Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer Stops even in Safe Mode

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have uploaded URL for my system specification page. In case this fails, my machine is an Acer Aspire 5633WLMi, 160 GB hard Drive (55 GB free), 2 GB RAM, loaded with OEM pre-installed Vista Home Premium (updated by now to SP2). System is 3.5 years old.

Early in its operating life the problem started and persists to this day - even in Safe Mode.

When I attempt to save a Window-created file (created using notepad, wordpad or other Windows program) to my hard drive or external flash drive, explorer crashes within 2 secs of clicking on
HTML Code:
in the file tree in the left hand pane of the explorer window. Peculiarly the program does not crash with the same invariable consistency if I click on the

expand directory

symbol to the left of the computer icon.

I am at a loss and would very much like NOT to have to re-install Vista.

Can anyone help ?

I am using Windows XP home edition with SP3. It was working normally. I used to get a popup "Windows cannot find "syssetup.exe"....When i opened yesterday morning I found it taking longer and never go to the desktop after giving the username and password. It stops at Welcome screen with a msg "Loading your personal settings" and no more response. I followed below steps to trouble shoot the issue.

1.I have tried opening in both "safemode" and "safemode with networking", found its working fine. I ran "msconfig" in safemode and unchecked some unwanted applications(nothing related to windows process) and tried again opening in normal mode.... Not worked

2. My internet works normally in safemode. Found some virus by running antivirus in safemode and cleared all the viruses.

It would be really appreciable if any one could solve my issue..

Hi guys,

Tried a few fixes online but they all fail.

I can't run sfc because I just can't run CMD in administrator mode from right clicking. Before I have the chance to do that, explorer crashes. To use a program i need to kill explorer from task manager and even then my desktop just won't load.

This happens in safe mode too. I have MSE and it scanned and there was no virus found.

Really and truly I just want to dump some files from my HDD and I would do a full clean installation but I don't have access to another computer so I can't unplug my HDD and retrieve the files that way.

Any ideas.

thanks in advance

Answer:explorer.exe Loops Windows 7 Safe Mode

To backup files, read here: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

If you do not have a Windows 7 installation DVD, you can download a legal copy with SP1 integrated from here:

Windows 7 Direct Download Links

Make sure you get the same version you have, Home Premium, Pro or Ultimate and 32 or 64 bit. Note that Basic or Starter is not available.

I recommend using ImgBurn at 4X speed (or the slowest available) to create the DVD from the downloaded .iso file.

You can do this on any computer capable of burning a DVD.

YOU MUST HAVE A VALID KEY TO INSTALL THIS .ISO. The one on the COA sticker on your computer will work.

You can also create a bootable USB Flash drive (4GB or larger) to install Windows 7 from.
Download and run Universal USB Installer – Easy as 1 2 3
Select Windows 7 from the first drop down list, all the way to the bottom
Select the downloaded Windows 7 iso file
Select your USB flash drive
Click Create

For techies or folks who work on computers: Create Windows 7 Universal ISO With All Editions Selection On Install with ei.cfg Removal Utility.
This will fit on a 6GB flash drive or can be burned to a DVD.

I took my daughter's 10 year old compaq persario 2100 with a failing HDD and I am making into a chart plotter for my boat. I replaced the HDD with a new one and Installed XP Pro SP3. I downloaded Open C, a free GPS positioning and chart reader, an anti-virus, adobe reader (to read the manual) Foobar 2000 to play some tunes and some raster charts from NOAA. That is all that is on the HDD. I bought a hockey puke GPS receiver that plugs into the UBS. Two weeks ago I had the laptop on and was working and the chart plotter was doing everything as planned. Answer:Safe Mode Stops on Ci.dll - Won't Boot

Do you have your original Windows CD? Boot from the CD if you do and when you get to the screen that asks if you want install or repair your system, select REPAIR. It should open a command prompt window. If it asks you for the Administrator password, just press Enter because it won't have one unless you set it upon installation of the OS.

Once that window opens, type CHKDSK C: /F /R and let it run. Once it's complete you can type EXIT and try and boot again.

Let me know how that works for you.

Good day!

Currently i'm scanning with MSE on safe mode but from time to time the windows explorer crashes but the MSE scan isn't crashing and still proceeding in the scanning process.

I've tried sfc /scannow but it stucks at 44%

Right now i'm waiting for MSE to finish if its the cause is a virus/malware.

Any suggestion if it isn't a virus/malware?

I need help!

I haven't tried CHKDSK and System Restore yet cuz i can't even right click My Computer cuz of the WINDOWS EXPLORER crashing.

Note: A simple click on the start button or my computer crashes/restarts the Windows Explorer.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
If you are Safe mode then the real time scanning of MSE is disabled so you are in danger of further attack. I would run MS Offline Defender from here if I were you.

My computer boots up perfectly but windows explorer started crashing on normal mode after a few seconds after start up. So I tried switching to safe mode and it works for a bit longer there and I can open atleast 1 new window but then crashes again. And it stays frozen for a really long time, I have to force a restart with the power button each time. My computer was working perfectly till an hour ago until it randomly bluescreened and then this happened when it started back up again. I went on safe mode with command prompts and run a system scan. It said that a few corrupt files were found but some were not repaired. When I try to open the CBS log with findstr it tells me that it's unable to open the file. I can't afford to reinstall the entire OS Because I haven't backed up my files for a few days now and recently created a file that I absolutely cannot afford to lose. Windows explorer won't respond long enough for me to try copying it to an external hard disk. Sorry for any grammatical errors, English is not my first language. I just need a way to be able to salvage that file and I'm not techsavvy at all so it's a big problem for me right now.

Answer:Windows explorer crashing on normal and safe mode

Hi, boot to safe mode and under advanced boot settings select "repair your computer" the RE will open, select your language, then the OS to repair (windows) then from the options select command prompt, at the x :sources> prompt type:- (cmd's are in red)

bcdedit | find "osdevice" (Must inc&#8221 (press enter, the | is called a pipe and it is the character above \ on your keyboard)

Now use the returned as the drive letter for your OS, lets assume C: (if not change the c: in these cmds to what the bcdedit cmd returns)

At the x sources type:- chkdsk c:/f (press enter), 3 stages of chkdsk will run.
can take awhile.

Next run sfc/scannow
at the x: sources type:-
sfc/scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows (press enter)
sfc will run can take awhile

Restart your computer.

Let us know how you get on.

Hello all,

My wife's laptop (which is running Windows XP service pack 2) recently got hit with super anti virus pro. I ran malware bytes on the computer and on restart the computer would hang on a black screen with the cursor. I restarted in safe mode and was able to get back into normal mode after I used msconfig to disable all the programs that were running on startup. After re-starting I was able to log in, in normal mode. I also used msconfig and changed the startup selection to diagnostic startup.

Now windows explorer wasn't running, so I restarted in safe mode. Windows explorer won't run now in safe mode either. I restarted one last time in safe mode with command prompt. The command prompt works and when I tried to use that to run explorer.exe it came up for a second under windows task manager and immediately closed. I'm pretty much at a loss of what to do now.

Answer:Windows Explorer neither loads in regular or safe mode

<<I also used msconfig and changed the startup selection to diagnostic startup.>>Did you ever take the system out of diagnostic startup mode, using MSCONFIG?

Hey everyone. Recently my computer crashed and when I was trying to start it up again on Safe Mode to fix it, it just hangs on crcdisk.sys. When I try to load it "normally" it justs stops at the loading bar and doesn't load from there. I heard the only way to fix this is to just re-install Vista again. Now before I do this, I'm using a partition to back-up my hard drive onto another external hard drive as I don't want it to wipe out while I re-install Vista. I was wondering if there was any way I could re-install Vista without the cd? I was also wondering what re-isntalling Vista meant because I know there is a difference between setting your computer to factory settings and just re-installing Vista. I have a Sony Vaio NR430e running on a 32-bit system. Thanks!

What does BSOD say?If you have Windows CD...(if you don't have Windows CD, scroll down)1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD and assure that your CD-ROM drive is capable of booting the CD.2. Once you have booted from CD, do NOT select the option that states: Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) tool. You?re going to proceed until you see the following screen, at which point you will press the ?R? key to enter the recovery console:3. After you have selected the appropriate option from step two, you will be prompted to select a valid Windows installation (typically number 1). Select the installation number, and hit Enter. If there is an administrator password for the administrator account, enter it and hit Enter (if asked for the password, and you don't know it, you're out of luck). You will be greeted with this screen, which indicates a recovery console at the ready:4. There are eight commands you must enter in sequence to repair your problem.. NOTE. I start my computer in safe mode, and it always stops/hangs on ispnp.sys. I connected the hard drive to my other computer, and replaced that file, and also the one that comes after it, pciide.sys, (the modified date and time matched the date of the old sys), and it still hangs on ispnp.sys. I have some pictures and other things I do not want to lose. When I copied the 2 sys files, I used a connector cable, and I also tried to copy all my pictures and everything but it will not let me access my Documents and desktop because I had a password on the old computer; maybe some of you know how to bypass that? My HP Pavilion DV6516TX Notebook has 32 bit Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2 installed. Lately i have noticed two (i think mutually related) issues in my system with details as mentioned below: These two issues occur only in Safe Mode and surprisingly not at all in normal boot mode. 1. If i right click on 'My Computer' (to open it in 'explore mode') in Safe Mode the system hangs. 2. If however i double click 'My Computer' in Safe Mode, Windows Explorer then opens in 'open' mode. In the Windows Explorer window that opens, if i right click on any folder or file again the system hangs. If however instead of this i left click on a folder or file in the window and then click the 'File' Menu on top, surprisingly the right click Options all become visible. Strange isn't it? I request anyone who possibly can to please come forward and help me resolve these issues. Thanks in advance.

I'm having a problem with Windows Explorer constantly crashing regardless of whether I start in normal mode or safe mode. I don't even get a chance to do anything in either mode, as in 5 seconds Windows Explorer will crash and if I try to run a program it will crash and the Show Details window shows Problem Event Name: APPCRASH and Application Name: Explorer.exe. I suppose this might not be detailed enough but I just can't stay on long enough to do anything. Also, the screen in Safe mode flickers alot in addition to the crashing. I also did defrag the drive yesterday which took ten hours. I had my hard drive for about 3 years, could it be dying? I don't think I have a virus since I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 and did a scan a while ago. Also, I'm running Vista x64 Home Premium.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I also moved my video card to a different PCIe slot a couple days ago so it wouldn't be adjacent to the sound card.

So then i try a different safemode. same problem.

Hey guys. I am just stumped with this one. I was having issues a long while ago, where seemingly randomly, my computer would stall, continuously trying to load Windows Explorer or some other program. If I was watching a movie or using some other program, that program would run just fine until the end, but then would freeze, and become unresponsive. I have had some trouble with my graphics card when it isn't updated to its newest release, however this doesn't seem to be the case now.

I'm not sure if I am having a driver issue, hardware issue or something else. However now, I am not able to boot normally. It will either hang at the Windows starting screen, or most often will load all of my startup programs and the like, appear to be fine for about 15 seconds (I can use some programs, and sometimes navigate with explorer) but then will eventually hang, and say that windows explorer has become unresponsive. Cursor still moves, yet nothing will launch, including system processes, or cancelling any programs.

Here is a grab during safe mode. Hopefully this will shed some light. I am sure that I need a good overhaul of a few things, however do not know where to begin.

Answer:Windows Explorer hangs after login, works in safe mode.

Does it blue screen at all?
Because freezing issues are extremely difficult to solve, I have had personal experiences with them and they are incredibly frustrating. This is because freezing generally doesn't say why Windows crashed. There's little indication as to what caused it. If you don't get any blue screens then I would like you to do in safe mode because you said windows will not boot normally.

You need to set windows to create dump files. Please follow these instructions, also whilst following these instructions you will see a tick box that says "automatically restart" untick that.

Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD

Then I recommend you to enable driver verifier which will force a BSOD when it detects a bad driver.
Follow these instructions on how to enable driver verifier.

Ok I will list the problems in order that they occured...

-Went to a site, suddenly I get the infamous fake spyware icon (the blue shield) and it says I have all these viruses and starts scanning

-I try to open up AVG and it's locked. I try MBAM and it's locked. Thankfully super antispyware works. and finds 4 of the trojan dropper and gen combo

- I delete and restart my computer in safe mode when I GET A BIG BLUE screen telling me that there was a problem (something like hardware problem or changes). This has never happened to me! I usually run safe mode and run my scans and boom my problem is solved but somehow it seems to be blocked!

-On the bright side my computer WILL load in regular mode but I seem to have the yahoo redirect problem. I ran trend micro, AVG, MBAM, and super antispywar and they dectect NOTHING. Please help! I'm really out of ideas on what to do. I ran a combo fix but it didn't take long and really had nothing in the log that stood out. If I need to post a hijack log I will gladly but I'll have to get back to the infected computer.

Please help! Thanks! I hope I don't have to reformat!

Kept getting BSODs that seemed to indicate malfunctioning ATI (onboard) video driver, tried everything I could think of to update/straighten that out to no avail. So I installed a 3rd party card. Everything seemed fine for a few days, but then got a stop 024. Perfmon showed everything was good (only thing of any note was that Kaspersky A/V wasn't recognized).
I also have been getting this strange little Warning box at the upper L corner of the screen whenever I reboot. It's empty and only shows whatever was on the desktop at the time it loaded. My attempt at attaching a screenshot of it failed, but someone here hopefully knows what I'm talking about.

I picked up a trojan at a web site (an Amazon vendor, no less...). McAfee blocked it from completing whatever it does, but not before several changes were made to my XP Home system. The file McAfee detected was 9129837.exe. Web searches at Symantec and McAfee say it is low risk for home users, but the Trojan descriptions on their sites do not fully describe what it is currently doing. Using resources from various sites, I think I removed all active content, but am left with settings made by the trojan in its attempt to thwart removal. One change made that I have not figured out yet is how they are able to prevent Safe Mode from running. The computer boots normally otherwise, but any Safe Mode option hangs. The trojan also made it so that exe files will not run from the command prompt, from double clicks, and right-click Open. I got regedit.exe to run by copying it and saving as Running IE7 and other applications from shortcuts still work. One possible cause I found posted as a reason for the exe problem (changing HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/.EXE) does not appear to be the problem because the registry entry there is the same as I see on other XP computers.I am still looking for the Restore disk for this machine (an eMachine a few years old), so suggestions that don't require that CD are appreciated.Any ideas?

windows unexpectedly restarted and now keeps restarting. I've read some articles here and understand it keeps restarting because of an error and that it may be easy cd creator causing the problem wich i did somewhat recently get. one article also tells how to disable the restart feature if the drive is in a bootable state, but my problem i keep restarting. i never finish booting up. when i try last succesful restart it seems to continue as a normally start up scandiscruns windows logo then bam restart. when i try system restore say preparing system restore feature then scandisc starts finishes then nothing ever happens. when i try safe mode a list of drivers star about a page and a half then stops responding. what do i do im stuck and frustrated. please help!

Answer:keeps restarting and stops responding when trying safe mode and restore features

i ran into a problem that sounds similar to what you're seeing. i believe the problem was the result of a bad sector on the hard drive. if you have the same problem you'll need to run scandisk or some other utility capable of doing a surface scan and handling bad sectors. unfortunately, the system restore scandisk doesn't seem robust (it didn't work for me, don't remember if it hung or crashed).

ideas for repairing this sort of problem:
- stick the drive into another machine and run scandisk from there
- use a third party utility, such as norton utilities (but note that many utilities, including norton, may not support ntfs, so if you're using ntfs, read the fine print very carefully before purchasing any software). you'll want a utility that provides a bootable cd so that you can avoid using the hard drive for booting.

hope this helps...

My daughters computer is a Windows XP (as is mine) - she first could not go anywhere or click anything without an error window popping up. Each error window was different. She couldn't even get into the screen to choose system restore, recovery would go to the same day or day before only. She finally got into safe mode and started a system restore which froze at 37% at a file that she is sure is the problem. Then it went to black screen. We are sure it's a virus (at least I am) but we can't get into her programs to run anything. Can you help me??? I am computer stupid, so give me kindergarten instructions, please. My Bad, I have just been informed that it did not go to black screen, she just turned it off - now a file is missing or corrupt.

I opened msconfig and after clicking on the Services tab --> hide all Micorsoft services --> disable all and then clicked on 'apply' System Configuration Stopped responding [and I could not even restart my PC]. I did so manually. I tried again this time instead of selecting 'Disable all'' I just disabled one of them (Adobe update service) to see if I could do this one at a time. but still it stopped responding and froze everything.
Having no choice I rebooted manually and then pressed the F8 key to reboot in safe mode BUT I got a boot menu asking me which HD I wanted to use to boot into and not the DOS screen giving me a choice for safe mode.
BTW my Win 7 OS HP 64bit is now booting from an SSD drive on a PCI-e card and am wondering if this has anything to do with it.
Anyhow, having done my usual monthly virus scan as well as malaware by using 3 different sources (mine and 2 online ones) just yesterday this virus/trojan/malware is probably not the cause.
Why do I want msconfig or a safe mode boot. Trying to reinstall my HP scanner software and drivers which I am having a little bit of problems with--so not related.

Answer:urgent; Can't boot in safe mode and msconfig stops responding

Not knowing what was in startup originally, it's hard to say what you deleted but I'm guessing it had to do with a driver for your PCI-e SSD. If that's the drive you boot from, the startup boot is saying it's not there. What's the BIOS say for the order of boot devices? What other drives are installed?

I'm at my wits end here. I'm infected with at least Virtuomonde and Smitfraud. Here is what's happening.

All antivirus and HJT that I've tried (spybot, HJT, Avast, etc) start to run and then die. When I try to restart I get a dialog box that says, cannot access, file, drive, path--you may have insufficient rights.

clicking on browser links redirects to a random page.

booting in safe mode gives me a quick BSD and then starts over

Active desktop has died--I deleted an html "warning" image from the recovery console on a Win XP CD.

Can ANYBODY help or am I doomed to reformatting?

Currently running Win XP Home Edition--SP-3

Thanks so much!

I have not done scratch installs for a while now but was trying to revive an HD with problems. A Safe mode boot shows the trace of operations performed by the operating system. This trace stops at 'Drivers'
and hangs. If not in Safe mode an unrequested 'hard reset' takes place.

On the Win7 Windows Repair Environment it shows an option for drivers install. Is this simply the
motherboard drivers disk or is the Installation disk the source of the drivers files to refresh them?

From others I recall that finding drivers on an install disk where it goes and looks for them can be an endless task. Please provide any needed instructions to get through it.

Please do not post your Hijack this logs here. Due to Forum Rules we cannot assist in malware removal here. Have you tried a different browser (Chrome, Firefox etc)? When you say IE only works in Safe Mode with Networking, Do you mean you boot the computer normally and use IE (safe mode) or are you booting the computer into Safe Mode with Networking? In other words you can't boot normally?

Hi there, I'm trying to fix my Aunt's windows XP computer. I downloaded MBAM as she had previously mentioned getting a call on the phone from someone in India telling her she needed to pay $160 for her antivirus or her computer would shut down.

I ran MBAM and it took about 8 hours to scan, and at the very end found a bunch of results. I told it to get rid of them, and then restarted. Upon restarting, it also ran a disk check, and after that finished, it booted up but took forever to load. Upon loading the taskbar showed up for a brief moment, then disappeared, and I can't seem to get it to run from the task manager either. It brings up the explorer.exe process briefly, then without ever loading the taskbar, it ends the process.

I got a bit worried at this point and tried to restart in safe mode. However, when I do that, it loads a bunch of drivers and then stops. It never finishes loading. (this happens in safe mode with and without networking)

I also tried restarting back into normal mode and running avast through command prompts, but it doesn't do anything and I also got errors stating that a particular file is missing.

What should I do next? I was going to attempt running combofix from my flash drive, but when I try to CD into the drive, it says the drive isn't ready. If you have any suggestions on what to do, let me know, thanks.

Answer:Unable to boot in safe mode, explorer.exe not loading in normal mode

Last night, out of nowhere, I noticed that every 15 seconds or so the computer would seem to freeze and then unfreeze after about 5 seconds or so. The computer has never done this before. I decided to restart, and this is when things started getting bad. After restarting, the computer seemed to boot up fine, but when I clicked on firefox, it seemed to lock up completely. The taskbar didn't seem to be affected, so I clicked start. The frame of the start window opened, but everything inside was white, and that too appeared frozen. I hit ctrl-alt-del, and nothing happened, the computer stayed locked.

I turned the computer off manually and tried restarting in safe mode. The computer started to boot until it reached a specific process (I don't remember which). It was stuck on that process for about 15 minutes, and then it just turned itself off.

I turned the computer back on again and let it boot fully while I took a shower, so it had about 30 minutes to fully boot. I come back and everything seems to be working, icons are highlighting as I hovered over them, the start menu worked, right-click menu's appeared, etc. I opened up a folder with some movies on my desktop. It loaded fine. I click a movie, and it begins playing, but then all of the sudden the whole thing freezes, and I can't open anything in the background. I hit ctrl-alt-del, and this time it actually worked. I chose task manager, and although it took 5 minutes to actually appear, I was happy to ... Read more

Good Evening,

I need help please. My home PC was attacked by the vundo virus over the weekend. With the help of someone at, it was deemed cleaned.

McAfee ran this morning on schedule. When I left it was at 90% with nothing detected. I returned after 3 hours, opened webmail to dump unwanted mail and clear spam folder. I exited webmail and attempted to open MS Outlook. McAfee asked if I wanted to allow a change to registry for Outlook and I responded to block change. I At the same time, I got error message that I did not have permission to open the application. That didn't seem right so I decided to run Malawarebytes(trying to run it at least once a day). McAfee asked if I wanted to allow Malawarebytes to run and I allowed it. While running Malawarebytes, McAfee displahyed that it had discovered and quarantined Artemis "something". Malawarebytes finished runnning but reported no detections.

I attempted to open Outlook again and received the same error message. I then restarted the computer using Start/Shutdown/Restart. Just as the system shutdown, I heard the Windows error sound again. When the system restarted, there was a black screen and the cursor. I then attempted to start in Safe Mode and now have safe mode with the black screen. I have tried Safe Mode in Command Line, Safe Mode with Last Known Good Configuration. None of these worked. I think this was virus related and now I can't get windows to boot at all.

With Windows 10 installed when I login I end up with a black screen (except for the applications that load during startup). All the searches I have done for this problem always bring up other black screen problems that don't appear to match the one I have.

1. I can ctrl-alt-del to start the task manager and run anything I like successfully from there except explorer which shuts itself down again immediately.

2. I can start up in safe mode and choose between having the screen display everything correctly using the correct display driver but without networking or I can get networking but with everything on the screen stretched out of shape.

3. With all the startup programs and services disabled I still get the same black screen with explorer refusing to start so it isn't any of those causing the conflict.

I am out of ideas for what to try next. I even started over again (it looked like Win10 got stuck in a rebooting loop when I tried to restore back to Win 7, I gave up after about the tenth or so reboot and deleted the partition from the drive), recopying windows 7 and then upgrading to Windows 10 over again only to end up with the exact same result. This second attempt was over a month after the first attempt so there were quite a few updates to Windows 7 that I installed in between the two tries.

Answer:explorer.exe will not run other than in safe mode

Hi, I had a similar experience when I first installed Win 10 as an upgrade from 8.1. In my case, there was a conflicting program installed- Aeroglass. Since you're upgrading from '7 you won't have that particular program!

So you could try to think or research if there is a program you have installed in '7 that is causing a problem (I've seen only a very few mentioned).

I also experienced the stretched screen display on my second (successful) upgrade (having uninstalled Aeroglass first), but in normal mode. That was for about 5 hours, during which I noticed I had a basic MS graphics driver installed. Fortunately the Nvidia driver was installed automatically by the time I started looking at this, and the problem was solved.

In order to make this easy -sorry - easier! - make sure you take disk images at key points (so you can revert to that same state easily). Use e.g. Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backupper...etc and remember to create the boot disk. So, for example, image your Windows 7 before attempting the upgrade.

Turning now to the automatic repair loop- which I experience any time my laptop has a thermal shutdown- the only way I've found to escape is pretty horrible. Power down you PC. Power it up, and after a second or so, suddenly switch it off, disconnect it. Yes, I know, horrible. Wait, press the power button. Reconnect, power up (=cold boot) and hopefully your boot sequence will be normal.

Ok Guys so I have no desktop even in safe mode.

Everytime I try to run an anti virus or malware program it works for a few seconds then dissapears. Upon trying to run the program again I get an error that I may not have permissions.

Here is what I did while trying to go through the read & run me first guide.

Uninstalling Multiple Protection Applications - There is no start menu so no control panel and no add/remove programs option. I don't believe there are multiple protection apps installed anyway.

House Cleaning - Again I can't get access to add/remove programs. I cannot empty the recycle bin. I ran ccleaner with no issues on the main account, guest account and on the admin account.

Config & setup - enable viewing of hidden files/extensions failed as i cannot access explorer. Msconfig is set to normal mode and i guess it always has been. Was unclear on if thats how it should be afterwards or not.

Unistall known malware/unwanted softeare - skipped no explorer.

Windows xp procedures - SuperAntiSpyware ran fine. Found and cleaned a few items. Installed and ran mb, upon starting the scan the program disapeared. Ran combofix initially it said it detected rootkit and restarted the pc. Combo fix seemed to run fine afterwards and restarted the computer but I didn't see a log popup... RootRepeal I couldn't run because after combofix winrar wouldn't run. After that MG Tools ran fine.

i am not much more than a newbie, but i might be able to help you. safe mode has an option menu. i think you may want to choose "safe mode with networking". if you chose the first option "safe mode", the connection to the internet is disabled. some safe mode options direct you to "pages" that don't appear to have any way out. there is a flashing underscore like a command prompt, and you're supposed to type "quit", "stop" or "exit" (then hit enter) to leave. there is no red X in the upper right hand corner. i can't remember which word it is.

Help Needed!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A665 laptop, running Windows 7, 64 bit. Two weeks ago my Internet Explorer began running slowy, and then after a few days, the program would open but after about 30 seconds, would start clocking and give a Not Responding error message. 1) msconfig; Disabled add-ons - restart - problem remains
2) Malwarebytes - 0 problems were found
3) CCleaner - no help

I saw one of your posts that said to run HiJackThis ....I would really appreciate anyone who can read it and tell me what needs to be done so that my Internet Explorer will run in Normal Mode.

Answer:Internet Explorer will only run in Safe Mode

May not be the same problem, but I recently had a similar situation with my neighbor's PC. They'd been using Norton Internet Security for years. All of a sudden about a month ago they had sporadic and then no internet connection. But they had connection in safe mode. I tried everything I could find online to no avail but eventually led me to uninstall NIS using their Uninstall utility. With NIS uninstalled, everything was fine. I tried twice reinstalling NIS (after Uninstall utility) and couldn't get it to work. So, I replaced NIS with Komodo and everything's fine again including their Internet access being much faster than it had been in a long time according to them. Thought I'd mention this just in case you're using NIS or, maybe, some other AV is causing a similar problem.

I am quite a novice with computers but my pc has internet connection but I was unable to access internet explorer it just said address not valid or page could not be displayed. I was told to do a reset on internet options which I have done and nothing happened. I was then told to try and access it in safe mode. I am now in safe mode and can not get out of it! Help please how can I get back to normal mode and get my Internet Explorer page back. Kind regards,

Answer:safe mode and internet explorer

Hey, to get out of safe mode (if this is windows safe mode you're talking about) then when booting:
- Tap F8(Before the windows image and loader comes up)
- Choose "Normal..."
- Press enter.

As for the IE problem, is this on every page?

I have Lenovo laptop with i-5 processor, 8 gb ram and 1 tb HDD with win7 os. On last Monday evening (18-Nov-2013) when i tried to start my laptop, it gave me blue screen error just after the windows boot logo (before appearing of login screen), and this error lasts just for a fraction of second. And right after that it restarted and showed options of Safe Mode, normal mode etc. Then I ran the system in safe mode but it stops while loading aswrvrt.sys and again gives blue screen error. I tried repairing my os with the win7 CD and repair disc but the process stops after the windows files are loaded. Its not even able to detect the OS, it just hangs there. While trying to format and install a fresh os the same thing happened again, it gets stuck at "setup is loading...". I have tried farbar tool also but as I am not able to run the repair option I tried running in freeDos but it says that the program can't run on Dos. Please help me out with this...

Answer:Not able to boot, problem with aswrvrt.sys, safe mode stops at aswrvrt.sys

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
The following will serve two purposes, it will let us know if you can boot from a bootable disc, and it will let us know the condition of the hdd.
Please download SeaTool for DOS.
When the SeaTools for DOS website opens click on I Accept, then click on the Download button in step #4.
This download is a ISO image which you will need to burn to a CD in order to create a bootable disc with which to run the diagnostic tests.
To burn this ISO file to a CD or DVD please downlaod ImgBurn and install it.
Insert blank CD or DVD into your CD/DVD drive.
Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc.

Click on the Browse for a file icon:

Right click on the Start orb , then click on Downloads.  Scroll down to the SeaTools for DOS download and click on it.  This will load the ISO image, you will see the information listed as it is in the image below outlined in red.

Click on the blue arrow (also outlined in red) to start burning the bootable CD.
Once the disc is created load it in the CD/DVD drive and restart the computer.
Please note:  You may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so the CD/DVD-ROM is the first device in the boot order, and the hdd is the second device.
Please run the long test and include the results in your next post in this topic.

Okay, first of all I'm running Windows Vista. I recently got a virus called "System Tool" which is a fake antivirus. In normal mode it seems to block any executable file. I am working towards removing this annoyance.

So that being said, i went into safe mode with networking. I connected via Ethernet cable to laptop. It does connect locally. But, when i open up ie 7, it does not connect, it gives me the default "Diagnose connection problems" screen.

Please help me out,

Hi everyone i hope someone can help.

My computer came up with the following message this morning

windows no disk

exception processing message c0000013 parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c

when i clicked cancel the computer kept flashing!

I restarted the computer and the computer started flashing again!
When i went into task manager i noticed that the "flashing" was being caused by explorer.exe keep restarting.

I went into msconfig and selected the /safeboot option to start windows in safemode and now the computer just keeps restarting when it reaches the windows loading screen!

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks Chris

Answer:Explorer.exe keeps restarting and won't boot into safe mode

What version of Windows do you have?

If you have Windows 7 and you updated your video driver, that can be it right there. If that's the problem, then you might have to roll back your updates and go back to your former ones.

I'm starting here - you can move this thread later if necessary.

Sis-in-law called tonight in a panic, her computer has crashed. Was fine yesterday until she realized her firewall was off. She turned the firewall on, left the computer, came back some hours later and while she was using the computer Explorer (.exe not IE) vanished. She rebooted by using the task manager to shut down the computer. When she reached the desktop again, she turned off the firewall and rebooted thinking something with firewall was maybe causing a problem (being the only change to the computer in weeks). Now the computer boots, her desktop appears, then explorer craps out immediately. I tried to get her into Safe Mode and explorer fails there, too. Even when using Task Manager to execute apps, we don't have networking (despite selecting safe mode w/net). Not sure what to do here since she doesn't have anyway for me to help her get mal/spyware apps - and I can't be certain that's actually what's causing the problem...

Answer:Explorer.exe crashes, no access safe mode

She needs to find someone who can copy explorer.exe to a USB thumb drive.
She'll boot up her computer into safe mode, put in the USB drive into the computer and copy the explorer.exe into the C:\Windows folder. (It is under 1MB in size).

Okay so it all started me being on Skype and making a phone call to a company and then Skype just froze up and I had issues with it. Blabla I forced stop it with Task Manager and then like 3 minutes later I got a random Blue Screen of Death (I tried to get the logs but I just get a error so I can't provide the BSOD logs)

The tool will now begin gathering files to help diagnose your issue,

this process will take a few minutes.

DNS name does not exist.

ANYWAYS.... I restarted my PC and logged in my account and instantly greeted with a explorer.exe has stopped working, trying to find solution then it attempts to restart explorer.exe

It's constantly doing this and it won't stop. (explorer.exe crashes about every 10 seconds in safe mode and in just normal mode it crashes but it takes a few minutes for it to come back up then it just crashes right away.

What I have tried:
sfc /scannow (gives me error at 8% something about windows security resource or something like that)

Opened up laptop to see if anything is loose (also cleaned it a bit)

Virus scans.

Checked something in REGEDIT that's in Windows LogOn it's talking about shell has to be explorer.exe but i dont have anything named shell...

If anyone can help me I will appreciate it so much.

Answer:Explorer.exe constantly restarting (even in safe mode)

Can you access a restore point to roll back your computer to a date/time prior to the Skype incident?

Hi, I'm having problems with File Explorer on my laptop as it's taking up lots of processing power and is not opening some specific audio files.

[My computer is running on Windows 10 with a Core i5-6200 U Processor and 8 GB of RAM.]

Over the past day, whenever I use File Explorer it at some point (usually either immediately after opening the program or a file within the program) starts loading something in the address bar (see first picture) and then proceeds to engage around 25-45% of the computer's processing power. Sometimes 'COM Surrogate' and/or 'Shell Infrastructure Host' will also start using large amounts of processing power at the same time, (around 30% each). This continues even when I close File Explorer.

This issue persists even when the computer is in Safe Mode, although it happens less frequently and usually takes up a little less processing power.

I've run scans with both McAfee and Avast Free AntiVirus. McAfee found one issue and said that it had fixed it. Avast said it found some issues with broken entries in the Windows Registry, but nothing to do with viruses.

It might be helpful to know that the problem started when I tried to open a certain audio file which I had exported from a DAW. It was a Wave file which I exported at a 24-bit resampling rate, as opposed to the 512-bit resampling rate which I export at ordinarily, and when I tried to open it File Explorer crashed. I've tried deleting the file but whene... Read more

I have now errors when running these scans. Now if I try to startup in SAFEMODE, this is where some issues come about. Anything I try to open, explorer.exe will max out at 99-100%. Nothing opens, I can not even right click on an object. I stop the process and restart... same thing happens.the next thing i tried was starting in safe mode and scanned it with all of the above software with a DIFFERENT computer networked to it. Same thing, maxed out the explorer.exe on THIS computer. I again ended the process and it started the scan. Nothing came up at ALL.This is extremely frustrating. Another example... I should probably start by saying that all of my problems began after a trojan removal by malwarebytes. I had 2 trojans found and removed by malwarebytes and subsequently I lost my internet access through internet explorer. Internet explorer however does work in safe mode. I've been using malwarebytes for years and have never had a problem with it before, so I'm not inclinded to believe that it has caused the problem. What is strange is that my computer shows that I have full access to the internet, and this is validated because I have a remote access program that is working like a champ. Norton has access and those are the only two programs that do have access. Oh and internet explorer, turbo tax, google chrome etc all work just fine and have access in safe mode with networking. The log for the malwarebytes scan is right below the list of things I have tried. It says that all of the trojans have been removed successfully so I'd say that my computer is clean of spyware that might stop my computer from access.

ipconfig /release and reset
dns flushed
winsock and tcp/ip set back to defaults (i'm sure there's a technical term for all of this but I don't know it)

clean boot (all the services etc turned off...although for some reason I can't turn the norton service off)

Answer:Internet explorer will only run in safe mode with networking

This looks like a virus problem--at least to my tired eyes. It could be a o/s issue as well. Try downloading a different browser like FireFox or Opera or Chrome. If that doesn't work, do a great big long virus scan.

I guess keep us posted.

Running Windows XP. Cannot connect to the internet unless using Aol Explorer. I was previously able to use Firefox and Internet Explorer. Now they will open, but they don't connect to the internet. Internet Explorer attempts to connect to the homepage but fails.
I ran the computer in safe mode with networking and was able to connect to the internet using internet explorer. I'm thinking it's a firewall issue. I previously had an out of date version of Norton Antivirus, but I uninstalled that. Now I have Windows Defender and Zone Labs Integrity Desktop. I'm suspecting the zone labs is the issue because when I disabled it with msconfig I had some problems with AOL Explorer. I'm afraid to uninstall the Zone Lab entirely in case it'll kill even my Aol Explorer access, which is the only internet access I have now.
I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Answer:Cannot Access Internet Except Through Aol Explorer Unless in Safe Mode

Hi discoinfiltr8r,

When you removed Norton Antivirus, did you use the Norton Removal Tool? How did you configure Zonelabs? Do you have the security level set on high? If so, see if the two browsers are still locked out at medium.

Did you try going back to a restore point preceding this problem? This should tell you if it's related to one of the pieces of software you mentioned - Nortons and/or Zone Labs - or if it's a different problem altogether.

If you've never used System Restore, go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore
check the box to Restore my computer to an earlier time and click on Next. You'll see a calendar with highlighted dates. Choose one of the dates just preceeding these problems and allow your system to return to that date. See if the problem goes away.

After you see if restoring to an earlier point preceding the installation of Zone Labs changes things or if you still have the problem, you will have more information to work with. If Zone Labs is the problem and restoring to an earlier restore point does help, you can temporarily turn on your Windows Firewall as an option until you can figure out what the problem is with Zone Labs. It can be turned on by going to Start / Control Panel / Windows Firewall.

Two days ago, while perusing the internet, my computer froze. When I rebooted, the only thing that showed was my wallpaper. I can bring up the task manager, but that's it. I can boot into Safe Mode, however, but not the recovery console.
Things I have done to attempt to fix this:
Ending the explorer.exe process and starting it as a new task.
Not ending the process, and starting up a new task of explorer.exe.
Run a virus scan, with no positive hits.

Main programs that I use:
Windows XP with SP3.
I use Google Chrome with AdBlock, and the WOT extension.
I also use McAfee for my virus protection program.
I utilize Online Armor for my firewall.

The steps that I've taken to try to fix it have not worked, and with a (seemingly) clean virus scan, I'm concerned that it is an infection, but I do not know of what type, if any.

I'd really appreciate it if you could help me out!

I hope you can help here. My kids downloaded some malicious adware and I managed to remove all of them with Adware/Spybot/Spycatcher. However I deleted a (virtual bouncer) file from my local registry and somehow I could not open my internet browser. I am able to open it fine in safe mode but I'm not sure how to reestablish connection in normal boot mode.
I am running windows 2000.
I appreciate any advice as I think I'm going mad with frustration.....

WinXP sp3 will not boot. Black screen where Win logo should go after post. In safe mode boot, stops after 3rd item loaded.

Found on the net may be due to MS update or virus, but cannot find confirmed fix. User confirmed MS update occurred on shut down last night and that she got a virus notice before calling me. Another forum suggested chkdsk /p/r, but did not fix. Tried reseating ram and hdd data cable.

This is the 4th workstation I have had to do grave emergency work to this week. Any suggestions to get this back online would be GREATLY appreciated!

Answer:Won't boot, safe mode boot stops at kdcom

System and manufacturer?

You've checked the system manufacturer's website...for possible solutions when the system fails to boot properly?

I know that HP routinely provides such for their systems and I suspect that most do.

Hi Guys n Gals , my name is Mark , I have an old laptop I am trying to get going , it has never been online so its not a virus , and the cd rom does not work , and no USB sticks have ever been plugged in all it was used for was playing bejewelled the old one and windows games , not pad then kind of tasks . once shut down moved to new place , unpacked , it would not start up.   by this I mean ... the screen that shows up usually after a improper shut-down .... Safe mode ... Safe mode with network .....  Start windows normally ... that screen ...  no matter what selection I make it freezes there and I can no longer move or alt cntr del ... nothing works .. power button . also Its so old i cant figure out how to boot from usb as the cd rom does not work . I thought I figured it out , but it kept bringing me to the start normally ,,, safe mode ... safe mode with networking screen after 15 seconds of black screen , witch is the reason I thought it was working because generally when I boot other computers the screen goes black with the small flashing thing in the corner for a few seconds then starts booting windows , but this one brought me to that menu then froze ...
here is a pic of the menu i speak of .

Recently contracted a virus. Normally pretty handy with manual removal and self research but so far i've found nothing.
Heres whats happening:
Explorer wont load upon booting in normal or safe mode.
System restore is disabled (was enabled before virus) will only let me restore to the present once enabled.
I can ping google from cmd but cannot access any pages even from safemode
I can open task manager, msconfig, regedit.
I cannot open explorer manually
I cannot open control panel
I have read up on the explorer virus and searched through the regedit and found no duplicates or explorer files where the virus history says it might be.
When i go to open explorer or control panel manually it appears at first as if it was loading then disapears without opening
And explorer is not listed under my running apps in tm.
Sidenotes: I am running xp pro sp3 and i do not have the disk.
Any help or redirection would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, basically my Internet Explorer will keep on displaying the "Interet Explorer cannot display this webpage" error in Normal Mode. However, it works fine in Safe Mode with networking.

Does anyone have any suggestions? It's really annoying as i do not want to have to use my computer in safe mode every time i want to go on the internet!

Answer:Internet explorer only works in Safe Mode with Networking

After booting into Windows normally, temporarily disable all but 1 antivirus suite or firewall and see if you can connect.

[Note: If you're not able to connect with only 1 running, try disabling that and see if you can connect. But know that your computer is very vulnerable if you do so. Only connect to a site such as Google's home page where you know you won't be susceptible to malicious content.]

If I go into Safe Mode in Windows 8.1 64bit, I'm greeted by explorer.exe constantly looping and crashing around once per second, with a message saying that "the instruction at 0x8000eef7 referenced memory at 0x00000018. The memory could not be read."

I don't need to go into safe mode right now, so it's not an immediate problem, but should I need to do so it would be unusable.

Anyway, I've tried:
reinstalling windowsrunning a full anti-virus scan (no problems)running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (no problems)running sfc (no problems)uninstalling Start8, on a hunch that it might be responsible (it wasn't)running y-cruncher to check stability (30 passes without problems)running memtest86 (12 passes without problems)running memtest86+ (4 passes without problems)

I guess the alternative would be to replace explorer with explorer++, which hopefully wouldn't suffer the same problem; I think that would allow me to dispense with explorer entirely?

Any thoughts?

Answer:explorer.exe loop in safe mode (0x8000eef7 / 0x00000018)

Windows overwhelms me at time ,the things it can do ,sometime I wonder do i really know windows and how it works ,and what 3rd party programs can do ,ect ect ,but I'm almost 100% sure Explorer++ will not fix you troubles ,Explorer.exe runs your desktop so you can use windows ,explorer++ is only a 3rd party file manager .
if its only happening in safe mode ,then don't go to safe mode ,easy fix I think

So I got a new laptop, and Asus x3v8b-x2 with Vista Home Premium 64bit SP1 on it. It was working beautifully for almost a month, then a couple days ago I started it up and noticed that the it was taking forever to load and that my sidebar wouldn't show up. I then noticed that I couldn't click on anything, and then vista told me that explorer.exe was not responding. So I restarted it, but it just froze again, and when I tried to restart it wouldn't. So I turned it off manually, and when I turned it back on it was fine. I ran Avira antivirus free version, spybot, and ad-aware. Nothing. The next day upon starting it, the same thing went down. So I manually turned it off and left it off for the rest of the day. Today, I tried to turn it back on, and upon logging into my account (the only one), it lagged, and explorer didn't start up at all. I just got a black screen with a white mouse (I could still move my mouse) but the start button on my keyboard didn't do anything, and I couldn't get into task manager either. So I manually turned it off, started it in safe mode w/ networking, the thing lagged, and I got a black screen with the words safe mode in the corners and a white cursor. Awesome. Turned it off, turned it back on in regular mode, now it works. What? So yeah, I'm having problems, and it seems like many others are having very similar problems, but no one has any solutions, so why should my situation be any different? Well I guess I can try. I'm pretty certain that I did no... Read more

I am able to boot up my computer and select either my wife's account (no password and reduced rights) or mine (I have admin rights and a password is required). I clearly got a virus the other week that has disabled my task manager as well as removed my start menu. When I log into my account I get a blank screen. I can not right click and C+A+Del "Has be disabled by administrator".

One other 'weird' item. When I normally start my computer I get two accounts, mine and my wifes. When I start in safe mode I get one called "Administrator" and one with my name (which has administrator rights), but I do not see one with my wife's name.

When I start in safe mode I get the exact same issue when I log into my account (i.e. No task manager, no right click, no start menu). I was able to get into the account called "Administrator" and I can run C+A+Del but no start menu and no right click.

I need a way to access files on my account so that I can transfer off some very important files. Is there a way to start your computer at the comand line only and find the file that contains the data I need to get off the computer? The data is in my account (i.e. The administrator account and I know the password). I can access C+A+Del under my wife's account and I can see all her files but I can not get to mine.

I have run AVG and one other virus scanning programs while under my wife's account but it doesn't seem to help when I try and log in under ... Read more

Hi Jason,

Welcome to TSF!

This sounds a lot like the Conflicker Virus that was hyped for April 1st, 2009. Microsoft KB962007 details it's implications and removal.

If your antivirus software does not detect Conficker, you can use the Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) to clean the malware. For more information, visit the following Microsoft WEB PAGE

Any program that invokes cmd.exe crashes the explorer (task bar goes away for 3 seconds). Also regedit works for 10 seconds and then closes. The machine claims to come up in normal mode, however, when I check, not all services are running and when I try to start them, I get a message saying: "Cannot run service in Safe Mode". I also cannot run dds.scr.

Ive run the following virus software to no avail:

AVG free

Hi Forum,
Just joined today in the hope that someone here has the knowledge to assist me in a really annoying issue.
4 days ago my pc decided that explorer.exe would crash constantly after booting. The only function I can enter is Task Manager. This happens even in safe mode. This issue has effectively rendered my pc useless.
I have installed Windows on another hard drive in order to get me back online, in the hope that I can fix my original install without having to reinstall all of my software and transfer everything over.
Now I have been trying to fix this issue for a few days now and I have searched and searched for a suitable solution. To date nothing has worked.
I have replaced the following files (from the installation DVD):
Explorer.exe, ExplorerFrame.dll and shell32.dll
I have also done the following:
Deleted the explorer and iexplorer keys entirely within HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution.options
I copied explorer.exe to system32 folder
and most recently followed a thread on this forum without success.
Any guidance would really be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

Last night I started getting pop ups that I had W32.Myzor.FK and Internet Explorer kept popping up with a site regarding a program to remove it. All attempts to close the pop ups and IE just bog down the computer. I searched for a way to fix it (which I found), but it requires starting the computer in Safe mode, which I am unable to do. It starts in Safe mode, but then the screen goes to black and does nothing (even after a wait of up to 45 minutes). I am including the hijack this log in the hopes that someone can advise...Thanks!

I've got a peculiar and suspicious problem, but an expert in the Malware Removal forum found no infection on my computer (see the thread here.)

One of the symptoms I'm seeing is that the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) installer will not complete without errors in Windows XP Pro SP3 after a normal boot. After acknowledging the errors during the install routine (which are always the same, a screenshot is attached to this thread), the installer seems to finish. However, the second symptom is that MBAM then will not run due to the same pop-up error message. It's a Visual C++ Runtime Library error that says, "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." Please see the screenshot in this Malware Removal thread.

I know that normally, some malware will disallow running the normal filename for MBAM, so the first thing I tried was renaming the file to something else, including using different file extension such as .com, .bat, .scr, and .pif. None of these renaming attempts worked. This is where I started to observe really strange behavior. After uninstalling my first MBAM install attempt, I found that I could install MBAM when booted to Safe Mode (after changing the registry to allow this and starting the installer service in Safe Mode). After the install I could also run MBAM in safe mode. I then rebooted to normal mode, and MBAM sti... Read more

i tried a different graphics card, but no i replaced the hdd drive and put a fresh copy of windows xp pro edtion on,but it loads all the files(i have not pressed f6)i just let it run its course on the disc, then it hangs up on the blue screen again with the words(crit error 0x0000007f)check hardware etc and if this is the first time you have seen it try starting windows again.

Thankyou for all your time.

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

Answer:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..
