Setup.exe error when trying to load application on Vista OS

Question: Setup.exe error when trying to load application on Vista OS

Hi. I have a software CD that came with a textbook for a class I am taking. The software application works fine on my desktop computer which has the XP OS. However, when I try to install or run it on my laptop which operates on the Vista OS, I get an error message that says...

"Setup.exe has stopped working. A problem caused th program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available"

This is very frustrating. I keep Windows updates current daily. I don't know what to do. I need to use this software on my laptop at school. PLEASE HELP ASAP!!! THANK YOU!!!

Preferred Solution: Setup.exe error when trying to load application on Vista OS

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've tried scanning my friends computer with CCleaner and Spybot as well as anti-virus and nothing was solved. The computer prompts "Application Failed to Load" errors upon log in. Then a program called PhotoGallery tries to install automatically but fails repeatedly. There is no internet connection either. The wireless signal shows it is connected but it can not load any websites. Here is the HiJackThis log please be aware that I probably will not be able to get to the computer until at least Friday at the latest. Hi,
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pk 3. All Microsoft updates are installed - as far as I know.
I have this error message appear when the computer boots to the Welcome screen.
It reads :
Setup.exe - Application Error
The instruction at 0x00404f67 reference memory at 0x00000004. The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
OK Cancel *

I close the error message down and the computer boots up very slowly to the desktop.
I've run AVG anti-virus, Malwarebytes, Spybot, nothing untoward was found, and I cleared out the Java Cache, and the Temporary Internet Files, Defragged, and then did a Scandisk, which reported Volume is clean (or similar).
Please can you help?
Thank you,
Anne

Answer:Setup.exe - Application Error

Have you recently installed a new programme or piece of hardware, or updated a driver or installed an update?
You could try system restore or load the last known configuration. To do this you need to boot up the pc and as it is booting keep pressing the F8 key.
"Windows Advanced Options Menu" should appear where you will find last known good configuration - highlight this and press enter.

Error message is:'The Application Failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006)'this happens when I try to use any setup.exe file on a CD/DVD. Yet Windows can see the CD drive and it will play music and films.I loaded the same file on another computer to a 2GB USB Flash Drive, then loaded it to the first computer via USB and the same setup.exe file worked fine, so is this an optic drive problem or a missing Windows file? This is on a new 80GB hard drive with a clean install of Windows XP Pro 2002 SP2, AMD Sempron CPU and PC Chips Motherboard, the CD/DVD RW drive is a new Philips.Everything else works fine, can anyone help please.

I recently obtained two Microsoft programs as a gratuity for participating in a Microsoft development project.   1) Microsoft Office Professional 2007 and 2)Microsoft Flight Simulator.  When I try to load either one, I get an error message.  i.e. (for  Office) I get;  ""Error 1935 An error occurred during installation of assembly component {97E81AF1-0E47-DC99-A01F-C8B3B9A1E18E}, HRESULT: Ox800736FU.""  When I try to load the Flight Simulator I get, again, "Error 1935" But with a different string of alphanumerical characters.    I am using a HP Pavilion, with 2 GB ram, 200 GB hard drive  and Vista OS.   What really ticks me off is that, before I tried to load Office 2007, I unistalled Office 2000 that I had been using and I cannor reinstall it.   Now I am stuck with no WORD  or EXCEL.   Can any one help.   Thanks for listening (reading) to my troubles,    JIM

can anyone help with this one
everytime i try to load any application in office 2003 it fails to load due to
SKU011.cab

i have been into hkey local machine/software/microsoft/office/11.0/delivery/
(download code) and i have changed the CDcache from 2 to 0 as some people have recommended and this does not work for me just causes more problems.

i do not have the office disk as it was pre installed on the computer. my vista was originally bought in spainish and i have since had the os changed into english
can anyone help please

Answer:Office 2003 In Vista Will Not Load Any Application

fixed my problem

had to go back into regedit hkey local machine/software/microsoft/office/11.0/delivery/
(download code) and i have changed the CDcache from 2 to 0

if you get another error message after this then this worked for me
google esnips YT561401.CAB download file
google esnips ZS561401.CAB download file

then loacte your MSOCache file and under 90000409-xxxx-xxxx-xxx (or whatever this long number happens to be) and add both your files that you have downloaded into here
and it should now work a treat

I decided to get working again my other old pc. It has no OS Installed, harddrive is blank, i was using the harddrive of it on the new computer, but then i decided to put it back, so i reformatted it, then put it back on the old pc. But can't install an OS, since whenever i do so, It says' Boot from CD/DVD, when on windows xp, it just hang up. But on vista, it loads, but later on, an error will appear.

The Harddrive is working on the new pc.

Not sure where the problem is, I already replaced the IDE Cables to a new one, which still not fixed the problem

new hard drive and reinstalling operating system from recovery disks. hp laptop, vista. recovery disks sucessfully loaded windows but on reboot to finish setting up, it gives error message that cannot load winsetup.dll, file may be corrupt, restart the installation. i have restarted installation both from recovery disks and recovery partition. same problem. i have to say i did make these recovery disks after having trouble with the old hard drive booting.... i was able to reinstall windows from the recovery partition on the old drive so that i could run the disk making utility. any ideas?

Answer:winsetup.dll cannot load during vista setup

I think your problem stems from the fact that your old hard drive was starting fail before you did the recovery, so the recovery discs you made may be faulty because of that. I would contact your PC/Laptop manufacturer and ask if they can supply a set of recovery discs for your PC model.message edited by phil22

I have been trying to install a new disk of Office 2003 Prof onto a new Lenovo T400s Win XP Pro laptop and I can't get the cd rom to read the disk consistently.

When I do get the disk to "run" it asks for the product key. After entering that eventually get an error:
D:\autorun.vbs
Line 12
Char 1
Error .\setup.exe is not a valid Win 32 application
Code 800700Cl
Source WshShell.EXEC

I received a replacement disk and I haven't been able to get that one to run either. When I try to open the first disk, it stops responding. I haven't been able to open the second one at all.

Is there a way to get the device to read new (yet older version) of software. I don't like Office 2007, which is pre-installed though I haven't activated it.

Thanks!

so I'm having an error that apparently nobody else has had when it comes to .dll's and "not valid windows image". 2 dll's pop up errors when any process starts to load:

"The application or DLL C:/WINDOWS/system32/nmnngj.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

I hit ok. its followed by:

"The app.....c:/WINDOWS/system32/rgoenh.dll is not a valid......"

where "..."=same as first. I hit ok and the application opens. it happens before the log in screen for windows as well, and after the login screen as well for explorer.exe.

I don't have an install disk nor repair disks for XP.

btw, this all started after badly infected computer recovered with malwarebytes followed by spybot s&d and finally SUPERAnti-spyware.

I also have 2 files in the startup directory, "winlogin" and "winlogun" both located in temp folder C:/DOCUME~1/NATA~1/temp but when I open that folder there are no files by those names and thats including hidden files. this folders also didn't show up as hidden, I had to type their address to get to them.

the computer seems to be cured of the infection, although I get those errors when loading programs and random system sounds (like the loud error, not the small error sound) when nothing is going on...computer is idle.

i have attached the mbam logs, there are 3 of them, notice the last is a quick scan.

Questions:
Is getting Application errors, "Instruction at 0x???? referenced memory at 0x????. The memory could not be read (the ?'s are different values), be a symptom of something failing or purely a software thing?
Can a SSD or HDD go bad but I still be able to see the data in a DOS DIR prompt?
Can memory be bad put pass the windows memory test?

Thank you for your help!

Background:
I have not installed anything recently, however today when I turned on my machine (Win 7 Pro x64 on SSD and programs on 1TB drive) it restarted within seconds and I got the windows restore or start normally message. Neither work. I do have a restore disk that does work but and I have done the memory tests and chkdsk on all drives and find no errors. However when I try a system restore I get an application error within seconds saying memory can not be read.

First up, has this game been downloaded? This error is common in pirated games.

If you did buy it, try restarting your computer, updating drivers, updating windows etc.

plus, did you even google it?

Hi everyone,

I purchased the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim two days ago and haven't been able to get it working since then. I have installed it and everything, but when I click on the 'run application' button, all that happens is I get the 'Application Load Error 5:0000065434' message. The first time I tried to get it working, it got past that error message and I got onto the home screen of the game, but when I clicked on 'play game', nothing would happen.

Any ideas???

Thanks alot,

Hi there!

I am new to the forums and hopefully I am posting this in the right area!

I have had difficulties downloading Windows 8 from a USB drive containing a copy of Windows 8 (x64) I copied from my main laptop. It gets to the load screen but then states a Load Drive Error. I have tried several solutions online but no luck.

PC: Acer Aspire E 15 / E5-521-48KN
CPU TYPE: AMD A4-6210 APU with AMD Radeon R3 Graphics

My guess from perusing the following forum by link: Sata Controller Driver missing form Wndows 8 for Acer Aspi

Is that I need to download the proper drivers for the Windows 8 setup to be successful. Any thoughts on how to proceed?

Thank you so kindly!

Is there any info recorded anywhere in Windows, that tells me the name of a setup file
that (ideally including it's path)?

An executable can usually (always?)
be opened with 7-zip, often (like itunes) revealing the executable internally to contain a collection of .msi's. Maybe info about the execution of one of these is logged somewhere, in which case (with a bit more effort) I think the 'origin' (setup.exe) could
be inferred...

I read that the journal records every file that's opened!!! is this human-readable?

Thinking aloud. I have about 7 widi setup executables I obtained whilst trying to setup
intel widi, similar scenario with several other applications installed on various VHDs. I'd like to purge my downloads>>setups folder, but retain installation-media for important applications (just in case).

So much info is installed during installation (ie setup/msi stuff as well as appdata of
course), surely something this simple must be possible somehow, somewhere! somebody?

I am trying to fix a laptop with vista. I keep getting an application error, 0xc000007b. I have tried to install SAS, but it will not install, same with spybot, and avg. Malwarebytes says there is no problem. This computer has Norton 360, and I beleive it has an issue with one its dll files, because I also get a pop up error for that.

I have disabled Norton, I think, it no longer comes up when I turn the laptop on. I ran windows defender because that was all that I could get to work, and that came up empty.

This is my sisters computer, and she apparently did not have any problems until one day she lost her wireless connection.

Please help.

Thank you,
Mandy

Answer:Vista Application Error

Application errors are more frequently software related issues and not due to malware. Thus I'm going to move this to the Software Forum. If at a later time malware is found to be an issue, we can move this back to the Malware Forum.

I suggest that you post the whole complete word for work error messages that you are receiving and also describe exactly what you are doing when the error occurs. Also test to see if it occurs when you boot in safe mode using the same user account.

I have a Dell Zino HD media desktop, and it all of a suddent showed this error on booting up:
CMOS checksum error, F2 to Run SETUP, F1 to load defaults

The thing is, I can't get it to move past it. I've tried 3 different keyboards, many restarts, and nothing gets it to move past this screen.
How can I overcome this?

Unplug the system and hold the power button for 30 sec.  If that doesn't get the system to POST, the BIOS/CMOS is corrupt - replace the mainboard.

in 2007 CRY4DAWN made this thread.

"When I attempted to restart or shutdown Vista, I always get an error box that pops up that says POWERCFG.EXE and has an error code of 0xc0000142. The bigger problem is the computer never shuts down because of this error. If you hit ok on this error it usually causes it to not shut down at all. Usually I just let it close the windows on its on."

Im getting the EXACT same damn problems for a several months now. I can't seem to find a solution online anywhere...what kind of shiet is this MS? At least try to find a resolution to these types of problems. Reasons like these make me want to switch to Apple computers.

Yesterday my computer randomly shut off while doing work...this is really starting to piss me off...

Hi,

I'm getting an error message every time I attempt to run a program except for basic windows programs (basically everything in the accessories folder). The error messages reads: The application failedto initialize properly (0xc0000005). click ok to terminate the application.

I've tried system restore (5 days prior to the problem) and that didn't work. I tried starting in safe mode(both with and without network), but the error message still occurs. i can't run my antivirus software to see if it is a virus or just a system malfunction.

I don't know if this would cause the problem, but someone tried to shutdown my computer, but closed it before it had fully shutdown (it's a dell m1530 laptop). When I later openned it, it was stuck on the shutting down screen and I had to manually shut it down by holding down the power button.

Any suggestions of how to fix the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Ray

please help me i need my laptop for school and i dont know if my warranty covers programs.

thank you very much!!!!

Answer:Windows Vista Exploer.exe Application Error

Most warranties don't cover programs. As for the explorer error, we'll need more information about what the error message says. Also, can you get into Safe Mode (as Windows starts to load, press F8) - if so, have a look at your Event Viewer (type it into the Start box) to see if there's any errors in the Windows logs (particularly the System and the Application sections).

Hi, I'm running a Toshiba Satellite, less than a year old. When i tried to use it today, I found myself unable to open many programs, including Skype. When l would try to open Mozilla Firefox, a window would pop up saying "Open With" and then give a list of recommended programs, as well as allowing me to "Browse..." for a different program to open it with. It calls Mozilla Firefox firefox.exe. This is the computer's reaction when I try to open most folders, and as long as I select the same program in the "Open With" window as the one I was originally trying to open, it will work. However, some programs, like Skype, will only pop up with an error window saying "C:\Program Files\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe Application not found", so there is no way to open those programs that I have found. I'm currently running a virus scan, although this doesn't seem like any virus I have ever encountered. I am running Symantect Anti-Virus protection, which I believe is owned by Norton. Someone on another site said this might be a firewall problem. If so, how do i fix my firewall? ANY advice is appreciated. Thank you so much.

Vista Ultimate 32bit SP1 -- Dell Dimension E520
Have a recent re-install of OS on a new hard drive, using a (previously used copy of a) Re-installation DVD.
Has been working fine (from 2 weeks ago) up until yesterday.
Now cannot log-in.

Today, on power up, reported the black 'Failed to shutdown properly' screen (or whatever the usual message is).
Have seen this occasionally if pc is turned off while in sleep mode, so thought nothing of it.
'Enter to start windows normally' allowed boot-up to proceed to the Switch User account selection screen.
(Sorry the preceding error messages are vague, wasn't expecting any later issues.)

Trying to login to an account produces the popup saying that explorer.exe has failed to initialise:

"explorer.exe application error
The application failed to initialise properly (0xc0000022). Click OK to terminate the application."

This is followed by further popups indicating that the Task Scheduler has stopped working, and that Windows Problem Reporting has stopped working. If I click OK on the explorer error popup, this also reports that it stopped working. Thereafter I'm left with a black screen.
Ctrl-alt-del returns me to a Vista screen allowing the choice of Lock/switch user/log off/change password/start task manager. Log-off returns me to the Switch User screen; Task Manager does not start.

I have tried the POST check of the hard disk (all OK).
I have booted from the re-installation DVD and run the memory test... Read more

Can you try running in safe mode? You can get there by hitting F8 just after the BIOS Post screen.

this just started happening: whenever i type anything into the search box in the start menu, i get an error that says "the instruction at 0xXXXXXXXX referenced memory at 0xXXXXXXXX. the memory could not be read. click on ok to terminate the program"

clicking ok restarts explorer.exe, and this happens in safe mode, as well as regular boot.

Im getting this image on my dads laptop and I cant load anything it says that every time I click on a program and I even tried plugging in a jump drive with the version.dll library on it so I could put the new version of that file on his pc but it wont even let me open anything on jump drive without saying same message and I tried doing this in safe mode too and same thing happens. Any ideas?
Also I did try system restore point from like may and one from the day before this all started happening on his computer and it didnt fix it either.

I had a friend suggest i would recommend buying a second hard drive, installing the OS on that fresh, then mount the original drive and copy files off it
if you don't care about the files, just format and be done with it but I was hoping it would be an easier then that. Any help would be most appreciated, thanks.

If you have a dynamic disk in your rig, Vista will not play well with it on some rigs. Even if the disk you are installing Vista on is NOT dynamic (and Vista will not install onto a dynamic disk), just having a dynamic disk active during install can halt the process with the error message along the lines of "windows encountered an error that prevents the next stage etc." (can't remember the exact terminology but you get the idea).

Just unplug the dynamic disk long enough to get Vista installed, then you are good to go.

On my rig, I have (2) 60gb SATA drives in Striped mode, and a 250gb dynamic SATA disk. With the 250gb active, setup will error out no matter what. I just unplugged the SATA connection to it and Vista installed like a dream. Plug it back in after install, and away we go.

Hope this might help some.....

I?ve been using Windows Mail (Vista 32 bit) for almost a year with no problems. Recently my email account in windows mail was deleted, and I did not do it ! I have tried many, many, many times to add my account back in unsuccessfully. After I click finish on the last screen I receive the following error msg: ?An error occurred while reading the new account information. No changes have been made.? ?my account is not added. I also verified that I?m typing my password in in lower case as it should be. I have even phoned Comcast to verify my entries on each screen and they are correct (incoming/outgoing servers, etc). I also installed Windows Live Mail and I had the same problem in that pgm, it issued the exact same error. In Windows Live Mail I can set up the account manually and in the outgong server, Comcast uses port 587 so, I can specify that port and it still does not help. I don?t think there is a problem in either software, I think it?s somewhere else in my OS, system, or ports or something? I have no clue.

Can anyone help me ?

I was asked to look at a computer. It is over a year old. The girl claims she was messing with her computer (not sure what that means) but she claims she was prompted to put in the Cd that came with her e-machine. Apparently, earlier in the week, she had her cd-rom drive opened and the dog hit it by accident. Her complaint was the cd-rom door wouldn't open. I took off the side and the front panel. Pressed the start button. A screen came up and said about scanning the system for errors and that it would repair them and not effect the files. Ok, I did that. Then I got a black screen with the following message:
! ! Qcx0000034 ! ! 251/69108 (_0000000000000000.cdf-ms)

What's amazing is that the door opened without a problem for me. So there was nothing wrong with the cdrom door. Now this is the first time I've really had to deal with Vista because I've heard too many bad things about it. So does anyone out there have any idea what this code means?
The computer is over a year old and it is out of warranty or else I would have told them to call the manufacturer.

Two days ago I turned off my then working fine desktop and unplugged it due to lightning storms. I tried turning it on the next day and it would crash then send me to a screen with launch startup repair or start windows normally. If you choose recovery it barely starts loading the windows logo (you can see a shadowy version) before it blue screens saying PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA error 0x00000050. Every tenth startup try it switches to error 0x0000007e. Not being completely new to annoying computers I tried loading safe mode and everything else in that menu. Nothing loads I just get the same error.

Safe mode loads to crcdisk.sys then crashes with the same 50 error. I tried booting from the DVD and get the same error. On one of the startups I loaded some kind of repair utility (haven't seen since) that scanned the memory and hard drive among other things. Everything passed.

I can load the setup menu and the boot menu. However sometimes when I try f8 to get the safe mode menu it flashes a message about missing bios and then jumps to the startup repair menu. (I'm figuring out the flashes by videotaping them then rewinding the video)

I expect the hardware is fine, but can't get into the computer to make sure. Thankfully almost everything I need is backed up on a hard drive and online, but since I can't get the install disk to boot how would I reinstall anyway?

I was trying to respond to an old post about this error - it was an unsolved post - but was over the time limit. I have been encountering "Error 1402 - Vista Setup can not open registry key..... xxxyyyyzz"

I was attempting to install Microsoft Office 2007 when I received this error. I was able to fix it using Microsoft's "Fix It" wizard. I have posted a link here..

How do I restore security settings to the default settings? This restores your registry to default security settings, and in my case, it clearly fixed my error 1402.

Hope this helps.

I was manually installing service pack 2 on windows vista because i was told this would sort out my problem with not being able to do any auto updates, then it got to the stage where it shutdown and was installing 1/3 updates then when it got to the 2nd part it crashed and when i restart the laptop nothing happens at all, just a black screen, no boot menu options or anything like that. I dont have a vista disc or anything like that, does anyone have any suggestions as to how i can solve this problem, sorry if my explanation was short and not very detailed.

thanks in advance

Answer:Vista wont load after update error

Um, I believe you will need some kind of disk. Specifically, you'd need either the Vista disc or the ERD disc. You need to launch a repair on your OS, as it seems to be screwed. Can you get into Safe mode? Can you get into the pre-boot menu at all?

I have a T60 that I was only able to use for a couple of days after purchase on EBAY in the fall of '08.  Ordered recovery disks in spring of '10.  Just now getting to use them.   The recovery did not work.  BIOS shows 60 gig hard drive as 4.5 gig.  Had hard drive reformatted at repair shop, where we discovered that the HD had 3 partitions, one 50 gig partitution unformatted. After reformat,  loaded R and R from CDs then rebooted to hard drive and loaded all 6 recovery CD's as per instructions.  Last disk (6 of 6) popped up error messages that \SWWORK\4GEOXCA1\LAYOUT.BIN is corrupt or unreadable, Run CHKDSK.   Then a message that said:  Unable to save all data for the file \Device\HarddiskVoume3\SWWORK\4GEOXCA1\LAYOUT.BIN Failure of hardware or net connection. Following that corrupt file messages, like the first one above, for SETUP.INI, SETUP.EXE and SETUP.DLL came up. The computer will not boot to windows, just sits there with a blank screen after the boot message.  I can boot to the R and R program by hitting the Thinkvantage (blue) button.   Can I download uncorrupted versions of these files?  Is there a way to check the integrity of the files on the recovery CD (some sort of cabinet type file, IIRC an MIS extension)? Thanks in advance for your help!

Please can someone help me with my problem. My teenage girls have two laptops which have starting playing up They are both Hi-Grade M760S-P made by Clevo Co in China, running Vista Basic. The 1st one works great with no problems. The 2nd one changed her password and forgot it, then got her "know it all" teenage boyfriend to "try" and fix it. He tells me that he used a program to delete the user account password, as he had done this before and it had worked (after some discussion he tells me he used a program on Hirens Boot-disk, which I haven't heard of myself, he says he can't remember what it was called and his copy of it doesn't work any more, which seems like an excuse to me) however it didn't, and now it doesn't start at all. My daughter say that the disks that came with the laptops have been lost, and that the data on the laptop have been backed up. She then gave it to me with a demand of "get it sorted please" which considering that her boyfriend seems to have buggered it upcompletely seems about right for her. I have recently lost my job and don't have the money to take it to a shop, but I do have a fair bit of experience with PC's.So as I have a PC which I can plug her hard disk into as a slave disk, and seeing as I have a copy of Easeus Disk Copy, I thought (however wise it was) that I could format the problem disk, and then disk copy from the working laptop. The disk copy process seemed to work fine, I put t... Read more

Answer:Vista won't load - Windows Boot Manager Error

After a couple more hours of reading, I came across an article that has solved my problem, It told me that Ineeded a recovery DVD to reinstall the winload.exe file. This is common from everywhere that i have read, what wasn't so common was where i could get my hands on a copy, now, tonight at 2am on a Saturday morning, until I read another article on a different website hidden away on the forth or fifth page. It told me to goto Systemdiscs where i could download an .iso of the recovery disc which was 120Mb in size. They also do recovery discs for Windows 7 & Vista both 32 and 64 bit. I downloaded the disc, burnt it using Active ISO Burner and put it in the drive.Mod Edit: Removed links posted, see my following post ~ Hamluis.I started the laptop, and it booted from the DVD, where it asked me to select my language settings and then took me to a menu. The first option on the menu asked if I wanted to fix start up problems, which naturally I did, so I clicked it.That was it, it did it's bit, then told me to restart the computer, and hey presto it started first time. I have now successfully restarted the laptop 8-10 times now and it restarts perfectly every time.So that's it, it cost $9.75 to download, and has saved me lots of ear ache from my girls (and the ex)I've used this site before, so I thought as I have found my own solution, I should share it with everyone else. The moral that I have learnt is to make sure I keep the discs that come with a new PC... Read more

Hi, notsavvy, and welcome to the forums.

Glad you figured it out - although you might want to do some hardcore malware testing to make sure you aren't infected with something that is infecting downloads as they are written to disk....

Might I also recommend Fx 3.1 B2 - it's a lot faster than Fx 3.0.x and most extensions / addons work well, since you have the option to override compatibility if it does not work the first time around....

Answer:Big Vista Problem - Scvhost.exe Error And Explorer.exe Will Not Load At Startup

Have you installed updated drivers for your system? This would include any chipset/mobo drivers, SATA drivers, video drivers, etc? Without them performance will be flakey at best.In particular, try the scan at http://www.driveragent.com/ (using IE) and see what it finds out. Then look for those drivers to update (for example, my system still needs Intel drivers for the controllers on my system - but none are available). If you can't find Vista drivers, try XP drivers in compatibility mode and Run as Administrator. But, I wouldn't update them with the XP drivers unless you have a known issue with that particular piece of hardware.Check your Device Manager and Event Viewer for signs about what needs to be updated.

Ive read the Instructions on how to setup XP to dual-boot with Vista...
However, im concerned (and someone mentioned it happened to them in the thread)
that when XP SETUP is finished with the TX part of setup and reboots PC to go into the
rest of setup (GUI XP SETUP)) it wont continue....?
is this right>? ive read elsewhere that if the partitions for XP are created in Vista that it wont boot into the rest of setup....

I could make the partition during XP setup if this will help?

thanks

Answer:Vista/XP Dual Boot - Will XP setup continue into GUI setup after reboot of 1st part.?

When I did my dual boot [using win2k / vista] I used an existing partition that was created by vista. No problem at all. It is a little more difficult than say installing win2k after xp however as long as you follow the instructions there are no problems.

As always make an image of your system before you start. This way if something does go wrong, it is a simple matter to restore the image and be back where you started from.

Hi all,
Just the last couple of days I have been getting this message randomly. NPM Setup Application has encountered a problem and must close. When I look at the data the szAppName is RCapp.exe. I have done a search on Google and there seems to be a few other people with the problem but so far no answers. I'm hoping someone can help here. Thanks in advance,
~Joan

Answer:NPM Setup Application

I've done a bit of Googling also, and I find it odd that no one asking the question has given any kind of context to the error message, like the name of the software it is a part of.

Intuitively, "Setup Application" ought to have something to do with installation or configuration, yet no one has mentioned something like "While trying to install my xyz software...."

The only software I could find that might be associated with this is some kind of commercial-level bandwidth optimization software, which sells for more than $2000. Seems unlikely that average folks are going to have this on their home computers, and that professionals that would be using this software would be asking for help on a for-free Technical Support forum. That's why computer nerds get paid the big-bucks, to fix high-level software when it goes bad.

Also, check Event Viewer for any log entries that might lend some help.

So, my theory on this is that it is malware. Some new kind of thing that hasn't had much documentation yet.

What is your AV solution, and are your definition files updated ?

-Or-

Are you running some kind of high-level software from a company called "Orion" ? If so, seems to me that for + $2000 they could provide their customers with some Tech Support.

My original post was in the Window XP/Pro discussion. This is continuation from there as did not know if I needed to copy them over here........ This still happens when I start the machine: Services.exe - Application Error. STOP: c oooo 145 {application error. The application failed to initialize properly (0x 0000005). Click OK to terminate application. The above message is what I receive, when I run "error check". It was advised from the Microsoft website that I ran ERROR CHECK, along with "disk cleanup" & "defrag" analysis, to see if the machine needs to be defragged.I went along with the advised procedures by Microsoft, because it was said that the computer would run faster. I've been doing the ones that worked, defrag analysis, disk clean up & CC Cleaner. Along with those maintenance tasks, I update all the definitions on the malware software. With the aforementioned error message problem with the lap top, I also have a problem with Adobe Reader (listed in another topic), that I can't uninstall it, without getting a 'Error 1402' message. Then the one last problem is the cursor jumping around at random times, when I am typing to either the forum or in a Word document. I mention these other issues because I am not sure they're not related. This is a DELL Inspiron 1520, Centrino (2007). I have another laptop, a 5150 Inspiron, with a P4 chip, and it absolutely has no issues. It hasn't even caught a virus. I don't use it as much now, but in the past I took it everywhere. What steps are you taking to run the check?

That error seems to indicate a hard drive problem, which is why it was suggested to run chkdsk /r.

Start/Run...type chkdsk /r and hit Enter. Type Y in new screen and hit Enter. Reboot the system. The command should execute, before booting into XP.

A user is getting a popup warning upon login (see event log entry below).

This started last friday and another Tech ran chkdsk and the user was able to print a few times before they left at end of day, not able to print today. I ran the chkdsk but no luck.

The print spooler service will not start, when forced the popup shows.

I have removed and replaced spoolsv.exe with no luck.

Hi There

I have been given a friends computer to fix. The way he described it, it sounded like it was full of Malware etc, however I haven't been able to start it up as I get the following message appearing when I power it up.

userinit.exe - Application Error The Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click ok...

This message appears twice, I then get the wallpaper of the computer up, but nothing else, no icons or task bar. I have tried a wee trip to safe mode but don't get anywhere from that either, just the same message.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Cheers

Colin

Answer:Services.exe - Application Error. The Application Failed To Initialize (0xc0000005).

Well...it seems to me (I may be misreading) but that system belonged to a unnamed 3d party, which had the operating license.

If I had found such system, the first thing I would have done is wipe it clean (because I don't like using someone else's data which they've decided to trash) and to give myself a good start at seeing if the system worked properly.

Then I would have done a clean install.

That's the only way that I know how to go from a series of unknowns...to a known good, working system.

Worst case scenario: The system is highly infected.

Best case scenario: The system has O/S or malware problems or a combination thereof.

I just downloaded about 4 different files off the internet. All the files were in zip format. I extracted all the files only to get a setup.exe file. All 4 setup files have been modified using inno setup. When I double-clicked the application the first time it came up with the setup wizard. I clicked next and it gave me an error stating the version was out of date and I need to download the update from the vendor. I tried the other applications and now nothing happens after double-clicking on the inno setup.exe apps. If anyone knows what is the problem either with my computer or the files I downloaded please help me. Anything to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I have already downloaded and installed Inno Setup from the vendors website and it did nothing.

OK, this is admittedly a strange one...

I have used an old (probably a 16-bit) application as my time synchronizer this I've used for quite some time. Its name is TimeRC, and is a great synchronizer as it tracks moon phases along with the time (from selectable, multiple potential time servers). After a fatal software crash a couple of weeks ago, I'm in the process of recovery. Attempts to manually launch the EXE, result in a launch-time error stating that the ap is not compatible with my Windows 7 Pro (SP1). Note that I'm running on the same level of Windows that I was using prior to the crash/re-install. I have inhibited compatibility checking (Group Policy adjustment) only to incur the Win32 error.

I've been through the litany of utilities (registry) to correct this situation, and I KNOW that this ap runs just fine on Windows 7 (from pre-crash days). I am at my wits end trying to avoid this situation. I suspect that there is a registry setting difference (now versus pre-crash) about which I'm ignorant, so I'm open to any, and all suggestions.

To use an alternative time synchronizer is not an option...I'm anal about how my system looks, feels, and performs!! I've even tried running in XP mode (virtual machine) to no palatable result. Note that I don't have access to the program's source code, otherwise I could recompile!

There's got to be something that I'm missing.

Color me frustrated,
Randy Reist (Lairbear)

I'm getting consistent/regular application errors involving "svchost.exe_SysMain" failures. A typical event message looks like the following:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Faulting application svchost.exe_SysMain, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x47919291, faulting module sysmain.dll, version 6.0.6001.18000, time stamp 0x4791adbd, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0000000000027bc4, process id 0x9b0, application start time 0x01c9c9b411570516.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

This is followed (in the event log) by a cascade of errors from the "Service Control Manager Eventlog Provider" such as the following:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The ReadyBoost service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 2 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The cascade of service/driver errors occurs within 3 to 6 seconds of the initial svchost.exe_SysMain failure and hits a dozen or so other services including but not limited to ...

Windows Audio Endpoint Builder

ReadyBoost service
Human Interface Device Access service

Answer:Application Error -- Faulting application svchost.exe_SysMain

SYSMAIN is Superfetch.

I see exception code = 0xc0000005. What anti-virus product(s) do you have installed? If "Internet Security" package w/ personal firewall like NIS, KIS, Mcafee, etc... - IT is the likely cause and s/b removed.

cmd.exe application error - application was unable to start correctly (0x0000142). Click ok to close the application

Anyone know why it happened?

I got this error when I tried to restart to install an update. However, in windows update, it showed I had nothing to update. There was the little yellow shield by the shut down button to indicate it was installing an update when I would shutdown.

I rebooted fine, and CMD works fine. Is it possible windows thought it had to install something, and the installer had already installed the update (I went onto windows update earlier myself to install the windows and silverlight updates) and it bugged because maybe it had to use cmd to execute the update or something?

Answer:cmd.exe application error - application was unable to start correctly

It seems to be happening again, but only when I shutdown when explorer is open. I tried and tested his multiple times. It has only happened after the new silverlight update and kb 30247777 (sorry if the number is wrong) update.

What is causing this?

Hi All,

I recently purchased a new laptop and I have had this error occur almost since the start.

Basically, when I switch on my laptop, both bttray.exe and GrooveMonitor display the exact same error(bar the application name in the title) - I have also tried to install AVG Free which comes up with the same error when trying to start.

The error is:

BTTray.exe - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc150004). Click OK to terminate the application.

I am running Microsoft? Windows Vista? Ultimate 6.0.6001.1.1252.44.1033.18.3066.1940

I haven't tried anything to correct this as I wouldn't know where to start.
Any help anyone can provide would be highly appreciated,

Thank you in advance,

I've had an ongoing problem with application errors that say the following:

<app name.exe> - Application Error
The instruction at "0x036...." referenced memory at "0x00000ba0". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program.

I've run HJT before and others couldn't find anything. I've significantly cleaned up my PC, currently uninstalled about 4-5 different spyware/adware programs (at the instruction of a MS tech support person who's trying to help me integrate SP2 back into my c:/ with no luck ). But, someone on the XP forum suggested I run HJT again and copy the log so here it is. If anyone has any other ideas I'm open to listening. I get this error message when exiting out of almost every application or browser I have. Can't seem to figure this one out. Thanks!

I don't see major here...Did you install anything before this happened? Perhaps IE 7.0?

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD.

Hi there,

I don't usually have virus problems but yesterday managed to get the super-annoying "Vista Guardian 2010" all over my computer. I followed some tips and ran AVG, and Spybot and it seemed to have got rid of it.

hxxp://www.myantispyware.com/2010/01/28/how-to-remove-vista-antispyware-2010-vista-antivirus-2010-vista-guardian/ - that's the actual instructions I followed.

Thing is, now I've got this intensely annoying issue with my Firefox link (and IE link, if I choose for that to be there) on start menu. It just doesn't work, and every time I click I just get an error message saying "explorer.exe application not found" then it asks me if I want to remove the non-working link. I tried setting the associations again in Default Program and have searched the internet for tips, but can't seem to beat it. Also tried some an .exe fix file but no luck. As far as I can tell, nothing else is affected, but I don't have a clue if it's still infected or my laptop is just wounded now.

Any help would be much appreciated. Oh, and I don't have access to a boot disk or Windows disc.

Here is the DDS log and attachments..

Hello:

This must not have posted while I was at a remote location on their WiFi, so here we go attempt number 2.

I have a windows XP VMWare installation and try to run a setup.exe both from the hard drive (C:\MicroGrade\setup.exe) and from a CD (written using a windows XP physical computer) D:\setup.exe. No matter where I run it from I get there error <path-to-setup>\setup.exe is not a valid win32 application. The funny thing is that it reads from both the physical CD and the hard drive no a physical windows 7 ultimate 64-bit PC and a physical windows XP PC with the 32 bit version of windows xp pro sp3 installed and fully up to date. This is definitely a 32 bit application seeing as the particular program was distributed in 1999. What could be causing this on a clean install of XP wen all my other testing on physical machines says this setup will run, the application will launch, it makes no sense. I'm highly confused.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks:
Carly

I am trying to open "add/remove Windows Components" in "add/remove programs". When attempted, I get the message "SETUP LIBARY ZONEOC.DLL COULD NOT BE LOADED, OR FUNCTION ZONESETUPPROC COULD NOT BE FOUND. SPECIFIC ERROR CODE IS 0x7e."

Beneath this message is another which states "Windows XP setup application could not be initialized.

Help! I'm not real computer savvy, so registry stuff may be way beyond my brain-power.

Answer:Windows XP Setup application could not be initialized

Try doing a repair install by booting off of the XP Cd.

Hello,

I am at a bit of a loss here in regards to partitions, as I've never really done it, and would like some assistance.

I want to configure a new system setup under the following circumstances:

SSD(1): (dual-boot OS drive)

+ Partition 1: Windows 7
+ Partition 2: Windows Server 2012

SSD(2): (program / file drive)

+ Partition 1: one large single partition for application / program storage; e.g., Visual Studio 2012 and SharePoint Server 2013.

As you may have noticed, I need to have an instance of Windows Server to use SharePoint Server. At times I will want to run the server set-up to facilitate TFS and SharePoint with a very small team of developers, school related for example. And at other times I would like to boot into Windows 7 Ultimate so I can have a normal browsing experience and play games, etc. But of course I could also develop with VS11.X in Win 7 environment if needed.

My question, is what I'm proposing possible? I want to use Windows 7 normally most the times, but at others I will require Server 2012 to use SharePoint. Can I share the same program resources on the second SSD regardless what OS I boot into? What issues may rise if I tried running SharePoint (or just having SharePoint) while booted into Windows 7?

I've searched high and low for answers elsewhere but no luck. =/

A friend of mine said that I will have to create two partitions on the 2nd SSD, a copy of apps for each OS due ... Read more

Answer:Dual-Boot SSD and Application SSD Setup

Since you can't share programs between the OS's, another method to consider is install each OS to a HD with the other unplugged, then after plugging both back in boot choice of HD's using BIOS boot order in BIOS or the one-time BIOS Boot menu key.

Then you can install each OS's programs to its partition which avoids issues.

Only if you have a lot of User folders to take up the second drive would that seem to make it necessary to install the two OS's onto the Primary HD booted via the Windows Boot Menu.

Either way you would want to link any User folders copied to another partition by rightclicking it to add to the related Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums to avoid issues with moving the user folder which then makes the target partition a System folder.

I am running Windows XP HE . I have no trouble downloading and installing programs from the internet. However when I attempt to install anything from my program disks, I get the message that: E:SETUP.EXE is not a valid Win32 application. This occurs even with software that I have previously successfully installed on the system before. I have checked for viruses, none found. I'm at my wits end on this. I've tried everything I can think of.

Please help!
Thank you all,
Sagey

Is there a 3rd party program out there that will do this easily, and allow it to be accessed via the internet? I'm on the go a lot, and there are some programs I would like to be able to access from anywhere without having to install them at every workstation. The programs I'm looking to use are Windows-based, so I don't know if a *nix OS would work too well.

I've also heard of this being especially common for CD-ROM drives, USB ports and such, but there was no "Application Not Found" error when I went to run my thumb drive in the USB, just the "Open With", but I couldn't open, because the files/programs didn't exist already on the computer, they were just on my thumb drive.
Any advice is really really appreciated, thank you so much.

Answer:"Application Not Found" Error for Windows Vista

Have you found a solution to this problem?? I am experiencing the same issues with my programs on Vista - any application I try to open prompts me to "open with". I found that I can right click the program and select "run as administrator" and it will open - however, I am the administrator to my own computer just logged in with my own account....

I have several Asus Eee netbooks that I'm getting set up to use at my school. I had some parent volunteers helping me get them ready to deploy, and one of the netbooks was plugged in to initially power it up, but then hard-shut-down before Windows could run through its initial setup.

Now when I boot up the netbook, and it attempts to go through the initial windows setup "Setup is starting services", and then throws an error message:
The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation.I restart, and the cycle continues. This happens whether I try to boot normally or in safe mode.

I've got no CD-drive attached to it, so I'm not sure what I can do to break this error cycle. Any suggestions/tools/ideas?

Thx,
Jeff

Answer:Win7 Starter getting error on initial setup; locked in setup loop

Not sure how you deployed them, but if Startup Repair doesn't help when run from System Recovery Options then I would redeploy the image or run Factory Recovery from its partition after backing up the disks.

If you don't have one and they are same hardware, simply backup one's image using Win7 backup imaging or free Macrium - Image your system then boot System Recovery options to Recover Using an Image from its external storage location which you have connected.

If they are not same exact hardware or Image hangs at startup, SysPrep the original before deploying to remove all drivers, activation, SID and HID's.

i run 2 screens with the desktop stretched across them. One of my apps (arena chess gui) usually starts on the monitor i wish to have it on. about every 5th time i start it it opens on the other monitor and i have to manually shift it.Is there any way i can force it to always use the same monitor?I am an experienced comp engineer so i am quite happy to play with registry settings if required.

Answer:application placement on a multi screen setup

Not an answer to your question - but if you're regularly moving applications between screens, I can thoroughly recommend MultiMon Taskbar - I've used it for years, and it's great - and free (although there's now a pro version). See here:click here
