Browsing shared Vista or 7 folder over LAN shows outdated or partial list of files

Question: Browsing shared Vista or 7 folder over LAN shows outdated or partial list of files

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the XP subforum or the Vista/7 one, as it relates to both. Hope I made the right choice. :-)

My problem is this: I have a Windows 7 Ultimate desktop (recently upgraded from Vista Home Premium) with a C:\downloads\ folder that is shared over the network as "downloads."

On a second computer, an XP computer, one I set up the correct sharing permissions (that is, to give access to Computer 2's username), I can then browse to \\desktop\downloads\.

The problem is this: The file list show in \\desktop\downloads\ is outdated, and many files and folders are missing. There is nothing special about these files or folders. They're not hidden or anything.

For instance, opening up C:\downloads\ on my desktop shows a folder with 3,118 items -- files and folders.

Accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from another computer shows 111 items.

Interestingly, accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from the desktop shows the correct amount: 3,118 items.

I have tried refreshing the file list, obviously, from the second computer. I have also tried accessing \\desktop\downloads\ from a third computer (also XP) on the same network, with similar problems... leading me to believe the problem is on the Windows 7 computer.

The W7 desktop has no problem accessing other shares.

I should also add that all three of these computers are on the same workgroup and can ping each other.

Also, as a test, I created a brand-new folder, C:\downloads2\, shared it as "downloads2," and moved all the files into that folder. Accessing \\desktop\downloads2\ has the same exact problem, unfortunately...

Any ideas on what could be going on??

Preferred Solution: Browsing shared Vista or 7 folder over LAN shows outdated or partial list of files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Browsing shared Vista or 7 folder over LAN shows outdated or partial list of files

Try disabling UAC, i had my own issue with network files with Win7 and after i disabled UAC everything worked perfectly.

Also, try making a share that isn't in the root of the drive Or put it in the public folder and see if that works correctly.

I have a computer running Vista Home Premium. On it, I have a folder shared read-only over the network as "downloads."

I can access the folder from other computers on the LAN, using \\computer\downloads. My problem is, sometimes the browsing computer (an XP Pro SP3 machine) will get an outdated list of the directory.

For instance, I have added many files in the past couple of weeks. Yet, for some reason, even today one of the computers would show the most recent file as being from late January. I've tried refreshing and shift-refreshing. Doesn't help.

What's weird is that this behavior seems to vary from client computer to client computer. One of my XP Pro SP3 machines will have the most-recent list of files, and the other one will still be a little bit behind, not showing the newest files.

I can't figure this out! I would think that the problem must lie on the side of the client, yet I have never had this problem previously in all my years of XP-to-XP file sharing.

Is there some sort of network cache present in XP that can be cleared? Or any other ideas on how to solve this?

Thanks!

Answer:Browsing shared folder over LAN sometimes shows outdated list of files; sometimes OK

It's not unnatural for what shows in My Network Places (XP) or Network (Vista) to be out of date, but usually not that out of date. In My Network Places click 'view workgroup computers' and you should force an update.

On any (properly working) network one computer becomes the Master Browser. It determines what's on the network and periodically updates the other computers.

Hello all, thanks for your help.

Goal :
Sharing a Vista 64 Home Premium Folder with an XP Laptop.

Problem :
XP can view folders, but not files, in the Vista Shared Folder. Files that were in the folder when sharing was setup in Vista are accessible, but new files are not displayed. New Folders do display, however.

System Setup :
MSHOME network, Vista private network sharing of a single directory. Vista connected by cable, XP laptop by Wireless.

Already Done :
- Triple-Checked Permissions (guest, everyone, etc.)
- Normal Vista Sharing configuration in place
- Checked through specific settings for 'guest' and 'everyone' access of the folder, including 'read files..'
- Checked the net in detail..no luck

The folder I'm sharing is a P2P download folder. Sharing doesn't work properly when the program is on or off, so it doesn't seem to affect anything.

Other things I've done :
- Turned 'indexing' on
- Made sure 'read only' was not enabled under folder settings.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
acijanos

Answer:Vista Shared Folder Files not Updating

Update :

The P2P stuff isn't a factor - created a new directory and shared - same problem.

I'm wondering if it may have something to do with XP. (service pack 3)

I share files on my home network between my desktop PC and my laptop. I often move files between the two computers by placing folders on the desktops and then working with them or moving them to specific folders. The network for my laptop lists its desktop folder, but for the desktop PC, the topline \Users root folder is listed, not the desktop. Network and sharing work just fine. But how do I list the shared PC desktop folder so that I don?t have to drill down through the \Users file structure to reach the desktop folder?

Answer:List specific shared folder in Network, not root folder

Tried again, and now it's working correctly. Hmmmm...

Hi,
I hope somebody has run into this - I am pulling my hair out. About two months ago I started deploying Windows 7 pro 64 bit PC's in small workgroup setting with less than 12 computers.  The existing network was/is XP. It is a simple router/NAT device
at the internet side, and internally there is a switch. The router hands out addresses via DHCP.
What I am seeing is Win7 computers show up twice - or sometimes not at all when browsing the network. The computers that don't show up can be forced to show up properly by typing in their name in the address bar - voila they show up in the list. Hitting
f5 repeatedly will eventually clear it up. They are accessible via UNC. Its the list that looks wonky.

Details on the config - Dell optiplex GX620's. Network discovery is on, password protected file sharing is set to yes. Other things I have done to resolve:
Put all machines on static addresses, install and configure a WINS server, removed IPv6 via MS "Fit it". All machines are confirmed to be in hybrid Netbios mode. I shut off home groups in the services cpl. I forced the computers on 24/7. I disabled the power
settings on the network adapters. Finally, I disabled LLDP & LLDPR on the adapters.
Has anybody seen this? Can anybody help?

Some days ago I accepted the upgrade to v6 of Thunderbird. In the next day or so, when I started Tbird, it displayed a small Safe Mode window. which I had not asked for, at least not intentionally. I had not heard of Safe Mode for Tbird, and I didn't know how to deal with the window. In trying to get out of S.M, I flailed around and managed to lose my customizations. I have probably restored most of those, so this is not an issue. --- However, my main problem is this: in my Folder List, none of the folders have text names; they all have numbers instead. They work like the text names, but it's *very* hard to navigate. When I click on a folder, the text name of that folder is displayed at the top of the screen, in normal fashion. -- My question is, how can I make the Folder List display text names? --- Thanks.

I have a small home network where I share a few folders between PCs (windows XP). All are in the same workgroup name, IP subnet & same router. When I open 'My Network Places' to browse shares, the shares on the other PCs are listed as 'The Internet' resources rather than 'Local Network'.

This causes Windows to sometimes prompt me for permission to open a file from one of the other shared folders.

Does anyone know a way around this?

Answer:Solved: shared folder on LAN shows as 'The Internet'

This is a cosmetic defect, but I've heard of it before. Here's one person's resolution of the issue.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/23996-42-shared-files-show-internet-heading-local-network

I have no idea about being unable to share files, however I did have an issue with my shared folders showing up under the Internet heading instead of Local Network in My Network Places. After reading for several hours, I found it has something to do with IE7, which I had recently installed. This is the fix I found:

1. Go to Start/Control Panel/Internet Options/Security/Local Intranet/Sites/Advanced

2. Add the computer name of the system whose shared folders you are trying to "move" in this format:
file://ComputerName
Click Add

3. Repeat step 3 for next computer name if there are others on your local network.
After you’ve entered them all, click Close, Ok, Ok

I did not check or uncheck anything, only added the computer names. To clarify, when I clicked on “Sites” everything was already checkmarked for “automatically detect intranet network” and then once I clicked on Advanced the checkbox there was NOT checked. I did not touch any of these settings.

When I finished I opened My Network Places and it had worked. You'll need to do the same thing to each computer you are having the issue with. I hope this works for you! Click to expand...

Hello everyone,

I'm using a laptop (with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed) as a DVR and media streamer to all other devices in the house.
My TV recordings are recorded into a temporary folder and when the recording is finished the program moves the files into the My Videos folder.

The My Videos folder is shared so we can watch the recordings from the Xbox downstairs or other Windows 7 devices in the house.
This worked pretty well in the past but for some reason new recordings (or downloads) aren't shared by default anymore. All files have a small lock icon (shared with nobody) and I have to manually share new files within an already shared folder.

This is pretty annoying and takes away the convenience.

I would appreciate any tip to fix this problem to have all files in the shared folder(s) shared by default.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:New files aren't shared in shared folder

It's easy once you know how, just right click the C:/Video's folder and choose properties, Security tab then Advanced button, then just put a check mark where it says "Replace all Child Object Permission Entries with Inheritable Permissions Entries from this Object, then hit Apply, OK....this will fix the problem you described.

I pinned the Files folder in my onedrive.live.com account to the Windows 10 Start menu, and also saved this folder as a favorite in Edge, which is my default browser. But after closing Edge, when I then click the onedrive.live.com tile in the start menu, or after opening Edge, if I click the OneDrive link in the favorites bar, OneDrive opens my Shared folder rather than the desired Files folder. To see the Files folder, I can click "OneDrive" in the menu bar. Moreover, after the Files folder has been opened, if I then add a tab and click on OneDrive in the favorites bar, OneDrive correctly opens the Files folder, and will continue to operate this way (the correct way) as long as I don't close the browser. When I saved my OneDrive Files folder as a favorite in Firefox, I experienced the same problem. So the problem does not appear to be related to Edge.
How can I make OneDrive.Live.com always open in the Files Folder the first time?

I have all 4 PC's in the office using Windows 7 Pro. I have one computer that is designated to house my share folder for scanning documents and attaching them to our management system.  We are finding that multiple problems occur - not at once and at
different times .  Sometimes, the document within the shared folder called "IMAGEBATCH" will not delete.  Sometimes that document deletes, and then re-appears within the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes the document will not
scan through the network to the IMAGEBATCH folder.  Sometimes we get an error saying we "don't have permission to delete this file".  These circumstances occur on all computers, including the computer that houses the original file IMAGEBATCH.
Sometimes in the day, each computer that is supposedly looking at the same IMAGEBATCH folder see different files.
Restarting the computer clears the problems, but then start right back up at irregular intervals, sometimes in the morning, sometimes in the middle of the day.
I did find a duplicate file named IMAGEBATCH on the "C" drive of that PC, so I deleted that, but the symptoms are still there.  This is the only shared folder in our entire network.  What can I be missing?  I have checked to make
sure it is a share folder, all the permissions are in place, and that we all can see the folder through the network.  What am I missing?  I am the owner and administrato... Read more

Edit: Sorry I made the topic an forgot to change the title. Should be: "List Files in Folder With Ignore List" or something along those lines.

I'm a game server admin. What I want to do is generate a text file which will be used when I launch the server. An example of the text file I want to produce is here:

Code:
sv_name "PlayMyServer"
sv_maxplayers 16
sv_mapcycle_add wizard ctf3
sv_mapcycle_add bloodgulch ctf3
sv_mapcycle_begin
Line 1 and 2 will be hard coded into the script. In fact, this section will have more lines but for this example, I've cut it down. Lines 3 and 4 are codes that add all maps to the server: wizard and bloodgulch. These are *.map files. Line 5, like lines 1 and 2, are to be hard coded.

The map files are in the \maps subdirectory of the game. What I'm looking to do, is create a batch file that will generate the above text. That is, getting a list of map files in the \maps directory and concatenating it with the proper text before and after. I also want to have the .map extension removed from the lists.

The \maps subdirectory has a few *.map files that aren't actual maps, in fact I don't know what they are. So, I would like to be able to allow for exclusions, which I will hard code as well. (i.e.: ui.map, sounds.map)

Note that this script will probably be saved somewhere in the Quick Launch folder and I want to specify the location of the output and the name of the file. It will be in a text file format.

If ... Read more

Answer:List Files in Folder With Ignore List

DIR "D:\Data\" /s > "D:\List.txt"

This script will make a text listing all files in a folder.

D:\Data is where the folder is located and D is the drive where the text file "List" will be created. Note Windows 7 will NOT allow the text file to be created on C-drive.

You may have to edit to get what you want in the text files. I have found this script to be very useful.

Hi
I've mapped some folders in my laptop (Windows 7 Professional 64-bit).
I wanted them offline so I chose make available offline. After some days I've removed 'Make available offline'.
Now, the problem is when I open a file in shared folder for modification it's taking a local copy the changes are not reflecting in server.
What I dont understand is when I removed offline, how am getting a local copy instead of the files in server.
Thanks.

Hi,
I just got Vista working and i'm surprised by how much it has improved since the betas...or even RC1. There are a couple things I can't seem to fix though: 1st ( a networking problem ), I'm trying to share folders in Vista in a way similar to how I'm used to doing it in XP. I got the folder to appear and I can see it from my xp computer but I'm denied access when I try opening it. So far I've done the following: Changed the network type to 'private network', turned ON network discovery, turned ON file sharing, and have the remaining 4 categories turned off in the Network and Sharing Center. Then I right clicked the folder I wanted to share, properties, sharing tab, Advanced sharing, checked 'share this folder' and clicked apply.

Yes, your friend can add files to your shared folder, provided you have the proper permission settings for the folder set up. On your PC, go to Onedrive and navigate to the folder you have shared, and click on "share", then "invite people", then add the people you want to allow, then change "recipients can only view" to "recipients can edit". Somehow files and folders in "Shared Documents" have become inaccessible through the directory tree. When I try to access the folders and files through the directory tree I run into *.idx files. This is a new condition for me. Can anyone fill me in?

I have a PC with Windows 8.1 and a Mac with Mavericks. I have a folder on the Mac that is shared with the PC. When I'm on the PC and I try to open a file that is shared by the Mac, such as an ISO file (a disk image), then I get a message saying that I cannot open the file, or the file is in use (it depends on the app/filetype). I have the same problem when I open a video file. Strangely, text files and PDF files are just fine. And if I copy any of the problematic files to the local Windows disk, then I can open them just fine.

The specific error messages are:

- AVI files opened in VLC: "Your input can't be opened. VLC is unable to open the MRL."
- ISO files opened by Windows Explorer: "Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file."

This only started happening after I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on the PC and Mavericks on the Mac. Mavericks upgraded its SMB version from SMB1 to SMB2, so perhaps that is related?
Does anyone know what the problem might be, and how I could fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:W8.1: Can't open files on SMB folder shared by a Mac

Welcome to Eight Forums,

The upgrade seems to be an issue in your case. I'd suggest for you to download the latest driver from the manufacturer's site for your network adapter, see if that helps. I don't think that there's a way to revert your Maverick's SMB version.

Please post an update or your progress.

This PC is running XP SP3 and any files in the folder when it is shared are available and can be opened no problem but any new files moved to or created in this folder are can't be accessed by any of the other computers, as in "Windows media player cannot access this file. Just tonight, a folder I have within my My Music folder (containing my .mp3 files) started only showing folders and files that have names that begin with A-F...only.  Windows doesn't show the rest of the folders and files in there named G-Z.  The folders and files ARE THERE, because if you type their full path in the address bar, they show up (and the files still play fine in iTunes).Again, if you open up the folder they simply don't appear.  Even if you do a Windows Search, they still don't appear.  I even tried copying this problem folder to my external hard drive, but the folders and files still do not appear!  (THIS IS ONLY HAPPENING WITH THIS PARTICULAR FOLDER).I'm completely bewildered.  There have been no major updates or changes to the computer...I'm sooo lost. Thanks in advance for any and all help!!!>>running Windows XP Media Center Edition SP2.

Hi all,

This is a problem that's been bothering me for days. I use an older computer (Windows XP Professional, SP2) that's relatively slow, but has a decent amount of disk space to store some of my files. While I store files on there, I prefer to access the files using my newer computer (Windows XP Home, SP2) since it's faster to extract/unzip files.

I can access all the folders & subfolders in the Shareddocs directory of my old computer perfectly, *except* ZIP/RAR files. Once I unzip the archive, my new computer can access all the files. But if I try to use my new computer to unzip the archives, it's telling me that it cannot find the file & that I don't have permissions for it.

So far, I've tried unchecking the "Simple File Sharing" box, and checking the permissions, and I have given everyone Full Control on my old computer. But I am still unable to extract/view the archives.

Any idea what might be wrong? I can just unzip everything on the old computer, but it's so horrendously slow I'd like some sort of solution to this.

Thanks in advance!

However, when I move (Ctrl+X) a file to the shared folder on the pc with win7, the file does not apear when I go to the shared folder from the XP pc.

Anyone knows what Im doing wrong?

BY THE WAY, is there a way to share the entire C drive or we are strict to the public folders? Its wierd that I gave full access permissions to the C drive, yet an error occurs while trying to access from XP. Only the public folders can be accessed.

BY THE WAY, is there a way to share the entire C drive or we are strict to the public folders? Its wierd that I gave full access permissions to the C drive, yet an error occurs while trying to access from XP. Only the public folders can be accessed.

You still need to allow premission to access the shared files on the Win7 machine. Just set up permissions on the Win7 machine by going to "Network and sharing center" and then to the left choose "Change Advance sharing settings". The select the settings in the pictures below.

You should also have access to the entire C drive once you do that.

I've been using my XP machine as my file server and it works perfectly.

I run XP Home. When I click on My Network Places, it opens up to a Shared Doc Folder. In that folder are three sub folders called, Shared Music, Shared Pictures, and Shared Video. Each of these folders contain two .vbs script files all with weird names like "logo_anim_loop" and "nick on amp". I have no idea what these files are. They can not be deleted. Can anyone tell me what these might be and why they are there or how to delete them?
(I posted this in the XP section but got no response, so I'm trying here.)

I have two computers, a desktop running Windows 7 Professional and a netbook running Windows 7 starter edition. I have shared some folders on the netbook and can access them from the desktop computer. However, I am unable to share folders on the desktop. From the netbook, I can see the desktop on my network and also the shared folders, but when I try to open them I am told I have insufficient authorization to so so. I have checked the authorizations on the desktop side and can see that "Everyone" has permission to open these folders for reading, and that the authorization extends also to subfolders and files.

I've been trying all day to resolve this problem and would appreciate any help.

When I set up these permissions, why doesn't Windows warn me that there's something else that will impede what I'm trying to do?

Answer:Insufficient authorization to see files in shared folder

You might try going into the Security tab of the Desktop's main drive or folder you want to share then add "Everyone" there as well. Security tab>Edit button>Add button>type Everyone for object name, apply, ok and so forth.

Please help

Answer:cant open shared folder on vista from xp

I have a similar problem but no solution.

After doing everything I can to share files from a Vista machine over a network, I have come to the conclusion that the only Vista files that can be shared over a network are files in the "Public" folder.

I have two computers, one Vista desktop (Home Premium 2006) and one XP Laptop (Professional), and would like to create a shared folder between them. I have wireless and both the computers are on the network but the difficult thing is, so are five others that I don't want to have access to the shared folder. How could I create this shared folder (in which I could place whatever files from either system) and still have it protected from the other computers on our network?

Thanks

Hi Guys,

I am migrating my user's home folders from one storage server to another storage server. We have offline files sync enabled and users use to work at work in offline mode and the files/folders sync when they connect to the company's network.
I have done some testing before migrating and found an issue that need assistance from your guys.

I pick a test user say "Testuser01" and logout him out from the system. I have copied all home drive stuff from Sharedserever-1 (Old) to Sharedserever-2 (New) for test user and make the required changes in AD profile and GPO for drive mapping. As
the Testuser01's documents pointing to H-drive (My Documents) are available offline on laptop in Documents folder. Now I have worked offline as "tesetuser01" and created some test files but when I logged in and connected
with my company's network H-drive is it correctly pointing to new Sharedserever (i.e. Sharedserever-2) and Documents path also redirected to the new server location. However the files created in offline mode were disappeared instead of sync with
the new Sharedserever.
I could not figure out why and I don't know if it something with CSC - Client-Side Caching folder ?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards
Sarwar

Additional Note:
Performing a net user * /DELETE has no effect on the share that is not working properly. Also when performing a new use the share does not appear in the list.

I keep having a re-occurring issue.

I start by creating a shared folder on a Windows 2000 Server. From my Windows XP Pro laptop I'm able to access the files in the shared folder. At some point either from logging off the network or network changes that occur over night, I lose share. By losing the share I mean that I can access the folder that is shared but it does not show any files in the folder even though there are files. If I turn off the server, I get the same empty folder results. I've tried registering and flushing the DNS several times and reassigning my IP address. I'm at a loss as to why the share will not show any files. If I create a new share on the same server it will work fine until I leave for the day and return the next day. I would like to understand more about how shares are created and handled in Windows and then I might be able to figure out why this problem is occurring.

Thanks,
Mark

I curently use a shared folder on my desktop to store all my music collection that then allows me to either use WMP on my desktop or WMP / Itunes on my laptop. I am currently trying to add all the missing artwork. a lot of my artwork can be seen in WMP but not itunes. I know how to get the album art into itunes but when i look at the shared network folder on the laptop it doesnt show any files except for the ripped music files. On the desktop i can see the all the files. I guess there is a setting to allow this but I can't seem to find it! Desktop is XP, laptop is vista. All ideas welcome, many thanks :-)

Trying to find a solution to this issue.

2 XP Media Center SP3 PCs connected via Ethernet to router. PC A has Shared Documents folder with permissions set to allow 'Everyone' Full Control. Only Windows Firewall onboard, NOD32 virus scanner. PC B can see/open files from share on PC A, but any attempts to move or copy result in error message "your current security settings do not allow this action". Both PCs have IE6, File & Print Sharing enabled and turning off Windows Firewall doesn't change anything. What else can I try? Thanks.

Answer:Moving/copying files from shared folder causes error

Make sure you have the permissions set on both the Security tab as well as the Sharing tab.

On the shared folder security permissions, make sure that you go to the Advanced settings and check the box that tells it to replace the permissions on child objects as well.

I've been using file and printer sharing for quite a while on various home networks, but this problem has me completely stumped.

I have one folder on each of 2 Windows XP Pro machines shared. I can access some of the files in this shared folder but not others. The problem is not specific to size (some are larger, others are small) or type (some are EXE's, others are .TXT's). I simply get the "Access denied" error when trying to open, run, or copy some of the files.

I've tried deleting the folder and re-creating it, and that doesn't work. I've disabled Windows firewall on both systems. That didn't work either.

Hi. I'm having a problem accessing a shared folder on a Vista PC from a computer running XP SP3.

There are three computers in my network, each connected to a router. The Vista computer is wired, the other two wireless.

My computer is running Vista SP1, while my old computer and my father's computer are running XP SP3.

I have shared my Music folder on the Vista PC with proper security settings, Everyone is allowed to read from the folder.

I can access \\MyComputer\Music\ from my father's computer without issue. It shows up in My Network Places and is fully accessible. However, it does now show up on my old computer, and when I type in "\\MyComputer\Music" it comes up as cannot be found.

I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. I can share between my father's computer and my computer completely, and I can share between my father's computer and my old computer, but I can't seem to access my computer from my old computer.

Also, I can see MyComputer in the Workgroup on my old computer, however when clicked it says \\MyComputer is not accesible, you might not have permission... Yet I can access \\MyComputer fine through my father's computer.

Thank you anyone who is able to help.

Answer:Solved: Can't access Vista shared folder from XP

Nevermind, I have figured it out moments after posting this.

I had forgotten my old computer is static while my father's computer is DHCP, and had only added the DHCP range to my firewall's trusted list.

I just wanted to share my Kodak Pictures folder under my Picture folder under my user profile folder on Vista onto my home network. Password Sharing is OFF, I also disabled Public Folders since I want to only share specific folders I am already working on and not go through the copy paste into Public Folders.

So I went to my profile folder and then to my Pictures folder and then right-clicked the Kodak Pictures folder and clicked on Share. I set up the Share so everyone can have co-owner access (just me and my fiance here anyways) but for some bizarre reason it shared out everything up to the C:\Users folder !?!

What the Hell!

I wanted to share the downlevel folder and Vista in it's brilliance seems to want to, or need to, share everything before it which isn't what I wanted...

Any ideas how to only share the folder and not everything above it? (wasn't sure if this post should be under Vista or Networking but seems more Vista related than networking so...)

Hello,
I'm encountering a problem on different computers.
Internet Explorer 11 and Edge are not able to open files from a shared folder located on the same computer.
For example, let's say I typed this "\\10.100.100.10\folder_1\DOC_FILE.doc" on the address bar.
The browser then shows : "This page can't be displayed".
When I display more information, the error "INET_E_RESOURCE_NOT_FOUND" appears.
I have already tried to uncheck "Enable TCP Fast open" and it is still not working.
It seems like this problem cannot be reproduced on all IE11/EDGE browsers, and can be encountered on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Any ideas ?
Best regards

Hi,

I have shared one folder and in security I added "everyone" and given full permission (full control, write, etc.)

But still I cannot access some pdf files in the folder from another computer. I can open the folder but when I try to open the pdf file I'm getting some permission error. Then I went to the first computer I selected all pdf files >> right click >> properties >> I changed security and added everyone there. Then I could open the pdf files from another computer.

Now the problem is every time when I add some files in the shared folder. I have to select all the files inside and add permission even though the folder itself is given full permission. I wonder why is it so?

Answer:shared folder with full permission cannot access files inside

If the same users access this folder. Add each person individually with Full Control rather then the Everyone Group to the permissions of the folder. Or You can add the users to the Power Users Group. Then allow the Power Users Group to have Full control.

Hello,

I can access many other shared folders on his computer with my pc no problem. I can even listen to other music files on his computer in other shared folders. For some reason or other I cannot play his music files or copy his music files when trying to access the music1 folder on his desktop. If i'm thinking correctly the root folder must be shared to allow access to subfolders, but in this case...the shared folder (music1) is the root folder that was created on his desktop. any ideas?

I wasn't sure if this was the right forum, but I have Vista.

Yesterday, I noticed as I went into my folders that my "VIDEOS" folder was no longer showing up. If I do a search for a particular video, I can get to it that way, but the actual folder no longer appears along side the others. I can also get to it if I use the menu/tab at the top and click on like rebecca/videos/ and then the "Videos" folder suddenly appears in the links menu to the left but it's still not showing up on my desktop. Why did it disappear and how can I get to show up again?
Thanks

Hello - I?ve been unable to configure sharing on my home LAN to meet the following objective:
Share folders that reside on the Vista Home PC with a Windows 7 PC. DO NOT share Vista or Windows 7 folders with the Apple PC; rather block the Apple PC from any access to Vista or Windows 7 computers/folders.
Background
My home LAN has 3 PCs on it:

Vista Home (Used by me)Windows 7 Premium (Used by wife)Apple (Used by child)
What I?ve attempted/configured on both Vista and Windows 7:

Workgroup = WORKGROUPFirewall ?printer and file sharing? - checked.Attempted to follow these instructions: Sharing Between Windows Vista and Windows 7 Computers
I was unable to turn off password protected sharing on the Vista PC ? I set it off but it always resets immediately to on?
FYI - my PC skill level is medium. Any help in reaching my ?objective? would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have few computer at home with different Windows version, there are Windows XP, Windows Vista HP 32 bit and Windows 7 HP 64 bit. I have two share folder in the desktop using Windows Vista HP 32 bit, Share A is set to Full Control for Everyone and Share B has a permission access setting, allow few persons to access only. All computer can access Share A without problem. However, there is a problem with Share B. I only allow 3 users to access this share folder, 2 of them using laptop with Windows XP Home and Professional, they can access Share B without problem, the 3rd user using laptop with Windows 7 HP 64 bit (username is Jolene) can't access Share B, it shown "You have no permission to access...". I already double check the user name and password, there are correct. I try to login to the network using Jolene in other laptop with Windows XP, it can access both Share A and B. That means the username and the permission setting are correct in the Windows Vista desktop. I removed the anti virus in Windows 7 HP laptop, disable Windows firewall, or bootup in Safe mode with network support, but still can't access Share B. I think there is some setting which I missed, hopefully someone can help me to solve it. Thank you very much.

(First post - I searched for this issue and did not find it but I apologize if I missed it.)

I've mostly got Vista configured the way I like it by now and it's treating me alright, but I have a very annoying issue that's cropped up recently - upon browsing to my home folder (I:\Users\Ian), Explorer crashes almost instantly. I've had some issues with Explorer and thumbnails before, so I initially figured there was something in there that was casuing Explorer to crash upon trying to render it, but I've cleared everything out of the directory except the folders inside of it and it still crashes - and I can view all the folders it contains just fine, so I figure it can't be anything inside of them that it's trying to render a mini-thumbnail of for a folder picture. Explorer dies just a second after I can see and even click on its contents. I can browse my directory in a save/load file dialog fine.

I can't link the installation of any particular program to the date this started happening. I have shut down every other task to see if any cause the issue but none seem to.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Answer:Vista crash on browsing to home folder

I have the exact same problem, and I also have no idea where it came from. Turning off thumbnails works for me, or you can change the folder's view settings to small icons, list, or details. All other view settings will make thumbnails which will cause it to crash. I also tried using Disk Cleanup to delete all of the thumbnails, but it didn't work. Vista also likes to randomly change the views for no reason, so turning off thumbnails might work better.

I have about 500 files in several related folders. I need to make a spreadsheet to keep track of testing each of them. Being lazy, I don't want to key in all the names. I once knew how to pick up the names (sort of like cut and paste) so that I coud grab all of them in a folder and drop the list in a spreadsheet.

Any suggestions?

Answer:getting a list of files in a folder

Go to start => run and type
dir /s /b > list.txt
This will create a text file (list.txt) with the names of all those files. It'll also write the complete path but if you want to remove it it's just a matter of replacing c:\xyz\ with nothing in the text file (edit => replace in notepad). You can get more options if you type dir /? in the command prompt window.

There are also freewares out there that will give you more options (perhaps even create an .xls file right away)

you have just answered your own question, you have shared the files publicly, which means that vista is reading the files as public files and deem them a security threat. Changing your connection to a private network on the vista rig should fix the problem.

52% of the most popular PC applications, including Flash and Java, are out-of-date. People are exposing their PC and their personal data to risks, as malware targets older versions of software to exploit vulnerabilities.

Most outdated programs
Gathered anonymously from 116 million Windows desktop and laptop users, Avast found the most outdated programs include:
Java (Runtime 6,7)
Flash Player (Active X)
Foxit Reader
GOM Media Player
Nitro Pro
WinZip
DivX
Adobe Shockwave Player
7-ZIP
Firefox.
Topping this list of the least updated applications is Java, with more than 24 million people running the outdated versions Java Runtime 6 and 7. And while another 26 million users are on the latest version Java 8, more than 70% haven?t installed the latest update rollout (currently update 121).

This is closely followed by Flash, where 99% of users have yet to update this control for Internet Explorer; and Foxit Reader which sees 92% of users working with an old version of the application.

Conversely, the most up-to-date applications are Google Chrome at 88%; Opera at 84%; and Skype which is 76% up-to-date across the sampled user base, which illustrates that even the programs that auto-update are not necessarily always up-to-date.

Key findings
Windows XP is not dead: Windows XP is still installed on 6% of the PCs surveyed. Around 6.5 million users from Avast?s sample base still use XP despite Microsoft discontinuing support almost three years ago. Windows 7 is by far the most co... Read more

One of the two primary reasons people infect their systems. The other reason is that they indiscriminately visit websites and download and execute stuff.

Most infections don't happen because the installed security soft failed to prevent the infection - the infection starts with the user and what they do on their system.

Hello,I have several hundreds video clips (mp4), arranged in several folders.Wanted to make a list of them, not to print, just a list in the computer. On some site I found this: To write in the address line of the browser the full path to thatfolder and Enter, the list was done, then on an empty area right-click and save as...The index was done. But when I opened the index page, the list was doubled and even tripled, A to V once, then twice and even third.Clicking on any line in the index it opened a new page and video started sometimes to play and sometimes only audio was heard, and going down the list clicking on a line, got a "File was not found".This also is with listing some folders with music (mp3).Some explanation what is / was done wrong, or any other method to make such simple list, not for printing.Answers will be appreciated.ThanksMotim

Answer:Make list of files in a folder

It's complicated a bit by the fact that the files are in "several" folders, rather than one folder.

Do you have any experience with using the command prompt?

If so, adapt the following DIR command to your situation:

dir c:\Music /b /s > c:\textfile.txt

where "Music" is the folder containing the files and C: is your hard drive. The /s in the above command should pick up all the files in the Music folder and all subfolders.

At a command prompt, navigate to the folder in question and enter the command. The list will be found in the "textfile.txt" file in the root of the C drive.

If you can't use the command prompt, you could also install the Everything search tool and tell it to find all video files with a particular extension. Then just copy the list it shows you with the mouse and paste the list into a Word or text file.

Probably other ways too.

We generate thousands of drawings for our projects. We prepare a list of drawing being sent in Excel. Is there a way that this list can be read and the related files can be drawing files are copied to a separate folder. We can not copy the original folder as such as all drawings in that folder may not be required to be sent or all text files may not be required to be sent. Thanks for your help.

Answer:copying list of files to another folder

Any good backup program should give you the option of copying individual files. If you need to generate new files each week, then you may have to copy the newly generated files to a separate folder by saving them in two places and then copy the updated folders over to the customer. When they discover the center of the universe, a lot of people will be disappointed to discover they are not it. - Bernard Bailey

When I try to rename a folder on the D: partition that used to be a Windows XP recovery partition that has some Pokemon commissions in it, I get this message.
"This folder is shared with other people
If you rename this folder, it will no longer be shared."

But the folder is not shared nor has it ever been.

What is going on? Why does Windows 7 think that it is shared?

Answer:“This folder is shared with other people” when renaming not shared folder

Hello there,

This happens because of the way the Access Control List is queried by Windows Explorer to determine if the folder is shared. Because this folder you tried to rename is a child folder of a parent folder and the two folders have a different security entries, Windows will treat as a shared folder. This causes Explorer to give you the warning that you received.

Just double check, this must be a shared folder.

Hope this helps!

I have an excel spreadsheet listing over 300 hundred pictures that I need to send to find.

I know where all these images are located, but the folder they are in has thousands of other photos.

Is there a way for me to easily find the picture on my excel list?

Answer:Copying multiple files in a list, from one folder to another...

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

What do you want to do with the picture once you find it?

It should be possible to run batch file...
...the batch file reads the Excel list*
...the batch file copies** the photos of interest
...and puts then into a temporary folder on your desktop***.

*assumes that the Excel file can be saved as text (CSV).

What type of security is that and how do I turn it off

Answer:Shared files w/ vista

Is she running a program that is shared on your computer, and that has a configuration file that is shared as well? If so, you need to give her access to that file or registry key to make it able to accept changes.

I am unable to see files on a windows 2003 server after moving files from my desktop running XP. I can see them using internet explorer but not windows explorer or runn the directory command in a Dos window. I am guessing it is a file attribute setting but not sure how to change it.

Answer:Windows Explorer unable to list files in folder

To view or to remove the Read-only or the System attributes of folders in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP

1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.

2. To view the syntax for the Attrib command, type attrib /? at the command prompt.

If you remove the Read-only or System attribute from a folder, it may appear as a ordinary folder and some customizations may be lost. For example, Windows customizes the Fonts folder and provides a special folder view that permits you to hide variations, such as bold and italic. It also permits you to change the folder's view settings in ways that are specific to fonts. If you remove the Read-only and System attributes of the Fonts folder, these customized view settings are not available. For folders that you have customized by using the Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog box, the folder icon and other other customizations may be lost when you remove the Read-only attribute.

If a program cannot save files to a folder with the Read-only attribute, such as My Documents, change the Read-only attribute to System by using the Attrib command at a command prompt.

To remove the Read-only attribute and to set the System attribute, use the following command:

attrib -r +s drive:\<path>\<foldername>

For example, to remove the Read-only attribute and to set the System attribute for the C:\Test folder, use the following command:

attrib -r +s c:\test

I would like to print out a list of names of scanned image files in a single folder, but cannot seem to find an easy way of doing this, except if I do a screen capture of the folder, but I would like to make the list into a spreadsheet or database file.

I would also like to apply this to music files later.

Tried Nero 6.3 "Print Disk Cover" but do not see a way there either. Windows help files do not appear to have any info either. Nor does highlighting all names, then trying to Copy then Paste into a wordprocessor.

This is Windows XP, if it was a Mac I would not have a problem!

I want to create a list of all files in a child folder.
There are about 300 files of various file types in the folder
- would it be possible to create such a list in cmd.exe window

If so how would I do that ?
- in the past I have dabbled with commands to release stubborn drives but that is the extent of my experience.

I think I need to CHDIR to the target folder but I dont know how to then create a complete list of files in the cmd window
- I am a little out of practice writing script to create a new TXT file with the list of files.
- Wiki - List of DOS commands looks promising so I thought cmd.exe might be easier and quicker than script

Thank you

[FONT=&quot]HI there,

PRECEDING PROBLEMS, MAYBE USEFUL, MAYBE NOT:

For the last month I've had a bewildering laundry list of problems with my computer. Firefox 37.0.1 started using superhigh CPU to open and load pages. Then Thunderbird and Avast! began to do the same when connecting to the internet for download[FONT=&quot]s/updates[/FONT]. Then my printer ditto. When printing, I can't do anything else. (It's Brother MFC 4500+, an ancient workhorse that's never given me a day's trouble.)

Then my mouse went on the fritz; swapped out to another mouse and got the same problem---the pointer freezes and restarts intermittently, then freezes altogether. I can get it working again by unplugging the USB and plugging it in again, but the fix is temporary, maybe hours, maybe seconds. Every now and then I get a Windows message in the taskbar tray tha[FONT=&quot]t "something has happened" and [/FONT]the system can't recognize my USB device.

The problems didn't happen all at once, but rather in the sequence that I've noted. I've run different antivirus and malware and rootkit scans repeatedly, but all come up clean. FWIW, I run good computer utilities every week or so, so the system is squeaky clean that way. I've been limping along.

Last week on of the users on our network opened a file called "UPS Delivery Slip" I have removed the virus from the computers but I can't figure out why I can no longer access printers/files or my own computer on the network. I can see all the computers I can access any computer but when I click my computer on the network I get "The service has not started blah blah" I uninstalled the network and the drivers I even changed the computer name and work group still nothing. When going into the network sharing center and I select share files and folders instead of ON/Off it displays the word "Custom" and I can not right click any folder and share the option has completely been removed as well as all my old shared folders. I don't know what else to do any assistance on this would be a big help.

Answer:Vista Network - Shared Files Gone

Check that all your network services are Started:

COM+ Event System (for WZC issues)
Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Server
TCP/IP Netbios helper
Wireless Zero Configuration (XP wireless configurations only)
WLAN AutoConfig (Vista wireless configurations only)
Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic (or perhaps manual).

If a service is not running, open it's properties and check the dependencies. Check each of the dependencies and see which one is preventing the service from running. Checking the event log is also a good idea here, there may be clues to what is failing.

Hi guys,

I have 2 XP desktops who share files with each other with no problems. I just bought a new Vista laptop (Home Premium) and I can't access the files on the XP pc's (it gives me an access denied message). I've read up on this all day and have yet to find a solution. Anyone know what the problem could be? I see the XP pc on my network map but when I click on it, it gives me the access denied message. Oh, and I can ping from all pc's no problem.

Thanks

I recently purchased a notebook PC which came with Vista 32bit Business installed and I am attempting to network it via WiFi to my existing network (via a router) which has two XP PRO PCs attached. The XP Pro PCs can access each others shared files and folders and have a printer also attached to one of them which they both can print to.

I have added the Vista notebook to the network (same name as the XPs workgroup name) and it can -
access the internet
access the shared files and folders on both XP PCs.

Problem is that neither XP PC can even 'see' the Vista notebook and it's shared files and folders. When I open "My Network Places" the Vista shared folders are not displayed even though I have set permissions on the Vista shared folders to 'everyone'.

I need help.

Answer:XP cannot access shared Vista files

I would start with this article:
Teach XP and Vista to play nice on networks - Computerworld

For some reason they changed he default workgroup name. XP is mshome and vista is workgroup.

I have never used wifi network but I have wired with a router. I found it easiest to try accessing the already shared folder c:\Users\Public. It's equivalent to All Users on XP and should already be marked as shared.

Once I got that to work, then I could share a folder and add a printer on the Vista machine to the network. First just go with the Vista Public folder and see if you can make the Vista machine visible from XP. That's most of the battle. Once you get that far try adding a printer. For some reason it will never work right unless you get the network to see the Vista machine's already shared stuff, then share other folders as you wish. Seems like if you set the folders shared first, it's just a nightmare.
edit: it's been awhile since I struggled to get this set up but I seem to remember in the sharing settings in Control Panel for the Vista machine, if you tell it that it's on a Private Network then you can set up to share without using passwords.

I have read some other posts on this forum regarding vista xp networking with the problem I have, the trouble shooting usually cures everyones problem before mine.

Here is what I have.
Desktop xp home sp3 hard wired to router.{printer to usb}
Vista laptop home premium sp1 using wireless connection.
2nd Vista laptop home premium sp1 using wireless connection.

setting are:
vista and xp machines have the same workgroup names
each pc name is differant
network is set to private
no third party firewalls.
network discovery on
file sharing on {on connection properties too.}

Ok.The vista machines can access the xp desktop and they can also access each other with no problems.

Now at the xp desktop I cannot access either vista machine.
I can open cmd and ping either vista machine by ip or by name.
I can ping the xp desktop from either vista machine.

At the xp desktop using explorer adress bar typing in Vista ips or computer name does not gain acess to Vista public folder.

Using run provides the same results with the error ...network path not found.

Attempted remedies are as follows windows firewall off,on, etc.am now at default settings again.

All services on xp and vista machines at default.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,I have spent numerous hours trying to beat this only to be where I started out at.

Again requiring some help and direction. I was given a list of songs titles with their performers and asked if I could come up with something which could remove any duplicates from the list and hive off another list which would show all cases where the same song was sung by a number of different performers. Mistakenly, I thought this would be relatively straightforward but I have ended up more than a little confused.

I thought I would eliminate the duplicates by reading the data into an array, exporting it to the "dictionary" and then writing it back. That seems to have worked OK. I then read the data (title and performer) into an array and ran a Title match. This should have resulted in a "match" against each entry in the New_Array.txt file, and it did, except that it kept omitting one of the titles from the output file ie the differences.txt output file should have had 12 entries but only ever produced 11 and nothing I did made any difference (it omitted Rivers of Babylon if processed in the same order as I did). What I was trying to do was to modify this "match" in some way so that the code identified only those cases where
the same song was sung by different performers and wrote these to the differences file.

The list is way too long to incude so here is a "sample" of the type of entries and the code

Some days my Windows 7 PC will connect to my Vista PC with no problems but some days it will ask for a password and will not connect with any of the user/password combinations I give it. The printer is connected to the Vista PC so when this problem happens I am not able to print from the Windows 7 PC!

Answer:Windows 7 sometimes asking for a passward to access shared files on my Vista PC

The only username and password combination needed is one that matches what's being used on the vista PC. What can be easier is to create an account on the vista pc that has the exact same username and password as you use on your windows 7 pc. Also when you connect make sure you use the check box to remember credentials and that should avoid that from happening.

We have a server that has XP pro on it and a laptop with Vista.
The vista computer used to connect to the XP server with out any problems.
there is a matching user account on both computers with passwords that match.
we had to replace the wireless router recently and since then the laptop will not connect any more.
the rest of the computers in the network all connect and have the same workgroup as the vista machine.
the vista machine will connect to the music server shared folders no passwords and to the ftp server shared folders no passwords.
the vista computer goes out of town alot and gets connected to hotel networks all accross the country.
the vista machine can print to a networked copy machine a networked printer and the internet.
All of the computers show up in the network screen in the vista computer, and in the xp computers.
when we try to open the shared folder or the server we get a login window asking for user and password. when we enter the correct user and password is says that it can not connect.

Answer:vista wont connect to shared files on xp server

If you have not done so thus far, I would suggest enabling the "guest" account on the "XP Server". This should allow the Vista box to connect to whatever is shared on your XP box.

Hope this helps,

Answer:XP/Vista - How to password protect shared files/directories?

As far as I know, with XP, password protecting shared files is basically not possible. I can't tell you how many countless hours I spent on Google and on other forums trying to find how to password protect XP shares, and unless I managed to completely overlook it, I didn't find anything. With Vista, however, it is possible.

You're talking about just regular file/folder sharing correct? If so I'll assume you already have the files shared that you need.

All you have to do is go to Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center, and under the Sharing and Discovery heading simply turn on password protected sharing. This will make it so every time you connect to this computer, you will be asked for your username and password.

Hope this helps!

A recent TV guide update appears to have resulted in a loss of all channels from 32 to 71. I have COMCAST (Portland, OR) and for over 1.5 years my guide updates have always shown Ch's 1 - 71. For the last 48 hours the upper channels are not even listed. My TV can still access those channels, so they haven't been dropped. I've rebooted & downloaded the most recent guide. I've re-ran TV Setup & elected "No Guide" then rebooted & tried again, electing to use the guide, but still same results. I've been searching/reading 100's post trying to get an idea why this is suddenly happening and how to resolve. So, the guide is downloading & displaying channels, but not channels 32-71. Oh, I can manually add and access the missing channels, which will work in a pinch, but of course the channel lineup shows "no data available." Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Answer:Media Center Guide Only Downloading Partial List of Channels

I have a similar problem in the UK. All was working fine until a few weeks ago, then suddenly all RADIO stations EXCEPT BBC Radio 2 and 3 (and Kiss FM) now show 'No data available'! I've tried resetting etc to no avail, and the stations are available to hear (and appear in the guide - missing the program data). [TV stations are fine.]
Is this a temporary glitch - or a dispute between the guide provider (I've no idea who that is!) and the listings owners?

Does anybody know of a package for Browsing Files & Folders in Vista Home Premium that is as easy to use as Windows Explorer.
I had Windows Explorer & used it frequently but it disappeared after a hard disc re=format.

Answer:Browsing Files in Vista Home Premium

If you open task manager (right click the taskbar and select is one way) then scroll down under the process tab and find windows explorer, or it might be explorer.exe on your Vista, right click and select 'open file location'. Scroll down in the file that's opened, find explorer.exe, right click and select 'send to'. Select Desktop (shortcut). That should give you easy access to explorer. You could then pin to taskbar. I'm on windows 8 but shure the paths are similar in Vista.

I recently built a basic HTPC vista machine, and for some reason, when I try to share the folders on Vista, the XP machine cannot get access to it.

On the XP machine when I go to "network neighborhood" it sees the Vista machine. The same for Vista when I do the same thing, it can see the XP machine.

Everytime I try to click on either machine to access the "shared" folder, it kicks back access denied and that the admin has to grant access.

I currently have ESET smart security installed on both systems. I have Windows firewall turned on on both systems too. I tried to turn off Windows firewall and disabled the ESET firewall + anti-virus and still not letting me through with the XP machine and vice versa.

I know it has to do with either a firewall issue or permissions, but I can't figure out what exactly I need to do.

I have a shared folder on both XP and Vista machines. A bit off topic but I also have another XP machine and both XP machines can see each other and also access shared folders.

Before I installed the ESET, the XP machine was able to get access to the files, and I guess after I installed ESET is when I started to get the access denied.

I can ping the vista machine and I can also remote in using remote assistance.

Any ideas or suggestions?

"\\COMPUTERNAME is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer"

I tried to create a username on my desktop that is the same as the username for my laptop but that didn't do anything.

I've seen in other forums to select the folder I want to share and change the settings on the security tab. When I go into the folder properties I only see "General" "Sharing" and "Customize"

On the sharing tab I have "Share this folder on the network" clicked and a share name selected.

Anyone have any idea what else I need to do in order to view these folders??

Whether I'm on an internet browser, or some application that you open up files on, that program will usually just completely freeze on me

Some times it works fine and stuff, but it just freezes so much I'm getting frustrated

Here's an example :

internet browser :

I'll be on tinypic to upload a picture real fast, so I click browse. When that little window to search for the file comes up, that window immediately freezes as well as the browser. I have to force close the browser.

a program :

I use this program to trim MP3's to make ringtones and stuff. When i click 'open' the same window to get the file pops up, then bam, same thing, it just froze, then I have to force close the program.

Please oh please, help ?

I have a Visual Basic 6 app that reads files from a shared network folder and then processes them.  It was installed on two Windows XP computers many years ago.  Now we want to upgrade it to Windows 7.  I have two different computers with
Windows 7.  When I connect the Windows 7 computers to the network and run the app (which has a File Watcher window) and am watching all 4 computers, I noticed that the File Watcher window of the XP boxes show the files about 2 seconds before the Windows
7 boxes see the files.  What would cause this?  Everything else in the app works as it should.
The apps are running as Administrator on the Windows 7 boxes and XP compatiblility mode.  I have tried it both ways.

I have my Public Desktop folder set to share for everyone, so it can be accessed from other pc's on the home network. But when I move a file from my user desktop to the public desktop it suddenly adds the lock icon over it and can't be accessed from another pc, even though the public desktop still can. I have to change the permissions on the file every time, although this never used to be the case. I used to be able to move a file to the public desktop without having to manually "share" it each time.

All settings look correct: Sharing is enabled for the folder and set for full control "everyone", and public folder sharing is turned on.

Again, this just started and was working fine before. Would one of the recent security patches have changed something?

Answer:Files moved to shared public folder "locked"

I'm not sure how this could occur but in order for the Public folders to be shared you need to enable sharing through the Sharing tab of the main Public folder, otherwise anything placed in one of it's subfolders won't be sharable.

If the share is being moved from a folder with a lock then moving that folder to a Public folder won't remove the lock.

The main Public folder is located at the C:\Users\Public and should appear like the picture.
