bizzare problem. Suddenly i could not connect to Origin, Steam, Guild Wars 2, and some programs like that. I also cant do the microsoft updates, it gives error 80072efd. I cannot surf the internet with Internet Explorer while i can do it with chrome and mozilla. Plus i can use Skyp. Tried a couple of fixes but cannot seem to get rid of this problem. I also tried installing microsoft fix it but it cannot be installed because it cannot find an internet connection. But clearly i have an internet connection and can reach internet with chrome and mozilla. If you guys want me to post any scans or some test just tell me because i dont know what should i post about this problem. Any help will be appreciated much thanks in advance.

Hello -

I seem to be having a snowball effect of errors with my computer. It all started when I realized I couldn't find/install new Windows Updates. I hate to say it, but I went a year without installing new updates. I would always get the error code 80072efd. I tried following Microsoft's help and was able to download and install like 70 updates a few days ago. Since then, I have been unable to use Windows Updates again and am still receiving the same error. I don't want to post too many problems in this one post so I figured we'd just start with this one. Since it seems to be the start of all my computer problems anyway hopefully if I can fix this the other errors with get fixed as well.

BTW, I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, SP 1.

Thanks in advance!

I would check out this support documentation from Windows. From the sounds of it, the Windows servers are too busy, or an AV, or firewall program is preventing you from connecting. What AV or firewalls do you have installed, if any?http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...-error-80072efdIf you have already tried these solutions, we could use some more info. What service pack is already installed? What type of computer, etc.. When did you start having this problem? Can you connect to the Windows website? Can you connect to other websites? There is a problem upgrading to service pack 2 from Vista SP1 that I am aware of, but we need more info. The more information you can provide the better. With regards,bwest0703

I just completely reformatted my computer after a suspected malware attack.
The first thing I tried after reformatting and doing a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit edition was to run windows update. I received the error code 80072EFD. This is before I installed any software, firewalls, or antivirus programs. I also get this same error when trying to activate windows or office, or when trying to set up Microsoft media center.

I do have internet connection. Both firefox and internet explorer work perfectly fine.

I have been in contact with microsoft, but nothing has worked so far. I thought I would see if anyone here had any ideas.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have already done. Please read through these before posting as you can see I have already tried a lot of things!
1. Waiting 15 minutes and trying again
2. Restarting the computer
3. Adding windows update websites to the internet explorer exceptions list: http://*.update.microsoft.com https://*.update.microsoft.com http://download.windowsupdate.com Microsoft Support http://update.microsoft.com https://update.microsoft.com
4. Verifying internet connectivity (internet works fine)
5. Tried it with Windows firewall on and off. No other firewalls are installed.
6. I tried this before any anti-virus was installed. I have since installed AVG free and tried again both with it running and disabled
7. No software accelerator programs are installed

The past two MS updates including the one today(MS06-001 - Vulnerability in Graphics Rendering Engine Could Allow Remote Code Execution (912919)), resulting in a stop error blue screen 000007b upon rebooting. I was able to fix both by rebooting from the Win2K disk and going to the manual repair and then run chkdsk. After chkdsk ran and replace some security files, I exited and rebooted and things were fine -each time.
What could be happening with these updates?
Thanks much.

When I download and install the Windows XP Updates, I receive this message:

"Error creating process <C:\DOCUMENT~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\IXP000.TMP\dahotfix.exe /q/n> Reason: The system cannot find the path specified."

I have no idea why it started doing this (for about a week now). The update still gets installed alright. I have read that hotfix is some type of utility for Windows NT. I performed a search of my hard drives and found one instance: c:\windows\dahotfix.log

Has anyone else ever seen this and if so, recommend the best way to solve it.

Thanks ahead for any assistance.

Ok, someone please help me with this... I can't get any windows updates at all... My automatic updates will start and say downloading updates 0% and then it will stop. So, I went to the microsoft update page and I got Error number: 0x80072EE7.I went to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941 and nothing helped. I did a google search and saw that somebody had a file here called Fixwareout, so I downloaded and it didn't work either.I don't know what the freak to do.I have Windows XP Home edition service pack 3

Answer:Windows Updates Aren't Downloading, Getting Error Messages

I presume this a bug in XP SP3 as it is still in beta stage. You should uninstall that and wait till it is a stable version before you use it on a important personal PC. Don't forget to submit a bug report for SP3 - that'll get you invited for more testing (and you may get some personalized support with fixing it on your system).I wonder... If you uninstall SP3 do you keep all your updates?

I bought Lumia 650 last week at store in India. And, have been having the same issue since Day 1. I get an error 0x80072F78 when I try to update any of the MS Published apps through windows store that shows up as update available. Am on OS Build: 10.0.10586.218. Anybody else facing the same issue? Have been following up with Microsoft Support for the last 5 days but, they are hardly able to respond on this. Have tried following options already:
1. Changing the Date and Time setting from Automatic to Manual, soft reset and verified. This did not work.
2. As suggested by Microsoft, did Hard Reset through Settings. This did not work
3. Ensured that the Account is in sync. This did not work.
Further, as I said above, this is only on the apps and settings which show Microsoft as the publisher. Am able to comfortably download third party apps though. Any suggestions please?

Question: MSN Error 80072efd

I have problems entering the hotmail website and logging on MSN. In my other computer, I'm able to log on MSN, but the hotmail website won't show up. For the messenger, I already tried deleting MSN 7 and installing MSN 7.5, but it still won't work! My sister has a roommate who is making life kind of difficult - he's downloading stuff and installing it without permission, despite being asked not to. They're on one desktop and she wants to know if there's a way to make it so you can only download things if you've got the password on one desktop, or if she has to make separate desktops (because I told her I'm pretty sure you can download but can't install on XP desktops that are limited accounts - that's true, isn't it?). She's using the latest version of IE, and she uses a laptop (not sure if XP is different on laptops or not - during the short time I had a chance to try it out it seemed the same, but I wasn't particularly looking.)

Answer:preventing users from downloading things

Limited users aren't supposed to be able to download, but there are ways around it unfortunately. The first thing you should do is make sure any Administrative level accounts have passwords that only she knows, and that includes the System Administrator account which may be hidden on her machine but reachable by booting into Safe Mode (tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up).

These also might help:

You can also block CD/DVD and floppy installs: See line 264 (right hand

I'm beginning to despair!Having been using AVG 6 for ages, with no problems, I upgraded to version 7 only for numerous problems to occur. I got fed up trying to correct it and tried Avast instead. Initially this was excellent, and so easy to set up and use(it does most of it for you). However, recently some strange things have been happening. I use Mailwasher with multiple email accounts, but only have two accounts set to be checked by default. I also use Outlook Express 6.0 to read the mail.If I check mail with Mailwasher and leave it on the server, when I download it with Outlook Express I don't get all the mail seen in Mailwasher. I have Outlook Express set to leave mail on the server but if I re-check it with Mailwasher it's gone. I've checked it several times by sending mail to myself to and from various accounts and it happens quite a lot, but not every time. Also, and again intermittently across various accounts, Mailwasher often responds with a message that 'plaintext passwords are not supported by this account'. Check the mail again and it's usually OK but it can do the same thing again later. Nearly always does it on first check after start-up. It's really frustrating!Does anybody know what's wrong?I've made no changes other than those Avast makes automatically (IP adresses etc.) but I have changed them back and still have the same problem. I have also updated to the latest version of Avast but still no joy.I've had no response from asking either Avast or Mailwasher t... Read more

Answer:Is Avast preventing emails from downloading?

Can't help with Avast as I don't use it. Other members do and will probably be able to sort your problems. If not and you want to give AVG 7 another go then I will try to help if I can.Your correct in saying that AVG 7 has caused numerous problems but most have been sorted now. There have been a dozen or more threads regarding one issue or another with AVG 7 and its not quite as straight forward as AVG 6 was in setting up.Version 6 was just a quick download and leave as it was to silently get on with its work. Version 7 needs a few tweaks depending on what the problems are.If you can let us know what problems you were having with version 7 then we may be able to answer them before you make a decision to change back or not.

I can't connect to msn messenger. I can from any other computer, just not this one. My hotmail account DOES work from this computer. Just not the messenger. It's ridiculous. I've followed the fixes that msn has to offer, nothing works. Also heard norton might interfere with it, can't uninstall norton on this computer (not my computer) but i did make sure it wasn't protecting msn messneger.

Any ideas as to why this error won't die??? When I try to use trillian, it won't connect to msn either. It will connect to yahoo and aim with no problems...but not msn. The error code I receive with trillian is 12029.

Any help is appreciated Thanks.

Hello,

I had posted this in the installation forum, because I was thinking of reformatting my pc.. I figured I'd see if anyone might know a solution to this problem.. I'm currently running windows vista 32bit and am having problems with my pc. I noticed my pc was running slow the other day and when I looked at the updates tab it states the last time it updated was in March. I tried to update it, it gives me an error that when I look it up states its firewall related. (error 80072EFD) I uninstalled all of my anti virus programs and disabled firewalls... nada. I've tried to have the pcsafety people do a remote assist 3 times and they cant find the problem. We've scanned the pc for spyware and malware 3 different times (Norman antivirus (the tech did this) spy sweeper and also the tool built into windows. They've tried resetting the batch etc with no luck. I'm to the point of just reformatting my pc

One thing I did remember and Im not sure if this is related, is about a month ago I had gotten a virus on my pc that when spy sweeper deleted it, I would get a .dll error when I booted up. I did a checkdisk and it fixed the error but I think around that time is around the time it stopped updating windows. We've ruled out spyware, malware and firewalls.

I can connect to the internet fine etc, but neither windows update, nor defender can update. Please help.

Answer:error 80072EFD at wits end.

Hi Karaliecaitsith

This might help:

In other words, have you added the belowmentioned 3 x Windows Update website addresses to the exceptions list in your Antivirus / Firewall programs.
Windows Update error 80072efd

Applies to all editions of Windows Vista.
Which edition of Windows Vista am I using?
If you receive Windows Update error 80072efd while checking for updates, it usually means that a program running on your computer is preventing Windows Update Services (SVCHOST) from accessing the Internet. Programs that might do this include firewalls, anti-spyware software, web accelerators, Internet security or antivirus programs, and proxy servers.
To correct the problem, you might need to add the Windows Update website addresses to the blocking program's exceptions or "allow" list or allow Windows Update Service to connect to the Internet through port 80 and port 443.

To add the Windows Update websites to a firewall exceptions list
?Windows Firewall ships with this version of Windows and should already include these sites in the exceptions list. If you use a different firewall, refer to the software publisher's help to see how to add these websites to your firewall exceptions list:

Hope this helps. Let us know if you need further assistance.

Answer:Error Code: 80072EFD

Hello deziking and welcome to Seven Forums.

The cause for this error code might be a high number of update requests on the Windows Update servers. Close Windows Update, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and then run Windows Update again. Or you could try to manually select and update just a few updates at a time, run your computer for a while, and if no problems occur, install the next few updates. An added advantage to updating just a few at a time is if an update causes problems you'll know exactly which group it's in. Uninstall that group then reinstall one at a time.

If you continue to receive this error, it might mean that a program running on your computer is preventing Windows Update Services (SVCHOST) from accessing the Internet. Programs that might do this include 3rd party firewalls, web accelerators, antivirus and/or antispyware programs, and proxy servers.

You could try these Microsoft solutions:

Temporary connection-related errors may occur when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update

I formatted back to factory settings my Pavilion dv6.I have a firewall with advanced security on local computer.I also have Easybits Desktop Software. I am unable to download updates or java or adobe. I have tried uninstalling Easybits and deleting the security rules for Easybits.I have tried changing the firewall rules to allow Windows Updates.I have tried using troubleshooter.I have brought via USB drive (Framework 4.5 and 4.6.1, and installed them both.I have tried the Rapid Data Transfer Driver (says computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements for this software).I have added a user authorized to download on this computer in the IPsec settings. I am currently not using the recommended settings to protect my computer (according to the firewall. It still says it's blocking all connections not on the list of allowed programs and it set to notify me when Windows Firewall blocks a new program. (I get no notification, and no downloads even though I've created a rull to allow Windows Update thru the firewall). I'm totally at a loss of what to do next?

I have not been able to run Windows Update for 2 months. I have gone to this forum and to many others and have tried all the suggestions. I have three Windows 7 Professional systems. Two update automatically but this one does not. It fails and then gives the error code: 80072EFD. I've searched for it. Others have found it but when suggestions are made, none of them, that I could find, have helped. For example, I have turned off the Update Services, renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder but no joy.

Here is my system:

hello
i formated my pc, installed windows 7 build 6801, i used the crack "Windows 7 (All Versions) PlusPatcher_V5_Orbit30.exe" to activate windows and to be able to do updates because the official beta was not officially out.

windows update worked well, then i upgraded to build 7000 and i used an official valid product key to activate windows when asked just after the upgrade so windows update was activated with the windows genuine tool.

i started to have problems with windows update with the error 80007002 but i managed to make it work with the vista forums.

i updated to build 7057 and i am stuck with the error 80072EFD, i tried everything, i searched on everything i could find, (even translation of korean websites).

just to avoid certain typical answer that i found on forums, my msn windows live messenger has always been working well, i added the 3 windows update addresses to my firewall witch is KIS2009, and also to the file "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts.txt".

in "system properties", my windows is officially activated, could you please help me to find a way to be able to use windows update because i need it especially to use my bluetooth phone in order to download drivers, it tries to connect but fail.

i have used the troubleshooter of windows 7 for windows update but it does not find anything.

thank you for your forum and your time.
sincerlly yours,

Hi,
I have a 2 month old P750 laptop, after needing to do a restore from a drive back up, I now get the error above.
I then decided to do a toshiba recovery with a clean install and again get the same result of windows update not being able to connect to the server.

I have tried everything I can find for this error including checking the proxy settings for WU, reseting the proxy settings via CMD prompt.

I did notice something interesting while checking validation using the microsoft MGA diagnostic tool, where windows was listed as genuime but of note were some interesting reports like:

Validation code : 0
LegitCheckControl : N/A, hr=0x80070002
signed : N/A, hr=0x80070002

My understanding is the 0x80070002 means it couldn't connect the same as WU or that files are missing.

I have rebuilt the softwaredistribution folders as recommended, disabled all firewalls, removed antivirus / malware software but still no luck.

It seems funny how the same thing happens even after a clean toshiba disk recovery.

Any suggestions?

Cant' update an x86 (vista) system. Keep getting the Code: 8007EFD, which basically says it is firewalled. The only firewall I know of is the Windows firewall. It also seems to be the only firewall that Windows security is aware of either. This happens whether or not the Windows firewall is turned on or not. Have tried the methods here: Windows Update error 80072efd - Windows Vista Help, and here: You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates

I have tried it with all security off (Winpatrol, Spybot, Super anti Spyware, Avast, Windows Defender, and Windows Firewall), still no love. I have checked the coputer up and down for malware and viruses (it's a friends computer) and found and removed Internet AntiVirus, Win32 Adload.R and Video.exe. Have scanned with HJT, SAS, Malawarebytes Anti Malware (mbam), Combofix and GMER. Everything is up to date except of course MBAM, which just released version 1.37 this morning, and I haven't turned that computer on since 4 am (US, EST).

Any suggestions?

Folks

Hope you are well this fine weekend!

I have been in state of combat with my Windows 7 Home edition's inability to search for updates for around 3 months ! We're talking error 80072EFD.....so far I've:

Cleaned the registry (Reg Cure)
Completely and fully uninstalled Mcafee (using their own uninstall tool), and my antispyware program (re-installed now though AVG instead of Mcafee)
Disabled the firewall / altered site permissions
Run both available "Fix Windows Updates" tools
Checked for Malaware (Malabytes)
Ensured that I have the right settings in Component Services - there are no dependency issues

I'm at a loss how to solve this short of re-installing the OS - which would be a major pain as I have a number of big audio orientated programmes to reload.

Incidently, Windows Security Center Services has never been able to start either - I've disabled this; and my addition sound card (Creative X-FI notebook) works but stops working after about an hour (iTunes for example simply stops playing)....onboard IDT audio is fine.

I'm using a Dell Studio 1747, 4gb Ram machine pre-installed with Windows 7 Home bought in Jan 2010.....

I've been recieving the error code recently while trying to update. Now, I've
read the support article that seems to be working for everyone, but not for
me. I've flushed the DNS, there were no hosts files to remove, and now I've
tried the command prompt (running in administrator mode as well). Yet, when
type in 'proxycfg-d' I get a message back that says 'proxycfg-d is not
recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch
file'. I've tried typing it different ways and no matter what, it gives me
the same message. I'm on Vista Home Premium and only behind Windows Firewall.

any other workaround for this?

My computer has been working properly until I got a update for the Windows Update software. After installing the update and Windows Update restarted I immediately received that error when trying to search for updates. I'm not even able to get to the part where I pick the updates, it just fails seconds after I press the button to search for updates.

After googling abit I found out that the error is somehow related to ones internet connection and firewall settings, but even after changing the internet connection and disabling antivirus/firewall I still won't get it to work.

Error: 80072EFD

Computer specifications:
AMD X2 4400+
MSI K9N Neo V2
4GB DDR2 800 MHz
Nvidia 8800GT

Antivirus: Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 (Was not working before installing it either though)

Help appreciated!

Answer:Windows Update error 80072EFD

There is no update to the actual Windows Update service, I'm afraid. Error 80072EF means something is blocking Windows Update from accessing the update server, and this means the 'update' you downloaded was most likely a virus. I recommend installing Malwarebytes immediately. It is free and quite comprehensive in its ability to root out any harmful processes running on your system.

If you have any problems installing this or any other antiviral software, please let us know.

Hi,
I'm running Vista Home Premium. Toshiba had to fix my corrupted motherboard, and since then , I can't update Vista most of the time. On automatic update, about 1/3 of the updates are downloaded and the rest say "failed". On maqnual download attempts, I get an error message, error 80072EFD. I've tried to fix this in many ways, including deleting the temp update file, etc. as per posts elsewhere, to no avail. Toshiba and Microsoft support have been non-supportive. I paid Reg-Cure $30.- for software to fix this, and it did not fix it. I'm concerned about running with important updates absent. Does anyone have a clue as to how I can fix this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello,
I have an Inspiron 1420 Windows Home 32.
When using Windows update I'm getting error 80072EFD. This is new. My computer was working fine before.
I checked for solutions at Microsoft site but nothing seemed to work. This is what I have tried:
1. Firewall exceptions
2. Internet optinos Allow sites

I talked to a Dell agent. I was almost 2 hours with him, but he could not solve the problem.
I have a new router Netgear. Not sure if this is the cause of the problem.

I'm not a computer expert, so I need your help.

So, im pretty certain I've been affected by a virus/trojan of some sort.

Operating System: Windows 7

Problems
-Mcafee firewall is turning off randomly and when I boot up.  Get random messages that it has detected a Trojan, but then says it can't remove it.  Contacted Mcafee yesterday. They did a remote session and told me that Windows Firewall was missing and to contact them.
-I have done virus scans with Mcafee, Malwarebytes and Spybot which all picked up viruses/trojans
-Can't download anything from internet explorer (it says that everything contains a virus).  The file will download and then a message says it has been deleted due to a virus.

Mcafee said that I could also contact their virus removal team for help, but thought I would try here first.

Can you help?

Never posted to a forum like this before so I'll try my best to follow all instructions.  Thanks!!

Answer:Virus preventing me from downloading, turning off Mcafee firewall

I should add that I had to run Malwarebytes (which I downloaded on another computer) off my flashdrive since I could not download it (or anything else) onto the infected PC.

My Windows 7 Pro sp1 machine has been unable to run windows update or update Microsoft Security Essentials (which I have now removed) since the end of October. Strangely, on a re-install of Security Essentials, it can do the initial update and get the current virus definitions, but subsequent updates fail with the 0x80072efd error. Windows Update also fails with a 80072efd error (presumably the "0x" that MSE adds to the error code is not meaningful).

Quicken is also now unable to connect to any of my financial services providers--which has me very nervous. Quicken gives me an OL-297a error.

I've run the following:
ESET scans: initial scans found a couple of trojans (trojandropper.vb.gwztjvb was one of them--but I couldn't even find a reference to that trojan via google), but unfortunately I didn't right down the details of the other and don't know where to find any logs / history. ESET no longer finds anything.

SuperAntiSpyware: scan finds tracking cookies, but nothing more

Windows Security Essentials: initially found a trojan several days ago (sorry to say I don't know which one or where to find the logs, but a different one than ESET found), but last time I ran it it found nothing.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor: on attempt to install for their free scan, I get the following: "Error Message A Network error has occurred. Check your Internet connection and/or proxy settings and click "Retry" to continue."

Hello, i would recommend you using Microsoft Security Essentials as a anti-virus/anti-spyware program, i have found the MSE to be very good. I also would suggest running free of Malwarebytes , follow this site for complete instructions of how to use. How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to scan and remove malware from your computer
Get MSE here : Anti-Malware, Virus, Spyware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials

Hello,

For the past few days I have been unable to sign into my MSN. I get this msg: We can't sign you in to Windows Live Messenger. Theremight be a problem with you Internet Connection. Make sure your computer is connected to the Internet.

When I click "troubleshoot" I see there is no checkmark for "key ports" abd the error codeis 800072efd. And when I got into "Connections" and test my TCP, it says I am not connected to the server.

I have cheked my firewall, updated my Internet Explorer (though I do think I have a service pack 2 update pending, could this be the problem?), restarted my router, ran some program codes i found on the internet from ppl who has similar issues, ended process on anything with "msn" in my task manager...etc etc....nothing seems to work....

it's so odd...it was working fine and then a few hrs later, i get this msg...

any help would be MUCH appreciated
thank you
Raliya

I've been having this problem for two days now. I've done practically everything in this page : http://www.google.com.my/search?hl=en&q=80072efd+live+messenger&btnG=Search&meta= but none seemed to work. the messenger did work once after I checked the "Automatically detect settings..." in LAN settings in Internet Explorer. But after that, the old problem came back again.

Here is a the problem:

1. It says,

We can't sign in to Windows Live Messenger

There might be a problem with your Internet connection. Make sure...bla bla...

Error code:80072efd

2. I used the troubleshooter and when it reached Key Ports,

It says:

Failed to connect to the service. This could be due to improper proxy or firewall settings. Please review your proxy and firewall settings through Windows Live Messenger Options. For Firewall settings, please see the retailer's instructions.

Click on the repair..blabla.

3. So, I checked my firewall and Windows Live was allowed access so there was no prob with it. I also disabled my firewall but still got this error. So, I went into the Connections tab in windows Live options and I opened the troubleshooting log.

This is the content:

Answer:[SOLVED] Error 80072efd in Windows Live Messenger 8.5

Looks like it was just the ISP problem because after messing with the router configurations, I managed to repair the whole thing again. Even though no one replied to this thread but this thread is solved.

Hi all.
I am trying to update multiple Windows 7 64 bit systems in a Domain environment and keep getting error code 80072EFD. This only happens when the PC's are connected to the Domain. I brought one of the systems home and it updated no problem so I know it is not the anti-virus(Symantec Endpoint 11.5 for 64 bit systems) or the Windows Firewall.
I have added the update sites as suggested by Microsoft to the firewall and have tried doing updates with the firewall and Endpoint disabled, no luck.
I also tried it after uninstalling Endpoint, same results.
These are new Dell PC's right out of the box, I removed the resident anti-virus programs and installed Endpoint. I have done this many times in the same Domain for XP systems without any headaches so I am pretty sure it is a Windows 7 64 bit issue.
Even though they are new systems I ran MalwareBytes on them just to make sure there was nothing hinky on them from Dell, nothing found.
Do any of you tech gurus have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Windows update error 80072EFD running 7 64 bit on domain only

That sounds like it's a problem with the network, rather than the PC.
Check the network firewall settings - WU for Win7 uses a slightly different mechanism to AU/WU for XP and different ports may need to be opened for traffic.

You'll need both Windows Updates and BITS enabled.

Hi Everyone,

I am running a Domain from a Windows 2008 R2 Server. At the moment Windows Updates are not working on the Server, or the corresponding clients.

On the Server I see the following error message -

Notice above that the "Most recent check for updates" is listed as never, as is the "Updates were installed".

I don't honestly believe that updates have never worked on the Server despite what is shown above.

From one of my Windows 7 client computers I see the following -

Notice in this instance that the "Most recent check for updates" is listed as the 23/04/2013, and "Updates were installed", is listed as 10/04/2013.

I tried the "Answer" shown in this link -

Windows Update Error 80072efd

After resetting the Proxy settings on the Server I saw the following -

Furthermore I have tweaked various Group Policy settings related to updates and there has been no improvement.

There is no 3rd party Firewall on either my Server or the Clients, so there is nothing to configure on this front.

Finally when setting up new clients they are able to install updates on my network whilst they are not Domain members. However as soon as the new client becomes a Domain member it gets the infamous Error 80072efd message.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Answer:Can't update Windows on Server or Clients (error 80072efd)

The 2efd error is often related to connection problems - check the firewalls, and any GPOs related to Windows Updates.

Customer has Lumia800 and wants to upgrade. We cannot transfer "people" contacts to either outlook.com; live.com or even by Bluetooth to the new phone (only texts will transfer). Its as if the contacts are locked within a cloud account that we cant access. I'm thinking there may have been an original live account that the customer has set up by others that no longer appears within the handset and he has no recollection of? The contacts still appear in the handset but we cant get to copy or sync them. Tried everything we can find on various forums to no avail.

In the last 24 hours my Lumia 640, 735 and my dad's 635 (all running Windows Phone 8.1) have been unable to sync Outlook email. Each attempt gets the error code 80072EFD. I've tried switching off wifi (data is always off), rebooting, and performed soft resets on all devices but only got limited success. All devices managed to sync sporadically a couple of times in the last few hours but keeps failing again afterwards.
If the issue was just confined to my two Lumias then I would just wait it out and see what happens, however my dad's 635 is having the same problem too, which suggests it may be a wider issue.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue in the last day?
Also, can anyone offer other potential solutions?
Cheers in advance. :)

I'm having startup issues with a Windows 10 Build:
Cumulative update for Windows 10 ver. 1511
KB3192444. (I hope I copied it correctly).

Before this update is installed the problem doesn't exist, after it's installed it does.
I posted this issue here but have not gotten any help.
Because windows 10 automatically installs updates I needed to go into Group Policy Editor-Computer Configuration-Windows Components-Windows Update and set it to
"Notify for download and notify for install"

But, when I go back into settings for windows update advanced settings, the choose how updates are installed has remained with the same 2 options.

How can I be sure that Windows 10 does not install this update????
Does changing this setting in GPE work ok?

Any help will be appreciated,

Hi,
Right now i have about 56 updates pending, most of them office updates, and a couple of Windows updates.
I've discovered that a update is preventing my PC from sleeping, as when i do a system restore back to before i updated my PC will sleep, and then instaill them again my PC wont sleep.

I'm assuming its a windows update rather than an office update causing this problem.
Is there a better way to see which update is causing the problem rather than instailling each update, one by one?

I keep getting Error message: Install Failure after Windows updates are downloaded and Windows attempts to install those updates.

The download is successfull, however, after Windows 7 attempts to install those updates I get this message:

Configuring Windows Update. Do Not Turn off computer.

After Windows attempts the installations of those updates, I get the following message: Failure configuring Service Pack. Reverting Changes. Error_install_failure (0x80070643).

I contacted Microsoft on the problem via emails....they went through a number of trouble shooting techniques....but after all of their recommendations, all they could tell me was to reinstall Windows 7.

I really would not like to do that. Do you have any idea what the problem is?

I have a Compaq desktop at home running Windows 7 Home Premium. My girlfriend has a user account on it that she uses from time to time. She sometimes needs to restart the computer. When she tries to do that, many times the shut down screen shows "Install updates and Restart" as the default action. Is there a way to eliminate that option for her account or at least make Restart or Shutdown, without installing updates, the default choice? She is careful about changing the option, but I am concerned she might slip up one time.

I have no desire to upgrade to Windows 10 at this time (Yes, I know the free upgrade offer is supposed to end at the end of June). On my account, I manually go through the list of new available updates and remove any that are related to preparing the computer for Windows 10 or actually downloading and installing it.

Hello guys, I hope I've posted this in the correct place. I'm only averagely tech minded so I'll try my best

I'm running Windows XP (sp3) and mostly use Chrome browser with IE occasionally.

My Avira Free has refused to net update for over 24hrs, and when I look at Internet Options I see the 'use proxy server' button is checked although I've previously un-checked it. I've managed to download manually from Avira and am currently running a scan with it & Malwarebytes.

I have some log files but I take notice of the warning against posting hijack this logs in this forum.

There are several processes & files that look decidedly fishy to me but am not sure of where/how to proceed. "ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:49717" for example!

I also use Malwarebytes free version & update & scan regularly with this & Avira free AV.

I usually scan any potentially fishy files with AV & MWB before downloading but something's gotten through (could be another user when I've not been here is responsible) or can hardware like a cheap chinese USB hub be responsible?

Answer:malware &/or virus (I think) is preventing AV updates

Welcome joolzLet's run these as I feel you have a rootkit. Many malwares like to change the proxy setting on you. Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit. Now check if the internet is working again. Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator. If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it. To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.Click the Start Scan button.Do not use the computer during the scanIf the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.... What can I do to prevent updates from preventing me from using my computer?
Apparently whoever designed Windows update never considered the possibility of people using small SSD drives that only have a fraction of the space required to run applications. Everything worked under Windows 7, although I did have to do some tweaking to get it to install apps directly to drive E: (my multi-terabyte hard drive). After installing Windows Update, I had to do the same registry tweak to make it install programs on drive E:, and it worked fine the first six weeks or so, but then it started routinely breaking one or two of my applications with each update. The problem was initially tedious to fix, but I eventually got everything working. However, I was not successful at getting Windows to comply with running my Chrome browser from E: I finally relented, and moved as many of the commonly used apps to drive C: (the SSD) and consequently had to set the cache size smaller. Everything was fine for another month or so.
However, beginning sometime in November, Windows updates started failing. It schedules an update, runs the update, reboots my computer, says the update failed, and reboots the computer again, uninstalled the update, and then it works. This was an annoyance, but since it only happened once a month, I put up with it.
Recently however, Windows has started retrying updates every few days, and doesn't bother warning me in advance or asking my permission. It just unceremoniously shuts... Read more

Hello.

I posted in the Vista section about trouble I am having with updates installing. One person replied that "[b]ecause of the large number of problems in category items that [I] posted, and the corrupted SFC store," before I do anything else, I should post in this forum to make sure my system isn't infected.

To briefly summarize what I posted over there, I can't get some updates to install, and I have some corrupted files (or corrupted something . . . I honestly don't know enough to know what the problem is).

Answer:Possible malware infection preventing updates

Hello ti2,

I'm not seeing any malware in these logs. You can run an online scan and see if it detects anything lurking about. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

**Vista users - right click on the IE icon and run as administrator

Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...avwebscan.html

1. Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

2. To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:Close any open programs
Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

3. Click Run at the Security prompt. The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database. Please be patient as this can take several minutes.Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
Click View scan report at the bottom.

Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply

hello everyone,
my sons laptop has acquired a virus. (an acer aspire 5100 on xp)basically it is preventing any windows updates & any security scans. It is clever; for example if i attempt trend micro house call i get blue screen & the pc shuts down immediately. When i reboot it refers to fat32 as follows:
checking file system on c the type of the file system is fat32.

i have current subscription to trend micro internet security for three pc's but can't download due to the virus.
i am not a "power user" but i am capable of starting the the laptop in safe mode & carrying out basic tasks.(but it appears to be stopping that unless i'm doing something wrong with the "f8" key)

how serious is this & is there the idiots guide to a resolution?
thanks for looking bob (uk)

Hi Guys,

I could use some help getting rid of some malware that has been vexxing me for quite a while now. Looking back at my windows update history, I have been unable to install Vista Security Update KB979683 since 16 Apr 10 with it attempting to install everyday since then and always getting the same error 'FFFFFFFF'

I was unable to get a RootRepeal log as the program would use up all my RAM (2GB) and then just exit itself after about 20 mins.

My logs are attached. Thank You!

Answer:Malware preventing Vista security updates

Welcome to Major Geeks!

You ran steps in safe boot mode not normal boot mode. You should be running in normal boot mode to get proper logs unless that is not possible.

Also you skipped running step 6 of the READ & RUN ME so we cannot tell whether you have a Master Boot Record rootkit infection or it is just the disk emulation software you did not disable. To properly continue, you will have to run this step and then rerun MGtools and attach a new log; however, based on the sum of all logs, I don't think you are having malware problems.

While problems with Windows Updates can sometimes becaused by malware, it is quite frequently not malware. It could just issues with Windows itself or it could be your own protection sofware. You could try shutting down Symantec and Windows Defender and see if you can update.

I have a similar problem. Bun not from automatic updates. I updated Adobe reader(it says "Install security update). Since then It appeared in system Tray an yellow triangle with an exclamtion mark on it. If I click on it, it disappears, but my network connection has stopped working. It connects normaly, but the computer works like it would not be connected to the Internet. I unistaled the update, but the problem reappeard after 2-3 days. Now it looks that it is all OK, but I do not know what am I suposed to do.

I have a paid version of AVG Internet Security 2012 which commenced in August 2012. I've had paid versions in the previous two years and until the last two months have had no problems.
In the past few days when I switch on my PC (Windows XP with Mozilla Firefox browser, wired connection with BT) the automatic AVG update will not proceed, nor will a manual attempt.
Within a few minutes of switching on the following Windows warning box appears on the screen:
'The software you are installing for this hardware - Non-Plug and Plug Drivers - has not passed the Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. For some reason, whenever windows 8.1 updates, internet explorer stops working. Every time I try to get on the internet, I just keep getting a message that 'this page cannot be displayed'. Skype still works, so the problem seems to be internet explorer itself.

I have decided to switch to google chrome to fix the problem, but I can't do so without getting on the internet.

I would like to restore the computer to a point in which it worked, and I have one restore point which I'm certain will work, but the problem is, immediately after restoring, windows automatically updates, which kind of undermines the entire purpose of the restore. I have tried changing the update settings so it will restore without updating, but as soon as the system restores, my changes are undone and windows then proceeds with the stupid updates.

I just want to get on the internet somehow to install google chrome! (and no, I can't just copy and paste from the computer I'm currently on because this one has windows 7).

Any ideas?

Thanks,
smile puppy

Unplug your router, then do your system restore. You then have as much time as you need to configure Windows Update not to auto check.

I have 93 updates for XP & Office 2003 which I cannot install. I have stopped and re-started the update service & tried everything else I can find on the web.

I would be very grateful for any help anyone can provide!

Answer:A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed

Is your windows update allowed to install updates automatically? Check your settings in the security center. I hope you are updating via a broad band connection. Also does windows download the updates and stalls have way thru the installation? During the install of the downloads, Windows will ask you to accept certain agreements. You may not be seeing these and think Windows has stopped installing. Windows will not move forward unless you respond to these agreement. When downloading be sure all the downloads are complete and upon the installation part, Minimize your screen to see these agreements. IE7 download and install is one of the biggest culprites. It hides behind your Download and install screen.
Hope this helps.

My computer had 45 updates that were stuck in downloading updates for 12 - 24 hours+.
I decided to stop the downloading updates process to find out why my computer was stuck in downloading updates.
I followed instructions from a Windows forum and turned off my avast, malwarebytes and windows firewall and tried to download the 45 updates again.
The 45 updates were stuck in downloading updates for another 12 - 24+ hours.

So I went to a different forum and did the following to the computer:

- Ran Microsoft FixIt, received error 0x80070424
- Tried to run update. Still hangs
- Went into msconfig and went to selective start-up and disabled windows
update. Still hanfs.
- Noticed Chromium browser was installed; uninstalled it and deleted subkeys
in the registry
- Ran malwarebytes and discovered 3 viruses:

Registry Keys:
PUP.Optional.InstallCore, HKU\S-1-5-21-609468153-1500422488-916508973-1000\SOFTWARE\csastats, , [a8b7792627732313b7b7d02a30d3c13f],

Registry Values: 1

Removed malware and rebooted.

We've tried for 4 days now and the computer is still stuck in Checking for updates. It's been checking for over 48 hours now. I need to use this computer for work. Please help.
