Turn off printer/external HDD on shut down

Question: Turn off printer/external HDD on shut down

I only recently switched to Vista as part of a new build. (BTW, I like it.) On my XP machine, now a secondary on the network, I had it set to turn off the printer and external HDD when I shut down XP. I can't seem to find a similar setting for Vista. Is Vista capable of this and if so how do I set it up?

Preferred Solution: Turn off printer/external HDD on shut down

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi guys & gals, Had this issue for some time now so thought i'd post here and see if others have encountered the same problem. I have 2 external USB 2 & 3 hard drives connected to my Lenovo q180. When shutting down it seems that power remains to both devices and therefore they do not power off (power lights remain on). I have checked the power management settings in both the BIOS and Windows and whatever i try i cannot get them to power off. When these drives are connected to another PC i have they power on and off as per the start-up and shut down process on the PC. Both have the same version of Windows etc and i have never come across this before. Any suggestions would be much appreciated coz its doing my head in having to flick the power buttons off on both devices when i'm done with my q180. Many Thanks, Ben

Answer:Lenovo Q180 will not turn off external hard drives on shut down

Hi

Welcome To Lenovo Community

You system board is supplying power to USB devices
In the bios, there will be  an options,  Under  USB configuration > or ?USB Always On?  one of which might permit powering on of the pc by keyboard or mouse. If this is enabled, the System Board would have to leave those devices with power so it could recognize when they were activated and power on the pc.

So please disable that option

If that option is not available then check under Power > ACPI, disable that to have a check on the
Power condition after shutdown

Hope This Helps
Cheers!!!

Two things might cause this: a marginal power supply that does not have enough power to supply for the printer and too many items in all the USB ports which can't supply all the power requirements.

Can you post your computer specs, along with your operating system, your external gpu name Is this an external gpu or an internal PCI-E video card?

Can you also post the wattage of your power supply.

At a guess I would say your power supply isn't powerful enough to run the card. "2 seconds off" Is this a new card and what was the reason for the change? On the black screen error this sounds like a basic driver error.

In either case remove 'external' video card from your computer, download the latest drivers for your os and internal video card from the manufacturers website go to; control panel, programs and delete ALL video card related drivers then run this program.

http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Sweeper_d6171.html

Delete ALL drivers.

Turn on your onboard video card in bios

Now install the downloaded driver for your on board video card, does your onboard work now?
EDIT OOPS! Welcome to the forum!

Hi, My HP G72-105SA laptop is acting weird lately - fan is constantly on and keeps working even after shutting down Win 10 + Led lights on. I have read thread about downgrading IME to v9.5, but for some reason Win10 does not allow to downgrade it. ( http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/Fan-stil-running-and-power-led-i... )  Is there any other solution to fix this glitch? I am considering to format hard drive and reinstalling clean win 7, but would prefer easier (less time consuming) solution.I guess it wont change anything if I would disassemble laptop and clean Fan heat-sink and reapply thermal paste as I think it is software issue not hardware? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi everyone,

Last week my computer was running fine as it had been since I built it last year. However, one day I left it running while I went take have some coffee and when I returned (after about 1/2 hour) the system was shut off and I could not turn it back on. The fuse in the plug had blown and I can hear a faint static-like crackle when the power lead is connected to the machine.

My first assumption was a PSU problem, but I have tried an alternate PSU and power cable in all combinations with the existing units (though I did change the original fuse ) and it makes no difference - there is absolutely no evidence of any disc spinning or fan whirring or any power getting through at all whatever is used.

So. Motherboard problem? HDD problem?

No idea.

Current system is as follows:

Gigabyte 775 MoBo
450W PSU
3.0GHz dual-core intel CPU
2 x 2GHz OCZ RAM
1 x EVGA 9800GT GPU
1 x IDE HDD (main with O/S)
1 x SATA HDD (sencondary)
1 x IDE DVD drive

Sorry it's vague, but I'm at work now and can't remeber exactly what I put in over a year ago!

Thanks for any advice.
Gav.

Answer:HELP! Computer shut down and will not turn on

Gav,

You didn't mention if you replaced the fuse. I presume you did.

You eliminated the PSU which would be the most likely culprit in this case.

It's not the HDD as there is no power applied at all, as BIOS would start and is independent of the HDD.

It's looking like the MoBo is fried. You will need to take it to the local comp store.

Hi all,
Hope you can help me, attached a USB hub fresh from the bay, once USB was in the PC shut down instantly, like I had pulled the plug out.
Power switch does click but nothing happens. Have swapped PSU, no change, do have the small LED on the mobo on, getting 5.4v through the loom, tried shorting the switch pins but nothing, have pulled cleaned and replaced CPU, nothing.
I'm running out of knowledge and talent fast, what else to check?
This is my PC for surfing, watching films etc, doesn't see high end games or anything taxing, so it's not something I can say has been bothering it.

I'm game to try all that I can, your help is very much appreciated.

I recently upgraded the CPU yesterday and the computer was running in perfect condition yesterday and today. I was playing a game and about a minute after I was done playing the game and was exited onto my desktop... my computer powered off.
So I waited about 30 seconds and turned it back on... it didn't turn on. The speaker that will beep never beeped- and the only thing that happens is the LED lights will dimly turn on. I had to turn my PC off by flicking the switch on the power box in the back. But no display- no nothing. The only fan that will turn when it is on is the rear fan and it barely spins. Aside from that- only LED lights from my fans will turn on and its dim. Is it a power box failure?
My computer is custom built!
NEWEST CPU: AMD FX 8350 (Previous one was a 6200)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Spot 16GB
Storage: WD RE2-GP 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB GDDR5
Case: Sentey GS-6400 Arvina ATX Full Tower

I only know my power supply is 550W. I had a PC repair place swap the one I have now with one that was defective back when I was building the thing and had issues.

I have a weird (reproducible) problem. I have a T60. I put it in standby mode. If I power the machine on (on/off button) and my powersupply is plugged in, my machine turns off. I then have to take the battery out, wait a bit, put the battery back in and power up (without the powersupply plugged in).If I power the machine on (on/off button) and my powersupply is NOT plugged in, my machine turns on normally and I can plug the powersupply back in without a problem. Anybody seen this before? How was it solved? TIA Patrick

Hi

I'm having problem with my comp..this is the specs

AMD X2 4400+
Asus M2N SLI Deluxe
550 Watt PSU
1 GB Ram
256MB 8500GT ECS PCIe Nvidia

I bought this comp about two weeks ago. I worked ok for few days...then I turned it off (shut it down) and next day I tried to turn it on but wouldn't. My guess was PSU problem because the Mobo light was on. So I took all power cables (DVD rom, harddisk, and floppy disk) off and plug them on again and worked alright. So I let the computer on for few days and I turned it on yesterday. And now it's not working, samething happend again. I tried same step took all the cable and plug them on..but didn't do anything....the fan was spinning for a while....about 1 - 2 minutes and the off.

ANY IDEA ? hoping it's not the Mobo....

Answer:Computer won't turn on after shut down

"the fan" which fan was spinning? You can easily see if your PSU is completely dead by turning on the computer and looking at the fan in the PSU. If the fan is spinning then it isn't completely dead. Just because it's not completely dead dosen't mean that it will power your computer but at least you'll know it's not completely dead.

Borrow a PSU from a friend and see if that does the trick. If you don't have any friends then take the PSU to a computer shop and have them test it for you. They'll have a little device there that they'll hookup to the PSU and it will tell them if the PSU is completely dead, mostly dead, partly dead, or not dead at all. It would be really predatory of them to charge you for a simple PSU test. What brand of PSU do you have?

I'm just being a little sarcastic. You probably meant the PSU fan.

While using my pc, it turned off like it was going to standby. I tried to turned it on, but no luck. My PSU will power on, but that's it. There is no indicator light on my mobo. My video card does not turn on either. However the outside power light on my tower turns on.

I had this kind of problem recently, which I posted about [here].

Update:

1) Took out there graphics card, but no start up. I can hear my HD starting up, but still no power to mobo.

2) I'm going to get ahold of a pcu to test that next. Fingers crossed.

Answer:Sudden shut off, won't turn on

Could be one of three things:

1. Your power supply is blown
2. Your motherboard has bit the dust
3. Your graphics card is faulty.

There are a couple of things you can do to test this out.

- remove the graphics card and see if the computer will start up. Obviously, you'll have no screen, but see if the fans spin up and the motherboard light comes on and you'll get a POST beep. If you do, replace the graphics card.

- borrow a power supply from a friend if you can and plug it in, if the computer will start up, your power supply is the culprit.

If those two don't work, it might be your mother board. Try those two things and post back, please.

(Judging by your other thread, it sounds like the power supply to me, but I'd like you to try to troubleshoot this before I make a guess like that.)

Hi, This is second attempt at my first post. The first attempt disappeared after running spell check. My T42 model 2378 FZU computer is currently running on AC power, with Win XPSP2 non-responsive to Shut Down commands, and the Power Button will not shut down the computer. This started when an application froze and I tried to shut down the application with taskmanager. That failed to shut it down. Now taskmanager will not appear. Then I tried Start/Shut down which brought up the dialog box to choose shutdown, but it will not shut down from there either.  QUESTION:  I read elsewhere that removing the battery while the computer is turned on may damage the system. If I leave it on AC and remove the battery, the computer is not calling for battery power, so that might prevent such damage? Then I could pull the AC power, reinstall the battery, and start over. My concern is damage to the system in removing the battery with the computer running. Thanks for any ideas on how to shut down safely.

Answer:computer shut down will not turn on

It could possibly have over heated. If it's working since you received this reply, then that was most likely the case. And in that case, you may want to try prevent it from doing so again. If it still doesn't turn on, check the power cables. Sometimes you get a really bad power connector. It would be better if you give us some PC specs / model etc. Also, is there a reason for posting this under Viruses? If you didn't know where to put it then that's fine, but if something happened before to make you believe its a virus let us know. Yesterday while in use my PC suddenly shut off, at first I though it was the electric but nothing else went off when I tried to turn it back on it powered up for a sec then went off about a second later. I made sure all connections are solid , tested ram, nothing then I read a guide and cleaned the dust from my PSU, after reassembling it turned on, wood for about 2 hours then the same thing. turns on, goes back off seconds later. I left it and now enter I run it on fans run, mouse led lights up but n beeps or signal to keyboard or monitor. is this definitely my power supply? any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Computer shut down suddenly, won't turn on.

PSU would be my first thought but check for fluff between fan and heatsink.

Hello,
Recent times were that I would turn off my comp and the whole shebang turned off. Now I find that the monitor and speakers stay on so I have to turn off at the power strip. I'm sure there is an easy fix for this. If anyone knows what settings may have been 'boogered' with by updates or whatever I'd appreciate the insight.

Two of us use the same comp... The other 'logon ID' still shuts down monitor and speakers, a total power off so it must be an adjustment... but where?

Please... Do that old black magic that you do so well

Thanks in advance.

Answer:XP Settings? turn off ALL power on shut down...

Does your PSU have 2 power sockets on it? One in and one out? You indicate that you have to turn the monitor off at your powerstip which means the computer and monitor are on seperate circuits. Your monitor will normally only switch off with the computer if you have it powered from the output socket on the computer's PSU.

Hi: I would like to know if Windows Vista has a timer feature. Think of timers that you use to turn Christmas lights on and off at desired time each day.

What I am hoping is that the feature would perform the normal shutdown procedure to protect settings and then the next morning ,for example, start the computer up again at say 9:00 am.

I am interested in this to save energy at the library where I work as custodian.

I am reluctant to just use a "Christmas Light" timer as it would merely shut off the power, but not allow for a proper shutdown procedure. I have been advised that an improper shutdown does not allow hard drive to park the pickup stylus correctly.

I know very little about computers, so if there is such a feature, please advise step by step instructions.

Thank you,
Ron

Hi I wonder if you could help me, I was using my Toshiba Satellite Pro A210 (just over 1 year old) last night and it froze on i-tunes then the whole machine shut down but it will not switch back on again. Of course none of the photos or i-tunes music is backed up! Can you advise what I should do next? I was thinking battery but the machine is only just over 1 year old and I normally use it on the mains.Thank you in advanceJulie

Answer:Laptop shut down - won't turn back on again

Disconnect from the mains. Take the battery out. Then hold the power button for 20 seconds or so. Leaving the battery out, try again on mains and see if it powers up.

Probally just a small problem, but I recently just fixed my computer, and when we got it back, everytime I turn on the computer, I have to log in. I was wondering how I could change it so that I automatically get directed to the desktop instead of having to log in when I turn my comp. on.

Thanks.

Answer:Neeed Help Changing ''shut Down'' To ''turn Off''

Before you do that, are there other people who can get to your computer and perhaps do it damage? If so, I would keep it to a log in status.

If NOT, here is what you need to do:

Open Control Panel then User Accounts. Click on your account and change it from a log-in type. I can't be more specific on this last part right now as I am using a public computer - one has to be an administrator in order to change user account settings.

Good afternoon,   I was browsing the Internet when my laptop shut off without warning.  Now, considering the spectre x360's infamy for running very hot, and that it was pretty warm in room at the time, I initially put it down to it overheating. It is worth noting that other than the laptop switching off, there was nothing amiss.  There were no beeping noises, error messages or burning smells as others have reported in other similar threads with similar issues.  I left it it to cool completely and tried to switch it back on, and nothing happened.  The fans don't spin, and none of the LED's  anywhere on the machine light up at any point.       I read through troubleshooting guides, checking the adapter is undamaged, the wall socket works, etc. I was unable to find any problems via the troubleshooting, and the only thing left it recommended was a hard reset.  After much searching I found a thread on here with instructions on how to perform a hard reset on my particular model. These were as follows; -Switch off laptop-Unplug all peripheral devices-Unplug power adapter-hold power button for about 60seconds-plug supply back in and boot up I attempted this with no success, I still can't elicit any response from my laptop.  At this stage I am utterly stuck and can't fathom what to do next.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.   ThanksSam

I have an HP pavilion laptop (not really sure what kind though) and it keeps shutting down out of nowhere even when the batter is fully charged. This is the second time this has happened to me. Last time this happened was last week and a few days later after it shut down it turned on again without any adjustments or recalibrations. It is currently not turning on and I have tried holding down the power button down for a minute without the battery or charger intact and it still wont turn on. However, when I plug in the charger and click the power button the power will turn on for a split second then shut down right away again. Also when I plug in the charger, there is a blinking led light right next to the charger port, but Im not sure what that indicates.

Hi guys.

I'm having an issue where the computer will not shut down unless I turn it off at the PSU/power supply (I've had the issue for about a month now).

Windows 7 will run through its normal shut down procedures, then the screen goes black, but nothing happens apart from the fans going really loud for a few seconds before they quiet down and nothing else happens.

The computer restarts fine, but does not shut down at the power button.

I suspect a faulty motherboard (Asus M2N68-CM - pretty old now), or maybe a service/process is not finishing after shut down.

Would greatly appreciate some expert knowledge on this one!

Thanks,
Josh

Answer:Computer will not shut down/turn off power

Could you do a shutdown trace by following this article: Gathering a Startup, Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate, or Reboot Trace

Please download the latest Windows 8 SDK here, it works flawlessly with Windows 7: Windows Software Development Kit (SDK) for Windows 8

Once you run the setup, choose the install location, hit next and select ONLY "Windows Performance Toolkit" and click install. After this, you HAVE to restart the system, then follow the given tutorial.

This can help forum members and even me (I'm not much of an expert in analyzing these results ) identify if anything is stuck during shutdown.

OR

There might be faulty driver or some bad setting in the BIOS. Try resetting the BIOS to the defaults.

I have a compaq presario v2000 laptop and I have only had it for almost 2 years. I was just on my laptop 2 days ago and emailing a friend and all of the sudden my laptop just shut off and I have no idea why. I pushed the power button to start the laptop back up and nothign happened. I unplugged the AC adapter and took out the battery for a few minutes then put both back in and still nothing happened. I called a computer tech dude and he told me that there isn't much I can do. Either my AC adapter broke or my motherboard crashed. I just don't understand how my motherboard could crash with only 2 years of using the computer. I went to Staples and tested out another AC adapter on my laptop and the laptop Power light won't even come up. So for some reason even with a good AC adapter my laptop still doesn't get power. Can anyone help me out? I really don't want to drop another 1000 bucks on a laptop when I just did 2 years ago. Is my laptop really useless now? If anyone can help me get it back started up please let me know. A guy at staples told me he could probably fix it for $390! I don't really want to pay that much money to fix my laptop. I would rather sell it for parts and buy a new one IF it came down to that. Please let me know if anyone can help

thank you

Taking the battery out, draining the power, unplugging the CMOS battery. Trying to turn it on with only the power cord  (no battery). And I get nothing. The laptop is getting power as the power light by the plug in is on, but nothing happens when I press the power button. No lights or anything. I am an ex-computer technician so I know what I'm doing but nothing is working. I need this laptop to work and I've already put over 200 into gettingit working . Hi, today my computer turned off randomly and i cant get it to start again.
When i try to turn it on the fans doesen't start but a blue light in my computer is on as usual. Its like the computer is on, exept the fans. My monitor isent responding either.
This have happened a few times this week but i have had it going again after i have turned the power source of and on. Could it be something with the smart fan?
And if, how to i turn it on/off without starting the computer.

Sorry for my bad knowlegde.

Answer:Computer shut of and wont turn on.

Given what you have told us, my first instinct is that the power supply has failed.

This would be particularly true if you can disconnect the power cord from the power supply for a while (15-30 minutes) and then when you plug it back in the PC will start. That is a classic symptom of a bad capacitor.

If you have not been getting any system errors, warnings, or any other indications of a failing device then I would first try replacing the power supply.

If you can borrow one from another computer to test with that would be best.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 that runs Vista Home Premium. Whenever I update anything that requires a restart I have to manually shut it down first, then turn the laptop on again. It says it the installation was "successfull" but then it shows up again on my windows update and it never shows up on my computer's "System Properties" as running SP1. I have an HP Pavilion a1520y and I went for a two month vacation this summer. When I returned I found out that my computer was doing something it has never done before in my life. When it goes into a low power state (i.e Shut down, hibernation, standby), the power button still stays lit and the fans go crazy. The only way to stop this is to pull the plug. It happens randomly so one week its fine then one day it acts up. I checked my motherboard and the caps are OK. I think there is something wrong with the Power Supply. Please Help Me! This is getting very annoying and it could bring something bigger and worse.

PS: I did upgrade my BIOS and it didn't help the problem.

Pushing the power button shuts it down but it won't turn back on unless I use the usb cable connecting it to computer "B" then "A" what gives????

I'm posting from my laptop at the moment. The rig in my sig is not working.

Tonight, I was just browsing the net and suddenly it just shut off. I figured it was just a crash, so I turned it back on, it turned on for about 4 seconds and then shut back off. So I waited a minute, turned it on, it stayed on for 2 seconds and shut off. And it got progressively worse from there, until it did nothing when I hit the power button.

On the motherboard there is a yellow led that is flashing somewhat erradically when I turn on the power supply switch. I "believe" that it's usually solid, though I only really remember the blue led that's always on.

I'm thinking that it's either a fried motherboard or power supply. And I want to lean toward motherboard since the led's are still on, indicating power from the psu.

Can anyone tell me whats going on?

Answer:Computer shut off, won't turn back on

Sounds like PSU to me. If your motherboard died it wouldn't progressively get worse, it would just stop working. Get a new PSU

I built a custom PC about a month ago, and did a clean install of an OEM copy of Windows 8 with no problems. Upon launch this past Thursday, I downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store, which I like except for one problem:

Shutting down the computer by pressing the power button or "shut down" from the charms bar power menu shuts down Windows, but leaves the computer itself on and running, case fans spinning and all. Oddly enough shutting down the computer using the menu I get by right-clicking the new start button shuts down the computer properly, and that is the only way to do it without flipping the computer's power switch. That said, I would still like it to work 100% properly. What is happening?

Answer:Computer does not turn of when shut down from charms bar.

Good to see I'm not the only one with this problem. Mine started just after I installed 8.1 from the store as well. When I shut down or restart my PC, the screen goes off but the PC keeps running. I have to use either the physical power button or restart button to shutdown/restart the PC. I used Acronis to go back to Windows 8 and the problem solved. Just tried 8.1 again and the problem is back.
I read somewhere that it was related to McAfee virus protection or a driver called express cache but I have neither. Apparently this shutdown/restart problem was big in the 8.1 Preview and apparently it wasn't fixed.
IT doesn't seem anyone else is having this issue or at least to a point where it's being talked about or fixed.
I'll just have to go back to Windows 8 and wait for further updates.

My mom left her HP laptop on while she was not using it. When she came back it had gone to sleep. After that it would not turn back on and the light that is usaly on when the Laptop is pluged in is no longer light. Because of this I think the battery might have completely died. Does any one else have an other theory?

Answer:Laptop want turn on after force shut off

What is the model number of the HP laptop?

Sounds like a hardware or accessory issue, definitely.

----

Try this:

1.) Remove the battery from the laptop
2.) Remove the adapter from the laptop DC jack.
3.) Press the power button several times.
4.) Next, hold the power button down and count to 5 slowly.

5.) Now, plug the adapter in with-OUT the battery.
6.) If that doesn't work, attach the battery and unplug the adapter.
7.) If still no-go, plug in the adapter and try again.

See if that helps. If not, you have a bigger issue that may need physical inspection.

Tonight, I was using my Yoga 3 14" in a normal fashion, studying for my exam that I have in the morning. All of a sudden, it just shut off (lucky me). It did not feel very warm to the touch, but it would not turn back on. I pressed the power button, and the power button would light up and the battery icon would light up, but nothing else turned on. Then, very quickly, the underside started to get very very hot (so much so that I won't leave my hand on it longer than a second or two). It has been like this for a few hours now, still hot, and still not turning on.Im really worried that this prolonged heat to the inside might do more damage than is already done. Hi Zevain,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m sorry to hear that your Lenovo ThinkPad X220T is not powering on.

I would suggest you to perform Flee Power ? remove the battery and any other peripheral device connected to the computer. Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds and then connect only the AC Adapter and try to turn ON the computer.

Swap the battery and AC adapter with a good known one if you can to check if it?s a battery/adapter failure. Take out the memory, start the system and check if you hear beep sounds.

Please let me know the happenings!

Best regards,
Mithun.

Hello, my name is Tabitha and I own a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop, it's a year old and operates on Windows 8. My laptop shut off and the screen went black, when I tried to turn my laptop back on, it wouldn't respond. I tried holding the power button for 30 seconds, nothing. I tried removing and replacing the battery, nothing. I tried unplugging the battery and just plugging my laptop in with it's charger chord, and the laptop still did not come on. My holiday break ends in a week and don't have the funds to purchase a new laptop, any and all help would be beneficial.
There is no water damage, I had Mcfee security, antivirus and malware protection on my laptop, so I don't believe a virus has infected my computer. I didn't have anything plugged into my laptop at the time that it shut off.
ANY HELP, WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
Thank you in advance

Answer:Windows 8 computer shut off, will not turn back on.

Sometimes it's as simple as the power adapter has failed, it ran on battery until it drained, and then shut off. If you have access to another Dell compatible power adapter from a family member or friend try that first.

Is it less than a year old? If so you could try to get warranty service on it from Dell.

Definitely don't go and buy a new laptop without at least taking it to a service center to have it checked out.

I recently installed GTX670 SLI in my machine and run some benchmarks to test it is all working.

Afterwards, I did a clean format complete re-install with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 with updates. It appears now when I shut down my machine, windows turns off the display and seems to shut down but does NOT turn off the fans/LEDs on my computer.

I then re-installed a clean windows 7, installed my drivers ONLY (no windows updates) and it shuts down/turns the computer off fine.

Not sure what is going on, some update must be causing this? Can anyone help me?

Answer:Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 shut down not turn off after updates

Another install, something strange is happening.

When I shut down. Sometimes it works sometimes it don't.

If it don't then I have to hold power button 10 s and shut down. Then when I turn pc on it turns on for a few sec and then turns off, and then turns on again by itself and proceeds to continue to load up Windows.

Am now reinstalling and going to continue to test this.

This computer belongs to a friend. He says it suddenly shut down avast and then he couldn't do anything on line or run any anti malware or virus scanner. I was able to get avast removed with the removal tool from website. Now I can do things, but am sure it has something going on. This is an older HP computer a1000n that is running xp. Here is the Hijack this log------

So I normally leave my computer on 24/7 and I noticed after waking up the past couple of days it hasn't turned the monitor off or even went to screensaver like it normally would do after 10 minutes and 5 minutes respectively like I set it to do. After searching Google for several minutes I couldn't find a solution that worked. I also noticed my Starry Night screensaver that doesn't come with Windows 7 was mysteriously gone from the list and I had to reinstall it.

Anyway I can get it to activate by pressing the preview button for the screensaver and I can press the appropriate buttons on my keyboard to make the monitor go to sleep like it normally would after 10 minutes but they never auto-activate.

I've tried updating drivers, specifically my video card's drivers, I've tried checking the advanced options of power options, I've tried typing in some powercfg command line commands I can't remember the syntax of entirely, I've tried checking the registry, I've tried a lot of things. Are there any ideas anyone has?

Answer:Screensaver and Monitor Auto-Shut Off Don't Turn On

As silently as the problem came, it went away for no apparent reason as well. I guess problem solved.

I was playing a few games on my XPS 625 and when I went to start up MSN I noticed my computer had the symbol where my shutdown button usually is that said it needed to shut down for updates, needing to go to the store I clicked it and headed to the store.
When I came back my computer was off, as expected, but when I turn it on my screens do not unhybernate and my mouse doesn't light up, my computer runs for about 10-20 seconds and then it starts beeping 6 times in quick succession and then it stays quiet for about a second and then repeats, I took out the CMOS battery for about a minute or two and put it back in, as well as taking out many of the parts and air-canning out as much dust as I could and it continues to beep when I start it up, any ideas how I may fix this?

Answer:Shut computer down to update, came home and it won't turn on

Was there a lot of dust inside the case? You might want to remove the memory and re install it...

My Lenovo B50-30 suddenly shut down when I was watching a 1080p video. At first I thought it overheated so I left it a while but when I came back to it, it won't turn on. I followed the instructions from online, like taking out the battery, pressing the power button 10 times, holding it down for 30s, removing and putting the ram back in and none of the steps worked. When I plug the power adapter back in, there is no charging light. Does anybody know if it could be fixed or what the fault is? My laptop is over 2 years old so out of warranty and I have lots of data that's now lost at the moment.

I was playing a game and my laptop completely cut out. I assumed it was an overheating problem, but it was only warm, not hot. It's been about 15mins now and it's still not turning on. When I press the power button the light comes on for a brief second then turns off and the speaker makes a popping sound. I've tried removing the battery and holding the power button for a minute to drain any excess, didn't work though. Also when the laptop is plugged in the charging light still works, so it's not completely dead. What else can I try?

Answer:Laptop shut off...wont turn back on :(

Try switching it on with the battery out first and if the problem persists then check the adaptor for power output (ie volts)

Answer:New Y410p shut down when turn on the keyboard light

hi sj123,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

In the video the KB backlight turned off together with the display,
  Question..
Did the computer shut off or just the display that you can wake it up?
Have you tried turning on the Keyboard back light and move the mouse around to prevent idle status that turns off the display?

Best regards
Solid Cruver

Hi all. Hope one of yahs can help me out.

2 wenesdays ago I constructed my first comp, and to my amazement I managed to put it together flawlessly.

I'm a heavy gamer. Lots of FPS, and WoW. I play around 3-10 hours a, day depending on the day.

This morning I wake up and boot up my comp. Everything is fine. I log into World of Warcraft and play for around 5 minutes before suddenly my comp just shuts down. Almost like as if someone pushed the power button.

I'm thinking "WTF?", so I check my monitor and speakers and sure enough they are powered on, and responding. I tried to turn the comp back and on and nothing happened. I checked inside the tower and the motherboard LED light is on. The orange enet light is also on.

At the moment I don't have the hardware to test swap (I will on monday). I was hoping that some of you may have overcome this problem before. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Here are my comp parts in case they may help.

MB Asus P5ND2-SLI NF4SLI 775
VGA Asus N EN6800GT/2DT/256MB R
CPU INTEL P4 630 800M LGA775 2M R
MEM 1GX2 Corsair VS2GBKIT667D2 R
HD 250G WD 7200 SATA2 16MB WD2500KS
DVD BURNER PLXTOR PX-740A
Liminator Case with 550W PS

Answer:My new comp shut down while gaming, won't turn back on!

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Check all cables/connections etc.

Try a different psu. If that doesn`t help, then it`s probably the mobo or cpu that`s died.

Hello!
My 4 year old Lenovo Ideapad Z580 shut down after i plugged in the charger and im unable to turn it on now. I was watching a video on YT and realised my battery was about 70% so i decided to plug in the charger. After I did that the screen went black without any warning, the laptop just turned off. When i press the power button nothing happens, and whats more suprising is that the LED light that lights up when the charger is connected doesnt work either. So it just kinda died. Nothing smelled bad, the laptop wasnt hot at all, i have no idea what had happened. There was no noise when i turned the charger on. So if u have any idea what could have happened and how to fix it, please let me know. I tried the 30sec/ 60 sec push power button without battery/charger and it didnt work. Thanks in advance for any possible solutions or ideas

Answer:Laptop shut down after plugging it to charger, cant turn it

Well you could try testing to see if it is the power cord or the battery first.

Try a different charger cord with the laptop and see if it works. If that doesn't do it, try a different battery.

Should that not work, then you may need to have it looked at to see if it is fixable, or needs replacing.

The laptop is a Toshiba satellite.
I don't know what the problem is, I turned on my laptop today and before I could open the internet, my laptop shut down completely. My laptop tends to get hot quite a lot, and it does shut down by itself when it gets too hot - however my laptop wasn't hot as I'd only just turned it on! I left my laptop for a few hours, and it still isn't turning on, even with a power source.
:-o
I've looked online and I think the heatsink may be clogged as I never clean the fan part of the laptop, does anyone have any other suggestions or advice?

Thanks :]

I just purchased the 1TB+8GB version of the Lenovo Y70 touch laptop from NewEgg.com on Black Friday, and less than a month later, I can't turn it on. I was using it earlier today, and it just shut off abruptly for new reason I can come up with. I did get it to turn back on, but then it shut off again without warning a few more times, and now I can't get it up and running again. One thing I noticed was that it seemed to shut off whenever I even lightly tapped the frame below the keyboard. The second time I turned it back on, I noticed it shut off when I rested my elbow on it. I tried to look around online and I can't find anyone having the same problem as me with this. I don't know if I get a defective model or what. I've never dropped it or smacked it into anything, so I have no idea what has happened.

Answer:Lenovo Y70 Touch Shut Off and Won't Turn Back On

Check your power adapter. Check that it is properly plugged in. Once done try again to test the unit.

HELP!! I have a laptop that will turn on enough to boot to the Win XP screen, then shuts off. Once it shuts off, it will not turn back on until about an hour or so later. There's a little blue light in the front that will blink like it's in hibernation, but it refuses to turn back on! Oh yeah, we checked the power cord (fine) and also the battery (also fine) Any ideas??:

Answer:Laptop will turn on briefly, shut off and stay off...

Overheating would cause this ...if the heatsink is plugged up with dust and then the CPU would overheat and would not startup until it had cooled down enough
Also make sure you hear the fan spinning on startup

Answer:Compaq nc6000 suddenly shut off. Won't turn back on. Not h...

This is as good as any. That is a great old classic laptop but has to be about 15 years old. I have to conclude it has passed on. Where do you live (country)? We could probably find you an nc6000 on eBay for less than $50 and you could put your hard drive in and boot it up and at least get your data off. You could also use another computer, remove the hard drive from the nc6000, get an inexpensive usb adapter and get your working files off the nc6000 and go on down the road.

Hi- my desktop got the Vista 2012 virus. I downloaded the cleanup programs needed on my laptop, tossed them on a flash drive, and as soon as I plugged it into the desktop, the whole computer just shut down, blinked right off. Now pressing the power button to turn it back on does nothing. The power cable is still plugged in, the outlet is working, etc. There are no external issues. Anyone have a suggestion of what's wrong or what I could do? Thanks.
