Preferred Solution: WD My Book 4tb External USB Crashed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: WD My Book 4tb External USB Crashed

You've already messed up by keeping only 1 copy of important files :/

Is H the typical drive letter designation for that drive? I assume it is what you expected since you tried to open it. Can you take a screenshot of what Disk Management looks like with the drive on and connected?

Have you tried a different USB cable or tried it on a different computer?

My hard drive crashed and I have lost a bunch of email and address book contacts that were not backed up. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Quad-core machine with 8G of RAM. I am running Microsoft Office 2003 and I need to retrieve my email and contacts from Outlook. My hard drive is not completely dead. Answer:crashed email and address book contacts.

Hello,I would suggest using a live Linux disk to copy the files containing your Outlook contacts (they are usually .pst files) to a flash drive, then reimport it into Outlook on a healthy machine. Here is how to import contacts into Outlook using .pst files.Hope this helps

I have first been getting these problems when I downloaded Comodo IS Pro. Apparently when I approached them for help, the technician did not reply to me after telling me to install.

Thus I did a system restore and the computer could load in normal mode(however the screen, etc loaded slow like hell.)

Yesterday, I downloaded comodo firewall and something familiar appeared

From Problem Reports and solution, these are the service that crashed:

4X svchost.exe
1X lsm.exe
1X sandboxie.exe
1X wininit.exe

But guard32.dll from comodo is the module causing it according to Problem Reports and Solution, but anyone knows why and how to solve it?

Answer:Svchost crashed, windows start up crashed, local session manager crashed

Have you tried uninstalling Commodo to see if it is causing the problem?

No. 2 son has a Hitachi external hard drive, LS 1000 EMEA containing c. 300 movies and music files. He recently loaned it to No. 1 son to take copies. No. 1 son has identical drive. Suddenly the original drive cannot be accessed? Shows in windows explorer and device manager but not the contents. Causes explorer to stop responding. This is the case on 3 different computers and with different USB cables and power supplies.
Could it be the connection rather than the drive itself? I have connections for hard drive to USB direct if I can get into the casing. Does anyone know how I can do this without damaging it? It may need to be returned if faulty, but I know that would be certain death for the data.
Or any other advice would be welcome!

Yep I have a three TB HD made by Seagate, model #- seagate 1dxap3-500, I usually leave it plugged in on my desktop machine, I noticed Istarted having problems when I went to import images in Lightroom and it is used for where I send my second backup location, I started getting messages that it couldnt save the images to that location.
so I decided to explore the HD and see if everything was still there, the main file menu is there but when I go to open any of the files it says each folder is empty, now when i try to open any folders the thing just hangs up, and I have to unplug it in order to get it to close.
I tried scanning it with Seagate software but get meessages like-too many errors or performance too low in the unit.
Is this a typical crash? will I even have a chance of retrieving my data? Any suggestions would be appreciated, I have had the HD for two years now.

Answer:Think my external HD crashed...

ANY message prompted by accessing an HDD can be considered as ominous, could be getting ready to crash or has crashed. I would try to get the files onto another drive as soon as possible.

Did I crash the drive? MAXTOR 1tB external
We have an external Maxtor OneTouch 4 plus 1 tB external
I bumped it and knocked it over and now can't access it. I know, I know; clumsy clumsy!
Could I have crashed the head and is there ANY chance I can retrieve the files on it?
Moved it to another 'puter and it says 'new hardware' and says the drive needs formatting.
(Actually tried to go ahead and 'format' but it doesn't see the drive (first sector, maybe?)
I Get this box:

'Either the partition on the external drive is not recoginzed or the external drive has no
partition. Do you want to create one?

WARNING: Formatting will erase all data on you external drive. Click "format" to begin the

I suppose I could bring it to a shop to see if they can recover the data.
what's your thoughts on this?
Thanks, Ken J.

A couple months ago, I backed up all my files (pictures, videos, documents, music) to an external hard drive my dad bought a while back. I had to factory reset my HP since it wasn't working well. About a week ago, I went to retrieve all of the files only to have my computer tell me i couldn't access the files unless I formatted the drive. My computer is less frequently able to recognize when I plug it in and I'm not sure what I can do to get the hundreds of thousands of pictures off before I lose them for good. Help?

Answer:External Hard Drive Crashed -.-

If you can access the drive, download and run either this;
Or this;

Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

In many ( most) circumstances it is better to make an image of the drive and then recover from the restored image on a different drive. This prevents your drive being even more badly damaged by trying to recover from it. That is what I would do. The data recovery programs noted will recover from a restored image.

You can make an image of the drive using this;

Hello, I'm new here and will admit I don't know too much about the workings of a computer so I will try to be as descriptive as possible.  I have a sony vaio laptop model PCG-7H1L (2 years old) running window xp media edition.  My son was playing on my computer and I got a few virus warnings (mostly cookie trackers and the like) so I cleaned up my pc and got rid of the problems.  In the process, however, I seemed to have deleted the driver for my sound/audio.  After unsuccessfully looking for a new driver, I decided that I would just restore the factory settings.  I bought a 160 GB Simpletech external hard drive to back up my files.  It took 8 hours to back up 43 GB but it was successful.  Unfortunately, after the back up was complete my computer became unresponsive.  It wouldn't shut down nor would any applications work.  I manually turned of the computer only to find that it wouldn't reboot.  When I try to turn it on, it starts to load and goes through the initial Windows screen (with the green loading bar) and then freezes when it gets to the next blue windows screen and won't go any further.  Did the external drive crash my computer?  Can it be easily fixed (by me?).  I hope this made some kind of sense and someone can help.  Thank you in advance!!!DianeIf you're getting an error what is the error message?Basic details on your computer, manufacturer (Dell, HP, custom built)... A couple weeks ago my external HD crashed and I went through a recovery company ($69) that got all the data back, probably could have avoided that, but I was afraid I had lost all my pictures. Now my computer runs a little slower. I don't know if I have been infected with something, all programs seem to run, just sluggish. I would like to clean the whole system up, i.e. get rid of unused/wanted programs, make sure my AVG anti virus is working properly, and disk defrag to run smoother. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I typed most of this up already, and it disappeared, so please forgive me if I inadvertently double post.

My Western Digital My Book external HDD is acting up. When I plug in the power cable, the light on the front of the unit blinks very faintly and very slowly. If i push the power button on the back, the light will flash once at normal intensity, then go back to blinking faintly. My computer does not recognize the HDD.

When this thing was working properly, the light stayed lit at normal intensity the entire time it was plugged in, IIRC. For sure it was not nearly so faint as it is now. Before it stopped working at all, it was having this problem intermittently. Because I was able to make it work by repositioning the power cable, I assumed that was where the problem was, but I have since purchased a new OEM power cable and that did not solve the problem.

I don't know if this is related or not, so I'm including it just in case. I own a tablet that the manufacturer says can read an external HDD. I plugged the HDD in to the tablet via usb, and and it instantly completely drained the battery on the tablet. (It wasn't fully charged in the first place, but it had some capacity remaining.) The HDD has not worked subsequently.

If anyone can help me figure out a way to get my data off the HDD, you would earn my undying gratitude. I don't really care about the hardware at all, but my data is valuable to me.

Answer:WD My Book External HDD blues

You can try opening up the enclosure and removing the hard drive from it. You can then connect to the drive to a SATA port in a desktop computer to see if you can access it or use another external enclosure or USB to SATA adapter to attempt to access the drive. If you're lucky its only the USB part of the enclosure that's damaged and the drive is fine.

In any case, we stress backups for a reason; drives fails and if you do not backup your data(as in more than one copy) then you will lose your data.

So when I plug My external HD into the usb port an hourglass shows up and nothing on my desktop functions. It just hangs. Tried having the external HD plugged in when i boot but then the computer hangs on boot-up. It almost seems like the computer is treating the Ex HD as the main HD. Is this possible? External HD is WD 1tb My Book. Could it have something to do with the jumpers on the 2 HD's I have in the machine now? Answer:Problems with My Book external HD

No magic bullet I m afraid. A few things to check:-

Do any usb devices work ?

Do the drive configure ok - on a another PC

Bear in mind that detection on some USB devices - can take a while, - this may be worse on a older or slower computer.

I would give the computer a good clean with CC cleaner - and malware bytes - both free downloads

maybe try a fresh os install as Last resort

HiI recently bought the above and have got it up and running. It is the anywhere access version. I have a couple of questions (tried their manual and support with no joy and I am sure someone here will be able to help). I have created a test backup of files. The gumph tells me I should be able to access individual files and share them. When I try to access an inidividual file I cannot. I have to go through about 5 different folders to get to the file I want. Does anyone know how I can do this & also to specify individual files to back up to a folder based on their file extension. Finally when I create a backup it defaults to an option to create 2 extra files (that is what it looks like) however when I access the files there is only one copy, where could the other 2 be & do I need to create another 2 copies of files?Sorry the post is long.

Hey all,

I bought myself a new external hard drive today called My Book by Western Digital with a 1 terabyte capacity.

I connected it to laptop and it wasn't showing up under My Computer so I went on their site for support. There it said that the HD is set up for macs with "HFS+ Journaled formatting" and that it first had to be formatted for Windows. So I followed their guidelines** and started formatting it in NTFS as suggested by them.

Now the HD has been formatting since about 2.30 - 3 h and it is still formatted only 18%. I don't think this is normal, is it? Does this mean my HD is faulty or did I do something wrong?

Thank you very much for your help,

Hey everyone. I need everybody's help put together.
My external Hard Drive Crashed on Friday.
It started this way.
It actually fell from my table and refused to come on ever since.
It was just making clicking sounds and beeping repeatedly without spinning.
Agitated, I opened up the device, and discovered that the lens wasn't moving over the discs neither were the discs themselves rolling.
So I got a working hard drive, opened it up and decided to swap the discs, but its still not working.
The Hard Disc is 500GB and I have over 430GB materials on it and on nowhere else.

The external hard drive isn't recognized anymore. I used the SeaTools and did some disk analysis and it told me that it couldn't continue after discovering over 20 bad sectors. This external is very important and I need all or almost all of the files. Is there anything I can do to repair this hard drive? I tried going through the properties and doing an error check but it won't even start. It shows up in My Computer but it reads as 0 bytes and asks me if I want to format it if I try to open it. I really don't want to format it. Please help.

Answer:Seagate External Crashed, Won't Recognize, Bad Sectors.

Does the drive make any odd noises like squeeks? There is a program called HDDRegenerator that can sometimes fix bad sectors if the drive isn't physically damaged. There are also some more advanced techniques you can try off a live linux cd.

You know how you preach about back up, back up, back up...and you do it, but then there's that ONE time that you don't?

Old Seagate FreeAgent 1.5 TB stopped working; think it was the power supply issue that's discussed on lots of sites. Poked around on-line and found I 'might' be able to still get the data off of it, so pulled the drive out of the case. Now what? I bought a 3.5" enclosure, but realized that the power connector in the enclosure won't fit. I know, I know, you're shaking your head saying, "amateur". You're right. I'm also an underpaid Archivist who can't afford the cost of extracting the data off the hard drive, so I had to try it myself.

Is there something I'm missing (don't laugh)? I can't find specs drawing for the HD anywhere, otherwise I might be able to figure it out. Anyone out there willing to help a dummy out? I just need to figure out how to get this stupid thing running enough to pull the data off; it's almost a month's worth of work and the last 15 years of personal pics. Ugh.

Oftentimes, USB storage will try to take drive letters that are already in use, and that makes them "invisible".

Here's how we find it:

1. Plug in the HDD, and power it on.
2. Right-click 'My Computer'
3. Select 'Manage'
4. On the 'Computer Management' window, click 'Disk Management'

Here we will see a list of all disks mounted on your system. One should correspond to your hard drive. Check what drive letter it has beside its name. Is it one that is already in use?

hi, my friend with windows 8.1 64bit has done a system restore with 2 external usb2 harddisks attached. all programs have been deleted and one of the external hdd's has 'crashed' - the other is fine. the crashed one has its driveletter turned into a small partition names 'restore' and the most part of the hdd as a no-driveletter raw partition. the second ext hdd was okay and retained readable data and driveletter.

I have already tried restoring the crashed hdd with third party recovery software, but only a collection of flac audio's are readble after restoring tot the (spacey) internal c harddrive. the majority of mkv's avi's and dvd videos on the hdd are unreadble.

My question is, as the original driveletter of the crashed external usb hdd is now one named 'recovery' , can this hdd (where i manually assigned a new driveletter to the data part of this crashed hdd, which is not readble, save by recovery sw)
be more effectively restored somehow by windows recovery system itself?
If so, how do i go about that task?
(Windows 8.1 itself from inetrnal c drive runs okay, although i had to reinstall all the user installed software)
I am an advanced windows 7 user but have not had much expierience with win8(.1) recovery useage.

help would be nice.

Hi all, This is a crazy one...

I have been using a WD MyBook drive for a year with USB, no problems, except the occasional 'delayed write failure' message (big problem with WD drives)

I bought an eSATA cable as the drive has an eSATA port on the back.
The first few times I used the drive through eSATA was pretty sweet. Great read/wirte speeds.
After 2 days, I noticed the drive activity light staying on (unusual behaviour).

Now whenever I turn on the drive when its plugged into the eSATA port, windows explorer crashes.
I can bring up 'task manager' sometimes, though can't successfully 'end task' or shut down.
Windows+R brings up the run dialog box, though I can't restart explorer this way.

Can anybody help? I have contacted WD and they have said its the first they have heard of this issue....

Cheers in advance

I find the drive very slow (copy, backup, etc.)!!
What could be the cause of the slowness?
I have an inner WD HD 250 GB (8MB cache memory) connected to SATAII port, which does same jobs in 30% of the time it takes the External Drive, connected to SATAII port on same MOBO.
May be it's because it doesn't have "cash memory"? (or does it? I couldn't find out).

Help! I tried to instal for the first time, and received the above error. I have many more error codes as well, but, "The application generated and exception that could not be handled".
APPCRASH is the problem event name.

Please help!

Answer:External Hard drive My Book 2.0 APPCRASH

Hi RCinPoCo and Welcome to TSF,

What happens if you unplug/plug it back in, does it keep giving you the same faultcode?
If you boot into Safemode (Press F8 during startup), does it crash aswell?
Can it be installed properly on other PC's?
Is it the driver install or is it any application that comes with the drive, for instance backup utilities that causes the issue?

I'm trying to install a WD My Book Premium II external drive on an HP Pavillion dv7 64 bit Vista laptop. The installation software installed fine. The laptop noted the first connection and went through the install driver process fine. When the external drive is connected the laptop beeps noting the connection (and disconnect). However, the laptop will not recognize the drive and will not assign a drive letter to the unit. The unit is also not found in the Disk Management section of the Comoputer Managment Control Panel.

Can anyone give me some help how to get the laptop to recognize the external drive/

I just downloaded Excel to my laptop with no problem. I keep my external backup shutoff until I make/receive any changes then proceed to start it and update any changes. Today for some reason I have in my files a data set " " . When I backup the external drive it will update everything but this file.

I did some research and it appears this is a useless item. I tried deleting it from the drive but it won't go away. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks

Answer:Solved: WD My Book Essential External Storage

it sounds like it could be a part of the operating system. windows usually checks the files being moved, copied and deleted to see if they are part of the system. if you were to delete such a file? windows would just replace it automatically.

I hope this helps

Hey Guys, We're having problems with external displays on the ZBook Thunderbolt3 docking stations.   More often than not, when we connect the ZBook Studio G3s(Usually powered off) to the ZBook Dock w/Thunderbolt 3 ... and  press the power button on the dock... my notebook boots up with maybe one display detected correctly at the right resolution, and the other display either not detected at all, or detected as only capable of 640x480. I've tried the following: -Docking while computer is already on/logged in. (Usually much worse results.)-Using different models of monitors. (ZR2440w, E240k, E241, Z24n)-Disabling 'auto-port select' modes on displays.-Updaing drivers to latest for video, computer, dock, etc. This 'hassle' results in about a 15-20 minute dance of docking/redocking, unplugging monitors, rebooting, pulling power cords every morning trying to get both of my displays to work. Sometimes I can get them to work but then I can't get my USB keyboard to work. (Joy.) Any advise or solution for resolving these issues would be greatly appreciated.

I recently purchased Western Digital's 1TB My Book External Hard you may know, it has no on / off switch. It just powers up with the computer or when it is plugged into the computer.

I have it plugged into my Sony Vaio (not sure which version off the top of my head....bought it new in 2004), but the problem I'm having is that my CPU gets stuck on the "VAIO" graphic upon startup or when returning form hibernation. I'm assuming this is a Windows problem but I'm not sure. Is it looking to the External HD for some kind of bootup command or something? Is there a quick fix to this?

I'm not CPU illiterate but I'm far from an expert. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated and I'll be glad to answer any more questions about my system if needed.

Thanks guys.

The HD is unallocated to the PC (not showing up on EXPLORER). I would like to allocate this drive and reallocate the raid and reformat the drive. I can use your help. Thanks

ladycharDid your WD come with software? If so you would use this to reinit the drives/array. Otherwise you would go to control panel/administrative tools/computer management/disk management. Do you see the unit and its drives here?ZAR will only work if both drives can be seenIf supported give serious consideration to using raid1. You will lose drive space but have drive failover ability.

Problem: I suspect my external hard drive is old/worn out.

Symptoms: Device manager recognizes it as a USB device under Hard Disk, but disk management calls it unknown and not initialized.
No drive letter is shown under my computer. When I plug in the hard drive I would hear it spinning up and than quickly down, than spinning up again and going back down until it finally just idles.

Goal: Try to recover my jpgs, doc, and txt files.

Specs: FantomDrives 500GB 3.5'' model number TFD500U16 (had it for about a year and a half now)
It had an NTFS partition and no special software was used to maintain the external hard drive, nor was an operating system installed on it. Just basic files.
if it matters, My computer is a windows Vista home basic on a acer aspire 3050 laptop.

How it happened: just before I left for work, i had things downloaded STRAIGHT to the hard drive. When I get home, it seems someone in the household unplugged everything to move the laptop. Since than the drive has crashed. However, even before this I noticed strange behavior like it would just stop being recognized as a hard drive in the middle of copying a 30GB file, but at that time it was on a mac so I assumed it may have just been operating system differences with the NTFS partition.

Self Attempts: I've tried the drive on multiple computers as well as on macs. No new drive appears.
I've also tried a program called TestDisk but the program only saw my internal hard drive and nothing el... Read more

I'm looking to buy a new external hard drive, and after reading through reviews on Newegg, I'm not so sure what I should get. Most of them have little to no reviews at all and the ones that do have a decent amount of reviews are completely mixed. This is the best one I've found, in terms of specifications and reviews:

The thing is, I've heard some pretty bad things about Western Digital drives recently. People say they've been failing at very high rates. Someone even said up to 70% of the new drives die early on, although there was no evidence to support this. I've been using the same two Western Digital external drives, heavily, for almost 10 years now and they've never given me any problems. Are newer WD drives really unreliable, or would it be safe to go ahead and purchase this?

Answer:Western Digital My Book Essential (External HDD) - Reliable?

I've heard people mention "avoid WD green drives". Apparently the blue and black are more reliable. There was also a string of failures with Seagate drives that I'm aware of. I have two WD external drives but neither is used extremely hard.
Wait until someone else weighs in.

New to the site and hoping to get some help. I am trying to set up an external HDD on Network Drives in my office. I have selected the tab to share the file on the network and all that. I notice it comes up as "E:" and that is not an option to choose from when I select Map Network Drive. Where it asks for the folder I put in \\Server\name of new drive. It keeps saying "Network path can not be found". I have tried to put the ip in and then the name of the new drive, like so: \\\name of new drive. Still can't be found. I have the hand also showing under the drive indicating that it CAN be shared. I formated the drive to NTFS as are the drives on the network.

I'm not a pro when it comes to networking and I don't know if I'm asking a stupid question here but any help would be greatly appreciated.

This drive is Western Digital External My Book Essential Edition. It was purchased because it is the main storage drive for my company's artwork and projects. It is constantly connected to either a mac or pc, depending on who is using it. As of yesterday, it is no longer working correctly. It connects to any computer, but is read as not having been formatted. I was considering disassembling the external in order to plug it in internally (it's a Serial ATA drive) and run chkdsk but I wanted to check first to see if it is even worth the trouble. It is essential that the data on this drive be recovered, and I would prefer to not send this in for data recovery. Too expensive! Any help would be appreciated.

My WD My Book essential external hard drive suddenly won't get recognized by the computer. It's about 2-3 years old. When I plug it in, I hear the machine inside starting up and the white light starts to blink for a few seconds then it stops. When I connect it to the PC, sometimes the PC reads it but after 1-2 minutes, it automatically disconnects and the PC won't detect it anymore. Sometimes, the PC doesn't read it at all. The hard disk starts up fine though.

Is the hard disk just overworked? Should I just let it cool down for a few days?

I look forward to helpful comments. Important files are in there. I almost filled up the 1TB of space D:

Thank you so much!

P.S. My PC has Windows 10.

I have Ghost 11.5, and anything over 2TB is not recognized. I have a new 3TB WD My Book. I moved all of my previous backups from my 2TB external to the My Book 3TB drive, and successfully created an image of my 640GB main PC hard drive.

I tried to resize the My Book 3TB drive, and it said the resultant volume would be roughly 1.5TB. When I resized, it now has a 1397GB primary partition, and 2 unallocated partitions of 650.62GB, and 746.49GB. I wanted to create 2 1.5TB drives. How do I undo this shrink, or how do I proceed to combine the 2 new partitions into one? I took a screen shot of the drives in Drive Management. I would appreciate any advice on this problem.

Answer:3TB WS My Book External need to redo shrink partition or resize

Try using another program such as minitool partition wizard. It can undo changes to partitions and file systems.

In the display settings, do you see "Identify" as an option? Try that.
What type of monitor you trying to connect to? And what cable are you using to do it?
To switch from mirroring displays to extended display, scroll down and select "Extend these displays."

I am a poud new owner of a new Z-book G3 Studio with the 4K screen and Quadra M1000M video. I am having difficulties with two streaming services, one is Netflix the other is Xfinity streaming.  When the workstation is running standalone with no external monitors there are no issues using the streaming services. Once I've plug in an exteternal monitor into the built in HDMI port or the display port or 15 pin connector on the HP 150 Thunderbolt docking station and extending the displays, the streaming services  only play back audio. There are no errors presented. The video is just black. It does not matter if I am using the Microsoft Store Netflix application of running it from a browser. I should mention this is true no matter which screen is the main screen.  Disconnening the montitors does not fix the issue alone. I need to disconnect the second monitor, logoff and log back in. All thread around Netflix issues point to the need to updated display drivers but I've checked an have the latest. I've also looked at setting in the Nvideo Control panel and do not see anything relevant.  I am running windows XP Professional 64bit, I7, 16GB Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Rick

I hope someone is able to help me.
I have two external hard drives and both are connected to my pc all of the time as one is accessible by my wife and the other for system back ups or saving additional information.
However, I have noticed that my main back up drive is no longer visible / accessible through WD Smart View and was previously protected by a password. The display on the front of the drive is no longer lit and I am just left with a white dot of a light on the front to signify that power is connected. I have check all power / usb leads and all work fine and the pc recognises the connection of the drive with a sound but still this drive remains invisible and not displayed even in my computer.
Therefore, I am in need of some help as trawling through various forums I have drawn a blank on where to go next.
Any help in trying to access my drive would be greatly appreciated.

hey guys, i just got this up and running yesterday and when in operation (but not actually transferring files to or from it) the drive makes a slight humming noise. my older WD 'my book' never made this noise.

is this normal? like i said, i only got it running recently and i don't know if this is apart of normal operation or not. is there any way to check? i did a 'quick drive scan' using the inbuilt software and that returned no errors.

if i did a more thorough scan and checked for bad sectors would this answer my question and solve the problem?

thanks guys

The new Dell XPS420 quad core processor is running Windows Vista Premium Home Edition. How do I then import this Outlook Express address book once it is located on the old hard drive.

Search for .wa files; see the 1st page of this article for some help and info:

I'm guessing that searching for "import Outlook Express address" in Vista's Help and Support Center will turn up a useful article or two. I'm not on Vista at the moment, so I'll let you check that out.

Or check out this article:

I have had my computer reinstalled due to windows locking the c drive. I cannot restore from backup as t'bird acct now different to original. I have got the email accounts working for current downloads but how can I move the emails and address book from my backup drive without causing confusion.
Can anyone help please.

Answer:transfer emails/address book from external drive to be included in current t'bird acct

With thunderbird open, select view settings for this account - click on Local Folders - look on the left pane and there will be a path to the local folder with a XXXXXXXXX.default file listed. This is the current profile that is being used by thunderbird.
Then look in C:documents and settings\username\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles - this is a hidden file so you will need to change folder options to show hidden files.
There is a Profiles.ini file - open with notepad and you will see it uses XXXXXXXX.default as the profile.
The quick and dirty way to restore the old emails is to drag and drop the old profile into the profile folder and the edit the profile.ini file to use the old profile.
If you google for profile manager for thunderbird there is an add on that handles multiple profiles and will start thunderbird with a different profile as selected by you.

Hi, I love this site and you guys have helped me so much, so first of all, thank you!

Now the bad news.... I got the WIndows Vista Repair virus about a month ago on my Acer PC. At first, it ran all of those warning messages and then it shut down the computer and reloaded as what appeared to be a completely wiped computer. The only icon on the desktop was the Windows Vista Repair. I tried to find programs by searching for a few minutes before trying to shut down (which the virus had also made me incapable of doing), and resorting to popping out the battery to shut it down. I restarted in safe mode with networking and tried to get on this site, but even in safe mode my browser was auto-redirecting me to sales sites. By following instructions for removal on this site, and downloading programs onto a flash drive from a different computer, I was able to get my computer in working order again, although it would still, at times, randomly shut down my internet browser (and the process and amount of time I spent getting it just to that state of operation was ridiculous, much worse than any virus I've EVER had...I can explain what all happened and the steps I took if necessary). A couple of weeks later, I left my computer on while I went to a friend's house for the night, and when I came back in the morning I couldn't get it to unfreeze. I shut it down and for the next two days, every time I tried to turn it on it would just run on a loop, booting up part of the way bu... Read more

I exported my address book from Outook 2003 into the Windows (XP) Address Book. This is great because then I don't have to have Outlook open to view my address book.

However, it isn't linked to my Outlook address book so that whenever I made a change to my addresses in Outlook, it'll reflect in the Windows address book.

I had that set up perfectly in my old computer (Windows 98SE) but can't get it to work in XP.

Any tips or ideas?

I need to print A5 pages for my book as I want to publish it myself. Do I need a special printer and a special printing package or is there another way to do that?

Answer:Printing A5 pages for a book and a book cover

Are you creating the pages using the A5 setting? If so, your printer should be able to print that size. I have two printers currently in use and both have A5 as an option.Generally speaking, the limiting factor for a printer is the width of the carriage, and to a lesser degree, the longest length that can be printed. The length is likely a capability of the printer driver as well as the word processor used to create the document.MS Word does have a setting for A5 paper. The other issue is if you have a printer capable of printing two sides in one pass. If not, then you need to feed the pages in twice and use the odd/ even setting in the print options. How many copies of this book do you intend to print and how many pages in each book? I ask because it may be cheaper to take it to a print shop. Depending on what you are trying to produce, you may not be able to do a professional job. Will you be able to bind the book, for instance? Will there be any illustrations?message edited by OtheHill

As far as I can see, I've done exactly the same for each person on each machine, but when I right click on Contacts to set the Outlook address book up as an email one, so they can select from either the Global work one or their own personal stuff, in some cases the option is greyed out.I've tried deleting the relevant profiles and doing them again, but it still won't work. I know they can still use the Contacts from the shortcut bar, but why will the other way work in some cases but not others, please? Thanks

New machine with Windows 8. Exported address book in from 7, and it lodged in People in Outlook. But the address book in Outlook is empty, so there is no auto infill for the To box of a new email, unless I have received an email from that person since the new machine was set up. And even those addresses don't appear in the address book. How can I get addresses from People into Outlook Addresses? Upgrade to 8.1 made no difference.
Many thanks, and best wishes for the Festive Season.

Answer:Address book into People in Outlook, Windows 8, but not into Address Book there

What you imported are Contacts not address book. You can try this article How to Create an Address Book in Outlook | eHow i haven't personally done this though.

So I recently got the opportunity to get either an iMac, Mac book pro or Mac air, I am happy with the specs of all but I can't choose which one I want... I could get the iMac, for its beautiful big screen display, the Mac book pro for better specs and a retina display or I could get a Mac air for its ultra thin and light design. Please guys I really need help and this is the first place I thought to ask, thanks so much.

Answer:iMac, Mac book pro or mac book air?

I would recommend the MacBook Pro. It has great specs, is very portable and there really isn't that much difference in size between it and the Air. The added specs that the Pro has will keep it fresh for longer than the Air.

I can't get the external monitor (aka dual screen) to work on my T60 via the VGA port. My model is currently running Windows XP and has a ATI Radeon X1300 video card. I'm 6 months out of warantee (although this problem started while in warantee but I can't convince Lenovo of that). I've tried the following:- ensuring "extend my monitor onto this desktop" in windows display properties- disabling/enabling Presentation Director and trying all the schemes- setting all different combinations of modes for resolution/colour on both (LCD + VGA) monitor- trying two different monitors and cables (which did work with other computers)- Updating the video drivers (from the Lenovo website) and Presentation Director to the latest versions I then figured it might be a hardware fault, so I tried to see if the external monitor was activated on bootup. I made sure the "LCD + VGA" option on boot was selected in BIOS. Still no joy. Finally, I figured the actual VGA connector was broken so I bought a compatible mini docking station (port replicator) and attached the VGA cable to that and even that didn't work. What on earth could be wrong if it's not the software and not the VGA connector? The video card is working as its powering the LCD display? Is my only option to give it in to repair (I can't afford that)? --MichaelMessage Edited by mstrom on 07-03-2008 04:03 AM

Answer:external monitor simply not working - including with external dock (dual screen)

Hi,Does the external connections and cables work with another system. I'd do that first. If all of it works with another system then it could be drivers or internal things but try that first. There are some driver updates on the Lenovo site. Make sure your BIOS are updated and such.Good Luck,

Looking to buy an external hard drive for backup. This will be used only to backup data periodically. This is certainly a good price ($140):

I've never heard of it. Anyone have any experience with that brand?

I just spent like 18 hours copying 600K files, 1.33 TB, from a USB 2.0 ext. drive to a 1.36 TB USB 3.0 partition, but at the very end I got a handful of prompts to replace folders that already existed in the newly created folder, asked me to merge the original folder with the one just copied on the destination drive, eventually asking for permission to replace thousands of items and that's what it's doing now. I don't know what's going on. It appears that all files are there in both folders on each drive (with the exception of half a dozen that wouldn't copy due to long filenames).

Nearest I can guess is it is writing DOS names in addition to Windows names so the computer is going to spend more than a dozen more hours doing that.

Windows Explorer copy wrongly offers to merge folders
Windows Explorer copy wrongly offers to merge folders

The folder being copied that is being merged is called Drive(D), probably from a backup of Win 98SE being restored onto a Win XP machine, so it may resemble a system folder to Win 7.

Answer:Copied 600K files from external to external, Merge Folder?

Hi everyone,

My setup:
Dell running Windows XP SP2 with internal DSL modem, isp is xmission, Linksys WRT110 router.

I get my internet through the internal modem, and I'm able to access the internet on the computer that the modem is installed in, and then I have a network cable going from the box with my modem in it to a wireless router, and I have a good internet connection on all of my local boxes.

Now, I have an external IP address on that computer so I'm able to ssh, ping it, etc... I have tried numerous tutorials and guides on how to go through this computer and get into my local network to access machines in my home remotely from work, the road, etc...

But I think the internal modem gives me some problems, for some weird reason. I don't quite understand how to get through the router. I think what's happening is I have my internet gateway computer in front of the router, and then all the local boxes behind the router, and I can't get past the router.

Could anyone enlighten me as to how I would SSH into, or even PING machines in my local network from a remote location. Many thanks and Merry Christmas!

Answer:Internal DSL Modem w/ External IP + External Router, how to get into local network?

My interpretation is that you have dial-up internet access and are using ICS? Correct?

If the above is correct does the ICS machine connect to the router's WAN port or a LAN port?

I am new to this forum and to posting tech questions online in general so hopefully I can describe what's going on accurately.

My computer has had no problems to speak of lately. I had not synced my iPod nano in some time, maybe a month or two, so I plugged it in yesterday to sync it. I received the following message: "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes." I have since discovered the problem has nothing to do with the iPod itself. The iPod plays all the music and podcasts that are currently on it just fine. When I plug it into my girlfriend's computer, her iTunes recognizes it just fine as my iPod and I was able to pull videos off of it.

I am now pretty certain the problem is with my USB drives. I have an external memory drive that I use to back up documents - I had not used this in some time either. Out of curiosity I plugged it in, and it's not working either. When I plug it in and turn it on, nothing pops up, and when I try to do certain actions to check on it, like open My Computer, the system freezes and I end up having to manually shut down the computer and restart.

I have gone through several threads on various forums and tried almost everything but nothing has resolved this issue. Some threads suggested that plugging in certain devices can mess up your USB drives like this, and a few weeks ago I did plug my girlfriend's printer ... Read more

So I want to clone one external 2TB with another. So one drive is the main use one and another the backup one. So I copy everything over to backup and i store the backup at another house and then I start using the main: deleting and adding/editing files. What is the best software or whatever to allow me, after some time, synchronize/clone the externals again without deleting all on the backup drive and recopying? (main to backup) and make them clones again? ..Adding and deleting or replacing any nonidentical files.. Like where i can press a button on some software and it do the work for me.
Sorry if this is confusing

Answer:Best external to external hard drive synchronized backup plan?

There's a bunch of applications that can do that.

They all work pretty much the same way, but would differ in how easy they are to understand and configure---the interfaces would differ and the help files would differ.

I use FreeFileSync from

Others are Syncback, Folder Clone, Karen's Replicator, FBackup, Second Copy, and Synchromagic.

You should be able to configure them to do one or the other of the following:

1: If you delete or modify a file on the "original", it will also be deleted or modified on the backup.

2: If you delete a file on the "original", it will be retained on the backup. If you modify a file, both the modified and unmodified file will be retained on the backup.

It's up to you which choice you prefer. I use the first method, which is often called "mirroring"--one drive is an exact match of the other.

I just recently recieved this 250GB 3.5in eSATA External 7200rpm Hard Drive ( and I plugged it directly into my free SATA port on my mobo. I then followed the directions to format but after going to >Rightclick My Computer > Manage > Disk Management , the drive is not showing up at all. I double checked to make sure the power was going to the hardrive and double checked both ports to make sure everything was plugged in. Could anyone please help me figure out what I am doing wrong??? This external hard drive already came in a enclosure with a seal. The only thing I can think of is that it may also be set to be a Master?? but I didn't want to crack the enclosure, which would void the warranty, without knowing what to do. Below are links to the specs of my computer and mobo:

Answer:Problem recognizing new external SATA external Hardrive

A sata drive has no master/slave jumper so that wouldn't be a factor in it not working. I believe you still have to load sata drivers to make the drive work. If the drive didn't come with them then you could probably download them form the manufacturer's website.

Am thinking of adding one of these to get more space. I read/heard somewhere that the software that comes with it allows you to back-up files on this drive automatically from the computer C Drive. Can anyone confirm this please as this could be the 'buy it' information I need for the final decision. Thanks in anticipation

I have a Dell XPS 13 laptop running Windows 10. I have just purchased a Dell U2515H monitor which I am waiting for delivery for as we speak. I believe the monitor has quiet a few inputs however I am not 100% sure which lead to get to connect them both and which port I use on the Dell Laptop. Looking on the left hand side of my laptop there is a port with a lightning sign next to it, is that called Thunderbolt? and is that my monitor/display port? and what lead do I need? it looks like some sort of micro socket!

Question: SP3 crashed my PC?

New to the Forums and mainly for this purpose. I recently received a Gateway GM5066E Media Center XP desktop computer from my brother. He purchased it in 2006. I was installing all the updates I needed the other day, the last one I had to get through was SP3.

Everything seemed to go according to plan, but upon the reboot, NOTHING came up. I get no POST. I get no HDD spin. I get nothing but green blinking lights on my DVD-roms and a solid amber light on the front of the box.

My first thought was a bad hard drive, but it should still get through the POST if that were the case and I'd get hard drive errors and such. At the moment, I get nothing. Nothing sent to my monitor and apparently nothing going on on the PC either.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks guys and gals!
